DARPAN’S 10

M

anjot S. Hallen, co-founder of Vancouverbased law firm Warnett Hallen LLP, is the President of the Liberal Party of Canada in British Columbia. Recently elected in March, Hallen is the first Indo-Canadian to become the Liberal Party’s president in British Columbia. A lawyer since 2005, he is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia and the South Asian Bar Association (BC). Hallen, along with his partner Paul Warnett, started Warnett Hallen in 2013. The firm has been growing successfully ever since. With thousands of cases to his credit, personal injury and car accident lawyer Hallen brings a wealth of experience to every client assignment. He shares through DARPAN’S 10 his success story and his plans ahead.

7 What initiatives do you plan to introduce for the party’s growth?

We are going to help our ridings, and in particular, those that need it the most. We need to offer support across the province in order to spread Liberal ideas and values and to elect even more Liberal MPs in every region of BC in 2019. I also want to help expand the party. There are opportunities for everyone to talk about and debate the most critical issues the country is facing and to help shape policies that can become law. It’s a great time to get involved and be a part of the political process.

1 How has your work journey been so far?

I wanted to practise law since I was very young. Upon finishing law school in Ontario, I entered one of the large established firms here in BC, and after a few years moved on to another very wellknown Vancouver-based firm. However, I have always had an entrepreneurial streak, so I decided to start my own firm about four years ago with my partner Paul Warnett. I really value the time I spent with the more established firms learning about the legal and business side of practise but the success that we have had since going on our own confirms that I made the right decision. 2 How do you perceive the growth and success

of Warnett Hallen since the time it was initiated?

We take nothing for granted. We work very hard to get our name out to as many people as we can. Meeting and talking to people is an essential part of growing your business, and that is something that we have understood from the very beginning. We are also primarily a referral-based business and there is no greater honour than when a client or former client is so happy with the work you have done that they want to refer a close friend or family member to you. We have had continued annual growth which has now reached a rapid pace. We are proud of the fact that we are about to open a new office downtown across from Nordstrom’s. It is a reminder of how far we have come. 3 What values do you practise to be successful

in what you do?

Three key values guide me in life generally. First is a strong work ethic. I believe you get what you put in and the results are directly correlated to how much effort you give. Second is perseverance. You have to stay focused. There are many obstacles and hurdles along the way. You have to have the strength to overcome them and to learn from your mistakes. Third is compassion. By the time someone comes to your office, they have been in a traumatic, potentially life-altering event like a car accident. Then, they have to take on a multi-

The other thing that I want to do is use the appeal of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reach out to people who might not have ever had an interest or any kind of involvement in politics. We want to show people that politics is about ideas and building the type of Canada that we want to see. I have been involved for close to 20 years and it has offered me some of the most fascinating, rewarding and exciting experiences of my life. I encourage everyone who is curious to jump in and see what the Liberal Party is all about.

Manjot Singh hallen Co-founder of Warnett Hallen and President of Liberal Party of Canada (BC)

million dollar insurance company. They need to feel like someone understands what they are going through and that someone is fighting for them. That’s where we come in. 4 Being a lawyer, what are your views on the law sector of Canada?

Law is so varied and diverse that it’s hard to make just one observation. One thing I can say is that I believe the profession is essential to society. The rule of the law is something that is the foundation of a democracy and lawyers are the ones that allow the law to be applied as it was intended. That is why I believe it to be an honourable profession. 5 What is your biggest achievement so far?

I would have to say building our firm from scratch. Seeing what we’ve been able to achieve in four short years and the resulting success is what I am most proud of. It is always a huge risk when you give up a good paying job and the security that goes with it to build something new, but it is also one of the most worthwhile and rewarding challenges I have ever experienced. 6 You are the President of the Liberal Party

of Canada (BC). What goals do you wish to achieve as president for the party?

It has been a great honour to be elected the first Indo-Canadian president of the Liberal Party of Canada in BC. I want to build on the success we had in 2015 where we elected 17 Members of Parliament (MPs) – which is the most that the Liberal Party of Canada has ever had in BC. We have a real opportunity for growth and I want to start focusing on the ridings that we didn’t win in 2015. TM

8 What, according to you, are the features of the Liberal Party? What does it lack?

The party excels in being a big tent. There are so many different viewpoints and people from different backgrounds and they all feel welcome. We are a party that isn’t based on ideology above all else but rather a party that is looking for the best and most practical solutions to the challenges that Canada faces. But there is always room for improvement. My plan is to work to build an even more robust party in every corner of our province, especially in smaller communities. 9 You have recently joined the Board of Directors for the BC Children’s Hospital Night of Miracles. How important is charity and community involvement to you?

Community involvement is very important to me. In the past few years I have witnessed the South Asian community come together to make the Night of Miracles one of the most high-profile successful charitable dinners in BC. BC Children’s Hospital is an amazing institution and I think it is important that we continue to support their cause, so that families can stay in BC to get the world class treatment they need. I am very proud to be on the Board this year and excited to continue to grow this event and expand the reach and awareness of how important the cause is. 10

What message would you like to give those who wish to follow your path?

There is no path to follow but your own. On that journey there are two pieces of advice that I would like to offer. First is stick to your vision. Don’t allow yourself to be knocked off your path. Pursue what motivates you and work hard to make it happen. Second, and most importantly, life is a long journey and there are peaks and valleys. Look at each experience as something you can learn from and always look to the long term as you progress towards achieving your goals. Hard work always pays off.

“Housing & transit top priorities for Vancouver City” By Petrina D’Souza Mayor Gregor Robertson shares his thoughts on the biggest challenges the City of Vancouver is currently facing, how he plans to deal with them, and his successful journey as the Mayor.

ancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson’s hard work and commitment since the past three terms has brought about an incredible change to the city and its residents. Addressing issues the City of Vancouver faces such as housing affordability, transit system, and homelessness, among others, Robertson has contributed greatly to the growth and development of the city. facing, how he plans to deal with them, and his successful journey as the Mayor.

What would you say are your major contributions to the City of Vancouver as Mayor? In recent years, we’ve become one of the most economically powerful cities in Canada and witnessed impressive job growth. Vancouver is leading the country in economic growth, and will continue to do so through 2019 at an average rate of over 3 per cent. We’ve also been rated by KPMG as fifth most competitive place to do business out of 29 major global cities, ahead of all U.S. west coast cities. Coming out of the Olympics we’re really hitting our stride and technology, innovation, green jobs, and creative industries which is great news for young people. It’s very promising for the city’s future to be one of the leading places in industries that are the fastest growing in the world right now.

address.

Talking about housing, Vancouver is also dealing with homelessness. What steps are taken to reduce or stop this issue?

The City is looking at all tools available to help relieve pressure on young families in an unaffordable housing market that has a lack of family friendly units and a rental vacancy rate of less than one per cent.” of Vancouver faces. How are your dealing with it? Housing affordability in the City of Vancouver is without question one of the most pressing issues our city has faced. I empathize with the anxieties of many families and young people who wish to contribute to the growth and diversity of the City, but who can’t afford to live here. It’s a complex problem that the solutions for require partnership, collaboration and willingness from all three levels of government. The City is looking at all tools available to help relieve pressure on young families in an unaffordable housing market that has a lack of family friendly units and a rental vacancy rate of less than one per cent. We’ve recently approved in principle an Affordable Home Ownership Pilot, the first of its kind in Vancouver that will allow young families to enter the housing market and put down roots in the city. Under the program, first-time buyers who have lived in Vancouver for the last five years would be eligible to participate in the program. At least one buyer must work in Vancouver, and cannot have owned property before. The eligible household income for the program ranges from $67,540 per year (single and couple households) up to $96,170 per year (households with at least one dependent child). The Affordable Home Ownership program is the latest measure the Council has adopted in creating affordable housing options to make Vancouver a place everyone can call home. Other actions on housing include:

t Directing staff to work with AirBNB and other listing services to collect data on the frequency and volume of short-term rental housing, t Approving a record 1,300+ new rental homes in 2015, t Offering 20 sites of City-owned land worth $250 million to senior governments to use for affordable housing, t Starting construction on the first belowmarket family rental building in the city in Southeast False Creek, t Researching the impact of empty homes in Vancouver’s housing market, t Calling for both a speculation tax and a luxury sales tax to create a more level playing field in the housing market, t Bringing in the strongest tenant protections of any municipality in BC to Vancouver, t Directing staff to increase family unit requirements in new housing projects, t Approving new incentives to create two and three bedroom units in new rental housing projects, and t Providing four City land sites to enable Vancouver’s first Community Land Trust. I’ve called upon the provincial government to introduce a speculation tax to slow down the practice of flipping houses, which treats housing as a commodity and intensifies the price escalation. Also, introducing a luxury housing tax would ensure that the very wealthiest buyers or investors pay an added price, which (like a speculation tax) would raise new funds to make housing more affordable for those on low and modest incomes. Housing affordability is a keen concern for all of us in the City of Vancouver. It will take a concerted effort from all levels of government to ensure we can tackle this problem. While there is no single solution to housing affordability, we’re on the right track towards understanding the multiple factors we will need to TM

Tackling street homelessness will take a multifaceted approach. During my tenure we have expanded the City’s Homeless Outreach Team to be city-wide, providing more services to vulnerable residents and connecting them to housing. We’ve opened new winter low-barrier shelters in neighbourhoods like Downtown South and Mount Pleasant, and we’ve helped more than 1,000 people move from shelters into permanent housing since 2009. For the first time in the City’s history we’ve deployed legal injunctions on landlords of Downtown Eastside single-room occupancy hotels, requiring them to fix and maintain their buildings and protect tenants. We’ve also collaborated with the YWCA to build 21 units of housing designated for low-income women and children as part of a new library in Strathcona, and another 31 units on top of a new community Fire Hall in Champlain Heights. The City also purchased the Ramada Hotels on East Hastings and Kingsway to provide lowincome interim housing to people who moved from shelters and are waiting for permanent housing. We have also offered 20 sites of Cityowned land worth $250 million to senior governments to use for affordable housing. We’re on the right track towards ending homelessness in the city but there is more to do.

What are your views on the latest federal budget? How will it benefit the growth of Vancouver? I’m encouraged the federal budget makes significant commitments to short and long-term investments in housing, transit and social infrastructure. The commitments by the federal government to increase funding for affordable housing and homelessness programs are urgently needed given the number of residents throughout Metro who struggle to access housing. As well, federal funding for upgrading seniors’ housing, co-ops and maintaining affordability will be a big boost for protecting low-income households. The new funding and flexibility dedicated to transit will help us get moving on improving transit in Vancouver and throughout the region, and will both grow our economy while protecting our environment. Benefits of the 2016 federal budget for the City of Vancouver include:

Access Without Fear is a great policy but what sort of challenges would the City be facing with its implementation? t A commitment of at least $370 million as a down payment for transit in Metro Vancouver, t A willingness to fund up to 50 per cent of transit projects, instead of just 1/3rd, t Allowing transit funding to go towards accelerating design and engineering preparations for major projects, like the Broadway Subway, t Increased funding for the Homelessness

Vancouver has become the first city in Western Canada to provide safe access to City services for all residents, regardless of immigration status. The policy will allow vulnerable residents, whether they’re foreign students or workers with expired permits, refugees whose claims were rejected or temporary foreign workers who lost their jobs, to interact with civil servants without being afraid they’ll get reported to the Canada Border Services Agen-

cy, unless required by law. It’s the first step towards getting other civic areas (VPL, VSB, Park Board) to follow similar policies and we’re glad that the Vancouver Police Board has already come on board to follow our lead. As a city our commitment is to ensure a safe city for everyone.

What is your vision of the city five or 10 years from now? For the past three terms I have had the honour of being the Mayor of Vancouver. Together we’ve brought about progressive, positive change. My vision for the city is a place where people of all incomes and backgrounds can afford to live. Vancouver needs to continue to foster a strong, diverse, and resilient economy with good paying jobs and celebrate and recognize the achievements of our intercultural communities. We must demonstrate our environmental leadership by staying on the path to becoming the Greenest City in the world and shifting to 100 per cent renewable energy. I want to ensure that Vancouver remains a vibrant place where people, can live, work, and engage with one another.

