Spring is in the air, and for some it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, coming out of the hibernation of winter and having an enthuiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want
ED’S LETTER We’ve just celebrated Heritage Day, which is such an important day for us as South Africans. By definition, it’s a day on which we’re encouraged to celebrate our culture and the diversity of our beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. We’re proud to have the current Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, on our front cover this month. Proudly South African and a true reflection of all that we strive for as a nation, Tamaryn hopes to use her title to help to make a difference during her reign. She’s doing a great job so far with her #BreakTheStigma campaign! Let’s take a leaf from her book and embody all the principles we’ve fought so hard to protect. I can almost smell the lamb chops sizzling on the braai. Through the rain and fog and the full dams, I see long, lazy Summer days ahead. I hope you all manage to take some time off these school holidays and grab those special moments with your family. Enjoy.

TAMARYN GREEN : ALWAYS BE YOURSELF! By Danni Thunell Ende
From a young age, local Paarl girl Tamaryn Green was destined for great heights. Hardworking and ambitious, her lists of school achievements speak for themselves. The saying: ‘Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,’ is especially true in this case. Tamaryn has been preparing for greatness her whole life and truly deserves the title of Miss South Africa. Tell us about your journey from primary school in Paarl to being crowned Miss South Africa. At school I was always academically strong and hardworking. I also enjoyed sport. I attended William Lloyd Primary School where I was elected deputy head girl. I entered my first ever pageant at the age of 15. This was for a local church pageant. I then went on to New Orleans Secondary School where I was head girl as well as Mayoress of the Paarl Junior Town Council. In grade 11, I won my high school pageant called ‘Miss New Orleans.’ In matric I was the dux learner. My journey then commenced at the University of Cape Town where I am currently studying medicine to eventually become a paediatrician. I further participated in a few more local pageants, Miss Rochester and Miss Drakenstein. As a 2nd year student I volunteered to walk in a UCT charity fashion show which is where Boss Models scouted me and my professional modelling career began. Entering Miss SA was always one of my goals and this year I knew I was ready. My most important goal was to use the title of Miss SA to help make a difference in my country. Where did your interest in medicine come from? My father always wanted to be a doctor but due to circumstances in the apartheid era he could not. This is where my interest first sparked.
Who’s been your biggest inspiration and mentor? My dad! What’s your favourite way to unwind during your free time? Spending quality time with my friends and family and watching series. What does winning Miss South Africa mean to you? It’s a blessing. A platform to make a difference in the world and grow myself. What’s the next step in your pageant journey? Participating in Miss Universe at the end of the year on 16 December and I would like to continue with my #BreakTheStigma campaign. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your life? Fighting my TB illness in 2015. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Always, always be yourself. Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows. I don’t like chocolate and I’m an arachnophobe.

MEET THE HENKES JOUBERT BARRY INC TEAM: RENE BARRY, ATTORNEY, NOTARY PUBLIC AND CONVEYANCER Rene grew up in George, and first embarked on her studies with the goal of getting a BSc degree, but after her first year decided that law was her first passion and changed tack. She obtained her BA(LLB) in 2001 from the University of Stellenbosch and during this time was also actively involved in a law clinic and enjoyed tutoring first year students. After completing her articles at Raubenheimers Attorneys in George, she was admitted as an attorney, conveyancer and is also a Notary Public:

a specialist attorney who has an in-depth knowledge of certain Acts, and prescribed processes, and who is legally empowered to officially witness signatures, take statements and certify the validity of documents. She joined Henkes Joubert Barry Inc (then Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys) in December 2012, as a part of their conveyancing team, but now deals primarily with where her strengths lie as a Notary Public, and has recently become one of the directors of the firm (as of August this year). “I’m extremely proud to be a director alongside Johnny Henkes and Charlene Joubert, and our dynamic company can only grow from strength to strength as we all work to our strengths within the company,” she said.

Rene’s typical day as a Notary Public could range from assisting clients from any part of the world in ensuring that they have the correct documentation for their property transactions, to assisting couples with the drawing up of their antenuptial contracts – where she feels strongly that couples must understand the choices they make before marriage and how impactful these are. Helping people decide what to include in their contracts is a satisfying part of the job, she says. Apart from her busy days at Henkes Joubert Barry, Rene also teaches Sunday School and is mom to two active young children, and she enjoys yoga sessions in her (limited) free time.

