What was your reaction when you heard the news of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation?

I was not very surprised. The pressure on him to resign had been mounting for some time. His low approval ratings have little to do with specific policies; he is not the first PM to suffer a significant drop in approval ratings following a long period in power.

Calls have been mounting for PM Trudeau’s resignation for some time now. Do you feel that if he had resigned earlier, it would have served the Liberal Party better?

Perhaps, but not necessarily. Had he resigned soon after the 2021 election, the party would likely be in better shape today. Once his approval ratings started to sink to historic lows, it was already too late.

Who should people watch in the leadership race, and how long will it take?

It will likely be shorter than the Liberal Party would like because of Parliament's looming March 24th resumption. It is hard to imagine that a new leader is not in place before then. I believe the new leader will be either Mark Carney or Chrystia Freeland. There are other viable contenders, but it is hard to imagine any of them overtaking the two presumptive frontrunners. Christy Clark’s interest in the job is noteworthy in British Columbia because she is a former premier in this province. Her ascension to the Liberal leadership could combat the narrative that the Liberal Party caters to Quebec and Ontario.

What is the biggest challenge for the new Liberal leader, and what must the party do to prepare for the next election? Could we see an early election?

An election before October is very likely. The opposition parties have made it clear they plan to bring down the government through a non-confidence motion when the House resumes on March 24th. This would put us on track for an April or early May election. The Liberal Party is one of the most successful political parties among liberal democracies, and it has won elections by practicing a brokerage or “catch-all” style of politics. Part of that strategy involves shifting its ideology to fit the political mood. The Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau presents a left-of-center image to the public, focusing on expensive national initiatives, such as $10-a-day daycare and pharmacare, and progressive social issues. Carney presents an attractive option to many because he could be sold as fiscally responsible, and he has not expressed views on social issues that could be construed as too progressive or ‘woke.’ His challenge is his lack of experience in retail politics. On the other hand, Freeland has the challenge of distancing herself from Trudeau. Her resignation and statement demonstrated her independence, which many Canadians noted. The key to her success is whether she can focus the public on her triumphs–such as the NAFTA renegotiation during Trump 1.0.

DARPAN

DR. SANJAY JERAM

with Trump 1.0. His detractors will highlight the numerous integrity issues that marred his government, such as the WE charity scandal and SNC-Lavalin affair, and that he is leaving the country with a massive deficit and cost-of-living crisis. Political legacies are tricky. We tend to focus on the bad in the immediate aftermath but see the good in the long term.

In your opinion, what was PM Trudeau’s most significant failure during his tenure?

His failure to reform Canada’s electoral system. Shifting Canada to a proportional electoral system was a cornerstone of his 2015 campaign. Single-member plurality perversely incentivizes many Canadians to ‘strategically vote’ when their preferred candidate or party cannot earn a plurality in their riding. It also often leads to majority governments who receive less than 50% of the popular vote.

PM Trudeau’s leadership was marred by confrontation with India. Do you feel we have turned the page with his resignation regarding Canada/India relations?

It is difficult to say because Canada’s relationship with India is not currently high on the agenda, given the concrete and existential threats posed by Trump 2.0.

Trump’s negotiating tactics are wellknown, and he has stated he would not use military force to annex Canada. He perceives a trade imbalance between Canada and the US, and it is our government's job to demonstrate the value of the special economic relationship. Most economists and observers agree that tariff walls would harm both countries.

What’s PM Trudeau’s legacy?

That depends on who you ask. His supporters will point to his pandemic spending, which many economists praised for staving off a deep recession and preventing widespread impoverishment. They will also point out that the Canada Child Benefit started a downward trend in child poverty, that his $10-a-day daycare plan has helped families cope with rising expenses and enabled many parents to remain or re-enter the labor force, and that he dealt admirably

With the House of Commons prorogued until March 24th, some key Liberal legislation may not pass, such as The Online Harms Act or increasing the capital gains tax inclusion rate. Will these pieces of legislation die on the order paper?

Yes, these Bills will have to be reintroduced upon the resumption of Parliament. If the government falls and we have an election, a Conservative majority government is the probable outcome, and that government is unlikely to re-introduce these pieces of legislation.

How risky is the road for Canada/US relations, especially when there has been talk of Canada becoming a 51st state?

Canada is experiencing economic uncertainty, but there is no need to panic. Trump’s negotiating tactics are well-known, and he has stated he would not use military force to annex Canada. He perceives a trade imbalance between Canada and the United States, and it is our government's job to demonstrate the value of the special economic relationship. Most economists and observers agree that tariff walls would harm both countries.

What message would you like to share with our readers during such an uncertain time in federal politics?

Canada’s democracy remains robust, and we continue to have one of the highest living standards in the world. However, we should be wary of increasing polarization and vigilant about educating our youth to seek out legitimate sources of information about politics.

Sima Taparia, better known as "Sima Aunty" from Netflix’s hit series Indian Matchmaking, is one of India’s most sought-after matchmakers. Based in Mumbai, she has been connecting families and individuals worldwide for two decades. With a career that began in her own family, Taparia has transformed what many see as a traditional practice into a globally recognized and modernized profession. Her unique ability to blend old-world values with contemporary expectations has made her a trusted figure in the matchmaking world, offering her clients not just partnerships but enduring relationships.

Taparia’s journey into matchmaking began decades ago when she successfully matched her sister’s marriage. This pivotal experience, coupled with her innate passion for meeting and connecting with people, propelled her to take up matchmaking professionally in 2005. Taparia shares, “Since childhood, I have always been a social and outgoing person. These qualities are essential for a matchmaker, as they help me connect with clients on a personal level who then open their hearts.”

Her work is not limited to matchmaking; Taparia meticulously handles every aspect of the process, from collecting documents and assessing compatibility to orchestrating pre-wedding functions. Her services cater to clients across cultures and countries, providing them with wide-ranging options. She explains, “We ensure both sides are aligned before moving forward, even down to matching horoscopes if required.”

One of the most surprising but memorable moments in Taparia’s career involved a particularly demanding client—a mother seeking a bride for her son with specific criteria, including height and hair length. “It was a challenge with such odd criteria, but I fulfilled it,” Taparia recalls.

Redefining Matchmaking SIMA TAPARIA

In an era dominated by dating apps, Taparia remains rooted in traditional matchmaking while embracing technology as a supplementary tool. “I believe in technology, but I’m not a slave to it,” she says. “Arranged marriages bring two families together, provid ing a support system during misunderstand ings. Dating apps lack this familial foundation. However, it really depends from person to person in terms of which mode they’d like to proceed with.”

Moreover, Sima Taparia curated UrbanMatch, an app that seamlessly blends ad vanced technology with personalized match making to revolutionize how people connect and find love. A standout feature of Match is its unique approach to fostering deeper, focused connections by allowing users to interact with only three matches at a time. Additionally, Sima hosts singles mixers across the globe, creating vibrant in-person oppor tunities for individuals to meet and explore potential relationships.

Taparia, who recently celebrated 41 years of marriage with her husband, Anup, exemplifies the lasting bonds she helps create. She emphasizes the importance of decisive ac tion when choosing a partner, “Clients should decide within 2-3 months. Focus on the person, not the city they come from. In today’s world, distances are no longer a barrier.”

When asked about advice for individuals stuck in repetitive patterns while searching for a partner, Taparia highlighted the importance of flexibility, “Youngsters today are very choosy and have fantasies that are hard to fulfill. I advise clients to look for a partner who meets 60-70% of their criteria. Together, they can make it 100%. After all, variety is the spice of life.”

Through her work, Sima Taparia continues to bridge generational gaps, blending timeless traditions with the evolving aspirations of modern individuals. Her philosophy is clear: love and compatibility are cultivated through understanding, compromise, and mutual respect—a sentiment that resonates across cultures and time.

Food is about bringing people together, and I want my desserts to reflect that.” “

In the bustling heart of Surrey, British Columbia, Mann & Co

Bakeshop has carved out its niche, blending South Asian flavors with North American flair. At the forefront is Jujhar Singh Mann, a talented pastry chef whose journey from hobby baker to award-winning artisan is as inspiring as the desserts he creates. Jujhar’s love for baking started early. “I’ve always loved being in the kitchen,” he says. “When I was a kid, I’d spend hours cooking with my mom or glued to baking shows, dreaming of making something magical.” This passion eventually led him to step away from a traditional career path and into the world of pastry. What began as a way to unwind during his marketing studies at Simon Fraser University quickly transformed into a thriving business. “I started baking for fun, and before I knew it, people were reaching out for custom orders. That’s when I realized—this could be something bigger,” he recalls.

Mann & Co Bakeshop opened its doors in December 2022 and has since become a favorite for its unique fusion of flavors. Whether it’s their signature Cardamom Cake, luxurious Rose Kulfi Opera Cake, or vibrant Mango Lassi Cake, every dessert tells a story of cultural connection and in-

novation. Jujhar has also mastered the art of inclusivity by offering eggless and vegetarian options to cater to a diverse clientele. “Food is about bringing people together, and I want my desserts to reflect that,” he says.

Jujhar’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but he credits his family’s unwavering support for his success. “My parents saw how passionate I was and stood by me every step of the way,” he shares. “They even helped me get my first studio space, and that’s when things really took off.” With their encouragement, Jujhar pursued advanced training under world-renowned chefs Amaury Guichon and Chef Jean Michel MOF, experiences that elevated his craft to new heights. At just 25, Jujhar’s message to young minds remains simple: “Whatever your dream is, go for it. And if it’s your child’s dream, support them. You never know what magic can come out of it.”

His hard work has paid off in the form of national recognition. Jujhar first gained attention on Food Network Canada’s Great Chocolate Showdown and recently won Netflix’s Is It Cake? Holiday! “Being on these shows was a dream come true,” he says. “It’s one thing to bake in your kitchen, but competing on a global stage pushes you to another level.”

As much as he loves creating jaw-dropping desserts, Jujhar remains deeply connected to his roots. “I’m proud to bring South Asian flavors to the forefront in a modern, approachable way,” he says. His bakery’s menu is a testament to that pride, blending tradition with creativity to deliver desserts that are both nostalgic and delectable.

In the world of pastry, Jujhar Mann is proving that the best recipes mix heart, heritage, and a dash of daring. He’s turning dough into dreams, crafting desserts that aren’t just sweet—they’re inspiring. After all, who wouldn’t want a slice of that life?

My love for movies started as a child. Films are not just entertainment—they’re a way to connect, dream, and reflect on the human experience.

NAVEEN CHATHAPURAM

Naveen A. Chathapuram is a storyteller, director, and producer whose journey from Coimbatore, India, to Hollywood exemplifies the magic of chasing dreams. With a career spanning diverse roles in the entertainment industry, Naveen has produced and directed films that captivate audiences worldwide. From producing Ca$h, which featured a young Chris Hemsworth alongside Sean Bean, to his award-winning directorial work in The Last Victim and now American Warrior, starring Danny Trejo, Naveen is redefining what it means to tell stories that transcend borders and genres.

