We are giving an even bigger shout than usual to women in this issue. With the Women of the World Festival (WOW) now in its 10th year, more and more women are speaking up and speaking out. Some start early like the Inspiring Vanessa who is a multi-award-winning motivational speaker at age 13 and Anneliese Day, who became a QC at 38 and is one of the 500 most influential people in the UK and a great supporter of other women. Our Inspiring Woman, Diane Tapner-Evans, has worked her way to the top post Richmond Hill Hotel by being an exceptional team player. Dame Darcey Bussell is another one of our amazing women, giving back by leading the way in fitness through dance in schools. Business woman Rebecca Saunders has also brought a new approach to retail in Richmond with her Seekology pop-up store. For more interesting reading from our regular contributors Dr De-Stress, stylists Anita Feron Clark and Emma Reed and Lyndsay Russell have lots more to say. Don’t miss our favourite restaurants either – spring is a great time to branching out. There is still time to book for Mother’s Day and Easter celebrations! With warm wishes for spring, Marja-Leena, Editor

The Lady ON THE HILL

Diane Tapner-Evans shares her experience as Richmond Hill’s longest serving female general manager Our Editor Marja-Leena chats with Diane Tapner-Evans at Richmond Hill Hotel

I

’ve been the general manager of Richmond Hill Hotel, on and off, for more than 17 years and my journey at the hotel started nearly three decades ago. In many ways, our green corner of the capital reminds me of the home where I grew up in Kent - the garden of England. It was there that I grew to love the outdoors and horse riding as a child, and still love pursuing both of these activities in our leafy London suburb. My career in hospitality really started when I went to Bournemouth University, to study a BSc in Hotel

Management. Studying by the sea was utterly inspiring and, after a brief stint of graduate underwriting work in London I started my first job at Richmond Hill Hotel in 1991. I then worked my way through restaurant manager and operations roles before becoming general manager at the start of the millennium and heading up the team until 2007 when it was time to take on some exciting new career challenges. So in 2007, with a husband and three children in tow, I moved to Maidenhead where I launched the opening of the Harte and Garter Hotel in Windsor. This was an extremely exciting chapter in my hospitality career and I learnt the importance

of effective recruitment as without the right people alongside you it is difficult to deliver your vision. I returned to Richmond Hill Hotel 10 years ago now and have loved every moment of working here. I’ll always look at Richmond Hill Hotel as the loveliest old building in the town, steeped in history since its opening as the “Queens Hotel” back in 1723. Since returning as general manager, we’ve lovingly refurbished every aspect of the original Georgian property, maintaining many of the original eighteenth century features and bringing out the period beauty which in some other locations has been lost sadly.

We’ve worked with local blacksmiths and carpenters and designers to create bespoke furniture for each of the bedrooms with a nod in design to Richmond Park’s wildlife; partnered with Heals to ensure our guests keep talking about our super mattresses, which provide the best sleep experience; and most recently we’ve been delighted to unveil 144 On The Hill, our all day dining restaurant, bar and terrace. We’re incredibly lucky to work in such a beautiful location which can accommodate modern business needs from central London and beyond, whilst also being the perfect getaway destination for relaxing retreats just outside of the capital. My favourite spot in Richmond is the terrace overlooking Petersham meadows - it’s just a couple of minute’s walk from the hotel and you can always spot the most incredible sunsets throughout the year. As a landmark place to visit and conduct business in the community, I’m keen for the hotel to contribute back to the surrounding Richmond area. I’m an active board member of The Richmond Business Improvement District (BID), and work alongside a fantastic team who are passionate about making 6

Richmond a fabulous place to live, work and play. Our ambition is to grow the town whilst protecting its unique heritage and

here at the hotel. We’ve made great inroads in becoming greener in 2019/20: investing in a new kitchen range to reduce our CO2 emissions, changing our cooking methods to reduce food waste; improving in room heating control to prevent energy wastage; and being stricter and more inventive with our recycling methods as a team.

green credentials as the largest green space in London. One of my favourite BID initiatives is the paddleboarding Thames clean-up in which the hotel team takes part every June to help clear the river of plastic pollution.