THE FINANCIAL MISTAKES THAT COUPLES MAKE By Janet Winterbourne
You wouldn’t be alone if you and your partner have arguments around the subject of money and finances. It is one of the main reasons that couples cite as cause for divorce. When I am counselling couples about to get married, I often enquire around the touchy subject of finances and how they intend to handle such matters. It comes as no surprise that many have not planned how they will deal with the subject of running the expenses of their relationship and how they will go about it. One of the guidelines I suggest to couples is to approach running the finances as if it were a business. People often communicate badly or feel awkward when it comes to money talk. If you approach it as if it were a business matter, you would be surprised how much more methodical and at ease people can be. Five of the common mistakes that couples can make are as follows:
•
•
•
Combining finances- should you merge all monies into one account or should you maintain your own accounts, with one account set up for joint expenses? We all do things differently, but it is wise to retain some sense of personal autonomy. This method allows for personal freedom whilst showing responsibility to the finances of the relationship. Dealing with debt- a lot of couples have issues around debt where one believes debt is good and the other believes debt it bad, or one or the other enters the relationship bringing debt with them- usually when one partners with another who carries debt, even though it isn’t yours, your life is often impacted by the consequences of debt. Do not deny the problem, discuss it and decide HOW you intend to deal with the debt. Make a plan and then stick to it! Invest well- surveys have shown that men are more willing to take risks when it comes to investments than women. This may mean risking one’s savings, pension or assets which may not sit well with the other. An approach that
083 268 6566 Tokai/Westlake, Cape Town janet@universe.co.za www.janetwinterbourne.com
14
may help is to invest as much as your goals allow but within a time frame that’s realistic. •
Financial secrecy- big financial secrets can ruin a marriage or leave one partner oblivious as to how desperate a situation can be thus introducing unacceptable risk. If one partner gambles with the family security, they may be fooling themselves that it will all come right in time. Alternatively, they may have an “I will make it back” mentality. Sadly, they often don’t and by lying to themselves they often put their family at risk.
•
Planning for emergencies- some may say this is negative thinking, but sometimes that curve ball comes, and it can hit hard! Poor planning can induce a sense of panic when a financial glitch hits you. It could be in the form of an illness, a quiet spell in the family business or an unexpected expense, that has you reeling. By knowing there is a slush fund you can reduce stress and avoid denial that there will ever be a problem.

FINE & COUNTRY ATLANTIC SEABOARD, PURVEYORS OF LUXURY PROPERTY What is a LUXURY property? Did you know that the ATLANTIC SEABOARD of Cape Town is comprised of South Africa’s highest concentration of luxury properties? A luxury property, in the South African market has been classed as a property that has sold for or has a market value of ¹ R 20 000 000. In this category, generally, sellers do not need to sell and buyers do not need to buy, so it stands to reason, and what many luxury home owners may not know, is that the marketing of luxury homes is different to that of other properties. Accordingly, the pool of buyers is smaller, the time on

the market is generally longer and luxury property is much more sensitive to volatility in the economy. In fact, brokerages successful in the sale of luxury property are adept at sourcing nontraditional channels of buyers and have finely tuned marketing strategies that create the climate needed for a precedent setting sales price in the shortest period of time. This is even more the case when challenges in the economy make larger purchases less common. Fine & Country was founded as a brand that caters to luxury property. As a luxury brand we know what it takes to sell luxury

property. It goes beyond the passive model of traditional property sales and requires a sophisticated approach we have fine tuned on behalf of our discerning clientele. In fact, our approach is so refined we can proudly say we are the experts of non-publicised listings and sales for clients who value discretion above all else in a transaction. So, as spring has arrived in Cape Town and the season is ready to commence with our visitors from around the world, let us put our expertise in the field of luxury property to work for you, like we did here where our combined efforts with Cape Waterfront Properties achieved the highest price for a property in Llandudno in 2018.

