Given your involvement in the sport, could you tell us about your journey in cricket?
I began my cricket journey playing for local clubs like PAKCAN and volunteering with BCMCL. I progressed to roles as VP and then President of Cricket BC, serving twelve years. I also spent three years as a Director at the national level. Last year, I served as VP of Cricket Canada, and in April, I was elected President of Cricket Canada.
What will be your top priority in your new role as Cricket Canada President?
As President of Cricket Canada, I will focus on development and infrastructure, enhancing grassroots initiatives in schools, colleges, and university leagues. Regarding infrastructure, we are building on existing frameworks like Toronto's GT20 tournament and exploring expansions westward. Additionally, we're collaborating with a major league starting in Brampton, ON, with plans to extend to West Vancouver in the future.
What changes have you witnessed in the growth of cricket at both the local and national levels within the country?
In recent years, the influx of new immigrant students and families has significantly increased participation in cricket. This surge has enriched local clubs at schools and universities with talented players, promising a bright future for the sport.
Cricket is still primarily played by immigrants. How do you hope to involve kids and youth born and raised here and garner interest in them?
We have initiated community outreach in Ontario, particularly in Toronto, where coaches introduce cricket in primary schools. The schools are equipped with course materials for teaching cricket, and this successful model is poised for expansion into BC and other provinces.
DARPAN
Amjad Bajwa
PRESIDENT OF CRICKET CANADA
In this edition of D10, we sat down with Amjad Bajwa, the newly elected President of Cricket Canada, to discuss the future of cricket in Canada. As one of the country's fastest-growing sports, we explore his plans and visions for advancing the game nationwide.
As the newly elected President of Cricket Canada, what will be your mandate for the organization? I plan to build on the policies implemented by the previous President and enhance them further. Additionally, I will seek private sponsorships, building on existing partnerships with TD Bank, Coca-Cola, O'Neills, Nissan, and other sponsors.
Now that the cricket season is underway, what's in store for this year?
Locally, there is a lot going on in cricket, and on the national stage, we're excited for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June—Canada's first qualification. This follows our significant achievement of gaining ODI status. The teams have been announced and are actively preparing, with some athletes
training in Saint Kitts in mid-May before heading to the World Cup.
What strategies does Cricket Canada plan to implement to secure corporate support for the sport of cricket itself?
We have partnered with Boundary North to secure corporate sponsorships. They successfully approached TD and are currently finalizing partnerships with Nissan and O'Neills. We're also engaging smaller companies to broaden our corporate support.
What are your expectations for the upcoming World Cup, and how is the preparation going?
We are set to face strong teams like Pakistan, India, the USA, and Ireland in the upcoming World Cup. Playing against these teams could be a historic highlight for us at the tournament.
As an associate nation, how do you intend to cultivate and expand Cricket Canada's talent pools?
We'll support local clubs and leagues to involve more players at the grassroots. Every two years, we'll raise the bar by hosting the Under-17 Canada Cup, selecting players for an Under-19 pool, which will feed into a merging team. This strategy will help us draft players for future teams.
What measures do you intend to take to tackle the lack of support for those aiming to make cricket their full-time career, especially regarding financial assistance?
Last year was historic as we offered full-time contracts for the first time in Canada, supporting 12 players, with additional part-time contracts, thanks to the Global T20 and Boundary North leagues. With corporate backing, we were able to provide these contracts. My goal is to secure more financial support from major corporations. Our main revenue sources are the International Cricket Council, corporate sponsors, and some federal government assistance.

EMPOWERING YOUTH AND SHAPING THE FUTURE SUHANA GILL
At the young age of 17, Suhana Gill is making waves in both the pageantry world and the realm of environmental activism. A Bachelor of Arts student in Political Science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Gill graduated two
years earlier from highschool, and was accepted into university at the age of 15. Gill's passion for Canadian politics and environmental advocacy shines through in her various endeavors.
Raised in Surrey, British Columbia, Gill's journey into pageantry be-
gan unexpectedly at the age of 17 when her aunts encouraged her to participate in a local pageant. Despite initial hesitation, Gill embraced the opportunity as a chance to challenge herself and step out of her comfort zone. Supported by her parents and the wider community, she
embarked on a path that would eventually lead her to be crowned Miss Teenage Southern British Columbia.
However, Gill's impact extends far beyond the realm of beauty pageants. With a deep-rooted passion for environmental activism, she established the Bluer & Greener initiative to raise awareness about climate change and engage youth in advocacy efforts. Through this initiative, Gill aims to empower young people to take action and support impactful environmental organizations, fostering a sense of responsibility for the planet's well-being.
In addition to her environmental advocacy, Gill is blazing a trail in the field of corporate law. Despite the male-dominated nature of the industry, she remains steadfast in her determination to pursue her career goals. With aspirations of running for political office, Gill is driven by the belief in the importance of diverse representation in all fields, “I am motivated by the desire to be a role model for young girls, showing them that their voices are essential and can profoundly shape our society.”
