Count on us when it comes to dealing with ICBC My wife and I were recently clients of Perminder Tung in our ICBC claim case. Perminder was very professional, friendly, and upfront with us. He kept us in the loop with his negotiations with ICBC and assured us that he will do the best he can to make sure we get what we deserve. In the end, Perminder was able to settle for an amount that was beyond what we thought we would get. My wife and I are very satisfied with Perminder's work and highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a great and honest lawyer.”

ARPAN readers, we are all set to present the 9th Annual DARPAN’s Extraordinary Achievement Awards on September 14, 2018, in Surrey. Like every year, the Gala event will showcase 10 great achievers in the South Asian community. Complementing the Awards is our September/October issue which highlights the concept of achievement in various forms. On the cover is Tom Gill, mayoral candidate in Surrey’s 2018 Municipal Elections. Gill has called Surrey home for the past 30 years and has seen the city blossom into a hub of potential and opportunities. With his experience and passion for the community, he has now taken on the challenge of running for the position of Mayor in the Municipal Elections. As part of his platform, Gill clearly puts forth his intentions of recreating Surrey into a 21st century city and shares his views and solutions to some of the crucial issues the city is currently facing. Talking about achievement, our feature on creating a healthier South Asian kitchen highlights some creative ways we can achieve a healthy lifestyle on an Indian diet. The Fitness piece focuses on five alternatives when you don’t have fitness equipment. With kids back in school, this issue also includes a light article on making homework easier for both parents and children with simple tips that honour the child’s natural energy. There is a lot of in store this issue. Make sure to share your views via our social media pages or by emailing at editor@darpanmagazine.com. Enjoy!

DARPAN’S 1 What measures will B.C. take for the safe

One of the primary goals is to reduce the number of wildfires caused by people. Human-caused wildfires are preventable and they unnecessarily divert firefighting resources from naturally occurring fires. We need everyone to do their part by refraining from activities that may cause wildfires. If you’re a smoker, always fully extinguish your cigarette and dispose it responsibly. Never throw it out of your vehicle window. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, you can call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

regulation of cannabis?

B.C.’s legislation provides a sound foundation for the regulation and safe implementation of legalized cannabis and reflects the Province’s goal of prioritizing public health and safety, particularly for children and youth. Impaired driving by a drug and/or alcohol is illegal in Canada and will remain so after cannabis is legalized. Police are already able to test for drug-impaired driving using Standard Field Sobriety Tests and through the use of Drug Recognition Experts. But we’re also strengthening our laws by providing police with additional tools to remove drug-affected drivers from the road for 90 days. And, we’re extending B.C.’s zero-tolerance restriction for the presence of alcohol to cover specific drugs, such as THC, for new drivers. Like other provinces, we’re still waiting for oral fluid screening devices to be procured and distributed to police across the country. B.C. will also develop its own public education and awareness initiatives that are tailored to the needs of British Columbians.

8 Based on the past and current B.C. wildfires, is there anything that the province and public can do differently to avoid it in the coming years?

HON. MIKE FARNWORTH MINISTER OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND SOLICITOR GENERAL

2 How will this legalization affect the younger generation?

The Cannabis Control and Licensing Act contains a number of specific provisions designed to help keep cannabis out of the hands of children and youth and reduce their exposure. Children and youth also learn about substance use, including cannabis, in their classrooms, from Kindergarten through Grade 10, through B.C.’s Physical Health Education curriculum. 3 Are there any marketing plans in place to

keep cannabis out of the wrong hands?

Consumers will be able to access legally produced cannabis from public and private provinciallylicensed cannabis stores. Licensed retailers will only be allowed to sell cannabis and cannabis accessories, and will be prohibited from selling other products alongside cannabis such as liquor, tobacco, food, gas, clothing and lottery (there will be exceptions for rural businesses). Additionally, under the federal Cannabis Act, all cannabis product packaging and labelling will be strictly regulated by the Federal government and will be required to include specific information about the product and health warnings. 4 How is your Ministry tackling the growing

wildfires in B.C.?

Since 2004, over $81 million has been allocated to the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) to help local governments and First Nations significantly reduce wildfire risks around their communities. SWPI funding is administered by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. As of June 27, 2018, 337 Community Wildfire Protection Plans were completed by local governments and First Nations; another 54 are in progress. These plans identify areas at risk and prescribe fuel management projects to address those risks. Projects may include: conventional harvesting, prescribed

stopping wildfires and help those affected?

burning, improving the spacing between live trees; removing dead trees; and cleaning up low branches, needles and wood debris that could potentially fuel a fire. 5 Does B.C. have enough resources to handle the current wildfire crisis?

More than 1,600 firefighters and support staff are available for the 2018 wildfire season. The B.C. government is able to call on over 2,500 private-contractor firefighting resources and a multitude of contingency resources (including those in other provinces). In preparation for the 2018 wildfire season, the BC Wildfire Service procured contracts for additional eight-person, “Type 2” firefighting crews (comprised of up to 120 people) that meet the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre’s Interagency Exchange Standard. 6 Most wildfires are human-caused, how is the Ministry creating awareness on this issue?

Nearly half of all wildfires each year are caused by human activity, so the BC Wildfire Service puts a strong emphasis on wildfire prevention, public education and enforcement. Public outreach has been significantly expanded to make full use of online resources and social media tools. Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.

DARPAN

7 How can the public help in reducing or TM

As part of Budget 2018, the B.C. government is providing $72 million over three years, specifically to help with the recovery of communities and landscapes that were affected by the 2017 wildfires. This money will also help communities become better prepared for wildfires, through investments in wildfire risk reduction projects. This new funding is in addition to the annual allocation for direct firefighting costs, which is set at $63 million for 2018-19. As part of its preparations for the 2018 wildfire season, the BC Wildfire Service: reached out to stakeholders and partners to establish or strengthen key relationships with land managers, hired more fire information officers and hired more Type 2 firefighting crews. 9 Gang violence is a major concern, especially in Surrey, despite various policies and plans, why does it still exist?

People deserve to feel safe in their communities and gang and gun violence is absolutely unacceptable. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be solved overnight. Ending the gun violence that’s taking young lives and threatening bystanders will continue to require strong, strategic prevention and enforcement efforts – with a long-term commitment from all levels of government, police, teachers, parents and others. A strong response to ending the violence must also include communities and families coming together and finding solutions. Last fall, Premier Horgan announced $31.3 million over three years for critical enforcement and public safety initiatives. What new introductions are expected from your Ministry in the coming months?

10

The Ministry is busy working through the details of the upcoming cannabis legalization. It is a complex process and changes will take time. The date set by the federal government for cannabis legalization will just be the beginning of this project. In addition, activating certain intersection safety camera locations to ticket the fastest vehicles and increase road safety; changes to payday loans and cheque cashing that will make these products more affordable for British Columbians will take effect on September 1, 2018. Ministry staff continue to work on the next phase of the Consumer Financial Protection Plan; building on the results of the March 2018 survey related to the potential regulation of the live event ticket buying and selling sector, the Ministry is doing further research to help the Minister make an informed decision about what he would like to do on this topic.

I

n February of 2014, Jashaun Grewal was one of the many passionate participants at the Surrey Leadership Action Conference, also known as SLAC. His group had ‘Safety’ as the topic for their action project. By the time the event came to an end, Jashaun, a mere teenager, had already made Surrey’s youth safety his responsibility. That was the moment Surrey Youth Safety Council (SYSC) was conceived. The organization survived to be the fittest among all the action projects born during the SLAC. “We were the only action plan that actually came

in the second year of SFU’s business program. SYSC has now officially published its own website, where one can find links and information related to safety, bullying, substance abuse, and several other issues that need to be nipped in the bud. The end goal is to help spark an initiative among the youth to take over and push forward their ideas to building a safer place to live. On being asked what drove a 14-year-old (in 2014) to take this drastic a measure to curb crime in his city, the young leader says, “I could see kids near me being effected, shootings in my own neighborhood. Issues become more personal when instead of hearing it in the news; you see it in text messages. When rather than a third person telling you something, you hear it in person.” Today we consider some parts of Surrey to be safer than others, and some roads to be more frequented by crime than others. Jashaun tirelessly works to break this stigma and erase the divide. He believes it is just

DARPAN

TM

an attitude that will hold us back from any kind of progress. The 18-year-old had noticed the contrast in people’s behaviour when he moved out of his former neighbourhood. He had never been greeted ‘hello’ by a stranger on the street, and when that happened, it forced him to think how this simple word could be the starting point of a conversation and the building block of trust. “For me, this divide is just a stigma. I lived in that area [for] 15 years of my life. The crime is low-level; it’s people fighting over small things. The news is what makes it big. If a place is repeatedly termed ‘unsafe’, won’t people believe so? Instead of walking to the door knocking and seeing for themselves, they are already denying entering, without even approaching it,” points out the teenage entrepreneur, further adding, “The whole idea of safety begins with a community. Being able to trust each other is the key.” SYSC plans on holding workshops in colleges to learn from their most valuable and insightful resource: the youth

itself. He and Rochelle Prasad, another brilliant mind and also the co-founder of SYSC, believe that with the support of like-minded youth, they can reduce crime in Surrey. So has there been a decrease in crime since the start of their venture? “No, but I do see a change in attitude. People are trying to come together. They see the spark too,” answers Jashaun truthfully. Other than playing a crucial role in increasing awareness among the youth of Surrey and working towards reducing crime in the city, Jashaun creates content for social media, amusing videos, and inspirational and motivational speeches that further sheds light on the work the organization is involved in. Finding time is the toughest part of this young man’s day, “It is daunting. But when you love it, you always make time for it. Being able to follow your dreams is priceless. You can’t go wrong with it. I absolutely love what I do now. I like visualizing, not just on a computer screen, but being able to act it out.” Open doors, white boards, idea notes and no-desk spaces is Jashaun’s idea of a perfect workplace.

