1 Tell us about your experience being the

Surrey City councilor as it was your first time? It was very overwhelming in the beginning. It was a very steep learning curve. All the councilors that got elected in 2018 were new but I was very fortunate to have Mayor Doug MacCallum on our team as our leader who helped me in gaining an understanding of my role as a councillor.

MANDEEP NAGRA

2 What is one accomplishment that you are

proud of?

There are number of things that I am always going to be very proud of that we achieved in last four year as a team. We are building newton rec center which is going to have an Olympic size pool, volleyball courts, badminton courts, and a number of other facilities on 7 acres. 150 million dollars for this project has already been allocated in the budget. I am also very proud of the fact that I am a part of the team that promised Surrey residents, its own Police department and we delivered. We now have over 200 officers in SPS.

COUNCILLOR

SURREY CITY

All the councillors that got elected in 2018 were new but I was very fortunate to have Mayor Doug McCallum on our team as our leader who helped me in gaining an understanding of my role as a councillor”

3 There are new faces in the team it’s different

than the one last year, how has the working relationship been?

In politics, you will meet lots of people with different opinions, people who do not agree with you or people that have completely opposite ways of doing things, what’s important is that we listen to each other, be respectful and find a common grounds to work for the betterment of the society. 4 Mayor Doug McCallum said during his 2022

State of the City Address on June 1 that “for four straight years” the council has held the residential property tax rate at 2.9 per cent, “which puts Surrey in the bottom third in all of Metro Vancouver.” Coun. Linda Annis, of the Surrey First slate, noted the parcel tax increase continues in 2022 but is not factored into the 2.9 per cent. She says many property tax bills are now coming in at 20 per cent higher than last year. So how can Mayor’s statement be considered accurate? Its a fact that our property tax rate stayed at 2.9% and Surrey is third from bottom in property taxes in our region. I don’t know where other Councillors are getting their figures from.

5 B.C.’s real estate market saw yet another

drop in June. Home sales fell 35.7 per cent compared to the same month last year, according to the BC Real Estate Association (BCREA) so will we see a lowering of taxes as a result of the drop? Our commitment to our residents is that we will not increase our rates for at least the next couple of years. There are lots of other factors that play a role in property taxation including BC assessments and land values, and regional and provincial taxation. Majority of the property taxes that municipalities collect are on behalf of the province and Metro Vancouver that goes towards

schools and water, sanitary, and sewer services that Metro Vancouver is responsible for. 6 Housing Minister David Eby, is suggesting

the province may step in and override municipalities to speed up the pace of new housing approval. Where do you feel the City of Surrey lacked in expediting permits for housing? When it comes to land developments, planning, and permits there are a lot of red tapes that need to be eliminated both at the municipal and provincial levels. Province is equally responsible for some of the delays at their level which include approvals from transportation, fisheries, and WSA. I have witnessed that for some housing projects these approvals have taken up to years. In the last four years, our team brought a number of policies to expedite the process including 10 weeks of guaranteeing timeline for single-family permits. I know for some permits it is still taking longer than 10 weeks but our staff is working really hard to achieve this goal of 10 weeks permitting. When we got elected in 2018, average wait times were close to 30 weeks and we have almost cut that time in half.

DARPAN

TM

7 What do you feel will be the effect of this

move for the City of Surrey?

Any move by the provincial level to expedite housing projects will benefit Surrey. Our team strongly believes in increasing the supply of housing to create affordability. At our level, we will look at densifying transit-oriented corridors, and front-ending servicing of new NCPs so that new areas can open up. 8 Why should Surrey residents vote for

you and re-elect you to the position of councillor?

Our team delivered on all the promises that we made in 2018. We have approved 26 capital projects that are either finished, under construction, or in planning stages worth over 424 million in every neighborhood of Surrey. I was accessible throughout the term to listen and to understand the needs of our residents. I have sincerely put my efforts to make Surrey beautiful and progressive and now it’s up to the residents to decide. 9 Which areas will be your focus if you are

elected Councillor for a second term in the upcoming municipal election on October 15th?

It will be my honor to be elected for the second time as a counciLlor. There are number of things that are long overdue. Surrey is growing very fast and we really need to improve our road network to ease traffic congestion. 84th Ave connection will help reduce pressure on 88th ave, similarly, there are lots of other roads with missing segments that need to be connected and also widening of arterial roads. Building international-level sports facilities like cricket stadium, and a field hockey facility that can host international tournaments. We are already building Olympic size pool in newton. For our economic development, we need to focus on attracting international corporations to invest in Surrey to create more local highpaying jobs for our residents in tech, environment, energy, and manufacturing.

What’s a message you would like to share with the South Asian community?

DARPAN FEATURE ngulfed in the pages of a book are E more than a mere collection of words.

Books are keepers of our history, carrying within them the energy of all those who have written and read them. Uptaking the pious responsibility of guarding the rich history of the Sikh diaspora, Wanjara Nomad Collections has compiled a bespoke array of antiquities with the purpose of preserving, learning and sharing. The collection features invaluable books, maps, medals, ephemera, albums, swords, and art that traces back to various moments in Sikh history over past centuries. A reflection of passion, love, and unapologetic righteousness, Wanjara Nomad Collections is the vision of Raj Singh Bhandall. With a hunger to learn, and an unrelenting determination to unearth the past, Bhandall has devotedly put together a collection that can be understood and appreciated in the present. The only known collection of its kind in North America, Bhandall is tirelessly bringing together unmatchable treasures from all over the world under one roof. The collection is a testament to the desire to preserve, learn and share the history of Sikhism; from inception to present day. “The Sikh diaspora can be seen through “nomads” scattered throughout the world. It is the remembrance of our history that has led these nomads to come together, under one Nishan Sahib”, explains Bhandall. In line with this thought, Bhandall connected with his close friends, Jessi Dhanju and Sunny Khroud, to collectively bring to light and elucidate the moments in Sikh history that have led us to where we are as people today.

Jessi Dhanju is a human rights lawyer, entrenched in the understanding, and providing of solutions on international legal issues. He is passionate about understanding shifts in geopolitical power and the rise of authoritarianism, and how they are disrupting the dynamics for making progress on human rights globally. The committed community advocate dedicates his time to challenging stigma in the world, and through the Wanjara Nomad Collections, he aims to reconceptualize the Sikh precarity and minoritization globally. Sunny Khroud is a knowledgeable and passionate historian, who contributes to our shared understanding of how the past has influenced our present, and future. Khroud relentlessly advocates for everyone to preserve, learn and share our shared history of Sikhi. Khroud shares, “Having cataloged the entire collection, the experience has been transformational. There is an abundance of learning and enlightenment waiting to be found under each title.” Although ownership of these artifacts spans centuries, Wanjara Nomad Collections acts as the curator for this expanding collection. This private collection was created to analyze and transcreate the historical events that have left the Sikh Panth fear ridden of discussing historical atrocities perpetrated against its people. The aim is to inspire the change makers of the world to preserve and care for artifacts in their possession.

DARPAN FEATURE

The collection features many notable masterpieces and rare discoveries, such as the account of white slave trafficing, which is only now emerging from the archives and the pens of historians. Many written from the perspective of British colonizers, there are also collections of manuals, guides, census records, and reports dating back to the times of the British Empire’s East India Company. One such book, Proposals for Settling the East India Trade, was printed in 1696. Be it the rare first edition autobiography, Military Memoirs of Mr. George Thomas from 1805, or a book signed by the last emperor of the Sikh Kingdom, Maharaja Duleep Singh, dated June 18, 1856, Bhandall’s flourishing collection contains precious literary gems. During a time where digital libraries are becoming the norm more so than safeguarding physical literary copies, the Wanjara Nomad Collections is recognizing the need for preservation. Dhanju elaborates, “In a world of instantaneous digital availability, a book has to be uniquely digested using the senses. The feeling of a historical book, aging for centuries is unexplainable. The smell of the pages and the various places they have traveled tantalizes the senses. The appearance of a book, in its physical form, is graceful. The sound of pages turning is intoxicating. A physical book gives readers a more unique and fulfilling reading experience.”

A physical book gives readers a more unique and fulfilling reading experience.”

Furthermore, the team highlights that even digital documentation itself is enabled by safeguarding the physical elements of histories. The preservation of a physical book allows for the accurate vetting of digital documents. At the very least, this preservation of books in the physical form allows for authenticity to remain true to its truest form and intention. Digitalization has impacted all facets of art in its various forms. That said, the prevailing truth is that the original is, and always will remain unique.

DARPAN

TM

Upheld by such a noble mindset, the Wanjara Nomad Collections trio is nourishing this one-of-a-kind project with genuine passion, rather than with a monetization angle. With no intentions of profit, the overarching aim is to encourage a ripple effect across generations. Bhandall, Dhanju, and Khroud encourage the younger generations to be open to all channels of communication with their grandparents and parents. The team emphasizes the importance of engaging in this dialogue, asking questions, and absorbing this knowledge. Only then can history be passed onto future generations. Besides inquiring as to what artifacts may be within our own homes, the most important call-to-action is proactive preservation of such artifacts. After all, history will only be forgotten if we allow it to be forgotten. Although, especially across the Lower Mainland, Punjabi classes in higher education do exist, the focus is often aligned with views that are disengaged from the original concept of Sikhi. Bhandall notes, “History cannot be censored, rather it should be discussed. The Sikh terminology has no such word as censorship. We should acknowledge that, at times, we can be our own worst censor. We need to remove the blinders and be proud to discuss the glorious memories of our ancestors, including but not limited to the Ghallugharas and the Sikh Kingdom.” The holistic message is that too often, a community’s reference points become based entirely in other civilizations. There is a need to understand and appreciate the Sikh Civilization, and the historical reference points therein. This is an arduous battle of decolonizing the past, while ensuring that future thought processes are not recolonized.

