I hope all the families reading this managed to take some time off these school holidays. We’re in the thick of winter and rain has been plentiful. I’m not sure we’re out of the hot water yet but things are certainly looking up. Perspective is such an important thing. As is taking a positive approach. Our cover star and Olympic gold medallist Cameron, proves that with hard work, dedication and a love of what we do- anything is possible. He openly talks about his struggle with ADHD as a child and how he used swimming to channel his hyperactivity. A classic example of taking a negative and turning it into a positive. With ADHD being as prevalent amongst our youth as it’s ever been, this topic has never been more relevant. Whatever your views on the matter, his humility despite his enormous achievements is extremely encouraging. What really resonated with me were his views on team work. How important it is to create a “village” in whatever we do and support one another- an inspiring message for us as South Africans. Lastly, winter is a great time for pampering ourselves. STRENGTHEN THE CHANCES OF GETTING YOUR OFFER ON THAT PROPERTY ACCEPTED
When a person decides it’s time to purchase a home for himself, it is often an emotional decision, one that starts with a “feel” of wanting to own something for himself. When he looks for a property, it will be the one that he feels most at home in that he will put in an offer on, sometimes forgetting to do a fair bit of practical legwork beforehand regarding property ownership. “When putting in an offer to purchase a property, the first thing to consider is whether you’re putting in the best possible offer you can,” says Rene Barry, partner at Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys. Putting in the best possible offer means: the market related value of the home has been matched, the buyer is offering the full amount that he can afford, and he has his finances in order and strengthened his position by obtaining pre-approval from his bank before he has started looking for a property. When assessing one’s financial situation on the full amount that one can afford, all the expenses pertaining to buying that property have to be taken into account. Apart from the monthly bond repayments, there are other expenses that will affect the buyer a great deal, such as insurance, rates, water and electricity, levies if
seller accepting the deal. When a deposit is offered, however, it must be cash available immediately, not money that will take days or weeks to be available, such as funds that are in fixed accounts or overseas funds, as this can cause delays which could sway the seller into rejecting or waiting for a better offer, she advises.
living in a sectional title or Home Owners’ Association run scheme, maintenance on the property and possible increases in interest rates or increases for services. “In other words, when establishing affordability, it’s not just the bond repayment, it’s whether you have enough leeway and extra money each month to cover any unforeseen expenses as well as the full upkeep and running of your home,” says Barry.
“If all this is established beforehand, the buyer’s offer will stand a high chance of being accepted, as the seller’s needs will have been met without a lot of negotiation or complications. Most property sellers would like their home to sell in a short time with minimum fuss and will welcome a buyer who has everything in order before submitting an offer,” says Barry.
Once the buyer has established that he can wholly afford the property he is putting in an offer on, he should then ensure he has cash put aside for the transfer fees, transfer duty, bond registration fees, and a sizeable deposit on the property (if he intends on putting down a deposit). Putting a deposit down conveys a message of seriousness about buying, and strengthens the chances of the ATTORNEYS . CONVEYANCERS . NOTARIES

GO LUCKY FREE RANGE EGGS
What inspired you to start your own business? My twin daughters started school and all of a sudden I had time on my hands which I haven’t had in two years. During my time as a stay at home mom, I became very aware of what I gave my children to eat. I wanted to give them the absolute best hormone free, free range food that I could find but realised very quickly that it was harder and more expensive than I had anticipated. A friend of ours, Kyle Samson started Go Lucky Free Range and sells eggs in bulk to some of Cape Town’s best Hotels, Bakeries and restaurants. After a dinner at our house there was a clear alignment of the collective thinking, and we agreed to start GoLucky Easy Living as a proof of concept to test the new model of supplying eggs and other Fresh perishables directly to homes at a better price than can be bought at retail. We were overwhelmed with the positive response from people here in the bay area, and Go Lucky Easy Living ‘Hout Bay’ was born and is going well.
