I read May/June 2024 issue of DARPAN and I am happy to note that this covers a wide-range of need-based topics. Particularly I like Bina Sheth Lashkari's innovative and daring approach of launching Door Step School and School on Wheels. I immensely appreciate how she approached the parents of slum dwellers in Mumbai and transformed the kids who would have become beggars and even drug peddlers . She fairly deserved all accolades, Stree Shakti Puraskar conferred on her in 2013 by Hon'ble Pranab Mukherjee ,President of India is one such award.

The Bank of Canada cut its key interest rate for the first time in more than four years. Will Canadians benefit from this move?
While Canadians will certainly benefit, interest rates remain high. The cut in the overnight rate in June was more akin to the Bank of Canada easing off the economy's brakes than stepping on the gas. Household debt payments will continue to rise over the second half of this year as fixed-rate mortgages renew at higher interest rates. The Bank of Canada's beginning to move interest rates lower is good news. It is a result of inflation showing sustained signs of slowing and increasing the odds that we are getting closer to the end of the adjustment of households to higher interest rates.
As the inflation rate ticks higher in May, the BOC's next rate decision for July 24th looks less certain. What are your predictions for the foreseeable future?
RBC Economics' base-case assumption is that the Bank of Canada will cut rates again on July 24th with an expected cut of 100 basis points for calendar 2024 (including the 25-basis point cut in June and the expected cut in July). That expectation is contingent on the economy remaining soft and inflation continuing to drift lower. Per-capita GDP is tracking a decline in Q2 2024 for the 7th quarter out of the last 8. The unemployment rate has increased almost 1 ½ percentage points from lows post-pandemic lockdown, and the upside surprise in May inflation numbers followed four slower readings earlier this year. Interest rates are still set at levels high enough to restrict economic growth. The Bank of Canada estimates that the level of the overnight rate that won't add to or subtract from economic growth (the neutral rate) is somewhere in the range of 2.25% to 3.25%. The current overnight rate at 4.75% is still well above that range, and there is a strong argument that the overnight rate does not need to be as high as it is given a softening economic backdrop.
What economic factors may push against inflation's decline?
That's a great question. For one, housing prices could rise. A structural undersupply of housing relative to demand in Canada has worsened as population growth accelerated over the last two years. That will keep a floor under shelter costs for the foreseeable future. Broader inflation pressures are still expected to soften alongside a higher unemployment rate and slower percapita consumer demand. The breadth of inflation has narrowed in Canada, with the share of products and

services seeing abnormally high price growth that has decreased to around longer-run average levels.
In the event that homeowners' mortgages collapse, what will the impact be?
The Canadian mortgage market is tightly regulated, prices also remain high, and a structural undersupply of housing is keeping a floor under those prices. Higher equity in housing means more options. It is also why we work with every client to find a tailored solution for each client that provides a holistic approach to their financial wellness.
Are banks worried about upcoming mortgage renewals due to recent rate hikes for their clients? What measures do the banks have in place for their customers?
From a macro perspective, we expect the payment hike to be manageable. The adjustment for households renewing 4- and 5-year fixed-rate mortgages individually is large, but the total size of the payment increase economy-wide adds up to roughly 0.2 to 0.3% of total household disposable incomes this year and next. Unlike the initial round
of unexpected payment shocks, this one is widely anticipated. We are contacting clients proactively to have these conversations and look at their total financial picture so that clients are best positioned to navigate this moment through a holistic lens. The everyday decisions we make about where and how we save, spend, and give back can often benefit us the most.
What is your economic outlook for the rest of the year?
Interest rates are still at levels that are high enough to impact economic growth. RBC Economics expects GDP growth to remain positive over the second half of this year but will continue to decline on a per-person basis. RBC Economics also expects the unemployment rate to increase to 6.5% over the second half of 2024 from 6.2% (as of May). We expect some acceleration in economic growth next year and for the unemployment rate to begin edging gradually lower in 2025. For the calendar of 2024, RBC Economics anticipates that GDP will post a 1.0% increase (well below the rate of population growth), followed by a 1.8% increase in 2025.
Is there a solution or strategy to help Canada and Canadians escape such volatile financial times?
Because these times mean different things to different people, it's important that individuals sit down with their financial advisors for an understanding of what this means to them. Take time to explore the tools and resources that will help guide their day-to-day and longer view decisions. Lastly, build an agile plan to help each individual achieve their life goals for today, tomorrow, and the road.

Puja Tomar, the trailblazing Indian MMA fighter who made history as the first Indian-born female to sign with the UFC and achieve a landmark victory against Brazil's Rayanne Amanda dos Santos, shares her emotional journey of resilience, strength and determination. From defying societal expectations in her small-town upbringing to conquering the international stage, the 30-yearold MMA superstar gets chatty with Darpan.
I want to show that we are here, strong, and ready to compete on the global stage." “
By Natasha D’Souza
Puja Tomar's journey began in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India, where societal norms often stifled dreams, especially for girls. Born into a family hoping for a son, Puja faced early rejection that ignited a fierce determination to break stereotypes and forge her own path. For Puja, adversity became her greatest motivation. Following her father's
death, she committed herself to achieving something extraordinary despite the doubters and naysayers. "I couldn't afford formal training, so I improvised," Puja shares. "Watching martial arts films and practicing at home became my refuge." Her perseverance paid off when she found herself on the global stage, representing India in the UFC. She credits Jackie Chan's movies for igniting her passion for combat sports and shaping her early techniques and mindset.
Puja's historic win against Rayanne Amanda dos Santos was a triumphant moment for her career and Indian MMA. Her victory resonated across borders, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams against all odds.
Navigating the underrepresented world of MMA in India presented its own set of challenges. "Infrastructure and support were lacking but I refused to be discouraged. Every setback only fueled my determination to prove that Indian fighters are a force to be reckoned with."
Puja attributes much of her success to her coach's unwavering support and guidance, who has been her rock throughout her journey. She recounts, "Especially coming from a country still young in the sport, people's outlook and attitude towards you can be mortifying. Even my compet itors often had already decided that I was losing the match. Some media personnel, while not all, wrote me off before I even began. During some of my conferences, it felt like the stories were pre-planned, the narrative set, and I was just being ques tioned to validate their stance."
Puja acknowledges the role her mother played in shaping her resilience. "My mom is my hero," Puja says with pride. "She's been far ahead of her times, en couraging us to push our limits and giving wings to our dreams. My mom has always been my first cheerleader, bandaging my wounds after a match, dusting my back, and prepping me for the next. She has driven us closer to our ambitions despite the limited means. My sisters are doc tors and play their part in giving back to society. Her grit and perseverance have cascaded down to us."
Puja is determined to spread a message to the world that Indian fighters should not be underestimated. "I want to show that we are here, strong, and ready to compete on the global stage," Puja asserts passionately. Looking ahead, she remains steadfast in bringing home a UFC championship belt for India.

