Cindy & Bonnie are complete role models for other working Mums out there. I’ll go further and specify all Mom’s out there. Because we all know, that even if we don’t hold down a job outside the house, motherhood is one of the hardest jobs there is. And often the most thankless. Whenever one of my stay-at-home mom friends asks me how I juggle work with motherhood, I’m usually quite candid in my reply. “How do you stay at home with your kid/s all day, whilst juggling housework, without going mad.” An airconditioned office and adult company/conversation can certainly be the easier of the two scenarios. But needs must and we as strong, powerful women, do what we need to in order to survive. And to thrive. One flick down our facebook newsfeeds and we’re bombarded with dozens of often conflicting and downright harrowing advice on the do’s and don’ts of modern parenting. I read something just recently that made me appalled at my own parenting style. Until I realised something critical. That we’re all just doing our best. That there is no definitive manual. That our best is always good enough. That all we can arm our children with, like literally the most important ingredient in successful parenting is quite simply, love. I think this extends out of parenting and into all other realms too. And my kids have this in spades. And I’m sure yours do too. So, happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful women out there. You’re all my heroes.

CINDY NELL-ROBERTS & BONNIE MBULI: “Women standing together are very Powerful! ”

By Danni Thunell Ende

Both Bonnie & Cindy are extremely successful and entrepreneurial working Mothers, making them perfect for our Mother’s Day cover. Bonnie is more than just a household name in South Africa, she was the child-star that won the hearts of South Africans and continues to be a role model for young professionals. Cindy is also a household name, a former Miss South- Africa turned Television presenter, she has a string of achievements under her belt including Miss Universe Runner Up 2003. She is Co-Owner of the Cosmetic Company “Cosmetix”, Mother, Model, MC and Socialite. We caught up with them to get some tips on juggling work with motherhood and much more… Would could SA do to better support working mother’s? B: I think we can start by opening dialogue where HR and management of companies in SA are in constant communication with mothers in their organizations to create a platform to comfortably communicate what their needs are and how they can be better supported in the workplace. What is your top tip for juggling work with motherhood? C: Plan your week in advance and stick to the plan as much as possible. Also plan for relaxing and fun time for everyone. B: My top tip is to take it a day at a time. Don’t isolate yourself, find a community of mothers you can trust and build supportive friendships with them- a space where you know you can count on each other at a moment’s notice should you need help. How would you spend your ideal Mother’s Day? C: I’d love to spend the whole day on the beach

with my family digging in the sand and eating ice creams and flying kites. B: My ideal Mother’s Day would be an all-day pamper affair at the SPA and a lovely dinner with my family to end it off. How can women empower other women? C: Network more, exchange contacts and ideas freely. Stop gossiping and breaking each other down. Rather build each other up. There is enough sunshine for everyone. Women standing together are very powerful! B: Women can empower each other by not making unnecessary adversaries out of one another and by realizing that every woman you meet is facing a challenge, has a dream, loves her family and has fears and hopes just like yourself. What’s your favourite guilty cheat treat? C: Bread, wine and cheese B: Shopping when I shouldn’t be and ending it with a glass of white wine and some good sushi.

What is the best piece of advice you could give your children? C: Stay grateful and be kind to others. Kind energy attracts kind energy. Having good manners is very important too. B: That belief in yourself is also a super power. What do you find most challenging about combining work with motherhood? B: My work hours are erratic so everything is always changing, which is just the nature of the industry I work in, making it tough to create watertight routines.

SA HOME LOANS SUPPORTS WORKING MOTHERS

We asked these inspirational ladies from SA Home Loans how they manage juggling work and motherhood?

It is all about team work. Each family member has their tasks or duties after work and wow we get it done. Being a full time mother and juggling work has become easier with age. - Michelle de Lange MichelleL@sahomeloans. com

I have been a property consultant for more than 30 years and, with the support of my loving husband, I have been able to develop the kind of balance required to focus on both family and work. Work problems stays at work and home problems don’t accompany me to work either. We are blessed with an extended family of grannies, aunts, parents; just about everyone pitches in and are concerned about our mutual welfare.

