Canadian businesses to benefit from what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the three Ds – democracy, demography and demand. We are the world’s largest democracy, demography meaning we are the youngest country in the world, the median age of people in India is still about 23-24, and finally demand – we are a nation of 1.2 billion people. The middle class has a lot of consumption potential which creates a massive demand for all kinds of goods. From all these perspectives you see that India is the only country which can really provide these three elements in the kind of magnitude which no other country can provide. 7 Canada is home to many Indians, with the Cabinet including Indian origin members. What are your views on the Indian representation in Canada?
VIKAS SWARUP INDIA’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO CANADA
1 You are India’s High Commissioner to Canada. How do you feel?
I feel very privileged to be representing India in this fantastic country. My wife and I are still discovering our surroundings but I feel the warmth that we have received from Canadians as well as Indians who have made Canada their adopted home. And the potential that I see for developing the partnership between India and Canada in so many sectors has already justified to me my decision to come here. 2 What goals do you wish to achieve as the High Commissioner?
Broadly, to develop the partnership between India and Canada in every sector that is possible. I think the trade and investment side of the relationship is very important. Canadian pension funds are looking at India in a very big way now. We see a lot of potential in so many other sectors which have opened up, for example, recently a healthcare conference was held with Canadian and Indian professionals to discuss possibilities in that sector. Our sector for food processing is participating in a major food expo in Toronto. You name any sector and you see the possibilities and the potentials between India and Canada because the relationship is very synergestic; it’s a very complimentary relationship. We have the requirement of Canadian technology, resources and investment and we have a very big market for it. From both sides, it is a win-win partnership. 3 How do you plan on making the consulate services more accessible to the people?
Consulate services have been made much more accessible to the people. For instance, now you may not even come to the consulate if you are

applying for a simple tourist visa. You can apply it online. Yes, for some services you still have to come to the consulate and our constant endeavour has been to make that particular experience as easy as possible. If there are specific complaints, then we are always happy to look into those. 4 What ideas relating to India would you like
to introduce among Canadians?
I think there is still inadequate appreciation of the tremendous amount of work that the Indian government has done to make doing business in India much more easier, and to simplify our rules and regulations. We have introduced a 10-year visa for Canadians to make it easier for them to travel to India for business or tourism. So I think there it not a full appreciation of the extent of change that is underway in India and the extent of the opportunities that are present now for Canadian businesses to take advantage of. 5 How can trade strengthen the bond between
India and Canada?
Trade is certainly important; our current level is of around eight billion dollars which I think is way below potential. Canada is now our number one supplier of peas, potash and pulses. Beyond agricultural, I think there are so many other sectors where Canadian companies can find a very good business environment and good market in India. In the infrastructure sector alone we need about a trillion dollars worth of investment and the government alone would not be able to meet that demand. So outside players are most welcome to participate in that. 6 What role does the ‘Make in India’ initiative play in building this relation?
The ‘Make in India’ program is very important for us; it provides a lot of opportunities to TM
That for me is my biggest asset and advantage. No other Indian commissioner or ambassador can boast of having 19 Members of Parliament of Indian origin in the national Parliament and four ministers of Indian origin. My great advantage is that I’m not the only High Commissioner here, there are 1.2 million Indian ambassadors in Canada – the Indian community with its sheer dint of hard work, perseverance, commitment to family values, and rule of law has made such a brilliant name for itself in all walks of life. 8 You were greatly responsible in boosting the Ministry of External Affairs’ social media outreach. What role does social media play in today’s world?
Social media is very important because its advantage is that it allows you to cut through the bureaucracy and reach the person you want directly. We are very alive to the possibilities that are there in social media and to the fact that the communication has to be instantaneous and response has to be immediate. We believe that social media is an excellent tool for putting out our side of the story, for alerting people about what is happening in India, about changes in our visa or passport regulation for instance, and it is a great way for the ordinary folks to reach out to us as a way of grievance redressal. If they have a particular problem and they are not getting a solution, you can reach out to us via social media and expect an immediate response. 9 Your debut novel Q & A was made into the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Do share your interest in writing?
I have written three novels. Writing is a passion but it is strictly something that I do in my spare time. It’s only on weekends that I can think of conceptualizing something and indulging my passion. So far, I have been busy in Canada and have not thought about writing anything but I’m hopeful that Canada is such a beautiful country, people are so nice, warm and inspiring that eventually I will get inspired here. 10
What ideas are you working on right now?
The way the writing process works is a very mysterious one. When an idea strikes you, you really can’t say. It can strike you whenever. Basically I let the creative process work [in] its own mysterious ways, I do not seek inspiration, inspiration comes to me. So as and when that happens, that’s when I will start thinking of a new book.

At only 15 years of age, he has represented Canada on various international platforms and is determined to raise awareness on pressing global issues that he feels strongly about. The 15-year-old was also part of a group of five students chosen by the governor general’s office to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Duke of Cambridge Prince William, Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan, and Minister of Veterans Affairs Kent Hehr, at the occasion. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Sachal moved to Canada with his family when he was 11 months old. He is currently a grade 10 student at Seaquam Secondary School where he is known to be an all-rounder. From playing tennis and musical instruments to debating, Sachal has not only tried his hands at everything but has also excelled.

He is a natural at public speaking. In 2013, he gave a TEDx talk titled the ‘Theory of Creativity’. Shortly after, he was invited by Deloitte Incorporation to give a presentation at Captain James Cook Elementary School in Vancouver to inspire hundreds of young students like himself. “I also started a Speech Club at my school to help students with public speaking and I am an active member of the Debate and Model United Nations Club, where I went on different delegations to debate on issues such as climate change and Arctic sovereignty,” he says proudly. The young achiever has also been a passionate environmentalist. This prompted him to try his luck at the Students on Ice Arctic Expedition in 2016. He

received a $12,000 scholarship from the United States embassy to take part in the expedition. “The journey was more than a chance to look at polar bears and icebergs; it gave me the opportunity to connect with scientists and students from around the world. I immersed myself with the humanitarian aspect of the issue of climate change and its effects on marginalized Inuit communities,” he says of the experience. On his return from the Arctic expedition, he formed Break The Divide – an initiative to connect students all across the world through video calls. The first stage is currently connecting students in BC with youth in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, to particularly raise awareness on mental health. “We also aim to bridge the gap between Aboriginal communities and non-Aboriginal communities, and we encourage a healthy relationship between the North and the South, one of mutual understanding and respect. From our dialogue, we hope to work on brainstorming and implementing pos-
sible long-term, sustainable solutions that will end stigmas about issues facing our communities,” shares Sachal who is now in the process of expanding this to schools all across Canada and in London, Tokyo, Paris, Brussels and Amritsar. His family continues to be a source of strength and inspiration for him, particularly his grandfather. “My grandfather, Brigadier Mohinder Singh risked his life in the 1947 Partition to help thousands of people get to safety. His fortyyear service in the Indian army, where he fought three wars, instilled within me a dedication to help others through different forms of media,” he states. Despite being involved in so many activities and initiatives, Sachal has maintained a flawless academic record at school. He also finds time for volunteering to make a difference. He is part of organizations such as Road2Wellness and Students Without Borders. For Sachal, determination and dedication can achieve anything and that is what he wants to see in his peers.

he recipients of the Abbotsford Community Foundation Award 2016 are two 12th graders from the Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford. Tripat K. Sandhu and Jaspreet K. Sahota are two extraordinary girls that are making their families and communities proud. They are the cofounders of Sikh Sewa International Society of Youth (SSISY), a non-profit organization carrying out humanitarian activities ranging from feeding the hungry to organizing drives to serve those who need health care support. But these girls are thinking big. This is what has pushed them to take the SSISY across the seas. “In December 2016, we finally pursued our lifelong dream of organizing an international medical camp,” says Sandhu. S S I S Y sponsored a one-day ophthalmology camp in a rural village in India, funding over 150 eye exams and surgical procedures. The organization collaborated with India-based Amar Welfare Club, who were able to notify the villagers about the clinic via announcements. Villagers with insufficient funds were provided with treatment at zero cost. Additionally, SSISY sponsored financially-struggling students in India to receive free university education. It all started in the fall of 2015 when Sandhu and Sahota saw a story in the newspaper about the Abbotsford Food Bank’s depleting shelves. This propelled the girls to take action.

“We realized [that] there must be additional ways we could make a more personal and more significant difference. This desire led both of us to establish our nonprofit organization, Sikh Sewa International Society of Youth,” says Sahota. To fulfill this goal, they have held two annual bottle drives raising over $3,600 so far. They also organize bi-monthly soup kitchens for underprivileged citizens of the city by collaborating with The Salvation Army, Cyrus Centre, and Warm Zone. But the realization of every big dream stumbles upon roadblocks. The first one they faced was that initially many local organizations and businesses refused to recognize their efforts, making it difficult to receive sponsorship and to network

further. Others felt that they were just two high schoolers who would not be able to manage such a project logistically. But they persisted. “Due to our young age, many people doubted our abilities. They were unable to recognize our earnest and sincere intentions in bringing positive change to our community,” says Sandhu. Both girls credit their families for providing them with the kind of support that was needed to manage such a project. For Sandhu, her mother has been her greatest inspiration. “She has inspired me to better the lives of others and start initiatives in the community and has continuously encouraged me to advocate for myself and for others who are unable to do so.” TM
Sahota expresses gratitude to her father for leading her through. “From a young age he has taught me about giving back to the community and always helping others. This has led me to acquiring his character traits and being able to create a positive change in my community.” Both Sandhu and Sahota are now heading to university where they plan to continue SSISY’s legacy. “We have found that this is our opportunity to provincially expand and welcome more passionate and determined youth to our organization,” they say. Sandhu will be attending the University of the Fraser Valley to complete her degree on Criminal Justice on a $40,000 scholarship. She aspires to be a human rights lawyer some day. Sahota on the other hand will be attending the University of British Columbia to complete her Bachelors of Science and hopes to become an optometrist.

n today’s world as more and more women are taking up leadership roles, here’s one South Asian woman whose success story is an inspiration to many. Sonia Virk, cofounder of Virk Viyas & Associate Lawyers in Surrey, has come a long way since her move to Canada in 2001. An efficient lawyer, successful entrepreneur, community leader, and independent woman – known for her various roles in the community, Virk has excelled beautifully in each. In March, Virk received the Women in Business Award from the Surrey Board of Trade