PUSH PAUSE: SLOW LIFE DOWN, ENJOY THE MOMENT & SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE
By Denise Cowburn-Levy
There are times I feel like I am an octopus with eight arms extending from my body; each one of them juggling dozens of plates, and I wonder, just when and how many are going to fall! Do you ever feel this way? Like there is just too much going on and that you need to slow it all down? Do you feel the panic that rises from your chest, the shortness of breath, the pressure on your shoulders weighing you down as you look at the endless lists of what is still TO DO? There are times when the juggling act goes off smoothly, and the audience applauds, and you collapse onto the couch for a well-deserved glass of red wine. ‘Ahhh….’ you sigh, ‘well that all worked out okay; I can do this!’ And then there are other times, when slowly one or two plates slip out from under the huge pile and crash to the floor, shattered into tiny pieces. We need to ask ourselves: ‘Is this such a bad thing?’ Maybe not, for we are all human here, doing the best that we can, with the resources that we have. Perhaps this is our cue to take a deeper look at what is going on here and how to make a change….
I know that when we do manage to push the pause button and sit down to eat with friends or family, either a home-cooked meal, or at one of the incredible eateries in our city, time stands still for a while, as if suspended. We sigh deeply as we relax heavily into that dining chair. We enjoy the company, the deep conversations, we share our feelings and our affection, and of course, we enjoy the food. We feel warm inside, perhaps helped by the wine, but our energy is renewed, and our souls sing. This is what life is all about, these special moments, and we need to create more of them for ourselves. We must heed the warning before those plates crash down.
menus, and Spring produces some of my all-time favourites; artichokes and asparagus. Already my mind starts buzzing with ideas, I feel creative and inspired, and I can already taste that lovely bitterness of the roasted artichoke petal dipped into a buttery hollandaise. And the charred asparagus, almost nutty, topped with slices of umami-flavoured, aged Parmesan and a simple olive oil, lemon and parsley dressing. Mmmmm! Make food preparation fun, involve your friends and family in the kitchen, and then take the weight off, sit back, relax and enjoy! Slow it all down! And should you need any advice, don’t hesitate to contact us on info@gingerandlime. co.za We are always happy to help with foodie advice.
Spring is in the air and nature brings forth such bountiful produce for us to enjoy. I look to the seasons for inspiration when preparing my

SURVEY SHEDS LIGHT ON WEIRD ALLERGIES It’s hayfever season – the time of year when nature releases gazillions of microscopic pollen spores into the atmosphere, but while springtime has a whopping 17 million (30%) of South Africans in a frenzy, our nation also seems to grapple with much rarer allergies. Pharma Dynamics, recently conducted a national poll among 1 772 allergy sufferers to find out to what degree South Africans are affected by unusual allergies. Here’s what the survey revealed: • 36% experience eczema type symptoms when wearing jewellery • 25% are allergic to certain fruit • 21% break out in a rash when spending time in the sun (different to sunburn) • 17% suffer from pressure urticaria, which means they can’t wear tight clothing, sit down, lean against or touch anything for too long • 17% have an allergic reaction to air conditioners • 16% are allergic to cigarette smoke • 15% experience allergy symptoms when eating shellfish, such as mussels, oysters, prawns etc • 15% are allergic to alcohol • 13% break out in a red rash when exposed to cold temperatures • 9% are allergic to hair dye • 7% experience either hives, swelling of the mouth and throat or wheezing after eating chocolate • 6% complain of headaches, heart palpitations or skin problems when drinking coffee • 6% break out in hives, coughs or sneezes when working with wood • 5% are allergic to fizzy drinks • 3% experience redness, swelling or flaking around the nail when applying artificial nails Nicole Jennings, spokesperson at Pharma Dynamics explains that an allergic reaction typically occurs when the body mistakenly misreads something that is harmless as a threat.
“This overreaction by the immune system leads to an allergic reaction, which can manifest as a rash, fever, headache, swelling of the mouth or affected area, wheezing, runny or stuffy nose, nausea and the like. “Those who are allergic to jewellery are likely to have a nickel allergy – also known as contact allergic dermatitis. Nickel is often used in the base metal of less expensive jewellery, which is then plated with gold or silver. Affected individuals often develop eczema in places where nickel-containing jewellery touches the skin, such as the fingers, earlobes, wrists and neck. Sufferers should rather opt for jewellery that is hypoallergenic, made from stainless steel, sterling silver, polycarbonate plastic or at least 18-karat gold. “Fruit such as strawberries, kiwi, peach, apple, bananas and citrus are known to cause allergies, which can prove fatal in severe cases. Most often, symptoms include skin reactions, swelling of the oral cavity, asthma or rhinitis. Similar signs of alarm are also common in those who are allergic to alcohol. While some may be allergic to alcohol itself, others may be sensitive to certain allergens in alcoholic drinks, such as wheat, barley, yeast, grapes etc. However, if you are allergic to alcohol, fruit or any other type of food, rather steer clear of these allergens,” advises Jennings.
hives within minutes of exposure in some individuals, equally a tad too much sunshine could lead to similar symptoms. “Different to sunburn, a sun allergy or ‘vampire allergy’ – as it is commonly referred to – is defined as polymorphic light eruption, which can be described as sun poisoning. Various degrees of sun allergies exist – some are hereditary while others develop symptoms when triggered by factors, such as medication. Severe rashes should be seen to by a dermatologist or allergologist. If you suffer from a sun allergy, wear sun-protective clothing during the day. “Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and para-toluenediamine (PTD) are often used in hair dyes, which could cause contact dermatitis. Symptoms include burning and stinging skin, as well as a bumpy red rash, which can be alleviated with shampoos or creams containing topical corticosteroids.” Another unusual allergy, called “pressure urticaria”, may occur after sitting or standing for too long or when wearing tight clothing. The hands, feet, trunk, buttocks, legs and face are mostly affected and is characterised by welts or painful lesions, which could last for 8 to 72 hours. The peak age of onset is in one’s 20s and 30s.
Ever heard of being allergic to the cold? According to health authorities, urticaria (a type of skin allergy) affects between 15 and 25% of the population at least once in their lifetime, while ‘cold urticaria’ – being allergic to the cold – makes up about 3% of urticaria cases.
“You should never ignore the symptoms of an allergic reaction. If left untreated, it can quickly worsen, especially in the case of anaphylaxis, where emergency treatment is required. It’’s best to know your allergy status and to carry emergency medication on you,” advises Jennings.
Jennings says while cold temperatures and even diving into a cold pool could trigger itchy welts or

