Editorial We have been hearing about IP Broadcast for a lot time ago now, but little we’ve heard about AIMS (Alliance for IP Media Solutions) that this year debuts at NAB with its own booth, created to bring IP solutions that offer complete interoperability to this market. Among its members we find several of the biggest manufacturers and developers of broadcast and IT market, however several companies are being missed today. The AIMS roadmap for IP in the broadcast industry says that it is critical to follow a standards-based approach that outlines a clear roadmap that both meets the needs of implementations today and presents a clear path to greater functionality in the future. AIMS endorses an IP roadmap that includes SMPTE 2022-6, “the most widely implemented standard in the industry”, and AES67 for audio over IP. And also two recommendations: VSF TR-04, that prescribes the use of SMPTE 2022-6 for video and AES-67 for audio, and VSF TR-03 - A technical recommendation that simplifies production and virtualization using IP. So if we want work on IP, let us join AIMS.

Vatican’s Pontifical University Selects Blackmagic Studio Cameras for Ultra HD Training Facility students when they walk into the studio and realize that they will be able to get hands on with professional grade equipment. But it was just as important that the cameras were user friendly and easy to get to grips with, and the studio cameras from Blackmagic provide the perfect balance.” The cameras can either be controlled by camera operators, or when working in a smaller team, through the ATEM Camera Control software, which provides CCU like camera control.
Blackmagic Design announced that the Vatican’s Pontificia Università della Santa Croce, which trains the next generation of Catholic priests and leaders of the Church Communication Office, has equipped its dedicated studio facilities with a full multicam production workflow, featuring the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. Forming the hub of the University’s School of Church Communications, it is designed to help students understand every aspect of broadcast production. “The university established a media and communication training faculty in 1996 to complement the existing theological and philosophical curriculum, however it became clear to us that students shouldn’t just learn about presenting in front of camera, but to also have the ability to produce a broadcast

themselves,” explains Jorge Milan, associate professor of audiovisual communications at Pontificia Università della Santa Croce. The production facilities have been designed to be extremely flexible, not only to enable all students to gain practical hands on experience in all aspects of production, but also to work with a variety of programming, from a news broadcast to documentary shoots and through to prerecorded OB reports. The University is using three Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K for acquisition and programs are cut on an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K, delivered by reseller Cherubini. “Finding studio quality cameras that would appeal to students beginning to develop their production skills was crucial,” explains Jorge. “It’s wonderful to see the faces of the first year
Signal distribution throughout the studio and post production facilities are managed with a Smart Videohub 20x20 while a MultiView 16 provides monitoring of all incoming and outgoing feeds for the students gaining experience in the production gallery. “Previously we had used rented or second hand equipment but as our student numbers grew, we decided to invest in a Blackmagic Ultra HD workflow to ensure our facilities are future proofed, and are capable of producing impressive results.” “Everyone gets the opportunity to experience all aspects of television production, which we believe is a fundamental part of our communications program,” Jorge concludes. “These students will become the future spokespeople for the Catholic Church, and so if they understand not only how to present in front of the camera, but also what a production team needs for interesting and watchable content, that will help to spread the Church’s message far and wide.”

TMBi - 16
suite of management tools provides additional benefits to allow remote configuration patching, port protection, alias files, virtual patchbays and access rights. This is an especially useful feature in remote environments where multiple trucks are connected as it means that different units can operate across multiple formats in the field. Andreas Hildebrand, RAVENNA Evangelist at ALC NetworX, developers of the RAVENNA highperformance media-over-IP networking technology, welcomes the development from Calrec: “We’re delighted to see another major console manufacturer implementing RAVENNA as a basis for AES67 interoperability. RAVENNA is an excellent vehicle to bridge from an internal high performance network – in this instance, Hydra2 – to a wider, external network whilst still
maintaining all the high performance capabilities required by demanding broadcast applications such as ultra-low latency, high channel capacity and full bit-transparent operation. Implementations are available from various RAVENNA OEM module suppliers, or the technology can be natively implemented into platforms with sufficient performance characteristics.” According to Dave Letson, VP of Sales at Calrec, “It is imperative that Calrec supports RAVENNA and AES67 as they are popular options for broadcasters seeking an AoIP solution. Naturally, we want to support our customers’ working methods so we have developed this solution to provide another option that can be chosen with confidence to be fully integrable with Calrec’s consoles.”

Affinis Advisory Group Merges with MediAnswers The transition to software-defined workflows touches nearly every organization in the broadcast and media industry today, from manufacturers and trade associations, to ad agencies and television networks. To address this industry-wide challenge, broadcast and media industry visionaries Chris Lennon and Glen Sakata have joined forces as MediAnswers, a global company that focuses on media management and workflow optimization. Lennon formed MediAnswers in 2013 to help organizations manage large pools of media assets, and spearhead standardization projects to automate workflows from program acquisition through playout. Sakata has merged his consulting firm, the Affinis Advisory Group, with MediAnswers to more effectively drive these transitions from a higher level across sales, marketing and product management. He additionally brings a rare expertise in helping hardware manufacturers refocus their energies toward adapting to software-defined workflows, as broadcasters and media organizations worldwide begin migrating more operations to IP and the cloud. Sakata will serve as MediaAnswers’ Vice President.
Chris Lennon
TMBi - 18
“This is an important step in broadening our approach to the ever-changing media business,” said Lennon, MediAnswers President and CEO. “Affinis has a history of offering top-notch analysis of markets, products, strategy and sales development. Couple this with our media systems integration, standards development, custom software development, education and consulting services, and our customers have an industry leader that can more comprehensively drive new strategies, initiatives and transformations that propel them forward.” Prior to forming Affinis Advisory Group, Sakata held influential positions at Vinten, Louth Automation and Harmonic. At Harmonic, he led the company’s EMEA division through a business transformation that paved the foundation for its recent international success. While at Louth Automation he began working with Lennon, then with Enterprise Systems Group, to establish tighter interoperability between automation and traffic systems. Both companies were later acquired by Harris Corporation, where Lennon evolved this initiative into standardization work around BXF
(Broadcast eXchange Format). Today, BXF eliminates manual data entry processes for ad ingestion into traffic systems in favor of automated, XML-based file transport. Lennon has continued driving similar standardization work at MediAnswers with organizations like CIMM (Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement) and NABA (North American Broadcasters Association), driving softwaredefined workflows across audience measurement and automated exchange of file delivery specifications. Sakata’s diverse skillset complements both Lennon and his MediAnswers colleague Peter Storer, another industry veteran who specializes in media software systems. The company’s growing roster also now includes sales executive Paul McNeill, well-known to broadcasters and cable networks alike. “After two decades working closely with Chris on a variety of end user projects, standardization initiatives and partner relationships, a synchronicity of sorts found us launching Affinis and MediAnswers at the same time,” said Sakata. “While focused on different technology areas, we continually found the two firms meeting in the middle—often with the same customers—driven by the same evolving business dynamics found across the broadcast, media and entertainment industries. Combining the diverse skills and expertise of both companies to better address the needs and challenges of our growing client base across front-end acquisition, business process management, content delivery and more instantly became apparent. It’s an ideal meshing of talent to help a diverse range of players from the manufacturer to the media network.”

TSF uses the VideomentheCloud platform to transfer its files during filming in Montpellier Videomenthe announced that TSF, the supplier of film footage to cinema, broadcast and advertising professionals, has used the VideomentheCloud collaborative media content sharing platform during the shooting of a film pilot in Montpellier (South of France). Used mainly to transfer the footage to post-production in Paris, VideomentheCloud permitted the secure, encrypted, expedited transfer of the files during the fortnight of filming, facilitating the work of the teams in Montpellier and Paris. “The VideomentheCloud platform is an intuitive tool that is simple to use”, says Danys Bruyère, TSF’s Deputy Director for Operations and Technology. “As well as solving the issues of mobility and reducing our infrastructures, this sharing platform gave us thorough control over all of our content during filming, providing complete visibility and traceability and avoiding any loss of files or wasted time. Most of the file transfers were of film footage, so it was crucial not just to preserve quality, but also to save time in the post-production phase, by ensuring the rapid availability of the files. So Videomenthe was able to offer us a reliable solution in step with these
TMBi - 20
needs, in the form of its VideomentheCloud platform”. VideomentheCloud, based on the proven MediaShuttle tm system from Signiant, allows users to share content rapidly and securely in a restricted-access storage area provided by Videomenthe. Upstream, the system administrator carries out a simple configuration to customise the interface and establish the access rights: selection of group members, their rights and the method of identification (using a login or SAML2.0 gateway). The user then connects to the portal and ingests files to the platform to make them available. This content can then be downloaded or can equally well either be stored or purged, according to need. This ease of deployment allowed the TSF film crew to transfer a large number of files (an average daily volume of 850GB) to postproduction, helping to improve the productivity of the operation. In fact, TSF’s use of the VideomentheCloud platform is a typical example of the current needs of film crews, who have to transfer footage to distant postproduction facilities rapidly and cost effectively. More generally, this
also applies to broadcast professions as a whole: digitisation is becoming essential and generates a large increase in the number of files needing to be processed. “With VideomentheCloud we are also offering great flexibility: our clients are free to choose how long they want to commit to, allowing them to benefit from a very attractive price for optimal use of the platform. TSF is a perfect example of this, making ad hoc use of VideomentheCloud to transfer its files during filming in Montpellier. By providing this solution to the Parisbased company, Videomenthe has demonstrated its ability to update this type of operation and to simplify its clients’ work for them, Videomenthe Sales Manager Eric Schaffner explains. “We are keen to be able to collaborate with TSF again in the future and so to be involved in this way in the development of French broadcast productions,” he added. The software publisher and distributor also enables the processing of media files (transcoding, QC, loudness...) as well as making them available in its Cloud via its Eolementhe© portal.