- Shami Roberts shamir@sahomeloans.com

To manage both roles is a huge learning curve as a single mom. To be a professional career woman and a mother is not for the faint-hearted , if one is not sufficient, passionate and competent it will be very difficult to succeed. The reality is to juggle between a career and motherhood requires one to be better than average and I believe that mothers are usually better at multi-tasking then males. To have a child and be a mother keeps me motivated, focussed and goal orientated. - Ilse Petula Cloete

IlseC@sahomeloans.com

With support. Managing my very busy day is not always easy but without the help from my husband, son and parents I would not manage. Juggling between ballet, softball, choir, hockey and my job I absolutely love is an art and not an easy one at that. Well Done to all the working moms... YOU ARE SUPERSTARS!!!

Balancing my time is crucial. Maximising my time with family on the weekends is most important to me. I love creating memorable moments with my kids. When I’m at work, I stay focused, and realise and appreciate the contribution my job is making to my family and home life.

My son is my priority. If he needs me I am always there. I give my ALL to my work, because it helps me make and give my son James a better future. So it motivates me to push harder. I will put in extra hours and effort whenever I need to, to make a success of what I do. Often James asks me why am I working so hard, and why there is always work to be done. And my answer is always so that Mommy can pay for things and give you a good life :)

- Amanda van der Merwe AmandavdM@sahomeloans.com

My daughter Shannon is at college and attends lectures 2 – 3 times a week. Fortunately the college is only 3 roads from my office but it does take planning to fit in my appointments around her schedule. My husband does no cooking or grocery shopping at all as he is the old fashioned type! I plan meals for the week, shop once a week on a Saturday or Sunday, and know exactly what I am going to cook every evening. Shannon helps with vacuuming, clearing the dishwasher and making the dog food. On the whole, it works like clockwork. - Beverly Jacobson BeverlyJ@sahomeloans.com

COVER CELEB

TIPS ON GETTING YOUR GARDEN READY FOR AUTUMN By Tracey Cole

April and May are the main planting times in the Western Cape and when the dry season has been broken by the first winter rains, the soil is perfect to plant fynbos like restios, proteas, leucadendrons and ericas. Finish planting

8

out winter and spring flower seedlings this month. For sunny spots try plant: alyssum, delphinium, dianthus, Iceland poppies, statice, Shirley poppy, nemesias, gazanias, godetia, pansy and viola, calendulas, ornamental kale, helichrysum and stocks; while for shady spots try aquilegia, Canterbury bells, nicotiana, cineraria, primulas and foxgloves. Nemesias are really worth planting because they are indigenous to the Cape and thrive in our region, despite their delicate appearance. May is also traditionally the month to sow sweet peas in the Cape. Trim shrubs in the garden, to allow some extra sunlight into the winter garden. Raise containers off the ground to prevent them from getting water

logged. Finish pruning your summer flowering shrubs and mulch your entire garden if you did not do so last month. Fertilize your winter and spring flowering plants regularly with organic 3:1:5. Put down Ferramol organic snail bait, it stops the snails from feeding and is safe to use around children and pets. Cover your compost heap to prevent it becoming too wet. Tidy up perennials like lavender, daisy bushes and geraniums. Take hardwood cuttings of your plectranthus when they have finished flowering. Autumn is a good time to plant lawn plugs for areas which have suffered. Remember that Kikuyu lawn does not grow well in the shade and may rot in wet weather; plant Berea grass

instead. Feed with organic food pellets and bone meal, and apply a light top dressing. Allow your lawn to grow quite long before cutting and do not mow it too short; mow Buffalo lawn for the last time. I’m passionate about bringing nature into one’s garden and not pushing nature away, so please try NOT to use pesticides, we have other organic ideas and means for pest control so just give us a call

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW... AND A CONTRACT By Rene Barry-Kleynhans, Notary Public and Conveyancer

When I walked down the aisle ten years ago I made sure that I had my “Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.”

married you are in fact protecting your spouse against the consequences of a marriage in community of property and possible claims by creditors in the event that your business venture does not succeed or you are declared insolvent. In marriages in community of property you and your spouse are seen as one legal entity – with potentially disastrous consequences.

