1 Tell us about your journey from Punjab, India, to Canada.
Before I came to Canada in 1973, I was active in the student union movement in India. I was the general secretary of the student union. I was involved at the local level and dealt with issues faced by the students regarding their tuition fees and similar other problems. 2 Did you always know that you wanted to be a politician?
I never thought about being part of the political system here in Canada. I didn’t think about it but coming here as a young student with knowledge of Indian politics, it became a part of my normal thinking to be aware of the political issues going around in India. 3 Tell us about your political journey in Canada.
I’ve been involved with the party since 1975, but wasn’t overly active. I was very much inspired by Dave Barrett who was the Premier at that time. I came to know him very well and we became friends. So I became quite involved with the Party at that time; Penny Priddy was the MLA for Surrey-Newton. I was the president of our constituency’s riding. I’ve been on board with the trade union movement right from day one. I was the head of the collective bargaining department with the Hospital Employees union. In 2001

mean to you?
It’s an honor. It’s a milestone not only for me but also for our community. There was a time when people of colour were not even allowed to vote. We were not allowed to go to the legislative building; people of colour were kept out. The right to vote was taken away, and then Komagata Maru happened. So since 1895, our pioneers had to struggle to make sure that we, the next generation, are able to enjoy the fruit of their struggles. That’s what has allowed us to be where we are today. 5 How did the BC NDP party and your colleagues react when news about you being elected as Speaker of the legislature was announced?
I was very humbled with the amount of support that I received - from the NDP colleagues and also equally from the opposition parties. They openly and publicly congratulated me for being elected the first South Asian Speaker to the legislative

looking after as Speaker?
My first concern is that during these challenging times it is more important than ever that the MLAs of all parties are able to work together constructively to support British Columbians. The absolute priority would be the health and safety of MLAs and staff in order to maintain physical distancing. We only allow limited number of MLAs in the chamber at one time and the rest of them participate virtually from their home. Hopefully that will change with the vaccination and more people will be able to come in person to the legislature when we start the next session in March. My utmost responsibility in the legislature is that all MLAs and our staff work safely and constructively with each other. 8 As a founding member of the B.C. Organization to Fight Racism, how much work do you feel needs to be done in the political sphere
What’s your message to young people interested in pursuing a career in politics?
10
I am really pleased to say that since I was elected as Speaker, I have received so many messages from young people about how excited they were and how honoured they felt that finally there’s a future for them. I’m going to be reaching out to young British Columbians to encourage them to be part of political activities at the local level. Somehow there is a negative feeling about politicians in people’s minds. All the policies regarding education, tuition, seniors or affordability is done at the legislative level, so it’s important for the young people to understand that and to participate actively to make a change. If they’re not happy with the current situation, they have the power to change it. And if I can be of any help, I’ll be more than happy to assist them.

He went on to take the Broadcasting program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), which was instrumental in launching him into the broadcasting world. “At the time, there were no dastaar-dhari (turbaned) Sikhs in media. Fast forward, 22 years later, it is still kind of the same. I wanted to pursue it anyways. I wanted to find my voice and way.”, accounts Hundal. As he aspired, Hundal did more than just find his own way; he also paved the way for others. Internships at CTV, and a job at Channel M kickstarted his career, getting his foot through the door. The first person of colour to take on this title, Hundal will be spearheading one of the most influential newsrooms in the province. With over 15 years of media experience, Hundal’s professional progress is a result of his passion for the news business and sheer hard work. Having grown up in the Lower Mainland attending school at Princess Margaret Secondary, Hundal recalls, “I’ve always had an interest in news and current affairs since I was a young. Age 14, on the Congo-Uganda border, 1966:
About forty-five minutes later, one of the border guards exited the hut. Clutching a bottle in one hand and his rifle in the other, he veered toward me. I sat motionless in the old truck. A couple other guards, laughing, stumbled out of the hut after him. Some of the women paused to watch. It was later now, and the little children had vanished. “Hey. You!” he yelled at me through the open driver’s side window, waving the bottle, sloshing the liquid. “Come out!
Come with me!” “Why?” I asked. “Where? Where are we going?” “Get out of the lorry and I will show you!” he barked, swigging from the bottle. I slid off the bench seat and jumped down onto the dirt road. He pointed to a girl, about my age, leaning against the hut. She was smiling at me.

Hundal adds, “I knew, in my head, that once we establish something, opportunities are created for others I didn’t want to sit there and hog a seat. This is a breeding and training ground.” For him,
asked if his identity has ever been a challenge, Hundal responds, “To me, I always felt it was an advantage. You may not remember my name, but when I walked into the room, they would always remember me. Surely, you make an impression with all the other things – your thoughts, knowledge and thoughtfulness. That said, if you have a pool of candidates that try to look and sound exactly the same, how do you stand out? I used what I have to really propel me forward. It is an advantage for me, and I use it.” As time went on, Hundal extended into fostering relationships and mentorship. He earned his way into managing others in his subsequent roles, while building his network to get involved with even bigger things, such as the BC Leaders’ debate. Being able to showcase his skills on the leadership side contributed to him taking charge of more projects, as he then ventured into mainstream media. Needless to say, the media world can be a tough one. There are situations where obstacles are faced and there is bound to be a team of supporters and non-supporters, as is standard in any business or industry. you so you can use that experience. However, I’ve had great support from my bosses and the people that I’ve worked with. It takes a village to raise a child and without that village, there is only so much you can do.” When asked what his words of advice are to aspiring journalists or broadcasters looking to step into the field of media, Hundal boils it down to 3 points: 1. You need to have passion. 2. You must have the desire to work hard. 3. Journalism may not the most lucrative profession, especially in the beginning. You have to be passionate for a long time. Constantly improving yourself, bringing yourself and your experiences to the table, and being a critical thinker are key. There is a need to understand different perspectives and combat overgeneralizations to truly overcome the challenge of understanding people’s motivations. It is important to peel the layer and understand the nuances involved. Reflecting on his current role, Hundal finds it quite humbling that he is now in charge. He takes the responsibility quite seriously, as the first person of color, filling in for a seat formerly taken by Jill Krop, who was the first woman in the role. Evidently, many in BC have a deep passion and connection with the Global BC. On the other hand, Hundal does acknowledge, “It is no secret that there is an element of disconnect with media and many different communities. My goal is to grow so that all British Columbians feel that Global BC represents them. We are one. The station has been a leader in BC. We will continue to lead in a way that continues to strengthen the faith people have felt in the past.” As he moves forward, Hundal is eager and excited to tackle, head-on, the tremendous amount of work that lies ahead and is looking forward to the challenge. On the sidelines, he has the community cheering him on!

hile COVID-19 got most of us staying indoors and using virtual platforms for our work and other needs, a young UBC student utilized that time to help tutor kids. Adrija Chakrabarti is the co-founder and director of Mentoring the Stars Foundation. The student-led nonprofit organization’s mission is to provide high-quality, no-cost tutoring for any British Columbian family that seeks it, as well as providing volunteering opportunities to older students and recent university graduates. “Our service includes tutoring in any school subject and is inclusive to all families regardless of language barriers and learning disabilities/ accommodations required by a student,” says Chakrabarti, a fourth-year Behavioural Neuroscience student at UBC. The other co-founders of the organization are Jennifer Lo and Kassandra Heilbron.

The tutorial idea originally stemmed from a similar initiative in UCLA (Lo’s university) during that time called “Tutoring for Heroes,” that focused on providing free tutoring for families of healthcare workers. The co-founders wanted the Lower Mainland/BC to also have the option for a service that was open to all families. “We believed that any family should be able to sign up, given the hardships presented to everyone during this time - especially for parents of children with learning disabilities trying to learn online, those experiencing financial struggles to afford quality tutoring, and students learning special subjects such as French, where it is hard for parents to administer the content to their kids if they are not already acquainted with the subject,” shares Chakrabarti. The process is quite simple. All families and potential volunteer tutors, referred to as “mentors,” are required to fill out an online form to register with the service indicating their background, needs and availability. All of the volunteers are then required to complete a criminal record check and undergo an interview, as well as review of their past tutoring experience. There is a dedicated recruitment team who ensures that each mentor and family is properly matched to one another. “For example, if a family requests to have a mentor for their child who is also able to speak another language, such as Mandarin or Punjabi, to ease communication with parents, we will fulfill that request and pair their child accordingly,” explains Chakrabarti. The Foundation also has mentors specialized in learning disabilities and French immersion. The commonly used platform is Zoom, though families and mentors are welcome to use whatever remote platform they are comfortable with. “The service is open to any elementary or high school student from BC of any grade level/ subject/age! We teach whatever subjects we have

available mentors for, and have our volunteer registration open to any volunteer proficient in any K-12 school subject. Currently our most popular subjects are Math, English, and French,” informs Chakrabarti. Volunteers can also participate by taking on administrative tasks like assisting with developing resources for other tutors, among others. Currently they have 187 tutors and 379 students participating in the service, and are administering over 500 hours of free tutoring per week to the community since the inception of the program in March 2020. Chakrabarti reports that “collectively we have delivered over 8,000 hours of tutoring, mostly concentrated throughout the Lower Mainland region but also have participants from Vancouver Island and rural communities in BC as well.” The initiative has received lots of positive feedback from parents, students and educators. The “A Project” by UBC Alumni, which is aimed at providing local volunteer opportunities to UBC graduates, recently reached out to the Foundation for a partnership. “We have also received funding from the Canada Service Corps “Taking it Global” federal grant program and we are a Google for Non-Profits partner,” discloses Chakrabarti. The co-founders plan to continue with the service into the future as they have realized that the concept of virtual no-cost tutoring is quite appealing to people, putting the pandemic aside. “We strive to become a widely known resource available for all British Columbian families and will continue to expand our program hoping to one day reach every corner of our province, and also putting a greater focus on targeting marginalized communities that would appreciate the service, such as lowerincome neighbourhoods like the Downtown Eastside, as well as Indigenous groups,” says Chakrabarti in conclusion.

