Present Laughter Until 10 March

Pieter Toerien celebrates 30 years of worldclass entertainment with Noel Coward’s timeless comedy, Present Laughter. The plot follows a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis (since he has recently turned forty). It’s Theatre On The Bay, Camps Bay at the following times: 8pm | Sat again at 5pm. Tickets cost from R120 – R220 at www.computicket.com

West Side Story 7 March- 1 April

The award-winning creative team behind the Fugard Theatre’s productions of The Rocky Horror Show and Cabaret bring the multiple award-winning musical back to Cape Town. West Side Story is set on the harsh streets of the Upper West Side neighbourhood of New York City in the mid-1950s and is inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragic, ageless tale of Romeo and Juliet. Rival gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, battle in a turf-war to gain control of the neighbourhood. It gets complicated and tensions rise when Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo who is the leader of the Sharks. It’s taking place at the Artscape Theatre. Tickets from R150 – R470 at www.computicket.com

Jeremy Loops at Kirstenbosch 18 March

Capetonian singer-songwriter, Loops juxtaposes booming city rhythms with lilting folk to perfectly capture the duality of his South African life. The extremes aren’t new to the singer, who by day travels to the furthest corners of Africa to battle deforestation through his organisation, Greenpop, and by night resumes as raconteur for raucous fans around the world. It starts at 5.30pm and tickets cost from R140 – R205 at www.webtickets.co.za

The Reforest Fest Family Weekend 16-18 March

The aim is to bring children and adults back to nature to (re)connect, plant trees, learn and dance under the stars. Guests arrive the Friday evening, pitch their tent and relax into a night of gentle tunes. Early Saturday morning sees an action-packed day of tree-planting and hands getting dirty, where guests help to restore an ecosystem that is one of the rarest and most endangered in the Western Cape. After planting thousands of trees in teams, they return to camp for a shower, a talent show and forest party for the family to celebrate their achievement. Sunday sees guests relaxing their bodies and stimulating their mind with fun, educational activities and workshops including guided forest walks, yoga, informative talks, arts and crafts and puppet shows. Meals, tents and ablution facilities are available on site. It’s taking place at the Platbos Forest (between Stanford and Gansbaai) from Friday 3pm to Sunday 3pm. Michelle Sky Haywood: Living her dream

By Danni Thunell Ende

She’s a South African champion kitesurfer who loves travelling and writing. She’s evidently passionate about the sport and recently took the leap of faith to pursue it full time. As someone who’s truly living their dream life, she’s an inspiration to us all. How did you get into kitesurfing? I have always enjoyed spending time in the sea surfing with my dad, even though I was not very good. When I was 17 we started kitesurfing together, after seeing kitesurfers at our local beach in the Eastern Cape. It took us a while to get started, but it was all worth it. It became a huge passion for both of us and we now kitesurf almost every day! What’s been your proudest moment? My proudest moment has been a series of moments which led up to being crowned South African Champion. In 2016 I made a tough decision to close my Pilates studio to pursue my passions. It was a difficult step filled with uncertainty and little support. But now I am so proud of myself for taking that leap of faith because I am now living my dream. How do you stay in such great shape? Besides Kitesurfing, I like to go to the gym and do a variety of workouts and classes. I also eat very healthily which makes all the difference. What do you love most about the sport? The thing I love most is that after years of doing this sport, I still regularly have moments where I am overwhelmed by how incredible it is. I never get sick of it! What inspires you to be the best you can be? I am often reminded that life on earth is short and that it is a blessing to be alive. Not everyone gets to live out their days and this inspires

6

me to make the most of life. It keeps me determined to work hard, be healthy and live a good life that will inspire others. What’s your favourite way to spend the day when there’s no wind? I still love going to the beach even when there is no wind. My ideal no-wind day consists of doing something active in the water like surfing, wakeboarding or Stand Up Paddle boarding. Followed by going out for dinner with my husband. Where’s the most exotic place the sport has taken you to? Aruba, a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean where the wind blows every day! I have also kitesurfed on Lake Malawi close to Hippos and Crocodiles which was an exhilarating experience and a surprisingly exotic location! What does 2018 have in store for you? I am so excited to see what this year will bring. I will spend my summer in Cape Town but in winter I will travel as much as possible to kitesurfing locations overseas. This past year I somewhat fell into the position of a social media influencer combining my modelling, kitesurfing and writing talents. I am looking forward to exploring that more by helping brands and hotels all around the world reach a wider audience through my social media channels and blog. In summary, 2018 will have me doing something I have always wanted - to love my job!

