n the Vaisakhi day, ‘The Rider of the Blue Steed’ inaugurated a highly dynamic personality – The Khalsa. This community’s ‘Light of Life’ ceaselessly radiates glory, justice and love. The Nash doctrine enforced on Vaisakhi day freed us from the shackles of slavery: shattered inequities due to caste-apartheid or lineage, eliminated doubts borne out of polluted minds, and eradicated sexism through annihilation of patriarchal hegemony. Today, Vaisakhi has become a reminder to all Sikhs to reflect on the Guru’s vision of personal and community development as articulated in the Guru Granth Sahib. It

The outstanding response to this passion project, helmed by the Baweja family has given actor Harman Baweja enough reasons to smile and rejoice. It makes us wonder if we shall see the actor more often behind the camera now?

His latest stint as a creative producer on the animated film, Chaar Sahibzaade proved to be extremely fruitful – not only did the film set a new benchmark for animated films in India, but the heroic tale of the sacrifices of Shri Guru Gobind Singh’s four sons, also touched hearts worldwide. “Possibly, the film certainly opened up new frontiers for me behind the camera. The fact that the film was universally praised and successful increases that possibility,” Harman reveals, but at the same time he adds, “Still, there are advantages of being in front of the camera as well, so I hope to continue to pursue both.” His passion for acting will never take a back-
seat. Especially, given the fact that being the son of a popular Bollywood director and filmmaker, Harry Baweja, Harman had always aspired to become an actor. “Yes, for sure. It was an easy decision,” he asserts and continues, “I consider myself fortunate and blessed to have a father who is so successful and highly regarded as a legend and leader in the industry. He was so committed to his work while I was growing up that passion was contagious. Of course, it was natural for me to aspire to be an actor. And yet, my father wanted me to have my own path even though I am proud to follow in his footsteps to a certain degree.” Not many people may know this, but before making his acting debut in Love Story 2050, Harman used to assist his father behind the camera. Evidently Harman now has ample of experience in all aspects of filmmaking: production, direction, and acting. So which one would he term as the toughest professionally? “Each aspect of filmmaking has its challenges as well as its thrills, and for sure each can present tough moments, it’s hard to say which is the 2015 VAISAKHI

He further explains, “Production takes you into different worlds where you have to wear different hats, regarding things like – money-raising, hiring cast and crew, organizing things on set, and discussing matters with distributors. Direction is a privilege, but there are many challenges in orchestrating every moment on set. One has to be always mindful of squeezing

creativity against budget and schedule constraints. Compared to the other two, acting might seem the least challenging because it is more ‘solo’, but here it can feel solitary at times. Plus, every mistake seems magnified and many times you are performing because it is against someone else’s judgment, where you might think you ‘nailed’ a scene and the next moment it’s ‘take two’!” Talking about acting, we recently saw Harman on the big screen in Dishkiyaoon, after almost a gap of five years. It was quite a long break, was he waiting for a certain kind of script? “Acting is a career where you cannot always control how much you work, or when you work,” he replies. “Of course, I am offered different projects and roles all the time, but finding the right script and role at the right time is sometimes a challenge and there are other interests I have that I wish to pursue.” One of these interests is Chaar Sahibzaade, for which Harman donned the hat of a creative producer. The film was in making for nearly five years, what took so long? The question brings a smile on his face as he says, “There were several factors that contributed to the five-year process. First, we were meticulous in our approach to the subject matter, both from a research and scholarly standpoint, as well as in outreach and liaison to ensure the film would be received in a credible manner and seen as authentic. Second, animation is a painstaking process; it is a frame-by-frame analysis... you know what they say, ‘paralysis by analysis.’ Seriously, while the postproduction was also lengthy and time-consuming,

“It is amazing to watch the Indian film industry grow and expand, not only in India but throughout the world. it was highly rewarding to bring this wonderful film together frame-by-frame.” For an animated Indian film and that is based on history - Chaar Sahibzaade made phenomenal business; definitely proving that the industry is warming up to new ideas. So how does he perceive the film industry today, and who is his inspiration? “It is amazing to watch the Indian film industry grow and expand, not only in India but throughout the world. Its influence has never been stronger on a global basis and this will only increase as the world grows smaller and more connected. We are increasingly seeing Hollywood and Bollywood coming together and developing closer ties through co-productions in film, music, and media. As to my inspiration, of course – it’s my father, who allowed me to pursue my dreams while providing so much wisdom and expertise along the way,” he says proudly. The fervor with which he speaks of the film industry is noteworthy, and it gets you wondering just how important it is for him to be part of this lights-cameraaction world. “Naturally it is important because to a certain extent it is what I grew up with, and it has been the industry I have been immersed in professionally, with the influence of my father and family since I was born.” He adds, “None of us should be defined by our work, we are more than ‘what we do’ but surely for me lights-camera-action world is an integral and vibrant

part of my life and who I am as a person.” Clearly, he breathes cinema… but what are the other things that keep him engaged? “I am close to my family and there are always events and activities with them. I stay active socially with many friends. So much of my free time is spent at events and galas. But I enjoy traveling whenever I can, and you might be surprised to know I can really favor a quiet night. And, this interview is occurring during the Cricket World Cup, so of course I will be glued to the TV during all of the India matches,” he speaks like a true-blue cricket fan. Ask him about his biggest achievements and failures, and Harman grows philosophical. “I don’t view life as high mountains and low valleys. We all have enjoyed successes in life, moments that make us proud due to hard work, diligence, and sacrifice. And we all make mistakes, we might wish for a ‘do-over’ but generally life does not provide that, we make decisions as best as we can in the moment and hopefully learn from them. That summarizes my philosophy, which, of course, is more the life-long ‘journey’ than focusing on specific peaks and valleys.” 2015 VAISAKHI

In the opening decades of the 19th century, Hari Singh Nalwa would cross the Indus at the head of a Khalsa army to establish Maharajah Ranjit Singh as the first non-Muslim ruler in the stronghold of the Afghans. Ranjit Singh, who as a teenage warrior had marshalled the various Sikh clans ‘misls’ into a potent brotherhood, saw his kingdom as a blessing of the Guru. He ruled his kingdom as a humble servant of the Guru and the Sikh Kingdom came to be known as the ‘Sarkar Khalsaji’. It is remarkable to think that the greatest power on earth at the time, the British Empire, thought it’s wiser not to stare down a simple Jat chieftain. A master horseman, Ranjit was known to lead from the front and was ably supported in his campaigns by an array of generals that included European mercenaries. Under their leadership, the

