Zanzibar is the semiautonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.
Portuguese invasion and control of the Swahili Coast in the late 16th century ended the golden age of the archipelago, although the Omani Arabs returned to power less than a century later. Today, many of the winding streets
and high townhouses of old Stone Town remain unchanged and visitors can walk between the sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders, the Portuguese fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city. Day-long spice tours to working plantations offer visitors the chance to observe the cultivation of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that have made the island famous.
The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast, and although the beaches of Mangapwani, where slave caves are visible at low tide and nearby Bububu are less than half an hour’s drive away, a night or two spent on the east or north cost
is well worth the extra hour it takes to drive there. That said, the Chole Island Marine Park just off Stone Town – and nearby Prison, Grave, and Snake Islands – make a refreshing day-trip and a good break from exploring the winding passageways of the old city.
On the south coast of Zanzibar lies the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island. Roads to the southeast coast take visitors through the Jozani Forest, home
to Zanzibar’s rare Red Colobus monkeys and a number of other primate and small antelope species.
THE ISLANDS OF ZANZIBAR
Zanzibar has many offshore islands, which provide a stunning location for a day trip or a longer stay. Boats to any of the islands off Zanzibar or Pemba can be hired easily from local fishermen. In Stone Town, ask at the ‘big tree’ opposite Mercury’s restaurant on the seafront, or arrange a day trip with one of the tour companies listed in this guide.
CHAPWANI ISLAND
A slightly more upmarket choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave island, is the site of a luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar and restaurant are permitted. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims of the World War One attack on the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg are also buried here. It’s interesting to wander around the graveyard
KNOWN AS THE SPICE ISLAND, THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR ON AFRICA’S EAST COAST IS BURSTING WITH CULTURE AND HISTORY, SEEMINGLY AT ODDS WITH ITS IDYLLIC GEOGRAPHY OF WHITE-SAND BEACHES WITH PALMS SWAYING LAZILY IN THE SEA BREEZE. and decipher the ages and causes of death of the servicemen –many died from tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers. Chapwani also has a beautiful white sandy beach and a small population of duikers (a type of miniature antelope), as well as some interesting birdlife. Government of Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day.
BAWE ISLAND
Bawe Island has some of excellent snorkeling spots. Around a 30-minute boat ride and slightly more expensive than the boat to Prison Island, it is much less visited.
In 1870, the island was used to anchor the first telegraph cables to Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. A further line was run across to Stone Town, into the old Extelcoms building, now the Zanzibar Serena Inn. If complete isolation and privacy is what you are after, then Bawe Tropical Island is the perfect place to stay. There are 15 private cottages scattered along the beach front, all with breathtaking panormaic views of the ocean, and all tastefully decorated in soft colours to enhance the relaxed pace of life. The beach is excellent at low tide, with unusual stone formations, and there is some
good snorkelling to be had on the island’s reef.
PRISON ISLAND
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is one of the most popular destinations for day trips from Stone Town. Just a short boat ride away, the island offers excellent snorkeling, a nature trail, small beach and the unusual attraction of a sanctuary for giant tortoises. Despite its name, the closest the island has come to actually being used as a prison was by its first owner, a wealthy Arab who sent unruly slaves there for discipline. In 2006, many of the islands old buildings were restored, and Changuu Private Island Paradise was opened, offering 15 deluxe cottages all on the seafront, affording maximum seclusion and privacy. There are also 12 standard rooms in the old quarantine area, with fantastic views back across to Stone Town. If swimming and snorkelling in the crystal blue waters gets too much, have a paddle in the freshwater swimming pool, or hit the ball around on the floodlit tennis court. Mathews’ restaurant offers excellent seafood lunches, and 4 course dinners, all overlooking the restored prison ruins.
CHUMBE ISLAND
Six kilometres south of Stone Town, surrounded by pristine coral reef, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism projects. In 1994 the reef surrounding Chumbe Island was named Tanzania’s first Marine National Park. The island itself, covered with lush mangrove forest, is a designated forest reserve. Visitors can come for the day to snorkel over the incredible coral reef, home to over 370 species of fish, turtles and dolphins. To experience Chumbe Island properly, stay the night in one of the seven ‘ecobandas’ that nestle in the forest. Each is a two-storey, private cottage constructed out of local materials and decorated with shells, driftwood and colourful local fabrics. Water and energy on Chumbe are self-sustaining and provided by nature - the roofs of the bandas and the education centre have been designed to catch and filter rainwater, which is then heated by solar power.
The magic of Zanzibar Island is that it is a multi-faceted destination, offering a unique blend of idyllic beaches, intriguing history, cultural diversity, tasty cuisine, exotic spices, and rich flora and fauna.

