ED’S LETTER With Women’s Day this month we decided to turn the spotlight onto some pretty awesome entrepreneurial women! Once we got the ball rolling for this feature, we weren’t short of choices. Everywhere you look there are women juggling businesses with busy family lives and households. That’s not to say I don’t have the greatest respect for full-time moms or women who choose not to work but juggling a career over-and-above family demands and a household to run garners a special type of respect from me. We wanted to delve a little deeper to understand what inspired these women to start their own businesses or pursue their careers. For many of them, the flexibility of being their own boss and setting their own hours was a key factor. When asked what they attribute to their success many of them attested to a love for what they do. All of them believe in uplifting other women and sharing their crowns. One woman summed this up nicely, saying: ‘I think women especially have an incredible sixth sense to identify the need and have the ability to change lives.’ We’re officially in the last month of Winter and can start looking forward to Spring. Whilst I love a real wood burning fireplace and sipping on a decent glass of red after a long day, I’m definitely looking forward to warmer mornings. It’s a real struggle waking kids up in what feels like the dead of the night and doing the daily commute to school with headlights on and every cell in my body screaming for my nice warm bed. Happy Women’s day to all you inspiring women out there!

We celebrate inspirational, entrepreneurial women Margie Clare Mackenzie Putsman

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? We decided that we wanted to open an agency that put our clients property needs as paramount with a focus on transparency, honesty and integrity. What is the secret to your success? We do not have geographical boundaries in terms of buying or selling property for our clients meaning that we can source anything from wine farms, coastal homes or business premises. We become very involved with our client’s needs and wants and are dedicated to giving the best service possible. What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? To be taken seriously as hardworking, successful individuals. What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? To always move forward with new technological changes affecting business and to be open to new ways of doing things. Creativity and consistent hard work are the cornerstone of survival in a changing market.

Michelle Wright

What is the secret to your success? Three things have helped me tremendously - my love of animals, the Dog Grooming and Animal Behaviour qualifications that I earned in the UK, and my very capable and loyal team at The Dog Box. What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Honour your customer relationships and be guided by your values. Ours are 1. Customer-first 2. Pulling together as a team 3. Have fun 4. Work with integrity. What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? Many are taking care of their own children and other family members. I try to help by offering a shorter work day and a performance-related bonus. What is your vision for your business? I recently opened a second parlour, hopefully others will follow. I am optimistic about the future and will continue to work towards becoming a main competitor in the business. I will endeavour to carry on with as much charity work as I can.

Dr Bianca Le Feuvre If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? My mum. She is remarkable. She raised four strong women, on her own, and still pours her life out fighting for children’s rights. What is the secret to your success? I use my artistic eye and advanced injection techniques to ensure my patients look the best, most natural-looking versions of themselves. I am so energised by the creative aspect of my work which keeps me reaching further. Do you believe in uplifting other women? Definitely! I am stronger when those around me thrive. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Simplify. Allow yourself time to focus on the part of the business that you’re most passionate about. Outsource the tasks that sap your joy. If this costs money, then build that cost into your business plan from the start. What is your vision for your business? To be known as an artist injector that uses her business as a vehicle to empower others.

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I was inspired to start my own business and follow my passion after years of feeling unfulfilled in a corporate environment. What is the secret to your success? I think it has a lot to do with loving what I do. I only make jewellery that I personally love and I think that resonates with my customers. I am fortunate to have a creative side to me as well as having come from a marketing and sales background which gave me a good skills set to run the business. Do you believe in uplifting other women? Absolutely! I love how social media gives us a platform to collaborate with other like-minded brands. We are often doing collaborations with, and promoting, small female run local businesses on our Instagram account.

If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? My mother Shirley, who I miss dearly as she passed a short while ago. What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I always felt driven to keep on learning in my life and I found my happy place in a classroom with children and teaching and this inspired me to study further which lead me on my Montessori journey. What is the secret to your success? Keep trying even when you fail. Believe in yourself no matter what and put yourself out there. What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Kindness, determination, hard work, flexibility and a love for what you do. Never give up!

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Start with a solid plan, trust your instincts and use the many local markets and pop-up events to test out your product.