To contribute to the cultural, social, and historical fabrics of Sikh history, Wanjara Nomad Collections is moving forward with the dream of setting up a museum as a repository of Sikh Heritage. More importantly, the ultimate goal is to instill the preservation of Sikh history into the conscious, and eventually, the subconscious of all - on an individual level. As the team shares, the future vision is to vow to remember, to be remembered, and for our pulse to remain in the essence and presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. While the collection is not yet accessible to the public, it is currently being compiled on the Wanjara Nomad Collections website, wanjaranomad.com. Meanwhile, working hands are meticulously restoring and preparing the physical pieces for eventual public display. For now, the team encourages the community to get involved by sharing their heirlooms and photos with Wanjara Nomad Collection, and create a part of their own preservation journey. With these efforts and beyond, Wanjara Nomad Collections surely stands in solidarity, with an iron will to authentically preserve history. Extending beyond just air purifiers and book vacuums, Bhandall, Dhanju, and Khroud care for the collection from their hearts. Unified are the shared energies of these individuals and the collection which they heartily continue to grow, truly signifying and beautifully embodying the art and passion of preservation with purpose.

MISS TEEN INTERNATIONAL

DARPAN SPOTLIGHT

By Dikshita Nahar

Beauty with a purpose is what

Samriddhi Singh embodies. While the world is filled with low selfconfidence and constantly feeling like they aren’t enough, Singh is working towards making people love themselves a little more. Samriddhi Singh is a 19 year old Vancouver -based actress, model, self-love educator, violence prevention facilitator and a pageant coach. She is the first teen to be representing Canada at the Miss Teen International pageant that is set to take place this year in Ecuador. Ever since she was a kid, she knew that she wanted to be an actor. She loved everything about acting and hence she started acting in theater productions with the Surrey Youth Theater Company at the age of six. This gave her wings to achieve her dream of being an actor. In 2015, she joined the Delta Film Academy and took up the opportunity to be a part of several short films with them. She also played the role of a photo double for a popular Netflix series a few years later. Later upon graduating high school in 2020, she

DARPAN SPOTLIGHT played the role of the villain in the children’s feature film - The Key To Christmas that opened up various avenues for her. Following this, she signed on to a major acting agency in Vancouver. She went on to finish her post-secondary education in film and television acting and has also been a part of another Netflix series. Apart from acting, she has also been a part of beauty pageants and has various laurels to add to her achievements. At the age of 14, she was crowned as the Miss Teenage Lower Mainland 2017, which also happened to be her first-ever beauty pageant. She was the 1st runner up of Miss Teen Canada 2020. She has also been crowned as Miss Personality British Columbia 2022 and Miss Teen International Canada 2022. This October 2022, she is going to be representing Canada at the biggest teen international pageant - Miss Teen International in Ecuador. While these achievements are inspiring and worth applauding, her journey has not been easy. She started her beauty pageant journey five years ago with an aim to provide representation for the South Asian Community and people with eczema. Growing up, she didn’t find anyone with eczema competing

in beauty pageants, modeling or even being featured prominently in the media industry. This lack of representation was the driving force that molded her to become a person who spreads body positivity and helps others feel good about themselves. Rewind back to five years where she wasn’t allowed to be a model because of her height and skin condition - eczema, but now, she is walking the ramp in fashion shows and is now representing 38 million people of Canada on the global level. All this is a result of her hard work and passion for acting as well as spreading the message of self-love and body positivity. As a vocal advocate of body positivity and self-love, she believes that everyone is worth achieving their dreams and not be discriminated against or affected by what others think or make us feel about us. In 2017, she started hosting self-love workshops for girls in the South Asian community where she teaches girls and young women how to love themselves, how to become confident in their body and how to accomplish their goals through self-love. What motivated you to start your hiking journey? My love for nature and the quest to find the best views that nature has to offer was the primary motivation for me to start hiking. As I started travelling to hike, I even travelled to Hong Kong for a hike, and my love for it just grew deeper.

What has been the most memorable hike that you’ve done so far? The hike to Berg Lake, which is a 21-kilometre hike, is the most memorable hike I’ve done to date. The view was to die for and it stays fresh in my memory even today.

Do you have any advice for people who are looking to start their outdoor adventure journey? My advice would be simple - just go for it but with the right preparation. It is important to educate yourself and learn about the outdoors. Always make sure to carry your essentials and take care of your personal safety. Safety and preparation make the journey more enjoyable. Don’t treat this as a competition. Hike at your own pace and just enjoy what nature has to offer along the way.

date which is a remarkable achievement for any age. He has done almost all hikes around Vancouver and enjoys spending time outdoors - exploring and inspiring people. I started hiking the trails in and around Stanley Park and just fell in love with hiking. I absolutely enjoy the company of fellow hikers and the energy they bring in. The views, hiking journey and people I meet along the way are the main driving forces for me to start hiking.

Jojo Das

He is the Program Director at Mountain Mentors which is a community that helps make mountain climbing more accessible and inclusive. He loves the mountains and has climbed almost every mountain in British Columbia and has summited Mt.Baker in the United States of America.

N

ature is for everyone - this is a statement that Jojo Das, a freelance photographer and programme director of Mountain Mentors truly believes in. Born in Kolkata India, he has lived across India, Canada, Indonesia, the United States of America, and Saudi Arabia, all before the age of 11. Until having moved to Vancouver in 2013 for his bachelor’s degree at UBC, he never considered himself to be an outdoor enthusiast. He developed a strong love and passion for rock climbing during his visits to Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh First Nations. What started as just an interest has now turned into his passion. He is a part of Mountain Mentors which is a community that helps make mountain climbing more accessible and inclusive. Mountain Mentors facilitate one-on-one mentorship where they pair mentees and mentors and provide the programming necessary to empower pairs to explore the world of mountain climbing. Jojo calls mountain climbing selective suffering as it has objective risks but the journey and the end make it all worthwhile. His first experience at the BC granite gave him a glimpse of the opportunity and challenges that these spaces bring. His own experiences of being mentored in outdoor environments left a profound impression and hence, he is working towards

36

creating an inclusive space for people to come to explore the mountains. In the past eight years, he is more and more motivated towards using his privilege, access and knowledge to create opportunities for others to be a part of this sport. He firmly believes that nature is for everyone and the walls are meant for climbing and not keeping people apart. Hence, he is working passionately towards creating spaces where people feel welcomed, supported, and equipped to learn and shape their own experiences. TM

What motivated you to start your mountain climbing journey? I was never really an outdoor person but having moved to Vancouver in 2013, I was introduced to the world of mountain climbing while studying at UBC. It slowly started as a hobby and now after eight years, it has given me a sense of purpose and also encouraged me to make this space more diverse and inclusive.

What has been the most memorable outdoor experience that you’ve had so far? The most memorable outdoor experience for me has to be my first alpine experience where we set up a base camp between Alberta and Calgary to witness Mars being close to planet Earth. This gave me an example of what could be done and the access it opens - geographically, psychologically and physically, giving me a unique experience that I’d treasure for life.

Do you have any advice for people who are looking to start their outdoor adventure journey? I firmly believe that the outdoors belong to everyone. While there are many barriers to entry in this space - the individual narrative is what matters the most. Find that courage, and self-confidence and seek mentorship by networking and being a part of organizations that are working to create a more inclusive space in the outdoor sports world. Be present and show up, this further encourages others to do the same. It is also important to keep your privilege in check and help pave a way for others.

urinder Sahdra, a transit supervisor who has been working with Translink for the last 22 years is someone who believes in enjoying the outdoors with a cause. Be it hiking, road biking, bike touring, overnight backpacking, or multi-day hiking, he enjoys everything outdoors. However, biking has a special place in his heart. He was never really an outdoor enthusiast but in 2006 he was inspired by his colleague who had hiked the Grand Canyon and thus his hiking journey began. Ever since 2006, he has hiked all the local mountains in British Columbia and also covered over six among the top 10 hikes in North America. His love for biking started when he started volunteering for the fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society called Ride To Survive in 2008. Ever since then, he has been volunteering with them for the past 10 years and also participated twice in the ride. He has been a crew member for the Ride To Survive where about 150-200 riders cycle through Kelowna to Delta in one day. He has helped the Canadian Cancer Society raise 50 million through this fundraiser. During the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of riding bicycles, they walked all the way from Vancouver to Delta which is over 100 kilometres in 10 hours to raise funds. He has also biked

from Vancouver to San Francisco in 20 days which is one of the longest rides he has done to date. He has a long list of the hikes and rides he has experienced so far, which is rather commendable and is attached to a social cause which is worth applauding. Be it the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Hawaii Crawl Out trails, Panorama Ridge, Black Tusk or Mount Everest Base Camp, he has done it all. Even during the Covid-19 lockdown, he took the opportunity to go on hikes that were still open and enjoyed a lot of time outdoors by hiking and biking. He says that during the Covid-19 lockdown, people got an opportunity to explore different parts of B.C and make the most of what this beautiful province has to offer. TM

What motivated you to start your hiking and biking journey? It was in 2006 when I was interacting with my colleague and he shared his experience of hiking the Grand Canyon. This particular conversation caught my interest and led me into the wonderful world of hiking. My biking journey started when I was volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society as a crew member for their fundraiser - Ride To Survive in 2008.

What has been the most memorable outdoor experience that you’ve had so far? While I can’t really point out a single hike or bike ride that is close to my heart as each one has its own memories and experience, the ones that top my list are the Half Dome in Yosemite, Everest Base Camp, Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon in Utah.

Do you have any advice for people who are looking to start their outdoor adventure journey? My advice is pretty simple and straightforward - just get out and explore the beautiful backyard that mother nature has given us. Make sure to do your homework about personal safety and learn about the outdoors. Always be prepared with your essentials to make it an enjoyable experience and pay attention to your surroundings.

ducation is the most powerful tool that one can use to change the world. Sarthak Tyagi is living up to this very statement. The future of British Columbia is in good hands as youngsters like Sarthak are working hard to use their knowledge, education and skills to bring about a positive change in the world. Sarthak is one of the recipients of the $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship which is Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM scholarship. The Schulic Leadership Scholarship is awarded to enterpreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Sarthak moved to Canada as an immigrant in 2016 and received ELL (English Language Learner) support throughout his schooling. The support he received has benefited him in helping overcome challenging barri-

ers and settle down into a new culture and life in Canada, states Sarthak. Being raised in a low-income immigrant family, Sarthak understands well the cultural and financial challenges of many of his peers. He uses this experience and what he has learned from living in a low-income community to identify and create opportunities for others.