fter experiencing some quiet sports in 2020, this year promises loud cheer and excitement in the field right here in BC. Surrey’s Juvraj Kooner, fondly known as Juvy, has signed a three-year contract with S.C. Braga to play professional soccer in Portugal. S.C. Braga plays in the Primeira Liga, Portugal’s top soccer league. This is a milestone not only for British Columbia but also for BC’s South Asian community as there is a lack of South Asian pro players in the sport. Additionally, Kooner is an excellent example of a hardworking, dedicated South Asian youth who is focused on his goal and working towards achieving it. DARPAN aims to highlight the good that is happening in the community instead of being too consumed with the bad. By highlighting positive stories of our youth, DARPAN aspires tostand strong against the negative portrayal of South Asian youth that is often seen in media.

Soccer’s newest pro player is excited for this chapter in his life and proclaims it to be his most memorable moment so far. “It feels really good as this [playing professionally] has been a goal I have been striving towards since a young age,” says Kooner who just turned 19. Kooner began soccer at the age of four and played for local teams in Vancouver. At the age of 11, he started playing with Surrey United in the BC Soccer Premier League; at 13 in 2015, he joined the Whitecaps FC pre-residency program and continued to play there for two years. His advancement from being a Canadian soccer player to playing the sport professionally actually began in April 2017. Kooner was playing in a tournament in Toronto when he was first introduced and scouted by Länk Football Group. The Toronto-based academy creates opportunities for youth footballers to showcase their talent to scouts and coaches from premier European clubs, and helps players develop a clear path to a rewarding professional football career. In July 2017, Länk sent Kooner to Stockholm, Sweden, to play with AIK U16. “I trained with them for a season but was unfortunately too young at the time to sign any contracts with the club,” recalls the midfielder/

His next steps are working towards getting an opportunity with the first team. “I’m looking forward to developing as a player and as a person, and playing my first game with S.C. Kooner reveals that his biggest challenge will be communicating with his teammates as there is a language barrier. “Over quarantine, I have been working on improving my Portuguese and hopefully, by listening to my teammates I will improve,” he discloses. Kooner’s growth and recent signing has not only opened international doors for the 19-year-old but also for other youngsters wanting to excel in the sport. Kooner has created a path for South Asian youth who dream of playing professionally someday – not just soccer but any sport they are passionate about. “Growing up, and even currently, there is very little South Asian representation within pro athletes. I believe that my success as a pro player can inspire youth to contour to work hard and that they can achieve higher positions regardless of their background and upbringing,” states the young achiever who graduated from Burnsview Secondary School in Delta in 2019. He believes that he is motivating Surrey youth to explore and achieve their dreams in sports as his upbringing is very similar and relatable to many other kids who live in the area. “I think that when youth see what I have accomplished, they will also believe that it is possible for them to achieve their goals as well.” Kooner’s advice to youth and those hoping for a career in sports is: “Continue to believe in yourself and your abilities. Always work hard and strive to be excellent in everything you do.” Juvraj Kooner’s success story is a positive representation of the talent and dedication of South Asian youth in BC. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
“I’m richer this year!” The Skinny You are a sexy, passionate person. You have solid, old-fashioned values, especially about family. You love designer labels, and can spot a Louis Vuitton at 10 paces. In a curious way, you’re old when you’re young and young when you’re old. You’re stoic and can handle pressure because you know it is character building. “No pain, no gain.” You like respect, punctuality, good manners and money in the bank. (Can’t argue with that!).
Career and Money Good news! This year you will get richer! You will find a better paying job or you will increase your wealth and your assets in some way. If you don’t earn more money, then money will come to you in other ways, but you will get richer. However, you will work hard for what you achieve. (Ironically, you might feel financially insecure even if you aren’t.) This year is also easier because the difficult influences of 2020 are gone. (It was very hard for you in the last few years.).
Relationships and Romance All your relationships will improve this year because you feel less stressed. (This year it feels like a weight lifted off your shoulders.) As a consequence of this, you will be more gracious and grateful – especially to those who are closest to you. Your self-image and self-confidence will grow, which means you can look forward to improved relations in every way.
Home Suite Home We all put on our “game face” in public because we want to make the best impression possible. This is why we often treat strangers better than our loved ones, which is sad to say but true. But this year, your stress will be much reduced! You will be happier. When you are happier, relations with family members are happier. Joy is always contagious.

Pisces
(January 20 – February 18)
(February 19 – March 20)
“With Jupiter in my sign, I have luck and good fortune..” The Skinny You’re unique, original, independent-thinking and hard to predict. You’re very modern and many of you are high tech -- born 50 years ahead of your time. You care about society and what is happening to the planet. You are a superb networker and know how to rally your troops to fight for reforms. You value friendships and are a great friend to others. You have an excellent mind and many of you are scientists and computer geeks. You can also be impossibly sexy and alluring!
Career and Money This year is one of the best years for Aquarius in over a decade because lucky Jupiter is in your sign! Expect to initiate new projects, expand your activities and pursue new studies. Meanwhile, you will attract helpful people and resources to you. Basically, you’re entering a new world! (Some of you will even change your daily wardrobe.) Just as you are setting out on this journey to reinvent yourself, lucky Jupiter will be in your sign for the first time in 12 years, giving you divine protection. Your confidence and self-poise will increase this year. You’re movin’ on!
Relationships and Romance With Jupiter in your sign, not only will romance and friendships improve, but you will also be more active in groups and organizations as well. That’s because suddenly, everyone wants you on their team! It’s important to know that your relations with others will benefit you this year because it means it’s in your best interest to be friendly with everyone. (Which, let’s face it, is your style anyway.)
Home Suite Home
“I’m streamlining and lightening my load!” The Skinny You are an attractive sign. (Some of you look almost angelic.) You are idealistic, sensitive, compassionate, and you really know how to accessorize. You love music and many of you are great dancers. (You never have enough shoes and boots.) You care about your friends, who love you. Your ability to visualize, makes you a great choreographer or photographer. Buy your Kleenex wholesale because you weep so easily.
Career and Money You are starting to dismantle much of what you have created since 2008 in order to get rid of what is no longer relevant or useful in your life. In May, June and July, you will get a boost of good fortune and optimism! The changes you make this year will lead to a better financial year in 2022, when you will increase your assets and get richer! Yay!
Relationships and Romance This year you are giving serious thought to friendships and romantic partnerships because you want to be involved with people who have your back and who benefit you. This is why you will find yourself saying goodbye not only to possessions and places but also to certain people. It’s time to put yourself first. If not now – then when?
Home Suite Home You are letting go of what you no longer need, which means you might change your residence. Obviously, important family connections will endure because you will protect them; but you no longer will give energy to something that has outlived its usefulness. You’re getting ready for a fresh start!
The last two years have been the dark night of the soul for you. Many of you have downsized and given up much. This year is your turning point, which will be obvious in the increased happiness and hope in your personal and domestic world. You have survived! Family life will be happier and easier.

“I appreciate the benefit I get from others.” The Skinny You’re an initiator. You’re the energy and brains behind new projects. You’re competitive because you hate to lose. Because you’re the warrior of the zodiac, you rise to every challenge and lead with blind optimism. “To the gates!” You love animals, especially baby ones. You can do anything with your hands. (Training? That’s cheating!) You like fast cars, jaunty hats and adventure!
Career and Money Life will be much easier this year! With little effort, you will move in the direction you want, and bosses and VIPs will help you. In the last three years, Saturn created obstacles for you; but this year, Saturn will give you the stability and perseverance to attain your goals, while Jupiter will promote your popularity with others. Yes! (You might experience a sudden change with professional associations.) Whereas until now, you have thrived as an individual – this year, you will begin to integrate yourself with some kind of group expression. It’s time to learn to cooperate in a team.
Relationships and Romance This year, because you will be more popular and more active with groups, it’s important to know that friends and new contacts will benefit you. (Because this is a two-way street, you will help friends and romantic partners as well.) Note: The more you make an effort to interact and help others -- the quality of your own life will improve. It’s a win/win! Nevertheless, some unexpected and sudden changes to friendships and clubs will occur this year.
Home Suite Home This will be a better year for home and family simply because you’re happier. You intend to take more time for yourself (personally) to protect your own quality of life instead of giving everything to your job and the community. This gift of personal time will benefit your relations with family and loved ones.

