“
Increasing diversity has always been the goal of any strong, viable, and good police department. They will always say recruiting from the community to reflect the community is a priority.”
Deputy Chief Constable Steve
Rai’s career with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is an inspiring story of dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to both law enforcement and community service. Embarking on a remarkable journey that would see him rise to one of the highest ranks in the VPD, Rai started his career with the VPD in 1990 as a frontline patrol constable.
Reflecting on his roots, Rai has often emphasized the importance of his cultural background in shaping his approach to policing. Drawing on his cultural experience has been key in serving the Vancouver’s ethnically diverse communities. He shares, “Increasing diversity has always been the goal of any strong, viable, and good police department. They will always say recruiting from the community
to reflect the community is a priority.” As per Rai, the VPD is the most diverse police force in the province and ranks among the top five for diversity in the country.
Attributing his success to his willingness to embrace challenges and remain open to learning, Rai says, “I never said no to anything. It’s easy to say no, but saying yes helps you grow. Whether it was writing a warrant at 3:00 am, near the end of my shift, or stepping into the field late at night in the rain, I always said yes. By accepting every challenge, I gained a wealth of experience at a very young age.”
For aspiring recruits, Rai’s advice is to make good decisions and have fun, but also be mindful that some choices will have a long-term impact; the goal should be to pursue interests while prioritizing education, taking care of health, and striving to grow into a well-rounded individu-
al with a broad perspective on the world. Rai highlights, “I wanted a profession that had teamwork in it and that would look different every day. In 34 years, I’ve had probably 17 different careers within my vocation. Every 2 or 3 years, I do something different. Moreover, I’ve never regretted my career choice! I’d do it all over again, and VPD feels like a second home. With our attrition rate below 1%, it’s clear that no one quits; they retire, but they don’t quit.”
If you’re considering a career in policing, Rai’s journey exemplifies firsthand that VPD addresses a wide spectrum of issues and offers diverse, rewarding opportunities beyond crime fighting. These include working with young people, families, women, the elderly, and even tech crime. As Rai puts it, “This truly is a career that offers everything!”

As President and CEO, what are some key areas of growth that you will focus on?
Surrey as a city is at a very exciting, critical juncture. Our community continues to grow rapidly, and we will soon be the biggest city in the province. The Surrey Hospitals Foundation wants to ensure that we grow Surrey’s facilities and programs to deliver exceptional healthcare across our diverse community, not just now but in the future.
Our donors have such an important role to play in this. In addition to funding urgent needs like what has been done for cardiac catheterization labs, the Foundation will introduce a new Pillars of Care model, which will offer donors the chance to champion specific areas of healthcare that are close to their hearts.
What are some challenges that you’ve already faced in your new role?
Managing growth, I think, is a key theme. We have big plans and a bold vision for supporting our region’s healthcare needs. I have been in the role for six months now and feel responsible for delivering for this community and addressing our needs across facilities.
While not necessarily a challenge, my real focus is building culture and investing in the Foundation team. We have an amazing new team with so much passion and talent. I am very mindful of the importance of fostering a strong, supportive culture where people want to work, not only because it is the right thing to do on the people side of things but also because it’s essential to meet our ambitious goals.
With the recent healthcare crisis at Surrey Memorial Hospital, how do you hope the Foundation's work will transform care for residents south of the Fraser?
It’s worthwhile to note that Surrey is home to several healthcare facilities that the Foundation supports. In addition to Surrey Memorial Hospital, we also have the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care & Surgery Centre and the wonderful Czorny Alzheimer Centre. To be added soon is the new hospital in Cloverdale (currently under construction) and a new critical care tower at Surrey Memorial. Surrey is a diverse community, making it a fantastic and logical place for research. Surrey Memorial is already the location of many research studies. SFU is opening a medical school in Surrey. I see an enormous opportunity to establish Surrey as a healthcare research hub.
As a Métis, Jamaican, Scottish, and Welsh woman, how has your heritage influenced your career path?
We are all products of our upbringing and experiences. My parents overcame many hardships to provide my siblings and me with a secure, loving home and opportunities that weren’t available to them. As core values, they instilled in us a belief that we could do anything if we worked hard towards it, that we should treat all people equally with kindness and respect, and that we should be responsible for giving back to our community. As a woman of color, my mother overcame many barriers common to her time. These values naturally drew me to the charitable sector, where
The South Asian community has a long history of being incredibly generous donors. I look forward to working with you to ensure that we can provide the best healthcare possible, now and in the future.”
I embrace the opportunity to help improve some of our most complex social issues.
What is your vision for inclusivity within the Foundation and its work in healthcare for Surrey?
Inclusivity within the Foundation team is so important – none of this is possible without a team that is committed to the vision and empowered to bring their best to work daily. To achieve this, we must create a space that allows diversity of thought, inclusion, and empowerment. It is important to include our partners in this work, many of who are your readers, our donors, the facilities, and healthcare workers who play a pivotal role in helping make these goals and visions possible. Surrey is home to a wonderfully diverse population, and it is particularly important to consider inclusivity when choosing which initiatives we fund.
How will your leadership style differ from the former President and CEO Jane Adams?
I never had the pleasure of working with Jane, but I met with her following my appointment to the
role. She was incredibly gracious and passionate about supporting the region's healthcare needs. One thing I know about leadership lies in the saying: we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Jane led the Foundation through so many great successes and growth, bringing us to this point and time. I know there is still a lot of work ahead of us, and I am committed to advancing this growth for all of our residents.
What past projects have you taken pride in that the Foundation has executed?
The Foundation has achieved so much with the community, and there is much to be proud of. Since I started, I have been inspired by the pride and passion of our staff, and we want to continue to support attracting and retaining the best people to our facilities.
Looking ahead, we are excited to see the new kidney care unit open next year. The unit will have 21 new dialysis stations, bringing the total to 60 at Surrey Memorial Hospital, enabling the hospital to help more patients and lessen wait times.
Tell us about some upcoming projects the Foundation is working on.
We are in the final stretch of the $10 million campaign to build two cardiac catheterization labs at Surrey Memorial Hospital. $8 million raised, $2 million to go. Given heart disease is the leading cause of death among people 65 and older, we really need to have this care available south of the Fraser.
We look forward to announcing an expansion of our cancer services, including establishing a regional surgical robotics program at Surrey Memorial. We have recently approved funding for ultrasounds for the highest-risk pregnancies and support for CareLife Fleetwood, the only long-term care facility in the region that accommodates residents requiring ventilated breathing support.
With nearly 25 years of experience in the corporate and non-profit sectors, what's your strategy for creating impact through your work for Surrey residents?
One of the biggest things I learned is that nothing is accomplished alone. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many incredible leaders, many of whom attribute their success to the support and guidance of those around them, and I’d have to agree. These are big issues we are tackling at the Foundation, and to truly drive impact, we have to listen to Surrey residents about their needs and concerns.
What message would you like to share with the South Asian community?
Firstly, our gratitude, you are such a critical partner in the work we do, and great advocates for our city. We want you to know that the Foundation, the hospitals, and the dedicated staff are here for you. The South Asian community has a long history of being incredibly generous donors. I look forward to working with you to ensure that we can provide the best healthcare possible, now and in the future.

"At first, I didn't like it because it was really hard. Then I started focusing on it, and now I like it as I'm good at it." “
Khushi Kaur Jhalli, a 15-year -old wrestling prodigy from Surrey, has already made an indelible mark on the Canadian sports scene. Attending Guildford Park Secondary School, Khushi has emerged as a formidable force in the 69kg weight category, earning three national medals. Recently, she added a prestigious silver medal from the Pan American Championships in the Dominican Republic to her collection, further solidifying her status as a rising star.
Khushi's journey into wrestling began four years ago, inspired by her father, a kabaddi enthusiast. Despite initially lacking enthusiasm due to the sport's challenging nature, Khushi's determination and perseverance soon saw her embracing wrestling wholeheartedly. "At first, I didn't like it because it was really hard, but then I started focusing on it, and now I really like it because I'm good at it," she shares. Her daily routine shows her dedication, with two hours of morning practice followed by four hours in the evening.
Her short-term goal is to clinch the World Championship title, while her long-term aspiration is to win gold at the Olympics. "I know that I need to practice hard to get there, so I focus on that," she says, illustrating her unwavering commitment.
Competitions like the Pan American Championships are nerve-wracking, and Khushi often faces older and stronger opponents. Despite being one of the youngest competitors, her resolve remains unshaken. "I get nervous a lot from the tournaments. Sometimes it's hard because the girls are stronger or older than me," she admits. Yet, she thrives on the pressure, focusing on her performance rather than the competition.
Khushi's rigorous training schedule is both gruelling and disciplined. Her typical day starts at 5 AM, with morning training sessions followed by evening practices at her club. This disciplined approach extends beyond the mat, as she maintains a balance between her sport and academics.
Sponsorship remains a critical aspect of her journey. Financial support is essential due to the high costs associated with participating in international tournaments. Khushi points out that while the Canadian government does not sponsor her trips, sponsorships can help alleviate the financial burden.
She advises young athletes, especially those from the South Asian community, to embrace sports. "Just join a sport, even if you don't want to at first. I never wanted to join wrestling, but once I did, it became a big part of my life," she encourages. Her journey showcases the transformative power of sports, instilling discipline, resilience, and a sense of purpose.
As Khushi prepares for the World Wrestling Championship in Jordan, her eyes are set on greater achievements. With her family's unwavering support, especially from her father and brother, Khushi Kaur Jhalli is poised to continue her ascent in the wrestling world.
urrey’s Jasneet Nijjar is not just an athlete with glorious sprinting times but also an inspiration to uncountable young South Asians in Canada & around the world. As the first South Asian female to represent Canada in track & field at the Olympics, her story is one of relentless determination and grit. DARPAN recently spoke to this 23-year-old trailblazer about her journey into athletics, experiences at the Olympics, and more.
Following the footsteps of her older siblings, Jasneet began her sprinting journey at the tender age of seven. She soon started training at the Universal Athletics Club in North Surrey under coach Jessie Dosanjh. “I tried everything in track & field,” Jasneet recalls, “but sprinting excited me the most. I’ve always been very competitive. Even as a child, I wanted to win every race, whether it was against my brother or anyone else.” Her natural talent became evident as she progressed in her athletic career and started competing at higher levels. In 2018, she brought home gold in the 200-meter category at the Canada Junior Track & Field Championships in Ottawa. That same year, she also won triple gold at the BC High School Track & Field Championships, a feat only two others have matched since the competition began.
In 2019, she went on to major in kinesiology and psychology at Washington State University, a strategic move to better her career in athletics. “Washington State University has always been known for its competitive NCAA program; I knew it would push me to become a better athlete,” she says.
Her rigorous, consistent training in Pullman, Washington, bore fruit when she made it to Team Canada’s roster in the women’s 4x400 meter relay at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, undoubtedly a historic moment for her & the entire South Asian community in Canada.
By Ancy Mendonza
Participating in the Paris Olympics is a huge feat for any sportsperson, but for Jasneet, it was beyond that—a moment to create history. “It was surreal when I found out I made the team. Being on the biggest stage with the most incredible athletes was an experience I will always remember,” she says.
And she does not plan to stop just here! Her eyes are set on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, as she trains to compete in the individual 400-meter event. “This is just the beginning. I want to pursue the individual 400-metre in 2028, & I’m determined to make that happen,” she asserts. She is currently a member of the Washington State Cougars track team & looks forward to competing at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next year.
Besides all her athletic achievements, Jasneet’s greatest pride comes from her impact on the younger generation. “My biggest achievement is seeing all these young kids looking up to me,” she says with a heartwarming smile. “Being a role model, especially as a South Asian woman in sports, means a lot to me.”
Her message to the community, par ticularly young South Asians wanting to enter sports, is simple yet profound: “Take any oppor tunity that comes your way. Believe in yourself & chase your dreams. No dream is too small or too big.”
When she’s not on track, Jasneet enjoys the beautiful hikes of British Columbia, her favorites being the Stawamus Chief & the Grouse Grind, & immersing herself in books that motivate. Her recent pick is The Boys in the Boat James Brown, as she finds parallels in her own life as an athlete. For her, these moments of deep reflection & physical & mental balance are important to maintaining the strength she needs for high-level competitions.
As Jasneet sprints towards setting new goals for herself, her journey is one that inspires everyone with a dream, not just athletes. She’s not just running for herself but blazing a trail for generations to come, proving that with hard work & determination, ain’t no mountain high enough!

