Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want

ED’S LETTER Autumn is here. There’s a definite chill in the air and the leaves are turning. For those with school going children, term 2 has begun. The pace of this year is relentless. It’s easy to get slightly lost in the hustle and bustle. My suggestion is to trim down to bare basics, like Autumn pruning. Spend most of your time and energy on the things that are truly important to you. I’m not suggesting a Marie Kondo clear out of your entire home, although that wouldn’t be a bad thing, but a clear out of all those activities that you do because you feel you ‘have to.’ Learn to say no, pass over the

ADOLESCENT GROWTH SPURT IN YOUNG ATHLETE HAMSTRING-CALF STRAIN By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

‘As the twig is bent, so grows the tree’ ~ William Garner Sutherland (1873 – 1954)

A muscle strain is typically a muscle tear or “pull”, and is a common injury among young athletes. A muscle strain/tear is graded according to its severity. A grade I strain is a small tear and heals quickly; a grade II strain is a partial tear (part of the muscle stays normal, part of it tears); a grade III strain is a complete tear of the muscle. It is very common in the back of the thigh, the hamstring muscles help flex or bend the knee and the calf muscle. Growth spurts in athletic children may lead to an increased incidence of injury. Muscles and bones grow at different rates. Bones grow at a quicker rate

than muscles and tendons. The long bones of the thigh (femur) and lower leg (tibia, fibula) grow in length before the muscles and tendons elongate causing the muscles to be drawn out and increase the normal resting tension of the muscles (hamstrings, calves, popliteus). This can cause traction, tightness and, eventually, inflammation of the muscles and tendons. This rapid growth spurt makes it more difficult for muscles to contract with the same amount of force required before the growth spurt. This affects muscle strength and efficiency in sport as well as day to day activities. Muscles may fatigue more quickly and be less efficient than before a growth spurt. If engaging in sport on a frequent basis or at a high level during a growth spurt places high demands on the muscles and they may gradually tighten relative to the longer bones. This therefore means that muscles and or joints may get very inflexible. Awareness of this is a short-term situation is important, and encouragement to maintain a comfortable level of exercise, sports participation that does not hurt will help avoid injuries during this period. It is still great to encourage them but keep in mind that the growing body and immature skeleton is ever-changing. This makes children more vulnerable to injury. This is why you should never assume growing pains are nothing to worry about in an active child. This could be the time to take some precautionary steps to avoid injury. Keep an eye on your child’s movement. If their running or kicking has changed, or if your child complains of pain, that can be the first sign something is not functioning correctly. A child who loves their sport

might not complain of the activity being painful, so it is important to ask if you’re not sure. Consulting an osteopath will help the patient safely through this period with exercise and advice. It is important to manage rapid growth in athletic children appropriately and allow the rest of the body to catch up with the bones especially with the demands of rugby, dance, gymnastics or other sport increase. Stretching the tight muscles may actually be harmful during this stage as this will cause more pulling on the tendons inserting into the bones. It can be painful and may lead to injuries. Children can still exercise, but they may be more susceptible to injury at this time, and it is not a good time to increase exercise frequency or intensity. Should there be any sign of injury, cut down on exercise frequency and intensity until the growth spurt is over. If children are engaging in sport at school in physical education lessons, playing sport at break time and have different sports most afternoons of the week and weekends including matches and races. It can soon add up to hours and hours of sporting activities, which increases the load already placed on the stressed growing body. Osteopathy can not only help with hands-on pain relief but also with the planning and progression of activities. If your child does have any concerns or pain following a growth spurt, contact your osteopath to discuss ways to help your child manage their taller body better and prevent growth related injury!

CHERISE WILLEIT:

WINNER OF THE CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR By Danni Thunell Ende

Cherise won her fourth Cape Town Cycle Tour title after sprinting to victory in the wom-

en’s race at the Green Point stadium recently. Her enthusiasm for the future of women’s racing is contagious.

What sparked your interest in cycling? I started cycling at the age of 9 with my whole family and it was a fun way for us to spend time together. I quickly developed a competitive spirit and loved racing. I’ve never looked back. How do you manage to balance your training and family needs? I took a break from competitive racing in 2016 when my first son was born and only started a proper training routine in December 2018. It’s tough to manage it and I do take it day by day. I try and do my intervals on the indoor trainer when my baby is sleeping. I also try and incorporate my kids into my training so we sometimes take Thomas with on a baby seat or I will meet my family halfway through my ride for a coffee. Have you seen the sport of cycling grow and change in South Africa over the last 10 years? Definitely! Women’s cycling went through a bit of a dip 2/3 years ago but seeing the amount of women in the racing bunch at the moment is so impressive and inspiring. There are a lot of youngsters coming up with so much potential and they definitely aren’t scared of making the racing fast and aggressive. There has also been an increase of sponsorship in the women’s field which is the biggest motivation for more women to start racing. Do you think the awareness around road safety for cyclists has improved? I think that we still have a long way to go. I do also know that it comes from both sides and cyclists also need to obey the road rules but I feel like motorists see cyclists as objects and not people.