What is your vision for your business? To be a happy and safe sanctuary for children to learn amazing skills and prepare them to be extraordinary in their journey in life. We aim to excel in the Montessori method, gifting children with the ability to follow their own north star.

If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? Kim Kardashian. While she is sometimes controversial, I am a huge fan of her as a female entrepreneur. She has succeeded beyond her wildest dreams and keeps on evolving her business. What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? My parents and grandparents taught me from a very young age that hard work pays off. They taught me to work smart and to always be in charge of my own pay cheque. What is the secret to your success? There are no secrets to success. One needs to be passionate, focused, work hard and always strive to improve. What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? Achieving equality in the work place. As a woman, I have been asked: where is your Dad? Where is your boss? And a few other derogatory comments just because I am a woman. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be decisive and make it work. An entrepreneur cannot sit and wait for things to happen, you must make it happen!

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? My love for science and art naturally lead me to becoming an aesthetic physician. Being a single mom to my 7-year old daughter created the need for flexible working hours. Do you believe in uplifting other women? Definitely. Most of us have the same struggles. Balancing work, family life and inner peace is hard and women should help each other and reach out. I get enormous job satisfaction from working with women and hearing the story of their journeys. What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? Women are often expected to perform/see to domestic duties and children’s needs on their own even when they have full-time jobs. Partners expect them to contribute financially to the household (which is fair) but don’t see the household chores as a 50/50 deal. Of course there are exceptions, but expectations partners of women have, are often unfair.

Debbie Christie

Charlene Joubert

What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Passion, love for what you do, confidence, discipline, perseverance and determination to do what it takes.

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I grew up on a farm where from very young daily life teaches you basic entrepreneurial skills such as planning ahead and problem solving. Later I realised bringing an idea to fruition comes naturally. I am also a ‘creator’ type.

If you could have dinner with any woman who would it be and why? Oprah Winfrey. She is a role model to all women and her life story and attributing her success to “an attitude of gratitude” really inspires me. Do you believe in uplifting other women? I’m in the beauty business but foremost in the business of making a difference and uplifting the lives of others. The greatest gift you can give is to reach out to another and give the gift of self-worth. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be passionate. Do what you love. Don’t be afraid to be daring, to be different. Be confident, believe in yourself. Have a vision. Challenge yourself. Understand your Industry. What is your personal business mantra? Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently.

What is the secret to your success? Believe in yourself. Even when you have disappointments and life is tough, remind yourself of what you want and do not give up.

What is your secret to your success? I would say most probably my strong relationship with my business partners, my faith and belief that only through giving as much as you can, you shall receive what you really need. I also love the “reality check” that success is not permanent, and failure is not fatal. Do you believe in uplifting other women? I believe in uplifting everyone that I encounter and am provided the opportunity to influence or empower. I think women especially have an incredible sixth sense to notice the need and ability to change lives. What qualities are essential to any entrepreneur? The ability to adapt, being able to consistently look at your business 5 years from now. Having a clear vision but to always keep experimenting outside your comfort zone.

Dr Bianca Le Feuvre

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I was inspired by the amazing wealth of medicinal plants in the Western Cape, and the lack of locally produced wellness products on the market at the time. As a spa owner I wanted to create a product that was uniquely South African and budget friendly. Our nail polish range was also born from a need to supply locals with a high quality product without the international price tag. What is the secret to your success? Support, faith and believing in my products. How do you obtain flexibility and home/work balance? I am a firm believer in family first. If my family is happy I can focus and achieve more at work. One of the best parts of having your own business is flexibility. It is a constant juggle, but worth it!

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I was brought up to be fiercely independent, and always wanted to be my own boss. I have since taken great joy in being of service to others, providing them with opportunities to succeed in their own life journey. What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Determination. Hard work. Endurance. Integrity. Keep an open mind and your ear on the ground. Never close doors. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Have a clear vision and plan - “give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four hours sharpening the axe – Abraham Lincoln”. Seek and follow good advice, take risks, be prepared to fail, treat people well and believe in what you say.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Rome wasn’t built in a day! Be patient, establish your goals and take the time to work out the kinks before giving up your day job, if possible.

What is your personal business mantra? Success in business is through my own personal growth. Focus on, and do good, as more good will come. Don’t take yourself too seriously. All we have is the present moment so make the most of it.