Stay true to your craft and keep the hard work going because sooner or later, things do start rolling. I am a living testament to this. As long as you're showing up every day and working on your craft, you are on the right track because talent sells.”
Ravishing beauty Hasleen Kaur, a rising force in the OTT world after her standout roles in CAT and Mili is savoring the rewards of her dedication and patience. Her remarkable journey from an army daughter to a celebrated model, beauty pageant titleholder, and actor exemplifies perseverance and self-belief, navigating challenges and seizing opportunities with unwavering determination.
THE GENESIS OF STARDOM
Hasleen’s foray into the world of modeling was not a straightforward path. It began with her participation in a modest pageant called the May Queen Ball, a platform for daughters of Army, Air Force, and Navy officers. "It was more about grooming and building confidence," Hasleen reflects. Winning the pageant, with the jury including renowned figures like Gul Panag, JJ Valaya, Ambika Pillai, and Rahul Dutta, was a significant boost. Dutta’s offer of a free portfolio and feature on a talent hub

website opened doors to modeling assignments in Delhi.
“Winning was a stroke of luck and opportunity. It wasn’t a deliberate choice, but it set the stage for what was to come,” Hasleen says. Her burgeoning modeling career led to a series of assignments year after year, establishing her in the fashion industry. Despite her initial success, Hasleen faced a crucial decision: to pursue a career in advertising and public relations, which she had a degree in, or to dive into the world of beauty pageants and acting. She chose the latter, participating in Miss India, which changed her life trajectory.
Winning Miss India in 2011 was monumental, but transitioning to Bollywood was far from easy. Hasleen signed her debut film in 2013, but the film tanked, and gloom set it. This initial setback was a tough pill to swallow. “The movie bombed, and I didn’t receive any offers immediately after. The journey became very treacherous at some point,” she admits. Eventually, her persistence paid off with significant roles in glowing projects like CAT and Mili.
Owing to her army background, Hasleen attributes her discipline and resilience to her upbringing. This helped her navigate the unpredictability and instability of the entertainment industry. It was ingrained in her that hard work always pays off.
Rejections, a common aspect of an acting career, never pulled her back. “I was never the kind to give up. I knew that rejections were part of the journey, and I always bounced back with a positive mindset,” Hasleen says.
Breaking into Bollywood as an outsider is daunting, and Hasleen’s experience was no different. “It’s challenging to get noticed when you’re starting out, and it takes time for people to recognize your work,” she explains. Despite the initial lack of attention from producers and directors, Hasleen’s talent eventually spoke for itself. “Your work is what truly speaks for you. If you believe in your abilities and let your work do the
talking, you can overcome initial hurdles,” she notes.
Her big break came with Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. Working alongside celebrated actors like Dimple Kapadia and Ranbir Kapoor was a dream come true. She recalls, “Because it was my first time acting around Ranbir, I would get nervous, and he was cognizant of that. He would remind me of things like - Hasleen, your mark is over there. Okay, so my line is this; I'll give you the cue, and then you say this line.”
“Ranbir is a breeze to work with, and his integrity and ability to make everyone feel comfortable makes him the starboy he is!” she quips.
PREPARATION AND AUTHENTICITY IN ACTING
For her role in CAT, Hasleen underwent meticulous preparation. Playing a Punjab-based cop required thorough research and observation. “I visited Punjab and observed female cops to understand their behavior. I paid attention to details like the
cap and insignia to ensure authenticity,” she explains. This dedication to accuracy was crucial in portraying the character of Babita authentically and respectfully.
Hasleen maintains her fitness by exercising regularly, aiming for three to five days a week. She has moved away from fad diets and now follows a balanced, colorful vegetarian diet. “I ensure I get enough protein and enjoy festival treats without guilt. If I overindulge, I just work out a bit more,” she says.
Transcending beyond local frontiers, Hasleen recently signed an international indie action thriller titled Ruthless Bastards, with Canadian director Bruce Fontaine. She exclaims, “After my work in CAT, Bruce saw potential in me and believed that my look and acting skills suited the role. He arranged three weeks
of action training, leveraging my dance background to help with choreography, as action scenes are much like dance routines.”
To women aspiring to venture into the entertainment industry, she advises, “Stay true to your craft and keep the hard work going because sooner or later, things do start rolling. I am a living testament to this. As long as you're showing up every day and working on your craft, you are on the right track because talent sells.”
A modern-day testament to resilience, perseverance, and authenticity, Hasleen continues to inspire others with her story of overcoming challenges, seizing, and powering through it all.

The Paris 2024 Olympics was a rollercoaster of emotions, where the exhilarating highs of victory often overshadowed the crushing lows of defeat. Some moments had us cheering with pride, making us practically mimic-rehearse the post-win interviews to follow, while there were also those where hopelessness and jitters felt personal. From awe-inspiring achievements that had us all on our feet to unexpected twists that left us gasping, these games were nothing short of extraordinary. With its iconic landmarks and vibrant spirit, Paris set the stage for athletes to etch their names into history, albeit with some ‘banger’ and ‘bummer’ moments that we will rave about through generations.
Whether it’s a poignant goodbye, a surprising hero, or a nail-biting finish, these stories have defined the big fat sports gala.
From heartwarming to heart-wrenching to bone-tickling, here’s reminiscing the indelible!
ZING MOMENTS: PAKISTAN’S ARSHAD NADEEM’S MONUMENTAL JAVELIN-THROW SETTING A NEW RECORD AT THE OLYMPICS
Wonderboy Arshad Nadeem’s record-breaking javelin throw at an invincible 92.97 meters, or 305.02 feet, was a breathtaking display of athletic prowess and precision. As the javelin soared through the air, the crowd held its breath, knowing that Nadeem was on the verge of something extraordinary. The stadium erupted in astonishment and celebration when the javelin landed well beyond the previous world record mark. Nadeem’s throw not only secured him the gold medal but also shattered the long-standing record, marking a historic win for both him and Pakistan.
ZING MOMENTS: CHINA’S HUANG YAQIONG’S OMG MOMENT AS LIU YUCHEN POPS THE “GOLDEN” QUESTION
Chinese badminton player Liu Yuchen transformed a historic win into a magical proposal. After fellow player Huang Yaqiong’s impressive 21-8, 21-11 win with Zheng Siwei in the mixed doubles final, Liu Yuchen seized the moment to make it even more special. Amidst the celebration and falling confetti, he got down on one knee in the middle of the arena, his heart racing faster than the pace of the game. With Huang, a three-time world champion, glowing from triumph, Liu Yuchen proposed, turning the Olympic spotlight onto their personal milestone. As Huang accepted, the stadium erupted in cheers, blending their Olympic success with a proposal no short of goals for couples in tow.
ZING MOMENTS: DJ DOUBLES UP AS PEACEMAKER, DIFFUSES FRICTION BETWEEN BRAZIL AND CANADA BEACH VOLLEYBALL TEAMS
In a standout moment at the Paris Olympics, a DJ turned a tense beach volleyball showdown into an unexpectedly heartwarming scene. During the women's gold medal match, Canadian players Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson were locked in a heated exchange with Brazil’s Ana Patrícia Silva Ramos. With tempers flaring and a yellow card handed out, the atmosphere was charged. Then, the DJ dropped John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and the mood flipped. The iconic tune broke the ice, leading to laughter and applause from all four players. The crowd even joined in for an impromptu singalong, transforming a fiery moment into one of the Games’ most feel-good highlights.
ZING MOMENTS: TURKEY’S YUSUF DIKEÇ’S ULTIMATE ‘COOL UNDER PRESSURE’ PERFORMANCE
In a glowing moment that instantly went viral, Turkish sharpshooter Yusuf Dikeç made headlines in the most unassuming way possible. While the opponents braced themselves in their gear, Yusuf, dressed in a plain T-shirt, sporting his everyday glasses, and casually slipping a hand into his pocket, got the audience palpitating,
only to clinch the Olympic silver medal with an effortlessly cool demeanor. "I didn’t need any special equipment," he told the press, "I’m a natural, a natural shooter." His stone-cold confidence and relaxed style turned heads, and netizens could not stop applauding his fuss-free attitude.
French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati faced a unique and significant setback during his attempt at the 5.70-meter height when he cleared the bar but clipped it with his pecker. This unusual failure left commentators baffled and struggling to describe the incident. Despite finishing 12th place and missing the finals, Ammirati’s attempt quickly went viral, earning him a surge on social media. Ammirati humorously reflected on his newfound fame, sharing a video of himself eating pizza at the Olympic Village with the caption: “POV: you make more buzz for your package than for your performances.”
During the opening ceremony, French and English announcers mistakenly introduced South Korean athletes as North Koreans. The error occurred as the South Korean team floated down the River Seine, with the announcers using North Korea's official name. The mistake was compounded when North Korea’s delegation passed by later and used the name correctly. The organizers issued a deep apology for the blunder, highlighting the sensitive division between the two Koreas.
The Olympics, with its myriad bling and bloopers, continue to remain a story of resilience, hope, inspiration, and the undeterred spirit of athleticism. It spotlights heroes from amidst us who have dared to dream, when time stood still and the tunnel looked infinite.
India’s wrestling sensation Vinesh Phogat made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, the following morning, she was disqualified after being found 100 grams overweight during the customary weigh-in, despite being within weight limits for her previous match. As a result, she was suspended and denied her previously won silver medal.