Untitled-2 1

What would you be doing if you weren’t operating in the professional cycling realm? I would love to be a wedding co-ordinator. I love everything about weddings. What would you describe as the ultimate experience of your cycling career? Winning the Cape Town Cycle Tour is definitely up there with one of my biggest victories. How do you enjoy spending your time when you’re not on your bike? Running around after my eldest son. He is such a lively, energetic spirit and loves the outdoors. I love seeing his imagination run wild. My family are the most important people in my life so spending time with them is my favourite thing How do you manage to stay in peak physical and mental condition? I set short term goals for myself and celebrate them if I achieve a goal. I also visualise a situation in my head and the outcome that I want to achieve. Being a Mum yourself, would you encourage cycling from a young age? I would definitely, it’s such an incredible way for families to spend time together in nature. What’s next on your list for 2019? We are going over to Europe for 3 months and then returning to SA in August where I will focus on the Summer classics and hopefully find a sponsor that will help me achieve my dreams and goals for the future.

TO TRUST OR NOT TO TRUST Most people prefer not to think about what will happen once they exchange the temporary for the everlasting. Failure to prepare adequately only results in unnecessary problems at a time when people are emotionally upset and most vulnerable. The most common approach is to draw up a will in order to ensure that your estate is administered according to your wishes. Most people however, do not realise that the administration of a deceased’s estate usually take a long time to finalise and can be a costly exercise. Further to the aforementioned the deceased’s assets and bank account are frozen until the final distribution of his/her estate, which means that his/her direct family does not have access to the deceased’s funds. An alternative solution to making a will is to set up a trust during one’s lifetime. With careful planning this can eradicate delays and costs and provide other benefits such as protecting assets from creditors and/ or other litigious actions. The use of trusts as a means of holding and passing on family and/or wealth, even for modest estates, has increased dramatically in recent years. TRUSTS – THE CONCEPT Unlike a company, a trust is not a legal entity. It is best described as a relationship; an arrangement whereby property is transferred from one person (the founding trustee) to trust which holds the property for the benefit of specified people or objects (the beneficiaries). A trust deed sets out the terms and conditions upon which the trustees must hold and administer the trust assets. The trust deed also sets out the rights and interests of the beneficiaries. Those unfamiliar with the trust concept may be concerned about transferring ownership of their property to be managed by other trustees as a trust cannot only have one trustee. These concerns are addressed in the deed of trust by setting out the terms of the management of the trust assets, voting and amendment of the trust. Often the founding trustee have majority voting rights to ensure a certain level of control of his/ her assets. All domestic trusts also have an indepen-

dent trustee (nominated by the founding trustee) to ensure a certain level of objectivity and transparency in the management of trust assets. Another option to consider is the registration of a foreign trust in another country. This concept might seem unfamiliar and almost intimidating to most people as we tend to associate foreign trusts with “hiding” assets. This could not be further from the truth as having a foreign trust just adds another layer of protection to one’s assets. Simply put, it can be seen as not putting all of your eggs in one basket. Foreign trusts have many advantages and are mainly used for asset and wealth protection and estate planning. When registering a foreign trust, the host country/jurisdiction have to comply with anti-money laundering regulations and will conduct their own due-diligence assessment to determine a potential client’s risk profile and source of wealth. Domestic and foreign trusts have many advantages which includes asset protection, estate planning, avoiding delays in the case of a deceased estate and provides a degree of flexibility in granting the deceased’s family immediate access to funds should it be the deceased’s wishes. Foreign trusts have the added advantages of providing founding trustees with a level of confidentiality as all of the information, including the trustees, beneficiaries and the terms of the trust deed is kept completely confidential and disclosure to third parties will only be granted in very particular circumstances and only granted when accompanied by a court order. Should you require any further information regarding the registration and management of domestic and/or foreign trusts, please contact Charlaine Kidson from Pittas & Co attorneys at charlaine@pittas.co.za.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU REVIEWED YOUR FINANCIAL PORTFOLIO? Its always great to operate in a country where savings, investments and pensions are encouraged at a young age and in the work place.

2.

As a business we very rarely come into contact with professionals in South Africa that do not have some form of insurance, investment or pension which is fantastic.

5.

3. 4.

6. 7.

