outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and say where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want

ED’S LETTER What’s not to love about September? The air (while still chilly) is literally crackling with the possibility of Spring. Of longer, warmer days and dining el fresco. It’s usually a great time for fresh outlooks and encourages us to be more motivated and strive for a rosier view of the future. And not a minute too soon- Cape Town winters are long. As our resident writer, Janet Winterbourne, puts it, it’s a chance to reflect and to ask yourself: “This is my life! How do I want to live it?” We all know change is hard, albeit in a professional or personal capacity. We also know that the world can be a dark and dangerous place. We’re inundated daily with news reports (often concerning deeply troubling events in our own backyards) that further emphasises this. However, it’s vital to stay positive. What is the alternative really? We ARE blessed to live in such a culturally diverse, scenically beautiful and all-round fabulous city. If we didn’t have anything to complain about it just wouldn’t seem fair. I don’t want to sound glib or diminish anyone’s struggles. They are real and there are many. I’ve just chosen to do my bit, help where I can and keep my chin up and pointed towards the future; with a smile (when the kids aren’t driving me nuts) on my face and a nice glass of wine. I hope you’re able to do the same. Happy Spring month. Here’s to new beginnings!

MARC TRAIN: THE SECRET TO GETTING AHEAD IS GETTING STARTED! By Danni Thunell Ende

Marc Train (24) is the co-owner of Cape Town’s first F45 training studio. Growing up on a farm in the Midlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal and attending Hilton College, Marc then relocated to Australia, where he spent the past two years working in the financial sector in various positions including an Equity Analyst and Private Wealth Specialist. He also holds a Master of Business Management from Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Bcomm), financial planning and investment analysis from the University of Stellenbosch. A true entrepreneur, we wanted to find out more about his latest venture. What sparked your interest in health and fitness? Health and fitness have always been a passion of mine. I enjoyed competitive sport throughout high school and varsity. I am a firm believer in a healthy body, healthy mind, therefore ensuring I am always active is a fundamental part of my day. How did you come to own an F45 franchise? I came across F45 Training when I lived in Sydney. F45 had such a large presence in Australia with a studio virtually on every street corner. South Africans are naturally active in nature and I believe there is an opportunity for F45 to become a household name in SA. My passion for health and fitness combined with the amazing business model F45 has resulted in me approaching my current business partner (owner of two studios in Sydney) to expand internationally to South Africa. Our first studio has been launched in Camps Bay with the expectation to launch in other provinces in South Africa soon.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs? Mark Twain said: “The secret to getting ahead, is getting started”. This is an important part of entrepreneurship. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can assist you in getting your venture over the line. It is important to fully understand the market you are entering into and to identify the need that you will fulfil rather than trying to push a product or service. There is never a perfect time to start a business, you just need to start. What do you love most about living in Cape Town? Cape Town offers so many different aspects. Beautiful beaches, picturesque mountain ranges and amazing people all within walking distance of each other. It really is difficult to find a substitute for this amazing city. What motivates you to succeed? I am always striving to be the best version of myself. This means a 100% commitment to everything that I

Marc Train & Lee Thompson

do. I am always trying to push the barriers of conformity to achieve success not only in business but in life. Leveraging a strong support base in family and friends is a real driving force behind those who are successful. Ensure you have this support base while you are starting up a new venture. Life constantly throws curve balls at you. It’s how you handle these set-backs which ultimately determines success. What’s the secret to staying in great shape? Having a good balance is always important. Ensuring that you are consistent in your exercise routine but also allowing yourself to indulge in life’s pleasures. Having a clear goal to work toward will allow you to keep yourself honest to your training plan. Set yourself milestones according to what you are trying to achieve and reward yourself for reaching these milestones.

While this practice has been in existence for 25 years and offers a fairly wide range of niche services, Charlene’s personal passion lies with property law and conveyancing. This entails “going the extra mile” sometimes, assisting clients who are either buying or selling their properties by “holding their hands”, offering independent advice on the process and how to avoid potential pitfalls, how to save money by being informed of their options in negotiations, or ensuring their intention matches the wording in the contract to avoid unwanted consequences.