NewTek Ships Network Device Interface (NDI™) for IP Production Workflows
NewTek™ has launched Network Device Interface (NDI™), an enabling technology for live production IP workflows over Ethernet networks. NDI is available now as a royalty-free software development kit (SDK) for anyone wanting to enable IP workflows in their facilities, or in production devices and systems they manufacture. In addition to more than 200 developers working with NewTek on IP product integrations, NDI is also backwards compatible with a large number of devices from top manufacturers and developers already using NewTek’s previous technology allowing IP connectivity between devices. This will extend support for NDI to well over 100,000 compatible systems already deployed worldwide, making it by far the most prolific IP video transfer method in the production market. This number is expected to grow substantially as more products become available from more than 200 companies that have signed on as NDI developers. NDI is an end-to-end solution with broad industry support. NewTek is also offering a suite of free NDI software tools designed to leverage
TMBi - 26
the unique capabilities made possible by NDI and IP-based workflows. NDI allows multiple video systems to identify and communicate with one another over IP, and to encode, transmit and receive many streams of high quality, low latency, frame-accurate video and audio in real time. This benefits any network-connected video device, including video mixers, graphics systems, capture cards, and many other production devices. This makes it possible to exponentially increase the number of sources available for live production switching, without directly attaching to devices, changing locations, or investing in expensive, high-bandwidth networks that simply replace SDIbased workflows. “Our mission at NewTek has always been to make it easy for anyone to produce a great show. That’s why we created NDI, to provide the industry a toolset for building the next generation of live production solutions that innovate and change the way we work. We have made NDI accessible to
everyone by making it easy to use, free of charge and built to work on existing networking technology,” said Dr. Andrew Cross, NewTek’s president and CTO. “Since we demonstrated NDI at IBC 2015, and released beta versions of the SDK for developers, the response from third party manufacturers has exceeded our highest expectations. NDI works with applications from almost every major vendor and virtually every I/O card on the market. There is no doubt that this move to IP-based production is fundamentally transforming our industry.” NDI’s superb performance over standard GigE networks makes it possible to transition facilities to an incredibly versatile IP video production pipeline without negating existing investments in SDI cameras and infrastructure, or costly new high-speed network infrastructures. Typically, SDI systems and other IP workflows that utilise point-topoint network connections are heavily dependent on expensive high-speed infrastructures. In contrast, NDI is a bi-directional
APR
PA N S H O T
standard that can operate over a GigE local area network, with many video streams on a shared connection. The way that we transport video over the network is entirely resolution and frame-rate independent, supporting 4K (and beyond) along with 16 channels (and more) of floating-point audio, making it powerful today and ready for any technology in the future. The protocol also includes tools that implement video access grouping, bi-direction metadata, tally support and IP commands.
Game Changing Benefits Unlike expensive, dual-10Gbps Ethernet networks typical of emerging IP workflows, a standard GigE LAN infrastructure can accommodate NewTek’s efficient, multi-source live IP video switching. NewTek’s experience and expertise
2016
in developing IT-based multicamera production systems provides far-reaching and immediate benefits. Not only does it drastically reduce initial network infrastructure investment, NDIenabled IP workflows can also:
- Minimise network component costs
- Deliver 10x increase in capacity of video signals in an IP infrastructure vs. SDI
- Eliminate concerns about the limited number of physical inputs on a switcher when an additional live video source is needed–just find a network connection on the LAN to plug it into
- Natively encode video of any resolution or format with pristine quality virtually indiscernible from the signal viewed directly from the camera - Enable low-latency, multi-channel frame-accurate video streams, with or without alpha channel, with no buffering - Simplify IT configuration, relieve MIS burden, avoid common IP configuration issues

TNDV Plays Pivotal Role in Multi-Camera HD Production of The 31st Annual Stellar Awards Executive in Charge of Production, Central City Productions, in Chicago. TNDV built a relationship of trust with CCP over the past 13 years by making small contributions to prior Stellar Awards—such as providing support trucks, equipment rentals, and help with streaming media— culminating this year with responsibility for the technical production and broadcast truck.
The 31st Annual Stellar Awards— held Saturday, February 20, 2016 at The Arena in the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada—showcased the top stars, performances and achievements in Gospel Music. Long a contributor to the award show’s live productions, TNDV this year saw its role significantly expanded by the show’s long-time producers, Chicago-based Central City Productions, Inc. (CCP), which put the HD mobile production leader in charge of all technical production management among other tasks. TNDV’s current flagship 40-foot HDTV truck Aspiration made the cross-country trek from Nashville to downtown Las Vegas, where the two-hour show was recorded live onto the truck’s 14 Aja Ki-Pro recorders. CCP delivered the show on hard drives in time for its March 6th premiere on TV One—an American digital cable and satellite television network—and is to be followed by subsequent showings on Bounce TV and syndicated TV stations nationwide.

“This event is aptly named because it’s considered Gospel Music’s biggest night,” said Nic Dugger, President of TNDV, who served as the show’s technical manager. “This is also CCP’s biggest show of the year, utilizing 11 cameras instead of the five to seven typically used for similar staged musical events.” As part of its technical production management responsibilities, TNDV hired key crew members, operated the overall video and audio architecture, and designed and integrated key AV equipment in the pressroom. TNDV also deployed a communications systems and large multiviewer displays throughout the facility to ensure all crewmembers could share the same visual and audio cues. “We chose TNDV because of their expertise, their problem solving skills, trustworthiness, and, most importantly, the positive, getit-done attitude their entire team brings to TV and event production,” said Jennifer J. Jackson,
Designed with an expanding side, Aspiration’s interior can be customized to fit the production’s needs. It’s equipped with 12 Hitachi SK-HD1000 broadcast cameras (with 11 used for this shoot) paired with an array of Fujinon HD lenses, a Sony MVS8000 production switcher, an integrated Imagine Communications router supporting a multi-definition monitor wall, a large RTS Adam matrix intercom system, and a Soundcraft Vi4 96input digital audio console in the audio booth. “Next year, CCP is planning to bring back the live band, and if so, they’ll need a much larger truck. And, we’ll be ready with our latest and greatest truck, Exclamation,” Dugger said. “So the timing has just been perfect.” When finished, Exclamation will have one of the largest footprints of any single mobile unit available. With seating for 30 people, this ergonomically designed 53-foot double-expando trailer will accommodate 4K production, high-end audio mixing, and other capabilities required by the most demanding shows. “TNDV went above and beyond as always,” said Jackson, “They did an exceptional job keeping our show on time and on budget, and reliably managing all aspects of our television production.”

MDR goes IP: Lawo mc² infrastructure delivers exciting stories from the radio drama SCR in Halle/Germany German public broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) maintains a mix of excitement, entertainment and information in its radio dramas and features, which range from children's programs to adult thrillers. These elaborate productions rely on good radio drama and a qualified, dedicated team, and also the facilities equipped with modern, highperformance technology. For its main programming, MDR uses its radio drama complex in Halle, Germany. In the MDR Studio Control Room,
a Lawo mc²66 recently replaced an mc²82 audio mixer after it had operated efficiently and reliably for 13 years. To meet anticipated future demands of radio drama production, the broadcaster decided on a new mixing console and the renewal of its audio infrastructure. Besides the mc²66 – a 56-fader console with 192 DSP channels and integrated plug-in server – the installation includes a 5kx5k Lawo Nova73 for audio routing, with talkback by a Lawo sapphire card. Three DALLIS units provide flexible and cost-efficient
mobile stageboxes that serve the entire drama production complex. The most significant change, however, is the future-facing adoption of an IP infrastructure based on RAVENNA. Dismantling the old gear, setting up the new equipment, and the overall system installation was carried out by MDR’s subsidiary, DREFA MEDIA SERVICE GmbH/Audio System Service, while planning and project management was undertaken by MDR Operation Management/Planning Media Production.

