FANS TROLL CLUB OWNERS FROM THE ROOFTOP OF AFRICA

East African Regional Tourism Expo kicked off in Burundi, signalling new development of joint tourism in East Africa as a single tourist bloc. With a theme of “Rethinking Tourism for Social Economic Development in the East African Community,” the week long East African Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) second edition has attracted over 250 exhibitors from over 10 African countries, 120 international and regional travel agents, and buyers with about 2,500 trade visitors. Launched last year by the East African Community (EAC)Secretariat in Tanzania, the main objective of the regional tourism marketing and promotional platform is to promote EAC member countries as a single tourism destination.

SOUTHERN CIRCUIT TOURISM PROMOTION IN TOP GEAR

A group of adventurous Manchester United Football Club supporters have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania then sent a defiant message to the club’s owners from the world’s tallest freestanding mountain. The explorers had traveled to Tanzania then climbed the full 5,895 meters of the mountain to literally take their protests to the new heights on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Reds fans have been increasing their calls for the Glazer family to sell the club due to their displeasure over their operations. A number of anti-Glazer protests have already taken place again this season, with supporters vowing to continue these until the owners are gone.

Njombe town was a hive of activity as an ambitious marketing and tourism promotion strategy was launched to take tourism to the next level in Southern Tanzania. The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Pindi Chana launched various posters to promote tourism attractions in the Southern circuit. The posters will introduce the Southern Circuit tourism attractions which will be officially entered into the tourism map. Tourism is currently the second largest foreign exchange earner after gold after it was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is also the second largest contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) and the third largest contributor to employment. The sector generated 1.4 billion US dollars in revenues in 2021, up from 1.0 billion US dollars in 2020 when it was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on international travel. Tourism attractions in the Southern Circuit among others include Kitulo National Park at Makete District and Nyumbanitu Natural Forest at Wangingombe District in Njombe Region.

Bull elephants of the Ngorongoro Crater regularly descend to the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The large breeding herds wander throughout the

forest rim where they find the most suitable food. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dikdik and the rare mountain reedbuck. Jackals thrive in the crater and bat eared foxes live in the short grass areas. Predatory animals in the Ngorongoro Crater like leopards, lions, cheetahs, several cats, live off the abundant wildlife; large packs of hyenas roam the Ngorongoro crater, making their own kills and scavenging from others. Lions in particular are abundant in the Ngorongoro Crater. Thanks to the antipoaching patrols, the black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater are relatively safe and the numbers are increasing with time. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing the rhino in its natural environment. Birdlife in the Ngorongoro Crater is superb. The mixture of forest, canyons, grassland plains, lakes and marshes provided habitats for a wide range of birdlife.

THINGS TO BE SEEN AROUND NGORONGORO CRATER

Things to be seen around Ngorongoro Crater are Laetoli and Olduvai Gorge, Lake Magadi, Lerai Forest, Gorigor Swamp, The Grassland, Oldonyo Lengai, Olmoti Crater and Embakaai Crate, Lake Natron, Gol Mountains (Oldonyo Gol Hills), Nasera Rock, Oldeani Mountain, Lake Eyasi and Serengeti Plains.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NGORONGORO CRATER

Many people wonder when is the best time to go to the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is a year-round destination as most of the animals remain in the crater year-round, ensuring great sightings no matter when you decide to visit the Ngorongoro Crater.

LAETOLI AND OLDUVAI GORGE

At Laetoli, west of Ngorongoro Crater, hominid footprints were preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years ago and represent some of the earliest signs of

mankind in the world. Three separate tracks of a smallbrained upright- walking early hominid, Australopithecus Afarensis, a creature about 1.2 to 1.4 meters high, were found. Imprints of these are displayed in the Olduvai museum. More advanced descendants of Laetoli’s hominids were found further north, buried in the layers of the I00 metres deep Olduvai Gorge.

Excavations, mainly by the archaeologists, Louis and Mary Leakey, yielded four different kinds of hominid, showing a gradual increase in brain size and in the complexity of their stone tools. The first skull of Zinjanthropus commonly known as ‘Nutcracker Man’, who lived about 1.7 million years ago, were found here. The excavation sites have been preserved for the public viewing and word continues during the dry season, coordinated by the Tanzania government's department of antiquities.