Finding His Voice Through Cinema

Naveen’s early years in Kerala shaped his storytelling instincts. Influenced by his father’s love for movies, he grew up watching a mix of Indian classics and Western epics. “My father had a deep passion for films. He’d take me to see everything—from Satyajit Ray’s masterpieces to larger-than-life epics like Lawrence of Arabia,” he shares.

When his family moved to the United States at the age of twelve, Naveen found himself drawn to the Hollywood style of filmmaking. “Growing up in two different cultures gave me a unique perspective,” he explains. “Indian cinema taught me the power of emotion, while Hollywood showed me the importance of precision and pacing.”

This fusion of influences is evident in his work, where heartfelt storytelling meets cinematic excellence.

Collaborating with Hollywood Legends

Naveen’s Hollywood breakthrough came as a producer for Ca$h, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Sean Bean. “Chris was magnetic even then. You could tell he was destined for something big,” Naveen

His directorial debut, The Last Victim, saw him working with stars like Ali Larter, Ron Perlman, and Ralph Ineson. Praised as a neo-Western thriller, the film earned recognition from none other than Stephen King, who called it a “blood-thirsty thriller.”

For American Warrior, Naveen took on the challenge of directing a high-energy action drama featuring Danny Trejo. “Danny is an absolute legend,” he says. “His charisma and energy on set were unmatched, and he brought so much depth to his role.”

The Stories That Drive Him

For Naveen, every project begins with a desire to connect. “I always ask myself: What do I want people to take away from this? What do I want them to feel?” he says.

In his recent release, the focus is on resilience and survival. “It’s a film about fighting for what matters most,” he explains. “It’s action-packed, but at its core, it’s deeply human.”

Embracing His Identity

As an Indian-born filmmaker in Hollywood, Naveen sees himself as a bridge between cultures. “Cinema has the power to transcend boundaries, and I feel lucky to tell stories that reflect my heritage while being universal,” he shares.

He hopes to inspire a new generation of filmmakers. “Representation matters,” he says. “I want young people from all backgrounds to see that their stories have value and their voices deserve to be heard.”

Learning From The Best

Working with seasoned actors like Danny Trejo, Ron Perlman, and Ali Larter has been an invaluable experience for Naveen. “Every actor brings something unique to the table. It’s fascinating to watch how they interpret the story and bring it to life,” he says.

Building A Legacy

Looking ahead, Naveen is focused on creating films that leave a lasting impact. “I want to continue telling stories that challenge me as a filmmaker and connect with audiences around the world,” he says.

Beyond his own work, he’s passionate about mentoring aspiring storytellers. “There’s so much talent out there waiting to be discovered. I want to do my part to nurture that talent and create opportunities for diverse voices.”

On dealing with success, he elaborates, “I've come to believe in treating both success and failure with a sense of detachment. While success feels good and brings a natural high, over the years, I've learned not to get too attached to it—you could lose judgment or rest on your laurels—which could affect the quality of your work. It's equally important to bounce back from the lows of failure and focus on the lessons learned. I've learned that both success and failure are temporary; what matters is what lies ahead in your path.

My mantra is simple: stay open, stay eager, and approach each project without preconceptions or expectations. Show up consistently, regardless of what's ahead or how you feel. Do the work and let it go.”

A Life Dedicated to Storytelling

For the all-rounder talent, filmmaking isn’t just a profession—it’s a calling. “Cinema is the ultimate art form,” he says. “It’s a way to bring people together, to share experiences, and to spark conversations that matter.”

With his latest work, American Warrior, and a career defined by creativity and resilience, Naveen is a filmmaker on the rise—a storyteller whose journey will keep you on the edge of your seat just as much as the stories he tells.

Employment Outlook

OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES IN BC AND CANADA

The employment landscape in British Columbia (BC) and Canada is undergoing dynamic transformations shaped by economic shifts, evolving labor market demands, and demographic changes. As we move into

2025, a comprehensive outlook reveals both opportunities and challenges for job seekers, particularly for immigrants, underrepresented groups, and youth entering the workforce.

A Shifting Labor Market

In 2024, Canada's unemployment rate reflected a relatively stable but competitive job market. However, industries

such as health care, technology, and skilled trades face significant labor shortages. BC, as one of the fastest-growing provinces, remains a hub for immigrants and newcomers, whose contributions are vital for economic growth.

“Through Canada’s Labour Market Transfer Agreements and the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan, BC delivers a comprehensive suite of employment services and skills training programs to meet labor market needs,” notes the Ministry of Post-Secondary and Future Skills. One standout initiative is Find Your Path, a career guidance service connecting individuals to post-secondary programs aligned with their career goals.

Addressing Barriers for Immigrants

BC invests $6 million annually in the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program to help people new to BC find employment that matches their pre-arrival skills, education and experience. Immigrants play a critical role in meeting labor demands, yet systemic challenges persist, especially around foreign credential recognition. "Too many skilled immigrants arrive in Canada only to face barriers to working in their trained fields," says Vandna Joshi, Director of Social Entrepreneurship at DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society.

DIVERSEcity's Coast Capital Credential Program for Newcomer Women, set to relaunch in 2025, offers grants of up to $2,000 to help immigrant women navigate relicensing. Joshi emphasizes, "Programs like this are vital in addressing the hurdles professional immigrants face, particularly in high-demand sectors like health care."

Similarly, PICS Society works to bridge gaps for immigrants and other marginalized groups. "At PICS Society, we regularly review and revise our service delivery models and keep trying to add new program components to our settlement and employment-related services to cater to the emerging needs of the immigrant population, especially underrepresented groups, to help

them acquire or enhance skills to meet current labor market demands and deal with various social challenges to make them feel supported in their endeavor for social integration and gainful labor market attachment," says Dr. Raminder Pal Singh Kang, Director of Settlement and Integration Services at PICS Society.

Tackling Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment remains a concern, with many young people navigating the transition from education to meaningful employment. At DIVERSEcity, programs like Future Leaders and RBC Start it Right! focus on equipping diverse youth with education and job readiness skills. "These programs address the needs of youth not currently in school or the workforce, preparing them for educational and employment opportunities," Joshi explains. Additionally, micro-credential

"At PICS

Society, we regularly review and revise our service delivery models and keep trying to add new program components to our settlement and employmentrelated services to cater to the emerging needs of the immigrant population to help them acquire or enhance skills to meet current labor market demands and deal with various social challenges."

Society

programs through the DIVERSEcity Skills Training Centre and partnerships with WorkBC Centres provide shortterm training in high-demand skills, enabling young people to enter the workforce with confidence.

Holistic Support for Vulnerable Groups

A unique aspect of employment programs in BC is their holistic approach to addressing social barriers. DIVERSEcity’s HEAL for Work Program and SAHARA Employment Program provide not only job training but also counseling and life skills support.

“These programs uplift participants holistically, addressing the social challenges that impact their ability to find work,” says Joshi. This comprehensive model ensures that individuals facing multiple barriers—such as survivors of violence or asylum seekers—are set up for long-term success.

Supporting Emerging Entrepreneurs

In response to economic and social instability, many individuals turn to self-employment. Programs like DIVERSEcity’s Diverse Entrepreneurs Business Incubator, supported by TD Bank, are designed to guide emerging entrepreneurs through the business planning process. "Seeing individuals go from a simple idea to launching a product or business is truly inspiring," Joshi adds.

Self-employment opportunities have become particularly attractive in BC’s high-cost living environment, where flexibility and innovation often provide a viable alternative to traditional employment paths.

Government Investments in Skills Training

BC’s quadrupled funding for newcomer services—from $6 million to $25.6 million—reflects the province’s dedication to creating pathways for meaningful employment. These funds support programs like WorkBC, which connect individuals to training and job opportunities tailored

Amarpal Singh

to their skills and aspirations. Moreover, initiatives like the StrongerBC Future Ready Action Plan are equipping workers with micro-credentials and advanced training in fields such as technology and green energy, ensuring BC’s workforce remains competitive on a global scale.

Undoubtedly, Canada’s labor market is projected to experience notable growth in 2025, driven by evolving demographics and rapid technological progress. Key industries poised for significant job expansion include:

Healthcare: With an aging population, the demand for healthcare professionals will continue to rise.

Information Technology: The ongoing digital transformation will create opportunities for experts in fields such as software development and cybersecurity.

Construction: Efforts to modernize infrastructure and address housing shortages will generate roles for engineers, skilled tradespeople, and project managers.

Tech Sector: Highly sought-after roles in 2025 are expected to include full-stack developers, data scientists, data analysts, tech product managers, and DevOps engineers.

To address workforce needs and enhance youth employment, the Canadian government is actively investing in initiatives like the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, aimed at equipping young workers with the skills needed to meet industry demands.

On the financial front, average salary increase budgets across Canada are projected to be 3.5% in 2025, reflecting a slight dip from the 3.9% average seen in 2024. This trend highlights the ongoing adjustments in compensation as industries adapt to economic conditions.

Of course, from a bird’s eye perspective, Canada’s workforce is undergoing transformative changes driven by technology, demographics, and sustainability:

1. Technological Integration is reshaping industries, with advancements in AI and automation putting jobs at risk. However, this shift creates new roles requiring skills like problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and managing AI systems.

2. The Gig Economy is expanding, with workers expected to engage in freelancing or contract roles. Flexibility appeals to many, but challenges like income instability drive calls for portable benefits to support gig workers.

3. Demographic Shifts are also key, as immigration fuels labor force growth while retiring Baby Boomers increase demand for healthcare and social services. Employers must embrace diversity and inclusivity to meet these changes.

4. Green Jobs are becoming a reality given the push for sustainability, with investments in renewable energy and clean technology driving demand for skills in environmental science and green engineering.

5. Evolving Skills like digital literacy, adaptability, and critical thinking are becoming a part of work environments. Organizations are prioritizing reskilling to ensure workers can navigate these shifts, making lifelong learning vital to Canada’s labor market success.

Overall, the employment outlook for BC and Canada in 2025 is one of cautious optimism. While challenges like labor shortages and systemic barriers for immigrants persist, innovative programs and community-driven initiatives provide hope for a more inclusive and robust workforce.

Although significant challenges persist, particularly the ongoing issue of high housing costs that continue to strain affordability for many Canadians, the recent reductions in interest rates, coupled with sustained population growth driven by immigration and natural increases, create a promising backdrop for economic revitalization and renewed prosperity in the coming years.

As Joshi aptly summarizes, “Our ability to support the most vulnerable with compassion and empowerment reflects who we are as a community and as British Columbians.” The road ahead requires collaboration between government, community organizations, and individuals to ensure that every worker— regardless of background—can thrive in BC’s evolving labor market.

We always believed that with hard work and heart, anything is possible. It wasn’t just about hockey—it was about teaching Arshdeep to face challenges with courage and to embrace every moment, win or lose."

Harvinder & Kuldip Bains

Proud Parents of Arshdeep Singh Bains

Immigrating from Punjab, India, in 1982, Kuldip Singh Bains and Harvinder Kaur Bains left home to build a fulfilling life in Canada. Settling in Surrey, British Columbia, the family grew, with their kids taking a special interest in hockey, among other games. And that’s where one could see a young Arshdeep metamorphose into the Arshdeep Bains we know now – the fourth Punjabi player to suit up for an NHL game, playing for his home team, the Vancouver Canucks.