Some people get it on their first try. For me, it took four attempts. I'm glad I went back. This year, I felt more confident and purposeful. I've been advocating for mental health and being open about it. I want others to know they can do the same."
Tanpreet Parmar’s journey to becoming Miss Canada 2024 is a powerful story of resilience, self-improvement, and unwavering determination. Her path was not one of instant success but a series of challenges she faced head-on with grace and perseverance. Competing for the Miss Canada title four times, Tanpreet’s story is about believing in herself and her vision, demonstrating significant personal growth and transformation. Tanpreet’s initial step into pageantry began in 2014 when she competed for the Miss British Columbia title. She was exploring new avenues to build her confidence and self-esteem at that time. The experience ignited a passion to continue improving. She then won the Miss India-Canada pageant in 2016, which boosted her enthusiasm for pageantry. Her attempts at Miss Canada saw her reaching the top six on her first try, then second runner-up on her second attempt, and not placing at all on her third. Despite these setbacks, she viewed them as opportunities to learn and grow.
By Monica Sethi
Tanpreet sought feedback and worked on herself. She understood the need to build her confidence, define her purpose, and be more open about her vulnerabilities and struggles. This self-reflection led her to take two years off after her third attempt to focus on her mental health and overall well-being. During this time, she joined the Stigma-Free Mental Health Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about mental health. As a speak er for the organization, Tanpreet shared her journey, discussing societal pressures and addressing unrealistic beauty standards. Her advocacy for mental health is particularly significant in the South Asian community, where such discussions are often stigmatized. She emphasizes the importance of self-love, positive self-talk, and being proud of one’s achievements. By advocating for mental health, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams with out letting societal pressures and self-doubt hold them back.
As Miss Canada, she aims to inspire others to embrace their unique qualities and pursue their passions, no mat ter how many times they may face setbacks. Reflecting on her journey, Tanpreet says, “Some people get it on their first try. For me, it took four attempts. I’m glad I went back. This year, I felt more confident and purposeful. I’ve been advocating for mental health and being open about it. I want oth ers to know they can do the same.”
Tanpreet Parmar’s journey is a powerful reminder that resilience, self-love, and determination can lead to remarkable achievements. She stands as a role model not only for aspiring pageant contestants but for anyone striving to overcome obsta cles and fulfill their dreams.

With elections just around the corner in October, the political landscape in British Columbia is experiencing significant changes. The BC NDP, which has been in power for nearly seven years, faces mounting challenges. The province is grappling with soaring rent, cost of living, and a notable outflow of residents. In the past year alone, 70,000 people moved out of BC, a first in history. Despite these issues, the BC NDP remains ahead in the polls by a slim margin. According
to the latest poll, the NDP leads with 40% voter support, closely followed by the BC Conservatives at 38%. The BC United trails behind the BC Greens, making the upcoming elections a pivotal moment in the history of BC.
The BC Liberal Party, now rebranded as BC United, is experiencing a dramatic decline. Once a dominant force, BC United is struggling to maintain relevance in the current political climate. The decision to
change the party's name in April 2023, intended to distance it from the federal Liberal Party and unify the electorate, appears to have backfired. Shachi Kurl, President of Angus Reid Institute, notes, "The gamble in changing the name didn't work." She highlights the broader political shift, explaining, "There's been a re-alignment. The NDP of the '80s, '90s, and even 2000s used to be extreme left of center, but it has come closer to the center since John Horgan. This has made it difficult for BC United to convince centrist voters to choose them."
“There's been a realignment. The NDP of the '80s, '90s, and even 2000s used to be extreme left of center, but it has come closer to the center since John Horgan. This has made it difficult for BC United to convince centrist voters to choose them."
Shachi Kurl President of
Angus
Reid Institute
Richard Johnston, Canada Research Chair in Public Opinion, Elections, and Representation at UBC, provides further context, explaining that the BC Liberal Party historically operated as a coalition, including federal liberals and more right-leaning members. This broad appeal helped maintain unity under leaders like Gordon Campbell. "The name change put the question of the party's identity on the table. People were willing to go along with the continuity of the label, but all of a sudden, that continuity is gone," Johnston explains. The shift in BC NDP's position towards the center under John Horgan further squeezed BC United out of the centrist space, leaving them vulnerable. Johnston asserts that BC United's unique appeal as a pro-business, moderate party has diminished, pushing voters towards the more polarized options of NDP and
Conservatives. This decline also reflects a broader trend where voters are less inclined to support centrist parties, preferring to lean towards the more defined left or right.
Despite their lead, the BC NDP cannot afford to be complacent. The rising cost of living is a significant liability, with over one-third of residents considering leaving the province. Kevin Falcon, Leader of the Opposition and BC United, criticizes the NDP for making BC the most unaffordable province in Canada, with the highest rent, fuel, and housing costs. "We've had seven years of BC NDP, and holding them responsible for the results is important. We have become most unaffordable—the highest rent, fuel, and housing in Canada and 70,000 people left BC for other parts of Canada last year for the first time. Our number one goal is to get rid of BC NDP," says Falcon.
Johnston points out that we're victims of our success. People want to live in British Columbia. They come here to get jobs but discover there’s no place to live, and the healthcare is a mess. The success of attracting people to BC has exacerbated housing and healthcare issues. He argues that the NDP is paying for decades of neglect in these areas, which didn't start in 2017.
Despite these challenges, Shachi Kurl adds, "There is dissatisfaction, but British Columbians have yet to decide that they trust another party."
Premier David Eby emphasizes, "We are working together to support families, individuals, and businesses when they're facing a lot of pressure. We've got people's backs, and we're standing with those who need that extra support right now."
The BC Conservatives have emerged as a formidable force, buoyed by the branding strength of federal conservatives. Once considered niche players, they now boast credible MLAs and a growing support base. Elenore Sturko, MLA for
Surrey-South who switched from BC United to the Conservatives, exemplifies this shift. "I was hopeful that my previous party, the BC United, would be able to make a deal to see us working together with the Conservatives. But when that didn't come together, I had to make a decision for myself," Sturko explains. John Rustad, leader of the BC Conservatives, aims to clearly define his party's vision. He focuses on priorities such as eliminating the carbon tax, making hard drugs illegal, restoring the resource sector, and improving public safety. Rustad is determined to run 93 candidates and form a majority government, believing British Columbians are counting on them for change. "If we form a government, we will have several priorities, including the elimination of the carbon tax, making hard drugs illegal, making our streets safer, restoring our resource sector, and hiring back our healthcare workers," says Rustad.