You love good food, good wine, and because you are the most sensual sign in the zodiac, you love good sex. Your keen tactile sense creates an interest in massage and your fine sense of taste makes you a gourmet. (You adore your creature comforts.) You also enjoy gardening and delight in flowers. Many of you have a wonderful singing voice. All of you have financial savvy!
The reason you are interesting is that you are interested in everything and you love people. You especially love fascinating conversations and fun times that give you the chance to show off how quick-witted and clever you are. Your freedom is important to you because you’re a spontaneous person. You are a lover of life and always appreciate your adoring peanut gallery.

Glory hallelujah! Saturn and Jupiter at the top of your chart this year spells success. It’s finally time for you to put your name up in lights! You clearly see what is working and what is not. Many of you will get a promotion or public recognition this year. Some will change their career to medicine, healing, the law, higher education or travel. It’s your turn to go for the gold! Nevertheless, keep your eyes open for fast changes in February, June and December.
This year is all about getting performanceready for 2022 because in 2022, you will shine! That’s why it’s important to know that what you do this year will affect how good you look next year. Get training or further education. Become more technologically savvy. Because your creative potential is enormous right now, you can accomplish a lot that might be tough to do in other years. Several times this year, you will have sudden changes with travel and school plans. Stay flexible!

Relationships and Romance
Success is sexy! Because you are enjoying one of the most successful years in your life, naturally, this makes you more appealing to new and existing partners. This year, you feel confident, happy to be in your shoes and proud of your accomplishments, which makes you even more attractive to everyone! Enjoy this great press.
This is a wonderful year for relationships, especially romance. You want to broaden your understanding of the world, which is why people from different backgrounds will intrigue you. You will also find it easy to be tolerant of “different” people. Even your sense of humor will be sharper this year! This is a great year to enjoy travelling with partners and friends if you can do so. You want more out of life!

ruth be told, I had begun to write about Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany, almost three years earlier. On December 12, 2020, I returned from his Bhog and Antim Ardas (gurudwara service) and started to reminiscence about the years between 2017 and now. I now believe that what Dr. Kapany demonstrated in these three odd years was the epitome of his strong character. personal. This is why I felt it is important to include this insight in my original draft. The Sikh Foundation 50th anniversary celebrations were planned for 2017. A year before in June 2016, his beloved wife of 62 years, Satinder Kaur, passed away. I sensed that this left a morass of grief, which he seemed to carry in his heart ever since. I believe that it was through his strong willpower that he kept himself going so that the Sikh Foundation anniversary could happen as planned. And it did in a splendid celebration at the Asian Art Museum and the Stanford University campus. It was a hugely successful event, attended by dignitaries from around the

At this time, we also released my book Sikh Art from the Kapany Collection coedited by Dr. Paul Michael Taylor, which documented his iconic art collection. After all the guests had left, we felt we could now take a well-deserved break. Perhaps he too felt that the major goals he had set out for himself had been achieved. Shockingly, soon after the event he fell ill and was hospitalized. I remember clearly how I panicked in that moment, thinking

that this would be the end. He now appeared with a certain human frailty in that moment, and so I began to draft my remembrance. But I underestimated the man I had closely worked with for the past 15 years. After many ups and downs in his health, he strived on and repeatedly bounced back to his cheery self. How did he do it? Was it the force of his astute and agile mind? Was it his strict discipline and passion for his regimen? Or perhaps

just his plain God-bestowed genius-ness, that enabled him to stay in Chardi Kala (a state of positivity), welcoming me with his cheerful, booming voice every time I met him, usually every Friday at his home in Woodside. He adapted to a new lifestyle of working from home now instead of attending office daily from 10am-3pm at the Sikh Foundation in Palo Alto. Despite the daily challenges of managing his health, he continued to work for the Sikh Foundation giving interviews, meeting people and working on the numerous projects we have going. Using a wheelchair did not deter him from personally attending the opening of the Triton Museum of Art exhibit, which showcased works of nine contemporary Sikh artists including Arpana Caur and Devender Singh. Adhering to his doctor’s orders he gave up his regular two glasses of red wine before dinner and switched to a shot of tequila. He never complained about his food, which had no salt. Instead, he added his own flair of a few drops of Tabasco hot sauce to keep it flavorful. He also attentively managed his personal assets and was even now, on the lookout for good business opportunities, reminding me that here was a man who had started a new solar energy company at age 84. I had seen him work on new ideas and patents well into his 80s.
In my moments of doubt, he cleverly motivated me by turning the concept of entrepreneurship around and interpreting it as “Intrapreneurship” by which an employee can grow an organization by using similar principles. He continued to aggressively negotiate and initiate new projects. He signed the deal with the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for the establishment of a permanent Sikh art gallery gifting them 150 artworks from the Kapany Collection. Just last month we were discussing a loan agreement for artworks to the Indian Heritage Center in Singapore for their upcoming exhibit “Sikhs in Singapore – A Story Untold”. He regularly listened to kirtan and paath (sikh devotional music and readings from the scriptures) on his small electronic Gurbani player. He continued to be steadfast in his faith. For him “Work was worship” and not the other way around, as most people settle for in the sunset years. While he did establish enduring legacies at universities and museums, he was also mindful about the impact of smaller acts of charity, which he happily shared with those in need. He repeatedly joked that “eh sara kuch ethey hi reh jana hai” (all this wealth will be left behind). He personally helped me and my family find our footing in this new world, when we migrated here in 2005. Every minute of his 94 years of life were precious to him and he did not want to waste them. He even completed his memoirs during these three years and we were just getting ready to send it to the printers. Many times over, he amazed me with his sharp insights and advice. He was always about the future and hardly ever dwelled on past glories. The prospect of the Nobel Prize would have excited men but not him when he was nominated for it last year. To me, he was larger than life then, and so he is now. Amongst the most acclaimed scientists, researchers, academicians, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and art collectors in the world, his contributions span the fields of lasers, optics, medicine, academics, entrepreneurship, arts and philanthropy.

light can be bent. This discovery changed the world forever. Coining the term Fiber-optics, he laid the foundations for the Internet age, which was to follow. Soon after his marriage to Satinder Kaur, the couple migrated to the USA in 1955. He thrived as a research scientist first at Rochester University, NY, and then at the Illinois Institute of Technology at Chicago. His research in fiber optics, lasers, solar energy and its applications in defense, bio-medical instruments, communications and pollution control monitoring earned him more than a 100 important patents. In 1961, his next big move was to San Francisco where he founded Optics Technology Inc. and successfully took it public in 1967. The San Francisco Examiner described him as “…the most dashing corporate officer in the area” (San Francisco Examiner February 9, 1961). He also founded Kaptron Inc. in 1973 and Solarpath in 2010. He and his wife Satinder were both artists and also avid art collectors. They scoured the globe for all things Sikh, making their home in Woodside California a virtual museum. Dr. Kapany defined Sikh Art as – Art by, for and about Sikhs. Their expansive and magnificent Sikh Art collection is representative of Sikh artistic expression in all its forms – paintings, manuscripts, textiles, stamps, coins, arms and armor, and sculptures. They not only put together a collection unparalleled in its range and quality but also were happy to share it with the world. Artworks were loaned out to numerous museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Smithsonian in
Washington DC, and the Rubin Museum of Art in New York for exhibits. The seal ring of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the delicate Sikh sketches by Emily Eden, the vibrant phulkaris embroidered by deft hands, the Nanak Shahi coins symbols of Sikh sovereignty and so much more was shared readily with the world. I wonder how else would we, as a community, be able to experience the totality of our rich Sikh artistic heritage if it was not for this magnificent collection. This collection inspired others to build on this foundation. In 2003, he gifted 100 magnificent Sikh artworks to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, establishing for perpetuity the Satinder Kaur Kapany Gallery of Sikh Art - the first permanent Sikh art gallery in the West. Recently, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art was the beneficiary of another significant gift of 150 artworks, leading the way for Canada’s first permanent Sikh art gallery. Throughout his life he took immense pride in his Sikh identity and heritage even headlining a newspaper article in 1957 as “Scientist wears turban and tie” (Chicago Daily News Wednesday. July 31, 1957) Philanthropy is not something he set out to do in his later years. He set up the Sikh Foundation as early as in 1967, with the promise to create an understanding of the history, art and culture of Sikhs. Speaking at the 50th Anniversary Gala of the Sikh Foundation at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, on May 5, 2017, he addressed the audience and said, “We should ensure that our friends of other faiths, races and cultures understand who and what we are. We must present the beauty of our heritage without chauvinism. The wisdom, philosophy and arts of the Sikh faith belong to the world.” He fully lived the Sikh concept of “Dasvandh” which is sharing one tenth of your earnings with others. He is popular, celebrated, has been part of massive blockbusters, and also has his fair shares of critically-acclaimed films. Most importantly, he has blurred the boundaries of the movie industry - having worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Kannada movies. A bodybuilder with his heart on his sleeve - presenting Sonu Sood. Sood started his career in the Tamil film industry - with the movie Kallazhagar. The movie saw him act as a priest. He slowly moved to the Telugu movie industry with Hands Up!. His Bollywood entry was much later in the year 2002 with Shaheed-E-Azam in which he played Bhagat Singh. However, the same year saw two more movies that were based on the freedom fight. While he primarily played the antagonist in the South, he tried his hand at being the protagonist in Bollywood - we are talking about movies like Aashiq Banaya Aapne. It was not always a road of roses for Sonu, who also played several side roles in movies such as Yuva, Singh Is Kinng, Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi, Happy New Year, and Jodhaa Akbar. But all these movies that he was a part of were massive hits and with that, he also gained a lot of recognition and fame.

