Our local sporting heroes have truly done us proud of late. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate last month’s cover star Ryan Sandes for winning the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in California as well as Wayde Van Niekerk who has managed to smash a 17 year old world record in the 300m sprint. This month we caught up with Robbie Fleck, a devoted dad of two and head coach of the Stormers rugby team, a challenging job which he handles with aplomb. His passion for the sport is infectious and we look forward to sharing some of his insights with you. The success of these accomplished athletes and Robbie’s inspiring career, motivated me to share this quote by legendary baseball player Babe Ruth who said: ‘It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.’ Touché. If you’ve got something to share that you are really proud of, we’d love to hear from you. Until then, keep warm and here’s hoping for a wet winter.

ROBBIE FLECK: Passionate about Rugby

By Danni Thunell Ende

Let me tell you, you don’t even have to be a big rugby fan to get inspired when you hear Robbie Fleck talk about the game. His passion for the sport is enormous and his role as head coach of the Stormers is a challenge he undertakes with aplomb. We caught up with him, despite his busy schedule, to find out more. people are enjoying the way we play the game. But ultimately people want results and they want trophy’s… I feel positive that we have a good opportunity to end the season well. I don’t want to say that we will win the trophy but I think that we are going to surprise a few people along the way- which is exciting! What is your most memorable rugby moment? There are so many. The comraderie is most memorable. The stories and the relationships that you build…I guess the ultimate thing that stands out was making the Springbok team and partaking in the 1999 world cup. My kids still talk about it to this day. Any advice for aspiring professional rugby players? It’s got to be your passion. It’s hard work. But once you’ve got the gist of it, it becomes easier.

Did you ever see yourself going into a coaching role? Not really. Towards the latter part of my career (playing a senior role as a Springbok) I was injured early. I finished my career as a player at 29 and came back to SA. I started coaching on a part time basis at UCT. I had played the game for so long and wasn’t ready to give up on it. I started achieving some success underneath John Dobson. One day I got call from (then director of Rugby) Rassie Erasmus- which was a big surprise. When the opportunity came, I couldn’t turn it down. Is being head coach harder than you expected? Certainly. The higher you get the harder it becomes. I was an assistant coach for 8 years. The jump to head coach was quite significant. I look after 16 management members and 40 players. It’s a full-time job. Then added to that is the expectations of the public and media. How do you cope with the media pressure? I’ve dealt with the media since the age of 20. Being in the spotlight is something I’ve grown up with. Are your kids into rugby? They are! They’re fortunate enough to come to Newlands with me and spend time with the players, who’re great with them. They’re passionate about rugby but

then again, they’re passionate about a lot of things at their age. We get to take their friends to Newlands too which is cool for them. Do they have a favourite player? It changes. It used to be Joe Petersen, now its Sia Kolisi. How do you fit in family time with travelling so much? It’s a challenge. It’s not so much the travelling as the work schedule. Your weekends aren’t your own. Whether your team is playing or training; you can’t just pick up with the family and go away. You work on Saturdays and Sundays when your kids are off. I’m fortunate enough that my wife has been part of it from the age of 20. How would you spend a rare day off with the family? It doesn’t always go my way! It’s usually what the kids want. My perfect day would be chilling out and going to the beach in Kommetjie. What can fans expect from the remaining season? It’s been a challenging year for us as a new group of players…We’re looking forward to a quarter final at home. There was a lot of pressure to play an exciting brand of rugby that the fans and the people of Cape Town could enjoy. From our perspective, I think we’ve brought a lot of excitement back to Newlands and

What qualities make for a great rugby player? Work ethic, humility and a bit of self-belief. In coaching you select on character and not on talent. You’re selecting people. You want to know that you can trust the guy next to you. I believe Bishops had a great rugby culture in your school days. They really stood out for something different for SA rugby. There were so many legendary coaches- Basil Bay was one of them. It was all about people. It was running rugby and about the ball and building relationships. It was not just about winning…It sounds romantic but that’s where my passion for rugby grew. Do you think you’ve managed to bring that ethos into your coaching of the Stormers? I do. It’s certainly something that I try drill into the guys. Ownership. Being humble. Having empathy for each other. Realising it’s a team sport. There are a lot of things that I learnt at school that I try to bring across. What is your management style? More relaxed and jovial but there is a serious side when needed…Modern day leadership is all about being humble and open and everyone working together. At the end of the day in my job, the players are the ones who ultimately make decisions on the field and decide if we win or lose.

WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE IN YOUR WILL… OR SHOULD BE… By Caroline Wansbury

Nobody likes talking about their Will or even giving much thought to it as it raises the inevitable. However the key is to think of your Will, not as a necessary evil, but rather as a gift both to yourself as a testimony to your life’s work as well as a gift to your family and beneficiaries. The good news is that the State does not inherit an estate if a person dies without a Will, however it does mean that such an Estate is divided up in accordance with a set of rules – the laws of Intestate succession, with little room for taking into consideration the particular circumstances of each family. A

potentially unfair set of circumstances can arrive if the deceased had a life term partner (often referred to as a common law spouse although not recognized as such) as they will not automatically inherit any part of the Estate. So too if a Will is not regularly updated to accommodate changing circumstances unfortunate situations can arise. If the deceased had not updated his or her Will within three months of a divorce, his or her former spouse can still inherit in terms of the older Will, even if the deceased is remarried. Each and every person’s Will should be unique and

tailored to his or her specific needs and requirements. A Will is not a generic document printed off the internet or bought at a stationery store but rather, a highly personalized document. Think carefully about who should be Executor of your Estate, guardians of your children and what bequests you wish to leave as your final written testament. For further advice on this and assistance with drafting your personalised Will, please speak to us for a private consultation in your area.

WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY - UPVC IS A WINNER In summer we welcome a breeze through our homes, even encourage it by opening windows and doors. In winter, that breeze turns into an unwelcome draught! With winter fast approaching, make sure your home is draught free by installing #REHAU’s uPVC windows and doors, guaranteed to make your home feel more comfortable while reducing your electricity bill! #UPVCWindowBenefits #EnergyEfficientWindows The thermal efficiency of windows is measured using a ‘U’ value. The lower the ‘U’ value, the less heat is permitted to pass through the window and the more efficient the window is. When it comes to ‘U’ values - lowest is best! An average home will lose 30% of its heating or cooling energy through its windows and doors. A glance at the table to the right shows our top performing New Look Collection window

would reduce those loses by 75% compared to a standard aluminum window! That’s a 22.5% reduction in your heating and cooling costs. With carbon emissions high on the global agenda and the ever increasing cost of electricity, we are all looking for ways to make our homes more energy efficient. Windows from the New Look Collection would be a big step in the right direction.

THE PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF HEARTBREAK By Janet Winterbourne

“So it’s true, when all is said and done, grief is the price we pay for love,” wrote E. A. Bucchianeri. If we knew what we were letting ourselves in for would we still do it? Probably yes, that’s the human condition… Most of us have known the steep price that is paid when it comes to matters of the heart. The death of a partner or a truly sad or hurtful break-up can cause depression, fatigue, low self-image and can profoundly affect our ability to trust again and go forth into the world of relationships. If we aren’t careful a single blow to the heart can leave it permanently broken. As if the searing pain of loss were not enough to deal with we also have the potential for physical damage, this can come in the form of sleeplessness and insomnia. Often in the midnight hours one will lay awake ruminating over your lost love, your body and mind is exhausted, you become less able to focus and your spirit just won’t rest. At this point you may become vulnerable to depression. Appetite changes will often rock your body at this emotional time, whether it be compulsive over eating or a lack of appetite, for some this can lead to more serious issues such as ulcers, during periods of deep emotional turmoil our gut often absorbs much of the impact and can lead to cramps and nausea. This is especially prevalent in people who internalize their sadness and who do not talk through their loss.

Severe stress caused by heartbreak has been shown to compromise our immune systems, if the heart is vulnerable so the body becomes weak and slows down leaving you susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. It can also be hard to stay focused and it’s not uncommon to feel like your brain is walking through quicksand. At this time it’s important to try to get enough sleep and stick to a healthy diet- as the heart heals the body will follow suit. One of the biggest side effects of heart break I see in my office when people come to work through their loss is a variety of permutations of headaches. This can be anything from migraines to tension headaches that can also affect the neck and back. This may be a result of insomnia and general fatigue. The racing and distracted mind eventually finds its outlet

through creating headaches and associated pain. Heartbreak is so called for a reason, when one is so emotionally hurt, it will often cause the person to clutch their chest, they may experience palpitations, shortness of breath and at times hyper ventilation. Some will even feel as if they were having a heart attack. Following a severe heartbreak, we often don’t return to how we were before. Fortunately with the sharing of pain with a friend or in therapy, we can heal and the sidewinder that came in and took you out can help you to eventually become wiser and a better, stronger and more empathetic person for the experience.

PEEL AND REVEAL…

A little pain, a lot to gain with medium depth skin peels The first chemical peels date back to the 19th century when an Austrian dermatologist used a chemical substance to resurface and restore the skin. With a chemical solution one can cause a controlled injury to the skin and the wound healing processes following this, result in new, healthy, regenerated skin. As long as the process is controlled, the deeper the peel the better the results. That means smoother, less pigmented, younger looking skin. Peels vary from superficial with no downtime, to deep peels which are performed under sedation or general anaesthetic and leave you indoors with a lot of discomfort for days to weeks.

