EXPERT SKIN CARE ADVICE FOR BRIDES ON THEIR WEDDING DAY The summer wedding season is in full swing. Every bride wants to look their best on their big day. Especially when it comes to their skin. But how do you get that beautiful, glowing skin? It’s easy. Ask an expert!
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A BRIDE TO COME IN TO START HER SKINCARE PROGRAM BEFORE THE BIG DAY? There are two types of brides; the planners who come in the day after they get engaged, wanting top-to-toe mega programmes - and the panickers who arrive with just weeks to spare and want miracles……at Pulse Dermatology and Laser we can treat both! The best would be to come in for a consultation 3-6 months before the big day so that we can put a program together that covers around 3-6 full skin cycles. This will ensure that you get the most out of your treatments and obtain the best results. However, I do understand that with how busy life can be this is not always possible for all the brides I see and so I have developed treatment that delivers real results within 1 skin cycle (4 weeks), allowing even our last minute brides to have luminous, youthful and radiant skin. WHAT IS YOUR TOP RECOMMENDATION FOR BRIDES THAT WANT THEIR SKIN TO LOOK AWESOME ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Along with a really good SPF- (I love the Mesoestetics Moisturising Sun Protection as it gives the skin a beautiful luminous finish) My number one top tip is to ensure the skins barrier protection is completely healthy and intact. This will enable the skin to balance the oil and water levels so that you look well hydrated and free of pesky pimples. Impaired barrier function leads to an over stressed skin that will not respond to treatment effectively, so we always start our programs with a prepare and repair ethos to ensure that treatments are most effective. WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR PRE WEDDING FACIAL TREATMENT? There are definitely 3 treatments that take centre stage! Firstly , being that we live in cape Town many many brides come in looking to treat unsightly sunspots and broken veins on the face, wanting a more even skin tone without having to wear layers and layers of Foundation. Our PDL laser facial is excellent for this, starting off with a papaya and pineapple enzyme treatment to soften dead skin cells and deep cleanse while still being gentle and followed by a combination of IPL laser and Radiofrequency to address, enlarged pores, pigmentation, thread veins, acne breakouts and fine lines!
Lipodissolve
Next up will be our USP Medfacial, tailor made to each individual bride, this includes a ‘no peel’ peel or Crystal therapy to retexturize the skin , followed by extractions, high end treatment serums and Anti Stress treatment and LED light therapy to heal and repair the skin. Last but not least the MesoGlow, this uses high frequency mesotherapy to infuse a cocktail of vitamins and hyalouronic acid (natures top hydrator)into the Dermis.
WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD WE BE USING ON OUR SKINS AT HOME TO ENSURE THAT OUR SKINS ARE THE HEALTHIEST THEY CAN BE? That’s easy… a good vitamin C and SPF 50+ during the day for brightness and protection and a glycolic treatment for the evenings to smooth texture and unblock pores! AND WHEN IT COMES TO THE BODY… HOW DO WE GET RID OF THE DREADED ORANGE PEEL? We have many cellulite treatments at Pulse Dermatology and Laser but the Rolls Royce is our NIR laser from London, this smooths and lifts making sure our brides feel fully confident in their gorgeous lingerie on the night of their wedding!
Purchase a course of 6 Lipodissolve for R5000 and get 3 x NIR laser Completely FREE!
Total value: R9420!
6
WHAT BODY TREATMENTS WOULD YOU ADVISE FOR FATTY POCKETS ON THE BACK SHOULD THE BRIDE WANT TO WEAR A DRESS EXPOSING HER BACK? We do an excellent treatment called LipoDissolve which involves treating the fatty pockets directly with natural fat burners via techniques using injections. This is done on a weekly basis for 3-6 weeks to get the desired results and really is the next best thing to liposuction.
AND WHAT ABOUT MUM? Our most popular treatment for mother of the bride would either be our lifting NIR face laser that has no downtime but delivers fast results and some ladies also choose to have a little bit more with soft fillers and muscle relaxers, but please remember less is more and we strive to achieve a more natural look rather than looking ‘done’!
DO YOU EVER SEE THE GROOM BEFORE THE WEDDING? Yes of course 40% of our patients are male! Mostly they come in for our state of the art Pain Free Laser Hair removal and also the PDL facial has proven most popular!

