Resident Feature

Meet the

Chalfant Family: A busy family with strong ties in the community By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

A

Bay Area love story can only start in one place - a party in the Marina in San Francisco. Chris and Deanna Chalfant met exactly there in 2007, and thanks to mutual friends, they had a few more group excursions where they decided that the connection was one worth exploring further. Chris grew up in the south bay, Saratoga to be specific. Deanna is a born and raised Danvillian! For their first one on one date, Chris made his way across the bay from his San Francisco apartment, straight through the door of Danville’s own Norm’s Place. From that night on, the two were inseparable. A year later they decided to move in and officially start life together. After living in an apartment in the Presidio together, Chris and Deanna decided to trade the city for the suburbs. Deanna, having grown up in Danville, knew that it would be a great place for them to settle down. With their first home purchased, a trip to New York in December of 2011 resulted in a surprise proposal! Less than a year later the two wed on the beautiful Lake Tahoe beach of the Hyatt Resort in Incline Village, Nevada. Married life suited them well, and they moved to their next home in San Ramon and welcomed their first daughter, Madison, in 2012. In 2015 they were blessed with another daughter, Emma. That was when they decided to make their way back to Danville. This time, both Chris and Deanna knew that

The whole family takes in a Giants game

they wanted to focus on the West side, and in 2017 they found their dream home in a very familiar neighborhood.

for welcoming us so warmly into the neighborhood. We adore you all and love all the fun times.”

Chris and Deanna found their forever home on Love Lane. It was a bit of a fixer upper, but with its location close to the Iron Horse Trail, downtown, and surrounded by plenty of character, it checked all the boxes. When Deanna was growing up, she had a great grandmother who lived on Love Lane. What a wonderful legacy! “Hands down we have some of the BEST neighbors. There is never a shortage of fun for both the adults and kids.” Recently, the whole neighborhood organized a progressive dinner party that was auctioned off at Montair’s School Auction. Wanting to express their gratitude, the Chalfants said, “The last year plus has truly been amazing. We want to thank our Love Lane neighbors

Finding such a thriving neighborhood means that the Chalfant’s two daughters can grow and play surrounded by friends and family. Madison is a kindergartner at Montair. She is very active and loves playing soccer with Mustangs. Deanna is equally passionate about the sport and serves as the Age Group Coordinator for Mustang Soccer. Little sister Emma attends Community Presbyterian Preschool - the same preschool that Deanna went to! She does gymnastics and swims with her big sister (Go Sea Lions!). Both girls love visiting their grandmother in Oakdale, where their beautiful Shetland pony, Suzie, lives. They take private riding lessons when they visit sweet Suzie. Along with

6

Suzie, the family has a 1.5 year old golden retriever named Brady. Chris is a die-hard Giants fan. He doesn’t miss a game, and don’t worry, if you can’t remember when opening day is - just keep an eye on his front yard. As soon as that special day hits, the flag is out flying proud! Chris has been fortunate to be a Giants season ticket holder for 8 years now. He has passed his love of the sport onto his two daughters. “There is truly nothing better than taking [the] girls to the “YARD” to watch a day game.” While the girls cherish every moment watching baseball with their dad, Deanna would likely rather be doing something else. The family still enjoys going to Tahoe to ski, working in their yard, and shooting hoops on their sports court. Interestingly enough, both Chris and Deanna joined their current companies straight out of college. Chris is the Northwest Regional Sales Manager for Stanley Black and Decker (DeWalt). He graduated from Arizona State University

in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in business. Deanna attended the University of California Santa Barbara and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She is now a Vice President of Development for Essex Property Trust. They are equally proud of each other for turning their first jobs out of college into long-standing, successful careers. Between jobs, sports, and two energetic young ladies, the Chalfants have very full plates. Each night at dinner, the family prays and talks about all the wonderful things that they have going on in life. They talk about “how grateful they are for their health and all of life’s abundance.” A key focus in their family’s values is hard work and being grateful. “Life is short, so treat every day as a gift. Be grateful for the gifts that God gives us.” Whether it’s traveling to Croatia for a mom and dad getaway, a fun family trip to Disney World, or around their own wonderful neighborhood, the Chalfants live each day in Love.