As a new member, we are among professionals where technical issues might be collectively shared, promoting a huge benefit in open standards, compatibility, and the standardization of media over IP for our customers.” Net Insight AB in Hägersten, Sweden, is a specialist in lossless video transport, from stadiums, studios and live events all over the world. The company’s Nimbra platform has evolved to become the leading media transport platform for live, high-quality video transportation. It is at the core of many of the world’s largest broadcasters’ and network service providers’ video transportation operations. Speaking to the company’s decision to join the alliance, Martin
TMBi - 30
Karlsson, CTO & vice president, product portfolio, said. “Today we are actively working with our customers on their transition from SDI to IP, and share the view of AIMS, that open and interoperable standards are crucial for this technology shift. We see great value in broad industry collaboration and are already members of VSF, SMPTE, MEF and ETSI. We believe that AIMS will be a key driver in the transition to IP, and we look forward to collaborating with the other members of the alliance.” Salt Lake City based Utah Scientific is an industry leader in routing switchers and technology for TV stations worldwide. Development firsts included the first large scale digital router, multiformat routing, integrated A/D and D/A conversions on inputs and outputs, integrated fiber optic conversion, and 300-Mb switching capability on all its digital routers since 1992. Tom Harmon, president and CEO, says, “I believe it’s very important that our industry moves toward a standardized approach to implementing the transition to IP in the broadcast market. That's why it's with great enthusiasm that Utah Scientific has embraced the AIMS initiative. Joining AIMS is really a commitment to our customers – to ensure they will have a seamless transition, with solutions that are interoperable as they move into the future of IP operations.” AIMS’ efforts are focused on promoting the adoption, standardization, development and refinement of open protocols for media over IP, with an initial emphasis on VSF TR-03 and TR04, SMPTE 2022-6 and AES67. Broadcasters and other media companies are seeking to leverage IP to increase the flexibility of their
networks, help streamline workflows and improve agility to better compete in a rapidly evolving ecosystem. Open standards are the key to protecting current investments and ensuring long-term interoperability. Open standards work for the IP transition is already underway by the 77-member Video Services Forum (VSF), with the support of organizations such as SMPTE and the EBU. AIMS endorses the work of the VSF and will continue to lend support in the development of a standard approach to IP; more than 30 broadcast equipment suppliers and broadcasters were involved in the development of VSF TR-03 and companies are actively testing and validating it today. AIMS provides specific guidance in its bylaws to its members and to the media industry via the AIMS Roadmap. The organization endorses an IP transition plan that includes support for SMPTE 20226, AES67 and VSF recommendations TR-03 and TR04. A number of solutions are already on the market to help media companies begin the transition by introducing IP components to an SDI workflow. The transition represents a significant investment and will not happen overnight. An open standards approach allows media companies to implement the technology over time and transition at the pace that makes sense for their businesses.

NHK chooses Nevion Flashlink for 8K Super Bowl transmission Nevion has announced its Flashlink DWDM optical transmitter was used by Japanese state broadcaster NHK in its 8K transmission of Super Bowl 50. The event was filmed by NHK using six 8K cameras around the stadium, which was part of a larger 8K outside broadcast (OB) unit. While the footage was not broadcast live over the air — it was only viewable in the compound at the stadium and at NHK headquarters — it was shown on 8 February at a public viewing at the broadcaster’s offices in Japan. Nevion’s distributor in Japan, Networks Electronics Japan, won the project with NHK and supplied the Flashlink system as it met the broadcasters’ stringent requirements. NHK needed a solution to ensure it could transmit the 8K or super-hi vision (SHV) signal in an uncompressed format and in real time. The 8K format needs eightchannel 3GHD-SDI or a 16-channel HD-SDI cabling to transmit the uncompressed baseband signals. The Flashlink optical fiber
distribution and signal processing system was used in the OB unit as it ensures transmission is clear and error free. In addition, with Flashlink, the signal can also be extended over great distances, which is especially important for live transmissions.
“This is a really exciting experiment in 8K broadcasting and Nevion is delighted to be a part of that in some way. We’re looking forward to Rio later in the year to see how this develops,” says Geir Bryn-Jensen, CEO, Nevion.

Seneca and Navori Labs Align to Simplify Digital Signage Deployments Swiss digital signage software specialist Navori Labs and Seneca, an Arrow Electronics company, have entered into a non-exclusive partnership to bundle reliable, highquality hardware and software solutions for digital signage networks. The alliance teams Seneca’s purpose-built media players with Navori Labs’ QL digital signage engine, with the intention of minimizing costs and labor for systems integrators; and simplifying ease of use of network operators. Navori Labs’ QL digital signage engine is known for its outstanding quality (supporting 4K resolutions and beyond), high reliability, quick learning curve and infinite scalability. The latter benefit is significant to the partnership, given the opportunities to bundle complete solutions for wide-scale, multi-site network deployments – notably in retail, transit, corporate, education and hospitality. However, Seneca’s flexible media player options will support a variety of installations, from single-player to single-screen delivery; to multioutput architectures in support of dynamic video walls. To accelerate deployments, Seneca will pre-install QL Professional or QL Express software on its media players, allowing integrators to focus on hardware installation. Customers will have the option to self-host the QL software – used for content creation and management – or leverage Navori Labs’ cloud hosting options to outsource system maintenance and management. The latter offers customers a true software-as-a-service (SaaS) operation that further reduces total cost of ownership for the end user. And whether deployed on-premises or in the cloud, QL’s intuitive user interface offers a quick learning curve and ongoing ease of use for operators of any experience level.
TMBi - 34
“Seneca has always valued purpose-built engineering and validated testing over repacked offthe-shelf solutions, which ensures better quality and a longer lifecycle for our digital signage customers,” said Jami McGraw, product manager, visual media for Seneca. “Navori Labs matches our dexterity and high performance when it comes to software innovation, making this partnership the perfect recipe for integrators and end users alike. Additionally, Navori Labs’ global presence and strong customer base opens many new opportunities for our bundled solutions.” The turnkey systems will additionally build Seneca media player and Navori Labs QL software licenses into each bundled solution, eliminating unexpected costs and configurations for customers upon deployment. Systems integrators will also benefit from a wide variety
of Seneca accessories to support challenging installations, including player mounting systems and internal power supplies that reduce the amount of visible components. “Navori Labs’ QL digital signage engine powers some of today’s largest digital signage networks, including a 20,000 media player deployment that recently went live in an international taxi cab network,” said Jerome Moeri, CEO, Navori Labs. “We share Seneca’s excitement in bringing a new bundled solution option to our respective customers that provides the consistency, reliability, quality and growth opportunities they deserve.” Navori Labs will exhibit its nextgeneration QL digital signage engine with Seneca media players, at the Digital Signage Expo, taking place March 16-17 at Las Vegas Convention Center. Navori Labs will exhibit at Booth 2118.

German broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk centralizes its ingest operations with mxfSPEEDRAIL MOG Technologies announced that Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), the public broadcaster in Germany has selected mxfSPEEDRAIL to unify its production workflow environment. As a member of the ARD group of broadcasters and responsible for the entire state of Hessen which includes Frankfurt, home to the ECB, and one of the major financial centers of Europe, HR production challenges don’t differ from most worldwide broadcasters and production houses and include the need to: - Save time and resources; - Free up both operational and editing teams allowing them to focus on more important tasks than ingest; - Automate tasks and unify the production environment into a standard HD format. For HR, MOG has deployed a file-based system based on the mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 model, that enables the management and control of all the ingest operations
via the intuitive user interface. The solution has been designed to ingest all the broadcasters input formats such as Panasonic P2, Sony XDCAM, Canon and GoPro, transcoding them into AVC-Intra 100 format – the standard HD format at HR – and transfers the assets into the production environment. With there being several studios across the Hessen region, HR uses the mxfSPEEDRAIL to ingest footage into the AVID Interplay/ISIS environment at its Frankfurt headquarters. Besides simplifying the footage delivery with Interplay check-in, mxfSPEEDRAIL enables the broadcaster to transport and annotate all the metadata, making it
simple to track all of the assets. The mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 automatically generates the clip and sequence naming within the Interplay platform, and is based on the metadata present in the various sources. When necessary the folder/storage locations can also be defined automatically without the need for an operator to perform these tasks. HR’s deployment was made with Media Online consultancy and technical support. As a corporate partner, Media Online has been working with MOG for 6 years, approaching the German market and delivering the most innovative ingest capabilities.