Khalsa army was fashioned along European lines so effectively that the British did not dare test them. But the greatest of his generals was a son of Punjab, Hari Singh Nalwa, who was destined to take the fight to a more local enemy, the nemesis of the Sikhs at the time - the Afghans.
The Punjab and the Afghans Punjab first came under Muslim domination in the 10th century, and waves of conversion to Islam ensued with each arriving Arab, Turk and Persian raider. The most significant of the 18th century invaders were the Persian, Nadir Shah, and the Afghan, Ahmed Shah Abdali. Abdali was the founder of the Afghan empire which stretched from Mashad (Iran) in the west to the vicinity of Ludhiana (Punjab, India) in the east; and from Kashmir (India) in the north to Karachi (Pakistan) in the south. Its inhabitants were variously referred to as Afghans, Pashtuns and Pathans. The word ‘Pathan’ was originally used to denote those ‘Pashtuns’ descendants of the Afghans who had established dynastic rule in the Indian subcontinent and had continued to reside there. Over time, however, ‘Pathan’ came to be interchangeably used for ‘Afghan’ and their rule became synonymous with terror even for the Indian Muslim converts who were belittled as ‘Hindkos’. A prevailing saying among the Afghans was, “The Rock of Hind are pearls; the Rivers are wine; the Mountains are musk, but the People are pigeons...” The Hindus of the subcontinent ardently prayed, “Oh! Gods, from the venom of the Cobra, the teeth of the Tiger, and the vengeance of the Afghan, deliver us...”

Hari Singh Champion of the Khalsaji Hari Singh Nalwa was the answer to the prayer of the tortured. In him, the Afghans encountered a true Khalsa warrior. Guru Gobind Singh had said, “I will train the sparrow to hunt the hawk, I will teach one man to fight a legion.” No one lived up to this lofty ideal better than Hari Singh Nalwa, under his leadership the ‘pigeons’ of India were trained to hunt the hawk, wrestling great swathes of Afghan territory – Hari Singh Nalwa led, for the first time in centuries, an invasion westwards. With a British ‘friendship’ treaty in place, the Sutlej limited the Sarkar Khalsaji designs to the south, so the Khalsa army advanced into Multan in 1818, Kashmir in 1819, then took Dera Ghazi Khan in 1820 and Dera Ismail Khan in 1821. Alarmed by the ascendency of the Sikhs, Azim Khan Burkazi, the ruler of Kabul, called for a jihad. In 1823, an Afghan army gathered on the banks of the Kabul River only to taste another defeat. Ultimately the summer capital of the Afghan Empire, Peshawar, was subdued in 1834 and Hari Singh Nalwa was
30

installed as the first Sikh Governor. The Khalsa forces advanced to the Khyber Pass itself where Hari Singh Nalwa was instructed to build a fort to forever stem the tide of invasion through that infamous corridor. In 1837, Dost Mohammad Khan would launch the entire army of the Kingdom of Kabul – nearly 25,000 in the battle of Jumrud – to expel the Sikhs from their doorstep, only to fail. The Sikhs however paid an immense price as Hari Singh Nalwa was mortally wounded during the battle. When Hari Singh Nalwa was born, the word ‘Afghan’ struck terror into the hearts of Indians; at the time of his death, the Sikhs had bettered the Afghans – and the tributes paid to him by historians and chroniclers of the time perhaps equaled Ranjit Singh. However, it was the words of the Maharajah himself that underscored the fact that more than any general, Hari Singh Nalwa was the architect of a fulfillment of a foretold destiny. On hearing of Hari Singh’s death, the Maharaja declared that he would rather have lost half his kingdom than his General. “The one,” he said, “I might with his assistance have re-conquered, but I can never have another Hari Singh.”

ince centuries, countless Gurudwaras across India and Pakistan have served to commemorate significant events related to the Sikh religion and its rich and memorable past. Indeed, besides being a place of prayer and worship for the religion’s millions of followers, these Gurudwaras, which include Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Gurdwara Sis Ganj, and Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib, among many others, hold a prominent place within the pages of history, for they are interconnected with the lives and teachings of the ten Sikh gurus. “Gurdwaras were called ‘Dharamshala’ in the past [and this is] where people used to pray with

[the gurus] and do discussions. They got blessings, free food (langar), shelter, and medicines,” explains Kulwinder Singh, Head of the Religion department at Khalsa School in Surrey, BC. These ‘Dharamshalas’ or Gurdwaras, which are still in existence today, not only help devotees remember the Sikh gurus and their legacies but they also help to preserve, commemorate and reiterate the core values of Sikhism, which include selfless service, love and equality. One such Gurdwara is the Bangla Sahib situated in Delhi, India, where Sikhism’s youngest guru, Harkrishan Ji is known to have saved countless people from various diseases and illnesses.

Bangla Sahib
Looking into Sikh history, we can see a number of similar events in which each of the ten Sikh gurus demonstrated love, understanding and selfless compassion to all types of people, including those who were being oppressed. “Bangla Sahib was [originally] the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh who was a devotee of Harkrishan Ji. When Guruji came to Delhi he stayed at Raja Jai Singh’s bungalow and people came to visit Guruji in the bungalow,” says Kulwinder. He adds that although people were not permitted to visit religious places during this time, any individual, regardless of their caste, religion or gender, was welcomed and served at Guru Harkrishan Ji’s Dharamshala. And while he helped his visitors in various ways, perhaps the most prominent service Harkrishan Ji provided was giving treatment to individuals who were suffering from the smallpox epidemic, which was prevalent in Delhi during