Balancing multiple commitments may seem daunting, but for Gill, it's all about prioritization and living in the moment. Whether she's advocating for environmental justice, preparing for the Miss Teenage Canada pageant, or representing women's interests at her university, Gill approaches each endeavor with passion and determination.
The powerhouse shares, “I have been elected the Women’s Representative for the Kwantlen Student Association to represent the women out of the 22,000 students within the university. I believe it is important that women empower one another, because when one of us wins, all of us win.” Surely, as she celebrates her upcoming 18th birthday and enters her third year of university, Gill's list of accomplishments continues to grow.
Through her advocacy, leadership, and unwavering commitment to creating positive change, Suhana Gill is indeed leaving a lasting impression on the world around her. In Gill's own words, "With one goal in mind, before I leave this world, I hope to make a positive impact, and be remembered by the hearts I touched."

BREAKING RECORDS WITH POLAR PREET
Preet Chandi, famously known as Polar Preet, has etched her name in history by shattering records and defying expectations in the icy expanses of Antarctica. Her remarkable journey, marked by resilience and determination, serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring adventurers worldwide. Growing up, adventure wasn't a familiar concept for Chandi. However, the allure of the unknown drew her to Antarctica, sparking a desire to embark on a journey that transcended personal limits and inspired others to dream big. Reflecting on her expeditions, Chandi
shares the challenges she faced and the invaluable lessons learned along the way, “I was told so many times that I couldn’t achieve things, I was encouraged to stay in this box and I just wanted to show others that they can achieve anything they want. I have found people often project their own fears onto you and not everyone wants to see you succeed. It is important for me to show that it does not matter where you are from, what you look like, or what your background is - you can do anything!”
By Naina GrewalChandi has now been to Antarctica three times, setting the below records:
1.Expedition One: Chandi breaks ground as the first woman of color to undertake a solo Antarctic expedition, covering 700 miles in 40 days.
2.Expedition Two: Chandi sets the record for the longest solo, unsupported one-way polar ski expedition, conquering 922 miles across the frozen wilderness in 70 days.
3.Expedition Three: Chandi achieves the title of the fastest female to ski solo to the south pole, spanning 700 Miles in just 31 days of grueling effort.
Chandi's decision to attempt the solo crossing of Antarctica was fueled by a thirst for adventure and a desire to test her limits. Despite falling short of her initial goal, she embraced the journey's inherent struggles and emerged stronger, armed with newfound resilience and wisdom. As a woman of color in the world of polar exploration, Chandi hopes to pave the way for future generations, challenging societal norms and inspiring individuals to defy limitations. Undoubtedly, her expeditions transcend personal achievement, serving as a testament to the power of perseverance and the boundless potential within each individual. Looking ahead, Chandi remains steadfast in her commitment to adventure and exploration. While relishing a well-deserved period of recovery, she eagerly anticipates future endeavors and the opportunity to share her experiences with a broader audience. Through her upcoming children's book and ongoing advocacy, Chandi aims to ignite a sense of curiosity and adventure in others, encouraging them to embark on their own transformative journeys.
That said, Chandi emphasizes the importance of embracing failure and persevering in the face of adversity, “I think it is really easy to look at the success of others and not the journey it took to get there. For example, I’m an Army Officer and have done three big expeditions in Antarctica. When I joined the Army at 19 as a private soldier, I didn’t tell anyone in my family because it wasn’t what was expected of me. I found that often when I wanted to do something different, I was told no. I ignored those comments and tried anyway. It was really hard and I’ve had many failures along the way, but that is what has helped me get here today. I’m sure I will continue to fail along the way and learn. Whatever it is you want to try, just start. There is no step that is too small. In fact, my first step was typing on Google, ‘How to get to Antarctica’, about 5 years ago!”
Surely, Chandi’s journey from humble beginnings to record-breaking expeditions serves as a reminder that no dream is too big and no obstacle insurmountable. With unwavering determination and a courageous spirit, Chandi continues to inspire and empower individuals worldwide to pursue their passions and embrace the unknown.

Indian Ties
IndianTies, founded by Heather and Siddharth Chatterjee, is a venture born out of a desire to bridge the gap between Indian heritage and North American upbringing for their children. Initially starting as a blog focusing on
intercultural relationships, IndianTies transformed two years ago, pivoting towards a new direction to connect kids with their Indian roots through storytelling and interactive resources.
"Getting caught up in our naturally busy lifestyles is easy. However, unless we intentionally plan cultural experiences for our kids and tell them stories about our childhood or travels in India, it's hard for them to grasp Indian culture. If children have their own experiences to draw on, they are even more likely to connect with the Indian culture," elaborates Heather.