If you want to get out from under high interest rate charges from credit cards, student loans, or other forms of debt, then a cash-out refinance might be the solution for you.

A great way to save money on your home loan is to refinance for a lower interest rate. Just a small drop in interest rate can lower your mortgage payment significantly.

Refinancing your home to take advantage of its equity can be a great way to get the funds you need for home improvements, retirement, vacations and more.

From Danville to Vietnam: How One Student is Stepping Up to Help By Sean Grame, Resident since 2001, student at The Athenian School

O

ne cannot truly understand how privileged they are until they see people without it. From an early age my grandfather used to show me photos of his visits to Kon Tum, a city that is home to seven unique orphanages. He did business overseas in Vietnam but integrated time into every trip to visit the children. His passion and commitment rubbed off on me, inspiring me help the Vietnamese children, to give them opportunities. Shortly after, grandfather took me to the orphanages and that trip solidified my passion to help these children. Fast forward five years and I have visited Vietnam three times, joined the board of a non-profit raising money for these children, and involved my community in any way I could.

Friends of Vinh Son, the non-profit that I work for, has allowed me to do this. With the help of my mentor, Vietnam war veteran Patrick Leary, I have been able to raise awareness for the cause through social media by posting YouTube videos, updating the Facebook page daily, and promoting our website.

During my trips to Vietnam my perspective on privilege completely shifted. Prior to visiting Vietnam, I had not traveled to third world countries, so I did not understand the polar contrast between my life and theirs. Arriving at the orphanages and seeing hundreds of children living in poverty, yet with smiles from ear to ear, taught me that material items do not determine happiness, rather only intrinsic values. These trips also instilled in me that I can make a positive difference, whether it be fundraising at school, collecting items to take there, or simply socializing with the children.

Additionally, I have been able to involve my friends in Friends of Vinh Son. Some of my close friends have aided me in organizing bake sales at school, coordinating events, and helping me edit videos. In the near future, I plan on arranging a trip for students at my school to visit the Vinh Son orphanages and experience the beauty that every single child there radiates. The kids in Vietnam have given me a purpose, regardless of how easy or tough my Danville life is, I know that they appreciate everything they have; they are my inspiration.

secluded gem north of San Francisco, the Marin Headlands, offers a picturesque day trip easily filled with admiring the grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day, visiting fascinating historical sights, and witnessing a breathtaking sunset over the Pacific. I, along with my family, enjoyed the Rodeo Beach Coastal Trail on our spontaneous adventure. It is an 11-mile hike that features a number of abandoned military batteries The day’s last light, saying goodnight to the beach. Taking in the vast view of the coast and stunning views. Lush green hills combed by the wind combined with heavy Whether it is the Point Bonita Lighthouse, the Marine Mammal waves crashing against the black pebbles of Rodeo Beach made Center, or even the Nike Missile Site SF-88, there is something for a magnificent spectacle. The sights and sounds are simply for everyone within close proximity. Do not miss this chance rejuvenating. Choose a Job You Love, and You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

E

arly on when I first started working in the pool business, I was very fortunate to have a few mentors who shared their extensive pool knowledge with me. As I worked for various pool companies, I made mental note of the business practices I liked and wanted to replicate, and things I would never do when I had my own company.

Since starting my business several decades ago, we have striven to be the pros in the field of pool service and repairs. We are known for taking jobs and fixing broken pools that other companies turn down and won’t touch. Other pool companies hire us to do their repairs. We are proud of all we have accomplished; yet humble and filled with gratitude to our customers for letting us serve you.

When I started my company, my top two priorities were to provide the best service for my customers and hiring the best people who had a passion for making repairs and providing a great service.

Servicing and repairing your pools, has allowed me to provide for my family, pay for my son’s college education, and now my business is giving a new generation the ability to provide for their families. Most of my staff has young children, and I hope that they will be able to send their children to college as I have.

