What is your favourite Diwali food or snack? I love homemade karanjis (filled with jaggery and coconut) and chaklis.
Diwali is also a time for fashion, what is Diwali dressing for you? Lehenga cholis’s are my favourite. Wear materials that look dressy, but are light and comfortable.
I love wearing gold jewellery or diamond sets during Diwali.
There are a lot of trends associated with Diwali like card parties, themed Diwali parties and so on. Do you follow any of these trends? Yes, we have played cards during Diwali and I have also won a couple of them. Betting money to these games makes it more fun. Also Housie is the most favourite game in our group. We definitely have one Housie session.

Style tip – Festivals are hectic, so wear comfortable footwear and don’t let those heels injure you.
What are your views on an eco-friendly Diwali? I personally believe that the commercialisation of Diwali has made the festival of lights into a festival of noise, creating air or sound pollution. Hence, I prefer burning oil lamps and light electrical light arrangements to celebrate the festival.

Despite of having no pedigree in the film industry, my journey has been smooth and lucky. Films always found me from the start and I did not have to approach any one for work. I was choosy and had the right to choose work of my comfort. I have worked with the best of top filmmakers. Some of my milestones have been working with Shah Rukh Khan; winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for Vivah; becoming legendary painter MF Hussain’s muse; winning the Stardust Best Actress Award for Shyam Benegal’s Welcome to Sajjanpur; and recently working so closely with Amitabh Bachchan in Satyagraha.

he star-studded galaxy of Bollywood shines brightly amidst the glittering lights of Diwali. The so-called divas bask in the aura of parties hosted by them during this fiesta. In fact, Diwali parties have become a trade affair in tinsel town, to host and to even attend. Be it the Bachchans, the Kapoors, the Shettys or the Khans – each has their own brand of signature parties, which broadly marks the revelry of Diwali for the residents of Bollywood. For the Bachchans, the celebrations are akin to the one seen in the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Grand and traditional are the

card session that starts at midnight goes on until the wee hours of the morning. A bevy of television and Bollywood stars attend the party. Shilpa Shetty, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan too, hosts similar parties. Salman Khan often brings in Diwali with aplomb at his Karjat farm house with family and friends. Supposedly, this year, the star is gearing up for some grand celebrations. “Salman loves to celebrate Diwali and this year it will be a grand affair for Salman for many reasons. His film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo releases during the festival, his sister Arpita is pregnant and it is also her first wedding anniversary around the same time. So the family plans to have a big party this year,” says a source close to the Khan-daan.

Interestingly, Diwali for most Bollywood celebs spells family time, which due to their hectic schedule is very limited. Like for the Dabangg gal Sonakshi Sinha. “Diwali is one festival that our whole family celebrates together. No matter in which part of the globe I am, I make it a point to come home for Diwali. There is a puja, followed by dinner at home or at our family friends’ homes. I don’t burst firecrackers but do burn one phuljhari to welcome Diwali, as it is said to be auspicious,” explains Sonakshi. For Sidharth Malhotra, Diwali is about good food and playing cards. “Diwali is the time when I binge to my heart’s content. I prefer to spend Diwali with my family in Delhi, where we all have a feast and play cards games the whole night.”
Undoubtedly, taash (card) parties are the most happening in B-town during the festival of lights. Dimple Kapadia every year religiously hosts her own party, which is solely dedicated to playing cards. Her gang of lady friends, apparently, gather together, fill in their glasses with their preferred spirits and spend hours playing cards. Often her daughter Twinkle Khanna and son-in-law Akshay Kumar join the card club. Well, be it at home with family or a flashy party with friends, B-town certainly knows how to welcome the festival with flamboyance and say Happy Diwali!

racing the origins of Diwali is taking a road down the history of India when Vedic literature was laying foundations for India’s spiritual growth. As time progressed, several accounts got associated with origins of this festival; the most widely known being Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom Ayodhaya with wife Sita and brother Lakshman, after completing 14 years of exile. Ayodhaya celebrated the return of their beloved king by lighting diyas and decorating