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FINANCES BY ENSURING THE CORRECT MARRIAGE CONTRACT

at the date of dissolution of marriage by death or divorce. The value of the difference in the accrual of the two estates is then divided equally.

IS IN PLACE BEFORE TYING THE KNOT

When getting married in South Africa, one would automatically be married in community of property if no antenuptial (ante – before; nuptial – marriage) contract has been drafted and executed prior to the marriage date. This has many drawbacks, as community of property marriages can leave one’s spouse (or self) financially vulnerable, says Rene Barry, partner at Henkes Nolte-Joubert. The two main types of marriages are in community of property or out of community of property with an antenuptial – with or without accrual – which will be fully explained below. Community of property (COP) The estates of the spouses become one – therefore, the debts as well as assets become the shared responsibility (50/50) of both parties in the marriage and not just the person whose name is listed as the debtor or owner. In the unfortunate event of one of the spouses being declared insolvent, the joint estate could be lost if there is a court order granted against it. When married in community of property, both spouses would have to sign documents where there are large asset purchases, such as a home or motor vehicle, or where there are transactions which could affect the spouse, such as signing surety for someone else. Changing later from COP to having an antenuptial

contract is possible, this has to be done via an application to the High Court. The court will factor in whether any other person is negatively affected by the change in marriage contract, such as creditors who might have a claim against the estate of one or both spouses. Antenuptial contract (ANC) without accrual This type of marriage contract is where assets gained before or during the marriage are kept separate. Whatever each party brought with them into the marriage remains theirs and profits or gains are not shared, neither are debts. The parties are independent of each other financially, therefore “safer” in terms of protecting their own financial future. Antenuptial contract (ANC) with accrual Each spouse will keep full control of his and her own property and wealth (as well as debt) but any assets or profit accumulated during the marriage is shared on death or divorce. The accrual is determined by calculating the difference in the net starting value and the net final value of the estate of each spouse ATTORNEYS . CONVEYANCERS . NOTARIES

Whether an ANC with or without accrual is chosen as the marriage contract, a Notary, not linked or related to either partner should be called on to execute the contract prior to the date of marriage. This contract should be registered at the Deeds Office within three months of the contract being executed before the Notary. It should be noted, however, that if it is not registered, it will have no effect on third parties but is still fully valid inter partes (i.e. the spouses). Drawing up a contract should be done with a practical approach, and should not be an emotional issue. It is similar to business planning in that one wouldn’t enter into a partnership with another without stating clearly what the terms of the contract are. Couples can choose what they will put into their contract, and it is always best to allow for enough time before the wedding is to take place to meet with a Notary Public, draw up the necessary documentation and sign it. A contract as important as this should not be rushed – and is as important to the future of each spouse as is the taking of wedding vows, says Barry. Confidence in Real Estate is Rising By Romy Tarboton

The appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa as the new president of the Republic of South Africa has created a whirlwind of politics which has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the Rand, which is nearing its best performance levels in five years. With a business savvy and investor-friendly president at the helm of our country we should anticipate improvements in the property market as demand begins to increase. Prolific real estate websites are reporting a large surge of traffic when compared to the same period last year indicating that buyers are re-engaging with property listings online. Our real estate market has often been described as ‘confidence driven’ and having listened to the inspiring State of the Nation Address which Ramaphosa so eloquently delivered, I for one have been feeling notably optimistic. As Agents, running with buyers every day, we can feel the impact that this positivity is having on the property market and are energized by this increased activity.

