Welcome to the New Year readers. It’s back to full swing and back to the grind stone. That’s assuming you were able to have a bit of a break. January can often be a tricky time of year. The festivities of December can leave us all feeling a little shattered instead of rejuvenated. Having said that it IS a good time to set goals and plan for how you want your year to look. We all know the best plans can go awry but we still need to make them right? Our cover star Chris van Zyl is certainly a big fan of setting and achieving his goals and hopefully will inspire us all to do the same. Our relationship expert has provided some good insights into getting our personal relationships into their best space - which has a knock on effect on everything really. We’ve included a nifty back to school calendar so at least you can plan your holidays around it, for those of us with kiddies. Award-winning ice-skating troupe, Imperial Ice Stars bring their third stage musical production, Cinderella on Ice, to Cape Town. Chris Van Zyl: Loves leading a Team!

January is always a time of deep reflection and setting goals for the year. Captain of the Western Province Rugby team, Chris van Zyl, is incredibly goal orientated and was thus the perfect inspiration for our January cover. Was playing professional rugby always part of the plan? I had not specifically had this dream at a young age. But as I had grown into the sport, I realized that I could do this as a profession. It then very quickly became a dream to play professional rugby and to be the best that I can be. Specific goal setting has always been part of my life. Rugby goals became more and more pertinent. What has been your biggest career highlight? To date it must have been lifting the Currie Cup as captain of the 2017 Western Province team. How do you handle the pressure of being captain? I have always loved the responsibility that comes with leading a team. I thrive under these circumstances and enjoy the pressure that comes with it. I’m always conscious that I have been chosen to lead the team for a reason and to trust my decisions on and off the field. What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned playing rugby? Self-discipline has always been a characteristic that I have strived for. But being in a professional sport environment I feel that I have learnt even more about its importance when pursuing your goals.
When you’re not playing rugby, what’s your favourite thing to do? I enjoy playing the odd game of golf and spending time with family and friends. Tell us something about yourself no one else may know. My full name is Christopher Machiel and yet most people that know me, call me by my nickname Pickle. I wish there was an exciting story behind the nickname. But unfortunately, it was just a case of not being able to pronounce the word correctly. Do you have any advice for aspiring professional athletes? Most importantly set goals on a regular basis, work hard and stay focused. Whatever sacrifice you make will be worth it in the end if it is something you truly desire. Do you think it’s important for players to prepare for life after Rugby? I believe that all professional athletes need to prepare for life after sport while still playing professionally. My feeling is that it is often too late to prepare for life after professional sport, post one’s career. What’s top of your New Year’s Resolutions list? To win a Super Rugby Title with the Stormers. To win a consecutive Currie Cup Title with Western Province. To build Walworth Consulting to a new level and continue to grow the business.

MAY 2018 BE THE YEAR OF POSTIIVE CHANGE
Although most of us are familiar with Ghandi’s words: ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world’, what many fail to grasp is the simplicity of applying Ghandi’s words in a practical and constructive sense in our own lives.
If we truly wish for change and genuinely seek to attain the goals set for the year ahead, it is imperative that we believe in our abilities, are able to visualise and ‘see’ our success and manage our thoughts accordingly. As obtuse as it may appear, it is our thoughts that ultimately drive outcomes. If our thoughts are not aligned with how we see and what we want in the future it is probable that it will not unfold in the manner in which we had hoped. The best goal setting and planning in the world, with the best coach in the world, will come to nought if our thoughts are in contradiction with what we seek. What we think is a critical ingredient in making our lives the success we desire.
When life is not unfolding quite the way we would prefer, it is helpful to try to observe what we are thinking, as our thoughts lie at the root of our actions. Our actions in turn will either lead us closer to our desired outcome or leave us in the same place. At times they could even take us further away from our goals. When considering the year ahead and striving for the goals set, remember that we are entirely in control of our thoughts and how we view the world.
respond to and manage these setbacks and how we adapt to the circumstances. The ability to change our thoughts, responses, actions and outcomes is entirely ours for the taking. All we have to do is ‘be’ the change we want to see.