And I am very sure that most brides to be have given thought to what those items would be. What this rhyme does not provide for however is the all important item called an Antenuptial Contract. Often brides do not wish to taint their starry eyed love affair by casting their thoughts to entering into a An Antenuptial Contract, properly considered and drafted, will contract and there are so many negative connotations that I guard against such eventualities. MEDICAL SKIN CARE VS COSMETIC PRODUCTS There are three reasons why there is a remarkable difference between cosmeceuticals (medical skin care products) and cosmetic (over-thecounter) products. 1) Concentration of Active Ingredients Active ingredients are formulated to address particular concerns or conditions, for this reason, they have to have very specific formulations to target and treat the specific problem. Over-the-counter products are formulated for the general public and therefore cannot be too active. The use of active ingredients in cosmetic products is limited by law to minimise skin reactions. This includes the number of ingredients used, the grade or quality of the ingredients, as well as the concentrations (potency) and dosages.

The number of active ingredients used, the grade or quality of actives, as well as the concentrations in medical products, are much higher, making the products much more active. These products can only be prescribed by medical doctors, who will ensure that a specific condition is addressed and the best results are achieved, without causing damage to the skin. 2) Penetration Into The Skin Over-the-counter products may not penetrate as deeply into the skin as they have limited active ingredients, less sophisticated delivery systems and lesser concentrations of actives. In the case of the cosmeceuticals, the active ingredients are formulated to reach the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis). It is at this level

that collagen is restored or remodeled, elastin is affected, hyaluronic acid is produced, and the causes of skin ageing are addressed, thus the difference in the results seen. For those serious about anti-ageing, it is essential to use products that reach the dermis where the skin is actually transformed.

Cosmeceuticals are the only products that can change the skin because the active ingredients can reach the dermis where the important transformative functions are performed. It is therefore very important to be under the care and supervision of a Doctor or qualified therapist to ensure that you are using the right products for your skin type, in the correct way.

3) Scientific Backup Over-the-counter products often have pretty packaging and claim to deliver certain results through expensive advertising campaigns. It is, however, scientifically proven that medical products give results and improve the skin. They can back up their claims with clinical data based on testing the complete product, not a random ingredient, as is often the case with many cosmetics.

Using cosmeceuticals while having medical aesthetic treatments is like having a personal trainer for your skin. You need your therapist or doctor treatments, but you also need to know exactly what to do at home to maintain a radiant, youthful, problem-free skin. NARCISSISTIC RELATIONSHIPS - HOW TO IDENTIFY IF YOU ARE IN ONE? By Janet Winterbourne

Narcissism in recent times has become a buzzword frequently bandied about in therapy sessions with many people questioning whether they are the victim of a narcissist in their own relationship. If you are feeling confused and can’t understand why it always seems to be you that is in the wrong in your relationship, and you don’t seem to ever be able to do right in your partners eyes, you may indeed be trapped in your partners narcissistic personality. Typically, at an early stage in the relationship you would be wooed by your partner’s charisma and charming personality, they may be very confident and popular amongst others, adoring of you with affectionate public displays and show you a high level of attentive interest. You may have felt totally secure and loved and all is good with the world. One day however, there is a shift in the mood, it may make you feel uncomfortable and needing to ascertain what is wrong, and then put it right! It is often at this point that the narcissistic side of a person’s personality is revealed, and they may maintain that public affable persona, but behind closed doors things become very different.

If you feel that this sounds like you in your relationship you should seek professional counsel in order to ratify your thoughts or not. Working with narcissism is very difficult as this is a deep-seated personality disorder and you may need to learn coping techniques so that you can manage yourself in the relationship.

5.

So, what are you looking for as key pointers to identifying a narcissist? The nine-point checklist from the American Psychiatry Association describes the following.

If we look at key public figures past and present it would not be difficult to identify the narcissist at its most obvious if we look at dictatorships, and political groups especially.

1.

Wanting to get things back on track, you try and try often to no avail. From there on you may find yourself blamed for every minor issue with the narcissistic partner refusing to take accountability for themselves or their part in a problem.

2.

Bear in mind that to be diagnosed a narcissist, an assessment needs to prove that five of the listed 9 behaviours exist, and it is also important to note that at some level, we all display mild symptoms of narcissism, that doesn’t mean we are narcissists if we fall within a healthy range and that it does not impact on relationships.

3. 4.

Grandiosity and feelings of self-importance, sometimes exaggerating their achievements Lack of Empathy – an inability to relate to the feelings of others Manipulative Traits – taking advantage of others Fantasies of great power, success, beauty or intelligence

A sense of their own uniqueness, and imagining that others envy them. Arrogance A sense of entitlement and special treatment Feelings of envy of others successes An all consuming need for admiration and recognition from others.