of Dhaliwal’s career. According to him, a three-hour show requires 10 times more prep than smaller segments. He has adapted well though, in large part due to his chemistry with his co-hosts. “I have a great rapport with my colleagues Perry and James from years ago that this has become very natural and we just love coming to work together.” Dhaliwal holds a significant distinction of being one of the top insiders for Vancouver Canucks news. He also breaks news for the BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps, but his primary work is within the National Hockey League (NHL) specifically with the Vancouver Canucks. Being an insider demands the ability to disseminate breaking news before anyone else. However, Dhaliwal emphasizes that just speed is not enough, “Accuracy is the most important thing. If you do not have good sources, then your information is useless. This business is about building strong relationships and exchanging help. It’s all about trust and if there’s no trust, it won’t work.” As mentioned before, Dhaliwal’s ascent to sports fame was not always easy. Though he battled through hardships and bad decisions, he wasn’t dejected. “You have to learn from your mistakes. If you’re not trying, you’re not making any mistakes.” As a strong proponent of self-improvement, Dhaliwal encourages young professionals to watch and learn to develop their understanding for the industry and that “taking progressive steps to improve your craft is instrumental to growing a career in this field.” For aspiring journalists and those who wish to get into radio, Dhaliwal has another key foundation everyone should focus on: writing. “You have to be able to write well. Writing is the number one skill to look for in this field and improving your writing skills will improve your career prospects,” advices the inspiring role model. Dhaliwal has a clear goal for what he wants to do in the future. He believes that he can go at least another five to 10 years doing what he is doing now. The love and passion he has for his job will not fade. When it is time to leave, he will ride off into the sunset having nothing short of a remarkable career to look back on.

Moving to the other side of the table definitely requires a different mindset. For the most part, you are still aiming to sound and present very professionally. what to ask candidates. Giving a few tips, Daya asserts, “You just have to be yourself. You may think your qualifications aren’t enough but everyone has something to bring to the table that others don’t.” She also specifies that “interpersonal skills separate you from the rest in interviews and curiosity is received very positively by interviewers.” Another strategy she recommends is to ask many questions and treat it as if you are interviewing the recruiter and the company. At the end of the day, career moves are among one of the biggest decisions we make aside from marriage, buying a house and having children, so when you are interviewing to make a move you want to show as much engagement in your own best interest as much as their interest in hiring you. Daya is currently a recruiter at Matchbox Consulting Group. She recruits some of the top talents in the engineering, technical and finance fields. Going forward, the young achiever hopes to complete her MBA while progressing in her career. However, she still wants to ensure that she will always volunteer. With a very diverse background and a strong work ethic to back it up, Daya will surely continue to progress in her career and in her volunteer engagement. “Getting involved in volunteer work through school or organizations is an incredibly rewarding experience. You will meet new people, make new friends and encounter tremendous experiences along the way,” she exclaims in conclusion.

As the second largest city in British Columbia, Surrey boasts a population of over 500,000, which continues to increase and is expected to surpass Vancouver as the largest city in the province by 2041. Undoubtedly, in a thriving, growing city such as Surrey, those holding the political reins hold utmost responsibility and power. In the upcoming Municipal Elections, Surrey’s citizens will

have the opportunity to voice their choice of six School Trustees, eight Councillors, and one Mayor. What stands unique to this year’s elections is a mayoral candidate, of South Asian descent, presenting a serious challenge to be the first South Asian mayor that Metro Vancouver has seen – four-term City Councillor, Tom Gill. Serving on the City Council since 2005 and raising a family of three children with his wife, the mayoral candidate and current Councillor brings perspective from both the

arena and the backstage. Gill has called Surrey home for the past 30 years and has seen the city blossom into a hub of potential and opportunities. With his experience and passion for the community, he has now taken on the challenge of running for the position of Mayor in Surrey’s 2018 Municipal Elections. DARPAN had a candid chat with Gill regarding his plans for Surrey and his views and solutions to some of the crucial issues the city is currently facing. As part of his platform, Gill clearly puts forth his intentions of recreating Surrey into a 21st Century city. Gone are the days when Surrey was considered merely a suburban city outside of Vancouver. Rather, the city is at the cusp of a transformation, where we are now imagining how the city can be redefined to engage the world in showing that we can do business here, while offering the best quality of life in

the world. According to Gill, our asset is our diversity, which can be used to provide a distinct advantage. Given that a significant portion of Surrey’s population is that of the younger fabric, he points out the importance of integrating technology – in both postsecondary and business settings – to create efficiencies and begin the shift away from the traditional construction and development industries upon which the city has depended. In this light, when asked about Surrey’s land development processes and the increasing concern of an unaffordable housing market, Gill does not shy away from accepting that the city does, indeed, have the highest new development cost charges. However, he maintains that the system is set up this way so that the tax base is not used to subsidize new developments, TM

Transportation 2 Robust System

After the implementation of the 10.5 kilometers LRT as part of the Surrey-Newton-Guildford Line, resources will be put towards funding and executing the construction of the remaining 140 kilometers of the new in-city transportation system.

3 New Developments

By creating partnerships between the City, developers and residents, measures will be taken to address issues such as supply as part of the housing crisis. In tandem will be the promotion of amenities and creative cultural structures such as stadiums, recreation centers and performing arts centers.

“I don’t want tax-paying residents to fund new development; I want developers to pay. It takes time because we need to get it right.” Moreover, rather than assuming developers make over-the-top profits, Gill urges citizens to consider that developers themselves face rising cost pressures from vendors of raw inputs such as lumber, drywall and steel, alongside an element of risk. Hence, there needs to be a partnership between residents, developers and the City in working together to address these issues. In fact, Gill repeatedly emphasizes the power of engaging the community in making decisions that impact the city. When speaking about the pressing issues of gang violence, crime and drug abuse, he outlines the need for community referendums that ask for citizens’ contributions. For instance, Gill brings attention

TM

to the existing government structure that is devoid of a local source of decision-making. While the municipal government can provide resources to the RCMP, the allocation of those resources is at the RCMP’s discretion. In the ongoing debate around the potential need for a municipal police force to tackle Surrey’s rising gang violence issues, Gill pushes a) robust cost-benefit analyses to determine whether we, as a community, are willing to bear the costs, and b) a community conversation on resizing our police force and questioning if we have enough members. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Gill speaks of an outcome-based approach in creating solutions, “I am comfortable

I am hoping people can reconcile with what I am offering.” making an investment, but I want to be able to go to the provincial government and provide proof that we have results.” Regardless, revamping the police force is not the sole solution. Gill envisions a different plan of implementation than seen before when it comes to the rising problem of gang activity. Historically, the municipal government has generally avoided entering areas that have not been its direct responsibility. However, given the severity of recent incidents, Gill wants to take a two-pronged approach centered around the pillars of intervention and prevention with a five-year commitment comprising of a plan worth $50 million dollars. A comprehensive plan for kids that need assistance will be put together through a focused intervention strategy surrounding

initiatives that involve critical counselling and parental education. Further, the provincial and federal government will be asked for assistance towards prevention, a vital component of which involves banning handguns and automatic weapons – a position that Gill firmly and clearly holds. Given that the number of legal firearms sold has essentially doubled in the last year in Canada, prohibiting the private sale of firearms can make an immensely positive impact according to Gill. With 200-300 firearm-related homicides per year in a country of 36 million, he shines the spotlight onto successful examples in Australia, Japan and the UK, where public opinion has changed given the significantly noteworthy decreases in firearm-related homicides and suicides. Through such initiatives, government involvement can create direct impact on the quality of life that residents enjoy in the city by creating a crimefree, safe environment. As a matter of fact, an

example of successful government intervention is Surrey’s bustling downtown core. Although many still do not recognize the success, Surrey’s Whalley area has cleaned up and taken off over the past few years as incredible investments have been made. Gill shares his take on expediating and speeding up the process of building a healthy downtown core for the city, “We’ve got 21,000 residential units to be built in the downtown of Surrey. Complementing that development with activity is key – be it increased cultural-based programs or business-related head office relocations. It’s important to understand that at one time, everyone had to go to Downtown Vancouver to work. Now, the culture shift is that we want people to work, live and play in Surrey.” To make this possible, Gill provides his stance on building a robust transit system that allows for ease of transportation within Surrey. In support of the Surrey Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, he talks of a changing ridership that cannot be fully serviced through the SkyTrain, “The LRT is widely misunderstood. People need to understand that there will be