Firecrackers Are No Longer Necessary We may have exhausted ourselves with debates surrounding the impediments of burning fireworks excessively, but with extended awareness and receptiveness of youth, we have been able to slightly limit their unnecessary usage. What’s helpful is the intervention of authorities in curbing the hours and noise levels of fireworks. Eco-friendly firecrackers have surely given those enthusiasts a healthier option but we shouldn’t let it overtake the essence of this festival. Many families in India and abroad have instead started investing those funds towards orphanages

Another Reason for Partying Though not everyone, but a lot of people cannot absorb the festive spirit without bringing in the element of a party. What becomes of a party intended to celebrate Diwali in most cases is a platform to don the latest fashion or a gathering with the DJ mixing traditional tunes. For business associates, Diwali becomes an opportunity to cultivate contacts by sending gifts and sweets. Yes, it would be wrong to entirely negate practices that are embedding their role in this festival, however these practices should not take us away from the essence of Diwali which is, getting out of darkness and coming to light. Lighting diyas, cleaning your house and eating sweets are external reminders of what should be an internal process – cleansing your thoughts and entering a space of positivity.

Be it an elaborate song sequence or a fleeting glimpse, the lights of Diwali have always shone brightly in films, but one does crave for a bit more.
D
iwali and Bollywood go back a long way. However, Diwali’s affair with celluloid has been of two kinds – one when filmmakers look forward to Diwali to rake in the moolah for their potboilers, and other when this most celebrated festival finds

its moment of glory on-screen, either in a song or a scene. Yes, the grandest festival of light has been the least exploited on the screen. This, despite the fact that Hindi films are largely based on the central theme of the festival i.e. the victory of the good hero over the wicked villain. But one can’t refute the fact that even in its fleeting glimpses, Diwali has looked as beautiful on the film’s canvas as it does in real life, even in the black and white era. The film Nazrana (1961) stunningly captures the

Another evergreen classic song from that era ‘Kaise Diwali Manaye Hum Lala, Apna to Barra Mahine Diwala’, from the film Paigham (1959), humourously encapsulates the vibrancy of the festival. Starring comedian Johnny Walker, the song highlighted the plight of the poor and impoverished during the festival of lights, for whom, each festival is alike. Taking the opportunity of the festival theme, of bringing families together, director Karan Johar brought the opulence and glory of the festival on-screen in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie

Gham (2001). Replete with opulent costumes, diyas illuminating the complete household, family members praying together – the six-minute long title song does complete justice to the festive spirit. The arrival of son (Shah Rukh Khan) towards the end of the song, in some way, does symbolize the return of lord Rama back home after his exile. While the splendor of Diwali is often celebrated
on-screen, the festival has also provided a perfect milieu for tragedy too, in many films. Remember the 1972 film Anurag, which shows that an entire neighborhood comes together to celebrate Diwali, but the celebrations are masked by the sad knowledge that the young Satyajeet, who suffers from cancer is about to die. Talk of tragedy and the one song that comes to mind is ‘Aaye Hai Abke Saal Diwali’, the soulful song from Haqeeqat (1964) portrays the plight of soldiers away from their families during the

festive season. ‘Lakhon Tare Aasma Mein Magar’ from Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962), too deserves a mention here, as the song is not only meaningful but carries a lot of depth as it focuses on human suffering juxtaposed with festival of lights. Apart for celebrations and tragedy, Diwali with its loud reverberations of firecrackers can actually provide an ideal setting to hush a noisy crime scene in movies, however, not many have utilized it to its full potential, barring a few. One does recall director Prakash Mehra impressively using the backdrop of the bursting fireworks to stage the opening murder scene of Vijay Khanna’s parents in Zanjeer (1973), which led to the making of the

iconic angry young man of Bollywood – Amitabh Bachchan. Another crime scene that comes to mind is from the more recent Ek Villain (2014), where the film’s protagonist, Guru (Sidharth Malhotra), mercilessly kills a man in the midst of the traditional practice of burning Narakasura’s effigies in Goa. Mohit Suri does deserve credit for the symbolic using
of the legend of Naraka Chaturdashi in his film. Apart from these, the instances of Diwali in films have been many, where the festival made a guest appearance; however, a full-blown Diwali theme set in today’s time is still much awaited. Here’s hoping that next Diwali we don’t only have the box office ablaze with hits, but also the screen!

