anzibar is the semiautonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site. Portuguese invasion and control of the Swahili Coast in the late 16th century ended the golden age of the archipelago, although the Omani Arabs returned
to power less than a century later. Today, many of the winding streets and high townhouses of old Stone Town remain unchanged and visitors can walk between the sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders, the Portuguese fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city. Day-long spice tours to working plantations offer visitors the chance to observe the cultivation of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that have made the island famous. The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast, and although the beaches of Mangapwani, where slave caves are visible at low
Zanzibar’s Coastline Offers Some Of The Best Beaches In The World, But Sand And Surf Vary Depending On What Side Of The Island You’re On. On The East Coast, Waves Break Over Coral Reefs And Sand Bars Offshore, And Low Tide Reveals Small Pools Of Starfish, Small Minnows, And Anemones. Up North, Ocean Swimming Is Much Less Susceptible To The Tides, And Smooth Beaches And White Sand Make For Dazzling Days In The Sun.”
tide and nearby Bububu are less than half an hour’s drive away, a night or two spent on the east or north cost is well worth the extra hour it takes to drive there. That said, the Chole Island Marine Park just off Stone Town – and nearby Prison, Grave, and Snake Islands – make a refreshing day-trip and a good break from exploring the winding passageways of the old city. On the south coast of Zanzibar lies the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island. Roads to the southeast coast take visitors through the Jozani Forest, home to Zanzibar’s rare Red Colobus monkeys and a
number of other primate and small antelope species. THE ISLANDS OF ZANZIBAR Zanzibar has many offshore islands, which provide a stunning location for a day trip or a longer stay. Boats to any of the islands off Zanzibar or Pemba can be hired easily from local fishermen. In Stone Town, ask at the ‘big tree’ opposite Mercury’s restaurant on the seafront, or arrange a day trip with one of the tour companies listed in this guide. CHAPWANI ISLAND A slightly more upmarket choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave island, is the site of a luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar
and restaurant are permitted. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims of the World War One attack on the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg are also buried here. It’s interesting to wander around the graveyard and decipher the ages and causes of death of the servicemen – many died from tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers. Chapwani also has a beautiful white sandy beach and a small population of duikers (a type of miniature antelope), as well as some interesting birdlife. SENSE OF HEARING
PATIENT, SAFETY, QUALITY & CARE BY AGA KHAN HOSPITAL, DAR ES SALAAM
T
he outer ear is the part that is visible to us, all the way down the ear canal and up to the ear drum. The ear canal is where wax can build up – earwax is actually the body’s defence against dirt and other things that may enter the ear, and it also has antibacterial properties to keep our ears clean and healthy. Sometimes, however, it may become impacted and block off the ear canal, causing the feeling of a blocked ear and pain at times. It then needs to be removed by a professional (not with cotton buds!). Sounds go down the ear canal and hit the ear drum, which vibrates the bones in the middle ear. The three bones in the middle ear are the smallest bones in the body, and are responsible for detecting tiny movements of the ear drum and then passing on the vibrations into the inner ear. The middle ear also contains the eustachian tube, which connects to our nose and throat and ensures that the pressure in the middle ear is equalized with external pressure. However, because of this, sometimes when we get a cold or a throat infection we also experience pain and fullness in our ears. The inner ear has two portions; the cochlea (organ of hearing), and the balance organs. It is fluid-filled, and the cochlea consists of thousands of tiny hair cells that detect vibrations in the fluid that come from the middle ear. These hair cells then pass the sounds on to the brain via the cochlear nerve, creating nerve impulses in a way similar to the playing of a piano! Most sensorineural hearing losses are due to the loss of hair cells in the cochlea, caused by things like age, use of ototoxic medication, over-exposure to loud noises, etc. and are non-reversible.

Hearing Loss For some people, the cause of hearing loss is the result of a gradual buildup of earwax, which blocks the ear canal and prevents conduction of sound waves. Earwax blockage is a cause of hearing loss among people of all ages. In most cases, however, hearing loss results from damage to the inner ear. Aging and prolonged exposure to loud noise may cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Higher pitched tones may become muffled to you. It may become difficult for you to pick out words against background noise. Heredity may make you more prone to these changes. Ear infection and abnormal bone growths or tumors of the outer or middle ear can cause hearing loss. A ruptured eardrum also may result in loss of hearing. Getting Your Hearing Tested In adults and compliant children, hearing is typically tested using the pure-tone audiometry measurement. Audiometry is a completely painless, relatively quick test that determines your level of hearing. They work by recording your responses to certain sounds and pitches, and

During an audiometry, you will be sat down and given a pair of stereo headphones. These go over your ears, and a series of short sounds will be played at various volumes and pitches. These sounds will be played in your left ear, right ear, and both ears. Then, your results are recorded on a graph – an audiogram. Both your left and right ear will be recorded separately, and their results can vary widely or match with one another. This graph will show how well you hear at certain volumes and frequencies.

a spotty complexion. Increased sweat, humidity and application of sunscreen block the pores, promoting the formation of bacteria build-up. Ensure clean skin with a balancing cleanser and apply a cleansing or repair mask twice a week. Feet
Feet first – require special care in the summer. Keep nails short to enjoy summer sports activities. Exfoliate feet regularly, and don’t lighten up on rich, emollient foot creams, because parts of the feet contain no oil glands. If you visit the beach, take a long walk. No manmade treatment equals the exfoliation power of feet pounding against sand.
Hydrate – Ensure you drink plenty of water during the hot months, especially if you are very active. If you start drinking water once you feel thirsty it means that you are already slightly dehydrated. Always try to carry bottled water around with you.
Remove hair wisely – Shave, wax, or use your depilatory at least 24 hours before you head into the sun. All three removal methods can leave the skin mildly irritated, making it more susceptible to burning and stinging in the sun. Moisturize - Excessive heat can dehydrate the skin, so it’s important to keep it moisturized during the summer, even if your skin feels oily. More sebum is a sign that your skin could be dehydrated. It’s tempting to skip moisturizer in the summer because of excess oils on the skin. Use a lotion instead of a creme—it contains more water and less oil.