ACTIVITIES AT OLMESERA

Tanzanite Tour

A lot of travelers tell us that they

the animals – and return for the people. That’s a testament to the warm, genuine hospitality on offer in Tanzania – equally fascinating, cultures that can be experienced in Tanzania. This is a country of storytellers, where myths and legends are passed down from generation to generation. African Galleria is

a place where you can meet the people behind the pieces, from the ebony wood carvers, jewelry designers, painters, craftsmen and chefs.

You know you are buying quality jewellery when you purchase a Tanzanite right in the heart of Tanzania. But have you ever wondered exactly how these precious stones are mined? At the African Galleria we have built a makeshift-mine on our property so that you can experience the life-cycle of each Tanzanite. There is also a ‘peek-window’ where you can watch our jewellers hard at work crafting your next one of a kind jewellery piece. Put some sparkle into your life by going on African Galleria’s Tanzanite Tour.

Ebony Tour

Tanzania is one of the only countries in the world that ethically produce ebony products. If you want to know

more and see for yourself, we recommend you go on the Ebony Tour. There you will get to see the jaw dropping transformations that these artists create. See them in action, turning a seemingly average looking tree stump, into amazing artworks that will take your breath away. Go on, have a look - seeing is believing!

Painting Tour

When people hear the word African, there are a few things

that instantly springs to mind. Going on an African Safari; experiencing the unique African culture and (probably most notably) seeing the wonderful talent and passion expressed in their works of art. At African Galleria, we appreciate art and we are proud to work alongside some of the best artists Tanzania has to offer. We have created a proverbial portal between client and creator, by giving the buyer a chance to shake hands with the artists themselves.

CRDB Bank Ngalawa race’ gathers traction of tourists in Zanzibar

The Kizimkazi Festival held on August 30, 2022, in Zanzibar has shown how the archipelago can be the indispensable driver for sports tourism through a boat race popularly known as a ‘Ngalawa race’.

Entering

its second edition this year, the fun-filled festival has witnessed a massive turnout for the intense competition of 20 talented competitors of the Ngalawa race from Kizimkazi Mkunguni and Kizimkazi Dimbani.

The competition was sponsored by the CRDB Bank for the second time in a row, amplifying the bank’s emphasis on its efforts to help promote sports on the islands.

Zanzibar’s Social Development minister, Riziki Pembe Jum said the ‘CRDB Bank Ngalawa Race’ competition organized by the Bank in the Kizimkazi Festival is an example of traditional games that promote tourism on the islands.

Speaking while opening this year’s competition on the beaches of Kizimkazi Mkunguni, she said, “I believe that this sport will help add value to our beaches by providing entertainment to tourists visiting our islands, as well as creating employment

for our youths.”

She posed a challenge to the ministries of sports and tourism to endlessly collaborate with the bank to develop the sport. In addition, she thanked the CRDB Bank for being at the forefront of supporting the Government’s efforts in addressing the challenges facing society and bringing development to the people.

“Let me congratulate you on the way you are giving up yourself to help the community. Your funding in development projects here in Kizimkazi portrays your inner craving for improving the lives of Tanzanians.”

For her part, the CRDB Bank’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations, Ms. Tully Mwambapa, said the bank has decided to invest in the boat race because it is one of the traditional games in the country which if promoted well, can lift high the culture of Zanzibaris and attract tourists to come and visit the flashy isles.

34 Dar Life I OCTOBER 2022

“Her Excellency, the President Samia Suluhu Hassan has made great strides in promoting tourist attractions in the country through the ‘Royal Tour’ film, as a leading and patriotic lender in the country, we have seen it is good to support these efforts through this competition which traces its roots in the isles,” she noted.

Unfolding a further goal for hosting it for the second year in a row through the Kizimkazi Festival, she said the CRDB Bank is also determined to leverage such a race to empower young people economically by com mercializing it just like other sports.

“In carrying out this mission, this year we have handed over new equipment worth Sh50 million including modern boats rescue

buoys to all 20 participants. This has added a lot of motivation to the participants as this year’s race seemed to be very competitive.”

The CRDB Bank spent more than Sh65 million to sponsor other games in the Kizimkazi Festival including; football, netball, nage, bicycle racing, bao, coconut husking, tug of war, and painting. The bank also built a complete modern science laboratory with its equipment in the Kizimkazi School worth Sh50 million. The laboratory aims at motivating students to study science subjects.”

