January is back to school - that overwhelming and stressful period for parents when chaos reigns. We've put together a calendar for our readers, many of whom are parents, surrounded by family focused ideas to help you get organized. It's just been the festive season, and whilst our wallets got slimmer, our waists may have put on weight! I know I can't resist all that delicious Christmas food and holiday eating out. The burning question is: “Is there any hope, or should we simply resign ourselves to entering the New Year with more of us than last year?” The good news is we've filled this issue with helpful ideas to help you shed that festive excess and start the New Year feeling healthier and happier. We trust you had a relaxing time off (for those fortunate enough to have taken leave) and wish all our readers a Happy New Year!

The Dress By Kate Kerrigan R328
I adored this beautifully written novel about the lives of three women. Lily is a vintage fashion blogger who, after the death of her beloved grandfather, goes looking for answers about his past. She stumbles upon an extraordinary story about a dress; possibly worn by her great uncles wife, Joy. Joy was a fashion legend renowned for her beauty and style in 1950's New York. The third character Honor, made the dress and fell in love with Joy's husband Frank. Lily's determination to remake this couture master piece and quest for answers brings the story together and exposes more than a few secrets from the past. 8/10
A Better Man By Leah McLaren R338
I dare you not to love this novel. It is fun, fresh, candid and equal parts hilarious and heart breaking. Nick, immensely dissatisfied with his life with his wife (Maya) and twin children, decides he wants out and consults with a family friend/divorce
lawyer to understand what a divorce would cost him. The sum he is told is frightening. The advice he is given is to pretend to be the perfect husband for long enough to ensure that Maya becomes happier and more self sufficient, making the divorce payout to her far cheaper. As he pretends to be a better husband and father he falls in love with her all over again. Everything is going wonderfully well for them until she finds out what he had been planning. A summer must-read! 9/10
We Never Asked for Wings By Vanessa Diffenbaugh R292
It's a little odd but nonetheless enjoyable for it. This is a moving story about a single mother, Letty, who is terrified of raising her two children alone and relies heavily on the support of her mother, Marie Elana. When her mother ups and leaves to return to Mexico it sends Letty into a flat panic. Leaving her children all alone, Letty goes searching for her mother to beg her to return. In the interim Letty's teenage son, Alex, struggles with his mom's decisions and can't forgive her for her lack of parenting. This novel is about family, parenting and the tough choices we make for our children but most of all, it's about love. Compelling, honest, sad – it's a worthy read. 8/10