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? Although I am a creative soul, I have an analytical mind and like to work hard to achieve my goals. I craved working independently so, the obvious path was to be an entrepreneur and skip the corporate world. I however was still able to work with both individuals and companies to strategize, promote and grow their businesses. What is the secret to your success? I like to use disruptive, novel and original methods in the campaigns I run for my clients. When the digital era began, I initiated “engineering” “creative” “ideas” through new platforms to these clients, before they knew digital was going to boom. Hence Creative Imagineering. Create. Imagine. Engineer. How do you obtain flexibility and home/work balance? There is no trade off – balance work, family, health, and play. Your downtime is the key. Make the most of it and make sure you are spending it on people and activities that don’t sap your energy, but rather enhance your happiness. WEB DEVELOPMENT • GRAPHIC DESIGN

If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? I can’t pinpoint one woman but rather a TYPE of woman. I love to laugh and I enjoy the company of quirky people. I can’t imagine anything better than enjoying good food, good wine and a good laugh! Perhaps Ellen DeGeneres?

If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? Misty Copland, she is the first African American to be promoted to Principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre. She builds hope and inspiration in young dancers and shows that talent is key.

What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Courage, determination, self-assurance and efficiency.

What is the secret to your success? I absolutely love dance and children. I love how each child learns in a different way and how I learn through them. I am always challenged to improve my teaching.

What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? They lack self-confidence in their abilities and skills and are far more modest than their male counterparts. Therefore they’re often overlooked for promotions and opportunities to further their careers. How do you obtain flexibility and home/work balance? I put effort into organising my time well, evaluating my priorities and putting boundaries in place. I work at being flexible and sometimes this includes working while I watch my daughter dance or answering e-mails while I walk my dogs.

Do you believe in uplifting other women? Definitely! It starts at the bottom, uplift a child and you will have a successful women. How do you obtain flexibility and home/work balance? I’m not sure this is really 100% possible. Something always has to give. I employ others so I can spend time with my family. I think the reality is that it is tough to be a working mom and achieve balance. I am lucky to have a husband who comes home to his children every night and always has dinner ready for my late returns.

SUPPORTING WOMEN WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST. Penny Parolis – the doyenne of luxury lingerie in South Africa – opens up about what it means to be a woman in business today. When it comes to the future it is unapologetically, unequivocally and unquestionably female.

ing that Inner Secrets Lingerie clients are correctly fitted for bras and shape wear, Penny’s policy is that no woman would leave any of her stores feeling less than fabulous. Inheriting her mother’s dedication to furthering the feminist cause, Penny started out with a career in education – the basis of which has aided her in teaching the importance of a well-fitting bra. Using her fight with breast cancer as the catalyst for driving home Inner Secrets Lingerie’s ideology, Penny has striven to provide her clients with a unique shopping experience that uplifts their mood and leaves them with a better understanding of what suits their natural shape.

In addition to this ethos, Penny sought to train local women as professional Corsetieres – reintroducing the lost skill of correct lingerie fitting and creating an entirely new employment sector for the South African economy. Today, Inner Secrets Lingerie is proud to offer their customers the service excellence and experience that goes with the luxury brands they stock.

“A woman’s self-esteem is completely elevated when she sees the difference the correct-sized bra does to her shape and appearance. With the right foundation wear, a woman faces her daily life with renewed esteem and confidence!” As the co-founder of Inner Secrets Lingerie, Penny Parolis brings her own brand of strength, resilience and femininity to the luxury lingerie boutique. By placing emphasis not on how her customers look in their lingerie but rather how they feel, Penny has succeeded in making Inner Secrets Lingerie an inclusive space where each unique facet of the female form is celebrated.

Penny’s passion for helping others reflects not only in her helming of Inner Secrets Lingerie but also how she has risen as a female entrepreneur. Alongside her son Dimitri, Penny began a distribution company in the early Nineties but soon moved into retail after she discovered her talent for sourcing the best international swimwear, shapewear and lingerie brands and selling them in a female-friendly space.