JUST INTERIOR DESIGN Who is Just Interior Design? We are a small interior design firm, based in Cape Town, but do work nationwide. Our mission is to merge personal functionality with visual appeal to create inspired design. No matter what the size of the project, be it for concept and design only, to procurement and full turn-key renovations, we pay particular attention to ensure all your personal needs are met. My experience extends from having worked in the developing Ballito area and some work in Johannesburg before moving to Cape Town. What is your vision for the company? Our vision is to fully understand our clients needs and translate their interests and desires to create an engaging space that brings you both enjoyment and pure bliss; a truly bespoke environment. How was the idea for the business conceptualised? Two factors motivated my decision to start Just Interior Design. One being the lack of job opportunities in Cape Town as the interior design market is flooded with small businesses, and I wanted to have more freedom in my work. And two, my father offered me the opportunity to start a partnership with him and that just made sense. Me being the design mind and him the accounting guru seemed like the perfect match. What drew you to interior design? My passion for interior design began after a family holiday to Australia. We returned home to find the house covered in mould and most of the joinery

destroyed by the burst geyser. My parents then contracted an interior design firm to do a complete renovation which my mother and I assisted with. We would review the designers drawings and make our changes to better suit our family’s needs. I used to visit the site every day to see the progress as I found every step so interesting. Since then I have been reading articles, looking at pictures and visiting sites. There is just so much to love about interior design. What is one of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on? One of my most exciting and most challenging projects is currently underway and is my first project in Cape Town. The reason this project is so exciting is the location and the client. The challenges have been sourcing good joiners and other tradesmen. This client afforded me the opportunity to source and use some amazing pieces of imported furniture and to play around with some custom designed pieces. My favourite item is the Paul Smith rug custom made for the living room area. It’s a piece of art on its own. I’m so looking forward to the completion of this project and to have it photographed, so keep an eye on our social media pages and website to see the final result. Where do you draw inspiration from? I draw inspiration from absolutely everywhere. I am constantly on social media looking at images and how pieces function for their purpose; I Google almost everything; I have this need to know how things work and why they were made. In terms of functionality, I draw this creativity from

my own life. It is great to have incredible looking joinery or furniture but it is pointless if it isn’t functional for you and your family. How do you stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry? The interior design industry is a fascinating one. Every day, every minute, someone is designing something staggering. With this being said, I feel the only way to stay ahead, or at least keep up with the industry, is to grow and develop with it by designing ones own unique pieces. These usually develop from the challenging elements of my projects and solving these challenges evolves into ingenious design elements or pieces. What makes you stand out from your competitors? I think working on my own, I’m able to build a more personal and special relationship with my client. This helps me, the designer, to develop a more individual design tailored to the client’s needs and desires, as well as all the other home or office residents, and yes this includes your pets. A space must function for its intended purpose and include your prerequisites, but this doesn’t mean it can’t be spectacularly beautiful as well. It is my mission to amalgamate these two elements into one seamless design to fulfil your dream. Is anyone a client, big or small? Absolutely! If you’re looking for a scatter cushion or building a new house, I will be more than happy to work with you.

MY LOVE OF COOKING…

By Denise Cowburn-Levy

Food has always been a BIG thing in our family – we celebrate everything and as often as possible. Life is too short not to, and we are so blessed to live an abundant life. Food allows me to show love for others in an easy way, a physical manifestation of what I can’t always put into words. It is my language of love, personal and from my heart, and it is very powerful. The communal preparation and eating of food brings people together, and I find that this can dissolve any tensions that may be going on in the family. Our kitchen has always been the heart of the home. What fascinates me over and over again is the ability of food and wine to heighten any experience and to bring people together. No matter how tiring your day has been, how many things you had to deal with, the stress and the pressure, when you grab that knife, pull out a wooden board and begin to chop, something happens. We become grounded and focused, as when we have a sharp knife in our hand, or we are tasting a sauce to see exactly what it needs to make it perfect, we have to be very present, something

we all strive for in our hectic lives. For a short while, the outside world ceases to exist, and we leave anything that was bothering us way behind. This gathering of the clan around the table is a tradition that was clearly born many generations ago. Food memories are powerful, and a mere whiff of cinnamon and warm spices can transport me back in a sec to another time and place. I see myself standing on a stool, “helping” Mom with the Christmas cake at that kitchen table, long wooden spoon in hand and small fingers dipping surreptitiously into the batter whenever I thought she wasn’t looking. When I see the freshest of produce glistening on the market shelves, and as I walk through aroma-filled spice markets, with the splashes of bright colours and gorgeous textures, intuitively I start to compose a symphony in my head. Like a conductor, I cue in the various ingredients, carefully chosen, in perfect order and sequence, and a masterpiece is created.

I’ve just had a profound realization….I am NOT a cook, I am a composer. Or am I a conductor? My instruments are the different ingredients I choose with care to put into the dish. I feel like a sorceress, brewing a magic potion, or perhaps a magician with a wand in hand, as I call in the next ingredient to add into the mix, in the perfect timing, to create a balanced and harmonious melody of a meal. Then there is the importance of the setting of THE TABLE, the ritual and the ceremony attached to eating consciously. Make it special, make it beautiful. Keep it simple, or go all out glamour… be creative, play! I am very much for making this an occasion where possible. Now I encourage you to head for the kitchen, have some fun and make that magic happen!