Sandra van Niekerk 073 083 4113 sandra@golucky.co.za www.golucky.co.za 10
Tell us a little bit about your company? I deliver the Freshest free-range eggs and freshly frozen chicken to your door directly from the farm in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Our current product range consists of: Large free-range Eggs, 1,5kg Freshly Frozen Whole Chicken, 1,3kg Freshly Frozen Whole Chicken, 1kg Freshly Frozen Chicken Breast Fillets and 1,2kg Freshly Frozen Chicken Livers. We are based in Hout Bay and deliver to the Atlantic Seaboard and Southern suburbs of Cape Town. We are slowly but surely growing our product range and delivery areas and will keep our customers posted as we grow. In a nut shell describe the difference between normal and free-range chicken. A ‘normal chicken’ or battery chicken does not have a happy life at all. They are kept in a confined space and pumped full of hormones and antibiotics to produce as many eggs as possible. Free-range chickens roam around freely and live happier lives. Our chickens sleep and lay in a barn but spend their days outside in the sun as God intended. Will the eggs be fresh? We get deliveries directly from the farm 3 times a week. By the time I delivery the eggs to you
they will be 2 or 3 days old at the most. It is very difficult to find eggs this fresh in any shop. Why do you freeze the chickens? As Go Lucky Easy Living is still a small home-based business, we don’t as yet have the logistics to handle fresh chicken. As the business grows this will change. Why would someone buy from you rather than a super market? Convenience is key! I deliver to your door when it suits you. Most of my customers have a standing weekly / bi weekly order. It is one less thing to worry about and you are assured that you get the freshest possible stock that is free-range certified directly from the farm. Please visit our website: www.golucky.co.za and/or contact Sandra at 0730834113 to place orders for same / next day delivery.

CAMERON VAN DER BURGH FIND WHAT YOU REALLY LOVE
By: Danni Thunell Ende
This inspiring local celebrity will hopefully be a huge inspiration to us all. He’s an Olympic gold medallist and humble to boot! We caught up with him to see what the future entails… How did your journey with Swimming begin? I began swimming because I had ADHD and I picked up sports as an alternative form of medication to Ritalin. I felt swimming was the best fit for me as I could channel all my hyperactivity into something productive. It just grew from strength to strength. I really enjoy the sport- it’s a form of meditation for me and still to this day- if I haven’t done some exercise during the day, I find it difficult to concentrate What has been your proudest career achievement? My proudest career achievement would be Olympic gold 2012 with the world record. What does the future entail for you? I’m heavily involved and very excited about business. I’m stepping away from sport and I don’t think I could be a coach. I don’t want swimming to define the rest of my life. Moving forward there are a lot of different opportunities and exciting projects that I’m involved with. What advice would you give to other aspiring athletes? You need to find what you really love. There will be a lot of times that it tests your will power to get up and train hard and make the sacrifice and commitment needed. If you don’t really love what you’re doing you’re never going to make it past those hard parts of your career. What/who inspires you to succeed? To be the best in the history of my own body. You only have one life and one chance. You’re never going to be able to relive that moment again and each time you get to a competition you’re never going to get another chance to race in that again. It’s always inspiring to train
12
as hard as I can. To be prepared and whatever happens, happens! I’m always proud of what I’ve achieved (even if it’s a silver medal) if I know that I put all the hard work in that I could possibly have done at that time. How do you handle the pressure of being a national role model? There is pressure in being a role model but it’s also such a privilege. I look back at all the people that inspired me when I was younger and what it meant to me when they performed well. It’s about understanding that these kids are watching you and looking up to you and that small things that you do can shape their life and the direction of their careers, so you’ve always got to be careful what you say and do. Again- it’s such a privilege to be in that position- it’s always a blessing, never a burden. What do you do to unwind? I love to read. I do a lot of reading on the financial markets- it keeps my mind active. I need mental stimulation to keep me happy and just training and swimming all the time would make me too bland and not motivated to do other things and get inspiration from other parts of the world. What legacy would you like to leave behind? Swimming is such an individual sport that I’ve always tried to make sure that everyone is a committed team member and able to invest in one another. At the Commonwealth Games one of my proudest moments was to make sure that each athlete had support and that everyone knew what everyone else was racing on different days and was there to support one another. It makes a big difference as an individual athlete to get up on the blocks and
hear your whole team in the crowd supporting you. Nationally- it’s being able to have uplifted swimming and hopefully inspired some kids to take up sport and be proactive and give themselves a chance aside of medication in their life. I’m a big fan of this approach. Tell us a lesser known fact about yourself? Michael Phelps and myself are the only two athletes in the world to break 3 world records in 24 hours. It’s something I’m very proud of and its great to share that amazing feat with one of the best athletes in the world.