Arshdeep’s journey into ice hockey began with his dad taking his older brothers for a fun game at the rink. The rink soon became his favorite spot as he tagged along and eventually fell in love with the sport. With no professional hockey background, both Kuldip and Harvinder’s unwavering support was enough to become the cornerstone of Arshdeep’s success in ice hockey. They embraced the challenges of raising a child in competitive sports, making their way

through rigorous training schedules to emotional highs and lows.

Kuldip soon became a regular face at hockey games and practice nights, driving Arshdeep to countless tournaments while also honing his puck-passing skills in their backyard. Harvinder always prioritized emotional support, ensuring that Arshdeep’s love for the game was always at the forefront. That’s when we let him get into his groove while always assuring him of our presence in his life, whatever the outcome.”

As Arshdeep advanced from local leagues to the Western Hockey League and eventually to the professional stage, his parents, too, evolved. Kuldip

Gurinder & Kamaljit Badwal

Proud Parents of Jeevan Singh Badwal

Kamaljit Singh Badwal and Gurinder Kaur Badwal, proud parents of three young athletic children, have skillfully aced the task of nurturing their kids’ passion while also balancing the complexities of life and family. Based in Surrey, British Columbia, the Badwals’ love for soccer is deep-rooted. A soccer player himself, Kamaljit immigrated from India when he was all of 16, bringing with him an immense appreciation for the sport and a culture that values teamwork and resilience. Growing up in Prince George, Gurinder was always a fan of the outdoorsy life and wanted her kids to stay active in any sport they chose.

Hence, they began Jeevan Singh Badwal’s journey early. At just three months old, Gurinder introduced her eldest to swimming, followed by Sportball at 18 months old, and soccer by age four—which is why Jeevan today plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and was named the Whitecaps U16 Player of the Year in 2022. “One of his soccer coaches called us, saying he wanted Jeevan on his team,” Gurinder recalls. While their

aim as parents was simply to keep the kid active and explore his potential across various sports, Jeevan’s innate talent and passion for soccer shined through.

The Badwals’ approach to parenting a sportsperson has been one of setting clear expectations from the start while also fostering a sense of independence and responsibility. Kamaljit emphasized the importance of early preparation, reasonable expectations, and candid conversations: “Early on, we took Jeevan to multiple soccer matches in Europe and Canada to let him feel what it takes and how life can be for him in the future.” Gurinder makes sure the family thrives on open dialogue, whether discussing sports, studies, or life, “We never hide our own challenges from the kids and maintain a clear, open channel of communication at all times.”

In a world where social media amplifies both praise and criticism, Kamaljit and Gurinder focus on setting firm boundaries and staying positive. “As a mom, I get riled up seeing the negativity on social media, but Kamaljit is often the

A &Q

How did you ensure that your child’s mental health is prioritized, especially in the high-pressure world of sports?

We reassure Jeevan that we’re always there for him and reflect that in our actions every time. He hates driving to a game, so we make it a point to drop him, irrespective of our schedules. We listen to him talk about his performance, not necessarily giving him feedback on each move, but just hearing him out and make him feel heard at all times.

Q Q Q Q

What has been your biggest success as a parent in this journey?

Hearing Jeevan’s coach say he’s one of the best kids he trained—not just as a soccer player but as a person—was a proud

moment. It affirmed that we’re raising him right.

What advice would you give other parents raising young athletes?

Be their best friend and biggest support er. Provide opportunities, trust them to make their own mistakes, and celebrate their journey without overloading them with expectations..

Believe in God and believe in yourself. With the support of your family and those around you, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. You will be the best at whatever you apply your heart to.

calming influence in our lives. It helps to have a partner I can fall back on and take on anything as a unit.”

With three kids, all interested in varied sports, there’s a lot to do for Kamaljit and Gurinder. “I had driven 43,000 kilometers on my new car within a year, driving each of the three kids to different training centers and tournaments, and I wouldn't have it any other way,” chuckles Kamaljit. They thank their extended family and a close-knit community for their unwavering support and assistance. “Being a South Asian, I always had our family and friends around to take care of the kids, and that has been a huge blessing,” adds Gurinder.

A strong faith in God, taking on each challenge together as one, and having an open communication line both ways is what the Badwals believe helps Jeevan and his siblings shine in the world of sports. “We don’t just want to raise a successful sportsperson, but a great individual with a strong sense of compassion for the people around him.” And Jeevan Singh Badwal’s career and personality proves that time and again.

Wrestling isn’t just a sport in our family— it’s a legacy. Watching Amar carry it forward with humility and determination makes us incredibly proud.”

- Balbir Dhesi

Gurbax & Balbir Dhesi

Proud Parents of Amarveer Singh Dhesi

Amarveer Singh Dhesi, better known as Amar Dhesi, has made waves in the world of wrestling, representing Canada in the men’s 125 kg freestyle wrestling event at the 2024 Summer Olympics and claiming gold in the same category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Behind Amar’s remarkable journey and multiple tournament victories is the steadfast support and dedication of his parents, Balbir and Gurbax Dhesi.

Balbir immigrated to Canada in 1976 with a vision that extended beyond his personal success. The same year, he founded the Khalsa Wrestling Club in Surrey, which has produced numerous provincial, national and international champions till date. Wrestling wasn’t just a sport for the Dhesi family—it was a legacy. Amar grew up in an environment where wrestling was part of everyday life. “I took him to the club when he was still in diapers,” Balbir shares. “He was never a stranger to the mat because he grew up

watching his family wrestle.”

For Balbir, Amar’s journey is a continuation of a family tradition that started with his father and included his elder son, a Youth Olympian. Amar’s natural talent was evident early on, but it was his own relentless discipline and the guidance of his family that helped him achieve greatness. “Both of my sons would wake up at 5 AM to train before school, then return to the club for practice after classes,” Balbir recalls.

A former Commonwealth Games and Pan-Am Championships gold-medalist, Amar Dhesi is a 2-time Olympian and was the only returning member of Canada’s 2024 Olympic Team after competing at the Tokyo Games. He is now an officer with the Vancouver Police Department.

Gurbax, the pillar of emotional support, emphasizes the role of community in their journey. “Our joint family and close-knit group of wrestling friends gave us the strength to navigate this path

with ease,” she explains. While the journey required sacrifices, such as turning down certain work opportunities and retiring early, Balbir and Gurbax never wavered in their commitment to their sons.

Their parenting philosophy is rooted in trust, communication, and balance. “We made sure to let them experience wins and losses equally. That’s how you grow—by managing your emotions and learning from every experience,” Balbir shares, reflecting their commitment to raising mentally and physically strong sports kids, ready to face any challenge that might come their way.

How did you ensure that your child’s mental health is prioritized, especially in the high-pressure world of sports?

We surrounded Amar with a community of support—family, friends, and fellow wrestlers. Practicing alongside his brother and cousins kept him grounded, and we’ve always been open about sharing challenges and triumphs as a family.

Q Q Q Q

What has been your biggest success as a parent in this journey?

Seeing both of our sons grow into respectful, hardworking individuals who honor their family and community. Amar’s success on the mat is a bonus.

Spend time with your kids. Be present for their practices and competitions and show genuine interest in their passions. Encourage them to follow their interests and provide everything they need to succeed.

Hard work is the key—whether in sports or life. Stay disciplined, respect your com munity, and always strive to be a good person. Success will follow.

“Success isn’t measured by trophies but by the values you instill in your children. Watching Jujhar grow into a self-sufficient, good-hearted individual who values family is our greatest achievement.”

- Sukhjinder Khaira

Komal & Sukhjinder Khaira

Proud Parents of Jujhar Khaira

Sukhjinder and Komal Khaira immigrated to Canada as children, growing up in Clearwater and Victoria, British Columbia, respectively. In the 1980s, they were prominent sports players themselves, volleyball and basketball mostly, and watching them play is what spiked Jujhar’s interest in sports. Their athletic background laid a solid foundation for the values they instilled in Jujhar and his brother early on. Jujhar Khaira, the third NHL player of Punjabi descent, currently plays for the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL and has represented the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Minnesota Wild in the NHL.

The Khairas’ journey as parents of young champions began with introducing their children to different sports to keep them active and engaged. While ice hockey wasn’t a game they had played before, they quickly noticed Jujhar’s affinity for the sport. “He took a liking to ice hockey and absolutely enjoyed his power skating classes,” Komal recalls. From that point onwards, their encouragement and support became a constant throughout

Jujhar’s sporting journey.

Raising not one but three athletes came with its challenges. Both Sukhjinder and Komal prioritized creating a strong mental and emotional foundation for all their kids, taking in important advice from a coach: “You don’t have to talk about the game until 24 hours have passed.”

Jujhar’s younger brother, Sahvan Khaira, plays professional ice hockey, too, so dinner table conversations were almost always about sports. But Komal made it a point to separate the pressures of the game from everyday life and ensured they had moments of lighthearted fun between games and hectic training schedules.

Jujhar credits his parents for his excellence in sports. In an earlier conversation, he thanked them for the work they put into nurturing his sports dreams. “Running three kids around for different activities wasn’t easy, but we relied on each other. It is more teamwork and time management than anything else,” says Komal. As both of them played professionally, they understood the balance required when it came to guiding their

A &Q

How did you ensure that your child’s mental health is prioritized, especially in the high-pressure world of sports?

We always checked in with Jujhar after the game, not necessarily about the game itself, but to ask how he’s feeling. We stay open to discussing hockey when he wants to, and we’re always ready to listen and offer feedback when he asks.

Q Q Q Q

What has been your biggest success as a parent in this journey?

Our biggest success is seeing all our kids grow into self-sufficient, good-hearted individuals who value family. Jujhar wants to be home, spend time with us, and has great faith in God, which means the world to us.

What advice would you give other parents raising young athletes?

Give them opportunities to try different sports, let them have fun, and follow their lead. Always be present and recognize their needs, while also respecting their space.

What’s a message you’d like to share with young athletes pursuing their dreams?

Never give up, and always be a good person first. The same people you meet on the way up will be there on the way down.

kids while also allowing them to make mistakes: “We didn’t know a lot about hockey, but we noticed his passion for the game, and luckily he knew what was needed of him. We placed our faith in him and supported him in every way.”

As South Asian parents, Sukhjinder and Komal are grateful for the family they had around, which helped Jujhar and his siblings to become the people they are today: “His dad was his role model to become a good individual with a strong sense of integrity and family, and the community at Cloverdale was extremely supportive of Jujhar, which made his journey even more seamless. Our parents taught us to raise kids a certain way when it came to sports, and that helped us a lot.” For the Khairas, success is not the number of trophies lined up at home but more about the values they’ve instilled in their children. Sukhjinder and Komal’s collective journey has been one of teamwork and perseverance, an attribute key to raising champions at home.

Be fully involved in your child’s journey. Take the time to understand their sport, their challenges, and their needs. Show them that their dreams matter to you.”

