It feels as if they’ve only just packed the Christmas decorations away and the shops are already festooned with Easter bunnies. It’s hard to get any work done in Aprilwith school holidays, public holidays and Easter- not that I’m complaining. I’m certainly looking forward to some quality time with the children not governed by the regimen of early morning drop offs and extra-curricular lifting. There’s big talk of cutting out homework for school going children. In many European countries, they’ve already achieved this and it would seem our educational system is a little behind the curve. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when I recently learnt that several of our local primary schools have eliminated home work. Could this be the start of a new era? So much of our lives are strictly scheduled, I firmly believe young children should have as much time as possible to play, dream and be carefree. Although I’d admit it’s a contentious subject. We all know behind every man is a great woman and our cover star, Frankie Fleck, is a prime example. Enjoy your time off and your guilt free chocolate indulgences. After all, someone needs to help the children finish their eggs.

Frankie Fleck:AN ENTREPRENEUR AT HEART!

By Danni Thunell Ende

Most of us have heard the name Robbie Fleck, and for sports fans, they know he’s the current head coach of The Stormers Super Rugby Team. But what some of us may not know is that his talented wife, Frankie, has enjoyed substantial business success. She has a thriving property business, providing luxury holiday rentals. A busy mother of two boys, when asked how she juggles it all, she replied with a modest, “Somehow we just do!” What inspired you to launch Kommetjie Hideaways all those years ago? We have a home in Kommetjie that we rent out every year. At the time, I was very unhappy with the service we were getting and decided to do it myself. Word spread and suddenly I had a little business that has now been successfully running for just under 5 years. Tell us about your latest business venture? Based on the success and reputation of Kommetjie Hideaways, I have had numerous people approach me to do the same thing in the areas in which they live and love. I then started Cape Hideaways as an umbrella brand and to date have 5 franchises around Cape Town with a few more soon to be launched. The newest being Camps Bay Hideaways which we are very excited about! Please visit us at www.capehideaways.co.za for further information on renting a home or adding your home to our portfolio. What’s been your experience of being married to a professional sportsman? For me it is just a way of life. Rob and I have been dating since I was 18 so it really is all I know. Fortunately, I am very independent and busy!

Do your children play rugby? Yes! Jack (8) and Jamie (6) LOVE rugby. They are lucky enough to go to Stormers practices and games with their dad. It’s definitely in their blood. How do you manage to balance your and Robbie’s busy schedules with family life? Somehow we just do! The boys are at an easy age and love school. They are at Western Province Preparatory School. Fortunately, they like nothing more than to spend their afternoons playing cricket, rugby or just kicking a ball for hours on end- so, I manage to get a lot done in a day. We then spend quiet evenings together in our home on the beach in Kommetjie. What’s your favourite way to unwind when you both have time off? We have a Saturday routine of a run and swim on the beach followed by samosas in Kommetjie and possibly a surf or SUP later. We then see friends for a braai or evening out. Otherwise we just enjoy time on the beach with our boys or with friends. How did you and Robbie meet? We met when I was 14 and he was 15. We were at a school social.

Do you have any advice for other aspiring woman entrepreneurs? I have never felt that I was any different to a man with regards to my career and I am an entrepreneur at heart. I think you just need to find something you enjoy, have a vision of what you want it to become and give it everything. What book is on your bedside table? ‘The Seven Sisters’ by Lucinda Riley. What is the most played artist on your iPod? Probably Adele or Coldplay - no specific album. What’s your favourite restaurant to eat at? There are so many but Il Leone restaurant or La Colombe.

DON’T BE FOOLISH By Richard Thompson

1 April has recently come and gone and whilst that date is known for jokes, tricks and humourous deceits, there is nothing funny about being made a “fool” of when it comes to your commercial dealings!

we at Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys possess a wealth of experience that enables us to assist you in creating agreements that will best represent your needs and requirements in all spheres of your business and personal lives.

Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys is a relatively small law practise operating out of the Constantia and Hout Bay regions of Cape Town. One of the sides to our business, the other being conveyancing, is the commercial and litigation department and one of the services we offer is the drafting, negotiating, and reviewing of contracts and agreements of all shapes and sizes.

In today’s sophisticated business world, using “cookie-cutter” form contracts is a dangerous and potentially costly gamble as there are many different nuances and factual scenarios that are unique to each person and business.

