often encouraged to choose. To stay at home with the kiddies, to have a thriving career or to devote ourselves to a husband and the list goes on. Nowadays, there are so many inspirational women who have broken the mould and are striving to be great mums, entrepreneurs, partners and all-round role models. I read a quote recently that resonated: “The obligation for mothers is a very precise one: the feeling that one ought to work as if one did not have children, while raising one’s children as if one did not

MAXINE BENATAR: WOMEN CAN HAVE IT ALL! By Danni Thunell Ende

Well known fashion designer, entrepreneur, mom of two and fitness fanatic tells us why women can and should have it all. With Mother’s Day around the corner she’s the perfect inspiration for our cover. What inspired you to get into fashion? I began sketching when I was 9! I think not having the means to buy clothing really contributed to my desire to create clothing. I loved to sketch and would draw for hours. Do you have any advice for other woman entrepreneurs? I don’t think as a woman a career should be optional. It’s a necessity for financial stability and to keep us sane! My advice is don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do it all ... because you can!!! We can be moms, wives and businesswomen. It requires a lot of juggling, but it can be done. What are the hottest trends this Winter? This winter is all about the frill or ruffle sleeve. Oversized and feminine Tell us about your new range? Kokodakota means beyond the city. This range is a culmination of years of travel and my passion for resort wear. It’s clothing that you will live in and love and want to wear over and over again. My hope is that the clothing will inspire the wandering soul in all of you. I am producing small units of each style to keep it unique, exclusive and interesting. Each piece was inspired by a different city or island. I use beautiful laces, saris, prints, beads and interesting trims. What 3 celebrities would you invite to dinner (dead or alive) and why? Jennifer Lopez for sure. She is the epitome of a

women entrepreneur ... juggling motherhood and a huge career. I think I would invite Beyoncé too because she is fierce and embodies the empowered women of today! And then I would want Kris Jenner to come- I think I could learn a fortune from her. All 3 of these women work very hard even though I am sure they could all retire! How do you stay in such great shape? I’m an exercise fanatic. I train 6 days a week- doing boxing, Switch classes, Sweat 1000 classes, Sculpt Classes at Yoga Life and Barre Body! How do you juggle motherhood with a busy career? I have help. An incredible au pair who helps with lifts and homework and a loving and supportive husband! What should a woman never travel without? I always carry a mini face moisturizer and hand cream. What are your top 3 beauty product must-haves? Instant spray tan make-up for the face by ‘that’s so’! It’s the best product ever! Mac ‘upward ‘Black mascara and Molecule perfume. How can women empower other women? By teaching young girls the importance of being financially independent and teaching them critical life skills.

RETIREMENT VILLAGES OR OLD AGE HOMES

Unfortunately, too many people from their late fifties and older, shun the idea of buying into a Retirement Village. They’re either “too young” or “they’re gonna have to take me out of my house feet first” and all too often, this is because of a lack of understanding the difference between an Old Age Home and a Retirement Village. An Old Age Home is a facility that caters to aged people who can no longer live independently – either through illness, or just old age. A Retirement Village, on the other hand, caters to both those who can no longer live independently, and those who are capable of living independently, ie are still actively working, cycling, playing golf, playing tennis, hiking, fishing – and not forgetting braaing. The beauty of this, is that when you reach the stage when you can no longer carry on with these activities for whatever reason, you have various care levels that can be utilised in your cottage if required; or you may choose to move to the Assisted Living apartments, or when the time comes, into Frail Care. So, what is the ideal time to move into a Retirement Village? There is no definitive answer to this question, but some mitigating arguments in favour of moving into a Retirement Village sooner, rather than later, are: • The children have grown up and have moved out. • Rattling around in a huge house with all the maintenance issues and costs. • Increased security demands. • Reduced dependence upon adult children and family for support. • Establish new friendships and avoid loneliness in your later years. (Eleanor Rigby syndrome) A good alternative is Kronendal Retirement Village in Hout Bay: • The Village comprises of 57 free-hold cottages. • 52 well appointed assisted living apartments and

• • • • • • • • • • • •

a frail care unit with independent suites – not a dormitory. Free-Hold ownership of your cottage. A lock-up-and-go situation, so that you can go travelling whenever it suits you. Access to beautiful gardens, a lake with abundant bird-life and safe strolling areas at any time of the day or night. Excellent security. Basic medical facilities on site. Regular outings. Bridge Club. Bingo Club or Knitting Circle. Professional entertainment – musicians, dancing, talks etc. Occupational therapy classes. Hairdressing salon. Beauty and massage therapy.