Atinder & BillenHarjit

Proud Parents of Helena, Jeenat and Angel Billen

Helena, Jeenat, and Angel Billen are three remarkable sisters who have made their mark as weightlifters, proudly representing Canada on national and international platforms. Born and raised in Surrey, British Columbia, the sisters have turned what started as family training sessions in their basement into a story of grit, discipline, and success. Driving their incredible success in the sport are their parents, Harjit and Atinder Billen, whose dedication and parenting approach have been instrumental in shaping their daughters’ journey.

Harjit, who immigrated to Canada from Raipur Dabba, Punjab, in 1993, grew up wrestling in national tournaments and playing kabaddi. He soon started the Rustom Wrestling Club in Surrey and has trained countless young wrestlers since then. His wife, Atinder, from Phagwara, Punjab, fortunately shared his passion for sports and together, instilled a drive for hard work in their children from a young age. “Sports is like

school,” Harjit says. “If you want your kids to excel, you have to guide them, push them, and stay involved every step of the way.”

Their weightlifting story began when Helena overheard her father discussing wrestling and expressed her interest. Harjit’s search for the right platform in Surrey at the time led him to weightlifting. “I trusted the Lions Weightlifting Club because I knew the coach from back in India,” he recalls. “Helena started training at 13, followed by Jeenat at 9 and Angel at 6.” Helena too played an important role when it came to training her younger sisters as she would often push them to do better and hone their skills.

For the Billens, weightlifting is not merely an activity, but a way to impart their family values. “We strongly believe in building character through discipline, respect, and faith,” Harjit shares. “Our children practice hard, but they also pray and reflect before and after their sessions.” This balance of mental

resilience and physical training has been key to their success.

Despite the challenges, including managing stress and balancing family life, Harjit and Atinder remain deeply involved in their children’s progress. “We never just dropped them off at practice or a game. We stayed, observed, and supported them throughout,” Harjit says. This dedication to constantly supporting a child to excel in whatever they want to do is key to raising a sports champion that makes the family proud and uplifts the community, all while being a great individual on and off the playground.

How did you ensure that your child’s mental health is prioritized, especially in the high-pressure world of sports?

We believe in open communication and grounding our children in faith. We encourage them to see competition as a journey, not a destination. Whether it’s a win or a setback, we focus on helping them stay balanced and learn from every experience.

Q Q Q Q &Q

What has been your biggest success as a parent in this journey?

Our greatest success is raising three disciplined, humble daughters who respect their family and community. It’s not just about their achievements in weightlifting but their character and the pride they bring to their heritage.

What advice would you give other parents raising young athletes?

Be present and involved. Don’t just drop your children at training and expect results. Stay engaged, understand their struggles, and be their biggest cheerleader. Invest time in helping them build both their skill and their confidence.

What’s a message you’d like to share with young athletes pursuing their dreams?

Respect the effort of those supporting you—your parents, coaches, and mentors. Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself. Success will follow if you stay consistent and grounded.

You’re loyal, reliable, and the best person a friend could have.

The Big Picture

Major bonus: In June, lucky Jupiter enters your sign to stay for 12 months! Hey, things don’t get much better than this! (Actually, they do because in 2026, you get richer!)

Relationships

This year you’ll have more responsibilities. There are only 24 hours in a day. Furthermore, some aspects of this “harvest” will be a failure. Therefore, you might have less time for your relationships and be discouraged or whiny. You might be so involved in your career that you ignore loved ones. Don’t do this. At the end of the day, it’s your private world that gives you your greatest sense of personal reward.

For the first four months, you might be bossy! If people start acting defiantly toward you – this is your clue. On the upside, the increased respect from your peers can make your family proud. They share in your glory! (What’s good for the bee is good for the hive.) By summer, when Jupiter moves into your sign, you’ll feel more lighthearted, benefiting your family. “This year, I’m confident and enjoying my popularity!”

You’ve Got Me Covered

You’re theatrical. You’re an excellent teacher, comfortable with attention. Because of your bravado, many fail to grasp that you’re a serious person. You’re generous to a fault. If someone is preparing to tread unchartered waters, and it’s an area with which you’re familiar – you will bombard them with advice. You’re a protective parent and bristle at criticism of your cubs. You’re a welcome addition to any party.

The Big Picture

This year, you’re in the spotlight of success and increased popularity! Expect a promotion at work, public recognition, and the increased esteem of your peers. Some of this began last year – but it continues this year in a marvelous way. You feel now is the time to get things done, which is why you’ll work hard to get ahead. As the year progresses, your popularity will increase! Friends will be supportive. You will find it rewarding if you can improve the world around you somehow.

Relationships

As this year wears on, your popularity will increase! Others will bask in the light of your success. However, because your ego might be inflated, you could be difficult to live with. (This might not be the case, but it’s possible.) Therefore, you will need people who understand your insecurity and self-doubt. As the year progresses, you’ll become friendlier, softer, more idealistic, and attractive to everyone.

Home Suite Home

This year, the family will be proud of you. Nevertheless, you might have to get along with less because resources are reduced. This means less money to share with your family. (This is ironic because, at the same time, you’re experiencing a successful reputation!) You’re generous and inspirational to family members and whatever your situation – you create fun times! Leos may not always shine in the kitchen but they are entertaining parents.

Element: Earth

Symbol: The Virgin Ruling Planet: Mercury

“How can I best use my successful image?”

You’ve Got Me Covered

“Virgo” is “service”. You give good hotel. You know about wellness and healthy foods. You have vitamins in your cupboard, most of which you don’t take. No one is more observant. You’re a fabulous editor. You know historical tidbits and endless trivia gems. Your ability to grasp subtle nuances lets you imitate others to the delight of your friends. You’re intelligent and discerning, and you seek the unattainable – perfection.

The Big Picture

With lucky Jupiter at the top of your chart, your success is obvious to everyone this year! However, guard against being too focused on your professional success. Partners might feel overlooked. Remind yourself to be real with those who are important to you. Of course, they’re happy about your success, but they want to feel special in your eyes as well. Therefore, make sure that others share your success in a way that also lifts their world. (A rising tide lifts all boats.)

Relationships

A once-in-30-year challenging aspect might create problems. Partnerships that have been limping along might end. You might feel a relationship is more trouble than it’s worth. You will feel others are making increasing demands on you. Even a successful partnership will have to confront its flaws at this time. You might feel older with achy joints or teeth problems despite your career success. These challenges will pass and be gone by next year.

Home Suite Home

This year, the Vitamin B shot that life gives you will translate favorably to your family. You’ll have more energy to focus on their needs. Furthermore, your obvious success could mean more money, which you can share to benefit others, especially your kids. However, this is a trying year for partnerships. Remember: For a relationship to be successful, you must be as good for your partner as he or she is for you.

Take the high road – the view is better.

Relationships

Seek out input from professionals – counselors, astrologers, or experts. Be open to teamwork because others can benefit you physically, practically, and financially.

You will receive the increased esteem of your peers. This also continues to be a marvelous year for improving your health (except for weight gain). This is also an excellent year to heal or recover from an illness.

Relationships

In the first four months, disagreements are likely. (Be patient and diplomatic.) Ironically, by summer, relationships will become wonderful! Jupiter will be in your House of Partnerships for the first time in 12 years, strengthening them in an extraordinary way and bringing joy and optimism to all your partnerships. You might make money investing in sports, film, music, hotels, theme parks, resorts, golf courses, restaurants, and anything related to the entertainment or hospitality industry. Likewise, business related to children could be profitable. If you don’t do things to replenish yourself and stay motivated – how can you keep working effectively?

Relationships

Your relationships will be affected by these contradictory influences this year. When you feel that you must cut back, be conservative, and save your money, naturally, you will spend less money going out shopping for things you both like. However, you will also be more serious, which could push you towards a stabilized relationship. Fellow Aquarian Paul Newman said, “People stay married because they want to, not because the doors are locked.”

Home Suite Home

Family, especially children, will be a source of joy for you this year. You’ll feel rewarded for being able to give children the financial and practical support they need. Nevertheless, you’ll be mindful of your desire to save money. This could confuse your family because one day, you want to take everyone off for a fun excursion. Then, the next day, you say you can’t afford pizza. Life has its contradictions.

THE NEXT FRONTIER

AMinister, Post-Secondary Education & Future Skills, BC

“AI is expected to impact many occupations over the next 10 years, making skills in AI increasingly more valued in the labor market. We also recognize that AI tools may benefit post-secondary teaching and learning.”

rtificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform industries, redefine societal norms, and shape the future. As we enter 2025, AI's integration into everyday life is expected to grow even deeper, with groundbreaking advancements and innovative applications becoming the norm. Surely, as a new year rolls around, AI is expected to become more pervasive and intuitive, with advancements in natural language processing, computer vision, and autonomous systems. Models such as OpenAI's GPT series are expected to offer more nuanced conversational abilities and a greater understanding of complex tasks. These AI tools will likely be embedded in everyday applications, from personalized virtual assistants to healthcare diagnostics and financial planning.

By 2025, AI is likely to be seamlessly embedded in daily routines. Smart home devices powered by AI will predict user preferences, automate chores, and enhance security. Autonomous vehicles, while still in their early stages, may see wider adoption, reshaping transportation systems globally. Furthermore, conversa-

tional AI will become indistinguishable from human interactions, revolutionizing customer service and personal communication. As AI becomes more intuitive, it will serve as a valuable partner in managing personal and professional responsibilities.

AI Trends to Watch in 2025

Generative AI Domination:

Generative AI, the driving force behind tools like ChatGPT, will become increasingly sophisticated. Beyond creating content, these tools will aid in designing complex systems, writing code, and automating workflows in industries ranging from entertainment to engineering.

AI in Healthcare:

AI-driven tools will play a crucial role in predictive diagnostics, personalized medicine, and robotic surgeries. Wearable devices integrated with AI will monitor health metrics in real-time, enabling proactive healthcare management.

AI and Sustainability:

AI models will assist in tackling climate change by optimizing energy use, improving supply chain efficiency, and developing sustainable materials. Companies like DeepMind are already using AI to reduce energy consumption in data centers to help fight climate change and build a more sustainable, low-carbon world, a trend likely to expand.

Ethical AI Development:

As AI becomes more integral to decision-making, there will be a stronger focus on ethical AI. Governments and organizations will prioritize transparency, bias reduction, and equitable access to AI technologies.

AI-Powered Education:

AI tools in education will offer personalized learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and support educators in curriculum design. These advancements could revolutionize how students and teachers interact in the classroom.

ANNE KANG

From the office of the Honorable Anne Kang, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills in British Columbia acknowledges AI's growing impact on the labor market, “AI is expected to impact many occupations over the next 10 years, making skills in AI increasingly more valued in the labor market. We also recognize that AI tools may benefit post-secondary teaching and learning.” However, although organizations are optimistic, it is also essential to consider AI’s limitations, challenges, and potential risks.

The Ministry emphasizes that it is essential for post-secondary institutions to understand and promote the responsible, ethical, equitable, and transparent use of AI tools while also ensuring the protection of privacy and security. The benefits of an AI tool rely on its careful and responsible use. In that light, British Columbia’s Post-Secondary Digital Learning Strategy includes a Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework and Guidelines for Technology-Enhanced Learning. These resources support post-secondary institutions in their approach to emerging technologies.

The Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills has formed an AI Policy Working Group with experts from across the post-secondary sector to develop model policies, guidelines, and collaborative practices that support the appropriate use of AI in our society. Nevertheless, issues like job displacement,

data privacy concerns, and the ethical implications of autonomous systems need continued careful consideration. Governments and organizations must address these challenges through robust regulations and public awareness campaigns.

From a federal standpoint, Canada is all set to prosper in the field next year. The nation has positioned itself to become a global frontrunner in artificial intelligence by introducing the Canadian Sovereign AI Compute Strategy. This transformative $2 billion initiative, propelled by the Canadian government, focuses on enhancing the nation's AI computational infrastructure, providing a critical boost to innovation and research across key sectors such as healthcare and

The growth of AI in 2025 is poised to be transformative, touching every aspect of our lives. As such, responsible development and use of AI are crucial to ensuring its benefits are equitably distributed. By fostering collaboration between governments, educational institutions, and businesses, society can navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this powerful technology. Microsoft’s Satya Nadella aptly puts it, “AI is the defining technology of our times. The future we will invent is a choice we make, not something

Single & Searching

How Self-Worth Shapes The Love We Attract

The beginning of the year is a time of self-reflection, and seasonally, this can often tie into themes of romantic love. For many singles, this season brings an opportunity to examine recurring patterns in their romantic lives. At the heart of these patterns often lies a pivotal factor: self-worth. In simpler terms, how we view and value ourselves profoundly influences the relationships we form and the love we accept.

To understand self-worth in connection to our relationships, it is essential to start from the roots. Our childhood heavily influences the beliefs we form about love and worthiness, impacting the relationships we attract. Certified Hypnotherapist and Rapid Transformational Therapist (RTT) Meghna Sharma notes that childhood is where our subconscious blueprint for love is formed. When a child grows up in an environment where love feels conditional or unavailable, they may internalize beliefs such as “I have to earn love.” These beliefs often attract partners who recreate the same feelings of neglect or rejection, reinforcing familiar yet painful dynamics.

Sharma highlights that childhood wounds act as an emotional blueprint for our adult relationships. If you grew up feeling dismissed, neglected, or unworthy, those emotions become your subconscious “normal.” As a result, you’re likely to gravitate toward partners who recreate those same feelings

because the mind is drawn to what it knows, even when it’s painful. This is why someone who felt ignored might attract emotionally unavailable partners or why someone who had to please to earn love might end up in one-sided relationships. Beliefs about love and self-worth, often formed early in life, operate unconsciously, driving our behavior in relationships. For instance, someone who believes “I’m only valued for what I provide” may overextend themselves, becoming a giver who attracts takers. These beliefs can lead to sabotaging behaviors, such as settling for less, avoiding vulnerability, or pushing people away.

Transformation begins by identifying the root of these beliefs—through self-reflection, therapy, or RTT—and consciously replacing them with empowering truths like “I am enough” or “I deserve mutual love and respect.” Breaking free begins with awareness, which entails identifying patterns and

"This is why people say, 'You marry your unfinished business.' The mind is trying to resolve the past by reliving it. Awareness of these patterns, coupled with intentional healing, allows you to break free and choose partners who meet your emotional needs rather than re-trigger old pain.”

understanding how they connect to your past. Once you’re aware, Sharma states that you can consciously choose new beliefs and behaviors that align with the love and respect you deserve. Tools like therapy, mindfulness, and journaling can help uncover and rewire these limiting patterns.

An expert in the field, Sharma is the founder of ILUMA Therapy, bridging the realms of subconscious healing and conscious creation. She describes RTT as a powerful modality that bypasses the conscious mind to access the subconscious, where 95% of our thoughts and behaviors originate. “Many clients don’t even consciously remember the events that shaped their beliefs. In RTT sessions, clients often uncover surprising root causes, like feeling unwanted in the womb or being told as a child that they were a 'mistake.'" By revisiting these pivotal moments, RTT helps close emotional loops and neutralizes the pain associated with those memories. It

then rewires the subconscious to adopt new beliefs, such as “I am worthy of love,” and installs a healthier blueprint for relationships.” Unlike surface-level approaches, RTT creates lasting change by addressing the root cause of the issue, often within 3-6 sessions.

Seeking emotional safety means prioritizing relationships that bring stability, trust, and peace rather than ones driven by drama or chaos. Many confuse intensity ("fireworks") with love, but these relationships often leave us feeling anxious, insecure, or unseen. Emotional safety, on the other hand, feels like a “fireplace”—warm, steady, and calming to the nervous system. When you value emotional safety, you shift from chasing validation to seeking partnership. This transforms your relationship choices by aligning them with your deeper needs for connection, respect, and love.

For singles struggling with self-doubt, Sharma outlines reflective exercises to help shift beliefs and attract healthier relationships, centered around journaling to uncover patterns through four profound questions:

1. What emotions have been most dominant in my past relationships?

2. How do these emotions mirror what I experienced in my family growing up?

3. What beliefs about myself and love might I have formed from these experiences?

4. If I could describe my ideal relationship in terms of how I want to feel, what would those feelings be?

It’s all about mustering up the courage to take that first step, and the ripple effect can be felt beyond just the individual. Sharma reinforces that healing yourself breaks the cycle of passing down generational wounds. Healing enables parents to model healthier dynamics, teaching children self-respect, emotional resilience, and the importance of boundaries.

Most importantly, healing allows you to attract partners who reflect your energy, approaching relationships from a place of wholeness!

New Year, New You! We’ve all heard this phrase over the years, and it has become a tiresome but regular reminder of our expectations for ourselves leading into January. The new year is a blank slate, and most of us enter the first month with a list of goals we want to achieve. Most New Year's resolutions focus on fitness, mental health, and financial goals. The intention behind each goal is always the same: the desire to do better and be better. However, let’s be honest here—more often than not, we end up biting off more than we can chew.

So, how can we make our resolutions last? The SMART method for goal setting is a scientifically proven technique for lasting change.

Step 1: Make It Specific

Define your goal with clarity. A vague goal like "I want to lose weight" isn’t enough. Instead, aim for something more concrete, such as:

• "I want to work out twice a week."

• "I want to run a 10k this summer."

• "I want to consult a nutritionist to better understand my dietary needs."

Step 2: Make It Measurable

Establish how you’ll track your progress. Ask yourself:

• How many times a week will I work out?

• How will I monitor my fitness improvements?

• What metrics will I use to measure my nutrition goals?

Step 3: Make It Achievable

Ensure your goal is realistic and within reach. Consider:

• When can I fit workouts into my schedule?

• Can I involve a friend to help me stay accountable?

• Are there financial costs associated with this goal, and can I manage them?

Step 4: Make It Relevant

Check that your goal aligns with your current priorities and values. Reflect on:

• Is now the right time to pursue this goal?

• Does it support what’s most important in my life right now?

Step 5: Make It Timely

Set a clear deadline to stay motivated. Choose a timeline that resonates with you and keeps you focused. Decide on a timeline, such as:

• Conducting a progress check-in after three months.

• Using an upcoming event like a wedding or vacation as a target date.

Example of a SMART goal

"I want to improve my fitness this year by exercising at home three times a week with a personal trainer. I’ve budgeted for the cost, making this goal achievable. It aligns with my values, and I’ll assess my progress after three months to track improvements."

Remember, this isn’t just about setting goals but about creating the lifestyle of your dreams. Research indicates that it takes 21 days to establish a habit. Moreover, neuroplasticity reveals neurons that “wire together, fire together.” Essentially, by setting your goals and sticking with them, you are rewiring your brain for success.

This coming year, set intentions and not just goals. Always remember you have what it takes to make your dreams a reality!

TAKING FOOD A NOTCH UP

Chefs Baldeep Sraw & Kanwardeep Ahluwalia

Baldeep Sraw and Kanwardeep Ahluwalia, two chefs with roots in India and hearts in the kitchen, are redefining Indian fine dining in Canada. From managing renowned 5-star kitchens worldwide to building a thriving food business with four distinct offerings in British Columbia—Sirka Gourmet Takeout, Purani Dilli Kitchen & Bar, Everyday Foods, and their recent crown jewel, Notch Up Caterers—these chefs have brought innovation, culinary expertise, and a passion for food back to the tables of gastronomes in Vancouver.

From India to Canada – A Passion for Great Food

Kanwardeep started his culinary

journey at IHM-Aurangabad in India, thereafter, spending six years working across 16 different Taj properties, including the Taj Lands End in Mumbai. He played a key role during the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in India, overseeing the preparation of 40,000 meals a day for athletes from all across the world. He moved to Canada in 2012, working with renowned brands like the Fairmont and The Mariott Hotels before starting his entrepreneurial ventures.

As for Baldeep, he knew he wanted to be a chef at age 10! Choosing culinary arts over aeronautical engineering, he started with the Hyatt Group, managing the iconic Guchhi, a specialty kitchen known for its north Indian food in Kolkata. He immigrated to Canada in 2010 and soon landed an exciting opportunity with Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, where he

introduced Indian menus to diners and established the hotel as a premium destination for Indian weddings. The duo met at Fairmont and shared their collective vision of bringing authentic Indian food to Canada, which would not only be true to their soil but also very different from what other Indian restaurants were offering at the time. The pandemic served as a nice time to reflect and reinvent, and they came up with Sirka Gourmet Takeout in Surrey, with innovative and flavorful Indian street food options. Following the impressive success of Sirka and inspired by the lanes of Old Delhi’s culinary traditions, they recently opened doors to Purani Dilli Kitchen and Bar—a boutique dining experience

for Indian food lovers with interesting options like Babri Seekh Kababs, 36Hour Dal Makhani, Motorwala Chicken, and seasonal delicacies like Kharore Ka Soup. Complementing their existing businesses, Everyday Foods is a line of freshly baked Indian bread, ranging from pavs to kulchas, available at leading South Asian grocery stores across the Lower Mainland.

Notch Up Caterers: A Cut Above the Rest

Chefs Baldeep and Kanwardeep’s newest venture, Notch Up Caterers, promises a bespoke experience and global versatility to catered events. Unlike traditional catering services in the Lower Mainland,

Notch Up Caterers specializes in personalized global menus for each meal, listening closely to each client’s vision and preferences to craft a menu that suits their event and budget. With their vast experience and multiple trainings in kitchens across the world, chefs Baldeep and Kanwardeep cook authentic menus for their Notch Up clients. Whether it’s a six-day Greek-Punjabi wedding, blending Italian, Mexican, and Indian cuisines throughout the week, or a six-course plated dinner for the British Columbia Regiment’s St. Julien’s Dinner (that they have catered consistently for the past two years!), Notch Up delivers highquality, global flavors with impeccable hospitality and service. Other cuisines they offer are Thai, Japanese, French, Mediterranean and beyond.