Driven by pride, appreciation, and understanding of Indian heritage, IndianTies aims to instill these values in children growing up in North America. Heather and Siddharth recognized the need for intentional efforts to immerse their children in Indian culture, which led to the development of IndianTies
Mystery Letters, a monthly subscription service catering to kids aged 7-12.
Through the Mystery Letters, subscribers embark on a virtual journey across India, visiting nearly every state. Each month, children receive a package containing a letter from a virtual pen-pal detailing a new destination in India. Accompanying the letter are interactive elements and activities designed to engage young minds and foster a deeper understanding of Indian culture. Each month, subscribers receive a large envelope in the mail, including:
• A full-color, two-page, illustrated introduction letter
• A souvenir postcard from the destination
• Three sealed clue cards
• A special custom-designed paper craft or activity that goes along with the story
• A sealed conclusion letter to open after the mystery is solved
• And more!
Despite the diverse landscape of India presenting a challenge in covering every aspect of its culture, IndianTies focuses on spotlighting each state, aiming to spark curiosity and encourage further exploration among families. By providing immersive experiences, IndianTies hopes to counteract the drift from Indian culture that can occur in busy lifestyles.
Sharing a heartwarming
anecdote, Heather recounts how their daughter identified her dentist's roots in Kerala, "I was shocked and asked her how she knew. She said, 'By his last name…we just visited that state in IndianTies!'" Such experiences highlight the impact of storytelling and engagement in connecting children with their cultural heritage. With a commitment to fostering cultural connections and
learning as a family, IndianTies stands as a beacon for celebrating and preserving Indian heritage globally.
In an exclusive offer for DARPAN readers, IndianTies is offering a free downloadable Mini Mystery Letter (here) and a special discount code, SPECIAL2024, offering $5 off a new subscription for the first three months for those subscribing to IndianTies Mystery Letters.
Spring Renewal
Decluttering the Mind for Mental Clarity
By Naina GrewalA
s Nature awakens from its winter slumber, spring offers the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate our minds and embrace a sense of renewal. Although the season is well-known for decluttering physical spaces, decluttering the mind is equally important. By building small habits that shape a more holistic self, mental clarity can pave the path for a more fulfilling life.
Mindfulness Coach at Still Here, Canadian Certified Recovery Coach (CCRC), and Recovery Coach Facilitator (RCPF), Shelley Shadow, highlights that the breath, readily available to us at all times, is a powerful anchor for our attention. "In any given moment, presence is available simply by becoming aware of the breath, exactly as it is in this moment. In this way, spring, renewal, and new life are all available by being intentional with our focused awareness," notes Shadow. By becoming aware of our breath at any moment, we can tap into a sense of presence and clarity. Whether indoors or outdoors, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life or in moments of solitude, the breath serves as our
gateway to inner peace and renewal. Shadow further explains that mindfulness isn't about having no thoughts but only focusing the mind to become aware of what is happening in the body, in the senses, even as the mind is active. "The mind will do what it was designed to do: to think. Our focus will be to become aware of what is happening in the body, our environment, and even the emotional realm. The moment we notice our attention has gone back to our thoughts, we're already back. Then, with intention and without judgment, we return to our focus of awareness — breath, body, senses — whatever is our chosen entry point for our mindfulness session," highlights Shadow.
As a mindfulness and meditation teacher, Registered Therapeutic Counselor (RTC), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Therapeutic Art Practitioner, Riti Batra outlines that she has witnessed firsthand the transformative power mindfulnessoriented practices can have on our lives, "Integrating mindfulness and wellness into your daily routine doesn't require
big changes. Instead, it involves simple, consistent actions that nurture peace and well-being." Batra points out some actionable steps to help you create a more mindful and rejuvenated life:
1. Start Your Day with Intention: Begin each morning with silence. Sit quietly for a few minutes, setting intentions for the day ahead. This practice helps ground you and aligns your actions with your values and goals,
ensuring a purpose-driven start to your day.
2. Practice Mindful Breathing: Throughout the day, take short breaks to focus on your breathing. You can do this anywhere and at any time. Concentrate on taking slow, deep breaths to help center your mind and reduce stress. This technique is especially useful in hightension situations, offering an immediate sense of calm.
3. Engage in Daily Physical Activity: Incorporate some form of movement into your daily routine, whether it's yoga, walking, or a light workout. Physical activity not only boosts your health but also clears your mind, enhancing your ability to remain present and engaged.
4. Schedule Time for Reflection: End your day with a reflection period. Spend 10-15 minutes reviewing what went well and what could be improved. Journaling can be particularly effective during this time, as it allows you to process thoughts

You were all exceptionally organized, and it’s clear through every detail of the event that you all put your heart, drive, and so much care into it. SAAYA BHANDARI
A
NEW FORCE IN LACROSSE
At just 17 years old, Saaya Bhandari is already a prominent name in Canadian lacrosse, known for her skill, tenacity, and ability to inspire. As a player who has shattered barriers and fostered diversity within the sport, Saaya brings a fresh perspective to lacrosse, a field where female athletes of colour like herself were once scarce.