his stay. According to Tejinder Singh, of the Guru Nanak Academy in Surrey BC, “those that came to the Guru’s sanctuary and followed the teachings were cured. Some of Guru Harkrishan Ji’s instructions to the people… were to meditate on Waheguru’s (God) name, read Gurbani, serve the Sangat and to bathe in the holy sarovar (pool) which cured countless individuals and eradicated their diseases, both of the body and mind.” Looking into Sikh history, we can see a number of similar events in which each of the ten Sikh gurus demonstrated love, understanding and selfless compassion to all types of people, including those who were being oppressed. One such event occurred during the time of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji when the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was trying to forcefully convert Hindus into Islam. “Kashmiri Pandits were the Supreme Authority of Hindus. Aurangzeb’s strategy was that if he could convert Kashmiri Pandits into Islam then it would be easier to convert all Hindus. So, Kashmiri Pandits came to Guru Teg Bahadur Ji to seek help. Guru Ji’s son (Gobind Rai) was only nine at the time. Guru Ji discussed the situation with his family and

decided to sacrifice himself for the sake of Hindus. Guru Ji told the Pandits to send a message to [Aurangzeb] that if he could convert Guru Ji into Islam then he can convert all Hindus, but if not then he should leave them alone”, explains Kulwinder. Hearing this message, an enraged Aurangzeb arrested Teg Bahadur Ji along with his companions. According to Kulwinder, three Sikhs, namely Bhai Dayal Das, Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Sati Das were tortured and killed in front of the Guru in the first and second weeks of November 1675. While Bhai Dayal Das was boiled alive, Bhai Mati Das was sawed alive and Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton wool and burned alive. Hereafter, Aurangzeb put two options in front of
the Guru – either he should convert to Islam or embrace death. The Guru, choosing to embrace death, was beheaded publicly in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, where the Sij Ganj Gurdwara now stands. “Sikhi does not believe in conversion…. Sikhism believes that one has a right to practice any faith/religion. During that time, the Human Rights were being violated by the Mughals as people were forcefully converted into Islam. Guru refused to convert to teach a lesson to the government and to Sikhs that one should tand against the violation of human rights,” shares Kulwinder. Similar to his descendants, which include his father Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the tenth Guru, Gobind Singh Ji also stood for justice, equality and freedom. Listing some of his contributions

He did this by permanently passing on the guruship to the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which is the Sikh holy text. At the site where these two important incidents occurred, there stands a Gurdwara called Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib. According to Tejinder, before leaving, Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that “although my body is going to Sach Khand, I will forever be with each and every Sikh.” Since the inception of Sikhism in the 15th century, countless Gurdwaras and landmarks continue to stand tall even today and continue to play an important role in immortalizing the history, sacrifices, and triumphs of this remarkable religion.

B
eing a Sikh, names distinguish us as a community: the name Singh identifies Sikh men, and Kaur identifies Sikh women. Both are used either as a middle name or surname and originate from words associated with royalty, which denote a princely status. These names were first formally given to Sikhs when the tenth Guru created the Khalsa order in 1699, during the annual festival of Vaisakhi. They are seen as a gift from him and carry an almost epic quality. When you understand that time was one of severe oppression and denial of basic rights, Sikh names affirmed that human life is precious and worthy of dignity. For Sikhs, sovereignty also
means that true rule must be founded on compassion for people, and the courage to uphold just values. This was also a reason for Sikhs to wear a princely turban and carry a small sword or kirpan, a reminder that humanity must be cherished. Singh and Kaur are also a way to distinguish gender because Sikh first names are unisex; and are taken from scripture and reflect an aspect of the Divine: Jagdeep is ‘light of the world’; Amrit is ‘sacred nectar’, Balvir is ‘Brave Hero’, Dayal is ‘Compassionate One’ and Satnam is ‘True Name’. Therefore, names we give and use are subconscious tools for us to deepen and broaden the mind, and to live in an inspired way. 2015 VAISAKHI

ixing jazz music with concepts of social justice to create an impactful melody is not easy. Neelamjit Dhillon, a relatively new voice from the Lower Mainland, is trying to reflect on such themes through artistic expression. After releasing his album “Komagata Maru” last summer at the Vancouver Jazz Festival to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the incident, Dhillon wants to use art as a form of activism. “It’s about how to reflect on the “Komagata Maru” by bringing all those influences together, and create a new kind of sound that is reflective of the time and place we live in, and where

me to study the tabla as a way to be in touch with my culture and not become too westernized,” he says. He grew up listening to the tabla being played in the Gurdwara and so he picked up its sound and considered it as a way to engage with the Indian side of his identity. While his foray into music can be credited to his family, he was influenced by his friends as well. His childhood best friend belonged to a Polish family and all his brothers and sisters played music.“I grew up around them playing guitar and bass and drums, his older brother was getting into the sound of jazz, and so we also started playing jazz music,” Dhillon shares. Soon they were playing both in the school bands and jazz bands outside. Throughout this time, Dhillon continued playing the tabla at the Gurdwara and soon started learning some sitar from the renowned sitarist, Dr. James Hamilton. The best part for Dhillon was that he found expression in both these streams separately. “I didn’t bring tabla into a western context or bring saxophone in an Indian context. They’re both separate streams,” he explains.

Word spread around Mumbai that a saxophonist was around and so he started getting performance opportunities which took him all around India. He even got a chance to perform with a very well-known jazz musician named Louise Banks in India. While recounting his overall experience there he says, “We performed in Ahmedabad at the Saptak Music Festival, which is a great classical Indian music festival, and we presented the first fusion music performance. We even took a trip to Dhaka and Bangladesh and performed out there. It was a nice experience to travel all over India. It really is a subcontinent. The level of diversity in India is amazing. It was a lot of fun.” Soon he was back in Vancouver, reliving the local music scene while teaching at the Vancouver Community College. In 2010, he earned himself an opportunity to play at the Winter Olympics in front of 20,000 people. It was here that one of the professors from the California Institute of the Arts spotted him and asked him if he had thought about pursuing a graduate degree in music. “He thought that it was interesting that I was playing both the saxophone and the tabla, it’s a pretty rare combination,” recounts Dhillon.