My motto has always been treat others as you would want to be treated, and that goes towards my customers and staff. We are not perfect, but we try our hardest to provide the best experience possible and we work very hard to make sure we are extremely knowledgeable and excel at what we do. In an industry where there are multiple safety hazards on every job, the most important rule is safety first for our customers and our staff. I hold my staff to very high standards, as we know our customers expect the best from us.

My life has surpassed my dreams, and I am truly grateful. I am no Bill Gates or Elon Musk, but my life has made a difference in my community. It may be a small piece of the American dream, but it is a piece of it. Here at Atlantis we love what we do and we hope it shows. We thank our customers and hope that we will serve you for many years to come.

FIRST PETS FOR KIDS By Chelsea Scott

Y

ou knew the day would come: your child wants a cat. A dog. A pony. Worst-case scenarios and dollar signs flash before your eyes as you try to explain to your child that they are too young or too irresponsible to have a pet. Let’s pump the brakes and brainstorm here. There are plenty of low-maintenance pets that are suitable for families with kids and cost much less than a dog or cat. Gecko Yes, like the car insurance commercial. These small lizards are docile, easy to care for and generally live a long time. They make a kid-friendly pet due to their easy-going nature and willingness to be held.

Hamster Like the canary, a hamster can be happy in their comfortable cage with just food and water. Don’t forget the wheel! These cute rodents are goodtempered and don’t require more than a few minutes of handling per day. Betta Fish Betta fish are colorful and easy to care for since they only require a small bowl with no filter. Kids will enjoy picking out decorations for the bowl and watching the betta swim around. If taken care of, betta fish can live two or three years. Stick with a single betta: two or more will fight. Rabbit Rabbits are social and gentle and can be a great first pet with appropriate adult supervision. They can live to be about 10 years old and trained to use a litter box.

Canary Small and fun to watch, all canaries really need is a cage, food and water and a few toys. Your child could be responsible for cleaning the cage, feeding or watering.

Ultimately, you will decide whether to bring a pet into your home, when, and how much supervision your pet (and child) need. Even a small pet is a big responsibility. No matter what you choose, it will be the right decision for your family. Sources consulted: www.kids.nationalgeographic.com, www.parents.com

#writing is a lost art By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School

I

s our hashtag and texting culture of brevity contributing to the decline in our students’ ability to write well? While efficient methods of expression, they are essentially utilitarian and somewhat superficial. A well-written paragraph, essay, or presentation requires thought, deliberation, and revision. It’s a skill that is developed over time with the assistance of teachers adept at providing guidance and feedback. Texting is easier and takes less time and energy, but that’s not the skill employers seek. Being a competent writer is the expertise that is valued. Clear, coherent writing distinguishes one person from others. It can even be the reason one student is selected to take the last seat of a popular college class. A college freshman from the East Bay attending the University of Virginia wanted to enroll in an upper division English course, where the policy was to give priority to upper classmen. At the end of the first English class meeting, it was announced that one

more student would be allowed to enroll. Several freshmen and sophomores stood in line to plead their case to the professor, detailing why they should be the one person added to the class over the others vying for the spot. To make the determination, the professor had each student write a response to the prompt: What is home? Submitting a well-written, five-paragraph essay resulted in the East Bay freshmen being the student to land the one spot. When the professor asked how she had learned to write so well, she said she had learned and honed her writing skills during her tenure at The Dorris-Eaton School.

Spring Staycation By Chelsea Scott

W

e’d all love to pack up the kids and head somewhere for spring break or a spring vacation. However, that’s not always possible. If going somewhere tropical, exotic or new isn’t in the cards this spring, here are a few family-friendly ideas you can do without leaving town. Plan a State Park Visit Whether you live in a warm climate, somewhere that could get an April blizzard or anywhere in between, visiting a state park near you is always a great staycation idea. Admittance

fees are usually low (or free), and there is plenty to do year round. Depending on the area, you and your family could partake in beaches, fishing, nature/ education centers, horseback riding, birding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or hiking. You could easily spend a few days exploring and still not do/see everything. Cook Ethnic Cuisine When my sister and I were kids, we used to love going to the library. One of our favorite sections was the one with all the cookbooks. We seemed to

