Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want

Whenever I travel abroad I become even more appreciative of our diverse city. Winelands, waterfalls, nature, mountains, gorgeous beaches and superb cuisine. We’ve truly got it all. That’s not to say we don’t have our problems. Anyone living here can attest to those. Despite these, there’s an enormous amount to be grateful for. May is a big month. It’s host to Mother’s Day- I’m a big fan of giving these tireless crusaders (yes- myself included) a day of recognition and relaxation. It also features the elections! On that note I have only one thing to say. Please vote. Happy Mother’s Day and have a great May!

BETHANY DICKSON: CHARMING AUDIENCES WORLDWIDE By Danni Martin
She’s a Naledi and Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nominated actress. For more than a decade, Bethany has been charming audiences by tackling some of musical theatres most iconic roles. After making her debut in High School Musical, she has since gone on to perform in Singin’ in the Rain, Sunset Boulevard, The Sound of Music, Grease and most recently, Matilda. Coming from a highly musical family was there ever any other career path you’d have chosen? Yes - although I had an extremely “musical” upbringing I did consider a few other options. I studied public relations but pretty much to the day, when my PR internship finished, I got an audition for my first professional production, and I was told I got the part. But I’ve never for one second doubted that this was where I was meant to be. How ‘cut-throat’ is the industry in South Africa and do you have any advice for aspiring actors? It’s all about what you make of it. Some people think the most cut-throat part is in landing that big role. But I would say the most cut-throat part can be once you have landed something... to have a career that survives thereafter. I feel it’s got a lot to do with making wise choices regarding who you get close to, keeping your head down, working hard, and protecting the work at all costs. Also, don’t let your successes or “failures” define you. Describe the production you’d most like to feature in, and the role you’d give your eye teeth to play. I love this question. Les Miserables - Fantine...and I would give an arm. (Kidding, not kidding) I am in love with the score and the story. So to play in it would be a dream come true. The King and I - Mrs Anna my grandmother played this role, and when my mom was in her 40’s she played the role, so for me it would be quite a full circle moment to be able to play in this incredible piece. May being Mother’s day month how has your Mum influenced you in your life? My mom is my absolute rock and mentor. She has shown me everything about living life as a
woman focused on God, your family and making dead sure you do everything with excellence. How do you balance the needs of being a Mum with your career and other demands? With the unwavering support of my husband, Gary and our family. I am truly blessed to have a real “village”. I also have a sense of humour - which has helped In times of desperation. How do you think the theatre set in South Africa compares to overseas productions? We have so much to be proud of. We have an excited, young and talented industry. I know for a fact that productions and performers here in SA are on par, if not better, than what you would find overseas. Describe your ideal weekend! Home, in Hout Bay. With my husband and my son. Ordering in Thai Café , with chocolates on standby for afterward. To have my brothers and parents and other family come visit and cause chaos. And church on a Sunday, and a Sunday roast at my mom’s afterward. So basically family, food and soul food at church. How do you go about preparing for your various roles and where do you draw inspiration from? I try to remain as blank as I can until I get to rehearsal. I will read my script and do some general thinking in the run up to rehearsals. And then I allow the director to move me and help me paint my character. What’s your all-time favourite movie and who’s your all-time favourite actor? Nothing Hill and Kate Winslet and Christoff waltz.

