A WARRIOR WOMAN

February 2019 15 000 Copies

Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want

ED’S LETTER This year is galloping along at a frantic pace. For those of us with children it’s back to

school and lunchboxes and endless lifting

and it’s also back to the workplace for many of us. The festive season break is a distant

memory and many people I’ve spoken to are already feeling exhausted before the year’s even begun. It’s no secret we’re all guilty of

trying to cram in too much and often push the boundaries of what we’re capable of. With

Valentine’s Day around the corner perhaps

it’s time to -not only look at our romantic love interests- but to practice a little self love?

Our cover star, Leigh-Anne Williams admits her mantra is all about taking time out for

herself. It’s imperative. Whether it’s a weekly art/pottery/cooking class, a massage, a walk

followed by coffee with a friend. Whatever fills your cup up and settles the troubled waters

of your soul. Overly philosophical and easier

said than done, you say? Indeed! But hopefully not impossible. If you have time to write in,

we’d love to hear how you’ve managed a little self-loving this Valentines month.

LEIGH – ANNE WILLIAMS: A WARRIOR WOMAN

By Danni Thunell Ende

TV, radio presenter and emcee Leigh-Anne Williams, best known for co-hosting the Expresso Show on SABC3, as well as hosting her own radio show – Lunch with Leigh-Anne – on Good Hope FM, is this year celebrating 12 years in the media and entertainment industry. With a captivating smile and a more than confident demeanour, Williams consistently carves out her own path in the world of entertainment and is a true inspiration for our cover. Tell us about your journey from recruitment to media and entertainment. I worked in recruitment for 8 years at UWC and Stellenbosch University respectively. During my time at UWC, I arranged a career expo for 20 000 learners in the Western Cape and ended up doing radio interviews to promote the event. That is where I fell in love with radio. A year later I pursued a radio opportunity and 3 years later Expresso came along.

But in 2018, it became a priority and now it’s a mantra I live by.

You value staying in peak physical shape- any tips for us mere mortals? Lol, it’s a never ending journey. You literally have to take it moment by moment. You can’t plan too far ahead because the moment you’re in right now is what matters the most. You just have to try and make good choices every day. And on days that you don’t, just pick it up the next day.

Any valuable life lessons you can impart to a young actor starting out? There is no time limit to making your dreams come true. But you have to put in the work. Make sure you are the best at what you do, and that only comes with practice. Take any and every opportunity you can to grow and excel.

How do to manage your busy life whilst still managing ‘self-care’? Self-care is what makes managing my life possible. I have to take time out from time to time. I haven’t been very good with that in the past.

6

Describe the best and worst moment of your career. Best moment: Strictly Come Dancing! Hands down. Wow, what an experience. That competition seriously changed me and addressed the biggest fears and insecurities I had! I have never felt so empowered in my life! Worst: Not winning:)

Tell us more about Strictly Come Dancing. Have you always loved to dance? I have always loved dance. I used to do spiritual dancing as a child. It was possibly the best experience of my life. It pushed me in ways I never thought it could.

HOUT BAY MONTESSORI Hout Bay Montessori was founded in April 1984 by a group of dedicated parents who greatly admired the works of Maria Montessori. 35 years old, our school is a flagship in educational institutions in Cape Town.

Through the use of the child-centred Montessori philosophy and curriculums, it is our mission to nurture and develop the intellectual, physical, spiritual, artistic and academic interests inherent to your child.

Hout Bay Montessori strives to serve the local community by providing an authentic Montessori education for all. We aim to foster a learning environment that emphasises respect for the child, freedom of self-expression, self-education, love of learning, personal and social responsibility as well as academic excellence.

“There is a great sense of community within the Montessori classroom, where children of differing ages work together in an atmosphere of cooperation rather than competitiveness. There is respect for the environment and for the individuals within it.” - Maria Montessori

Creating a sense of community amongst parents, teachers, and children is vital, and this “connectedness” is an important characteristic of a true Montessori school. What is child-centered learning? It is about seeing learning through the eyes of a child. It is trusting the child’s natural ability to learn within his/her environment when given the appropriate tools to succeed at mastering various skills, excelling academically, and reaching personal developmental milestones.