SAMEER KAUSHAL

A grade 12 student at Queen Elizabeth Secondary High School, he is the President of Learn Lab, where he mentors and tutors at-risk pupils. The major goal of this program is to model and guide students toward making socially responsible decisions. He further uses his passion for engineering to make a positive change in the lives of others. Sarthak is an ideal candidate for this year’s Schulich Leaders as he has an inherent interest in STEM which led him to design a Smart Navigation Cane to help assist the blind and visually impaired. This struck him after witnessing a visually impaired person get hit by a car while he was living in India. The cane scans the surrounding environment and buzzes/vibrates when it detects nearby obstructions. This innovative idea and design helped him achieve the dream of being a Schulich Leader. He has been in contact with several non-profit organizations globally to donate these canes. Sarthak is the captain of his school’s Royals Robotics team, which qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIRST Robotics Regional Championship. He is also an executive member of the Royal Brotherhood Leadership group, leads a weightlifting club, and helps organize various school events as part of the Student and Grad Council. Sarthak also volunteers with the Surrey Food Bank, a non-profit, charitable organization. Additionally, he leads a community gala that has raised over $100,000 for the Surrey Memorial Hospital by selling raffle tickets, holding contests, and seeking donations from outside community groups. He will be attending the University of British Columbia this fall to study Applied Sciences and is on his path to becoming a computer engineer. Apart from being a Schulich Leader, Sarthak is also a worthy recipient of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award for his undying volunteering work to help society and people in need. Young individuals like Sarthak pave a way for the rest and serve to be an inspiration to use their knowledge and skills for the benefit of society at large.

emiere ience “

Recliner seating transformed the movie-going experience and now Premiere Seating offers the next level of luxury.” Q. Tell us more about the Premiere Seating at Landmark Cinemas. Premiere seating is something we launched when we opened our Tamarack, Edmonton location. With the pandemic, the concept was that we were preparing to open the theatre that was actually under construction at that time, so keeping COVID-19 in mind we were looking at innovative experiences in order to continue bringing something premium to the customer. Landmark’s journey was really about going from the conventional seat to the recliner, which fundamentally was giving more space back to the customer. As we look at what Premiere does it just takes that a bit further with a little bit more luxury. So the personal space that you gain with the side table on each side with a nice wide recliner seat, with heat, with a side table and a console and a coat hook. It just gives you personal space all in privacy and enclosure for guests that want that sort of exclusive and focused experience on just watching the movie without any distractions, it’s a whole other level and guests are really enjoying it.

- Bill Walker

CEO, Landmark Cinemas

Q. What is the price of Premiere Seating? The prices are stated at $14.50 and the Premiere Seating adds a two-dollar up charge. Whether your seating will be in Laser Ultra, it would be the Laser Ultra-premium plus the Premiere Seat Premium. However, in a regular auditorium, we are going to be talking about $16.50 to watch one of these. We have them both at our Guildford, Surrey location as well as our New Westminster location.

Q. Which locations of Landmark Cinemas will have this seating? We are going to have it in 11 locations now. We have done it in Guildford, Surrey, in New Westminster and our three Calgary locations. And then two Edmonton locations, Fort McMurray, Regina, Saskatchewan, Whitby, Ontario and St.Catherines, Ontario.

Q. What other exciting news to enhance the movie going experience can people expect from Landmark Cinemas in the near future? I think you know it’s incumbent on us as theatre operators to continue to maintain a differential to what you can do at home. The other experience that we have in both New West and Guildford, Surrey is the Laser Ultra experience, which is taking the screen and sound combined with our seating experience to the next level. Visually it is the ultimate way to watch a movie and just continues to elevate that. The best way to see it is in those Laser Ultras. I think the rest of the experience for us is really about providing an overall experience and service that is hassle-free, convenient, and relaxing. TM JULY | AUGUST 2 022 43

It is a city that is welcoming for people in at all life stages and for newcomers to British Columbia or Canada. Given the positive momentum, it is not a surprise that it is becoming a major education hub with Kwantlen and Simon Fraser Universities already in place and the University of British Columbia set to join them. Her educational journey began in India, where she completed three years of her Bachelors of Science from Punjab Agricultural University. Coming from an entrepreneurial background, Mona grew up with her parents being influential role models. Her mother was an educator and successfully ran two higher secondary educational institutes, whereas her father was the backbone of the business side of these institutions. Although Mona ended up immigrating to Canada in the midst of her studies, she always carried the desire to potentially complete her education later in life. Nourishing her desire to run a professional business, Grewal eventually did decide to pursue her education at BCIT. Solid family support and a motivated, driven spirit helped Mona excel in her learning journey. In hindsight, the experience paid off in more ways than one. Today, Mona has extensive knowledge of the BC Building Code parts 3 and 9, which encompasses the residential and commercial sectors of design. Further, she still stays connected with BCIT through a mentorship program. Fueled with an eagerness to help young adults become successful in the industry, Mona works with new BCIT grads to help them attain experience working in the field. For Grewal, her company is nothing short of a dream come true. She has always had an unparalleled and undying passion for all things design whether that be form or function. Mona’s special trait entails looking at things from a different, creative perspective. Even something as simple as a dry leaf adorned with beautiful veins flowing naturally, is art to her, as it should be to any designer! Possessing a keen eye for details, Mona always ensured that things fit well with each other - be it her house or her outfits. Dressing up is both a passion and hobby of hers. In fact, Mona’s children often comment on how they have inherited a sense of fashion and design from her. Taking a look at Mona’s childhood, she was intrigued by simply admiring how her own mother handled businesses, and decorated and nurtured her home to create a welcoming and warm space. “Whether we cut fresh flowers and foliage from our garden to create a flower

arrangement, or to execute a perfect table setting to experience tea or dinner time, I learned that a quality design experience means every single interaction should be well-considered and all of it has to be coordinated and strategically implemented. Overall, bringing one’s vision to life is user-centered, enabled by listening to clients’ thoughts and ideas, and acknowledging their needs and wants to create a delightful experience.”, reveals Mona. Following such an ideology, at Paragon Design + Build Group, the team pays attention to the finer design details, while still maintaining the grand vision clients have in mind for both residential and commercial spaces. Design masterminds work tirelessly to create a phenomenal space for clients that not only looks great, but is also functional. Whether it’s creating something new or adding a burst of flair to the old, Mona’s belief is to create spaces that make you want to stay awhile longer.

Contemporary design is about showcasing West Coast elements in a modern and cleaner way. Classic, yet timeless design is ornate with carved moldings, but it can be an eclectic mixed with a modern style to add a fresh flare. Mid-century modern design endures after centuries because of its simple and curved contours, along with minimal geometric patterns and natural wood, coupled with large windows that bring natural light portrayed in a modern setting.

• At Paragon Design + Build Group, it is acknowledged that architecture and interior design carry a broad spectrum of professional services. Paragon Design + Build Group is a boutique firm that provides its customers residential permit drawings and tenant improvement drawings with complete interior design services for both residential and commercial projects along with full service project management to ensure your vision stays true throughout!

DARPAN FEATURE regarding extreme weather events. We also have the economic implications of the pandemic and the dislocation taking the form of rapidly increasing prices, inflation, and rising fuel price. At the same time, we’ve seen the ongoing housing affordability crisis, which remains a huge challenge and has only grown during Mr Horgan’s time in office. The new government will have its hands full dealing with these economic issues. They’re particularly challenging because many defy any kind of simple solution that typically takes a decade or more to really impact the housing supply through the support for social housing.

ith a PhD in political science, Stewart Prest researches, writes and teaches about various areas of political science, including provincial and federal Canadian politics and institutions, comparative politics, civil conflict and contentious politics, and foreign policy. The common theme that reflects in his work is the role of institutions in enabling and constraining effective decision-making in various contexts. He has a PhD in political science from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree in international affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa. He currently teaches at Douglas College and Simon Fraser University and held an SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship at Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. consideration given the fact he just recovered from cancer. It also provides the BC with NDP time to undergo a leadership campaign, have a successor in place, and prepare for the next election, which we still don’t expect until 2024. So, the timing makes sense from a personal and a political perspective. Q. What are your thoughts on who would be replacing Mr Horgan? In the last couple of days, it has started to look like this is David Eby’s race to lose. The attorney general was one of the early favorites to replace Mr Horgan and was even looking at taking a run at the leadership when Mr Horgan won it back in 2014. So, this is not a surprising development. Also, one of his main potential rivals, Ravi Kahlon, has announced his intention not to run and has thrown his support behind Mr Eby. The race is now starting to look more like a potential coronation for Mr Eby.

Q. What are your views on the stepping down of the BC Premier - John Horgan?

Q. What does the province’s future hold regarding governance and leadership?

I think it’s a reflection of Mr Horgan taking stock of where he is both in terms of his political career and his personal situation and deciding that this is a good time to take a step back both politically and personally. It is unusual to see politicians leave when they’re more or less on top. What Mr Horgan is doing is an interesting development, but it makes a lot of sense. Personally, he gets to spend more time with his wife and family. That is no minor

We can look back on the last five years of Mr Horgan’s time in office as premier as being marked by a whole host of crises related to climate - extreme weather and the pandemic along with its social and economic impact. In the future, the province would have a new set of challenges that are just as significant but take different forms. However, we will continue to have issues

We can look back on the last five years of Mr Horgan’s time in office as premier as being marked by a whole host of crises related to climate - extreme Q. What does this move look like for the BC NDP overall as a party? Well, I think it puts the NDP in a pretty good position to try to renew their leadership and get ready to compete in the next election. This is the party that’s already five years into leadership but doesn’t seem like it is growing unpopular with the population. BC NDP is still quite competitive in any polling we’ve seen. Kevin Falcon, the leader of the liberals, is trying to change that. He will still have his hands full trying to make a case for British Colombians to change. All that will depend on the next couple of years and whether the new leader is Mr Eby or someone else who can connect with voters in the same way Mr Horgan has been able to. Q. What are your thoughts on the upcoming election - the provincial 2024? It is still a long way off, and there is a significant possibility that we don’t know what that election will be about. Although, you can expect that affordability concerns and the cost of living will never be too far from people’s minds as it is the economic reality that we are in. Though it is hard to judge at the moment, we’re going to see stiff competition between the BC Liberal and the BC NDP to put forward a more compelling vision for the province. The NDP still seems to have the upper hand among British Colombians, particularly in the province’s urban and suburban areas, as the BC NDP resonates with their interest. The BC NDP, under Mr Horgan, has managed to capture the centre of the political landscape and the progressive voters they traditionally relied upon.