His portrayal of Chedi Singh as the antagonist in Dabangg gave him several awards and with that came more negative roles in Bollywood as well as the South. An out-of-the-box thinker, Sood never hesitated from experimenting with newer roles and this attitude grabbed him the role of Harsha in the Mandarin-movie, Xuanzang, and Kung Fu Yoga. Besides movies, Sood has a side that has garnered him more recognition than ever. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Sood helped more than thousands of migrant workers to reach their homes by arranging buses, special trains, and chartered flights for them. It

So, I knew it was not going to be easy but I started seeking permission from Government officials and offices to get these workers to travel back home in buses, trains, flights, etc. So that was a turning point. There was a place in Mumbai where I met these families who were really desperate to go back to their homes and be with their loved ones. It moved me tremendously,” Sood shares. Sood admits that philanthropy has always been a part of him but 2020 helped him scale it to a different level. “I used to help a lot of people during school and college days. scale. And in all honestly, this work has given me immense confidence and has proved that I can do a lot more to save lives. So, I have taken it upon myself to do my bit and reach out to as many people as I can,” shares the 47-year-old Mumbaikar. At a time when people started to believe that humanity was dying, 2020 prove everybody wrong. It was a year where humanity resurfaced and giving back to the community was the biggest motto for a lot of people. Sood agrees and suggests, “Humanity never died. All we had to do was reinvent ourselves and do our bit for others. We have been living our lives keeping our needs and dreams before everything else. But when you start doing things for others it brings a different kind of joy. In fact, it rejuvenated me. And since I connected with all these migrant workers and their families, I know for a fact that my connection with them
will continue for the rest of my life. I believe everybody needs to do their bit- small or big in order to help society now, more than ever.” Sonu also admits that this year has helped him rebrand and reintroduce himself to the audience “2020 has been very different for the world. And for me personally, it helped me reinvent myself, I get to reintroduce myself and it has changed me in a lot of ways. It has introduced me to a side that I knew existed but I didn’t realize I could do things to this scale. It guided me in the right direction, helped me grow, help me touch more lives, and bring more smiles to the faces of people,” he smiles. Today, no matter where Sood goes, people chant, “real-life hero”. It is a name that makes Sonu proud. However, he says, “When I recently visited the Sai Baba temple in Shiridi, people were so excited and showered me with love. All this love and affection motivates me and makes me believe that I am doing something right in life. It places a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. I have to do my best, people expect me to help them and I need to deliver. I don’t

get stressed about it but I know this has placed tremendous amounts of expectations on me.” Talking about movies, Sood has a list of movies lined up that are in the post-production stage. But the most exciting among them all is Prithviraj. This historical action drama is directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and sees Akshay Kumar as Chauhan while Manushi Chhillar makes her Hindi film debut by playing his love interest as Sanyogita. The film sees Sonu Sood playing the role of Chand Bardai, an Indian poet. Though Sood doesn’t reveal a lot about the film, he says, “Filming for the movie is over, and it is a super special film for me. The movie is brilliant and I’m looking forward to it just like everybody else.” With a few films lined up in the Southern language, we ask Sood his favourite industry to work in. He laughs and says, “I started my career in the South and whatever I learnt has come from the South. I have done so many movies in Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil and I cannot contain the happiness that I continue to work in these industries. I have worked in several Bollywood films as well. So to put it in a nutshell, all the industries are the same when it comes to the work culture or the amazing crew members you get to work with. However, personally, the South will always be close to my heart because that’s where I started.” But these are good times for the actor who is looking forward to a new inning in the film industry as the lead actor. “It was in 2020 that I started to receive a lot of scripts from amazing directors for the role of the lead. I hope that this is a new beginning for me as an actor and I get to do some great work. I hope for the best and will hope to do better work,” he signs off.

ith the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a hot topic has been the development of a vaccination to combat its symptoms, spread and impact. In the fall of 2020, talks of the vaccine began proliferating and by winter, the negotiations were in full force on a global scale. With so much information and mis-information floating around, it can be a daunting task to make a decision that is right for you with all the facts presented. Worry not, as you can now easily review the basics – and beyond – of the COVID-19 vaccination, guided by questions that are important to educate yourself on:
Is the vaccination safe?
Who makes the COVID-19 vaccination? As per the World Heath Organization (WHO), there are three vaccinations that are authorized. Two vaccines, the Pfizer vaccine and the Moderna vaccine, have been approved for use by Health Canada. Pfizer, an American multinational, prides itself as one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, with recognizable brands such as Advil in the general household. Moderna is an American pharmaceutical and biotechnology company known for drug development Canada does not produce the vaccine, but sources it.
The Government of BC proclaims that the COVID-19 vaccines that have been approved by Health Canada are safe, effective and will save lives. Having been used around the world for three months, trial data points to the vaccine being extremely safe. When it comes to pregnancy, research is limited, but vaccinations remain the best way to prevent COVID-19 in pregnant and breastfeeding women. For those who get vaccinated, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control, side effects should subside within a couple of days. Side effects include pain and swelling in the area the vaccination was given. Potential headaches, nausea, vomiting, chills, fever and joint soreness may occur.
Who should get the vaccine? The Pfizer vaccine is approved for those 16 years of age or older, while the Moderna vaccine is approved for those 18 years of age or older. All members of the public should get the vaccine, with priority being given to those at the front line, or those that are most at risk. Dr. Manchanda adds that there is not as much of a rush to those who have already fallen ill to COVID-19, as their body has a natural immunity for it. Although we are not fully sure of this timeline, it is estimated to be around six months.

Why should you get the vaccine? Vaccinations do not just protect you, but also other vulnerable populations that are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19. Dr. Raman Manchanda, a physician with speciality in Family Medicine, elaborates, “The COVID-19 vaccination is important to prevent COVID-related severe morbidity and death. If we knew for sure that people would only get light illnesses from COVID-19, a vaccination would not be developed. We know for sure that COVID-19 kills people. This is why we need to vaccinate.” He further explains that vaccinations have arguably been the single biggest introduction into medicine that have saved the largest amounts of lives.
“The COVID-19 vaccination is important to prevent COVIDrelated severe morbidity and death. If we knew for sure that people would only get light illnesses from COVID-19, a vaccination would not
Is the vaccination a one-time prevention mechanism? No. The vaccination will require a second booster shot, for which you will be instructed when you get into the immunization process. Regardless of whether or not you have access to the vaccine yet, it is important to know that the vaccine alone does not cure the world of COVID-19. This disease spreads from those who are not being careful and not following simple recommendations. In addition to following provincial health restrictions, remember to wear your masks, wash your hands, and refrain from touching your face as much. Dr. Manchanda suggests a simple strategy, “Pretend as though you have the disease and everyone else does, too. If everything else is too complicated, just follow one simple protocol. Stay away from others, do not gather, and socially distance.”

be developed. -Dr. Raman Manchanda, Physician, Family Medicine
How does the vaccination work? It is helpful to understand how vaccines work in order to remove the fear of the unknown. Immunize BC breaks down the process in an easy-tounderstand manner, explaining that vaccines are made using weaker or dead versions of the germs that cause the actual disease at hand, which, in this case, is COVID-19. This is a safe process. Your body responds by creating anti-bodies to fight the germ, much like it would for the real disease. However, it now has a memory of how to fight this germ if it were to ever

TM
enter the body again. This means, that, even if you were exposed to COVID-19, your immune system remembers how to fight it and you will not get sick. Note that the COVID-19 vaccination is not a live virus vaccine; it cannot cause COVID-19.
What does the vaccination contain? UBC medical student, Sukhmeet Singh Sachal, through his organization the Sikh Health Foundation shares, “The COVID-19 vaccine contains safe ingredients that have been rigorously tested and do not go against beliefs or restrictions posed by various communities including the vegan population, as well as Sikh, Muslim, and Jewish communities.” Ingredients include: • mRNA: Harmless genetic material to help teach the body’s cells how to fight the infection • Non-medical Ingredients: Required for the vaccine to function, for various purposes • Lipids and Cholesterol: Helps the mRNA enter the body’s cells • Sucrose (Sugar), Potassium Salts, Sodium Salts: Protects the mRNA from breaking down