(SBOT). “It has been an honour to receive such a prestigious award. It feels good to be recognized by the Surrey Board of Trade for my work as a lawyer and community involvement,” says Virk, of the event that recognizes the hard work of Surrey’s businesswomen and their contributions to the city. The talented lawyer hopes that her award acts as an inspiration to all women struggling in their professions. “Women in many cultures are told to do more, accept less and be okay with whatever they get. We need to change that belief. A woman is a complete person, on her own. She is equally entitled to education, nourishment, opportunities, successes and rewards,” declares Virk. This declaration comes from her personal
experience of struggles, challenges and achievements. Being a first generation immigrant, Virk had a lot of anxiety about her career when she first arrived to Canada. “After I finished law school in Canada and started working, there was still a lot of anxiety, as I didn't know anyone.” This anxiety was overcome with her hard work, determination, and community involvement. “I have built my law practice through networking. I met a lot of people and became part of organizations,” says Virk, who always dreamt of being financially independent. Recalling her decision to become a lawyer, Virk shares that her family always emphasized on the importance of education. “I knew I had to choose a field and pursue education accordingly. I had seen many women dependent on others for their finances. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be financially independent and I knew I could only achieve that through education.” Thus, she chose the field of law as being a doctor or an engineer did not appeal to her. “However, I believe that I

positions. “We still have a long way to go but more women are taking up lead roles in businesses and other organizations. They are excelling in their roles and are being offered leadership roles,” she states, further asserting, “Women form half of world’s population and it is time that we claim our share of the world.” I ask her what skills should young women entrepreneurs need to excel. “Young women who wish to start a business or a career, should be self assured,” Virk answers, further elaborating, “There is no need to make compromises. You can be who you want to be on your terms. They should obtain the

skills they require to run that specific business or career and be good at it. That’s all you need.” Virk points out that an entrepreneur should know how to deal with every aspect of that business. “If your staff quits, you should be able to step in and do what they did for you. Do some research into what is required to operate the business. Hire good staff. Manage your finances really well,” she advices. She also stresses on a good work life balance and recommends going on holidays, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of your health. “Do what you love doing. At the end of the day, money in your bank is just a number, until you get to enjoy it.” Her message to those interested in a law career: “Law is a great field to be in. Law will open up so many opportunities for you. Research what you want to do. Try to get summer positions while you are in law school. Do well in school. Law will always demand hard work. Be prepared for it and enjoy this wonderful profession.”

or long, Bollywood, like any other film industry, has thrived on patriarchal hegemony. While the big screen cherished male actors playing powerful iconic characters such as Anand in the movie Anand, Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Agneepath, or Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg, female leads had limited territory to explore. Besides the stereotypical romantic interest of the male protagonist, a female lead mostly revolved around a social cause or represented a woman’s struggle to break free – Tabu in Astitva exploring an independent identity outside of her role as a wife and mother, Smita Patil in Manthan fighting for her child and community after her husband abandons her, and Shabhana Azmi in Arth discovering meaning in life after learning about her husband’s extra-marital affair.

Despite debuting opposite Bollywood biggie Salman Khan and other industry heavyweights in Dabangg in 2010, Sonakshi carried a strong screen presence in her character as Rajjo. Her succeeding movies Rowdy Rathore, Lootera, Dabangg 2, and Holiday further solidified her name as a new brand of artist challenging the various nuisances a modern day actress faces – body shaming being one of them. Since the start of her career, Sonakshi has vociferously resisted industry’s strict body prototype for actresses. “I have always maintained that be proud of who you are and the way you are. At various events, Sonakshi would often accompany her mother Poonam Sinha and in fact during interviews, would quote her as a force in maintaining Sonakshi’s grounded personality. It doesn’t come as a surprise when Sonakshi quotes her mother again when we ask her about a woman that has profoundly impacted her work and selfidentity. “She has a strong influence on me. nnovation. Environment. Technology. The three forces accelerating Lower Mainland’s fastest growing city come together at a nodal point called Whalley, a town-centre of significant historic importance in the region and now host to a thriving, diverse demographic. As one of the six town-centres of Surrey, Whalley has stronger footing, firstly due to its proximity with other major cities and secondly because it is the only town-centre in the city home to crucial developments that are paving way for a swift upward trajectory for the city. Undoubtedly, when Surrey centre is touted as the next downtown of the Lower Mainland, Whalley and its residents become the supreme beneficiaries. Tien Sher Group of Companies’ founder, Charan Sethi, is building on this vision by making Whalley the epicentre of Surrey’s hustle and bustle. Sethi’s projects in Whalley such as Quattro, Balance and Venue have redefined affordable living for
individuals and families looking to settle in the Lower Mainland. Since its inception, Tien Sher has been working tirelessly to provide cost-effective residences with a high end feel, in order to meet the growing demand for smaller, elegant spaces. Their diverse range of projects are testaments of their consistent client-focused approach. “Whalley has a lot of historical value,” says Sethi, who is taking steps towards its redevelopment with the City of Surrey. The prospect of aligning high rises with booming and prosperous communities is not lost on Sethi’s vision for Whalley, hence collaborating Arts & Culture components within high rise projects is a definitive priority. “A vibrant city needs places to connect and our new development will facilitate that because we have all the right elements to make Flamingo Square into a social hub.” Building community is at the heart of Tien Sher Group of Companies and Sethi’s latest
project, Whalley District, which boasts 1119 units and a walkable pedestrian area for the Arts (Flamingo Square) reflects that vision. “The biggest point on this project is that it’s going to have three high rises and one low rise. By the time we are finished with it, there will be a whole bunch of commercial spaces on the ground floor. It will form a complete community where people can live upstairs and have restaurants and other services available on the ground level,” explains Sethi.
The space has a convenient range of transport options nearby so residents can commute with ease. Modeling the development after Yaletown, Sethi hopes to revive the area with a cosmopolitan flavour by not only amalgamating arts and cultural activities with the diverse demographic but also connecting British Columbians with Whalley’s rich history. Whalley finds its roots in 1925 when Arthur Whalley opened a gas station and a corner store at what became known as Whalley’s corner.

Eventually the last name ‘Whalley’ was adopted by settlers coming down into the area while business and commercial activity initiated. In many ways, Whalley was pivotal in stimulating growth for the rest of the region especially after the construction of Pattulo Bridge in 1937. Present day Whalley has become a focal point of growth and potential for the City of Surrey and its residents. It remains the only town centre in Surrey serviced by Skytrain, is home to Simon Fraser University’s expanding Surrey campus, is the hub of Surrey City Hall activities, flaunts architectural excellence of City Centre library and offers an engaging recreational centre for individuals and families. These facilities are more than enough to cement anybody’s confidence in Whalley’s future. Sethi agrees, “I know a lot of people who are very proud to say they live in Whalley. We’ve already built four buildings here and now

a fifth one is under construction.” With a combined experience of more than two decades in the industry, Sethi shares a passion for delivering immaculate buildings. Like his previous projects, Whalley District has created quite a buzz on social media and Sethi remains as confident about Whalley District, as he was about Quattro and Balance. “They (buyers) see the potential of the pricing going up because prices are so low already and they also like the fact that it
is walking distance to the Skytrain station,” the developer describes. This is the time for smart investors to buy into the area. Indeed, the debate on homelessness and crime rates has made many investors turn their back on Whalley, but Sethi and his team believe in Whalley. By adopting forward thinking measures to revive the essence of this historic town-centre, Tien Sher fills in the gap between rapid advancement and affordable living. One of the ways Sethi seeks to achieve this goal is by introducing arts and culture in the town-centre and by having more live cultural activities on the streets, hence transforming it into what he calls a “pedestrian city.” Surrey Mayor, Linda Hepner addresses the issue from the city’s point of view by saying, “Like other cities in the Metro Vancouver region, homelessness is not unique to Surrey and its pressures are being felt across several communities in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.” She further adds, “The City of Surrey and Surrey RCMP have launched its City Centre Response Plan to address the public safety and public health concerns for both the homeless and the community in the 135A Street area.” Sethi, along with the City of Surrey, is working collectively to diversify this area with his projects, which are not limited to high rise buildings. “We’ll be giving a portion of our building to The Flamingo Square Arts Connection for their programs.” Tien Sher’s in-house team is already in talks with various arts and cultural groups to create a platform that engages and hosts an active arts community, thus bringing new energy and life to an area that was previously neglected. Surrey Centre MP, Randeep Sarai, believes in the importance of arts and culture as an engaging mechanism for Whalley by saying, “Cultural activities and arts serve as an educational tool, therefore, they allow for a positive display of Surrey’s collective identity and as a result
The biggest point on this project is that it’s going to have three high rises and one low rise. By the time we are finished with it, there will be a whole bunch of commercial spaces on the ground floor. It will form a complete community where people can live upstairs and have restaurants and other services available on the ground level,” says Tien Sher Group of Companies’ founder-president, Charan Sethi contribute to our overall image. The Federal Government also recognizes the value of enhancement of arts, culture and multiculturalism, which is why we created the ‘InterAction: Multiculturalism Funding Program’.” Sethi’s vision for Surrey resonates with the City of Surrey, and it’s in perfect alignment with their City Centre Plan of January 2017. The influx of individuals, families and businesses into Surrey projects it as one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, and Surrey City Centre stands at the threshold of this advanced and flourishing future. Surrey Mayor, Linda Hepner, shares her vision for Whalley by saying, “We have made great strides in developing the downtown area of Surrey. For example, the area has attracted billions of dollars in investment and has developed into a thriving financial, health technology and university district.” An array of investments in the region is certain to invite a demographic with a variety of needs including a place to call home and entertain. Tien Sher’s project, Flamingo Square, carefully synchronizes a social space that resonates with these various needs of the existing and future
demographic. More than just a beautiful space to call home, the area smoothly integrates communities into the existing area that is on the verge of becoming the next downtown of the Lower Mainland. Surrey Councillor Tom Gill elaborates on this by highlighting the City of Surrey’s visionary approach for Whalley. He says, “If we can create a number of residential people that live in this neighbourhood who will support the commercial that will happen, that will support shopping. And what it’ll do, it’ll allow us to have that vibrancy that many downtown cores have. So we need a lot [of ] people that’ll live, play and work within the immediate neighbourhood and that’s what we are trying to do.” Penny Priddy, former MP and long-time resident of Whalley, confronts the current challenges Whalley faces. She says, “Whalley is facing the same kind of changes that lots of cities do that are in transition. I always want to say to people, Whalley is not what you just read on the news or saw on the news last night. It’s an old community that’s really quite stable in many ways and now it’s in this
big transition period.” Developers such as Sethi play a substantial role in creating a positive transition for places like Whalley. By engaging with the community, Tien Sher strategizes efficiently to meet the neighborhood’s present and future demands coherently, ultimately solidifying the value the region possesses. Councillor Bruce Hayne cites Regional Gross Strategy, a document that maps out where future development will occur across 22 municipalities of Metro Vancouver. He says, “City Centre Whalley or City Centre as we are now calling it has a fairly aggressive and large master plan. Surrey City Centre was designated as the second metropolitan core of the region by Metro Vancouver in our regional gross strategy. Surrey City Centre was designated as the second metropolitan core, Vancouver being the first metropolitan core.” Key stakeholders within Surrey share a common ground when it comes to revitalising Whalley. Sethi maintains his mission in moving towards the future while celebrating the wisdom of the past. On May 29, Sethi is hosting
Penny Priddy, former MP
a Town Hall meeting at the Whalley Legion on 13525 106 Ave in Surrey, where he is inviting Surrey residents to view the development and present potential names for his buildings on the Flamingo block. Because he wants to preserve the history of Whalley, he is asking people to suggest historic names and places in Whalley. As his project portfolio has grown, so has Tien Sher’s commitment to remain driven to bring customers the ultimate experience in urban space living by appealing to all age groups and backgrounds. “I’ll be here for the next 10 years or so to build on what I have here,” the developer states. At the same time, Tien Sher Group is also developing projects on the Vancouver Island and in Nanaimo.

