DAVID MOFFATT:
DREAM BIG AND TAKE SMALL STEPS EVERY DAY!
By Danni Thunell Ende
David was the perfect inspiration for our Father’s Day front cover. He recently exited as Group Managing Director of Hellocomputer, a future generation digital agency, based in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The business was acquired by IPG, a listed entity on the New York Stock Exchange, and now forms part of the FCB group of companies. He has numerous current business interests and further satiates his creative yearnings as the guitarist for SAMA winning alternate rock band The Dirty Skirts, and SAMA nominated solo musical project Dassie. What inspired you to be an entrepreneur? I always planned to work for myself after gaining some experience. But I loved Richard Branson’s story, particularly the beginning with Virgin Records. To me it’s all about creating something that is an extension of your personality and then pouring your heart and soul into it. What would you like to teach your children about running a business? Dream big and take small steps every day. They’re already learning the basics with roadside pop-up stores selling their lemonade, arts and crafts! Do you think it’s easier being a father when you’re your own boss? People tend to work hardest for themselves, because failure becomes personal. But it’s nice to know that you don’t need permission to attend meaningful moments at school. Do you come from an entrepreneurial or musical family? Entrepreneurial. My father was an optometrist that expanded his business to incorporate many practices. I’m the only one with an interest in writing and performing music.
like a business category, believe in the company’s leadership and the product or service has something unique about it then I’d consider getting involved. Critically, seeing the ultimate exit to realise value from the start is an important consideration. How do you find a work/home balance? Having balance is a struggle. I prefer to set goals for my various roles: husband, father, shareholder, employee, son, friend, surfer, musician etc. And then try hit those goals weekly to ensure my personal vision is realised over time.

I believe it’s a learned skill. You do need to overcome the fear to take the first step. And continually invest in your knowledge.
What qualities do you attribute to your success? Visualising what I’m trying to build. Then add good old fashioned perseverance. What can you tell us about your current ventures? They’re diverse, but all link in some way to my expertise in marketing. I’ve moved from being heavily involved leading one business, to having multiples interests spanning mobile gaming, e-commerce, motion graphics and educational tourism. Are you a musician or businessman at heart? If music was a better business I’d have combined both. But I chose to live simultaneously in two universes, one pursuing my art, the other building a business. Music has given me immense satisfaction, but it was never going to fund a family of five in South Africa. What inspired you to work for yourself? When my first child was on the way I felt motivated to build something and take control over my working future. What would you like to teach your children about running a business? To believe anything is possible. Remember to be humble, fair, work hard and ultimately have fun. How do you find a work/home balance? It’s important to schedule time with the kids in the diary with the same importance you would a board meeting. Running your own business allows you the flexibility to use your time in a balanced way; so one can schedule bath-time, or collect kids from school and then ultimately make the work time back up. What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the work stress behind? A weekend away in the Cederberg with no signal. A family day out in the countryside. An hour or two of uninterrupted xbox game time. Do you have any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Everybody has the potential be successful, regardless of education, experience or funding. Hard graft and the will to succeed are crucial.

What would you like to teach your children about running a business? To be passionate in their business, I’d like them to hone their innovation and creativity. They’ll need to have nimble mindsets to be able to solve complex problems with ingenious solutions. Do you think it’s easier being a father when you’re your own boss? Yes and no. Being a boss is tough because you have to lead from the front. However, it is easier to be there when you’re needed the most which makes it worthwhile. The difficult part is separating the two, as your work goes everywhere with you. What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the work stress behind? Mucking about with my kids, be it playing in the back yard, swimming in the sea, riding bikes or maybe watching a goofy flick with them on TV! Do you have any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Don’t chicken out. Don’t be scared to fail and don’t be scared to say no! What qualities do you attribute to your success? How do you balance fatherhood and entrepreneurship? Not very well. I always have multiple projects on the go. I try and focus on unplugging completely at least one day a week and spend time with the kids trying to make their activity the priority.

How do you balance fatherhood with entrepreneurship? I add some structure and routine to my day to enable dedicated time for family and my children.

