team comprising ten eleventhand twelfth-grade Princess Margaret Secondary School students has qualified for NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). They are one of the 72 teams globally and the only team from Canada to qualify for this challenge, which involves creating a human-powered rover capable of navigating Moon and Mars-like terrains, accommodating two individuals, and folding into a compact 5" x5" cube for transport to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. Enthusiastic about NASA's initiatives, Jeevan Sandhu, who currently leads the team, and Mehul Bhanot and Omar Arain discovered the challenge just two days before the deadline. With a race against time, they managed to bring more people on the team and submitted a 10-page proposal and a 3D model just minutes before the cut-off, which, to their disbelief, became one of the 72 entries to get selected.

Jeevan credits their innovative use of non-pneumatic tires in the proposal—an idea they picked from the book "Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down"—for their selection. These airless tires are ideal for space travel where traditional pneumatic tires wouldn't function. Having completed the second stage of the challenge, the team has submitted a detailed proposal outlining their rover's design and subsystems to the NASA engineering team, which will review and provide feedback on it. Jag Uppal, who teaches business and computer-related courses at the school, is on the team as the teacher advisor. "Having a teacher advisor was one of the prerequisites for the challenge, so when the team approached me - I immediately said yes as I wanted to give youth a chance and was excited to see what they could accomplish," he shares. Next on their agenda is constructing the rover, which is set to be shipped by mid-April. Soon after, the

1 There has been a recent spate of gun violence during broad daylight in Surrey. With policing being an ongoing issue for Surrey how can residents feel safe during such incidents?

When people call 911, they expect the police to arrive. Currently, the City of Surrey is policed by a mix of RCMP and SPS officers, under the command of the Surrey RCMP. I am confident that the citizens of Surrey will continue to be well served by the combined efforts and work of both police agencies. Over the next year, I expect the transition to move forward with more regular pacing like hiring of more front-line officers, and the reassignment of some RCMP officers to fill key vacancies in the province.

Gun and gang violence impacts us all. We are coordinating with local, provincial and federal police agencies to ensure that we are taking steps to keep people safe, and to put those who engage in gang activity behind bars. We know that the recent events in Surrey are concerning. That’s why we are making sure that multiple police agencies have the tools and resources they need to coordinate their efforts and work on these investigations. We’ve invested $1.6 million into programs to divert young people from gang activity which works with local programs like Surrey WRAP. 2 The latest development in the ongoing police saga has been the suspension of the police board and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has accused you of bullying and misogyny in the past now stating that the BCNDP is trying to force a BCNDP police. How do you respond to that?

This is the City’s police service. The City formally asked to have its policing by means of a municipal police department, the Surrey Police Service (SPS), in 2018. The SPS was established in 2020 and has been in the process of being built since this time. There is no question that it’s time for the City to stop wasting tax payer dollars and move forward together to complete this transition. Any delays and increased costs are being caused by the City of Surrey. I look forward to this transition being complete and welcome members back to the Surrey Police Board. My hope is that there are productive conversations that lead to an agreement of the funding levels for the SPS.

7 The BC government introduced a bill banning the use of illicit drugs in many public places. Where would this bill ban the consumption of illicit drugs?

Public Safety has been an ongoing topic in the news with the recent spate of gun violence South of the Fraser. In Darpan's 10, Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General for BC, The Honourable Mike Farnworth sheds light on crime, Surrey RCMP vs SPS saga, and the future of policing in Surrey.

3 In which area does the City of Surrey need

to act now?

The City has an obligation to provide its policing by means of the SPS, which requires them to work with the SPS, the RCMP and the federal and provincial governments to complete this transition. Surrey is a key partner in this transition, and their leadership is essential. This includes finalizing a police budget, signing legal agreements and working with all partners to finalize the transition plans. The City should also accept the $150M that the Province has offered for the transition. They haven’t accepted this funding, and it will be Surrey taxpayers who will pay the price for the Mayor’s games. 4 The public feels that the Surrey Police vs the Surrey RCMP back and forth has gone on too long. What will it take to put the focus back on public safety and not on political football?

I agree, this transition has gone on too long. It is disappointing that only the City of Surrey is dragging this transition out as long as possible for political games. We have been clear- provide a plan that is safe or continue the transition to the SPS. The City failed in providing a safe plan and now the City of Surrey is

6 What is the future of policing looking like for Surrey in the upcoming new year? How can Surrey residents feel reassured they will be served by the police in a timely fashion?

required to complete the transition to the SPS by law. I will not let one community make a decision that impacts the safety of people in another community. Public safety has been and continues to be the core driving principle that guides any matter related to policing. 5 Mayor Locke says Surrey residents could be looking at a 20% tax increase if the transition to the SPS continues. However, you are questioning these figures. With the matter now before the courts and the delays what kind of bill are the Surrey taxpayers on the hook for?

It is extremely disappointing that the City of Surrey has decided to spend significant taxpayer dollars on lawyers, consultants and public ad campaigns rather than invest in public safety in the community. The Mayor is trying to delay the transition which will only increase the costs for the people of Surrey. These delays are costing people more than $8 million dollars a month. We committed to providing $150 million to assist in completing the transition to the SPS, mitigating impacts to Surrey taxpayers. This offer of support is still on the table.