In the bustling city of Vancouver, where breathtaking natural landscapes blend seamlessly with an ever-evolving urban environment, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) stands as a beacon of safety, support, and community engagement. For those contemplating a career in law enforcement, the VPD offers not just a job but a profound opportunity to make a meaningful impact while growing both personally and professionally.
For Special Municipal Constable Ravneet Klair, a journey into law enforcement began unexpectedly, but with a clear passion for helping others. After working as a security guard, Klair discovered a genuine interest in policing through her interactions with the VPD. She shares, "This passion for helping people and love for my community keeps me motivated throughout each shift with the VPD."
For those considering joining, Klair emphasizes the importance of patience, empathy, and people skills, "Take on volunteer opportunities that the department has to offer. With 12 Community Policing Centers across the city, VPD enables a chance to give back to the community and better understand what a law enforcement career entails. Keep working hard and make it happen!"
Constable Baljinder Lally’s early aspiration to become a police officer was
rooted in a desire to serve others, a goal deeply influenced by her cultural values of selfless service. Her daily experiences in policing, which involve interacting with the community, keep her going. She explains, "Police rely on the community's cooperation to share information about crime in their neighborhood; I genuinely enjoy this collaboration. Every day brings something new and different, and that surprise motivates me."
For those considering a career with the VPD, Lally stresses, "A recruit should be able to investigate a call and think outside the box. Critical thinking and quick decision making are important for complex and high-pressure situations.”
In a similar light, Constable Amarveer Dhesi’s journey was deeply influenced by family legacy and community. He reflects, "I value the meaning of community, and I always wanted to contribute a positive impact."
Constable Dhesi's commitment to his role matches his dedication to his athletic pursuits. The VPD has supported his dream of competing in the 2024 Olympics by allowing him the flexibility to train and prepare. Dhesi's advice for prospective recruits is straightforward yet profound, "If you’re looking for a career that offers you something different each day, as well as a department that supports your personal and career development goals, VPD is the place to be."
Constable Shamsher Singh Tung's journey from Punjab, India, to becoming a VPD officer exemplifies dedication and resilience. Inspired by family members in law enforcement, Tung aspired to contribute positively to society rather than simply criticize systemic issues. His approach to each call, whether handling domestic disturbances or community events, reflects a commitment to making a difference. Emphasizing his varied experiences, he notes, "Each situation is different and unique."
Sergeant Gurdeep Beesla’s path to policing is driven by his desire to work in a team-oriented environment and serve his community. A memorable moment in his career was a particularly impactful interaction with a citizen struggling with substance abuse. Moved by Beesla's compassion, this individual not only addressed his issues but now speaks publicly about the positive change in his life, attributing it to Beesla’s approachability and support.
The VPD has played a pivotal role in Beesla's professional development. He notes, "The VPD has provided me with many opportunities, including further education based on my career goals.” For new recruits, Beesla highlights the importance of embodying the department’s core values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. He asserts, "It’s important for new recruits to exemplify these
qualities before applying and throughout their policing career.”
On another angle, Constable Adarsh Nair’s transition from the Indian Armed Forces and immigration services to the VPD highlights the department’s welcoming environment for those with diverse backgrounds. Nair shares, "It is crucial to have a diverse cohort of officers to cater to the blended segments of the population in the Lower Mainland. The department has a great working culture and is truly accommodating. I have ample opportunities for skill development and a brilliant squad with supportive team members.”
His recent experience at the Celebration of Lights, where he successfully reunited lost children with their father, underscores the profound impact that even small actions can make. Nair’s advice for new recruits focuses on gaining life experiences and staying informed, "Attend information sessions, reach out to the recruitment team at VPD, and keep yourselves physically and mentally fit.”
Undoubtedly, the Vancouver Police Department stands as a dynamic and supportive institution for those passionate about law enforcement and community service. If you are a caring and empathetic problem-solver with a desire to make the world a better place with a career beyond the ordinary 9 to 5, VPD may just be that perfect fit. With opportunities for personal and professional development and a diverse and inclusive work environment, the VPD offers a rewarding career path for individuals dedicated to making a difference and welcomes dedicated individuals ready to embark on a meaningful and impactful career.

Over the past few years, many Canadian post-secondary institutions have increased their international student enrolment to offset declining provincial funding. However, this surge has not been without issues. Aside from institutions that have been criticized for exploiting international students, who often come to Canada with dreams of a better future but face unexpected challenges, another issue has come to the limelight.
Recent federal policy changes could lead to the deportation of over 70,000 international student graduates by the end of the year. These graduates, who had hoped to secure permanent residency, now find themselves in a state of uncertainty, burdened by significant debt and shattered aspirations. The narrative around international students in Canada is further complicated by prevalent stereotypes, which can unfairly depict them as contributors to housing shortages and job competition rather than recognizing
their vital role in the country’s educational and economic landscape. We delve into the personal stories of three international students who share their experiences and challenges in this increasingly complex environment.
Why did you decide to move to Canada, and how is reality compared to expectations?
The main reason I decided to move to Canada was to become independent. In India, most people prefer living in a joint family, which often makes us dependent on our parents. We don't fully realize how our parents make our wishes come true. As soon as I came here, I understood the true value of relationships and money. Most importantly, I learned how money is earned. Moreover, it feels great to become independent at such a young age, which is a fantastic kickstart for any youngster like me.

What are some of your biggest challenges as an international student? How have you overcome them?
My biggest challenge as an international student has been balancing work and study. It was especially tough in the beginning, staying away from family and managing time between work and academics. It was hectic initially, but I eventually got used to it. It’s part of life where you learn how to overcome obstacles. Another significant challenge was doing house chores, something I never really did back home. Time management has been a major challenge.
Have you encountered any stereotypes or misconceptions about international students? How have these affected you, and what do you wish people understood better?
Yes, there are many stereotypes about international students, like the belief that we come here only to engage in criminal activities or fights. People often judge the entire community based on the actions of a few after seeing videos or posts on social media, but every coin has two sides. I haven't personally faced such stereotypes, but I know people who have shown hatred toward international students. People should respect that students are surviving away from home, working hard to achieve success without relying on anyone. They should motivate rather than demotivate us by demeaning our presence in a different country. Judgments should not be based on mere assumptions.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of during your time as an international student?
I’m proud of the person I’ve become since coming to Canada. I’ve learned to care for myself and manage my expenses while focusing on my studies. I'm also proud that I found a job in my field here. As a golf player, securing a job at a golf club makes me happy as I stay connected with the sport I love and have invested my entire childhood in.
What advice would you give other international students just starting their journey?
The most important advice I’d give to other international students is to always stay positive and follow the path toward your goals without hesitation. Be patient throughout your journey, and never give up on your dreams. If you work hard and have faith in yourself, nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams. Don’t let the opinions of others mislead or misguide you in any way. Make mistakes, but learn from them.

Why did you decide to move to Canada, and how is reality compared to expectations?
I moved to Canada for better education and growth opportunities. In reality, there are indeed better opportunities in terms of education and employment. However, I faced challenges during my initial semester at university because the education system here differs greatly from that of India. In India, education is more theory-based, while here, it’s more practical, which I think is good. Regarding the job market, there are opportunities, but many people from other countries find it difficult to secure good jobs initially because the job dynamics here are different. Apart from education and the job market, the quality of life and living standards here have met my expectations.
What are some of your biggest challenges as an international student? How have you overcome them?
I didn’t face many challenges myself, as my cousin helped me settle, but I’d like to highlight some challenges that international students face now. Truthfully speaking, the situation now is different compared to when I arrived. Finding a job and dealing with a high cost of living are major issues. Many new students who just moved here are struggling to find jobs. Some students come from weak financial backgrounds, so they need to send money back home to their parents. However, without a job, some students are barely surviving.
Have you encountered any stereotypes or misconceptions about international students? How have these affected you, and what do you wish people understood better?
The most common misconception is that all international students don’t know how to behave or live in society and are just here to buy expensive cars and show off. Judging every international student based on this is not fair. I know many students, and I meet new students every day at the
university who are focused on their studies, work hard day and night, and have many sleepless nights only to fulfill their dreams and make their parents proud. I also want to clarify that not everyone comes here just for work. I’m in my third year and hope to graduate with my bachelor's degree by the end of next year. After that, I want to pursue my CPA.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of during your time as an international student?
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, the government allowed international students to work full-time. I remember working two jobs at the time while also being a full-time student. Despite the challenges, I completed my 2-year diploma in 1.5 years with a good GPA. Managing work and study at that time was not easy; there were days when I even got frustrated and thought I would have a better life back home in India. Another accomplishment I’m proud of is becoming the president of the Student Union at Capilano University. Winning the election in a diverse environment by a large margin and representing my community is something I’m very proud of.
What advice would you give other international students just starting their journey?
Keep your studies a top priority. Stay mentally strong. Challenges will come, and they’re a part of life, but facing them will make you stronger. Support each other and stay united like a family. If you’re going through a problem, share it with other students as they might be facing the same thing. Work hard, but avoid bad influences, such as drugs, just to earn more money. Don’t start taking drugs or drinking just to look cool; nobody really cares what you do. Work on yourself, stay focused on your goals, and develop yourself as a person. Also, manage your finances properly, especially in the first few years.

offers not just academic growth but also personal and professional development opportunities beyond my expectations.
What are some of your biggest challenges as an international student? How have you overcome them?
Adjusting to a new academic environment and overcoming cultural differences were initially challenging. The transition involved dealing with homesickness and understanding the nuances of Canadian culture. What really helped was getting involved with campus life and connecting with fellow students. My role as VP of External Affairs at the Kwantlen Student Association gave me a platform to not only overcome these challenges but also to help others navigate them. Engaging with the community has been key to overcoming these hurdles.
Have you encountered any stereotypes or misconceptions about international students? How have these affected you, and what do you wish people understood better?
Why did you decide to move to Canada, and how is reality compared to expectations?
I moved to Canada to access top-notch education and immerse myself in a diverse cultural landscape. I anticipated a few bumps along the way, but the reality has been even more enriching than I imagined. The sense of community, especially at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, has been incredible. I've found that Canada
Yes, I’ve encountered the stereotype that international students are primarily focused on academics and less engaged in broader student life. This can be frustrating because it overlooks our contributions beyond the classroom. Through my work with the student association, I’ve seen firsthand how international students are eager to get involved, share their perspectives, and make meaningful connections. I wish more people understood that our experiences and insights enrich the campus community.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of during your time as an international student?
Serving as VP of External Affairs at the Kwantlen Student Association has been the highlight of my time here. I’m proud of our initiatives that have positively
impacted both domestic and international students. From advocating for student needs to fostering a more inclusive environment, it’s rewarding to see our efforts making a difference. Helping bridge the gap between different student communities is something I’m particularly proud of.
What advice would you give other international students just starting their journey?
My advice would be to dive in headfirst. Don’t hold back from exploring everything this journey has to offer. Get involved on campus, make connections, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. The community here is incredibly supportive. Remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and the experiences you gain will be invaluable in shaping both your personal and professional life. Embrace the journey with an open mind and heart.
Overall, it's clear that while Canada has long been a destination for international students seeking quality education and a pathway to a better life, recent developments have cast a shadow on these aspirations. The testimonies of students highlight the need for greater transparency and support from both educational institutions and the government. Without addressing these systemic issues, Canada risks losing the trust of the international community and the potential contributions of these students to the nation's future.
The stereotypes that persist around international students only deepen the divide and misunderstanding, making it even more crucial to approach these discussions with empathy and a commitment to equitable solutions. When drawing conclusions about any situation, it's crucial to consider the entire picture rather than focusing on isolated details. As such, when assessing the experiences of international students, acknowledging their diverse backgrounds, challenges, and accomplishments provides a more comprehensive perspective. By considering the full context, we not only enrich our understanding but also foster more inclusive and well-rounded discussions in the public sphere.
The landscape of South Asian music is brighter than ever, with artists breaking barriers and filling arenas worldwide. Our music is massive right now."
By Natasha D'souza
When it comes to pioneering the blend of Punjabi rhythms and Bhangra with R&B vibes, Jagwinder Singh Dhaliwal fondly known as Juggy D stands as a towering figure. The ‘Dance with You’ smash-maker, also one of the original architects of the Urban Desi movement, has had a musical journey in a league of its own. In an exclusive chat with DARPAN, the UK-based Punjabi rockstar, singer, songwriter and entertainer gets candid about the second innings of his career, the evolution of South Asian music, embracing digital age and his vision for the future...all while he continues to add to his electrifying line-up of projects for the year!
Juggy D’s musical odyssey began in Southall, but his roots stretch far beyond.
“Music was in me from a very young age,” he reveals. “My parents took me to India, and I fell in love with our culture, music, and food.” He fondly remembers collecting the latest music tapes and copying the best songs. Influenced by legends like Gurdas Maan, Ranjit Mani, Dilshad Akhtar and Kuldip Manak among others, the global sensation's early exposure to the rich tapestry of Punjabi music set the stage for his future endeavours.
As Punjabi music burgeons globally, we cannot miss to credit Juggy to introduce the world to it. “It makes me very proud to be part of history,” he says, reflecting on his role in popularizing regional South Asian music and establishing the Urban Desi genre when social media was far from reality. With commercialization often stirring a blend of excitement and anxiety among artists, Juggy D remains
unshaken. “I’m proud to have created a movement that made Punjabis and Punjabi music popular and crossover into the mainstream,” he asserts.
Juggy D’s recently released club crusher "Meri Ban Ja" with the original squad Rishi Rich and Jay Sean brought a wave of nostalgia, echoing the party sounds of 2000s. With over 2.5M views on YouTube, he explains, "It was amazing working on the track although I think it could’ve done a lot better than it did. However, times change, audiences change and people change too. Even though that song wasn’t under the 'The Rishi Rich Project' banner, that was probably the last time you will hear the three of us on a record together."
Looking forward, Juggy D enthusiastically exclaims, “I would love to collaborate with
some mainstream artists again, like I did back in the day, as well as with music communities from India. I think, for everyone, you keep your music fresh by working with new producers and artists and experimenting with new sounds. The key to staying relevant yet authentic is that you have to move with time but also keep an element of what is true to you."
“The landscape of South Asian music is brighter than ever, with artists breaking barriers and filling arenas worldwide. Our music is massive right now,” he observes. “With digital numbers at an all-time high, the genre’s future looks promising,” he quips.
Juggy D’s music is known for its joyous and upbeat vibe. “My music has always been happy music,” he says, emphasizing its lighthearted nature designed to make listeners dance and smile. This ethos reflects not just his musical style but also his approach to tackling the pressures and fierce competition of the industry. “I am my own competition. I have my own market and loyal fans. I have been around for over two decades and am happy,” he asserts, underscoring his focus on personal growth rather than external rivalries.
After recently reshaping his future and triumphing over alcohol addiction, Juggy D is brimming with renewed zest for his upcoming projects and remains a source of inspiration for those facing similar struggles. “I’m currently working on my next single, which will be released very soon on my YouTube channel Juggy D TV,” he reveals. Additionally, he’s in talks with his “bro” Rishi about a potential EP, promising yet another thrilling chapter in his illustrious career.
As Juggy D continues to innovate and inspire, he remains a pivotal force in shaping the future of cultural music, adding to the smorgasbord of art that bridges traditions with modernity, connecting generations and people across borders. In a world of fleeting trends, the hitmaker’s impact endures, proving that greatness is both timeless and transformative.