We believe that the following are pertinent factors driving real estate prices in Cape Town specifically; 1) Cape Town’s coastline and mountains act as a major constraint on the city’s ability to expand, which goes some way towards explaining the outperformance of the Cape housing market. 2) The region’s unique lifestyle offering see’s large volumes of in-migration of homeowners from other provinces attracted to a high quality lifestyle and superior infrastructure offered by the City of Cape Town, and 3) Despite the volatility of the Rand, Cape Town is still seen as a relatively inexpensive place to invest and live when compared to similarly appealing other global destinations. Cape Town really shows itself it all its glory in the month of March, which is renowned as a great time to visit, it’s a fabulous month to showcase your home! BUSTING THE MYTHS AND UNDERSTANDING THE FACTS ABOUT COLLAGEN When it comes to skin we have all heard the ‘It Word‘ -collagen- being used at some point, but what is it? Why is it so important and how to we build up our supply? Is collagen the answer to our skins fountain of youth? I decided to take away all the jargon and in understandable terms explain the science of collagen to you. Here are some truths about how collagen works and what it can do for you.

WHAT IS COLLAGEN? Collagen is an important building block for the skin. It makes up to 30% of the protein in our body and 70% of the protein within our skin. Collagen helps our skin stay toned and supple. The dermis, which provides the foundation for the skin, is closely involved in the skin’s elasticity and flexibility, and the main source of collagen in the skin. Getting an adequate amount of collagen helps to ensure our skin looks glowing. What causes collagen to deplete or break down? In our skin we have an abundance of cells called Fibroblast cells. Fibroblasts cells are directly responsible for the production of collagen. As we age this production slows down so. For example if one fibroblast cell can produce collagen let’s say 50-100 times in its life span, as we age these cells get lazy and go to sleep and this cell may then have only produced collagen 20 times and so has not reached its full potential. The dermis becomes thinner, showing a marked loss of collagen and other fibres. Changes in the dermis are in large measure responsible for the loss of elasticity and wrinkling that is the hallmark of aging skin. In addition, wound healing slows with age. Aging is particularly sensitive to environmental influence in the skin. Skin exposed to the sun (ultraviolet light) ages much more rapidly than sun-protected skin.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO REGENERATE COLLAGEN SUPPLY AND WHAT DOES IT DO? Age-dependent changes in fibroblast physiology may also contribute to the increased incidence of cancer that is a hallmark of human aging. Several lines of evidence suggest mutations and loss of normal tissue structure synergize to generate the exponential rise in cancer that occurs with age.

HOW DO AESTHETIC TREATMENTS BUILD COLLAGEN? Most aesthetic treatments from mild skin peels, to laser treatments and skin needling treatments at some level work on the bodies wound healing response. They place the fibroblast cells under attack by causing a micro injury (in a controlled manner, please don’t try this at home.) When this happens the fibroblast cells need to protect themselves and can only do so by waking up and creating more collagen, therefore unlocking their full potential. What treatments do my patients find most effective and why do we choose them over other treatments?

SKIN NEEDLING There are many forms of skin needling but I definitely have 2 firm favourites. The Dermastamp- when I’m looking for a lower inflammatory response and the Eclipse Micropen Elite- when I’m looking for a treatment that will be a little more intense. To understand needling I usually explain it like this: You get 2 types of healing in the skin: Healing by primary intention- I take all the skin off the back of my hand and its red, raw a and painful. I then heal by producing new cells (collagen) from underneath. This is a slow process with lots of down time, that can be compared with Fractional ablative lasers. Healing by secondary intention- I cut the back of my hand and heal from the sides and underneath. This can be compared with skin needling. This way I have less downtime, can go deeper and get a double hit of collagen supply and a fraction of the down time.

Skin needling treatments are extremely popular and when done correctly can effectively treat advanced ageing, acne scarring and even reduce pore size.

LASER SKIN TIGHTENING The treatment uses a safe infrared light that heats the skin and the tissue immediately under the skin’s surface. The heat produced during the treatment stimulates the infiltration of fibroblast and the formation of new collagen, while also tightening the existing bundles of collagen and elastin in the skin. This “double” stimulation both thickens and tightens the skin, strengthening the natural “scaffold” that gives our skin structure. This treatment really shines when tightening body areas and the jowls and neck.

