The Christmas countdown has officially begun, gold. I’ve personally started stashing bits and pieces away, to try and avoid that last-minute rush to the shops. The festive season is both a delightful and incredibly stressful time of

year; a rather interesting juxtaposition. Whilst

it’s lovely to have some time off (hopefully) we generally have visitors to stay, the roads are

carnage, the shops are packed, and everyone

is desperately trying to “make the most” of their time off; perhaps instead of simply just being.

I’d like to try and be more present this season

and try to enjoy the moment. To not completely overindulge to the point where (come January) I need to work hard to rewind the damage, to enjoy spending quality time (away from the

busy shops and restaurants) with family and

close friends and attempt to spend more time on the beach and in nature. This all sounds rather idyllic but it’s at least a good starting point. Whatever your goals are this festive

JO-ANN STRAUSS: IF IT’S TO BE IT’S UP TO ME By Danni Thunell Ende

There are not many people who can rival the vast and impressive career Jo-Ann has carved out for herself over the past two decades. Both locally and abroad she’s known for her seamless ability to integrate her unique, witty charm whilst taking the audience on an entertaining and insightful journey whilst hosting events. She sits on the boards of Media24, M&C Saatchi Abel, Village n Life amongst others and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Her list of accolades is endless. Congratulations on baby #3 – how is it all going? My daughter was born on the 4th of July- America’s Independence Day. She’s already Ms Independent. It’s going very well. It’s almost as if she understands the lifestyle we lead is a little unconventional. She’s already been to Paris fashion week and the Ryder Cup for instance and has 3 stamps in her passport. I see you’re an avid supporter of, and advocator for, breastfeeding. I’m constantly travelling with my breast pump. I do believe ‘breast is best’, but I don’t judge. I simply feel that if you are able to, then you should. How do find a bit of calm in the storm? I switch off the internet in the house at times. We live in a world of hyper connectivity. Arianna Huffington recently spoke about how we live in a world where we applaud people on the verge of burn out. I see how we are surrounded by a lot of leadership that’s emotionally drained. I want to be physically and emotionally healthy, so I can be there in the best possible way for my children. Do you have any rules for yourself in terms of ‘unplugging’ from technology? It’s not structured as such. There are of course unavoidable deadlines. For instance, my husband and I ended up having a cup of coffee at 1am in the morning to catch up. But we are also trying to plan for more calm in our lives and to try work smarter, not harder. How will you navigate this path with your children to ensure a healthy balance? Technology is something I want them to embrace. However, tech shouldn’t engulf them. They should be the consumer rather than the other way around. We can’t beat the machine trying to be a machine, we need to be people. The machines can’t outdo our

children’s creativity. I want them to remain human and as unscathed as possible. What are some of your current goals? My over-riding goal is balance. Living consciously. Being more present. We do read a lot but would like to read more. Whilst working for Top Billing, which interview stands out for you the most and why? George Clooney was one of my favourites. I’m such a fan of his work. I love how he’s managed to use his influence for such good. He’s married a very intelligent woman which shows that he’s not intimidated by strong, intelligent women. At the time he was doing the movie Syriana. It was very interesting discussing politics with him. I was trying to keep my wits about me. I could feel that at first he was testing me and then we had a really great conversation. Secondly, it would be interviewing Charlize Theron on my birthday in Berlin. She sang happy birthday to me in Afrikaans! If you had a magic wand what would you change about South Africa? I would create more meaningful employment. As humans we all have a deep need to make a meaningful contribution. Unemployment drives so much despondency, a loss of self-worth and ultimately, more crime. What’s the most important life lesson you’d like to teach your children? It comes from a quote: “If it’s to be it’s up to me.” It’s a wonderful way to say that you have to take responsibility for your future and your own dreams. Another is, “Umntu ngumntu ngabantu,” which translates into “A person is a person through others.” In the pursuit of success and one’s dreams, one should never lose sight of the fact that we’re all human. Be kind.

How do you stay neutral on social media and not get personally affected? I try to not engage in fights on social media. I don’t display my children’s faces online. I’m very mindful of what I post. People can get the wrong impression. Instagram is a curated version of your life. People think that’s how you live. I try to be responsible. What is one of the ventures you’re involved in that you’re super proud of? I sit on the board of Village n Life. I’m passionate about tourism and developing people. www.villagenlife.com

THERE IS A LOT WE CAN LEARN FROM THE ITALIAN WAY OF LIFE!