To keep your memories alive, there is only one way that is... AAA

mber Kanwar first walked into Business News Network (BNN) six years ago. Starting as an intern bringing coffee to guests and running around the newsroom helping producers, she worked her way up to segment producer, and now as a well-known anchor on BNN and host to the technology show, The Disruptors. BNN’s homegrown product, Kanwar specializes in equity markets and is a master at financial reporting. Enjoying the opportunities and success that have come her way, Kanwar defines her journey as being unexpected and thrilling. “Unexpected because I never thought I had an aptitude for finance; thrilling because I’ve come much farther than I thought I would,” elaborates Kanwar, who left Business School for Journalism School believing she would write about social injustice and inequality when she got out. “But that is a crowded field. There are fewer people in journalism who want to report on finance,” she adds. So how did the talented Kanwar get interested in finance, equity and stock markets – topics which are far from being called interesting? “That’s been the biggest surprise of all,” she exclaims, “I love financial reporting. I get excited when it’s a central bank decision day. I love going through a financial statement trying to find a story.” She points out that the best part about financial reporting is that it’s not all about bad news. “A lot of news reporting focuses on what’s going wrong in the world. But in business you get to look at triumphs and innovation.” Kanwar balances the good and the bad by speaking with people who literally had nothing but an idea and weaved that into a billion dollar business. “It’s contagious to be around that kind of energy.” The young anchor reads a lot to keep herself updated about the market. “I try to listen more than I talk,” she adds. Each morning she spends an hour reading economist notes, equity research, and trader commentary. Throughout the day, she speaks to traders, investors and analysts who can tell her what is happening that day. “Importantly, I get out of the newsroom. I have lunch and dinner with sources. That is where the real insight comes from.

Reading notes gives you an understanding of what’s happening but going out and talking to people gives you the full picture of what is happening and why,” Kanwar says, revealing her work strategies. Viewers love listening to Kanwar’s inputs and findings as she addresses them in simpler terms. “My goal every day is to make sure that even someone who has no financial knowledge understands what I am saying. I am vigilant against jargon. I don’t talk about “solutions” or “synergizing” or “shifting paradigms.” One can see her passion towards technology when Kanwar declares that the tech sector is the most exciting part of business right now. “Canada is experiencing a tech renaissance,” she expresses, “Hundreds of dynamic and innovative companies are popping up across the country. These are Canadian companies that aren’t just national players, but global in dominance. The best part is that it is just beginning.” In fact, it was this renaissance-like feeling that got her pitching the idea of a tech show (The Disruptors) to her boss. “I saw a resurgence in Canada’s tech sector and I wanted to make sure BNN was on the ground floor of it. It was important to be with these companies from scrappy startups to billion dollar titans,” she explains. A few months after pitching it, entrepreneur Bruce Croxon walked in and said he’d like to do a show with BNN. “Our general manager naturally put the two of us together,” quips Kanwar. The Disruptors is about how the world we are living in is changing at a breakneck pace. You can order a taxi, groceries and even your morning coffee all through your smartphone. Soon your fridge and your car will be hooked up to the internet. “Now, more than ever before in history, industries that have done business a certain way for decades will have to instantly adapt or risk extinction. Our show is about making sure the viewer is on top of all these changes,” states Kanwar. Before parting we ask what her motto for success is. “Don’t let your failures define you, let them drive you,” answers Kanwar summing up.

hilpi Somaya Gowda’s debut novel, Secret Daughter, published in 2010 became an international bestseller, selling well over a million copies worldwide in over 30 languages and countries. Her second book, The Golden Son, was an instant #1 bestseller in Canada, and is being published in the U.S. and around the world throughout 2016. “It still surprises me,” says Toronto-born Gowda, who never really considered writing as a career. In 2006, moving to a new city for her husband’s career gave Gowda some space in her life to try something new. Being an avid reader who occasionally wrote as a hobby, she decided to try writing more seriously. “In that year, I took writing classes and began

to write the novel that would become Secret Daughter, and after it was published, it grew into my new career.” Compulsively readable and deeply touching, Secret Daughter is a story of the unforeseen ways in which our choices and families affect our lives, and the indelible power of love in all its many forms. In college, Gowda spent a summer as a volunteer in Child Haven International orphanage in Hyderabad, India, which seeded the idea for Secret Daughter. “It was a life-changing experience. I formed connections to those children that stayed with me for many years after I left,” she recalls. The Golden Son – her novel about a young TM

man at the crossroads of life – involved a lot of fieldwork. Gowda did a great deal of research to understand the medical profession and the trials of a young intern – not only the medical parts, but how hospital politics work, and the impact of the experience on individuals. “I read several books, both fictionalized accounts and memoirs, about the residency experience; interviewed many doctors, starting with my personal network and expanding outward to specific specialties I needed to understand; and spent time inside the cardiology department and catheterization lab at UC San Diego Hospital,” adds Gowda, who also traveled to her husband’s family’s village in South India. There she was fortunate to learn about the agricultural practices, natural and ayurvedic medical remedies, and

Elements of family and relationships are strongly present in both novels. Gowda agrees, “I am repeatedly drawn to stories of families and relationships because they form the fabric of all of our lives. But added to this backdrop is the richness of the individual, how we all have our own temperaments and ambitions for our lives. It’s a very rich terrain with endless layers for storytelling.” Secret Daughter has been honoured as New York Times bestseller, whereas The Golden Son hit #1 on the Canadian Fiction bestseller list in both of Canada’s national newspapers, The Globe & Mail and Toronto Star. Both novels have also been optioned for screen rights by two different production companies. Talking about the response she has received, Gowda says she loves hearing from people in completely different countries and cultures who see some universal truth in the story or identify with characters who are seemingly so different. “This is the greatest role literature can play, I believe, to help us realize how much we share in common, over time and around the world. It’s the reason I have always loved to read fiction, and I can only hope my writing continues to do that for other people,” she says, revealing that the next novel is simmering in her mind. Before parting, she gives some advice for young writers. “The best advice I’ve heard is “ABCD” – Apply Bottom to Chair Daily. Writing, especially a novel, is like running a marathon except you don’t know how many miles the race will be when you begin. It’s easy to get daunted by the scale of a project, or lost within the maze of it. The best remedy is simply to sit down every day and keep writing, keep rewriting, keep editing and revising.” She also recommends reading, as much as you can, preferably writers who are better than you. “Reading something truly wonderful is the best inspiration to keep going with your own work, and make it the best you possibly can.”

lthough India’s struggle with equipping itself with proper sanitation facilities has been in existence for decades, it was only until recently that the dilapidating issue received its deserved attention. While speaking at Impact Conclave 2016, Vandana Mehra, regional communication specialist at World Bank India, stated that presently India is lagging 32 years behind in attaining its san-

Over 60 percent of the population defecates in the open. The number is alarming,” Mehra said. The issue has inflated to conceive active running campaigns such as No Toilet, No Bride

which urges females to refuse marriage proposals unless the male’s household accommodates an indoor toilet. The appalling facts were enough to motivate Girish Agrawal, a chartered accountant in Calgary, to dedicate his summit at Mt. Kilimanjaro towards building toilets in India. “The school doesn’t have a toilet system. What happens with girls when they get into teenage life [is that] they need the facility even more. [So] either they face sexual harassment or their parents stop sending them to school. So just because of not having toilets, girls are unable to continue with their education.” Without any experience of mountain climbing, on February 29, 2016, Agrawal scaled the highest peak in Africa and raised awareness about the issue in a region where the subject was either alien or perceived with minimal attention. Therefore, for Agrawal to pledge to raise $250,000 CAD was just as daring as completing the summit itself. However, with the tremendous support from individuals in Canada and India, Agrawal has managed to raise almost $175,000. What led Agrawal to pursue Summit for Dignity were unfortunate events in his personal life. Following his father’s demise in 2003, Agrawal lost his two sons to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Agrawal explains, “In 2005 we had our baby who passed away after 10 days, in 2006 we had our second baby who passed away after eight months. Then my wife went through depression in 2007 because of the losses. In 2008, the financial market plummeted, so my life was giving me so many

challenges that if I could survive those challenges, [then] that itself was more than victory.” Talking about his experience at Mt. Kilimanjaro, the brave hearted says it has impacted him in two ways. First and foremost, the summit’s association with the cause has brought Agrawal gratification in utilizing his abilities for the wellbeing of others. Second, the climb, which is known for its spiritual trait, left an enlightening effect on Agrawal. “I am definitely going to share my realizations with my clients and do my best to spread happiness which has been my real goal for life.” The mountaineer’s target of $250,000 will provide efficient toilet systems in 100 schools throughout India. This brings down the cost of a single toilet system to fall between $2500-$3000 CAD. And to make the most out of this initiative, Agrawal has partnered himself with the Aga Khan Foundation, that is already running a $35 million project in India with the aim of providing toilets for 700,000 individuals including schools. If this is a cause that you could like to support, please make a donation towards Girish Agrawal’s initiative via the Aga Khan Foundation.

orgeous, mesmerizing, ethereal – one can fall short of words when describing Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Just one look by her can make men fall head over heels in love and women turn green with envy. She is afterall one of the most beautiful women on earth. What adds to her beauty is her genuineness and never-giving-up attitude. Her husband, actor Abhishek Bachchan, describes her love to be unconditional, co-workers call her the director’s actress, fans call her goddess – Aishwarya is a perfect balance of beauty, charm and determination. In the midst of promoting her film Sarbjit, preparing for Cannes Film Festival,

and managing her personal life, the Queen of Hearts took some time off for DARPAN to answer a few questions on the film, her work, and personal life. Based on a true story, Aishwarya’a latest film Sarbjit revolves around a sister’s struggle for 23 years trying to secure her brother’s release from imprisonment. Ash, as she is fondly called, plays the role of Dalbir Kaur – sister of Sarabjit Singh (played by Randeep Hooda), an Indian farmer wrongly convicted of spying and terrorism by the Pakistan government and sentenced to death. It was destiny that got Aishwarya and the film together. The actress shares that

she knew about Dalbir’s struggle years before the film was offered to her. “A few years back a petition [seeking release for Sarabjit] was going around to some of us who belonged to the public platform, the vast film industry. The letter had come to me to sign on the petition to release Sarabjit, probably Dalbirji was trying possible ways to bring attention to work at his release.” So when director Omung Kumar approached her to be part of the film, Aishwarya felt it was some kind of a divine calling. She immediately said yes. “It was already a yes because somehow I feel his life and mine kind off had crossed paths. It was unfortunate that he did come back to India in a coffin, I had to pay my ode and respect so I had to come in,” explains the blue-eyed beauty, who breathed life into

How can we walk away from telling a human story like this?” questions the former Miss World, when asked about her decision to accept the film without even reading the entire script. “Just an incident can completely change the dynamics of a family, change a family’s lives! It was important to be part of the narrative and share it with the audience as Indians.” Playing Dalbir Kaur was a difficult and challenging role – one that Aishwarya has

A lot of preparation and referencing was involved so that the character was similar to the real life person. “We (Dalbir and I) don’t look the same but Omung Kumar was clear that he wanted me to do the role. We had Dalbirji on board for referencing of her role, and we had media which had documented things about her... So we took that to gauge mannerisms. Dalbirji has a mole and we have kept that,” says Aishwarya, adding that she did not spend time with the actual Dalbir Kaur before shooting for the film. Yet the international icon