A Legacy and Vision for the Future

Both chefs emphasize the importance of passion and perseverance when plating good quality, hearty meals for each foodie who orders a dish. “Cooking is not just a job—it’s a craft that demands patience, love, and passion,” says Chef Kanwardeep. Chef Baldeep adds, “There are no shortcuts to success, irrespective of what you do. Experience builds perfection!” Beyond their businesses, both Baldeep and Kanwardeep are committed to giving back, and they make it a point to regularly partner with the Surrey Food Bank to provide meals and support throughout the year. As Chefs Baldeep and Kanwardeep continue to redefine eating out and catering for largescale events, their vision is rooted in traditions and inclusivity. With bold plans of expanding Notch Up Caterers and introducing avant-garde dining concepts in Vancouver, they aim to offer luxury, opulence, and sophistication at each establishment they build. Their journeys from kitchens in India to entrepreneurial success in Canada are a testament to the power of skill, experience, and determination—a drive to bring a piece of South Asia to Canadian tables!

DR. MONTY GHOSH

Shaping New Pathways in Addiction and Homelessness Care

In the battle against addiction and homelessness, Dr. Monty Ghosh is a transformative force. Driven by a profound commitment to revolutionizing healthcare, he has emerged as a beacon of compassion and innovation, challenging conventional approaches to critical issues such as alcohol and opioid dependency, methamphetamine use, cannabis addiction, and behavioral addictions like gambling, sex, and video gaming. Through his pioneering initiatives, the physician, researcher, educator, and advocate is not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering lasting change in how healthcare systems support marginalized communities. His work underscores the significant impact every individual can have in advancing a more

just and equitable society.

Bridging the Gap: Transforming Addiction Treatment

Dividing his time between Edmonton’s University of Alberta Hospital and Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre and Rockyview Hospital, Dr. Ghosh's clinical work is just one aspect of his expansive contributions. He’s worked with organizations such as The Alex and Calgary Drop-In Centre to make an enduring impact on marginalized communities. A key initiative Dr. Ghosh has spearheaded is Alberta’s first home detox program, born out of needing more detox facilities. “Patients often had to wait for hours or were turned away. By allowing low-risk

" Addiction and homelessness are systemic challenges that intersect with justice, social services, and policy.”

individuals to detox at home with proper support, we’ve reduced the pressure on healthcare services while centering care around the patient,” he says. Since its launch, the program has helped over 200 individuals, playing a crucial role during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

NORS: A National Effort to Combat

Overdoses

Another catalytic project led by Dr. Ghosh is the National Overdose Response Service (NORS), a lifeline for individuals using substances alone. What began as an idea inspired by a patient’s innovative approach to virtual support has blossomed into a nationwide initiative. The emergen-

cy line aims to provide immediate support to people and ensure that they aren't using drugs alone.

Dr. Ghosh is quick to credit Lisa Morris Miller, the CEO of NORS, for driving the program forward. “Lisa’s leadership has been instrumental in fuelling this project. She truly pushed the program with a level of vision and determination that made this service possible,” he acknowledges. Supported by Health Canada and partners like Grand Final Ministries, NORS has saved lives by providing priority assistance to those in crisis.

A Holistic Approach: Healing from Within

Dr. Ghosh's work in addiction treatment is rooted in his understanding that these issues are complex and multifaceted. “Addiction and homelessness are systemic challenges that intersect with justice, social services, and policy,” he explains.

“We must address these issues on all fronts, through innovation, education, and advocacy while always grounding our efforts in data and the lived experiences of those affected.”

He draws inspiration from the voices of his patients, who often provide invaluable insights into how care can be improved. “Every initiative I’ve been involved in has stemmed from concerns raised by patients themselves. My role is to amplify their voices and turn their ideas into actionable programs,” he shares.

Compassionate

Action: Connecting Healthcare and Community

Beyond treatment, Dr. Ghosh is committed to addressing larger social factors influencing addiction. One of his major contributions is the medical respite program, which offers individuals experiencing homelessness a safe space to recover after hospitalization, bridging the critical gap between medical care and stable housing.

He often references the Rat Park experiment to highlight the importance of community and environment in the recovery process. “The Rat Park study showed that when animals were placed in an enriching environment, addiction rates dropped significantly,” Dr. Ghosh

points out. “The same principle applies to humans—when individuals are part of a supportive community, they are more likely to succeed in recovery.”

Dr. Ghosh is also deeply aware of the trauma many individuals face in their journey with addiction. “Many of the people I work with have experienced significant trauma—whether emotional, physical, or sexual. Addressing that trauma with empathy and understanding is key to helping them heal,” he asserts.

Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders

Dr. Ghosh’s commitment to change extends beyond direct care into education. As an assistant professor at both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, he ensures that the next generation of healthcare professionals is prepared to tackle the complex issues surrounding addiction and homelessness. His leadership roles, including serving as president of the Section of Addiction Medicine at the Alberta Medical Association and co-chair of the Canadian Network for the Health and Housing of People Experiencing Homelessness, amplify his advocacy for systemic change on a national scale.

Creating Lasting Change: A Legacy of Collective Action

His message is clear: real change requires a collective effort. “It truly takes a village to create meaningful change. By fostering understanding and providing robust support, we can help individuals rebuild their lives,” he says.

Through relentless work and leadership, the addiction warrior has become a symbol of hope and innovation. His dedication to compassion, community, and equity continues to inspire all of us to believe in the power of collective action and to create a society where everyone has a fair opportunity to thrive.

Beetroot Tikki & Saag Burrata?

Aanal Kotak

Redefines Indian Cuisine in Canada

My initial cooking memory dates to when I was just eight years old. Every Saturday, my mom would go to the Hanumanji temple, leaving me home with my dadi, who would make theplas. It was my first attempt at cooking, and though I made a huge mess, I made some oddly shaped theplas that my father enjoyed. My mom was pleasantly surprised. That day sparked my love for cooking and taught me the joy of creating something for my loved ones.

YOU’VE INTRODUCED SOME UNIQUE DISHES TO THE SECRET KITCHEN. WHAT INSPIRED THEM?

Beetroot Peanut Butter Tikki was born out of a challenge—I’ve always disliked beetroot, but I wanted to create a dish that could make beetroot enjoyable for everyone, including my son. Saag Burrata is my way of blending Indian traditions with global flavors. It’s about connecting cultures through food, which is what The Secret Kitchen is all about.

HOW DOES THE SECRET KITCHEN STAND OUT FROM OTHER INDIAN RESTAURANTS?

The Secret Kitchen is about innovation. While we offer some classics like Butter Chicken and paneer dishes, every recipe has a unique twist. Our spice blends are house-made in India and crafted personally by me. These blends create lighter, more flavorful dishes that stand out from typical Indian cuisine. While 30–40% of our menu remains consistent across locations, 50% is crafted specifically for the Canadian palate. Dishes like Saag Burrata and Delhi Chaat with Hummus exemplify how I incorporate local influences while staying true to my roots.

WHO INSPIRED YOU THE MOST IN YOUR JOURNEY?

In the professional world, Chef Vikas Khanna, but my true inspiration comes from my family—my dadi, nani, mom, and maasi. Cooking is in our genes; my son, too, is now a budding critic—his sharp palate challenges me to keep improving.

A MESSAGE FOR CANADIAN DINERS.

The Secret Kitchen is built on love. Every dish we serve is infused with my passion and crafted to bring people together. I hope Canadians will connect with us through the food and enjoy the innovative twists we’ve brought to Indian cuisine.

Gwalior is not just the inspiration for The Palace Court collection, but it has also been instrumental in shaping

Once upon a time, there were only a few big-name beauty companies that dominated the cosmetics industry. Fast forward to the latter part of the 20th century, when we see the emergence of niche or boutique brands. Though the mega brands haven’t gone away, there has been an explosion of smaller brands that get traction; thanks, in a big part, to word of mouth on social media. Into this mix has come clean beauty. Once a subset category, it’s now increasingly competitive with conventional beauty brands as consumers become more aware of what goes into products and the environmental story around how they’re produced.

Evaluating what sets apart clean beauty brands can be challenging for a consumer, but there are specific, measurable criteria that can help determine the validity of a brand's clean beauty claim.

“Look for transparency in ingredients, sustainable sourcing, accreditations, and environmental responsibility,” says Anna Teal, global CEO of Grown Alchemist, an Australia-based skincare brand. Grown Alchemist’s products, Teal explains, are designed to be at least 95% biodegradable, while the packaging—100% recycled RPET bottles, aluminum tubes, and FSC-certified cartons—reflects the company’s planet-conscious ethos.

How To Know If A Brand Stands UpTo Its Green Claim

"Look for transparency in ingredients, sustainable sourcing, accreditations, and environmental responsibility."

“A truly clean beauty brand aligns health, efficacy, and environmental stewardship at every step,” she notes.

Rachelle Séguin, co-founder and president of Quebec-based Omy Lab, says that even though the term ‘clean beauty’ is unregulated, some ways exist to evaluate if a brand deserves the ‘clean’ label. One clear measurement, she says, is “B Corporation certification administered by B Lab, a non-profit organization committed to promoting and measuring the social and environmental performance of businesses.” Omy Lab, which has received this certification, has met these criteria with its formulas made from vegan ingredients of at least 95% natural origin, 60% sourced from local distributors, an environmental approach to production and shipping, and workforce policies.

“We also exclude over 2,000 ingredients from our skincare formulations, going well beyond the standards set by typical clean beauty certifications,” Séguin adds.

Look at the product’s ingredients and see if you recognize them, advises Olga Roberts, co-founder of British Columbia-based skincare brand Collage. Roberts says the Collage skincare system boasts 97% natural ingredients, all ethically sourced.

“We use ingredients that you recognize and are familiar with and might even be comfortable using on your skin,” Roberts says. “Brands that are truly clean beauty will have ingredients listed on their website and will educate you on those as well. So, they’re being forward with providing you all the data for informed decision-making.”

Rachelle Séguin notes that the app Yuka allows users to quickly scan an ingredient and receive an explanation of whether it’s safe or not. Yuka “can offer insight by analyzing ingredient lists and highlighting potentially harmful components based on its database.” She adds, “Omy Lab skincare products meet the criteria for a green rating on Yuka.” Research and development required to create a more natural beauty product are as stringent and time-consuming as those for conventional brand products, and they are often more expensive, which can be reflected in the price point.

“Grown Alchemist formulations are over 94% natural and use biotech and botanical actives backed by clinical testing and customer user trials,” Teal explains. “By using biotechnology, we can be precise about the part of the extract we are using. We prove that clean beauty can deliver high performance without compromising safety or sustainability, leading the way in innovation and responsibility.”

When queried about the efficacy of clean versus conventional products, all three women agreed that clean beauty, thanks to the combination of ingredients and biotech processes, delivers effective results.

“People often mistakenly believe that natural or vegan products are less

RACHELLE SÉGUIN

effective, but that’s not true,” Séguin says. “Take niacinamide (vitamin B3), for example. While most niacinamide on the market is synthetically sourced, at Omy Lab, we opted for a biotech-derived alternative. Though it comes at a higher cost, it offers the same skincare benefits without the environmental impact.”

Roberts concurs that the efficacity exists but admits it can take longer to see.

“A new wave of creativity and technical innovation has brought together the best of both worlds,” explains Teal. “Grown Alchemist celebrates biological beauty by combining plant-based ingredients with scientific innovation to create clinically proven products.”