densities entirely along the LRT line, not at stops. LRT stops will be at 800 meters distances, whereas SkyTrain stops can be two to three kilometers in distance. Imagine the ease of accessibility for seniors with no staircases to climb and increased comfort for parents with strollers.” To combat potential issues with traffic, it will be ensured that roads are not compromised by employing at least two lanes of traffic, great separation and effective curving to prevent accidents. With five million anticipated users of the Surrey-Newton-Guildford line phase of the project alone, Gill stands in favour of implementing the 150-kilometer rail. He reminds the public that changing the line into a SkyTrain translates to an additional billion dollars, which will close the doors for future funds from the provincial or federal governments for the next decade, “The numbers simply do not work when it comes to the SkyTrain. Practically a SkyTrain itself on the ground, the LRT is a high caliber and high-quality technology that permits us to be able to modify the transportation source for our community.” Gill’s perspective on implementing the LRT in Surrey is in line with creating culture and an entertainment district within the city, so that citizens are no longer going to Downtown Vancouver for experiences. According to him, by having a matrix to get around the city without relying on vehicles, we can truly pave the way towards a future that is going to be superior than any other place. Be it our recreation center amenities, pools, ice rinks, or gymnasiums, Gill and his team at Surrey First want to give these structures culture and place emphasis on architectural design, “Civic pride has been lacking in the past, but we are now emerging as leaders. We want people to be wowed.” When it comes to creating these changes, Gill is confident that his team will deliver, “When considering diversity, we looked at gender, education and various other characteristics to put together a team. I am proud to say that each member brings a high level of education and experience to the table. It took me some time to find the right people, but the team is going to be by far the most sophisticated one ever presented.” The motivated group of young, energetic individuals is truly reflective of the diverse cityscape of Surrey. When asked what his coping mechanism is when challenges arise, Gill says that he does not let the attempts of discouragement take charge. Alluding to the recent instance in which malicious flyers and damaging rumors were dispersed around the community, he holds that others’ lack of integrity is a concern, but will not put him down, “I’ve gone through 12 years without a blemish. I believe that

there are individuals out there who were trying to tarnish that image, but this community is above that and people are smart. I am hoping people can reconcile with what I am offering.” Gill shares that one of the most important things he has learned so far is that many professionals shy away from running for office; the impact of social backlash and platforms such as social media cannot be underestimated as they do have a profound impact. Yet, Gill stays dedicated to making Surrey the best city in North America, “I am so committed that I’m turning a blind eye to individuals who have caused this grief. It’s important to make changes and stand firm to show the community that despite these challenges, I am going to march on.” Although Surrey is home to a predominantly South Asian population, the chair of the mayor has still not seated a leader of South Asian descent. Just as Harjit Singh Sajjan made his mark by becoming Canada’s first Sikh Minister of Defense, Jagmeet Singh became the leader of the NDP Party, and Ujjal Dosanjh was the first Indo-Canadian premier of B.C., the upcoming Municipal Election in Surrey can potentially write history in similar light. In steering the direction of the future, the power lies – quite literally – in the hands of the voter, you. Awareness and education is just the beginning. By making an informed decision and taking the time to cast our votes to whichever candidate we deem fit, we can and must take action. Until then, the most-awaited question of the 2018 Municipal Election lingers on: Is Surrey ready for her first-ever South Asian mayor?

BUILDING A CAREER SUPPORTING YOUTH Gursimran Mann’s change of heart put her on a path to helping others By Sarah Rossi

18050

ursimran Mann thought Douglas College would be a twoyear pit stop on her way to university. But after discovering a program she loved, everything changed. Now, the former psychology student is completing her Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care (CYC) at Douglas, and has already landed a job. “When I started at Douglas, I planned to become a clinical counsellor, but then I started to volunteer more with youth and children, and I had a change of heart,” she says. “I realized I wanted to pursue a career focusing on youth.” The CYC program prepares graduates for careers working with youth in a variety of settings, including front-line positions with addiction services, youth outreach and in schools. Virtually 100 percent of CYC grads find work within three months of receiving their credential. Gursimran, though still a student, is already working with the City of Surrey, where she is part of an outreach team that connects youth

with services the city offers, as well as supervising youth drop-in programs at recreation centres. Her new job is the perfect place to apply the skills she learned during her CYC work placements at an elementary school, as well as at DIVERSEcity Community Resource Society, where she helped facilitate spring-break camps for youth that included activities such as yoga – a personal favourite of Gursimran’s. During her placements, she worked with kids every day, gaining valuable experience and connections in her field. She says Douglas has been key in helping her reach her goals. “The CYC program gave me the knowledge to work with youth in a variety of settings,” she says. “And my practicum experience was incredibly helpful. I learned so much at my placements and gained a wealth of hands-on experience.” Once she has her degree, Gursimran plans to get her Master’s Degree in Counselling at Simon Fraser University or the University of Victoria.

medicine to those that are in need. “To attain this objective, we daily visit the Mandir, Mosque and Church during 10:004:00pm and interact with beggars, carry out medical check-up and [provide] all other related medical services,” he says. For Dr. Abhijit, this is a way of giving back to a section of society that supported him when he was unemployed and broke. Dr. Abhijit explains that during a phase in his life when he was not earning and struggling to survive without food, a senior couple that was also homeless and surviving off of financial donations, started helping him. This couple would keep a share of food for him and also lend any money that they could whenever he needed any. Not only did they provide material help, but also supported him emotionally. Now that he can, Dr. Abhijit is extending his support to those who are most neglected and in need of crucial support. Under Doctor for Beggars, Dr. Abhijit not only assists with medical and emotional support, but also provides counselling to the homeless seniors so that they can start their own businesses.

“We create [a] relationship with them as their family member. Once we build the rapport with them, we start counselling and convincing them to leave this begging trade,” Dr. Abhijit says and adds, “We are proud to say that since April 2017, we have supported 42 elder beggars to leave [the] begging trade.” This was part of his initiative called, Beggars to Entrepreneurs. A total of 761 homeless individuals registered with Dr. Abhijit are receiving medical support. “But, provision of health care is not our objective, our mission is to reach up to their heart.... by using this path.” In addition, he says their goal is to make these individuals self-sufficient. A total of 101 cataract operations have been conducted by Dr. Abhijit and his wife. When medical care cannot be provided on the road, Dr. Abhijit relocates them to a public or private hospital. Dr. Manisha Sonawane plays a crucial role in the operation of the organization. While Dr. Abhijit dedicates his daily routine to the service of those that are not financially independent, his wife operates a clinic where a majority of their financial support comes from. “People ask us, how we survive. The answer is, we have one small clinic,” says Dr. Abhijit. His wife runs the clinic during the day while he joins in later during the evening. “The income we are getting, we use 60 percent for ourselves and 30 percent for our beggar family, though it is not sufficient for us and for them, we do manage somehow with [the] blessings and small donations of society.” Apart from running his organization, Doctor for Beggars, Dr. Abhijit is also focusing on Beggars to Entrepreneurs so that more individuals can become financially independent. In a recent interview with an Indian media house, he mentioned, “I urge everybody to treat these people as human beings and not to give them money as that way they are making them dependent on them. They should instead help them find work.” To support Dr. Abhijit and Dr. Manisha Sonawane’s intitiative, visit: www.SohamTrust.com

How to get your child to do homework without a fight

BY CAROL TUTTLE

MAKING HOMEWORK

FUN

W

hen it comes to your child’s homework, do you beg, plead or bribe? Do you threaten consequences? You can make homework easier for both you and your children with some simple tips that honour their natural energy. Every child has a dominant Energy Type that determines the way they move through life. It affects everything they do – playing, talking, eating, sleeping. And yes, it even shows up in the way they do homework! Ready to take the struggle out of homework? Here are homework tips for the four Types of children:

Type 1:

The Fun-loving Child Carol Tuttle is the CEO of Live Your Truth, LLC and author of the best-selling parenting book, The Child Whisperer: the Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, Cooperative Children, which has sold over 75,000 copies worldwide. She also hosts an immensely popular parenting podcast, that hits weekly on important parenting issues commonly experienced by families of all backgrounds. These bright-minded children think quickly and like to move. Their thought process works like snapshots of ideas, so engaging in a linear experience can be challenging for them.

Pre-homework playtime If your child attends a traditional school, they need time to do

something light and free before jumping into homework. Let them come up with ideas of what they’ll do – that will give them something to look forward to during the structured experience of school.

Homework jumping Allow them to jump from one activity to another. That’s how their brain works anyway. Extra movement of things going on in the background is actually helpful for them because it allows them to disconnect from their homework and then connect again.

Type 3:

The Determined Child These active children move swiftly and like getting things done. Their natural speed can be a challenge when it comes to detailed tasks they feel are tedious or pointless.

Type 2:

The Sensitive Child These subtle children work methodically and are great with details. They are naturally quieter, so speaking up about what they might need can be a challenge for them.

Planned routine (one that they plan) These children do best when they have a plan that they have made themselves. Which steps will they follow to get things done? You can ask this very young (five or six years old) as Type 2 children are already thinking this way.

Invitation to connect Type 2 children often want their parents to recognize the work they’re doing without knowing how to ask for it. Take a second to connect with them while they’re working and invite them to share with you.

Set the intention that you and your child are experiencing ease and enjoyment as you support them in their homework.

These children will do homework when they see the point. If they don’t see it, they’ll try to get around it somehow. They’ll pick the grade they want and do as much as they have to do to get it done. Help them see the practical purpose.

Make homework part of the extracurricular fund Money is a great motivator in the Type 3 world. If you plan to pay for extracurricular activities, you could attach a money value to finishing homework and that money goes to a sport or lesson they really want. You’ll be spending the money anyway and they’ll enjoy the feeling of accomplishment as they work toward an activity they really want.

The More Serious Child These focused children are self-motivated. But if they’re not respected for who they are at school, they’ll buck the system. It will look like rebellion, but it’s really just their attempt to stay true to their nature.

The respectful phrase These children feel offended when you tell them what to do because they’re aware of their responsibilities. Try this phrase: “Looks like you’re doing great. Let me know if you need help.” Let them come to you, which they will, if they think they need help.