She relied on the vision director Kumar had for the character. “When I am playing real life characters, it is important for me to stay true to the director’s vision and narrative. I have not sat and watched everything of hers (Dalbir Kaur) but I have stayed true. Omung told me lets create a character together where by the end of it I come out experiencing, feeling, believing Dalbirji’s story and that’s what was important,” says the 2009 Padma Shri Award-winner. Besides her own effort, Aishwarya also gives credit to the hardwork of the teams that were involved in making the character come alive on screen. “As actors, we wait for opportunities to essay a character in its entirety. many different roles gracefully. We ask her which role has made a huge impact in her life and right away comes her answer, “Motherhood has, by far, been just the most superlative experience of unconditional love I have ever experienced. I consider it an immense blessing. It has been a very, very natural role for me to embrace and I am loving every millisecond of it.” Being a mother to four-year-old Aaradhya is Aishwarya’s top-most priority. Yet she has managed to create a balance between personal life and work. What is this star mom’s secret? “I respect the integrity of commitment. I am a very committed mother. When I felt the time was right to venture out to figure out the balance, I did so. I am still figuring it out. I think in a mother’s life every day is a first whether the baby is one-year-old or five-year-old…as you have not been a mother before. Every day you keep discovering. Fortunately, I think, it has all fallen into place,” expresses Ash. Her family’s support has further helped her enjoy motherhood. “Being a mother is a full time job on its own. To be able to juggle more than one thing at a time takes a lot of planning and family support. I have a wonderful family including my in-laws that are involved in Aaradhya’s life. I love them all dearly, truly they complete me,” professes Aishwarya. Before parting she imparts some advice to new and to-be moms. “Enjoy your motherhood years no matter how consuming it might be. You must always remember that having a child is a blessing. Plan well and give everything its sweet time.” Indeed, Aishwarya is the epitome of success and class. She continues to reign the Indian and international entertainment market with her beauty, elegance and sincerity. ancouver has recently been listed as North America’s most unaffordable housing market and third least-affordable in the world. Good news if you’re selling your home but bad news for most home buyers who are struggling to find a house that suits their needs while staying within their budget. A quick search online for housing prices in Vancouver and you’ll find soars, surge and spikes commonly follow. Housing prices have been on the rise in the city for over a decade and yet it’s still the talk of the town. “Vancouver is an attractive city with a growing economy and as the population grows there is a continued demand for housing, both rental and ownership,” explains Mukhtar Latif, the City of Vancouver’s Chief Housing Officer. “We’ve got very strong job and economic growth in the province, we’ve got more people moving here than we have houses to put them in, and low interest rates,” says president of

the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, Dan Morrison. “Vancouver has done an amazing job at inviting the world to come check us out, and guess what? They all showed up!” In addition to the obvious amenities that make the area attractive, “many things have been contributing to the lack of supply in the Vancouver region,” says Ross Leathley, sales associate with Rennie and Associates Realty. “One of the most obvious is the geography of the region and restrictive zoning within our municipalities. Large swaths of Residential Single-Family Zoning restrict much of

the most desirable land from allowing other housing forms, such as: row-homes, town-homes, duplexes, and other multi-family residences. While many municipalities are allowing condo towers at major intersections and transit routes, these are not desirable for families, anyone who wants an interest in land or simply doesn’t want to live on a major thoroughfare.” Leathley also says delays in the permit process for builders along with the high cost of building are contributing to the lack of supply. “The current level of demand we are seeing in the market is also compounded in many ways;

severe lack of inventory in affordable areas and housing forms, low Canadian dollar for foreign investors, historically low interest rates, desirability of ownership in the region, high rental costs, and a high level of equity in the properties of homeowners,” he says. Rising prices are encouraging sellers to put their homes on the market in hopes of making money on their investment but the increase isn’t enough to keep up with demand. Young home buyers are being stretched thin financially and likely won’t be able to afford a free-standing family home in the location of their choice.

Dan Morrison, president, Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver

It’s a common complaint among potential buyers who are finding the constant talk of unaffordable real estate to be depressing instead of enjoying the thrill of buying a home. Homeowners lucky enough to have laid down roots in the last several years are watching their neighbours sell their homes for hundreds of thousands more than their purchase price just a short year ago. For those with average incomes, average prices are out of reach. With a single-family de-

tached home in Vancouver selling for an average of $1.3 million and housing prices across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland up approximately 26 percent from last year, even highly-skilled, in-demand employees aren’t seeing income increases at a rate anywhere comparable. “Many cities across the world are experiencing price growth faster than income growth. This means it is increasingly difficult for people to get onto the housing ladder,” explains Latif. “Many workers who are building up their careers, first time buyers and families who need to move into more appropriately sized housing are having to leave the city to purchase a home.” “This is not a sustainable model for a number of reasons,” he says. “In terms of the environment as they have to commute back into the city for work, quality of life and healthy city objectives on time taken to commute and impact on air quality as well as losing vibrancy in the city of young people and families making use of the many facilities such as schools, parks, community centres, and libraries that the city has invested in.”

Tips for First Time Buyers Just because it’s a seller’s market, doesn’t mean buyers can’t have success. Find your first home sweet home by staying organized, being smart and standing out.

Organize your finances

A recent survey conducted by Demographia found

“In the current market, having pre-approval is an absolute must. Many parts of Greater Vancouver are seeing multiple offers and very quick sales. Before starting your home search you must have a clear idea of your financial situation,” Leathley advises.

11 times more than the average household income.

the average home in Vancouver costs nearly

Know what you want and be ready to act on it Leathley says, “You must be ready to make an offer when you see something you like. If you see a new listing that could be the right fit, call for a viewing right away; this way you can organize your home inspector, go over any documents, ask about the offer date/time, and generally complete your due diligence on the home. Waiting until the weekend open house may not leave much time for any of this; completing an inspection of the property with a licensed inspector is one of the most important things you can do before a purchase, especially when subject free. I even recommend completing an inspection on a new home; you can include these items in a deficiency report or at least have any significant issues completed before occupancy.”

Don’t be afraid to stand out “Other than the highest price, sellers do consider other things in your offer that could make yours the winning bid. Find out the best closing dates for the seller, attach a bank draft for your deposit and have a signed Property Disclosure Statement and Title included in the offer,” says Leathley. “I also recommend attaching a letter explaining your personal situation or plans for the property. This may not always work, but a few sentences on who you are and why you want to buy the home doesn’t hurt.”

What are home buyers supposed to do when house prices continue to rise out of reach?

A recent survey conducted by Demographia found the average home in Vancouver costs nearly 11 times more than the average household income. What are home buyers supposed to do when house prices continue to rise out of reach? “First time home buyers have to change their expectations,” says Morrison. “It might be a condo instead of a townhouse or a townhouse instead of a house; it might mean moving further out from the downtown core. It’s just changing your expectations because it’s a changing city.” Sacrificing space or the dreams of a detached home allow owners to stay in the neighbourhoods they love. What used to be a starter home is now the norm for a forever home. “The length of time this market has gone up is a little longer than average if you look at even the last ten years of trends,” says Morrison. “At the same time, interest rates

aren’t changing, our economy is doing very well, more people are moving here and we can only build the houses so fast. We just don’t see any major things on the horizon that make us say, this is going to change everything overnight. We don’t see a bubble

To increase supply, we are working with local communities to increase densities to enable new housing to be built,” says Latif, referencing a record number of planning applications in the West End. A project by Tien Sher Homes due to pop up soon in Surrey boasts everything from micro-suites to two bedrooms with a den all for under $300,000. The new condo building, Venue, will be close to the SkyTrain and offers affordable city living without sacrificing equity and ownership. That’s welcome news for the younger generations looking for their first home purchase and older generations hoping for a manageable space. Projects with such a price point are sure to garner attention in today’s tough market. Buyers are changing their expectations along with their buying strategies. For those

struggling to get into the market, combing forces with friends so both parties can afford to buy is the newest trend. “Homeownership is a choice and as a city we want to retain a diverse population including families and workers who want to commit to living in the city,” says Latif. “By providing a range of affordable housing options from rental to ownership is a way to keep the diversity and vibrancy in the city.” In an effort to make it easier for first time home buyers to enter the market, Vancouver’s city council recently approved an Affordable Home Ownership pilot project – the first of its kind in Vancouver. The city aims to work with developers to acquire 300 units over the next three years that would be made available to those earning between $50,000 and $99,000 among other qualifying factors. High prices have been the norm in Vancouver for years now and it’s not likely to change any time soon. When your earnings go further the farther you move away, staying in Vancouver is a tough decision despite all the city has to offer. Vancouver may consistently be named one of the most liveable cities but as long as it’s one of the most unaffordable, it might not be the city to live in if you’re hoping to find a home to call your own.

I don’t have to prove to anyone anymore

R icha Chadha I By Shweta Kulkarni

n a relatively short span of time, the Gangs Of Wasseypur firebrand – Richa Chadha has carved a niche for herself as a powerhouse performer, who effortlessly walks from one diverse role to the other. What really sets her apart from other Bollywood Belles is the fact that the gutsy actor never shies away from playing any roles, rather she does what any brilliant actor is expected to do – she gets into the skin of her characters and delivers one memorable performance after the other. Then be it playing an aging mother to two kids in Gangs Of Wasseypur or moving sensuously to the song ‘Paani Paani’ in her latest film Cabaret, as an actor, the go-getting girl never fails to impress. What’s more, she is not only making heads turn in India, but Richa is leaving her mark on the international shores as well. From representing the Indian cinema at the Cannes Film Festival to sharing a panel with Hollywood filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola at the 15th Marrakech Film Festival, the Delhi girl has definitely come a long way.

More than a risk taker, I would say I follow my instincts. I follow my heart. And so far most of the decisions that I have made on the basis of my instincts have worked in my favour. So I am not complaining.”

DARPAN catch’s up with the down-to-earth Richa to talk about films and more. Excerpts from the interview:

From playing a small but an impactful part in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! to playing a lead role in Cabaret, how would you define your journey in Bollywood? It’s been a fantastic journey so far. I have been lucky to get good films and films that were released. Good work was offered to me and I am glad that I could do justice to it. Thankfully, I don’t have to prove to anyone anymore that I am a good actor. People take that of me now. But at the same time, it also puts a lot of pressure on me in terms of expectation. So I am working harder.

While most young actresses would prefer to tread on the customary path, you have always chosen the unconventional route. Any particular reason why? It is the stuff that I chose and the stuff that chooses me. As I said, I have been very lucky in terms of

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 6 Re f l e c t i n g T h e S o u t h - A s i a n L i f e s t y l e

the kind of work that has been offered to me. I think any thinking actor would realize what potential these roles had. And for me what really matters is good content. It is nothing about conventional or unconventional, there can be either good films or bad films and I am glad to have done some good work. There is credibility to my name and respect. If someone calls me today, I know they are calling me because they respect my work and nothing else. I am open to any kind of films that I will enjoy doing as well as watching myself in.

You are quite a risk taker, aren’t you? More than a risk taker, I would say I follow my instincts. I follow my

heart. And so far most of the decisions that I have made on the basis of my instincts have worked in my favour. So I am not complaining.

Your latest film, Sarbjit is definitely adding to your impressive filmography, tell us something about it. It’s a great story, a story that needed to be told. It speaks about a sister’s struggle to get justice for her brother. This biopic has three primary characters. Sarabjit (played by Randeep Hooda), Dalbir Kaur (Sarabjit’s sister played by Aishwarya) and Sukhpreet (Sarabjit’s wife). I am playing Sukhpreet. I am glad I got to be a part of it. It’s a superb character, good cast, good production value, and a very nice director to work with. So I am very happy that I could be part of it. I met Sarabjit’s wife,

DARPAN EXCLUSIVE Sukhpreet Kaur, soon after we started filming. I didn’t ask her too many intrusive questions because I didn’t think it was right. When she met me, she started crying, so I did not want to upset her any more.

And how would you define your equation with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan? Great! Working with Aishwarya was pretty amazing. She is really sweet, kind and compassionate. I loved working with her. She helped me a lot with my character. It was great working with such a dignified woman.

Sarbjit is followed by another unique film – Cabaret. In fact, the film’s producer Pooja Bhatt is calling you the ‘hero’ of the film… That is really sweet of her. I am glad that she offered me the role, as I always wanted to be a part of a film where there would be dancing. Basically, the character I play in the film is very powerful; it is a story of a survivor. Cabaret is my first proper commercial film.

What kind of preparations did you do to play a dancer in the film? I didn’t necessarily have to play a dancer. It was more like a performer, singer and dancer. But yes, it did involve a good amount of dancing. I worked a bit with the choreographer, went back to dancing and had loads of fun. I learned lyrical jazz, trained in other dance forms like Ballet and contemporary. I always wanted to learn all these dance forms and this film gave me an opportunity to do so.

One thing remarkable about you is the fact that, despite all the fame, success, and adulation, you are still the same humble, down-to-earth girl who always replies to a text or a call. How have you managed to keep your head on your shoulders in an industry where people change overnight? Because I can’t change and I don’t want to change. I want to be normal and grounded. Yes, it is tough but then again I have genuine friends and family who help me keep grounded. If people, who you are related to, don’t change or get too affected by your achievements, it’s not that difficult to retain your sanity. Also, I still have a long way to go, I have just started and if I let these small successes get into my head, I won’t be able to do anything more in life.

So what do you want to do now? What is your dream? I just want to get better and work hard. I want to continue doing good films and get better with each one.