Hout Bay Montessori runs from Nursery to Grade 7, and currently has 1 Nursery Class (18 months - 3 years), 2 Preschool Classes (3 - 6 years), 2 Junior Primary Classes (6 - 9 years), and one Senior Primary Class (9 - 13 years). We offer Aftercare daily till 5pm, and a healthy lunch is served every day. For more information, or to book a tour of our beautiful school, please call us on 021 790 3309, email us at admin@houtbaymontessori.co.za, or visit our website - www.houtbaymontessori.co.za

WHILE PLANNING YOUR WEDDING, REMEMBER TO INCLUDE THE ALL-IMPORTANT ANTENUPTIAL CONTRACT Many couples will spend months planning their wedding, but often one of the most important aspects of planning a future together is left until later to finalise. An antenuptial contract is often something that couples do not want to talk about, sometimes even believing they’re setting themselves up to fail – but this is not the case. Drawing up a contract before getting married can be seen as a sign of mutual care for each other’s financial and legal independence, and responsibilities.

Many don’t see a marriage as a business partnership, but it should be seen as such and broached in the same manner. In the time you’re married, you will have accumulated certain wealth, whether in property or other investments, and these should in fairness be divided according to what each partner has accrued in the time they were married, in the event death or divorce.

Signing an antenuptial contract gives each partner in marriage financial and legal independence. It gives you the power to deal with your own financial decisions and property transactions, without putting your partner at risk.

Another aspect of financial protection through an antenuptial contract is that on the death of a spouse, the surviving partner’s estate continues as normal and he or she will be able to continue as normal while waiting for the other’s estate to be wound up. In the case of community of property, the whole estate is frozen in that time and the surviving partner can find themselves in a dire financial situation.

In any person’s life there will be financial ups and downs and an antenuptial contract will protect your partner against insolvency, as each estate remains separate. In the unfortunate event of an insolvency, whatever a spouse has gained cannot be touched to recoup the debt of the other.

Your family lawyer will be able to assist in drafting the right antenuptial contract for you: and it should be seen as something that must be done before the knot is tied, and not later in life, as this is part of the beginning of your future together.

ENTREPRENEURS ARE NOT CRAZY RISK TAKERS, THEY ONLY TAKE CALCULATED RISKS. With a business and financial plan in hand, they are also strongly focused on making the venture work, taking calculated risks, growing the business and eliminating obstacles and distractions in the way of their goal. Apart from these traits, successful entrepreneurs are typically people who are disciplined, confident, open-minded, self-starters, competitive, creative, determined and possess strong people skills. Armed with these qualities, the entrepreneurial journey of each new venture will take them through various stages, from planning and inception, to expansion and diversification, maturity and finally exit, when the business is sold, or the entrepreneur retires. Thus, in planning and building up a business to the envisaged end goal, the entrepreneur takes a long-term view of the venture, guided by a sound business plan and leaving nothing to chance. Unfortunately, they all too often fail to take the same view or measures when it comes to their own personal financial affairs and future retirement. The various steps, measures and options that go into planning and developing the personal financial or wealth journey should resonate well with entrepreneurs. A personal financial plan should also start with a vision, completing a needs analysis, looking at available resources, setting goals and a strategy

14

to achieve them, and putting it all together in an integrated personal financial plan, which is then implemented just like the entrepreneur’s business plan. So why is it then, given these similarities, that entrepreneurs so often neglect their own, personal financial planning? If this sounds like you, it is strongly recommended that you consult with a professional financial planner. The common mistakes often made when it comes to personal financial planning: Too busy, so things get put off. Fully consumed by your entrepreneurial efforts, you know you need to plan and invest for your future but put it on hold because you’re “too busy”. Build, sell and move on. If you’re a serial entrepreneur, you’re focussed on building a business, selling it and moving on to the next one. As a result, you don’t have a company pension scheme and put the cash you earned into the next venture leaving you without a nest egg for retirement. A risky retirement plan. With all your wealth invested in your business ventures, that’s a very risky retirement plan. What if something goes wrong before then? Poor investment advice. Lacking personal wealth investment knowledge, you may have invested in a financial product where your money is tied up and early access to it may incur penalties. Or, you may be sitting with a large sum of cash in

a bank account where it is not working optimally for you. Not differentiating between being rich or wealthy. You may make a lot of money and not worry about tomorrow. People who are rich often spend their money almost as fast as they make it…on houses, cars, holidays... Those who are wealthy take a different view. Most truly wealthy people live relatively simple lives – they plan for and invest in their long-term future. Just as you, the entrepreneur, would employ experts in various fields to help you grow your business, it is highly recommended to have an experienced, independent and qualified personal financial adviser or wealth specialist to assist you. Such an adviser can assist entrepreneurs with vitally important aspects such as including their business vision in their personal financial planning and having an integrated wealth management plan that is tailored to their individual, personal and business needs. To book a discovery session to discuss any of the above email greg.stockton@carrick-wealth.com

