NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS? LINDY HIBBARD:
BE YOUR BIGGEST BRAND AMBASSADOR!
January 2019 15 000 Copies
Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want
ED’S LETTER It’s a brand-new year and my biggest wish
for our readers is that you managed to take
some time off to spend with your loved ones
this festive season. January is often a time of
reflection and when we tend to look back over the past year and judge our successes and
failures. We then set a list of sometimes unobtainable “pie in the sky” resolutions, that are bound to trip us up, and come March (when
we’ve inevitably given up on them) infuse us
with a sense of failure for not having adhered to them. I agree with our contributor, Denise Levy, when she advises us to only look for
the positives when evaluating the past year and focus on all the joy we’ve created, and
good times spent with loved ones. I think goal setting is an admirable endeavour so long as
we are not too hard on ourselves and perhaps break our goals into bite size chunks so that
we can give ourselves a pat on the back when we reach them. Wishing all our clients and
readers a wonderful 2019. May this year be a
time to shine, to give back to those around us

LINDY HIBBARD: BE YOUR BIGGEST BRAND AMBASSADOR
By Danni Thunell Ende
Lindy Hibbard, a household name in the Western Cape, is celebrating 13 years in the radio industry. Born and raised in Durbanville, Cape Town, she co-hosts Smile Breakfast with Bobby Brown and Lindy Hibbard on Smile 90.4FM every weekday 06h00 am to 09h00 am. When not on radio, the energetic radio personality is also a voice-over artist, emcee, guest speaker, Ambassador of Hope for the Sunflower Fund, as well as a self-professed fitness fanatic and animal lover. A born achiever we hope she’s an inspiration for us all as we start a brand-new year. When did you discover your love for radio? When I was about ten years old, I got a pink radio / cassette player. It was my pride and joy! I listened to the radio every day and remember thinking to myself that the presenters sounded like they were having so much fun. It was there and then that I decided I was going to study radio broadcasting when I finished school. While completing my BA at UCT I got my first radio gig on UCT radio.
It was exhilarating, and I immediately knew that this was what I was supposed to do. What is your favourite part of the job? I have the opportunity to offer people light and happiness in their day and it’s something I’ll never take for granted. When not on air, how do you spend your time? I’m also a voice artist, so I spend quite a bit of time in studio doing voice overs for TV shows and radio ads. I also enjoy cooking and exercising and spending time with friends and family which is a big priority for me. What do you love most about Summer in Cape Town? Watching the sun rise from the top of Signal Hill and watching the sun set from Clifton 4th Beach. How do you stay in such great shape? It’s important for me to keep my mind, body and soul healthy, so you’ll find me either doing a yoga class or a high intensity workout at F45 Camps Bay or experimenting with healthy recipes in the kitchen.
What cause is closest to your heart? Some blood diseases like leukaemia, bone marrow failure or sickle-cell anaemia need to be treated with a bone marrow transplant. Sadly, the odds of finding a donor is 1 in 100 000. I work with the amazing team at The Sunflower Fund to raise awareness about the importance of becoming a blood stem cell donor and giving the gift of hope. Registering as a donor is one of the most important things I’ve ever done. What has been your proudest career achievement? Co-hosting Smile Breakfast on Smile 90.4FM. The last four years have been an absolute dream come true and I’m so grateful to wake up every day and do a job I love. What advice do you have for aspiring female entrepreneurs? Be patient while working on your skill set. Don’t belittle your small achievements. Be your biggest brand ambassador and remember that everything happens at the time it’s meant to. Would you consider a career in TV? Absolutely!

THE IMPORTANCE OF SIMPLE PLANNING Perhaps you too were one of the lucky ones that did not get diagnosed with cancer last year. In 2018, approximately 17,000,000 people worldwide were diagnosed with the illness and it is suggested that two out of three people born after 1965 will, during the course of their lifetime, get some form of cancer. The statistics, although scary, aren’t as daunting as we think given that with modern day medicine and healthier lifestyle choices many cancers are treatable these days with less and less being diagnosed as terminal each year. That said, one thing we can be almost certain of is that most forms of treatment tend to be unpleasant and a painful experience sometimes leading many people to take time off work to rest, on average 14 months but in some cases much longer. Many people living and working in South Africa have medical aid which is key to ensuring that expensive cancer treatment would be covered. However, if you had to stop working today, for 14 months or longer, how long would you survive financially? • •

As a father of a beautiful six year old daughter, Gracie-Rose, I find it staggering that so many people aged 30 – 60 go to work every day without having income protection insurance in place in the event of illness or disability. I am covered for R10 000 000 at a cost of R2000 per month giving me peace of mind that should the dreaded words “Mr Stockton you have cancer” ever be uttered I know I won’t have the added stress of worrying about money through what would be an already stressful time. My insurance would pay out within two weeks of diagnosis as a lump sum into my bank account. If you are one of the many that do not have this in place, then make it your 2019 resolution to make sure you do. I write this content not to scare anyone but purely to stress the importance of how SIMPLE planning can be so effective and how critical illness/in-
come protection insurance is such a necessity in the modern world we live in. If you wish to receive a FREE quote feel free to email greg.stockton@carrick-wealth.com with the title QUOTEME and I will be in touch.

IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A CONTINGENCY FUND AVAILABLE TO COVER ANY UNFORESEEN COSTS WHEN BUYING A HOME Buying a home is an expensive exercise, not only in the price of the property itself but also with regards to the transfer and bond registration costs involved. This can be a stressful time for buyers, and it helps to budget very carefully beforehand, to allow for certain unforeseen costs that might arise while the transfer is being registered, says Charlene Joubert of Henkes Joubert Barry Inc. Attorneys and Conveyancers. Transfer and bond costs, Deeds Office and transfer duty fees are all calculated according to the price of the property being purchased, and a schedule is available from the conveyancer as to what will be payable by the buyer. In addition, one needs to budget for disbursements such as telephone calls made by the conveyancer’s team, printing, FICA requirements, and other general costs incurred to complete registration of transfer.
fee, however, which is a separate amount calculated according to the bond amount. Sellers, too, might have to budget for additional costs: •
Some transfers are slightly more complicated, where there are additional actions to be carried out which will incur extra costs and will be added to the buyer’s invoice by the conveyancer.
If the title deed is lost, the conveyancer will need to apply for a copy, which the seller must pay for. The copy is needed as this will be lodged with the transfer documents. This might cost approximately R3 500.
•
• If the unit bought is in a sectional title or HOA complex, the conveyancer will prepay an amount to the body corporate or HOA to cover the cost of the levy clearance certificate and levies due for the first month from date of registration of the transfer as well as the electricity deposit and other additional fees (security or garden fees, for example), and provision will be made to cover approximately R4 000.
If there are any mistakes on the title deed, such as a spelling errors or incorrect digits on the identity number, for example, this will have to be corrected first and will cost roughly R2 500, for the seller’s account.
• Sometimes a general power of attorney is granted to a third party where the seller is overseas or not able to be present to sign the necessary documents. This will cost from R2 000 to R3 000 and the cost would include authentication as well as being lodged with the Deeds Office.
• Insurance certificate (in the case of a sectional title unit). While the complex as a whole will be insured under one policy, the conveyancer needs to show that the unit being sold has an active policy over it and will request one from the insurance broker. This will cost from R750 to R1 500 (this amount is only applicable where a bond is being registered over the property). • Notarial Deed of Cession. This fee cannot be anticipated beforehand and will only become prevalent once the transfer is in process. This is needed where there is a separate title deed for a garage or garden (as an exclusive use area) in a sectional title complex. If this applies, then the conveyancer will charge for the extra documents required and will add approximately R2 500 to R 4 000 to the amount payable by the buyer. • Bond registration initiation fees. The bank will charge roughly R6 000 to value the property and grant the bond. This is not the bond registration
• Sellers often do not realise that they might have to budget for repair work on their home’s electrical and plumbing system in order to get a compliance certificate, and these costs should be factored in. Sellers must also remember that the bond on their current property needs to be cancelled, giving the bank three months’ notice of the intention to cancel so as to avoid penalties. The conveyancing attorney can assist by notifying the bank on the seller’s behalf and monitoring the notice period. These fees will vary slightly from case to case, but an estimated extra budgeted amount should be put aside by buyers and sellers alike, so that they are not caught short and have to worry about the added amounts payable, says Joubert. For further information contact Charlene Joubert on 083 258 1343 or email charlene@henkesjoubertbarry.co.za.