Connecting Sport Relief fundraisers on the high seas to the BBC One Show using RazorLink® technology Six celebrities joined an experienced team of Volvo Ocean Race veterans to sail from Belfast to raise money for Sport Relief. The on-board reporters used the media centre to tell the story. The addition of newly launched RazorLink® technology from Livewire Digital enabled network acceleration, traffic prioritisation and bonding of satellite and cellular services. VOR65 yachts are designed for speed not comfort, and sailors and equipment alike must be capable of taking a 24 by 7 pounding. The onboard equipment needs to survive the physical battering as well as the corrosive nature of salt water. Couple this with a working environment that is noisy, cold, cramped, damp and moves in three dimensions and it is easy to see why it is named the “broadcast studio from hell”. Two highly experienced “on board reporters” (OBR’S) Matt Knighton and Sam Greenfield were tasked with making sure that all angles were covered. All equipment, including the four 1080i custom waterproof HD cameras and waterproof microphones, are powered from the yacht’s 24V DC battery bank; the media workflows have to be simple and always come with a backup plan. The communication system is key and can make use of all available links. This means using cellular when close to shore combined with satellite links when in isolated waters. Not just for media, the communications system is also used for downloading weather files, delivering real time telemetry and providing Internet access for the crew and celebrities. Access to the Internet is through the “services” shown on the right hand side; two Inmarsat Fleet Broadband satellite terminals and four cellular modems. The yacht side network has a wired
TMBi - 36
LAN and a wireless access point mounted on the stern of the yacht. The “Network Controller” in combination with “RazorLink” manages the “services”. The Network Controller is responsible for establishing the appropriate satellite connections and managing the different types of traffic generated on board. RazorLink “bonds” the satellite terminals and cellular services, making more bandwidth available to the on-board systems. In addition it accelerates data transfer by overcoming the inherent issues of satellite delay and cellular packet loss. This allows on-board systems to optimise use of the available bandwidth. When the yacht is within cellular coverage data rates in excess of 40Mbps were available. As cellular coverage drops off, the Inmarsat services transparently become the main stay, RazorLink bonds the data services of both the FB250 and FB500 satellite terminals, providing in excess of 500Kbps to the onboard systems from virtually anywhere in the world. The Inmarsat terminals offer telephone and a range of data services. The Media Station makes use the “background” data service for general file transfer and Internet access, and the “streaming services” for Live video feeds. The streaming service guarantees a particular Quality of Service (QoS) and bit rate. For the Sport Relief challenge, Inmarsat made changes to the satellite network to allow the FB500 terminal to establish 384Kbps streaming connections. Previously, the fastest Fleet Broadband streaming service was 256Kbps, so another “first” providing higher quality live feeds. The on-board system was configured to deliver both Live and
File based media to the BBC’s RazorLink enabled M-Link server. File based media was encoded as H.264AVC at 4Mbps, a good compromise between quality and the transmission rates of the Fleet Broadband terminals. Higher encoding rates were chosen when in good cellular coverage. Live feeds could be operated directly over the Inmarsat Fleet broadband services at up to 384Kbps, but where there was good cellular cover RazorLink allowed full HD profiles to be used that adapt to the network conditions. Operating media and satellite equipment on a racing yacht will always be very challenging and an important aspect is line of sight. The OBR could examine a 3D model of the yacht showing the line of sight to the satellite for each terminal in real time. The RazorLink enabled media system was used to great effect during the challenge; moments of high drama were captured using the delay line. Daily live interviews were conducted during the One Show throughout the week, these were complemented by store and forward footage that had been captured, edited and transmitted during the day.

RT Software tops the Brazilian football league for ESPN ESPN Brazil holds the rights for the Copa do Brasil, broadcasting live fixtures for audiences in the region, as well as the rights to National and State leagues’ highlights. The broadcaster recently won the live broadcast rights to the Spanish league La Liga in a new five year deal, in addition to being awarded a brand new three year deal for English Premier League exclusive rights, with coverage starting at the start of the 2016/7 season. RT Software has developed its tOG-Sports solution for the broadcaster to deliver enhanced on screen graphics and provide more in-depth performance statistics and positional data in its coverage. The tOG-Sports system is integrated with ESPN Brazil’s OPTA data feed to power the on screen presentation graphics before, during and after channel’s football matches. The broadcaster’s graphics licence was due for renewal last summer and ESPN Brazil sought the opportunity to look for a more innovative and cost effective solution. Mike Fredriksen, Commercial Director, RT Software said: “ESPN Brazil wanted to continue with its popular standard telestration graphics, which have featured in its coverage for several years, and include the capability of full screen graphics showing a range of heat maps, pass maps and touch maps. This required integrating to an external data source to get the information up on the screen as quickly as possible. “ESPN Brazil had already purchased data feed from OPTA, and we were able to provide the software to help deliver a stunning range of graphical insights.” The OPTA data is converted from HTML into an on screen graphic – achieved using a software module
TMBi - 42
from RT Software called tOG media watcher, which is capable of accepting incoming feeds such as RSS, XML. Fredriksen explains: “The process involves the tOG-Media Watcher capturing the live feed from OPTA and converting the data to send to tOG-Sports, which in turn converts it to a graphic. This is all transparent, ESPN Brazil now has an interface built by RT Software, where they can pull up a menu and look at the stats on the current game or data from a previous game from the database. If the channel wants to show an individual player’s heat map, they can simply press a button and tOG-Sports will put the information to air. The viewer will see a full graphic with a virtual stadium in the background.” The heat map element of the solution went live in October 2015, however another requirement from ESPN Brazil was for touch maps to plot the location of touches on the pitch, pass maps to show passes between two players and how two specific players can link up and also the routes to goal. These capabilities will go live on the
channel later this month. Fredriksen concluded: ““We developed new full screen graphics and an interface to push data to these graphics specifically for ESPN Brazil and we are delighted with the results. This installation is a perfect demonstration of how a cost effective and easy to use solution like tOG-Sports can still continue to push the boundaries of 3D telestration.” Ricardo Spinelli, ESPN Brazil said: “We selected RTSoftware to develop a new system that could integrate with Opta Sports and allow us to have football heat maps for the teams and players. Introducing the solution has really improved our content and storytelling and enabled us to deliver new and exclusive information to our viewers. Graphics form a vital part of our coverage, it means we can display clear and comprehensive to the audience, and from a marketing perspective it really strengthens our offering and takes ESPN technology to the next level.”

of March 28th, from the authorized Atomos reseller network. “HDR is simply amazing, it’s the next revolution for filmmaking, once again Atomos are first with the technical solution to make it quicker, easier and more affordable for filmmakers” said Atomos CEO and co-founder Jeromy Young, “Anyone that sees HDR, from content creators to consumers are immediately sold, more life like shots and real world detail. Our job is to open up HDR to all filmmakers by removing the technical and affordability hurdles that might slow its progress.” The Flame series of monitorrecorders are equipped with the AtomHDR engine, utilising the power of the 1500nit panel in tandem with Atomos’ patent pending image processing to resolve the brightness detail of Log camera signals with the color
accuracy of 10 bit HDR images mastered in post production. This means that the usual complications of exposing Log signals on a washed out image are eliminated – with AtomHDR you simply frame, expose, focus and shoot. All major camera makers log formats are supported - Sony, Canon, Panansonic, Arri, Red and JVC. The monitor itself is a calibrated 7” 1920x1200 325ppi IPS with upgraded 10-bit color accuracy, resolving 1.07 billion colors compared to the 16.7 million colors of traditional 8-bit panels. This all but eliminates the color banding seen on traditional panels and in tandem with AtomHDR lets you see images as you would with your own eyes. For existing SDR, Rec709 delivery or scenes that do not have the wide brightness variation required for HDR shooting, switch