environment both at home and outside is one of the major problems faced by the underprivileged in India. While there are various NGOs and support groups that aim to educate children, there are very few NGOs like Yein Udaan, which focuses on not just providing children with academic and extra-curricular training but also helping their families in developing skills and enhancing their learning. They believe that the standards of living can be sustainably improved when all stakeholders in the home are empowered equally. “Yein Udaan” is an amalgamation of two words from Tamil & Hindi - Yein which means “my” or “mine” in Tamil and Udaan which means - “Flight” or “Take-off”, translating to “My take-off.” The name has an influence of the culture of their impact groups in South India and the Founder - Vedika Agarwal’s cultural roots from North India. At Yein Udaan, they aim to work on building and enhancing the holistic development of underprivileged children by providing them with both academic and extra-curricular training. They believe that building a skill-set that is independent of academic features will help children grow into confident and self-

aware individuals. They not just work with the enrolled students but also their parents as they believe that the impact will be sustainable only if parents are involved in their child’s learning and progress. They run post-school learning centres or learning labs where the student gets individual care and is encouraged to not just be academically strong but also improve other skills that will enhance their overall development. The kids come from underprivileged backgrounds where they witness a whole lot of issues and abuse at home. Yein Udaan establishes community centres or “Launchpads” in low-income areas to help residents have a safe and judgement-free space to access endless learning opportunities. They work with children, adolescents, college students, young women and mothers who reside in these areas. They rent a space in low-income communities and provide sessions such as English language learning, counselling, dance and art classes and workshops, and healthbased sessions. They follow a three-fold approach. First, they enrol only those students whose parents are willing to commit to the minimum monthly time requirement for engagement at the centres. Once they have enrolled the impact

families, they run four programs for the children – academic and English language, value education, life and soft skills, and extra-curricular, while simultaneously conducting sessions to build parents’ engagement skills in their child’s education. Finally, in order to successfully implement the programs, they form partnerships with experts in their fields, to ensure the impact families have access to high-quality learning.

Mission Its mission is to create self-sustaining learning spaces to meet the vision of learning-engaged community members.

DARPAN SALUTES

About the Founder Yein Udaan was founded by Vedika Agarwal, a Teach For India fellow, in 2017 as she saw a lot of gaps in society when it comes to accessing quality education. Vedika has a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the World #1 UCL Institute of Education, UK and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. While in college, Vedika volunteered as a teacher to pre-teen girls who scaled fish at the docks every day to support their families. This experience moved her to apply for a Fellowship, wherein she taught 40 children from grades 2 to 5 in a public school in Chennai. After her Fellowship, Vedika Founded an NGO, ‘Yein Udaan’ to continue bridging the gap in society by generating access to learning opportunities in marginalised communities. She also serves as the School Coordinator at SVA School for Girls, a free school for 210 girls in a small village in Southern India. Vedika is a Commonwealth Awardee, who has won several accolades nationally and whose work has been published globally on CNN, Thomson Reuters, The Hindu and many more.

Initiatives • Community Engagement At Yein Udaan, they believe that their work doesn’t stop at the learning centres. In order to create a conducive environment for every family in the community, they conduct community engagement drives every four months. These drives enable their member families to spread awareness on sustainable and healthy living habits such as health, hygiene and sanitation. Through the drives, they are able to extend their support to every resident in the community by going to their doorstep.

learning opportunities for children to explore their talents but also keeps them safe in the community until their parents return home from work at night. Children also have access to a nutritious meal at the lab school, fostering their health and wellbeing.

• English Pesallam Vaanga (Let’s Speak English) Having worked for a few years at the grassroots, they have repeatedly come across people’s desire to master spoken English. To empower them, they partner with Community Radio stations and deliver spoken English lessons every day. The lessons are designed to equip listeners with commonplace conversations which they can practice and perfect in their home or workplace. To make learning purposeful and sustainable, they create content for conversations that are simple, often used and contextual.

• Annual Production Every year, the children at Yein Udaan have the opportunity to showcase their talents and learnings on a prestigious stage through a theatrical performance. They work with a team of expert artists from theatre, dance, art and music for six months to create their annual show. This platform also gives the children an opportunity to deep-dive into social themes and spread awareness amongst the audience. The themes which have been explored over the years include alcoholism, domestic violence, climate change, and child rights.

• Penn Power (Woman Power) ‘Penn’ in Tamil means woman. In this initiative, they provide marginalised ladies learning opportunities to improve their skills level, employability, confidence and mental health.

• Holistic Learning At their lab schools, children engage in four programs each day. They are – English language, academic tutoring, extra-curricular activities and life skills development. Their school not only provides such alternative

Women develop skills to make products to earn an income and represent their work and community in renowned pop-ups which boosts their morale. They also partner with professional counsellors who empower these women by breaking taboos around mental health and wellbeing and systematically focusing on meeting their mental health needs.

• My Appa, Yein Hero (My Dad, My Hero) In India, the onus of parenting often rests on the mother. Fathers are perceived as the breadwinners who play a minimal role in childcare. However, they have met several fathers who are playing an active role in their child’s learning and growth and are seeking support to strengthen this role. To bridge this gap and change traditional mindsets, they run support groups for fathers where we provide them with tools and resources to build healthy relationships with their children and family, further creating a stable home environment. Apart from these initiatives, they have also worked towards providing care and much-needed help to the underprivileged and marginalized communities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

How can we contribute? At Yein Udaan, you can make a difference by either being a part of their team by being a volunteer or interning with them. You can also partner with them to provide some service that would benefit the children as well as be a host for their events. They also have a small online shop set up where you can buy sustainable goods made by the women of these marginalized communities. You can donate to help the NGO and the families associated with them. They use 6.38 % on admin expenses and 93.62 % on program costs when one donates. Make the tandoori chicken and let it cool down. Once it is cooled down pull the chicken meat. For making the quesedilla, take the whole wheat and corn tortilla wrap and apply olive oil or clarified butter on one side of the tortilla. Pour the makhani gravy on the tortilla and spread it around.

Fill half side of the tortilla with pulled tandoori chicken. Put some chopped onions and grated mature cheddar on top of the chicken. Break some coriander leaves and put it on top of the chicken. Fold the tortilla and press it gently on the sides. Apply olive oil on the folded side. Gently lift the wrapped tortilla and place it on a hot grilling pan. Grill it for a minute and apply olive oil on the other side. Carefully lift it using a spatula and turn the other side. Grill for another minute, when it is nice and crispy take it out from the grilling pan. Put it on a chopping board, using a sharp knife cut it into three triangles. Plate it and serve it hot.

A h yes! Finally, “School’s out for summer!” and finally a little bit of freedom away from

structure and schoolwork for kids across the country. I can still remember the sound of that final bell before everyone was let out of the doors one last time before having to return for the start of a new year. Although the kids must be super excited for these next two months, their parents are slightly nervous, especially if they haven’t figured out what their children will be doing all summer. For most parents, the chief concern regarding the summer is the fact that there will be no homework, thereby stripping their children of academic stimulation. However, another area which I feel is becoming increasingly neglected is physical activity rates among children and youth. These inactivity rates are subsequently correlated with health implications which can have a lasting impact on the quality of life of future generations. Certain research suggests that about 40% of the usual volume of physical activity for children and youth occurs during school hours! That’s right, almost half of the movement kids do is at school, so now just guess what happens when they stop attending for eight weeks. Furthermore, only 15% of youth aged 5-17 were meeting the Canadian 24-hour Movement Guidelines before the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic . Since the onset of the pandemic, these numbers fell drastically, with only 4.8% of children aged 5-11 and 0.8% of youth aged 12-17 meeting Canada’s 24-hour movement guidelines! I understand that these statistics can be a lot to digest but let’s unpack some of this information together. The government has set forth guidelines for physical activity amongst children and youth in our country. One of the recommendations for those aged 5-17 is to get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity

every day! This can be done in various ways, whether through team sports, at school, or on their own with friends. However, as we have just learned, a tiny portion of the children and youth meet the guideline!

Why is this something we should all be concerned about? Research provided by Statistics Canada has shown that: “Regular physical activity among children and youth is related to improved cholesterol levels, blood pressure, body composition, bone density, physical fitness, academic achievement and aspects of mental health such as boosting self-esteem.”

DARPAN

What does the research suggest when it comes to inactivity and possessing poor habits like remaining sedentary for prolonged periods throughout the day? “Recreational sedentary behavior such as: watching TV or playing video games is linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and poorer scores in psychosocial health indicators such as body satisfaction.” Moreover, Canada has taken the guideline for physical activity one step further and created: The Canadian 24-hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth. After reading the recommendations, I don’t think I as, a health practitioner, could agree any more with what’s being suggested.

What exactly do these 24-hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth consist of? • Perform at least 60-minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day • Accumulate additional hours of light-physical activity through unstructured and structured activities such as walking or stretching • Limit screen time to no more than two hours per day • Get plenty of uninterrupted sleep. Children aged 5-13 should be sleeping 9-11 hours/day, with youth aged 14-17 sleeping 8-10 hours/day

One of the issues that most parents face is that when they leave their children to meet these guidelines on their own, it rarely ever happens. They may be able to keep themselves occupied for a day or two, and then eventually, they’ll be locked to the couch, in front of the TV, playing video games online as they communicate with their friends via headset. Finding programs and camps where you can enlist your children is one pivotal action you can take to battle inactivity. This will ensure that for a few days a week, they’ll be put in an environment with other youth where they can participate in structured physical activity.