To maintain a shelf life comparable to conventional products, clean beauty producers do use some form of preservative. Omy Lab’s Séguin replaces conventional preservatives with post-biotic peptides. “This approach is microbiome-friendly and better suited for sensitive skin. However, because this technology is less commonly used, it required extensive testing.”

In moving from niche into the mainstream of the beauty industry, clean beauty producers’ aim is to bring a holistic approach to both the products and the means of production. “We’re trying to respect nature in all aspects,” says Roberts. “There’s always room for improvement.”

Clean beauty brands unite sustainability, innovation, and transparency, offering effective, eco-conscious products without compromising quality. With rigorous standards and biotech advancements, these brands empower consumers to make informed, responsible choices for their skincare and the planet.

"We use ingredients that you recognize and are familiar with and might even be comfortable using on your skin."

FITNESS TRENDS 2025

The Next Big Shifts

In How We Move And Breathe

As the calendar flips to 2025, fitness enthusiasts and wellness seekers are poised to embrace a wave of innovative trends reshaping how we move, breathe, and sweat. From tech-driven workouts to holistic approaches, this year promises something for everyone. Whether you're a data-loving athlete or a mindful mover, 2025's fitness forecast will have you lacing up your sneakers or reaching for your smartwatch in no time.

Tech Takes the Lead

Technology is undeniably the star of 2025's fitness show, with wearable technology once again claiming the top spot in the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends. These gadgets, ranging from fitness trackers to smartwatches, go far beyond counting steps. They now provide real-time insights into heart health, sleep patterns and even detect arrhythmias. According to the ACSM

report, "Wearable activity trackers can support healthy lifestyle behavior change through goal setting and personalized coaching."

Similarly, mobile exercise apps, ranked second, have skyrocketed in popularity. In 2023 alone, fitness apps saw over 850 million downloads globally, highlighting their adaptability and accessibility. As Dr. Alexios Batrakoulis, a contributor to the ACSM report, puts it, "Apps now offer flexibility, enabling users to blend workouts with their daily routines seamlessly." Whether you're into HIIT or yoga, these apps bring the gym to your fingertips.

Strength and Mindfulness

In an age where physical and mental health intertwine, exercise for mental health holds steady at eighth place. Post-pandemic, the fitness community has embraced movement as medicine for the mind. Activities like yoga, tai chi, and even walking are gaining traction for their stress-reducing and mood-enhancing benefits. Research published in the Journal of Behavioral

Medicine found that regular exercise significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, making this trend a cornerstone of 2025’s wellness landscape.

Meanwhile, traditional strength training has reclaimed its position in the top five, emphasizing the timeless appeal of lifting weights. "Building muscle isn't just about aesthetics—it’s about health, functionality, and longevity," notes Dr. Sarah Camhi, an ACSM panelist. As gym-goers swap machines for free weights, the focus shifts toward mastering technique and progressive overload.

Aging Gracefully

Fitness isn't just for the young and restless. Programs for older adults have secured the third spot in the ACSM's trends list, underscoring the importance of maintaining strength, balance, and mobility as we age.

According to Dr. A’Naja Newsome, lead author of the ACSM survey, "The over-60 demographic is redefining fitness goals with more diverse options that go beyond light-intensity classes." Expect to see gyms and community centers offering tailored programs to combat sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) and improve overall quality of life.

Eco-Friendly Fitness

Sustainability is infiltrating the fitness industry as consumers become more environmentally conscious. From gym equipment made of recycled materials to eco-friendly workout apparel, 2025

is the year of green fitness. Companies are also reducing their carbon footprint by designing energy-efficient gyms and promoting outdoor workouts. Outdoor fitness activities, ranked 13th, are bridging the gap between exercise and nature, offering a breath of fresh air— literally.

Data-Driven Workouts

For those who love precision, data-driven training technology is here to elevate your fitness game. Ranked seventh, these innovations use biofeedback, like heart rate variability and sleep data, to optimize workouts. "The ability to adjust exercise intensity in real-time improves safety and effectiveness, particularly for special populations," explains the ACSM report.

HIIT and Functional Fitness

Despite its intense reputation, highintensity interval training (HIIT) remains a favorite, climbing to sixth place. Combining short bursts of effort with brief recovery periods, HIIT delivers maximum results in minimal time. It’s perfect for busy professionals looking to squeeze in a workout during their lunch break.

At the same time, functional fitness training, which mimics everyday movements like squatting and lifting, is gaining traction. This modality improves balance, coordination, and core strength, making it ideal for all age groups.

The Rise of Influencer-Led Workouts

Social media is shaping fitness in unexpected ways. Ranked 12th, influencer-led fitness programs are leveraging platforms like TikTok and Instagram to offer engaging, instructorled content. While the ACSM cautions against following unqualified influencers, the trend underscores the power of digital communities in promoting healthy lifestyles.

2025’s fitness trends reflect a broader shift toward inclusivity, personalization, and holistic wellness. Technology continues to enhance how we approach fitness, but the human connection—whether through a personal trainer, a group class, or an online community—remains vital. As we embrace these trends, let’s remember that the ultimate goal is not just to move more but to live better.

As Dr. Newsome aptly concludes, "The future of fitness is not just about physical health; it’s about fostering mental resilience, community connections, and sustainable practices." So, whether you’re strapping on a smartwatch or heading to a local park, 2025 is your year to move and breathe with intention.

Though the makers are hush-hush about the storyline, it is believed that the plot has a complete makeover and is set on a cruise. Sharing the image of the cast from the ongoing shoot on a cruise, the makers wrote, “The team of #Housefull5 cruising their way to y’all. Gurtej &Raman

Q: How did you two meet, and what was your first impression of each other?

We originally met online but had lost touch with one another. After a few months, we managed to reconnect, and the rest is history. We thought one another was quiet at first but have learned we’re both sarcastic and share the same sense of humor.

Q: Can you share the story of your proposal/engagement? Was it a grand surprise or a quiet, intimate moment?

In classic Gurtej fashion, we had an intimate proposal at the first spot we met. I was pleasantly surprised when Gurtej sprung the question on me at the Quay on a quiet evening walk, as we always do, just before I was about to go home.

Q: Describe your wedding day for us. Did you have a favorite part of the wedding?

We had a traditional Sikh ceremony, which was held at the Ross Street Sikh Temple. I had a quiet morning getting ready and the best makeup artist, Allure by Arsh, to work with, who ensured I was calm during the process. Other than a few hiccups, everything went smoothly. We both felt nervous until the laavan were finished, and then it was a sigh of relief. We couldn’t have asked for a better fall day to get married, as the sun was shining and all our closest family and friends were there. Our favorite part of the wedding day was being on our own on the way to take our photos. It was so nice to talk about our mornings and spend some one-on-one time with each other for a little while in the middle of a long wedding day.

Q: Tell us more about your reception.

Our reception was amazing. Evergreen Decor did an amazing job collaborating with us and making our vision of a chic black-and-white theme come true. Celebrating with close

family and friends into the late-night hours was the best hurrah we could've imagined. A Master Media captured our most intimate moments with friends and family during the week, and seeing the final product was beyond our imagination. This was one of our favorite moments of the night - seeing photos and videos collected throughout the week.

Q: How did you choose your wedding attire for the both of you?

Since we were having a fall wedding, we wanted to incorporate those colors into our wedding day. Both of our wedding outfits were by Made In India; my lehenga embodied the traditional fall colors and theme that we wanted. The sherwani was made to complement my beautiful lehenga in a cream color, and we opted to go with a red paagh so it stands out.

Q: Were any traditions or customs particularly important to include in your wedding?

It was important to both of us to have our grandparents there, and that was a priority for us. We considered a destination wedding in Mexico, but Raman quickly shot that down. Thankfully, having everyone close to

us, old and young, to celebrate with us ultimately was the deciding factor, and we were thankful for everyone who came.

Q: Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?

We wouldn’t change anything! Everything went smoothly, thanks to all the help from our families. Overall, we were very happy with how things turned out amongst the chaos of a Punjabi wedding. One thing we will always cherish most is all our extended and close family being together and the quality family time we spent.

Q: What do you love the most about one another?

Gurtej: That's a tough question. Raman is one of the most caring and thoughtful people I've met. She values family above all and holds traditional values, which are hard to come by these days.

Raman: The thing I admire most about Gurtej is his work ethic. He is one the most hard-working individuals I know, and he finds a solution to everything.

Q: How does it feel to be married, and what are you most looking forward to in this new chapter together?

Aside from transitioning into a new household, not much has changed between

us. We've slowly developed a routine and continue to grow with one another. We're excited to continue our lives together and work together to achieve our dreams in life and family.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

Enjoy the moment! After all the planning and preparation, some things don't go to plan, but the most important thing is to remember the fundamental meaning of the wedding and enjoy that aspect, as it passes by so quickly in a blur.

As we head into 2025, the quarter mark of the 21st century proves to be an exciting one for the automotive industry as vehicles continue to become increasingly connected, less reliant on traditional energy sources, and showcase more advanced innovations. From self-driving and parking cars to a rideable briefcase designed to get people to their last-mile destination, here are a few next-generation developments to look out for on the road in the coming year.

There are many videos on YouTube showing the GMC Hummer moving in a peculiar manner—diagonally. This is thanks to a unique four-wheel steer capability, allowing the rear wheels to turn at the same angle as the front, up to 10 degrees, and at a top speed of 32 km/h. The unique maneuver helps the so-called electric supertruck navigate tight off-road trails and parking spots and improves stability when towing a trailer. Plus, it just looks darn cool. Don’t want a Hummer?

Infiniti QX80Individual Audio

The days of private conversations broadcast to a whole load of passengers may soon be a thing of the past with the introduction of Individual Audio, found in the third-generation Infiniti QX80. A feature of the 24-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere stereo (sensory trim level and above), the technology utilizes a kind of reverse active noise cancellation (similar to what’s used to electronically block out unwanted external sounds) that permits the driver to take calls inside an audio “bubble,” while the rest of the cabin continues to enjoy music or podcasts uninterrupted.

Hyundai Ioniq 5Remote Smart Park

Assist 2

Modern cars are equipped with cameras and sensors for collision avoidance and other safety functionality. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 leverages these so a user holding the key fob can guide the electric crossover into or out of a parking spot using a few button presses. The system (available on certain grades) does everything—steer, accelerate, decelerate, shift, and even brake automatically if an object is detected in its path—and works for parallel, diagonal, and perpendicular parking.

Kia EV9 - Lighting Patterns

Back in the day, the only way to add customized lighting effects was via the aftermarket (think The Fast and the Furious). Now, vehicles like the Kia EV9 provide the experience right out of the box. The solid grille of the flagship EV appears to be just a standard painted panel, but there is actually an integrated LED matrix that shines through when the SUV is turned on. Currently, five distinct patterns are offered (on Land AWD Premium and GT Line Package models), with a sixth on the way when the sporty 2026 EV GT variant arrives later in the year.