Flexible SAT FTTH and FTTB Solution by WISI WISI Communications GmbH & Co. KG (WISI) introduces a brand new and comprehensive optical distribution system, the OL-series. Optically distributing digital satellite and terrestrial DTT, DAB and FM signals, is the future-proof solution for any size of network. Largescale structures with an unlimited number of subscribers can be supplied via fiber without incurring any signal or quality losses. Since fiber cabling can be installed much faster, optical signal distribution is also very efficient. Fiber cabling provides furthermore for space savings and comes at a more favourable price than comparable coaxial cable installations. Moreover, optical distribution systems are less sensitive to interference.
Optical distribution of SAT signals The optical distribution of SAT signals is based around a simple concept. An optical LNB converts the incoming signals into light waves right at the dish antenna. The following distribution uses preassembled monomode fiber optic cables and dedicated splitters. Connected optical converters change the light-wave signal back into the electrical satellite IF signal. Using quad converters, up to four receivers can be connected. Quattro converters can furthermore be used to set up a connection to a mutiswitch system.
OL-series offers a wide variety of components WISI’s new OL-series consists of numerous products that offer maximum flexibility to the operator of a reception system: optical LNBs, converters, switchblades, optical

splitters, monomode fiber cable for indoor and outdoor use, and additional components such as active splitters, N-connecting cables, adapters, optical measuring and power devices. The two LNBs with optical output, OL 11 0000 (up to 32 converters) and OL 12 0000 (up to 64 converters), convert the four SAT bands HH, VH, HL, VL into a single optical output signal that is then distributed via monomode fiber cables. WISI offers two quad converters, OL 21 0003 and OL 21 0002, and the quattro converter OL 22 0002, for conversion of optical signals into electrical satellite IF signals. Powering may be supplied by the customer’s connected set-top-box or, optionally, via the 20 V DC power supply (OLPS 0230). One quad converter can be connected to up to four receivers or TV sets with integrated DVBS/S2 tuners. Quattro converters are required if an additional distribution is required, via coaxial cable and multiswitches. WISI has a special package for operators of reception systems who would like to also feed in terrestrial DTT, DAB and FM channels. This
package consists of full band LNB OL 15 0000, electric-optical converter OL 14 0000 and the connection cable OL 82 0002. The OL 15 0000 LNB converts four SAT frequencies into one combined output signal to feed into the electric converter. The electric converter has one input for terrestrial feeds of DTT, DAB and FM signals and converts all received signals into optical signals. In addition, OL 14 0000 has two independent optical outputs for up to 64 converters. WISI’s OL-series also offers multiswitches in a space saving design with one direct input and 8 respectively 16 outputs. The two basic switchblades, OL 41 0008 (8 outputs) and OL 41 0016 (16 outputs), are powered by a 20 V DC power supply (included). For the two expansion switchblades, OL 42 0008 (8 outputs) and 42 0016 (16 outputs), power will be supplied by the base unit. The multiswitches can easily be cascaded and extended if required, by up to four satellites. For indoor use, WISI offers single mode optical cables with different lengths, ranging from 1 to 200 meters (OL 95 1001 to OL 95 1200). A special feature of the OLseries is an optical twin mode cable for outdoor use. This cable can be supplied in different lengths, ranging from 30 to 200 meters (OL 95 2030 to OL 95 2200). Additional components include different symmetrical and asymmetrical optical splitters, optical power meter OL 51 0000, the optical measurement receiver OL 55 00000, active 4-way splitter OL 72 0004 and additional connectors and spares are available.

Barco Silex C8530
Transition to IP with Open Standard VC-2 codec Text: Jean-Marie Cloquet, Video Product Manager at Barco Silex The broadcast contribution facilities are now moving away from SDI to the more flexible and scalable IP network. At the same time, the video experience will continue to improve through higher resolution, frame rate and color depth increasing the video bandwidth. The lightweight VC-2 HQ video compression (SMPTE 2042 standard) is the logical answer to reduce the infrastructure cost resulting from the uncompressed video bitrate. VC-2 HQ achieves a compression ratio up to 4 times without any compromise on the image quality. There are currently two ongoing trends regarding the IP transport. The first one is to directly map the SDI payload to networking packets according to the SMPTE 2022 standards. The second one, according to the VSF TR-03, consists in a simple encapsulation of each video/audio stream individually to RTP packets. The VC-2 codec has the advantage to be useable in both scenarios. The SMPTE 2022 mapping is directly supported by the existing SMPTE 2047 standard, while the VSF TR03 RTP mapping for VC-2 is already drafted in an RFC document proposed at IETF. The VC-2 video codec is a real opportunity for the broadcast market. It is an open standard ready for adoption. Anyone requiring lightweight compression in his product development has the
TMBi - 56
choice to either implement it himself or integrate one of the VC-2 libraries available on the market in order to get a faster time to market. The recently released open source implementation of VC-2 is a real-time software solution to encode or decode a video stream on a usual CPU based platform. This software library is directly downloadable from the collaborative Github website under the VC2HQEncode and VC2HQDecode projects. It didn’t take long before these libraries were integrated into the common FFmpeg package. To be complete, a GStreamer plugin is also available for the RTP mapping of the VC-2 codestream. VC-2 being an open standard provides many advantages to the broadcast market. It guarantees competitiveness of the available
solutions on the market and avoids arbitrary pricing. It will also reduce the chance of being locked to a specific vendor. The adoption of the VC-2 codec is made easy, as anyone can start developing a product at lower cost, or even implementing open source libraries. These advantages guarantee a safe long-term choice for VC-2 as a codec for the IP based transport in the broadcast market. For those looking for a more integrated solution, Barco Silex has announced the new Viper boards. The Viper boards enable 4K HDMI audio and video transport over IP network thanks to the VC-2 open standard. The Viper product is available as an OEM module that accelerates the prototyping and development of your own product. This is yet another option to start using the VC-2 codec.

Bluebell N4322
Bluebell Creates Compact, Versatile, End-to-End Link Between Camera and CCU One of the conundrums in outside broadcast operations is how to get signals and power back and forth between the remote camera and the CCU … easily, reliably, and affordably. The more distance between the camera and the CCU, the greater the challenge. The ideal solution is to use standard, single-mode, preinstalled fibre to create a round-trip link between the two. Whether connected to an OB truck using a venue’s fibre infrastructure, or connected to a central control room at a crosstown broadcast station through a city’s dark fibre network, an end-to-end fibre link offers broadcasters time- and moneysaving flexibility when deploying cameras at an event. For one thing, it gives OB crews the ability to mux multiple cameras and signals onto fewer fibres, which not only saves money in cable and time in rigging, but can be especially important when fibre cores are broken in an OB environment. It also means there is no need to put CCUs at the remote position, which affords much more flexibility in positioning the cameras wherever they would be most effective. Broadcasters can take that flexibility even further by using a complementary power-insertion solution, which makes it possible to transfer not only signals, but power, and frees crews to put cameras anywhere, regardless of the location of power sources. Very few companies offer such a
complete end- to- end link, and even fewer offer it in as compact a form and with as much versatility as Bluebell. Bluebell’s fibre interface cards are the building blocks for scalable networks of any size and degree of complexity. The cards are designed to mix with different Bluebell components, such as switches, splitters, and distribution amplifiers, while swappable SFP modules make it easy to accommodate various interfaces.
preinstalled fibre networks. By combining Bluebell’s Shax or ShaxX products with its BC Series cards, OB crews can connect multiple cameras and CCUs together over fibre. In this way, Bluebell offers a complete, end-toend fibre solution for getting signals from the camera to the CCU, with the flexibility to add to or reconfigure the system as needed for different applications.
Bluebell's BC Series cards are compact, rack-mountable multiformat converters that support an array of broadcast signals. Each card has functions ranging from distribution and format conversion to monitoring and wavelength management. Such a broad range of functionality enables flexibility in both system design and onsite reconfiguration. Users can mix and match Bluebell's multiformat converter cards with other Bluebell components to accommodate an almost unlimited number of scenarios. To complement the BC Series cards, Bluebell also offers the rugged Shax and ShaxX systems as replacements for bulky and distance-limiting SMPTE hybrid cables. These alternative connectors link broadcast cameras and CCUs over standard singlemode fibre. As a result, outside broadcasters can make better use of