Kronendal Retirement Village in Hout Bay accepts residents from 50 years of age and in addition to the points mentioned above, have the following benefits: • The levies at R3 912 per month have remained at this level for 6 years and cover domestic water, access to the clinic, security – including a stateof-the-art camera system that is monitored on site and off site – garden services. • The exterior of the cottages are painted every 5 years and the exterior timber re-sealed every 3 years. • 15 meals per month in the dining room (additional three course main meals, with choice options can be had at a cost R67.00, payable at the end of the month with your levies)

• Access to the communal facilities such as the library, lounge, bar, hairdressing salon and treatment room etc. • Optic fibre has been installed in all cottages for both TV and Wi-fi. • Peace of mind with regards to your security when coming home after dark. • Hout Bay is a beautiful area with good restaurants, medical services, supermarkets and a huge variety of other shops and services on your doorstep. • Camps Bay, Cavendish Square and Constantia Village are all a 20-minute drive away. • We are no more than 10 minutes away from the nearest wine estate (Hout Bay Vineyards) and 30 minutes to Buitenverwachting, Steenberg, Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia, to name but a few. Probably, the most important factor to moving in earlier rather than later, is that you buy at today’s price and the bonus is that in addition to the benefits mentioned above, you do not have to change your lifestyle. Furthermore, it is far less traumatic making a move when you are younger.

ATTORNEY REALTOR HUB MOVING AHEAD IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS Since its inception in March last year, the Attorney Realtor Hub (The Hub) has carved a niche for itself by being a valued platform for many attorneys wanting to serve their clients better by including the sales of clients’ properties to the list of services offered by their firms. Hub members have access to high end technology and a vast net of cross referrals (through their own networks and clients) and this is proving to be a useful toolkit for many, says Charlene Nolte-Joubert, one of the founding members of The Hub and partner at Henkes Nolte-Joubert. There are now 39 firms of attorneys registered and 62 active users, and this list is growing at a steady pace. “We plan to be one of the biggest collective property sale facilitators in the country,” says Nolte-Joubert. Attorneys, sellers and buyers can leverage the wide range of cutting edge FinTech and PropertyTech tools

and resources (all property tools facilitated and made available by the Attorney Realtor Hub) to achieve the best possible sale, at the best possible price, in the shortest possible time.

• Access to a huge pool of potential buyers. • Rent2buy Finance. An attorney as a property realtor, with a support team of qualified estate agents, can assist sellers and buyers in negotiating and concluding the largest and most important financial transaction they will make in their lifetime.

The key benefits of the tools and unique services made available by the Attorney Realtor Hub service are: • Only cash or prequalified buyers are introduced to sellers. • Viewing of properties is revolutionised with modern technology via a virtual reality tour system. • Sales commission is a recommended fee of 2,5% + VAT.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

A nurturing approach to non-surgical aesthetics

Amy Bowie is the founder and heart of Pulse Dermatology and Laser in Kenridge, Cape Town. From anti-ageing injectables, bespoke peels, advanced fat removal and body sculpting to treatments targeting acne, stretch marks and psoriasis, the clinic specialises in the area of non-surgical medical aesthetics, which corrects conditions in a manner that doesn’t require outright cosmetic surgery. Prior to opening Pulse, Bowie spent seven years in the UK honing her practice working alongside renowned dermatologists, before returning to South Africa to share her experience with her hometown. In addition to being a literal hands-on business owner, Bowie is also a new mom, an experience she says has rejuvenated her energy to focus on furthering her offering to cater for postpartum clients. As such she has introduced a set of treatments specifically focused on assisting women with their unique cases both during and after pregnancy. In the spirit of Entrepreneur Month, Bowie takes us through the appeal of non-surgical aesthetics and Pulse Dermatology and Laser’s tailored, thoughtful approach to it, as well as her refreshed focus on new mothers. For the uninitiated, what is non-surgical medical aesthetics all about? I see it as bridging the gap between beauty treatments and surgery without having to go under the knife. It’s about getting real results whilst avoiding the downtime associated with surgical procedures. What persuaded you to pursue the field of non-surgical medical aesthetics as a career? Definitely the first time I treated a lady for acne. Seeing the confidence she had after she experienced great results was so rewarding for me. How do you juggle being a new mom (congrats!) and a business owner? With lots and lots of coffee :) Just kidding, I honestly use all the help I can get. I am so grateful that I have an amazing support structure including my employees and family and friends. You’ve recently introduced a set of treatments catering to new mothers. Tell us about the new offering. Being a new mom myself I have seen first-hand the toll pregnancy and