Currently working in the industry with a Masters in Human Resources, Prateek Kaur adds, “Firms today value a diverse culture as it brings unexplored perspectives to the forefront. Learning different ways of working and knowing how to deal with different people while remaining professional in the workplace puts you a step ahead.” Undoubtedly, another apparent trend is the prevalence of employment in the field of technology. As Purewal puts it, “The growth of the I.T market isn’t going to slow down. In fact, we are moving more and more towards technology, reducing the number of physical people required in the workforce, but we still need people to program, maintain and develop the I.T systems both at the front and back end.” As a result, programming experience will be highly valued in the future. However, the power of trade cannot be undermined either, as professionals such as carpenters, plumbers and electricians will be in high demand given the fast-paced housing boom. throughout their student life. will also continue to thrive due to ongoing social needs. Taking a step back considering the aforementioned trends, how can students today leverage this information to their benefit? The key lies in involvement! Even the most highly regarded companies today do not solely place weight on academic performance. Katy Peng, a Human Resources student at Simon Fraser University with multiple co-op experiences in the industry, reveals, “Hiring usually depends on the type of position and the type of skills required. Companies will usually look relevant [at] experiences that may give the applicant transferable skills. Tailoring resumes to a position can help make things easier to find for recruiters, which could increase the chances of the recruiter being interested in you.” In other words, a 4.0 GPA or ‘straight A’s’ are not enough to land a position; self-confidence, the ability to lead and learn, and passion are just as important. These experiences are attainable through various activities that students can partake in throughout their student life. A recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business explains, “When it comes down to it, there are many people competing for the same job with an almost identical education. Experience is what sets each individual apart, and demonstrates what types of skills a person can bring to the job. Experience doesn’t have to just be paid work experience, but can also be volunteer work, involvement in school clubs, and any self-directed work and learning that one would deem as valuable to have.” Preparation is half the victory. That said, to be successful, there is also a need for one to truly enjoy the job that they choose. From a social standpoint, we must recognize that employment does exist outside of the traditionally sought-after titles of doctors, engineers and

lawyers. Rather than forcing children to pursue a certain educational degree, parents should let them find their own path – sometimes through trial and error.

Purewal shares his top three tips for young adults entering the working world:

1

Take your time in working out who you want to be when you’re older. To rush through college, university or a trade program, too quickly, means you haven’t really had a chance to enjoy that important part of life. You’re possibly going to be working for 50 years, so if you study for another two, it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

2

Give yourself permission to change your mind – be this with the direction of the course you study and even the job that you do. It’s true that you sometimes need to do something you don’t like to work out what you do like.

3

Have as many experiences as you can overseas! Travel broadens the mind and you might even find your passion far from home. Thinking about the future can be stressful, especially amidst the changing work landscape propelled by the Internet revolution. Regardless, the opportunities are endless. By getting involved early on to build your professional self and taking the leap to pursue what you are genuinely passionate about, the journey to the jobs of tomorrow starts now.

For several years, BC has mulled over allowing popular companies such as Uber or Lyft into our current transportation system, as taxi or other public transportation is simply not meeting the needs of the public. As taxis become more expensive and less reliable, people are opting for alternatives which will

The idea of having service just minutes from wherever you are, and being given the power to choose the car size, wait time and price of your ride is very appealing. Companies such as Lyft are already looking forward to working with Vancouver. Aaron Zifkin, managing director of Canada for Lyft, believes that “Vancouver is a great fit for Lyft, and we are working with the BC Government to bring ridesharing to the province as soon as possible.” He goes on

That is why we are taking the first steps in our action plan to bring ridesharing to BC,” said the statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. However, the Ministry responds by saying, “We acknowledge that it is taking longer than anticipated to create the regulatory structure and insurance that will allow ridesharing companies such as Uber and Lyft to enter the BC market. [However], we have a responsibility to get things done right.” Some of the things on their agenda include passing legislation this Fall, which would encompass regulations on consumer safety, boundaries, streamlining license applications for drivers, and overall passenger safety by both the vehicle and the driver.

While the struggle for when and how to pass ridesharing regulations continues, there are those who do not believe in the concept altogether. Many people may agree that BC’s current options for taxi service and public transport are simply not enough to meet the demands of growing cities such as Metro Vancouver, but some believe that ridesharing may not be the correct solution. For instance, a website called, Who’s Driving You, has been keeping track of all news reports involving assaults, attacks or other mishaps with Uber and Lyft. This brings us to a very important question: How exactly will these companies promote safety in our city? Now, it cannot go unnoted that taxis around Vancouver and the rest of the province have had their own fair share of unsafe encounters, but if additional companies are introduced, the possibilities of more unsafe acts happening through transportation is bound to increase. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure does understand this dilemma, and thus reassures us by saying, “We are also putting 500 more taxis on the streets (300 in Metro Vancouver and 200 to the rest of the province). Our approach will modernize the taxi industry and help meet current demand, while opening the door to other vehicles for hire – so people can move around how they want, when they want, safely.” With a similar end goal of providing an integrative transportation structure, a unique and upcoming alternative has been presented by a company called Kater, founded by Monark Group and based in South Surrey, BC. “Kater is looking to unite with people and work in collaboration with the BC Taxi Association (BCTA) and Vancouver Taxi Association (VTA) to provide a solution where everyone is happy and the province is not ending up with extra congestion on the road,” says Operations Manager Mandi Mangat. To come up with an idea, the team at Kater worked tirelessly to conduct research and genuinely understand the implications of existing rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft. “We found that they have a set of issues of their

own that come forth once these companies are introduced to the public system, such as strikes, shortage of jobs for the taxi industry, and many more, which we do not think makes them as viable of an option as something that can take everyone’s needs into consideration while producing a local solution, points out Mangat. For instance, places such as London and New York have had many negative impacts on their general public when it came to Uber or Lyft, such as an increase of traffic and wait times rather than the decrease that was expected. Kater is working to pass a regulation which will allow them to offer a comprehensive app that will integrate many of the local transportation options such as taxis, multiple ridesharing options, and will even have public bus and skytrain schedules so that people are able to compare their options before choosing the right one for them. With their focus being customer service and with the thorough investigation on taxis and other transportation methods, Mandi is confident that despite their team being “a third party company coming in with a new concept, the public will eventually realize the amount of effort that has been put in to research all of the possible implications of different methods, and how this solution is fitting to suit everyone’s needs. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s commitment to meeting the needs of both worlds, along with companies such as Kater give us a ray of hope. They show us that we can approach the issue of transportation as a united front, and be mindful of bringing forth a solution which will both benefit the economy and the people waiting to make use of the new resources that will be available to them.

RHA MA750 Wireless Headphones Sony, Bose, Sennheiser. These are a trio of well-known brands that usually come to mind when talking about premium sound products. Today we’re here to introduce RHA, an independent audio company founded in 2011 and based in Glasgow, UK, specializing in beautifully crafted, high quality and high tech in-ear headphones.

The earbuds fit comfortably and securely, thanks to flexible hooks that loop around the back of the ear. The connecting band rests in an ergonomic fashion around your neck and provides a bit of

Although not noise-cancelling, the 750s do utilize passive noise isolation through a unique driver housing shape, dubbed Aerophonic, helping remove unwanted distortions and reverberations and designed specifically for the MA series. The RHA MA750 is listed at $229.99 and can be found at Canadian retailers such as Best Buy and Staples.

SureCall Fusion2Go 3.0 In today’s connected world, it means students don’t have to be sitting at the kitchen table or the library to get stuff done – you can do some research or submit an assignment even while riding in a car. However, almost anything Internet-related requires a strong cell signal, and we’ve all experienced lag or data blackouts while out and about. Californiaheadquartered SureCall is a leader in cell phone signal boosting equipment and has just launched the Fusion2Go 3.0, a voice, text and 4G LTE mobile cellular signal booster made for vehicles. The technology sounds complicated but installation is a breeze. Basically, how the unit works is the outer antenna collects and then relays a signal from the cell tower to the booster, which in turn amplifies the signal sending it to the patch antenna in the cabin. From there, the signal is rebroadcast to all nearby mobile devices. Conversely, any outgoing signals are amplified back to the tower. As a result, the chance of having those important phone calls dropped or missed completely are greatly reduced, not to mention 4G LTE data transmission reliability being greatly improved. All Canadian carriers are supported, i.e. Rogers, Bell, Telus and Sasktel. The SureCall Fusion2Go 3.0 is sold at the Source for $599.99.

s the summer winds come to an end and our focus shifts from fun in the sun to getting back to the grind, it is the perfect time to also shift our thinking about how we protect our eyes. In the summer months, we are all aware that UV rays from sunlight can be harmful to our eyes, so we put on our favourite pair of stylish shades and head out into the world knowing that we’re doing the right thing for our eye health (while also looking great, of course). But, as the seasons change and we all head back to school and work, we will be spending far less time outdoors and far more time being exposed to a different type of light that can also be detrimental to our eyes. The screens on all of the digital devices we commonly use throughout our day (phones, tablets, computers or flat screen TVs) emit a type of high energy light which is often referred to as blue light. High energy blue light is actually all around us and the largest source of it

TM

FROM

Light

is sunlight. In fact, because these shortwavelength rays scatter more easily when they travel through air and water, blue light is actually what makes the sky look blue. Blue light is also quite essential to our health. Studies have shown that exposure to blue light is important in regulating our circadian rhythm (our wake and sleep cycle). In this way, it helps boost alertness, helps cognitive ability, and elevates mood.