Crafts How to Make a Festival Lantern
STEP 1: Cut out a 7 by 14 inch rectangle of coloured cardsheet. Make it into a cylinder shape and stick the ends together. STEP 2: Then, for the cut-outs to be pasted on the cylinder, cut out cardsheet squares of size 4.5 inch. You will need at least 10-12 squares for the lantern. STEP 3: Stick together the opposite corners of the square sheets, overlapping the corners. Then, leaving a gap of at least 0.35 inch from the top and bottom edges, stick the squares on the cylinder next to each other till the cylinder is completely covered. STEP 4: For the base strips, use butter paper/tracing paper that is about 14 inch wide and 11-15 inch long, depending on how long you want the strips. Cut the strips leaving about 0.5-0.75 inch on top. 44 DIWALI 2015
Content and image courtesy: Blogs The Zing of My Life and Handful of Shadows.
STEP 5: Stick the strips to the cylinder by applying glue to the top edge. To give the lantern a more finished look, stick a colourful or sequin strip on the top and bottom edge of the cylinder. STEP 6: You can decorate the lantern further by adding colourful cut outs of either flowers, moons or other designs on the overlapping ends of the square. STEP 7: Lastly, attach a string at the top to hang the lantern from.

DIWALI FEATURE Diwali is the most celebrated festival of India. However, the multi-culture of the country has affixed many legends to the origin of the festival, which are as varied as the manner of its celebrations, but common to all of them is the theme of the triumph of good over evil.

he luminous yellow-orange flame exuding from the array of oil-lamps adds a warm glow to everything around and sets the quintessential mood for Diwali, symbolizing the spirit of good over evil and victory of light over darkness. However, while every Hindu proudly lights the lamps that signify the festival, owing to the cultural diversity of India, the legend behind them and its significance differ from state to state and so does the festive celebrations. Thus, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Diwali is celebrated in more than one way, with every community adding its own distinctive local touch to it but retaining the essence of the festival of lights.

Like in North India, Diwali commemorates the homecoming of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. The festivities that run over for five days begin with Dhanteras. The divine energies of Goddess Lakshmi – the creator of wealth, Lord Kuber – the distributor of wealth, and Lord Ganesha – the remover of obstacles, are worshiped on this day. The day is also considered auspicious to buy utensils, gold and silver.

Choti Diwali, the second day, takes the celebrations forward, where a small Rama puja is performed followed by singing bhajans and songs in his honour. However, the face of Choti Diwali changes as you move down South, where it is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi. It is a day of great significance, which again highlights the conquest of good over evil but with a different fable. A demon named Narakasura was beheaded by Krishna on this day and before dying the asura requested a boon that his death anniversary should be celebrated by all people on earth, and so Naraka Chaturdashi was born. South Indians usually celebrate the day by waking up early, lighting diyas and bathing with scented oils. The cleansing ritual signifies getting rid of laziness and the evil from our system. The day is also popular in Maha-

rashtra, where people use uthane (an ayurvedic paste) to bathe. In Goa, papermade effigies of Narakasura, are burnt at four o’clock in the morning and people return home to take a scented oil-bath. A slightly different version of the aforementioned legend, where instead of Lord Krishna, his wife Satyabhama killed the demon, is known as Kali Choudas in Gujarat, Rajasthan and few parts of Maharashtra. There is also a social significance in the festival of Choudas as it marks the time of the harvest. South Indians and Maharashtrians often cook mouth-watering delicacies prepared from pounded semi-cooked rice, which is taken from the fresh harvest of the season. Talking of Maharashtra, the Diwali celebration in this state actually begins with Vasubaras – a ritual of performing aarti