WITH SO MANY OPTIONS AND CONFLICTING STATEMENTS, HOW DO WE CHOOSE THE CORRECT PATH TO HEALTHY SKIN? By Amy Bowie Well I’d like to start by saying that everything has its place in the industry... well most things at least, when I hear of things like the fire facial or putting snails all over your face it really makes me wonder! But when choosing the correct treatment for your concerns it can be really confusing as a consumer, so here are a few tips to help you along your path to a more luminous and healthy skin... 1. Always go back to basics! I always tell my patients put all those U.V lights and Visia photos aside, cleanse your skin and pick up a mirror. Start from the top of your face and work your way down, what do you see? Be specific and write down anything that may be bothering you. 2. What is your social calendar going to be like? This will help you to determine the amount of ‘downtime’ you will be able to manage. Most patients chose a more gradual course of treatment whereby each session gets you closer and closer to the end goal, but lets face it.... sometimes you might have a really hot date in 6 weeks and will endure a little bit more of a dry or freckled appearance for a few days to ensure that you look picture perfect on the big

day. Sometimes we have to get through the hate to get to the love!

It’s nearly that time of year again; time to celebrate the wonderful woman in your life who has given you so much – your Mother.

STATIC PULL-UPS – KEY TO NECK AND SHOULDER HEALTH “You can’t fire a cannon from a canoe.”

forward head posture, these muscles get weak and drastically underused. Abnormal scapular biomechanics predispose the neck and shoulder to injury, pain, stiffness and headaches.

This expression, refers to the fact that the production of great force requires a solid platform — a concept that holds as true for the human body as it does for artillery. The scapula is commonly known as the “shoulder blade”, and rests on the upper portion of the back. The role of the scapula muscles is critical in the stability and mobility of the neck and shoulder joint as the shoulder girdle is held in position by muscle tone (levator scapula and trapezius muscles attach to the neck bones). The scapula serves as a foundation from which the shoulder or arm can generate force. Inadequate shoulder stability and strength is common with daily sitting, hunching the back and

Appropriate exercises that help the scapular muscles do their job better are so important for improving motion and decreasing pain. The isometric (static) pullup can help you improve your posture, reduce neck and shoulder dysfunction, increase shoulder girdle stability, increase your overall strength and overcome a plateau in many of your lifts. Pull ups use all the muscles in your forearms for grip, your biceps, upper back, shoulders, chest and trunk muscles. It can take a considerable time to build the necessary strength to perform a pull up and the isometric pull-up is a very important first step. An isometric exercise, is a static exercise. So rather than lifting yourself up and down, you just hold yourself on the bar. Any stable platform can be used a bookcase, security railings, jungle gym gate or tree branch, but a purpose made bar is best. Depending on the height of your bar, you may need to stand on a box, or bench. Beginners should start by standing on tip toes, toes remaining on the floor throughout the exercise. Grip the bar shoulder width apart, with your palms facing away. Beginners should start by standing on tip toes. Pull yourself up, using your biceps, so your chest is just under the bar. Keep your chest puffed out, elbows pulled down and back, and focus on squeezing the shoulder blades together hard. Now hold it right there for seven seconds. Then relax seven

seconds and repeat seven times. Progression would be to increase the time and hold yourself for as long as possible. When you are confident progress on to one leg and no legs over time. You can repeat this isometric exercise, at any point of the pull up movement. Meaning you could repeat the same exercise, but this time hanging from the bar anywhere in between the top and bottom parts of the movement. For many people that wish to resolve their shoulder and or neck pain, and overall function, scapular stabilization is a very important first step. Osteopaths are trained in biomechanics and will be able to explain the relationship between the neck, upper back and scapula muscles. Osteopaths are trained to assess and treat, neck and shoulder dysfunction and recommend appropriate exercise. Scapular musculature and function are extremely important when examining upper body health, strength, stability and ultimately, performance. A properly functioning scapula delivers significant stability for an individual. If your shoulders are weak and you cannot control them fully, be aware of your limitations. Make improving your shoulder strength and scapular control your number one priority. You may want to consider seeing an osteopath. “Optimal scapular alignment and ultimately stabilization is also reliant upon a properly aligned and controlled thorax. Often postural and movement dysfunction of the shoulder can be directly related to loss of alignment and control of the thorax” - (Lee 2013, Osar 2016)