Through hard work and an unwavering dream of bringing quality, heritage lingerie to South Africa, Penny has set the benchmark for women in the workplace. Conquering the niche market by ensur-

What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? It all started through sisterhood and community, which we formed and experienced through the process of loss and bereavement after a close mutually connected loved one passed away. We started supporting each other by meeting up weekly and then we chose to turn our focus on ‘happily ever after’. We decided to build on the values that were left behind. Creativity and the love for the aesthetically pleasing things in life were the tool for creating our business and brand. What is the secret to your success? Respect for our clients and trying to serve them with quality and commitment. Looking for trends and keeping an eye and ear on the ground. Hard work, going that extra mile.

dream, but to make their dreams a reality, by starting with that first small step. We encourage woman to use their gifts and believe that the more one uses them, the greater they will become. We also believe in networking and collaboration with other woman and in this way helping each other. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be patient. Be willing to invest a lot of time in your business - especially in the beginning. The more of yourself you invest, the greater the reward. Don’t expect to make money in the beginning, be willing to reinvest and wait. Don’t let money be your driving factor, rather let it be the passion and the values that you believe in. The rest will follow.

What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Creativity is a must-have ability - you need to think outside the box. Dedication, passion and commitment are essential. One needs the courage to persevere, to push through the tough times and must be willing to do a lot of hard work yourself - especially during the start of your business. Teamwork is key, along with the ability to learn from each other and to build on each other’s strengths. A hunger to learn and to grow from and through mistakes. She is a hardworking woman and for the 3 years I’ve worked for her I have seen her expanding and, in the process, creating employment for a lot of women. She is an iron fist with a velvet glove. What inspired your choice of career? It brings me contentment to see the smile on a woman’s face after a treatment when they see the results. Do you believe in uplifting other women? Yes! It breaks my heart when women put each other down. I believe as women we should help each other in any way we can. What are the biggest challenges women face in the work place? Being told that they don’t have what it takes. I speak against all negative energy and reach out to every woman out there that you are special, you can be what you want to be, nothing can stop you, you are strong. #wathintha bafazi wathinta imbokotho

ANDREA BAAITJIES HAS BEEN WORKING FOR SORBET FOR 4 YEARS NOW. If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? Oprah Winfrey as she is undoubtably a superior leader. She went through many tough times in her life and came out positively. One of her quotes I admire is: “What I know is, is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfils you, the rest will come”. What is the secret to your success? Seeking the knowledge, not just the results . So the key is to focus on the journey, not the destination.

What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? Judgement is really a setback in any work place based on the way you look or dress because once you lose your confidence you begin to doubt your judgement.

Do you believe in uplifting other women? I believe it starts with yourself. If you’re strong and confident in what you do and set your mind to it, it will set an example to the women around you to do the same.

How do you obtain flexibility and home/work balance? I work very hard at work so I leave most work done so I can have a peaceful night at home and having some time alone before interacting with friends and family is important if you have been busy at work.

Do you have any advice for women in the beauty industry? Always be ahead in the industry. You must be able to promote yourself and your expertise as people need to believe in and trust you.

What is your personal business mantra? Know and stick to your moral compass.

PAROESHKA SYCE VAN BOOM HAS BEEN WORKING AT SORBET SINCE JULY 2018. If you could have dinner with any woman who would it be and why? Without a doubt it would be Bonang Matheba – She is so inspiring, so driven, she rises from her mistakes and is the first Black Woman Connoisseur in SA What inspired your career choice? My passion for beauty and my two children. What is the biggest challenge woman face in the workplace? Defiantly Gender Discrimination. How do you achieve a work/life balance? I’m not sure I do! It’s so hard keeping my finger on everything as I have two children under the age of 10. One being ADD and the other with chronic eczema. I get by on a wing and a prayer, I think. What advice do you have for women in the beauty industry? Do not do it for the money, do it because you really want to make woman feel good about themselves. What is your personal business mantra? Beauty with a purpose…..

What is your personal business mantra? As you know more, you grow more.