DARPAN
TM
VOLUNTEER I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Volunteering not only adds a tremendous amount of value to your resume, but it also adds a remarkable amount of value to yourself. Whether it’s volunteering at a homeless shelter or fundraising for a global initiative, it’s extremely important to give back and live
your life with purpose. You will be surprised on how much you will learn from volunteering, and the bonus is you get to acquire volunteer hours while making a difference too! This is a win-win situation as you get to better yourself and work on your personal development while assisting others in need. You will gain valuable skills and experience while helping your community and making a positive difference. This also gives your future employer a chance to see what causes you’re passionate about, and makes you a well-rounded applicant.
JOIN OR START A CLUB Whether this is a sports club, environment club, activities club, or art club – this is a great way to show your dedication and work ethic. This can be easily done through your educational institution or community centers. In the beginning of the year, most schools have a club day where you can go around and see what you’re interested in, or start your own club.
Too busy to get to the bank? We will come to you...
If you start your own club or join one, it shows your commitment, and you’ll develop skills such as working with a team, communication skills, collaborating with others, learning your strengths and weaknesses, multitasking, and troubleshooting. For example, if your field is in environmental sciences and you start a green club, this is great experience on your resume for your future employer to see that you are passionate about the field and like to take initiative.
INTERNSHIPS Internships whether paid or unpaid, local or global, are great opportunities to gain experience and discipline in the field you want to work in. They are a great networking tool to meet the right people and also gain respected mentors. The bonus is that you could be recruited or employed full time after your internship period. These opportunities of working for other companies are great resume builders and give you a huge advantage for future employment, and you will have a much better chance of being employed after graduation. This is a notable foot in the door to a company you might want to work at, and provides you real world experience of what your desired field really looks like. Also, an internship is a great opportunity for you to confirm if this is the field or line of work you want to be in.
ENROLL IN SPECIALIZED COURSES The summer provides you time to take up some courses that could really separate your resume from the rest. This is a great opportunity for you to polish up or gain new skills. For example, if you’re in the field of finance, taking up some advanced economic and accounting classes shows your future employer that you are really invested in gaining knowledge to better your career and future company. In order to be ahead of the game, you need to be acquiring these skills whether it’s taking spreadsheet classes or specialized marketing classes, to make sure your skill set is up to date so that you are a valuable asset to the team.

ageantry is too easily dismissed by critics based on what’s seen on television. I entered the world of pageants and soon found that the many negative perceptions people held were an injustice to the ambitious, intelligent and talented women I met. Each and every pageant contestant I’ve met is so different from the last. I think that’s a beautiful thing – to not segregate people by dividing them based on their differences but rather finding what unites them, and embracing it. Last summer, I was invited by the German Embassy to represent Canada at the European Youth Parliament Forum in Serbia to speak on the extreme circumstances faced by female Syrian refugees. The qualities I developed in pageantry were paramount to making this
DARPAN
TM
trip a huge success for me. I was confident each time I stood up to speak and was so incredibly passionate about the topic since it aligned with my platform of women and girls empowerment. Pageants have taught me to stay true to myself and my values and never to compromise them. Aside from the discipline and drive that pageants have given me, the greatest gift I have received is to be the truest, most authentic version of myself. To radiate a joy of self love that people don’t only see but can feel too. Pageants have taught me to continue to encourage women to feel confident just as they are and to ask for opportunities. It’s all about respect and uplifting each other. I’ve become very self-aware, and much more confident in who I am and my abilities. I seek to empower and encourage women to remember that their beauty and worth is not defined by what they see on TV or social media, but rather it is the inner power that they inherently possess that gives each one of us the ability to change the world. I have learned to uninhibitedly be myself, not a version that other people want or expect. In March I had the opportunity to compete at the Miss Canada pageant where I was placed in the Top 5. I was the only South Asian contestant. It was an incredible honour not only to be representing British Columbia, but to be representing an ethnic minority.
This pageant exists to empower women to be whatever they choose to be. They don’t care about how much you weigh, what colour your skin is, how tall you are, or what you look like in a swimsuit. The women I was blessed to meet have amazing academic and career goals. I have met tremendous individuals, made valuable connections, and have developed a strong support system filled with people who are constantly pushing me to be my best. They’re passionate about service and change making. These are the girls that I choose to surround myself with. This is my tribe. In the spirit of being myself, I couldn’t hold back when it came time to present my on-stage introduction. Rather than starting with my name and where I was from, I began with powerfully identifying myself as a feminist. I then went on to educate the audience on the extreme social pressures, objectification, and injustices faced by females across the globe and within this country. I boldly vowed to do my part to shatter the glass ceiling, and it was only after this, that I greeted the audience with a “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, coming to you all the way from beautiful British Columbia, I am Navneet Kaur Nanan and my heart beats for the justice of ALL women.” Before my name or where I was from, I needed it to be known that as women, “We are worth more than our looks. We are worth more than our bodies. We are worth more.” I knew that it wasn’t my name that needed to be remembered, it was my message. Pageantry has changed me and inspired me to continue to keep pushing myself beyond my comfort zone because that’s where I’ve found the truest, most authentic form of myself. Nothing will stop me from serving my purpose. That’s something that’ll stay with me forever, long after that stage lights dim, and the applause fades. I have pageants to thank for teaching me that I’m limitless in the pursuit of serving my purpose.

while the sport is blooming, there is still work to be done with respect to increasing youth engagement. A major contributor and promoter of this sport is the British Columbia Mainland Cricket League (BCMCL) which was founded in 1914 and has been operating for over 100 years now. There are many other teams playing across the Lower Mainland including juniors and women’s teams totalling close to a 100. According to Inamul Desai, president of the BCMCL, there are currently over 1,800 active members associated with the organization, with many more players that are not registered with BCMCL but playing in the

local communities. Games are played all over the Lower Mainland stretching from West Vancouver to Kamloops and Chilliwack to Surrey. Cricket is an immigrant sport with heavy followings in countries like India, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Australia, and South Africa. Due to the large Indian immigrant population in Surrey, a majority of players originate from the city. Desai agrees, “Cricket is growing very rapidly, especially in Surrey. It has grown so much that cities throughout the Lower Mainland are struggling to keep up with the amount of fields made available. There are teams from Surrey who have to go to Chilliwack to play games. This is not a perfect situation but the passion for the game from our players is truly outstanding.” To many Canadians not familiar with cricket, it can be a confusing game to learn. The Indian Premier League (IPL) of cricket has undergone a huge growth trend over just the past few years. The total value of the IPL grew by 19 per cent from 2015 to 2016 at a value of $4.2 billion (US). IPL also had the largest growth in online engagement with Twitter

specifically experiencing the highest growth of any major sports league with a 300 per cent jump. A new development in the sport of cricket has been the introduction of T-20 games. These games have one inning with a maximum capacity at 20 overs. The duration of these matches are typically two to three hours which makes it a lot easier to watch as compared to first-class matches that span over five days. This new method was created to increase the engagement of casual fans and considering the IPL numbers I shared, it seems to be working. This has generated a higher interest on the IPL overseas and that interest has carried over here to Canada as well. “Now with T-20 games taking a

maximum of three hours to complete, it is much easier to watch and stay engaged with the game as opposed to matches that span over multiple days. By allowing for more casual fans to enjoy these games, you can create a pathway for larger and larger quantities of fans to become fans of the entire sport,” noted Desai. Canadian cricketer Jimmy Hansra, who currently plays for the Abbotsford Cricket Club of the BCMCL, has been part of the game for many years and has contributed greatly to its growth in BC. In 2011, he represented Canada in the World Cup. “It was a great experience to be there and compete against the best players in the world,” he shares.

Hansra and I also discussed the intricacies of the game itself as an outsider to the sport. He mentioned that “there is a lot of strategy involved. One needs to have a high level of mental acumen.” When people are

But don’t let that fool you. Everybody on the field is thinking about positioning and reactions and game situations. It is a complex mental game and highlights the importance of having a good head on your shoulders to compete. Hansra also shared his experiences growing up and playing the sport he loved. From a young age, the talented sportsman was determined to make an impact playing cricket and play at the highest level. “You just have to set your mind to it and you can achieve it,” he asserts. Coming back to the BCMCL, the next step for the league is to grow the game in the minds of regular people and kids across BC. Desai states that the BCMCL “needs more volunteers who can go to schools and raise awareness of the game there.” There are strides being currently taken already as several schools within the Surrey School District organize and play cricket games against each other. Manu Singh is the cricket co-ordinator for

AmrikCheema.com 604-369-7000 schools in Surrey, similarly there are many programs run by various co-ordinators throughout the Lower Mainland. His take on the growth of cricket in BC is that “a lot of younger kids are getting involved in the sport right now. We will see the highest growth among second generation of kids born here from immigrant parents who will pick up the sport.” One obstacle in the way of cricket prospering in BC is the ability for schools to teach the game. Manu explained that “cricket is a niche sport which requires some knowledge about it. So while there are kids who are interested in playing, not many teachers can coach them.” As cricket expands globally, steadily there will be more people knowledgeable about the sport who can pass this on to the younger generations for it to truly flourish. For those of you who are interested in watching local cricket, this summer the BCMCL is hosting their Big Bash with teams from all over Canada competing in an action-packed tournament in Surrey. Also, cricket-lovers are in for another treat as Telus is bringing the sport closer to you with a new additional service. It was another case of honour killing following the horrific stoning of threemonth pregnant Farzana Parveen, which happened outside Lahore’s high court in 2014, and one that raised furore amongst activists and world media towards the crippling state of law defending women’s rights in Pakistan. In October 2016, amidst on-going protests and public backlash, Pakistan’s government sealed a crucial loophole allowing murderers in honour killings to escape sentence by receiving pardon from the victim’s family. Under the new law however, a murderer would only be eligible for pardon if his or her punishment is a minimum of 12-year life imprisonment. Although such a law in Pakistan is revolutionary, it does very little to establish an independent and progressive state of women. Institutions gripping freedom and choices of women are not wavered by such laws, and jirgas or panchayats functioning as institutions of communal justice in Pakistan are one of them. Pakistan, decided to switch gears after spending years fighting honour killings and propagating for women’s rights and finally ventured into creating income opportunities for women to make them economically independent and aware. “There is this culture of making a girl invisible after she is killed in the name of honour killing. People would refuse to take her name. How can we get legal systems involved when something is so difficult [and] so hard to understand?” questions Brohi who experienced the trauma of honour killing at the age of 16 when her cousin was killed by an uncle. With her father, Brohi began laying down the groundwork to fight honour killing and it was during this extensive process that she came across several challenges but never gave up on her resolve to end honour killing. “I was 16. In those times, as a teenager when you’re angry you just feel like you can just achieve whatever. I thought and believed and I still do that we can end honour killing and that’s how I started,” she describes. Contributing to the sustenance of honour killing is a feudalistic mindset regressive to the freedom of women and repulsive to class inequality leading to internalized oppression of various groups. When Brohi was advocating against this practice grounded in communities as legitimate, she faced severe backlash – some said she was going against her culture, for others she was too bold as a female to question control and authority. After three years of advocating against honour killing in and around her village, Brohi took a different approach and launched Sughar Empowerment Society in 2009, a social enterprise with a mission to empower rural and tribal women with socio-economic solutions. Sughar does this by training women into entrepreneurship,