WHY SHOULD I REGISTER MY TRADEMARK? Intellectual property (often abbreviated ‘IP’) is a term that is used to describe a wide range of types of ‘intangible’ property. IP are often referred to be ‘intangible’ in the sense that they do not constitute physical assets but nonetheless their importance to companies, big or small, should not be underestimated. They are of fundamental importance to small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) as they enable such companies to grow and establish a reputation in the marketplace. One of the most common types of intellectual property is trademarks. A trademark is exactly what the name says; a ‘mark’ by which a business ‘trades’. It can be a unique name (such as McDonalds or Nike), or a unique symbol (such as the apple used for all Apple products). In terms of the Trademarks Act, a trademark can be any “mark” used or proposed to be used by a person in relation to goods or services for the purpose of distinguishing those goods and services from the same kinds of goods and services connected in the course of trade with any other person/business. A “mark” can be defined as any sign capable of being represented graphically, including a shape, name, signature, word, letter, numeral, configuration, pattern, colour or container for goods, or even a combination thereof. The concept of a trademark is therefore wide and have in the past been extended to even include smells and sounds. A common misconception that people have is that because their marks is so unique, they do not need to register it. The fact of the matter is that unless the trademark is registered, the proprietor of that mark will not have the exclusive right to use that mark throughout South Africa and other proprietors with the same or similar marks may use it as their own. Another benefit of registering your trademark is that you are entitled to restrain others from using not only the exact same mark, but also from using confusingly similar marks. A registered trademark also forms an intangible asset in your estate, capable of being valued (and sold) separately from your business. A great example is the Nike “swoosh device”, which is more valuable that all Nike’s movable assets put together.
Upon registering your trademark, your will receive a trademark registration certificate that will serve as your “proof of ownership” of that mark and prove your exclusive right to use that mark. In the event that you would want to sue another person and/or business for copying or using your mark, or a confusing similar mark, you simply provide your trademark registration certificate and will not be necessitated to lead extensive evidence to prove your right to exclusively use the mark. Registering a trademark is a long-term investment as its lifespan is perpetual, provided that it is renewed every 10 years for a nominal fee. How would I go about registering a trademark you might ask? It is actually quite simple. The first step would be to conduct a full search of the trademarks register. Should a confusingly similar mark already exist on the register, your mark will unfortunately not be available for you to register or use in trade. The term “confusingly similar” is a complicated and ever-changing with new case law constantly changing the playing field. It is thus highly recommended that the services of an experienced trademark attorney be sought to conduct the search and tend to the registration of the mark on your behalf. If your mark is available, the next step would be to determine in which class (or classes) of good and/or services to file your application. The trademarks register is divided into 45 classes of goods and services from which to choose from. The registration process is a lengthy one with several hoops to jumps through, but with the assistance of an experienced professional, the juice is definitely worth the squeeze. Should you require assistance with any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact writer at charlaine@pittas.co.za.

CANNOT DECIDE ABOUT MOVING YOUR MONEY OFFSHORE? Given the volatility of the rand and other factors, you are probably concerned about its impact and what you can do to protect your wealth. Like many others, you may have been thinking about moving some money offshore but you’re still undecided. You may have niggly questions like: • When is the right time- wait for recovery or transfer now? • Into which currency should I transfer and where will I get the best rates? • How and into which investments do I put my money once it’s outside South Africa for the best protection and growth? • What taxes will I have to pay and what will SARS and the Reserve Bank require? • What happens to my offshore funds when I die? So, what does one do? Fred van Niekerk, Director and Regional Head: Western Cape at Carrick Wealth agrees that the decision-making process around transferring rands offshore or investing internationally can be extremely daunting, quite complex, and understandably can cause much anxiety. “A good starting point to overcome this, is to speak to a professional expert who is not conflicted when making these decisions, that is, a qualified adviser who provides integrated local and offshore financial planning,” says Fred. As no-one can predict the future, one shouldn’t wait but plan proactively to hedge and minimise risk, says Fred. Ideally, you should have at least
50% of your liquid assets invested in markets outside South Africa. Once you are in this position the rand’s movements won’t affect you that much and you can spend less time worrying about short-term currency movements and focus more on your personal wealth plan, he says. There really is no ‘best’ time or timing when to transfer funds offshore. Even your best planning and timing can still be upset by unforeseen developments. Make your decision and then follow a disciplined approach of transferring every 3-6 months, no matter what the rand is doing, says Fred. The rate you get may vary in different quarters, but on average you should be fine.
If you are feeling undecided or have more questions, please contact Fred van Niekerk at fred. vanniekerk@carrick-wealth.com today.
How much may one take out of the country? R1-million discretionary allowance per annum: • No SARS tax clearance is required. • Any personal funds or credit or debit card payments already used internationally in the year, will be deducted from the total allowance. • R10-million investment allowance per annum: • A SARS tax clearance certificate is required, which can take up to 10 working days. • You can apply for the allowance once each calendar year, valid for 12 months, regardless if you are going to use it. So, it makes sense to apply anyhow.