Having been used around the world for three months, trial data points to the vaccine being extremely safe. When it comes to pregnancy, research is limited, but vaccinations remain the best way to prevent COVID-19 in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
How will BC roll out the vaccine? The first round of vaccinations have begun as of mid-December, 2020 and vaccinations will be provided free of cost. Being shipped to multiple locations in the province, there are and will be vaccination sites accessible to all those recommended to get vaccinated. First, priority groups will be immunized, arranged by public health and requiring no action on your part. From December to February,
long-term care home staff, residents and visitors will be immunized, alongside health care workers and isolated Indigenous communities. From February to March, seniors and those in group homes, provincial correctional facilities, and shelters are among key target populations. For the general public, a registration and record system is being developed, and all those recommended to get the vaccine should receive the vaccine by the end of the year.
How can you find out more? Do not rely on viral messages on social media platforms for your information about the vaccination. To get more information, ask your family physician. If you would like to resort to online sources, only check governmental websites for the most up-to-date information. If you are reading the news, make sure that the reporting news outlet is a trusted, reputable one. Service BC agents are also available to help via text or call, with translation services if needed.

amed American writerorator-lawyer Robert G. Ingersoll rightly said — “We rise by lifting others.” A similar philosophy is resonated by the Jaipur-based B Corp — Lioness Tile. Founded by three IT professionals — Erik Duffield, Daminder Kaur, and Manpreet Singh, Lioness Tile is an initiative that not only boasts of handcrafting environmentally conscious and finest cement tiles but also empowering local women artisan. Set in a small village in Jaipur called Bagru, Lioness
DARPAN

Tile was established in 2017 with an intent to revive the dwindling handicraft economy of Bagru and empowering the local artisans, who are struggling to find sustainable avenues of employment in times of rapid industrialization and textile automation. “When we came up with this idea and started
doing our research, we realized that this art form was about to die in India. While it is big in other countries like Morocco, its popularity in India was fading and only a few companies were able to sustain it. Also, our whole purpose of wanting to do something was to contribute to the society as well,” reveals Daminder Kaur, Managing Director and Founder of Lioness Tile. She adds, “Our artisans have never been to school, they were doing the cleaning and other small-time jobs, so making them learn this art form and see them grow, means a lot to us. We strongly believe in a culture where we grow, our artisans grow and our families grow.” Driven by creativity and
purpose, Lioness Tile clearly operates with a social mission at the core of their business model and has a strong value system which is based on quality, sustainability, design and responsibility. Inspired from various cultures, styles and countries — right from the intricate jali-work of Rajasthan, to the joyful riot of colours of Marrakech — each tile at Lioness Tile not only has a thought behind it but is also environmentally- friendly. Made from all-natural materials using a hand-pressed and hydraulic pressure technique, Lioness Tile creates tiles that stand the test of time without leaving any pollution in its wake, a contrast to the much-popular but environmentally damaging kiln-fired technique. What’s more, the company even donates all the tiles made during their training sessions to schools, NGOs and temples.
“Our artisans have never been to school, they were doing the cleaning and other small-time jobs, so making them learn this art form and see them grow, means a lot to us. We strongly believe in a culture where we grow, our artisans grow and our families grow.”
- Daminder Kaur, Founder & Managing Director of Lioness Tile Apart from these fabulous reasons, what else makes this B Corp all the more appealing is its incessant effort to empower women. The company lives by the motto — Educate a woman, and you educate an entire family. Lioness Tile is passionate about ensuring the well-being of its women artisan-partners and enabling them and their families to live flourishing lives with opportunities. With regular training workshops to equip them with an increasing set of skills, providing a free, safe and creative space for them to work in, and giving them a sustained livelihood, Lioness Tile strives to ensure that all their talented employees are financially secure, confident and independent. Proudly narrating the achievement of their artisans, Daminder Kaur says, “One of

tiles in a short span of time, but also take care of the end-to-end production process, understand the client’s requirements and create beautiful mind-blowing bespoke tiles. At the moment Lioness Tiles operates with a small team of 10 artisans but moving forward they plan to scale in a big way. “Lioness is about creating. The founding of it was about creating timeless designs, the highest quality tiles, and creating work opportunity for the rural women of India. The alignment of these three is what makes it special. Now, that Lioness has grown up, it is about creating wonderful spaces in Indian culture: the family kitchen, the cafe, the hotel, and doing so with India’s rising architects and designers. It’s also about creating a connection between the materials we use and the artisans that make them,” says co-founder Erik Duffield. Further talking about their expansion plan, Daminder Kaur says, “While growth is important for us, we don’t want to lose our uniqueness, we don’t want to lose our value and the culture we are providing to our artisans and their families. Because going up is easy for everybody once you are done with the hard phase but it is important to give back to society. The reason why we started Lioness should always stay with us…be it five years down the line, ten years or twenty or more… that is very important.” She adds, “Lioness is a dream come true for me, a place full of creativity along with sustainability and responsibility. Too cold to step outside or broke to take your V-date for a fancy dinner? Well, don’t let the winter chill or budget issues ruin your romantic date plan. Push aside your furniture to a corner of the room, spread a picnic blanket, decorate the space with some soft lights, throw in some cosy pillows, cook a meal or order your beloved’s fav food and voila, you are all set to have a nice romantic picnic date.
Tour Your Fav Places Instead of planning to go to just one of your favourite places, spend the whole day with each other and hop by at all your favourite spots and relive some beautiful memories. Let your partner pick up some of your fav places and you pick some of theirs, and then surprise each other with the locations. It is a splendid way to spend your V-day, relive your fav memories and even make new memories.

What
am I looking for? It is important to distinguish if you are looking for a temporary escape, the resolution to a long-time quarrel, a sense of security, fulfillment, or an experimental phase to try out something new – maybe a relationship or a spontaneous trip to your favorite city. do I want love from? Love could be something you are seeking from others; this could be relationships you have at home or work, or a relationship you do not have yet, but would like to. Remember to also evaluate if the real person you want love from is yourself. Self-acceptance and self-respect are often prerequisites for relationships outside of yourself. do I want this form of love? Know the driving motivation behind your actions. If this is something you are being pressured into, do not paint a false picture of you wanting it as well. Recognize if your need for love is being produced from constant comparisons to others. If you are the sole driving factor, have an honest conversation with yourself about why you are in this phase. is the right time? This is individual to you. If it feels like the right time, go for it. Do not follow a standard or arbitrary timeline set by society. Even if your intention is to open up more to your parents, respect your emotions and your body enough to proceed when it is most true to yourself, not by the convenience of others. do my boundaries start and end? Finding and developing love in your world can be exhausting and comes with no rule book. Listen to yourself in setting healthy checkpoints to see how you’re doing and when it’s time to take a break. With any sort of emotional investment, be firm on your walk-away point. As you embark on this adventure, be kind to yourself and others. Love is always around us and pops up in places you least expect at times you’d never imagined. Often described as the medicine to every wound, love truly has life-changing properties. The world, as we know it, constantly changes and we inevitably have to accept these uncertainties. One thing that holds us together, internally and externally, is love – an unchanging, indestructible force!

Physical When most people hear the term “self-care,” physical self-care is often what comes to mind. Physical self-care refers to any activity you consciously engage in to improve your physical wellbeing. It requires you to actively listen to what your body wants in any given moment and deliver on that. For example, you may tend to your aches and pains with a bubble bath. Or perhaps you’ve spent too much time working at your desk, and you decide to counteract it by going for a run. Being in tune with what your body needs at all times is imperative when it comes to physical self-care.

f there’s one valuable lesson that has come from 2020, it’s that the only constant in your life is you. As a result of lockdowns and social distancing directives, many of us have become isolated from our favourite people, places, and pastimes, leaving us to question whether we can truly be happy without them. The truth is, your quality of life can significantly improve when you don’t depend on someone or something to make you feel happy. If there are voids in your life, don’t look outwards to fill them - find ways to fill them yourself. To be the happiest, healthiest, and best version of yourself, you need to take control of your wellbeing. This is where self-care comes in.