I’m often asked how I juggle managing the running of a hotel alongside family life. Certainly the biggest challenge I find as a woman in business is balancing work life with family commitments - there is an overriding sense of guilt sometimes as you try to allocate your time effectively between being a mum, supporting your children and managing a busy business. I’m sure this is something many other women find, but my children and husband act as a reminder that the work I’m doing is valid and worthwhile.

What’s more, I truly believe that there’s no better job than running a hotel in such a standout location. It’s a very diverse and rewarding role. You arrive in the morning open to what the day may bring, and many of the relationships I’ve built with guests have lasted for years, as we’ve helped them to create treasured memories they’ll never forget through weddings or other special occasions.”

Dame Darcey Bussell HEADER (FUTURA PT LIGHT 10PT / 90% K)

HAS A NEW WAY TO GET KIDS ACTIVE

I

t’s true, I basically want everyone to experience dance. The nice thing is that it does not have to be done at a high standard to get all the attributes and improve your wellbeing. Dance around the kitchen table, at a Silver Swans ballet class, socially, it doesn’t matter. Since returning from living in Sydney in 2012, I have been fortunate to have worked with the amazing team on Strictly, which was an extraordinary seven years, and I have also been involved with some wonderful dance charities and I enjoy that a lot. Amongst them is the Royal Academy of Dance and I am honoured to be president. 8

The RAD is the leading ballet syllabus in the world. This is something we should all be really proud of as young people receive about 20 million hours of ballet coaching from RAD teachers every year, worldwide. The RAD is something us in the South West are going to hear more about as they are just about to move into their brand-new headquarters in Wandsworth with seven beautiful studios. With the RAD celebrating its centenary this year, there is also going to be a exciting exhibition celebrating British dance at the V&A museum opening in May. One project that I spend a lot of my time on is Diverse Dance Mix (DDMIX) which

read more at darlingmagazine.co.uk spring 20

is a social enterprise that I founded. DDMIX’s aim is to have dance fitness as part of regular PE in as many schools as possible. We are up to 42, there are 24,000 schools in the UK so we have a lot of work to do! Dance fitness is the most wonderfully concentrated package of wellbeing for students of the 21st century. With current low levels of participation in physical activity, we clearly need more ways to engage and inspire our children to move. I‘m not saying we should replace team sports and athletics but it’s time to add other elements. As you know just as well as Photography Alexander Rhind

INSPIRING WOMAN

Dance fitness in schools should be a physical and mental wellbeing essential Dame Darcey I do, we are also living in an era where our young people are going to spend most of their working lives and a good part of their social lives in front of a screen. If they have this technology at their fingertips already, and it is so stimulating and they are losing the pleasure of being active, we must give them the tools to create balance in their lives. Dr Marco Narici, featuring on a BBC program hosted by Angela Rippon, stated: ‘When you go to the gym, it is repetitive and you work on single muscles or muscle groups.

Whereas dance stimulates so many more systems: the brain, nerves, muscles, ligaments… dancing facilitates the cross talk of the muscle and the nerves, making a much more holistic comprehensive exercise’. If you think about it for a minute, dance is a full body work out and aerobic, it provides an appreciation of rhythm and teaches musicality, it is another form of expression, it engages the imagination, it is social, is completely inclusive and best of all: is cheap and great fun. In order for it to be completely inclusive, I knew that the answer for schools was not in specialized dance, like ballet or Latin. However, with my Presidential hat on, I do completely endorse specialized dance training when it comes to those young people who want to dedicate their time to dance. But dance fitness, with lots of different genres, delivered simply and enthusiastically, can

provide all the attributes to every child and can be put directly into PE. At DDMIX we have spent four years getting the delivery system right so that any teacher can become confident in teaching dance fitness very quickly. On the 25th of March we are holding one of our school’s festivals at the Arthur Cotterell theatre in Kingston, where we get as many schools as possible to come and experience Diverse Dance Mix. So if you know a school in the South West that would benefit from the DDMIX programme, do please get in touch. Right, I’m off to pick up my daughters and walk the dogs and perhaps do a dance move or two on the common. Please excuse me if I disturb your walk! n ddmixforschools.com royalacademyofdance.org

Women Of The World Festival celebrates 10 years With the biggest and boldest festival yet