redevelopment, women’s rights, and traditional embroidery – embroidery being a tool to bring women to the centre and have them attend other sessions. “I feel like the only reason people stay poor is because they are in the cycle of needing to use the money immediately. The biggest thing we could learn to teach these women was to invest. It turned out fantastic!” explains Brohi, winner of Forbes’ 2015 Top 30 Under 30 Asia title. Borhi also touches on her own transformative experiences at Sughar. Some years back, a team member who had escaped honour killing decided to go back to her family with her husband. “I told her I’m going to get her divorced because they will kill her. She still has that risk on her head. But in that time she fought, she said ‘I’m going to do this because my family is going to be happy. Just trust me and let me go’.” Brohi adds, “I was in trauma for 6-7 months and she comes back blooming, a new person. I thought I would never see her so happy. It made me realize that sometimes as non-profits or NGOs we actually impose our understanding of happiness on people… And that is wrong. That led us to make so many changes to work with women to help them cope themselves to just unleash the potential within them and let them be their own leaders instead of us coming to them and telling them what’s right and what’s wrong.” To broaden the scope of Sughar Empowerment Society and amplify reach of its 24 centres outside Pakistan, Brohi launched Sughar Foundation in the United States in 2014. As a chief visionary officer, Brohi oversees creative aspects whereas Saba Nazneen Ghori, a long-time activist for women’s rights and awareness, undertakes the executive director’s position. Together with their team, Brohi and Ghori are empowering women and challenging a status quo that embeds honour killing and women subjugation as legitimate traditional practices.

T: 604.638.6998 While all these options have proven their quality and customer service, it is however the buyer’s responsibility to ensure the return and refund policy of each store. Many a times, unpleasant online shopping experiences are the result of not enough research. Online shopping is a slightly different experience than shopping in person, even though we expect it to be the same or even better. The way we sometimes leap on to something we eye in a store, we tend to do that more often in online shopping. But it is important to remember, that we cannot ensure the quality or feel the material online and so research becomes paramount. Reading customer reviews should be the first step towards your research. This is one of the biggest blessings of social media and the online world, so do not forget to make use of it. While online shopping offers comfort, it can take longer. So be sure to plan well in advance if you intend to collect most of your trousseau online. Regardless of what the website says, give yourself more than a month so that in case of exchanges or refunds, you do not lose out. Moreover, don’t get too caught up by deals and discounts. Sometimes, a very good deal online could be a trap and you want to avoid that. Many a times, a higher price and delivery cost is being incurred because you are getting a quality product at your doorstep without having to spend all that time and effort in person.

ongratulations! You’ve given birth to a beautiful baby, the newest addition to your family. The first few months will be busy, especially for new mothers, who are adjusting to a new way of life and a fluctuating schedule. Remember to breathe, but more importantly, once you get back to a regular schedule, turn the focus on yourself. It’s now time to take care of you, and get back into the swing of things. “It is so important to get out and become part of the community again. Having a baby can be a pretty isolating and monotonous experience – moms do the same tasks over and over again with very little sleep,” says Leah Esplen, a registered kinesiologist, fitness instructor and certified pre- and postnatal instructor. TM
Esplen goes on to say, “Exposure to the outside world can be stimulating for mom and baby, and this can actually result in more restful sleeps for both of them – improving their overall health and wellness.” After giving birth, it is beneficial for women to get out of the house, be active, and be around other mothers. There are a range of options for fun, interactive “mom and baby classes” that not only provide an active, fitness component, but also interaction between mother and child strengthening their bond. Moreover, “mom and baby classes also offer an opportunity for mothers to make new friends and develop a community of people who are going through a similar experience,” adds Esplen. From yoga and pilates to aquafit, there are diverse classes designed for women – pre-natal

Esplen created MommyMoves Fitness & Education, which focuses on “fitness and fun for moms and babies.” Over the years, MommyMoves’ aquafit classes have become the most popular, in which mother and child exercise and interact in the water, and the classes are offered at public pools throughout the Lower Mainland. The aquafit class is taught in chest-deep water with the mother holding their baby, so the water is at the baby’s chest level. When a baby is held at that depth it will feel like he only weighs about half of what he weighs on land, explains Esplen. In an aquatic environment, “there are lots of opportunities for bonding to occur from the skin-to-skin contact, blowing bubbles together and being able to look into each other’s eyes at the same height,” says Esplen. This MommyMoves class has the same format as a regular fitness class, in that instructors gradually increase intensity to a certain point and then slowly decrease the intensity so the heart rate returns to normal. “We also

ICDA Inaugural Gala
Your thoughts on ICDA Inaugural Gala. Dentists of Indo-Canadian heritage put this gala together with a vision that through this socially-responsible organization we would like to give back to the community to support some charity oral cancer programmes and dentist funds for students. We also engaged other communities to help people who are not privileged to have their own health care services. Giving back to the community was the main theme behind it.

What was the highlight of the event? The ICDA welcomed Honourable Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, at the Inaugural Gala. Dr. Anil Kohli, recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and B.C. Roy Award, and former president of the Dental Council of India was a chief guest. His presence was a great blessing and it was an honour to host him in Canada. The ICDA recognized Dr. Charles Shuler, Dean of UBC Dentistry, for his contribution to the dental community and presented him with an award.
How much funds did the ICDA Gala raise? The funds raised were around $20,000 thousand which will be distributed between the UBC Dentistry Centennial Bursaries.
What response did you get from the attendees? The response was overwhelming; we are looking forward to the next event. TM

he Indo-Canadian Dental Association (ICDA) hosted its Inaugural Gala on March 11, 2017. The Gala celebrated the inception of the non-profit organization, honoured its founding membership along with notable dignitaries in attendance, and raised a significant amount of charitable funds for the event’s beneficiaries. Dr. Harinder Dhanju of Pacific Oral Health Society and board of director of ICDA shares the key moments of the event.
What’s your advice on dental/ oral health? I would like to motivate our community members to visit the dentist of their choice atleast twice a year. If you keep your mouth healthy, you keep your body healthy. Also prevention is better than cure, and most of the oral diseases are preventable. We don’t have to go to lengthy procedures on a dental chair if we can prevent that disease.

For the gatte, mix maize flour and baking soda; add melted clarified butter and mix. Add the remaining ingredients, adding just enough curd to make a firm dough which binds properly. Add one to two teaspoon of water if needed. Keep aside for 10 minutes. Roll into half inch cylinders. Boil enough water in a deep pan, add the cylindrical dough and boil for 10-12 minutes till cooked. Remove from water, reserve the water. Cool gatte and cut into small pieces. Heat oil in a deep pan and deep-fry gattas for two minutes. Do not fry for too long as they turn hard on doing so. Heat clarified butter in a deep pan, add cumin, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaves and stir over medium heat until the seeds begin to crackle. Add green chillies, onions and sauté until onions turn golden. Add ginger and stir till golden brown. Add the yogurt mixture and stir over low heat until it turns dry. Add two and a half cups of the reserved liquid and bring to a boil. Simmer for two minutes. Add the gattas, garam masala and mint and bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. There are even some cultures which consume tea when they are thirsty, instead of water,” reveals Maranda Barnes, cofounder and director of business development and corporate communications at TWG Tea, a globally-known tea brand that started in 2008. The origin of tea dates back thousands of years. Tea plants

are native to East Asia, and probably originated in the borderlands of north Burma and southwest China. “For millennia, tea has shaped landscapes and geography, cultures and traditions, destinies and desire. Tea is native to Asia and is the reflection of every tea producing country’s culture and civilization. Everyone in Asia is born with a proverbial cup of tea,” says Barnes, further sharing an interesting fact on the drink. “The surprising truth behind tea that is often forgotten is all the different types (black, green, blue (oolong), yellow, white) originate from one sole plant species called Camellia sinensis.” There is no denying that tea plays an integral role in the South Asian community, and
drinking it daily has become a common habit for many. In fact, India is the second largest producer of tea in the world after China and is considered to be the world’s largest tea-drinking nation. Though there is no clear documentation on tea’s origin in India, according to Barnes “after wild tea plants were discovered in India in the early 19th century, tea has been infused into the culture ever since.” Pointing out the highest teaproducing regions of India, she says that the drink has been woven into many aspects of South Asian lifestyle for centuries. “The Darjeeling region, many associate as the champagne of teas, is highly sought after for their exceptional quality and unique flavours and is only one of many highly cel-

Also, Assam, Nilgiri, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh are all vital regions shaping the rich tea culture in South Asia. It has grown to be a part of their heritage.” A quick look at tea consumption among various cultures and countries is enough to confirm that it is imported and exported on a large scale around the world. The tea industry contributes greatly to the economic growth of countries exporting tea, especially China and India. “15,000 cups of tea are drunk every second all over the world. It is like perfume, very personal, and everybody can find what suits his/ her tastes. TWG Tea believes there is a tea for everyone and every occasion,” shares Barnes. For a safe tanned hue Replace your expensive tinted creams with this homemade tanning lotion. Brew a very strong cup of red or black tea and apply the infusion to your skin with a cotton swab. Allow the lotion to dry before rinsing. Use this recipe to maintain a healthy, tanned appearance all year long.
To alleviate sunburn After prolonged exposure to sun, the skin is considerably weakened and dehydrated. To remedy this and alleviate the discomfort of sunburn, soak in a cool bath mixed with six to eight litres of a strong tea infusion. The tea will contribute to the regeneration of skin cells, as it is rich in vitamins A and B, and zinc.
To protect against odours: To refresh a pair of shoes and eliminate unpleasant odours, place a gauze sachet filled with green tea in your shoes for a few days. The chlorophyll in the tea leaves will eliminate any odours. You may also wish to take advantage of the deodorizing virtues of green tea by using a similar tea infusion during a footbath.
To strengthen teeth and nails: As a mouthwash, tea contributes to a healthy mouth, preventing the onset of dental decay and fortifying the enamel, while the tannins in tea sweeten your breath. For a pleasantly fresh-tasting tea mouthwash, choose a mint green tea. To strengthen nails, soak in a warm tea infusion for several minutes. - Inputs by TWG Tea

that involves getting outdoors and using your body. Happily, you live in a region of the country (and indeed the world) that offers outdoor spaces that are practically unrivaled in their easy access and beauty. And there’s an outdoor activity for everyone.
FiTNESS Get the right gear Shifting your fitness routine outside comes with a number of health, safety and comfort risks, so be sure to get the right equipment. Breathable, comfortable clothes will go a long way in keeping you cool and happy in the heat. Shoes with reliable tread will prevent slipping when running. Brightly-coloured clothing, reflectors or lights should be worn to bolster invisibility when working out in low light. And, of course, be sure to stay hydrated with a water bottle or camel bag when sweating it in the sun. Speaking of sun, be sure to use sunblock to protect

Explore your city Not everyone realizes it, but the simple act of walking is a great form of exercise. Now that the sun is out again, take this opportunity to get to know your city better. Hit the streets and spend some time wandering an unfamiliar neighborhood.
Give trail running a try For most people, running on cement or the treadmill is the only way to go. But when the weather permits, a trail run is a great way to change things up. Not only does it provide you with a beautiful, natural setting, but the uneven changes in terrain will cause you to work hard, resulting in more calorie burn and muscle development.