The goal is not to avoid having negative emotions altogether, but instead to have self-awareness so that you can better understand what’s causing them. Inward observation will give you the clarity you need to resolve the things in your life. While physically caring for yourself mostly involves getting enough water, sleep, nutritious food, and exercise each day, it can also include things that make your body feel good. Activities such as using body scrubs, going for pedicures, getting your hair styled, or simply wearing clothing that makes you feel good about yourself and your body, are all a part of physical self-care. Looking after your physical wellbeing also means not giving your body things that are actively harming it. Treating your body with love by minimizing toxic activities is essential. It would help if you made time in your schedule to regularly engage in activities that both nourish your body and bring you a sense of calm and balance. Social Human beings are social by nature. Thus, the connections you have with others can significantly impact your health and overall wellbeing. Surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good and inspire you to be the best version of yourself is an important aspect of social self-care. Social self-care requires you to learn the amount of socializing that is right for you. People often get categorized as extroverts or introverts, but most people fall somewhere in between. Extroverts gain energy from being around other people. At the same time, introverts recharge by spending time alone and often feel drained when spending too much time with others. There is no one size fits all solution when it comes to how much time you ought to spend with loved ones. Rather, the goal should be to strike just the right balance for you. Your vision for the year should come from what you totally aspire. Ask yourself: Without the pressure of any other person and without considering expectations others may have of you, what do you truly want to achieve? The scale of this goal can be as minimal or as large as you define it to be. You may desire to hit a certain revenue stream by December, have a certain body weight to muscle ratio, or simply become a more content person by having a grasp on your anxiety. Seeds
We often undervalue the potential of small and tiny looking things in our life. But it’s about time we stop doing that right away. A handful of seeds— like flaxseeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and melon seeds — can pack a punch of nutrition like no other. Flaxseeds are a rich source of dietary fibre and omega 3 fatty acids. If you are on a weight loss diet you don’t need to do much of jumbling around with food items, all you need to do is eat these seeds right before your meal and it will lower your hunger and make you eat less naturally. Same goes with chia seeds, which are also rich in iron, calcium and magnesium. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds, like others, boasts of a strong vitamin profile and have all the necessary minerals that our body needs. So, whether you are considering dieting or not these little snack-like superfoods are a must-have in your daily list of munchers.
8
Turmeric
If one thing that has been consumed the most and highly-recommended as an immunity booster during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has to be turmeric. Commonly used in Indian cuisine, this superfood has gained immense popularity across the globe due to its innumerable health benefits during the pandemic. Turmeric contains bioactive compounds that are known to have medicinal properties. The most common compound is curcumin, which is an active ingredient in turmeric that helps eradicate dangerous chemical formation in our system. Ayurveda recommends turmeric for a variety of health conditions and advises to have a small amount of turmeric, either in raw form or spice added to your food every day.
9
Ash Gourd
This cool veggie has its own style and taste. It’s the ultimate healing source for the body. In Ayurveda, it is revered for its medicinal value and its ability to eliminate many diseases. It is used to treat asthma, internal haemorrhage, urine problems and cough. Though ash gourd comprises of 96% water, it is rich in fibre and provides small amounts of various nutrients. It is a good source of Vitamin c, flavonoids and carotenes and Ash gourd also contains small amounts of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese, as well as various other B vitamins.
If you are on a weight loss diet you don’t need to do much of jumbling around with food items, all you need to do is eat flax seeds right before your meal and it will lower your hunger and make you eat less naturally.
10
Broccoli Many might frown upon the mention of this cruciferous vegetable, but the fact is, it is loaded with lots of health benefits. Packed with vitamin A, C, E and K, it can protect cell damage. It’s a great source of fibre and protein and contains iron, calcium, and potassium, which enhances immune system functions. Broccoli is also renowned to build up strong bones and help in blood clotting. Daily inclusion of broccoli in your diet has been said to prevent various types of cancer as well.
Lastly, while it is good to add all these superfoods to our everyday dietary pattern, it is important to remember that the key to a healthy life is to consume a variety of nutritious food in proper proportions. Eating a well-balanced diet can do wonders for our health.

he past year brought so many challenges for so many people thanks to the fallout from Covid. In an effort to maintain health for ourselves and others, some practices have led to other issues, namely skin problems from handwashing, sanitizing and mask wearing. moisture, and condensation on the skin under masks is irritating and makes it a breeding ground for the unhelpful kind of bacteria. “It’s a total robbery of moisture,” says Patricia Clare, National Training Manager for Neostrata. Canada. “Every time that we wash or sanitize, our faces or our hands, our body has to naturally rebuild the PH of the skin back into position. We’re born with this skin barrier that keeps aggressors out and moisture in. So, when we continually disrupt that, that’s when our skin can feel really parched, really inflamed, and really uncomfortable.” For people with existing skin conditions, the problem is just exacerbated, says Dr. Amanda Lau, Medical Director and founder of Skinfolio Medical Spa in West Vancouver.
DR. AMANDA LAU, MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF SKINFOLIO MEDICAL SPA
“For people with eczema, alcohol sanitizer might not be the right option. Just soap and water are probably the best way to go,” Dr. Lau advises.
“For people with eczema, alcohol sanitizer might not be the right option. Just soap and water are probably the best way to go,” Lau advises. Though frequent handwashing is necessary, there are a few things we can do to mitigate moisture loss, extreme dryness and cracked skin. “Try to use a gentle soap and avoid hot water. The time you spend washing your hands (20 seconds is recommended) is more important than the temperature of the water,” suggests Kathryn Sawers of Yaletown’s Collective Skin Care. “Applying hand cream throughout the day can help, but if your skin is severely parched consider wearing a rich, thick hand cream with thin cotton gloves to push the moisture deeper into your skin overnight.” Dr. Lau seconds the overnight moisture-rich, cotton glove treatment to help replenish skin. Consider the type of products you’re using too. Helena Lane, founder of Helena Lane Organic Skincare, advises using a gentler unscented soap as fragrance can be an irritant. “Carry a travel size hand cream – unscented – made with simple, natural ingredients.

Look out for shea or cocoa butter, plant oils, lanolin and beeswax; use it each time after you wash your hands,” Lane counsels. Also consider treating your skin from the inside out, not just topically. “Having a diet that is rich in omega fatty acids can also help prevent rashes and irritation from occurring, not only for your hands, but your entire body,” says Sawers. Perhaps the most frustrating skin issue to arise from long-term mask wearing is the recently coined maskne which is exactly what

it sounds like: acne erupting on areas of the face covered by a mask. “You’re going to have your skin type— oily, dry or combination— and if on top of that we allow bacteria to breed on the skin with moisture under [the mask] and we’re not allowing the skin to breath properly. That bacteria starts to run [and] that’s when we get maskne,” explains Clare. Lau says she has seen a lot of patients dealing with maskne at her clinic. “I have patients who have pre-existing acne that was under control, but you throw in the mask and now they’re coming in with acne over the areas covered by the mask,” she says. Dealing with the skin problems occurring due to prolonged mask wearing is two-fold. The first approach is to treat the skin issue but the second is to care for the skin in a way to avoid issues. Lau gives patients topical acne treatment and topical antibiotics to deal with the lesions. But, she says, that wearing the right mask is important for skin to heal and to avoid irritation. “The way I tell them to prevent it is to change their mask often, so it doesn’t build

When the mask gets a bit wet, it gets congested over time. Use a more breathable fabric mask. I like 100 per cent cotton or 100 per silk for when you’re not in close contact with a person just to give the skin a break,” Lau says. Giving your skin a break is crucial, insists Clare. “If you’re on your break [at work] and can get out to your car [or outside] take your mask off, even if only for five minutes.” Any time that your skin can breathe freely is integral to its health. “If you are wearing a mask for long periods of the day, you should be looking after your skin more carefully and be strict about washing masks or replacing them often,” advises Lane. “If we don’t make these efforts, then mask wearing can make all skin issues – acne, eczema and sensitivities – far worse.” An effective skin care regimen is vital in keeping your skin healthy. Clare suggests lightening all the textures of your skincare products. Switch creams out for lotions.
She says that using a four per cent PHA (polyhydroxy acid) moisturizer will sweep off the dead skin cells so moisture can be absorbed. This latest generation of PHA is formulated for sensitive skin. She adds that using a glycolic acid treatment over the break-out areas can help keep pores unclogged. To replenish moisture, Clare suggests in the evening applying a hyaluronic acid bio-cellulose sheet mask that will deeply hydrate the skin. After she’s done with it, she flips it over to use as a hand treatment. “Be scrupulous about cleansing every day with a gentle oil-based cleanser,” says Lane. She echoes Clare, that we should shift to applying “lighter products, such as oils and mists and look for gentle antibacterial ingredients such as lavender and chamomile.” She keeps one of her brand’s lavender-based facial mists in her handbag to spritz her face and mask when needed. “I also do my evening skin care routine as soon as I get home, at the end of the day, rather than before bed,” she says. For those with sensitivity issues, Sawers says it’s imperative to rebuild and support the skin’s barrier function. “Integrate soothing, anti-inflammatory and hydrating serums and/or creams,” she advises. “Look for ingredients such as oatmeal/oat extract, aloe vera, squalene, hyaluronic acid to name a few.” In keeping with lightening up on skincare textures, both Lau and Clare suggest not wearing makeup where the mask covers the face. “I try to get people not to use makeup over the areas covered by the mask. Often the makeup does close up the pores. That’s our goal at the clinic: that most women will feel they don’t need makeup when they have such fantastic skin,” says Lau. Lau, who has seen an increase in overall skin issues due the stress of coping with these challenging times, says the we must have good self-management when looking after our skin’s health, which translates to caring for our overall health. That said, keep up the handwashing. Photo credits: iStockphoto, courtesy of Neostrata and Helena Lane Organic Skincare, Yaleeown Collective Skin Care, Skinfolio Medical Spa

Remove energetic drains
STAY EMPOWERED WITH YOUR FITNESS IN
One of the lessons I learned from my 20’s is that – I am not for everyone, and I cannot be there for everyone. People-pleasing is energetically draining and guess what – the energy that your body has to function, is limited. If we are not careful with where we utilize our energy we eventually go into an energetic deficit. The longer our body is in an energetic deficit, the more likely we are to be functioning in a burnout state. When you are in burnout, it is impossible to make true progress in your health and fitness. Being responsible with your time and energy is truly a skill of a successful, empowered woman!

as sleep, energy, digestion, hormones, lifestyle and emotional health vs. just the archaic model of calories consumed and intensity of exercise. Through my own challenges and witnessing my clients, I have learned that tuning in to your own body and taking ownership to educate yourself is the most powerful program to achieving your best health. Part of my work now is to educate women on how to build supreme trust with their body in order to live in a divine flow that the feminine body thrives in. Here are my top five tips for the 2021 woman who craves for her mind, body and soul to be in full alignment, which truly is the cornerstone of achieving optimal health and fitness.

