RETIREMENT VILLAGES OR OLD AGE HOMES

Unfortunately, too many people from their late fifties and older, shun the idea of buying into a Retirement Village. They’re either “too young” or “they’re gonna have to take me out of my house feet first” and all too often, this is because of a lack of understanding the difference between an Old Age Home and a Retirement Village. An Old Age Home is a facility that caters to aged people who can no longer live independently – either through illness, or just old age. A Retirement Village, on the other hand, caters to both those who can no longer live independently, and those who are capable of living independently, ie are still actively working, cycling, playing golf, playing tennis, hiking, fishing – and not forgetting braaing. The beauty of this, is that when you reach the stage when you can no longer carry on with these activities for whatever reason, you have various care levels that can be utilised in your cottage if required; or you may choose to move to the Assisted Living apartments, or when the time comes, into Frail Care. So, what is the ideal time to move into a Retirement Village? There is no definitive answer to this question, but some mitigating arguments in favour of moving into a Retirement Village sooner, rather than later, are: • The children have grown up and have moved out. • Rattling around in a huge house with all the maintenance issues and costs. • Increased security demands. • Reduced dependence upon adult children and family for support. • Establish new friendships and avoid loneliness in your later years. (Eleanor Rigby syndrome) A good alternative is Kronendal Retirement Village in Hout Bay: • The Village comprises of 57 free-hold cottages. • 52 well appointed assisted living apartments and

Zoë Brown is the fresh face and unofficial DIY-er greeting early risers on the Feel Good Breakfast Show – Expresso on SABC3 every weekday morning from 06h30 to 09h00. A humanitarian and a go-getter- Zoë is the full package. How long have you been in the industry? I’m in my third year in the TV industry and going onto my 6 th year of radio. I started on campus radio in 2012 and made my commercial debut on Kfm 94.5 in 2014. Have you always envisioned yourself on TV? Not at all. It was only during my student days that the thought crossed my mind. I knew I wanted a career in media, but I never in my wildest dreams would have thought to be a TV and radio presenter. When I see peers from high school, they always comment how surprised they were to hear I landed a gig on TV as I was a relatively quiet child at school. What kick started your career? My degree in International Relations. I studied at the University of Stellenbosch and heard they had a campus radio station. I handed in my CV and was chosen to participate in their training program alongside a few other individuals. It was a gruelling program, but very rewarding and it gave me great insight into the radio world. I fell in love with every aspect, from the on-air broadcasting element to the programming and editing components that come with radio. While doing radio, I was always asked if I would ever consider doing TV and thought I would give it a go after my studies. I did a short course in TV presenting after my honours degree, and while at class one of the guys mentioned that there are auditions for a presenter search competition, so we decided to go as a group and audition – and it was

through that competition that I received my spot on the Expresso Show. What has been your favourite career highlight? I have so many. I met Tim Leatherman, the man that invented the Leatherman (I also received a signed Leatherman). I was privileged to explore Turkey last year and interview the cast from Pitch Perfect 3 in Berlin! Would you describe yourself as a humanitarian? Yes, I would. I am a proud ambassador of the Children’s Hospital Trust for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Sunflower Fund. These are amazing organizations and I feel honoured to be part of their projects and campaigns. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years’ time? I would like to study further and do my masters, while continuing my media career. I also want to travel and explore more over the next 5 years. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not presenting? I love spending time in nature, going for walks and hikes with my friends. Tell us something about yourself viewers wouldn’t know. Even though I work on both TV and radio, I hate having attention drawn on me. I haven’t thrown myself a birthday party since I was 18 years old, and that’s mainly because I hate having the attention on me.

Local motoring entrepreneur, David Thomas, has launched a new platform - FirstCheck - that helps consumers become more empowered when buying or selling their vehicles, by delivering them all the facts up front. An exciting and worthwhile concept we met up with him to find out more… What inspired you to launch First Check? I’m following in my dad’s footsteps. He has been in the motor business for 35 years at Blue Route Autos. I’ve sold all types of wheels myself and after years in the industry, I decided to answer frequently asked questions from customers by launching Firstcheck- which delivers the facts on all vehicles. What is your background? I’ve lived in Hout Bay all my life, from Valley Pre-Primary school, to Kronendal Primary School and finally to Camps Bay High School. According to several university studies, research has shown that men generally find larger eyes on women more attractive. Considering evolutionary development, there may be two reasons for this: Larger eyes (along with fuller lips, bigger breasts and smaller chins) are a sign of higher levels of estrogen. Higher estrogen levels make a woman more likely to conceive, in other words, women with larger eyes are seen as a better “mate”. Human eyes do not grow in size during its development relative to the rest of the body. That is the reason why babies have larger eyes than older children and adults. Large eyes are seen as a sign of youthfulness, also a quality that makes a woman a “better mate” for a man’s offspring. With a little help, small changes around the eye area can have a major impact on attractiveness. Botulinum toxin By treating crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eye) and frown muscles that pull down the brow, one can get a brow lift and soften wrinkles. Lifting the brow opens up the eye. Be careful- too much lifting can give you a “surprised” look. When treating the horizontal forehead lines if you already have low brows or excess skin in the upper eye lid, it can lead to even lower brows and a “heavy feeling” on the forehead. Many youngsters enjoy rugby, especially playing rugby. Tackling in rugby is an art form, that when performed correctly can allow the smallest players on the pitch to stop the largest. Rugby is a physical game and a contact sport. Yes, the players get injured. Just as they do in athletics, gymnastics, horse riding, soccer, and indeed virtually every sport. What can be done is to teach the child the skills necessary to minimise that risk? By teaching children the right way to act in contact situations, will help keep them safe and provide them with the tools to play effective defence in rugby. Focusing on correct positioning becomes pointless if players don’t know what to do when confronted by the ball carrier. Research suggests that concussion is

Children who are taught correct technique from a young age are more likely to retain safe tackle behaviours and it helps children of all sizes feel confident that they can take the ball carrier down, regardless of the ball carrier’s physique. This helps to reduce injury rates, and makes the sport safer at all levels of the game. Correct head placement, using the shoulder, and driving the legs in contact have all been found to be technique factors associated with a reduced risk of a concussive tackle. Tackle with your head up instead of down, away from contact and to the outside and be aware at all times of the position of your head. After you wrap the other player up, drive your body with full force. Keep your momentum up when going in for a tackle and focus on your centre of gravity and balance when you are about to tackle .Get as low as possible. Coaching school children the safety of tackling from a younger age in a low-pressure environment when they are younger and the game is slower is arguably far safer than introducing contact to more physically developed players when they are older, stronger, and heavier and the game is faster and more physical. Tackling puts pressure on the entire body – from the neck and shoulders all the way down the spine

There are times when injuries are a result of poor technique but inadequate prematch preparation, poor classroom study posture and stiffness of the back, neck, shoulders, hips and legs as well as inefficient body biomechanics can predispose your child to injury.