What would you like to teach your children about running your own business? Remain dedicated to your work, work hard, be trustworthy and never compromise on your work ethics. Choose a line of work that makes you happy.
What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the work stress behind? Losing myself in the mountain.

How do you balance fatherhood and entrepreneurship? I have an incredibly organised wife who looks after the family better than I ever could and she works in the business. Do you come from an entrepreneurial family? Yes, my father was a very gung-ho entrepreneur, at times, to the detriment of the family financially. But we survived and all the better for it. Has fatherhood made you more, or less cautious in business? I do think about my family commitments when making decisions in business. But you can have problems and stresses and worry about them or you can just have problems. What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the work stress behind? I love to go hiking in the mountains. It opens my space and leaves all the issues behind. Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? There is no failure except the failure that you put on yourself. TREVOR MCLEAN-ANDERSON Is Founder & CEO of Axis House, a billion Rand turnover multinational business servicing mines with a range of highly specialised proprietary chemical products. On the mining side he has companies in Australia, Chile, Peru and Russia. He has other business interests including a successful fitness brand called Velocity Sports Lab with private gyms in Hout Bay and Hilton, My Montessori Eco School and The Academy two independent private schools , an International Online Learning Centre called COLLS to be fully launched quite soon as well as Atari Investments a Commercial, Industrial, Retail & Residential property investment company. How do you define success and what do you attribute your success to? In the beginning, success meant the accumulation of wealth or the accumulation of recognition in one’s chosen industry. I was very lucky that early on I realised that in order to be meaningfully successful, you have to be working on something that you really enjoy. To become an expert at something it is said that you have to spend 10 000 hours at it. I am not sure about the 10 000 hours theory - but you will never be tenacious at something if you are not intrinsically passionate about it. My perception of success has changed over the years - personal success is meaningless if you are not happy at home and in your community. How do you manage such diverse businesses? I am still actively involved in Axis House which is the mothership. This company is my baby, but even so I have had to loosen my grip on the reigns - and hand over to younger more energetic colleagues. Whenever I went away on leave - I would come back to record sales months - so I knew I was working with the right people. All the other businesses I am involved in - I have partnered with people who have been in that industry for decades, and it would be unwise of me to think that I could do a better job. How do you know you’re onto a winning business idea- is it gut instinct? New business ideas are presented all the time. I look for passion and ability in my partners. Unfortunately, there is no winning recipe, it’s all about hard work, getting sales, managing cashflow, hiring the right people and as always, a little bit of luck helps a lot. Nevertheless - not every business opportunity I have been involved in has been successful - these failures have taught me some very valuable lessons. Do you have any tips for entrepreneurs dealing with doubt? If you have no doubt then you are likely not to have thought things through. Doubt is natural and is healthy. Do more research, speak to more people, but also remember that there are ten billion ideas in the world - the key to success is turning those ideas into businesses. Edison did not invent electricity - he worked out how to commercialise it. Seek partners that can enable your ideas. The most important thing is to make sure that the people you work with have the same values as yourself and by extension the company.

What are you passionate about outside of business? The recipe of family and adventure defines my favourite passions. We all have our bucket lists. Last year we were fortunate enough to put family and adventure into one basket and tick a big bucket list item - Cape to Cairo. Our journey started off over a glass of wine and progressed to the purchase and pimping of a camper van. The adventure saw us through many struggles and life lessons. We slept at borders, encountered many car troubles, escaped riots and scary moments in Ethiopia where insurgents knocked on our windows as well as joyful experiences like white linen service in the Masai Mara. It was like the Amazing Race. On arriving in Cairo we visited Lynne’s moms ashes at the Pyramids which was the real family achievement -” Jobs fill your pockets, but adventures fill your soul.” – Jaime Lyn What is your personal creed when it comes to running a business? TENACITY. We have all heard the 80/20 rule of start-up businesses - 80% of businesses fail in their first year. I think 100% of all businesses would fail if the managers/owners threw in the towel when it seemed logical to do so. I have often heard successful business owners saying that if they know now what they knew then - they would never have started their journeys! Who or what inspires you to keep reaching new heights? I think one always wants the approval of your parents and your wife - these are the people that have inspired me over the years at various times. What are the hallmarks of a great boss? The most important thing is to make sure that the people you work with have the same values as yourself and by extension the company. It is important to engage with your team all the time to make sure that you are all still connected and ‘scrumming’ in the same direction. How do you find a work/home balance? You just have to be able to say no. Family is more important than work. Describe your ideal Father’s Day? Having my wife, two daughters and son as well as my extended family around the table with good food, wine, music and lots of laughter.