IPL Photo Rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that provides an effective way to correct and treat skin damage without disruption of the skin’s surface, producing younger and healthier looking skin on the face, neck, chest and hands. This treatment is best when wanting to also even out the colour of the skin as it treats sun damage and broken capillaries too.

LED LIGHT THERAPY LED sends light rays into the Fibroblast cells, which in turn excite the Mitochondria into producing in some cases up to 10 times more ATP (fuel for cells), but usually from 2 to 4 times. This fuels the cell’s activities, which causes more of the needed Collagen and Elastin to be produced, as well as other needed materials for the skin. The Collagen plumps up the skin to fill in fine lines and wrinkles while the Elastin helps to firm skin that has began to sag. This whole LED Light Therapy process results in skin that appears more youthful, smoother, healthier and more radiant!

DO COLLAGEN CREAMS BUILD COLLAGEN? Collagen creams have been around for decades. At first glance, they seem useful. After all, the skin is made of collagen- so if you put on a cream with collagen, the skin should absorb it and thereby improve. This does not work. Let me give you an analogy. Imagine you live in a brick house and your neighbour is throwing bricks at it. Will your walls become stronger or smoother? Of course not: those bricks will simply lay scattered on the ground. The same happens when you apply a collagen cream. Collagen is a large

molecule, it does not penetrate the skin but stays idly on top of it, only to be washed off during your next shower. Traditional collagen creams are not entirely useless because collagen can hold moisture and makes a decent moisturizer. But do not expect these creams to strengthen your skin. I prefer topical treatments that work on regenerating your own skin like Retinol, vitamin C and the crème de la crème, Human Growth Factor, which started in the treatment of burns victims when applying skin grafts as these are the only ingredients proven to aid in collagen formation in the skin. That is not to say that proteins etc aren’t useful, but they may aid the skins hydration levels more than actually rebuilding it.

RECOVERY SERUM BENEFITS • • • •

Effective combination of Growth Factor technology and antioxidants to achieve younger looking skin Supplements the skin to address signs of aging Can encourage healing after skin resurfacing procedures May calm inflammation and irritation caused by some skin treatments

This highly concentrated formula is excellent for helping to improve the appearance of aging, damaged and post-procedure skin. The formula may enhance the natural restorative processes of the skin, which can repair and regenerate skin tissue by stimulating collagen production, circulation, antioxidant activity and cellular renewal.

DO COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS REALLY WORK? If you want a true collagen supplement that works for your skin, look for one that contains Type 1 Hydrolyzed Collagen with High Bioavailability. An anti-ageing super Hero with multivitamin additives. The main constituents of collagen, glycine, proline, alanine and hydroxy; replenishing these amino acids which are be needed to maintain the amount of collagen at healthy levels and thus prevent skin ageing. What’s exciting is that you can directly influence the dermis, the deepest layer of the skin, by supplementation with BioDermal Hydrolysed Collagen. Peptides generated by hydrolysis of a large collagen molecule can have great benefits on health and can improve skin properties. Biodermal Hydro-Collagen is formulated to improve fine lines and wrinkles, boost skin hydration/firmness and post-operative healing and improve aesthetic treatments results like micro-needling. Other benefits: Improves hair condition, enhances bone health, repairs ligament injuries/ wear and tear of muscles, aids in weight management and boosts muscle growth.

AGE GAPS IN RELATIONSHIPS – HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

By Janet Winterbourne

When it comes to relationships, does an age difference matter? Times are changing and with that so are the stereotypes of what is and isn’t generally considered as being an acceptable age gap in a relationship –It is now commonplace to see considerable variables in ages between couples, and not necessarily just older man/younger woman examples. A commonly accepted idea has been that men preferred to partner with younger women, Fundamental Parental Investment Theory ascribes this to procreation driven attraction to fertility and reproductive factors. Women on the other hand using the same principal are reportedly drawn to older men because of their perceived increased resources and the safety this would provide for her offspring, this ‘age differential effect’ is well documented in David Buss’s 1989 classic study of human mating. Fast forwarding to present day, a different research approach by The Boston Globe and The Washington Post chose to match people’s compatibility for blind dates based on an online questionnaire, analysis from both sources