The fast-paced world of fashion is bowing out gracefully to the “slow clothing” movement, transforming how clothes are made, worn, and perceived. Sustainable fashion, once an “out of the box” concept, is now at the forefront, pushing boundaries and redefining style globally. It isn’t just a buzzword anymore but an amalgamation of innovation, tradition, and a future where fashion is both stylish, conscious, and responsible.
Vancouver-based sustainable fashion advocate and co-founder of Fibr.Bio, Jaiya Varshney emphasizes the growing consumer awareness driving this shift, stating, “Sustainable fashion is gradually taking center stage as consumers become increasingly aware of the impact their purchasing decisions have on the planet and people. As people learn more about the devastating environmental consequences of conventional fashion, their demand for more responsible alternatives grows.”
At the helm of this revolution is the development of textiles that minimize environmental impact while offering exciting new possibilities for design, sometimes making it hard to imagine that fashion can evolve so dramatically. Varshney highlights some trends that will dominate the industry in the coming years: “Innovative and sustainable materials like those we're developing at Fibr.Bio are reshaping the industry.”
Among these innovative materials, several fabrics stand out for their eco-friendly properties:
Regenerative Fabrics: These fabrics, such as regenerative cotton and wool, restore the environment through practices that improve soil health and biodiversity. These materials are not just sustainable; they actively contribute to the ecosystem, making fashion a force for good.
Orange Fiber and Piñatex: In the quest for alternatives to traditional textiles, plant-based and residual materials like Orange Fiber (from citrus waste) and Piñatex (from pineapple leaves) are gaining momentum. These groundbreaking

fabrics bring unique textures and stories to each garment, ensuring longer durability and softness.
Hemp Fabric: One of the cleanest of the lot, hemp is gaining popularity due to its low water usage and rapid growth. It is flexible, strong, and biodegradable, making it a preferred choice for t-shirts and everyday clothing because it is wear and tear proof.
Tencel (Lyocell): Produced from sustainably sourced wood pulp, Tencel is popular for its sweat-wicking and drytech properties. Its closed-loop production process recycles water and solvents, making it a highly sustainable option.
Lab-grown Leather: Traditional leather production has often been criticized for its environmental impact, but lab-grown leather offers a luxurious alternative without the environmental penalty. Manufactured from animal cells or plant-based materials, this cruelty-free fabric rebrands itself as a sustainable luxury.
Varshney adds, “Companies like Pangaia are pioneering the use of eco-friendly fabrics that push the boundaries of what's possible. The rental fashion market, led by platforms like Rent the Runway, is gaining popularity as it offers consumers high-quality fashion without the environ-
mental impact of fast fashion. Upcycling programs, such as those by Frankie Collective, offer unique, reimagined pieces while reducing waste. Meanwhile, the second-hand and vintage markets are booming, with platforms like The RealReal and Vestiaire Collective providing curated collections of pre-loved fashion.”
Sustainable fashion goes beyond what we wear and includes several other social, environmental, and economic conditions, practices, and processes. New-age techniques advocate low to no waste and are targeted toward conserving resources while adding a narrative of craftsmanship and care to each piece.
In zero-waste design, the beauty lies in using the fabric to its last weave, preventing wastage. This approach minimizes environmental impact and fosters creativity, exclusivity, and artistry. Upcycling is the art of infusing life into old, discarded material and transforming it into a renewed piece. Brands are rolling out trade-in offers for old pairs of jeans, remodeling them into newer collections. Another future-forward technique working its way up the rung is 3D knitting, which is more efficient than traditional cut-and-sew methods. It entails computer-controlled machines knitting garments in three dimensions, reducing waste and allowing for precise, customized fits. 3D-knitted garments are made in a single piece, facilitating localized production, cutting down production and transportation inefficiencies, and ensuring minimal yarn wastage.
While sustainable fashion may sometimes seem like a high-end concept, it is an easy and operative reality for anyone willing to make conscious choices.
The green fashion mogul offers consumers practical advice:
Shop With Intention: Focus on buying versatile, timeless pieces that you love and will wear for years.
Buy Less, Choose Quality: Prioritize fewer, high-quality items to reduce waste and reliance on fast fashion.
Opt For Second-Hand: Embrace second-hand and vintage clothing to reduce environmental impact and find unique pieces.
Choose Natural Materials: Select fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, or Tencel over petroleum-based options.
Care For Your Clothes: Extend the life of your garments by washing them properly, repairing them, and maintaining them well.
The sustainable movement is not just a fleeting trend but a barometer of the new face of fashion worldwide. From the charming alleys of Paris to Toronto's streets, the demand for ethical, eco-friendly fashion is driving brands to rethink their practices. By fusing ancient craft with modern technologies and past wisdom with scientific foresight, the language of fashion will have a greater meaning—of self-love, love for the environment, and love for one another, all rooted in impact and purpose.

Autumn is a time of reflection, with the crisp air engulfing tones of change and thoughtful introspection. As the end of this year approaches, it is the perfect time to fall into savings and prepare for the financial demands of the holiday season and the upcoming new year. With a bit of foresight and strategic planning, you can ease the financial strain that often accompanies the end of the year.
An effective strategy is to start with a budget. Evaluate your current financial situation and anticipate upcoming expenses, such as holiday gifts, travel, and any year-end obligations like taxes or insurance premiums. Creating a detailed budget now allows you to allocate funds for these expenses gradually, reducing the burden when they arise. Also, consider setting up a separate savings account specifically for holiday spending to avoid dipping into your regular savings.
Adopting smart financial habits can also maximize savings during this time. Taimoor Tariq, Financial Planner at TWC Financial, shares, “First, take advantage of seasonal sales to stock up on necessities. Many retailers offer significant
discounts during fall sales events, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Review your retirement contributions and make any necessary adjustments before the year ends, capitalizing on tax-advantaged accounts like RRSP, TFSA, and FHSA.” That said, a common financial mistake people make during the fall is overspending, particularly with the holiday season in sight. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of holiday shopping, but it's important to stay within your budget. One way to avoid this pitfall is by making a shopping list and sticking to it, which helps prevent unnecessary purchases.
There are also some financial myths that can mislead people during this season. One such myth is that the best deals are always during holiday sales events. In reality, many retailers increase prices just before the holidays to offer discounts that are not actually as significant as they seem. Tariq points out that retailers often use limited-time offers to create a sense of urgency, leading to impulse purchases. Shopping for deals throughout the fall is often more effective, taking advantage of clearance sales on summer items or back-to-school promotions.
Taimoor Tariq, Financial Planner at TWC Financial "
Regardless of your financial standing, budgeting is a crucial tool for managing money and achieving long-term financial goals,”
Finally, remember that fall is a great time to review and adjust your plan for the upcoming year, no matter how far along you may be on your financial journey. “Another myth is that budgeting is only necessary for those who are financially struggling. Regardless of your financial standing, budgeting is a crucial tool for managing money and achieving long-term financial goals,” shares Tariq.
In terms of longer-term financial investments and savings options, the government of Canada suggests considering the below broader types:
• bonds, such as Canada Savings Bonds
• mutual funds
• index-linked deposits
• stocks
• long-term deposits
• long-term guaranteed investment certificates (GICs)
• Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
• Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs)
• Registered Disability Savings Plans (RDSPs)
• Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs)
Whether you're planning to save more, invest, or pay off debt, starting now gives you a head start, ensuring that you enter the new year financially prepared and confident. By implementing these strategies and being mindful of your spending, you can make the most of this season and set yourself up for financial success in the months ahead. Happy savings!

You have to outwork the competition and know there’s always more to be done. Understand that when you get to the finish line, there’s always another finish line ahead.”