T

This year’s event culminates on the International Women’s Day and features talks, debates, performances, workshops and the

in for an evening of converstion exploring the publica-tion’s ongoing movement, sharing stories of female trailblazers setting the agenda across the globe. As the London Mayoral Debate heats up the 2020 electoral candidates, including Sadiq Khan and Mandu Reid (Women’s Equality Party) also take to the stage. #March4Women Rally is the ultimate International Women’s Day activity with an urgent call to action for women on the front line of the climate crisis. It’s a Care International initiative and

Previous years’ guests have included Annie Lennox, Beverley Knight, Michael Sheen, Emeli Sandé, Sue Perkins, Layla Hussein, Muzoon Almellehan, Helena Bonham Carter, Bianca Jagger and David Tennant. Women’s Parliament is one of the hot topics at WOW. If women ran Parliament, what would it look like? Women are underrepresented across the board in British politics, both in parliament and at local council level. As more and more women leave public office, it could undo any progress that has been made towards getting 50:50 representation in recent years. The panel discussion

The festival will also be remembering Toni Morrison, the seminal American author, with performances, readings and tributes from special guests and is a joyful response to the life, influence and legacy of this Nobel Prize winner. Look out for even more amazing women in the programme: Naomi Wolf, Shazia Mirza, Scarlett Curtis, Sandi Toksvig, Mary Robinson, Elif Shafak, Julia Gillard, Caroline Criado Perez, Emma Dabiri, Shazia Mirza, Bobby Baker and live recordings of two of the UK’s most popular podcasts, Scarlett Curtis: Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and The Guilty Feminist.

will bring together 25 girl led and girl centered groups from across the globe to celebrate their trailblazing achievements. Over the past 10 years WOW Festivals have reached more than two million people across six continents, from Baltimore to Brazil, Cardiff to Karachi. In 2018, Jude Kelly founded The WOW Foundation to run the global movement as an independent charitable organisation. It produces festivals across the world to celebrate women and girls, and raise awareness globally of the issues they face and possible solutions. Led by Kelly, the organisation works to build, convene and sustain a global movement that believes a gender equal world is possible and desirable through WOW festivals and empowering women and girls.

There will also be two award ceremonies. Women on the Move Awards 2020: The Greatest Hits presented by Samira Ahmed, which celebrates inspirational leadership from migrant and refugee women and will this year bring together previous winners to celebrate 10 years of WOMA including Mariam Yusuf, Joon Lynn Goh and Rossana Leal; and With and For Girls Awards with WOW, which

YOUR WARDROBE Most women wear only 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time

H

ere are my top tips to help you fall in love with your clothes again and to make your wardrobe work harder for you in 2020 and beyond. Start by taking everything out of your wardrobe, vacuum it and wash it down with a damp cloth. Add lots of lavender bags or hooks to keep moths away from your knitwear. Top up with a couple of drops of lavender oil.

trousers, skirts, etc., and by colour: red jumpers, black jumpers, blue jumpers, etc. That way you’ll see where the colour and item gaps are. There have to be key pieces in your wardrobe that work hard throughout the year and suit your lifestyle, whether that’s work, rest or play.

Invest in good quality, non-slip hangers. Those from the dry cleaners will ruin shoulder lines. Place the hangers the right way round and hang only clean clothes. They should be zipped and buttoned up. Create enough hanging space. You want to hear a swishing sound when you move hangers, not a scrape and a heave of a bulging wardrobe!

Once you’ve identified the gaps, write a shopping list. Then shop for those missing items - and only those. This requires resilience and self control. Good luck!

Make sure you have a good balance of neutrals and colours in your wardrobe; usually a 50/50 split is ideal. Group your wardrobe by clothing type: jumpers, tops,

Avoid over washing or dry cleaning your clothes as this causes colour loss and can damage the fabric and mis-shape the clothes through shrinkage or stretching.

Anita Feron Clark

If you haven’t worn something for over a year, ask yourself why not? If it’s too tight, too big, doesn’t really suit me, an heirloom, a gift you’d feel guilty giving away ... store it elsewhere. You want everything left to be the right colour and size for now. Get your clothes altered so you fall in love with them again. I use The Wardrobe Curator in Clapham Junction - they can turn their hand to anything. It’s cheaper than buying something new and anyway, you may not find a suitable alternative for an item you once loved. www.thewardrobecurator.co.uk Why not rent or sell clothes or accessories that you seldom or no longer wear? That way you’ll make room for key pieces. Try www.mywardrobehq.com

WELLBEING PROMO HEADER

Seekology - bringing you independent

beauty & wellbeing brands and amazingly many of the products are sourced from local entrepreneurs

O

ur Editor Marja-Leena visited Rebecca Saunders, the founder of Seekology, to find out what lies behind her bright and beautiful Richmond pop-up store. “I know that customers are seeking out unusual products but don’t always know where to turn, particularly in beauty which is dominated by big, international players. Yet simultaneously there is a huge amount of innovation in these categories, especially with sustainability, natural products and small batch production. Seekology marries these needs, from customers and brands, bringing together a thoughtfully curated assortment under one roof.