Tired of sitting idle during a shooting? One simple step to increase productivity on set Everyone who has ever been on a movie set knows: at times, shootings can be agonizingly slow. With more and more projects shot digitally today, it is a blessing that the need for time-consuming changes of film reels anymore; however, there are still significant waiting times involved in every shoot – and certain processes that seem to drag on for hours. While a small number of people are frantically working to prepare the set, or adjust the lights, or fulfill any other important task, numerous people are sitting idle, waiting for a signal to set in motion again. Wouldn’t it be nice to use those waiting times more efficiently? Especially when shooting digitally, hence, the footage is stored on digital disks already, the director or the editors on set should be able to do more than just watch the assets. But until now they usually had to wait to actually do something with it till it was made available at the post-production facility. Today, thankfully all of this can change dramatically, and the procedures as described above are actually already a thing of the past. A savvy developer of advanced hardware and software technologies for the media&entertainment industry, Germany-based company ELEMENTS, has launched the latest generation of ELEMENTS CUBE, an ultra-portable media storage with up to 32TB in an ultra-small form factor chassis. Developed specifically for video professionals, as opposed to IT professionals, the new and improved ELEMENTS CUBE requires virtually no IT skills, neither regarding the initial setup nor the ongoing maintenance. As small and mobile as the yellow little CUBE is, it is a lot more than just portable highperformance storage though that supports SAS, SATA and even SSD drives. The comprehensive set of field-proven and fully intuitive workflow enhancement features and media asset management tools embedded in ELEMENTS CUBE simplify the transfer of the media assets to the central storage at the post-production facility. However, another truly unique feature make ELEMENTS CUBE really stand out from the crowd:

View, pre-select, cut – right away and directly on set The exclusive web-based media asset management, ELEMENTS Media Library, is accessible though ELEMENTS CUBE, allowing the director and the editor to view and preselect media assets on a HTML5 platform directly on set, using any standard computer or tablet. Interesting and meaningful features such as adding notes or comments to certain clips or even single frames, and even rating particular sequences significantly simplify the preselection process. With the Media Library even allowing for on-screen drawings, pointing out certain issues with an image just got a lot easier, as well. But it gets even better: the also embedded Rough-Cut editing tool, a vital part of the ELEMENTS’ Media Library package, enables the director or editor to create rough-cuts right on set! Again, using any standard MAC or PC, the easyto-use rough-cut editor allows for highest productivity by grating access to the media assets through the web-based fully intuitive GUI. “We don’t intend to replace professional editing applications,” says Kamps. “But when we learned from our customers that a quick rough-cut, conducted on-set, at the airport or even at home and with a real simple and intuitive tool that anyone can operate, would save them so much time and hassle, we got busy developing just exactly that.” he adds. By being fully compatible with virtually every professional editing application available today, including Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere, rough-cuts created in the Media Library can easily be transferred to any other editing application, while fully supporting Avid bin-locking and project sharing. Hence, projects started in the Media Library can easily be finished in any of the high-end editing applications, with even all comments, remarks and drawings added in the Media Library being fully visible and accessible in those professionals editing suites. The Media Library dramatically improves and streamlines workflow and approval processes during the editing stage of any project, increasing productivity in post-production and broadcast environments. Accessing the assets directly on the media storage via an HTML5 portal, the issue about data security and protection is well thought-out at ELEMENTS' solution: only accredited users, authorized through the embedded user and rights management tool, can access the project data. For those who want an extra layer of security, the system provides the option to create unique token-based access keys that only the dedicated team member can utilize. Gates Air N2512
Efficiency and Performance Gains for the Future RF Plant In anticipation of the TV spectrum repack and ATSC 3.0 in the United States and ongoing digital TV transitions internationally, GatesAir, is unveiling its next-generation solutions for the RF plant at the 2016 NAB Show. The demonstration will showcase advances in transmitter and exciter technology, as well as multichannel signal monitoring that help drive efficiency and performance in the RF plant to powerful new heights. GatesAir’s innovations in RF plant efficiency go back decades, but made an especially big leap with the integration of 50-volt LDMOS technology in its PowerSmart® transmitter architecture, introduced nearly 10 years ago. The company has continued to make annual advances in transmitter efficiency, with the latest big leap three years ago via PowerSmart 3D. Powered by true broadband amplification, PowerSmart 3D can increase AC to RF efficiencies for ATSC operations from nearly 30 percent to approximately 40 percent, and reduced power consumption by up to 50 percent. At NAB, GatesAir unveils PowerSmart Plus, the nextgeneration of GatesAir’s PowerSmart innovations. Designed for the green economy, PowerSmart Plus can raise AC to RF efficiencies up to industry-high levels of 50 percent ATSC. At this level, GatesAir Maxiva™ ULXT liquid-cooled and UAXT air-cooled TV UHF transmitters can operate

space-challenged RF plants. The market-leading efficiency gains of the high-power UAX-T design deliver 10.8 kW (UAXT-12) and 14.4 kW (UAXT-16) of pre-filter ATSC power to the broadcaster, outperforming the competition by more than 20 percent. “These two new UAXT configurations deliver marketleading transmitter efficiency with simplified maintenance and operation—all very significant benefits for broadcasters facing new challenges associated with channel relocation,” said Redmond. “These transmitters also integrate more advanced IP connectivity to help broadcasters more flexibly adapt to IP transport capabilities within advanced DTV standards like DVB-T2, ISDB-Tb, and looking forward, ATSC 3.0.” The new Maxiva UAXT-12 and UAXT-16 transmitters join a growing UAXT product line that offers six power levels from 1kW to 14kW for low-to-medium power needs. As with all Maxiva transmitters, the new UAXT models offer unparalleled modularity to simplify field maintenance with hotswappable power amplifiers and supplies, and minimize spare parts. defined Maxiva exciters, TV broadcasters now have the industry’s highest-efficiency, highest-performance over-the-air solution for today and tomorrow’s opportunities, including the nextgeneration ATSC 3.0 TV standard; and the continued embracing of DVB-T2 internationally.” Similar to the efficiency gains advances in liquid-cooled technology via its ULXT transmitter range introduced in 2015, this year GatesAir will debut the Maxiva UAXT-12 and UAXT-16, the newest members of its Maxiva™ UAXT high-efficiency, air-cooled UHF transmitter product family. The new transmitters extend the UAXT range, introduced in late 2014, to higher power levels not previously available in air-cooled transmitters.
This gives UHF broadcasters the improved power efficiency and greater modularity of GatesAir’s advanced PowerSmart® transmitter designs, including the thirdgeneration PowerSmart Plus architecture along with the simplicity of air-cooled operation. The UAXT with advanced PowerSmart designs provide the convenience of air cooling at higher power levels. This offers a clear operational value proposition for broadcasters unable to support liquid-cooling architectures for highpower TV due to the remote location of, or limited real estate within, the RF plant. With GatesAir’s broadband amplification at the core of the transmitters, broadcasters are assured a smaller footprint for cleaner installation in
Further boosting performance is Maxiva StreamAssure, a first-of-itskind QoS and QoE solution for the RF plant. Based on software from cloud monitoring visionary Qligent, StreamAssure gives broadcasters a way to visualize multiple transport layers and streams coming in and out of the transmitter, giving users a clear picture of signal quality and compliance from the time they leave the studio. Scalable from single transmitter deployments to large-scale, national over-the-air networks, StreamAssure is built to help RF engineers quickly identify and address the source of the problem, which more often than not originates outside the transmitter. The end benefit is improved visibility and quality control across the air chain.

JĂźnger Audio C2333
Smart Audio is the way forward for live broadcast production. Todays broadcast facilities are facing ever-increasing demands on their resources as they strive to keep up with consumers who expect more content, on more devices both where and when they want it. Amongst all the various elements broadcasters have to handle including video, graphics, data, captions and subtitles, the importance of audio should not be underestimated. To attract and retain viewers, consistent, stable and coherent audio is a vital requirement. One aspect that is particularly important to pay attention to is speech intelligibility. In todays file based environment, for content being recorded to be stored and subsequently broadcast at a later date, the task of creating good audio, especially dialog, involves many techniques. Appropriate
TMBi - 68
microphone choice and placement, post-production modifications and a myriad of software tools that can analyse and enhance faster than real time. In a live broadcast situation however, things are very different. Think about a breaking news story that needs to be on air as quickly as possible. There is simply no time to use all the techniques used for say a drama production. A feed from an outside broadcast needs to be combined with a local studio presenter and perhaps a correspondent reporter speaking from a remote studio. Audio levels cannot be assumed to be consistent with each other and may not be compliant with relevant loudness standards. To ensure that viewers receive a consistent and above all clear, audio experience, it is necessary to find a way of dealing with potential issues in a more efficient way and one that requires minimal intervention and manual control or operation.
The answer is to utilize real time processing algorithms that are both intelligent and adaptive. Devices need to be fully interoperable with others in the broadcast environment and need to seamlessly integrate with both playout automation systems and logging and monitoring processes. Automated leveling of individual sources to pre-condition the audio before final loudness based management combined with auto up-mix to maintain a constant surround experience. The use of adaptive EQ to ensure consistency of spectral balance and that all important speech intelligibility. The ability to interface with Audio Over IP networks just by plugging in a single cable. Now, bring all this together into a solution that requires just a minimal number of initial parameters to be set and then it just “works. That is Smart Audio.