In the realm of sports and athletics, we always celebrate and recognize sportspersons and in many cases try to mimic their game strategies and personal routines. But we seldom acknowledge their trainers with the same fervor and often do not give them enough credit. Here’s where only a few names resonate with the same intensity as Tim Singh Grover. His life story, beginning in England, in a Sikh household, to becoming a globally renowned fitness and mental trainer, is yet another testimony to the unabated enthusiasm of the colorful community we call our own. His dedication to pushing boundaries and doing everything with a difference is inspiring yet deeply reflective of the values and struggles of the South Asian immigrant group worldwide.
Tim Singh Grover, born to Indian parents in Wolverhampton, England, moved to the US when he was 4. He is grateful his parents raised him with values that gave him an edge in life and shaped his destiny, “I wouldn’t be here, have the success I have, the life I live, if it wasn’t for my parents. Everything they taught me, the discipline they showed me, has been instrumental.” His upbringing was a blend of discipline, cultural heritage, and practical realities of immigrant life. His father, Surjit Singh Grover, a former doctor, had to accept a job as a degreaser— dismantling cadavers--in the US, a role far different than what he was trained to do. His mother, Rattan Grover, a nurse practitioner at a major hospital, worked nights and made sure the kids were brought up in a humble, hard-working home setup. This laid the foundation for Tim Singh Grover’s future success, teaching him the value of perseverance and commitment.
Tim Singh Grover was initially unsure of what he wanted to be but was always interested in sports, playing multiple games as a teenager. At the University of Illinois in Chicago, kinesiology grabbed his attention—the study of movement, exercise, and muscle function. This new major perfectly blended his love for sports and the science behind how the human body works, a path that would define his career.
As Tim Singh Grover completed his college degree, he decided he wanted to train professional athletes. But back in the 1980s the only athletes with personal coaches were Olympians or boxers. His parents were not entirely convinced, “For my parents, success meant having a secure job with health benefits,
a retirement plan, paid vacations and other perks. I asked them to believe in me, the same way they believed in themselves when they made the move from India to the US. I said, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll join medical school.”
His career choices were rather unconventional for his Indian immigrant parents, but they believed in him and his abilities. After graduating, he took up a job at a local health club, earning $3.37 an hour—a stint that gave him practical experience and knowledge that would help him immensely in the coming months.
Soon after, he saw an article in the newspaper talking about how Michael Jordan was exhausted by the physicality of the Detroit Pistons when they played each other, “I thought, okay, I’m going to write 14 letters, one to each member of the team and tell them what I’m capable of. I assumed Michael wouldn’t want to hire a newcomer, so I excluded him from the list.” But as fate would have it, a couple of weeks later, one of these letters reached the ‘Air,’ changing the course of Tim Singh Grover’s life and career.
Sporting legends have the shortest memories, whether they win or lose. They don’t dwell on losses and enjoy the winning moment but quickly move on to what’s next.”
Tim Singh Grover soon met Michael Jordan and explained his unconventional training philosophy to the NBA player. Jordan, intrigued by his proposal, gave him a 30-day trial period that eventually turned into a 15-year partnership. “That’s the thing with legends- they are the best, but they are always looking to get better. I paid attention to details that nobody else did, and that set me apart from the others. I would work out his toes, fingers, and ankles—areas that often get injured because of how he played,” Grover says, explaining his training philosophy, which is rooted in a deep understanding of biomechanics and a strong commitment to pushing the best athletes to their highest potential.
“I watched all his games in person and would also record them on my Betamax. Come home, rewatch it, and count every step of each leg, every jump, every movement. I was the original Fitbit of the 90s,” recalls Grover, from whom Jordan demanded total exclusivity while he actively played the sport.
For Tim Singh Grover and the athletes he trained, mental preparation and physical workouts went hand-in-hand. “For the greatest, in sports or business, mental preparation comes first, and physical training trails second. Physical training should challenge you mentally. For me, both components are extremely important and must be matched together,” he says. He talks about mental dominance in his New York Times bestselling books ‘Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable’ and ‘Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness,’ “I was fortunate enough to spend time with some of the greatest athletes - over 15 years with Michael Jordan, over 13 years with Dwayne Wade and nine years with Kobe Bryant. I saw how they handled their victories, personal lives, and setbacks, which helped me understand what it takes to be a winner and develop these philosophies for my books. It’s all about mental toughness, understanding the purpose of a physical grind.” In the book ‘Winning,’ Michael Jordan says this about him: "Tim Grover was by my side for fifteen years, and knows more than anyone about building winners.”
Tim Singh Grover founded ATTACK Athletics in 1989 and now consults with businesses, entrepreneurs, leadership groups, elite athletes, and achievers in any area to be the best version of themselves. “I look at every individual, every businessperson as an athlete. Some may not physically endure what a professional athlete does, but mentally, it is all the same. You have to be ready for whatever is thrown at you. Understanding the Relentless mentality is about how individuals like Michael or Kobe handled adversity,” he says, proving that mental dominance is equally important. Kobe Bryant, in an interview, once said, “Tim Grover is the master of mental toughness, discovering what you’re capable of achieving, getting results you never imagined, reaching the highest level of success—and then going even higher.”
Born and raised in an Indian home with parents in medicine, Tim Singh Grover very quickly learned to pay attention to the tiniest de-

tails, “They paid attention to details that nobody thought was important. Later in life, I could understand why they did that and incorporated it into my career, too. Everybody looked at the bigger muscles, but I paid attention to every movement, which set me apart from all the other trainers.”
Discrimination against turban-wearing Sikhs was rampant in the 1970s and 1980s. Tim Singh Grover not only witnessed first-hand the challenges and discrimination his parents faced but also their courage during those times. Their resilience and determination have always been the source of inspiration for him, shaping his perspective and work ethic.
Work on your fundamentals, not content for your social media handles, advises Tim Singh Grover. He says, “Everybody looks at a Stephen Curry or a Virat Kohli and talks about their crazy shot or the perfect wicket, but nobody sees the 4countless hours they put in behind closed doors, the fundamentals they continue to work on, to be the best.” With all the noise there is on social media, he advises young sports players to believe in themselves and listen to their conscience, “Don’t care about how many likes a certain video got you on Instagram, if it worked for your fundamentals, continue to work on it till you become the best. Don’t be inundated by everybody else’s opinions and thoughts, have the ability to listen to yourself and trust yourself.”
“As a parent, you should not be training your child unless you have actually played that sport at a higher level,” says Tim Singh Grover. It is important that parents exhibit the advice they give their children in their own lives. Parents can’t force their kids to work harder and give it their all, unless they themselves are not doing the same thing in life, at work and everything they do. “Kids don’t listen to

People say “I’m grinding every single day,’ but are you grinding with a purpose? If you’re just grinding, all you are doing is creating dust.”
what you say, but they are watching what you do always.” Parents should also make sure their kids play multiple sports; they can focus on one, but must be engaged in different games, “When a kid is seven or eight and are focusing on one sport, they are doing the same movement pattern over and over again. It is important for the body to move in different patterns so that they don’t injure themselves in the process.” Additionally, he urges parents to encourage and support children in sports they like and really want to participate in, rather than imposing their own dreams onto them.
Tim Singh Grover is somebody who does not believe in shortcuts, “It is easier to obtain information now than ever, but you still have to put in the work to obtain greatness.” He believes, in the process of working toward something, it is impossible to love everything you do but you have to create the end result that everybody applauds. He wants to leave behind a legacy that forces people to be their best self at all times, even if they feel bogged down by certain circumstances, “You are not going to win at everything. It took Michael seven years before his first championship, seven years between Kobe’s third and fourth championship. It takes time, but you have to remain focused because every action you take brings you closer or further away from your dream.”
Tim Singh Grover always gives his best at what he does – earlier it was physical training and now with corporate training. He makes sure to cater to specific audiences with what would help them to become better and mentally challenge himself to keep his presentations fresh and relevant. He is a self-starter who does not look outside for validation, “Everything is internal for me. I don’t look for motivation elsewhere. When I see my clients and business organizations, the impact I’ve had on them, it validates everything I’ve been doing.”
“We
want to make sure we help surrounding communities with all their oral healthcare needs, all the way from dental education to surgical procedures.”
With Surrey being one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada, the need for medical facilities has also increased significantly. Growing diverse communities need multiple medical offices, and that’s where specialists like Dr. Jeevan Gill step in to provide advanced healthcare with a sense of dedication and strongwilled entrepreneurship.
A true local, Dr. Jeevan Gill was born and raised in Surrey but decided to pursue dentistry in what some would think an unconventional pattern. After completing his first year of undergraduate studies in Canada, Dr. Gill moved to India to pursue a Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery. This experience was not just academically rewarding but also gave him a unique perspective of dental practices around the world and across different cultures. Upon returning to Canada, he successfully demonstrated his expertise by passing rigorous equivalency exams, eventually earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Dalhousie University in 2006.
For a decade after, Dr. Gill worked as an associate dentist in Burnaby, an experience that led him to fulfill his dream and take the next big step—entrepreneurship. His first clinic, Radiant Dental Panorama, opened its doors to the community in 2016 and soon became known for its extensive and advanced approach to dentistry. “We want to make sure we help surrounding communities with all their oral healthcare needs, all the way from dental education to surgical procedures,” says Dr. Gill.
For him, opening his first office was just the beginning. Now, with his second office coming up in Clayton, he aims to expand even further to serve more communities with modern dental medicine. Radiant Dental Clayton provides top-notch family dentistry services alongside modern surgical procedures like full-mouth rehabilitation, wisdom teeth removal, Botox treatments, and dental implants. Notably, Dr. Gill teaches advanced courses in dental implants at multiple institutions across British Columbia and Alberta. Both Radiant Dental clinics boast the latest technology, including cone beam scan machines, digital scanners, and printers, helping them provide precise and effective treatments always.
Dr. Gill’s approach to modern dentistry is deeply rooted in patient education, ensuring that every patient who enters through Radiant Dental
understands their treatment options and the importance of oral hygiene. “I can positively say that our success comes from making sure that our patients feel heard and they make informed decisions through the well-rounded education we provide,” he says with pride.
Dr. Jeevan Gill’s South Asian background plays an important role in his outlook towards dentistry. With his time in India and practice in Surrey, he understands well the unique challenges and hesitations some South Asians may have regarding modern dentistry. He uses this insight to connect to his patients on a deeper level, nurturing a healthy and comfortable environment for everyone, “With the benefit of starting out in India and then being a part of the community here, I think I’ve been able to be a strong bridge between people and their dental treatments.”
Not only through his dental practice, but Dr. Gill also passionately advocates for community service through participation in various organizations. He is actively involved with organizations like KidsPlay, the Surrey Hospitals Foundation, and local food banks. Through his strong commitment to charity, he strives to give back to the community that has constantly supported him.
For South Asians who see their future in dentistry, he advises, “If you’re motivated to pursue it, put in the
hard work and go for it. If I can make it through and be successful, you can too.” Both Radiant Dental clinics offer volunteer programs for individuals who are interested in taking up dentistry in the future.
With the opening of Radiant Dental Clayton, Dr. Gill is excited about the future. Sensing a growing need for advanced oral health care in the community, the decision to set up his second office in Clayton aims to provide residents with exceptional dental care closer to home.
As his Clayton office is now accessible to patients in the community, they can expect the best dental care from a well-trained, supportive staff that listens to their needs and strives to provide comprehensive solutions to all their oral health care problems.

Education is a gift, and Choice School, an independent institution located in East Richmond, British Columbia, excels at enhancing that gift. Distinct in its focus on gifted and twice-exceptional students, the school was recognized by the BC Ministry of Education in 2016 for its unique mandate to serve high-potential, high-ability, and gifted students. Established in 1985, what sets Choice School apart is its commitment to personalizing education, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to thrive, both academically and emotionally.
Sukhbir Bolina, Principal of Choice School, shares that the school helps every child realize their full potential by customizing instruction to the individual, “It is widely recognized that conventional one-size-fits-all teaching strategies frequently do not address the distinct learning requirements and interests of each student. Personalized learning involves adapting teaching methods to align with specific needs, interests, and learning preferences of each student.”
Instead of employing a uniform approach, personalized learning empowers educators to modify lessons, assignments, and resources to leverage students' unique strengths while also fostering their development in areas that require improvement. While Choice School specializes in the unique needs of gifted children, the school’s small, personalized classes and dedicated teaching staff provide an excellent all-around education suitable for many children. Choice School students thrive in a happy, supportive community.
The process of identifying gifted and twice-exceptional students at Choice School is comprehensive. According to Bolina, there are several ways to define gifted students. Listed below are some attributes that may describe your child:
• curious
• intensely interested in something
• quick learner and easily able to see relationships in ideas, objects, or facts
• excellent problem solver
• very imaginative
• very sensitive, emotionally and even physically
• well-developed sense of humor
• asks “what if” questions
• fond of learning new things
• interested in intellectual activity and displays intellectual playfulness
Admissions to Choice School is based on the following criteria:
• suitable evidence of academic ability
• school reports from previous and current academic years
• a successful day visit to the school
Once admitted, each student at Choice School is provided with an Individual Education Plan (IEP); this ‘living’ document helps to guide assessment, planning, collaborative communication, and teaching. Clear targets and goals are identified that focus on the social and emotional development of the child, as well as academic progress. Choice School believes that students deserve individualized care. In addition to small class sizes, each class has an educational assistant for support. Students also have the services of an occupational therapist, behavioral consultant, and psychologist at hand for additional support.
A key challenge that gifted students face in traditional educational settings is the lack of appropriate challenges and support. This situation arises mainly because educators may lack the knowledge or resources to effectively support these exceptional learners. Despite their superior intelligence, these students often struggle to thrive because the curriculum does not engage them, or they face social and emotional challenges that are not adequately addressed.
This is particularly true for twice-exceptional students with both a gifted designation and an additional learning need that requires special education support. Bolina highlights, “At Choice School, we have the resources and expertise to identify the needs of gifted students. Our trained staff come with a growth mindset and allow flexibility in their teaching styles to accommodate." Furthermore, regular professional development ensures that teachers continually improve their ability to support these students. Choice School's curriculum focuses on expanding core competencies through inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-based learning.
Beyond academic excellence, Choice School emphasizes social-emotional learning (SEL), which significantly improves academic performance by providing students with essential emotional intelligence and self-regulation abilities. This focus fosters greater engagement, motivation, and enhanced
learning results. Establishing a nurturing classroom environment through positive relationships and effective pedagogical approaches supports SEL, thereby aiding in students' comprehensive development and well-being. Choice School equips students for future achievements by cultivating their social and emotional competencies in conjunction with their academic learning.
The advantages of small class sizes at Choice School are also paramount. Undoubtedly, the debate regarding the significance of class size has persisted for many years, to which Bolina responds, “Although some individuals continue to contend that class size does not significantly impact educational quality, research indicates otherwise. It is essential to comprehend the relationship between class size, student performance, and teacher retention, as this understanding is vital for advancing our educational system.” At Choice School, small classes of no more than twelve students ensure that children get ample individual attention. As such, Choice School's curriculum goes beyond the standard BC Ministry of Education requirements, drawing on best practices to provide appropriate learning experiences for gifted students. Programs like the Choice Challenge Program and Passion Projects offer exceptional opportunities for students. Ultimately, success speaks for itself; Choice School students flourish not only with a strong academic foundation but also with the emotional and social skills needed to succeed in a bright future.