DARPAN FITNESS Along with exercise, they’ll also have opportunities to socialize with peers their age which will positively impact their mental health and overall well-being. As your children grow into adulthood, their relationship with health and fitness will stem from the experiences that they’ve had in their youth. It is crucial to understand how physical activity and fitness is incorporated into everyday living while balancing it with all of the other demands of life. Raising your children to possess an obsessive singular focus (i.e., academics or athletics) can result in deficiencies in other areas of life, which may negatively impact adulthood. Furthermore, prioritizing health and fitness as a family by engaging in physical activity together, especially on vacation, will help convey the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle to your children. Our nuclear family and the environment that we exist in when at home are extremely crucial in understanding how to adopt healthy habits through a well-rounded approach. GLOBAL Indians

Q&A Tell us a little bit about your musical journey. Saaketh: I personally sang Carnatic music growing up, but there are a wide variety of musical backgrounds in the group. For example, some people have a Western choir background, others have a Hindustani music background, and some don’t have any formal music experience at all! The beauty of a cappella is that it brings together people from such diverse backgrounds, and allows us to work together on something while putting our own unique spins on it.

PENN MASALA

an A Capella Group that is making Indian Music Global By Dikshita Nahar

usic transcends boundaries and connects people across the globe. A capella, a form of music where people sing without musical instruments (choir-style music), is rapidly gaining popularity. An Indian group - Penn Masala, have carved their niche in the A capella world with a fan following that is spread around the world. They have many accolades and achievements in their kitty such as performing for President Obama at the White House, they have also been featured in the major-motion Hollywood movie Pitch Perfect 2, as well as performing at the 2014 IIFA awards and the 2018 Gaana Music Festival. They also had the privilege of performing for many Indian icons including Priyanka Chopra, AR Rahman,Sachin Tendulkar, and Mukesh Ambani.

pioneered South Asian a cappella in the United States. Penn Masala was born with the desire to create music that traversed traditional cultural boundaries and captured the experience of growing up with competing Eastern and Western cultures. As the first group in the world to bring the sounds of the Indian subcontinent to a cappella, they have consistently been at the forefront of South Asian-Western fusion. Their music has grown to attract fans from all backgrounds, and a wide range of cultures, and in turn, has influenced them to create magic.

Founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996, Penn Masala has successfully

Raghu: I found out about a cappella in high school when I came across some videos of Penn Masala on YouTube. It was really cool to see how songs were created using no instruments at all! What was your experience like while shooting for Pitch Perfect 2? Sachit: Well, no one in the group right now was in the group in 2015, when Pitch Perfect 2 was shot. Needless to say, it was an amazing opportunity for the group, and one that we are super grateful to have been a part of. Tell us about your new studio album release. Albert: We just released Midnight Oil, our 12th studio album! Midnight Oil was started in February 2020, almost immediately after the completion of our 11th album, Musafir, with the arrangements of Taare Zameen Par / Paradise and Om Shanti Om / September. The next couple of years brought a challenge unlike any the group has faced in its time, forcing us to find new methods to practice, arrange, record and produce our music virtually. Midnight Oil is the story of the group’s journey through the pandemic, both from that production standpoint and our musical identity. From My Future / Yeh Dooriyan / Kalank, which expressed our melancholy hopefulness during quarantine, to Hazy, a celebration of all that we have regained over the past year, each track on this album captures the group at a different stage of the long road back to an in-person world, as we grew together and found the sound we were looking for. We’re excited to share that our album is now available on most major streaming platforms!

A Capella is popular in the Western world. How has your journey been as an Indian group in this form of music? Vish: It’s been a really fun journey! We always try to push the boundaries when it comes to our fusion music. One of our most unique songs off the new album is Ragas of Malhar, which features interesting background parts that we’ve never tried doing before, along with new and unique tabla beatboxing. A lot of us grew up in environments where we were constantly switching between listening to American and Indian music, and through Masala, we try to make music that encapsulates both of these identities we grew up with. We hope our music empowers people to enjoy these two worlds at the same time, rather than separately! Any expert advice or tips for fellow A Cappella enthusiasts? Samarth: I think the biggest piece of advice I have is to always remember why you do what you do. It’s often easy to ride the wave of emotions that results from likes and interests in social media, but at the end of the day, us musicians only do this because we love it!

Now the classic retro style footwear is once again charming its way back into the hearts of women this season with various reinvented sophisticated styles. While traditionally, Mary Janes are defined by a strap across the foot, commonly fastened at the side by a buckle, rounded toe and block heels, this season, the cutesy style footwear arrives on the fashion radar with fresh interpretations. Without compromising the doll-like aesthetics, the new Mary Janes come in a variety of shapes, styles, and colours. Dazzling embellishments, chunkier soles, sky-high block heels, in an array of playful colours and fabrications like velvet, satin, leather, are the defining features of the new Mary Janes in town.

How can one resist the comfort of flats and the height of the heels? For the lovers of flatforms, which were a rage in the early 2000s, here’s some good news, the flatforms have seen a resurgence this year, and they are here to stay longer than expected. With their ability to strike a perfect balance between glam and edgy, flatforms are suitable for all occasions — brunches, lunches, dinners, parties — just wear your flatforms and rock the event. Available in various styles, colours, fabrications and materials, flatforms are sure to add style to your stride. Styling tips: Flatforms complement maxi dresses as well as wide-leg jeans and shorts. They can also be worn with breezy trousers, midi dresses and coord sets.

Clogs have been a hit on the fashion circuit since last year, and looking at their popularity amongst top brands like Versace, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Hermès, Gucci, and Givenchy, one thing is for sure – Clogs are here to stay. Although they may appear to be ridiculously ancient, the modern versions of clogs are not only comfortable but chic too and will help you to put your best foot forward, quite literally. Available in a range of colours and cosy materials, these chunkies are ideal for adding a dash of pizzazz to your outfits.

Styling tips: Easy to slide on and off, clogs are comfortable to wear throughout the day. However, being heavy in structure, they don’t always go well with dresses, rather they work best with androgynous styles. Clogs pair well with wide-leg jeans, linen pants, and dungarees. If you love experimenting, you can try them on with your suits too.

Metallics

Shinny metallic footwear is a huge trend in the fashion circuit this year. Right from celebrities to hi-end brands like Fendi, Max Mara, Dior, and Simone Rocha — everyone is endorsing this sparkly trend. Be it strappy heels, chunky platforms, loafers, boots, sleek oxfords, hologram heels or pumps — metallics in any style are a sure-fire way to add pizzazz and a bit of pop to your outfit. So go ahead, add some sparkle to your feet and shine one. Styling tips: Metallics may appear quite daring, but don’t shy away from the gloss. Right from skirts, maxi dresses, or crop tops, these sparkly, high gloss footwear will enhance the look of your outfit within seconds. Metallic knee-high boots are a big thing this season, and they can be easily paired with a short dress, skater skirt or a simple neutral shade dress. High-shine sneakers are also ideal to bring a shiny twist to your otherwise denim-t-shirt-clad casual look.

Mules Fisherman

Mules have been trending in footwear fashion for a while now, thanks to their eclectic and versatile nature. Marked by one simple strap, low-mid heels and easy to slip on, mules are the perfect go-to pairs to style any outfit. This season, the friendly mules have arrived with a playful spin — from chunky silhouettes to animal prints, sparkly embellishments to bold colours, fur-lined flats to pointed heels — Mules are not just happening but are also available in every imaginable style. Trust us, the right pair of mules has the power to turn a simple outfit into a work of art. So, it’s time to get a nice pedicure, slide into your fav pair of mules and take a stride, after all, it is Mule time! Styling tips: Opt for bold colour mules to add a dash of vibrancy to a dull outfit. You can add a bit of zing by pairing them with short chic dresses or skirts. Mules are extremely stylish, elegant and versatile, so they go effortlessly well with your denim and also your work and partywear.

Sandals

Looking for something simple but not too plain Jane either, then the fisherman sandals are your best bet this season. A hit across most runways, the versatile sandals are having a fashion moment and are a must-have in your closet. Less on the glamour quotient and high on comfort, these glorified versions of granddad sandals have been endorsed by the likes of Prada, Versace, Marni and others and are your ideal walking partner, which can be styled with most of your outfits. Styling tips: Although fisherman sandals may appear to be less glamourous, they are pretty much adaptable and can be chic too if paired with the right outfit. While the obvious choice is to wear them with denim, they can be paired with minimalist maxi dresses or skirts as well. Models have been seen giving it a stylish twist by wearing them with blazers and lacy dresses too.

The Glam is Back

Celebrations are back big time and so is getting glamorous again By Michele Marko

T

hey’re back! We’re talking big weddings and summer gatherings. And with masks essentially gone, that means faces are back on full display in all their beautiful, glammed up glory. This signifies that other parts of the face, like cheeks and lips, are getting attention too. “I think what we’re seeing a lot of trends for 2022, and this goes for weddings, any trends in general, I think with masks lifting… we’re seeing a massive resurgence in blush in particular,” says Ashley Manias, National Education Director for Benefit Cosmetics. “People are really into the bold blush. They’re into the bronze. One of the trends is sun kissed…or for some they say like a sunburnt look. Gone are the days when people are applying it [just] on the apples of the cheeks. We’re seeing them bringing it across the face and up: across the nose, on the apples of the cheek and then up toward the temples, a quarter of the way to the forehead.” She adds that blush is also being

used in as a contour with darker, plum shades. Not surprisingly lips are back in the spotlight too. “Any bold colours, translucent colours and brown hues straight from the ‘90s,” says Bellie Nguyen Marketing Specialist for Urban Decay Cosmetics. But like back in the day where it was a choice between a dramatic smoky eye and a bold lip, that applies to today’s trend of strong blush with a bold lip, says Manias. She advises it’s best to pick one of the two but admits she’s seeing the dominant choice being cheek over lip. “We’re finding more of a wash of colour on the lips, not so much like a full lipstick, more like a stain. It kind of complements the cheek,” Manias explains. When it comes to eyes, Manias says lashes and brows are full but softer. “It’s more of the lifted and sort of laminated look of a brow,” she says. “So, giving fullness but it still looks natural. It’s not blocked with pencils and colour… it’s just more of fluttery, feminine but [a] full look with both lashes and brow.”

DARPAN

TM

Nguyen concurs saying, “Brows are naturally full but polished, defined and well-groomed.” This lines up with Grace Lee’s, Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist, take on bridal beauty for this season who doesn’t think a lot has changed in terms of how brides want to look—simply a better, yet timeless, version of themselves. She says they don’t want to look back in 20 years to see a dated look in their wedding photos.