ProTelevision Technologies SU8521
ATSC 3.0 At the NAB2016 Show ProTelevision Technologies from Denmark launches their new ATSC 3.0 exciters built-in their world recognized hardware platform PT3000. The ProTelevision Technologies exciter is characterized by its high RF and MER performance and its unique ability to optimize efficiency of any DTT amplifier using its patented OptiPower technology. “The OptiPower technology operating in thousands of installations worldwide has proven its worth and provided Broadcasters a reduction in OPEX cost due to the reduced power consumption” says Javier Verduch Golfe, Sales Manager for the Americas. “With the imminent introduction of the ATSC 3.0 standard in US and South Korea we recognize we have a unique value proposition for Broadcasters and transmitter manufacturers providing a cost effective product
based on our established software defined hardware platform”. A unique feature important to mention is the fully IP interface connectivity that the PT3000 platform offers. “When developing the PT3000 platform back in 2011, we predicted that TV technology was heading towards IP distribution. Therefore we developed a hardware platform with four (4) Gigabit IP ports; two of them we dedicate for IP content input and the other two for control and management. Supporting seamless switching on the IP ports and combined with the ASI inputs on SFN gives our customers a full IP redundancy and robustness in the transmitting signal which of course is a huge advantage and differs us technologically from the competitor’s products.” Protelevision Technologies plans for the upcoming NAB Show, Mr. Golfe declares “At the moment we can only disclose that even the ATSC 3.0 standard is not yet
completed due to the absence of fully defined STL interface format, ProTelevision Technologies has developed a proprietary solution in order to demonstrate an ATSC 3.0 modulated signal through our exciter. Therefore we are very excited after a long development and testing period that we are ready to demonstrate our ATSC 3.0 exciters during the NAB 2016 show.” ProTelevision Technologies, formerly Philips TV Test Equipment, has more than 50 years of experience and is represented in more than 60 countries around the world. With over 30.000 units in operation worldwide we are dedicated to provide our customers with superior, cutting edge hardware and software solutions for COFDM modulation. Provys N4330
The latest developments of PROVYS’s unique integrated software solutions for media will be on show this NAB, stand No. N4330, Las Vegas Convention Centre. PROVYS is an ideal solution for broadcasters who schedule and deliver programmes for one or more TV or radio channels. PROVYS optimises station workflows, improves management efficiency and facilitates information sharing among producers, channel managers, schedulers, media managers, air-time sellers, VOD publishers, and many others. The PROVYS team is going to present the latest experience with ongoing projects, which include: Non-linear services - enhancing efficiency of non-linear content planning - utilising content on various platforms - saving time with the new GUI for scheduling Production control via the web - booking the requested resources - verifying production plans and approving them - allowing production teams to check individual plans, to confirm them and to report completion Promotion campaigns - managing production of promotions - optimising campaigns and raising viewer ratings
TMBi - 76
- enhancing channel value with the PROVYS Promo Tool In addition to these new developments, the PROVYS’s new Broadcast Management Dashboard (BMD) will be on show, professionally built upon a standard Broadcast Management System (BMS). Although this is a back-office tool which can never be as fancy as some broadcast production technology, the influence on the health of any broadcast organisation is enormously positive. The Broadcast Management Dashboard collects data from the BMS and financial systems and visualises both current and historical outputs for managers to quickly get an overview as to how the organisation or its divisions perform and the reasons behind such performance. The BMD allows
individual managers to monitor important broadcast processes and using KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), to give accurate information of how the particular division is performing without the need for deep data analysis. KPIs provide a very efficient path for delivering critical information. In addition to that, the BMD lets users easily understand the reasons for performance from different perspectives and makes it straightforward for the management to react accordingly, and without delay. For the PROVYS team, it is with great pleasure to unveil the Broadcast Management Dashboard at NAB in Las Vegas. It is well known that throughout the last few centuries, the dashboard was an important part of every stagecoach. It protected coachmen from stones
NABSHOW 2016 PREVIEW
and dust thrown up by the carthorses’ hooves which now “dashed” against the board instead of the coachman’s legs. At the beginning of the 20th century, dashboards changed their face by incorporating meters and gauges. It took just a few decades for all modes of transport to follow suit with dashboards becoming standard equipment in aeroplanes, trains, boats and even spaceships. In the world of computers, virtual dashboards arrived quite soon after, bringing with them a clear and fast overview of any system status. Nowadays, these digital dashboards are exploited in many different industries including finance, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, etc. It is still relatively new in broadcasting and media. In the mid Nineties, PROVYS developed a few embryonic reporting screens upon the newly developed Broadcast Management System. Users often printed these reports and used them mainly for management information. In the meantime, the development of the
media industry gained much higher speed and immediate decisions are today crucial to survival in this increasingly competitive environment. This is why PROVYS decided to develop specialised Broadcast Management Dashboards for different areas of the media industry. There are just a few truly professional BMS systems available in the world today. The common attribute of these systems is the fact that they collate and master all metadata flowing through the organisation. In addition, they are mostly tightly connected to the financial systems. These are the main reasons why BMS systems hold all vitally important information for all media operations. It has now become natural to source the data either from the BMS database or independently, acting as Software as a Service (SaaS) which can data-mine from other generic BMS and financial applications. The newly designed dashboards precisely target specialised user groups of individual managers such as finance, chief executives,
producers, channel managers, schedulers, media managers, airtime sellers, self-promotion managers, archivists, VOD publishers, and their teams. Standard KPIs are accurately identified and embedded in a clear graphical form. For more demanding users and managers, the dashboards can be customised to fit their ever evolving requirements. Web interface for mobile devices is under development. Broadcast Management Dashboards by PROVYS bring an unprecedented advantage for broadcasters. They gather and present key business indicators for easier and much more competent management decisions. Gathering data from different corners of the media industry such as new nonlinear services, they can influence market share, advertising revenues and the ultimate financial results of the organisation. Broadcast Management Dashboard simply puts you in the driving seat.

MediaStor – A modern approach to storage and archiving If you are in the business of generating high volumes of digital assets, it is likely that you regularly consider how best to store your valuable files. Rather than utilising a single storage technology such as spinning disk, the key to efficiency may be to adopt a strategy involving a range of storage hardware organised by a high-powered file management system. Powered by Suitcase TV, MediaStor is now available from Screen Systems, the leading provider of subtitling creation and delivery solutions and other products used by media companies across the globe. MediaStor is a software defined storage platform that provides flexible options for scalable online, nearline and archive storage built on commodity IT hardware. At the heart of every MediaStor system is a virtual file system that utilises object based storage to provide a near infinitely scalable distributed storage platform whilst providing a familiar user experience using a traditional file/folder structure. MediaStor Archive Blade is transparently integrated as part of a MediaStor clustered storage platform. Total cost of ownership analysis shows the solution to be comparable to LTO with significantly lower maintenance requirements and the added benefit of near-online file access. Each MediaStor Archive Blade is connected via a dual 10Gb Ethernet link with all files first being held on RAID-based storage on a MediaStor cluster node. Each chassis is managed by MediaStor’s Archivist HSM software to ensure data is written in one continuous process with an optional mirrored disk in a separate chassis. The archive duplication can be done between the MAID array and a traditional LTO tape system, or
second copy disks can be removed from the blades and stored. MediaStor provides a fully integrated MAID solution that works seamlessly with RAID-based storage. Movement between the different tiers is hidden from users thanks to the embedded HSM functions provided by the Archivist software which runs on the MediaStor clustered storage platform. Media files can be migrated to this new lower cost storage platform and once there can be used in-situ without needing to be restored first. Modified files are automatically stored in RAID-based storage and will be re-archived to MAID if they continue to meet the archive criteria. The solution provides a hybrid model that allows higher cost, higher performance RAID-based storage to be used when it’s really needed and for all long-term archiving to make use of the lower-cost lower-power MAID architectures.

ounce of their creativity and innovative spirit into reality.” Ventuz has already been used for a wide variety of high-end broadcast projects during the last years, among them the augmented reality setup at the Nanjing Youth Olympics opening ceremony, where the entire sky was turned into a graphics spectacle for the TV audience. Also, Ventuz finds great popularity at game show productions all over the world, where media installations are bespoke and need to communicate with a number of data sources and hardware devices, such as timers, interactive screens, buzzers and the like.
User friendly design On its quest to make the operators’ life easier, Ventuz has first and foremost concentrated on enhancing usability. The new generation now features many modes of operation that are
standard to the graphics and 3D industry, such as a layer based 3D compositing editor, widely known blending modes and effects, a freeflight camera and a global animation timeline. Beaumont said: “We are sure that these changes will lower the entry threshold for newcomers from the 3D and broadcast realm alike.” When taking a look into the new release, it becomes obvious that the Ventuz development team has stayed true to its goal of creating a solution that is focused on high-end graphic design. Ventuz 5 features a new state-of-the-art material engine and editor to easily create complex materials that are fully optimized for real-time environments. A brand new render engine with HDR support and advanced lighting techniques allow not only for a more realistic look, but also make sure that performance never becomes an issue.