Saaya's lacrosse journey began at seven, influenced by her father's passion for sports. Her early exposure to the sport was not just about playing; it was about becoming part of a growing community and pushing the boundaries of what athletes of her background could achieve. Today, she not only plays for Team BC, which she joined in 2020, but also holds a pivotal role in promoting diversity through her involvement with Nations United—the US select diversity team sponsored by Nike.
Her accolades are impressive. In 2022, Saaya was recognized with
Qa coach's award from British Columbia Lacrosse for her outstanding contributions to the team. Her prowess extends across different styles of lacrosse, having competed at the highest levels in both field and box lacrosse, and she has been an All-Star team member. Saaya's recent acceptance of a Division 1 lacrosse scholarship to Longwood University in the United States marks a significant milestone, enabling her to pursue pre-medicine while continuing her athletic career.
Coaches and mentors are quick to praise Saaya's attributes. "Saaya is not just an athlete; she's a natural leader whose hard work sets an example," says Megan Kinna, a Team Canada player and one of Saaya's coaches. Kevin Crowley, a professional player and owner of Fusion West, also notes her resilience and competitiveness, stating, "Saaya plays with an edge that makes her a true competitor and a leader on her team."

Opening Doors Of Education
By Shweta KulkarniThere is an old saying that states – ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ The proverb resonates with the co-founder and director of Mumbai’s Door Step School
— Bina Sheth Lashkari, who firmly believes in the transformative power of education.
For over 35 years, Bina has dedicated herself to providing educational opportunities to children living in the streets, slum areas as well as children from the most marginalized communities. Through initiatives like Door Step School and School on Wheels, Bina has brightened the lives of over 200,000 children, illuminating their path with the light of knowledge. Breaking away from traditional classroom
settings, Bina embarked on a mission to bring education directly to the doorsteps of the children, who lacked access to basic education.
Reminiscing her journey, Bina says, “In 1988, after studying Child Psychology, I went to the USA. But I soon felt homesick and returned with a strong desire to do something for my country. Despite family pressure to prioritize marriage, I remained steadfast and
One day, a student came to us and said, 'Didi, today I cleaned 6 kgs of fish, but our contractor wrote only 3 kgs.' Because this student was taught by us, she understood the discrepancy and confronted the contractor. This incident was significant for us because it showed that the children were grasping the importance of education.
completed my Master's in Social Work. During my field placement in a municipal school, I discovered that many students dropped out of schools to support their families and were working in the nearby docks area. When I interacted with their parents, I understood there was no chance that they would be coming back to school as they were earning hands. Looking at the condition they were living in, I understood their plight as well. So, I adapted
a different approach. I began interacting with the parents of these communities, and spending time with these children after their work hours. Just engaging them in conversations about their interests and aspirations. So that was my starting point.”
In her efforts to connect with
these children, Bina recognized that traditional schooling might not be practical. This realization sparked her innovative idea: : if the children couldn't come to school, why not bring the school to them? Thus, Door Step School was born. The school faced numerous challenges, especially in persuading children and parents to participate. Bina recalls, “I had been teaching these children for a year and I discovered that the kids were eager to learn. However, they were afraid that I would force them to go to school if they started learning, and the parents feared that if their children went to school, they would stop working. So, they would often hide their children or send them away when I approached. Convincing both children and parents was challenging. I assured the parents that I understood their circumstances and didn't want to take their children away from work. I was only coming there to teach them the basic ability to read and write. In the second year in 1989, I got a better response. When kids started realizing how basic literacy is helping them in their day-to-day lives.”
The biggest achievement came when one of the pupils of the Door Step School actually stood up to her contractor. Bina recounts, “One day, a student came to us and said, 'Didi, today I cleaned 6 kgs of fish, but our contractor wrote only 3 kgs.' Because this student was taught by us, she understood the discrepancy and confronted the contractor. This incident was significant for us because it showed that the children were grasping the importance of education. It also helped parents realize that when their children learned to read and write, they couldn't be easily exploited.”
Gradually, Door Step School expanded its reach and in 1990, it introduced pre-primary programs called Balwadi. These programs aimed to teach basic literacy to young children and preparing them for higher grades in school. Bina attributes the success of all these programs to her team of hardworking teachers. She emphasizes, "All credit goes to my team of teachers who work tirelessly. They visit the children's homes, speak with their parents, and persuade them to send their children to study. Also, our teachers are local women whom we train. They don’t hold any degrees but come from similar backgrounds, which helps them understand the community we serve better.”