What would you like to teach your children about running a business? I’d like to raise my boys with the confidence to back themselves, be creative, to develop their passions and to follow their hearts. With this as a foundation, and the discipline to keep going, their business pursuits can only be successful.
What inspired you to work for yourself? Early on in my career, I realised I had many ideas that I wanted to explore and execute. Working for someone else didn’t allow me to do so.
How do you balance fatherhood and entrepreneurship? In my business the demands of good client service often run into traditional family time, so I try keep the balance by being flexible with my client appointments. Communication is key. I also surround myself with a supportive, loving family.
How do you find a work/home balance? It all starts at home - so having the support of my wonderful wife and immersing myself in the privilege of raising three sons with her inspires me. What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the work stress behind? Time in the ocean - sea salt, sun and sand - with my wife, sons, friends and family. Do you have any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Just go for it! The mind will always play tricks on you and give you a thousand reasons not to implement your idea. Starting something inevitably leads to the next thing and that is how opportunity is born! Are entrepreneurs born or made? Entrepreneurship is the manifestation of an attitude. Everyone has the ability to bring a concept to life they simply need to find it within themselves.

How do you balance Fatherhood and entrepreneurship? Owning your own business and having a great team at work allows one to have flexibility. I am really blessed to be able to be with my family when they need me. Do you come from an entrepreneurial family? Yes, my Father had many different businesses while I was growing up and that taught me to think out the box. He showed me that you can support your family, while exploring different possibilities. What’s your favourite way to unwind and leave the stress of work behind? Photography brings me great joy and excitement. Do you have any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? An entrepreneur doesn’t stand alone but with a team of capable people. He identifies people’s strengths and abilities, so they too enjoy what they do. Make calculated decisions and just do it!

What would you like to teach your children about running a business? Growth through education, learning from mentors & peers, work experience, patience and planning is important. Be courageous in thinking out of the box. Do you come from an entrepreneurial family? Yes – my parents and siblings are all entrepreneurs. My mother (Lola) brought Seeff to Hout Bay and shortly thereafter opened her own successful Estate Agency. How do you unwind after a busy day? I love to read stories to my girls and play outside with them. I love hiking and walking my dog, Hiro. Do you have any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Being ‘thrown in the deep end’ can be the quickest way to learn. But, when your head is above water, take time to observe, learn from others and keep an open mind.