Feel your way to your best diet For many years I ate a bodybuilder diet. When I strengthened my body awareness I learned that this style of eating was a large cause of my digestive issues. I was eating hard-to-digest foods, at times I wasn’t even hungry but I thought I needed to eat every few hours to maintain the muscle I worked so hard for. This would lead to bloating and energy crashes. In order to build body trust, I advise to take note of how you feel before and after eating. Notice things like your hunger level, energy, stress, bloating, and nature; bowel movements can provide valuable information to notice what effect the food has on your body.

Track your menstrual cycle In efforts to resolve my own challenges, as well as have a better understanding of how to support my clients, I spent all my spare time reading up on women’s fitness, natural nutrition, and hormones. Why is it so difficult for women to lose 5-10lbs yet men can lose it quickly? Also, why are so many women experiencing difficulty conceiving and carrying out full-term pregnancies? As I got farther away from mainstream fitness advice, and more into women specific science and ancient practices, I learned about the wisdom of our menstrual cycle. For example, high energy times vary over the course of the month, unlike men – whose biology functions more steadily throughout the month. I invite you to track your cycle and your energy peaks and dips. When fatigue is felt before or during menstruation, nourishing your mind and body with gentleness, perhaps a shorter, less intense workout, and highly nutritious foods can support your body during this drop in hormones. If this is a new practice for you, it will take time to find your flow, just remember that there is a cyclical flow, and when we can tap into it, we are one step close to keeping our weight, cravings, energy, skin, self-confidence and so much more in alignment.
Maintain a regular movement practice
Incorporate breathing techniques
I use to hear about meditation all the time, but I could never relate to “those” people. However, I realize the importance of oxygen; it is the body’s fuel. Taking in expansive breaths brings in fresh oxygen, and the body gets a burst of LIFE. When we shallow breathe, our cells and organs start to slow down as they don’t have LIFE to thrive. So here is the practice I give to clients: Nostril Breathing. Using your finger, close one of your nostrils. Take a big breath in through the open nostril. Hold at the top. Now let go of that nostril and close the other nostril. Breathe out steadily. Keep your mouth closed. Repeat this three to five times in a cyclical manner. Adjust the depth of the breaths to what feels best for you. I am also a big fan of good quality essential oils and candles as they make me breathe all day!

Above are some of the topics we don’t discuss in mainstream health and fitness, simply because personal trainers are not taught about biology and hormones. So we continue to train women like we train men, which can put women out of alignment with their biology leading to fitness plateaus and a lack of empowerment. It’s time to spread the word and truly start loving and living to our fullest feminine expression. Q: How did you meet?
Shalika: We met in Mexico (Cancun). I was there with a couple of my girlfriends when we walked past a group of guys from a bachelor party. We then walked down to the beach to play beach volleyball when we then saw the group of guys at the beach throwing a football around. Herman was wearing a Stephen Curry basketball jersey (who is my favourite player). I then shouted out “Steph Curry doesn’t play football!” He was looking around because he didn’t know who it was. We then invited them to come play beach volleyball with us. After that when we talked he guessed everything right about me

Q: Could you tell us about your reception? We did not have an actual reception because of this global pandemic. Although, we have never had so much fun before just partying with our 30-50 closest individuals. that, I changed into a Rimple & Harpreet suit from Vivah Collecions which was full of pastel colours with beautiful jhumke from Ganpati. For my choorah, again I wore a simple custom plain dusty rose short pant suit with a red velvet chunni. Finally, for the wedding day I wanted something with traditional red but with a twist. I got a custom chanderi silk lehenga made from LUX in Payal. It was inspired by Rimple & Harpreet. Due to Covid and everything being closed in Delhi and Mumbai, we received our wedding outfits a few days before the wedding which was the most stressful. However, LUX made sure we had our outfits in time and fixed whatever we needed right when the outfits got here. The wedding day jewellery was from Her Fashion Vault and I wore a kundan set with emerald and ruby accents which went perfectly with my lehenga! Herman: Maiyaan outfit was a custom-made pastel green floral kurta pajama. Mehendi outfit was custom-made royal blue floral kurtha pajama to match my wife’s beautiful suit. Also, visiting the dealership to get firmware updates will become a thing of the past, as SYNC is able to receive them securely over-the-air, similar to a smartphone or PC. The exterior still exudes the same subtle elegance the company has worked very hard to become known for. Even at a distance, the polished grille looks stunning, the mesh comprised of small repeating star logos. Walk towards the crossover, and the signature Lincoln Embrace comes alive to greet the driver. The “Welcome Mat puddle lighting illuminates the ground, and the door handle pockets softly glow to lead the way inside. Under the hood, the vehicle remains powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine producing 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Or, step up
to the optional 2.7-litre twinturbocharged V6 (+ $4,000) to experience a significant performance bump up to 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft. Both mills are mated to a smoothshifting eight-speed automatic transmission, and offer auto start-stop capability to improve fuel economy. All models are equipped with standard Co-Pilot360 safety tech that includes a backup camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot

Before getting into the nitty gritty, a brief history lesson. The reason the sports sedan exists is attributable to two major factors. First, there has been an obvious and ongoing effort company-wide to attempt to shed the stigma of being an old person’s car and appeal to a younger audience. Cue cool products such the Escala concept from which the CT4-V draws

Second, its creation is actually the culmination of more than 15 years of experimentation, following the launch of the V-Series performance sub-brand in the early 2000s that was responsible for the creation of the wild 400-horsepower CTS-V and other premium trackinspired, street-legal products.

The vehicle is beautifully proportioned boasting a long and wide stance, accentuated via optional equipment like the gloss black 19-inch wheels and bright Red Brembo brakes found on our GM-provided loaner. The darkened exterior details like the mesh grille, air intakes and body aero as well as quad-exit tailpipes indicate this is no regular CT4. As a true driver’s machine, the cabin is set up purposefully so that all the controls are ergonomically placed allowing the focus to be on the task at hand. The seats, available with perforated Jet Black leather upholstery (+$1,845), look great and more importantly offer lots of support, and feature power lumbar massage up front. The interior is surprisingly spacious for a compact car, especially in the back bench area where there is 848 millimetres of rear legroom. While the single-turbo 2.7-litre four banger under the hood isn’t quite as powerful as bigger brother CT5-V’s twin-turbocharged V6, the 310
horses — sent to either two or four wheels depending on the trim — are plenty while accelerating out of an onramp onto the highway or carving around the hidden backroad gems scattered across the Lower Mainland. Thanks to a neat suspension system taking advantage of variable magnetic fields to control ride quality rather than a traditional mechanical valve shock setup, handling is sharp and stiff when you want it to be, or soft and supple for aroundtown motoring. Everything is customizable via the 10-inch touchscreen under the V-Mode personalization menu including the steering feel to the volume of noise coming out of the exhaust. New for 2021 are two paint colours (Infrared Tintcoat and Rift Metallic), an upgradable 12-inch display (included in the Technology Package) and the latest generation of Super Cruise autonomous driving tech.

what it’s all about, and check out some of the small updates made to the cabin for the 2021 model year. Only two paint options are available for the Kuro: Black Mica or the Polymetal Grey Metallic that we tested. The creamy grey complements the company’s KODO: Soul of Motion design language perfectly, with different sections of the curvy movement-inspired body panels highlighted depending on where you’re standing and the source of light. Dark accenting is found all over the exterior such as the stunning gloss black finish on the 3-D mesh front grille, surround and door mirrors. as well like the dashboard, door cards and handle bezels. The situation does brighten up some inside: the seats are upholstered in Garnet Red, and the steering wheel and centre console panel feature a pop of contrast red stitching. Kuro is based on the middle-of-the-pack GT grade that is quite well equipped. Comfort and conveniencewise there’s electric adjustable and heated and ventilated front seating (10-way driver’s, four-way passenger), heated captain’s second row seating with centre pass-through for easy access to the back

bench, moonroof and a hands-free power liftgate. The head-up display is excellent, seamlessly projecting a variety of data onto the windshield. Entertainment takes the form of a nine-inch touchscreen display, built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, native SiriusXM satellite radio, Traffic Plus and Travel Link support and a thumping 12-speaker Bose stereo, Also, new for this year is a wireless phone charging pad found in the cubby ahead of the shifter. The Mazda Connect infotainment is easy enough to use, and I don’t mind the Commander rotary knob, but tuning radio stations is a clunky process. Under the hood nothing has been touched, and that’s just fine. Though a boosted 2.5-litre four cylinder may seem an odd choice for the rather large three-row crossover, Mazda’s proprietary Dynamic Pressure Turbo technology does a good job of producing V6-levels of performance. The nifty setup yields 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, bumped up to 250 and 320, respectively, when 93 octane is added. The CX-9 feels zippy enough even with a full complement of occupants, and the low-torque even enables the vehicle to perform some light towing up to a maximum of 3,500 pounds. The i-ACTIV all-wheel drive helps keep all four wheels glued to the pavement even in rainy Vancouver weather, and the Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission is smooth and efficient, allowing a fuel economy rating of 11.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 on the highway. Aside from the CX-9, the Kuro Edition is also offered on the CX-5 and Mazda6, available now.