The political scene in British Columbia is dynamic, with the NDP holding a fragile lead, BC United struggling for survival, and the Conservatives gaining ground. Regardless of who wins, the next term will be challenging. The rising cost of living, unaffordable housing, skyrocketing rents, and escalating fuel prices are significant concerns. The healthcare system, plagued by long emergency lines and critical service shortages, demands urgent reforms. These issues and several others require strong leadership and innovative solutions. The upcoming elections promise to be a turning point, setting the stage for addressing these critical challenges. British Columbians will be watching closely, hopeful for a government that can rise to these challenges and deliver meaningful change.

Simran Khosla, a viral fitness sensation, full-stack nutritionist and weight-loss coach, has redefined the landscape of health and nutrition with her unique blend of traditional Indian practices and modern science. Known for her catchy social media handle "Butt Like an Apricot," the fitness influencer’s journey from a finance student in India to a global fitness consultant in Texas is a testament to her resilience and innovation. Her authentic approach and commitment to holistic wellness have made her a beacon of inspiration, empowering a diverse, global audience to embrace healthier lifestyles.
Simran's journey began in a corporate job where she witnessed firsthand the health struggles of her colleagues. Realizing that many people lacked the time to visit a nutritionist or gym, she started an online consultancy about nine years ago. This initiative allowed people to access diet plans and workouts from the comfort of their homes. Her move to the USA exposed her to similar challenges among the Indian population there, reinforcing the need for action to tackle the global fitness crisis among the cash-rich and time-poor generation. The name "Butt Like an Apri-
cot" was born out of a moment of spontaneity. Simran wanted a name that would resonate widely, and while eating an apricot one day, she noticed its resemblance to a butt. The name stuck and became a memorable brand that reflects her playful yet serious approach to fitness.
Simran's South Asian roots have profoundly influenced her approach to nutrition and fitness. She remains committed to traditional ways of eating, focusing on simple, wholesome foods rather than fancy diet trends. This approach, combined with modern nutritional science, has successfully enabled her to “de-glamourize” the concept of health and nutrition. "Traditional practices
from our moms and grandparents still work today," she says, emphasizing the timeless value of these methods.
Her holistic wellness philosophy centres on two key principles: eating foods closer to nature and maintaining regular movement through walking, running, weight-lifting, or yoga. She advocates for balance, avoiding extreme diets, and focusing on a balanced meal to maintain health. "Our answers lie in our roots. Don’t overcomplicate fitness and wellness," she advises.
Simran also works to dispel common myths about fitness and nutrition. She emphasizes that a 45-minute workout, 4-5 days a week, is sufficient and that nutrient-dense foods are more important than calorie restriction. While acknowledging that genes play a role in weight loss, she firmly believes that hard work and proper nutrition can significantly alter one’s physique over time.
Leveraging social media has been a key part of Simran's strategy to bridge ancient and modern health practices. For her, educating the masses about the fundamentals of nutrition is crucial.
Simran's authenticity sets her apart as a fitness advocate. She practices what she preaches and maintains a raw, real approach that resonates with people. "People can tell when someone is genuine," she notes.
Her mission is simple – empower people to proactively seek and sustain health and wellness and underscore the importance of integrative nutrition in daily life.
Recently married to former India U19 World Cup-winning captain, Unmukt Chand, advising young female fans across the globe, she concludes, “Balancing family
and
is crucial, but I've learned not to obsess over either while being able to find a harmonious balance. Both parts of the puzzle are essential, and it's important not to neglect one for the other but keep a safe distance from the mad rush in your head and the obsession to be best at everything every time, all at once.”
Simran Khosla stands as a testament to the power of authenticity and cultural integration in the realm of health and wellness. As she continues to inspire and educate a global audience, her journey emphasizes the importance of balancing tradition with modernity, and personal ambition with communal well-being. With her eyes set on expanding her impact further, Simran Khosla is poised to continue transforming lives, one apricot at a time.

As we take on the summer months, maintaining healthy and radiant skin becomes a top priority. The combination of increased sun exposure and humid weather presents unique challenges, but with the right approach, you can keep your skin protected and glowing throughout the season.
Asia Narwal and Raman Gill from LaserDerm Medical Aesthetics point out that sunscreen is paramount, "Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours and don't forget areas like your arms, chest, and hands." Sunscreen should be integrated into your daily routine, and it is suggested to keep one at home, in your car, and in your bag for easy access. After all, hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin issues and the leading cause is sun exposure. "Makeup with built-in sunscreen, such as foundation, blushes, and lip balms, is also a convenient option.”, recommend Narwal and Gill.
Pavneet Dhanoa from Skinomics Medical Spa reinforces the importance of sunscreen, especially during outdoor activities. "Sunscreen should be worn year-round, not just in the summer.
Whether it is sunny, raining, cloudy, or snowing, UV rays from the sun are still damaging our skin. UV exposure causes about 80% of your skin's aging, so it's crucial to be protecting our skin daily. In summer, people spend more time outdoors, making sunscreen a must. Consider mineral sunscreens if you have sensitivity issues.", says Dhanoa. Alongside staying out of direct sunlight, and staying under cover and in shade, wearing a hat is a great way to protect your scalp as well.
Hydrating your skin is equally crucial during hot and humid weather. It is important to hydrate from the inside out with water and moisturizer, opting to use lightweight moisturizers and hydrating toners to protect the skin barrier. A skin care hack Dhanoa shines light on is picking moisturizers that are in gel form rather than thick cream form and can be more lightweight for the hot and humid months.
Moreover, hyaluronic acid serums are excellent in humid weather
for their hydrating properties. “Exfoliate twice a week and moisturize day and night. A quick refreshing facial can give your skin a quick pick-me-up any time!”, highlight Narwal and Gill. Additionally, hydrating mists are a great option with additional skin benefits, as they contain hydrating and soothing ingredients.” My clients especially love the Glymed Skin Recovery Mist as it calms inflammation and acne as well, and can be used throughout the day even if you're wearing makeup.”
When it comes to addressing common summer skin issues like sunburn or heat rash, Narwal and Gill offer a step-by-step guide:
Step 1:
Cool the area with a cold compress or cool bath.
Step 2:
Apply Vitamin C or any antioxidant.
Step 3:
Apply fragrance-free and alcohol-free aloe vera.
Step 4:
Moisturize and protect the skin barrier.
While Aquaphor or Vitamin E are great options, regular lotion works as well. The key lies in using cold compresses and moisturizing the area to nourish the skin until healed. Dhanoa adds, "Aloe vera gels, easily available over the counter, are effective for soothing sun-exposed skin, while products like La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume AP+M can soothe itching, flare ups, and rebalance the skin's microbiome.”
Undoubtedly, maintaining healthy skin during summer involves consistent sun protection, hydration, and timely remedies for any skin issues that arise. By integrating expert tips into your skincare routine, you can enjoy the season while keeping your skin glowing and protected. Remember, investing in your skin's health now pays off in the long run, ensuring a radiant complexion and maintaining skin resilience yearround.

