ello readers, Darpan brings to you yet another interesting and informative issue. The warm season still continues; and our issue filled with short and light articles makes for the perfect summer read. Right from articles like the musthave travel products and aqua fitness, to B.C.’s top water destinations and lawn grooming tips, this issue celebrates the beautiful season of warmth and sunshine. On the cover is the intelligent and well-known Ajay Bhatt, co-inventor of the USB. The success of his creation is such that the device is currently used in almost every computer in the world. The Indian-American computer architect and Intel Fellow shares with Darpan his success story and gives us an insight on the latest generation of the USB that hit the market two months ago. The highlight of this issue is the feature on crime in Surrey and surrounding areas. With no less than 30 reported shootings since the beginning of March, the article examines the cause of increasing crime rate in Surrey and questions higher authorities on the measures taken to reduce or end it. Spokespersons from the police, government, educational system and law share their views on this matter, suggesting what can or could be done to put an end to criminal activities and gang wars. Moving towards lighter topics, our tech feature on ‘Smarten Your Home’ sheds light on a few gadgets and apps that can secure, monitor or control your home at just the click of a button. Is the summer heat unbearable? Head to the beach for a refreshing swim, or a water park for some fun time with family and friends. The activities feature on B.C.’s waterfront destinations suggests some of the popular water spots around the Lower Mainland and beyond. Darpan teams thanks its readers and well-wishers for their continuous support. Please send your feedback, comments, suggestions and thoughts to editor@darpanmagazine.com or leave a message on our social media sites.

I loved reading the interview on Akshay Kumar. I totally love watching his films, especially his comic roles. He is truly a hard-working actor and one that believes in working with everybody in the industry – be it someone who is very successful in the industry or a newcomer. Hope to see the khiladi on the big screen soon. - Baljit Gill, Surrey

Auto Reviews I am a big fan of cars, and I eagerly wait to read the auto reviews in each issue of Darpan. It’s interesting to read about the latest cars and their features. I really liked reading the auto review on Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk – the car has style and some great features. Thank you for the reviews. Awaiting the next issue of Darpan. – Rohan Thakur, Vancouver
Re: Auto Reviews Hey Rohan, it is great to hear that you love the auto reviews featured in our every issue. Darpan team is happy to know that our efforts are appreciated, and that our articles are helping readers like you pursue their interests further. I really found the article on Summer Fun useful. Sometimes it really helps if there is a list of fun things one can do on a holiday or the weekend. It definitely saves time in searching for events or activities yourself. And especially when you have young kids who like to be outdoors, a to-do list can be the best thing for parents. After reading the article, my family and I took a riverboat ride around BC. It was a lot of fun, and our kids totally enjoyed it. - Seema Mehta, Vancouver
Re: Summer Activities Thank you Seema, I am glad you and your family liked the article and had an enjoyable boat ride. Our aim is to make the magazine as useful and entertaining as possible to our readers and supporters. Hope you have a great summer with your family. – Editor

Thank you so much for the article on sunblocks. I am always confused as to which is the best and useful sunblock to buy, but the article really helped me choose the right sunblock for me. Keep up the good work. – Rohini Prasad, Abbotsford
Re : Beauty Yes Rohini, the beauty article on sunblocks is not only useful, but also makes for an interesting read. During the hot summer months, sunblock is a must and protects your skin from the ill effects of the sun. Our beauty feature for this issue is on lip balms. I hope you enjoy reading it. – Editor