The 20 participants competed in races of two miles for two rounds, whereby Khatib Haji Hamis, a

resident of Kizimkazi Mkunguni, emerged the winner, taking home prize money of Sh2.5 million and a fishing boat for his group from the village he comes from.

Juma Ramadhani Haji from the village of Kizimkazi Mkunguni was the runner-up, who walked away with prize money of Sh1 million, and third was Muhammad Ambar Mpate from the same village, who walked away with Sh700,000 and fourth was Daudi Wajihi Zahor, a resident of Kizimkazi Dimbani, who was awarded Sh500,000.

The coveted festival marked its end on Saturday, August 3, 2022, where the official guest was the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Solution Hassan, where among other things, development projects were handed over.

TANZANIAN FASHION FESTIVAL

Be stylish, be unique - African fashion slogan

Tanzania Fashion Festival is an annual event that brings together day time fashion shows with a summer theme, Live jazz music, Bongo flava and dance. The 5th edition of Tanzanian Fashion Festival was held in the city of Dar Es Salaam, at the Terrace, Slipway hotel.

The fashion festival has been organised by Fashion entrepreneur and former Fashion presenter Deogratius Kithama since 2018. The platform gives young designers a chance to present their collections. The idea of creating a beautiful event has grown into a largescale project.

Guests were ushered in an orange and gold decorated venue that set the tone of opulence from the get go! Those in attendance included Italian Ambassador - Marco Lombardi and Indonesia Ambassador - Tri Yogo Jatmiko.

The show was opened by iconic Tanzanian Top model based in France Miriam Odemba, who accompanied founder Deogratius as they opened in front of an elite crowd.

Then Host Bhoke Egina called one designer after another as they paraded their summer ready designs. In between the fashion shows guests enjoyed some funky jazz tunes, and later a surprise performance from Damian Soul performing Hit song ‘Mapopo’ drove the crowd into a frenzy before reigning Miss Tanzania 2022 Halima Kopwe closed the show in a red knee-high slit and glittery crown as she gave an audience a run for their money.

A total of 21 designers participated, 17 new, 5 wellknown designers such as Waiz, Bahati, Victoria Martin.

She showed off some of her most iconic pieces, like the kaftans and

One of the most outstanding shows was the Noor Design fashion show. Italian Guia Martinotti opened the Tanzanian fashion brand Noor Design, inspired by Tanzanian culture, especially the traditions of the Maasai. The Maasai are an East African tribe, one of the most famous in Tanzania.

recycled shirts that are always present in her collections, but the real highlight of the show was her interpretation of Maasai shuka. The traditional way the Maasai wear their shuka is to wrap it around the body and secure it in place with a belt.

Shuka is traditionally worn by Maasai men, but Noor Design thinks the fabric looks great on women too. Shuka’s past is still a mystery, but it’s poised to conquer the future. Before the colonisation

of Africa, the Maasai wore leather clothing, and only in the 1960s was it replaced with cotton fabric.

Currently, Shuka fabric is commonly produced in Tanzania, Kenya, China and Indonesia. There are many variations of Shuka, the heavier Maasai blankets, and the more typical square plaid striped pattern used by many designers around the world.

At Noor Design, we love tubular chokes, which are mostly handcrafted without the use of modern machinery.

The goal is to transform the traditional men’s shuka into trendy urban wear, also for women, and if we succeed, we will preserve the heritage, as well as create increased demand to support local producers.

Fashion Festival is a celebration of beauty, joy for the audience, and promotion of talented designers.

Wild & Beauty of

Mikumi

Paradise for Nature Lovers

If you have chosen the southern circuit for your adventure safari, then a visit to Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, Mikumi, is likely to be on your program. Four to five hours drive on comfortable roads will take you to this park which is known for hosting a wealth of Tanzania’s national animal, the giraffe.”

If you want to spend your holiday in a majestic natural area, the grand Mikumi National Park is the place to be. Established in 1964, Mikumi is the fourth largest national park in the world, enclosing an area of about 3230 square kilometers. Located south of Dar es Salaam right on the main Morogoro Iringa Highway, it is the first national park stop on the Tanzania southern circuit safari. The word Mikumi comes from a local word for Borassus palm trees referred to as Mikuky. Mikumi was the name given to the villages created by a tribal chief of Wavindunda community with the name of Mtwahela Kikuwi (pronounced mm-twahhe-laa Kee-kuu-wee).