Rivian - Pet Mode

Keeping pets unattended inside an automobile in extreme weather is obviously a big no-no. That is unless the automobile is a Rivian. Pet Mode keeps the cabin temperature between 20-23°C to keep furry friends comfortable. A digital note also appears on the display, assuring passersby everything is above board. The feature is available on the R1T and R1S when they are in the park and have more than 80 kilometers of range remaining, and owners are able to keep an eye on the status using the Rivian mobile app.

Honda - Motocompacto

While not a car, the Honda Motocompacto electric folding scooter and other micro-mobility options will become an essential piece of the transportation puzzle as cities try to solve rising congestion and environmental challenges. The Motocompacto has a pedal-less body measuring only 967.8 millimeters long, 889 millimeters tall, and 437 millimeters wide when folded into its briefcase form factor for easy storage and carry. Weighing 41.3 pounds, the little two-wheeler supports a rider up to 265 pounds, has a top speed of 24 km/h, and a range of 19 kilometers.

General MotorsSuper Cruise

GM’s Level 2 autonomous driving assistance functionality has come a long way since debuting way back in 2017. Enabling true handsfree divided freeway operation by utilizing a combination of GPS, onboard cameras and sensors, and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) tech, the driver simply has to have a subscription to the required connected ser-

vices and keep his or her eyes on the road ahead. Approximately 1.2 million-plus kilometers of North American highways are expected to be supported before the year ends.

Lucid Air Grand TouringExtended Range

When the Nissan Leaf was released in Canada in 2010, the zero-emissions hatchback had a then-ground-breaking 120 kilometers of range on a single charge. Fast forward to 2025, and the California-based luxury EV brand Lucid sells a version of the Air sedan (Grand Touring) boasting a whopping maximum range of 824 kilometers, made possible due to some recent upgrades, including motor and battery cell chemistry enhancements and the addition of a heat pump to reduce draw on energy reserves. The price tag is steep, though: starting

VINFAST

VF 8 PLUS

A NEW ELECTRIFIED PLAYER ON THE SCENE

You may have seen an unfamiliar-looking crossover in passing wearing a “V” on the grille and wondered what that was. Well, it’s actually the newest EV to join the Canadian market: the Vietnamese-made VinFast VF 8.

MOTOR: DUAL ELECTRIC

HORSEPOWER: 402

TORQUE (LB-FT): 457

GEARBOX: SINGLE-SPEED AUTOMATIC

LAYOUT: FRONT/REAR MOTORS, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

FUEL ECONOMY: 3.1 LE/100 KM MIXED CITY/HIGHWAY (MANUFACTURER ESTIMATE)

“Today, VinFast has taken another big step in its mission to foster the global electrification revolution. I believe with VinFast’s non-stop efforts together with its serious and methodical business strategy, it will soon gain the trust and support from Canadian customers,” says Anh Nguyen, VinFast North America CEO, in a media release when the first units arrived on local shores back in summer 2023.

The SUV’s unique styling is a result of a partnership involving two Italian design firms, Pininfarina and Torino Design, both putting their mark on various Ferraris, Alfa Romeos and others. Exterior highlights include stacked headlamps, signature winged LED daytime running lights and matching taillight bar, stubby overhangs, 20-inch wheels, and stretched wheelbase. Measuring 4,750 millimeters long and 1,934 millimeters wide, the size is a tad larger than a Hyundai Santa Fe. Inside, the cabin boasts a huge 15.6-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen acting as the command center controlling virtually all vehicle functions—outside of the core steering, braking, and transmission—as well as

showing crucial onboard information, as there are no gauges or monitor mounted ahead of the driver. Fortunately, a headup display is standard, showing speed and additional pertinent info on the windshield.

When the model initially launched, the electronic collision avoidance features ensured drivers paid attention to the safety systems via obnoxious audible and visual warnings, like whenever the posted speed limit was exceeded or a lane departure warning was triggered. Thankfully, this has seemingly been largely addressed through updates.

The seats are comfortable no matter where occupants sit in the tworow interior, and legroom is above average for the segment. However, there’s still a legacy transmission tunnel bump above the floor due to the SUV being initially conceived as an internal combustion automobile. There’s sufficient cargo space with 76 liters up front in the frunk and 373 liters behind the second row, or 1,359 liters if the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down.

Another recent fix is the fine-tuning of the front strut and rear multi-link suspension to smooth out the ride. Though I personally didn’t experience this during early testing, some reviews of the VF8 noted a bouncy ride causing motion sickness.

Performance-wise, the vehicle matches up to the competition, packing dual 150-kilowatt motors producing 402 horsepower, 457 lb-ft of torque (plus trim), and all-wheel drive. In addition, a de-tuned entry-level Eco grade is available, outputting 348 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. A new, larger 87.7-kilowatt-hour battery feeds the propulsion system and provides a range of approximately 425 kilometers and 391 kilometers, respectively, on a full charge. Plugged into a standard Level 2 source, a full top-up takes about 9.5 hours at 11 kilowatts. DC fast charging is also supported, at a maximum of 150 kilowatts, and can get energy reserves from 10 to 70 percent in around 31 minutes.

The 2023 VinFast VF 8 is built in Haiphong, Vietnam, and prices start at $53,600 MSRP (Eco) or $59,200 (Plus). Want more space? The automaker has just launched its flagship three-row VF 9 with seating for seven.

VOLVO XC90 WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN

AHIGHLIGHTS

MSRP: $TBA

MOTOR: 2.0-LITRE TURBOCHARGED

FOUR-CYLINDER WITH ELECTRIC MOTOR

HORSEPOWER: 455

TORQUE (LB-FT): 523

GEARBOX: EIGHT-SPEED AUTOMATIC

LAYOUT: FRONT-ENGINE, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

FUEL ECONOMY: 8.9 L/100 KM MIXED CITY/HIGHWAY (MANUFACTURER ESTIMATE)

pproaching the decade mark, the second-generation Volvo XC90 may be getting a little long in the tooth. However, the range-topping crossover gets a ‘2025.5’ model year inside-out refresh (not to be confused with the 2025 released last year) that’s certifiably beautiful, helping cement the vehicle’s flagship status.

“Here you see some of the features with the XC90—some of my favorites with this car are the new grille and also the new exterior color. It's called Mulberry,” says Thea Burlin, Volvo Cars Color and Materials Designer, during a recent product briefing and media drive event in Scandinavia. “For the interior, my favorite part is the new Herringbone Weave, which is [found on the] Premi-

um Textile seat.”

From far away, the SUV still embodies the brand’s classic silhouette but move closer, and the subtle aesthetic improvements quickly become evident. The LED headlamps take on a more streamlined shape, barely larger than the integrated Thor’s Hammer signature daytime running lights. They flank the flush grille referenced by Burlin, housing unique polished asymmetrical diagonal slats that help the front end stand out on the road. Below, the restyled bumper swaps out the horizontal side air intake for vertical units, and the lower intake is quite a bit wider.

Elsewhere, the taillights are slightly darker than before, with fresh wheel designs up to 22 inches. The afore-

mentioned cab-sauv-like Mulberry paint is stunning, though the T8-powered press vehicles we drove sprayed in the earth-toned Bright Dusk looked great as well against the dark blue backdrop of the Øresund strait.

Venture inside, and the bigger 11.2-inch infotainment portrait display, now freestanding rather than inset into the dashboard, immediately pops out. Vertical air vent blades complement the upright visual elements of the exterior. Boasting a higher resolution and shared interface with the EX lineup of electrified SUVs, the Google built-in software is updatable over the air and is loaded with native apps. Apple CarPlay is supported for those who prefer the iOS user experience.

The trademark Orrefors crystal gear knob is standard equipment installed on an upgraded center console, allowing additional adjacent space for (2+1) drink containers and more convenient placement of the wireless phone charging pad underneath the screen.

A heavy emphasis is placed on using sustainably sourced materials throughout the cabin, from the untreated wood trim to the Nordico synthetic leather made using recycled PET bottles and cork. The dash is upholstered with a fine fabric reminiscent of what might be seen on a nice European coat. The speakers on the available Bowers & Wilkens audio system wear new delicate

alloy mesh covers, and the stereo can be configured to sound like a recording studio, intimate stage, Gothenburg Concert Hall, or jazz club, depending on mood and music choice.

Crystal clear concert hall tunes provided the perfect soundtrack to our coastal cruise between Copenhagen, Denmark, and the southern part of Sweden. The enhanced suspension sporting Volvo Frequency Selective Damping technology—capable of scanning the driving surface up to 500 times a second to match stiffness to current conditions automatically—wasn’t worked very hard on the smooth pavement we glided over, but still yielded a composed, comfortable ride even on the curviest of sections.

The powertrain offerings remain the same. The T8 plug-in utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and 14.7-kilowatt hour battery pack good for 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, and a combined travel range of 800-plus kilometers (or approximately 70 in zero emissions mode). Whisper quiet at start-up, and even highway motoring is pretty serene thanks to acoustic foamfilled pillars and other improved sound insulation found elsewhere.

A fully gas-powered B6 is available, propelled by a 2.0-litre turbo-and-supercharged inline-four mild hybrid setup making 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Both models are all-wheel drive and mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Deliveries of the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 are expected to begin sometime this first quarter, with prices TBA.

Meet the Gilbert Family

What inspired you to make the move to Canada, and how has your journey been so far?

My husband, Gilbert, inspired my move to Canada after relocating here for his Master’s in 2012. Following our marriage, it felt natural to join him. Having previously lived in the UK while pursuing my Master’s degree, adjusting to a new culture was easy. With its breathtaking landscapes and inclusive, progressive society, Canada quickly became home.

Where did you first stay when you arrived in Canada?

When I first arrived in Canada, Gilbert had recently moved from Alberta to British Columbia. I was incredibly fortunate that he had already set up a beautiful, welcoming home for us to start our new life together.

How would you describe your experience finding a job in Canada?

Finding a job initially in my area of expertise was challenging despite my prior work experi-

ence. The Canadian job market often values local experience, so I had to adjust my resume and familiarize myself with local job boards, networking, and interview practices. While the process was slower than I expected, my persistence eventually paid off and I finally secured a role that matched my skills.

How has your experience as an immigrant shaped your view of Canada as a country?

Moving to Canada has shown me just how inclusive, diverse, and welcoming this country really is. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, which only strengthened my admiration. The focus on fairness, equality, and accessible services like healthcare is something I deeply value.

How have you managed to stay connected to your roots while embracing Canadian culture?

I participate in local cultural events and gatherings that allow me to celebrate my traditions. Food plays an important role in this connection—by cooking and sharing Indian dishes, I spark conversations and introduce others to my culture. Additionally,

I continue to speak my native languages with family and within the community.

If you could go back in time, would you do anything differently about your immigration journey?

Honestly, I wouldn’t change anything! I truly enjoyed the process, even with its challenges. The ups and downs have shaped who I am today, and I’m grateful for the growth that came from each moment.

How do you see the future for yourself and your family in Canada? What are your hopes and aspirations?

I see a bright and promising future filled with endless opportunities. As parents, we are committed to building a stable, rewarding life that balances both our heritage and Canadian culture. Our focus is on advancing our careers, contributing to the community, and providing our daughter with the best opportunities.