The time to treat sun damage is now When it comes to sun damage, prevention is always best, but if the deed’s already done, Skin Renewal can help you reverse it. Invest in an in-office solution

Unprotected sun exposure will always result in sun damage, something that only becomes apparent later. The most obvious sign is pigmentation but as you also damage your skin’s collagen supply, you create wrinkles and sagging. You can also expect broken blood vessels that cause redness as well as dull-looking skin that has a ‘rough’ texture.

Skin Renewal’s Pigmentation & Sun Damage Solutions are packages consisting of several treatments that enhance each other’s effects to make a much more dramatic difference. For example, our Starter Pigmentation and Sun Damage Solution includes the application of tranexamic acid and a SAMA peel to improve mild pigmentation, fine lines and a rough texture. If your condition’s more severe you’ll get better results from something like our Grand Pigmentation and Sun Damage Solution. It includes a Fraxel laser and Laser Genesis session to minimise dark marks, increase collagen production, improve skin texture and minimize redness.

Heal your skin at home A specialised skincare routine can help diminish the effects of sun damage and creating one is something our Skin Renewal therapists can happily help you with. For example, you can reduce the look of pigmentation using products that contain ingredients like Arbutin, niacinamide (vitamin B3) and kojic acid. Wrinkles and loose skin can be improved with retinol and certain peptides that boost your skin’s natural collagen supply. Lastly, exfoliating alpha hydroxy acids can help you smooth out your skin.

After cutting out all gluten I still had health issues, so I started reading and learning everything I could about diet, foods and lifestyle. Along with my own research I completed a diploma in nutrition with distinctions. I am now completely free of all health issues and am inspired to help others lead a healthier life. What are the most rewarding and most challenging aspects of your career? I love helping and motivating people to discover a healthier way of life, whether it be through food or through yoga or both. Seeing people’s health improve is the best reward I could ask for. The most challenging aspect would be keeping people motivated. Life is busy and it’s very easy for people to fall back into old habits. What services do you offer? Kitchen and lifestyle consultations – The best way to assess a client’s lifestyle is to have a look in their kitchen. I do an assessment of what foods are currently in your kitchen and look closely at the client’s daily lifestyle. I then advise on what to change and how to change it.

Private Yoga – I teach Vinyasa Yoga focussing on breathing and movement to free your mind and create space for stillness in the busy world we live in, whilst giving you a full body workout. Massages – I have a team of top masseuses that are very professional and reliable. I bring the spa to you. Personalised retreats – I offer a personalised day of wellness and fun in the comfort of your own home for you and your friends. The retreats sound exciting. Please tell us more. Spas can be expensive, and we don’t all have the time to spoil ourselves. I bring the spa experience to your home. You can customise the day according to what you and your friends would like. This can include yoga, massages and a variety of add-ons including Tarot Card and Astrological readings, Organic spray tans, Canvas Painting class, a Happiness Coach and Craft Gin tastings. You can also choose to have a private chef. What makes you unique? My biggest draw card is that all my services are mobile. This allows clients to be in the comfort of their home. Besides this comfort, this also saves the client time and the frustration of traffic, parking and no intimidating gyms.

DYNAMIC WARM UP By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

‘‘Dynamic stretching has shown to improve performance.’

Research suggests that static stretching can negatively influence muscle strength and power and may result in decreased functional performance.’ - Journal of Strength and Conditioning, 2012

A dynamic warm-up is a sequence of movements done dynamically to restore suppleness and prepare muscles, connective tissues, joints and the nervous system for physical activity with the purpose of promoting muscular force. The idea is to start with some light jogging and low–impact compound multiple joint movements (push, pull, squat) to allow the body to adjust to movement, and then progress to more explosive movements. Each dynamic warm-up can be tailored to be ‘sports specific’. An example of a dynamic warm-up for a rugby session may include: hip dominant squats, lunge walks, push-ups (plus any other compound natural bodyweight movement), short distance sprints (0-20m), reactive agility drills (e.g. evasion games to simulate play) and the use of tackling pads.

