Forget about New Year's resolutions- spring is the time of rebirth and renewal. Whether it's on a personal or business level- take a hard look at your relationships and let go of all that is negative. De clutter your homes and lives of everything that is not adding value. Easier said than done- I know- but think of how much better you will feel. I feel positively invigorated after I've filled a big black bag full of old toys and clothes to donate to those less fortunate. September is also a good time to start preparing for summer. It gives us long enough to look and feel our best. Let's Step into spring stylishly. There's still a good few months left in the year for us all to need a little reboot! The upcoming school holiday is the perfect opportunity to book a getaway. Take your family somewhere relaxing where you can indulge in some quality time with them as well as fit in (hopefully) some much needed “me time. It doesn't have to be an exorbitant affair either. We are so spoilt for choice in the Western Cape with all the fabulous places to go for the weekend- literally on our doorstep. Take advantage. It's amazing how a simple weekend away can rejuvenate you often more than a long overseas journey; without having to contend with 20 hour plane rides, jet lag and more. Enjoy spring in all its glory!

Cover Story
Dynamic Darja O'Donnell:
Model, Mom and Businesswoman By: Danni Thunell Ende This month we met up with German born top fashion model and owner of Dmanagement modelling agency, Darja O'Donnell. Tell us about your company, Dmanagement. We are a boutique agency that caters to local and international clients which I started in 2011. We have a wide range of top talent developed locally and several international models that come for the season. I started the business as I wanted the flexibility to have a career whilst being able to look after my own two kids on my terms. We now have about 250 models and characters' on our books. How did you get into modelling? I am originally from Berlin, Germany. On a cultural trip to London at the age of 16 I was scouted by Models1 agency and that little trip blossomed into a lifelong career. What has been your career highlight? There have been several. Only a year into my career as a full time model I booked the CLARINS beauty campaign in Paris. It was incredible to be chosen for such an iconic French brand. Then of course working with so many inspiring, creative people on editorials & covers for Elle, Vogue, Cosmo and Marie Claire and working with designers like John Galliano, Azzedine Alaia , Jean Franco Ferrer and many others.
What do you love most about what you do? I am a creative, free spirit by nature and I love working with people. I am fortunate that I fell into an industry where I could learn from the best and pass on those experiences to talented young people throughout the industry. What top three beauty products/treatments couldn't you live without? I can't live without Heliocare colour compact sunscreen SPF 50. It has a light texture and I put it on with a brush and a highlighter mixed in to give me a lovely glow and protect me from the harsh SA sun at the same time. Bioderma make up remover is amazing and I love using Argan oil on my face, body and hair. Do you have any advice for aspiring models? Success flows by balancing all the aspects of your life. I believe that healthy eating, physical exercise, staying positive and studying the art of fashion and photography to get inspired and express your individuality are keys to success. How do you stay grounded in this industry? There is an illusion of this industry being frivolous however from my experiences I have worked with highly focused and inspiring people. Even when you have done extremely
well you should always remind yourself of where you started and appreciate the journey. What's the secret to maintaining your awesome body after two children? I am a very active person by nature and have a dance background which gave me a good foundation. These days I mainly do yoga and you will see me at least 5 times a week at YogaLife in the Cape Quarter. I introduced the odd SWITCH class to shake up my routine and I'm really enjoying the combination. I believe in a balanced diet and don't deprive myself of anything. I love cheese and dark bread-after all I am German- but all in moderation. How do you unwind after a busy day? A walk on the promenade in Seapoint to reset my mind, followed by a hot bath and then bed with a good book and a cup of camomile tea.