Successful people embody certain common traits, such as vision, creativity, drive, discipline, and hard work. Charan Sethi exemplifies these qualities, having demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his goals and an innovative spirit throughout his career. As the founder of Tien Sher Group, Charan Sethi has showcased his vision and determination by investing in and transforming Whalley, an area once dismissed as unlivable. His journey from a machinist to a real estate developer highlights his resilience, hard work, and dedication to community building.
Charan Sethi's journey into real estate was born out of a desire for better opportunities. After moving to Canada in 1978 from England, he worked as a machinist until 1985. Frustrated with the stagnation in his career, Charan Sethi decided to explore the world of real estate—a field that had always intrigued him due to his father's involvement in house renovations in England. Despite the challenges of studying for a real estate license after a long hiatus from formal education, he persevered and became a realtor on April 1, 1985.
Starting with Century 21, he soon moved to REMAX, where
he thrived among top producers. His knack for land assembly work, where he facilitated deals involving multiple landowners and developers, earned him a place among the top 10% of producers worldwide within the REMAX system. However, a pivotal moment in his career came when a developer failed to honour a promise, prompting him to reconsider his path. Encouraged by a friend, he embarked on his development ventures, founding Tien Sher Group in 2004, representing Charan Sethi and his two sons, symbolizing their combined efforts and vision.
The story of Charan Sethi's transformation of Whalley is one of vision, perseverance, and a deep commitment to the community. When he first considered investing in Whalley, the area was notorious for its high crime rates and was often regarded as the worst part of the Lower Mainland. However, he saw potential where others saw problems. In collaboration with city officials, including then-Mayor Dianne Watts and former Mayor Doug McCallum, he formulated a plan to revitalize Whalley.
Charan Sethi's investment in Whalley started with acquiring a significant land parcel, which has now grown to encompass 16 acres, with 10 acres already developed. Tien Sher's developments in Whalley are not just about building homes but creating vibrant communities. His holistic approach focuses on mixeduse developments that cater to diverse demographics and provide essential amenities. The Flamingo One tower, a 36-storey building set to be completed in May 2025, exemplifies this vision. It includes 375 homes, 55,000 square feet

of office space, and various commercial outlets such as restaurants and medical
Despite facing significant challenges, including a devastating fire in 2008 that destroyed 116 homes, Charan Sethi's determination never wavered. He rebuilt what was lost and continued to push forward, driven by a philosophy that embraces life's challenges and focuses on achieving long-term goals. During the rooftop ceremony for Flamingo One, it was a moment of immense pride for the South Asian community to see one of their own transforming the cityscape.
"I don't just build buildings or apartments or homes; I build communities," says Charan Sethi. "What makes a home special is what surrounds it. If you have children, you want a school nearby. If you're elderly, you want to walk around safely. It's essential to create dreams of a good community."
The development strategy at Tien Sher involves creating mixed-use spaces that serve multiple purposes and demographics, reflecting Canada's multicultural society. This approach ensures
I've known Charan Sethi for a long time, and he is a pioneer in real estate development. Charan and his boys have done an amazing job, and there's much more to come. I'm so proud of him."

that each project caters to every age group and ethnic background, fostering an inclusive environment. The current projects in Whalley feature office buildings, commercial spaces on the ground floor, and residential towers, making each development a self-sufficient community.
Looking to the future, Charan Sethi continues to expand his vision of community building with new projects in Penticton. Collaborating with his younger son, he is developing a 10-acre site in Penticton that will feature over 1,500 homes, an office building, and a commercial plaza. Known as the Innovation District, this project incorporates innovative ideas and aims to create a complete, walkable community. The development will provide medical practitioners with space, given its proximity to a hospital, and will include commercial spaces on the ground floor to serve local needs.
Much like Charan Sethi's work in Whalley, the Penticton project is designed to foster a sense of community and belonging. By creating gathering spaces such as gyms, co-op working spaces, meeting rooms, and mini theatres, he
aims to combat the isolation that often plagues urban areas.
The appeal of Innovation District extends beyond its real estate offerings. Located in the middle of Penticton, the district is a stone's throw away from essential services. The area also boasts quick access to the town's two lakes, promoting an active, healthy lifestyle supported by expanding bike and pedestrian infrastructures. Residents can look forward to amenities that enhance community living and personal well-being. The development also prioritizes sustainable transportation options, with provisions for e-bikes and e-scooters, encouraging residents to embrace a car-free lifestyle.
"We thought about amenities that make your life better as opposed to loading the building up with a bunch of stuff that just looks nice on paper," Cha-
Tien Sher is one of our favourite clients. We've done many projects with them, and they're always a pleasure to work with."
Cam Good President, KEY Marketing
“I
grew up not too far from the Whalley area. So when I heard about Tien Sher's project, I knew I wanted to be part of it because it holds so much sentimental value. I'm so glad that I got involved."
Brad Burnett Executive Vice President at ITC Construction Group
ran Sethi says. "And that culminates with the rooftop deck, from which you can see the lake, entertain friends, or get out there and enjoy the weather on your own."
The Innovation District will be its own community within a community. The village will have numerous commercial offerings and walking trails. It will address the city's massive housing shortage, with vacancy rates under 1.5%. Accord-
ing to the city's housing needs assessment completed in 2023, the industrial, health care, and other business sectors are all having difficulty recruiting people because people have no place to live. With homes starting from $279,000, Innovation District is set to provide attainable luxury in a market that has traditionally been challenging for many to enter.
Charan Sethi's success is rooted in his relentless drive and genuine love for what he does. Despite being 72 years old, Sethi's work ethic remains unmatched. His days often start at 5:30 AM and end late into the night, driven by a deep sense of fulfillment from his work. "The sense of achievement is big for me," he says. "It's so fulfilling because you take a piece of land, lease on it, go through it, develop it, build on it and have happy faces move into it."
His commitment to mentorship and community service further illustrates his dedication to giving back. He frequently guides those seeking direction in their careers, emphasizing the importance of motivation and drive. Charan Sethi's philosophy is simple yet profound: "Aim at the goal and keep on going at it." This mantra has guided him through numer-
ous challenges and remains a cornerstone of his approach to life and business.
For the South Asian community, Charan Sethi's journey is particularly inspiring. His story is a powerful reminder of the opportunities that exist in Canada and the importance of perseverance and hard work. He encourages young people to remain focused and treat each other respectfully, emphasizing the value of unity and mutual support. "Be a Canadian—there's space for everyone. Don't pull each other down," he advises.
Charan Sethi's vision extends beyond real estate; he envisions a society where people from diverse backgrounds come together to create inclusive, vibrant communities. His journey from a machinist to a visionary real estate developer highlights the power of vision, creativity, drive, discipline, and hard work. Through Tien Sher Group, he has transformed Whalley and is now poised to bring similar positive change to Penticton. As he continues to shape communities and mentor future generations, Charan Sethi's legacy inspires and uplifts countless individuals, particularly within the South Asian community.