There are various pockets of Middle Eastern musicians and Chinese musicians and you have the film industry, and so there’s some studio work. There are different kinds of things that are available if you are willing to do so. If you want to walk on the path of love, then surrender your ego first. “Khalsa Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, Pragteo Khalsa Parmatam Ki Mauj” The early Mughal Emperors had a peaceful relationships with the first four Guru ji’s. In 1609, Guru Arjan Dev ji was persecuted by Jahangir. Subsequently, the Ninth Nanak Guru Tegh Bahadur ji was beheaded during Aurangzeb’s rule in 1675 for saving the religious rights of Hindus. At that time Guru Gobind Singh was merely nine years old. Vaisakhi 1699 was a great day in religious history due to the arrival of democracy. Guru Gobind Singh addressed the congregation of about 80,000 from the entryway of a tent pitched on a hill in Anandpur Sahib. He drew his sword and asked for a head to be sacrificed. No one answered his first call, nor the second call, but on the third invitation, a person called Daya Ram ( later known as Bhai Daya Singh) came forward and of-

fered his head to the Guru. Guru Gobind Singh took the volunteer inside the tent, and emerged shortly, with blood dripping from his sword. He then demanded another head. One more volunteer came forward, and entered the tent with him. The Guru again emerged with blood on his sword. This happened three more times. Finally, the five volunteers came out of the tent unharmed. These five, who were willing to sacrifice their lives for their Guru, were called Panj Pyare (the five beloved ones),
These five volunteers were: Daya Ram (Bhai Daya Singh ji) Dharam Das (Bhai Dharam Singh ji) Himmat Rai (Bhai Himmat Singh Ji) Mohkam Chand (Bhai Mohkam Singh ji) Sahib Chand (Bhai Sahib Singh ji)
Guru Gobind Singh then took an iron bowl and poured some water in it. Sahib Devan (later Mata Sahib Devanagari Ji) added some sugar crystals (Patasey) to the water, and the Guru stirred this mixture with a double-edged sword whilst reciting five Bani’s. The resultant solution is called “Khande Di Pahul” (ceremony of the double-

edged sword) or commonly known as “Amrit” (nectar of immortality) Each of the Panj Pyare was given five handfuls of the Amrit to drink, and had Amrit sprinkled in their eyes five times. Each time, they repeated the phrase “Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh “
After this, the Guru then bowed in front of the five beloved ones to ask for the Amrit. This is the very first incident in religious history that a Guru asked his disciples to initiate into the Order of Khalsa he created himself, indicating democracy in religion. “Waho Waho Gobind Singh, Apey Gur Chela”
This place is now called Takht Shri Keshgarh Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh gave the title ‘Singh’ (lion) for men and the title ‘Kaur’ (princess) for women. It is noted that about twenty thousand men and women took this baptism of steel on the first day. Majority of Sikhs nowadays carry this title without taking the oath of double-edged sword.
The uniform of a Singh/Kaur of the Khalsa is comprised of the Five Ks: Kesh : Uncut hair on all parts of our body Kanga : A wooden comb to keep our hair clean Kara : An iron bracelet Kachera : Special military undershorts Kirpan : A sword
These are for identification and representation of the ideals of Sikhism, such as honesty, equality, fidelity, meditating on God, never bowing to tyranny and for helping/protecting the weak. Be Proud but Serve.

fter successfully fighting for a religious accommodation to allow him to maintain his turban and beard as a solider in the American military, Simran Preet Singh Lamba managed to pursue his childhood dream of joining the army without compromising on his religion, beliefs and values - and almost five years later, he continues to be a source of inspiration to people from all over the world. Born in New Delhi, India, Lamba began his journey into the US army when he discovered the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program, in which the military recruits individuals who have various skills, including the ability to speak specific languages. Thanks to his fluency in Hindi and Punjabi, and because he met all of the other requirements, Lamba was readily accepted into the program.

This steadfast soldier managed to pursue his childhood dream of joining the army without compromising his religious beliefs.
Soon after being accepted, he discovered that America’s army policy excludes Sikhs who maintain a turban and beard. Unperturbed by this discovery, Lamba signed the contract to begin his training. “I signed the contract, and they let me sign the contract because they assume that once you sign it and report for your basic training, you won’t mind shaving your head and you can cut your beard,” says Lamba. Thereafter, he contacted a US based advocacy group called Sikh Coalition and they agreed to help him fight for religious accommodation. “The army then rescheduled my joining date. It was supposed to be March 2010

and they rescheduled it to September 2010. It was a long battle and a big advocacy campaign, and then, finally I got my religious accommodation,” explains Lamba, who successfully demonstrated the ability to fulfill all the requirements of a solider while receiving his basic training. Indeed, the determined Sikh solider was able to silence any potential detractors by accommodating his uncut hair and beard during two key exercises. First, while exercising on the field, Lamba would wear a helmet over a small turban, also known as a patka. Second, while performing gas mask training, he was able to successfully create a seal despite his beard. “All the drill sergeants, all my supervisors, every senior, the company commanders…they were all really friendly and really welcoming, and after they actually saw me doing the same things [as my colleagues], they were like ‘we are actually missing these quality soldiers… and we need more Sikhs in the army’.” Despite the acceptance of his colleagues, Lamba, who has done his masters in Industrial Engineering from New York University, says that it was initially difficult for him to explain his

religious beliefs to other soldiers, many of whom had no knowledge about the Sikh religion. “The seniors knew what Sikhism is, and they knew the history, but I would say I was one of the most educated people among other soldiers who were 18, 19, 20, and even 30 year olds, who never went to school, or they never went to school after the twelfth grade. So sometimes it was a challenge to explain to them about the beliefs.” Drifting away from army talk and focusing on his present, Lamba reveals that after four years of service in the army, he is currently working on reserve and pursuing a civilian job as a Senior Analyst with the Port of Seattle. Alongside, he is also working on obtaining his MBA in Global

Leadership. Talking about how Sikhism and its tenants tie in with the military, Lamba says, “If someone really does follow Sikhism, there are a lot of rules and then there is a uniform standard, to have a beard and have a turban…there are certain rules and regulations that you follow as a Sikh, and that’s how the army is. Sikhs have a long history as warriors, and in the army, you are a warrior so you’re protecting others. All these values of protecting others and also equality of all, should tie into any armed forces anywhere in the world.” Emphasizing this last tenant, it’s not surprising that Lamba feels that his biggest achievement so far has been to be able to join the army without giving up his faith - but he adds that his accomplishment is still incomplete. “I gained my first biggest achievement of joining the military without giving up my faith and belief. I’m half way there, and I’ll pass the finish line if all the other Sikhs are able to serve freely in the US army. There shouldn’t be any religious accommodation; they should just be able to serve, period.”