TRAPPED NERVE IN THE NECK By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath
“Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.”
- Hippocrates (450 B. C) Father of modern medicine.
The nerve can be irritated, inflamed or pressed on and this can produce symptoms such as pain that is aching or sharp, neck or spinal pain, shoulder pain, pain that radiates down the arm, a burning sensation or numbness, and pins and needles in the arms and fingers, headaches, muscle wasting and loss of grip strength. When a nerve is trapped, the pain and other symptoms may not be at the actual site. Instead, the pain and other sensations can travel to other parts of the body, including down and through the arm. The heavier the pressure on the nerve, the further away the pain may be felt from where the nerve is trapped.
A trapped nerve (pinched or impinged nerve) is the result of pressure being applied to the nerve. The symptoms of a trapped nerve in the neck vary in intensity from mild, to severe and painful depending on the degree of entrapment. Nerve pain usually happens due to compression between the neck facet joints that connect each spinal bone to the next. The facet joints are surrounded by capsules that, when put under strain, become inflamed and subsequently put pressure on the spinal nerves exiting that region, creating the nerve pain. Trapped nerves can also be impinged by a bone, disc, ligament or muscle being out of place, thereby pressing on the nerve and causing a disruption in the nerve’s ability to function.
www.hearingclinic.co.za
An osteopath begins by carefully evaluating the patient, asking questions about the patient’s symptoms, activity and health, as well as by performing a detailed orthopaedic, neurological and physical examination with active and passive movements to pinpoint the cause of nerve compression symptoms and make a diagnosis. Sometimes, where appropriate, referrals for an x-ray, MRI scan or consultation with a neurologist are recommended. In most cases, osteopathic treatment will involve using gentle focused movements to increase mobility of the spine coupled with massage and myofascial release to relevant areas of fascial and muscular tension. These methods reduce the mechanical forces at play in the neck, thereby reducing nerve compression and subsequent irritation. Although the trapped nerve causes pain, the real issue is poor posture. Osteopathic management includes restoring spinal alignment, stretching out tight muscles, and creating an exercise program to improve posture. Poor posture doesn’t always hurt, but it will catch up with you eventually.

Trapped nerves are usually associated with hours of sitting with poor posture, either at a desk at a computer, or staring down at smartphones and tablets, and driving. Sitting or standing hunched over, head forward is very hard on your body. All that bending can cause compression of nerves, and pain, numbness and tingling in the fingers. Further trauma and strain on the neck and spine resulting in neck pain can be caused by sports injuries, road traffic accidents, falling down the stairs, repetitive strain, sleeping awkwardly and inappropriate exercises. These faulty movement patterns and traumas can cause the spinal vertebrae to stiffen up instead of being able to move freely. When this happens, the joints in the spine do not move properly increasing the potential for strain with subsequent inflammation. These pressure changes cause irritation to the nerve next to it which then results in a trapped nerve.
If ignored, these symptoms may be more difficult to resolve with treatment. When the pressure is relieved, normal function returns rather quickly. On the other hand, if the pressure is not relieved, it can cause permanent damage to the nerve, leading to chronic pain.