Under the Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act, drug use is not allowed at parks, beaches, sports fields, and outdoor community recreation areas as well as within 6-metres of a public transit bus stop and within 6-metres of an entrance to a business, workplace or a residential building that is next to a public space, like a sidewalk. The legislation explicitly prohibits drug use within 15-metres of playgrounds, spray and wading pools and skate parks. 8 Have there been consultations with Dr. Bonnie Henry and Coroner Lisa LaPointe in ending open drug use in open public spaces?

We have engaged widely with many stakeholders including First Nations, Métis and Indigenous partners, service providers supporting people who use drugs, local governments, police leadership and public health. 9 BC has filed the first-ever application to secure an unexplained wealth order in Canada. Do you feel had you used this approach prior to the money laundering investigation it would have gone differently?

We brought in unexplained wealth orders (UWO), a court order that requires a person to explain how they acquired their assets based off of the recommendations from the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia. We called that commission as a Government, and we are working through each one of those recommendations to stop BC from being a place where criminals can launder money. These orders will require people to explain how they acquired their assets if there is suspicion of unlawful activity. 10 What's a message you would like to share with the South Asian community?

We have so much to be proud of as a vibrant province and we have so much more work to do to tackle the challenges that we face. I am wishing your families joy, peace, prosperity, and new beginnings in the coming year. Happy New Year to our vibrant South Asian community in BC. May 2024 be filled with happiness and success!

ainth's tryst with Bhangra began at the tender age of three, a love ignited by the rhythm that resonated with his soul. Life brought him to Canada in 1997, where he continued to dance with local clubs. However, family challenges and his father's illness in India pushed Kainth into a relentless cycle of work, juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. His hiatus from Bhangra was brief as a family friend asked Kainth to teach her kids a Bhangra routine for a family event. This was just enough to reignite the flame. What started with a twostudent class in a parking lot soon burgeoned to 100, forcing Kainth to seek a bigger space. The birth of BC Cultural in 2003 marked the realization of a dream – an academy that would not just teach Bhangra, but weave a tapestry of Punjabi culture in the fabric of Canada. With minimal resources, he shaped BC Cultural into a thriving academy. “We competed in 171 competitions and we have 171 trophies.”, shares Kainth. Additionally, BC Cultural raised funds for Surrey Memorial Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and left an indelible mark on events like the Winter Olympics in 2010.

Amidst the whirlwind of establishing BC Cultural, life threw another challenge at Kainth – single parenthood, a responsibility that Kainth embraced wholeheartedly, going as far as attending parenting seminars to equip himself with the tools needed to nurture and support his children, Jada and Subegh. However, life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when Kainth faced a health crisis. Diagnosed with cancer, Kainth stood at the precipice of a daunting journey. The prospect of an exten ear, all looming as formidable obstacles on this arduous path. In the shadows of despair, Kainth faced a darkness that threatened to engulf him. Suicidal thoughts loomed, casting a pall over his existence, and he became a mere spectator in the passage of months that melted into over five years. Yet, in the face of adversity, the believer of Baba Deep Singh Ji refused to give up. Moreover, the community responded with an outpouring of support, encapsulated in the #GiveKainthLife campaign that became a lifeline for his dreams. "All my students are like my kids." Kainth emphasizes, his words laden with gratitude. Unraveling Intergenerational Trauma Intergenerational trauma, an unspoken yet formidable force, weaves its somber threads into the very fabric of our communities, etching an enduring imprint on the collective psyche. This deeply ingrained issue, frequently overlooked and relegated to the shadows, maintains its grip on families and individuals across successive generations. The profound significance of intergenerational trauma, the mechanisms through which it is passed down, and its far-reaching effects on mental well-being, familial relationships, and community identity are undeniably prevalent. As such, understanding intergenerational trauma is of the utmost importance to truly heal and reach one’s highest potential. Intergenerational trauma is when traumatic experiences are transferred from parents to children through biological changes in the body or learnt behaviors. Trauma is the emotional response caused by a singular or series of distressing events that are outside one’s ability to cope. These traumatic roots run deep, with events like colonization and the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan leaving profound scars within our community. The trauma of these events persists, influencing how communities perceive themselves. A practicing psychiatrist, bestselling author, and Clinical Associate Professor at The University of British Columbia, Dr. Shimi Kang shares, “My dad is 90 years old and was 14 years old during the Partition. He witnessed his best friend being murdered. Throughout his adult years, my father suffered mood issues, likely untreated PTSD. I know my own serious health issues have been impacted by intergenerational trauma. My underlying medical issue comes from an inherited/genetic disorder

of low collagen production, causing joint issues, early cataracts, spinal cysts, and chronic pain. Thankfully, I now have awareness of the impact of intergenerational trauma and the knowledge to seek sophisticated medical treatments along with traditional Punjabi/South Asian medicines, such as turmeric, yoga, and meditation/kirtan, to help me function. I cannot imagine what would have happened to me

