Space
The Book Lounge and the Fugard Theatre present the annual Open Book Festival, a literary festival with a focus on South African literature in an international context. The festival includes over 150 literary events, featuring over 100 authors over 5 days. Although the events are spread across Cape Town and its surrounds, the hub of the festival takes place at the Fugard Theatre. www.openbookfestival.co.za
The Artscape Theatre presents Space, a performance that talks to the forced removals and how those affected still yearn for the land they once occupied. They long for this unrestricted space which allowed them to be free and to be themselves. Pizza and Pasta Festival
The Wizard of Oz Musical
It’s Cape Town’s inaugural Pizza and Pasta Festival, showcasing the city’s favourite pizza and pasta eateries and food trucks. Jo- Ann Strauss: Media entrepreneur and international speaker By Danni Thunell Ende
She’s one of South Africa’s most recognizable faces. She’s just been announced as the first South African face of Lufthansa and has also MC’ed various charity events for members of royal families. She serves on the advisory board of Africa’s leading business school as well as Media24 and M&C Saatchi Abel. She works with UNICEF and Stop Hunger Now to protect the most vulnerable members of society. She is also the proud mother of two. She graduated from Stellenbosch University with a B.Comm (Law) degree after winning Miss South Africa in 2000 and went on to present “Pasella” and then “Top Billing”. I don’t have space to list her many other accolades and hope I’ve made it clear why she was the perfect inspiration for our Spring edition. What do you love most about what you do? I love the flexibility that my work affords me – the fact that I have a chance to have days when I’m just “mom-ing” and the fact that I might be doing 20-hour days on some days and on other days I’m doing what I love. It is a blessing to be able to run one’s own business and to work on projects which you enjoy and empower others. If you weren’t doing this you’d be doing… I’d probably be a doctor, but now I’ve married one, so I’m living my alternate life vicariously through him. I always wanted to go into the medical field but realise that my career choice now offers me a bit more freedom. What has been your biggest career highlight? Working on the biggest German TV channel during 2010 in a language which I learnt in a few months and broadcasting live to over 20 million viewers. Also, producing and hosting my own primetime TV show in 2012 (called Glambition) and then my projects #SocialStar and Modern Mommy. I get a chance to help others fulfil their own dreams and aspirations and that is really rewarding. #SocialStar launches on the 1st of September and will be a chance to help youngsters make a career out of Social Media. It’s the fourth time we are running it on www.socialstar.me and we’ve had millions of social media interactions. We are off to Mauritius and will experience the island in a very authentic way.
What have you found most challenging about juggling work with parenthood? The working mom guilt is a constant trip you have to try and get to grips with. You have to be fully present where you are – whether at work or when you’re with your family. I’m getting better at putting my phone out of my range of site when doing family time.
Tell us something about yourself our readers would be unlikely to know. Uhmmm… I was at Theatre on the Bay for the Silwerskermfees and saw one of the venues is named Bill Flynn and got nostalgic. I was his runner-up in Big Brother Celebrity in 2002 where we raised over R2 million for charities in one week. I did shower hour in bikinis ;-)
Do you have one piece of sage advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? For aspiring mompreneurs, I want to quote Sheryl Sandberg “The most important career choice you’ll make is who you marry. I have an awesome husband, and we’re 50/50.” For entrepreneurs in general – “Opportunity dances with those who are already on the dance floor.” H.Jackson Brown Junior The top 3 beauty products you couldn’t live without? HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“Research shows that manual therapy such as osteopathy can relieve pain, increase flexibility and improve quality of life for people with osteoarthritis” - (Alshami, 2014), (Romeo et al. 2013), (Abbott et al. 2013), (Hoeksma et al. 2004) tion acts as a shock absorber. Damage to this cartilage causes friction which makes movement more difficult, leading to pain, stiffness and inflammation.
As a weight bearing joint the hip is commonly affected by hip osteoarthritis. Symptoms of osteoarthritis of the hip include local pain and stiffness (particularly in the morning) that may refer to the groin, thigh, buttocks, or knee. Pain is worse with activity and better with rest. The hip becomes more inflamed and mobility in the joint is lost. The muscles around the joint become weak as well lose muscle mass and this increases the likelihood of a limp. Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint condition which occurs because the smooth cartilage that lines the hip joint wears down over time, leaving the bone beneath exposed to increased load bearing and rubbing of the joint surfaces. Cartilage is a material that lines bony surfaces in joints. It helps prevent fric-
Over time, the cartilage erodes and bony spurs (osteophytes) develop, which further exacerbates these symptoms. Pain in hip OA occurs because bony surface make contact with one another after the cartilage has gradually degraded and no longer offer protection. There is a reduction in the production of synovial fluid (joint lubricator and nourishment) and the surrounding ligaments shorten. Therefore in Osteoarthritis the space within the joints narrows resulting in loss of joint function and the pain is associated with inflammation in surrounding soft tissue. Hip osteoarthritis commonly occurs as part of the aging process but can be accelerated by injury (repetitive stress injuries from inappropriate sports) or trauma to a joint or chronic increased loading or pressure, and malalignment of the lower extremity. A thorough examination by a professional who understands body mechanics, such as an Osteopath, can help in identify the root cause of the symptoms and therefore advise about the most appropriate approach to treatment. Much of the pain is often down to the body’s reaction to the wear and tear and

this may lead to inflammation, muscle spasm and inevitably, pain. Osteopaths aim to give you a full diagnosis for this chronic pain, regardless of the cause by using orthopaedic test which can define if you are loosing range of motion. A positive test will prompt an osteopath to refer for X-ray of the hip. An osteopath will release muscle tension around the affected joint, improve the range of movement and encourage better joint health by promoting blood and lymph flow to and from the area. This will reduce pain and inflammation and increase flexibility. Osteopaths can use a variety of techniques to achieve this, depending on the individual’s situation. These include gentle articulation, massage, stretch and joint mobilisation. They will also be able to advise on strengthening and stretching exercises to do at home. Symptoms can be managed using osteopathy as a method of reducing symptoms. This can be combined with exercise programs, weight loss (in order to reduce stress) and, if required analgesia and anti-inflammatories under your GP’s guidance. Advanced OA in the hip joint may require replacement surgery. There is no Osteoarthritis cure. The best Osteoarthritis treatment is prevention.