CO-OWNING A HOME A GOOD WAY TO GET ONTO THE PROPERTY LADDER – BUT CONSIDER CAREFULLY THE TERMS OF DOING SO With fewer couples nowadays getting married but choosing rather to co-habit, or friends choosing to share as they cannot afford something on their own, comes the trend of co-owning property. Co-ownership is a great way to get onto the property ladder but does need careful consideration in drawing up a contract between the owners so that there is no miscommunication or misconception of how the property will be dealt with should they part or decide to sell, says Charlene Nolte-Joubert, partner at Henkes Nolte-Joubert (and a founding member of the Attorney Realtor Hub). Once a property has been found, before signing an offer to purchase, the buyers should establish what percentage each owner will hold – if it is not stipulated in an agreement between the co-owners then it is assumed that they own equal shares in the property. The shareholding in the property can, however, also be recorded in the title deeds at the Deeds Office, to ensure that the agreement is preserved.
There are many things to consider when buying a property with another person, and the following should be included in the agreement between the co-owners: • • •
• • •
Who will occupy the property? Will it be one person or be shared?
Who will be applying for finance, paying in cash or contributing the deposit, and in what proportion if this is to be shared?
What happens in the case of death of one
•
What happens if the co-owners decide to part and is there a dispute resolution in place if they do so on unfriendly terms.
of the co-owners, or inability to contribute to future payments?
“Co-ownership is a very good way to own a property that you could possibly not afford to buy on your own. It is important, however, to choose your co-owners carefully, and be sure to draw up an agreement from the outset with the co-owners with regard to portions of bond repayments, rates, running expenses and conduct rules for all involved. It is also best to discuss before purchasing what the future plans each co-owner has for his share, in case their intention is not to hold onto the investment for the same period of time the others need. Buying and selling property is expensive, and investments should always be seen as long term,” says Nolte-Joubert. For further information contact: Charlene Nolte-Joubert on 083 258 1343 or email charlene@henkesnoltejoubert.co.za
When maintenance or repairs are needed, what percentage will each owner pay? It is assumed that the contributions are in direct ratio to the share of the property owned, unless stipulated.
If the property or share in the property is sold, how will the profits (or losses) be split? Will the sale of a share in the property be restricted by the other owner(s)?
Is there a chance a co-owner might use this property as collateral for another loan or draw from an access bond?

During one of the toughest economic climates we have seen in the Hout Bay real estate market over the last 10 years, our Hout Bay team had a record month with a whopping R30 000 000 in sales concluded in May 2018. Here’s what their Principal Agent, Romy Tarboton has to say: “When you’re in a Buyer’s market it takes a proactive agent to get the job done. Our Agents don’t wait for buyers to come to them, we rely on the networks we have

built over decades and entice the buyers to the homes we represent. Our success can in part be attributed to our tenacity, but we cannot negate the value of correct pricing, which is something that only experience teaches you. Our agents live, sleep, eat and breathe Hout Bay – which makes selling the area second nature. We understand how to get the best possible price for your home in this market.” Contact us for an expert appraisal today.

NOW IS THE TIME
TO TREAT YOUR PIGMENTATION WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION AND HOW CAN WE TREAT IT? By Amy Bowie
We’re all probably experiencing a few Winter blues as Summer comes to an end and we’re left with rainy days and being in the awkward Summer-Winter fashion stage. We can guarantee however, that your skin is grateful for the sunless days. Throughout Summer, we expose our skin to the harmful UV rays almost daily. Whether we mean to or not, the sun exposure affects our skin dramatically, -from sun damage, pigmentation, to broken capillaries, spider veins and Rosacea (redness of the skin). Introducing the PDL Laser Facial at Pulse Dermatology and Laser....
• •
TREATMENT OVERVIEW
•
The PDL Laser Facial is a cutting edge rejuvenating treatment that combines IPL Photo rejuvenation with the skin tightening effects of Radio frequency (RF) treatment and an ice therapy tip that allows patients to have stronger more effective treatment than ever before in complete comfort.

FAQ
Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that provides an effective way to correct and treat skin damage without disruption of the skin’s surface, producing younger and healthier looking skin on the face, neck, chest and hands. It can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type, offering you a personalized and targeted treatment plan.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
PDL Laser Skin treatments using Photo Rejuvenation and RF technology will effectively:
PDL laser treatments are typically administered in a series of 4-6 treatments performed at intervals of a minimum of 3 weeks. Spreading the treatment over this period provides a gradual improvement of the skin, minimal amount of adverse effects and preserves the important