are victims of domestic violence, into drugs, forced into flesh trading, victims of rapes, poverty and HIV-AIDS. The money I receive along with the awards, I donate it to the community organizations. I believe that I am made to help others, because I have taken so much from society. I have to pay it back. Almost every year I visit Khadur Sahib (Punjab) India, to help thousands of needy students studying in seven schools, two colleges and six professional academies run under the able guidance of Baba Sewa Singh Kar Sewa Wale. We are training students to become top sports icons, teachers, preachers, professionals, doctors, engineers, police officials and administrators.
1 You recently received the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award. Please share that moment.
I was heartened to receive the award in March 2015. The award was in recognition for my accomplishments through long years of selfless service to the society in Canada and beyond its global borders. It was a marvellous moment and a superb achievement of my life. Before practically holding the award, I thanked my Lord and my wonderful mother. I was a cow grazer in my young days. When I got that award, I felt that a poor cow grazer is now receiving the most prestigious award from the PM. This award will encourage me to work more for the benefit of humanity. 2 You are famously known as the author of the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism on multimedia technology – insights on this document and your work on it.
The Sikh encyclopaedia was released by the Prime Minster of Canada, Jean Chrétien on December 10, 1996. In all, it took me 16 years to write it. Once a friend of mine discouraged me by saying, “the encyclopaedias are not grown on trees, don’t dream even”. It was a booster for me. When I was working on it, I spent eight hours working for my livelihood and the rest on the encyclopaedia, sleeping for two to three hours a day for years. I am the first person to use multimedia technology in the field of encyclopaedias. It is a reference tool on Sikh faith, history, culture, heritage and the Sikh way of life. Thousands of digitized and animated pages of text, audio, video and graphics cover information on bettering human life, promoting multiculturalism, mutual harmony, integrity, peace, prosperity and wellbeing of the entire human race. Having 50,000 pages, it also contains 1,500 paintings and photos. It was created after a lot of research travelling dozens of countries in the world. I am happy that ultimately I was able to pay back to the society at large. 3 You have also produced and programmed Multimedia Sikh Museums in the world using the Robotic technology. Do talk about the museums.
I set up the first of its kind robotic museum in 2004 in India. I learnt about the basics of the robotic technology from NASA, and I used the technology for the museum settings. It was the first time in the world that anybody used robotic technology in the field of such museums. Visitors can switch to watch, listen and hear whatever is in their mind for hundreds of hours. I used Punjabi, English, Hindi and French languages in these museums. The museums are an immense tool for promoting multiculturalism, tolerance, mutual harmony, integrity, peace and prosperity in the world. So far I have set up six museums in the world, one is in Canada, and five are in India. 4 Being an experienced drug addiction counsellor,
It is said that there is no cure for drug use. Every day you have to make up your mind that I should not take drugs. There is need of education, awareness, treatment, counseling and rehabilitation. I have arranged and addressed many seminars,

7 Who is your role model?
Dr. Raghbir Singh Bains SIKH SCHOLAR, COMMUNITY ACTIVIST, ENCYCLOPAEDIST, MUSEOLOGIST DRUG THERAPIST AND ENVIRONMENTALIST
Almighty Lord is the spirit behind me and my mother is the role model. Everything I do today is due to my mother. She was the power and passion behind me. She was a nice lady, always helping and thinking for the well-being of the community and nation. Whatever I do, my mother is there watching me. I think that I am on a right path. 8 How do you see the growth of the Indian community in British Columbia?
conferences, groups, camps and workshops. It’s not only the drugs, but TV, social media, Internet and smart phones, which though are good technologies, are misused for bad purposes. It takes a short time to get into drugs, but a longer time to get out of it. The problem is always pinching my mind. I think that due to this evil, there are rapes, domestic violence, divorces, separations and breaking of the families. I wish all the governments, societies, religions, medical and cultural groups work towards ending this evil.
Our forefathers migrated to this country in search of good pastures. They worked and died for this country and for its prosperity, making it a better one, and we are trying to add more to it. I wish that our new generation works hard to give back what the country and our forefathers have done for them. The Indian community in B.C. is flourishing. Majority of the people are very good and industrious people, hard working and working for the prosperity, well-being, and development of the country.
5 Do talk about the classic books you wrote.
9 Having won hundreds of local, national and international awards, how do you feel receiving the honour?
I started writing articles, stories and theatre plays for stages in my teens. Then I started writing books on history and religious philosophy, like the life history of Guru Hargobind Ji, life history of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and life history of Guru Angad Dev in English and Punjabi. These are classic books in which I used 65 paintings that I had especially gotten made. Those paintings were prepared in Canada, but used in India. Those books are available throughout the world. The book on history of Guru Angad Dev ji talks about how the Punjabi alphabet was created and modified in the world, giving its proper history. 6 What does voluntary work mean to you?
Volunteering is my passion. It is a mission of my life which I undertook at very tender years of my life. At the age of 10, my mother took a promise from me that I will do volunteer work my whole life – whether I get education or not. She said it is your duty and it will be your passion, lifestyle and conviction. I started volunteering by cleaning the smelling streets of my village at the age of 10. These days I am not cleaning the smelling streets, but cleaning the smelling societies. I volunteer for charitable trusts, senior citizen societies, educational institutions and those who

Receiving awards and titles are a boon and gift from God – I got the Order of British Columbia; Good Citizen of the City of Surrey; The Order of Khalsa, Punjab; Queen Elizabeth 11’s ‘Golden’ and ‘Diamond’ Jubilee Medals; and Lifetime Achievement Awards among many others. One important award I got is the Sikh Scholar of the Computer Age from Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Amritsar. Sometimes I feel very happy. Not that I am getting the award, but because there is someone on this earth to say thank you to me. While working on the encyclopaedia, I couldn’t be helpful and supportive to my wife, but now when I get any of the awards, my wife is with me. I feel happy and great that as per my mission and duty, I am doing something for the happiness, goodness, peace and prosperity of the community as well as the global society. It gives me a boost that I have to work more for the needy and less fortunate. 10 If you had to sum up you life in a few words, what would you say?
I am the happiest person to volunteer for others. I believe “If we do good unto others, we get good”.