While convincing parents to send their children to school has been a significant challenge, the children even-
tually showed enthusiasm for learning. Bina explains, "Our classes were non-formal. Teachers would ask questions like 'How many kilos did you clean today?' or 'What did you eat?' These informal conversations made learning engaging. Our program's structure is another reason for their interest. We start with stories, songs, and games before diving into studies. Even today, we use a variety of teaching materials like puzzles to make learning enjoyable. We focus on building a strong bond between teachers and students and creating a nurturing environment.”
Further, recognizing that many children on the streets were also denied education, Bina pioneered the concept of School on Wheels. Speaking about its inception, she says, “We first started with classes on the streets, but soon realized that we needed an undisturbed environment to see visible progress. This led to the inception of mobile schools. Today, we operate seven mobile schools in Mumbai and ten in Pune, and teach about 100-125 students daily.”
Door Step School and School on Wheels go beyond basic education; they actively encourage reading programs and conduct remedial classes to ensure that their students receive the support needed to progress in life.
Bina’s has also won several awards, including the Stree Shakti Puraskar in 2013 by the president of India. Despite the accolades, Bina remains

humble, stating, “I have not worked for awards. I enjoy what I do. My only goal has been and is that more and more children should go to school and be educated. Education is the key. I don't need to teach them how to earn, I don't need to teach them how to escape poverty. If I educate them, I am making them capable of solving all their problems on their own and carving their own destiny.”
Witnessing her students succeed serves as a powerful motivation. She shares, “This has been a challenging journey but a fulfilling one too. I feel extremely happy when I see these kids doing well. Some of our children today are in accounts, some in the medical field, some in banking. Their achievements keep me motivated. Some of the street kids were beggars, and some even drug peddlers, but after they came to us, they refused to engage in that sort of work now. So, I'm happy that I chose the right track.”
Bina Sheth Lashkari’s story is not merely inspiring; it is a narrative of resilience and testament to the belief that education is the most potent tool for changing the world.

When the K-beauty trend blew into western countries just over a decade ago, it brought a revolutionary approach to skin care. The Koreans and the Japanese historically have heavily invested in product R&D and, culturally, skin care has been central to their approach to beauty. Their fabulous skin is a testament to the success of this philosophy.
Western beauty afficionados enthusiastically embraced this approach which involved multi-step regimens—sometimes as many as 17 steps—in the quest for flawless complexions and fighting off the signs of aging.
Inevitably with trends, after a fashion, the pendulum swings the other direction, and such is the case with skin care. Enter skin streaming, the recent viral beauty trend featured all
over social and legacy media.
“Skin streaming is based on the concept of paring down your skin care regimen to focus on just the essentials that deliver maximum impact,” explains Desiree Stordahl, Paula's Choice Director of Applied Research & Education. “It’s the antidote to skin care overload we see on social media that has gone from entertaining to overwhelming.”
Kim Bubenko, National Education Executive for Shiseido Canada, says the real benefit of the minimizing of skin care routines is that it helps target skin issues. The key, she says, is focussing on active ingredients applied in that pared-back routine which will give you the best result.
“So really, [it’s] slimming it down but getting ingredients and products that are really effective and targeted solutions.”
So how to decide what steps can be discarded and what should remain?
That depends on one’s unique concerns and needs, but there
are a few steps that both experts insist should be retained for a healthy complexion.
“One thing that you absolutely cannot remove from you skin care routine, in my opinion as a Japanese skin care expert, is the double cleansing routine. It’s removing your makeup and then cleansing your skin,” Bubenko advises. “So you’re using an oil-based makeup remover and following with a water-based
cleanser.”
Stordahl concurs that cleansing is essential but says
By Michele Markoto avoid any harsh face washes. Exfoliation with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) is something else that must be retained, Stordahl says. These gentle acids soften and clear the skin, producing noticeable results. “These non-abrasive chemical exfoliants provide the most dramatically visible difference for overturning rough texture, uneven tone, clogged pores and a myriad of other issues caused by built up dead skin. Think of it as a shortcut to unveiling your skin’s best potential and healthy glow–even just a few times a week can make a huge difference.”
Maintaining hydration is an essential part of a skin regimen but effective hydration can be achieved without multiple layers of product. Bubenko suggests finding a moisturizer you can use both for day and evening. Or if you have different ones for day or night, then perhaps find one that incorporates an eye cream. Admittedly, she says, that combination isn’t that common, but Clé de Peau Beauté does
one, but ultra-lightweight moisturizers can double as an eye cream too.
Both Bubenko and Stordahl are adamant that sunscreen should not ever be left out from anyone’s skin care regimen.
“Above all else, sun protection [is] the No. 1 non-negotiable for healthy skin.,” Stordahl insists. “While you might be able to get away with streamlining other skin care steps, sunscreen is the one thing you cannot skip.”
One way to cut back on steps is the previously mentioned two- or three-in-one products. A daytime moisturizer with a sunscreen is an effortless way to reduce the number of products.