I often wake up very early and as I lie in bed, slowly regaining consciousness, words, thoughts and images start swirling around in my head, literally knocking against the walls of my brain, wanting to be expressed. As much as I try to get a few more hours of shuteye, the exercise is futile. As quietly as I can, so as not to disturb the gentle, rhythmic breathing of my husband, I creep out grabbing my laptop and a warm jersey. This morning I wake up in Lake Como, Italy, in a very special place set right on the shore at the water’s edge. I cannot see it yet as it is still dark, but I can hear the lapping of the waves on the shore, such a soothing, comforting sound. My thoughts this morning are of the Italian people and their attitude to life and the seasons. I think about the simple rituals that they follow that are so real and so much a part of their everyday life. Do you ever see an Italian running frantically down the street to the office with a take-away cappuccino clenched into a tight fist? Good heavens no! What are cafés for? This is where you pop in to your favourite local, with

a warm welcome greeting of “Buon Giorno! Un cappuccino e un cornetto, por favore, signor.” And there, leaning against the counter, one engages and chats with all who are in earshot, regardless of whether you know them or not, this is irrelevant. What a lovely civilised way to begin the day. We seem to have lost this art in our daily rush. Would that extra ten minutes spent chatting and drinking coffee at the coffee shop really affect your productivity for the day? Yes, actually I believe it would, but for the better. Autumn is in the air here, and as the trees turn various shades of gold and russet, one can feel the definite shift in the seasons. It has been a long Summer, with many ‘al fresco’ family feasts set on long tables as the clan of young to old gather to celebrate life. All generations are

always included here; food and laughter shared generously. But now it is time to move indoors and light the fire, to go within and take time to reflect. Shutters start to close earlier, keeping in the warmth. Time to preserve the last of the Summer produce to savour in the cold months ahead. Hearty soups, slow cooked casseroles and roasts are now the order of the day. One learns to take the warmth needed to thrive in the cold, through the food one eats, when the sun no longer provides it. I like this way of life, the respect for the seasons. There is a lot we can learn from the Italian way of life, La Dolce Vita.

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD IN A DANGEROUS ONLINE WORLD Take steps now Fortunately, there are some practical steps parents can take to protect their children. For one, teach them not to share any personal information online, be it friend or stranger. Under no circumstances meet a stranger face to face and, importantly, provide them with the platform to talk to honestly about any requests or interaction that might feel uncomfortable. Secondly, invest in reputable security software that will enable you to proactively monitor and control your child’s online activities. Bitdefender Internet Security 2019 and Total Security 2019 security software options come with a compelling Parental Control feature. The online world is a treacherous obstacle course filled with deep and harmful craters. Even more so for children who often can’t distinguish friend from foe. In fact, multiple profiles can be created such as “week profile” and “weekend profile”. Obviously, your child will still be able to contact you or make an emergency the call during this “restricted” time. Once the above is created, parents will then have access to Children Activity Reports, provided via e-mail daily, weekly or monthly. These activity reports will give parents insight into important information such: Attempts to access blocked apps and websites; Blocked call attempts; Children entering safe or restricted locations The above is undoubtedly a comprehensive set of features that can arm parents with the tools to effectively fight the perils of the online world, ultimately protecting their children against predators, cyber criminals, bullies and more.

Tyres should be treated with the respect they deserve. They are the hardest working and often the most neglected component on one’s car.

MESSAGE OF FOUR POST CARDS Imagine the size of an average post card -- this is the size of the patch of tyre that connects with the road. Think of all that must happen between these patches and the road: braking, cornering, water dispersion and all the traction forces in all directions. The ‘message of the post cards’ analogy is simple and that is to make sure the four patches of tyre are of the best quality you can afford. Even if one drives a five-star n-cap rated vehicle with all the safety features on offer, it won’t count for anything if one has four patches of poor quality! ROLLING RESISTANCE Rolling resistance is the characteristic or ability of a tyre to resist being rolled. It has nothing to do with the vehicle weight. It’s purely the fact that tyres don’t like rolling which sounds strange because that’s what they do all day long. On average, your car tyres use 20% or 1/5th of the vehicle’s energy just to roll which is 20% of one’s fuel bill! Tyre manufactures use silica and other patented substances to reduce rolling resistance, but they, in turn, increase the cost of production of them. The cheaper tyre brands will exclude such substances in the manufacturing process to keep costs down and thereby keeping rolling resistance higher as well. TYRE CARE Tyre pressure Tyres lose about 0.2bar over a three month period. This is due to the marriage of tyre to the rim and tyre construction. It is therefore very important to check one’s tyre pressures at least once a month. A tyre’s worst enemy is heat. Under-inflated tyres generate a massive amount of heat in the sidewall of the tyre. A tyre’s sidewall is the thinnest

and most vulnerable part of any passenger tyre. Blowouts can easily occur in under-inflated tyres. Over- inflated tyres negatively interfere with road holding. Correct inflation pressures bring all the tyre safety features to the fore. The correct pressures for one’s vehicle’s tyres may be found on a sticker in your car door, in the cubby hole hand book or the information may be found via Google.

We often change tyres that have no tread left and often some of these have the ply belts showing. Examples thereof are shown later in this article. Tyre age Tyres age. The average safe tyre age is five to seven years depending on the environment in which it was used. UV rays from the sun are also major contributing factor here.

Remember that if the load in one’s vehicle goes up, tyre inflation pressure must be increased too. This information may be found as per the paragraph above.

Look for perishing cracks on the sidewalls and between the treads. When first it’s noticed, have them replaced! Cracks can, and will, lead to tyre failures.

Wheel alignment Wheel alignment is the measurement and correction of one’s vehicle’s suspension components in order to allow the four wheels to run in the same direction (this is called the toe setting) as well as the angle at which the tyres meet the road. (Caster and camber settings).

