Gina Athans: Beauty isn't Everything

The Easter holidays are behind us and the frenetic pace of working life and back to school resumes. The cooler weather has set in and already summer and the holidays are starting to feel like a distant memory. We've turned the spotlight on Sea Point this month where we moved our offices to a year ago. We love the area and want to give our readers a chance to see just how much it has to offer. Once upon a time the suburb had developed a certain negative stigma. However, there has been a dramatic turnaround in that perception; which has been steadily building over the past few years; with many foreign and local investors now seeing it as a place of massive urban rejuvenation. In order not to fall into the early autumn, grey sky, glum-trap- try reminding yourselves of all the awesome things that come along with winter. Namely, we can now safely indulge in a host of fabulous beauty treatments that you can't do during summer, we can unpack our glamorous winter wardrobes (I always love the first few weeks of coats and boots and silky scarves), we can enjoy long nights cuddling up next to the fire and great red wines and we can hide our post chocolate crazed Easter bodies under a multitude of layers. Win-Win?

Gina Athans:

Beauty isn't Everything By Danni Thunell Ende How did you get into the industry? I was 18 when I was scouted by an agent from IMG Paris (in Cape Town) and that's when I started to take it seriously. Before that I always liked the idea but was still focused on finishing school. What were some of the highlights of your modelling career? My career was a journey, with many stops along the way. It is hard to single out one specific stop, since it is the journey that gave me the greatest gift. But if I have to choose one specific thing, I would have to say that it is the fact that you are your own boss! Secondly is the fact that I got to see the world! I absolutely love travelling. I must also add that it was really good monetary wise! What was life like in the fast lane married to an extremely wealthy man? Life was back then as life is today. It's always had its ups and downs. The only difference is that the ups and downs might be higher and lower when exposed to anything in extreme. Like the old

Joburg born Athans is of Greek origin. Spotted by the same representatives of Giselle Bundchen at the time, Gina was urged to go to Paris to pursue her modelling career. She became a top model, appeared in a movie alongside Daniel Craig, has been voted by FHM as one of the world's sexiest woman and was married to a Jordanian billionaire. We met up with her to find out what life was like in the fast lane and her tips for success. saying goes, I wish I knew then what I know now. My ability to deal with things is far greater now that I'm in my thirties. Any advice to young women in the beauty industry? I have learnt that beauty isn't everything. The secret to beauty is the acceptance of oneself. Self love. That actually contributes to the body on a metaphysical level in leaps and bounds. To people in the industry, I would urge them to promote beauty in an holistic way as opposed to something that is unrealistic and helps fuel the perceptions of society in a negative way, by dictating to women through the media to look a certain way. What prompted you to give up modelling? The first time I gave it up was due to my marriage. After my divorce I started again but the second time round; I felt that I needed to concentrate on re-inventing myself as a woman and not a model. So I opened up my first business which was a Public Relations company.

What are your current career plans? I am an entrepreneur by spirit. So I am always looking at opportunities and trying to see if I can turn them into a viable business. I have recently turned my lifelong passion and dream into a reality. I have started my own NPO, called The Love Army. My mission is to create social Change through creative initiatives. Each project has one goal in mind and that is TRANSFORMATION. The Love Army is a movement I want everyone to become a part of, as Love Soldiers! I want to take people from being a victim of their history to a master of their destiny! Victim to Victory! What is the motto you live by? Don't react, rather reflect. What do you love about living in Cape Town? Being close to my friends & the simple things in life, like going to my local spot, Jarryds, for coffee. Tell us something secret about yourself. Well, this is quite embarrassing! I still watch my favourite soapie “The Bold & the Beautiful. It is literally a brainless exertion for me but I love it.