breastfeeding can take on a woman. Most places just turn pregnant and breastfeeding women away. I have not only come up with special medfacials for pregnancy that are results-driven to treat the hormonal fluctuations but also pampering. And for after baby is here, we have an array of treatments for everything from stretch marks to pigmentation treatment. A woman’s body is truly miraculous in the maternity process and it’s something that should be celebrated, and that includes allowing new moms to feel great about their bodyies post pregnancy and even during pregnancy. What do you believe makes Pulse Dermatology and Laser stand out among competitors? Our staff do solely medical aesthetic treatments, we don’t do waxing and massage, etc., so patients know that the therapist treating them is very experienced. Anti-ageing from within When it comes to anti-ageing, a good skincare routine is vital but what you put into your body is just as important. As it turns out, there’s a lot that you can do to minimise the effects of ageing and many of these solutions involve treatments that work from the inside out. At selected Skin and Health Renewal branches you’ll find a great selection of supplements, topical treatments and even IV infusion therapy that can help restore your youthful glow from within.

C and E as well as minerals like selenium and copper. We have a great selection of supplements to be taken orally, or you could try one of our doctor-prescribed IV Infusion that delivers nutrition straight into your bloodstream for maximum benefit.

Hooray for hormone therapy

Don’t ever think it’s okay to skip out on sunscreen but know that certain nutrients can boost your skin’s natural sun protection factor. Vitamin D is one of them and you’ll find it in Lamelle Ovelle D3. A great multitasking supplement, it also helps inhibit the breakdown of collagen and reduces hormonal pigmentation.

Be sun savvy

Changes in hormonal levels can visibly affect our skin but we can help you minimise the effects with natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BIHRT from Reakiri). This helps keep your hormonal profile within a youthful range. You could also try a topical Estriol cream to improve the look of pigmentation and wrinkles. Consider a supplement Your skin needs a ‘balanced diet’ of nutrients that includes antioxidant vitamins like A, Stockist of:

#WORLDFOSTERDAY 31 MAY 2018 By Danni Thunell Ende

South Africa is home to thousands of children in need of alternative care. #Worldfosterday on 31 May 2018 is the first initiative of it’s kind to educate, raise awareness and gather people around this important issue in our society. Healthy children who are loved and feel safe makes this country great.

Joining the #worldfosterday movement can be done in a few easy steps. Start by drawing a smiley face on any three fingers, capture your family of smiley faces by taking a picture and share it on social media on 31 May 2018 using #worldfosterday Show a foster family some love or contact your closest organisation to get involved on a more permanent basis. #Worldfosterday aims to advocate and empower individuals, organisations, churches and government to get involved in this form of alternative care in South Africa. Numerous scientific studies and research show the positive effect that a

healthy family environment has on a child and the clear advantages that this has for society as a whole. For this purpose #Worldfosterday aims to shine a light on foster care. Foster care is defined as the placement of a child, who needs to be removed from the parental home, into the custody of a suitable family or person willing to be foster parents. Understanding the complexities of alternative care and the great need for foster families puts us on the road to a long term, sustainable solution.* 31 May 2018 will become a day of joining families, organisations, churches and government in doing their part for creating a bright future for children in South Africa. #Worldfosterday is

partnering with various organisations already doing great work in their communities and individuals are encouraged to find a family to support, volunteer at various organisations or even just to learn more about this issue. World Foster Day is pioneered by Kin Culture (www.kinculture.org) and Kibwe Kids (www. kibwekids.org), a joint effort to provide a better life for children in South Africa. Please visit our website www.worldfosterday. org for more info or follow World Foster Day on Social Media. You can also contact info@ worldfosterday.org or 083 270 7774 for more information. *Source: www.westerncape.gov.za

ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO GET MOVING IN THE MORNING? By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

Do you find it unbearable to get out of the bed the first thing in the morning because of the pain which you feel? – be it a stiff neck, sore back, or other issues. Morning stiffness can vary from slight stiffening of the body, to near-complete immobility and can affect your ability to perform daily routines in the house or at work. The average episode lasts only about 10 to 15 minutes. The stiffness goes away as you move and warm up the joints and muscles. Morning stiffness that becomes frequent can be a cause of concern and might be an indication of musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis or this can be a symptom of another disorder which may need an evaluation by your osteopath. When we sleep at night we do not move very much (even if you are one who rolls around all over the bed,