Punctures We repair on average forty punctures a week. Punctures must been seen as a temporary measure and one should reduce the speed rating of the tyre by at least two ratings. i.e. if your tyres are rated “H” they should be derated to “S”.

With your toe setting only marginally out, 40% of your tyre life may easily be lost and of course the worse it is, the worse the wear to one’s tyres... ’Run flat’ tyres are particularly sensitive to correct toe settings.

The ratings are to be found on the tyre side wall. S = 180km/h T = 190km/h H = 210 km/h V = 240km/h

The caster and camber settings are safety related settings for better road holding and performance. Tread depth The minimum legal tread depth in South Africa is 1mm over 100% of the tread area; however in Japan (and other countries that have higher safety standards) it’s 3mm in summer and 4mm in winter. The following performance figures will show the reasons why: New tyre (8mmtread depth) =100% performance 4mm remaining tread depth = 88% performance 3mm remaining tread depth =75% performance 1.6mm remaining tread depth = 55% performance To put this in a more tangible comparison, a tyre with 1.6mm tread depth will stop a given vehicle, from 80kph to standstill, 18.6m further than the same vehicle with new tyres! The 1.6mm tyre vehicle will have residual speed of 44kph where the new tyre vehicle had stopped! Remember to increase following distance in wet weather, even if one’s tyres are new and are the best money can buy.

COMMITMENT – WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR? There is no question that trends around the world, in terms of how we operate our relationships, have radically changed. It is no longer unacceptable or frowned upon for couples to live together or have children out of wedlock. Personal choice to marry or not really depends on what you both want to do, and if marriage isn’t on the cards for both parties, then that’s perfectly fine! But what happens when one partner wants more of a commitment and the other is dragging their heels or avoiding the subject? How long do you wait for your partner to be ready? This leads to the more difficult question: When is enough ‘enough’? There is no question in your mind that you are ready to commit to your partner for life. But your partner continues to drag their feet…and drag their feet. As hard as it is to accept, sometimes relationships outlast their ‘best before date’ and stop moving forward. How do you know if your relationship has reached that point, and you have entered that zone of simply ‘plodding along’ together? Is there anything you can do or are you destined to be taken along for the ride? The most important consideration is that despite

the fact that your partner’s reluctance to commit can feel like a rejection of you, it’s not to be taken personally. You can do this by recognising that when one of you is holding back on taking that huge step, it often has more to do with their own issues and fears than with how they feel about you as their partner. They may have experienced a failed relationship in terms of their own parents divorcing when they were younger, and they may see marriage as destined to fail. Perhaps they have been betrayed in the past and now have trust issues. If they have been married before and gone through their own divorce, there might be all sorts of cause for reluctance to commit again, keeping them from remarrying. Or they might be worried about compatibility and lifestyle differences. I have worked with couples for a long time and I often see situations where one party is ready to get married and eager to take that next step, but the other hesitant. Often, couples have been in a relationship together for years, and may be living together, but one says that they need more time for it to feel right for them.

Counselling in this situation encourages couples to talk about why the one or other is not ready to move forward and make a firm commitment. See if you can jointly determine what it might take to get beyond these fears. Challenge yourselves to work towards making progress in deciding when to commit. Maybe it means talking through differences and making a concrete plan, or it could be as simple as finding a new job or asking for a salary increase. And then you can set a time limit, maybe six months or a year, and see if anything changes. As long as you and your partner are trying, then your relationship still stands a chance. But if your partner is ‘all talk’, and has made no attempt to move towards the goals you set together, then sadly it might be an indication that nothing will ever change. At that point, you can do what they have not been able to do and take the next step yourself, moving on in the knowledge that you did everything possible to try and salvage the relationship, to no avail.

many cases a fever actually strengthens the immune system and helps to prevent susceptibility to other illnesses later in life. It essential that infections are managed and supported correctly.

Fever is a response to infection that evolved millions of years ago and helps enhance the response to infection. A fever is defined by a temperature that exceeds 38 °C. Normal body temperature is around 37 °C. When bacteria or viruses invade the body and cause tissue injury, one of the immune system’s responses is to produce pyrogens. These chemicals are carried by the blood to the brain where the hypothalamus raises the body’s temperature above the normal range, thereby causing a fever. The above-normal temperatures stimulate the motion, activity, and multiplication of white blood cells and increase the production of antibodies. These cells fight the infection by destroying the bacteria and viruses. At the same time, elevated heat levels may directly kill or inhibit the growth of some bacteria and viruses that can tolerate only a narrow temperature range. It is known that a fever activates the immune system. In

Parents should be aware of warning signs (laboured breathing, unresponsiveness, stiff neck, headache and fever in a newborn) and be in contact with their child’s medical doctor in the case of any fever. This is especially important if your child has a fever combined with a rash or still has a fever after a day or two, even after taking baby or child paracetamol, vomits or has persistent diarrhoea, refuses food or liquids, cries inconsolably or just looks unwell to you, starts having convulsions or twitches, is in pain or if you feel worried or concerned at any stage. Watching how your child behaves will give you a pretty good idea of whether a minor illness is the cause, or if your child should be seen by a medical doctor. Osteopathic