be drawn to those that offered recipes and colorful pictures of ethnic cuisine. Select a cuisine you have never tried before, hit the grocery store and cook dinner as a family. There you have it: a homemade, brand-new experience right in your own home. Be a Tourist in Your Hometown Does your hometown have a walking tour, a map with landmarks or maybe a festival that draws visitors from near and far? Try being a tourist in your hometown. Check out your city or town’s visitor’s bureau (either in person or online) and plan a day of activities. Hit up a festival, go on a tour or visit local attractions you’ve driven by but never stopped to appreciate. Who knows? You might learn something new about where you live! Lounge Poolside Book a night or two at a nearby hotel with a pool—the perfect staycation! Leave the computers at home and spend a few days enjoying each other’s company. If you’re lucky enough to have an indoor waterpark nearby, even better! The kids can splash and play on the water slides while parents relax in a hot tub. Then, everyone can kick back in a cabana and chill.

The Music Man By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

K

en Abrams has a song in his heart and he wants the world to hear it. What do you tell a man who has been crafting the art of choir for the last 35 years?.... Keep going! Regarded as one of the hardest working and beloved teachers in Danville, Ken Abrams has been teaching choir at San Ramon Valley High School since 1984. Abrams has also been the artistic director of the Danville Girls Chorus for the last 26 years. “When I started, there were only two choir classes at SRVHS. Now we have five during the day and one extracurricular group.” That’s over 150 students a day, plus another 150 for the Danville Girls Chorus. What draws these students to join his choir groups in record numbers in the first place? Perhaps it is the fast-paced and highly energetic exuberance that Abrams puts out and expects back from his students. Lazy or half-hearted efforts are never an option in his class. If you ever find yourself attending one of his many concerts, such as the Danville Tree Lighting, you can expect to see what Abrams describes as “Well behaved, very prepared singers, who act as professional as possible and deliver quality music and performances.” When it comes to his musical selections, nothing is off the table. Audiences have been delighted with songs ranging from traditional Latin to Broadway, often performing songs you would never think to hear from a choir, such as music by Sting or even Kansas.

Abrams is certainly not limited to the Danville area. Taking his choirs on tour is a big part of their musical education. They have traveled around the globe several times, visiting nearly all of Europe, Australia, Costa Rica, Russia and many other countries, along with 58 domestic tours. They have even had the honor of singing at the Vatican and the Sydney Opera House. Abrams has been on the receiving end of some very notable achievements thanks to his tenacious work Danville Girls Chorus director, Ken Abrams, prepares for rehearsal ethic. He was named Teacher of the Year in 1996 by SRVUSD, The Danville Volunteer of the Year in 2006, and his choir has taken first place in the Golden State Choral Competition 15 times in the last 18 years. The town of Danville looks forward to many more years of music with Ken Abrams. For more information visit Danvillegirlschorus.org

Chromatica Performs World Premiere Piece

Written by Danville Native By Chris Kenber, Resident Since 2011

C

hromatica, the popular Danville chorus, will perform the world premiere of Stacy Garrop’s “O Time” at the end of April. Commissioned by Chromatica, “O Time” is a glorious reflection on time, setting poetry by William Butler Yeats, John Milton and Henry Van Dyke to music. Stacy Garrop graduated from Monte Vista High School in Danville and now lives in Chicago. A prolific and prizewinning composer of choral and instrumental music, she has been commissioned by Chanticleer, the Kronos Quartet, the St. Louis Symphony, the San Francisco Choral Society and many others. She received the 2019 American Academy of Arts and Letters award and the 2018 Barlow prize as well as a 2016 Meier Foundation Achievement Award. Her music is a combination of dramatic and lyrical story telling. She takes her audience on journeys that are at once accessible and compelling. As an example, Stacy composed a particularly lovely piece based upon the husband of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s