BROWN SPOT BATTLES The darkening of an area of skin or nails is called hyperpigmentation. It is caused by an excess of skin pigment called melanin. The major cause of hyperpigmentation is the sun and people with darker skin tones are more prone to developing it. Another cause of hyperpigmentation is inflammation. This type, called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, develops after inflammation- eg acne lesions- has affected the skin. Hyperpigmentation can also be associated with several diseases or conditions eg hormonal problems (cortisol, oestrogen, insulin, and thyroid hormone have an effect on melanin production), certain genetic disorders, an iron overload etc.
The bad news is that hyperpigmentation in most cases is a permanent disorder that requires chronic treatment. The good news is that there are several ways to treat areas of increased pigment. • Get a good sunscreen to prevent new or worsening pigmentation. Use sunscreen 365 days of the year. Remember that UV rays are present even on cloudy and rainy days. If one is prone to hyperpigmentation, dark spots will always be more visible in summer. • Speak to your doctor about a topical treatment. There are several ingredients that have various degrees of effectiveness. Hydroquinone is a prescription bleaching cream that can be very effective in treating brown spots. Other ingredients which are
often in cosmetic products may cause a slight improvement. • There are procedures like laser, IPL (intense pulsed light), superficial and medium depth peels that can be effective. It is important to have these performed by an experienced doctor or therapist, because there is always a risk that the pigmentation can become worse after treatment. • For very resistant pigment there are wonderful products on the market that can cover pigmented lesions. I love Heliocare sunscreen (Gelcream) that acts as a foundation, covers spots and has anti-ageing properties. For an even better cover, also with a good SPF, you can try breathable Lycogel that is a very good option for acne prone skin.

Welcome to the future of aesthetics Renewal Institute now offers ground-breaking new solutions as opposed to individual treatments for the very best results.
A perfect example? While pigmentation will respond well to a peel that treats it on the surface, you’ll also get good results using a laser that can address the deeper layers of the skin. When you use both treatments together, however, this 3D approach yields the very best results.
Patients and doctors have spoken and Renewal Institute has listened. Having merged our many years of experience with the fact that we have access to a myriad of different cutting-edge technologies, we can proudly introduce the result - a new menu offering 130 ‘solutions’ as opposed to a list of individual treatments.
Great value
Each solution has been carefully developed with the feedback of doctors, therapists and patients. Each solution run the gamut from quick, lunch break procedures like microneedling performed along with the application of a targeted serum to those that include up to seven different treatments.
We’ve ranked our solutions by the intensity of the condition it’s designed to treat - from mild to severe - which is also useful to anyone on a budget, but your doctor will be able to recommend the solution that’s best while taking that into account. The solutions are also bundled in a way that is discounted, so the patient is always getting great value, regardless of which they choose.
Better together It’s been proven time and again that, when it comes to certain aesthetic treatments, the power of many is better than one. This is because you’re able to tackle the concern from multiple angles.

EXPLORING LAWN ALTERNATIVES Grass has always been the preferred choice of most homeowners but, with a bit of careful preparation and a little know how; you can create a completely different, low-maintenance garden. Yes, a lush green lawn is beautiful to look at, but in today’s time of drought and water shortages it’s no longer practical or sustainable. We need to look for alternatives, yet still be able to have a garden we can enjoy without worrying about the bleak, brown patch that was once a lawn! From gravel, pavers, rocks, cobbles, sleepers, stepping stones and hardy ground covers, there are many attractive alternatives to a lawn alone. Nothing takes up lawn space like a patio, paved pathway or an
intimate fire (conversation) pit, so consider building additional living areas to enjoy the garden. A paved pathway makes it easy to move through a garden and takes up the space of a patch of otherwise thirsty grass. Indigenous grasses are another lovely (and water wise) idea. Plant several of the same species together for a striking visual effect. Group according to height, tall at the back, shorter in front, they’ll add movement to your landscaping. Flowering succulents planted together in groups will provide a colourful display that will last for several months. Use drought-tolerant ground cover plants alone or in combination with other water-wise plants between pavers or flagstones. This will help soften the hard landscaping. Aloes, fynbos ( pin cushion and protea), coleoma, bucha, buddlija, searsia, gazania and
By Tracey Cole
delosperma, are all excellent replacements for water-thirsty lawns! Another thought, for a more ‘productive’ landscape, is a vegetable or herb garden or some fruit bushes and trees to replace the grass. The trees will also provide shade and retain soil moisture in the warmer months. Making the decision to part with your lawn may be difficult, but there are some amazing alternatives, and you will find your garden can be just as colourful and enjoyable with the added bonus of no more grass cutting!