How do you choose the brands that you feature? We have already supported over 50 independent brands from skincare to socks to stationery. I set a high bar, since the Seekology customer – whilst interested in sustainability and provenance – won’t compromise on style or quality. One exciting aspect of launching Seekology

launching a brand and some much needed meditation in the store.

Why did you choose Richmond? has been discovering inspiring local entrepreneurs. These include Abbie from skincare brand Freya + Bailey, Naomi - who trained with Neal’s Yard and runs Heka Aromatherapy – and Natalie from Avenue Richmond; I met her when she walked into the store and we are now her first ever stockist!

Why is Seekology different? We rotate our products every few weeks; it’s a flexible business model for our partners and keeps things fresh for customers. It sounds obvious, but many retailers can’t be this agile, whereas we were able to focus on gift sets in the run up to Christmas and yoga and aromatherapy for Spring. We also tell the stories behind our brands through the shopfloor environment, our well-trained team and a regular events programme: recent topics included veganuary, sustainability,

I’m local (from St Margarets), and I wanted to create something to support a nearby high street. Richmond has a fantastic, vibrant community of independent retailers and Seekology complements these perfectly. Where possible I’ve also worked with other local businesses for everything from store design to product photography.

What’s next for Seekology? We will soon close the doors on our Richmond pop up and are planning some exciting events and collaborations (details on social media and our website shortly). We have also just launched a transactional website offering customers the opportunity to shop in their own time, as well as reaching more people beyond Richmond. And I hope to have another store by next Christmas! No.5 George Street, Richmond TW9 1JY seekology.co

acupuncture With a secret incredient of the ‘Sasha effect’

S

asha Young-Dumont at Serenity Medica is a qualified practitioner of TCM acupuncture. One of her clients, Jacqueline Keir, found help for health issues and also discovered anti-ageing facial acupuncture. “I was looking for a local acupuncturist to help with long term medical issues which had me taking pills every day and affecting my day to day life. Sasha’s website was easy to navigate and the testimonials were all glowing. She also does facial acupuncture, which I had heard of but knew few details. I am in my 60’s and didn’t want to go the Botox route, so this seemed like a great, natural alternative.

She really is my Wrinkle Fairy On my free one hour consultation we discussed my health issues and I also asked about the facial acupuncture. I instantly felt at ease with Sasha who suggested that we start with the health issues

and clear that before starting on my face, which made me see that she really cared about my health. I was taking 3 steroids a day for my illness and after my first 6 week course I was down to zero. difference after just one session, my skin was glowing. After the 12th session the wrinkles were a lot less deep and I looked and felt younger. We laugh a lot in our sessions. It feels like having a catch up with a good friend.

I was ready for facial acupuncture. Before each treatment Sasha spends time asking about my week. She makes notes and sketches to show where I need the needles most. I was pleasantly surprised how relatively painless the facial needles are. They are tiny.

I co-own a lifestyle business called Stranger Than Them. Launching a new business can be extremely stressful and we network with a lot of people. I have had many comments about how well I look and people cannot believe my age. Old friends have asked me what products I use on my face. I am happy to share my secret the Sasha effect. She really is my “Wrinkle Fairy”!

After the needles are inserted I relax totally, and the 25 minutes they are left to work their magic feels like time flies. I could not believe the

Tagg’s Island an idyllic place with a thriving community

Clare Denning spent a day meeting many of the island’s welcoming residents.