Vegetarians have a reason to swoon! Meet on Main offers diverse, creative vegetarian comfort food that ranges from healthy salads to decadent burgers. Some of it is what you’d expect from a vegetarian restaurant, while other dishes take decadence to a whole new level – we have a burger topped with Mac n’ Cheez! rom a very young age, children are exposed to the world’s most celebrated and influential leaders, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela to name a few, thus developing a somewhat narrow-minded ideology of what it means to be a leader. As children progress through their schooling, they continue to see that these leaders, both in the past and present, have improved society or lead events in history which are life-changing, and so have been acknowledged by the entire world. This cultivates a child’s mind and brings them to believe that leaders are meant to be followed, and are people to be inspired by. Yet, the idea that they themselves can become a leader if they choose to is never considered a realistic option. Throughout my childhood, I too had the same thinking. Throughout elementary school, I was a very shy child, and one who became very inspired by heroes

who made positive changes in the world. I was unaware that any ordinary person could do the same. On entering high school, a much larger and opportunityrich place, I realized that there are indefinite numbers of ways in which anyone who wishes to become involved or lead an idea, initiative or movement, can achieve their goal. I was suddenly surrounded by students who were leading their own school clubs, ranging from hobby-based ones such as Robotics Club to those which were raising thousands of dollars to donate to a number of charities. Each one of these students was a leader in their own way, and was showing care and initiative towards what he/she strongly believed in. This realization introduced me to a brand new idea of leadership which has helped me progress into becoming a youth leader

myself: a leader is someone who has utmost passion, drive, and most importantly, belief in an idea which they want to spread to those around them. In high school, students are required to complete a certain number of service hours in the school or the community in order to graduate. This is the main driving force for many of the students involved with clubs and charities. Though not a negative thing, it causes some confusion amongst students on where they should be investing their time, and why they are doing what they are doing. I strongly believe a sense of direction and a genuine interest in the cause is what creates a leader. For the first couple of years, this sense of purpose was not clear to me either, as there were so many opportunities to choose from, but not enough time to fully commit to and pursue them all. However, it soon became clear that becoming a leader is a potential quality every single person has within them. All it needs is some focus and a genuine desire to spread the ideas to others. A leader does not need to make himself or herself visible to the entire world; if the cause is humble, and the power to believe is indefinite, the world itself recognizes the work of a true leader.

abindranath Tagore, the Noble laureate of India, spoke rightly when he said, “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.” Barefoot College shares the same spirit by employing traditional knowledge to equip individuals and their communities with solar energy, water, education, and professional wellbeing, and how Barefoot does this is truly marvellous. Inside a classroom you would find women aged 35-50 from various nationalities using

just their hands and fingers – no translation, no interpreters, no written language – to configure, test and operate complex structures for setting up solar panels. Using this approach, the college has passed out 750 women solar engineers from 78 countries. It started in 1965 when Sanjit (Bunker) Roy set out to volunteer in India’s eastern state of Bihar which was hit by one of the severest famines in India’s history. Roy describes his education as “snobbish and elitist”, indicating that what he saw in Bihar during that awful time changed his life. Shortly after completing his university degree, Roy dedicated five years working as an unskilled labourer deepening and blasting open wells for water. “That meant going down a 100 ft open well by rope and blasting it with explosives. I lived with very poor and ordinary people under the stars and heard the simple stories they had to tell of their skills and knowledge and wisdom that books and lectures and university education can never teach you. My real education started then when I saw amazing people – water diviners, traditional bonesetters, midwives – at work. That was the humble beginning of the Barefoot College,” elaborates Roy. Understanding the core structure and functioning of Barefoot College is fascinating. You will find educators without any formal degree, certification or qualification

Upon graduating, ‘Solar Mamas’ as they are called, impregnate these skills towards equipping their communities with solar power. Not only that, these solar engineers return home with a bursting verve to synergize their knowledge and confidence with women in other nomadic communities within their region. Roy stresses on admitting only females from illiterate background within the mentioned age group. Why? Because unlike men who have a tendency of leaving their community to look for work in urban spaces after acquiring the skillset, older women will stick to their communities, and are more mature and patient. Because they are older, their views and opinions are respectfully heard. And with training an illiterate woman to become a solar engineer, Roy hopes on transcending a very strong message that even the poor and illiterate or rather individuals lacking a formal skillset, can create an empowering ripple effect on rural grounds. “The best woman solar engineer the Barefoot College has trained is a 55-year-old grandmother from Afghanistan who is looking after 200 houses she solar electrified in September 2005. Barefoot College’s model of education is simple and result-oriented; it does not adhere to an obligatory reliance on technology or heavy financial backing to move forward, which is probably why traditional knowledge does not resonate in national policy making. Urban solutions are geared towards addressing rural issues and in most cases, these policy makers/bureaucrats have never visited a village or noted their issues first hand. The dangerous outcome of such policies is the increasing trend of forced rural to urban migration. With its hands-on approach Barefoot College’s vision has been able to reverse this trend in many African countries. “The global community believes solar empowerment is possible through “Centralised” top down approaches and methods where the communities get dependent on outside paper qualified engineers to carry out the repair and maintenance through Annual Maintenance Contracts. This has proved a global failure but the experts have not learnt any lessons. The World Bank view is [that] the Business Model is the answer. This approach may have benefitted the entrepreneurs and commercial for-profit organisations pushing massive solar power plants but the rural communities have only suffered. They have had to buy inexpensive solar lights that do not last long and are unrepairable,” Roy adds. In the words of Roy, the answer to global solar empowerment is a bottom up Gandhian Partnership Model where everyone – the government, the private sector, community-based organization and the rural communities – are accepted and treated as equal partners. Barefoot College’s main campus is situated in Tilonia, Rajasthan. However, six branches of Barefoot Vocational Training Centres are soon to be established in Africa; each centre funded by the Government of India at a cost of USD $400,000 each. In 2015 a centre in Zanzibar was inaugurated in collaboration with the Government of Zanzibar. By 2018, Barefoot College aims to reach an additional 150,000 people by tripling its model for solar electrification that is owned and managed by the community itself. Furthermore, Barefoot’s three-year strategic plan will triple the training of women solar engineers and bring light to an additional 120,000 households in 100 communities across Africa. The ambitious plan involves training a further 480 women to become Barefoot Solar Engineers by 2018. To support Barefoot College, visit their website or plan a visit to Tilonia!

The sperm will live in the body for approximately three days but the egg only lives for 24-48 hours, so it is important to have intercourse before you ovulate rather than after.

Most treatments used to help a couple conceive are fairly simple and involve minimal or no expense. Often, simple medications or just counselling can help solve the problem. In some cases, the solution requires more advanced technology such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF) which are not covered by the Medical Services Plan. Fortunately, most couples are able to resolve their fertility issues and have the baby they are hoping for.

A HEALTHY

SUMMER FOR KiDS By Shanel Khaliq

As the summer approaches, parents will face an added dilemma of how to help their children maintain a balanced diet while keeping them hydrated and healthy.

abits acquired during childhood are hard to get rid of in adulthood. This rings true especially when it comes to eating habits. As the summer approaches, pop and other sugary beverages will increase in sales. Parents will face an added dilemma of how to help their children maintain a balanced diet while keeping them hydrated and healthy. So how do parents manage their kid’s diet during the hot months? “As parents we need to keep the junky foods out of our homes as much as possible and make good healthy foods available to our children. When kids get on a whole foods diet (and engage in activity), their weight will naturally balance. Focusing on healthy foods is not only effective, but empowering and beneficial on far more

levels than weight management alone,” says Julia O’Loughlin, a registered holistic nutritionist at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Donna Whitham, a Registered Dietitian at Fraser Health Public Health suggests offering kids ice cold fruit during snack time. “Cut-up fruit into long finger like sizes and freeze. Fruits that freeze well are watermelon, cantaloupe, mango and grapes. Homemade or bought all-fruit or fruit and yogurt popsicles can be a satisfying treat too. Include some

protein to round out the meal such as cheese or Greek yogurt.” Kids will want to drink sodas and cold drinks to quench their thirst in summer. Yet parents must limit the drinks their child consumes as much as possible. Whitham says that even fruit juices must not be heavily relied upon even if it is pure. “Half a cup (125 ml) of unsweetened fruit juice is included in Canada’s Food Guide as one fruit choice, but when I talk to parents I recommend limiting fruit juice to special occasions. When a parent chooses to offer juice, it is best to give it with a meal or snack. Limit the quantity to just the ½ cup or less and only in an open cup while sitting,” advices Whitham, warning that unsweetened 100 per cent fruit juice too can become a problem beverage. She adds, “Diluting with water is not a better option either. This practice may lead to tooth decay, as it allows sugar to wash through the mouth all day long. It also interferes with a child’s appetite.” So what’s the best beverage a parent can offer thirsty children during a hot summer day? “Water! That is all that is needed between meals and snacks,” asserts Whitham. Loughlin says that one of the most effective approaches is to get the children involved in the food preparation process, and if at all possible, the growing process. She has noticed that children are keen about learning what their food is made of. Being creative about cooking is another. “If you find a healthy food that your child likes, one approach to improving overall nutrition is to increase the nutritional value of that food by adding extra vegetables. For example, if your child likes

TM

hummus, you could add some kale into it and blend as usual. The flavour won’t change, but the nutritional content will be greatly increased.” Additionally, she shares that cookies and other treats, if cooked at home, could have less harmful ingredients. “The sugar could be reduced and replaced with something lower glycemic, such as coconut sugar and the flour could be made into a 50/50 ratio of whole grain to refined.” Like every other healthy habit, parents also have to teach eating healthy by example. If a child sees his or her parents eating a wide range of foods, but always forcing vegetables in their meals, chances are the child will not understand the values and benefits of eating them. Teaching your kids some good eating habits from the beginning can ensure a healthy future. Whitham feels that a mistake most parents make is that they wait too long to introduce their children to healthy fruits and vegetables. As soon as a child is introduced to solid foods, roughly at around six months, parents should try to introduce fruits and vegetables too. Research suggests that this familiarity will carry forward and they are likely to accept eating these foods by the time they become toddlers. She further adds, “Letting the child be in control of how much they eat, what they eat and whether they eat, develops their ability to read their body signals better and to grow into healthy eaters. Long term eating problems, such as food sneaking and hoarding, and other disordered eating behaviours, can also occur when children are restricted to only ‘healthy foods’ and are not given enough food to support their appetite.” Lastly, Loughlin feels that instead of always talking about obesity that results in body image issues that creates other enormous and long-lasting problems, why not talk about eating healthier. “I think the best thing we can do as a society and as parents is to simply educate children about the power of healthy food and make it more available to them,” she sums up.

Reveal Regular exfoliation is important to boost facial cell turnover cycle.

verybody needs to exfoliate, especially as we transition into summer when faces can get clogged with sunscreen, makeup and sweat. If you are worried about irritative skin or if you have particularly reactive skin, don’t worry, there are so many different formulations in the market now that as long as you follow directions (i.e. don’t use too much pressure or use too often), your skin will be glowing with happiness.

You regularly need to exfoliate to boost the natural cell turnover cycle. Without any help, old cells like to linger on the surface, physically blocking young, fresh cells from showing. As they

accumulate, they become grey, flaky and dull – sounds familiar? Exfoliation removes this layer and the results are immediate: skin is noticeably softer, complexion is brighter, and serums/lotions are absorbed much faster. There are two main types of exfoliators: manual and chemical. Manual exfoliation involves beads of some form to physically “scrub” away the surface cells. On this note, please stay away from products that contain microbeads, which are harmful to the ecosystem and are in the process of being banned in Canada. Chemical exfoliation involves an acid (alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy) or enzyme and these are treatments that “eat” away at the surface cells. If you’re starting from zero, try

incorporating one into your routine once a week and increase slowly to two to three times a week as your skin adapts.

Manual Exfoliators Dr. Roebuck's Polish ($39.95, Shoppers Drug Mart) is in a creamy base with jojoba beads that are on the larger side, making this a gentle one to start off with if you’ve never exfoliated before or have reactive skin. ZO Skin Health’s Offects Exfoliating Polish ($84, Touch of Joy) is extremely concentrated and uses magnesium crystals – use a light

touch here. I love this one at the end of the day when I’m feeling especially grimy or sweaty. Éminence’s Strawberry & Rhubarb Dermafoliant ($48) smells delicious and is a powder housed in a vintagefeeling metal canister. Sprinkle into your palm, add water to make a paste and massage onto the face. This contains rice powder and thermal mud, so it’s also extremely absorbent – great for oily skin. I also use this thinned out as a cleanser/toner whenever I need just a quick, light freshening up. REN’s Rosa Centifolia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser ($36, Kiss and Makeup) is a dual-phase cleanser. As you massage this onto your face, jojoba wax beads eventually melt, turning into an oil-based cleanser. This is a lovely one for those with reactive skins. For a treat, Själ's Pearl Enzyme Exfoliating Mask ($198, Kiss and Makeup) is triple-packed with fruit acids, enzymes and real crushed pearls. Gently massage this onto your face, then leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

Chemical Exfoliators In addition to soughing away dead skin cells, chemical exfoliators can also improve light scarring and lighten hyperpigmentation. Because they’re active on a deeper layer, your skin will become photosensitive while using these products so always wear a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 every day. For a great, no-nonsense exfoliator, NeoStrata’s Glycolic Renewal Smoothing Lotion ($39, London Drugs) is a fast-absorbing, encapsulated glycolic lotion that’s available at 5 per cent and 10 per cent strengths, so you can start gently and build up tolerance.