Build an outdoor routine You have your indoor fitness routine – build one you can take outside. This likely means minimizing the need for equipment by doing bodyweight exercises. Pushups, lunges, burpees, long jumps, mountain climbers – make a list of exercises that will hit a range of muscle groups, then hit the yard.
Get a jump rope Not only is a jump rope a great piece of fitness equipment in general thanks to its full body workout and high rate of calorie burn, also it provides an outstanding outdoor workout. It can go anywhere – your driveway, the park, the beach or anywhere else with a flat surface and fresh air.
Get the group involved Whether you’re looking for companionship, motivation or safety, exercising outdoors can often be supported by a friend or friends. Play a team game, find a running partner or simply let someone close to you in on your plans so that if anything happens somebody knows where you went and when you were expected back. Simply put, when it comes to fitness, the more the merrier – especially when the sun is shining.

ith summer here, most people are eagerly looking forward to spending their days on the beach. Before enjoying your perfect summer activity, you must not forget to consider two factors that may act as eventual downers for your skin – UV rays and salt. The prolonged exposure to high UV index rays can cause tanning of the skin, skin burns, and also contribute to premature ageing of the skin. Along with this, the high salt content of sea water tends to dehydrate the skin and make it look parched and wrinkled. Here are some simple tips to maintain the sheen and beauty of your skin during summer and afterwards.

Tips to maintain the sheen and beauty of of your skin
Prepping before summer
1
Sunscreen is important
2
Shed the dead skin
A sunscreen of SPF 30 or more should be used regularly and more so for a few weeks before summer. It will protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV light. Many people who use a sunscreen on the face skip the arms and legs. As a result, the skin of these areas gives away the age. For convenient reapplication, use a sunscreen spray every two hours.
A mild scrub should be used twice a week. This will get rid of the dead cell layers. Not only will this add to the glow of your skin but also enhance the penetration of active ingredients used on the skin.

Never forget the C-T-M routine
If you do not have a regular cleansing, toning, moisturising (C-T-M) routine, this is a good time to start. If you have problematic or sensitive skin, get your dermatologist to prescribe suitable products. As it is too hot, many people avoid using a moisturiser on the arms and legs as it makes one feel sticky. This results in the skin in these areas to become dry and increases the UV damage during summer. A gentle soothing moisturiser should be used regularly so the skin is soft and well hydrated.
4
Eat right, live right
Drinking two to three litres of water a day, eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, and good relaxing sleep will help in maintaining a well-toned body in addition to the skin benefits.Â
5
Take care for the perfect pucker
A good lip balm with an SPF of 15 or more should be used regularly. This should be used before applying any lipstick or lip gel.

Prepping during summer
1
Keep up the C-T-M routine
Continue with your cleansing, toning, moisturising routine and use of any medicated creams prescribed by the doctor. Moisturise the skin at night by using a gentle soothing moisturiser all over the face before retiring to bed. This allows the skin to heal and renew during the night.
2
Ensure U V protection
Water-resistant sunscreens are available which are effective for up to an hour while in the water. A broad brimmed hat and sunglasses are best for additional sun protection. It is also advisable to try and stay under a beach umbrella or gazebo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the UV index is at its peak.
3
Keep your skin and body hydrated and healthy
Dehydration is a big issue due to the high salt content. It is advisable to keep sipping on cold water, fresh fruit juices or snacking on juicy citrus and other fruits while at the beach. This will provide you a healthy dose of anti-oxidants in addition to keeping your skin well hydrated. It is better to avoid alcohol as that can cause further dehydration.
4
Rinse and dry
It is best to wash off the salt water as soon as practically feasible as salt on the skin can cause dehydration, cuts and abrasions.
5

Never break away from the C-T-M routine Continue with your regular cleansing, toning, moisturising routine. Although one is back from the beach, a sunscreen should be used regularly to protect the skin from the high UV index.
Swimming would be a great cardiovascular exercise and will help to keep your body toned and burn off any excess calories consumed during the vacation.

If you have come back with a sunburn, it is advisable to see a dermatologist. They will be able to prescribe creams to cut down the inflammation early so that there is no chance of the skin healing with pigmentation.

Try a home spun mask
A face pack containing sour food items like yogurt, vinegar or lime juice may be used in combination with gram flour or sandalwood powder. The acidic nature of the sour ingredient works as a natural peel and helps take the tan away. The same pack can be applied on arms, legs, hands and feet to get rid of the tan naturally and gently.
4
Hydration and colourful diet is the key
Drink plenty of natural fluids like water and coconut water to keep the body hydrated and cool. Eat plenty of brightlycoloured fresh fruits and vegetables. The high dose of anti-oxidants will promote healing of the skin.

An active healthy lifestyle of exercising regularly and getting adequate rest at night will help the mind stay relaxed and will help the skin to heal.

Step 2: Moisturise Once you’ve removed all the superficial dead skin from your legs, replenish the hydration with a moisturiser. Not only will a good moisturiser make your legs look instantly revived, but exposed legs need more protection from the elements. It’s very drying to have bare legs out in the sun and wind all day. If you’re stopping at this step, then go ahead and use your favourite moisturiser. But if you plan on using self-tanner on your summer legs, keep in mind that while it’s good to moisturise your legs

How is fashion in India evolving and influencing the global fashion scene? When we started out 18 years ago, there was a vacuum in the space for modern Indian clothes for the younger generation. The only option for young women was to get something stitched by the neighbourhood tailor or alter their mother’s outfits. Going from there to now with big fashion weeks in India, social media, international buyers and bloggers flocking to India, I would say Indian fashion has become a major player and influencer in the international fashion scene. Now I see an increasing number of designers catering to a global consumer who wishes to wear her tradition with a dash of modern insouciance.
What has been the most defining moment of your career so far? The first mainstream outfit that I designed was for the ‘Shoppers Stop Designer of the Year’ show at the age of 15. It was a cream anarkali with a black cropped jacket that was worn by Aishwariya Rai-Bachchan. It turned out to be the winning garment, and even after so many years, continues to be a defining moment in my career as it validated my choice of fashion as a career.
What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed
into your designs? I am currently intrigued by the dark romanticism typically associated with murder mysteries and this has manifested itself in my summer 2017 collection ‘Lady M.’ This collection is in particular inspired by Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, its dazzling costume display, and is a nod to the nuanced finesse of high society dressing in the late 1930s.
Do you have a specific research process before you start a new project? My design process works in reverse to the norm. Silhouettes are the first thing that excite me – this is the first aspect I choose. I then move on to the embroidery and fabric, with the colour palette being chosen last. While designing for fashion week is a more streamlined process, I’m constantly looking for

I’m forever scouring through Pinterst, taking down notes, sketching in my diary. My design process is a bit erratic, but there is a method to the madness, and that is what gives every piece its essence and ties it together. I can’t design in isolation; it’s not just about the sketch for me. For a design to become a reality, it needs to be approached with a 4D attitude. fashion? I am a very visually driven person, and textures and patterns (often from art, architecture, jewellery, intricate patterns, and vintage costumes), inspire me. It’s also the excitement to translate these into something wearable. To create something concrete and see a concept turn into a reality also drives me. I am particularly drawn to the Victorian era and I almost feel like I have a connection to that age from a past life. I’m extremely taken by shows like Downton Abbey, and books like Pride & Prejudice. There is just something about the romanticism, simplicity, and conduct of the period that draws me to it. I am also influenced by lifestyle and people – for me it’s all about visualizing how someone would wear my outfit and adapt it to their needs.
Biggest fashion blunder any bride and groom can make? Having pre-conceived notions about what and what not to wear is the biggest mistake brides and grooms can make. Don’t be lazy or fixated about what works. Be open-minded and try on as many styles as you can before making the final purchase. It’s important not to be a fashion victim. Dress according to your body type and choose something you’re comfortable in. Make a note of colours that have always looked good on [you], and try and choose from that palette, so that there’s no going wrong with the end result.
What can we expect from Payal Singhal for 2017? I started the year with my first solo show at Lakmé Fashion Week. Inspired by the dark romanticism of the murder mystery Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, this Summer 2017 collection is a nod to the nuanced finesse of high society dressing in the late 1930s. 2017 will be an exciting year for our brand – we are revamping our online store for a more enhanced experience and have also launched our quarterly inhouse magazine called PS Diary.

he ultimate guide for the “Gentlemen” does not exist. What does exist is a set of recommendations that will keep your game sharp and style on point, no matter what the occasion or season. First, although this may not be for everyone, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of men’s jewellery. This ranges from stingray bracelets to silver rings. Always look for something that speaks to you as a person, because not only is it an accessory but an awesome conversation starter. Next, the collar pin for a dress shirt is another item that has been seeing a rise in popularity. It adds a bit of character to nearly any suit, whether you’re going to a corporate business meeting or night out at a rooftop bar. It’s one of those accessories you can wear with a tie or without. The added layer of
TM
sophistication is subtle because of its size but noticeable because it’s one of the first places people look. The question is: do you want to blend in or stand out among the masses? The third thing to keep in mind is there are always two sides to any style. Besides going for a very modern look with the collar pin, you can opt for a pair of stainless steel collar stays. Behind most collars there are always factorymade plastic collar stays. Switch those with your new stainless steel ones. They offer you a cleaner and crisper look. Believe me; most people wouldn’t even know what collar stays are so it’s one of those add-ons that doesn’t merit a whole lot of praises. However, it’s the added bit of “Je ne sais quoi” that makes it all worth it. Much like how concepts such as a person’s “presence” are illusory, they nonetheless make a difference. There’s a saying in Chinese when it comes to dressing well: “Wear the wrong shoes and
DARPAN Style look 50 percent poorer.” That has always been something that stuck out with me and if you really think about it, it makes perfect sense. No matter how fancy the suit, how nice the tie or how good looking you are, if it’s matched with outworn dress shoes, you might as well go casual. Perfect shoes to have in your arsenal are double monk, single monk and classic oxfords with rounded toes. Double monk are for a more formal occasion, whereas single monk are fine for a more casual night out, and oxfords are your all-purpose shoes that can be worn at any occasion. The only tip is make sure to get your shoes shined regularly because 1) it looks better and 2) it helps maintain the integrity of the shoes so you can wear them longer.