to a cow and its calf. The tradition symbolizes a woman’s gratitude towards cows for serving them and their children. The third day of Diwali – Lakshmi puja, is celebrated with grandeur across various regions of India. Generally, the traders do not make any payments on this day to preserve Lakshmi at home. In every household, cash, jewellery, and an idol of Lakshmi are worshiped. But, Bengalis, Oriyas, and Assamese celebrate this day as Kali puja. People light lamps in Kali Maa’s honour and in return, she promises a renewal of life and justice on earth. The festivities of Diwali continue with Padva or Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra and as Bali Padyami in the South. Bali Padyami commemorates the victory of God Vishnu in his dwarf incarnation Vamana, defeating Bali and pushing him
Statement on Diwali: Diwali is a time for families to come together and celebrate the triumph of light over dark, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Diwali, The Festival of Lights, has been a time for many thousands of British Columbians to celebrate our values of hope, friendship, and goodwill. Given the tragic incidents taking place in India, I want to extend my wishes for peace and harmony in Punjab. Diwali reminds us how fortunate we are to live in such a rich, multicultural society. Our diversity is the key to creating strong and vibrant communities all across British Columbia. When we live, work and celebrate together with mutual respect and harmony, there is nothing we cannot achieve. I wish all British Columbians a Happy Diwali.

to the nether world. But Bali was bestowed a boon by Vishnu to return to earth for one day to be honoured. Thus, Hindus celebrate this day in Bali’s honour. The farming community in Tamil Nadu celebrates this day by performing Kedar gauri vratam (worship of goddess Kedar-Gauri – a form of Parvati), and Go puja (worship of cow). The day is celebrated as Govardhan puja in the North, it is believed that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhana hill to save people and cattle from rain and floods on this day. Bhai Dooj marks the end of the five-day long festival, where sisters pray for their brothers’ happy life. Supposedly, after slaying Narakasura, Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She also affectionately applied tilak on Krish-

na’s forehead. South Indians celebrate the day as Yamadvitiya, after a legendary meeting between Yama the god of death and his sister Yamuna. Interestingly, while the above festivities sum up Diwali for Hindus, the Jain community celebrates the festival of lights to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira. Whereas, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas during Diwali – a day when Guru Har Gobind freed himself and Hindu Kings from Fort Gwalior, from the prison of the Mughal emperor, Jahangir, and arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Well, whether it’s the South Indians, North Indians, Maharashtrians, Bengalis or Sikhs, what matters is that each one celebrates the festival of light in it’s true essence i.e. victory of good over evil and spreading the light of hope.

Make your Diwali celebration green this year!

Your Guide to

iwali, the festival of lights, is definitely a time of joy and celebration. Lamps are lit, sweets are bought, gifts exchanged and families and friends come together. However, this auspicious event also has a darker side – it often causes air and noise pollution and leads to excessive consumption and waste – all strains on our environment. So this year, why not embrace a clean, green way to celebrate the festival of lights? Here are some tips on how to make your Diwali celebration eco-friendly, without sacrificing the fun. DIWALI 2015 61

Re-think firecrackers For most people, firecrackers are synonymous with Diwali and the bigger the firecrackers, the better the celebration. But this is also where the majority of the problem lies. According to IndiaParenting.com, crackers contain a number of pollutants such as lead, zinc, and cadmium, to a name a few. These are toxic to people and animals and tend to stay in the atmosphere for extended periods. Firecrackers also produce large quantities of smoke – which causes discomfort and respiratory problems, especially to those suffering from asthma or other respiratory conditions. Then, there’s the noise. Some crackers are extremely loud and sudden noises can sometimes cause temporary hearing loss, not to mention frighten young children and pets. To celebrate a green Diwali, cutting out crackers entirely would be ideal. But if you can’t stand the thought of going
62 DIWALI 2015
cold turkey, here are some alternatives. Buy eco-friendly firecrackers – made from recycled materials, they create less pollution. Choose firecrackers that illuminate instead of noise-maker bombs such as sparklers or anars. Plan to light firecrackers together with people from your neighborhood – community celebration causes less air and noise pollution than individual celebrations. Set a time limit (say, two to three hours of bursting crackers) and be sure to stick to it.
Decorate Wisely It’s impossible to imagine a festival of lights without lights. Most people illuminate their houses by stringing up fairy lights and switching on lights in every room, sometimes even during the day. This leads to a lot of power consumption and extremely high electricity bills.