Chemical exfoliators can also improve light scarring and lighten hyperpigmentation. Because they’re active on a deeper layer, your skin will become photosensitive while using these products so always wear a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 every day. SkinCeuticals’ Retexturing Activator ($87) is a resurfacing serum that has light moisturizing properties so it does help protect the moisture barrier. Those with oily skin may not need to follow up with a separate moisturizer. It’s meant to be used sparingly; start with 4-5 drops, any more and it’ll get sticky. Bliss’s that’s incredi-‘peel’! ($59, Sephora) are individual sachets of pre-saturated wipes. They’re loaded with product so after you wipe over your face, there’s plenty left to treat your neck, chest, hands, elbows, knees, etc. I always have a couple of these packets in my travel kit. Small-batch, luxury brand Arcona’s Gentle Solution ($73.12, Nordstrom) is a glycolic and lactic acid-based product packed full of natural ingredients like algae, amino acids and chlorophyll to help congested skin transform into glowing skin. This is another gentle one for reactive skin. It’s a great stand-alone product but it’s recommended to follow up in the mornings with the Cranberry Gommage exfoliant ($63.46) to thoroughly remove surface cells. La Prairie’s Cellular 3-Minute Peel ($310, Nordstrom) truly does work in a mere three minutes. I love this in the morning when I wake up feeling sluggish. I apply this luscious masque while getting ready and before my tea is made, I’m ready to rinse. I’m rewarded with a face that feels lighter, brighter and tighter. I save this one as a personal “secret weapon” for days I really want to look perky. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

unscreens are a billion-dollar industry that have staged their dominance in the health and beauty industry. Health experts and media have played their part in promoting its significance but we as consumers must complete our share of compulsory research, and this would be true for any product we purchase on a day to day basis – do your research, check the ingredients. Skin is the largest organ of the human body therefore regular application of sunscreen, if purchased without any background check, can potentially do more harm than good to the body.

Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit, non-partisan organization designed to scrutinize products and companies and release reports, online databases, apps and campaigns to educate and empower consumers, publishes annual data on sunscreens. Dr. Cobi Slater, doctor of Natural Medicine based in BC quotes the EWG saying, “In 2014, the Environmental Working Group published their guide to safe sunscreens. In the process, they reviewed over 2,000 sunscreens currently on the market including over 257 different brands. The EWG concluded from TM

their study that over 75% of the sunscreens contained toxic and carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals.” Additionally, worldwide statistics suggest that incidence of skin cancer in on the rise globally, adds Dr. Slater. Radiation can cause serious harm to skin. Collagen and elastin are proteins constituting the crucial matrix of healthy skin, which under exposure of ultraviolet (UV) rays can be damaged. Radiation can also damage our DNA resulting in mutation of cell growth, consequently leading to abnormal cell growth and cancer. Sunscreens come in as one of the important factors defending our skin from serious dangers, but to take them as the last word can be problematic. Sunscreens are categorized to provide protection via mineral and chemical filters. Mineral sunscreens typically employ zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier, whereas chemical sunscreens come with ingredients that include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. oxybenzone, found in nearly all chemical sunscreens has raised a red flag amongst research groups, including the EWG, which warns against using oxybenzone on children or pregnant/breastfeeding women. A recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (based in United States) found oxybenzone in 96 per cent of the US population. “Based on these statistics, it is no wonder that savvy consumers are seeking alternatives to conventional sunscreens. This trend will continue as more research reveals the increasingly harmful effects of toxic sunscreens,” Dr. Slater responds. Moving on to mineral sunscreens, these are made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and perform significantly better than their counterpart. They do not breakdown in sunlight, are not usually absorbed (and therefore do not disrupt the body’s hormones), are not allergenic, and are more effective at blocking UVA rays than nonminerals. “These sunscreens are a good choice for children and according to the EWG, they have the best safety profiles of the choices in North America,” Dr. Slater claims. Some great options for safe natural mineral sunscreens include Alba Botanical, Badger, Babyganics, JASON and Naked Turtle. The debate does not intend to rule out the usage of sunscreens altogether; they have a role, but they do not make you invincible against the harmful UVA and UVB rays, therefore it is advisable not to rely on sunscreens completely.

FLASHBACK …take a time machine this summertime!

BY JOSEPH A. FEDERICO

T

Pictures for representation only

here is a new feeling in the air; it is not the stale, chilly feeling of a lazy winter, but a fresh start. Spring is almost over, and well, summer is around the corner. Think Will Smith’s “Summertime” hit blaring on the boom box. Feel sexy, feel free, like the world once did in the 1980s and 1990s. Because, well, that is what is on its way in the world of fashion. You feel, yo? Let’s go! Ladies will start us off on this venture down memory lane. The ’90s are in full force this upcoming season; try a baby dollesque dress by Birds of North America. Straight lines, pouty patterns, darker colours are what describes this line. Add a pair of Doc Martens, and you will really be living in the past; that is no easy feat, trust me. Rock on! Now let us go backwards another decade to the 1980s. Girls, get funky with harem pants. Yes. In all patterns,

shapes and colours. This summer, raspberry tones and orange hues will be the popular picks. Try on a really high heel for that retro look, or if you are not willing to go all out, a solid-coloured ballet flat works too.

Sticking with the pants theme, acid wash is b-a-c-k. Stony, acidy, and 1980s hairband back. Mix and match your denim in and outside of the workplace. If you are taking this turn, stick with a solid colour blouse and add funkified, oversized jewellery. Ladies in the late-‘80s and early ’90s wore colourful boots. Well, their proverbial grandchildren are back and better than ever. With a slightly more tailored look and feel, these babies can also be worn to work, and transition to a fantastical nighttime fantasy.

Lastly, some jewellery, keep a keen eye open for are pieces from Eliza. She creates new wave, gothic and show-stopping pieces for the divine. Chainy, linky and dark is what Eliza is all about. Pop one of these pieces on before heading out to a retro club, or just on a special, sexy date. All eyes will be on you, because you’ll be a “Lucky Star.” Now men, hop on the time machine with me, won’t you? The 1980s and 1990s are just as prominent for you as they are for your female counterparts. On your legs, you will find bright-coloured chinos: reds, pinks and yellows galore! You will be rolled up in Yuppie wonderland. Because your pants will be so outlandish, try to stick to a more blasé, simpler top. Think white or black, okay? You do not want to overdo it all at once. But if you must be so outlandish, feeling your oats, slip on a pair of Hudson’s Bay Company’s Converse shoes. Their multicoloured, striped kicks are to die for, and very reminiscent of the 1980s. Like, totally ’80s. If you are not into the colourful pants, skinny jeans are back. Very skinny jeans. These can be paired with funky, screen-printed t-shirts (think Keith Haring or Mickey Mouse), and denim jean jackets. On your head, wear a Boy George-esque black cap or beanie. Keeping with the vintage feel and look, try a thin, long scarf on for size. You will be wearing scarves much like Yuppie men used to wear sweaters over their shoulders. Here, you must explore the endless possibilities. On your face, you will be wearing smaller, circular sunglasses. Blue tinted specs will be seen from sea to mountain and on all shapes and sizes of face. Here, think and feel like John Lennon, only cooler… if that is even possible. How about your hands, you ask? I’m glad you asked. Triangular rings will don your fingers, and lots of them. Bronze, gold, black and Greek-patterned. On your wrists, sport braided bracelets of all colours of the rainbow: tan, navy blue, and even maroon colours will be hot. Are you ready to go back in time to the 1980s and 1990s? They are coming back for you with a vengeance, so be ready to party like it’s 1999. Over and over. Have fun, be funky. Live.

May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month. Nurse, writer, world-traveller and Consumer Advocacy Manager for HandyDart services, Linda McGowan sheds some light on this unpredictable disease. 92

our months after completing the Vancouver Marathon, Linda McGowan, a Vancouver nurse and mother of two, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1983. She was barely 35 at the time.

Canada’s disease A neurological disease, MS affects the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. When a person has MS, the myelin (the covering that protects the nerves in brain and spinal cord) is damaged and may form scar tissue. This scar tissue often blocks or slows down messages sent along the nerves, which result in a variety of symptoms. “It’s uncommon but I was diagnosed with almost no symptoms. called Lhermitte’s sign,” says McGowan, explaining how she felt an electric shock down her back when she bent her head down. Other symptoms of MS can range from numbness and tingling, vision problems, impaired speech, loss of balance and coordination, extreme fatigue, loss of mobility, and in some cases, partial or complete paralysis. Now, according to the MS Society of Canada, around 100,000 Canadians live with this disabling disease and approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. It is usually diagnosed between the ages of 15 to 40 and is thrice as likely to occur in women than in men. “Canada has the highest rates of MS in the world,” says McGowan. “MS is Canada’s disease, people don’t realize that.” There are several main types of this disease. The most common form of MS when it first

occurs is Relapsing Remitting MS (RRMS), which is characterized by attacks or relapses followed by periods of complete or partial recovery called remissions. About half the times, relapsing-remitting MS progresses to Secondary Progressive MS, where the MS symptoms start to worsen after 10 years of diagnosis. “That’s what I have,” shares McGowan, who has been using a wheelchair since 1992. “It’ll go on, and drop a bit, go on and drop a bit and you never know when that drop is going to come. The drop means getting worse.” As of now, it is unknown what causes MS, although current research points to a number of interconnecting factors like environment and genetics. Canada is a high-risk for the disease, and MS usually is most often found in areas further away

from the equator.

Unpredictable and challenging While MS is not fatal for the majority, there can be a lot of challenges and every person living with MS often faces a unique set of symptoms to manage. “Some people are diagnosed and 30 years later, they are no different. You never know with MS,” explains McGowan. “Or else you can be diagnosed and six months later, be in a wheelchair. It’s very different for everybody. It’s very unpredictable.” The unpredictability of the disease means people living with MS live in a constant state of uncertainty. According to McGowan, while she knows what her disability is right now, she remains aware of the fact that she could wake up the next morning and have it be completely different. Another challenge that arises with MS is extreme fatigue. “I always say, when you start the day, you have a cup of energy,” shares McGowan. “When that cup of energy is gone, it’s gone. And there is no way you can get it back.” This prevents spontaneity, she adds, saying how planning has become a part of life. While there is no cure for MS at the moment, there are several treatments and medications that primarily help manage the symptoms. In addition, it is recommended to

live an active, healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet.

Life with MS: “Not a deterrent to adventure.” Despite all these challenges, people who have MS can – and should – lead rich, fulfilling lives. “When you are diagnosed with something like MS, when a problem arises, you have just two choices,” says McGowan, who still works full-time as a nurse. “You can choose to sit at home and moan and groan and complain that life is not fair. Or you can take what you have and do what you can do.” That is exactly what McGowan has done. Her diagnosis did not deter her from pursuing her life’s goal to travel and see the world. In 1989, she took her first trip to China after her diagnosis. In 2005, she travelled across India by train for several weeks, visiting cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer (where she went on a four-day camel safari), Chandigarh, Shimla, Agra and finally ending her trip in Kolkatta. “I have been on every continent at least once,” says McGowan, who has travelled to more than 110 countries in the last 20 years. Some other of her travel highlights includes climbing up to 18,500 ft. on Mount Everest using a TrailRider (a single-tire wheelchair) and seeing emperor penguins on the Falkland Islands. “If I want to live my life, I can’t have MS be the main focus,” says McGowan. “I always say, being in a wheelchair is not a deterrent to adventure.” She has published her experiences in a memoir, Travelling the World with MS...In a Wheelchair, an inspirational collection of factual, humorous stories that encourage people to pursue their goals.

hile playgrounds are usually designed for children under 12, it doesn’t mean they are the only ones who can enjoy them. Next time you’re looking for a fun way to get active outdoors, head on over to your local park and try these exercises for a total body workout.