Some style pointers for women When it comes to women’s fashion, I cannot say with confidence that I know what women want and I mostly likely never will. However, I can offer a couple of pointers that have been made known to me by friends as well as some I have picked up myself just by being alive and going out once in a while. It is understandable that some women live and die by the makeup they wear, with all the tutorials and step-by-step guides to looking beautiful they’ve seen. I’m here to tell you that quite a number of men really do view it as excessive. Not only do you lose your uniqueness but it’s really just a pain. Go for a more minimalist and natural look. It will save you hours of time as well make you stand out among the girls who seemed to have all watched the same tutorial. One more small tidbit is that the exposure you get from wearing 5-inch heels only lasts for about as long as it takes for you to get into the club or venue. Men understand that women in heels look sexier but again, there is no need to go to the extreme. Losing the capability to stand as the night progresses because your feet hurt is worse than just wearing slightly shorter heels. Look amazing but be practical.

It is possible to live an incredibly good life with an anxiety disorder.
STEPS TO EFFECTIVELY

ANXIETY By Ruby Fremon
Anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. With the amount of stress we put on ourselves regarding finances, career, education and family, it’s no wonder that the number of people struggling with anxiety continues to rise.
A
nxiety is real, and it’s an epidemic that is taking over our society. I know this all too well, because I live with anxiety. It’s a crazy thing. There are days where you feel amazing, and then there are days where you feel so shaken up that making a decision about what to eat

for breakfast feels absolutely impossible. There was a period in my life when anxiety truly took over and I found myself experiencing panic attacks almost daily, some of which would cause me to blackout. When anxiety hits, it can feel as though you lose complete control over your mind as it wanders into the most negative places, over-analyzing and making ridiculous “what if” statements while your body begins to shake due to the boosted activity in your nervous system. It’s a frustrating thing to live with, and I know because I’ve lived with it for over 20 years. But anxiety is manageable, and it is possible to live an incredibly good life with an anxiety disorder. In a recent study held by Statistics Canada, it was found that 2.6 per cent of Canadians aged 15 and older reported symptoms
DARPAN
TM
consistent with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), an anxiety disorder characterized by a pattern of frequent, persistent worry and excessive anxiety about several events or activities. What’s important to understand
is that this 2.6 per cent pertains to GAD only; there are actually seven other anxiety disorders that are not included in this statistic. Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada shared the following: “the 12 month prevalence for any
DARPAN HEALTH anxiety disorder is over 12% and one in four Canadians (25%) will have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime.” Simply put, anxiety is the most common mental illness in Canada. So why are we being so hush hush about it? Why are so many people ashamed of admitting their struggles with this often-crippling mental illness? It’s time to talk openly about this mental illness that is plaguing our society, because the more we talk about it, the more we can help each other through it. Anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. With the amount of stress we put on ourselves regarding finances, career, education and family, it’s no wonder that the number of people struggling with anxiety continues to rise. After decades of living with anxiety, I’ve cultivated tools to help me manage it effectively, without prescriptions or alcohol. I definitely still have those days where my anxiety wants to creep in, but these tools help me conquer my anxiety successfully.

Here are five tools you can use to effectively manage your anxiety:
Ground Yourself in Reality Anxiety often happens when we get carried away with our worries and “what if” statements. This is something I refer to as “future-hopping.” It’s important to ground yourself in reality when you find yourself over-thinking an undetermined future. When you feel anxiety creep in, ground yourself by paying attention to what’s really in front of you. With your hands, touch the seat that you’re sitting on or the items in front of you, and identify and name the objects around you. For example, if you’re sitting at your desk, touch the actual desk, touch your seat, and acknowledge the items on your desk by identifying them either out loud or in your head. The goal is to get back in the present moment.

ease the symptoms of anxiety. If you feel anxiety in the middle of the day, go outside for a walk or run around the block and shake up your energy. An added tip… Adopt a form of exercise that you truly love. If weightlifting isn’t something you enjoy, don’t do it! Take up yoga or Zumba instead. The important thing is that you are moving your body daily.

Working Out This is my personal favourite way to combat anxiety, and is best used as a preventative tool. If you find yourself battling anxiety daily, then work out daily, and do it first thing in the morning. Anxiety is often caused by displaced energy, or “stuck” energy. I am a big fan of meditation. Not only does it help calm your energy, but it also helps to bring you in the present moment. Just like working out, this tool is best used daily, and first thing in the morning. However if you find yourself experiencing anxiety during the day or in the evenings, it’s an easy tool to implement on the spot. If you struggle with quieting your mind, then stick to guided meditations. With so many apps available (my personal favourite is Insight Timer), there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be meditating.
TM
This tool is highly effective in the middle of a panic attack. Anxiety moves your breath from your belly (where it’s meant to be) to your chest, which often exasperates the situation because you’re taking in less oxygen. When you feel yourself experiencing anxiety, bring your breath back into your belly. Expand your belly with each inhale and contract it with each exhale. Count your breath, starting with a 4 count inhale, then hold your breath for 5 counts, and exhale for 6 counts, and repeat. Repeat this breathwork for a few minutes as your body begins to calm down with the added oxygen intake.
The Starfish Pose I’ll be honest… this is my go-to tool and it’s definitely a little odd, but it works! Whether you’re starting to feel anxiety creep in, or you’re in the middle of a panic attack, this definitely works. Especially when paired with deep belly breathing. All you have to do is lay down flat on the floor in a starfish pose (arms and legs wide open), and breathe. This helps you ground your energy and shift yourself into the present moment. Anxiety can have a negative impact on your life, but only if you let it take over. Refuse to let it win. Adopt these tools and use them to effectively manage your anxiety so you can focus on creating a life that feels good. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ecades ago our knowledge and understanding of mold was somewhat limited.Today science, research and advanced detection tools have allowed us to understand mold and to find mold in ways that were never before possible. Common household mold can cause a wide range of serious health-related issues. In fact, in large quantities, mold and mold spores can result in severe allergic reactions as well as substantial respiratory problems. If you suspect that mold may be growing in your

home, it is imperative that you have a mold inspection performed sooner rather than later.
How does mold grow? In the simplest of terms, mold thrives on moisture. Mold spores cannot be seen by the naked eye and are easily carried through air currents. Mold spores can land on almost any type of surface that is suitable for its growth. Any location inside or outside where there is moisture, warmth and dark-

leaking roof, leaking pipes or even a wet carpet can all promote mold growth. Basements, kitchens and bathrooms are prime locations for the growth of unwanted mold. In fact, any place where there is little to no sunlight, poor ventilation, and humidity, there is likely some amount of mold growing or attempting to grow.

of a musty odour. Even though mold is not visible to the naked eye, a musty odour is a clear telltale indication that it may be growing behind walls, under carpeting or in other areas that are not so obvious. Anytime a musty odour or smell is detected in your home, plan for a mold inspection. Another more convincing sign that mold is growing is when you can see it with your own eyes. While mold sometimes looks like common dirt, it is frequently the growth of mold that should be met with immediate action.
Mold can cause allergies A few of the more common symptoms of mold allergies are skin rashes, itchy eyes, runny nose, headaches, unexplained skin irritation, persistent coughing and sneezing, shortness of breath, sinus congestion, throat irritation, and wheezing. It is important to note that there are many different types of molds and mold spores in existence. That said the reaction to mold exposure varies substantially. The most toxic molds can have a very serious effect on human health. These highly toxic types of mold produce hazardous chemicals known as mycotoxins. Unlike the common symptoms associated with regular mold allergies, the sympTM
toms of extremely toxic mold exposure include organ damage, various cancers, bleeding, impairment of mental function, and loss of life in severe cases.
How do I prevent mold growth? Staying proactive when it comes to a leaking roof, leaking pipes and even a leaking shower or any other type of water leakage is the best way to stop mold growth in its tracks. Even less obvious condensation that occurs on metal pipes, windows or concrete walls should be suspect and addressed as a way to prevent mold growth. Reducing humidity through the use of a dehumidifier is also an excellent option. Opening windows frequently to allow for fresh airflow through your home is another good practice. Avoid piling up wet clothing on the floor as this can promote the growth of mold as well. At the end of the day, having a routine mold inspection performed on occasion is always a smart move for homeowners.

How did you meet each other? We met at a friend’s party one summer evening.
What do you love most about one another? Taren: His sense of humour. Andrew: Her laugh and her love for her family.
Could you share your proposal story? Andrew: I proposed on the sky walk in the UBC Botanical gardens, where we went on one of our first dates. Back then, we had hopped the fence to the sky walk because we got there after closing. Because it was closed and we were the only people there, we recreated that date sneaking in again after hours, but this time I had the ring. Right before I gave it to her she said, “If you TM
weren’t such an idiot this would be a nice way to propose!”
Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment? The experience of the temple surrounded by 400 family and friends was our favourite moment.
Could you tell us about your reception? It was an informal gathering with no set tables. It was just people socializing, eating and dancing. It was all about having a good time, socializing and ripping it up on the dance floor. There was Indian street food, a home made bar, and it was set on Granville Island (one of our favourite places in the city).

What are the strengths of your marriage? Taren: We laugh a lot and make fun of each other. Trust and communication help, plus I’m super cool and Andrew is a nerd, so opposites attract.

enerally when I test a luxury car they tend to stand out, but every once in a while a test car is very unassuming or even subdued. That is just how I would describe my 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300 test vehicle in brown. The lower placed grill just gives the car a more common look. Once you stop and look at the E300 you begin to appreciate the simple yet attractive lines of the car. As you enter the car you find the subdued lines leading to a nice well laid-out interior. The higher rear seats do hamper rear vision a little but once you get used to the mirrors and standard backup camera, seeing behind becomes stressfree. As you would expect from a Mercedes, shifting through the nine-gear ratios was flawless as you never really felt it shift under normal acceleration. Like every other Mercedes I have driven over the years, han-
dling was almost like a sports car or maybe better in some cases. The car glides around tight corners or bends in the road like it was almost stuck to it. Stopping was top notch as well, as due to the car’s advanced suspension it allows to just grip better than most. One thing that did impress me about the motor was the fuel consumption during the test time with the car. The 10.8 L/100 km city was right on, which for a car that weighs in at 1,765 kg, is better than other cars of similar size. On the highway on a level surface, I bettered the stated 8.1 L/100 km which really impressed me. eople often ask me “what is your favourite car,” I always try to be diplomatic about it. But when pressed, I will confess that over the years the Lexus IS series of cars have been the ones I like to drive the most. The latest IS I have tested is the 200t series, which is the base model of the IS line-up and the only rear drive model in the group. The 250 and 350 models are all-wheel drive (AWD), making the 200t a little different. So why do I like the IS series so much? First off for me, they are just the right size for today’s congested roads. They are slightly smaller than the current full-sized cars, making them easy to get about in traffic and manoeuvre in tight parking lots and spaces. At just 4,680 mm long and 1,810 mm wide, I found it easy to manoeuvre about in tight spaces. This translates to a comfortable interior that will seat four adults without feeling cramped and with adequate leg room in the rear. The IS is classed as a five-seater, so you could squeeze in an extra person if needed. Trunk room is good at 0.31 cubic meters (10 cubic feet) for a car of this size.