INTIMACY AND ITS MANY FORMS Not surprisingly, when one works with couples the tricky subject of intimacy regularly pops up. People will speak of a lack of intimacy or awkwardness around intimacy, or ‘where has it gone’, as for some it seems to be lost. Following on from last month’s article on ‘admiration’ I am now looking at the role that intimacy plays in a relationship. Understanding that intimacy comes in a number of forms may help a struggling couple build upon what they already have. When we talk about being intimate in a romantic relationship, we often relate it to sexual intimacy. But sex is just one form of intimacy. The reality is that intimacy is not just sexual, it is the way that we connect with and are seen by our partners, and those ‘other’ forms can be the embodiment of a more fulfilled life together. Emotional Intimacy This type of intimacy is feeling one has a true ‘go to’ guy or girl in a partner. It is someone you trust and feel safe with and with whom to share yourself, be vulnerable and just ‘be yourself’. Some suggested reading on this matter includes John Gottman’s “Sound Relationship House” which explains the seven essential components
for healthy relationships. One of these is ‘building love maps’, which details how well we know our partner’s psychological worlds, their history, hopes, concerns and joys. Being honest with oneself when things are a bit tough in a relationship is also necessary. Of course one’s partner may have issues negatively impacting the relationship, but what about how you feel? When one introspects and look at what walls or barriers have been put up, or how much anger for instance we may be holding onto, it could be that these factors are blocks or inhibitors to truly connecting with one other. Intellectual Intimacy Sometimes people will say to me that they really love the mind of their partner and that they are fascinated with how they think. Once again this brings us back to last month’s article on ‘admiration’. When two minds meet and share their thoughts about life or anything for that matter, we are stimulated by each other creating intellectual intimacy which reinforces connection. Physical Intimacy Don’t confuse physical intimacy with sexual intimacy. It’s essentially being affectionate with each other, which can include everything from hugging to holding hands to kissing to cuddling on the couch.
Again, if you’re feeling a ‘disconnect’ here, be mindful and reflect on the possibility that perhaps you’re sending out the wrong message when a partner tries to connect. Have you made your desires known or has laziness crept in to the relationship? Intimacy through shared Experiences Couples don’t have to live in each other’s pockets 24/7 to be close! It is, however, so important to share experiences with one another without any distractions, a good example of which being a mobile phone which, sadly, has been one of the biggest causes of a lack of connection between couples that I have seen in my practice this year. Spiritual Intimacy Spiritual intimacy varies between couples, if you share a faith this can promote intimacy, but a spiritual connection can also be achieved just by a soulful walk on the beach together. Intimacy leads to connection and if you’re able to be open and honest with each other, to listen to what your partner is saying and to try to understand where they’re coming from, then you’re already nurturing a deeper connection and halfway there to enjoying a truly happy, fulfilled and successful relationship.

MYOFASCIAL INNER KNEE PAIN AND STIFFNESS By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“Osteopathy is based on the perfection of nature’s work. When all parts of the human body are in line we have health. When they are not the effect is disease. When the parts are readjusted disease gives place to health. The work of the Osteopath is to adjust the body from the abnormal to the normal; then the abnormal condition gives place to the normal and health is the result of the normal condition.” A. T. Still.” - Philosophy of Osteopathy knee where several low inner thigh, hamstring and calf muscles connect.
Tightness in the inner knee can interfere with simple tasks like walking and sitting as well as functioning at an optimal level for sport. Inner knee tightness or stiffness in the knee can be caused by injuries, muscle imbalance, poor biomechanics (turned out hips, flat feet etc), inappropriate exercise, poor movement habits or degenerative changes to the knee or hip. Fast walking is also considered a factor that causes pain in patients suffering from knee disorders. One of the causes of medial knee pain and/or stiffness can involve increased muscle and fascial tension of one leg which can cause a pelvic tilt and compensatory tightening of other muscles such as the gluteal muscles (glutes). Adhesions and scar tissue from a previous ankle sprain (even if it happened years ago), can lead to gait changes resulting in another set of problems. These changes can contribute to tight fascia at this junction of the
FIT MEALS CAPE
The inner thigh muscles and hip adductors (adductors longus, brevis and magnus, and the pectineus and gracilis), bring the leg back to the midline. When these muscles are used properly they support healthy knee functioning. Gracilis (a hip adductor), shares a tendon with the sartorius (a hip flexor) and the semitendinosus (an inner hamstring muscle). The tendon is called the pes anserinus and it attaches to the shin bone at the inner knee. Overuse of these three muscles (usually from cycling or running) can cause the tendon to become tender and inflamed resulting in pain at the inner knee. Knee pain is often caused or aggravated by weakness or tightness in the muscles and tendons that connect to the knees—specifically, the adductors, glutes, hamstrings, calves and quads. Thigh muscles may become tight due to the extended amount of time spent in the seated position during the workday or after injury or a period of inactivity and immobilisation. Many of the muscles which connect at the knee start at the hip. It is therefore very important to keep one’s hips loose and strong just as nature intended, by doing squats. The squat should be a hip-dominant exercise and not a knee-dominant exercise to reduce the load on the knee. Muscles need to be strong and
supple enough to support the knee through a full range of motion and thus strength deficits can cause a decrease in joint mobility. Exercise should only be performed using the correct form and only through a pain-free range of movement. Osteopaths adopt a holistic approach to the body and start the consultation with a client establishing a thorough case history. An osteopath will then do an examination to assess the extent of a client’s knee pain. This information helps the osteopath to diagnose which joints, ligaments and muscles are inflamed and the type of biomechanical imbalance that may be present. The osteopath addresses the joint, ligament and muscle imbalances of the knee, as well as looking for other compensations taking place from the ankle and feet up to the hip and lower back that may be contributing to the knee pain being experienced. There are many reasons the inner knee area can get tight or knotted up and for any solution to be truly lasting, the osteopath would need to discover the root cause and address it through osteopathic diagnosis and treatment. Osteopathic treatment may involve myofascial release, gentle soft tissue massage, articulation, stretching and manipulation as well as postural and exercise advice.