Park Bench Push-Ups (Chest, shoulders, triceps, core) Place your hands approximately shoulder width apart on the back of a park bench (or the seat of the bench for an added challenge). Take several steps back until your body forms a diagonal line. Lower your body towards the bench, without letting your hips drop. Push

your body back up to the starting position. Options: For a more advanced version, try a decline push-up by placing your feet on the playground stairs and your hands on the ground. Repeat: 10x

Hanging Row (Back, shoulders, biceps) Stand facing a swing and, with your arms straight out from your chest, grip the chains. Step back to create tension in the chains, plant your feet and lean back to a 45-degree angle. Pull your body towards the swing, squeezing your shoulder blades, bending your elbows and pulling with your arms. Lower

Options: Try facing the slide to switch it up or, for an advance move, challenge your balance by using the swings instead of the slide. Repeat: 12x each leg

Lateral Leg Lift (Hip abductors, quadriceps) Standing with your right side facing the stairs or slide, step up with your right leg while raising your left leg out to the side. Return your left leg to its starting position and step down. Options: Alternate between lifting your leg back behind you, out on a diagonal, to the side and in front of you to engage more lower body muscles. Repeat: 15x each leg

Swing Knee Tuck (Core stability, abdominals, lower back) Starting in a plank position, with your legs elevated and the tops of your feet resting on a swing, bring your knees and the swing towards your chest. Focus on using your glutes and keeping your abdominal muscles tight. Slowly return to the plank position. Options: Make it more challenging by adding a push-up or a pike before beginning each tuck. Repeat: 10x

Get ready to rule the playground by beginning every workout with a warm up. Start by power walking or jogging several laps around the park that incorporate walking lunges, high knees, arm circles and jumping jacks. Perform the exercises in a circuit – completing one after the other without rest in between – to keep your heart rate up while simultaneously strength training. Rest for at least one minute after completing the circuit once and repeat two to three times depending on your fitness level. A bonus to these bodyweight exercises is they can be done anywhere and anytime! Don’t be afraid to get creative with your workout when you’re at the park. Children seem to glide through the air with ease but monkey bars are a challenging workout on their own that engages many upper body muscles. Try scaling the jungle gym for total body conditioning that just might conquer a fear of heights at the same time. Use the swing as a great alternative to traditional suspension trainers. If you’re looking for even more variety, turn the playground into your own personal obstacle course. With monkey bars, swings, benches and stairs, a park mimics much of the traditional equipment found in a gym without the need for dumbbells or being indoors. Let yourself feel young again and have some fun while getting fit.

aking a breath with ease can easily be taken for granted. But for the over three million Canadians living with asthma, breathing isn’t always as easy as it may seem. Asthma is a long-term lung disease marked by breathing difficulties that occur when airways become inflamed and subsequently narrowed or blocked. This respiratory condition “is characterized by bronchial hyper-reactivity variable airway obstruction which results in recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness,

coughing that can vary over time and intensity,” explains Kelly Ablog-Morrant, director of Lung Disease Initiatives, Advocacy, Education & Program Services with the British Columbia Lung Association. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and often vary among how sufferers are affected. They can appear for days on end and then disappear for just as long. Not all asthma attacks are the same; they can be unpredictable and differ each time they appear. “Wheezing is the most specific sign of asthma in children,” says Ablog-Morrant. TM

“In adult patients, clinical features of asthma often are similar or overlap with other respiratory conditions.” Despite the growing number of individuals suffering from asthma and years of genetic research, the cause of asthma is still relatively undetermined. It is believed to be hereditary, triggered by the environment and a result of an impaired immune system, making it difficult to pinpoint a single cause among the large number of triggers. “We know that there are going to be things that we can inherit from our mom or dad, but it’s really things that we’re exposed to, given our genetic makeup, that really determine whether or not we’re going to develop asthma,” explains Dr. Del Dorscheid, director of St. Paul’s Hospital’s Severe Asthma Clinic and associate professor at the University of British Columbia. “We now know that some of those things are: did your mom smoke, what was the psychological stresses of the environment that your mom and you grew up in, what were the early childhood viruses, did you live in an urban area that had certain urbanization particles? We realize now that the environmental influences are probably much larger than the genetic influences.” Asthmatics often experience attacks in reaction to a trigger. A trigger is any condition that causes inflammation of the airways and it can be both allergic and non-allergic. “Asthma symptoms can be triggered by irritants, allergens, respiratory infections and exercise, although the common trigger in the 0-6 age group is respiratory infections,” says Ablog-Morrant.

For those with asthma, knowing your individual triggers and avoiding any high risk factors is important for minimizing inflammation and reducing symptoms. Recognizing the symptoms and being thoroughly assessed by a health care professional is the first essential step to get relief from and control over the disease. “They first have to have recognition,” says Dorscheid, in regards to treating the illness.

“There are a lot of children that don’t really realize why they’re not playing sports. They just get short of breathe so they’ve taught themselves not to play. In adults, that’s a bigger problem. Adults think, well I never had asthma as a child so I can’t have asthma as an adult.” “The second step is educating the patient about what asthma is,” he says. “It’s about inflammation or swelling of the airways, it comes from things we breathe in. So the first step in controlling asthma is to control what we breathe in. So know what you’re allergic to or know what your triggers are because

TM

not all triggers for asthma are allergic triggers.” After improving the air quality in their homes, Dorscheid suggests that patients need to understand their medicinal needs. All asthmatics will need a controller medication, individually prescribed based on the severity of symptoms. “Every asthmatic, once they have insight into what they have, what their triggers are, how then medicine can ameliorate all that, have to know what their action plan is,” says Dorscheid. According to the Asthma Society of Canada, “six out of 10 people with asthma do not have control of their disease.” With proper education and the tools to manage the disease, most people with asthma live active, healthy lives. “Asthma is a beautiful disease because it’s fully reversible, fully treatable,” explains Dorscheid. “If the patient themselves understand what it’s all about and what triggers it, and how then they can manage their medicine on a day to day basis, they should be able to do everything that a non-asthmatic can do, even in horrible pollen based seasons.” The more attention you give asthma, the less it will take from you.

A few easy tips to help homeowners conserve water and also save money on their water bill.

BY PETRINA D’SOUZA

Keep drinking water in the fridge Running the tap to get cold drinking water is both timeconsuming and wasteful. Consider storing drinking water in the fridge so when you go looking for a cool drink it is readily available.

W

hile Canadians get ready for the warm sunny days, one cannot forget the discomforting issues that come along with the beautiful weather. Namely, heat, dryness, dehydration and most importantly, water scarcity. Let’s understand the situation – water is a necessity during summer, we tend to use and overuse it, and this leads

to water shortage. So why not start preparing for this crucial need right away? A few changes in your daily life can ensure smoother and hydrated days ahead. “It is critical that we act as responsible stewards of our environment. Conserving on many levels is important and saving water is no different. There are many ways to

save water without compromising our day-today lives,” assures Adam Findlay, Senior Marketing Manager at Pfister, manufacturers of innovative and eco-friendly faucets. Findlay provides a few easy tips to help homeowners conserve water and also save money on their water bill.

Make use of rainwater

Making good use of your rainwater is responsible. Collect rainwater and use it to water plants. Using a rain barrel to collect rain water for irrigation purposes during drier times is environmentally and financially-smart, and will significantly help water usage. Nothing saves on a water bill like using what nature provides for free. Many Canadians are guilty of over watering their lawns. Paying attention to weather conditions (rainfall/ drought) and watering only when necessary can help water conservation. Also, washing your car in the driveway can use far more water than a commercial car wash. Using common sense TM outdoors is key.

DARPAN

Install a new toilet Your old toilet is flushing money down the drain. Your toilet can be one of the largest water-consuming items in your house, so update it and go with a smaller version. Toilets can be installed fairly easily and can make a very significant impact on your water consumption. Go with a new model that uses less water to flush or one that has two flushing modes. Dual flush and low flush toilets are readily available and perform as well as the older-style toilets that can use three times the water per flush.

Modern eco-friendly showerheads don’t compromise performance so there’s no need to fear a weak water flow. It’s also worthwhile to consider avoiding baths, as they use much more water than a typical shower. Use an eco-friendly showerhead Installing an eco-friendly showerhead is an inexpensive way to automatically reduce the amount of water you use in the shower. A lower l/m (litre per minute) showerhead can help greatly with water conservation. Modern eco-friendly showerheads don’t compromise performance so there’s no need to fear a weak water flow. Reconsider how you do your dishes Wash your dishes in a half full sink and only use the dishwasher for full loads. A partial load can use the same amount of water, but you will be washing more often and wasting both energy and water. picture may be worth a thousand words but if you’re distracted by how high it’s hung or how many others surround it, it may be hard to appreciate its value. Whether you’re investing in a timeless piece or displaying your most treasured family moments, your works of art are worth taking the time to hang right. The oft used rule of thumb

104

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 6 Re f l e c t i n g T h e S o u t h - A s i a n L i f e s t y l e

is art should be hung at eyelevel; however, it’s a rule worth breaking – not everyone’s eyes are at the same level and neither are their ceilings. Resist the urge to install your art directly in front of you and, instead, visually cut your wall vertically into four quadrants. Going from top to bottom, aim to hang pieces in the third quadrant. This guideline works well for rooms with higher ceilings. More specifically, most experts agree artwork should

DARPAN

TM

be hung centred around 57 inches from the floor, the typical average seen in most galleries. Keep in mind furniture and other home decor accessories may interfere with the recommended measurements; you’ll have to consider the placement of photos in reference to what is already in the room. Keep any artwork about eight inches above couches or chairs to avoid hitting your head. Use existing wainscoting as a

natural border and adjust your calculations accordingly. Besides being too high, hanging art too small in relation to the wall it’s hung on is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make. Engage the entire area so as not to allow the negative space to overwhelm the artwork; cover at least two thirds of the occupied space with art or photos. Slightly too big will look better than slightly too small. Art should generally be the same shape and

can also detract from the original artwork, she says. You don’t have to group art together at all depending on your space. Allow ornate frames to take centre stage on their own or look for a large piece of art that maximizes the space for maximum viewing pleasure. Mix mediums, colours and styles for the most visual engagement. Try an assortment of photographs, abstract art, landscapes and paintings in both black and white and

DARPAN

TM

various colours and avoid grouping all works of the same style together. If traditional hanging styles don’t suit your space, add shelves and lean frames against them, hang works from the ceiling with decorative wire or rope, or layer pieces of varying shapes and sizes along a mantle. How you frame, mat or mount your art will also add or detract from its visual impact. A neutral combination, such as black frames and white mats, creates a cohesive look throughout your space without the worry that mismatched framing will take away from the work on display. On the contrary, each piece may need to be treated individually to ensure the art is enhanced and not overpowered by your framing choice. Art, especially masterpieces made with little hands, doesn’t always need to be hung in frames. Consider clipboards

for rotating children’s pieces or use ribbons, wires and clothespins for a more creative look. Wherever you place your art doesn’t have to be its permanent home. Just as you may enjoy moving your furniture every few months or updating your accessories every season, change your art every once in a while for a fresh and inspired look. An easy way to ensure you enjoy the look of your framed photos or pieces of art is to take a photo of it once it’s hung. If it was a photo of someone else’s house or a room in a magazine, would you think the art is hung appropriately? Just as art is a representation of one’s own journey, story or aesthetic, how you hang it can be just as unique. Don’t be afraid to get creative, ignore all the rules and let your art inspire how it is hung.

orientation as the wall it is trying to fill. When hanging more than one piece, keep two to four inches between frames, relative to how large or small your works may be. According to Reza at KeenART Media Ltd., there are no standard rules to follow but “balance, safety and matching with the background or wall colours are very important” when deciding how and where to hang a work of art. Art can be hung in several statement-making ways. A grid of frames doesn’t detract from individual photos but is pleasing to the eye on its own. Similarly, a gallery style display with many works randomly radiating around a larger or weightier centred piece can have quite the impact. Popular as gallery walls may be, it’s easy to go overboard and use too many frames on one wall cautions Reza. “Not matching colours or multiple frame styles side by side”

Most experts agree artwork should be hung centred around 57 inches from the floor, the typical average seen in most galleries.

Tofino, which is about a six-hour drive away from Vancouver, is the beach town to enjoy cold-water surfing. If you’re a non-surfer, no worries – there is still plenty for you to do. You can sign up for a surf class, lounge on the beach, relax at Hot Springs Cove or check out the botanical gardens.

This bustling, world-class city is a tourist’s dream year round, but I’ve found that travelling to London in May or early June is ideal, as the weather is pleasant and the influx of summer tourists – students and families – haven’t arrived yet in droves. The best way to get around London is to walk, in addition to using the famed Underground rapid transit system. Once you familiarize yourself with the Underground’s various lines, it’s easy to figure out and get around the city. Walking along brick lined sidewalks, London is a historian’s dream come true with monuments or historical plaques around every corner – it feels like every cobblestoned street has a story to tell. A visit to London wouldn’t be complete without visiting some of its iconic sights, namely:

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament: A magnificent sight, perfect place to take a London selfie with the iconic clock tower and grandiose parliament buildings. Westminster Abbey: This architecturallystunning Gothic church is where monarchs have been coronated, in addition to being buried, since the 10th century. England’s most significant historical figures are also buried in the Abbey including Charles Darwin. Trafalgar Square: Home

through idyllic St. James’s Park with its ponds and swans towards the illustrious palace, which is an excellent place to take pictures and see the ‘changing of the guard’ ceremony. The Tower of London & London Bridge: Plan to spend the day exploring the royal palace and fortress, which is home to the exquisite Crown Jewels collection, famed White Tower, legendary

is in the same vicinity, so it’s a perfect place to take pictures with the picturesque structure. The London Eye is a giant ferris wheel located on the south bank of the Thames that offers breathtaking views of the city. In addition, the Shard is a 95-storey skyscraper that offers London’s highest viewing platform and from here, you’ll witness unparalleled 360-degree views for up to 40 miles. Theatre lovers will want to visit Shakespeare’s Globe, a replica of an original Elizabethan theatre showcasing Shakespeare’s plays, or the West End Theatre District to catch must-see plays and musicals. London is home to numerous museums and galleries, but the Natural History Museum and Tate Modern are worth a visit and amongst my favourites. Shopping enthusiasts will want to explore the bustling Oxford Street, home to hundreds of stores boasting the latest European fashion.