“VOETSTOOTS” CLAUSE DOES NOT REMOVE ONUS ON OWNER TO DISCLOSE DEFECTS The “voetstoots” clause, meaning “with a shove of the foot” (that the buyer takes the property in its present condition as it is), has often been used by sellers as a disclaimer to protect themselves against any claims from the buyer if a fault is found after signing the offer to purchase. This term, however, is not to be abused as known defects by law need to be disclosed to all parties involved, says Rene Barry-Kleynhans, a partner at law firm Henkes Nolte-Joubert.
Whether patent or latent, if the seller knows about them, he cannot use the voetstoots clause to protect himself against repairing them or disclosing them to the buyer, and it is always recommended that buyers ask for a full condition report (as is prescribed by the Estate Agency Affairs Board) listing the condition of certain key items on the property in question.

Sellers should be aware that a buyer can cancel the deal with no repercussions if it is found that the property had a defect that was known at the time of the sale and not disclosed. If the seller conceals something he knows about with the aim of achieving a better price, the buyer is within his rights to cancel or sue him for damages from the resulting deception.
If a full condition report is not available, the buyer could request that an inspection be carried out. While this would be at his expense, it would be worthwhile if there any questions that cannot be answered fully by the seller or his agent, says Barry-Kleynhans.
When a buyer signs an offer to purchase he acts in good faith that the seller will not deceive him and vice versa, it is with a mutual respect of honesty that a transaction should be entered into, says Barry-Kleynhans.

CRUNCHES ARE BAD FOR YOUR BACK By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“Any repetitive exercise, with or without load, where the lumbar spine is allowed to flex, round, or flatten, will over-stress the discs and ligaments.” Stuart McGill, a professor of spine bio-mechanics at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
Crunches and sit-ups involve lying on your back and repeatedly bending and extending your spine. Any forward bending motion of the torso such as sit-ups, crunches, rope pull-down crunches, toes to bar, knee to elbows, roll downs or touch our toes causes a significant increase in lower back intradiscal pressure. No matter how strong your core is, if repetitive bending (lumbar flexion) is done enough times then the posterior lower back disc fibers become overstretched, strained, weaken and gradually tear which can result in chronic low back pain, or even disc prolapses. Don’t think because it doesn’t hurt yet it is O.K. to do crunches. Each of your spinal discs is only able to support a limited number of bending motions over the course of your lifetime. Does it make
sense to perform exercises that can create common back injuries? The fact is, our abdominal muscles are not designed for large length change, or to help us flex our torso hundreds if not thousands of times. When doing any movement athletic or otherwise, the muscles of the spine, are designed to create spinal stability and help maintain a natural lordosis concave arch in the lumbar spine in order to protect it. The abdominal muscles in no way can raise the legs. The abdominal muscles purely stabilize the torso while the iliopsoas and rectus femoris raise the legs. The best way to train work your torso is to do movements that challenge the muscles to perform the way they’re designed and expected to work in real life, and not to train muscles in isolation. Crunches don’t replicate any natural movement our bodies were designed for. Our bodies thrive on exercises in alignment with their function as nature intended. Crunches actively oppose the purpose of the spine and work against it. Over trained upper abdominals shorten and pull the upper body forward creating a slightly stooped posture that increases loading of the lower back. The muscles forming the trunk and pelvis must be balanced and when under load be simultaneously activated to allow the spine to retain it natural curves and protect
the spine from unnecessary wear and tear. If you concentrate on strengthening only one set of muscles within the core, you can destabilize your spine by pulling it out of alignment. Functionally, the hips and shoulders are designed to create power and movement and move as one powerful unit. Osteopaths are trained to understand the anatomy and biomechanics of the spine, which includes injury mechanisms of the spine which is important for injury avoidance and improved performance. If you have back pain, you want exercises that stabilize the spine, not move it. Osteopathic management, diagnosis and treatment help to restore proper motion and biomechanics to the spine, easing pain and dysfunction in the spine. Knowing and addressing your biomechanics will insure that you can begin or continue exercising without being injured. How many people start exercising, get injured, and then stop? In a study conducted in 2001 by McGill on disc herniation and its relationship to repetitive spinal flexion, he found that the damaging mechanism leading to a herniation requires repeated flexion with only very modest loading on the spine. This trauma accumulates over time with very little indication to the individual, and weakens the discs.