Poor performing funds compared to others on the market

Higher than average advisor on-going costs Multiple charging structures over numerous

policies instead of one consolidated structure All funds provided by a single asset manager

Trusts that no longer have the same benefits

they did at set up due to legislation changes Zero offshore exposure

That said, it is staggering to see how many have not had a fee and/or structure check within the last 2 years or even at all since they started a specific policy.

8.

Since Carrick wealth ventured into the local SA market with the launch of “integrated financial planning” we have placed a large emphasis on providing fee and structural checks for professionals across the country so they may ascertain if their policies are still as cost effective as they once were and to see if the trust, wrapper or platform still makes viable sense for them as a vehicle.

10. Old RA’s that could form part of your estate

What we are mainly finding out is, that the client often isn’t aware of: 1.

High cost funds paying their advisor a “trail” commission

9.

Life insurance / critical illness policies not being updated to reflect current liabilities

Archaic pricing structures that are out of date for RA’s, Insurances and investment policies

11. Business assurance that neglects new key personnel

12. Buy/sell agreements set up incorrectly or not updated to reflect current company valuations All of the above, and more, findings can be solved very simply, quickly and could have huge financial benefits to your overall financial portfolios. These changes could also lead to avoiding some very large costly future issues.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE

TO SUBMIT YOUR PROPERTY VALUATION OBJECTION

Now that the City of Cape Town’s latest General Valuation (2018) roll has been published, and owners of properties would have received notification in the mail of what their property’s latest valuation is, it is also time to submit objections if it is found that the value seems incorrect. The updated valuation roll can also be viewed by going to the city of Cape Town’s website- www.capetown.gov.za and any objections to these must be submitted by the end of April 2019. While valuations should be done every four years by law, the City of Cape Town has adopted a three-year cycle to reduce the impact on owners’ accounts, should their properties have increased in value by an exponential amount. In some areas of Cape Town property values have increased by more than the national average because of the location and demand of certain types of property but in some areas this inflation has levelled off or values have even dropped, so the valuation (based on previous growth rates) are not wholly accurate.

It is important to get an independent valuation done, comparing properties sold in the same category and area, at around the same time as the valuation was done, i.e. 2 July 2018. Once the value of the property has been ascertained, according to a comparative market analysis, it is possible to submit your objection online by downloading the objection form from www. capetown.gov.za/propertyvaluations and submitting the completed form to valuations@capetown.gov.za or through the City’s web services at https://eservices.capetown.gov.za/irj/portal. Once the appeal form is sent to the city, a date will be sent to you on which you will be allowed to make representation to the Valuation Appeal Board as to why you disagree with the city’s valuation of your property. On the day, you may take a lawyer or valuator with you in order to help you make your case to the board. Your property attorney can guide you through the objection process if it seems too daunting to tackle on your own and will arrange the market analysis as well as complete and submit the necessary forms on your behalf, at a nominal fee.

AUTUMN TRENDS FOR COSY INDOOR LIVING Pick Your Palette

Colour experts at the Pantone Color Institute released their Pantone Color Trends for 2019. Shades are taking a more mindful approach. The Pantone colour of the year is ‘Living Coral’ - an earthy shade that is felt to be “welcoming, optimistic and intimate”. If coral doesn’t work for you, Pantone also recommends natural woodland shades, hunter and forest greens, moody and misty blues, optimistic yellows and pale pinks.

Stimulate Your Senses

According to the World’s Global Style Network (WGSN), this is the year consumers will place great importance on the senses when it comes to design, so rooms that draw on light, colour and textures will provide the best experiences. Elize van der Berg, CEO of Beetroot Inc. says, “Stimulating the senses is something that Beetroot Inc. has always had close to its heart… How do we cater to those who love lighter, more natural shades as well as those looking for bright pops of colour to accentuate a room? How do we offer a more tactile product that speaks to upcoming design trends but also more simplistic designs for those looking to play down certain aspects of their surroundings in order to emphasise others? How do we create products that evoke emotion through imagery?”

Speaking of Sustainability

Once a niche movement, WGSN says sustainability will be a firm brand expectation. For consumers, reusable products will continue to gain an edge becoming more desirable to a larger audience. “Our eco-range also speaks to the ever-growing trend of sustainability”, adds Van der Burgh.

Finding the Right Furniture

ture of the material adds a little something extra. Mixed materials – for instance metal frames and wooden shelves or metal frames and glass coffee table tops create contrast and can become statement pieces in the home. Multifunctional furniture – as spaces get smaller and people try to simplify their homes the need for multipurpose furniture endures.

Of course, choosing a piece of furniture depends on your personal taste and what you are trying to achieve with your space, with two of the biggest things to keep in mind being comfort and aesthetics. Saying that, there are a few trends for 2019 that extend on those from the past year.