EATS London isn’t just about fish and chips anymore, and has transformed into a foodie city over the last few decades. The London of today showcases international cuisine and is home to fine dining Michelin-starred restaurants, chic gastropubs and champagne lounges, trendy hot spots serving tapas, and of course, traditional British pubs, restaurants and afternoon tea. For unique and tantalizing culinary experiences, here are a few restaurants that will delight your palate: Lima: Renowned Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez Veliz opened Lima in 2012, and two years later, Lima was the first Peruvian restaurant to receive a Michelin star. “Our idea of gastronomic luxury is simply having something

Hostels: Are cost-effective, located throughout the city, and a great way to meet new people if you’re travelling alone or with a friend. Gymkhana: Celebrity chefs and food critics voted Chef Karam Sethi’s Gymkhana as Britain’s #1 restaurant in 2014 (National Restaurant Awards). This Michelin-star Indian restaurant serves Indian food with a twist and its style is “inspired by colonial India’s gymkhana clubs.” New York is often described as the “city that never sleeps,” but I find that London is “truly the city that never sleeps.” Whether you’re checking out a nightclub or pub in Leicester Square or chilling at a rooftop bar or chic lounge in Soho, Londoners and tourists alike revel in the city’s eclectic nightlife. A few places to visit are Sky Garden and Shard’s Oblix, both offer amazing late night views; 19th century style Gordon’s Wine Bar with an extensive wine list; and the glamourous Bob Bob Ricard, where each table is equipped with a “press for champagne” button.

Travelling on your own terms and where in the world it can take you.

Taking a solo trip can be a learning experience where saying yes or no to yourself, and only yourself, is an unusual but freeing opportunity to grow.

accountable for your actions. Taking a solo trip can be a learning experience where saying yes or no to yourself, and only yourself, is an unusual but freeing opportunity to grow. One of the biggest benefits to a solo trip is that you’re alone; being alone means you get to do what you want, when you want, how you want, says Teja. “It allows you to be selfish instead of travelling with companions and always making sacrifices.”

You don’t have to wait for others to get ready or compromise on what you really want to do with your time. Last minute decisions are easy to accommodate and your opinion is the only one to consider. Being on your own schedule can ensure your trip goes exactly how you envisioned. Travelling without a partner means the memories you create are yours and yours alone. For some, the solitude is welcome, allowing

“Travel already brings out personal discovery,” says Rahim Teja, international travel consultant for Flight Centre Coquitlam Centre Mall, “but it is much more profound when you are the only thoughts and your environments. You will get to know yourself on a much deeper level.” for a chance to reconnect with oneself and embrace their uninterrupted thoughts. “Travelling alone allows you to really get to know yourself,” Teja says. For others, the need to reminisce after a day of sightseeing or the conclusion of your travel can feel quite empty without anyone to share it with. While you won’t have anyone telling you to hurry up or wait up, being on your own means there’s no one encouraging you to climb to the top of the mountain or try the menu item you can’t pronounce. Challenging yourself to push through the doubts without any one to influence you can be both empowering and invigorating. Don’t let yourself stop you from your own adventure.

Tips for staying safe Cost is often seen as a barrier to travel but it doesn’t have to be even if you’e vacationing alone. “The only real times that a solo traveller will pay more is accommodation,”says Teja, suggesting hostels, couchsurfing and ride sharing as easy ways to reduce spending. Eating alone may seem daunting if it’s your first solo jaunt but it doesn’t have to be the worst part of your adventure. Force yourself to speak to the staff – they’re often a wealth of information and may point you to hidden gems or local loves within the city. Use the down time to crack open a new book, learn the language of the city you’re in or plan for the next day’s adventure. Of course with any trip there are concerns and solo travel isn’t an exception. Especially for women and younger travellers, safety is an issue that can’t be ignored. “When travelling solo only you are going to have your back,” says Teja. “You’ll make friends along the way but they won’t care for you like your best friend or mom would. The main thing is to always be aware. Be aware of your surroundings and be mindful that you are in someone else’s country.”

TM

Get educated. Before arriving in a new city or as you prepare to leave your hotel for the day, read maps, look up travel times and plan your routes so you’re prepared for taxi trips or long walks. Blend in. Tourists are more likely to be taken advantage of so try to avoid drawing attention to yourself with flashy clothing or a guidebook attached to your hand. Make believe. Don’t be afraid to tell a little lie when asking others for help; it’s okay to pretend you’re meeting a friend. Be confident. Walk with purpose and trust your gut. Don’t do something if it doesn’t feel right. “Plan, get tips, always have a ‘Plan B’ and enjoy the ride!” Teja says. “I think if you keep your mind sharp you can travel anywhere alone – there are so many friendly people out there to meet!” If you’re itching to go abroad or in need of an exciting adventure, all it takes is a little planning to turn your dream vacation into a reality even if no one else is on board. Take Teja’s advice, “Why wait for friends to have money for travel when you are ready to go now?”

MINI COOPER BMW heir to the much-loved 1 M Coupe sports car, the rear-wheel drive M2 utilizes a 3.0-litre Twinpower Turbo powerplant and possesses significantly-improved stats compared to its predecessor: 365 hp, up to 369 lb-ft of torque, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds. That last number clocks in at 4.5 seconds if the driver is using the standard 6-speed manual rather than the seven-speed double clutch transmission. For racetrack excursions, an optional M Dynamic Mode modulates engine power, braking and traction to allow controlled drifts around corners.

BMW group took the sporty Cooper S trim of the new third-generation Mini Clubman to tempt audiences at ViAS. The split-rear-door estate car is the biggest in the brand’s lineup with a cargo capacity of 360 litres, or 1,250 litres when the rear seats are folded down. To move the big Mini, the Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Twinpower Turbo engine that produces 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A total of three transmissions are offered: a standard six-speed manual, six-speed Steptronic automatic, and for the first time, an eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission featuring steering wheel shift paddles and launch control. in time for the warmer weather, BMW group also introduced the new Mini Convertible. not available on previous models, a fully automatic soft-top roof can rise up or lower down in 18 seconds, and is operational while the vehicle is moving at speeds up to 30 km/h. The four-passenger Convertible has grown in size slightly, by 98 millimetres in length and 1 millimetre in height, and luggage capacity is increased by about 25 per cent.

AUDI The four-ringed german luxury automaker welcomed show-goers to its booth with a trio of impressive vehicles. The 2017 A4 allroad quattro takes the respected qualities of the familiar A4 and adds 34 millimetres more ground clearance and a unique rugged look; the RS 7 performance bumps the standard model’s horsepower up to 605; and completing the threesome was Audi’s most powerful production sports car ever: the 2017 R8 V10 plus, which uses half of the same components as the R8 LMS racecar, generating 610 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.

The former 1.8-litre four-cylinder mill producing 201 horsepower (hp) and 229 lb-ft of torque has been bumped TM

Stepping on the throttle results in snappy, seamless shifting that really gives the SLK300 some jolt in a civilized, largely quiet fashion. it might not sound like it, but acceleration is brisk and 0-100 km/h can be achieved in 5.8 seconds, according to manufacturer specs. You can vary the amount and aggressiveness of the gear changes through three selectable modes: economy, Sport and Manual, the latter to be used in conjunction with the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There is also an unobtrusive eCo Start/ Stop function that turns off the engine while idling. Combined with the new powertrain setup, fuel economy is improved, and

over a week of testing, in both top up and down conditions, i averaged a combined city and highway consumption figure of 11.9 L/100 km. The roadster’s appearance has been steadily improving throughout the generations, and the current variant embodies a look that conveys performance and elegant top-down motoring. The large bi-xenon headlamps and rotund emblem fill the face of the car, and the sport suspension gives the SLK a low, squatted stance. My press vehicle had a handful of bundled options that make sitting and driving in it even more enjoyable. The panoramic Vario Roof, part of the premium package (pp), turns the hardtop into one giant moonroof. operating the top is great fun as well – the controls are hidden under a flip-up leather palm rest straight out of Mission Impossible. included in the pp is the CoMAnD navigation system, which still ranks among the better oeM gpS units i’ve used. The computer accepts destinations quickly and accurately, and inputs are easily entered using a rotary knob, something i normally find cumbersome to manipulate. pARKTRoniC is an available standalone option, and one i’m not sure i could live without. using built-in sensors fitted around the car, the parking assistance feature emits a series of increasingly urgent beeps whenever you get too close to an unfriendly object. even though there’s no backup camera, i didn’t feel as though visual assistance would have been all that more useful given the efficacy of the audible alerts. The SLK300 represents a refined open-air driving experience without too many flaws, so it will be interesting to see how Mercedes improves upon the two-seater in the remake. A mentionable downside, not necessarily unique to this convertible, is the limited trunk space. especially when the hardtop is in the retracted position, opening becomes too narrow to fit a moderately-sized cardboard box. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK300 is on sale in dealerships now, and the SLC should reach our shores sometime this year.

don’t often start off any truck review with a mention of luxury or fuel economy, but i will in the case of the Ram 1500 ecoDiesel Laramie Limited, because those are simply two of the comfortable and efficient pickup’s standout features. Carrying over into 2016, some changes for the 1500 include the addition of the aforementioned top-of-the-line Laramie Limited in the lineup, which FCA lent us to drive for a week. headlining the new model is a redesigned billet silver grille with huge RAM lettering prominently displayed in the centre, and matching the shiny face are big polished 20-inch forged aluminum

lumbar support and 10-way memory driverside adjustability. Being the Longhorn edition, our tester also had a Southwestern theme manifested through graphics – such as an outline of a Texas bull’s horns – inset into the armrest and seatbacks. Storage is always a huge plus in a utility vehicle or otherwise, and the Limited has it in spades utilizing a new centre console that houses a cell phone and tablet holder underneath a sliding cover made from real wood. occupants up front sit high resulting in a great view of the road, and there is loads of rear legroom for Crew Cab owners. Controls are easily accessible and the infotainment/ climate controls are a cinch to operate thanks to FCA’s uconnect system. Responsible for the 1500’s miserly fuel consumption is the turbocharged 3.0-litre ecoDiesel V6 engine, considered a small powerplant in its class. Don’t be fooled by the compact size – the V6 generates 240 horsepower and a mammoth 420 lb-ft of torque and is capable of towing up to 9,200 pounds. Taking the truck on a lengthy trip down south on the i-5, the pickup picked up speed quickly following any application of the throttle. Although i didn’t hitch anything up in the back, the extra torque is definitely noticeable during manoeuvres like overtaking on the highway. All the while, the ride remains composed and cushy in most conditions. i am a huge fan of diesel, but some newcomers may find the noise emanating out from under the hood a bit much. helping the efficiency is a TorqueFlite eightspeed automatic transmission, as well as Ram’s proprietary pulse-width modulation technology that reduces the load on the alternator and parasitic energy loss. in addition, the engine has a stop/start function, and the 1500 sits on four-corner air suspension that hunkers down the truck for better aerodynamics at high speeds. The proof? i managed a pretty remarkable fuel economy average of 11.0 L/100 km in mixed city and highway driving.

Comedy of errors, bikini babes, goofy dudes, action sequences... All the hallmarks of the Housefull series are present in abundance in Housefull 3 as well. In fact the director duo – Sajid-Farhad claim Housefull 3 to be better and bigger than the first two films in this franchise. While it is usually the quirky characters that have dominated the past series, actor Boman Irani said, “Housefull 3 is not just about different characters but also about the plot. I think, this time around, we have a very interesting plot. All the characters have a new dynamic.” Now who doesn’t like comedies that are backed by an interesting plot, right?