We know adrenaline triggers survival instincts like freeze (e.g., anxiety), fight (e.g., anger), and flight (e.g., distraction/addiction), explaining the increased rates of mental health issues, violence, and addiction among all those affected by intergenerational trauma. Cortisol accumulates in collagen-rich areas of the body, including tissues, muscles, and fat stores, explaining the increased rates of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer among all those affected by intergenerational trauma. In such cases, culturally rich meditation, art, and movement prove therapeutic and offer solace. Though post-colonial communities face added risks, such as post-migration first-generation challenges, including alcoholism, loss of identity/career, family isolation, mental illness, and domestic violence, that contribute to cortisol-related conditions, recovery is not just conceivable but imperative. Undoubtedly, the stories of elders contain a recollection of harrowing experiences during the Partition, of leaving their homes and watching their lives change forever. Hardyal Singh Sandhu was born two years after partition and is part of the Baby Boomer generation; he mentions how the hopes of his elders from India were shattered as their homes remained on the other side. Having recently journeyed to Pakistan to reestablish connections with his ancestral village, he not only rediscovered his family home but also had the opportunity to hear first-hand stories from the current residents. The pain is still palpable as Sandhu mourns unrecoverable financial losses and inescapable societal mistreatment, coupled with a lack of governmental assistance. At a time where basic resources like hospitals for the wounded were a far-fetched notion, the idea of trauma therapy would have been unheard of. Jas Hundal, a Registered Social Worker and the Clinical Director of Counseling at Future Ready Minds, highlights, “Many clients that I worked

with over the years have often spoken about the Partition, reasons behind their immigration story, and also facing racism upon arriving in Canada. Since their parents or grandparents witnessed or directly experienced traumatic events, many clients have voiced that they also suffer from mental health issues, but have been taught to internalize their feelings. When parents are disconnected from their children due to the unresolved trauma, children can face the adverse impacts of the trauma.” Sandhu remembers that for his father, life was primarily about survival, given how much they had lost during the Partition; his family worked hard to rebuild from the ground up. Thus, school was not the central focus for the children of the family as mere survival in the face of adversity took precedence over formal education. That said, despite the hardships, Sandhu’s family did support his educational aspirations and he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first young man from his village to attain a Master's degree. Sandhu, who initially served as an Excise and Taxation Commissioner for the Punjab government, later retired as a teacher at a private school in Canada. Sandhu elaborates, “When I was growing up, education was regarded as an extra luxury rather than a necessity. However, as time has evolved, this landscape has shifted, and education has taken on an entirely new level of importance for today's parents.” This shift in emphasis on education represents a key facet of how intergenerational trauma can lead to varying value systems and beliefs across generations. Each generation’s priorities and aspirations may differ significantly, reflecting the enduring impact of their own experiences. Talia Ahmad, a younger Millennial voice, offers a glimpse into her personal experiences amidst the backdrop of intergenerational trauma and the subtle yet profound influence of gender roles. Her mother, who had weathered her own traumatic past, was unwavering in her determination to shield her daughter from a similar fate. Despite her having the freedom to

A renowned Sikh historian, independent researcher, and antiquarian, Bance's journey into the realms of Sikh history is as unconventional as it is compelling. Born into a family that moved to Britain in the 1930s, Bance's initial foray into the world of academia saw him as a marketing student rather than a history scholar. However, fate had a different path laid out for him. It was during a visit to Thetford that the seeds of curiosity were sown as he stumbled upon the samadhi of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last sovereign ruler of the Sikh Empire. Intrigued by this chance encounter, Bance initiated a quest to unravel the lesser-known aspects of Duleep Singh's life, particularly focusing on his descendants. This quest became the catalyst for the creation of a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia associated with the Maharajah and his family. Bance’s newfound passion prompted him to place advertisements in local papers, seeking information about Maharajah Duleep Singh's children. The response was

overwhelming – 400 replies flooded in, unveiling a treasure trove of artifacts and personal stories. Balancing Acts The Impact of Work Hour Restrictions on International Students In the dynamic landscape of international education, the repercussions of government policies on work hours for international students are both intricate and far-reaching. A recent 2023 pilot program in Canada had temporarily lifted the 20-hour per week cap on offcampus work for international students. This decision was motivated by the challenges faced by employers in retaining workers and addressing labor shortages. The announcement followed years of advocacy by international students urging the government to eliminate the work cap. However, concerns have emerged regarding the reinstatement of the work hour cap for 2024 and beyond, and its potential impact on students' financial stability and overall well-being. The Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulation stipulates that international students holding a study permit without a work permit are limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week off-campus during the academic session, while they are permitted to work full-time during breaks between sessions. On-campus work has no hourly restrictions. Violation of this work cap, as outlined by the Government of Canada, may result in severe consequences, including the loss of student status, denial of approval for future study or work permits, or even deportation.