An inside look at a Chromatica rehearsal

last letter to his wife, titled “My Dearest Ruth”. It was broadcast on National Public Radio. She got into composing as a result of her interaction with her music theory teacher at Monte Vista High School. Stacy Garrop, composer of “O Time” “In my junior year of high school, my music theory teacher was a jazz trumpet player, and he said one night to go home and write a piece of music. It was like this door opened that had always been shut,” says Stacy. “So after that I just started writing more and more pieces.” She subsequently earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Music Composition. In 2017, Chromatica performed her Sorel Medallion-winning composition “Love’s Philosophy” based on poetry by Shelley, Coleridge, Keats and Byron. It liked the piece so much it decided to commission Stacy to write a work it could perform as a world premiere, an unusual and exciting move for a community chorus. Chromatica was founded in 2011 and has been directed by David Huff ever since. It has performed two three-concert series a year since then, focused on a challenging mix of classical and contemporary works and attracting an enthusiastic audience. Currently comprising 30 singers, male and female, Chromatica has performed with the Diablo Symphony in addition to its regular concerts. It was recently invited to perform a suite of Russian compositions as a part of a concert in Lafayette.

The world premiere of Stacy Garrop’s “O Time” will be performed at concerts on April 27 at Peace Lutheran in Danville, on April 28 at St. Perpetua’s in Lafayette and on May 4 at Grace Presbyterian in Walnut Creek. The concerts will include other pieces based on the theme of time. Composers include Brahms, Barber and Copeland. Details and tickets are available at www. chromaticachorale.org. Easter Basket Candy Alternatives By Chelsea Scott

C

hocolate bunnies, shiny jelly beans, sugared gumdrops, chick-shaped marshmallows, and candy-coated eggs in a rainbow of pastel shades. What do all of these things have in common? They’re usually found in kids’ Easter baskets, of course! We all remember these traditional treats. While any child would be happy to receive a basket of faux grass filled with pounds of sugary treats, parents might not be so sweet on the idea. Not to mention there are some youngsters who can’t enjoy candy due to a dairy, nut, soy or other allergy. Maybe this year, the Easter Bunny could fill the basket with something other than candy (hint, hint). Even swapping out half the candy for other things would be

beneficial. Here are our best ideas for pintsized, non-candy Easter basket goodies. “Hoppy” Easter! • Sidewalk chalk •O ld-fashioned games (i.e. jacks, yo-yo, pick-up sticks) • Legos • Crayons • Fruity lip gloss • Flower seeds • Gift card(s) • Sugar-free gum • Hair bows • Sunglasses • Mini stuffed animal • Keychain • Bookmark • Water gun

Buying Real Estate? 5 Reasons to Commit to One Agent By Barbara Wilson, SRES, Realtor, Coldwell Banker

I

t seems that many people think they will get better service and perhaps a better price if they use many different agents, especially since “we can find everything we want to look at on the internet.” Here are 5 thoughts as to why that may not be the best reasoning.

1. Not all properties for sale are on the internet. Last week I showed my committed buyers 5 houses that are not on the market. Some are For Sale by Owners, some are in preparation to sell but because of my relationships with the listing agents, they said I could show my clients, “saving the seller time and stress”. These houses will be sold before you know they are for sale.

2. Commitment results in superior service. If I have several clients that have signed a Buyer’s Representation Agreement, (Platinum Clients), and a few that are working with multiple agents, I will spend the majority of my time seeking properties for my Platinum clients. I hear from agents and call agents to see what is coming soon, I find For Sale By Owners, I

identify houses in my client’s desired neighborhood and contact the owners, then share information with my clients. My time is valuable, so my Platinum clients get first choice. What doesn’t work for them, I pass on to my other clients, but it will be the left-overs.

3. It costs you nothing to commit to one agent. I don’t get paid until you get what you want, at the price you want. And the seller pays me. I negotiate for you, represent you, am at the appraisal, the inspections, and the signing, to make sure all legal aspects of the transaction are fulfilled and to make sure you aren’t spending more than you need to, to get what you want. And I want you to be a satisfied happy client for life.

4. You save time by working with one agent. When I have a Platinum buyer, I preview all the properties that I think will work for them. When I see it, I tell them about it, pros and cons, how it meets their needs and how it misses. Then they can decide if they want to see it, or trust me. So, no more searching the internet, scrolling through pictures, waiting for open houses, going through the open house with a horde, and then realizing it won’t work.