BEFORE

skin type. Unlike the old peels you do not need to prepare your skin with special products for months in advance. But the cherry on top is the fact that the burning sensation from the peel is a lot less than previously. That is due to a mask that is applied after the TCA solution- this acts as a buffer for all the oxidants released from the injured skin. Peels are done 1-2 weekly for about four weeks and can be done on the face, hands, décolletage or even the back or legs.

My favourite peel is the EASY TCA medium depth peel that can be done in your doctor’s rooms, allow you to go back to work the next day and gives amazing results. Compared to traditional TCA (trichloracetic) peels it is a lot less destructive and more stimulating to the skin. The risk of scarring or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (worsening of dark spots due to inflammation) is a lot less and the peel can be done on any

PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME (runner’s knee)

By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

“Good osteopathy is not only receiving treatment. An osteopath will also give you good advice on avoiding the condition for which you are being treated and can often detect the signs of impending trouble. Good coaches and athletes should have the arrows of osteopathy in their quiver of medical backup - it can lessen the need for far more drastic treatment later.” - Lord Sebastian Coe, CH KBE - Double Olympic Gold Medallist - The Mechanics of Sports Injuries.

technique) on the patellofemoral joint. This can result in thinning and softening of the articular cartilage under the patella and/or on the femur that connects to the patella. This can be further aggravated if you have poor hip stability. If your glutes, adductors and hamstrings are weak, unbalanced or inhibited it will predispose your knees to poor biomechanics when you run which may result in knee pain. In severe or prolonged cases, swelling may be noticeable around the patella, and the sufferer may complain that he or she feels as though the knee is going to give way. It can affect people of all ages but tend to be more common as we get older. Other causes of patellofemoral pain include osteoarthritis of the knee, internal knee derangement and fractures.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)- runner’s knee is a dull ache to severe pain in the front of the knee, ‘inside’ the knee and sometimes at the back of the knee. Sometimes when the cartilage on the kneecap is not aligned properly or worn you can hear grating and cracking (crepitus) when bending the knee.

Running (especially downhill), jumping, wall sits, inappropriate squats/dead lifts techniques, one legged squats, lunging, cycling or walking down stairs tends to make the pain worse, as does sitting for a long period of time with the knee in a flexed position - at work or home. A sudden increase in training, or performing high intensity jumping and knee bending are common causes of patellofemoral pain.

Patellofemoral pain is often a consequence of muscle imbalance and poor biomechanics in the legs and around the knee, which causes the kneecap (patella) to not move smoothly or sufficiently and move out of place as you bend and straighten the knee, causing abnormal stresses upon the tendons cartilage and ligaments. The cause of pain and dysfunction often results from either abnormal forces or prolonged repetitive compressive or shearing forces (such as during running, jumping or inappropriate squatting

Osteopaths are trained to diagnose the causes of specific structural problems. For example, there may be a muscle imbalance in the foot which is leading

to poor control of the knee. Or it may be an issue concerning the hip. Get your knee checked out by an osteopath. Identifying the cause is an important part of treatment. One of the problems osteopaths see with Patellofemoral pain/Runner’s Knee is that people tend to ignore the problem and exercise through the pain and continue training. Osteopaths will assess any functional, structural, congenital variations and identify areas of muscle weakness, tightness and imbalance, which need to be corrected to maximise long-term improvement and prevent reoccurrence. This will include your spine and pelvis and lower limb and feet. Osteopaths will advise you correct biomechanics/ movement and help you with exercise technique and advise you on orthotics if appropriate. In the vast majority of cases this condition is treatable. This condition could be classified as early wear and tear and could be a precursor to osteoarthritis if left untreated.

TRELLIDOR TURNS 40!

By: Lindy Barry

Trellidor being a pioneer in the industry, has become the blanket name for any retractable security gate. The company was started in 1976 as a powder coating company, but it wasn’t called Trellidor then. It changed to Trellidor in the 1980’s when they started to manufacture a new trellis-style security gate. The design had come from a Durban tool maker that had used old style lift cages as inspiration. In 1996 there were 4 Trellidor branches and 15 distributors. In 2017, there are over 70 RSA franchises and 15 worldwide. To accommodate the need of security while maintaining the desired aesthetics of the home, an additional 7 products have been added. The changes have been more technical than cosmetic for our bestselling retractable security gate. Strengthening features have been added as new technology and materials have emerged. As crime levels have

risen, along with increasingly sophisticated criminal break-in methods, we now have 5 different models in the Trellidor retractable range, each with an increasing level of strength. Customer demand has always played a role in our product development. Although powder coating hasn’t been the company’s core business since the early 1980’s, we’re still proud of our powder coating process. In 2008 we installed a state of the art powder coating plant that gives our products the edge in terms of anti-corrosion properties. With such changes in the past 40 years, we wonder what the next 40 will hold.