T

agg’s island lies on the Thames near Hampton Court and owes its name to the boat-builder Thomas Tagg, who moved there in the mid-19th century. Tagg built a hotel and transformed the island into a pleasure resort for British high society. The island sadly fell prey to financial collapse in the war years and by the 70s lay entirely derelict. Its revitalisation began with Gerry and Gillian Braban in 1980. Their son Grant, who kindly took me on a boat ride along the river to show me the island, manages the island now. He explained how his parents came across the island and discovered, in the abandoned hotel, the set

and installed electricity and water, thus transforming it into the community that it is today. One of the many residents I met, remarked: ‘it takes a particular sort of person to live on an island in a houseboat’. Let’s meet some of the artists and creatives who live and work here.

She has appeared on multiple public broadcasts (including The Archers), and designed and delivered learning programmes for leaders in the private and public sectors. Through storytelling, she helps her clients to share their successes and personal experiences. Suzanne strives to spend time with her family. To achieve this dream, Suzanne and her husband, David, are building a creative studio on their boat. Bob Gonella came to Taggs Island twenty years ago and has a studio on Platts island where he paints full-time. Bob’s figurative works include: waterscapes, snowscapes and interesting structures balanced with fantasy subjects. To him, the island is “cut off from the real world”, and a place where people live surrounded by plants and wildlife. The artists living on Tagg’s island are united in their love for the nature and the lifestyle it has to offer. Island life has propelled them in their creative work. Although they live somewhat idylically, they have made waves internationally in their careers.

Anneliese Day on becoming a QC at 38 and 38 weeks pregnant

lare Denning had the pleasure of meeting Anneliese Day QC, an exceptionally talented lawyer, over a coffee at Richmond Hill Hotel. Clare was struck by her candour, openness and warmth as Anneliese recounted the turning points in her life: the challenges, the breakthroughs, the ups and downs and everything in between.

As a child Anneliese had her heart set on becoming an actor. However, she can thank her father for turning her performing talents to pursuing a career as a barrister instead. This offered more security, intellectual challenge and came with the freedom of being self-employed. Both her parents

MIXED-SEX

civil partnerships Planning for you and your family Civil partnerships offer significant tax advantages from an estate planning perspective. Until recently, these were off limits to mixed-sex couples in committed relationships, who felt that the institution of marriage was not right for them. Now, thanks to the extension of civil partnerships to mixed-sex couples, these couples have an alternative means of enjoying these advantages. Whether you are currently in a civil partnership or are contemplating one in the future, it is important to understand how that status may impact your estate planning. Here are a few frequently asked questions that may shed some light on civil partnerships and what they mean for your Will. Does entering a civil partnership affect my existing Will? In most cases, your pre-existing Will is automatically revoked (cancelled) when you enter into a legally binding marriage or civil partnership. For this reason, we recommend that newly married couples or civil partners make new Wills as soon as possible. However, there is an exception to the rule above. This is where the Will expressly states that the person making the Will is making it with the anticipation of marrying or entering into a civil partnership with a particular individual. 26

If I die without leaving a Will, will my entire estate pass to my civil partner? When somebody dies without leaving a valid Will in England and Wales, their estate is distributed in accordance with the law known as ‘the rules of intestacy’. Many people assume that when they die their entire estate will pass to their surviving spouse or civil partner. However, if you have children and/or the value of your estate exceeds ÂŁ270,000, the position will often be different. Will the dissolution of my civil partnership affect my existing Will? Your Will does not automatically become invalid in these circumstances. However, once the Court has ordered a decree of dissolution (or decree absolute), any provisions in your will which benefit your ex-partner (or appoint them as the executor/ trustee of your estate) are automatically revoked. Your estate would then pass in accordance with the other terms of your Will. If there were no other beneficiaries named in your Will, the rules of intestacy will apply. We recommend that our clients make new Wills which better reflect their wishes after a dissolution or divorce. What does a civil partnership mean for my Will and my estate? There are significant incentives to formalising your relationship when it comes to tax. All individuals domiciled in England and Wales,

regardless of their marital status, benefit from a tax-free allowance of up to £325,000 known as the ‘Nil-Rate Band’ (NRB). For unmarried couples, anything left in the estate over this amount will normally attract inheritance tax (IHT) at 40%, subject to certain exemptions and reliefs. Crucially, civil partners and spouses domiciled in the UK can pass on the entirety of their estate to each other free of IHT. This is known as the ‘spouse exemption’. They can also make gifts to each other during their lifetime without reducing their NRB or attracting capital gains tax (CGT). Lifetime is one word transfers between unmarried couples, by contrast, reduce the transferor’s NRB if they do not survive the transfer by seven years. As an added bonus, civil partners and spouses are able to pass on their any unused tax free allowance (i.e. NRB) to the estate of the survivor of the two, creating a potential tax-free allowance of £650,000 on the second death. In limited circumstances, the Residence Nil-Rate Band (RNRB) will apply to offer further relief. It too can be transferred to the survivor.