suit for all of them, the idea of using open data to solve real-world problems excited them. Thus, the decision to sign up did not take much time and thought. The CODE 2015 had set out three categories: youth employment, business opportunities, and healthy living. Since the four of them are still at school and so concerned with employment opportunities themselves, they decided on choosing the youth employment category. The first 24 hours were spent brainstorming and sifting through the datasets released by the organizers (approximately 200,000 datasets). Being graduate students, the significance of post-secondary education for building a career was obvious to them. Analyzing information from the vast variety of datasets available showed that a post-secondary education lands one a 20 per cent better chance of getting employment and on an average a 75 per cent chance of landing a better salary. “Hence we decided to develop an app that would tackle the problem of finding a post-secondary institute for a high school graduate based on his monetary constraints. The following 24 hours were spent in cleaning the data and creating the app,” shares

Sabharwal and Bhaskar were involved in developing the visualizations and aesthetics of the app. Choosing a university program quickly became the focus of their app. “Most of the competitors in the market create visualizations that only allow one to compare a few institutions at a time. Given the fast pace of today’s world, we wanted to be able to display all the information at once. This also helps reduce information overload, explains Sabharwal. The app shows a map of Canada displaying all the post-secondary institutions in the country, besides which is a list of institutions in each province. Then there is a map that shows all the programs offered by each institution. The programs are colour coded based as per the cost, so the darker the red, the more expensive the institution is. Alongside, the average rent is also shown depending on where the institution is located. There are also two bar charts to help filtering based on tuition and housing rent. “The novelty of our app is that even chart and visualization can be used to filter the data. If a student has an idea on what he wants to do, then he can start directly by choosing the program and then filtering further based on his monetary constraints. Whereas, if a student only has the starting preference of the area or province he wants to live in, he can start from there, and then further filter down based on his criteria, points out Sabharwal. Being a freelancer for 20 plus years, finding someone who would take a risk on her was difficult for Kumar. “I read as ‘high risk’ to potential employers – having come from a lot of freedom and autonomy. To look stylish vs. trendy for summer, control the colour palette – Stay away from fast fashion with cheap fabrics and lots of prints. If you want to create a stylish look, go for classic summer fabrics of cotton, silk and linen. Keep silhouettes feminine, yet structured. Comfortable shoes. Heels are try-hard. Nike trainers in limited edition collaborations are a favourite of mine, as are Marni and Celine sandals. Classic white shirt is a must for a year round wardrobe – not just summer. It can be worn with tailored wide leg trousers for a dressy look, over a capri for the chic cosmopolitan look and over your bikini as a beach cover-up. Healthy skin and hair – Your skin is your largest and only visible organ – take care of it. Fake tans are not acceptable here. Moisturize and keep hair hydrated. Great hair and skin will make (almost) anything you’re wearing look good. Light colours – go for a sea breeze palette of white, light blue, coral, yellow and gold jewellery.

ot many people can say they’ve travelled around the world to play in tournaments, acted as the captain of their sports team, or won various trophies by the age of 13. This is, however, typical for young soccer player Juvi Kooner. For him, soccer has been more than a game – it’s been a way to make friends, grow as a person and learn. This Tamanawis Secondary School student, who is currently the captain of the Canadian Team Under 14-16, began playing soccer when he was just four and J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 1 5 Reflecting The South-Asian Lifestyle

His father’s decision to get him involved in soccer turned out to be a great one, as Juvi has enjoyed the sport ever since he started playing, and wants to continue doing for a long time. “It is fun and something I always enjoy,” he says. Juvi has also made many close friends through soccer, stating it as one of the many benefits of playing the sport. In fact, some

of his favourite aspects of soccer are, “Making a lot of friends, enjoying yourself, and expressing yourself with the ball.” Being a soccer player is something he is proud and passionate about. His favourite part of being an athlete is putting in hard work and effort to reach his goals. Juvi believes that putting your complete effort leads to becoming a better player and being happy. Despite his success, there are failures that the young player has encountered along the way. Optimistically, Juvi believes that these setbacks can be opportunities for development, which can help facilitate growth as an athlete and as a teammate. Sharing one of his disheartening moments, he remembers feeling let down when his