“The one thing that you can definitely remove from your routine is the multi-serum steps,” says Bubenko. “You don’t need to have multiple serums in your morning or night routine. You can split them up. Get the best out of your Vitamin C by using it during the day because that’s when it’s most effective. It’s an antioxidant and it’s preventing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress more often happens during the day.”
Take the same approach for other targeted ingredients. For retinol, it’s most effective at night when your skin is in its recuperation or regenerative mode.
Discarding products from a regimen depends on individual skin needs, Stordahl notes, but some people “may find that face masks, toners, essences, serums, etc. are less of a priority and can be omitted from a daily routine. Skip gadgets like ice rollers, jade rollers and Gua Sha.”
Bubenko suggests that if you want to ensure that your skin is getting the attention it needs once you’ve condensed your regimen, apply masks during relaxation time on the weekend.
“Skin care is about pleasure.,” she says. “It’s about taking time for yourself. It can’t feel regretful or guilty that you didn’t put something on.”

Art of Thread is not just a store; it's a realm where each thread weaves a story of heritage and exclusivity
The Weaving of Dreams
Art of Thread introducing
to surrey
By Monica SethiAtransformative chapter in luxury Indian fashion is poised to begin in Surrey with the opening of Art of Thread. This opulent store promises to redefine the traditional Indian attire shopping experience for the community that has long yearned for accessible, handcrafted elegance without the need to journey back to India. Sandeep Kaur Chohan, the visionary founder and designer, is set to bring her long-cherished dream to life in June, offering a collection that speaks directly to the soul of luxury and craftsmanship. Sandeep's initial foray into the fashion world began at Fabric Land, where her innate talents quickly became evident. Colleagues and customers recognized her exceptional flair for colour coordination, skillful draping techniques, and deep understanding of fabrics. These early experiences sparked a lifelong passion, leading Sandeep to design exquisite outfits for herself and her two daughters. Her creations, celebrated for their elegance and individuality, captured the admiration of all who saw them. This profound connection with textiles has led her to create a sanctuary for luxury Indian wear right in Surrey, eliminating the community's need to travel overseas for authentic, luxurious outfits.
"Art of Thread is not just a store; it's a realm where each thread weaves a story of heritage and exclusivity," Sandeep shares. "Our mission is to make everyone who wears our creations feel like royalty, embodying the opulence and grandeur of our meticulously crafted pieces. It's my passion project, a tribute to the art shaping my vision and life."
At Art of Thread, each garment is a testament to the uniqueness and rarity that define true luxury. These pieces are designed to become cherished heirlooms passed down through generations. The backbone of its inventory is its commitment to craftsmanship. Sandeep has collaborated with artisans from India, including those specializing in Lucknowi Chikankari, Bandhani, and intricate Benarasi work. "We are bringing the best of India's artistic traditions under one roof. For instance, our Rangkaath dupattas are crafted by some of the last remaining maestros of this age-old art. Owning one is like owning a piece of history," explains Sandeep.
Beyond providing luxury, Art of Thread aims to highlight and preserve the traditional skills of Indian kaarigars (artisans). These artisans, often overshadowed by the rapid pace of machine-made fashion, will find their stories and processes showcased through Art of Thread's robust social media presence and a special documentary. This initiative not only celebrates their craftsmanship but also sustainably supports their livelihoods.
The essence of Art of Thread lies in its dual commitment to affordability and luxury. Sandeep's design philosophy marries the opulence of traditional Indian attire with the practicalities of modern aesthetics, all while ensuring that the artisans receive fair compensation for their irreplaceable skill. "We are setting our prices to simply cover costs, ensuring fair pay for our artisans and the sustainability of our store. Every piece sold here carries the weight of our love for art, not the burden of profit," she asserts.
The store itself is crafted to reflect the luxury of its offerings. Designed to be a tranquil yet grand space, it welcomes everyone to experience the richness of fabrics and designs curated with the utmost care and respect for tradition. Here, customers can also create custom outfits tailored to reflect their personal style and heritage.
As Art of Thread prepares to open its doors, it promises to be more than just a store—it will be a cultural landmark for Surrey, offering a piece of their heritage beautifully woven into the fabric of their daily lives. This initiative not only fills a crucial gap in the local luxury market but also deeply enriches the community it aims to serve, ensuring that the art of thread continues to inspire and awe for generations to come.

Q: How did you meet?
We met at our workplace in September 2022. I used to work from home while Harman worked from the office a couple of days a week. But for the last couple of weeks in September, I was in the process of moving from my old place, so I had to come to the office to work. Harman and I started talking to each other and grew closer over time.
Q: What do you love the most about one another?
Harman: I love how caring and supporting Rosy is and how she makes a safe space for me to talk about whatever I have on my mind.
Rosy: Harman's kind and curious and has a great sense of humour.
Q: Could you share your proposal story?