He highlights the financial strain, stating that working parttime barely covered rent and groceries. Budhiraja also raises concerns about the potential impact on the local community, sharing, "We hear a lot of stories where international students are not getting jobs for months." Regarding concerns about living expenses and contributions to the local workforce, Budhiraja points out that the 20-hour limit is a hurdle for many students. Earlier this year, there were an unprecedented 1.9 million visits to food banks in Canada. This is a 32% increase from 2022 and a 78% increase since before the pandemic. Unsurprisingly, food banks are approaching 2024 with growing concerns as the sustained increase in demand places additional strain on their resources and capacities. One of the primary reasons behind the increasing dependence on food banks can be attributed to the financial challenges people face in affording healthy food. The escalating costs of living, including housing and food, have outpaced the growth in average incomes. The consequence is that an alarming number of people are unable to access or afford the food necessary for maintaining their well-being. Dan Huang-Taylor, Executive Director of Food Banks BC acknowledges the predicament organizations are facing, “There is a significant strain on food banks. Along with increased demand, we are also seeing major drops in donations, both food and monetary, of approximately 30% across the province.” While the need for their services continues to grow, the generosity of donors has seen a decline, mirroring the economic pressures affecting everyone. This situation places food banks in the challenging position of striving to do more with fewer resources. Mahmood Zafar, Interim Executive Director at Surrey Food Bank details, “As the cost of living keeps climbing, more people are relying on us for help. However, at the same time, the generosity from donors is shrinking because everyone is feeling the pinch. So, we're stuck in this tricky spot, trying to do more with less. With our client list growing, we're ramping up our efforts to find and distribute more food. We're also upgrading our capacity to handle the food, making sure it stays in top shape. To make all of this happen, we’re working on some new and innovative approaches to generate funds. It's a challenging puzzle, but we're determined to crack it!” Needless to say, the general public plays a pivotal role in supporting food banks during these challenging times. Spreading awareness is the first step; by informing friends and family about the vital role food banks play, individuals can create a ripple effect of support that can transform into a wave of assistance. Darpan engaged in a conversation with Vinayak Lohani, who boldly eschewed a traditional career trajectory to become a symbol of hope for India’s vulnerable children.

n a world where few dare to forsake a lucrative career and dedicate their lives to the welfare of others, Vinayak Lohani, an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, chose a path that defied conventional. Inspired by the profound ideals of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna, Lohani, turned away from tempting opportunities and founded his non-profit organization Parivaar in 2003. Starting with just three children in a modest rented apartment in West Bengal, Parivaar has evolved into a beacon of hope for numerous children, who are highly vulnerable to exploitation, victimization, and trafficking, including orphans, street children, abandoned children, and extremely impoverished children from tribal areas. Beyond this, the organization conducts various humanitar-

ian activities for the destitute, including the elderly and those without shelter. When asked about the defining moment that led to his shift from a potential corporate career to dedicating himself to humanitarian service, Lohani responds with a smile, “There wasn’t any one moment as such.” Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “After finishing my schooling in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, I pursued B.Tech at Kharagpur. Following that, a year at Infosys in Bangalore preceded my journey to IIM Kolkata. My journey was primarily driven by academic success and challenges. In those days it wasn’t easy to get admission in IIM, so it was more like an academic achievement for me, but I didn’t have a clear career plan then. The allure of a corporate career waned quickly. Although I admired entrepreneurship, it wasn't my pursuit. My heart was always drawn to the humanitarian service sector.”

During his time at IIM, Lohani initiated a successful volunteer group, engaging in activities such as visiting village schools and organizing health camps. This experience reinforced his belief that people are willing to serve and make an impact if given the opportunity, propelling him further into the realm of humanitarian service. “So, I didn’t participate in the placement process at the end of my course, as my interest had shifted away from academics. Instead, I began visiting various organizations in and outside Kolkata. This exploration phase helped me understand the vast needs in the social sector, which isn’t competitive like the commercial entrepreneurial space. I realized that one doesn’t need a disruptive idea to make a difference, just the willingness to serve where there is a need. I had no grand idea; I was just driven by the desire to do something for the society. It was just the spirit of service. So, I started on a small scale with street children, children from red light areas, and other individual cases of crisis. It could be an orphaned child or single

mother who is living in very difficult circumstances. That is how Parivaar was started in West Bengal,” explain Lohani. Over the past two decades, Parivaar has metamorphosed the lives of thousands of children. In West Bengal, the organization boasts two residential institutions, accommodating around