For a green Diwali, stick with the traditional diyas – these earthen lamps require less quantity of oil and give light for at least three to four hours. Plus, they can be re-used. Just be sure to avoid painted ones as they have chemical colours. Another thing to consider is the rangoli. Instead of using artificial colours to create yours, go natural by turning to your kitchen. You can make an ecofriendly rangoli by using rice powder, legumes, and other spices. Another alternative is to use real flowers.
Go hand-made as much as possible Buying gifts for family and friends, items for that Diwali party, sweets – there’s no doubt that shopping has become an integral part of this festival. However, this excessive consumerism not only puts undue pressure on natural resources, but also blurs the true meaning of Diwali.

Not only is this greener, but it also adds a personalized touch. You could paint a picture or bake homemade sweets and goodies – the options are endless. But if you do decide to buy gifts, opt for those made from organic materials. Perhaps a potted plant or dry fruits? You can also gift hand-made cards – or better yet, send e-cards. Finally, avoid gift paper and shiny plastic wraps when you’re wrapping those presents. Save trees and instead, wrap your presents with newspaper. Get creative – use the comic strip section, maybe decorate it with paint. Calendars with pictures are also a great option.

AFestive
Makeover For Your Home! BY Shweta Kulkarni
The arrival of the festive season makes you crave for everything fresh and new, even your home screams for a lively makeover. And while it’s not feasible to splurge on the renovations every year, a few tweaks here and there can work perfectly well to add the Diwali cheer to your spaces without burning a hole in your wallet. Here’s how to go about it…
T
he festive season is in full swing. Diwali, the festival of lights, means family pampering, crackers, sweets, card parties, but home décor or festive home makeovers top the to-do list. While each of you will be striving to make it grand; we have come up with a few lovely ways to decorate your home this Diwali. Here’s how you can plan ahead and re-create much loved spaces of your home this festive season.
DIWALI 2015 67
Let There Be Light
Deck Up The Walls Diwali is about bright colours, and while you can’t paint your pad every year, there are few cost-effective options to brighten your spaces. Instead of painting the whole house, you can opt to paint a single wall in a bright colour and it is sure to set in the festive mood immediately. If painting is not the option, then go in for wall decals. Not only are they inexpensive but they are also excellent to dress up your dull walls. There is a wide range of designs available in the market to choose from and they are very easy to use. A great painting can also come in handy to breathe some new life on your plain wall.
68 DIWALI 2015
Come on, the festival is about lights and more the lights, merrier the environment. However, that doesn’t mean you go about fixing new light fixtures and installing different kinds of lights. Grab some economical tea light holders, coloured candles, table lamps and place them in select corners of your house. You can also hang lanterns or simply change your lampshade. A bit of DIY creative techniques can come in handy too – paint and create your own centerpiece for floating diyas or paint empty glass bottles, fill it with a string of fairy lights and see the magic of Diwali set in.

Bring in Freshness
The ideal way to set the festive mood is to change your upholstery, but not necessarily by spending a bomb. Simply adding some bright and colourful cushions, and replacing the curtains can change the entire look and feel of the place. If you are creatively charged, your old silk saris or dupattas can make some impressive window scarves to add the festive spunk to your house. The sari borders can also be used as runners for dining tables. You can even embellish old pillow covers by adding motifs or lace, which are easily available in the market.
Declutter Lastly, no matter how much you spend or don’t spend, beautify or don’t beautify, your house will lack the festive splendor if it’s cluttered. Try to discard all the unnecessary things and set the perfect festive atmosphere. After all doesn’t goddess Laxmi like to visit a clean, clutter-free house? Just a few amendments and you shall be ready to proudly throw open the doors of your festive house for your guests this Diwali.

Re-do The Furnishing
The best possible way to revamp your home is to bring in some fresh flowers. Buy simple tall glass vases and fill them up with roses, orchids, carnations etc. They can be even used as centerpieces, which are sure to give the house a festive look. You can also bring in some potted plants to add a dash of green and lift the look of the entire space.

If Indian wear is not up your alley, a pleated skirt and attached pallu looks graceful – a three-quarter sleeved blouse with a monochromatic colour palette gives out this silhouette a timeless appeal. Add some flavour to a simple flared or sharara-style bottom and choli or pin tuck/kimono style kurti.