WHY DO WE SABOTAGE OUR PARTNER’S HAPPINESS? How positive we are when our partner shares with us something they express with enthusiasm and feel strongly about, it turns out, not only speaks volumes about our attachment styles but also, has a significant impact on the quality and longevity of our relationships. Some of the actions we take may seem may insignificant, but can in fact be extremely meaningful and telling about our own personality, and can have implications on the well-being of our relationships. This is a particularly delicate subject in intimate romantic relationships, as moods between both partners tend to be contagious. It may be because our spirits are low, or simply, that we don’t have the patience nor empathy to come up with a more adequate response to the eagerness of our partner. They may have come home with some fantastic news or simply, in a positive frame of mind, while we, on the other hand, have not had the greatest day or feel dejected and uninterested.
The partner presents us with a cheery happy mood and good news, they’re full of excitement, and then some uncontrollable force takes control of our rationality and makes us shatter the mood with some morose, critical remark. The partner’s happy feelings immediately come to a halt; they sense the negativity that is oozing from us and respond to it by means of conflict or, by simply shrinking away. The way in which we respond relates back to how we formed attachments in our early lives, it is a lengthy and revealing subject in itself. We are acting in this way because our partners’ buoyant and breezy mood can come as a forbidding barrier to communication. We fear, that their current happiness could prevent them from knowing the shame or sadness, the worry or loneliness that lives within us. We are trying to shatter their spirits, because we are afraid of being lonely. In this instance, the happiness of the other is experienced as annoyance or betrayal – they appear to lack the empathy that they had once shown to us, which transforms them into a type of human being, who we feel angry toward
due to feeling let down, or that we are not sufficent to be the centre of their focus or love. Because we may be anxiously attached, the thought that they perhaps have discovered that we were not after all good enough for them, or that they have lost interest obsesses us. Therefore, at the height of their joy, we are stricken with horror: and at a deeper emotional level we may perceive that now may be the chosen moment for them to abandon us and leave us alone after having seen the most vulnerable parts of ourselves, which we may not have had the strength to disclose to anyone else or have hidden from others. Before you worry too much about your flaws in this area, it is worthwhile to introspect on your own life and learn about your own attachment styles that may have made you the way you are. If we approach our own journey of discovering what makes us this way we can learn why we are the way we are, and, that really, if you challenged them by repeatedly reminding yourself of your worth and achievements, while adopting a forgiving and caring mindset towards your shortcomings, you can really go a long way to managing and changing these negative elements.

RESISTANCE TRAINING IN ADOLESCENCE AND YOUTH
By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“‘Current research indicates that resistance training can be a safe, effective and worthwhile activity for children and adolescents provided that qualified professionals supervise all training sessions and provide age-appropriate instruction on proper lifting procedures and safe training guidelines. Regular participation in a multifaceted resistance training program that begins during the preseason and includes instruction on movement biomechanics may reduce the risk of sports-related injuries in young athletes.” ~ Faigenbaum and Myer plank type exercises . Strength training can also incorporate medicine balls, resistance bands and weighted sleds. These exercises load muscles in a controlled fashion and the tendons which attach to then build up stronger bone. Appropriately conducted strength training programs have a much lower risk of injury than many popular youth sports like soccer, rugby or netball. Participation in strength training can actually reduce the risk of children being injured when they play sports.
“Appropriate strength training programs have no apparent adverse effect on linear growth, growth plates or the cardiovascular system”.
Having strong bones in childhood lays a foundation for bone health throughout life. Children often place 4-6 ~ American Association of Pediatrics times their body weight in ground reaction forces, each time they stride during the sprinting motion. Explosive and rapid lifting of weights during routine strength training is not recommended, because safe technique may be difficult to maintain and body tissues may be stressed too abruptly. Weight lifting, bodybuilding and power lifting are competitive sports involving high-intensity training and are not recommended for adolescents. Maximal lifts before reaching physical maturity (usually around 16 years) are still not recommended. Strength training, when performed in a controlled, supervised environment, can help adolescents safely improve their strength and overall health and well-being. The health benefits of strength training far outweigh the potential risks, especially in today’s society where children struggle with poor posture and related neck, back pain, headaches. If your child or adolescent is struggling with back pain, neck pain, headaches, poor posture, sports injuries or exercise related pain please consult with your local osteopath for a full assessment, hands on treatment and advice. Osteopathy will help your child to be better posturally equipped for exercise. If young athletes are doing resistance exercises the right way, they get the most benefits, avoid injury and build habits for lifelong health and fitness.