However, though it was an emotional situation for him and his teammates, the 13-year-old caption believes it taught them a valuable lesson. They learned to work harder and as a team. “Winning trophies is also great, obviously, but it’s also important to learn something when you’re playing – to get the most out of it,” adds the young captain. Like many young athletes, Juvi gives credit to his family for playing a crucial role in getting him to where he is today. He points out that their continued assistance, advice and understanding has helped him in many ways. He believes that family support and guidance from his coaches are the most important factors to his success. Soccer has become a major part of Juvi’s life, and although it can be a time-consuming activity, Juvi has been able to manage his time accordingly – it hasn't interrupted his schoolwork. He shares, “Soccer does actually take up a lot of time, but I go to school from morning to afternoon, come back home, go to practice, and then go home for some quality family time.” His schedule indicates that Juvi has been able to balance soccer, school and home life quite well. His advice to other athletes is to “express yourself, enjoy, and work hard.” Juvi plans on continuing to follow these points in his pursuit of playing for a professional soccer team one day. Looking at the successful and positive growth of Juvi, one can say that putting young kids into organized sports has many benefits. It can have positive effects on the child’s physical and mental wellbeing. It also allows children to gain leadership and teamwork skills at a young age, which are beneficial in the long run.

Pre-season training will start soon and I know it is going to be a lot of hard work, but that is okay because I have done it before,” says Chungh confidently. off with playing soccer with most of his cousins. However, in high school he was encouraged to try out for football. “Once I started playing and excelling at the game, I knew it was for me because it was fun to be a winner and go into battle with your team mates,” he says. Their team became AAA provincial football champions thrice and Chungh was picked as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times. Being MVP helped Chungh’s morale and confidence as he felt rewarded for his efforts. Following this, Chungh also went to Florida twice where he was picked to play for the world team against Team USA. Soon after his high school graduation, he was ranked as the number one player across Canada. “Being ranked number one just after high school is flattering and humbling, this accolade was bestowed upon me by others who know the game and how to rate players, therefore it was another flattering achievement,” he expresses. With so much under his belt at such a young age, Chungh had the opportunity of joining football teams at universities across North America. But it was the University of Calgary that eventually swayed him. “By this time I knew everything about football, so I had a level of confidence in my abilities. However, I also knew that this was a big step up, as playing against the top university teams in Canada would also mean playing with the top players in Canada,” he says. After coming through a successful four years at Calgary, he was ranked in the CFL draft, and that’s when he realized that playing professional football had become a real possibility. He also graduated from the University of Calgary with a major in Geography. His immediate as well as extended family

this year. He outshined almost 200 other players from across the country. He has also attended a training camp with the New York Giants which has helped him gain valuable experience and coaching. The talented player feels that the learning curve for prof-essional football is tough. According to him, the difficulty of playing and competing with a wide range of age groups is a big challenge for a young player like himself. However, he is hopeful for the future, and wants to continue to grow as a football player as long as he is capable. He acknowledges the recognition he has received for his hard work, but is also hopeful for many more accomplishments. “I realise the potential position I am thrust into now as a role model for the youngsters, budding athletes, and especially the youth in my own culture and community. It is a responsibility I will relish, and it is also an opportunity to pay back, which I feel I must do to show my gratitude for the fortunes and opportunities that have come my way,” concludes Chungh.

WHO IS AJAY BHATT? Ajay Bhatt was born in India in 1957. He completed his graduation from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He completed his master’s degree from The City University of New York (CUNY), United States. His only reason for choosing the school was that, as an undergraduate, he’d studied and liked an engineering textbook written by a CUNY employee. He is the co-inventor of the Universal Serial Bus, popularly known as the USB. Bhatt joined Intel corporation in 1990 as a senior staff architect on the chipset architecture team in Folsom. He is an Indian-American computer architect who helped define and develop several widely used technologies, including AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port), PCI Express, Platform Power management architecture and various chipset improvements. He holds 34 US and International patents. Ajay Bhatt rose to global celebrity as the co-inventor of USB through an Intel 2009 TV advertisement showing him as a rock star, where he was portrayed by actor Sunil Narkar. He won the Achievement in Excellence Award for his contribution in PCI Express specification development in 2002. In 2013, he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Science & Technology Award at The Asian Awards in London. He won the European Inventor Award 2013 for leading a team of computer experts at Intel that developed USB technology. He received The Light of India Award in 2012 for his contributions in advancement of science and technology.