Any bold colours, translucent colours and brown hues straight from the ‘90s,”

Setting Spray which she says will “moisturize, brighten and smooth the skin back as if the makeup was freshly done.” Ultimately, whatever you choose, it’s about feeling beautiful in your own skin. Manias says to look for things that are universally flattering so you don’t have to think about it, just play with it “It’s meant to make you feel good, period,” Manias says. “It’s about just playing with it and finding out what works for you for your tones, and just having fun with it.”

Bellie Nguyen, Marketing Specialist for Urban Decay Cosmetics “I think most brides want to look like themselves but a little bit more special.” Lee says. “Whether that’s false eyelashes or a tiny bit more liner, stuff to make it a little bit more tweaked. But again, looking like themselves is key.” That said, the current look of soft fluttery lashes and brows fit this scenario. For bridesmaids, Lee sees more leeway in makeup styles, and they could have a little bit more fun with their look she says, acknowledging that brides usually let their attendants choose what they prefer or how they normally do their makeup. For mothers of the bride or groom, Lee finds they more often opt for a classic look and, like the bride, just want to present more polished versions of themselves. Manias says in the past mothers of the bride or groom were intimated by giving their skin a glow, something associated with sparkle and shimmer. She says that’s not the case now as products provide a lit-from-within effect rather than anything glittery. “They’re playing with highlighters, even if it’s a blush that has a satin finish to it,” she explains. “I’m seeing a lot more, not iridescent, but a highlight on more of a mature

skin. I think in the past a lot of women felt like maybe it wasn’t age appropriate. That’s not the case at all.” Overall, she says the look is the no makeup makeup look still but that it requires a lot of layers to achieve that effect. “There are a lot of layers but it’s the right product,” Manias says. “It’s the blends of the creams and the powders kind of together. Creating fullness or youthfulness to the face but in a really natural way where it’s not necessarily a lot of colour but there’s a lot of makeup.” How and what you apply to create that look is crucial to maintaining that makeup throughout the day or an evening event. Manias advises always starting with a primer, many of which blur imperfections and minimize pores like Benefit’s POREfessional Primer, to help the foundation and concealer adhere to the skin. Lee says many brands have products formulated to be long-wearing like Maybelline’s Superstay Vinyl Ink lip gloss meant to last 16 hours and Benefit’s 24-hour Boi-ing buildable concealer. “It’s also about layering it in a way that will stay on longer,” Lee says. “We have the setting sprays that really help. Setting your makeup in between layers really helps as well. If you do your foundation, spray and then your powder and spray it again. Those little steps do make you makeup stay on longer.” Nguyen adds the best way to refresh makeup is with a hydrating setting spray like the Urban Decay’s All Nighter Vitamin C

ome people leave a mark on the world that lives on forever. One such person who brought the Punjabi community into the limelight and made them feel proud about being a Punjabi, no matter where they live, was Sidhu Moosewala. Sidhu Moosewala is a self-made legend who was brutally killed at the age of 28 on May 29, 2022, while driving near his native village of Moosa in India’s Punjab state in a car with two associates. “Ni Ehda Uthuga Jawani Ch Janaja Mithiya” which translates to the funeral will happen in youth, was a line from his song - The Last Ride, that was released in May, just before his death. It gathered over 90 million views since then and it features the iconic crime scene where American rapper Tupac was murdered in his BMW in 1996. Shockingly, he met the same fate on May 20, 2022 which left millions across the world in shock and disbelief. In his last music video - The Last Ride, he stated that - “Many hated him, and many died wanting him... everything is revealed in the eyes of the young boy”, which seems like a truth being spoken about himself. Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, who is popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, hailed from a farmer’s family from Mansa district’s Moosa village in Punjab. He was an electrical engineer who graduated from Ludhiana’s Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in 2016 and later moved to Toronto where he pursued higher studies and released his first song “G Wagon” in 2017. His father, Balkaur Singh, is a retired government employee and a farmer, while mother Charan Kaur is the sarpanch or head of the Moosa village. “So High” in 2018 which made him a global name. His debut album PBX1 ranked 66th on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart and his hit single 47’ was ranked on the UK singles chart. His track “Bambiha Bole” also entered the top 5 list on the global YouTube music chart. The Moosetape tracks released in 2021 also garnered global popularity. Moosewala also later officially launched his record label 5911 records and most of his songs highlighted the Jatt Sikh Community. He made sense of the chaos faced through his songs which formed a deep connection between him & his fans. He made it big in every sense. Sidhu Moosewala was one of the first people who showed their unwavering support for the farmer’s protest which highlighted agitation against three farm laws on September 25, 2020. He even participated in the bandh in Mansa village. His unwavering support motivated other Punjabi singers to join the Farmer’s protest and support it. With a career that lasted for just four years, Sidhu Mossewala has become one of the most influential and prominent faces of Punjab’s blooming hiphop scene. From Delhi’s flamboyant parties to radios at tea stalls in rural India as well as every radio channel in Punjab to stereos on the streets of Canada, you can hear his songs blare and bring in a sense of belonging for Punjabis around the world. He has released three albums and more than 60 singles since 2017, with his latest track - SYL released after his death. He used to write, sing and compose at least one song a week. He had become a household name in Punjab and among Sikhs living across the world. His music was heavily TM influenced by the genre of gangster rap that

featured guns and fancy cars and showed that he was making sense of the life around him. With an unpolished commentary on the dark underbelly of rural Punjab that is influenced by drugs, crime and corruption, his lyrics struck a chord with the general audience, making him one of their own. Rap music as a genre often has lyrical expressions of revenge which has been captured in his songs too. One such example is stated in his hit track Jatt da Muqabla where he says “Don’t flutter so high, you birds, for if I want, I can buy the sky.” Sidhu Moosewala has not been a stranger to controversies. He has been criticized for promoting gun culture through his songs and his affinity for it can be seen in his Instagram posts too. He has never been afraid of stating things as they are and bringing the grim realities to the forefront. Since his death, fans and celebrities alike have paid their tribute and expressed their grief through social media. Drake paid a tribute to him by playing his songs 295 and G-Shit during his debut as a radio host for his show Table for One. Diljit Dosanjh, a celebrity singer and actor, paid an emotional tribute to late singer Sidhu Moosewala during his Vancouver show where he said “It is impossible to erase his name from heart”. Kapil Sharma, the famous comedian and actor also paid an emotional tribute to him during his show in Vancouver by singing his songs and having his visuals played in the background. Sidhu Moosewala recently got a special tribute at New York’s iconic Times Square. Huge billboards played clips of his song as fans stopped by to cheer for him.

For many fans across the world, this news came as a shock and it broke their hearts. “It feels more like a personal loss. He made us feel proud to be Punjabis and had carved a path for us in the world. His lyrics were hard-hitting and he brought a sense of belonging and oneness to the community”, says Dania Kaur, a medical student in Florence, Alabama. Sahiba Kaur Sangha, a writer and TedX speaker emotionally quoted, “I haven’t been able to eat, I haven’t been able to sleep. I kept trying my best to be normal but my mind keeps wandering toward Sidhu, will I ever be able to hear his songs with the same vibe again? I’ve never met him but he always felt like a family member. I never thought I’d never get a chance to meet him and I’ve never felt this love for any other actor or celebrity. He felt like a universal brother. His songs are my goto to face any situation in life. His songs helped me battle depression and gave me confidence. No one can ever replace him.” Her sister was the only girl among 200 students who did his famous “Thappi” at her graduation ceremony. Thappi is something that is traditionally done by men but she did it as a tribute as Sidhu said “My parents never limited my ability as a girl, instead they empowered me with respect and confidence to use my strength in any form necessary equal to a man”, in one of his songs. Another fan, Simran Sandhu, an HR professional from Canada penned down her tribute for Sidhu Moosewala stating “To say that you had a great flair with words is an understatement. To say that you were a legend who inspired millions is an understatement. To say that you came out of nowhere and shook the world with “So High” is an understatement. But to say that “I’m okay” when your passing has truly affected me both mentally and emotionally is the biggest understatement. You’ve left a void that can never be filled.” As they say, legends never die. Sidhu Moosewala will always be alive through his music and the impact he has created. The love from his fans and celebrities alike will keep his legacy going.

With the trailer of the film garnering heaps of praises from across the sporting fraternity, including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, this biographical sports drama certainly needs to be on your mustwatch list. Headlined by Taapsee Pannu, Shabaash Mithu depicts the inspirational story of the Indian icon — Mithali Raj, former Test and ODI captain of the Indian women’s national cricket team, who is one of the greatest female cricketers ever. The film chronicles all the ups and downs of her journey into the world of women’s cricket. Taapsee, who seems to have brought a charming believability to the role, said in an interview, “There are cricketers who have records under their name. There are cricketers who have a tremendous fan following. There are cricketers who inspire you and make you believe that if they can, so can you! And then there’s Mithali, who did all of this in her classic graceful style and, also changed the game of cricket where the presence of women is concerned.” Shabaash Mithu is a film not just for sports enthusiasts but for everyone who likes an inspiring tale.

SHAMSHERA Release date: July 22, 2022 Directed by: Karan Malhotra Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Vaani Kapoor The period action entertainer Shamshera had generated quite a buzz even before its recently dropped glorious trailer took the internet by storm for more than one

reason. The film is not only bringing back Ranbir Kapoor to the big screen after four long years (he was last seen in Sanju) but the versatile actor will also be seen playing the quintessential larger-than-life Hindi film hero for the first time in Shamshera. What’s more, this is the first time Ranbir will be seen in a double role. Yeah you heard us right — Ranbir is playing the title role of the fearless warrior Shamshera and his son Balli in the film. Ranbir said in a statement, “When the film was narrated to me, it wasn’t really offered to me as a double role. But when I heard the story, my immediate response to Aditya Chopra and Karan Malhotra was that let me play the father also! Because it is such a great role, it is such an interesting, juicy part for an actor to play. Then, I really had to convince Adi and Karan. I think after that Karan did a couple of look tests and that’s when he got convinced also. So, initially, it wasn’t offered to me, but it hooked me thoroughly as an actor. They were two unique characters, and for an actor like me, to play two distinctive characters and make them different was very challenging and very exciting for me.” The high-octane drama is set in the fictitious city of Kaza and chronicles the story of a dacoit fighting for the cause of his tribe and independence from British rule.