After the holidays, many of us have found that our favourite dresses have suddenly shrunk! They are either uncomfortably tight or we are unable to do up the zip. Not exactly how we would like to start the New Year, but there we are. Succumbing to temptation and overindulging slightly, and now we are stuck with extra kilogrammes and a guilty conscience. WHAT ARE CECCARELLI FAT LOSS INJECTIONS/LIPOLYSIS? Lipolysis is an innovative, gentle and nonsurgical method which helps reduce the accumulation of stubborn fat deposits in targeted regions of the body. Ceccarelli may be an extremely effective method of helping to combat cellulite and enhance the effects of dieting and exercise. Ceccarelli may help reduce fat safely around the waist, inner thigh, abdomen, under the upper arms, knees, ankles, face and double chin. Results on any treatment may vary per individual as everybody is different and may respond differently to treatments mentioned. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK? Lipolysis for fat reduction and cellulite treatment uses a mixture of fat-dissolving combination of Vitamin C, iron and lignocaine, injected to the localised regions of the body. The treatment is performed by a specially trained professional and involves virtually painless micro-injections into the targeted fat layer beneath the skin. The Vitiamin C is employed as a pro-oxidant; ascorbic acid acts as a reducing agent when mixed with iron, and the Fenton’s metabolism is initiated. A mixture rich in hydroxyl type radicals is generated. During application, these radicals may lead to cracking of the membranes of fat cells in the treated zone and to outpouring of their content into the surrounding tissue. From there, in a natural way, via the bloodstream, the fat is transported to the liver and metabolised. Transportation takes place via the lymphatic system, therefore the need to drink a lot of water. It is necessary to emphasise that this procedure is not an alternative to a healthy diet or exercise, but helps to target areas not easily affected by regular exercise and dieting. The Ceccarelli protocol employs a physiological process naturally occurring in the body, resulting in minimal post procedural swelling and inflammation or tenderness. One to Three treatments are necessary to achieve patient results required,
which are visible in a few days, with further improvement thereafter. HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE WORK? The solution is injected into localised fatty deposits in a grid like pattern. Injections of about 1ml per site, at about 1cm apart. In a single session the maximum to be injected is 200ml. No area on the body larger than two hands should be treated in a single session. This treatment works exceptionally well when combined with our laser skin tightening and fat sculpting!
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? The number of sessions required depends on the amount of resistant fat the needs to be dissolved. In most cases, one treatment is sufficient, but for a moderate amount of fat usually 2 to 3 treatments are needed. Results are generalized and may vary per individual. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? The side effects may include slight bruising and mild swelling after treatment but these usually subside after a maximum of 2 days. WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE? As a couple’s therapist, the advent of a new year is an opportunity to share with couples a ‘start as you mean to go on’ approach to their relationships, coaching them to take charge of the renewal and reinvigoration of their relationships. A New Year check in and reflection of the past year allows you to identify your high moments, the romantic times, the travel and friendships shared, the joint and individual successes achieved. Secondly, it gives you the space to revisit tough conversations and make resolutions for the coming year together. I sometimes ask my clients to describe what they like about each other. They are often surprised by how sentimental they get in undertaking this thought process. It’s as if they haven’t heard these complimentary things from their partner since they first started dating. In some cases, they haven’t, or they hear good things about themselves via third parties, ie: “John was saying how wonderfully

It doesn’t matter whether these goals are to be achieved together or as individuals. Make a plan for how these dreams can become a reality and how you will support each other in order to achieve the desired outcomes.