Sarbjit is a biopic on the life of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian farmer who was convicted of terrorism and spying in Pakistan and was sentenced to death. The film also depicts the struggles of his sister Dalbir Kaur, wife Sukhpreet Kaur, and two daughters back in Punjab, to have him released. National Award-winning director Omung Kumar said, “I have gone through news reports, photographs, and YouTube videos related to the struggle of Sarabjit’s family back in India. I have seen who crossed the border and went to Pakistan to fight for him. He was convicted for being Manjit Singh. He got a 21-gun salute [when his body came from Pakistan]. We are showing all facts.” An inspiring true story backed by powerhouse performers like Randeep Hooda (Sarabjit), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Dalbir Kaur), Richa Chadha (Sukhpreet Kaur) just can’t be missed. ore than successful movies, franchises are the actual lifeblood of Hollywood studios. Executives often choose tried-and-true over original ideas, to the point old success stories like Independence Day and Ghostbusters are being brought back to life, decades after their heyday. Considering the middling success of Dumb and Dumber To and the straight-up failure of Sin City 2, this practice is still to yield results.

wArCrAFT Releasing: June 10 Inspired by the popular videogame series “World of Warcraft”, this adaptation takes a rather pacifist approach to the plot: Facing extinction, humans and orcs are pushed into a war neither group wants. Their leaders have more in common than they let on, and their sense of honour is the only thing preventing a catastrophic confrontation. Even though director Duncan Jones is a reliable filmmaker (Moon, Source Code), Warcraft’s first trailer left hardcore fans cold.

ivek Bhaskaran’s journey from India to Seattle’s competitive tech community can easily infect aspiring entrepreneurs with an accelerating passion to move forward on his path. As the CEO of QuestionPro and Survey Analytics, he has left a tremendous impact in the survey and research domain. Together, Survey Analytics and QuestionPro offer survey, feedback and insight participation software available for engaging customers, employees and other key constituencies. Born in a town named Margherita – a remote town in India’s north-

eastern state of Assam that is known for its scenic beauty, coal mining, and tea gardens, Bhaskaran moved to Kolkatta where he spent a majority of his formative years. Post high school, the tech aspirant moved to Russia and then to Brigham Young University (BYU) in the United States to pursue Computer Engineering. “I was extremely fortunate to graduate from BYU at the peak of the dotcom boom. I had over 10 job offers right out of college and I moved up north to Seattle and started working for a small boutique tech consulting company,” he says.

DARPAN

TM

Securing the title of a consultant, Bhaskaran did not feel satisfied. He explains, “Over the last few years, working as a consultant made me realize how much I hated working for other people. As a consultant for big companies like Washington Mutual, I always joked that I was the professional apologizer.” The techie yearned for freedom to implement his own technical strategies while experimenting with business models and new ideas, thus conceptualizing QuestionPro. Shortly after its creation in 2005, QuestionPro earned a position in Inc. magazine’s list of the fastest growing private companies in 2008, ranking 172nd overall and 25th among business-service providers. With offices in India, US, Mexico and Germany, Bhaskaran’s brainchild QuestionPro, now in mergence with Survey Analytics, is netting its growth on a global map. It tackles four product lines within its domain – Surveys, an easy to use and create, send, analyze surveys; Workforce, employee/HR facing tool allowing Pulse polling, 360 Feedback, and workforce analytics and intelli-gence; Communities, enables companies to create digital communities for crowdsourcing, insight and listening to the voice of the customer; and CX, customer experience measurement system that systematically allows companies to stack rank and see how their customers perceive them and what are the areas of continuous improvement.

Q&a

– and I told her – “Honey I am going to quit my job and I am going [to] start/run QuestionPro. I’m done.” She looked at me with a sense of bewilderment, horror and pride. “But what about our mortgage?” – was her next statement. My answer was – “Well - we’ll figure it out. I have 6 months of savings” – to which she said – “Ok cool.” – We then proceeded to go back home, cook dinner and the next day QuestionPro was officially incorporated.

Well three things; is half the battle – I would strongly recommend that entrepreneurs take the plunge before they get settled with kids and family. Not that it’s not possible, but risk appetite usually dies when you have toddlers running around the house or you have a pregnant wife for that matter! rules. When I started QuestionPro, and given I was in Seattle, I remember a bunch of my Microsoft friends laughing at me – and we all know now that everyone who worked at MSFT made exactly zero dollars in stock options between 2000 and 2010 – and they hated their lives. The greatest thing in an open and capitalistic society like the US, Canada et al – is that it gives us freedom from being judged. Listen to a lot of people but make your own rules and judgment around what you want to do. me, value is defined by either when a customer pays for your service/ idea (in the B2B context) or folks truly enjoy using your product – in the B2C context. It’s truly not about your next round of funding or your next flashy PR article – it’s all about creating independent value for the customer and hence the business.

What would you describe

I remember vividly – I worked as a consultant for Washington Mutual in downtown Seattle. I lived in a town called Issaquah, just 20 miles east of Seattle and I took the metro bus from Issaquah to Seattle everyday to work. One day, in the fall of 2005 as I was returning back from work, I got off at the Park-andRide, my wife Kalpana came to pick me up as usual. I got into the car and something clicked

Yes, there is one thing that I am very excited about – we imported a couple of auto rickshaws – yes, the same one’s you see running around in India everywhere – here in California and we finally managed to get it registered and certified. We use it at our company events to give rides to all the folks here to give them a first hand taste of what it feels like riding in an auto rickshaw. I am personally a big car/motorcycle enthusiast, so this means a lot to me personally!

HOROSCOPE ALL SIGNS:

Spring is in full bloom all around us as the life-giving Sun moves through Taurus and Gemini. We’re feeling more inspired and the longer daylight hours allows more leisure time. Opportunities to explore creative pursuits and intellectual fancies keep us engaged. The Sun and Venus line up in lively Gemini is increasing our sense of curiosity and our need to connect with others. But hark; Mercury is in retrograde from April 29 to May 23. This can cause delays and confusion in our communications, and throw a monkey wrench (or two) into the best laid plans. Double check your bookings and allow extra time in your travels. That said, this can be an excellent time for research and creative pursuits. Just hold off buying any big-ticket items until after May 23.

Aries (MArch 21-April 19) You might feel a bit restless as you’re getting ready to take things to the next level Aries. With Mercury in retrograde, this can be a tricky time getting everyone on the same page, so patience is a virtue now. Give some consideration to your communication style. How clearly are you presenting your ideas to others? You don’t like to mince words (you are a direct sign). Consider where the other party is coming from and what makes sense to them. A little diplomacy never hurt anyone, right? Your stamina is high right now making outdoor activities, sports and personal health projects attractive. Your sex drive is high now too (It might be time to expand the family?). Lucky days: May 4, 5, 31 June 1, 27, 28 Challenging days: May 17, 18 June 13, 14

TAurus (April 20-MAy 20) This is a strong time of year for your Taurus! The Sun revitalizes you giving you a renewed sense of self and purpose. This is an excellent time to take inventory of all aspects of your life. It’s time to cultivate and grow what’s important to you. Wait until after Mercury goes direct on May 23 before signing any contracts or making a major purchase. Yet prior to that is an excellent time for research and reflection. Mars sits opposite your sign throughout June pushing you to make a stand. Important decisions will be made. Investing in land, your home, your personal estate are favoured. Your sense of wealth and the good life increases throughout the spring and summer. Lucky days: May 6, 7 June 2, 3, 29, 30 Challenging days: May 19, 20, 21 June 15, 16, 17

GeMini (MAy 21-June 20) This is a hot time of year Gemini! A number of planets are gathering together in your sign bringing you energy, amusement and stimulation! You can project yourself to the world with confidence and charisma now. The question is, what are you trying to get across? June is a particularly good time for all kinds of relationships. If you need help or support, this is an excellent time to ask the powers that be. You have a much easier time getting your foot in the door or getting someone to lend you their ear. What are the ideas you’ve been cooking throughout the year? June is the time to pitch them! Gemini’s involved in areas of writing, marketing, sales, and public relations are sitting pretty. Lucky days: May 8, 9 June 4, 5 Challenging days: May 22, 23 June 18, 19

cAncer (June 21-July 22) Communications might be a little tricky with coworkers, friends and community members Cancer. Mercury in retrograde throughout May can throw a monkey wrench in the gears. You might need some time to rest if possible. Your birthday is right around the corner and it’s good if you can take an opportunity to reflect on your last year. How did things go? Or more importantly how do you feel about how things went? Activities that allow you to calm your mind such as meditation, yoga,

The new moon in Cancer on July 4 is the best time to set your intentions for your personal year ahead. Lucky days: May 10, 11 June 6, 7 Challenging days: May 24, 25 June 20, 21, 22

Leo (JuLy 23-Aug. 22) Minor conflicts can arise on the home front Leo. This might be between family members, or due to matters related to children. Try to remain patient and calm if possible. If you need to, head out for a walk and take some deep breaths. Do whatever it takes to ground yourself. Meanwhile, the Sun moves into your 11th house and you’ll be so busy with friends, social networks, clubs and associations, that you’ll forget what was bothering you to begin with(C'est la vie). CANADIAN IMMIGRANTS

SHARE THEIR STORIES

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: Sushant : The biggest obstacle faced so far was to get my dad move permanently to Canada. My mother passed away in 2009 after a critical illness and with my dad being alone in India, I wanted to move him quickly to Canada. I sponsored my dad in 2010 and after several years of wait, I recently got his PR and he is moving to Canada in the next couple of months. It has been a long journey and several levels of emotions before we could re-unite.

Sushant Bansal works at TELUS Communications as Sr. IT Project Manager Chandna Bansal works at Aeroinfo Systems (Boeing Canada) as a QA Analyst Aditya Bansal is 3.5 years old

Getting Here: Sushant Bansal first came to Canada in 2005 for his post-graduation. He lived at his uncle’s place in Toronto while completing his education and eventually decided to settle down in the country. “Canada is a land of diverse cultures. People are so friendly and helpful here. The country has a great infrastructure so life can be better planned and managed here,” says Sushant, sharing his experience living in Canada. With the support of his uncle, Sushant quickly got accustomed to the country. “I was fortunate enough to have someone who held my hand (my uncle) and supported me in my initial years in Canada. So, with the help of my uncle, it

took me less than 4-5 months to get used to people, weather and surrounding,” says Sushant, who is a Senior IT Project Manager at TELUS Communications in Vancouver. It was however a challenge for Sushant to understand a new culture and adjust in it. “It was hard to relate to case studies given during education sessions. There was a learning curve to fit into the class crowd. You need to know which sports people follow, what are the winter and summer activities, what is the work lifestyle, and it took few years to adapt completely,” he explains. In 2009, Sushant got married to Chandna, and a year later she moved

Since we moved here, it has been many years of hard work and determination to settle down in Canada. From Toronto to Vancouver – trying to find a place where we can adjust to work and weather, having a kid and ensuring we get to spend more time with our son, buying a house especially when they are so expensive, did take a lot of time and energy. Our family resolution from last year is that we will now have more time for ourselves so that we

to Canada. It has been more than five years that the Bansal family has set up base in the country and they believe their overall journey has been great. “Moving to a new country is always full of excitement along with hiccups but with determination, we have overcome our hurdles and worked hard to reach our goals,” the couple says. One of the hurdles Sushant had to overcome was finding a job. “It was a bit challenging as you need to establish relationships and right contacts to find your first job. After meeting many people through various forums and one to one meetings, it was way better to find a job easily,” he recalls. Chandna, who works at Aeroinfo Systems (Boeing Canada) as a QA Analyst, had a better experience since Sushant was already settled in the same field of work and could give references. “She also had experience working in various countries in

can spend quality time together and enjoy Canada as we explore more.

Advice for future immigrants: It is always tough to move with families so that you can give a better life to your loved ones. Hard work is always there but finding strategic moves can help you settle down faster. It is also important to find balance between work and family. Meet more and more people around you and make new friends as they are going to be the pillars of support and accompaniment in your rainyshiny days. We all are part of the same family and that is our biggest strength living far apart from our homeland.

Memories of your homeland: We always miss being with family and friends and we miss them the most during the festival season. Even though we have enough friends here and we do celebrate all our Indian festivals with pop and show, we still miss our homeland. It always brings back nostalgic memories whenever we visit India.

Europe and UK which gave her an edge to easily adapt to Canada’s work culture,” adds Sushant. The Bansal family look at Canada as “a beautiful place with multi-cultures.” During their stay in Vancouver and travelling to different places in Canada, they have learned about various cultures, festivals and food. “Only challenge we faced is to get PR for our parents. There has been a really long wait to get our parents PR which makes it emotionally challenging to settle down here,” points out Sushant. Despite the challenges, they love living in Canada. “We will continue to be here while we travel across Canada and other countries to explore more and more,” the Bansals say.