CONNECTING THE WORLD
AJAY BHATT
Today, the USB is found in billions of electronic devices all over the world, from webcams to cell phones and memory sticks. It has made computers easy to use, and the credit for it goes to Ajay Bhatt, co-inventor of the USB. The intelligent Indian-American computer architect and Intel Fellow talks about his invention, journey towards success, and the latest generation of the USB that hit the market two months ago.

jay Bhatt – though the name doesn’t ring a bell at the very moment you hear it, it has a lot of success and achievement attached to it. To start with, he is one of the inventors of a device which is used in almost every computer in the world, and that too on a daily basis. Ajay Bhatt, an Indian-American computer architect, is the co-inventor of the Universal Serial Bus – popularly known as the USB. Though the device’s popularity is such that it needs no definition, in simple terms, the USB allows users to connect devices to a computer more easily. “The USB has made computers easy to use,” says Bhatt, Intel’s Chief Architect and Fellow, Client Computing Group. “It has enabled a variety of new applications
that were not possible before. It is really for those people who don’t care about technology, but just want to get their job done. So the USB has clearly enabled new uses of the computer and it has attracted new users to the computer.” As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”, the idea of creating a USB came to Bhatt’s mind at his home in California, 25 years ago. Seeing how difficult it was for his wife and daughter to use the computer, due to the annoying process of rebooting and reconfiguring the system, even for simple tasks like printing, Bhatt thought of designing something that would make computers easy to use. “Something that a common person can use – you just plug it in and it works,” he adds, further explaining, “You don’t

WHAT IS A USB? USB, short for Universal Serial Bus, is an industry standard developed in the mid1990s that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and electronic devices. The USB interface works by ‘translating’ the different signals from peripherals and delivering them into one centralized message stream to the computer’s operating system. The first model, USB 1, was introduced in the market in the late 1990s and was an instant hit. Later versions are the USB 2.0 which released in 2000, and USB 3.0 that made its debut in 2008. Both have vastly improved data transfer speeds. The latest generation of the USB is the USB Type C which appeared in the market two months ago. The latest version has not only improved the performance, but has addressed the most disliked feature of the USB i.e. the connector. It is the new thinner, smaller connector that is also flappable. All USB plugs are compatible. So if you buy a new computer, you don’t have to upgrade all the rest of your equipment like video camera, mobile phone.

have to look for computer settings, or computer disks, or computer software to get anything done.” Today, the USB is found in billions of electronic devices all over the world, from webcams to cell phones and memory sticks. It has also streamlined work for hardware and software developers. Yet, the idea was not completely obvious when it was initially suggested – one of the biggest challenges Bhatt had to face while creating the USB. Many thought that it would be an impossible problem to solve. “A lot of people didn’t understand what I was trying to do,” recollects Bhatt. “In a world where in the PCs the compatibility was required with all
these existing software, some people prematurely concluded that the USB couldn’t be developed.” Once the work on the project began, there were quite a few instances when Bhatt and his team faced difficult moments, especially during the initial stage. “Usually when you start something like the USB, it’s usually early in the programme, where you don’t have the specifics and you are missing a whole bunch of necessary details and you have to get people to trust you and to work with you,” expresses Bhatt. Influencing people was the hardest part, states Bhatt. “Technical things can be solved, but peoples issues are the hardest ones. Each of our

The humble coinventor is quick to point out that this was not the work of one person. “It has been a group effort. collaborators had slightly different vision, ideas and approaches in mind, and tapping into everybody’s imagination, and converging on the collective best ideas, and then coming up with the final USB technology was probably the most difficult part,” he reveals. He further adds, “There were ups and downs throughout the development. At various times of the project, it felt like the problems were numerous, insurmountable and the project could be gone next morning. Of course you sleep on the issues; you come back to work next day and make another attempt at solving the problems. That’s how the whole project went.” Bhatt and his team started working on the USB in 1992. In November 1995, they had a specification and in 1996, they had their first set of products. Ever since, the use of the USB has grown, and now you see them everywhere. “In a fast moving world of high technology and computers, a lot of technologies come and go, they become obsolete in a short amount of time because the newer technology can easily displace the old ones. But I’m amazed how we were able to improve and extend the USB technology over the years, and it still continues to evolve,” says Bhatt, who is credited as being the father of the USB standard. The humble co-inventor is quick