2000 children from extremely vulnerable backgrounds. These institutions stand as the largest free residential establishments for such children in the state. In 2016, after 14 years of unwavering service in Bengal, Lohani expanded Parivaar’s reach to Madhya Pradesh. The Seva Kutirs in MP have since provided quality supplementary education and nutritious meals to over 50,000 children from impoverished Adivasi families across 15 districts. Additionally, the organization operates four residential institutions, housing approximately 1250 children from poor Adivasi families in three districts, with plans for annual scaling. Parivaar’s impact extends beyond education. Operating 97 ambulances in tribal areas across 24 districts, the organization has served more than 2.25 lakh cases in the last 30 months. Its Vision Restoration project has benefited over 5.17 lakh individuals through general examinations, medicines, and glasses, fully restoring the vision of more than 57 thousand people. Furthermore, Parivaar runs 13 Daily Mobile Health Clinics in remote and impoverished areas across seven districts, providing free medicines to over 10 lakh individuals in the last 30 months. Under Vinayak Lohani's vision-

ary leadership, the organization thrives today. Despite its remarkable growth, Lohani humbly acknowledges, “The scaling of the organization was determined by the resources and people who joined us. Growth cannot be precisely defined, as opportunities present themselves unpredictably. Our organization has evolved to meet various needs over the years, and our growth contours are loosely defined. At the start, I wasn’t sure how many children we could manage, or when we could purchase our own land even. But with commitment and long-term dedication, these interim goals became less important. The key is not to focus solely on goal-based motivation but to embrace mission-based motivation. It’s more about the journey than fixed goalposts. While goals are important for self-evaluation and organizational efficiency, they shouldn’t be the only driving factor. If things don’t happen as planned or at the expected pace, frustration can creep in. Hence, a deeper level of motivation, beyond just goals or achievements, is necessary.” True, the task at hand is not easy, so what keeps him motivated on day-to-day basis?

Challenges are part of every job, and everyone experiences stress at their workplace. In today’s fastpaced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the race and feel like you’re slipping. But these challenges shouldn’t deter you from your path. The line I chose was different, given my background, and the only chal-

lenges were to stay on this path. I never doubted the merit of this path, though I sometimes doubted my worthiness to be on it. I never regretted my choice,” reveals Lohani. inayak Lohani's dedication has earned him recognition through several awards, including the National Award for Child Welfare 2011 presented by the President of India and the Sanskriti Award 2011 from former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. However, Lohani

holds a unique perspective on awards and recognition, stating, “While it’s a common belief that awards or recognition can be beneficial, they don’t significantly impact an organization’s success. If an organization is fulfilling its promises to its stakeholders, donors, and beneficiaries, then external recognition doesn’t matter. Even a Nobel Peace Prize doesn’t necessarily impact an organization’s operations. There are many unrecognized, inspiring forces in our society, whose work is not defined by the awards or recognition they received. We need to decouple the idea of success from recognition. Success shouldn’t be based on recognition or validation from others. This mindset is prevalent in our aspirational social classes, which place a premium on success based on recognition. This attitude needs to be guarded against, especially in our sector. I feel even celebrity engagement can sometimes be problematic. If a high-networth individual is on an organization’s governing body, ordinary donors might think the organization already has ample support. While recognition and celebrity engagement might help to some extent,

they’re not crucial.” Indeed, starting from almost nothing, presently, Parivaar's initiatives stand as India's largest endeavours of their kind, addressing the needs of over 50 thousand underprivileged children and serving hundreds of thousands of impoverished tribal individuals through diverse health initiatives. In the fiscal year 2022-23, Parivaar allocated approximately Rs 76 Cr towards its various projects, boasting a dedicated workforce of 3800 individuals referred to as Sevavratees. Looking ahead to 2024, Parivaar's roadmap includes plan to establish new residential campuses in select districts in Madhya Pradesh and introduce about 200 Seva Kutirs in Alirajpur (with the lowest literacy rate in the country) and Barwani. Additionally, the organization aims to set up Mobile Clinics in two tribal districts of Chhattisgarh and initiate Seva Kutirs in Purba Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Community in Crisis/// In the heart of Surrey's bustling business district, a sense of unease has settled following a series of alarming incidents that have gripped the community. The seemingly business-as-usual surroundings of the Payal Business Centre, home to a myriad of South Asian businesses, have been marred by a recent surge in criminal activities, raising concerns among residents and entrepreneurs alike. The unsettling chain of events began with an armed robbery on November 22, 2023, at a business in the 8100 block of 128 Street within the Payal Business Centre. The Surrey RCMP swiftly responded to the incident, reporting that one person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital. The suspects, making a hasty getaway in a dark-colored pickup truck, managed to evade capture. Just as the community grappled with the aftermath of the brazen daylight robbery, another blow struck the following day. In the early morning hours of November 23, 2023, shots rang out, targeting a business in the same plaza. The business, later revealed to be RK Jewellers, bore the evidence of a shooting, with bullet holes in its windows. Fortunately, the store was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported. Recent reports reveal targeted attacks and shootings, prompting individuals, including notable figures, to express feelings of vulnerability. Some have taken drastic measures, such as relocating to different countries, potentially in an effort to ensure personal safety. This unsettling trend raises broader questions about the overall security landscape and the impact on individuals who find themselves thrust into the spotlight. In example, a harrowing incident entails gunshots being fired near Gippy Grewal’s home, shortly after which notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi claimed responsibility. The Surrey RCMP, facing a sudden surge in criminal activities within a tight-knit community, has been working tirelessly to unravel the complexities surrounding these incidents. According to the RCMP, the incidents at Payal Business Centre are being treated as isolated events and are not believed to be part of a larger trend. The investigators are diligently examining each case independently, looking for any potential connections to other crimes that might have been committed. The Surrey RCMP assures the public that such acts of violence are relatively rare when considering the broader context of Surrey's public safety, shedding light on the reduction