Whether it be agreements of sale for movable and immovable property, employment contracts, shareholders’ and members’ agreements, distribution and agency agreements, leases or any other contract that suits your personal needs, ATTORNEYS . CONVEYANCERS . NOTARIES

We pride ourselves on being client-centric, precise draftsmen and creative problem-solvers who make sure that we familiarise ourselves with the minute details of your business, the transaction involved, and the applicable laws in order to provide you with the best possible outcome, thereby ensuring that your commercial manoeuvres do not turn out to be “fool’s gold”!

FOOTSTEPS, LEGACIES AND TODAY Recently I was struck by a wonderful Facebook post, which I went on to share on my coaching page – it read as follows: “A father said to his son: ‘be careful where you walk’. The son responded: ‘you be careful, I walk in your footsteps’.”

It reminded me of how each of our daily actions, whether as teacher; parent; family member; counsellor; professional; priest; friend or another role we have, has an impact on the lives of others. Although not everybody aspires to be a recognised leader in the formal sense, each of us has the opportunity to choose to walk a path that ensures a life well lived. Outside of the a medical prognostic determination of how much time we have left, none of us know how long we have to build the dream(s) we aspire to and or make the difference that is so important for us to make. Tomorrow may not always be

14

‘another day’ to get things right and time may not always be on our side to illustrate, share and or teach others the way forward. It is therefore imperative that we consciously walk in a manner that those who follow can learn and benefit from the path we make. When chatting with an older client some time ago he noted his frustration at wanting to do so much with this life in terms of getting involved with various initiatives, and he was battling as how to divide his time between them. When allocating percentages of time to each passion, project and interest he found that the sum of his time added up to 150% - clearly 50% more than he was capable of offering! This realisation led to the discussion of how to choose between the various options open to him, and how to determine which he should delete off his list. The only way he could eventually make sense of the challenge was to consider the size and shape of the footsteps he wanted to leave imprinted in the

hearts and minds of those he loved. The exercise forced my client to face the fact that one day all that would be left of his presence in this life would be the legacy he left behind. And thus his choices needed to be made carefully, from within his heart. What he chose was ultimately intuitively discovered, rather than driven from cognitive, calculated reason, ensuring that his footsteps would always be in sync with having lived, loved and left a legacy flowing from his best self. Each new day is an opportunity to create paths that, if carefully chosen, leave footprints leading to the memory of the best of us and the unfolding of a better life for those we leave behind.

WHAT SETS SKIN PEELS APART? Chemical peels are known to show great results across a multitude of skin conditions, but at the same time, the thought of peeling your skin off your face, scares most people. It is a scary thought, and rightly so, because if not done correctly, it can cause severe damage to the skin. To ensure that the right peel is used in the correct manner, it is important to consult a person in the know. Even though spa’s and some hair salons offer chemical peels, it is recommended to have these treatments done at a medical spa or at a dermatologist, starting with a very thorough consultation, conducted by a medical doctor. Different acids are used to formulate different peels, all with different effects on the skin. Skin issues such as fine and severe lines, acne, acne

scarring, rough texture, oily skin, pigmentation, sun damage and even Melasma can all be addressed by using peels. Once the desired results have been discussed with the medical doctor, they will confirm which peel is best suited to your condition and skin type, and a treatment plan will be worked out. Depending on the severity of the condition, a series of treatments will be recommended, with the required time period between treatments clearly stipulated. Chemical peels vary greatly in strength – from superficial peels to more invasive peels. The stronger and more aggressive the peels are, the more downtime it requires, and the more expensive it generally is. Aggressive peels should, however, only be administered by trained medical doctors, or trained therapists

who work under a DR’s supervision, as it is a procedure that carries a certain amount of risk if not done by recordable hands. Regular peels should form an essential part of your skin regime and some peels do not even have down time. The skin is renewed by peels by means of the following: • Removes old skin to rejuvenated new improved skin • Resurfacing and remodelling of deep skin conditions such as acne scarring, lines and wrinkles • Slow’s down the chronological age of ones skin (even those with good skin). • Repairs photo damage and skin discolorations • Specific pre- and post care procedures are required before and after a chemical peel. These are discussed during the consulta-

tion, and it is important to follow these instructions closely. Staying out of the sun after a medium or deep peel is one of the most important considerations, as exposure to the sun causes pigmentation. This must be considered before committing to a series of peels, and therefor treatments are often recommended during the winter months. Superficial peels can however be performed throughout the year for maintenance and to prevent pigmentation relapses, provided homecare instructions are strictly adhered to.