AQ SKIN SOLUTIONS ADVANCED HAIR COMPLEX… NOW AVAILABLE WITH AESTHETIC DR’S IN SOUTH AFRICA
By Amy Bowie
How does AQ Growth Factor Advanced Hair Complex work?
Like every part of our bodies time and modern day life can take its toll on our scalp causing it to become unhealthy and not function properly. This can lead to or exasperate hair loss. AQ Advanced Hair Complex is a topical hair loss product, specifically designed to nourish the scalp and help to repair damaged hair follicles in order for normal, healthy hair to grow.
Based on AQ’s “GF-Technology”, Advanced Hair Complex has been specifically formulated with a growth factor combination that meets the particular needs of the scalp. The stem cells found in our hair follicles are crucial for hair growth so the ingredients in this concentrated serum have been carefully selected and refined in order to support these vital cells. This restores the scalp to optimum health by repairing damaged hair follicles and stimulating regeneration of active, new hair follicles. The serum can be applied at home but Dr Wakil also performs an inclinic treatment using the Dermastamp or Dermapen which enhances penetration of the product and further stimulates the wound healing response by creating micro-channels in the scalp.

The top 5 aesthetic trends of 2018 The Renewal Institute is always ahead of the curve when it comes to aesthetics. These are the latest trends in health and beauty.
Natural is nicer According to a survey among doctors at the recent Aesthetic & Anti-aging Medicine World Congress held in Monaco, 85% of patients want to look natural. As Skin Renewal’s ethos has always been graceful ageing, we ensure our patients always looked refreshed as opposed re-worked.
wrinkles which is easier than erasing them once they form. Address the root of hair loss Hair loss is the second biggest concern for women between the ages of 35 and 55. There isn’t a single cause so it’s important to determine the underlying issue. This is why The Renewal Institute uses advanced diagnostic testing to help get to the root of the matter.
It’s best to blend Single aesthetic treatments can yield good results but often deliver their best when performed in a combination. For example, micro-needling and peels visibly improve acne scarring, but together their effect is greater than any you’d get from one of the treatments alone. Get an early start An increasing number of younger patients are realising its best to invest in knife-free treatments earlier to prevent something more invasive later on. Collagen-encouraging treatments like Exilis Elite can help prevent Stockist of:
Take sleep seriously Studies have proved that a lack of shut-eye encourages premature ageing and illnesses. This is because a lack of sleep leads to elevated cortisol (the stress hormone) which hampers our ability to heal, leads to weight gain and collagen loss. Fortunately, Sleep Renewal can improve the quality of your pillow time.