THE DAR ES SALAAM GOAT RACES 2022
Dar’s Premier Charity Event
The goat race is a sum of many parts – the kids’ area, the raffle, the betting, and the food and beverage outlets all come together to add to the fun of the day. However, the real stars of the show are, of course, the goats themselves. Although, they may take a little gentle persuasion to get in the moo, they always produce an exciting and close finish. In between races they are much loved and petted by the children who visit them in the pen.”
The Goat Races in Dares-Salaam, has been a staple in the annual event-calendar for the past 19 years and one of the premier charity events in the city. In 2018 the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oysterbay (“Rotary Club of Oysterbay”) decided to carry on with the races from its previous organizers and the first event under the new brand “The Goat Races presented by the Rotary Club of Oysterbay”, was a great success. This year’s event took place on the 5th November at the Green in Oysterbay and banked on the previous assets of the races: a fun family-event with proceeds going to charitable projects.
This was the third year that the Rotary Club of Oysterbay held the event under the name of The Goat Races presented by the Rotary Club of Oysterbay. Revenues generated from this year’s event will be used for various
service projects of Rotary Club of Oysterbay based primarily on Education.
This can be through new initiatives as well as the ones that are currently underway such as scholarships, provision of facilities and education on hygiene and sanitation, peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development. Rotary International is one of the world‘s most reputable charity organizations globally. Rotary International Foundation is one of the few international charitable organizations that has received a four-star rating from “Charity Navigator”, the largest and most trusted independent evaluator of non-profit organisations in the US.
The President of Rotary Club of Dar es salaam Oysterbay, Krutin Shah explained that this year’s motto was ‘Celebrating Cultures around the World’ and it attracted new fans and previous Goat Race enthusiasts likewise. ‘As in previous years, the Goat Races were able to attract large sponsors and this year was no different’, added Shah. “We are thankful for the trust in our organizational capacity our sponsors have given us.
The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oysterbay focuses on community-based projects that are largely organized and carried out by its member volunteers and that are designed around issues of disease prevention & treatment, maternal & child health, water & sanitation, literacy & education. We believe that only an educated person will thrive in a competitive, globalized world.
FASHION DESIGNER OF
“MUGONZIBWA”
A self-taught person in fashion
When the colors mix on a fabric to form bold, vibrant designs, you get a stunning African print. Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces.
They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the boundaries with a simple “Kitenge” leaving masterpieces in their wake.
Every month Dar Life dedicates this section
to young emerging and well-known designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream. This month we met Mugonzibwa whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are amazing, you must watch out!
Mugonzibwa has always had a passion for creation since childhood with which the creativity and imaginations has been a tool to improve any situation where she was. As a young girl she would walk to different tailors collect the left overs and sew little beautiful dresses for the dolls she created out of soil or fabric and sell them. beautifying parents ‘ living room was also a task she loved to do, turning old sheets into couch cushion covers.
After obtaining her master’s degree in HRM, a burning desire intensified and in 2016 she totally got involved in the fashion industry. Being a self-taught person in fashion she started receiving bulk and individual orders, thanks to loyal customers who trusted her eye of creativity and design and being a huge support to her since then. The trust they showed sharpened her to be able to execute her plans and grow as a designer.
To her, creating clothes brings and inspires such joy and increases her sense of spiritual connection as art is a form of prayer and our private devotions have an effect on others. She intends to use Nyuzi as a platform to contribute to the fashion and design industry in a monumental way, overseeing seasonal conceptualization and creation of men, women and children’s clothes and accessories.
As a young girl she would walk to different tailors, collect the left overs and sew little beautiful dresses for the dolls she created out of soil or fabric and sell them.

BALANCING YOUR BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LIFE
The Five Strategies That H lps You Make a Balance
By rodgers george
DREAM TO SEE SUCCESS IN BOTH THEIR BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LIFE. SADLY, YOUR BUSINESS LIFE CAN AFFECT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AND THE VICE-VERSA IS TRUE, IF THE TWO ARE NOT WELL
Many individuals carry their personal emotions to work every now and then, leading to a reduction of performance at work and/or business, which if not controlled, it may cause a downfall of the business.
What can you do? Dar life is help you balance your business and work.
1: LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES
Mistakes are inevitable. Unfortunately, many people have reported that focusing on one of the two has made them loose balance on either on one or both of them. Under that note, it is important that one learns from the mistakes made so as to thrive in the future.
2: LOOK FOR PARTNERS. DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL ALONE
At times things may get out of hand and if proper monitoring is not adhered, one may loose
business or loose in the social life. One quality of a good entrepreneur that will also help your relationships, is to stay focused on your zone of genius, the things that nobody else can do, and then put your energy into hiring or outsourcingtherest.
3:
SAY NO (AND KEEP
DO EVERYTHING Sometimes opportunities comeinbulk.Andatthislevel, many are tempted to say yes to all the opportunities and at the end of the day, they end up disappointing many peoplethatwillneverconsider them again. It can be easy to say YES to every opportunity, every client, and every task, be it big or small. But in order tohaveanychanceofkeeping yourheadabovewater, saying noisavitalskill.
4:
USE YOUR DEVICE
The development of technology has brought smartphones which have
calendar, reminders, alarms and many other business related tools that are important. Using a cloudbased service such as Google Drive, Dropbox or Box, allows you to access and work on your documents anytime, anywhere, from a device that

SELECT YOUR MASTER
You have to set your priorities right. See where you do
it. Set time for other things for they are important too.
to suffer when the going gets tough. But don’t forget that they’re actually some of the most important things to maintain.
so your business may not perfectly adhere to the formula. Use these steps as a loose guideline for the course of balancing your business and personal life , and thrust yourself into the process as much as you can.