YCT also launched Arpan Kitchen, Arpan Bakery, and Arpan Café, providing real community jobs.
“When we decided to set up YCT, we didn't want to engage in typical shelter workshop activities like painting diyas, making agarbatis and soap. We also knew that this wasn’t the place where individuals were charged fees to come and be occupied. At that point, I visited a friend of mine who was running a dabba (tiffin) service from home. And I thought, not try this? Food is an equalizer, and
food is important to any community. So, we brought her expertise and tiffin service into our 200-square-foot space and started with five beneficiaries,” informs Nagarkar.
Emphasizing the core beliefs of YCT — inclusivity, acceptance, and empowerment, Nagarkar states, “It's important to build supportive systems around these individuals, recognizing them as valued members of society who bring value to the larger community. Addressing the challenges of changing society’s perception of PwIDD, she says, “When we began the dabba services, the neighbourhood was shocked. They could see that these individuals, who traditionally were put away, and who you didn’t see out on the streets unless with their parents, were now going to the vegetable vendors, buying groceries, and going in rickshaws to deliver dabbas independently. I got questions like, ‘You are sending them all alone, aren’t you scared?’ So, there was a lot of nervousness in the community. We had to build that confidence in the people around us. But now we are in a good place. The community recognizes all our members as they walk to-and-fro in their aprons and caps and everyone is friendly and accepting.”
Nagarkar adds, “Their families had to trust us with the process. We told the families that whatever we are doing has to be important to us, community-based, and inclusive. We are empowering each one of them to be a part of the community through what we do. The result is everyone is happy. Some of our guys, from lower-income families now contribute to the family income, while others save money for themselves.”
YCT has two verticals — a Skill Development Centre and Adult Support Kendra. Nagarkar explains, “The F&B space is relatively easy to teach. Are you looking for the right way to lose body fat and keep it off? If so, keep reading. I will provide a quick and sustainable fat-loss recipe. When people seek a quick fix, they often end up on a crash diet that is bound to fail. These restrictive diets frequently lead to frustration and a cycle of binge eating. The result? Not only does the lost body fat return, but often,
Weight training is essential for anyone looking to lose body fat properly. It increases lean muscle mass, burns fat, boosts metabolic rate, and strengthens joints, tendons, and ligaments. Training with weights 2-4 times a week is optimal for most people. There is no single best training split, but here are some general guidelines: research indicates that muscle tension and progressive overload are key principles for sustained lean muscle growth. In simple terms, this means feeling the burn during the exercises and changing a variable each week. This could involve adjusting the number of reps, sets, or the amount of weight used. Lastly, aim for 10-20 sets per muscle group to optimize your results!
more is gained because the metabolism has slowed down and adapted to the low-calorie intake.
This is why I advocate for creating healthy exercise and nutrition habits. By adopting this approach, you can achieve long-term results. What is my strategy for sustainable fat loss? Check out these five ways.
To lose weight, establishing a healthy calorie deficit is vital. You can accomplish this by reducing your calorie intake, increasing your physical activity, or combining both. How large should the deficit be? Aiming for a 200-500 calorie deficit daily is ideal for effective results. Focus on reducing calories from fats and carbohydrates, rather than protein, to prevent muscle loss during your calorie deficit (more on this later).
As a society, we have increasingly become sedentary due to specific jobs, lifestyles, Netflix, and other factors. It's important to counteract this by incorporating activities like walking and staying active.
Walking is a form of cardio that utilizes fat as fuel, allowing you to burn fat while being low-impact and avoiding soreness the next day. Naturally, the next question you might have is how many steps I should take in a day. Aim for about 8000-10000 steps.
In addition to fat burning, walking offers numerous benefits. It improves cardiovascular health, enhances mood by releasing endorphins, and helps maintain joint flexibility and mobility. Unlike intense HIIT workouts, which can leave you exhausted and immobile for the rest of the day, walking is not as demanding and can lead to higher caloric output.
Protein plays a crucial role in a fat-loss diet. It increases calorie burn, promotes satiety, supports workout recovery, and helps maintain muscle mass during a calorie deficit. So, how much protein should you aim for each day? A good target is about 0.73 grams of protein per pound of body weight. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should consume around 110 grams of protein daily.
Water is an often underrated component of fat loss. It aids in appetite regulation, is calorie-free, improves workout performance, boosts metabolism, and helps with water retention. Daily water requirements differ for men and women: men should aim for about 3.7 litres per day, while women should aim for 2.7 litres per day.
All in all, when looking to lose body fat, following these steps is crucial, and it is the recipe you need. That said, how do you know you are making progress? I recommend using tools beyond the scale to measure your results. Why? Because solely relying on the scale won't give you a complete picture. Instead, take measurements and before-and-after pictures. Additionally, pay attention to how your clothes fit. This doesn't mean you shouldn't use the scale at all, but don't let it be your only method of tracking results. Otherwise, you might not see how far you've truly come!