NATALIE EEKHOUT (OWNER) If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? My daughter. She has taught me the most lessons in life, and makes me so proud of the young lady she is, and how she lives her values. What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? Believing that I should use the talents I was given, prove that I could run my own business, as well as show that I could contribute positively to others, and the community in which I lived. What is the secret to your success? Work hard, play hard, always have the next goal to live and experience. What qualities are essential for any women in business? Perseverance, and finding the balance between being tough and supportive. Do you believe in uplifting other women? Absolutely. The greatest reward is watching another woman succeed , and empower them to enrich their own lives. What advice do you have for aspiring women therapist? Believe in yourself. Never stop learning. Set yourself goals and celebrate your successes.

TRACY McGREGOR: OUR LOCAL GOLDEN GIRL

By Danni Martin

Hailing from our beautiful Cape, golden girl Tracy McGregor is a household name in South Africa. We interview her this month for our special Women’s Day entrepreneurial issue. An international model and actor, a television presenter, blogger, businesswoman and entrepreneur, there is never a dull moment for this go-getter. Tracy is a self-confessed ‘foodie,’ fitness fiend and a lover of adventure and travel. We had lots of fun catching up with her this month. If you could have dinner with any woman, who would it be and why? It would probably be Ellen DeGeneres; I’m all about having a good laugh and I think she’s absolutely hysterical. What inspired your entrepreneurial journey? I’ve always liked making my own rules and by being an entrepreneur one gets to do that every day.

arise where men feel they should have the upper hand in the workplace but women are conquering those stigmas every day by becoming the top dogs in their fields and proving that no matter what gender you represent it should be ones talent and capabilities that get them to where they are.

What qualities are essential for any entrepreneur? Having passion for what you do, taking calculated risks, wanting it bad enough and never giving up.

How do you obtain flexibility and a work/ life balance? Time management. There’s a time and a place for everything so planning your day is an important start. Set aside time to do things that make you happy too, so if you need to wake up an hour earlier to get to the gym because it makes you feel good then do that or if you like having your nails done once a week then make time to do that. What’s the point of working hard if you can’t enjoy the rewards?

Do you believe in uplifting other women? Of course! I think it’s very important.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Always keep growing, aspiring and learning.

What is the biggest challenge women face in the workplace? I suppose there’re still some equality issues that

What’s on the cards for the rest of this year personally and professionally? I recently got certified as a Spe-

What is the secret to your success? I don’t really think it’s much of a secret per say but I’ve always tried to put a lot of care and respect into what I do by making good business decisions and working hard.

cialist in Fitness Nutrition and so I’ve started a lifestyle business called Life 101 where I’ll be creating personalised meal plans for clients and helping them on the journey of changing their lives for the better. I’m currently studying for my Personal Trainer Certification so I’ll be incorporating that into the business when ready as well. Other than that I have some holiday trips planned towards the end of the year which I’m really looking forward to. What is your personal business mantra? ‘Work hard, play hard’. What is your favourite book of 2019? ‘Happiness Is A State Of Mind’ - written by His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa. How do you stay in such great shape? I eat really clean (most of the time), I take Cura CBD Oil everyday which is like magic in a bottle and then I’m also quite disciplined with my training regime. I love my Switch Playground classes and then I’ve also started doing the Barre classes at the new Storm Centre in Bree Street a few times a week and I’m obsessed!

BUSTING THE PROPERTY MARKET MYTH By Mike Fannin, Senior Wealth Specialist, Carrick Wealth

Stuck with a property that has been losing value, produces negative rental growth and which you cannot sell? If this sounds familiar, it’s because the property market in South Africa finds itself in a dead-end. In the Western Cape its particularly the case in wealthier areas such as along Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard. Compared to other types of investments, the returns have been dismal. When analysing growth in local house prices between 1970 and 2014, at first glance South African property appears to have been a fantastic long-term investment. However, when we look at a comparative real return by adjusting for the change in exchange rate, growth in South Africa was a measly 3.9% p.a. and a UK fixed deposit would probably have earned more. Falling house price growth Following the initial local property boom until 2007, inflation has outstripped house price growth which dropped dramatically, with growth generally only seen in the first-time buyers’ market on properties below R1-million. Research shows that over the last ten years, residential property has declined on average by 23% in real terms. Determining factors have been the low rate of actual nominal value increases, the low or even negative growth rate in property rentals, the high cost of money and inflation coupled to the increases in rates, taxes and maintenance. Additional factors include low economic growth, the stunted employment market which means less disposable income, investor aversion, political uncertainty, and rising emigration and capital flight. There’s little reason to think this will improve anytime soon.