PDL Laser treatments are performed using a handheld device that delivers a broad spectrum of light onto the skin’s surface. The wave lengths of light penetrate deep into the skin tissue to stimulate the cells beneath the skin’s surface, and triggers the body’s response to eliminate injured tissues and dead skin cells.
“no downtime” feature of the program.
IS PDL LASER THE SAME AS LASER?
PDL Laser technology is based on the same principle as laser but emits a broad spectrum of pulsed light to reach several layers of the skin simultaneously, improving the texture, quality, colour and health of your skin. It can treat multiple conditions simultaneously; including broken veins and capillaries, redness of the skin, age spots, and pigmentation.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PDL LASER SKIN REJUVENATION?
In addition to improving uneven skin colour, sun damage, facial redness (Rosacea), and pigmentation, the heat energy stimulates new collagen production beneath the skin surface, firming and rejuvenating the skin. After a series of PDL Laser treatments at intervals spaced 4 weeks apart the skin will appear more luminous, brighter and smoother. Improvements can be seen 10 days following the first treatment and enhanced results can be seen with each subsequent treatment. The results continue to improve long after the treatment, as PDL laser stimulates your own natural collagen to rebuild and rejuvenate the skin.
ABOUT PULSE DERMATOLOGY & LASER
Amy Bowie is the founder of Pulse Dermatology & Laser. Having spent seven years in the UK, she trained and worked alongside world-renowned dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Her client list included the rich and the famous A-listers of the world. Amy became a pioneer in the industry, going on to lead and train teams of medical therapists at E.F Medispa - the top clinic chain in the United Kingdom - where she also lead the team to receive UK’s Gold Standard Aesthetics Award in 2011. After returning to South Africa, she decided to share her international expertise in her hometown by opening Pulse.
“The South African market is extremely difficult to the rat race in the UK. Plastic surgery is common overseas and normally the first choice amongst consumers, however Cape Town patients are more
cautious and discreet, looking for that non-surgical alternative as opposed to cosmetic surgery”, says
Amy.
“Due to my experience and training in the top clinics in the UK, I am extremely lucky to have all the latest treatments and procedures at my disposal. My goal is to bridge the gap between medical treatment and “beauty” so that aesthetically speaking, we can have longer lasting benefits. I believe people need to be treated as a whole, from the inside to out, which is why we do comprehensive medical history and consultation to ascertain a patients needs, from supplements to home clinic treatment too. I had a large male client following in the UK, so it is no surprise that I also cater to the growing male market”. - Amy Bowie

CHRONIC SHOULDER TENSION By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
Chronic tension in the neck and shoulders is an extremely common complaint amongst many people, and the problem can have many underlying causes. The long and stressful hours people spend sitting at desks leave them with muscular discomfort that they carry out of the office like a weight on their shoulders. Because of the weight of your head and the neck’s high mobility, the neck and the shoulders are prone to tension and injury. Chronic muscle tension occurs when one or more muscles in the body remains overly contracted for a prolonged length of time. These muscle fibres become shortened, unable to relax and hypoxic (oxygen deprived) which means they are prone to fatigue more rapidly, as well as ache and pain quickly.
“When you have adjusted the physical to its normal demands nature supplies the remainder” Dr A T Still, Founder of Osteopathy 1874 The shoulder girdle is a very complex area. The head weighs, about 5 and a half kilograms. For every couple of centimetres the head moves forward this weight increases and exaggerates the stress placed on your neck and shoulders. Subtle changes in posture or inappropriate exercise will effect muscle balance which can lead to some muscles (often upper trapezius and rhomboids) working too hard, with resultant “muscle tension”. The upper traps run from the tip of your shoulder to the base of your skull and also attaches to the back of the spine of the neck and the upper most thoracic spine. It forms the contour of your neck and shoulders. The ache and stiffness felt in the shoulders throughout the day is often the accumulation of many stiff and tired muscles compressing the joints between the upper ribs and vertebrae. Years of poor posture and inappropriate movement leaves our bodies with an accumulation of muscle contraction that gradually becomes quite painful. Muscles are entwined in layers of connective tissue (fascia). These layers of fascia allow the muscles and fascia to glide over each other. When fascial layers become bound together, that’s called an adhesion. When fascia sticks together it can make it difficult for muscles to move normally. This can cause a lot of issues beyond where the adhesion is, creating compensation patterns and potentially throwing off our posture and movement. Adhesions are also a cause of muscular pain in the body.
The spinal nerves of the neck and upper back can become irritated by stress or trauma which will lead to tightening of the trapezius and other neck muscles. A very important component to addressing trapezius muscle tension is in addressing the nervous system. Neck and shoulder tension and pain can often be associated with headaches, reduced a range of movement of the neck, a “crunching” sensation when turning your head and referred pain down your arms. Pain in one or both shoulders could also be caused by referred pain from elsewhere in the body. It is important to speak to a medical professional such as an osteopath about the symptoms you are experiencing, even if they only seem minor. Shoulder pain left untreated can cause more serious chronic problems later and start to affect your activities in everyday life. Osteopaths use the combination of medical knowledge and highly sensitive hands to manipulate, massage, stretch, and soften the chronic tight muscles that cause your pain. Once a diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms has been made, an appropriate course of treatment combined with postural and exercise advice can be commenced to treat the underlying issue. Osteopaths will use various soft-tissue and joint mobilization techniques to release tension. Osteopathic treatment seeks to address the true cause in order to provide pain relief that is longer lasting. Relief from shoulder tension can often be provided quickly and simply so there is no need to put up with with chronic shoulder tension any longer.