We had gone to Victoria to celebrate my birthday. Our Airbnb was right on the beach, and on the night of my birthday, we were relaxing on beach chairs near the fire pit and looking at the ocean. Harman gave me a small jewelry box as my birthday present and asked me to open it. I opened it & inside there was just a piece of paper which said "Thank you for making my life the fullest & best ever! Love you unlimited." and then at the bottom of the paper it said "Flip me" so I turned the paper, and there it said, "Will you marry me?" I looked at Harman; he was holding a ring, and I said yes immediately. It was all such a pleasant surprise for me.

Q: Describe your wedding day and your favourite moment.
Our wedding day was full of hustle & bustle and nervous energy, so many of our family members & friends were all around us giving us advice on Anand Karaj. Our favourite moment was sitting together after our laavan in Gurudwara sahib.
We just sat there looking at each other for the first time as husband and wife, and all our nervousness just disappeared. We looked forward to spending the rest of our lives together.
Q: Could you tell us about your reception?
Our reception was everything we wanted; at the palace (Dhaliwal Banquet), the décor was so dreamy and complimented our dresses. To surprise us, quite a few of our family members had prepared dance performances. We loved celebrating our wedding with our family & friends.
Q: How was your experience with the photography team? Would you recommend it to others?
Our experience with them was great, as they are pretty awesome. They were so accommodating and always made sure that we were comfortable and happy with the whole process. We were so ecstatic when we looked at the results. We would highly recommend A Master Media to others.
Q: Can you describe your outfits?
I wore a rust-orange lehenga, and Harman wore an off-white sherwani with golden palla and turban matching the colour of my lehnga for the wedding. For the reception, I wore a cream-beige evening gown, and Harman wore an elegant dark brown suit, turban, and light brown tie.
Q: Where did you go for your honeymoon?
We have not yet gone on our honeymoon, but we plan to visit Japan or Europe later this year.
Q: What are your goals as a couple?
We want to continue working hard, achieving our dreams, and growing individually and together. We also want to be there for each other and talk to each other about anything on our minds.
Q: What are your favourite quotes?
Harman likes this quote by Plato: "Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow." I like this quote by Tina Turner: "I believe that if you'll just stand up and go, life will open up for you."
Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?
Don't be afraid to be vulnerable. Never underestimate the power of communication. We can resolve so many things just by being open and honest with each other.
2024 MERCEDES BENZ
EQE 500 SUV
SPORTY ELECTRIC CROSSOVER
The Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 SUV is the grade-topping counterpart to the EQE Sedan that offers a performance-oriented zero emissions motoring experience in a crossover form factor.
Surprisingly, the 500 has slightly more compact dimensions than the four-door with a 90-millimetre shorter wheelbase. This results in a sporty-looking package complemented by the aggressive front bumper, side skirts, silver rear diffuser and available 21-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels (+ $1,430). Signature EQ elements like the full-length daytime running light LED bar and solid black panel grille are present.
I prefer the standard 12.8-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display and the star-pattern dashboard in our loaner over the massive Hyperscreen add-on. The built-in Navigation with Electric Intelligence automatically calculates the quickest and most convenient route to a destination — factoring in charging stops along the way — and reacts to changes in traffic and operation style on the fly.
A fourth option, “Serene Breeze,” inspired by nature, has been added to the audio soundscapes menu, creating various relaxing driving moods. The Black/Space Grey leather is subtle and classy, though I’m disappointed to see the steering wheel paddle shifters made of plastic rather than alloy.

2024 Range Rover Autobiography LWB
A NEW STANDARD FOR PREMIUM UTILITY VEHICLES
The 2024 Range Rover Autobiography LWB (long wheelbase) might just be the most beautiful seven-passenger SUV on the market today.
“New Range Rover is a vehicle with a peerless character, from the impeccable restraint of its exterior to the flawless tranquil sanctuary of its cabin. Informed by creative intellect and a desire for perfection, it doesn’t follow fashion or trend, but by a modernist design philosophy, combined with over 50 years of evolution,” says Gerry McGovern, Jaguar Land Rover chief creative officer, in a media release.
Subtly evolving the styling with each generation, the full-size SUV echoes heritage models via the high sill line and short overhangs, while adding in contemporary elements including a slimmed-down headlights and grille, boat tail rear and curved body panels. The exterior more than simply looks windswept — JLR says the aerodynamic 0.30 drag coefficient rating is the lowest in the segment. Pretty impressive for a 5,258-millimetre long three-row people hauler.
The full-width bar, finished in classy satin chrome, found within the lower central intake conceals the foglights, forward radar and parking sensors. A friend pointed out to me the dual shark fin antennae atop the roof are an odd design choice, however according to the manufacturer is something unavoidable due to all the large amounts of wireless connectivity the vehicles currently require.