“We conclude that when the fluids of the body are stopped in the fascia, organs and other parts of the system, stagnation, fermentation, heat and general confusion will follow . . .” Dr. A.T. Still, D.O. (Founder of Osteopathy) 1874 we tend to stay in a limited number of positions for a prolonged period of time. We do not always sleep in the most ergonomic positions. If we fall asleep or move into an unnatural position for our joints, that position can put undue stress on our musculoskeletal system throughout the night. Through the evening, as we sleep, the lymph fluid gradually drains from the blood vessels, and may pool especially around inflamed areas where the tissue is already damaged or swollen like in specific joints, tendons and muscles. Lymph fluid circulation mainly depends on muscle contraction to move through the body. When we sleep this lack of motion impacts on lymph circulation and excess fluid makes the tissue swell more, making it difficult to move until the patient wakes up and starts moving and muscle contractions, restoring circulation and allowing the extra fluid to dissipate. Another fluid accumulation or imbibition is a process that happens in our spinal discs. Throughout the night, our discs get rehydrated. This is why we are slightly taller in the morning (1-2 cm) but also any small back issues we have are exaggerated with the increased pressure from this extra fluid. After a night’s sleep or long period of inactivity your fascia (connective tissue) that wraps around your muscle, joints, nerves and organs, can stick together. Over the years, this creates adhesions in the tissues and it impairs lymphatic circu-

lation. The problem is that just like glue fascia can get sticky especially when the water content of the body drops and we become immobile. Movement is critical for our joints and muscles, and because of this lack of motion, those structures tend to tighten up and give us that feeling of stiffness. Some of the basic causes for morning stiffness include lack of physical activity on a daily basis, inappropriate exercise, being overweight, a poor diet, not getting enough sleep, trauma, improper body mechanics and poor posture. There are many conditions associated with joint pain, morning joint stiffness and swelling. Some chronic diseases like arthritis have a link with morning stiffness, and it can also develop in association with physical activity or temporary injury. Are you struggling to get moving in the morning? Consider discussing the situation with an osteopath, who will look at determining the underlying problem. After performing a thorough assessment, your osteopath will decide on the best course of treatment. Osteopathic treatment is commonly used for joint stiffness and muscle tension, which can restrict your body’s movement and/or cause pain. It will free up these problems and allow you to move normally. Osteopathic treatment may include myofascial release, massage, subtle joint manipulation and lymphatic drainage.

SOUL MATE SEARCHING…

Should we buy into this concept?

By Janet Winterbourne

Many people believe that out there amongst the seven billion people in the world is our one true soul mate, and seeking that special one can become an entrenched belief and so the search begins. But, is this so? Research shows that people with a strong belief in fate and destiny are often left disappointed when their partner turns out not quite as expected and they believe that they didn’t really find their one true soul mate after all? This leads to unhealthy thinking about love. For example, you fall in love, it’s the ‘infatuation’ stage where your partner can do no wrong and the relationship has not been tested. This is a short lived phase, love begins when you start seeing your partners less than perfect side. People with a strong belief in destiny often lose interest when the relationship starts to look less than rosy, I will often hear a disgruntled destiny driven person say if we were meant to be together then we wouldn’t have this problem! As a result they tend to give up more quickly and are less likely to work actively on the relationship. Even reasoning that happy well balanced couples also have issues that they have to resolve will often not deter a person from believing that it’s not their soul-mate and therefore not worth the effort to resolve.

18

The best predictor of a good relationship with long lasting potential is how conflict is resolved, people who accept the normality of conflict often fare best in the longer term as they have a realistic outlook on relationships and a ‘can do’ mentality for problem solving. Many successful couples out there may have the appearance of a soul-mate relationship, but, on deeper introspection this is often down to the fact that there has been a lot of compromise by one or both people, and an acceptance of a less than perfect situation, but they want the relationship to sustain. This isn’t ideal when one partner has largely compromised their desires throughout the relationship in order to keep it together, but it may be a choice that they have made for their own reasons. A question I will ask a couple when determining their approach to their relationship ie fate/destiny or reality is ‘do you believe that you are meant to be together, or that you are together as a consequence of the effort that you have put into the relationship? It helps when they hit a difficult patch as their ‘leave’ or ‘solve’ the problem attitudes will

determine their success – it often helps to point out that like most things in life, the more practice you put in the better you get at things! The theory of a soul mate is fascinating, personally, I believe that a partner can become and feel like a soul mate purely as an outcome of the time and effort and practice that is put into a relationship over time. If it’s worth having, it’s worth the work. Fate driven people would see this differently and tend to give up more easily. Soul mate driven people are at times left disappointed, they can believe the fallacy that their soul mate partner can read their mind and just know what they feel or need, this is a recipe for failure, we need to practice communication in all of our relationships and taking for granted that our significant other will ‘just know’ what we think or need will inevitably lead to conflict and disappointment. Men and women operate and process information very differently from each other within a relationship, so ultimately it’s unrealistic to think that we will just understand each other.