Negative rental growth Compared to the average inflation rate for the period 2011-2018, rental growth was negative at about 1.45% p.a., rates and taxes increased nationally on average 13% p.a., while tenants have been struggling to pay rent. And selling your property can take time – up to almost 6 months for a house in the high-net-worth band according to an FNB Estate Agents Survey. Western Cape affluent areas Before 2017 the Western Cape accounted for 25% of house sales nationally and property prices grew faster than inflation, but no longer. In affluent areas such as along the Atlantic seaboard from Green Point to Camps Bay and Hout Bay, there has been a marked increase of reduced property prices. The fastest-growing market now is the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

HOW TO BE SURE, BEFORE YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR! Are there times in your relationships where it feels like everything is too much, and you can’t get through stressful challenges? If this sounds like you, then you’re not alone. It’s hard to get through it, but there are ways to survive even the toughest times where you feel like there’s no hope. Here are some ways to figure it out. Talk to your partner It’s easy to avoid things because sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich feels easier than confronting deep issues. Even if it is hard, talk to your partner. You can start by saying, “Hey, I love you, and there’s something on my mind.” it doesn’t need to be so serious from the get-go. It’s essential to make sure that you say what you need to say and don’t censor yourself. Sometimes, we hide things because we worry about hurting each others’ feelings, but the more honest you can be, the better. It’s okay not to know where the conversation will go but speak your truth. Communication is vital in relationships, so it’s essential that you talk to each other.

In a romantic relationship, it’s important to feel emotionally safe. If you can’t express your feelings, then it’s not a healthy relationship. You deserve to be able to show your feelings and know that your partner is going to value them. One of the safest places to talk about your issues is with a couples counsellor in therapy. A couples therapist will hear both sides and translate what your partner needs to you, and what you need to your partner. As much as you love one another, sometimes it’s challenging to see things objectively. A couples counsellor is a person who can challenge respectfully and ask the tough questions which clarifies, often gives an objective perspective and can lead to staying together in the long-term. Don’t expect a particular outcome You might want things to be a certain way, and that’s what’s holding your relationship back. There’s no perfect script for how a relationship should be; what matters is that it’s healthy for you and your partner, and that is subjective. Compromise In romantic relationship, disagreements will happen. You might be confident that your stance on the issue is right. But, there are three stances

in arguments, your position, your partner’s opinion, and a compromise. Listening Don’t underestimate the value of listening to your partner. If you’ve done something to hurt their feelings, you can hear them out and admit that. Say that you’re sorry, but don’t just say that you’re sorry; think about solutions to make sure that these issues won’t happen again. That’s one of the things that is hard about relationships; everyone will make a mistake at some point in a romantic relationship, and you want to make sure that you honour your partner’s feelings and make an attempt to solve the problems. Perspective As a Relationships Counsellor of many years, and having seen many outcomes of a relationship split, I can assure you that mostly the grass isn’t greener on the other side. The consequences of a split on your emotions, children and finances can be devastating and can seriously set you back in life. If the relationship is not salvageable, counselling will help to show you that and help you out of it in the least damaging way, but before you throw it away, it pays to be sure that it really won’t work before you walk.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION

By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

“Osteopathic treatment is directed at improving fluid mechanics and venous and arterial flow to the area, decreasing nociceptive drive, and rebalancing abnormal compensatory patterns in the surrounding tissue.”

-Integrative Medicine for Children, 2009

Inflammation is a part of the body’s natural healing process. Inflammation is the body’s response to injury (ankle sprain, joint strain, and muscle strain), infection (virus or bacteria) or irritation (allergen) or dysfunction of normal physiology (loss of normal structural mobility will effect physiology). It is the body’s way of signalling systems within the body to heal and repair damaged tissue, as well as defend itself against viruses and bacteria. Inflammation helps remove harmful irritants and pathogens so the healing process can begin. Inflammation allows damaged cells and tissues to be cleared from the site and brings healthy white blood cells, proteins, and other components to the site of injury to continue the healing process. Acute inflammation, which is healthy, should only last for a few days. Anything longer than that is considered to be chronic inflammation and is a sign of the body not healing properly. Signs of chronic inflammation may include joint pain, fatigue, depression, stiffness, redness, swol-