Registered Clinical Counsellor, Jasmine Gill, underscores the transformative power of journaling, "Journaling allows a space to dialogue with yourself about what emotions and reactions you are having to something."
One of the primary benefits of journaling is its ability to facilitate emotional awareness and expression. Gill explains, "It forces us to confront how we feel about something, simply by naming what is happening both externally (about an event, or situation) and internally (how we feel about it)." This process not only clarifies emotions but also fosters introspection, enabling individuals to navigate complex feelings in a safe, structured manner. Moreover, journaling provides a sanctuary for thoughts that might be difficult to verbalize. "If you are struggling with a relationship dynamic — whether with parents, a partner, or friends — and are worried about what to say to that person and how they might take it, writing a letter to them that you do not send can be a wonderful way of fully expressing your emotions without having to put yourself in a vulnerable position directly with them.", Gill notes. Journaling offers a safe space, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like relationships or personal challenges.
Another compelling aspect of journ aling is its capacity to rewrite personal narratives. "We can’t change what’s happened in the past, but we can try to change how it impacts us in the pres ent. Journalling allows just that. By revisiting a painful memory or internal narra tive we have about a chal lenging event, we can reflect on what we would have wanted differently. We can change the ending, change the dialogue, and write what we might have wanted to say, but in the moment, for whatever reason, couldn’t.", emphasizes Gill. As such, reflecting on past experiences through writing enables individu als to revise perspectives, imagine different outcomes,

and heal emotional wounds. It is a way to process and reshape how past events continue to impact our present. Gill points out that the beauty of journaling is that it is supposed to be messy; it can be an unedited collection of thoughts, emotions or ideas. For those new to journaling and wanting more structure, Gill offers insightful prompts to spark reflection and engagement:
• Looking back at the day, what made me feel emotional? How do those emotions sit in my body? What am I most aware of in my body?
• What are 5 things I am feeling grateful for in my life?
• How do I want others to perceive me? And is that how I perceive myself?
• Think back to a time when I felt proud of myself. Who was there? Reflect on how that experience was, in detail. And how do I feel now thinking about it?
• If I could tell someone I cared about this feeling that I am feeling right now, without censoring myself, what would I say, and how do I imagine that person would respond to me?
While prompts offer a structured entry point into journaling, you may come up with your own ideas as well. The intention is to encourage a range of introspective explorations, helping with self-awareness, emotional processing, creativity, and achieving personal and professional goals.
Whether used for daily reflections, emotional processing, or goal setting, journaling serves as a versatile tool for personal growth and self-discovery. Integrating journaling into daily routines can foster emotional resilience and promote mental clarity. By embracing this practice, individuals can cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves, nurture emotional health, and embark on a journey of personal transformation!

Salim Merchant's journey is a masterclass in dedication, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of artistic excellence. Through his music, Salim continues to touch hearts and inspire minds, embodying the true spirit of a musical genius.
By Monica Sethi
Salim Merchant, one half of the iconic Salim-Sulaiman duo, is synonymous with soul-stirring melodies and profound musical innovation.
Born into a family steeped in musical tradition, Salim's journey into the music industry was a natural progression. His father was a composer, and this familial connection to music ignited his passion from a young age.
Formally trained at the Trinity College of Music in London, Salim mastered the piano and returned to India, diving into Bollywood as a session musician. His versatility and skill quickly made him a sought-after name in the industry. Reflecting on his influences, Salim credits veteran composer Madan Mohan and tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain as pivotal figures in shaping his musical style.
Among his myriad projects, "Chak De! India" holds a special place in Salim's heart. The film's inspiring theme and the challenge of creating a sports anthem pushed him to his limits, but the result was a timeless soundtrack that resonates with audiences even today. Another milestone was the soundtrack for "Kurbaan," where Salim and his brother Sulaiman explored Islamic Sufi music, expanding their musical repertoire and touching new emotional depths.
Salim's collaboration with his brother Sulaiman is a cornerstone of his career. Their partnership thrives on mutual respect, creative exchange, and the ability to challenge each other. This dynamic has allowed them to create music that reflects their combined energies and diverse influences. Together, they have navigated numerous challenges, including the intense pressure of composing for high-profile films like "Chak De! India" and "Aaja Nachle."
The evolution of the Indian music industry, especially with the advent of digital platforms and social media, has been significant. Salim acknowledges that while promoting music is easier today, the core of making music remains unchanged. He advises aspiring musicians to view music as an art form rather than a mere profession. He emphasizes the importance of formal training, understanding music theory, and the continuous pursuit
of knowledge through available digital resources.
Beyond music, Salim enjoys driving and playing video games, though his primary passion remains creating melodies that touch the soul. His upcoming project, "Bhoomi 24," promises to be a musical extravaganza featuring iconic singers from India and beyond. This project, set to release around Diwali 2024, reflects Salim's commitment to exploring new musical territories and collaborating with diverse artists.

For some of us, the arrival of warm weather heralds the dreaded spectre of donning a bathing suit and other revealing clothing. During the cooler months, when covered up with cozy layers, it’s much easier to ignore those diet-resistant trouble spots on our bodies.
Shifting stubborn fat deposits is often impossible despite a good diet and regular exercise and could be attributed to factors like age, pregnancy or a surgical procedure. In the not-so-distant past, invasive cosmetic medical procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks were seen as the only solutions: that or just accepting the status quo. As with everything else, technological advancements have ushered in options for effectively reshaping one’s body. These days medi-spas offer non-invasive, low-risk treatments for correcting various problem spots.
Heat, produced by monopolar radio frequency is an increasingly popular way to improve trouble spots like the abdomen and produce results for some individuals in as early as six weeks. Whereas with Cool Sculpting, the freezing of fat cells, results are evident over time, usually months to see the full effect, and can also
have the rare side effect of making the fat cells larger.
Thermage, a monopolar radiofrequency machine, is one of the effective treatments for reducing fat and recontouring, says Ruby Dillon, owner of North Vancouver’s Deva Med Spa & Body Contouring.
The heat is conducted via a single-use tip on a grounding pad that is attached to the device. There are different tips for various parts of the body that allows for different depth of heat penetration.
“So you select the area that you want to do,” Dillon says. “Then you mark it as a special grid you can mark it with, and then you do the treatment according to a preset protocol.”
Results can be noticeable in as little as six weeks depending on how may treatments are done in that timeframe.
Dillon says the clinic also employs another form of heat for fat reduction: Ultherapy that uses ultrasound heat instead of radio frequency. “That’s a good one too on the face and on the body. The results take a little bit longer, though, to see. So, if you're on the face, you're probably looking at one to three months to see results; on the body, you know, perhaps about the same amount of time.”
Both treatments provide the benefits of tightening the skin and boosting collagen, and the effects can last up to two years. Deciding between the two types depends on individual concerns and time schedule.
Another body sculpting option is to combine muscle toning with fat reduction which is what Cutera is recommending with their truBody approach which utilizes both their truScupt (which is monopolar radio frequency heat) and truFlex muscle-toning machines to achieve optimum, long-lasting results.
“We know from having these devices for so long that the best results come from when you reduce fat and build muscle at the same time,” says Katie Neff, marketing director for truBody by Cutera.
Neff says the best way to lose weight is by strengthening your muscles, so integrating the two treatments is an ideal approach.
“We're able to claim with truSculpt, which is the fat reduction, 24 per cent less fat per treatment area after 12 weeks.” Neff explains “And then with truFlex, we're able to claim up to 30 per cent increase in muscle mass, which, you know, muscle mass is like just what everybody wants to live a long life, to have muscle tone, to be stronger, to stand up straighter.”
She says that it’s not only an effective technology but that it doesn’t take much time out of your day, especially compared to the time spent at the gym to achieve similar results. Dillon says that Crestotherapy, a lymphatic drainage treatment, is beneficial and produces timely, noticeable improvements—such as less bloating, puffiness and fat reduction. “So, you're basically draining the lymphatic system,” she says.
For another non-surgical but slightly invasive method to combat cellulite and fat deposits, there’s Lipodissolve, a certified injectable that purportedly destroys fat cells permanently in targeted areas. Some studies have stated it can be as effective as liposuction and of all the medi-spa treatments provides the longest lasting results.
Although, these treatments are considered safe, they aren’t suitable for everyone. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid them, as should anyone diabetic. Dillon says these treatments are for healthy people with a BMI of less than 30 who just have stubborn body fat they can't get rid of any other way. However, it's not a weight loss program.