A nice feature is that upon approach and carrying the key fob, the flush mounted door handles pop out and welcome lighting illuminates. I’m happy to report the latest iteration still boasts the plushest, most comfortable chairs on the market. The front pair, swathed in semi-aniline leather, are 24-way adjustable, heated and cooled and have strong multi-zone massaging functionality. Even the Executive Class Comfort seats in the back have four-way powered lumbar and headrest adjustment, and are four-degree inclinable and 12-degree reclinable.
The 13.1-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system is complemented by a crystal-clear Meridian Signature stereo and optional rear seat entertainment package, though I was surprised to discover the second-row displays cannot stream any content but is rather restricted to plugging in media using an HDMI cable. Nearly everything is touchcontrolled and in my opinion at least a few physical knobs in the centre stack would allow for simpler operation.
A beefy new flagship P530 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 — producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque — propels the 6,000-plus-pound behemoth, and the engine is 17 per cent more efficient than the previous eight-cylinder. A smooth eight-speed automatic takes care of shifting duties.
The Electronic Air Suspension with Dynamic Response Pro keeps the ride supple at all times no matter the road conditions, and the combination of all-wheel steering, Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking and multiple camera views makes driving this extended Range Rover much easier than anticipated.
THE 2024 RANGE ROVER AUTOBIOGRAPHY LWB IS AVAILABLE NOW AND RETAILS FOR MSRP $219,400.
Q&A
Q1. How long have you been associated with Porsche and the automotive industry?
I have 22 years of experience in the Automotive Industry, representing brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ferrari, and Porsche. I have been associated with Porsche for the past five years.
Q2. How did Porsche's debut electric vehicle, Taycan, resonate with consumers and enthusiasts?
Porsche is relatively new to the EV Market. We launched Porsche Taycan in 2020, and it was immediately well-received by consumers. This was not your stereotypical dull-looking and boring-to-drive EV. Enthusiasts loved the athletic and futuristic design; to complement that, it drove like a Porsche, a true sports car.
Q3. Has the BC government's implementation of a luxury tax impacted the demand for high-end cars?
Porsche is a niche brand that is considered a want versus a need.
with Jay Sidhu
Sales Executive at Porsche Centre Langley
Consumers don't need one, but they aspire to own one. When the BC government implemented the luxury tax, it initially slowed the market for 6/9 months. However, consumers got used to it, just like the cost of living in Vancouver.
Q4. What specific directives has Porsche outlined regarding its involvement in the electric vehicle market?
Porsche and many other automakers are intensifying their investment in EV technology in response to global demand and governmental regulations to reduce emissions. As part of its "Strategy 2030," Porsche aims to achieve CO-neutral operations across its entire value chain by 2030, emphasizing sustainability as a core priority. The company voluntarily undergoes annual evaluations by ISS ESG, a sustainability rating agency, to assess its environmental, social, and corporate governance efforts. Porsche is committed to being recognized as a leader in sustainability within the automotive industry.
Q5. What key factors should individuals consider when purchasing a car,
and can you highlight Porsche's most popular vehicle?
When purchasing a car, clients consider various factors such as vehicle type— SUV, sedan, or EV—and cost, based on their budget. The purchase method, whether leasing, financing, or cash, also plays a crucial role. Many professionals and self-employed individuals prefer leasing or financing for potential tax benefits and categorizing the vehicle as a business expense. The SUV dominates the automotive market in North America, and Porsche is no exception. Our bestsellers are the mid-sized Porsche Cayenne and the compact Porsche Macan, which offer practicality and year-round drivability while maintaining Porsche's iconic sporting characteristics.

We moved in 2019, a year that marked a new beginning for our family in this beautiful country.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?
We rented a place upon arrival rather than staying with relatives or friends. This allowed us to start putting down our roots right away.

Ramnath Kumar Designation: AVP, Riskat CWBWhat difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?
Initially, we lived in a very old house and couldn't afford to pay higher rent. Finding a job was also a challenge; despite my ten years of previous work experience, it took nearly a year. This period tested our resilience and adaptability. How long did it take to get used to the people, weather or the surroundings?
Adjusting to the surroundings was relatively quick since we lived close to downtown. The people were welcoming, and arriving in the summer helped us ease into the Canadian climate comfortably.
How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?
Finding employment was tough; I started with volunteering, eventually leading to a contract position at Hudson Bay. Unfortunately, I was laid off within two weeks due to COVID-related downsizing, which was quite disheartening.
What do you like and dislike most about this country?
I love the friendliness of the people here and the strong work-life balance, contrasting with the lush green spaces and minimal pollution.
However, the low population density makes it challenging to form close friendships, which can be particularly lonely during the long winters. How do you see your future in Canada?
I see a promising future for us here in Canada. Despite the challenges, the opportunities for personal and professional growth are substantial, and I am optimistic about our family's prospects.
How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?
Our journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but we have always moved forward. Considering the rising prices, securing a home just before COVID hit was a blessing. It's been a vibrant chapter of our lives filled with growth and learning.