in overall crime rates in Surrey over the last decade. Surrey RCMP officers respond to approximately 200,000 calls for service every year and only a very small fraction of those involve a violent act in a public space, but these are usually the investigations that make the news headlines. It is important to keep these isolated acts of violence within the context of the overall public safety picture in Surrey. Officer in Charge of Surrey RCMP Detachment, Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards shares, “We have seen a reduction in crime in Surrey over the last decade. The Surrey RACMP discloses three validated reports of extortions in Surrey, spanning from October to November 2023. The key component of these reports is that similar fact evidence exists. These extortions are happening in a remarkably similar way, indicating that one offender or group of offenders is conducting these extortions. The same fact pattern exists throughout the region in West Vancouver, White Rock, and Abbotsford and police are satisfied the same offenders are involved. There are extortions occurring in other jurisdictions of the country as well in Edmonton, Alberta and Brampton, Ontario. Again, the fact patterns are remarkably similar. According to the Surrey RCMP, there are rumors circulating that some people have paid the extortionists and not contacted the police. However, the police cannot act on rumors. The rumors need to be validated because invalidated rumors create fear. As such, the Surrey RCMP urges the community to share the message and encourage people to call the police, even if it is not specific to Surrey, as it may assist another police agency. Such is the appeal of semi-permanent make up which emerged decades ago starting with tattoo eyeliner. Since then we’ve seen microblading for brows and the fine-tuning of eyeliner options thanks to innovations in technology and improved inks. Powder ombre brows and lip blush are two recent treatments that give women more opportunities to streamline their beauty regimen without having invasive medical procedures. Unlike microblading where a manual tool draws lines of colour to mimic the look hair, powder ombre is done using a

machine creating a filled-in, soft powdery look. “They’re little pixilated dots of colour,” says Melissa Chang, owner/ educator at Vancouver’s Brow Beauty Lab (www.browbeautylab.com). Choosing one technique over the other comes down to what look the client wants to achieve—some people don’t like a filled-in look— how full or sparse the natural brow hair is and the level of oiliness of the skin.

“If you have oilier skin it means, regardless of which technique you choose, it’s going to fade quicker.,” Chang explains “For microblading if you have oilier skin, it’s going to fade faster. Those nice, crisp lines that we draw, they don’t always heal that way on oilier skin. They tend to blend together, and they get really soft looking. You can still do it but the effect is not as nice.”

If you have no brow hair, you generally want to stick with the powder ombre technique because for those with sparse hair, the lines drawn with microblading will show the skin in between. The ombre powder technique fills in the brow area creating a more natural look. The other advantage of the powder ombre brow is that it can last up to two years in contrast to the one year for microblading. Chang says the most natural and long lasting brow treatment is the combo—which is exactly what the name suggests— combining microblading and powder ombre. An appointment typically lasts two and a half hours which begins with the client’s face being measured. Then the shape is drawn out according to the face measurements. Once the shape is approved by the client, the brow hair is cleaned up and then a numbing cream is applied to the area before the procedure starts.

The most recent brow treatment is nano brows, Chang notes, which is very similar to the micro-bladed effect, but it’s done with a machine rather than a manual tool. “It’s a really fine needle but it’s using a machine. So, for clients who have a mature skin, microblading doesn’t always work for them but nano might be a good alternative for them.” A key piece of advice, regardless of what service you opt for, is don’t shave off your brows. Chang says that they get asked that a lot by clients. “No don’t shave off your brows. We’ll groom them and make them look nice,” she says.

The lip blush treatment is what the name suggests, a flush of natural-looking colour that also gives the appearance of fuller lips. “It can be as simple as wanting to change the colour or cover up any scars, or just wanting to achieve the appearance of a fuller lip without hyaluronic injections,” says Ashley Wong, owner of Luxe Lip Studio in New Westminster, for why people would opt for a lip blush treatment (www.luxelipstudio.com) For others, it’s about correcting an obvious uneven skin tone. Wong calls it lip neutralization. It’s the same process as creating the blush colour, but different pigments are used. “If someone has melanin on their lips, then we would use colours that are the opposite to neutralize any dark tones… on their lips, giving them more of a warm appearance.” she adds that lip colour can change from sun damage or just melanin on their skin. Chang, whose studio also does lip blush, says age too can affect lip colour—either causing fading or darker spots.

“Lip Blush is similar to the powder ombre brows in that we use the same machine,” Chang says. “The process is the same. We’re going to draw the shape around your lips. We don’t overdraw. So we do have to work within your natural lips but there’s a little bit of leeway.” Wong says for the majority of people the treatment isn’t painful and that numbing cream is applied at the beginning and throughout the procedure. “I’ve even had clients doze off during the treatment.” she says.