Your Body Talks... Listen

The human body has the power to heal itself. Often, in our busy schedules, we resign ourselves to pills, ointments, or at times the scalpel, to remedy the dis-ease within our body. Sometimes we have no choice. But increasingly it is being recognised that we can, and should, take back control of our bodies and our health – be they physical, emotional, spiritual, or environmental challenges. Over the years I have facilitated a growing awareness of the benefits of taking control of the Bodies ability to heal itself. I have been a practic ing BodyTalk practitioner for 6 years – facilitating hundreds of clients to achieve a better quality of life, and helping them overcome the hurdles life throws at us. Relationships at home and in the workplace, depression, illnesses or chronic conditions. Not dealing simply with symptoms, but identifying the deeper emotional

or historic root causes and tackling these head on. How? Through a range of modern and ancient techniques, central of which is BodyTalk. With your permission, I communicates with your body to identify the underlying factors, and facilitate the bodies own healing mechanisms. Creating harmony where once there was dysfunction. Visit website www.capetownbodytalk.co.za to take a look at some of the testimonials. The BodyTalk System was created by Dr. John Veltheim, an Australian chiropractor, acupunc

turist, philosopher and reiki master. The main premise of BodyTalk is that the body has an innate wisdom to heal itself. It is a health care system complex enough to incorporate the latest in western medical research, and the best from many other health care systems. Muscle testing is used to indicate specific health priorities. Body Talk is based on the principal that the body has the ability to heal itself as evidenced by the heal ing process that is automatically initiated when a person breaks a bone or cuts their finger.

Ingredients to look for when buying your beauty products

With so many options of home care skin products, one often spends fortunes on face creams and serums in the hope that they will reverse the signs of ageing in a miraculous way. Promises of a silky soft skin, wrinkle-free face and a lift (equivalent to what plastic surgery provides) usually convince us to spend too much on products that just don’t deliver results.

So should one then rather resort to cheap aqueous cream and coconut oil and spend money on the procedures that actually work? The short answer spend more on procedures with proven effectivity and safety and less on products, but choose a product of which the safety and efficacy are backed by science. In a nutshell: Ingredients that have a proven anti-ageing effect, are stable under normal conditions and penetrate the skin, are what you should consider when buying your potions and lotions! 1.

Sunscreen: Without a good (at least SPF30) sunscreen, it is a waste to spend on any other product or procedure. Make sure you choose a water resistant one for outdoors. I love Heliocare Gelcream which doubles up as a foundation and also gives moisture!

2.

Vitamin A derivatives (eg Retinol): one of the best ingredients to stimulate collagen production for improvement of fine lines and skin texture. Contrary to the belief, it thickens the skin from within the deeper layers. It is

available in different strengths, the highest concentration being a scheduled cream that only a doctor can prescribe. Neostrata Skin Active Retinol+ NAG complex is a good option. 3.

Glycolic acids: these fruit acids take off the superficial layer of the skin and at the same time stimulate collagen production. At various concentrations they are potent anti-ageing ingredients! Neostrata smooth surface daily peel can be used as a “home peel”.

4.

Vitamin C: This wonderful molecule is anti-ageing as well as beneficial in preventing and treating dark spots. It is a very sensitive molecule- exposure to light destroys it. Choose a product for which the stability has been properly tested. Obagi Professional C serum and Skinceuticals Phloretin/CE ferulic are amazing serums.

5.

Co-enzyme Q10 and Resveretrol: These powerful anti-oxidants protect the skin against free radicals that break down collagen prematurely. Skinceuticals Resveretrol is another favourite.

6.

Hyaluronic acid: a wonderful molecule that occurs naturally in the skin and absorbs water. This can plump the skin temporarily and nourishes dehydrated skin. A well hydrated skin creates a perfect environment for new collagen production. Try Skinceuticals’ Hydrating B5 under your moisturizer.

Ask a medical professional that knows about skin, which products will be the best for you. With a limited budget I often advise less expensive washes, toners and moisturisers, but with a serum that has all the “good stuff”!