Where only one spouse or civil partner is domiciled in England and Wales, the spouse exemption is limited to £325,000; in such cases the survivor can benefit from a combined tax-free allowance of up to £650,000 provided certain conditions are met. Alternatively, the nondomiciled individual can elect to be domiciled here, although this must be carefully considered. We have extensive experience of advising nondomiciled individuals in this situation. Equality and choice Overall, the extension of civil partnership to mixed sex couples is a win for equality and choice. From an estate planning perspective, more couples will benefit from a tax regime that undeniably rewards those who have formalised their relationship by way of marriage or civil partnership. business, I’ve learned that the ‘passivity’ of property investment is only applicable within specific parameters. For example, if you purchased a new build apartment, rented it out on a long-term,

But now, we have even less time, the resource we wanted most! When our ambitious financial desires clash with our time poor woes, ‘passive income’ is often touted as the panacea, “experience an abundance of money, for very little work!” so the rhetoric goes. Specifically, property investment is often cited as the ‘easiest and fastest’ way of achieving our middle class aspirations, something that can be done ‘on the side’ while holding down our full time jobs, children (if you have them) and other responsibilities. After 17 years in the property

By contrast, to maximise returns, you’d need to let out individual rooms (otherwise known as a HMO, House of Multiple Occupation), manage everything yourself and ensure that your purchase price stacked up against your rental income. Definitely not an endeavour for the time poor!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Paul Mendelson’s spring hand ‘I haven’t bid a Grand Slam in thirty years’, the mother of one of my friends announced when she joined one of my classes recently. However, with a bit of prompting, she was soon declaring 7♥ on a prepared hand…

Holding ten almost certain tricks, South opened the strongest possible bid, 2♣. North responded with 2♦ which, in the old days, was a negative, but is now more often played as a relay, denying a high quality 5-card suit. The key bid in the auction is the opener’s re-bid. If a 2♣ opener jumps in her suit, it says that this will be the trump suit whether partner likes it or not! 3♥ set the suit as hearts. All partner must do is to cue-bid any ace she holds in her hand. Hence, North’s 4♦ bid showed A♦ and South’s 5 ♣ bid showed A♣. North felt that her K♦ must be useful, so she cue-bid diamonds again, indicating K♦. That was enough to persuade South to bid the Grand Slam. Not expecting it to hold the trick, West led A♠. Sure enough, South trumped this and then made the crucial play. Realising that the fourth round of clubs was a loser, she laid down the A♣ and K♣ and trumped 7 ♣ in dummy with 10♥. Then, and only then, did she pull trumps and make the best contract of all. aceoftrumps.com

hearse procession and a formal style of service. Whilst direct cremation (a funeral without service) is a growing trend, it can feel too remote for a family overwhelmed at losing a loved relative or partner. What they want is a poignant way to say farewell in a private, understated way.

40.3% of those who took part in a survey of 2,560 people commissioned by White Rose Modern Funerals based in Teddington, said they’d like to dispense with the formalities and go for a ‘no fuss’ departure, with a further 15.7% saying they’d prefer to go straight to cremation or burial with no service and nobody present. A formal funeral service was the preferred choice of just 28.6% while 15.4% were unsure about their funeral choice.

We have organised many simple beautiful farewells attended by between 1 - 12 people that have helped to give them a sense of peace at their time of need. We have also organised many personalised full service funerals to accommodate far larger crowds where tradition and ceremony are a natural and fitting choice. As modern funeral directors we say there is no right or wrong way to hold a funeral. It is 100% about what is right for you as a family. At your time of need, this is what we help you with.

These results confirmed the growing trend we see with families at their time of need, when they approach us asking if it is possible to organise a simple yet respectful farewell. This decision isn’t always led by cost, it is a heartfelt feeling that they just don’t want the traditions of a sombre black

LEARN HOW TO MOVE BEYOND

death, divorce & other losses

W

e know that grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. Any loss, whether due to death, divorce, the ending of a relationship, loss of trust or even redundancy, can cause feelings of grief and despair as we think about our unfulfilled hopes, dreams and expectations. Those memories and feelings can often seem overwhelming and the future frightening and bleak.