SPOTLIGHT ON SPOTS
What is Hyperpigmentation? An excess of brown pigment in the skin. There are various sub-types of Hyperpigmentation. The small round, flat, dark areas commonly found on the face, chest and back of the hands are what we call Solar Lentigines or sun freckles. Another type is melasma, commonly seen in women due to hormonal influences and often over the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. Some dark spots, especially the ones that are raised above the skin, are called nevi or moles and are often genetic. These are clusters of cells that make the pigment and are strictly speaking not classified as hyperpigmentation. Cancerous
growths like melanomas can also present as dark spots.
Fractional laser can be used for most types of hyperpigmentation.
Prevention is Key The first step in combatting hyperpigmentation is sun protection. Always choose a good quality broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply throughout the day. Use it 365 days of the year. A hat and protective clothing are important. Sun protection can save lives as it is the best way to help prevent most skin cancers.
Chemical peels in various strengths can help by chemically removing the top layers of the skin.
How can Hyperpigmentation be treated? The bad news is that hyperpigmentation is a chronic problem and will always recur. The good news- there are many effective treatment and maintenance options that can lighten dark spots.
Other ingredients: A variety of skin care products contain Arbutin, Vitamin C, Kojic Acid and other ingredients that can have a skin lightening effect. Unfortunately many people spend fortunes on these beauty products and usually only get minimal results.
Hydroquinone is a prescription ointment and acts as a bleaching agent. This is usually the first line treatment. It should only be used for about four months and then stopped. It can make the skin sensitive to the sun, so care should be taken when using it.
The best advice speak to a health care professional to get the right treatment option for you.
Dermabration mechanically removes the top layers of the skin. Cryotherapy (Liquid Nitrogen) destroys cells and pigment by “freezing them. It is usually used for spots, moles and skin tags.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a very effective option for Hyperpigmentation. It should not be used to treat melasma, as it can worsen the condition.

WHY SET UNACHIEVABLE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?
It’s that time of year again when we look back over the past year and judge our performance, mostly critically, and usually with disappointment, from unrealistic goals set. We look at all the things we didn’t do, the items on our never-ending to-do lists that have not yet been crossed off, and we never seem to be satisfied with our progress. What pressure to start the New Year with! Why do we do this to ourselves? And then of course, we make up a brand-new list of unachievable New Year’s resolutions and start the cycle all over again. Why? Let’s make a change this year and shake things up a bit. Let’s look only for the positive, the difference we have made in the lives of others, the joy we have created, and the good times spent with family and friends. I truly believe that this is the way we need to approach 2019, proudly, patting our own backs, and shining our light unashamedly brightly. We
are where we are, and that is it. From here, there is only one way, and that is forward. What is the point of looking back? So, I implore you to stand tall, acknowledge your strengths, neither ‘tone it down’ nor ‘play it small’ and be seen for who you truly are. I want to acknowledge my amazing teams and the incredible people who support my many dreams and visions and help me to make them a reality. Yes, I know, they may roll their eyes from time to time and think: ‘Oh no, here she goes again!’ (I’m a Mom remember, we see and know everything!), but I do feel this is done with a sense of pride and a touch of admiration, as my team wonder if I’m ever going to slow down. Well here’s the thing, I’m not going to. Not for a while anyway- I may well speed up a bit. I want to be more deliberate with my time and with each precious day. As time passes, I feel that there is still so much I want to do and there are so many experiences I want to include in my life.
I realise that in this phase of my life, one of the only things that matters is growth, and this is in every area of my life; growth in my relationships, in the depth of my love for my family and friends; growth in the bond with each and every person in my teams; growth in the understanding of myself, my purpose and my connection; and most importantly the growth of bringing joy into the lives of others in every way that I can. So to my chosen ‘tribe’, my darling husband Gav, my rock, to my gorgeous kids, Kia and Josh, to my guys at Ginger and Lime, Beach House Collection and Cape Town Productions, as well as all the others in the support roles, and you know who you are, I salute you for being such an incredibly important part of my life, for always having my back and for allowing me to shine my light. I am determined that this New Year will be the brightest ever, so I hope you are ready, this rocket is about to launch!