BURPEES – BALANCING THE RISK VS. REWARD By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
The Burpee is an exercise that was devised by Royal H. Burpee, an American psychologist in the 1930s. It was originally used as a “Burpees test” which consisted of a short number of “Burpees” executed in rapid succession to measure agility, coordination and strength. This test was utilized by the military to assess soldiers who need is to be able to drop into a firing position and then bounce back up lightning-fast to move to a safe position. Today burpees are used completely differently than they were intended. Instead of being a conditioning test - they are the conditioning. A burpee is essentially a squat that moves quickly to plank position and back all in one movement. Like this: 1. From a standing position, drop down vertically bend
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” over or squat down and place your hands on the floor in front of you, just outside of your feet. 2. In one clean motion, take both feet back, so you are now in a push up position. 3. Drop down to a push-up, until your chest nearly touches the floor. 4. Push up to return to plank position performing a push up. 5. In one clean motion, bring the feet back to between the hands. 6. In one motion, explosively jump into the air, reaching your arms straight overhead.Burpees are not for everyone, they require a pre-requisite level of strength, conditioning and good body mechanics to be used responsibly. If you have poor posture, muscle imbalance, are unfit or carrying extra weight with poor movement patterns, you should only do controlled movement and exercise. Many people perform at least one part of the sequence of movements (comprising a “Burpee”) inappropriately especially if trying to do as many as possible in a short space of time. Chances are that attention to posture will diminish and this could lead to various injuries which may include lower back, knees, shoulders and wrists. If you can’t perform a proper bodyweight squat, hold a plank, do push ups or jump and land properly you should not do the burpee. The burpee serves little purpose and actually a significantly higher risk of injury to the office workers/students and stay-at-home mothers (especially just after pregnancy) who just want to feel fit. Doing any movement or exercise badly may result in injury. Only in a strong, fit and posturally correct individual, can burpees provide a good bodyweight challenge. In
- Jim Rohn
rugby a burpee is sports specific because it is necessary for a rugby player to drop to the ground quickly and/or return to play quickly. Performing a “Burpee,” with weak trunk and hip muscles and stiff upper back and spine may result in undue force on your lower back spinal joints and discs because these muscles that are not adequately conditioned to stabilise such a load and absorb the impacts of this exercise. Dropping too low in the plank position will force your lumbar spine into extension. When the knees are fully bent just prior to thrusting up from a squat position this can place considerable strain on the cartilage and ligaments of the knees — to the point of vulnerability. It’s the dynamic nature of the burpee that demands quick and powerful bending of the knee and low back done repeatedly (certainly more than eight times) that with each repetition moves further away from benefit and closer to imminent injury. An osteopath can identify potentially injurious exercises that others may not. Good biomechanical knowledge allows osteopath to perceive when something, albeit popular, may be hazardous to your spinal and joint health. Muscles tend to adapt and strengthen with exercise, but cartilage, ligaments and tendons tend to become damaged with overuse or improper exercise. As health professionals, osteopaths are able to advise patients on movement and treat any injuries so the participant can help resume and enjoy a fit and active lifestyle.

TEENS AND SCREEN TIME HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? Without adult intervention most teenagers would spend most of their waking hours staring at a screen. Whether they’re texting on their smartphones, watching videos on their laptops or playing ‘real-time’ games online with faceless others, I’m seeing a new wave of issues creeping into Counselling with distressed parents at their wits end. Most youngsters cite that fact that everyone is doing it, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t detrimental consequences. Too Much Screen Time for Teens Is the Norm The majority of screen hours are spent “media multitasking,” meaning teens are using more than one medium at a time—like watching TV and scrolling through social media at the same time. Consequences of Excess Screen Time Too much screen time has been linked to a series of issues. Excessive electronic use raises the risk of depression and obesity, it interferes with social activities and family time, takes a toll on a teen’s mental health and interaction with peers and parents. In contrast, a study published in JAMA Paediatrics found that parental monitoring of a child’s media use can have protective benefits on his academic, social, and physical outcome. Taking the time to strategize on how to set limits is very worth your time (and the resistance you will get) as a parent.
18
Knowing that parents can make a difference for their child through limiting screen use, what can you do? What strategies have helped other parents implement and enforce these rules? Every child is different, and one strategy may work better for one child than another.