The healing process, Wong says, is just some swelling for 24 hours with some minor scabbing for about a week. She advises that you must avoid working out, swimming, using a sauna or tanning. Lips need to be kept hydrated and suggest using Aquaphor ointment. “After scabbing the colour will start to stabilize and bloom after four to five weeks. Then around six to eight weeks is when you come back for a touch up.” she says, adding that a touch up is important because everyone heals and takes the pigment differently. If you want your lips to be a lot more full, this is not the same as lip injections, Chang notes, but that it will give you “a more youthful appearance because your lips are going to be all one colour, and as a result they will look more full. You can make them slightly more symmetrical. So in that way it will look more full but not like injections where you can really change the volume of your lips.”

Vents are integrated into the fixed headrests, dubbed the AIRSCARF system, circulating warm air around the head and neck area when the roof is down making fall and/or nighttime cruising even more enjoyable. Surprisingly what’s missing is some sort of a wind blocker behind the rear seats to quiet things down and keep hair from whipping around on the freeway. A burly hand-crafted 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine propels the car, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque capable of achieving a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.6 seconds. The sound emitted out of the quad trapezoidal tailpipes is simply intoxicating making the fuel consumption of 21.4 L/100 km I experienced over a week of city driving (almost) worth it. Sitting on AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL, the suspension features hydraulic anti-roll bars that automatically compensate for body roll in turns keeping the SL level during high-speed turns. The ride is on the stiffer side and is a bit noisy while going over bumps and uneven bits of pavement. The composite brake discs are lighter and boast shorter stopping distances than before but are also quite squealy at times. Variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard as is active rear-axle steering, the latter improving agility, steering effort and turning radius allowing the long vehicle to easily manoeuvre around the city.

2024 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X RUGGED MID-SIZE PICKUP

Launched as an all-new redesign for 2022, the Nissan Frontier is in a carry-over year and particularly in PRO-4X form remains a great choice for both work and play. Though the full-length, fully-boxed frame is essentially unchanged from 2005, it’s a solid and proven base to build upon and almost everything else around it is fresh. Somewhat resembling a baby Titan, the mid-size pickup’s nose is similarly dominated by a massive grille and blocky headlights housing distinctive LED signature lighting. The entire vehicle boasts an upright stance lending a powerful appearance, and adding to the effect are athletic fenders and matching notched taillights.

PRO-4X models get a bunch of bonus functional and cool accessories such as silver skid plates protecting the engine, oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank; wheel arch flares; 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires; and Lava Red emblem and tow hooks, among others. Hiding underneath the body work is an electronic locking differential and Bilstein offroad shock absorbers. Measuring over six-feet tall, it’s a good idea to double-check height restrictions before entering certain parking garages.

Darpan reviewed the Crew Cab variant packing full-size doors and a five-foot bed, and while not as sporty looking as the King Cab the proper second-row bench makes fitting a child seat much easier than using the flip-down cushions found in the latter. Our media vehicle was coated in desert-racing-ready Baja Glass paint that contrasted nicely against the black and red exterior details, rear privacy glass and available TM factory-sprayed bedliner. Stepping inside the cabin occupants will notice premium upholstery and additional lava red accenting in the stitching, around the instrument cluster gauge rings and various trim pieces. Some welcome touches include the faux-leatherwrapped centre console, leather steering wheel, manual sliding rear window accessible from the driver’s seat and big nine-inch colour touchscreen display. The NissanConnect infotainment isn’t the best in the industry but is certainly better than many other examples out there, offering a good mixture of virtual and physical controls as well as integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Another useful digital feature is the excellent Around View Monitor 360-degree camera. The first automaker to showcase such technology back in 2007, it’s now upgraded and highlights moving objects on screen, self-activating at low speeds when the two-speed electronic transfer case is set to 4-LO so as to help avoid scratches and dents on the trail. Under the Frontier’s hood is a 3.8-litre V6 mill, producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, originally introduced in the 2020 version of the truck. The motor feels a bit clunky but performance is quite good whether commuting about town or off the beaten path, and the ride is fairly quiet thanks to the installation of extra insulation, improved rear carpeting and acoustic laminated glass in the front doors. A new nine-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing five-speed unit.

2024 Volvo V90 CC LUXURY SCANDINAVIAN WAGON

European auto manufacturers are almost singlehandedly keeping the station wagon dream alive here in the west, and the Volvo V90 Cross Country is among the best currently offered. The vehicle returns for the 2024 model year virtually unchanged since the last refresh three years ago.

Despite a 60-millimeter taller ride height and black cladding applied under the bumpers, side sills and over the fender arches, our Ultimatetrim press loaner still looked as sleek as ever thanks to a low greenhouse, curvy body and streamlined vertical-slatted grille. The silver front skidplate, optional 21-inch 7-Open Spoke Diamond-cut wheels (+ $1,475) and Thor’s Hammer T-shaped signature daytime running lights provided icing on the cake.

Is it even possible for Volvo to make a bad interior? The Nappa leather upholstery is buttery soft and the beautiful hits of natural open-pore wood around the space feel great to the touch. And though I’ve previously seen the Swedish Orrefors crystal gear shifter many times, the piece is still a stunner.