Handcrafted customisation – again, smaller spaces means that many have to order bespoke pieces to fit their interiors. The fact that there are never two quite the same speaks to shift away from mass produced furniture; hand-made is the order of the day and if there is a story behind the piece even better.

Wood – the natural look and feel of wood, particularly unpolished, has timeless appeal and the visual tex-

The answer? A range of gorgeous yet practical designs that can be customised to fit any space with a variety of textured fabric heavy products to feed the sense of touch. The journey of Vanilla House Interiors has been a delightful experience for me over the last 22 years. It has taken me to the four corners of the world allowing my expansion of design and creativity to be expressed in the unique look of Vanilla House Interior’s handwriting. From importing over the first 15 years, I chose to restructure my business model to support local factories and in doing so I am able to offer bespoke and custom made furniture for clients who can envisage their look and feel. Vanilla House Interior’s website, www.vanillahouseinteriors.co.za, speaks for itself in show casing unique designs for a contemporary modern home with clean lines that allow a timeless statement. Having moved to Cape Town and now without a shop, my website is the key to my new shop. I am offering an Interior Decorating Service to all clients when needed, including blinds, curtaining, carpeting etc. Looking at trends for 2019, bold colours are key. Rich hues throughout the home in the form of upholstery ensures that the furniture pops. Organic greens, reds, burnt yellow and citrus tones brings memories of the 70’s back into play. The continued statement hues of pink will carry through from 2018 as will the undeniable blues which will reign supreme. Luxurious velvet fabrics will make a comeback, influenced by the Art Deco Era, mixed with black

and white Geometric patterns which brings in amazing personality into any space. Large Florals in colour play an important role too. Rugs in geometric patterns that are more loose, over scaled and with asymmetrical shapes showing off the perfectly imperfect look will be popular. This detail is carried through into interesting wall papers creating bold fun on the walls. Natural texturized materials are continuing to feature inside the home. Natural stone, concrete, marble and granite merge luxury and practicality in a way that makes indulgence more palatable. The ‘curve’ is the continued trend in design for furniture into 2019. Round shapes on sofas, chairs, dining chairs and tables on legs and backs is where the curvy trend will feature. Mirrors and rugs will continue to be influenced with this shape too. Rose gold in metal detail will take a back seat, paving the way for more of the gold, brass and blackened metals together with copper accents. Woods are trending towards oxidized oak which is a blackened version of the white oak. Walnut tones are becoming the new neutral and pairs well with the greys and neutrals. Matt coloured furniture will play an interesting statement role in a room giving a quiet sense of dignity and grace while remaining ultra cool. 2019 insights look exciting and I look forward to incorporating this into projects going forward.

ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION BEFORE LETTING STRANGERS IN. Messages on social media regularly circulate, relaying incidents involving impersonators posing as repairmen, security or even police officers. While many of these messages are later exposed as hoaxes, it is worth heeding the advice to err on the side of caution before letting strangers inside. Homeowners can take precautions, assures Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications manager for Fidelity ADT. “Certain individuals will always try to take advantage. Having a cautious approach is always good and can help you avoid becoming a victim. Impersonators are fond of creating fictional characters from the services sector and using it for their purposes. This gives them access to your home by claiming to fix or check your alarm system, WiFi network or water leaks on your property.”

which has their photograph.” Technicians are also identifiable and will make prior appointments before arriving.

Whether you are at work or running errands, the safety of your home and loved ones should not be the cause of unnecessary stress.

If any individual requesting access cannot provide a legitimate reason for visiting your property and authentic credentials, they should not be allowed to enter.

Hattingh recommends the following checklist: • Does everyone who resides and regularly works on your property know how to activate the alarm in the case of an emergency? • Does everyone know the numbers of the essential emergency services, the SAPS and your security provider? • Have they been briefed on the correct protocol before allowing the relevant individuals on to the property?

“Ensure employees are equipped to handle themselves and the safety of anyone else on the property. A home security system is more than just an alarm system and strategically placed safety apparatus. How individuals respond in the face of imminent danger is essential,” says Hattingh.

Employees on the property should be briefed on any expected deliveries or appointments, recommends Hattingh.

She adds that while everyone needs to know how to arm the alarm system, not everyone needs to know how to disarm it.

In the case of verifying security officers and technicians, Hattingh suggests the following tips.

“Young children and new employees don’t necessarily need to know all the passwords. Ideally, employees should be given their own passwords which makes keeping track of events much easier (especially if something goes wrong),” says Hattingh.

“Fidelity ADT Armed Response Officers carry a branded ID card with their name, PSIRA number and a photograph. They also carry a PSIRA card