Justin Bonello: Addicted to Travel He’s spent much of his life filming in the great outdoors, immersing himself in our countries different cultures, and cooking on the open fire in off the beaten path places. He’s produced and hosted award winning television shows, including five seasons of Cooked, four seasons of the Ultimate Braai Master and he’s somehow still found the time to write seven books. We wanted to find out more about the man behind the legendary fireside skills.
By Danni Thunell Ende What was your first memory of cooking? I must thank my late Dutch grandmother, Liz, for starting me on my food journey. When my parents travelled, or if my mom was working on another Afrikaans movie in the Karoo, Granny would fly in from Pretoria to look after my sister and I. She taught me to make crepes in an old cast iron pan that I still have today. The way to my child’s heart was coated in sugar and cinnamon. When you started off did you envision your own cooking show and 7 recipe books? Not in a million years. I learnt to cook out of the necessity of having to know what to do with nature’s bounty – of being able to cook the fish I caught, the mussels I harvested – and the truth is, I just had an idea for a television show. Little did I know that this little idea would result in 20 something television shows and 7 books (and another in the pipeline). If you’d asked me 20 years ago if this was the path I imagined for myself and what the end game would be – I probably would have told you you’re smoking your socks… If you weren’t doing this, you’d be... Working in conservation and education. Your favourite food hero is... All the everyday cooks who day in and day out prepare meals for their families. Weird how we’ve made rock stars out of chefs, of that gastronomic experience – but don’t celebrate that husband, wife or family that weaves their social fabric through preparing and eating food. How do you balance your busy career with family life? I’m still trying to figure this one out. To my disgust, in the first year of my son’s life, I was away from home
for half of his life… nowadays, I try to take my family on the longer trips. It’s a constant juggling act… and I have to thank my mostly patient wife, Eugenie, for being my rock. What is your ultimate comfort food? Is and will always be a Vongole Bianco. What do you love most about what you do? I love to travel. There’s something that I think has inspired travelers since time immemorial… what’s over the next rise, around the next corner, at the end of the road? And that’s me in a nutshell. I’m addicted to travel. Tell us about your latest initiative introducing gardening into schools. I started an NPC called Neighbourhood Farm. Its primary focus is to grow food, minds and community by nurturing children at neighbourhood schools so that they become the catalyst for change into their communities. Think of it as growing great wholesome food, creating local employment, utilizing renewable energy and giving our teachers real edible educational resources. You can follow the story on FB or at www. neighbourhoodfarm.org If you’re not in front of a fire, what do you do to unwind? Sometime ago I realized I can’t eat grass and ripped up that famous monoculture, the urban lawn. And replaced it with a 100% organic vegetable garden that provides nutrient dense produce on a daily basis for my family. This is where I go to forget, and to remember, and besides, I love the honesty of reaping what I sow and earning my green fingers. Manual labor tends to free up the mind….

The combo gas and wood braai is available in various sizes (1200, 1500, 1800 and 2000) and manufactured from high grade 304 or 316 stainless steel ideally suited for coastal conditions. WHILE PLANNING YOUR WEDDING, REMEMBER TO INCLUDE THE ALL-IMPORTANT ANTENUPTIAL CONTRACT Many couples will spend months planning their wedding, but often one of the most important aspects ofplanning a future together is left until later to finalise. An antenuptial contract is often something that couples do not want to talk about, sometimes even believing they’re setting themselves up to fail – but this is not the case. Drawing up a contract before getting married can be seen as a sign of mutual care for each other’s financial and legal independence, and responsibilities.
Signing an antenuptial contract gives each partner in marriage financial and legal independence. It gives you the power to deal with your own financial decisions and property transactions, without putting your partner at risk.
divided according to what each partner has accrued in the time they were married, in the event death or divorce.
In any person’s life there will be financial ups and downs and an antenuptial contract will protect your partner against insolvency, as each estate remains separate. In the unfortunate event of an insolvency, whatever a spouse has gained cannot be touched to recoup the debt of the other.
Another aspect of financial protection through an antenuptial contract is that on the death of a spouse, the surviving partner’s estate continues as normal and he or she will be able to continue as normal while waiting for the other’s estate to be wound up. In the case of community of property, the whole estate is frozen in that time and the surviving partner can find themselves in a dire financial situation.
Many don’t see a marriage as a business partnership, but it should be seen as such and broached in the same manner. In the time you’re married, you will have accumulated certain wealth, whether in property or other investments, and these should in fairness be
Your family lawyer will be able to assist in drafting the right antenuptial contract for you: and it should be seen as something that must be done before the knot is tied, and not later in life, as this is part of the beginning of your future together.