Nishan Sahib
N
ishan is the Sikh word for flag. The nishan is raised and flown at every Sikh Gurdwara in a prominent spot at the highest point of the property when possible. The flag is made from two colours. Colours used range from yellow to deep orange and royal to grayish blue. Most popular is the Sikh coat of arms in deep blue set onto a bright orange background. The colour scheme is sometimes seen reversed. The flag pole is often covered by a cloth of the same colour as the flag background. The emblem symbolizes a khanda. Atop the flag pole is either the representation of a double-edged sword or a spear head.
Symbolism of the flag Two seven-feet high flags from the temple are taken down and washed in milk. This symbolises the value and importance the flags and the temple have within the community. The flags reflect the temple’s aim to provide food, shelter and spiritual energy. The

flags are then wrapped in new cloth before being re-hoisted.
Colour Analysis
As subtle beings we are affected by many things, one of these is colour. The colours of the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and those we see in our environment all have an affect on our emotions and well-being. Below are some meanings of the Khalsa colours from a colour therapy perspective, exploring the many ways in which they influence us as Sikhs in our personal and spiritual development. The colour yellow has to do with our sense of self, our identity who we are. It brings forth the emotions of happiness and joy. Yellow is most strongly associated

with the brain and mental faculties, giving rise to focus and clarity of thought, it is helpful to learning and the gathering of knowledge. In general terms, knowing your direction and what you are doing in life. Blue is a beautiful colour, seen in the healing water of Sarovars (pools) of Sikh Gurdwaras. It nurtures faith and trust. Blue is the colour of peace. It supports the development of verbal communication skills. Royal Blue is the colour of sensitivity. The deep blue of the night sky during Amrit Vela enhances intuition, resulting in deeper thoughts and insights. It is the colour of honesty and of being reliable. Presence and authority are other qualities inspired by this colour. Orange appears in the form of our Nishan Sahibs, the cholas worn by Panj Pyaray and Sikh turbans. This is the colour of deep joy and bliss. It absorbs shocks, nasty experiences, and trauma. It is about letting go of what holds us back or what is not helpful. Orange is the colour of connection, a sense of community, belonging and social aspects of being.

VIBC PRESENTS
City of Bhangra Festival I
n 2004, VIBC (Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society) started off as a dream between a few young men in their family living room. 11 years later this dream has become a leading South Asian voice in the non-profit arts and culture community. VIBC is 99% volunteer-powered, and 100% dedicated to creating an inclusive community for all through celebration and the joy of bhangra. VIBC has been dedicated to engaging British Columbians through building partnerships within our community, supporting local artists and art initiatives, and, annually presenting the City of Bhangra Festival. City of Bhangra features unique events and hundreds of local and international bhangra artists in dozens of dynamic performances on stages in two amazing cities, Vancouver and Surrey. From May 28 - June 6, tens of thousands will come together and celebrate through the joy of bhangra music and dance. Festival 2015 brings back some
crowd-pleasers from last year: Bhangra on Main (June 2 at the Fox Cabaret, with Surrey’s own star vocalist Raju Johal), Bhangra Village Conference (June 4 at SFU Surrey, with a public dialogue led by communications guru Sharad Khare), and the ever-popular Downtown Bhangra, featuring two days of free LIVE performances by dozens of outstanding local and international bhangra teams and performers outside the Vancouver Art Gallery (June 5 & 6). VIBC’s also introducing some great NEW events this year, guaranteed to get you on your feet. On May 28, the Festival kicks off with Taza Beats (big bhangra beats by hot local DJs at the LED Bar on Granville Street), followed by Folk Lok on May 29, featuring the fabulous SETI X and Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti at John Fluevog’s rare and beautiful Gastown shoe emporium. On May 30, Pakistani superstar and the Queen of Melody Shazia Manzoor, presented by Hard Rock Casino Vancouver, performs live at EKTA at the QE Theatre, and on June 6, NY-based
DJ Rekha headlines Bhangra and Beyond, the Festival’s official afterparty at Club FIVESIXTY in beautiful downtown Vancouver. In the Punjabi and larger South Asian diaspora, bhangra has become a means for the new generations to express themselves, craft their identities, and connect with their cultural heritage. VIBC brings bhangra together with diverse global dance and music styles to celebrate life, love, and inclusion. For VIBC bhangra is a movement—a movement needed to help build bridges across cultures and strengthen our community through shared positive experiences. VIBC’s theme for the Festival is #BhangraLove, embracing the idea of love crossing all boundaries— social, cultural, sexual, religious, geographical—and uniting (even igniting) the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere. The nature of bhangra, from its roots to its contemporary expression in the Lower Mainland and around the world, has always supported connectivity across and between individuals and communities, space and time, genders and cultures. How better to express your love than by becoming a part of the spirit of celebration, generosity, and community that is the bhangra movement? Be a part of VIBC’s City of Bhangra Festival 2015 and catch some #BhangraLove yourself! For details on the City of Bhangra Festival, visit vibc.org or www.facebook.com/vancouverbhangra

he Sikh Research Institute has just announced their 13th Annual Sidak Leadership Retreat for 2015. Sidak is a distinctive leadership development program offered by the Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) for young adults and professionals seeking to increase their commitment towards the Sikh faith. It is a two-week intensive immersion in Sikh culture, language, values and community through understanding bani (scripture), tvarikh (history), and rahit (discipline). Due to popular demand, Sidak 2015 will be held once again by SikhRI at the Khalsa Centre Mission, BC, Canada, from July 18 – 31. The venue epitomizes the magnificence of Canada’s West Coast with mountains, stillness, woods and lakes – an ideal environment for introspection, reflection and learning. In addition to the core tracks “Sikhi 101” and “Sikhi 202”, this year, there is a brand new track “Gurubani 101” – a survey course that familiarizes students

“The journey has started, some of our Sidaker graduates will no doubt not only be world leaders but more importantly leaders that operate from a Sikh perspective in bringing about needed change in local and global communities.” ~ Inni Kaur, Board Chair, SikhRI with the structure, languages and themes of the Guru Granth Sahib. The course format encompasses lectures, discussions and activities. It provides tools and exposure to nomenclature for developing an approach to understanding Guru Granth Sahib. “I was absorbed with material, and taken back by the group of caring individuals I spent the last two weeks with,” said Iqbal Singh from California, said about his experience. “I’m looking forward to being back next year and highly recommend this camp to all Sikhs regardless of where you are in your journey.” Experienced SikhRI staff and board members facilitate these tracks and sessions. Each instructor brings his or her own experience, education and passion to the classroom sessions. Furthermore, the tracks and sessions are designed to provide a learning experience and also develop skill-sets through activities such as debates, speeches and presentations.