the car a good power range no matter what kind of road the car encountered. The other side of an eight-speed transmission is fuel consumption. Driving the car in the city gave me about 10.6 L/100 km while on the highway I did get the specified 7.3 L/100 km. As you might expect, handling was what I have come to expect from the IS series cars and it was excellent. While testing the car, I encountered some high winds and the car was solid with no sway whatsoever. Passing and accelerating on the highway was as well very acceptable from a 4-cylinder car. What really stands out about the Lexus cars and especially
the IS 200t is how easy it is to become familiar and comfortable with the car. All the controls were well-placed and well-marked. This allowed the driver to easily get the feel of the car and get to know the features of the car without spending a lot of time experimenting with knobs, buttons and various screens on the dash. It didn’t take long for me to get used to the car and have fun driving it. The base price of the IS 200t is around $42,000, and mine with the F Sport package added another $3,000 which in my mind was a necessity. By far Lexus cars have become a new force in the luxury car market that should not be overlooked if you are shopping for a slightly smaller high-end car. As well when it comes to resale value, the Lexus line holds their value very well.

t seems that over the years the auto makers have forgotten about those individuals that really enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride. The kind of ride that soaks up many of the bumps and dips we encounter every day. Well, Lincoln has answered their wishes with the new Continental. This car is big, comfortable and has a smooth ride that few cars can rival today. My ties with the Continental go back to a 1964 model my friend had in the mid-70s; in fact it was the first car I ever drove after I obtained my temporary driver’s licence. Having driven many Lincolns, I will be

the first to say that this new Continental is a lot like but genuinely better than its predecessors. The test car I was given was the Continental Reserve – the upper model in the twocar line-up. The car lists for a reasonable $60,500 but once you start to add all the extras, this Continental creeps up to $80,450 minus sales tax. On the outside, the Continental looks stylish without looking like an old man’s car. The lines are nicely sculptured to give the car a presence but not overdone and nothing harking back to Continentals of old. The glass roof even allows the rear passengers a sky view. Where the Lincoln engineers really did their work was inside the car. Here you find big comfortable seats that adjust to almost every body type. The seats in my car even had a massage feature – something those on long trips would greatly appreciate. This Continental has the biggest back seat area I have seen short of a limousine. The car has two prominent seats that are about as comfortable as they come in a back seat configuration. The optional aft sound system controls make sitting in the rear as much better than almost any other car of this class. Now, if needed the center console will fold up to allow for a middle passenger. Topping off the luxury features is an innovative electric push-button inside the door handles. Just press with your thumb while holding the handle and the door pops open, and yes it takes a little getting used to, as we have all been conditioned to pull a handle to exit. All these options come with a price, and that is weight. Powering this full-sized Continental is a 400 horsepower with a 3.0-litre twin turbo all aluminum V6 engine. As you might expect, add 400 lb-ft of torque and you have a car that is very quick. As well, you can shift this all-wheel drive (AWD) six-speed automatic with paddle shifters if the urge hits you. Even though the Continental can soak up the bumps, handling is very good. In and out of corners the car grips the road well and the added benefit of the AWD aids when the roads are wet or snow-covered. Accelerating and passing on the highway are also very respectable, making any long distance touring relaxed. The Continental is just a little bit different from the trend for fast, good handling cars with stiff suspensions. It bucks the trends by offering the driver a softer ride without sacrificing good handling. I have to admit I was impressed with this car’s quality and good road manners. How people react to this new kind of ride will determine whether the other manufactures will follow suit in the future.

he coming month in movies is all about love and laughter, along with a bit of action and dancing. Starting with Yash Raj Film’s quirky rom-com Meri Pyaari Bindu, which not only promises to tell an unusual love story but is also high on nostalgia. Then there is Irrfan Khan’s comedy drama Hindi Medium, which deals with the current state of the education system in India. Moving forward there is another romantic drama – Half Girlfriend, which is sure to entice all the youngsters with its contemporary theme. And then comes the festival of Eid, which assures us our yearly dose of Salman Khan. This time it is the superstar’s most-awaited film Tubelight, which is all set to add to our festivities, followed by Tiger Shroff’s dance film Munna Michael. To put it in a nutshell, Bollywood promises tons of entertainment in the coming months.
It’s always a delight to watch Irrfan Khan on screen and this time around the man is all set to tickle our funny bone with his comedy drama – Hindi Medium. Directed by Saket Chaudhary, the film is about a young couple who aspires to become a part of the so-called elite society and is willing to go to any length. The film also stars Pakistani actress Saba Qamar, who plays Irrfan’s wife. While not much is known about the plot yet, director Saket Chaudhary revealed to a daily, “Hindi Medium is a story about how education that is supposed to be a tool of enlightenment has become a tool to create inequality. This inequality is created on the basis of English schools versus regional language schools, private schools versus government schools.” Must say, this one has got us all excited now.

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s popular novel of the same name, Half Girlfriend featuring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is a story of a Bihari boy Madhav, who falls in love with the cool and sassy Riya Somani. The film explores the modern day romantic relationships, where the boy and the girl are often not clear about their relationship status with each other. Director Mohit Suri, during the trailer launch of the film said, “The film essentially deals with the complex relationships of the youth today who has commitment issues.” While the book made quite an impact on the youngsters, let’s see if the movie too has a similar effect on them.

While the team is tight-lipped about the plot, it is heard that Salman will be seen essaying the role of a slow learner called Laxman in the film, who has set off to find his missing brother post the war between India and China. Director Kabir Khan said in an interview, “Salman will be seen in a completely different way in the film. If people have thought that Salman’s performance is special in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, then his performance in Tubelight is five times better than it.” Now this one needs to be watched first day first show, right?

Directed by Akshay Roy, the film follows the story of Abhimanyu, a pulp fiction writer and his pyaari Bindu, a quirky outspoken fun girl who dreams of becoming a singer. Interestingly, the film will also have plenty of legendary Hindi songs. “I think after watching the film, audience will feel very nostalgic. Especially for moments where they fall in love, childhood memories, singing on favourite songs, getting blank calls on landlines in 1990s when mobile phone was not as popular as today… I think we like to listen to old songs over the new one, till the new song goes into the list of old songs. It is lovely,” said the film’s leading man Ayushmann. Right from the fresh new pairing to the complete packaging, this film looks like it’s going to be a fun ride.

The film also features the powerhouse of talent Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays an important part in bringing Munna into the limelight. Talking about his role, Nawaz said, “I will be seen dancing in Munna Michael. I signed that film because I was scared of dancing and wanted to overcome that fear. So, I took it as a challenge. I have never danced on screen. In fact, I have never danced in my real life too.”

ALIEN: COVENANT Release date: May 19 This one is a bit of a cheat. It could easily have landed in the “Popcorn Fodder” section. Then again, the first Alien is widely considered a cinematic masterpiece and this chapter seems to follow the same pattern, with a new Ripley to boot. A colony ship lands in what seems to be an uncharted paradise. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Not only Ridley Scott – who launched the franchise – is back, H.G. Giger’s Xenomorph is the main threat and looks furious. Covenant features a lot of couples, adding emotional drama to the stress of an alien rampage.
Will it deliver?: It looks terrifying, but so did Prometheus.

Release date: June 28 One would be hard pressed to find a bad Edgar Wright movie. From Shaun of the Dead to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Wright regularly delivers entertaining experiences rooted on his deep knowledge of the cinematographic language. Baby Driver is his first film since he was unceremoniously booted from Ant-Man and is a doozy: The title character is the underworld’s best wheelman, but is considering leaving a life of crime because of a girl. His sinister boss (Kevin Spacey) agrees to let him go… in exchange for the proverbial “last job.” Double and triple crossings abound, as well as practical car stunts that put the Fast & Furious franchise to shame.
Will it deliver?: History points at yes.

Spring brings a plethora of movies worth watching. Some cater to your brain while others are better the least you think about them. These are the most intriguing titles of each group.
3 GENERATIONS Release date: May 5 Considering the top talent headlining this drama – Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, Elle Fanning – and that the film was shot two years ago, it’s surprising it didn’t open before (red flag?). Fanning is Ray, a teen transitioning from female to male. While her mother and grandma have come to terms with the idea, Ray still needs her biological dad to consent to hormone therapy. 3 Generations deals with so many hot-button issues, it feels calculated. Furthermore, it may have felt progressive in 2015, but other films and TV shows have leapfrogged it since.

THE BAD BATCH Release date: June 23 Three years ago, director Ana Lily Amirpour impressed with a vampire tale set in Iran (although shot in California) that cost less than half a million dollars and doubled the original investment. It was enough to get Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey to sign up for the filmmaker’s new movie, set in a post-apocalyptic Texas and built around a young woman who runs afoul of a community of cannibals. There is a fair amount of body horror, but also a critique to modern-day America’s penchant for excluding and expelling those who don’t fit the bill.
Will it deliver?: The tone of the film is reminiscent of The Neon Demon, a movie few saw and ever fewer liked.

THE MUMMY GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - VOL. 2 Release date: May 5 An unexpected success – even for Marvel standards – Guardians of the Galaxy demonstrated you don’t need to have the words “Star” or “Wars” in the title to deliver a satisfying space opera. The sequel features the original cast (one of them turned into a baby) plus Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. As enticing as it sounds, it feels overstuffed, without even mentioning the plot (the Guardians are pitted against one another and an entitled super race) or how does the movie fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Will it deliver?: With more solid characters than the Justice League’s entire roster, at least their interactions should be fun.
F
Release date: June 9 Speaking of cinematic worlds, Universal is trying to build one around classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man. The Mummy spearheads the first film of the would-be franchise, accompanied by Tom Cruise, no less. As per this version, the mummy’s thirst for revenge is a global threat and Cruise – who has been cursed by the eponymous creature – is the only one who can stop it. The approach seems closer to a standard action flick than the scarefests from yesteryear, and the fact Alex Kurtzman (the writer of Transformers, Star Trek, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2) is in charge doesn’t bode well for those hoping for subtlety and depth.
Will it deliver?: It’s a tall order, considering The Mummy was already remade successfully and Cruise is not the draw he once was.
WONDER WOMAN Release date: June 2 It’s impressive how DC/Warner’s desire to build a cinematic universe akin to Marvel’s continues to strike out. The last two outings (Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad) have failed at a most basic narrative level. Sure, they made money, but one could argue omnipresent marketing had more to do with box-office success than the movies themselves. Wonder Woman seems to be doing a couple of things right. The casting is impressive (Gal Gadot as the Amazon princess, Chris Pine as her love interest, Robin Wright as her mentor) and the director is – for the first time in the comic book realm – a woman, Patty Jenkins (Monster).
Will it deliver?: It can’t be as bad as the other ones… Can it?
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES Release date: May 26 Follow one solid movie and three terrible sequels, it’s surprising the pirate saga is still going. As if the challenge of decreasing returns wasn’t enough, Johnny Depp’s image problems may further damp the audience’s interest. Ironically, early reports from CinemaCon indicates that Dead Men is the best of the bunch: In the film, Jack Sparrow (Depp) is tasked with finding the Trident of Poseidon to defeat old-rival-turned-bloodthirsty-ghost, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). Former franchise staple Orlando Bloom is said to make a return.
Will it deliver?: It may be good, but won’t bring audiences back (fooled me three times…)