Because high energy light scatters more easily than other visible light, it is not as easily focused by our eyes. This can lead to digital eye strain, which can result in fatigue, blurred vision, and headaches. However, our use of computers and digital devices has brought us much closer to artificial sources of blue light, and the number of hours we spend exposed to blue light on a daily basis make it a true concern for our health and wellbeing. From a visual comfort perspective, blue light is quite disruptive. Because high energy light scatters more easily than other visible light, it is not as easily focused by our eyes. This can lead to digital eye strain, which can result in fatigue, blurred vision, and headaches. The effects of blue light on our health can be wide-ranging. The primary concern, as researchers at Harvard and many other institutions have shown, is that increased exposure to blue light in the evening can cause lack of sleep, which can ultimately increase the risk for significant health concerns such as depression, diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

What can we do? With our work and personal lives progressively becoming more immersed in the digital world, it

is hard to recommend a complete ban on digital devices. However, the simplest thing we can do to improve our visual outcome is to decrease unnecessary screen time. This step is particularly important for the younger generation. The Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society recently released a joint statement recommending no more than two hours of recreational screen time for children aged five to 18. For those of us who have no choice but to spend time in front of screens, there are ways through which we can more actively protect our eyes against the harmful effects of blue light. Advances in optical lenses have provided a great new option to help us literally filter out the high energy light that would otherwise penetrate the front of our eyes and potentially result in digital eye strain. These lenses, which we generally refer to as blue-blocking or blue-filtering lenses, are a great option for anyone (young or old) who spends time in front of screens. These lenses can be used in prescription glasses or even as non-prescription computer glasses and are an easy way to protect your eyes from the effects of high energy light. As we continue to integrate digital devices into various facets of our lives, it is vital to remember the potential effects these new technologies can have on our health. Protecting our eyes today can allow us to preserve our vision in the future.

Identify your triggers

Becoming overwhelmed is a gradual state. From overcommitment to just plain spreading yourself too thin, coping with an overwhelming feeling starts with identifying the triggers of your negative feelings. Know that there is a course of action you follow to end up being overwhelmed. There is also an alternative course of action you follow to end up at peace.

2 Here are seven tips for recognizing the signs and getting over being overwhelmed.

SIGNS

THAT YOU ARE

It may be a project that spun out of control, or a relationship that seems to be just too much to handle. Whatever the case, don’t be afraid to just step away for a little while. A little distance allows you to clear your mind and see the big picture with more clarity. Revisiting the situation lets you determine if the stress of it all is worth the outcome.

Step away from the stimuli

Incorporate breaks into your routines

More often than not feelings of being overwhelmed come from continuous exposure to a stressor. Be sure to include breaks in your work schedule no matter how busy you are to allow for the tension to subside. There is nothing wrong with working hard, but remember to leave time for play, too. Prioritizing play is important for your brain, body and soul to enjoy the work you are doing.

Check in with your health

Your health is a perfect indicator of how you handle stress and your lifestyle. When too much anxiety is present, your health suffers. Don’t forget to get enough sleep, and eat a healthy and diverse diet to keep negative feelings at bay. Try and eliminate sugar and processed foods and focus on consuming more fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins into your diet. Don’t forget to get enough exercise each day as well.

5

Deep breathing is a good start

You may be familiar with the old adage of counting to 10 when you feel overly stressed and anxious. This may be a more common tactic for children to calm down, but it still works its magic on adults too. If anxiety is growing and you can feel a negative energy building, don’t hesitate to just close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out a few times. The key is to breathe in through the diaphragm (stomach area) and slowly out through the mouth. Something this simple allows you to calm yourself from the spiral of negativity, and get back to a more balanced state of mind.

As more and more people become victims of chronic illness and considering the incline of chronic disease in Western society, it is evident that change is needed. The first step towards such a change is awareness. The most mundane dishes that we tend to overlook on the dinner table can add up to be a detriment

over time. According to Fraser Health, a filled bowl of Dal Makhni, Malai Kofta, or Palak Paneer can have between three to seven tablespoons of fat. Once we begin to inform ourselves and question the contents of our food, homemakers can take small steps towards creating a healthier dinner plate. Just by making small changes, a big difference can be seen in the way we feel. Starting today, you can swap the bowl of candies on the center table with a tray of

dry fruit. Rather than serving soda or pop at a birthday party, start serving juices. Dessert after dinner does not always have to be cakes, but can also be replaced with fruit. Gill suggests seasoning dishes with authentic spices and seasonings like rosemary, sea salt, turmeric, nutmeg, or oregano, which not only make meals more delicious, but are loaded with antioxidants as well as tons of antiinflammatory properties. Moreover, choosing better fats for cooking like grapeseed oil, avocado oil, olive oil rather than trans fats like margarine, which are not readily broken down by the body, can make a significant difference. Such changes build up to impact the community at large, as the entire family tends to eat what is made in the kitchen. WE WORK WITH YOU NOT JUST FOR YOU! Health and Registered Dietician, Nazima Qureshi proposes, “Get your children involved in the kitchen by asking them to do simple tasks. When children participate in food prep, they are more likely to try the food.” She goes on to reveal her top three tips for creating change in the kitchen for a healthier lifestyle:

AAA REALTY INC.

|

Increase veggies and aim for half a plate at lunch and dinner. You can have a mix of cooked veggies and raw veggies (salads).

| |

Swap white flour with whole wheat and whole grain products.

Decrease the amount of oil used by using non-stick pans and avoid adding extra oil at the end of cooking. Of course, creating change comes with challenges. For many, healthy eating appears to be a time-consuming task. While it takes time to implement a healthy lifestyle, think of it as an investment. Through a nutritionally-blossoming diet today, you will save thousands of dollars in medical treatments tomorrow – not just for yourself, but also your loved ones. Be it through creating your own vegetable garden in the backyard or changing what you put on the grocery shopping list, take charge of your health. Needless to say, when one’s well-being is compromised, all other activities become futile and meaningless. If you are what you eat, the choice of who you will become is in your hands!

• Ladle a bit of the egg mixture to the warm chocolate mixture and whisk quickly so that the eggs don’t cook. Continue adding egg mixture and whisking until about one-third of it is incorporated into the chocolate mixture. Then pour the chocolate mixture back into the larger bowl containing the remaining eggs, and stir to combine. • Pour batter into muffin tin, filling each tin halfway. Bake 15–20 minutes. Cakes should be light and dry on the outside (with cracks on top) and dense and moist on the inside.

• Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin or use foil cupcake liners in the tin.

• Let cakes cool to touch or chill in the fridge before serving. Add powdered sugar and fresh berries, if desired.

• Pour water in bottom half of a double boiler, or fill a small saucepan halfway with water. Bring to a gentle boil.

NOTE: If you don’t have a double boiler, a metal bowl that is big enough to rest on top of your saucepan will do just fine.

• Into top of double boiler or metal bowl in sauce pan (see note), add chocolate chips, butter, and liquor. When the chocolate and butter begin to melt, blend thoroughly. It should have an even, shiny finish. Remove from heat.

• Sprinkle of cayenne pepper

EASY ALTERNATIVES WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE FITNESS EQUIPMENT

1

Head outdoors and see what nature has to offer

Go natural and make the great outdoors your gym. Increase the intensity of your cardio by running over sand or rough, uneven terrain. Get strength and core training using rocks, driftwood and logs. Use tree branches for pullups, and stumps or longs for box jumps.

BY NICK HILDEN

I

2

deally, we’d all have access to top of the line gyms stocked with the latest equipment, but that’s not always going to be the case. Whether you’re travelling, don’t have a gym membership, or are trying to get a solid workout at home or in a gym with limited gear, sometimes you have to come up with creative alternatives. Here are a few things you can do to work-around fitness equipment limitations.

CREATIVE

WAYS TO

STAY FIT

Look for alternatives

If you find yourself at a gym that doesn’t offer a particular piece of equipment that you prefer, get creative with your alternatives. Or sometimes a gym will have what you’re looking for, but someone else is using it and you don’t want to wait – find a way to get what you need from a different piece of gear. For example, I’m a huge fan of doing T-bar rows for my back, but a lot of gyms don’t offer a proper T-bar row tool. If I find myself in this situation, I simply take a barbell and jam one end against a corner of the wall, load up the other end with weight, then stand with it between my legs, sling a cable-row handle underneath, and go through the motion. Or say you want to do cable-flys but the cable rack is packed? Switch up for dumbbell flys. Etc. etc. As an added bonus, by being forced to find alternatives you also add variance to your routine, which works out new muscles and helps to deliver more comprehensive results.

3

Go slow and go long with bodyweight

For some fitness enthusiasts, bodyweight exercises can become frustrating because at a certain point they seem to lose their challenge. The solution – perform bodyweight motions slowly using a high degree of mindmuscle connection, and do more reps. Go through each motion at a reduced pace so that you not only increase the time under tension for each muscle, but also get the chance to focus on making sure you’re really using the muscle group you’re trying to target. And every time you go through your bodyweight routine, add a few more reps to each set. Even if you’re only increasing by two to three reps, it will add up.

Load up with water

And I’m not talking about hydration. Well, it’s important to stay hydrated too, but at the moment I’m recommending water for another of its properties: its weight. Water bottles of assorted sizes can be a great way to add weight to a workout. If pushups or squats are feeling too easy, for example, load up a backpack with water bottles and go to it. A couple 1,000 milliliters of water equals roughly 10 kilograms of weight, which is more than enough to add some difficulty to your sets. Essentially, you can use water bottles exactly like dumbbells. And the kind with handles around the mouth can be used like kettlebells. These will provide a variety of weighted workout opportunities.

Beauty Meets

Victoria dermatologist Dr. Mark Lupin has been on the forefront of testing and working with many of the contemporary minimally or non-invasive beauty and anti-aging treatments.

impled thighs and buttocks. Crow’s feet. Turkey neck. Clearly these aren’t ingredients for a bizarre dinner entree but rather names attached to particular physical flaws. Be it from the natural aging process, or a genetic predisposition for certain skin issues, most people have something about their appearance they’d like to improve or eliminate – something a drugstore cream won’t solve. That’s where aesthetic medical treatments come in. Decades back, the most effective options for beating back the signs of aging was invasive surgery requiring a risky general anaesthetic, and weeks of recovery.