Mikumi National Park has two

main sections divided by the main road.

The Northwest Section: is where most guests undertake their wildlife and birdlife viewing expeditions made possible by existing safari tracks. The Mkata flood plains aid the ecosystem by creating pools of water and therefore creating a sustainable environment for the plants and wildlife. The vegetations predominantly found are mixed grassland with acacia, baobab, sausage, tamarind and few small palms trees. Game driving further into the park or staying at the Foxes Tented Camp, itself lying on a hill, the majestic view of the Rubeho and Uluguru mountains can be seen, which are part of the pre-Cambrian rocks formed over 600 million years ago.

The Southeast Section: is not conducive to the safari experience because of its underdeveloped infrastructure. Guests staying at the Vuma Hills Tented Camp can experience the rugged and wilderness experience from a geological and Vegetation perspective.

Visiting Mikumi National Park during the dry season can aid a safari experience by the fact that the dried up vegetation and the brown soil creates a superb hue during sunrises and sunsets.

Wildlife and Birdlife Experience at Mikumi National Park: The wildlife viewing experience at Mikumi National Park can

be experienced right upon entering the park where guests can encounter baboons, zebras and impalas speedily crossing the road. Making a right turn after paying the park fees leads you right into the Kikoboga-Mikumi Wildlife Camp, where guests can watch the elephants in the distance splattering them with mud. Circulation around the Kisungura road circuit leads you to the hippo pool, which is best visited during the evenings when the distant setting sun and the bobbing heads of the hippos create perfect pictures. Next to the flood plain, guests might see birds such as crowned cranes, kingfishers, hornbills and storks each having a sharp eye out for anything that might

WHY VISIT MIKUMI

WHY VISIT MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

NATIONAL PARK

First Park on the Southern Safari Circuit: Mikumi National Park is the first stop on the southern safari circuit, allowing guests an enjoyable break with a wildlife viewing experience on route to Ruaha National Park.

• Excellent Biodiversity: Mikumi offers the opportunity to view a diverse number of animals and birds in a short period of time without too much driving around.

• Personalized Wildlife Watching: With relatively few numbers of people undertaking the southern safari circuit by road, Mikumi is one of the most under-visited parks in Tanzania.

• Accommodation Fairly Priced: Accommodations in Mikumi National Park cater to all personalities and budgets, making it a must-visit park for any person visiting Tanzania.

• Unique Wildlife Experience: Safari guides often state that it is easier to spot a tree-climbing lion in Mikumi National Park than to spot one in Lake Manyara National Park.

slither or move in the water or on the grassy patches. Traversing further northwest, heading to the Foxes Safari Camp, may lead you to wallowing buffalos taking advantage of Mkata flood plains small catchments or you might see the unpublicized treeclimbing lions of Mikumi National Park. Crisscrossing the safari road tracks of the Mikumi National Park can lead you to the ultimate treat of viewing the giraffes that are being debated by many naturalists to be a cross between the Maasai and reticulated giraffe because of their compromising patterns.

What To Do?

Game drives and guided walks are great options. Manu guests enjoy visiting the snake park in Mikumi village. Guests can also visit the nearby Udzungwa Mountains, or travel on for more wildlife safari in Selous or Ruaha.

Best Time to Visit

Mikumi National Park’s dry season starts around mid-May lasting to mid-November, with patches of transition time between January and February when rains switch from the short to the long rains. Long rains start from around the middle of February tapering off by the middle of May.

Getting there

A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, roughly a 4 hour drive. There are also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous and local buses run from Dar to park HQ where Tanzania Safari game drives can be arranged.

Lodges & Camps

Mikumi national park lodges are located outside the park around Mikumi town and some

in the neighboring protected areas. The park has two lodges that are located inside, 3 tented camps and 3 public campsites. Like any other protected areas in Tanzania, Mikumi national park lodges are categorized in to three categories those are Luxury lodges, Mid-range lodges and Budget lodges. Its true that few lodges are located inside the park but most of them are found around the park.

Mikumi National Park’s wonderful wildlife experience, along with its perfect location on route to Ruaha National Park, makes it a must-visit during a Tanzania safari.