TIME TO TAKE STOCK This month we interviewed Russell Bird - the Owner and Director of a brand new and exciting company- Cover Your Assets. Russell is a Supply Chain expert, specializing in Audits/Inventory/Procurement/ Logistics and Trade Compliance. He’s worked overseas for the past 27 years for companies such as JP Morgan/Weatherford and Parker Drilling. We wanted to find out more about his new venture.
What motivated you to start Cover Your Assets? I realized that if homeowners experience a loss resulting from fire, theft or natural disaster they would have great difficulty recalling the numerous items in their home. We all saw the shocking pictures of the devastation in Knysna, people lost everything. The majority of whom will struggle trying to recall their possessions never mind getting any pay out from their insurance companies. I realized the impor-tance of documenting homeowner possessions. I spent a lot of time researching how I could best capture (in detail) everything we own and once I was satisfied I had the right tools, I then formed Cover Your Assets (CYA) - the ultimate Inventory solution.
In a nutshell describe CYA service offering. We offer protection and peace of mind. Our professional documentation service provides the home-owner with a complete set of reports containing full details about everything they own along with digital images. In addition, we also include a data backup Flash Drive which includes digital reports and full resolution images. A lot of clients use our software to record any home improvements made - it records all work that has been completed and the supporting paperwork is scanned so homeowners can use it for CGT purposes. Some clients use it to ensure they are covered to the correct value for Insurance purposes - In some cases, Knysna residents found out that their policy was insufficient to meet their needs - sadly this is not unusual as 1 in 3 SA Homes are 30% underinsured. Why can’t people do this themselves? Of course they can but my experience tells me that people tend to be too busy or put it off until it’s too late. We encourage this it and also offer our Basic Software on a CD should people wish to do so it themselves. How do you protect a client’s privacy? A clients Privacy is crucial! CYA insist on a Non - Declaration Agreement (NDA) before we start
a home inventory. No work is started until that is agreed and signed off by both parties. This is vital to ensure that the information we are exposed to will not be shared - we have zero affiliation with any Insurance Companies or Financial Institutions and therefore it is critical for my business to have such an agreement in place to provide clients with that added security. Who would benefit from your service? A lot of our clients are very High Net Worth individuals who want to ensure they have their valuable possessions recorded; some have Art Collections and Jewellery that need to be insured correctly, others are clients who have second homes and rent them out for Holiday Lets and want to ensure their possessions are recorded in the event of damage or loss; others are home owners who have always wanted to record their possessions but just didn’t get the time to do it. What is the cost for the service? The price varies depending on the size of the property and information the client wishes to record. Some clients don’t want the full report service to include Home Improvements etc. and we therefore take the time to explain what’s on offer and then agree the level of information they need and work out the estimate based on the client’s requirements.

OSTEOPATHIC SCAR RELEASE By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“A scar is more than skin deep”
muscles and organs creating restricted movement or altered function in the body. These restrictions not only affect the joint, limb or surrounding area, but they can affect the underlying organs, too. This is because scar tissue has the potential to spread in any direction, including internally, throughout the body resulting in compensation patterns. The same thing happens in the human body when scar tissue forms. Tissue that used to be able to stretch and flex easily now becomes tight and restricted, with limited range of motion. The resulting pull affects everything throughout the body that is even remotely connected to that tissue.
A scar may give the appearance that the body has healed, and whilst the body is efficient at mending itself some scars can be problematic. Scar tissue is never as functional as the original tissue it has replaced. With the exception of very minor lesions. A scar can be as a result of surgery (Caesarean section, appendectomy, cosmetic surgery, joint surgery), an accident or injury (wounding, muscle tears or tendon ruptures), burns, sores, skin conditions or diseases. During the healing process scar tissue and adhesions can be created, causing pulling and tethering to the surrounding tissue (fascia) which encases the
These structural changes can cause pain, nerve impingement, numbness, limited range of motion and flexibility, postural imbalance, muscle weakening and wasting, reduced tissue oxygenation and an increase in potential for future injury. Scar tissue can even act like a dam disturbing drainage of lymphatics and circulation and impacting on our normal physiology and our health. Seeking professional care for health concerns is important to help understand symptoms. Osteopaths work with patients to treat and identify scars and adhesions, helping to decrease pain and try and return the soft tissues to a more functional state. An osteopathic approach to scar tissue and associated adhesions will not only address the area of pain, but they will also assess the overall body function and look at the history and contributing causes to the symptoms that are occurring.
Osteopathic scar tissue release will help manually to unwind, soften and improve a scar. Releasing a scar and adhesion not only works on a physical level but may also help on a psychological level. Osteopaths addressing scar tissue early in its development can help minimize any of the secondary scar tissue problems. Osteopathic scar tissue release is a way of dealing with the long-term complications and pains caused when the fascial matrix is compromised by the tension of scars. During the treatment it is common to feel discomfort as scar tissue adhesions are being broken up and fascial tension released and restored. This process aids to reduce the scars and adhesions once the wound is healed. In some cases, a person’s body does not break down the scar tissue. The adhered tissue continues to spread which can trigger a cascading effect of compensations throughout the body. Releasing the scar aims to improve mobility, diminish complications and decrease pain often associated with scars. When a scar has been released there is no longer a restriction in the flow of energy, blood circulation and lymph drainage. The body can then complete the healing process. *Dr. Guy Ashburner BSc(Hons)Ost(U.K),D.P.O(U.K). Osteopath*

SAVE WATER THIS SUMMER
By: www.perfectgrass.co.za
The Cape has experienced the worst drought since 1904. Herewith some handy tips on saving water in our homes and business. We can all help reduce waste by making small behavioural changes and by choosing more water efficient products.
• • • •
6 litres of water per minute. This is what you can save if you turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. An average washing machine uses about 50 litres of water. So wait until you have a full load of laundry before you use it. A typical dishwasher uses about 13 litres of water per cycle. Steer clear from switching it on – for just a few items. Just a single person uses around 13.6 litres of water every time they flush the toilet. Purchase an energy efficient cistern displacement device – and replace your old one.
•
• •
A bath takes anywhere between 65 and 150 litres of water. Replace some of your bath time with quick showers and when you do bath, recycle the bath water by using it to water the garden. Fix those leaks immediately! A dripping tap can waste up to 15 litres of water per day. Recycle your water by putting a water butt on your drainpipe. This way you can reuse water collected to water your garden or clean your car.