Advances in aesthetic treatments means that skin can be tightened, wrinkles smoothed, hyperpigmentation diminished, and unwanted fat eliminated – all without a scalpel. Victoria dermatologist Dr. Mark Lupin has been on the forefront of testing and working with many of the contemporary minimally or non-invasive beauty and anti-aging treatments. The first step, advises Dr. Lupin, when considering a treatment is to consult with a medical doctor. “It is essential to see a dermatologist knowledgeable in treatments that you may be interested in exploring,” Lupin says. Dr. Frances Jang, at Dermapure Skinworks in Vancouver, concurs adding that “before any treatment, the doctor should assess your area of concern and offer you a systematic approach to get to your goal.” At that time, she says, “the

doctor will also outline the risks and benefits.” Though risks are far lower than that in invasive surgery, there are always possible complications, which is why it’s imperative to see a physician. “All side effects are addressed directly in consultation prior to undergoing any procedure,” says Dr. Lupin. And the dermatologist will also advise the patient on the realistic outcome of the procedure. Some people can expect better results depending on the severity of the problem or even their age. Cellfina, which treats cellulite on the buttocks and thighs, is limited to candidates between the ages of 20 to 60, who have a stable weight and no apparent loose skin. Conversely, advancements in laser technology have produced machines that are capable of treating a wider range of skin problems like the Starwalker laser recently available in Canada. “A remarkable laser system that can help my patients by treating many conditions at once, such as hyperpigmentation and red spider veins, while also having ability to tone the skin and treat a broad range of skin types from fair to dark. It is also the latest advance in tattoo removal technologies,” Lupin says about the Starwalker. DARPAN asked Dr. Jang and Dr. Lupin to discuss which innovative solutions to aging or beauty dilemmas most intrigued them:

Some aesthetic concerns require more than a sheet mask or a rich night cream. A visit to the dermatologist could offer a more effective solution.

Cellfina What it is: This treatment is a proven long-term solution to cellulite that actually works, says Dr. Lupin “It localizes discrete dimpled areas on the buttocks and thighs and immediately releases the tethered bands that are the root cause of cellulite. Four-year follow-up data confirm this is a permanent effect.” According to the Cellfina System website, it “treats the primary structural cause of cellulite – the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. These tight bands pull down the skin, creating the puckering you see on the surface of the skin.” The treatment releases the bands which then allows the skin to smooth out. The company says that the procedure “relies on a minimally invasive, small needle-sized device to treat the cellulite-causing bands just beneath the surface of the skin.” Local anesthetic is used.

Starwalker Laser What it is: This advanced laser technology can target and eliminate tattoos, unwanted hair, birthmarks, spider veins, wrinkles, acne and acne scars while not damaging surrounding skin. Fontona’s website, the company producing the machine, describes it as “third-generation ASP [Adaptive Structured Pulse] technology for ultimate precision, efficacy and safety of treatments.”

Pros: Results can be noticeable as early as three days.

Pros: As Dr. Lupin said, the revolutionary advances here are that it can treat a number of conditions at once and works well on a range of skin tones.

Cons: There is some downtime. Recovery can be painful and sore when touched or pressure is applied. Results are not permanent – lasting up to three years.

Cons: Not a lot of independent feedback is available as it was only recently approved by the FDA and Health Canada. As the treatment is very precise and doesn’t damage surrounding tissue, side effects are reportedly minimal or non-existent.

Cost: Starting from $4,500.

miraDry What it is: Having written about the treatment and involved in the early development of miraDry in North America, Dr. Lupin says, “I am excited that we can now treat anyone who is bothered by underarm sweating.” According to the miraDry website, “the system uses energy that targets and destroys the sweat and odour glands in your underarm.” A localized anesthetic is applied before a small hand-held device delivers the energy to the glands. Pros: Permanently sweat-free underarms. Takes only one to two treatments. Cons: Can produce some swelling, soreness, tingling or numbness for weeks after treatment. No permanent side effects reported to date. Cost: Starting from $1,995.

Skin Hydration using Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injections

Coolsculpting What it is: Dr. Lupin describes Coolsculpting as the “most effective non-invasive method for sculpting body contours by removing fat non-invasively. We also use this to help define the jawline by reducing fullness under the chin and providing some gentle tightening.” It also targets stubborn fat deposits on the abdomen, flank, upper arm, inner thigh, outer thigh, back and chest. The simple explanation is it destroys fat by freezing it. The procedure can be uncomfortable but not painful.

Cons: Can produce swelling and a tingling discomfort for a couple of weeks. It can take more than one treatment, making it expensive. Cost: Starting from $800 per treatment.

Photos: iStock, Images for representation only

Pros: Results are permanent and noticeable in a matter of weeks and continue to improve over the next few months. No downtime.

Dr. Frances Jang, at Dermapure Skinworks in Vancouver, concurs adding that “before any treatment, the doctor should assess your area of concern and offer you a systematic approach to get to your goal.”

94

What it is: Dr. Jang says these injections are “a game changer and beyond the skin care we currently know. This innovative treatment involves multiple injections of HA in the middle layers of the dermis to nourish it from the inside out. It delivers improvements in skin smoothness, hydration and elasticity and designed to last for up to nine months with just one treatment. It can be used to treat the face, neck, décolletage and hands.” They’re known by brand names such as Juvederm and Restylane. Pros: No downtime and immediate results. Can last up to nine months. Cons: If injections are overdone, it’s obvious and unnatural looking. Determine if the physician aims for natural not “done” results. Check before and after photos. Cost: Starting at $500 a syringe. DR. FRANCES JANG, DERMAPURE SKINWORKS

Ultherapy What it is: Dr. Jang describes the treatment as using “time-tested ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin naturally … [it] stimulates collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s foundational layer typically addressed in cosmetic surgery – without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Unlike lasers, radio frequency, surgery and other technologies, Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths and the right temperature. This energy triggers a natural response under the skin,

jumpstarting the regenerative process that produces fresh, new collagen…to lift and tighten skin on the neck, chin and brow as well as smooth skin on the chest.” Pros: It’s non-surgical and no downtime. Results can last for years. Cons: Results take time – two to three months. Side effects can be short-term redness and swelling. Procedure can be uncomfortable. Cost: Starts from $1,500 depending on which part of the face is treated.

Steps to build a perfect home theatre

Living

f you are a cinephile, then a regular television screen can never replace the magic of watching films on the big screen for you. No matter how fancy your telly is, the fact is it won’t ever give you that theatrelike experience. So why not get that movie-theatre experience right into your home? Thanks to affordable technology, a ‘Home Theatre’ is no longer a luxury

reserved only for the rich and the famous. Building up a home theatre is an ideal choice for film aficionados, who don’t want to ever compromise on their ultimate cinema-viewing experience. And while there is a wide range of products available in the market to help build the perfect home cinema, the key to successfully setting up a

Fix a Budget

Choose the Ideal Room Now that you have a general budget, it is time to pick up the right room for your home theatre. The dimensions and buildup of your room are pivotal for the desired cinema experience. So, whether it’s a

Keep the Light Out

Remember the latecomers entering the theatre just when you are watching an interesting scene in the cinema hall? Yes, we all know how annoying it is. Well, a light bleed in your home theatre room can be annoying too. It not only distracts your attention from the screen but if there is an outside light bleed in the room then it might disrupt your projected image

as well. Selecting a room with minimum possible light can ease you with the fixings. If still there is a source of outside light that is entering your room, you can limit it with light-blocking curtains or dark shades. Outside light weakens the video projection and makes the flat screen viewing experience unpleasant. So, to enhance the video projection, cutting down on ambient light is of prime importance.

Home Cinema Lighting Lighting is the crucial stage for achieving a perfect cinema-like experience. While it is important to have low lighting levels while viewing a film, you will also need some ambient lighting to move around your home theatre whenever you have to. Set up major light fixtures at the rear of the room and fit dimmers to make certain the light is just right and not overpowering the room. If there are no budget constraints, don’t hesitate to splurge on an intelligent lighting control system.

Sound Proofing and Acoustic Photos: iStock, Images for representation only

Someone speaking next to you in a cinema hall can disrupt your movie-watching experience; likewise outside sounds entering your home theatre can prove to be a major fall back. Hence soundproofing is essential for this purpose. Consider replacing you hallow doors with the solid ones to keep the noise out. No matter how simple it may look, the acoustic of the room can make for a best or worst movie-watching experience.

Sound generally tends to bounce off barren walls and it can be very annoying when you are watching a film. Try to fix this by adding a layer of drywall to your regular one. You might not be a fan of carpets but you will just love the way floor and wall carpets work in your home theatre space.

Ideal Seating While watching a movie for long hours, comfort is the foremost concern. Many a time it’s the seating or arrangement that makes one like or dislike a theatre. The seating will also play an important part in how easily you are able to focus on your screen. You can add your comfy sofas, bean bags or laid-back chairs, however, if you have the budget, then go for authentic cinema style seating. With a 20 by 14 theatre, you can easily add two rows with three to four seats per row. If you are considering rows, build a platform to elevate the second row to enhance the experience. Select the ones that suit you the best for a relaxed viewing experience.