Sea Poin

A Place of Mas Urban Rejuven Sea Point is one of the most affluent and densely populated areas along the elite Atlantic Seaboard. A mere stroll through Sea Point is enough to feel the buzz of energy it emanates. It is a truly diverse neighbourhood- in that you have families that have lived there for generations; as well as an influx of vibrant, trendy youth- all ecstatic to call Sea Point their home. Once upon a time the suburb had developed a certain negative stigma. However, there has been a dramatic turnaround in that perception; which has been steadily building over the past few years; with many foreign and local investors now seeing it as a place of massive urban rejuvenation. Berman Bros, for example, have significantly invested into Sea Point. “As a local I noticed the inconsistency between the decay happening on the Main Road and

the multi million Rand homes up on the mountain which gave rise to huge opportunity, says Paul Berman. His motivation to uplift the area was relentless and his desire was to create a structure which would attract developers to the area and lure back the big retailers who moved out of the area when the V&A Waterfront was built. Hence The Point Centre on Regent Road was built. The Bay Magazine recently moved our offices to the centre and it has been a pleasure to work from. Many business analysts believe Sea Point is undergoing a complete 360 and is becoming a High Street once again; which is alive with thriving businesses from restaurants, coffee shops, beauty salons, retails stores and so much more. If you haven't visited the area in a while then I urge you to come and take a stroll through Sea Point. You will be pleasantly surprised.

The Widow By Fiona Barton R292

One of the most gripping psychological thrillers I've read this year. It will keep you riveted from start to finish. Jean Taylor is typical of a brow beaten wife who only knows her place as alongside her husband and therefore wouldn't dream of challenging him. When Glenn suddenly gets accused of a horrendous crime, she stands by him. However, when he dies in an unexpected accident she realises that perhaps she doesn't have to be the silent wife anymore. As a widow everyone wants answers from her. How much does she know and can she help them find out what happened to the missing child? Fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train will love it. 9/10

Sweet Caress By William Boyd R328

This is a sweeping, historical novel of Amory Clay and her life. It takes the readers on a journey with her from Berlin in the 20's, to New York in the 30s and France in the Second World War. It is told through her camera lens. A passionate photographer and an avid rule breaker, Amory lives her life on her own terms and with an honesty and zest that is

inspiring. It's a very real story without any airs and graces; with complicated love affairs and a rich historical background. I found it quite slow moving in parts and if it weren't for Amory's vibrant personality which kept me enthralled- I may have taken longer to finish it. 7/10

The Storm Sister By Lucinda Riley R292

This is book number 2 in the series of the Seven Sisters based loosely on the mythology surrounding the famous star constellation. Ally D'Aplièse who is sailing on a remote island, with the new love of her life and is about to compete in one of the world's most dangerous yacht races, is distraught when she hears the news of her adoptive father's sudden death. She rushes back to meet her five sisters at their family home, where she discovers that her father has left each of them a clue to help them all find out where they came from. Another trauma befalls Ally shortly after this and with her life in turmoil she decides to follow the trail of clues that her father left her, which leads her all the way to Norway. There, she begins to discover her roots - and how her own life story is linked to that of a young unknown singer, Anna Landvik, who lived there more than 100 years before. As Ally begins to put together all the elusive pieces of the puzzle, she also begins to question who her father really was and why is the seventh sister missing? 8/10

Tintswalo Atlantic raises R300 000 for the NSRI The NSRI were hugely instrumental in assisting the Tintswalo Atlantic team during the Cape wildfires of March 2015, which saw the luxury lodge engulfed in flames. Now rebuilt and more beautiful than ever, Tintswalo Atlantic set out to raise funds. The auction was the highlight of the evening, with an array of exciting items to bid on, from accommodation at Tintswalo's various luxury hotels and lodges, and a signed (and as yet, unpublished) copy of Wilbur Smith's latest book to a joyride experience in a racy McLaren and a four-night stay in a luxury apartment in London. They raised enough to purchase additional equipment for the NSRI Hout Bay base, over and above a rescue boat, which will be aptly named The Tintswalo! Special thanks to Marina Nestel from The Little Black Book for helping to organise the event.