Osteopathy is based on the perfection of Nature’s work. When all parts of the human body are in line we have health. When they are not the effect is disease. Dr. A.T. Still—Osteopathy Research and Practice

and a slightly caved in chest. This posture stops the rib cage opening up and makes the mid back area tight and often painful. Breathing problems come in a variety of forms depending on the patient. For example, muscles in the ribs, upper chest and neck all support breathing. Rapid and shallow breaths put additional burden on these muscles. This is often caused by stress. In order for the rest of the body to function optimally, the spine must have normal mobility and natural postural curvature. Nerves in the body, that supply your internal organs, start in your spinal column and branch out into the body. Because of the location of the upper back (thoracic) nerves, and the other parts of the body that they help control, if there is a misalignment within the spine, the thoracic nerves can be negatively impacted. Common results related to mobility and natural posture of the spine include problems with the lungs expanding and contracting (or inhaling and exhaling). The thoracic nerves become pinched or congested which may result in some type of breathing issue. Some people breathe only with the upper ribs, which means that they are not fully lowering the diaphragm and expanding the lungs and in doing so are not making full use of their lung capacity. This kind of shallow breathing is how you may breathe if you feel anxious or depressed, it can also induce stress and tension; these are contributory factors in many illnesses and diseases.

Whether due to allergies or chronic issues, such as asthma, bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breathing issues can reduce patients’ quality of life. There are different causes and reasons for breathing problems. Poor posture, physical stiffness, tense shoulders, neck or back pain can lead to breathing problems, and at the same time, breathing problems can actually cause poor posture, neck or back pain. This can disturb the natural balance of the body and is often correlated with other health issues including: poor digestion; fatigue; tension headaches. Many people have sedentary lifestyles. A posture often seen during sitting, is the head forward, with rounded shoulders

In Osteopathic treatment, patients often present with pain, dysfunction or mobility issues. Patients suffering from back or neck pain sometimes report some type of breathing problem. An osteopath will take a full medical history, provide a thorough evaluation, and discuss treatment options with you. Osteopathic care may be able to reduce respiratory problems through spinal manipulative therapy by reducing the effect that these misalignments and abnormalities have on the nervous system. Mobilising and articulating the spine can also increase the mobility of the thoracic cage, mobilise the ribs, and enhance blood flow in the lungs. Relaxing and reducing tension in the respiratory muscles freeing, muscular and fascial restrictions of the ribs and spine, improving lymphatic drainage from the lungs and enabling you to take deeper breaths and use oxygen more effectively. This is useful for asthmatics and those with breathing difficulties and respiratory conditions. Osteopaths will use a variety of hands-on techniques, including soft tissue stretching and massage, myofascial release, cranial osteopathy along with articulation and mobilisation of the joints. Osteopaths work in conjunction with other health care professionals, with the long term aim of improving the person’s quality of life and helping to reduce the negative effects of breathing conditions. Osteopaths can also advise you on breathing and how to maintain a healthy posture which in turn is essential for healthy breathing.

SPRING INTO A NEW BEGINNING!

By Janet Winterbourne

Spring is in the air, and for some, it’s usually a time of fresh outlooks, emerging from the hibernation of winter and having an enthusiastic outlook on the future. A difficult approach to adopt given the swathe of bad news locally and abroad of late, and there have been many tragic events that have us naturally wondering what on earth is going on with people and the world? This time of new beginnings can be an opportunity to check in with oneself and ask where am I? What do I want? and Where do I want to go?

That’s the idea of new beginnings. You start off with a clean slate, wipe away all the past stuff that’s negative and which was a downer, and focus on that which is optimistic and encouraging. Why not? It doesn’t cost you any more to be upbeat than critical. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It’s like putting money in the bank because you are doing something very good for yourself which will pay big dividends. Being critical is withdrawing funds and can soon leave you bankrupt, without motivation and hope. Mary is a 40-something married mother of three adolescents. She has a small home business that she fits in between running the household. She doesn’t have much time for herself because of all the demands in her life. Her husband is supportive but he too is very busy with his career. Lately, Mary has been feeling flat, she’s tired, a little overweight, and concerned that she hasn’t had much time to take care of herself. At a party, she saw some of her girlfriends and they talked about how busy they are and how little

“me time” they all have, and in some ways have given up on making any changes. When Mary got home, she felt determined to start on a different foot. She saw an ad for a fitness club offering a discount on an annual membership. She decided to join and for a full month, she took advantage of the exercise classes and pool. She enjoyed the time she spent with others exercising and being able to “free” her mind. However, she soon fell behind in meeting her family, home, and business obligations. She also wasn’t too crazy about following-up on the exercises when she was at home and watching her diet. Within a few weeks after joining the club, Mary stopped going. Before too long, she was back to her old ways and life but with a new problem—the belief that this was all she could expect to have. Mary’s situation is not that uncommon; in fact, it’s far too common. She was able to realise some of the problematic issues she had in her life, and made an effort to change them. But, the effort was short lived. Why?