For more information on peels contact Skin Renewal on 0861 7546 72 (SKIN SA) or visit www.skinrenewal.co.za

SCRUM POSTURE FOR CHILDREN By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

“The scrum and the tackle are the two really contentious areas of the game. If you get those two aspects right, most rugby matches will work in your favour.” Alan Lewis - Rugby union referee

vital. Every individual must maintain a good body position that keeps their spine in the best possible position to tolerate compressive loads and better transmit force. The spine must remain in a neutral position whilst retaining natural spinal curves but avoid being flexed or rounded. A rounded spinal position not only reduces the transfer of force through the scrum, but also compromises the health of the spine and risks injury. Equally the spine should not be forced and loaded into extension as this is never a healthy position for the spine. Aches and pains in the back should not dismissed as just part of the game in rugby or any other sport as this may lead to chronic issues, especially if untreated. Because of growth, young sports persons are susceptible to injury, particularly during the growth spurt of adolescence. Back pain is often misunderstood and no one should just ‘grin and bear it’ by just taking medication.

Safety in the scrum is of absolute importance in the game due to the potential for neck and lower back spinal stress. Spinal dysfunction, associated nerve irritation and poor posture impact on muscular function, key for strength, speed, flexibility, coordination and agility all of which are important for a player to perform at their best and to avoid injury. Scrums require technique and are about the individual getting themselves in the right position and not just size. In the scrum, good posture is

By getting children scrummaging correctly with good posture they are more likely do so throughout their growth and development. If children are not educated about dynamic posture in the scrum combined with good posture in the classroom, injuries in rugby are more likely to occur. Good posture should better enable your child to hold a strong and straight position and hold their own in the scrum. Players should to be able to demonstrate the postural strength required to maintain a neutral spine while in a scrum position before being

allowed to progress into fully opposed scrummaging. To introduce this skill safely scrum gradually with individual on individual whilst on the knees. This basic scrum posture should be maintained by every player in the scrum. Head in neutral position keeping your neck aligned with the back, looking up through your eyebrows. Shoulder blades back, pull your arms in close at either side of your chest so that the muscles in your back tense. Chest pushed out like a Gorilla – and maintain posture. Hips tilted (bum pointing out/up) while creating a natural concave curve in your lower back. Knees slightly bent. Feet shoulder-width apart. Due to the stress that playing rugby has on a spine it makes common sense that rugby players of every age are checked by an osteopath for spinal dysfunction/mobility and posture especially kids with growing and developing spines. Osteopathic treatment and advice helps promote spinal health, encouraging bio-mechanically efficient posture and allowing the musculoskeletal, nervous and circulatory systems to recover faster from injury. In addition to this, osteopathic principles, medical and bio-mechanical knowledge may help to encourage optimal recovery from injury, reduce the risk of injury and improve performance. This is achieved through osteopathic hands on treatment (subtle joint release, massage, stretching, myofascial release), realistic postural and biomechanically orientated exercise advise.

A successful bathroom design is a collaboration of balance, scale, functionality and proportion. Layering all these elements together creates your unique expression of style. There needs to be a harmonious relationship between all the elements in order to achieve your dream bathroom design. Florstore OnTrend’s, Leigh-Anne reiterates that bathrooms are no longer clinical and cold but rather an oasis of indulgence where the sky’s the limit. The selection of bathroomware available is limitless! However, what is important to focus on, is quality and service above all else. Invest in the highest quality materials and don’t take any short cuts. At Florstore OnTrend, we provide gratis consulting on your bathroom build and have a vast array of bathroom vanities, accessories, taps, baths, basins and toilets suited to your taste and needs. Whether it’s Kaldawei ceramic baths in classic white or Livingstone resin baths in bold black or shimmering metallic with matching custom-made Zoe Ideas paper holders and Frost robe hooks or Jeeves’ heated towel rails, Florstore OnTrend is your once-stop destination. To finish off your perfect bathroom, make sure to invest in flooring that sets the stage for your beautiful bathroom. Monochrome marbles are still trending; clean lines are always nice; but patterned feature floors and walls are becoming increasingly popular. The Florstore OnTrend team is happy to welcome you into their showroom and assist in creating the perfect bathroom for you.