to point out that this was not the work of one person. “It has been a group effort. There have been diverse group of people at Intel and across the computer industry, who have used tremendous amount of energy, creativity and imagination, and of course all of us were resilient – so we were ready for any and all adversities. That’s why we succeeded in the end, because we just wouldn’t give up.” It is interesting to note, however, that it was not the USB that got Bhatt recognition, but an Intel advertisement which portrayed him as a rock star. Intel was doing a series of commercials with the theme being the “Sponsors of Tomorrow”. They were looking for a technology that a common person can relate to, something that people use everyday. That’s how Intel’s marketing team approached Bhatt and the commercial came about. “Even though I was not in the commercial, my name was there; so everybody started Googling the name. That’s when my background came to light for a lot of people,” says the Portland-based Intel Fellow, who has been a part of the company since the last 25 years. Ask him if he sees himself as a rock star at Intel, and Bhatt jokingly says, “Not necessarily. I am surrounded by some superstars. Intel has a heavy concentration of very smart and creative people. It feels like I am going to grad school every single day.” The recognition, however, turned out to be
COVER STORY beneficial for Bhatt – it opened a lot of doors for him to do new things. “The struggle that I had while creating the original USB is not there anymore. Convincing people or to launch new projects is become relatively easy as a result of the recognition and higher position that I have.” The success of Bhatt’s invention is such that he is currently engaged in defining the latest generation of the USB – USB Type C – which appeared in the market two months ago. The latest version has not only improved the performance, but has addressed the most disliked feature of the USB i.e. the connector. “Lot of people try to plug the USB one way, it doesn’t go in, so they flip the connector and plug it in the other way. With USB Type C, the user does not have to worry about which end is up. You can just plug it in and it works,” shares Bhatt, calling it the new thinner, smaller connector that is also flappable (Reversible). Beyond the USB, Bhatt has developed several widely used technologies, including Accelerated Graphics Port, PCI Express, Platform Power management architecture and various chipset improvements. He holds 34 US and International patents, and has received many awards for his work – 2013 European Inventor Award, The Asian Award 2013, and The Light of India Award 2012, to name a few. He is frequently invited to give technical talks at various universities around the world. One would think that Bhatt’s life revolves only around his work, but there is more to him than meets the eye. The 57 year old engineer is passionate about photography and travelling. On days when he gets time, he goes out to shoot pictures or take lessons. “In and around Portland in the Indian community, if there is a function, I help out by photographing the event. I think I can give memories to people.” Talking about his love for travel, he would love to revisit his favourite destination – Africa. “Africa is unlike anything I have seen. We went on a safari for about a month; it was phenomenal.” Bhatt is very close to his family – who are proud of his work and achievements. The intelligent inventor, however believes that his work is not as meaningful as compared to what his daughter, Priya, is doing. Priya is pursuing research in genetics; she is working with a group of scientists in California where they are looking for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. “They are using computational methods, which involve the use of computers to look though the large set of data to determine genetic patterns in people who are predisposed to get an Alzheimer’s disease. condition much early,” explains the proud father. Belonging to the field of science, but different specializations, Bhatt and his daughter do seek each other’s help when needed. “Anytime she is struggling with some technical problems and wants to discuss how to solve it, she talks to me about the approach. I can’t give her a lot of advice on her detailed work, but I can give her advice on an approach, and vice versa when I am thinking of ideas.” Just like his daughter, his experience meeting youngsters at various institutions tells him that the current generation of kids are very smart. “These youngsters are learning a lot more about computing than I ever did at their age. I am very impressed by some students I have interacted with. When I see the new generation, I think world is really flat and we can tap into imagination from capable people from all over the world.” One advice he would like to give anyone who wishes to follow his path is to be fearless and persistent. “If you have imagination, then it is possible to make your vision a reality. Don’t follow the conventional path, think differently, and make impossible possible,” says Bhatt, who states that his observant nature of how things work around him helps him come up with new ideas – some of which materialize immediately, and some over time. “Timing is everything, and one just has to have multiple ideas in their mind to work on the right ideas at the right time. The best is yet to come,” says Bhatt summing up.

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner recently stated that she wants the power to force gangsters to pay their own medical bills. Hepner said that known gangsters who are shot, but refuse to co-operate with the police, should be held liable for their own medical costs. She also said she will be talking to B.C.’s Attorney-General to see if the current civil forfeiture legislation could be employed in this way. On contacting the Mayor to clarify the same, the Mayor’s offer sent a statement by the Mayor to Darpan saying: “There is a frustration that the individuals who have been shot are more than happy to receive the care from our first responders and medical system, yet are obstructive when questioned by police. Given the fact that these cases are creating an unnecessary burden on our medical staff, resources and system at taxpayer’s expense, I believe that if these uncooperative individuals are found guilty of these crimes, they should be made to pay back the costs of their treatment… and if they can’t pay it, the costs should be billed to their families. I will be reaching out to the Attorney General to explore if such an avenue of restitution can be made through the Civil Forfeiture Act.”