There is a helluva reason to be excited about this action-thriller. For starters, the Ek Villain Returns, as the title suggests, is the much-awaited sequel to the 2014 hit film — Ek Villain, what’s more, the film supposedly has more than one villain this time around. While the makers are tight-lipped about the film’s plot, director Mohit Suri revealed in a statement, “In this film, the girls are also playing villains. Me and Ekta (Kapoor) are trying to build on a whole series of villains and different characters, who are all connected to each other.” He added, “Ek Villain was my passion project and a labour of love. The kind of love that I still receive for Ek Villain overwhelms me. I am sure with Ek Villain Returns, the love is only going to grow bigger. And while I cannot reveal much about the film, I can assure you that it will be a thrilling roller-coaster ride.” Headlined by action star John Abraham and Arjun Kapoor, we certainly can’t wait to experience this thrilling ride.

Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has piqued the curiosity of the audience ever since it was announced as the official adaptation of Tom Hanks’ 1994 classic Forrest Gump. While perfectionist Aamir Khan is truly a master at becoming one with the character, what is intriguing about the Indian adaptation of Forrest Gump is the topics it will touch upon. The Tom Hanks-starrer had bravely highlighted burning topics and defining historical events in the 20-century United States, so we can’t wait to see what this Aamir Khan film has to offer. While not much is known about the Indian remake, talking about the film, Aamir said, “Forrest Gump is one of my favourite films. Always thought if I could make an Indian adaptation, it has to be of this film.” The film is adapted by Atul Kulkarni and features Kareena Kapoor Khan and south star Naga Chaitanya. Further describing his character, Aamir said in an interview, “This character is very lovable. He’s so innocent… he has got this different way of looking at things. He’s someone you immediately empathise with when you connect. Unless I perform it badly (laughs), then it’s a different game. As a written character, it’s such that you’d fall in love with him straight away.” Well, when Mr. Perfectionist is gracing the screen, it is hard not to fall in love with him, right!

RAKSHA BANDHAN Release date: August 11, 2022 Directed by: Aanand L Rai Starring: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Neeraj Sood, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth Filmmaker Aanand L Rai is known to create vibrant, feel-good, slice-of-life cinema and going by the trailer of Raksha Bandhan, it seems like the director is all set to once again touch the chord of his audiences with a roller-coaster ride of pure emotions. Starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead, Raksha Bandhan is inspired by the Pakistani romantic comedy — Load Wedding and revolves around the love, bonding and attachment between brother-sisters. The film also tackles the issue of dowry. Commenting about the film Akshay said, “Like, I did ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, ‘Padman’. Similarly, in this film, we are not only talking about dowry but also offering a solution to the country and the world.” Now with such a topic, this one certainly makes it to the must-watch list.

One name that instinctively pops up in the fashion world while talking about Indian-heritage-inspired clothing is that of model-turned-designer — late Simar Dugal. With intricate craftsmanship and eloquence at the core of her design ethos, Simar Dugal’s eponymous label has been loved for passionately bringing forward Indian aesthetics and culture through sophisticated silhouettes. Two years after her untimely death, Simar Dugal’s label, under the leadership of her son — Arjan Dugal, still dominates the ethnic fashion realm with its surreal designs and collections that seamlessly blend India’s rich cultural heritage with a modern aesthetic.

ZIBA — the latest edit by Simar Dugal label — reflects everything the brand is renowned for, and the sartorial pieces from the collection are sure to take your breath away with their intricate artisanship.

Giving an insight into the collection, couturier Arjan Dugal, who is taking forward his mother’s legacy, says, “Ziba, like the Sahar Collection before it, is an ode to my mother (Simar Dugal) and the person that she was. Her aesthetic, her views of her celebration of Indian fabrics, woven and embroidered, the revival of older Indian embroideries with a modern touch, and from pieta dura motifs to phulkari to Papier-mâché in a whole new light — each collection is an amalgam of Ma and me. She loved prints, gota, vintage crafts and textiles, whereas my aesthetic leans more towards embroidery, detailing and incorporating bursts of colour in the garments. I stand by my mother’s philosophy of reviving traditional silhouettes and embroidery techniques, but I seek my own perspective on existing templates. Both the Sahar and the Ziba collection stand true to this ideal.” He adds, “For Ziba, I have used some of her older, recurring motifs and adapted them to different silhouettes and treatments, changing them as per current trends as well as making them more appealing to a younger generation. I have used traditional treatments that my mother always used, such as Dori and Aari embroidery, and adapted it to different motifs and cuts and created the Star Shararas.”

Not surprisingly, the muse for Ziba, which resonates with the Mughal regalia with its scintillating and delicate workmanship, is none other than Simar Dugal, who was also dubbed India’s first supermodel. “Ma’s designs, like her life, were free from fear. They were unapologetic and bold. I learned to identify different textiles and designs at my mother’s knee. We spent many vacations sitting in the corner of little shops in the hills or deep within a village while my mother scoured the place from top to bottom for her latest find. My love for textile, crafts, design and anything out of the ordinary is not just inherited but also ingrained in me. Every collection is a celebration of Ma, her teachings, and her vision. My mother is and will always be the inspiration behind my designs,” informs Arjan, who was a menswear designer before taking charge of his mother’s label. Arjan is successfully running his eponymous label Arjan Dugal since 2014, which has a vastly different vibe from that of his mother’s label. “Arjan Dugal as a brand is classic but modern and eclectic. Simar Dugal is a vintage, artistic brand with an eternal appeal,” explains Arjan, who has taken over as the Creative Head of the Simar Dugal brand. He adds, “Each collection from Simar Dugal has taught me so much, and I delve to the very depths of each collection and its fabrics and treatments before I even start designing.” While the brand Simar Dugal has already carved a niche for itself in the fashion industry and is a favorite among Bollywood divas like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Neetu Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Malaika Arora and others, the brand is further growing under Arjan’s creative leadership. “We were already well known for our gota use and treatments, so we expanded heavily into gota lehengas. In every collection, we now launch 3-4 different types of gota lehengas and have created a niche for ourselves in the market.

We have also adapted older embroidery techniques and fabrics to younger silhouettes such as peplums and dhoti pants. We have expanded into bridal lehengas as embroideries are my passion, and I found that to be the optimum outlet. The Namrita Lehenga from the Sahar collection and the Chinar and Ek Taar Lehenga from the Ziba collection are such examples,” says Arjan. Speaking about Ziba, every silhouette in the collection tells a unique story and the name of the collection — Ziba also has a story behind it. The versatile designer, who has learnt the ropes of designing from his mother, reveals, “The collections are named in line with the times as well as a reflection of the collection. Our last collection was called Sahar which means ‘New Dawn.’ That was the first complete collection which underwent the entire process from inception to execution after I took over as Creative Head of the brand. Ma was a tough woman who broke stereotypes. She became a model after having me and became India’s first supermodel. She ran a successful designer label despite several personal hurdles. She passed away after battling an illness for more than three years. The Simar Dugal brand honors the women of today and the name ‘Ziba’ is to signify the beauty of substance, internally and externally.” Handcrafted with meticulous attention to the smallest detail; the regal collection is full of beguiling designs and is a rendezvous of culture and modernity. From lehengas dipped in red, pink, and navy to classic shararas and jackets in mustard, ivory, and sea greens — the collection is a kaleidoscope of colors and silhouettes. “The current collection has colors ranging from light pastels to noir black and includes ivories, mustards, sea greens, fuchsias, tangerines, reds, and different shades of blue. Our favorite colors are ivory/cream, mustard, sea green and navy, so you will always find these colors across all our collections,” explains Arjan.

Exquisitely crafted, Ziba portrays a colorful harmony of various handicrafts, blending effortlessly with Simar Dugal’s signature Gota and Ari work. Highlighting the techniques used to create Ziba, Arjan says, “We always use traditional techniques and fabrics. This collection includes Dori and Aari work, Zardozi, Kantha and Chicken stitches,” While attention to detail, handcrafted embellishments, high-end fabrics, and signature floral patterns are the USP of the label, the Ek Taar stands out in Ziba, “The Ek Taar, with embroidered chevron patterns in zari, gota applique with tassels all over the body, stands out in this collection. It is a quirky, boho take on the usual treatments my mother used,” says Arjan. The designer excitedly also gives an insight into their upcoming collection, “Our Fall Winter Collection this year will be reflective of traditional fabrics, techniques, styles, and treatments. It is going to be like something you have never seen before. Gota and applique from another world, seamless thread embroidery, use of shading techniques with thread, Dori and Aari, Zardozi and sequence. This one is going to be something special. We are looking forward to launching that in the coming months.” Meanwhile, the Ziba Collection begins from INR 22,000 for the Pret Pieces and goes up to INR 2,20,000/- for the bridal lehengas. Every silhouette in the collection takes you on an old-world voyage with its exquisite craft and extraordinary designs. Simar Dugal’s stunning designs can be purchased from the brand’s store in New Delhi or through several multi-designer stores online. DARPAN Weddings

Q: City of Residence: Gurleen: I was born and raised in Surrey and lived in Burnaby when I met Amitoj. Amitoj: I was born and raised in Delta and lived in Seattle when Gurleen and I started dating.

Q: What do you love most about one another?

Gurleen: Having been married for nearly a year, I have come to love each day shared with Amitoj. I love his steady carriage of joy into the quiet rhythms of domestic life. I love his habit of wondering aloud, as it prompts me to confront the seemingly quotidian as entirely unfamiliar. I love his sincere desire to seek out, rather than obscure, his biases and assumptions and understand how they limit his self-knowledge. I love his uniform and unaffected humility. And, most of all, I love that his avowed admiration for reasoning does not sway when reason requires that he reconsider his position.

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favorite moment?

Amitoj: There isn’t a thing that I don’t love about Gurleen. She has a very affectionate, kind, and considerate way of communicating, making me feel warm inside. She often writes me delightful poems and letters to celebrate special occasions. She encourages me to be better by holding me accountable for my promises. Her passion for her academics, work and volunteer commitments inspire me. I enjoy the friendly banter between us and the inside jokes we’ve created through the years. For these reasons and countless more, she’s my partner for life.