Make Screen Time a Privilege One of the ways in which screen time has changed dramatically in recent years is that it’s often felt to be more of a right than a privilege. If you grew up watching the few channels available, you may have felt fortunate to watch a cartoon on Saturday morning. Make it clear that screen time is a privilege not a right. Also, make it clear that the privilege of screen time can be taken away at any time. Teach your teen to do homework and chores FIRST, before he/she turns on and plays on the computer. Role Model Healthy Habits Telling your teen to shut off their electronics while you’re sitting in front of the TV and using your own phone isn’t likely to be effective. Establish Clear Rules about Electronics Most teens, especially younger teens, aren’t mature enough to handle free reign with their electronics, set rules that will keep your teen safe. Examples include having a set time when screens need to be turned off at night and removing screens from bedrooms, and absolutely NO screens at the supper table.
By Janet Winterbourne Encourage Physical Activity Going for a walk, or even doing some chores can ensure your teen will get the physical activity they need. Think of activities you can enjoy as a family, so it seems less like exercising. Create Screen-Free Days Once in a while it can be helpful to have a digital detox and have a screen-free day. Benefits of Limiting Screen Time The studies mentioned earlier tell us some of the hazards of excess screen time and how monitoring and limiting the use of electronics improves outcomes for kids academically, socially, and physically. Yet the benefits of limiting screen time might seem even more real if healthy family interaction is achieved. Bottom Line on Limiting Your Child’s Screen Time It’s clear that excessive screen time is damaging to children academically and from both a physical and psychological aspect. At the same time, screen time is causing our children to miss out on many activities which are important in nurturing the family and friendships. If you need something positive to counteract the resistance you will get from your child, offer up other activities which replace screen time. Electronics and screens aren’t going away anytime in the near future and there are positive aspects to their use as well.
F45 TRAINING Can you shed some light on your own fitness backgrounds? I have come from a finance background, while studying my Masters and working in Sydney I came across F45 Training. Health and Fitness has always been a passion of mine and I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey F45 has taken me in pursing this passion. Tell us about the global craze that is F45 training. F45 is the fastest growing fitness network in the world, with over 1200 Studios in more than 36 countries in under 5 years. F45 specializes in High Intensity Interval Group Training focusing directly on Functional movements. The high intensity style workout combined with the amazing class atmosphere is highly attractive to members globally. What inspired you to own a franchise? I saw how quickly the franchise exploded globally and how fitness crazy South Africans are, we saw it as an amazing opportunity to bring this Brand to the South African shores. In a fitness world with endless options, why F45? F45 is so much more than a gym. The emphasis for us is the community it builds. We are striving to become a place where our members engage not only in the Studio but beyond that into the community.
Describe a typical workout in laymen’s terms. We have over 36 different types of workouts with more than 4000 specific exercises. The workouts are downloaded from F45 Head Office on a daily basis to our televisions in the gym, all F45 franchises globally then perform the same workout on the same day. Our functional training style means we do not utilize Treadmills or other conventional Gym machinery, but rather focus on Body weight, Free weights, rowing machines and Bikes. Our class based training environment allows you to gain the extra motivation from the members training around you with the still feeling the individualized focus of having our trainers leading the session. We ensure you will never repeat the same workout twice. What is your vision for expanding the brand in SA? I am currently looking to expand nationally in the next few months, we have locations scouted in Johannesburg, Durban and Durbanville with roll-out expected late 2018/ early 2019. What makes it different to a regular gym session? All our members can agree that there is no workout like F45 on the market in South Africa. The HIIT style training combined with easy to see Television screens displaying the specific movements result in a workout that is suited to all fitness levels. - by Marc Train

ANOTHER ANTIBIOTIC WINTER LOOMS UNLESS DECISIVE ACTION IS TAKEN “If you have been diagnosed with Strep throat, Tuberculosis or whooping cough then antibiotics is the right course of action, while the common cold, flu and sore throat won’t require antibiotics. Most colds and flu go away on their own after a few days of rest and adequate fluid intake, and there are plenty of overthe-counter medications that can be taken to relieve symptoms instead of resorting to antibiotics as a firstline treatment option,” assures Blackmore.