The TV show was Dark Angel, and the actress was Jessica Alba. “I became certified and she was my first client. Since that day personal training has become my business. It’s a career I love, it is ever evolving and it allows me to help others by bringing a level of fitness into their lives,” shares Braganza. A well-known celebrity trainer in Hollywood, Braganza’s A-List clients have included Halle Berry, Kate Beckinsale, Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Zac Efron, and Ryan Reynolds, among many others. her experience with the pair, she says, “It was great as it filmed in Vancouver and we used my mobile trailer on the job [a first-class, travelling fitness facility]. Work with them was easy, they both wanted to train hard.” Braganza is popularly known for developing the 3-2-1 Training Method. It consists of 3 segments of cardio, 2 segments of circuit strength training, and 1 segment of core for a fat burning, muscle toning workout. Lack of equipment or workout time on sets motivated this fitness expert to come up with the exercise program. “During my first years with Jessica Alba while filming the Dark Angel and on location for various movies such as Honey and Into the Blue, I often found we did not have much time to workout. Filming in remote locations was equally challenging, as equipment was limited, so I needed to find ways to use what we had around naturally,” explains Braganza. “I needed to make our workouts more effective so I decided to take all the elements I found important to an exercise program – cardio, strength training and core – and combine them in a time efficient program whether we had only 20 minutes to train or the luxury of an hour.” She also found ways to do a full program using only hand weights and a bench. “This has been my preferred method of training, sticking to the basics, using compound exercises, alternating upper and lower body, and natural alternatives to cardio machines such as climbing stairs, jump rope or jogging.” Braganza’s 3-2-1 method has spread worldwide, especially in India where she has multiple fitness collaborations. “I have released a book called Feel Fit, Look Fantastic in 321 by Harper Collins India [2014], and am currently getting ready to launch my franchise business, MyHomeFitness, with my partner in India, Sanghvi Brands,” mentions Vogue India’s 2014 Fitness Expert of the Year Award winner. The latest trends continue to be strength training, body weight training, small group training, and using technology to help monitor progress. What is your biggest achievement so far?
Returning to India as an adult and entering the market of my genes is my biggest achievement so far. How do you define fitness? How has it helped you grow?
Fitness to me means being healthy not only to look good but to be healthy for the future. Fitness has helped me tremendously, if it was not for being active as a child I would not have had the self confidence I have today as an adult. Having a love for a sport of gymnastics and excelling at it gave me faith in myself and what I could achieve. HOROSCOPE
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) MAY:
This month you’re focused on money, earnings and cash flow. This is actually a fortunate timing for you because with Venus in your sign, this happens to be the perfect month to buy wardrobe items (that’s because you will like what you see in the mirror). Meanwhile, fiery Mars will make you assertive and aggressive in all your negotiations, especially financial. This means you can trust your instincts in financial matters and shopping for big-ticket items.
JUNE: You hit the pavement running this month because the pace of your days is accelerating. That’s why this is not the time to stay at home. Embrace a busy schedule of errands, interactions with siblings and relatives plus short trips. Expect to do increased reading, writing and studying. You also have opportunities to boost your earnings; and certainly chances to buy beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. Be patient with increased chaos and activity at home, which might create discord. Remember: Patience is the antidote to anger.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) MAY: This is your birthday month, which means you are empowered! Not only are you pumped for action, you have the chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. As if by magic, you attract important people and favourable circumstances to you. Make the most of these opportunities. Meanwhile, you will spend more money this month; fortunately, you will work hard to earn money as well. This is not surprising because this is the best year in over a decade for you to improve your job or get a better job.
JUNE:
You find it easy to be charming and diplomatic with everyone this month, even though you are aggressive in your communications with others, especially siblings and relatives. You know what you want; and you’re willing to go after it. And yet, others will not complain. This month your focus on money intensifies; however, at a deeper level, you are wondering about your basic values in life.
for your year ahead, which will begin on your birthday. Nevertheless, fiery Mars is in your sign making you aggressive and forthright. In fact, you might want to get physical exercise to blow off some pent-up energy that is building up within you. This is a pleasant month to socialize with friends and groups.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) MAY: This is the only month all year when the Sun is at high noon in your chart acting like a spotlight on you. Furthermore, this spotlight is flattering. This means people in power and authority see you in very favourable terms. Obviously, this is the month to ask for what you want. This is also an excellent time to travel for pleasure and be involved with friends and groups. In fact, physical sports and competitive activities with others will rev your engines.
JUNE: Small wonder that all this powerful energy carries over into June by making you popular with others. Yes, everyone wants to see your face! In fact, others, especially people in authority, will seek you out to ask for your advice about how to make something look better or appear more attractive. In addition, bosses and authority types might strike up a romance. Tread carefully. Don’t threaten a solid relationship for a mere bonbon or temporary thrill. Be smart.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) MAY: Grab every opportunity to travel that comes your way this month because you need to get out of town and enjoy a change of scenery. Basically, you want to be stimulated by something exciting. You want adventure! You want to break free of boring routine. And why not? At least, do something where you can learn new information or study something new because this will satisfy your desire to broaden your world. Gifts, goodies and favours will come to you this month.
JUNE: Your desire to travel, especially for pleasure, still holds strong for you this month. In fact, a romance with someone from another culture or a different country might begin. Bosses and authority figures are impressed with you. This is a good month to make your pitch or ask for what you want. Meanwhile, a dispute with a friend might arise this month. You can dispel some of this energy by involvement in competitive activities with others or physical sports.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
MAY:
Lie low this month. Work alone or behind the scenes. Ideally, you need some solitude to do some serious thinking. This is because your year is coming to an end, which means your new personal year is about to begin. What do you want for yourself in your new year? Make goals with deadlines. Because Mars is in your sign this month, you will still be assertive with others. Meanwhile, Venus guarantees smooth relations with friends and groups.
MAY:
JUNE:
This is your hour, dear Gemini! Naturally you are pumped with energy because the Sun is in your sign. This is an auspicious time for you when things will tend to go your way. It is also appropriate to put your own needs first because it is your turn to replenish and restore yourself. You will be aggressive about spending money this month and also about earning it. Secret love affairs are taking place for some of you.
JUNE: This is a good month to ask for favours from others.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
MAY: You are popular this month! In addition, you will find
MAY:
that your interactions with others will benefit you. Share your hopes and dreams for the future with someone because their feedback will help you. Meanwhile, relations with bosses, parents and VIPs are warm and cozy. In fact, they are so cozy, some of you might strike up a romance with a boss or someone in a position of power. Indeed, many of you are dabbling in secret activities this month.
You are passionate and intense this month. Obviously you will be passionate in your intimate relations but also in discussions about inheritances, taxes, debt and shared property. Fortunately, with Venus opposite your sign, despite your intense approach to others, relations with others will still be congenial and diplomatic. Act on your urge to travel and explore opportunities in publishing, media, medicine, law and higher education. It’s also a good time to ask for a loan or mortgage or approach a financial institution. Because others are so warm and receptive to you, romantic relations will also be very affectionate. Travel anywhere you can because you want to do anything that will broaden your horizons and give you a feeling that you are getting more out of life. Do something different.
This month the Sun is opposite your sign, which means it is as far away from you as it gets all year. Since the Sun represents your energy, this means you will be tired. Therefore, respect your need for more rest. This polarized position of the Sun will also make you focus on partnerships and close friendships more than usual. Relations with coworkers and clients will be warm and mutually beneficial.
JUNE: This month you will strive to be the best that you Two opposing influences are at play this month. could be because you are on a self-improvement kick. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) MAY: Optimism and physical activity are survival issues for every Sagittarius. And this month in particular, you’re in the mood to turn over a new leaf. Basically, you want to be organized both at home and at work. Not only do you want to be organized, you want to exercise more and eat healthier. Act while you are motivated to do these things. Give yourself the right tools to do a good job to get better organized. Buy shelving, labels, file folders, cleaning equipment or whatever you need.
JUNE: Because you are focused on partnerships and close friendships this month, you will strive to find ways to improve these relationships. Meanwhile, get more sleep because you’re tired. Disputes over shared property, inheritances, taxes and debt might add to your fatigue. Fortunately, relations with people at work are positive and supportive. This is a popular year for you where your interactions with others benefit you.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) MAY: This is the month to kick up your heels and par-tay! Therefore, accept invitations to all social engagements, enjoy sports events, meet friends for lunch, dinner, coffee or Happy Hour, enjoy movies, theatre, musical performances, opera, museums, lectures and anything that stimulates you in an entertaining way. Sports events and playful activities with children will delight. Naturally, with this emphasis on fun and pleasure, romance and love affairs will flourish.
JUNE:
It’s time to get organized and feel that you are in control of your life and on top of your scene. Yet, fair Venus still wants you to party. You will still have fun this month. However, fiery Mars is opposite your sign this month, which means it’s easy to be impatient with partners and close friends. Nevertheless, these are people you have to get along with so don’t say anything you will later regret. Be smart.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) MAY:
Home, family and your private life are your primary focus this month. In fact, many of you will welcome a chance to cocoon at home and relax among familiar surroundings and possessions you love. Your involvement with a parent will be significant. Many of you still want to be active in a playful way, especially in sports, the arts and anything to do with romance and love affairs. You will also appreciate the beauty of your daily surroundings and just how much love there is in your life.
JUNE:
As your appreciation for your daily surroundings grows, and you realize how much people care for you, you will definitely want to trip the light fantastic and enjoy parties, social occasions, picnics, the theatre, the arts and anything where you feel joy and pleasure. At heart, you want to feel free to express yourself without fear or apology. Opportunities to redecorate or buy beautiful things for your home will please you.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) MAY: This is a busy, fast-paced month for you. Your schedule is packed with errands, conversations with others, especially siblings and relatives, short trips and increased reading, writing and studying. Go with the flow. Be patient with family members because chaos and stress at home might occur. It looks like you will engage in some shopping therapy buying beautiful things for yourself and loved ones.
JUNE: This is a lovely month for your sign. Primarily, you will be focused on home and family, but you will also want to entertain at home. The stress of last month has now disappeared, which makes you want to cocoon at home in pleasant surroundings. Get out and enjoy the company of others because all your relations with daily contacts (especially siblings) will be affectionate, smooth and supportive. Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: The medical system is not flexible; the wait time for appointments is not satisfactory. Getting child care is also not easy and a bit expensive too.
Advice for immigrants: Canada is a country which turns your dreams into reality. Enjoy the hospitality the country offers and in return do not indulge in activities which pose as a threat to the country.
Memories of your homeland: I come from Kerala which is known as ‘Gods own country’ as it has lots of greenery. Praveen comes from Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu) which is referred to as the ‘Queen of Hills,’ it’s a land of coffee and tea plantations. By God’s grace we landed in Vancouver which is no way behind in terms of scenic beauty and greenery but we miss the celebrations of our festivals like Onam and Vishu a lot. We miss our food and culture too.