FIT MEALS CAPE

Dynamic warm-ups have shown to dramatically improve performance and because they require the muscles to activate through a range of movement, they stimulate the natural motor neuron patterns for activation of the muscles. Every training session, regardless of goal, ability level or sport, should include a dynamic warm-up to prepare sportspersons both mentally and physically and enable training at higher intensities whilst reducing the likelihood of injury and thereby improving overall performance.

activity. This is so important for every sportsperson or exercise enthusiast. However, warm-ups alone cannot prevent all injuries. When this fails, an osteopath may be able to help with recovery and a quick return to one’s sport of choice. Stretching and warm ups alone may not prevent a chronic issue from becoming a serious injury but through Osteopathic management and understanding of one’s movement, improved posture and performance and less potential for injury is possible.

Failure to effectively warm up may result in reduced muscle activation, muscle and joint strains, excessive tendon and ligament stress and movement issues that may result in ‘overuse injuries’ and ‘muscle imbalance’. An example of this is if the large muscles of the hips and pelvis are not properly activated prior to exercise, leading to increased mechanical loads on the spine and back pain as a result. In addition to this, if all the muscles in the legs are not warmed up in unison, there is a potential for the thigh muscles (quads) to be overloaded which also often leads to knee pain.

Osteopaths see a wide variety of sports injuries ranging from strained or pulled hamstrings, knee problems, strained rotator cuff muscles and compensatory muscle spasms secondary to an injury elsewhere in the body, as well as neck and back pain.

Many adults and children spend a lot of time sitting whilst working, studying or relaxing causing the muscles in the legs and hips (glutes, adductors, hamstrings and hip flexors) to chronically tighten and deactivate. A proper dynamic warm up can help to prevent injuries and prepare one’s spine and muscles for rigorous

PACKED & PREPARED HEALTHY MEALS TO CATER FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Research suggests that pre-exercise static stretching compromises subsequent performance by reducing force production, power output, running speed, reaction time and strength endurance. 104 experiments published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports came to the same conclusion. Static stretching after exercise is most often used by coaches and athletes to restore pre-exercise ranges of motion, rather than improving flexibility. Static stretching may be considered to improve flexibility on one’s off days but for pre-activity stretching, dynamic movements are certainly more appropriate.

The journey of Vanilla House Interiors has been a delightful experience for me over the last 22 years. It has taken me to the four corners of the world allowing my expansion of design and creativity to be expressed in the unique look of Vanilla House Interior’s handwriting. From importing over the first 15 years, I chose to restructure my business model to support local factories and in doing so I am able to offer bespoke and custom made furniture for clients who can envisage their look and feel. Vanilla House Interior’s website, www.vanillahouseinteriors.co.za, speaks for itself in show casing unique designs for a contemporary modern home with clean lines that allow a timeless statement. Having moved to Cape Town and now without a shop, my website is the key to my new shop. I am offering an Interior Decorating Service to all clients when needed, including blinds, curtaining, carpeting etc. Looking at trends for 2019, bold colours are key. Rich hues throughout the home in the form of upholstery ensures that the furniture pops. Organic greens, reds, burnt yellow and citrus tones brings memories of the 70’s back into play. The continued statement hues of pink will carry through from 2018 as will the undeniable blues which will reign supreme. Luxurious velvet fabrics will make a comeback, influenced by the Art Deco Era, mixed with black

and white Geometric patterns which brings in amazing personality into any space. Large Florals in colour play an important role too. Rugs in geometric patterns that are more loose, over scaled and with asymmetrical shapes showing off the perfectly imperfect look will be popular. This detail is carried through into interesting wall papers creating bold fun on the walls. Natural texturized materials are continuing to feature inside the home. Natural stone, concrete, marble and granite merge luxury and practicality in a way that makes indulgence more palatable. The ‘curve’ is the continued trend in design for furniture into 2019. Round shapes on sofas, chairs, dining chairs and tables on legs and backs is where the curvy trend will feature. Mirrors and rugs will continue to be influenced with this shape too. Rose gold in metal detail will take a back seat, paving the way for more of the gold, brass and blackened metals together with copper accents. Woods are trending towards oxidized oak which is a blackened version of the white oak. Walnut tones are becoming the new neutral and pairs well with the greys and neutrals. Matt coloured furniture will play an interesting statement role in a room giving a quiet sense of dignity and grace while remaining ultra cool. 2019 insights look exciting and I look forward to incorporating this into projects going forward.