20

len joints, irritable bowels, weight gain or high blood pressure. Some people don’t know they are suffering from chronic inflammation until they are diagnosed with a disease associated with it. Factors can that cause chronic inflammation are inappropriate diet/food allergens, poor biomechanics/poor posture, lack of exercise/inappropriate exercise, stress, environmental toxins, and infections (bacterial or viral). Some of these causes can be reversed by simple changes in lifestyle. Not getting enough sleep or putting yourself under a lot of stress can put your immune system at risk, leading to inflammation. Chronic inflammation can also be caused by the inability to eliminate the initial cause of inflammation or by an autoimmune response where the immune system mistakes part of your body, like your joints or skin, as foreign. It releases proteins that attack healthy cells. The body has its own self-healing, self-regulating mechanisms. To stimulate that healing, osteopathic treatment focuses on moving your body toward an optimum state where it will manage and maintain itself. An osteopath aims to restore the normal function and mobility of the joints, muscles, fascia, thereby affecting the nervous, lymphatic, circulatory, digestive systems to help the body heal itself. Osteopaths understand that poor biomechanics and abnormal joint function

can cause inflammation. When a joint is inflamed the fluid (oedema) generated in the inflammatory process may put pressure on a nerve in close proximity leading to dysfunctional communication from the brain to the intended tissue. Therefore, osteopaths aim when treating patients is to restore proper joint function.. Osteopaths do this by helping to restore normal joint mobility. Osteopathic treatment aims to reduce pain and inflammation, improve fluid movement and drainage to an injured area, especially lymphatic and venous drainage, reduce soft tissue tightness/stiffness, improve function of the nervous system, improve joint mobility and improve movement strategies. By tracing back to the root cause, conditions can still be managed by maintaining the compensatory structures and functions of the body. A logical alternative target for reducing chronic inflammation might be to eliminate the underlying cause for the inflammation thereby reducing the need for long-term use of anti-inflammatory medication. Research has linked inflammation to a multitude of health problems. This is why it is important to recognize inflammation, and treat it before it becomes chronic. A balanced approach that includes osteopathy, proper nutrition, appropriate exercise and effective stress management can lead to an all-around healthier you.

BULLYING AT SCHOOL CAN HAVE A LIFE-LONG IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH “By the time we’re adults, we are generally expected to have gotten over it, but the impact can be serious and last a lifetime. We know that children who are bullied often suffer from low self-esteem, poor academic performance, depression and an increased risk for suicide, but up until now very little was known about the long-term psychological impact on adults who were victims of bullying in their youth.”

Shouqat Mugjenker, Mental Health Portfolio Manager at Pharma Dynamics says bullying has far-reaching mental health effects, which many carry into adulthood. sending hurtful messages or images via the internet or cellphone. 3.

Mugjenker points out that bullying could also alter the physical structure of a child’s brain, which further heightens the risk of mental illness. Here are some of his suggestions to help prevent bullying: 1.

Bully behaviour can manifest in physical abuse, verbal abuse, relational bullying, such as excluding the victim, spreading rumours or getting others to hurt the victim. Cyberbullying is another common form, which includes

4.

Parents too should model positive behaviour, so guard against gossiping, what you say and how you treat others as children will pick up on these traits.

5.

Talk about bullying in the home and that it’s not acceptable.

6.

Teach children to do something when theywitness bullying such as calling an adult for help or coming to the aid of the victim.

Teach your child appropriate social skills. Role play different scenarios with your child, such as how to join a game at school, make new friends, why it’s important to share and wait their turn, how to deal with conflict etc.

8.

Coach children on how to stand up to a bully. Help your child understand that a bully wants to feel powerful, so if you show emotion and fight back that’s exactly what he/she wants. A victim could potentially diffuse the situation by looking the bully in the eye and responding evenly and firmly.

9.

Lastly, report cases of bullying to the school and take further action.

If you are a victim of bullying and don’t know who to turn to, contact Pharma Dynamics’ tollfree helpline on 0800 205 026. For additional support, visit www.letstalkmh.co.za Issued by Meropa Communications on behalf of Pharma Dynamics.