As a society we are notoriously bad at dealing with grief. We are told that ‘time heals’, ‘to be strong’, ‘keep busy’, ‘don’t feel sad’. But it is normal to feel sad, fearful, disoriented, confused or even angry when we have suffered a significant loss or an unexpected change in our lives. Although sadness is normal and natural pain does not need to be. It is possible to live more fully in the present when what was painful about the past is completed.

Contrary to popular wisdom, time does not heal emotional wounds. Regardless of when your loss occurred, it is important to know that recovery is possible and that there are actions which can be taken to heal your heart and make you feel whole again.

The Grief Recovery Method is a powerful, dynamic, sensible and accessible programme that is genuinely for anyone willing to take the necessary actions to help themselves. As a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, I will guide you through this effective evidence

based 7 week course. At the end you will feel better and more able to re-engage with life. It will help you to let go of the pain, heal your heart and feel truly alive once more. Recovery means that we can look back and once again recall our happy memories without feeling a knife twist in our hearts. If you would like to know more about the Grief Recovery Method please contact me,

An international multi-award winning motivational speaker

That’s Inspiring Vanessa - she’s also a kidpreneur, YouTuber, model and author of two books

H

ow does she do it in between school and living a life of a busy South London teenager? One thing is evident from the first YouTube videos we saw of her, holding a large audience at the edge of their seats, that Vanessa is all but an ordinary girl. Vanessa’s journey began when she was only 9 years old and became one of the youngest motivational speakers in the UK. Vanessa’s

mission is to inspire children and adults around the world to believe in themselves and have the courage to be whoever they want to be. Her dream is to be on the Ellen Show, meet Ellen DeGeneres also help homeless people by creating a “Hotel for Homeless”. Vanessa has been trained and mentored by several top international speakers and has shared the stage with the likes of Jairek Robbins, Eric Thomas, Eric Ho, Caleb Maddix,

She’s also been interviewed on London Live TV, BEBB Online TV and Chrissy Show on Sky TV, appeared in Stylist magazine, The Voice newspaper and many other magazines in U.K., USA, Canada and Australia. In the past three years she has hosted London Kids Fashion Show, Croydon Has Talent, attended

INSPIRING WOMAN

One of her passions is to go to schools and speak about confidence and self-believe The Screen Nation Awards as guest presenter and been interviewed on the red carpet at WE DAY and the Screen Nation Awards. One of her passions is to go to schools and speak about confidence and self-believe. Vanessa lives for personal development and has more charisma and wisdom than most adults. Mindset; inspiration; motivation; love and fear, taking action and self-belief are her top topics. Vanessa’s mum Veronika Sam describes Vanessa as a happy and bubbly child, born with an abundance of creativity. When she was 9 years old, attending one of her first inspirational seminars with her mum, she met one of her idols, a motivational speaker both of them had been

following online. Not long after this Vanessa landed her first motivational speaking gig. Vanessa grew up in an environment that presented her a wide perspective of possibilities. She had entrepreneurs, YouTubers, motivational speakers amongst family friends and contacts. All of these different career paths related to Vanessa and she saw that through these choices she could carve a road for herself in what she wanted to do, help others. When she realised that talking and delivering speeches could do this and also give her the freedom to travel around the world, she saw it as the “the perfect job”. The reaction of many people, when Vanessa was starting out her speaking career, was naturally a little sceptical. How could a young child motivate others ‘to get back up’ and ‘to move on’ from blows and knocks life hands us, something she herself had never experienced? However, Vanessa was still able to recognise what made a story impactful and personal, and worth sharing, and

this was thanks to her upbringing. She was brought up by her mum, her father left them when she was two years old. Not having a father figure, or having an absent parent, always affects a child. Despite her young age, she has been able to draw lessons from these experiences that were extremely hard to deal with. It was a very hard time for both them, but they knew they had each other and would get through it.