SELECTING A NEW SECURITY PROVIDER? MAKE SURE YOU ASK THE RIGHT 4 QUESTIONS Appointing an armed response company for your home is becoming increasingly essential, with latest crime stats released by Fidelity ADT pointing towards housebreaking and common thefts as the most often reported types of crime. Selecting a new security company can be a daunting task if you haven’t figured out what you’re looking for. Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing and Communications manager for Fidelity ADT, suggests weighing all the options before deciding. SHE SAYS THERE ARE FOUR QUESTIONS TO ASK: 1. Are their officers properly trained and equipped? “This is crucial in the case of an emergency; a security provider that deploys efficient and welltrained officers should be a top priority,” advises Hattingh. It is advisable to ask the company what kind of training their response officers have received. It is also imperative to be aware of what kind of protective items they carry when patrolling and responding to emergencies. For example, do they have vehicles with armour plated windows, and are the officers protected with Kevlar vests? 2. Is the security company compliant? Check if the company is registered with the
20
industry regulatory agency, like the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). A company that isn’t registered won’t be held accountable for providing officers who are subpar. Non-compliant organisations are not bound to the industry’s regulations, which can negatively impact its services and employees. “The onus lies with the public to ask the relevant questions before entering into any agreement, and to be on the lookout for any potential ‘fly-by-night’ security providers,” says Hattingh. 3. What are you looking for? There are many technological advancements to make things convenient and give you peace of mind. CCTV cameras, home monitoring automation systems and mobile panic buttons are some of the options available to homeowners. The company should keep abreast with the latest industry trends. “Technology available on your smartphone can help you to arm or disarm your system remotely and view your property through security cameras, aside from receiving a notification when your alarm is set off,” explains Hattingh.
4. What is the cost? Ask about hidden costs and know what you will be paying for. To ensure good value for money, become acquainted with the various services on offer to suit your needs. “There is a big difference between merely offering a monitoring service as opposed to a full armed response service. Ask exactly what you will get for your money,” says Hattingh. “Doing your homework and considering all of these factors will help you find the best security company to keep you and your loved ones safe.” Issued on behalf of Fidelity ADT References: https://businesstech.co.za/news/technology/226821/robbery-hijacking-and-break-in-crimetrends-in-south-afric-2018/ https://www.sasecurity.co.za/governing-legislation/

WHEN YOUR TEAM BELIEVES IN YOU… By Denise Cowburn-Levy YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! I am just going to say that the pace of my life lately has been intense, perhaps more intense than usual. I choose this. I do. I know that friends and family do sometimes look on bewildered as I race around at a million miles an hour, asking themselves, and me….WHY? It’s simple. I love the variety of my days which include some of the following: a quiet meditation, developing recipes, managing and doing accommodation bookings for the Beach House Collection, a quick exercise session with the fabulous Jalene (who manages somehow in a very limited time to keep me in some kind of shape) doing the set up and arrangement for the functions at Ginger & Lime, dashing to the chiropractor to get my back fixed from lifting too many tables for said functions, strategy meetings with Gavin for Cape Town Productions, for the upcoming season, and viewing new premises for this venture, to shooting my new cook book and so much more. Oh and then there is the ever patient and loving husband, did I mention him? My rock, my anchor, for without him my feet would certainly not be on the ground. I get so involved in each and every project that I take on. I do the same with our precious times away, I become immersed in the experience. This time, I have a few loose ends to tie up, this article being one of them, and then I can hit the slopes. As I write this I am in the lounge of the W hotel in Verbier, which is slightly surreal, let’s be honest. We are part of a tribe of a hundred gathering here to celebrate a special someone’s 50th. The
snow-capped mountains are blinding in the sunlight as I look out, and the skies are the bluest of blues. I do a lot of things, and I am incredibly busy, but I do have the most amazing time out in incredible places like this in between. I live to travel. I am looking back on the week that was, and this is what I actually wanted to share. We shot almost 60 pics for the recipe book, as part one of the project. The preparation for this, from the final recipe selection, to the food orders, the styling for each and every shot and the logistics of schlepping this all up to the beach houses in Yzerfontein, was intense. I have such an amazing team. The air crackled and buzzed with energy as we shot the first shot. The flow and synergy between us was amazing. Not for one second was there any one ego that raised its head. Everyone worked as a unit. I have never experienced anything like this, it was so special. As I said to them after the 3 day shoot: “Woke early this morning with a smile on my face and memories of the past few days floating around in my head. What an amazing time it was. I am blown away, by all that we achieved in such a short space of time. Some of you didn’t even know if I could cook, or indeed if anyone would want to learn what I have to share. Others have no idea at all whether I can write, so you were working on your faith in me as a person, and I am humbled by this. For having that belief in me, I feel that I can do anything, achieve anything, and I will not let you down.”