5. You will save money by using your own “buyer’s agent”. Many people think that “by using the listing agent to

represent me, they’ll give me a rebate.” But according to surveys, most people who use the agent representing the owner end up feeling like the agent only cared about their own commission, not their money. They feel like they could have gotten the house for less and that they ended up paying more. And felt that not all their options were presented. Should you really make the decision on where you and your family will live based on a realtor giving you some rebate? By thinking that you should work with a variety of agents you will almost certainly miss out on the right house, spend more money, waste your time, end up feeling resentful, and will likely be living in the wrong house for which you paid the wrong amount of money. Commit to the right agent who is willing to work with you so you will be a successful buyer, and be in the right place, in the right house, being so happy you will refer your agent to all your friends, because you know, committing to one agent was the right thing to do.

Push Present Gift Ideas from the New Grandparents! By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989

My wife, Judy, and I welcomed our first grandchild, Caroline, into the world last March and of course, new parents and babies have certainly been on the brain. When our oldest son, George, approached us for pushpresent ideas to gift to his wife, Kate, we of course had lots of ideas!

W

hat is a push present you ask? Simply put, it is a gift given as a token of celebration over the birth of a baby. The gift is just for the new mom. It is something that makes her feel special and appreciated after just going through one of the most challenging and most rewarding tasks in life. A push gift puts the focus back on the new mom. She deserves something special that makes her feel cherished. Jewelry offers a tangible reminder of the first few moments with her new child — and of your thoughtfulness — that she can wear every day. The new parent or the new grandparents can choose to present a push gift after the birth of the new addition to the family. No matter who gives the push gift, the goal is to make the new mom feel loved and appreciated. Birthstone and Personalized Jewelry Push present birthstone jewelry offers a personalized touch to the push gift concept. It commemorates the birth month of the newest member of the family. Each time she looks at the birthstone jewelry, she remembers the time when she became a mom. Birthstone options come in all categories of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Birthstone jewelry also starts a tradition for future babies. Add to her collection of birthstone jewelry to represent all of her children. If you’re buying a push gift for the last baby in the family, choose one jewelry piece that includes the birthstones for every member of the family — a necklace with small birthstone pendants for each family member or a bracelet with each person’s birthstone set in it, for example.

them into her ears, she’ll fondly remember your love and the birth of her child. An Additional Band to Complement Her Wedding Ring The wedding ring she wears every day represents your love and takes her back to your wedding day. It is a very important symbol to show your strength and commitment to one another. The birth of a child is just as monumental as getting married. With a new baby in the picture, that love you share continues to grow. Why not add another ring to her finger to represent that new family dynamic? Choose a band that fits beside her wedding ring, paying close attention to the style of the original band to ensure they look good together. We at Padis can provide suggestions for bands that will work well. Each time she gazes at her hand, she’ll not only remember her love for you but also the growing love your family has, thanks to the birth of your new baby. A New Timepiece Cell phones may be the go-to way to tell time, but an elegant designer watch is still a relevant and useful accessory in a new mom’s life. Not only will a new watch keep her on time for those pediatrician appointments and play dates, it also decorates her wrist with a sophisticated style. Choose a watch that fits her style and the way she might use it. Luminescent hands and easy-to-read numbers make the watch visible even in a dark nursery or under sleep-deprived conditions.

Like a birthstone, an initial on a piece of jewelry adds a personalized touch that represents the new family member. If you already know the baby’s name, you can easily purchase a piece of jewelry with the first initial before the birth. If you want to symbolize the changing composition of your family, incorporate the initials of mom and dad as well.

Whatever your role in the expectant mother’s life, make her baby’s birth special with a push gift. A thoughtful jewelry gift gives her a keepsake she’ll always cherish that reminds her of you and of the day that changed her life forever. Now that you know what a push present is, you’re ready to pick out the perfect gift! Head on over to any Padis Jewelry location and our consultants will be happy to help you pick out the perfect push present.

Sparkling Earrings Earrings work well as a push present because they are something the new mom can wear every day. Diamond solitaire earrings offer a classic, versatile option, but push present earrings can be any style or shape. The earrings don’t need a special connection to the birth itself. Simply receiving the earrings on the day her child is born is enough to make them special. Each time she slips