Young people looking to get involved in gangs are looking to create an identity and self esteem and say, ‘Look at me, I’m important, I’m part of this criminal underworld.’ But now, we have two groups, they’re low level; there’s no pride in that. There is nothing to hang your hat on by saying, look at me, I’m a low level drug dealer,” says Rob Rai, manager of Safe Schools Department for the Surrey School District.
This goes to show that the recent shootings and attacks have had a deep impact on the residents of Surrey, instilling in them a sense of fear while traveling in and around the city. When asked who is responsible for the crime rate in Surrey to increase, about 15 per cent of the participants blamed the federal government, 18 per cent pinpointed it on the civic government, while 21 per cent blamed it on the police. Majority of the blame was on the provincial government, with nearly 47 per cent participants indicating that the provincial government's inability to stop or control gang wars or shootings has led to the increasing crime rate.

Let’s take a lesson or two from ocean’s waves, let’s go our own way. Loose fitting shirts will be a wardrobe staple this summer. Le 31 put out the Longline T-shirt. It is a tad oversized, and comes in several different colours – you have olive green, white, blue, tan, and powder blue. Think 1990s all over again. Le 31’s t-shirts will go great with their Sporty Sweatpant Bermudas – yes, they are shorts. The pairing – with either a gray, black or blue short – says, “I’m chill, I’m laid back.” Trust us. Newbalance offers reasonably priced items, and they are high quality. One shoe to look out for is from the 420 Sneakers line; they have that “retro-style design.” Christopher Bates is a designer to keep an eye out for. He understands that men – although it is okay to be reserved and proper – need to be wild and free. And well, that is the feel for summer 2015 in menswear. Bates loves solids. He pairs simple screen printed t-shirts with light, solidcoloured cardigans and tailored shorts. That is a great look for attending a beach brunch, or if you are hitting the road with your favourite road trip pals. If you are looking to dress up a bit, Bates will inspire in that department as well. coloured suspenders in the outfit – they must be hanging off the back of the pants though. The look will come to life with a sleek wingtip shoe. While we are talking about dressing up – you know, when you are out in the city at a cocktail or garden party – it is best to mix and match. Try a mohair and wool suit jacket, Hawaiian-patterned linen shirt, and solid-coloured tie on for size. Down below, sport solid-coloured, fitted shorts, or a darker denim. Complete your outfit with a funkysock pair and a dark dress shoe. Okay, we have the basics covered. But what will you wear on your head? We briefly covered the 1990s style – loose, carefree – but that decade is truly back with a vengeance. The bucket hat is back. Try purchasing an Exotic Leaf Hat by Hentsch Man. If you choose a bucket hat that is patterned, it is best to not wear such a loud outfit. If you are going out and want to seem more reserved, farmer-inspired straw hats are working their way up the runway. These would look best with a dark-coloured suit, and crazy-patterned pocket square. On your hard working feet, make sure they breathe a bit. As we have stated several times, plastic sandals are in at the moment, but it is okay to veer away from the norm. Alvaro Gonzalez is selling higher end footwear this season. Their big toe binding sandals come in varied colours, such as olive green, black, and navy blue. If you are traveling, be sure to pack a vintage striped knit cardigan in your overnight bag. These are perfect for long plane rides, freezing air conditioned road trips, and even around the camp fire. We recommend Brioni or Pringle of Scotland items. Guys, don’t break the bank with the looks we suggest. Dress on a dime if you have to, and feel comfortable. The summertime is a time for loose ideas and freedom; let your wardrobe express that through and through.

Fresh, Sugar Lip Treatment SPF15, $26
A superstar among tinted lip balms, Fresh’s line of lip treatments are awardwinning, and for good reasons. First, the packaging: modern, sturdy, screwtop metal tubes that feel good and weighty in hand. More importantly, the goods: lip balm that’s deliciously cushiony, featuring real sugar (a natural humectant), vitamins, antioxidants, plumping-essential fatty acids and SPF 15 to boot. They all have Fresh’s signature sparkling citrus scent. Shades range from poppy brights to subtle nudes, with varying levels of pigmentation. For more colour, try Cherry, Berry or Coral; for something more sheer, choose Petal, Tulip or the new Nude shade. Available at sephora.ca

t the height of summer when looks and effort all lighten up, tinted lip balms are key for capturing that carefree summer vibe. Besides giving your lips a dose of colour, tinted balms provide summerparched lips with much needed moisture. Salt water, chlorine, frothy cocktails, UV rays, late nights – these are all ingredients for fun summer events, but they also take their toll on delicate lips, leaving them parched and ragged. Effortless to apply, these tinted lip balms are fool-proof even without a mirror, and many are buildable if you want to layer on the colour. But one swipe should give lips a healthy, subtle glow while providing comfort through a good, proper lip balm. Every woman should have at least one of these in every purse, pocket and beach tote this summer.

nutrition label can read like a foreign alphabet. From A to K and B1 to B6, it can be difficult to determine which letter or number will help you lose weight, decrease your stress, boost your energy or possibly even all of the above. Ensuring you’re ingesting the right amounts to receive the maximum benefit doesn’t have to be as hard as translating a language you don’t know; a little understanding of the functions and food sources of the most common nutrients can help you feed the needs of a healthy and happy body.