Some other highlights are the intricate brushed alloy speaker covers, two-tone heated leather steering wheel, big panoramic sunroof and polished knurled dials and knobs. Legroom is plentiful in both the first and second rows, and a child seat is easily accommodated. The 714 litres of space in the cargo area was enough to fit several pieces of check-in and carry-on luggage, and folding the back bench expands the total storage capacity to 1,526 litres.

Hitting the scene in 2020, the Polestar 2 (P2) produced by Volvo’s performance subsidiary Polestar is one of the more recent EV players on the market. Now three years in, the five-door — based on the same Compact Modular Architecture platform as the XC40 Recharge — continues to offer a viable alternative to competitors such as the Tesla Model 3. While a familiar overall Swedish design aesthetic exists, the vehicle, which serves as a pure electric follow-up to the 619 horsepower Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid sports coupe, really stands out amongst other zero-emissions brethren. From the stealthy badging and Knight Rider-like animated LED taillight strip on the outside to the barely-there physical controls and hollow shifter on the inside, it’s definitely something unique.

Similarly, the interior possesses a clean appearance devoid of extraneous trim elements and buttons. Even a start button is missing, because simply sitting in the seat with the fob nearby and stepping on the brake pedal activates the car. The only downside to this is an accessory mode is effectively missing. In addition, the gear knob doesn’t have a selector button either and an accidental tap can put the position to neutral by accident while in operation. A 12.3-inch floating Google-based infotainment display serves as the command centre, and the vegan upholstery throughout looks pleasant and feels nice. Ash wood and leather seats are optional. New for 2023 is Apple CarPlay support. Claims of the raw acceleration of battery-powered vehicles are not exaggerated, particularly here where there is a pair of high output electric motors generating a combined 487 lb-ft of instant-on torque. One is installed at both the front and rear axles creating all-wheel drive, meaning traction was never compromised as I blasted along a rain-soaked backcountry corridor after giving a quick jab of the throttle. A Performance Pack software upgrade is available for speed junkies upping the horsepower from 408 to 476 and torque to 502 lb-ft. Range anxiety sufferers rejoice: a large 78 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery yields a travel distance of over 400 kilometres. Taking the car out for an afternoon, I barely made a dent in the power level largely due to the common EV one-pedal drive function. Turning it on results in automatic braking anytime your foot is lifted off the accelerator pedal, and the resulting created kinetic energy is captured and used to recharge the battery.

During my late teens, this idea was first shared by my father Ravindar Singh Somi’s friend, Eric, who lived on the Vancouver Island. Importantly, this is one of the few places on our blue planet that offers the scenic views of the majestic mountains as well as the serene Pacific Ocean, while also allowing newcomers to maintain their culture while adding to the country’s tapestry of multi-culturalism.

For the first few weeks, we stayed with some family members – and then moved into our own house.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

We arrived in Canada in the summer of 2006, when our son was 18 months old.

Like all immigrants, the foremost challenge was to find a job in my field. As I was coming from a very prestigious role in London, UK and earlier in the India’s capital city working with the stalwarts of our nation, it took some time getting accustomed to dynamics of this city – especially as Vancouver was not a knowledge-based economy at that time, and vacancies in post-secondary institutions were few and far between.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

How long did it take to get used to the people, weather, or the surrounding?

Which year did you migrate?

When I first arrived in Vancouver in 1999, I was invited to be a part of a program at the University British Columbia; it was then that I decided to settle in the land where the ocean meets the mountains. Along with the welcoming members of the Indigenous community I met, the streets of UBC were breathtakingly beautiful at that time of the year – lined with Cherry blossoms all around. My first impression of this land was that it is filled with natural beauty, and with beautiful and kind people.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?

As we were arriving from London in the United Kingdom, we really liked the weather and the people! The surroundings were beautiful, inviting and less crowded – all pluses. Our commute to enjoy a savoury samosa used to be a good two hours from our Central London home to Southall – and in Surrey, it was reduced to less than 15 minutes – and who could complaint about that?

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

We all know that securing a job is one of the biggest challenges all immigrants face, and it was no different for us. Even though my recent educa-

tion and experience were from United Kingdom, it took some time to find a foothold in the labour market. Fortunately, I got a break as the Editor in Lower Mainland’s leading South-Asian lifestyle magazine and the rest, as they say, is history.

Where were you working before moving to Canada? As what? Before moving to Canada, I was a researcher at Control Risks, a global specialist risk consultancy that provides the insight and intelligence to multinational organizations.

What do you like most about this country? Like – one of the most beautiful, serene, ethical and giving nations.

How do you see your future in Canada I see a bright future ahead for myself while playing a leadership role serving the larger community.

How has your overall journey in Canada been so far My overall journey has been very pleasant and rewarding; it is a very giving country that values its citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: It was to engage with knowledge-based professions, as compared to a city like London, England.

Advice for immigrants:

Make sure to learn about the country before making the big move! Canada is a very giving land filled with generous and thoughtful people.