T
he Toyota Corolla entered uncharted territory in 2018 by taking a page from the Prius’ playbook and going partially electrified for the
first time. Now, the sedan gets a little more refined with enhancements to the infotainment and safety tech. “Corolla drivers know where they’re going in life, and love the combination of driving fun and easy ownership that the world’s all-time most popular car delivers,” says Toyota Canada vice president Cyril Dimitris in a press release. “For 2021, we’ve enhanced every model with new features – making it a perfect time to enjoy the winning combination of the legendary Corolla and Toyota’s hybrid powertrain technology.”
The refreshed fourdoor still retains its sleek looks courtesy of the 12thgeneration platform offering standard sharp J-shaped bi-LED headlamps, a black mesh front grill and 15inch aluminum wheels. It’s not quite as sporty as the hatchback, featuring bigger alloys and rear spoiler, which is unfortunately sold in internal combustion form only. To be completely honest, I was surprised at how well equipped the interior of the Premium Package (+$2,000) grade we piloted was, packing vegan SofTex Leather seats,

allowing occupants to control their smartphone right from the Display Audio touchscreen. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is included, bundling collision avoidance and mitigation functionality such as lane departure warning and assist, automatic high beams, dynamic cruise control, and an upgraded blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert added. This Corolla’s powertrain is made up of a 1.8-litre four-cylinder internal combustion engine (ICE) complemented by two motor/ generators, managed through an electronicallycontrolled continuously variable transmission. In total, the output is 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. No, fast is not a correct adjective to use here, however it’s fine for daily driving — the onboard nickel-metal hydride battery pack provides a small power boost to aid in acceleration — and a multi-link rear suspension setup affords above-average handling. A very limited pure EV mode can be toggled on via a switch on the centre console, battery charge level permitting, perhaps useful for cruising around the neighbourhood or circling for a spot in an underground parkade. The real issue isn’t the performance, but rather how noisy the ICE is under load like when merging into traffic or climbing up a hill. While the car is premium feeling in a lot of areas, the lack of a quieter ride tarnishes the experience. Fuel efficiency, as one would surmise, is quite good. Aside from the Hybrid Synergy Drive system the brand has been perfecting for quite some time, things like low-rolling resistance tires also contribute to the estimated 5.0 L/100 km combined city and highway fuel economy rating (I averaged a slightly higher number during real-world testing). The 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is built in Japan and starts at MSRP $24,990.

Q&A Your output has either been a critical success or a popular hit. To what degree do you plan your career? I’ll be honest and say I’m a very intuitive person. You always want to do bigger and better work. Having said that, there isn’t a particular formula in my head. If I fall for a script or a character, that’s when I want to do it. Every time I’ve chosen a project, it’s because I’ve felt it could teach me something, or open an area in my body, in my heart or my mind that hasn’t been explored yet. Do you still get nervous working with actors of the caliber of Priyanka Chopra? It’s nerve-wracking, but only in the beginning. After you break the ice, once we get to know each other, it becomes normal. I’ve had the best time shooting with these people. Consider Priyanka, she’s not only an actor, she’s a producer, a director, a songwriter. There’s so much you can learn just by being around her. Priyanka and Farhan (Akhtar) can come up with jokes at the drop of a hat. From this conversation I gather The Sky Is Pink was a seminal moment for you. What was the biggest lesson you got from it? People’s perspective on death need to change. I understand that loss is painful, but it’s inevitable. Instead of mourning someone’s life, we must learn to celebrate it. The Sky Is Pink completely changed my perspective on death. Is there any kind of movie or TV show you wouldn’t do? I never say never to anything, but there’s a genre I’m not particularly fond of: Horror. But I like to keep my options open.

Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai Directed by: Prabhudeva Staring: Salman Khan, Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff
Here are 7 Big Theatrical Releases To Look Forward To In 2021 BY SHWETA KULKARNI
2021
is finally here! And even though the threat of the pandemic still looms over our heads, it indeed feels like a breath of fresh air, especially in the cinema landscape. Last year turned out to be frustrating for the film industry, as well as the movie buffs, courtesy the COVID-19 pandemic, but the new year has ushered in a new wave
of hope. With films having resumed their shooting, and a major backlog of big-ticket movies from 2020 scheduled to release this year, 2021 certainly seems like a movie lovers dream. From action to sports dramas to biopics to historical dramas, here are seven unmissable movies that you would want to add to your watch list in 2021.
Another cop film to hit the theatres this year is Salman Khan’s much-awaited Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai. With a special request from cinema hall-owners’ association to release the film on EID in theatres, to help them revive the losses of the last year, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai is definitely touted as one of the biggest grosser of the year. Few details have been shared at present about the film, however, it is learnt that this time around Salman Khan, who has often played a cop will be seen playing a very dark and serious cop this time around. Discussing the same, the director of the film, Prabhudeva, said, “It had to be a different cop from the one that Salman Sir plays in Dabangg. Otherwise, Radhe would look like just an extension of Dabangg. We’ve made sure this cop is different, more serious.” Allegedly, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai is a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan’s police character in Zanjeer (1973). Prabhudeva commented about it, “Not in any direct way. But yes, both Inspector Vijay and our inspector, they take their duty very seriously, and they don’t spare criminals.” This action dhamaka certainly can’t be missed.
83 Directed by: Kabir Khan Staring: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem The sports drama featuring versatile actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, undoubtedly, is one of the most anticipated films of 2021. Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 is based on the life of cricket legend Kapil Dev and India’s magnificent and memorable World Cup victory in the year 1983. The film, like many others, was scheduled to release last year, but due to the pandemic got pushed. But the makers have no qualms. Speaking about it, director Kabir Khan said, “It’s a once in a lifetime story, and it’s been designed for the big screen. We were sure that for 83, every cinema hall will become a stadium on its release. So, I don’t want to rob myself and the audience of that experience.” We are sure no movie buff would want to lose out on that experience either.

BRAHMĀSTRA
E: info@darpanmagazine.com | T: 604.537.7277
Directed by: Ayan Mukerji Staring: Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt Ayan Mukerji’s dream project — the three-part action fantasy film — Brahmãstra has been much delayed, but trust us when it finally hits the screen the wait would have been worth it. Touted as one of the biggest films ever made in India, Brahmãstra brings together on screen a bunch of extremely talents actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Dimple Kapadia, Mouni Roy among others. Why did you decide to migrate to Canada? We had a very good life in India, we owned a jewellery business there as well. But we were not happy about the pollution, law & order, and government policies. So we moved to Canada for a brighter future for our children. We migrated to Canada after receiving our Permanent Residency in 2017.
Where did you stay when you reached Canada? We stayed at a really close family friend’s house and then we bought our own place.

What were your first impressions of Canada? The weather is good, the children’s studies is great, there are lots of opportunities and people are warm and friendly.
What challenges did you face when you and your family moved here? It took about six months to adjust and adapt to life in Canada but then we were able to get into the routine of things and understand more about Canadian society. It has been hard to get back on our own feet and get our jewellery business Sunaar going. Networking was difficult for establishing our business in a new environment.
How was your experience getting a job here? Ritu: It was a little difficult initially but once we got the help that we needed financially and to network with the people it all worked out beautifully. My husband is the

owner and looks after everything. I help him as his assistant at the store. Prior to being there at the store I was a stay-at-home mom.
How do you see your future in Canada? We want our jewelry store to prosper and be number one. We want to expand our business within the Lower Mainland and also across Canada in cities like Toronto. We want our children to do great academically and be in high positions in life.
We made a fantastic decision by moving to Canada. We love that people are very sociable and likeable. It is great for the kids as well. We are lucky to be living here."
How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?
What resolutions were made for yourself or family?
We absolutely love it. It has been four years and it feels like home. We made a fantastic decision by moving to Canada. We love that people are very sociable and likeable. It is great for the kids as well. We are lucky to be living here.
We want to make sure we thrive in the coming years and work on ourselves. We want the same for our family members. We want to be happy and make sure others around us our happy as well.
Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada?
Don’t shy away from problems no matter how big or small. You will only grow in Canada if you are sincere, hardworking and dedicated to what you do. So be kind, make connections, and keep at it.
By God’s grace, apart from some initial struggles of getting our business going and adapting to the Canadian lifestyle, thankfully we had nothing major in terms of obstacles.
Any advice for future immigrants?