THE BENEFITS OF GOING SOLAR
With SA having an abundance of sunshine we should be looking at using this resource rather than relying on fossil fuels. Solar technology has been around for over 25 years and there have been major changes in the costs and advances in battery technology. When looking at going solar there are a number of factors that will come into play: 1. 2. 3.
Significant ESKOM price rises Decreasing costs on solar technology How to prepare for load shedding - this decision should be based on the cost and impact of load shedding on your lifestyle.
Whilst battery technology is changing fast, a typical household should not try and store power to run pool pumps or washing machines during load shedding as batteries are still the most expensive component in solar. A typical solar panel is about the size of a door and can generate enough power to run 2-4 X 60 w bulbs, so to run a fridge, freezer and a pool pump at the same time a typical house would need to have at least 10-20 panels which would
By Eric Putsman
make a 3KwA / 5KwA system. Each appliance has a power rating, eg. a pool pump would be around 1KWA (approx. 6 panels to run) In SA we have on average 9 hours of sunlight in the summer and 5-6 hours during winter. The first investment we normally recommend is to prepare your home for the future by changing as many lights to LED as possible. The second thing is to ensure your main appliances are being run during the day time, such as pool pumps and washing machines. These are big users and would need significant battery packs to run. The main user of power is the geyser and we always recommend looking at this first, either as a stand-alone, or if going solar for the first time to integrate with the system so it’s heating during sunlight hours. A solar panel works by way of absorbing sunlight and creates DC power (same as a DC battery). This power is passed through a box called an inverter to create useful 240V AC which is then connected to your DB board . The size and complexity of this box will vary according to whether you need to run batteries, or send excess power back to the grid. The inverter manages the inflow from ESKOM compared to the amount of power being generated by the solar panels, naturally taking as much from the panels first.
There are 2 different ways batteries can be used. The fully integrated solar system with extensive batteries would be charged during the day and then the batteries can be used to run all major lighting and most of the house at night or during load shedding. We suggest keeping heavy-use appliances off the battery. A lower entry system would have just one battery charged from ESKOM and runs as a UPS to keep on basic systems such as the Wi-Fi and TV during load shedding. A domestic system can start at under R100,000 (depending on amount of batteries) and with this you can expect to save between 30% and 50% of your ESKOM bill. A fully integrated system with batteries would start at around R100,000 R200,000 where you would aim to save 50% to 80% with most of the house being catered for at night or during load shedding. All solar solutions require appropriate licences to ensure the systems have been installed safely. Ensure your installer is registered and has the necessary certifications to undertake your job. PLAN TO STAY WARM AND SAVE MONEY THIS WINTER Thinking ahead will often save you money. Last-minute decisions or leaving things until they become a crisis generally don’t. It’s why prepping your home for winter is usually time well invested.
in. Alternatively, you can make or buy a sausage-dog draught-stopper to block the gap. Do the same with windows. Repair glass that isn’t fitted properly or where putty or seals are damaged, fix windows that don’t seal and replace any worn or missing weather strips. Although these seem like small steps, sustainability websites claim that you can lose up to 15% heat through draughty doors and 10% though unsealed windows. Curtains are better than blinds for keeping out the cold and retaining heat. When there is a bit of warmth and sunlight you can keep them open to warm the house and close them at night to keep the warm air in.
Although insulating your home is a good idea anyway, doing so at a time when the electricity supply is under pressure is doubly beneficial. Not only will you save electricity, which is going to get more expensive, but it’ll be easier to keep warm if there is more load-shedding. Check your doors and windows for draughts. It’s relatively easy to fit self-adhesive rubber seals to the bottom of doors which are letting cold air
Once you’ve finished at ground level move to the ceiling. If you don’t have insulation, consider getting some. It’ll keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s not difficult to fit, but if you have doubts about your DIY abilities, call in the experts. Every house differs, but expert opinion holds that an average house will lose about 25% of heat through the roof. While you’re up there, check if you have a geyser blanket. Heating water requires a lot of energy, up to 40% of household electricity usage, so insulating your geyser will save you money in the long run. Geyser blankets aren’t very expensive, around R300 on average. When you’ve finished insulating the inside of your
house, check the outside. If you live in a winter rainfall area, clear your gutters of leaves and other debris. Water in clogged gutters can break the brackets that support them. The water also needs to go somewhere. If you’re lucky it will pour harmlessly over the side, hopefully not above an entrance. If not, it can blow up under the tiles and damage ceilings and fittings. While you’re up there look for loose, broken or missing tiles or ridge tiles. These can cause leaks or allow wind in, potentially causing more damage. Also check that seals around chimneys or other fittings such as skylights are intact. Take a walk around to see if there are any trees that might blow over or branches that could break and damage the house or installations such as satellite dishes. You may be able to trim them yourself, but if the tree is too big, you don’t have the right equipment or aren’t sure about what you’re doing, it’s best to get in a professional. Bear in mind some indigenous trees are protected, so if you’re not sure ask an expert. While you’re looking around outside, check the lighting. It gets darker earlier in winter, so this is a sensible security precaution. Well-lit paths and approaches will help deter criminals. There’s also the practical benefit that it will prevent you or any of your family or friends tripping and falling in the dark.