“I got on one knee and popped the question. She was totally caught off guard!” How did you meet? Sim: We met through a mutual friend that Justin went to school with and later that same friend began working with me and we became good friends. One day she approached me at work and mentioned how she knows someone that she would like me to meet, and that we would be a great match. At first, I was a bit sceptical and hesitant but later grew warmer to the idea of meeting him. A few weeks later Justin made the first move and asked me out for dinner. When he came to pick me up for our date we instantly connected with no dull moment. It

had felt like the evening had come to an end rapidly. From that day on we knew we were meant to be.

What do you love most about one another? Justin: I love how selfless, loving and compassionate Sim is towards me and people around her. She is always ready to help out anyway she can. She always has a positive outlook on life no matter what the situation is, which keeps me grounded. Sim: I love how he is so down to earth and spontaneous. Never a dull moment! He always makes me laugh and never fails to put a smile on my face.

Could you share your proposal story? Justin: I called Sim when she got

off work one day and told her to get ready for dinner. I took her to the location of our first date. She had no idea that I was going to propose. When we arrived at our destination, we went for a beautiful walk by the water and admired the sunset and boats cruising by. There I began to reminisce about our first date and bringing up memories from that day. Then I got on one knee and popped the question. She was totally caught off guard!

Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment? Justin: On the day of the wedding, I woke up with a sense of excitement. My favourite moment from our wedding was when I finally got to see Sim as we could not see each other two weeks prior to the wedding, and another favourite was officially being married! Sim: The morning of my wedding went by very smooth and calm. Everything and everyone was on time and on schedule. My favourite moment from the wedding day was obviously seeing Justin and secretly exchanging quick glances with each other at the altar. Our awesome photographer/videographer, Studio 55, very efficiently captured all the special

moments. The team made Justin and I feel super comfortable during our preshoots to the entire wedding week.

Could you tell us about your reception? A: Our reception was finally a time where we both could have a good time and relax knowing that most of the major events were done! We went with a silver and white décor with a touch of crystal, which turned out beautifully. The DJ kept it coming with awesome music to keep us and the guests pumped.

Can you describe your outfits? Sim: For the wedding, we chose the colours royal blue, navy blue and bright red. The achkan was purchased from India along with all the accessories. My lehenga was purchased from Made in India (Surrey). To finish my wedding look, I purchased all of my morning accessories at Gehna. Both of our evening attires were custom made and purchased locally.

Where did you honeymoon? A: We didn’t leave on our honeymoon until one month later as we wanted to spend time with all our out of town guests. We decided on Mexico since both of us had never been there. We stayed at

Exploring Naxos Town (Chora)

Naxos in Ancient Greek Myths

N

axos features prominently in Greek mythology. Here are some of the most common legends attributed to the island.

F

According to legend, the Greek god Zeus was raised on Naxos, in Zas Cave, until he was old enough to lead a campaign against the Titans.

Y

Naxos also claims a strong relationship with the Greek god of wine Dionysus, who ensured the fertility of vineyards on the island.

Naxos at a Glance The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos is the lushest of the islands and is truly an undiscovered gem. The capital city Hora (or Naxos Town) lies right along the coast, and has that classic vista of traditional whitewashed houses lining a hilly town. Perched above it all is the Kastro – a Venetian castle that was once the seat of power in the Cyclades for over 300 years. Below lies a labyrinth of charming cobblestoned alleys and courtyards, teeming with artisan shops, restaurants and shopping. Naxos has something for every kind of traveller – rich Byzantine history, mouthwatering local cuisine, and some of the most pristine beaches in the world.

If you arrive by ferry, the first thing you’ll see is the ancient Portara, a huge marble gate and sole remain of an unfinished temple of Apollo. Towering on the islet, at the entrance to Naxos Harbour, this monumental gate is an emblem of Naxos and dates back to 7th Century BC. You can walk up to this islet from the mainland for some stunning views of Naxos Town. This is also a spectacular place for watching the sunset. Take some time to explore the Kastro, the 13th Century medieval quarter of Naxos Town. Venetian mansions still survive in the centre of Kastro, and you can see the remnants of the castle, the Tower of Sanoudos. You can also visit the Della Rocca-Barozzi Venetian Museum. This unique private museum is housed in a Venetian mansion and you can wander through the rooms to see how the original Italian aristocrat owners lived, what they wore, and how they furnished their rooms. Be sure to head down to the bustling waterfront for a gorgeous walk along the harbour. This is the centre of Naxos Town and the streets are lined with taverns, cafes, bars and restaurants with some great seaside views. The best way to soak in the charm of Naxos Town is to let yourself get lost in the streets and you’ll come across some iconic Greek scenes like lazy cats, charming courtyards with pink bougainvillea flowers, and blue and green doors of traditional houses.

Top Beaches in Naxos If relaxing by the sea is your idea of a perfect Greek getaway, Naxos will not disappoint. Just a stone’s throw away (or a quick bus ride) will take you to a stunning stretch of some of Greece’s best beaches. Agios Prokopios is probably the most popular beach on Naxos and is considered one of the best European beaches to visit! This long, sandy beach with turquoise waters is also the place to go for a scuba diving adventure. You’ll find the established Blue Fin Divers here, that offer a mix of cave, wreck and reef dives. If you decide to keep walking down, you’ll eventually reach Agía Ánna, another beach with golden sand and turquoise waters. It also has a picturesque little port, complete with bobbing fishing boats. It’s another popular beach and has great facilities like umbrellas and beach chairs for rent and multitude of beachfront taverns. Looking for something a little less busy? Keep heading down that stretch and you’ll hit Plaka Beach. Extending for more than 4 km, only parts of this beach is organized with umbrellas and sun beds, and walking along the beachfront is a popular activity. Some parts of the beach are also good for snorkeling and you’ll see an impressive variety of fish in the crystal clear waters.

A lot of emphasis has been placed on the stereo, because how can you have a fun city car without some “Kick’in” tunes? The manufacturer distributed USB drives containing hand-picked songs spanning a variety of genres to show off the available Bose Personal Plus sound system. Using only eight speakers, Bose promises “360 degrees of immersive sound,” the key being a pair of uniquely placed speakers inside the driver’s seat head restraint. A few highlights unusual for the segment are thrown in free of charge: a flat bottom steering wheel, although you’ll want to go for the leather option to avoid sporty-looking plastic, collision mitigation in the form of intelligent emergency braking, and automatic headlights. Nissan’s excellent Intelligent Around View Monitor birds-eye camera costs extra. So what makes the vehicle great for city dwellers? The seven-inch ground clearance and tight turning radius helps navigate the concrete jungle with ease; the ergonomic “Zero Gravity” seats reduce fatigue while stuck in traffic and feature a high seating position for ideal visibility; and 716 litres of storage space behind the second row allows room for all kinds of gear. Roomy five passenger accommodation means none of your friends will be left stranded. The Kicks is powered by a peppy 1.6-litre fourcylinder engine mated to an Xtronic continuously variable transmission. The 125 horsepower is decent for moving the relatively lightweight 1,215-kilogram crossover around, although I would have liked to see a manual gearbox offered, as it is on the Qashqai, for the few of us still around who enjoy shifting ourselves. Approximately fuel economy is rated at an excellent 7.1 L/100 km in combined city and highway driving. Three grades are offered – the S is priced at $17,998 and includes plenty of standard equipment as we discussed above. The SV for the price of $20,898 adds heated front seats and side mirrors, push button start, 17 inch alloy wheels and SiriusXM satellite radio. The top-of-the line SR is $22,798 and bundles in Bose audio, orangestitching and roof rails.

n true Mazda fashion, the Japanese manufacturer has released an updated Mazda6 – that looks just like the previous one. Well, if you look closely, the subtle changes will begin to pop out, most of them lending a more premium feel to the car, and we will explore this further below. However, the biggest news is the addition of a turbocharged version of the 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G motor, similar to the one found in the CX-9 crossover, giving the flagship

sedan a serious boost in power. The most eye-catching element of the exterior update is definitely the grille. Gone are the horizontal slats, replaced by a grid of small 3-D blocks that looks different depending on the angle it’s viewed at due to reflecting light. The grille surround is also taller, and the winged element now flows from the frame outwards at a near 90-degree angle, cradling the slimmed-down headlamp lenses. The dual exhaust tips are larger in diameter and pushed further apart creating a wider appearance. The chrome wing above the license plate recess bleed into the reshaped tail lamps themselves, complementing the design of the front fascia. Overall, the entire outer packaging just feels upscale yet understated, a purposeful move as Mazda is slowly pivoting towards becoming a more luxuryoriented mainstream brand. This trend carries over to the interior, and a perfect example is in the seating. Mazda states they have done away with the

different shades, for example the dark brown Deep Chestnut on ours – and the door trim and instrument panel crafted from Japanese Sen, a special type of wood often reserved for Japanese furniture and musical instruments. The dashboard is covered in a beautiful soft-touch leather-like material called Ultrasuede created by Japanese textile and chemical company, Toray Industries. Hits of satin chrome (real metal, thank you!) can be found on the seatbacks, steering wheel and paddle shifters. Unfortunately, not much has changed in the infotainment department, where commands are handled by a rotary control knob. It is fine for the most part except while trying to perform simple tasks such as quickly switching between radio stations, requiring the user to tediously navigate through submenus. Saving the best for last, the Mazda6 returns with the choice of two engines. There’s a revised naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder gaining the ability to deactivate unused cylinders during light cruising conditions, between 40 and 80 km/h, to increase fuel efficiency. All-new to the model is a turbocharged 2.5-litre direct-injection mill making 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, giving a lot more power on tap when needed and even producing a bit of a growl when the throttle is applied in a spirited manner. Another reason to get excited: when the latter is running 93 octane fuel, the horsepower number jumps to 250. The caveat to everything is the cost. Although the base trim starts $27,000, the MSRP on our press vehicle was $38,800.