Integration made simple Designers will also benefit from a number of 3rd party integrations. For example, it is now possible to import entire Photoshop files including all layers and blending modes into Ventuz. Additionally, Ventuz has established a Live Link to Cinema 4D, which transfers any changes made to an object in
Cinema 4D directly into the corresponding Ventuz project. “Photoshop and Cinema 4D are the tools most commonly used alongside Ventuz”, explained Beaumont. “We wanted to give operators the opportunity to use all the tools they love in the most efficient way without having to sacrifice any functionalities.”
Partnerships What these changes mean for broadcasters will be shown at NAB 2016 in a number of proof of concept installations on the booth of Ventuz Technology as well as partner stands. Together with Molden Media, who are contributing their graphics control and playout solution M2Control, Ventuz will show live production graphics workflows for news, sports and shopping channels. M2Control also offers connections to database and automation systems, through which the two companies are able to display a complete live production workflow that is flexible and can be easily adapted to specific requirements. This same integration will be on display at the booth of Molden Media in a virtual studio setup together with Trackmen, who are providing fully automated camera tracking. “Virtual and augmented graphics have been a big topic during the last months”, said Beaumont. “We want to show networks that these installations can be easily implemented into any broadcast environment at a reasonable price point.”

the field; and present that data on a centralized Vision dashboard in the cloud. Benefits include a simple monthly fee, with installation and configuration achieved remotely in one day or less. Qligent’s Virtual Probes eliminate travel expenses and onsite commissioning, and since they are virtual they can quickly be relocated to a new server anywhere in the world. This provides a unique benefit for monitoring one-time events like sports and live special broadcasts, enabling users to rent a virtual server or cloud, and avoid the labor associated with setup and teardown. Other key scalability benefits added to Vision include: • Multi-Layer Stream monitoring: Each probe platform is selected to handle what the broadcaster needs instead of a one-size-fitsall approach. This allows for
incredibly cost-effective last-mile probes, even when RF Layer monitoring is required. • IT Integration: Vision’s flexible platform ensures any customer can adhere to in-house IT policies for security and access, with protocol support such as LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). Also included is IPbased stream capture with Wireshark equivalent recording to analyze the lowest levels of the stream, and capture data in a way IT professionals can leverage. • System Management: New rolebased access, group policies and remote probe configuration dramatically reduces time spent managing Vision deployments of any size. This software-defined approach simplifies system widemanagement, and becomes incrementally more powerful as the monitoring footprint scales.

TEST AREA
THE PORTABLE BLACK BOX
Test bench made by Pablo MartĂnez In this new issue of TMBroadcast I will be analyzing one of the products of the GB Labs SPACE series: the MiniSpace. The British company GB Labs have been manufacturing storage systems since 2000, through the continuous innovation of its products it has achieved considerable success. They have shown commitment, among others, for the post-production market, where they have extensive knowledge on main non-linear editing environments, which enables seamless system integration. The MiniSpace is a portable storage unit, perfect for any work environment, optimised for digital content management anywhere. It provides simplicity and advanced performance, along with centralised storage in any situation, both in fixed locations and possible editing
facilities. When using it, you know for sure that editors' work is supported at all times. It has a simple and user-friendly interface that can easily be integrated with highly advanced editing software; its installation does not need constant technical supervision, which makes this small black box a major stake in environments where reliability, speed and security are paramount, and this is definitely what we are looking for these days. The Space series works with standard protocols, and therefore works with any existing infrastructure. With open Linux XFS, this server's file system offers maximum compatibility and guarantees access to data with no vendor lockin. One of the things that caught my attention most about GB Labs is its
"five golden rules", which apply to the manufacturing, development and implementation of its systems, and are based on 5 very clear concepts: 1.Fast 2.Easy to own 3.Expandable 4.Scalable 5.Feature rich They give us what we need to assess their products; they are designed to be quick in production environments. Plus, they use file systems and open standard network architecture, which guarantees that their systems are easy to install, update and maintain. Similarly, we should note the growing capacity by adding expansion modules, and its scalability to work TMBi - 105

with groups of 2 or 100 users, depending on the needs and integration of third parties. The SPACE series supports open standard file structures, and is compatible with all media formats, and with projects created by leading editing systems, effects and 3D applications. Its open architecture makes it the perfect complement for audiovisual asset management solutions, transcoding farms and animation and rendering systems.

GB Labs has turned the ownership and use of shared storage systems into a totally new experience. Mac, PC, Linux and OS in mix working groups can access files for their editing in an easy and quick way. Projects and content can be moved or copied into high-speed storage units, with integrated tools to manage automation data and a storage system connected to a level 1 network. It supports multiple HD simultaneous editors.
WHAT IT OFFERS On the outside, it is a robust and easy to carry system, with several integrated Ethernet ports, which will help us at different times to set an outdoor multi edit central storage (with no external switch). We will only need to be there, connect the edit stations and get ready to work. On the inside, it is an innovative and simple system that works with an optimised operating system (OS) owned by GB Labs. The Core OS that I have tested is version 3, and it has a web interface that is easy and simple to work with. As we saw earlier when looking at its features, one of the key parts about editing environments (in my case in particular,) is the seamless integration with the editing software and the operating speed that the
system provides. In order to exploit MiniSPACE's potential, we created a real working environment, with four editing stations (two Premier Pro and two FCP7) and a general monitoring laptop. We defined two working methods to carry out the test:
1.- Intake of images into a common working folder and evaluation of two simultaneous projects, in ProRes HD format for each editing station with the same format (given that the project was relatively small); and to set out the work environment as if it were an outdoor location, with a time working limit. We decided not to use asset cataloguing, the working format that we normally use in larger environments. With this working format (in pairs) with the editing stations, the MiniSPACE achieved high data transfer and file processing rate, which is one of the factors that merits special attention within the editing process. Editors were very happy with the workflow obtained.
2.- The second planned method was to generate a stress test. To that end we created several ProRes HD format files and we forced the editing stations to work in multi-track projects, with several common files and some single files for each project. We specifically worked with four video tracks in each station, and applied effects to some of them. When using the huge multiplying effect of simultaneous access demand to material, hardly any "loop playbacks drops in the editing stations were generated. As for the transfer and rendering of the projects, bottlenecks on the MiniSPACE were not generated, which means that its speed and safety is way beyond other devices with similar features. Having done the test, I am not going to give speed/performance

data or configuration data because I think that these numbers depend on the end user and are subjective. I know that the approach of each one of you will be very different. I have performed the test with the configuration that I normally use, and I just have to say that, when
compared to the system with which I normally work, MiniSPACE wins by a landslide.
WHAT WE MISS Honestly, with the bespoke OS and the easy integration with the editing software, nothing is missing. Maybe it could include a redundant power supply because even though it is an option given when shopping it, I think that it is a key element in all portable systems, where most of the time we do not have a UPS.
I have performed the test with the configuration that I normally use, and I just have to say that, when CONCLUSION compared to the When I first started working with system with which I MiniSPACE for this test bench I normally work, really wasn't expecting such an extraordinary performance nor its MiniSPACE wins by a use and configuration to be so simlandslide. ple and intuitive. I have to highlight
the facilities offered by the manufacturer for the initial start-up of the MiniSPACE, which I refused, so that I could start and evaluate its features from scratch, including the first start-up, which is normally the most difficult one. I worked on that for almost an hour, setting working groups, user permissions and using them in production to start with the editing work. When compared to other similar systems, the time spent is far less, almost a third, and this is all thanks to its standard connections and to its open architecture. It has a great quality-toprice ratio. I recommend you visit their website, where you will find a detailed description of the possibilities that the SPACE series offers. I want to thank Tim Grant for lending me the MiniSpace to carry out this test bench, and IB3TV for their facilities.