2.

There are many behaviours that may look like bullying, but require different approaches, therefore it is important to understand exactly what bullying is. In short, it is a deliberate attempt to repeatedly hurt someone over an extended period.

Although many children feel too ashamed to admit they’re being bullied, they do give clues. Refusing to want to go to school, avoiding class, clamming up when you try to discuss school, asking for a change in routine, not wanting to participate in school activities or extra-murals, complaints of headaches, stomach cramps or nausea, a drop in academic performance, sudden bursts of anger, wanting to be left alone and unexplained bruises or injuries could all be signs that your child has fallen victim.

SAFETY TIPS FOR SHOW DAYS Open House or ‘Show Days’ has been proven to be a valuable way of introducing your home to prospective buys. But unfortunately, this also means that you could be unknowingly opening your doors to potential burglars who look to take advantage of the situation. There is safety in numbers, as Charnel Hattingh (National Marketing and Communications Manager at Fidelity ADT) explains. Hattingh says estate agents need to be security conscious and need to discuss the option of putting security systems in place before a Show Day. This, she adds, is not only to protect the sellers’ valuables and property, but to ensure the agents are safe as well. “We advise sellers to lock all their valuables away and to ensure that your agent understands your concerns regarding the safety and the security of your property on the day. Posting a guard on the premises and giving the agent access to a panic button is also a good idea.” While you cannot plan for every eventuality, Hattingh says the following pointers will help to discourage thieves from taking advantage of the situation. • When it comes to preparing your home for Show Day: • If someone stands in for your agent on the Show Day, insist on meeting them and explaining arrangements for your home. • If there is a panic button, ensure that the agent has access to it, along with your private security provider’s emergency number. • Alert your private security service provider that your home will be on show and ask them to stop by during the afternoon to check that everything is in order. • Do not leave spare keys for the home (for back, garage or patio doors) hanging on hooks that can be reached.

• Always lock away valuables that can easily fit into a handbag or pocket. Remember that drawers and bathroom cabinets can be opened and rifled through quickly, so remember to check that they do not contain valuable items. • Put away larger items of equipment that are not instrumental in showing off your home to stop criminals thinking they might have to return later when no one is home. • Open curtains and blinds or switch on lights in each room to discourage would-be thieves from untoward activity.

• • • • • •

There are also precautions for agents or owners who supervise on Show Day: If possible, position yourself where you can see prospective buyers’ vehicles as they arrive and make a note of their registration numbers, the make and model of the car. Don’t be shy to ask your visitors to stay with you while you walk through the home together. This will avoid a situation where one person wanders off unsupervised during the viewing. While you are conducting a viewing, do not leave the front entrance of the home open. It is important to check that intercoms, buzzers and doorbells are in good working order. Consider a Show Day where you encourage “by appointment” viewings. This will avoid overlap between groups of visitors. If visitors do arrive while you are talking to someone, encourage them to fill in the visitor’s book or take a look at the garden and outdoor facilities to buy some time. Ask your security company if they offer any special mobile panic button service, which you can keep with you when on duty at a show house.

Barry Berman founded Mekaish Group 24 years ago introducing a marketplace for low digit and unusual CA number plates to car enthusiasts and collectors alike throughout Cape Town. He is a prominent and well-known figure in the automotive industry throughout SA since introducing personalised number plates, thereby giving motorists the ultimate choice in expressing themselves, marketing a brand or just having fun. Approximately 12 years ago he set his sights on the fragmented traffic fine industry and Mekaish Traffic Fine Management is now the market leading business in assisting motorists and fleets in receiving their national fine status report, receiving a discount, paying of

fines, and finally issuing receipts. No fees are charged so the consumer saves making it perfect sense to be on the Mekaish platform. Berman states, “Managing fleet traffic fines has resulted in a visible change in behavior of drivers who are penalized timeously for traffic infringements. This saves lives on our roads and safer driving protects our client’s fleets from accidents and damage.” Motorists who don’t pay their fines are now finding it impossible to renew their license discs as Municipalities are blocking these ID numbers. This may result in further fines for expired licenses as well as insurance companies not honoring a claim if the license disc has lapsed.