“This program as a whole helped me grow,” Sukhvir Kaur stated about his experience as a Sidaker. “For the past couple years I’ve been surrounded by people with similar views, Sidak allowed for a safe space where people with different views could come together and converse about Sikhi. Also, Sidak pushed me to think of my life, every part of my life through a Sikh lens – whether that’s my current/temporary job, my future career, or family life.” The bonds that the Sidakers form with their instructors and other learners are invaluable and will inspire them towards life-long education and activism long after the program ends. Inni Kaur, Board Chair of SikhRI, feels strongly in saying, “the journey has started, some of our Sidaker graduates will no doubt not only be world leaders but more importantly leaders that operate from a Sikh perspective in bringing about needed change in local and global communities.” For more information on specific tracks, leadership sessions, and enrollment process, please visit: www.sidak.org or email sidak@SikhRI.org

Curry
Ingredients •
4 cubes of frozen fenugreek leaves (or two bunches fresh)
•
2 potatoes cubed (400 gm)
•
4 green chillies
•
1 medium onion
•
2 cloves
•
½ inch cinnamon
•
Handful of coriander
•
1 tsp cumin seeds
•
1 inch ginger
•
1 cup thick natural yoghurt
•
1 tbsp butter
•
1 tbsp oil
•
Salt to taste
2
Heat the oil and fry these ingredients for 10 minutes until the green mixture turns a deeper shade and doesn’t smell raw. You may need to keep adding water to prevent the mixture from sticking to the pan.
3
Add the potatoes, and fry on high heat until translucent. Add in the yoghurt, a cup of water and cook covered on a medium heat until you can insert a fork into a piece of potato with some difficulty.
4
1
Grind the onion, whole spices, ginger, chillies and coriander to a smooth paste in a hand blender or food processor. If you don’t have one, just finely chop the onion, chillies and ginger.

Next stir in the methi (fenugreek leaves) and cook covered on a medium flame until the potatoes are cooked. This takes a good 20 minutes. You could always add parboiled potatoes, but they don’t taste as steeped in the spices.

Finally stir in the butter, simmer for five minutes and enjoy.

3 tbsp flavourless oil
1
Line a baking tray with foil or greaseproof paper and preheat oven at 200˚C (400 F). In a wok, bring 1½ tablespoons of oil to medium high heat. While it’s heating up, mix the powdered cumin, coriander, salt and chilli with two tablespoons of warm water.

2
When the oil is hot, add a pinch on asafoetida (hing). Then quickly pour in the spice paste. As it sizzles, toss in the cooked potatoes. Mash them up with your spoon, to make sure there are no massive lumps. After a minute, add a handful of peas. Stir well and then switch off the cooker.
3
Get the dough out of the fridge and roll it into a long fat sausage. Cut the dough into equal parts and roll each ball like you would for a roti – roll once, turn clockwise, then roll again, until you got roughly round and about a thick pastry. Slice through the middle in half; keep the belly end towards you. Fold the corners to the middle to make a triangular pocket.
4
Fill the pocket with your stuffing. Now sit the samosa down and seal the open edges. Continue with the remaining samosas, then brush with the remaining oil and bake for 15 minutes.

Bhindi Ingredients •
200 gm grated or shredded coconut
•
700 gm okra (lady finger)
•
2 tsp coriander powder
•
2 tsp cumin powder
•
1 tsp turmeric powder
•
½ tsp chilli powder
•
½ tsp garam masala
•
3 tbsp oil
•
Salt to taste
2
In a wok or large frying pan, heat two tablespoons of oil to high. When it is hot, stir in the sliced okra and all the spices apart from the garam masala.
3
Stir-fry for five minutes taking care not to break the okra. Then mix in the remaining oil and coconut, salt to your taste and fry for another two minutes until the spices are mixed through.
4
1
Wash the okra in a colander under a cold water tap and leave to dry. This will get rid of the slime inside. When it’s dry, slice off the tip and the ends, and cut each one into 1.5 cm pieces.

Now lower the flame to medium, add about three to four tablespoons of hot water, cover and cook for about 5-10 minutes until the grated coconut has softened. If the water dries up early just add two tablespoons more at a time. The okra should remain whole, but squish easily between your fingers.
5
Finally mix in the garam masala, salt and serve hot with parathas.

Heat the oil on high and when hot, add cloves, cardamoms, cinnamon and bay leaves. As they sizzle up, add the sugar and let it caramelize into a lovely red colour.
3
Take the pan off the flame for a minute and mix in the milky yoghurt. Lower the heat to a low to medium and put the pan back on. Don’t worry if the milk mixture splits.

Stirring the mixture well, add in the cauliflower. Cover the pan until the florets are soft. This should take 5 –10 minutes. Take the lid off and add the green chillies. Crispy
Sumac
Okra
“Sumac is a Middle Eastern spice made from beautiful dried crimson berries that have a sweet, sour and almost lemony flavour. You can always substitute it with your favourite garam masala if you can’t find it, although it doesn’t have the same flavour!”
Ingredients •
3 tbsp vegetable oil or light olive oil
•
200 g (7 oz) okra, thinly sliced
•
2 tbsp gram (chickpea) flour or plain flour
•
1 tsp ground turmeric
•
½ tsp chilli powder
•
1 tbsp ground sumac (Substitute: garam masala)
•
Pinch of sea salt
86
2015 VAISAKHI
By Anjali Pathak
1
Heat the oil in a large, shallow frying pan. Sprinkle the okra with the flour, turmeric and chilli powder, and toss together well so that they are all evenly coated.
2
Test the temperature of the oil by dropping in a little pinch of flour – it should sizzle. Add the okra to the pan and fry for a few minutes, moving them around frequently, until they are light golden brown and crispy. Be careful, as they burn easily, so turn down the heat if you need to.
3 4
Drain on kitchen paper and sprinkle over the sumac with a good pinch of sea salt. Taste and adjust the flavourings you need to. Serve hot with a chilled drink for a wonderful party snack.