How could a young child motivate others ‘to get back up’ and ‘to move on’ Vanessa still attends school full-time, and focuses and works on her career after school and on the weekends, when she also sometimes attends events with her mum. Homework is prioritised when she gets home from school, and only after that does she edit YouTube videos or films or learns a speech. It can be overwhelming and stressful and has impacted her as a student. Compared to most of her peers she really understands work ethic and works hard in order to succeed. Some students see school and education as a place where hard work isn’t necessary. Being different from other students in her attitude and work can isolate her sometimes but luckily she has found people who accept her for who she is. Vanessa knows that being organised and keeping on top of things in order to fit school and speaking engagements in is hugely important. If Vanessa speaks at an event that’s on a weekday, she is granted permission from school. inspiringvanessa.com Achievement Award 2019

CATFISHED

ost cat owners fear their moggies being squished by a car. When you live on a boat by Kingston Bridge, there’s a different kind of angst. Minsky, our worshipped fur baby, falling into the Thames, to later bob up as a lifeless piece of drowned carpet following a raft ride through Teddington Lock. True, he often acts like a lifeless piece of carpet so not sure I’d actually notice much difference, but the reality is always there. Three months into our new home, the dreaded dunking finally happened. He was picking regular fights with another cat on the mooring, a big bruiser called Bill. First we heard the skittering of multiple paws above our heads, magnified terrifyingly by our steel deck. My daughter Talor raced upstairs to break up the Fight Club. But by the time we’d reached the door we heard the ominous SPLASH. Two actually. Both fell in together. Bill, being a streetwise panther, magically

twisted in mid air, and was back out the second his toe-beans touched the icy water. Our pampered pedigree, however, was left howling hideously in the river, sandwiched 8 steep feet down between the tiny channel between our boat and the one

life raft. It was midnight in mid winter, and pitch black. So, there I was, climbing 8ft into the freezing Thames in in my pyjamas, envisioning the headlines in the papers; ‘Foolish Woman Drowns Saving Her Pussy. Cat Survives’. Suze held my daughter, who held tight to the ladder. The cat, naturally, held tight to the raft. Finally wrenching him off, he suctioned desperately to my face like the Alien, inconveniently forgetting to withdraw his claws first.

next door. Too narrow a space to get a net down we screamed encouragement at him to keep swimming. His only hope was to make like Michael Phelps around the bow to a makeshift pallet Geordie and Suze, (our neighbours) had thrown together to deal with such an occasion. They came running out from their craft holding a ladder just as Minsky scrambled onto the

Once prised off me, he looked like the rejected love child of Minsky The Sphinx and ET. His fur sodden and flat, along with all his dignity. For once in his spoilt little life, the smile was temporarily wiped off his superior fluffy face. Along with a considerable amount of my blood. To comfort, Talor passed me a hot toddy singing ‘What shall we do with the Drunken Sailor?’ With spring tides coming, how about moving her to a penthouse flat? russellartist.com

HEADER MENTAL HEALTH

on the couch with

Dr De-Stress How are you doing with your resolutions of positive actions, a new mindset, a new you?

Have your good intentions fallen by the wayside? It’s never too late to start again. Read on - how you too are guaranteed to succeed. Clare really wanted to start going to an evening yoga class. With a good plan she could manage her toddler’s bedtime routine and still get to yoga on time. Three months down the line and she has been only once. Heather loved the idea of a morning meditation. She set her alarm early to do her practice. Three months on and she’s managed it about once a week. Karen decided to lose weight by cutting out chocolate, sweets and desserts. So far, she has lost one pound in three months. All three women went through the same process. They decided to make a change that would support their health and well-being. They considered what was possible and doable.

But why didn’t it go according to plan?

They all fell for that sneaky little obstacle, which I call renegotiation. The moment they needed to take action, an internal dialogue started. Thoughts such as ‘I don’t think I will make it’, ‘I am really tired, why don’t I do it next time’, ‘I am hungry now and I could have this cake as a lunch’ popped up. Do you recognise this process? Renegotiation is likely to work against you and takes up mental space and energy, leading to a negative outcome of frustration and disappointment.

What can you do to stop re-negotiating?

1. Think through what you want to change, make a decision for an action that is doable and be absolutely clear about the benefits 2. Plan your action, prepare for it and don’t make the timings a challenge as that will easily seduce you into renegotiation 3. When the moment arrives to execute your action, don’t indulge in any second thoughts. Just do it! 4. Feel the satisfaction and be proud of yourself