Dr. Geetanjali Chopra, the heart and soul behind Wishes and Blessings NGO, embodies compassion and dedication to social change. Transitioning from a prestigious role at the Centre for Policy Research to a life devoted to the welfare of underprivileged, destitute, and marginalized communities, her journey is one of deep empathy, transformative impact, and unyielding commitment. A woman of many hats, a golden heart, and dozens of accolades to her name, Dr. Chopra continues to weave a tapestry of hope and change, building an equal society for all.
Dr. Chopra’s profound flair for philanthropy ties back to her upbringing, where community welfare was the norm. A particularly moving incident during a Holi celebration charted her future in this space. Amidst the festival's exuberance, she found herself with visually impaired children, their joy and enthusiasm untainted by their inability to see the colors that others took for granted. “Listening to their heartfelt wishes and seeing their happiness made me realize how even the smallest gestures can have a monumental impact on someone’s life. It was a powerful reminder of how much difference we can make through simple acts of

kindness and compassion,” she shares. This epiphany, born from witnessing the purest expressions of happiness, ignited a passionate resolve within her. In 2014, she founded the Wishes and Blessings NGO, driven by a deep desire to spread smiles and foster hope among the marginalized and underserved. The foundation’s mission is to bridge the gap between donors and beneficiaries, creating
a network of kindness that transforms lives.
With a focus on education, health, skill development, and elder care, the organization strives to positively impact thousands, offering hope, dignity, and opportunities to those in dire need. It already has more than 20 centers across Delhi-NCR, a presence in 7 states across India, occasionally has carried out operations in Nepal, and works on six causes: education, nutrition, care for elders, relief, customizable charity, and the overall cause of happiness.
Among the many lives touched by Wishes and Blessings, Rani’s story stands out as a beacon of hope. A young girl from a family of daily wage earners in Delhi, Rani faced a bleak future living on the streets. Her academic potential was dimmed by her circumstances until Wishes and Blessings intervened. Through their ‘Street to School’ program, Rani received educa-
tion, nourishment, and support. Her newfound passion for football, nurtured by the foundation, earned her a national-level spot as a football player in 2018 and a congregation beaming with pride. “The ripple effect of her newfound confidence and financial independence extends beyond the walls of the skill development center,” Geetanjali joyously expresses.
The visionary catalyst’s approach entails balancing immediate needs with longterm impact, “Each immediate action is carefully planned with the future in mind, ensuring that while we meet urgent demands, we are also laying the groundwork for sustainable, lasting change.”
The Lady Robin Hood’s work in the social sector has emerged as the guiding princi-
ple of her life. “My biggest takeaway from working in social development would be the importance of resilience. Adapting to change requires a willingness to confront discomfort and uncertainty,” she observes. Balancing the emotional demands of her work with her personal life involves setting boundaries and carving out time for self-care. Her commitment to regular rejuvenation through hobbies and spending time with loved ones sustains her motivation and well-being.
Inspiring others, particularly the youth, to engage in philanthropy and social work is a central goal for the social trailblazer. She
believes in making these fields accessible and relatable, “I try to inspire and empower others by sharing stories of impact and demonstrating how small actions can create big differences.”
Looking ahead, Geetanjali’s vision for Wishes and Blessings is one of adaptability and responsiveness. “Our primary focus is to continue refining our current efforts, enhancing their impact and sustainability, and reaching out to more beneficiaries,” she adds. The foundation’s plans to obtain an FCRA registration signify a commitment to expanding its reach and involving international supporters. This evolution will enable more comprehensive support and broaden the foundation’s impact beyond India. Additionally, it intends to roll out volunteering opportunities, bringing NRIs closer to grassroots-level charity initiatives.
“Through my work with Wishes and Blessings, I hope to leave a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and sustainable change. I want to be remembered as someone who not only addressed immediate needs but also worked to uplift communities through innovative solutions and dedicated support. As a changemaker, I aspire to be recognized for my commitment to social justice, ability to inspire and mobilize others, and relentless pursuit of meaningful transformation. I envision a future where the initiatives we have developed become models for others and where the values of empathy, integrity, and collaboration continue to guide the efforts of future generations,” she concludes.
Through every act of kindness and every life she touches, Dr. Geetanjali Chopra paves the way to a world where love and humanity prevail and where people are cherished as our greatest gift and most valuable asset.

With summer coming to an end and kids heading back to school, many families find themselves settling back into their "normal" routines. The days of vacations and having your kids at home during the day—whether with you or a caretaker—are coming to a close. Now that your work schedule, kids' activities, and school hours are more defined, you can build a routine that helps you work toward your fitness goals. Whether you want to lose weight, build muscle, or achieve both, now is the perfect time to establish a consistent fitness routine. Here are some strategies to help you incorporate fitness into your daily schedule as the new school year begins.
Pardeep Bains is a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutritionist. He has trained clients for over 12 years and helped hundreds of clients achieve their fitness goals. His main objective is to help his clients become the best versions of themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Working out while your kids are in school can be incredibly convenient if your situation allows. Knowing that you have at least 6-7 hours of free time opens up the opportunity to fit in a workout at the gym, go for a walk, or engage in any other form of exercise. Utilize these hours to focus on your fitness goals without any distractions.
When your kids participate in extracurricular activities, utilize this time for yourself. You'll often have at least 60 to 90 minutes before their practice is over. Use this time to get your steps in or have a workout session. Maximizing these pockets of time is essential, especially when juggling parenting responsibilities.
Setting time aside for your workouts is crucial for establishing consistency. Knowing when you'll have time and dedicating that time to yourself is vital. Treat your exercise time as a non-negotiable appointment—don’t negotiate with yourself. With a clear understanding of your kids’ schedule and your own, aim to build a routine that is both sustainable and manageable.
However, it’s important not to overdo it at the beginning. Start by committing to working out 2-4 times a week. As you get more comfortable, you can gradu-

As a psychiatrist working in the emergency rooms of two Vancouver hospitals, I witness firsthand the mental health crises that bring people through our doors daily, ranging from suicidal thoughts, psychosis, and drug addictions to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. While I have seen improvement in many of the adults and seniors I treat, my work has deepened my passion for early intervention and mental health literacy, especially for children and the youth. Young brains are far more plastic, and early support for their mental health can prevent crises later in life.
The COVID-19 pandemic was an eye-opener. While I anticipated a surge in mental health crises among children during the lockdown, it wasn’t until schools reopened that the numbers truly spiked. Research confirms this trend: children are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts during the school year than during the summer break. A 2013 American Psychological Association survey found that teens report their stress level during the school year far exceeds what they believe to be healthy (5.8 vs. 3.9 on a 10-point scale) and tops adults’ average reported stress level (5.8 for teens vs. 5.1 for adults).
The sources for this stress are varied—academic pressure, sleep deprivation, bullying—but the consequences can be deadly. One of my colleagues, Dr. Tyler Black, who works at BC Children’s Hospital, found that pediatric suicides increase by 30-43% during the school
year, whereas adult suicide rates peak in the summer, as noted in Scientific American. This data underscores the urgent need to transform our school systems into more supportive environments.
Despite technological advances and the evolving job market (with the rise of social media influencers), our educational systems remain outdated. While mental health dialogue is gaining traction, it is not enough. I believe mental health education should be a mandatory and significant part of the curriculum. In my experience, the skills I learned during training in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), including emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness, have been far more valuable in life than the trigonometry and organic chemistry I was required to learn.
On a personal level, as I navigate parenting two children under three, I believe mental health education should begin even before school. With 90% of brain development occurring before age five, parents are often left without guidance on how to support their children’s mental health during these critical years. After spending 25 years in school, I find it ironic that my most important and challenging job—parenting—came with no training.

As
I see emergency rooms increasingly overwhelmed with patients struggling with mental health problems, I am convinced that we need more advocacy, research, and funding to transform our school systems and provide better resources for parents."
Dr. Priyanka Halli, MD, FRCPC, MPH Psychiatrist and Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC
This realization has fueled my passion for creating mental health literacy tools for infants and toddlers. Noticing my children’s early interest in music, truly their first language, I began composing songs that teach emotions instead of traditional nursery rhymes. I share these on my social media profiles (@dr.hallibear), but I believe this is just one approach. As I see emergency rooms increasingly overwhelmed with patients struggling with mental health problems, I am convinced that we need more advocacy, research, and funding to transform our school systems and provide better resources for parents. I remain optimistic that if we prioritize these initiatives, we can reshape the future of mental health for our children and generations