1
Gently boil the lentils in a large saucepan of cold water and stir in the turmeric and black cardamom pods – this will add a subtle smoky flavour. Allow to cook for around 45 minutes, or until the lentils have softened and started to break down.
2
Once the lentils have softened, turn down the heat and make the tadka. Gently heat the oil in a frying pan and add the cinnamon sticks, green cardamom pods and cloves. When the cardamoms have turned white and the heads of the cloves have swollen, you are ready to stir in the mustard and cumin seeds. When they are sizzling, stir in the spring onions, chillies, garlic and ginger.
3 4
After a minute, stir through the tomatoes and turn off the heat. Pour the tadka into the dal so that it floats on top. Season with salt, sugar and lemon juice. Finally, stir through plenty of chopped fresh coriander and serve with some rice or fresh bread for the ultimate comfort food.

Mix the Greek yoghurt and mango pulp together in a jug. Then place in the middle of a clean muslin or thin tea towel.
•
Bring the ends of the tea towel together and tie them up. Then leave to hang on the tap in the kitchen sink, through a hook or any peg with a bowl underneath to catch dripping liquid. Soak the saffron in a tablespoon of warm milk.
•
Leave this for a couple of hours, then gently squeeze the remaining liquid out. Then, place it back in the jug and stir through the icing sugar. Peel and crush the cardamom seeds, stir these through along with the crushed cardamom and saffron milk. Measure into four dessert glasses.

Chocolate
Barfi
By Chef Mallika Basu Ingredients •
1 cup milk powder
•
¼ cup golden caster sugar
•
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
•
½ cup water
•
¼ cup ghee
•
Powdered pistachio
•
½ tsp cardamom powder
Sprinkle the cardamom powder into the mix. Gently mix this for another five minutes, making sure there is no sticking on the bottom of the pan. •
Then switch off the flame and spread on a plate lined with baking paper. The mix should spread beautifully. You can also use a palette knife to smooth the top and ensure an even spread. Let it cool for about 10 minutes and then place in the fridge with a cling film cover to chill.
•
In about an hour, cut the burfi into diamond shapes, and gently peel them off the baking paper. Turn whatever scraps are left into flattened discs for pedas.
•
Sprinkle these simple chocolate burfi with powdered or crushed pistachios, and press raisins/cashewnuts into the chocolate peda. You can keep these for up to a week in the fridge, in an airtight container. They are amazing with cinnamon ice cream or frankly, just eaten on their own.

In the meantime, mix the milk and cocoa powders in a bowl. When the syrup is ready, lower the heat to a simmer and stir in the powders, the ghee and the remaining water. 2015 VAISAKHI

At the centre of Sikh teaching about equality is the sacred food service known as Langar.

angar is basically a free meal served in a Gurdwara. Typically, there is a kitchen adjoining the Gurdwara where the food is prepared. It is called Guru ka Langar which means community kitchen. In the Langar, people from all sects of society are welcome. There is no bias of caste, colour, creed, religion or social

status. In a Langar hall, everyone sits in the same line or row (also known as pangat) and enjoy their food as one group. This practice of sitting and having food together was started by Guru Nanak Dev to put an end to the caste system and refrain from offending any one person; it also provides rationale as to why the food in a Langar is always vegetarian.

Another interesting thing to note is that the food in the Langar is prepared by sewadars or volunteers. This is called Langar Sewa, which is followed very religiously.
LANGAR MAKING RULES There are some rules that are followed while making Langar, like the sewadars must wash their hands before they start cooking and are not allowed to taste the food while making it. The food is always vegetarian and kept simple. Once the Langar is ready, a small portion of each dish is placed before Sri Guru Granth Sahib and a prayer called ‘Ardas’ is performed. It is a prayer to thank God for his blessings. After the ‘Ardas’, the food is put back in the pots they were taken from, as it is believed that the God has blessed the food.
SERVING OF THE LANGAR After the Langar is prepared and Ardas is performed, it is ready to be served to people. When serving the food the sewadar’s head is always covered. He or she serves the food without bias and everybody is served equal portions. Cleanliness
104
2015 VAISAKHI
and hygiene is the topmost priority not only while cooking Langar but while serving it as well. The people who serve wait for everybody to be served before they themselves sit down to eat. The servers make sure not to touch the plates of those they serve with their serving utensils. Also, it is important to never leave any leftovers in your plate after the food has been consumed. The Langar has a major significance in Sikhism. Everybody gets together to serve and prepare the Langar irrespective of their caste, creed, sex, religion and social status. Whether you are rich or poor, this mindset is all left behind once you enter the Gurdwara premises. It is more of a duty towards humankind as sitting together to have food brings a feeling of oneness.

The experiences of one can intensify the experiences of the other, and together they can create a unique piece of art. For the Singh Twins, their lifestyle made the decision to work together as artists something natural rather than an act of circumstance. “Being the same age and having an identical cultural upbringing and education means that we have always done everything together, shared the same experiences and outlook in life, and developed the same interests. So our decision to work together as artists was a natural progression.” Born in the UK, the Singh Twins had a childhood that concentrated heavily

The Singh Twins have achieved a long-time dream of receiving the honour of an MBE by the British Queen in 2011 for their work with Indian contemporary art
and significant contributing to textiles. This piece of art doesn’t stop there, as it also explores the impact that trade in Indian textiles has had on world politics and culture. They have even more in store for the future than this piece. They explain, “Our other project is a public commission, uncovering the forgotten history of the presence of Indian troops in the south of England who, as soldiers of the British Empire, were stationed in the New Forest during World War 1. In addition, we are also developing ideas for creating a Singh Twins label for home interior décor and fashion accessories featuring our art. So, over the past year, we have been working on designing a range of high end products such as silk scarves, home textiles, fine china, tiles, and jewellery. This new direction for our work has recently been further encouraged by our collaboration with designer Tarun Tahilliani, whose amazing Spring Summer 2015 Collection is inspired by our artwork.” The Singh Twins have enjoyed their artwork being displayed in several institutes and have even achieved a longtime dream of receiving the honour of an Member of the Order of Bristish Empire
(MBE) by the British Queen in 2011 for their work with Indian contemporary art. They will also be receiving an honorary degree later this year from the University of Chester for their amazing contributions to British art. One day, they hope to display their art at the Tate Britain or Tate Modern galleries, as well as have their work officially recognized by India’s government for its efforts in promoting Indian cultural heritage. Their work has brought them several showings around the world, many awards, and a few revelations that have deepened their understanding and respect of their heritage and how they may shape it for others for years to come. When asked about individuality in their artwork, the twins admitted that it can be tough to determine who created what. “Although most people cannot distinguish between our individual styles, there are differences which perhaps take a more discerning eye to notice. Having said that, after a while, even we forget sometimes and can’t tell who has contributed what on a particular canvas! Generally, one of us has a more precise, tight style of painting and drawing, whilst the other is less restricted and has a more free and fluid style.” 2015 VAISAKHI