Gurleen: Our wedding took place at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar in New Westminster. My favourite moment was the Anand Karaj ceremony itself. As I folded my hands in prayer and sat in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, I was grateful to have shared in the warmth and love of Waheguruji’s eternal embrace with all those present. I found comfort in forging a new set of relations while honouring all those that had brought me safely to that point.

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

Gurleen: My wedding outfit was a pale pink lehenga from Anita Dongre’s Love Song collection. I was especially drawn to its hand-painted motifs of forest creatures and ink-feathered cranes. I had never imagined that I would have the privilege of wearing something so beautiful. This great gift, along with many others, I owe to my parents. Amitoj: I wore a cream-based achkan with thread-work embroidery in shades of both pink and blue to complement Gurleen’s lehenga.

Five models later, the Honda

Odyssey remains a family favourite within the segment that, to be fair, is not overly robust in Canada. Still, this hasn’t deterred the Japanese manufacturer from giving buyers quite a bit of bang for the buck for the recently refreshed minivan. Marketed as the “ultimate family vehicle,” the fifth-generation exterior receives quite the update. All grades receive more powerful and efficient LED headlights, integrated into a new sleeker black three slat grille wearing a top chrome strip replacing the outgoing wing design. The central air intake and foglamp bezels have been slimmed down providing a contemporary look. On the opposite end, the rear wing between the taillights are also replaced by a complementary horizon-

As always, the sliding doors on either side may be opened and closed remotely via the fob, and in addition to being super convenient for loading people and stuff, is a hit with the kids. Inside, there’s fresh finger-print-magnet piano black trim on the doors and front door handles. Providing a pop of colour are the slightly restyled seating boasting contrast stitching and tri-colour floor mats. And now, the front-row passenger too will find adjustable lumbar controls available (EX-L and up). Another change is the ability of the middle bench to lay nearly flat making

Our top-of-the-line Touring loaner had some extra goodies like 19-inch alloy wheels, perforated leather for the front two rows, exclusive dash decoration and illuminated USB ports. 10-speed automatic transmission. Its 280 horses is plenty to peel out the front tires upon spirited application of the accelerator, however the fuel consumption manages to stay modest. A couple of pieces of technology help: engine stopstart and Variable Cylinder Management that can switch between three and six-cylinder operation depending on load. A leader in the safety space — in fact last year earning the coveted Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating — the vehicle is loaded with standard driver assist features like emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and assist, dynamic cruise control and many others. As well, the stiff and strong underlying Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure is proven to protect occupants in the event of a collision. For North American customers, the 2022 Honda Odyssey is built in Lincoln, Alabama and retails for a starting price of MSRP $44,645.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 Electricity in the air

By Benjamin Yong

Hyundai is really mixing things up in an

otherwise fairly mundane passenger EV segment with the launch of the all-new IONIQ 5. Looking like nothing else on the road, the crossover sports neo-classical design, a car-esque driving experience and can travel further on a single charge than expected at its modest price point. Read on. “IONIQ 5 introduces the Hyundai brand to a whole new set of buyers, says José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO, in a press release. “Once behind the steering wheel, they are going to be shocked by the range, power, comfort, interior space and advanced technology. Owning one is going to be a new experience and lifestyle that only the IONIQ brand can provide.” Aesthetically, the vehicle is surprisingly similar to the the manufacturer’s 45 concept — paying homage to the 1974 aircraft-inspired Pony Coupe Concept — debuted at the International Motor Show in Germany two years ago. Intended capturing a sense the past, present and future, highlights of the exterior include the dot-matrix-like rectangular Parametric Pixel LED headlamps, angular V-shaped front bumper hiding daytime running lights along the top edge, and 20-inch aero-optimized wheels resembling rollers you’d see on a vintage European five-door. Though the hidden

door handles are neat and reduce drag, they can be finicky when popping in and out and can pinch a finger if not careful. An extra-long 3,000 millimetre wheelbase — the longest in the North American product portfolio — not only allows for super-short overhangs resulting in a cool stubby appearance, but significantly opens up the interior space. And because the battery pack is mounted under the car, the cabin boasts a flat floor so passengers can stretch out their legs. The 5 also introduces the innovative Universal Island, a sliding centre console that can move forwards and backwards up to 140 millimetres meaning drivers can exit out either side. Two 12.3-inch adjoined screens make up the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Operation is seamless (the decision to use a switch rather than rotary knob for tuning is perplexing, however) and similar to other current Hyundai and Kia offerings on the market, with the exception of a companyfirst augmented-reality head-up display. much more dynamic. Customers can choose from a variety of trims combining different powertrain and battery setups to suit individual needs and budget. Darpan was loaned the Ultimate AWD grade packing dual 239-kilowatt electric motors and the higher-output 77.4-kilowatt-hour pack, together yielding 320 horsepower, 446 lb-ft of torque and a maximum range of approximately 400 kilometres. EVs have a reputation for being quick, and this pocket-rocket of an IONIQ delivers. As mentioned unlike most SUVs, this smaller crossover handles like a hatchback thanks in part to the stiff underlying E-GMP platform it’s built upon. Parking is no problem as well, and there are many onboard technologies to help with that for example the 360-degree Surround View Monitor. The rear camera could use some kind of a self-cleaning feature, however, as oftentimes the picture was blurry after a rainy drive.

One additional thing to note: the paddles behind the steering wheel aren’t for shifting as the transmission is a single-speed. Pulling on them activates varying levels of regenerative braking, from zero to three, the latter strong enough to enable one-pedalstyle driving. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 starts at MSRP $47,550.

Once behind the steering wheel, buyers are going to be shocked by the range, power, comfort, interior space and advanced technology.”

Jeep Wrangler 4XE

Green and Mean Wrangler

By Benjamin Yong

The EV genie is not getting

back into the bottle at this point, and it’s evident the industry is making a radical shift when even an iconic vehicle like the Jeep Wrangler is buying in. Last year, the brand introduced a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant, and now the latest 2022 model receives a few minor enhancements. “Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created,” says Jeep CEO Christian Meunier in a media release. “We are committed to make Jeep the greenest SUV brand. The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel solely on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in nearly complete silence.” Stylistically, this Wrangler isn’t drastically

different — customers may still choose from 10 different colours and the various types of tops — which personally I think is better than having the vehicle’s signature look altered. There’s Electric Blue accenting on the tow hooks, graphics and badging as well as the interior stitching. Our press loaner featured the optional one-touch fabric Sky Power Top requiring absolutely no unzipping or unbolting to open and close. The interior is pretty much what one would expect, with the exception of additional content on the driver information display and Unconnect touchscreen. For example, Eco Coaching pages show how the regenerative braking is working, gives statistics on efficiency, and allows the scheduling of charging times. The caveat is all the extra data is a bit busy making it hard to see how much battery energy and fuel is remaining.

start-stop operation. Starting up the Wrangler to virtually complete silence is definitely a little strange the first few times. Drivers are able to choose from three different operation settings via E Selec. Hybrid utilizes the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric motors in tandem; Electric runs in zero emissions mode unless the battery is depleted and/or the accelerator is fully engaged; and eSave prioritizes the ICE saving charge for later use. The middle mode is particularly useful for in-city commuting, but rated at 35 kilometres plugging in after almost every trip is necessary. Fortunately, Jeep proves going green and going off-road aren’t mutually exclusive. If anything, it makes hitting the trails even more fun as torque comes on instantly and smoothly helping exercises like rock crawling become more predictable. And depending on the trim, different 4x4 systems are available such as the Rock-Trac that includes a two-speed transfer case with 4:1 low-range gear ratio. Skid plates and front/ rear tow hooks are standard equipment.

For 2022 Silver Zynith Metallic and High Velocity exterior paint is being offered, and buyers can bundle a factory-installed Jeep Performance Parts Corning Gorilla Glass windshield. The new Sunrider Flip Top also joins the array of roofs, combining a soft front section and hard rear.

Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created” Jeep CEO, Christian Meunier

Fuel efficient urban crossover

2022

Lexus UX 250H

By Benjamin Yong

When Lexus teased the

UX (short for urban crossover) Concept way back at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the vehicle represented quite a design evolution from the then-current lineup. The production version manufactured a couple of years later, sold in gasoline and partially electrified form, proved to be a tad tamer, but even now still stands out on the road — particularly in the bright Redline colour Darpan tested. “The Canadian compact luxury SUV segment is booming as drivers look for a vehicle that matches today’s urban lifestyle,” says Robert Tsang, Lexus Canada director, in a news release during the model’s initial launch. “As the segment’s first self-charging hybrid, the UX 250h offers Canadian drivers everything they love

about compact luxury SUV plus incredible performance with standard active safety features and fuel efficiency – at a price that makes it easy to embrace the advantages of Lexus electrification technology.” While the bodylines have been smoothed over a bit, the UX remains quite faithful to the angular styling of the concept. The standard spindle grille adopts a geometric-style, block-shaped asymmetrical mesh pattern creating a truly 3-D aesthetic. The chunky black wheel arches remain — crafted to channel airflow for better aerodynamics — and the rear end features full-length tail lamps comprised of 120 LEDs looking particularly dazzling when illuminated at night. At 4,495 millimetres long and 1,840 millimetres wide, the car-sized crossover fits well in the

cluster, eight-speaker premium stereo, wallet-sized smart key card and a nice chunky heated leather wheel. The hybrid is powered by an ultra-efficient combination 2.0-litre four-cylinder internal combustion engine and two electric motors, sending 181 net horsepower to all four wheels via an electric all-wheel drive system, mated to a continuously variable transmission. Especially during these uncertain economic times where gas prices are at record highs, this fuel-thrifty setup is a welcome one. As mentioned above, the SUV is very car-like and doesn’t feel cumbersome to operate on narrow roads. The Macpherson front/multi-link rear suspension provides a tight handling experience, and it’s also easy to park thanks to the excellent ultrasonic sensors warning when objects are getting too close. A birds-eye 360-degree camera would be a bonus, but not necessary. The 2022 Lexus UX 250h starts at $40,750. Next year, the vehicle receives a refresh increasing rigidity and improving quietness. In addition, there will be a bigger infotainment touchscreen and available active variable suspension as well.