It’s that time of year again. Summer is winding down, backto-school shopping has begun, and parents are simultaneously rejoicing and struggling as we pack away the wedding season, camping, and vacation gear and pull out backpacks and school supplies. Back-to-school can be stressful for parents due to schedule changes, but returning to routine can also be welcome. Surely, with September comes an opportunity for reflection and action, giving rise to a common concern: How can parents and caregivers, especially those with middle or high school kids, determine the right age for their child to have a phone and ensure it's used safely and healthily?
Most teenagers have smartphones, which can help parents stay in touch but have also led to increased anxiety, depression, body image issues, and cyberbullying, alongside social media’s influence, the spread of misinformation and online hate. Internet and gaming addictions are now recognized medical diagnoses in Europe, highlighting widespread concern among parents, teachers, and caregivers about their impact on youth.
Some parents have taken an interesting and new approach to this issue by investing in a “dumbphone” for their children. Dumbphones are classic cell phones with no internet. The lure of these specific devices is that they allow parents to more easily regulate content while still enabling contact. Phones have become a necessity, but this flashback to a simpler time is signaling a prom-
ising change in how we see the role of technology in our lives and the need to control its use, not have it control us! According to CBC, technology market research firm Counterpoint reported that over 98,600 feature phones were sold in Canada in 2023, marking a 25% increase from 2022. The rise in demand for dumbphones like the Light Phone, Nokia, and Punkt is driven by their lack of distracting features found in smartphones, such as high-resolution screens, social media apps, and internet access. These simpler devices are also more affordable than mainstream options like Apple or Samsung.
From a mental, physical, and social health perspective, this trend is overdue, welcome, and essential. Kids do not need social media or the internet at their fingertips at all times, yet safety, connection, and communication with trusted adults are a necessity. If you’re thinking of switching to a dumbphone for your child, communication is key. A dumbphone is not a punishment but a tool to help give your child more freedom, keep them safe, and build towards

more powerful devices.
While many teenagers may not love the idea at first, it’s important to keep having conversations around your ‘why’ and to find a dynamic that works for your family. If you have noticed that your child is experiencing behavioral disturbances, resistance to reducing screen time, missing out on social activities, and ignoring basic hygiene, it may be time to consider having a conversation as a family about switching to a dumbphone.
While dumbphones still make up less than 1% of Canada's total mobile handset market, the demand is increasing as people search for mobile alternatives with less harmful features. Only time will tell how popular and permanent this solution will be among parents and teens. Who knows? Buying a dumbphone
hef Devan Rajkumar, fondly known as Chef Dev, is a celebrated consultant, author, and the most beloved judge on Food Network Canada’s Fire Masters. Blending Indo-Guyanese flavors with global influences, his newly released cookbook, Mad Love, has sparked a whirlwind of praise.
From his early beginnings, steeped in his family's rich traditions, to his innovative approach to modern cuisine, Chef Dev’s journey is a testament to his commitment to preserving and celebrating the contemporary and forgotten culinary legacy of both East and West Indian cuisines.
From a young age, Chef Dev was captivated by the sights, sounds, and aromas of the kitchen. “Food gave me so much joy, and as I got older, I wanted to nourish people with my own creations. It gives me great fulfillment to cook with love and make someone smile,” he says. His grandmother and mother were his earliest influences, with his grandmother’s preparation of coconut choka and his mother’s adventurous cooking laying the foundation for his culinary passion.
Chef Dev’s career reflects the diverse culture of Toronto, where he grew up. His dishes often blend Indo-Guyanese roots with global cuisines. A standout creation is his Palak Paneer Spanakopita. “It’s a product of me growing up in the multicultural landscape of Toronto,” he explains. “One day, I was thinking, both of these recipes have spinach and cheese in them, why not combine them? The result is an explosion of flavor and textures; I am so proud of it,” he adds.
By Natasha D’souza
Chef Dev has faced challenges, including resistance from his own community. “Innovating within a tradition-rich community can often be met with resistance. I receive feedback from my own people sometimes that innovation is not welcome. However, most of the community also supports what I do, and I am very grateful for it.” he shares.
He has also been open about his mental health struggles. “The journey has not been easy. I have discussed my mental health challenges openly and laid my vulnerabilities bare. It’s important to address these issues and be honest about them, as it can help others facing similar challenges,” he says.
His cookbook, Mad Love: Big Flavors Made to Share, showcases traditional recipes with a modern twist, connecting a new generation to their roots.
Chef Dev acknowledges the challenge of maintaining authenticity, “As time passes, things get lost in translation or ‘dumbed down.’ However, many chefs are shining a light on and highlighting past dishes, techniques, practices, ingredients, and locations.” He is also critical of food fads, saying, “I am not a big fan of the over-the-top desserts and meals which are way too much for one person to eat. We're not supposed to be eating this way,” he scoffs.
Chef Dev aims to inspire the next generation of chefs, especially those from multicultural backgrounds, “Embrace your heritage! Leverage your multicultural background as a unique asset. Your diverse experiences and cultural knowledge can offer fresh perspectives and innovative flavors that set you apart. Understand your role and find your authentic voice.”
Chef Dev is not just preserving tradition—he is redefining it for the future.

The ‘season of change’ is here, and we must shed the old for new. So, rev up to serve some serious glam this fall, because we bet your make-up is about to get a tasty twist!
The beauty world is taking cues from some classic flavors, reconfiguring everything from sage and cinnamon to caramel apples into must-dons. Whether you’re craving something bold or just a sprinkle of spice, these food-inspired trends will have you looking as delicious as your go-to autumn treats. Ready to dig in? Let’s dish out some show-stopping glam!
Inspired by our beloved maple syrup, this trend is about achieving a dewy, caramel-like glow that mimics the look of sun-kissed skin. Perfect for brightening the complexion and giving you the sheen of your dreams, this look adds a natural warmth to any skin tone. It screams allday party-ready!
How to rock this vibe: Use a liquid or cream highlighter with a warm, golden, or bronze undertone. Apply it to the high points of your face—cheekbones, brow bones, and the bridge of the nose. Pair this glow with a soft peach blush and a caramel-toned lip gloss for a naturally radiant finish.
Borrowing from the easy-to-make signature sip, this trend is about caring less and embracing more. Saving you countless trips to the salon, it is perfect for those who prefer unstructured and raw brows. These are full, feathery, and naturally groomed eyebrows that appear soft, youthful, and fun.
How to rock this vibe: Use a medium brown brow pomade to fill in your brows, focusing on creating soft, natural-looking strokes. Brush through well to remove excess, blend the product, and soften the look.
For a chic and icy garnish on fall makeup, a frosted plum and berry palette offers a cool, sophisticated alternative. This look combines the deep, rich tones of plums, reds, crimsons, and browns with a 90s-like shimmering finish, creating a striking and elegant appearance that's perfect for the cooler months. And for people who prefer single shades, there's no harm in losing the glitter… you’ll still be in sync.
How to rock this vibe: Begin by applying a deep eyeshadow base over the eyelid. Diffuse this color smoothly into the crease with a slightly lighter adjoining shade in the color wheel to add depth and dimension. For a frosted effect, add a touch of iridescent silver or pearlescent shimmer to the center of the lids and the inner corners of the eyes. Define the look with a soft grey or charcoal eyeliner, and finish with a few coats of mascara to emphasize your lashes for a feminine, cool-toned look.
Infuse a flush of pumpkin spice to your cheeks by picking any shade from coral to deep reds. Complementing the woody scent that the wind blows along, this exudes the flavorful, toasty tones of the season. It evokes the essence of cozy evenings by the fire, bringing a warm, earthy radiance to your facial contours. Further, it gives you a defined and stunning “windpinched” look that you’d be obsessing over!
How to rock this vibe: Apply a coral or deep red-toned blush to the apples of your cheeks, blending it outward and upward towards your temples for a natural tinge. For a sculpted effect, use a slightly deeper shade along the contour of your cheekbones. Finish with a soft, golden highlighter on the high points of your cheeks to add a subtle glow. You can also quickly dab and blend your lip tint for a more cohesive look.
It’s time to trade in your ultra-matte all-day-stay lipsticks for the sultry gloss. Indulge in the luxurious allure of caramel-glazed lips, bringing a rich and glossy drizzle to your autumn makeup. Inspired by the sumptuous glass-like feel of caramel, this lip look combines deep, warm hues with a high-shine finish. It fuses warm, inviting shades with a luscious gloss that adds depth and dimension. The result is a beautifully glazed finish that not only enriches your lips with a hue but also delivers a radiant, plumped effect. Designed for the modernday bride, Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor's latest collection, "Serenade | The Odyssey of Love," beautifully blends classic elegance with modern flair.
By Shweta Kulkarni
Label Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor, renowned for its high-end couture that seamlessly blends classic elegance with contemporary flair since its inception in 2002, has recently unveiled yet another exquisite collection — Serenade | The Odyssey of Love. A beautiful fusion of old-world charm and modern allure, the collection is specifically designed for the discerning modern-day bride who celebrates femininity without sacrificing her individuality.
The Serenade | The Odyssey of Love collection is a testament to the talented couturier Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor’s dedication to weaving unique perspectives with traditional craftsmanship, creating pieces that are a harmonious blend of past and present.
“The collection meets my vision of simplicity at its best,” Tamanna explains. She elaborates, “I have always envisioned my bride as the 'Classic meets Elegant Contemporary' and designed this collection around my vision of a bride. Weddings today are far from traditional settings. They are taking place in historical buildings, castles, barns, beaches, backyards... So, I was inspired to work around my bride and these destinations. The content from this campaign was so ethereal, so beautiful, and soft… I could only imagine long, flowy veils on beautiful balconies with instrumental music in the background. The name Serenade hence came along.”
Tamanna, who has dressed Bollywood divas like Kiara Advani, Rakul Preet Singh, Genelia D’Souza Deshmukh, Bhumi Pednekar, Sara Ali Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Kajol, and Dia Mirza, has been passionate about fashion since childhood. “My love for clothing and fashion started very early in life. My dad was in the garment industry, so I had easy access to fabrics and embroideries, and I always tried to design clothes. Now, it's been 20 amazing years since I started my label, and I was just born to make clothes,” reflects Tamanna.
Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor’s creations have always epitomized timeless elegance, distinguished by her signature style which combines classic old-world charm with intricate embroideries done on easy cuts, regardless of the ongoing trends. The designer advises, “I would like to tell all brides-to-be and their families that it doesn't matter what is trending, what is in vogue—wear what works best for you and what is true to your personality and you will wear it confidently.”
Crafted with love, the elegant Serenade | The Odyssey Of Love resonates with everything that the label Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor represents. Continuing her exploration of heritage embroideries, Tamanna has masterfully integrated impeccable craftsmanship into this collection. “All embroideries in Serenade are handmade with immense love and thought. We have used the most beautiful zardozi techniques and exceptional craftsmanship in these pieces. And of course, I have subtly incorporated my most loved elements—the mirrors,” Tamanna explains as she delves into the design process and the embroidery techniques employed to curate this collection. She adds, “The USP is, and has always been, the beauty of our embroideries in all our collections, which are so thoughtfully sampled when we plan them. We do everything with love.” The collection is further elevated by the seamless color palette that transitions from dreamy pastels to ivory. “All my favourite pastels and most loved ivories and creams dominate this collection,” informs Tamanna.
From breathtakingly beautiful bridal lehengas adorned with delicate hand embroidery to stunning gharara sets, each piece in this collection is not only a masterpiece but also fuss-free, subtle, elegant, and most of all, designed to meet the aspirations of modern women. “We have mostly classic, timeless silhouettes—silk lehengas, our bestselling styles in ghararas and shararas, ombre sarees, and some contemporary styles for the bride who prefers a more modern look,” Tamanna explains.
One of the most appealing aspects of Label Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor is its price point. Tamanna states, “Price points are again our USP. Value for money is what we have always strived to offer, and we continue to do so. These gorgeous bridal lehengas in this collection are all under INR 400,000.”
Serenade | The Odyssey of Love is available for purchase on the label Tamanna Punjabi Kapoor’s official website — www.tamannapunjabikapoor.com— or through several established online portals The pieces from the collection can also be ordered at various multi-designer stores internationally.