In a nutshell sum up your business. An interactive food experience with like minded people, learning new skills while having fun, and eating fabulous food made with love! Who inspired you to start your business? It was a combination of Liam Tomlin, (who's cooking school I had frequent flyer miles at) and then my family and friends, who have always encouraged and believed in me and my cooking talent. What motivates you to succeed? Happy satisfied guests in my kitchen….. When all the chairs around the table are full, and chatter and laughter fill the room….. That just makes me want to give more and more. I still feel like every customer is a personal guest, and treat them as such, wanting them to have the best experience and to love what I do. That makes me happy, and motivates me all the time. What's your biggest competitive advantage? I would say our venue is pretty spectacular, and has a good mix of the state of the art modern kitchen studio, with the old world charm of the rest of the house. The PEPPERMINT PALACE, as she is fondly known because of the faded green colour, has been around for many many years, and she is a grand elegant old lady. Guests feel at home here, they feel the warmth, the love and the history here. You cannot buy that, it just is….. Sum up your business motto/philosophy We do this FOR THE LOVE OF COOKING, and therefore our passion shines through, and this sets us apart. This is not a business, it is a vocation! Your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? Just go for it, take that first step, even if you can't see the top of the staircase. What are some of your all time favourite South African brands? Oakhurst Olives And Olive Oil, Le Joubert Red Wine, Five Roses Tea And Africology Products (strange combination but they work for me!)
In a nutshell sum up your business. My Main business is to supply Laser Machines, equipment and Advance Skin care to the beauty industry. This gets imported from all over the world. I recently started exporting to Saudi Arabia, Seychelles and Australia. We developed a anti-cellulite body gel and home peel kit that has done very well. My second business is an aesthetic skin care clinic only focusing on aesthetics. Who or what inspired you to start your own business? I think from a young age I always knew I would be in sales as I loved making things and selling them. Both my parents had their own businesses so I learned entrepreneurship at a young age. What motivates you to succeed? I get motivated when I know my customers are satisfied and the feeling I get when I have over delivered. There is so much in store for me. What's your biggest competitive advantage? The fact that I have been in everyone's chair, I have been a beauty therapist, spa manager, business owner, supplier and a customer and by having this experience I know what my customers expect and want from me and I can deliver on this. Sum up your business motto/philosophy Always go above and beyond your status quo. Your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? When starting a business keep your overheads low, don’t overspend in the beginning and remember you have to spend money to make money, so do it wisely What are some of your all time favourite South African brands? Cellabon RX and Vitamin Water.

My children are now 5 and 7 years old and I felt like it was time to find something creative and fun that would allow me to be flexible with my time and give us the opportunity to travel and be creative. What motivates you to succeed? Turning an idea into something tangible and successful is very motivating. The fact that we deal with beautiful products from around the world is also creative, fun and inspiring. What's your biggest competitive advantage? The Good Girl
Mad Max : Fury Road Genre: Action Starring: Charlize Theron Running time: 125 IMDB Rating : 8.4
This is one of the many movies that was made in Africa and due to the landscape needed, Namibia was the perfect choice. An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
By: Fiona Neill R282 I really enjoyed this book. It's a controversial story of one family's deepest, darkest secrets. I particularly enjoyed the role that social media played in this story as it is so relevant in today's age. A must read for any teenager, woman and especially mother of a teenager. It tells the story of how one bad decision made in your teen years can affect your whole life. The lead character “Romy” is the Good Girl. She's never given her parents any trouble, a straight-A student who's lived very much under the radar; which is why as events unfold her parents are left reeling with shock. It is a delicate coming of age story, beautifully written- I was absolutely gripped. 9/10
The Versions of Us By: Laura Barnett R282 This book explores how certain decisions we make can lead us in vastly different directions. It is a multi layered story of the different paths our lives could take if only we were to make certain choices. There is a central romance between Eva and Jim who meet after Eva comes off her bicycle one fateful afternoon at Cambridge in 1958. It is a complete sliding doors novel and urges you to imagine all the “what if” moments of your own life. I found it a bit slow moving in places. You need to concentrate as the book swings rapidly through all the three different versions of events; which are all fairly similar bar a few critical details. However, your patience will be rewarded as there is some great writing and really poignant moments to be found. 7/10
By: Jane Green R282 It's a story of a young woman, Cat, who - on the cusp of her thirties - suddenly find that all her friends are settled down except her. She's struggling with her identity and has always relied heavily on alcohol as her crutch; until one day she realises she may have a serious problem. Unable to stop - you witness her life as it all unravels. She discovers some life changing secrets which send her all the way to Nantucket to meet a family she never knew existed. However, her problem with alcohol is such that she alienates those who she is trying to befriend. The second half of the novel is all about her coming full circle and trying to make amends for her mistakes. You can't help rooting for her throughout it all. Like all Jane Green novels this one doesn't disappoint and you're rewarded with the usual happy ending one can expect from this talented author. 8/10