varied slightly, but the couples mostly used their own individual perception of age appropriateness as an initial key tool for a potential negative rating for the date, however, post date summary revealed that age differences versus compatibility factors did not support the ‘age differential effect’ - the authors interpretation of these results concluded that while age seemed paramount in the abstract, (older man/younger woman older woman/younger man) in practice, when two people actually go on a date, the age difference may not have as much importance as other considerations such as physical attraction and a compatible personality. The authors believe that these results have ecological validity, stating that the experimental conditions brought about results which prove that ‘real-life’ age

discrepancies need not be a deal breaker for a good relationship. Could this experiment reflect the shifting social landscape? As women can now earn more money, does a partner’s age matter less? Most of the research relating to age differences in the distant past was conducted at a time when the gender pay gap was immensely different. Relationship roles are vastly different now to those of our parents? Couples co-parent and role reversal in relationships is not at all unusual, might this allow for a broadening of the mind whereby an older or younger partner may offer ‘other’ benefits, different perhaps, but more appropriate to the individual couples needs?

DANGERS OF OVER STRETCHING By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

“Stretching may increase your flexibility, but you will most likely be weaker and the results are often short-lived. In 2004, a report published by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) questioned the efficacy of stretching; noting that more than 350 studies conducted over four decades had failed to establish that stretching prior to activity prevents injury.” monly occur in the lower back, hamstrings and inner thigh. However, pulled muscles can occur virtually anywhere in your body that muscles and tendons are located.

When you stretch, you take your muscle to the point where you can feel a slight pull and hold this position for a few seconds without pain or discomfort. However, if you stretch your muscles beyond their normal range of motion, you may experience a pulled muscle -or muscle strain. This is overstretching. A common problem is when exercise enthusiasts stretch while the muscle is still cold. By trying to lengthen muscles in a tightened state, there is a risk of causing “micro” tears. If you experience delayed pain in your muscle that occurs about one to two days after your stretching, the pain is most likely caused by tiny tears in the muscle. Symptoms of a pulled muscle depend upon on the site and severity of your injury. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, muscle spasms and the limited ability to move the affected muscle, including weight bearing/walking if the affected muscle is in your leg. Strains most com-

Damaging a muscle through any means, including overstretching, will have an adverse effect on our ability to move. The loss of efficient movement puts stress on virtually all other structures — ligaments, tendons, joints and bones, in addition to many muscles. The body tries to compensate for this irregular movement, and in doing so uses up more energy, effects athletic performance and increases the risk of injury. A study, conducted by J. Cramer and colleagues from the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Texas, compared changes in muscles that were stretched and not stretched in the same person. It concluded that stretching one muscle can also impair another muscle that was not stretched, possibly through a neurological inhibitory mechanism. Other studies demonstrated adverse effects on lower limb power, sprinting ability, vertical jump and aerobic endurance training. So what causes muscle imbalances and the feeling of tight muscles and the need to stretch? Well, muscle imbalances occur for many reasons. Many people have poor posture and faulty movement patterns which sets up inhibitory neurological signals within the body. This leads to muscle imbalance and fascial

www.hearingclinic.co.za

If you have a muscle pull or tear, from overstretching you should discontinue exercise and begin osteopathic treatment. Osteopaths will assess and treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction and try and establish the root cause for any flexibility issues. Osteopaths may suggest exercise that helps reestablished natural movement patterns to help balancing areas of dysfunction and poor flexibility. An effective warm-up should include a few controlled compound movements done through full range of motion. These movement drills help lubricate joints, increase muscle temperature and established healthy movement patterns. Then, consider why you need to stretch, then perform slow and gentle stretches instead of quick stretches. There are always exceptions to every rule ie with gymnasts and dancers. The static stretching for these individuals should still be handled very carefully to avoid injury.

adhesions which further inhibit normal movement and can cause chronic pain and dysfunction. When muscles aren’t used normally as nature intended, they eventually shorten and the related joints become less mobile, decreasing your range of motion. This is referred to as inflexibility. Observation of animals and how they use their whole body with each movement which helps them retain their strength, flexibility and health is interesting to note. So essentially, if you are moving well (as nature intended) throughout the day you are always stretching to some degree and keeping your body in balance.