Q: How did you meet?
We first met in 2019 while hanging out with our friends in downtown Vancouver.
Q: What do you love the most about one another?
Iqveer : What I admire most about Ranvir is his genuine compassion and selfless nature. He always prioritizes others above himself. He is truly the best human in this world.
Ranvir : The first thing I noticed was Iqveer's smile. She always has a positive attitude and outlook on life.
Q: Could you share your proposal story?
In December 2022, we flew to New York for a Christmas trip. Ranvir was randomly selected for a secondary check during our layover at Toronto Pearson Airport. He was sweating as security went through his stuff, and I wondered why he was so stressed. The security officer laughed when they found the ring in his jacket pocket. Ranvir later proposed in front of the Christmas tree at the Lotte New York Hotel.
Q: Describe your wedding day and your favourite moment.
Our wedding day ran very smoothly. We organized everything a month before the wedding with a rundown and a list of what was needed. Our favourite moment of the wedding was right after the lavaan when we were finally stress-free and knew everything was done.
Q: Could you tell us about your reception?
Our reception very classy and elegant. Our wonderful décor team, Evergreen Events, created a beautiful ballroom theme with a black background, white arches, flowers and candles. The décor was absolutely gorgeous we were left speechless.
Q: How was your experience with the photography team? Would you recommend it to others?
The photography and videography team we had – Amaster Media, were very professional and efficient; they gave their 100% throughout the wedding week and knew what poses we should do to make us feel comfortable. Our families were in awe after seeing the excellent next-day edit they made to show a recap of our wedding week. Everyone even now, talks about the next day's edit.
Q: Can you describe your outfits?
Our engagement was in the backyard, and my outfit from Shyamal & Bhumika
was very simple and elegant. The vibe for the wedding day was classy and traditional, and our outfits were both from Made in India. The look we wanted for the reception was glitz and glam. My outfit was from Payal Keyal, and Ranvir's tuxedo was from House of Mauka.
Q: Where did you go for your honeymoon?
We wanted a relaxing honeymoon to explore each city's richness. We went to Bali, Thailand, and Singapore for three weeks, visiting nine different cities.
Q: What are your favourite quotes?
Our favourite quote is something we posted for our reception: "It's like, at that moment, the whole universe existed just to bring us together." - Serendipity.
We resonate with this quote as we truly believe fate allowed us to find each other right before covid.
Q: What are your goals as a couple?
Our goal as a couple is to continue to build on our love and friendship.
Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?
The strength of our marriage has been open communication.
Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?
Always put each other first, no matter the situation or circumstances.

hen the latest model debuted a couple years back, it represented the first Acura SUV to wear the vaunted Type-S badge reserved for only the sportiest of offerings. And the designation is justified, as this big 355-horsepower three-row crossover is just a screamer that will put a smile on the whole family’s face while on a road trip or just a run to the grocery store. The exterior hints at what’s underneath the bodywork via enhancements over the standard version. Besides the obvious additional emblems, there’s the larger functional air intakes and a centre-mounted intercooler in the front bumper, a lip spoiler and a Diamond Pentagon grille with finer mesh to increase air flow to the turbocharged engine.

At the rear quad exhaust tips flank a straked lower diffuser, all-over gloss black trim and a pair of Brembo brakes peeking out from behind the 21-inch Berlina Black machine finish alloy wheel — shod in self-sealing 275/40/21 Continental CrossContact RX ContiSeal tires — round out the package. Inside, the performance-minded styling continues. For example, a flat bottom steering wheel greets the driver as well as a 12.3-inch Acura Precision Cockpit digital instrument display. The infotainment screen is also 12.3 inches and is fairly intuitive complemented by a smattering of physical buttons. Curiously, designers installed a volume knob and then a set of left and right tuning buttons rather than a second knob that would have made quickly navigating media so much easier.
It’s my first time seeing massaging front seats in an Acura and colour me impressed. Users can customize the zones and intensity in nine different ways (Wave, Shiatsu, Step, Awake, Fusion, Lower Back, Upper Back, Rejuvenation and Zen), even targeting the cushion area, and in my opinion provided better mobile relief than the chairs in a Mercedes-Benz. The perforated leather upholstery looked and felt premium, and the 25-speaker ELS Studio Signature Edition stereo sounded fantastic.
Another thing that sounds amazing is the 3.0-litre Type S Turbo V6 mill, delivering 355 horsepower, 354 lb-ft of torque and some glorious noise out of the Active Exhaust — particularly in Sport or Sport+ mode, which are part of the Integrated Dynamics System.
In addition, these modes drop the first MDX application of an air suspension 15 millimetres to lower the centre of gravity, stiffens the dampers, sharpens throttle response and firms up steering. Operating the vehicle in such a manner really makes one momentarily forget they’re behind the wheel of an SUV. To get back in the utility mindset, the air suspension may conversely raise the ride height nearly 50 millimetres in Lift mode to improve ground clearance and help clear deep or sand. Acura says it’s not intended for off-road purposes.
The crossover makes a great daily driver that’s practical, with enough room to fit seven people, and is a hoot to drive. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and torque vectoring ensures proper traction even in the windy bits and in inclement Lower Mainland weather. Engineered primarily in America, manufacturing takes place at the company’s East Liberty, Ohio facility.
ven those auto enthusiasts not normally a fan of EVs may change their minds after a spin in this electric rocket from the Mercedes-AMG camp.
One of the better-looking electric examples from the German luxury manufacturer, the EQE 4MATIC+ Sedan features a shorter wheelbase than bigger brother the EQS, slick body aero, rear truck lip spoiler, and flush-mounted wheels up to 21-inches. This all helps the vehicle appear a little less egg-shaped than the rest of the EQ lineup, particularly when sprayed in darker colours like the stealthy Obsidian Black Metallic paint.