RELATIONSHIPS &
THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME APART…
By Janet Winterbourne
Whether it’s enjoying some precious alone time or spending time with friends, time apart can help to strengthen an identification as a couple and make us feel connected to the world, it is a healthy part of a relationship to be able to spend some time apart. Whilst it is important for a successful marriage that couples do spend time doing things with each other, relationships can often feel re-juvenated when partners have the opportunity to individuate and enjoy a solo pursuit or share special time enjoying the therapeutic effects of engaging with friends. Doing things together as a couple IS vital, as shared experiences give a couple something in common which helps make them feel good about each other and connected within the relationship.
don’t have things they both enjoy or can’t find something new, they can take turns participating in each other’s activities. But keep in mind that fairness and balance are essential. Partners should have an equal say in selecting activities and equal time should be dedicated to each partner’s interests. If we only choose to do our own activities, our partner will probably get tired of that arrangement, and our time together may then be more damaging than enhancing to our relationship.
The amount of time together matters but it’s more about how that time is used. For joint activities to be beneficial, they have to meet a few criteria. First, they have to lead partners to interact with each other in a positive way. Even simple chores, such as grocery shopping or gardening, can add to a relationship if partners are engaged while they’re doing it.
Commitment is also important. If we agree to participate in our partner’s activity, we have to do it willingly and give the impression that we’re interested. This is a form of emotion work, the art of presenting yourself as involved even though you might not be, because you want to make your partner happy. If we act bored or disinterested with a partner’s activity, we not only take away their enjoyment, but that same attitude is likely to be reciprocated when it’s our turn to pick an activity.
Secondly, joint activities have to be enjoyable to both partners. Some couples have at least one or two similar interests, so they should be able to come up with things they can do together. If they
Marriages also benefit when spouses have time for themselves, either to pursue their own interests or
just to relax. Personal time allows us to maintain our individual identities, provides opportunities to do things we like to do, and lets us feel like we have some control over our lives. Alone time can actually help to keep a relationship fresh and less stressful. How much personal time that is ‘ideal’ varies from couple to couple. What’s most important is that partners agree how much time they want together and apart. When handled sensitively, each partner feels they’re getting their fair share. Here perceptions are more important than the actual number of hours. Even if couples spend very little time together or apart, the relationship is fine if that’s what they BOTH want. If each partner has different perspectives, however, the amount of time together and apart can be a source of conflict. For some partners, too much together time can be suffocating, while for others too little can make them feel insecure and isolated.

Say goodbye to spider veins Don’t let your spider veins have you dread the thought of wearing a pair of shorts. Removing them is easy! Varicose veins are large, raised vessels that can be seen through the skin whereas spider veins are a lot smaller. These dilated, superficial blood vessels can develop anywhere on the body but usually appear on your legs and ankles. While unsightly, they’re fortunately easy to treat in-office at any Skin or Body Renewal branch.
getting burned. Today, we use a laser or a light-based treatment like AcuTip 500 that can reduce or completely remove spider veins anywhere on your body, even your face. You will most likely need more than one treatment, but the results are proven.
Sclerotherapy
If you’re very prone to spider veins, you might have venous insufficiency. This means your valves don’t work as they should, making it difficult for your body to pump blood back up to your heart. In this case, our doctors might recommend carboxytherapy. Just four to six sessions for lymph drainage can dramatically improve both your lymphatic and venous circulation.
Carboxytherapy
If your spider veins are larger than 3mm you’ll be a candidate for sclerotherapy. This involves injecting the veins with a sclerosant, an ‘irritant’ that damages the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse. Your body then absorbs the vein naturally causing it to disappear like a bruise over a period of weeks. Laser Not a fan of needles? In the past, spider veins were zapped via electrolysis, but this was a painful process that could result in Stockist of:

MY MONTESSORI ECO SCHOOL
A SCHOOL FOR THE NEXT GENERATION. IT’S AN EDUCATION FOR LIFE! A lifelong dream come true, a school for the next generation of children coming into the world. Something that has evolved into a holistic and wholesome education system that brings the world of Montessori to the child in a setting that is far from anything else that has been done before. A beautiful farm environment that was founded specially with this lifelong dream in mind. Crafted and inspired by 2 passionate individuals invested in education and making a difference in the world. Supported by an awe inspiring team of professionals. My Montessori Eco school came to life from the ground up. The garden was transformed from an open piece of land which the 2 donkeys inhabited that we adopted when we bought the property, to a place for children to play, learn, experience the beauty of nature and animals and thrive with the passion and drive they innately held inside each of them. Watching each phase was something to be proud of. Being able to create out of the box something such as this was very unique and unusual.
parent at my previous school once upon a time and now business partner for this extraordinary journey of creating a new frontier in pre-school education. My Montessori Eco school was created and the classrooms furnished with only the very best Montessori equipment and furniture, soft furnishings that brought energy and vitality something a pre-school class needs to feed the soul of children today. The school opened its doors in 2013 to huge celebration, relief and tears of joy.
As the school began to take shape, the joy I felt was immeasurable to anything I had experienced in this life. The gratitude to those assisting me to create this one of a kind school was profound as how can you thank the man enough that made your childhood dream come to life. IS YOUR HOME WINTER READY?
By Danni Thunell Ende
It’s the perfect time of year to examine your home and ensure that vital maintenance and repairs are done as winter temperatures continue to plummet. “With the checks and balances done, you can rest easy knowing that if things do go wrong, your insurance will take care of it,” recommends Mandy Barrett of insurance brokerage and risk advisors, Aon South Africa. Clean up Your Garden Cover garden furniture and ensure garden hoses are stored in a frost-free area to prevent it from freezing and cracking in cold temperatures. Remove falling leaves from gutters and clear away dry debris as clogged gutters may create maintenance issues on your building. Take the time to trim any dead branches off trees, such as palm trees, and shrubs as it poses a fire risk, especially if the plant is close to your home. Your garden may need extra trimming if you live in the drought-stricken Cape region, or if you live in a region that is heading into a dry winter.
Make sure that the water pump on your water collection tank or borehole is in good working order and has ‘rundry’ protection so it will automatically shut off if it detects that there is no water to pump – this could happen if the water freezes in the pipes or the tank runs dry. Fill the Gaps Fill any cracks you may have in your walls, especially exterior walls. Water coupled with freezing temperatures can worsen existing cracks during winter months. Check all doors and windows to make sure they seal properly and replace any gaps with door and window foam seal tape – keeping out the cold air will save significantly on heating costs. Check and replace any broken roof tiles and ensure that flashings are in order – especially if you experience rainy winter months.
Gas Stove, heaters and fireplaces: Exercise extra precaution when using these appliances in your home – gas and open flames represent a significant fire and health risk. Always use your gas appliances as specified by the manufacturer with the correct safety valves and mechanisms in place. Get a certified gas installer to do regular safety checks and service your equipment before the winter months. If you love a cosy winter fire, make sure that flammable objects are kept well away from a fireplace and always use a fire screen to prevent any sparks from flying off and setting fire to carpets or curtains. Clear out chimneys and air vents to ensure ventilation is not impaired in any way.