Artisan Market In Dar Es Salaam
On 19th of November 22, Little Treater hosted the biannual Artisan Market for the 24th time. The Centre has supported this popular market for 15 years and continues to attract large numbers of customers and vendors.
The opportunity for artisans to exhibit their products on a scale of this size has undoubtedly led to the growth of Tanzanian art businesses, which are now able to test their mettle on an international level. But there is also a deeper purpose
accomplished by the Artisan Market is to support and build communities and help small business through buying their products.
The emphasis in these
collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independently, stable, and fulfilling lives. The artisan market is thus, a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping of unique handmade products.
Dar Life warmly congratulates the organizers and the vendors. Be sure to keep an eye on the next Artisan Market in May 2023!

CREATE A BASIC MARKETING PLAN
addresses?
place to achieve the future you want for this business.
Use the Six-Step Process Below to Create Your Basic Marketing Plan;
. What Do You Sell? Clearly define your product, including the features and benefits. Make a list of each product or service you offer, and under each one, list the corresponding benefits to the consumer.
. To Whom Do You Sell? Create a detailed customer profile. If you market directly to consumers, list demographics: age, gender, lifestyle, location, preferences, interests, etc. Where do they go? What do they read? Listen to? Watch? If you market to businesses, describe your ideal business client, include the size of company, number of employees, gross sales, location, etc. What do they want? What concerns and challenges do they face, especially those your product
.
What are you Going To Tell Them
?
3 6
Write a marketing message directed specifically to your target customer. Focus on the benefits (not features) you offer. Concentrate on one thing: what’s in it for them!
2 4 5
. Where A re Y ou Now ? You need this as a benchmark for future tracking. Make a note of current marketing activities, the costs involved and, if possible, the revenue they generate.
. Where Do You Want To Be And When?Visualize your business one, two and five years from now. What will it look like? Be specific. Consider what changes will need to take
.
How Do You Plan to Get There ?
Define specific, realistic marketing goals. Plan how you will measure the results. Decide which marketing strategies you will use, for example: networking, cold calling, mailings, advertising, website, emails, & promotional events. Select two or three you could use to jump-start your marketing.
Brainstorm the best tactics for each of the strategies you’ve selected. For example, if you chose networking as a strategy, your tactics might be to attend certain events each week, revise your 30-second commercial and produce marketing materials to hand out.
Assign time and dollar resources for each strategy you’ve chosen.
Follow your plan, regularly review progress, track the results and modify where necessary. When something produces good results, stick with it. If it doesn’t work, stop or adapt it. By writing one step a day or one step each week, you’ll soon have a simple written marketing plan to guide you and ensure that you get the best return on your marketing dollar as you grow your company in the right direction.

A WORLD-RENOWNED CELEBRATION OF TRUE ARTISAN WINE HERE IN DAR
Beaujolais Nouveau started as a French tradition and celebrates the end of harvest and the first wine of a new vintage, also refer to as Primeur. A worldrenowned celebration, Beaujolais Nouveau brings together, every year, over 60 million people from all parts of the world to taste a unique artisan wine.
Dar es Salaam’s Beaujolais Nouveau 2022 EditionCelebrated on the third Thursday in November, this year in Dar es Salaam, Beaujolais Nouveau took place on the fourth Thursday and gathered 600 guests at the French Ambassador’s residence for the past years. This unique event has now become “an experience” that hundreds of people in Dar es Salaam look forward to every year and this year as for the years prior, the event proved its renowned.
The success of this year’s event is a combination of relentless efforts of the Dar es Salaam Beaujolais Nouveau committee, dedicated partners, tireless service providers who together ensure that guests always have the best Beaujolais Nouveau experience.
The Beaujolais Nouveau event is definitely meant for enjoyment free of formalism but we don’t only meet for pleasure & leisure. All money remaining from the purchases and logistics of the Beaujolais event will be given as usual into charity as per past years.
From the French/Tanzanian inspired décor, entertainment by a French/Tanzanian band and a DJ, delicious cheeses and other food from France, to the tasty French baguettes (recognized this year on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage) freshly baked by Epi d’Or; it is
undeniable that the objective of providing an unforgettable Beaujolais experience to the guests was met. This year and for the past three years, Chef Alankalee also known as “Chef Alan” and his staff from the Melia Group (Zanzibar & Arusha) graced the evening and managed all food production, starting from the preparation to the final presentation.
With satisfied guests, the committee is honored of the outcome of the event. Many thanks to long-time sponsors, Bollore Transport and Logistics, ORYX Energies, Maurel & Prom, Barton and Guestier Red & White, CFAO Motors, Epi d’Or, the French Ambassy and Alliance Francaise of Dar es Salaam and the new sponsor SAGEMCOM.