Q: How did you two meet, and what was your first impression of each other?
Sukhmani and I first crossed paths in Mumbai, where the magic of cinema meets real life. She’s an incredibly talented writer and actor, and I was visiting for my brother's reception. Our mutual friend was hosting an event, and as fate would have it, we both ended up there. It felt like a scene from a movie—two strangers slowly walking towards each other, bathed in the soft glow of the spotlight, the world around us fading into the background. When we finally met, it was as if the universe had been waiting for that very moment. We talked, we laughed, and in that instant, we both knew something special had begun. It was a connection that sparked like a firecracker, bright and undeniable.
Q: Can you share the story of your proposal/engagement? Was it a grand surprise or a quiet, intimate moment?
Our proposal was intimate, just the two of us, far from the everyday hustle. We had flown to a charming city in the U.S., and on one perfect evening, we found ourselves on a rooftop with a stunning view and fireworks in the distance. As we enjoyed the quiet magic of that night, I went down on one knee and asked her to spend the rest of our lives together. It was simple, sweet, and perfectly us.
Q: Describe your wedding day for us. Did you have a favorite part of the wedding?
Our wedding day was truly special. We married in Amritsar, India, Sukhmani’s hometown, with the Golden Temple as our backdrop. The day was planned, yet it felt spontaneous and full of joy. The ceremony was filled with love and devotion, making it a heartfelt experience. Afterward, we drove through the city in a vintage Rolls-Royce, with locals turning to look and celebrating with us. Our reception in a beautiful garden, surrounded by family and friends, was a memorable end to a magical day.
Q: Tell us more about your reception.
We were fortunate to have two memorable receptions. Right after our wedding in Amritsar, the first was a beautiful celebration with our loved ones. The second reception in Vancouver was grand and vibrant, with an atmosphere that felt like something from a classic film. Surrounded by family and friends, we danced, laughed, and created lasting memories.
Q: How did you choose your wedding attire for the both of you?
We aimed for our wedding attire to reflect elegance and regality. Sukhmani wore a traditional red by Rimple & Harpreet for the wedding in India, which is deeply meaningful, and I selected an outfit that complemented hers perfectly. She chose a white lehenga by Seema Gujral for our reception in Vancouver. Together, we felt like we were stepping into a timeless love story.
Q: Were any traditions or customs particularly important to include in your wedding?
Traditions are key in a Punjabi Indian wedding. We embraced every aspect of our culture, from the Haldi and Mehndi ceremonies to the Sangeet and the wedding day rituals. Each tradition added joy and warmth to our celebration, making the experience even more special.
Q: Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?
Sukhmani jokes that she might have considered changing the groom—but only for a moment! In all seriousness, we wouldn’t change a thing. The entire experience was perfect in its own way.
Q: How does it feel to be married, and what are you most looking forward to in this new chapter together?
Being married feels great, and we’re excited about this new chapter. We look forward to enjoying life, making memories, and continuing our journey together. Each day is a new adventure, and we’re ready to embrace it.
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to couples planning their wedding, what would it be?
Our advice is to make your wedding day about you. Enjoy every moment, and don’t stress about others’ expectations. We had a wonderful time with our closest loved ones, honoring our traditions while keeping it intimate. It’s your special day— cherish it and make it yours.

The latest Honda Accord debuted last year, and with it comes a fresh hybrid variant tuned to provide a more spirited driving experience.
"Honda's commitment to building world-class sedans continues with the all-new, 11th-generation Accord Hybrid, which is an integral piece of our North American electrification strategy," says Steve Hui, Assistant Vice President, Honda Financial Services, in a media release. "The Accord's reputation is already solidified, but this new Accord is our best ever maintaining its class-leading attributes of sophisticated styling reliability, efficiency, performance, and connectivity."
DARPAN tested the mid-range Sport grade in the stunning Radiant Red
Metallic paint color (+ $300), which looks the part. It features contrasting black side mirrors, a trunk spoiler, front/rear lower bumper lips and side skirts, and 19-inch alloy wheels. The vehicle also has a 10-millimeter wider rear track, broadening the stance and increasing stability on the road. The car appears significantly longer than the outgoing version—70 millimeters, to be precise—with a longer hood and fastback-style sloping roofline.
If you’ve seen or sat in a recent Honda Civic, the interior of the Accord won’t be too much of a surprise. The signature metal mesh trim spans the entire dash length and conceals the air vents. Thankfully, designers have kept an actual gear knob in place rather than installing transmission select buttons or a rotary controller. The brand says

The popular mid-size luxury SUV finally comes in plug-in form, yielding a zero-emissions range of approximately 77 kilometers while offering all the same features and styling that people enjoy from the recently refreshed platform. great, accented by the metallic hits on the front bumper, around the window frames, on the available aluminum running boards (+ $845) and across the tailgate.
As part of the facelift, the headlamps boast revised LED daytime running lights, the side air intake strakes are housed in a painted bezel, and the inner taillight reflectors have a slightly different design.
Mercedes-Benz says the Maybach GLS and S-Class inspire the cabin with additions like the chromed air vents and ambient lighting color palettes, the latter of which is welcomingly reserved compared to the nightclub aesthetic of some of its siblings. The new steering wheel incorporates touch-sensitive horizontal spokes to control the dual
12.3-inch display screens, and the column incorporates a hidden heated function switchsomething sorely missing on EQ vehicles. The standard anthracite open-pore oak wood dash trim is absolutely beautiful.
The second generation of Mercedes-Benz User Experience Software powers the infotainment system and enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for the first time. The 13-speaker Burmester stereo also receives a few tweaks, including the ability to create a personal sound profile and stream music.
A transparent engine hood is also be ing introduced. Selecting this mode utilizes the several cameras installed around the crossover and gives a virtual view of what the terrain looks like underneath the front section, which is useful for navigating obstacles and steep inclines.
Propelling the SUV is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine, mated to a nine-speed automatic trans mission and an electric motor, which together make a net 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Under regular operation, electric-only output is prioritized in lower-speed city driv ing and the ride is whisper quiet. Even when the I.C.E. kicks in, the sound isn’t too harsh, like on many PHEVs.
Unusual for the segment, the 23.3-kilowatt-hour battery supports up to 60-kilowatt DC fast charging alongside 11-kilowatt Level 2, making the model a great choice for urban commuting and longer road trips.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e is sold in three grades: Premium (base), Exclu sive and Pinnacle. DARPAN tested the latter with add-ons like the aforementioned AMG Line Exterior and aluminum running boards, 21-inch alloys ($1,430), Macchiato Beige Interior ($2,105), and Exclusive Trim (heated and ventilated front seating, heated front armrests, and upper door panels, head-up display + navigation augmented reality projection, $2,350). section to accommodate up to eight passengers and additional cargo. Though not awkward looking, the bigger caboose visually gives the 130 quite a different profile compared to the short 90.
Exclusive to the off-roader is a gorgeous coat of maroon-esque Sedona Red paint, complemented by hits of Ceres Silver Satin on the grille trim, hood louvres, protective bumper cladding, and fenders as well as the 20-inch Bright Silver Luna alloy wheels. A panoramic sunroof is standard, and the second sunroof above the third row is a nice touch. Inside, the cabin is configured in a two-plusthree-plus-three layout. However, the 2024 model introduces a second-row Captain Chairs Pack, replacing the bench. The heated and cooled seats incorporate armrests, can recline and tilt, and are available with airline-style winged headrests. Choosing this option also opens up the interior so rearmost passengers have easier access, allows the middle occupant to stretch his or her legs, and mitigates the blind spot the center headrest normally causes.
Thanks to the extra length, the cargo area still has 388 liters of storage space, even with all the seats upright. When the back two rows are stowed, the number balloons to 1,876 liters. If carrying large and/or heavier items, buttons found inside the tailgate will lower the ride height to aid loading.
The press loaner I drove had the P400 motor equipped—a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and possessing mild hybrid technology. The engine is assisted by an electric motor and a supplementary 48-volt battery that is charged via regenerative braking. The energy is then used to boost acceleration and improve fuel economy. Output is rated at 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, which felt sufficient to propel the 5,500-plus-pound all-wheel drive Defender. Maximum towing capacity is 8,200 pounds.
Standard Electric Air Suspension with Adaptive Dynamics keeps the ride comfortable even over the bumpiest surfaces. It can raise an extra 2.8 inches at the front and 2.9 inches at the rear above the 11.4-inch ground clearance to clear obstacles and permit greater wading depth (maximum 35.4 inches).
The 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 P400 is sold in the following grades: S, X-Dy namic SE, X, V8, and Outbound.
The fact that the F-PACE is the only product to survive in the modern Jaguar lineup moving forward, as the brand prepares for a portfolio-wide electrification makeover, is a testament to how good of an SUV it still is. Essentially unchanged since the 2021 refresh, it remains one of the better performance-oriented offerings in the segment today.
“The new F-PACE is dynamic and assertive with an elegant stance on the road—it represents a significant development of Jaguar design language,” says Julian Thomson, Jaguar Design Director, in a media release back when the facelifted crossover was first revealed.

ensure both driver and passengers feel a real sense of occasion whenever they get in the vehicle.”
For 2024, the previously optional Black Exterior Pack is now standard equipment, bringing a Gloss Black finish to the grille and surround, side window trim, door mirror caps, rear badges, and 21-inch alloy wheels—a nice match to the Carpathian Grey paint (+ $1,700) on our press loaner.

grille, reshaped air intakes, and updated mesh design.
Expanded standard equipment continues in the interior: the leather steering wheel is heated, there are additional USB inputs, and the headliner is a classy Ebony color complementing the dark exterior theme. The large 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment-powered curved glass touchscreen works decently, but I prefer the former physical buttons over the sometimes unresponsive virtual climate controls below.
The bolstered sporty bucket seats boast a massaging function and look fantastic, like the rest of the cabin, swathed in Ebony perforated Windsor leather (+ $700). Active Road Noise Cancellation uses opposite sound waves from the 14-speaker Meridian stereo to efficiently counteract unwanted external sounds.
The P400 R-Dynamic grade we tested packs the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder mild-hybrid mill, making 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Plenty quick, with a 0 to 100 km/h speed of 5.4 seconds, the eightspeed automatic gearbox is smooth and the exhaust produces a nice rumble under heavy acceleration. The double-wishbone front/ multi-link rear suspension setup means the vehicle can hold its own through any twisty bits, especially since the all-wheel drive system is rear-axle biased.
Having done a fair share of inclement weather driving during my week-long loan, the customizable JaguarDrive Control came in handy. Comfort and Eco modes are great for daily fair conditions motoring or switch to Rain-Ice Snow for slipperier surfaces where throttle mapping, shift points, and other settings are automatically adjusted to suit the environment. Dynamic is reserved for extracting the most fun out of the F-PACE.
The 2024 Jaguar F-PACE P400 R-Dynamic S starts at $76,400 MSRP and is available now.
What inspired you to make the move to Canada, and how has your journey been so far?
We moved to Canada for Andrew’s higher education and chose to relocate as a family to stay together. Additionally, I saw this as an opportunity to relaunch my career, as I had paused work after the birth of my son.
Where did you first stay when you arrived in Canada?
Andrew arrived in Canada before us and had arranged for us to stay at St. Andrew’s Hall in UBC, a student residence. Initially, he had stayed with a friend upon his arrival. The student housing welcomed families from around the world, and we thoroughly enjoyed our twoyear stay there.
How would you describe your experience finding a job in Canada?
To be honest, finding a job was challenging. I explored various positions before finally landing the role I have now.
Andrew Devanbu, a dedicated researcher, moved to Canada in 2016, followed by his wife Ruth Vivek, a logistics specialist at AlgaeCal Inc. They live in Surrey with their two children, Timothy, 13, and Diya, 10.
What were some of the biggest surprises or challenges you faced when you first arrived?
We arrived in June, and Vancouver's weather was lovely, with UBC in full bloom. However, as time passed, the weather turned wet. Since we weren't accustomed to much rain back in India, adjusting took a while. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of public transport, especially how well it accommodates the elderly, children, and people with disabilities.
How has your experience as an immigrant shaped your view of Canada as a country?
Canada welcomes immigrants from all over the world, and people are particularly supportive within student communities. Additionally, each province operates almost like its own country, with unique laws and policies, so it's important to familiarize yourself with these before moving.
What’s one Canadian custom or tradition you’ve come to love?
I love Thanksgiving, when the entire country takes a moment to appreciate what