Making changes in your life should be done because you really want to and can see the benefits of it. The changes you want to make should enhance your life and help you fulfil your dreams. But you also have to be realistic and know that these changes may not come easily. Especially if you’re changing a long-standing pattern. •

You have to make a COMMITMENT to yourself that you will do this because you believe it is psychologically and/or physically good for you. It is these beliefs that you will fall back on when you feel frustrated or thwarted by situations and people who may try to derail your dreams.

It’s important to understand that when one person makes changes, it has a ripple effect. The changes in that person may affect others. For example, if Mary is devoting less time to her housework, someone has to pick up the slack or the family lives in a mess. When one person tries to change, she or he may get some, a lot, or no support from others, which can affect how successful the change will be.

It always helps to have someone who encourages and supports you. But, ultimately, you have to believe in yourself and that even if you fall down (which we all do, sometimes a lot), you will be able to pick yourself up, start again, and achieve your dreams.

We all know how hard it is to change when you are stuck in a routine. It takes a lot of: • effort • determination • will power • endurance in the face of obstacles • time and • self promotion

Prevent premature ageing NOW! The Renewal Institute believes preventing premature ageing is a long game so the best time to start is as soon as possible. 1. See the light

A beta hydroxy peel requires no down time and uses salicylic acid to exfoliate your skin’s surface as well as deep inside your pores. A series reveals a brighter, more refined-looking complexion and improves the look of acne and pigmentation.

The words ‘laser treatment’ sound intimidating but Skin Renewal has several painless laser and light options that require zero down time yet make a big difference.

3. Let’s go meso!

Both Photo Dynamic Therapy (which uses light at varying wavelengths to stimulate the deeper tissues of your skin) and Laser Genesis Rejuvenation, a true laser, work on any skin type and colour. They can soften fine lines, improve skin tone, stimulate wound healing, diminish acne and reduce inflammation.

Transdermal mesotherapy involves using gentle electrical pulses and vibrations to transfer an elixir of beneficial ingredients into your skin. Skin Renewal’s rejuvenating solution contains ingredients that encourage collagen as well as ultra-hydrating hyaluronic acid to plump instantly as well as over time.

2. Peel and reveal Don’t underestimate the power of exfoliation! A single microdermabrasion treatment produces a glow and pores that look more refined. Several of them can soften fine lines and mitigate pigmentation before it becomes entrenched.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOIL AND HOW THEY AFFECT OUR PLANTS

By Tracey Cole

Soil is a pretty boring subject, but has great relevance as far as your plants are concerned! Generally speaking, soil falls into two main types - Sandy soil or Clay soil, and this dictates the type of plant that will thrive in these soils. Sandy soil has its advantages. It drains well, is easy to dig in and warms up faster in Spring than clay soil, meaning that plants start growing earlier. However, there are fewer species adapted to it compared to clay soil and it doesn’t hold on to either water or nutrients for long. You can improve sandy soil by working in 3” to 4” of organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or compost. A mulch around your plants with leaves, wood chips, hay or straw. Mulching retains moisture and cools the soil. Add at least 2” of organic matter each year and grow green manure to dig in. Any tap-rooted vegetables do well in sandy soil, for example carrots, beets and radishes. Some fruit trees such as apricot, peach and sweet cherry also cope well with this soil. Herbs, which need good drainage, thrive in sandy soil.

Lavender is extremely tolerant and only needs watering to get it established. Artimesa, Rosemary, Salvia, Sweet Alyssum (loved by butterflies, smells like honey!), Buddlia (butterfly bush), Siberian Pea shrub, Mimosa, Eucalyptus, Helichrysum (everlasting silver bush), Dianthus, Perlagoniums, Dune Daisy, Silver Aretotis, Yellow Mallow, Rose of Sharon, and Black Locust will thrive in sandy soil. Succulents also do well. Clay soil can be very challenging! It is very moisture retentive, therefore heavy and prone to water-logging. When wet it sticks together so strongly that trying to dig it is backbreaking, and when dry it bakes so solid it’s like concrete! However, on the plus side, it retains important plant nutrients so it

tends to be very fertile. Mixing in large amounts of organic matter, in the form of leaves, hay, bark mulch, peat moss and untreated grass clippings will all help to make clay soil more workable. Roses love a clay soil. Miscanthus as ornamental grasses do very well in clay too. Heuchera, Hosta, Aster, Rudbeckia, Plumbago, Carissa Macrocarpa, Aloe, Buddlia, Salvia, and Gazanias all tolerate clay soil. If you want to grow vegetables, then raised beds are definitely the easiest and best option. Apple and pear trees grow happily in the heavy clay soil. Whatever your soil type, there’s a plant out there that will love it!