Gold-pleated saris are the order of the day, these pre-pleated drape saris are dramatic, light, wrinkle-free, classy, easy to tuck in and fashionable. Pair them up with brocade blouses.

The high-low Anarkali suits, cowl drape anarkali suit, floor length one piece with high slits in the front or sides, or full length anarkalis are still in vogue. You can experiment by donning an anarkali set with a belt.

Opt for palazzo pants, cigarette pants or embroidered Patiala pants or tulip pants/ dhoti pants or sharara pants with cape style tunics. Classic gold or metallic pants or ivory zari work bottoms are the talk of the town.

Take the time this Diwali to include yourself among the beautiful traditions
D
iwali, the festival of lights, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. Many will celebrate with dances, street lighting, a showcase of fireworks, and even plays. The women will be wearing beautiful sarees with fine jewellery and some may even apply mehndi to their hands. With all these beautiful traditions, it only makes sense to include yourself in the beautifying process. No matter how much beauty advice you get, the importance of a healthy lifestyle needs to be highlighted, and a large part of that includes what we consume in terms of food and drink.

Another tip for brighter eyes is using a beige eyeliner and lining your water line. It’ll look natural and you’re eyes will appear sharper. • Mash it up and apply to the face and neck. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, than rinse off with cold water.
Brighten up those eyes Of course photos will be taken, so apply an eye brightener under your eyes. Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener is a good product. Especially when you are tired and have an event to attend, this product is a lifesaver. Before your concealer, apply a dot of the eye brightener under each eye and pat until it’s all absorbed, wait a few minutes for it to dry before you apply your concealer. The combination of a brightener and concealer is great for covering dark circles.

Add some blush! By adding blush to your look, you instantly create dimension and create a radiant appearance (in moderation). If you want your blush to look natural, pinch your cheeks and where it turns pink or red, that’s where you would apply it. Both cream and powder-based blush will work. Fresh Sorbet Blush by The Body Shop is perfect to bring colour and a healthy-looking glow to the skin. Its refreshing sorbet texture keeps your skin looking beautiful.

or a Hindi film buff, going for a Bollywood film is as much a part of the festivities of Diwali, as lighting oil lamps and decorating the house with colourful rangoli. The festival of lights is incomplete sans that big Diwali release that Bollywood religiously churns out year after year to brighten the festive air. Arriving with our festive dose of entertainment this year is none other than ‘Prem’ aka Salman Khan, who after the Eid Dhamaka – Bajrangi Bhaijaan, is all geared up to set the box office on fire this Diwali with his grand family entertainer

audiences to make PRDP a part of their family celebrations. “PRDP is for everyone with family & wanting to have one. Sabke Families mein problem hoti hai, lekin woh khush naseeb hai jinki family hoti ha. This is one of the most beautiful film that Sooraj/Rajshri & me have done together in every aspect” (sic) – wrote the superstar on his twitter page. With Salman apparently playing the double role of a prince and a commoner in the film, and a specially choreographed action sequence in a Sheesh Mahal, PRDP is sure to illuminate this Diwali with its visual opulence. Diwali usually spells war between two big films wanting to release simultaneously during the festive holidays, however, PRDP gets lucky to get a solo subsequent week to rake in the moolah. But the weekend post that shall be taken over by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s ‘matargashti’ as the ex-lovers come together for Tamasha. Be prepared to extend the festivities further and travel with Ranbir and Deepika to the picturesque French island – Corsica. The film, that narrates the story of Tara and Ved, who decide to not reveal their real identities to each other and have the
time of their lives, is sure to make you fall in love with their free-spirited souls. Film’s director Imtiaz Ali has a very interesting philosophy behind the film, he says, “Sometimes the same kind of events occur in life and then we blame our circumstances for it and say that this is how life is. You never become who you really are as an individual. And the same story repeats for you unless you take control of your life. You change that by saying that you’re not enjoying matters and that you’ll make your own endings in life, that’s when a different kind of ‘tamasha’ takes place.” Well, if not the philosophy, the crackling on-screen chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika is certain to keep the fireworks of Diwali going.