emotional driving experience with our AMG-specific solutions. This applies in particular to the areas of drive, chassis, brakes and, above all, sound. This ensures that our customers can also look forward to our brand’s hallmark Driving Performance in our second all-electric model series,” says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, in a news release. The interior is dominated by the optional MBUX Hyperscreen (+ $9,900) that combines the instrument cluster and two infotainment screens into a massive 56-inch screen. A high level of comfort and generous use of luxury materials is on brand, and the Pinnacle Trim Package (+ $5,000) equipped on our press loaner added the Air Balance System (dual charcoal
filters, ionizer and fragrance), head-up display, six 100-watt USB-C charging ports around the cabin and more. Curiously, the heated steering wheel must be activated by voice control as there’s no physical switch.
Audiophiles will appreciate the high-end German Burmester stereo, which also powers the aforementioned AMG Sound Experience generating a variety of whimsical spaceship sounds depending on the current drive mode selected and throttle position. The second row is fairly roomy for the segment, and compared to many fixed-glass-roof EVS the panoramic sunroof is actually capable of tilt and slide functionality to bring in some fresh air on a clear day. The sporty sloped roof unfortunately reduces the rear window to a sliver.
Under the bodywork are two electric motors, totalling 460 watts, creating all-wheel drive and a combined output of 617 horsepower and a massive 701 lb-ft of torque. A 328-volt high-capacity battery supplies the propulsion energy and yields a maximum drive range in the neighbourhood of 500 kilometres per full charge. Compatible with Level 3 chargers up to 170 kilowatts, if plugged into such a station up to 180 kilometres of travel distance can be added in approximately 15 minutes.
When activated, a RACE START mode temporarily bumps up the numbers to 677 and 738 lb-ft torque for a short burst of performance. Needless to say, the EQE Sedan is seriously quick and the acceleration is literally breathtaking when you step hard on the pedal. Big six-piston brake calipers slow things back down quickly.
Thanks to 3.6-degree rear-axle steering, it’s quite nimble too in city driving and provides compact-car-like turning radius making parking much easier.
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 4MATIC+ Sedan retails for an MSRP of $121,500.

Launched in 2020, the Honda Passport was intended to provide a Pilot-like experience in a smaller form factor. In 2024, the crossover is going full off-road ready with an updated TrailSport model packing special suspension, tires and more.
“The 2024 Passport lineup solidifies our decades-long commitment to building capable, comfortable and rugged SUVs for Canadians and their families,” says Steve Hui, Honda Canada assistant vice president, in a press release. “The Passport TrailSport comes with its best off-road capable performance ever.”
Still featuring the same styling enhancements introduced two years ago when the Trailsport variant initially launched, the chunky black mesh grille,
silver skid plate-adorned bumpers and 10-millimetre greater track width over the regular version help the vehicle look the part.
Specialty orange badges are affixed to both ends, and the 18-inch Pewter-coated wheels are for the first time wrapped in all-terrain tires (245/60/18 General Grabber A/T) to improve grip on dirt, sand, mud, snow and/ or rock-covered surfaces. A Diffused Sky Blue exterior paint colour is newly available.
A revised cabin brings a fresh centre console that has a roomy integrated armrest and expanded storage, boasting enough capacity to fit a full-size tablet. The tray in front of the shifter is larger as well able to accommodate two large smartphones side-by-side. The
Q. How long have you been associated with Nissan, and what initially drew you to the brand?
I have been in the automotive industry for over 34 years and have worked with Nissan/Infiniti for over 12 years. I opened up a new state-of-the-art Infiniti dealership in Langley, where we showcased the incredible Infiniti brand. From there, I moved over to the Nissan brand in Port Coquitlam. I was intrigued by Nissan's innovative approach of launching vehicles ahead of their time and by their long history of sports cars and stylish SUVs. Nissan has been a worldwide brand for a long time, and I was happy to join their team.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?
My husband and I immigrated to Canada in 2019 for several reasons. Canada offers incredible opportunities for personal and professional growth with supportive social policies. Compared to Delhi, there’s negligible pollution, plenty of open spaces, provincial parks, etc. The crime rate is not as alarming as that in India. We were also drawn to Canada’s multicultural society, where diversity is celebrated. Overall, Canada felt like a decent place to build our future.
Which year did you migrate?
November 2019
What were your first impressions of Canada?
We were struck by the country’s natural beauty and the multicultural atmosphere. The vibrant cities and well-organized communities made settling in exciting and comfortable.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?
Air BNB
What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?
We moved around two months before COVID came in. Job opportunities were limited, and we could not travel back to India. We also felt that career opportunities could be better here.
How long did it take to get used to the people, weather or the surroundings?
It took us a few months to understand cultural nuances, adjust to the climate (especially winters), and familiarize ourselves with the local communities and amenities. Over time, we grew more comfortable. We have a good social circle and live in a very friendly Burlington neighbourhood.
How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?
It took my husband almost a year to land a job. However, he managed to set up his business and did quite well in 2020 before he got a job.
I continue to work on a contractual basis with an Indian company and have my own business in the events space in Canada. Our experience suggests that personal businesses are more rewarding than working at a corporation.
What do you like and dislike most about this country?
It is a carefree society. The country’s natural beauty and commitment to environmental sustainability are also impressive. As for dislikes, the cost of living in some areas can be high, which can be a consideration depending on the location.
How do you see your future in Canada?
Relaxed and rewarding
How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?
It has been a mixed bag. Uprooting from your established work environment to create a new life in a new country is no easy task.
Embrace diversity, network and connect, stay positive, learn some winter activities and sports to be able to enjoy the weather.