Next on the cards is the quirky, fun, issue-based film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu, starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. Then there is the heart-warming tale of self-reliance featuring Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan – Sui Dhaaga. Releasing on the same day is Vishal Bhardwaj’s explosive dramedy, Pataakha. It is a heart-warming story of a small-town tailor Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and an embroiderer Mamta (Anushka Sharma), which is deeply rooted in the India milieu. Talking about the film Anushka said, “Sui Dhaaga is a story of self-reliance that I believe will connect to the grassroots level with every Indian.” Varun, who is equally excited about the film said, “From Gandhiji to Modiji, our leaders have always endorsed the mantra of Made in India. With Sui Dhaaga, I am proud to take their message to millions of movie lovers in a way that is entertaining and relevant.” Now doesn’t this one look like an interesting joy ride?

here are several reasons that make this Anurag Kashyap and Aanand L Rai offering an exciting one. First and foremost is the fact that the maverick director, who is known for his dark and violent kind of films, is directing an intense love story. Second is, of course, the fresh casting that brings together some of the finest actors of Bollywood together. And last but not the least is the beautiful mix of the different worlds of filmmakers Rai and Kashyap. While the makers are tightlipped about the project, it is learnt that the film is based on the theme of – ‘the heart wants what it wants.’ Taapsee, who plays an Amritsari girl in the film said, “It is a typical Anurag Kashyap style of love story, where you do not have black and white characters. Everyone has certain flaws. It is presented by Aanand L. Rai, who is known for these small-town beautiful stories.” Well, we can’t wait to see this love story unfold.

THE NUN September 7 If you are familiar with The Conjuring cinematic universe (it’s a thing), you must be already acquainted with the big bad of this spinoff, a demon nun with malevolent – if mysterious – intentions. This origin story follows a sister, a priest, and a novitiate as they investigate the inexplicable death of a young woman at a convent. Expected fright level: 4/5. Expect scarejumps galore, but nothing too lasting. The saga relays more on craftsmanship than originality.

The fall line-up is an embarrassment of riches for horror lovers.

EVERYONE

GETS A

SCARE BY JORGE IGNACIO CASTILLO

THE PREDATOR September 14 Following a failed attempt to reboot the franchise and two terrible movies pitting the title character against the creature from Alien, The Predator goes back to basics. Much like in the original, a group of former soldiers are tasked with dealing with the extraterrestrial, who is not only smarter and limber than them, but has better weaponry. The one element going for this incarnation is writer/director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3), who knows a thing or two about action. Expected fright level: 3/5. It may not be scary, but it definitely will be gross.

MANDY September 14 While no longer considered a major Hollywood star, Nicolas Cage has found a niche in the darkest corners of horror. Just last year, the actor desecrated the idea of family unit in the twisted Mom and Dad. BC’s own Panos Cosmatos turns Cage into a broken man with vengeance in his mind after a brutal cult kidnaps his beloved, the eponymous Mandy (Andrea Riseborough). Massive bloodshed and psychedelic trips ensue. Expected fright level: 4/5. Imagine Cage at his craziest for the best part of 90 minutes. It’s terrifying.

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS September 21 Torture-porn specialist Eli Roth (Hostel, Death Wish) tones down his act to helm this children-oriented scarefest. Recently orphaned, 10-year-old Lewis moves to a sleepy Michigan town with his uncle (Jack Black). Unbeknownst to him, the municipality is crawling with warlocks and witches (including Cate Blanchett) and his new house hides a clock that could trigger the end of the world. Expected fright level: 1/5. Never mind Roth’s background, this is an Amblin movie (produced by Steven Spielberg), more Gremlins than Cabin Fever.

GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN October 12 Three years ago, the film adaptation based on R.L. Stine’s book was a surprise hit, not in small measure because of Jack Black’s work as Stine himself. For the sequel, nobody from the original cast returns, but the premise is the same: A couple of kids find one of Stine’s scary books, which comes to life because why not. Expected fright level: 1/5. The Goosebumps saga walks a thin line between scaring the kids and traumatizing them, but this sequel looks downright cheesy.

HALLOWEEN October 19 The 11th installment of the Halloween saga is a very peculiar one. After years of tying itself into knots, this new chapter wipes out everything that happened between the first movie and now. Forty years after his killing spree in Haddonfield, Michael Myers escapes the insane asylum and heads back to the only home he ever knew‌ to cause more mayhem. Only this time, the frightened nanny that beat him the first time around (Jamie Lee Curtis, back for one more ride) is ready for his return. Expected fright level: 5/5. Unlike in previous installments, a talented filmmaker (David Gordon Green) is at the helm, and it shows.

LIZZIE September 14 The story of Lizzie Burden, a young woman who allegedly murdered her parents with an ax, has inspired dozens of films, which depict Lizzie from innocent victim to calculating sociopath. This newest version falls closer to the former: ChloĂŤ Sevigny is Lizzie, the younger daughter of a well-off patriarch who treats her like a prisoner. Lizzie falls in love with a maid (Kristen Stewart), a relationship that would eventually trigger the violent denouement. Expected fright level: 2/5. While heavily influenced by the #MeToo movement, there is still room for some classic gothic horror.

t goes without saying that for British chef Anjum Anand, food has played an integral role in her life. “I have always had very positive memories around food; friends congregating at mine as there was always fresh food or tasty leftovers in the fridge, bonding with my father over the most adventurous dishes on a menu, cooking with my motherin-law and learning their family food helped form our new relationship, and now cooking with my children and teaching them the basics,” says Anand, who has worked across the world in innovative restaurants such as Café Spice in New York, the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles, and the Park Royal Hotel’s Indian restaurant in New Delhi. As a talented chef, Anand’s interest in cooking mainly revolves around preparing Indian food that is fresher, lighter and simple enough to cook at home. She believes that cooking at home has become much simpler

thanks to the gadgets that help with the preparation. “I try to keep recipes simple without losing any flavour elements. I often challenge a recipe that seems unnecessarily lengthy and simplify the stages and see if I still get the layers of flavour. Lastly, I try to make following my recipes really simple and straight forward.” Her recipes are inspired from conversations, restaurant dishes that encourage her to try an Indian version, and mostly from her trips to India. Anand was one of the first writers to create and write Indian recipes catering for the health-conscious cook; her first book, Indian Every Day: Light, Healthy Indian Food, was published in 2003. Since then she has several best-selling books on Indian food; Indian Food Made Easy, which topped the Amazon best sellers list; Anjum’s New Indian; Anjum’s Eat Right for Your Body Type, which won an award in Germany;

I Love Curry; Anjum’s Vegetarian Feast; Anjum’s Quick & Easy Indian; and I Love India which released in 2017. “The themes to my books tend to reflect where I am in my life, my first book was about healthy Indian cooking as I was trying to lose weight those years, my second and third were TV tie-ins to introduce people to Indian food and the regions,” shares the chef cum author who has also written an Ayurvedic book “as it is the fascinating ancient science of how to be healthy.” Her latest cookbook, I Love India, is based on her travels and experiences to India and is an ode to Indian food. The celebrity chef is a regular guest on TV and radio shows, appearing on BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Show, The Steve Wright Show, Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, Radio London and Daily Brunch, as well as regularly appearing in print media including The Daily Telegraph, The Metro, The Sunday Times magazine, The Independent, BBC Good Food, Delicious, Red, Waitrose Kitchen, Waitrose Weekend and Sainsbury’s magazine. In 2007, she created Indian Food Made Easy, a BBC 2 six-part series, with a second series commissioned in 2008, which was watched by over three million viewers. Anand also presented Anjum’s Spice Stories, a 12 part series, filmed in Australia and aired on SBS Food in 2016. In July 2011, Anjum launched, The Spice Tailor, a range of authentic, quality, at-home Indian cooking products. “I launched the Spice Tailor for the same reasons I started writing cookbooks, to make real Indian food accessible to those who wanted it. I wanted it to taste like it does at home and be equally clean; we have no preservatives and make our food in the same way I would cook at home so that we can have all the layers of flavours one would

Q&A

How do you see the growth of the culinary industry worldwide?

It is fascinating to watch the industry develop, techniques are getting more cutting edge, more precise but also less intuitive. Flavours are fusing and people are eating out more than ever. People are more interested in food experiences, at home and abroad, and it seems the newer generations are looking for healthy and clean eating as the main drivers for what they eat, so there is a real change going on and a really interesting time in the food world. Indians around the world have made significant contributions to their immigrated countries, what do you think of this accomplishment?

I have always been really proud to be Indian. I love the culture and values and I feel the immigrated Indians really showcase these values best; they are hard-working, make the most of opportunities, are family-orientated and are go-getters. I hope they/we continue in this vein to contribute positively wherever we settle.

expect from Indian food,” says the entrepreneur. The products comprise of cooking sauces, tandoori pastes, Indian wrap kits (kathi rolls), naans, chutneys and more and are also available in some countries outside UK, including Canada. Her advice to young chefs is to “learn hard, work hard and find your culinary voice. It is a great journey so enjoy!”

Their first impressions of Canada – “welcoming, clean and peaceful.” During the initial days in Canada, the family lived with a friend. “A friend of our friend picked us up from the airport and we stayed with them for a couple of days and then moved into a basement he had looked for us,” says Parul. They moved during the summer season which helped them ease into the surroundings and also enjoy the nice weather and the beautiful province of BC. Getting used to the new place took some time. “We had to start from scratch,” explains Parul, “from small things like purchasing household items, to career, admission in a school for our son,