Despite numerous public health campaigns aimed at reducing unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics, these medications continue to be prescribed at startlingly high rates and is set to surge again this winter as we enter the colds and flu season. In a national survey conducted by Pharma Dynamics – a responsible provider of colds and flu medication – more than 80% of South African doctors said patients pressurise them into prescribing antibiotics. Annemarie Blackmore, Antimicrobial Product Manager at Pharma Dynamics says every time a doctor prescribes or a patient demands an antibiotic purely based on symptoms, rather than a fool-proof diagnostic test, the spread of antibiotic resistance increases. “One of the biggest culprits in the rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the incorrect use of antibiotics. Some patients start off by taking their antibiotics as prescribed, but as symptoms abate, they discontinue use halfway through the course, which leads to resistance. In some instances, antibiotics are
also shared among family members, without them realising the implications. “In winter, more people are likely to suffer from colds and flu. Unfortunately, many patients still erroneously believe that taking antibiotics is the right course of treatment for the common cold, but don’t realise that antibiotics have been designed to fight bacterial and not viral infections. The common cold is a viral infectious disease caused by more than 200 strains of which rhinoviruses are the most common. Even though many of the symptoms might be the same, such as coughing, sneezing, fever and inflammation, bacteria and viruses are inherently two distinct organisms and therefore respond differently to medications. “If you’re feeling pretty grim this winter and think you can benefit from an antibiotic, the best way to determine the origin of an upper respiratory infection is to have a blood, urine or culture test of the sputum/ phlegm tissue done to identify whether it is caused by bacteria or a virus.
She further emphasises that antibiotic resistance impacts everyone and that at some point you or a loved one may be affected. “Doctors and pharmacists too have an important role to play. Be sure to make ABR a talking point in your consulting rooms and pharmacies this winter. Use the opportunity you have when consulting with a patient about the threat of ABR and the correct use of antibiotics. Also consider making contact with your local school(s) to address parents and caregivers about antibiotics at a teacher/parent evening. “Antibiotics are a precious resource and need to be treated as such. If not used responsibly today, ABR might in the not so distant future render many antibiotics null and void. Infections such as TB and septicaemia – the scourge of earlier centuries – are once again killing people at alarming rates. Antibiotics need to be used as a last resort or else there will be nothing left in our armoury to fight communicable diseases,” she concludes.

OUTDOOR TRENDS FOR WINTER Elize van den Berg of Beetroot Inc. recommends taking inspiration from Pantone’s Autumn/Winter 2018 report. According to the world-renowned authority on colour, “the continued transition away from cyclical trends, combined with a strong focus on self-expression and more exuberant colour mixes makes for some surprisingly delightful colour surprises in the autumn/winter palette. Exploring nuances within colour families and experimenting with the mixing of materials and textures freshens and reinvents the seasonal colour story.” The World Embraces an SA Tradition for 2018 In terms of international outdoor trends for 2018, the firepit is huge. And it seems the rest of the world has caught on to something we South Africans, with our indoor-outdoor lifestyle, take almost for granted: the outdoor room. We asked Beetroot Inc.’s Creative Director, Jeanne Badenhorst, for her advice on how to create an
enticing outdoor room. “Outdoor furniture is no longer just functional furniture. Focus is placed on comfort and design as it becomes an extension of your homes interior,” says Jeanne. “Add pieces like side tables and coffee tables to your patio set to create an outdoor room with comfort and style. Make use of jumbo floor cushions and carpets to add more dimension to the room and to soften the floor. Ottomans the same height as the outdoor couch, are great additions to the patio as it can double up as extra seating or as a coffee table.” Dining tables and chairs comes in different shapes and sizes – Jeanne advises us to find a table that family and friends can gather around to share a meal. “Use both chairs and benches around the table – it creates interest and you can fit more friends in by using a bench. Make use of cushions on the seats to ensure that guests linger longer.”
Scatter cushions will soften hard surfaces like wood and metal while adding some luxury and colour – they also make it easy and affordable to change your décor with the seasons, says Jeanne. Issued by: Paddington Station PR paul@paddingtonstationpr.co.za 021 447 0564