rom an early age, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s sister Bebe Nanaki recognized the fact that her younger brother, who eventually went on to establish the Sikh religion, was not an ordinary human being. In fact, unlike many others, who didn’t realize this truth until later, she knew that he was on earth to carry out an important mission. As his sister and first devotee, she realized it was his mission to spread the message of Waheguru (God) and she not only followed and believed

Reflecting on Sikh history, there is no doubt that Bebe Nanaki played a pivotal role in helping shape many aspects of her brother’s life. From standing up for him and supporting him when their father did not understand his young son’s noble and spiritually inclined thoughts and actions, to helping arrange his marriage and requesting her husband to find him a job, Bebe Nanaki did it all. Besides all this, she also played a key role in helping Guru Nanak Dev Ji fulfill

his spiritual endeavors. “I think it’s important to remember that Bebe Nanaki’s role in spreading Sikhi was that she moved many obstacles, which hindered Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life and in the way of preaching his message,” explains Bhupinder Kaur Biln of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey. One of the obstacles that Biln is alluding to is the Guru having to leave behind his wife and two sons while he travelled around the world. Bebe Nanaki “really wanted [Guru Nanak Dev Ji] to go out and preach because she knew that he wasn’t just an ordinary person. She knew that what he preached was truth and that it connected to Waheguru (God) and that it would help people because at that time, people were into so many rituals…she knew that he never turned his back on the truth so she [believed] that he could make a difference in people’s lives and get them detached from all these rituals that [they] were holding on to. So, when Guru Nanak Dev Ji planned to start his missionary work to spread his teachings around the world, Bibi Nanaki encouraged him to go [without any worries] and assured him that she would look after his family in his absence.” Biln adds that Bebe Nanaki also recognized her brother’s inclination towards music and showed her support towards him and his cause once again when she purchased a stringed instrument and gifted it to his companion Bhai Mardana, who accompanied him during his travels. This instrument, called a Rebab, was played by Bhai Mardana while Guru Nanak Dev Ji recited hymns in the praise of Waheguru. Interestingly enough, this method of showing praise and devotion towards Waheguru (God), which was started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and passed down through his successors, is still followed along with Sikhism’s other practices and teachings,

many of which were likewise observed and practiced by Bibi Nanaki back in the 16th century. Bebe Nanaki “did follow [Guru Nanak’s teachings of earning a] truthful, honest living, she helped the needy and she was a
good neighbourhood person. She was truly inspiring and showed what it meant to be a sister as well,” says Biln. Reflecting on the relationship that the brother and sister shared, Biln adds, “They had a very strong trustworthy, truthful and honest relationship…[She was] almost like a mother with him. And she was very protective and respectful of him. And I think Guru Nanak Dev Ji was very respectful of Bebe Nanaki as well.” Indeed, throughout her life, Bebe Nanaki took on many roles and responsibilities. While she was a good daughter and a wife, she was also known as a helpful neighbour. Still, perhaps the role that she is most remembered for is that of an understanding, supportive and encouraging sister and devotee who had a major part in helping her guru and brother Nanak Dev Ji spread his message, knowledge and teachings related to the Sikh faith.

Sikh Gurus T
he word ‘Guru’ in Sanskrit means teacher, religious person or saint. However, in Sikhism, ‘Guru’ refers to the descent of divine guidance to humankind provided by the ten enlightened masters. These ten Sikh Gurus founded the religion, starting in 1469 with Guru Nanak and ending with Guru Gobind Singh in 1708. After that, it refers to the Sikh Holy Scriptures as Guru Granth Sahib. The Gurus are widely regarded as the embodiment of one guiding light which passed from one Guru to the next, and which now resides in the Holy Scriptures. The order of the ten enlightened Gurus is as follows: Guru Nanak Dev (1469 to 1539) Founder of Sikh faith; apostle of peace, unity and true infinite; possessed divinity and religious authority; first guru of modern thinkers in India; created Langar, free kitchen, for all people; teachings are in the Guru Granth Sahib; his philosophies and teachings were enlightened for his time, he criticized the social, political and religious injustices; advocated for equality between men and women; instructed disciples to face and tackle oppression, he knew this couldn’t be accomplished in his lifetime, so he appointed the practice of successors to lead Sikhs in their spiritual mission

The Three Golden Rules of
Sikh Panth
Sikhism is the universal world religion with the message of ‘One God’ for all men. It is a relatively new religion with practical approach founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 15th century. All Sikh Gurus gave one fundamental teaching that God is one and he is the supreme truth. He is the creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe. The 10 Gurus promoted universal brotherhood and taught mankind the importance of living in the world while attaining liberation. In their sacred scriptures, they set three golden rules for their followers – Kirt Karni, Naam Japna and Vand Shakna.
Kirt Karni Refers to work hard and earning an honest and truthful living. The Gurus wanted their Sikhs to be loyal and avoid cheating and lying.
Naam Japna Means meditation on God’s name. Meditations keeps one truthful, humble and in high spirits. Be absorbed in the beauty of the creator. Nam Japna is a stateof-mind, in which an individual aligns with the creator’s energy and becomes in touch with the infinite.
Vand Shakna Means to share, and Sikhs should share their earnings with those in need, thus they are expected to donate their surplus into a separate treasury so can be used to help the needy. According to the Sikh religion, every individual should contribute 1/10th (also called daswandh) of his income for such projects.