WHAT IS A VITAMIN? A vitamin is a group of organic compounds the body requires and uses in limited amounts. They are nutrients obtained through one’s diet to maintain normal growth and development. “Vitamins are essential for life and health,” says Michelle Shepherd, registered dietitian and owner of Westcoast Nutrition. “They are an integral part of every body system, and are key to complete the chemical reactions needed to create energy and repair our cells. Without enough vitamins we limit our body’s

capacity to work and heal.” Nutrition consultant and registered dietitian Natalie Brown adds, “Vitamins do not provide energy, but they do help the body grow and function by boosting the immune system, strengthening bones, helping with eyesight, and fighting infection.” There are 13 essential vitamins, all of which are needed for our body to function. They can be grouped into two categories; fat soluble and water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty tissue, used when needed, and can quickly become toxic when in abundance. These include vitamins A, D, E and K. Water soluble vitamins, which include B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, biotin, folate, and pantothenic acid are not stored in large amounts in the body, necessary in frequent but small doses, and excreted by the kidneys when in excess. Recommended amounts of all vitamins differ based on the specific vitamin and vary between demographics. “Our requirements can change based on age, gender and health,” explains Shepherd. “Older adults need more vitamin B12 as we become less efficient at absorbing it as we age. Young women need more iron to make up for losses during menstruation. Those with lots of repair to do, such as after surgery or if you have a history of smoking,

DARPAN HEALTH “Vitamins are essential for life and health,” says Michelle Shepherd, registered dietitian and owner of Westcoast Nutrition. “They are an integral part of every body system, and are key to complete the chemical reactions needed to create energy and repair our cells. Without enough vitamins we limit our body’s capacity to work and heal.” benefit from increased intake of food sources of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants to support that process.” It’s best to consult a dietitian to determine if your daily needs are being met and what supplements may be of benefit to your body. While the focus on vitamins can seem big, they are only needed in small amounts. “The best way to meet your daily needs is through natural food sources,” explains Brown. “Foods that are nutrient-dense not only contain essential vitamins and minerals but also contain dietary fibre and other naturally-occurring health benefits.” Food should always be consumed first, as a healthy diet most often provides enough to meet the recommended intake. “Most vitamins and minerals can be obtained through a well-planned diet based on whole, minimally processed foods,” says Shepherd, suggesting that each meal should contain a plate half full of brightly-coloured fruits and vegetables to ensure that key nutrients are being consumed in beneficial quantities.
SUPPLEMENTS Despite the ease of a balanced diet, ensuring all 13 vitamins are accounted for can still seem overwhelming. It’d be tempting to turn to a supplement to make eating easier, but experts caution against their use for many healthy eaters. “Whole foods provide optimal balance that your body absorbs and uses more efficiently than supplements,” says Brown. Supplements should be used when your diet lacks a certain vitamin based on dietary restrictions, food aversions or certain lifestyle situations requiring more than food sources can provide. “While it can be beneficial to supplement certain vitamins, many do not seem to work as well in a

Many vitamins and minerals work together in our body, so taking one or the other just doesn’t provide the right balance.” While it’s easy to think that more of a good thing must be better when it comes to our health, it isn’t so with vitamins. Too much may be toxic; supplements may not be necessary if your diet is full of good greens and fresh fruits. “Do not purchase a supplement that contains more than 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance,” warns Brown. While an excess of many vitamins won’t have a negative effect, it’s mostly possible to overdose on others with harmful effects. Brown cautions that vitamins A, D and E are especially toxic at high levels and warns that excess of C and B6 can be unhealthy, as well.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) Function: Energy production from carbohydrates and fats, nervous system support, maintenance of cellular and organ function, digestion, and neurological functions Found in: Trout, pork, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, green peas, beans, cereal grains
Similarly, the negative effects of sweet treats and fast foods can’t be counterbalanced with a multivitamin; an overhaul of your diet is necessary for your overall health. “I see lots of people taking several supplements but putting very little thought into what they eat,” says Shepherd. “The truth is you can not out-supplement a bad diet or lacklustre lifestyle. The best results for health and energy come from eating well, getting enough sleep and regularly doing enjoyable physical activity.”

So what is aqua
Exercises to improve balance and flexibility
Michelle Wong, an aqua fitness instructor at Kerrisdale Community Centre and UBC Pool, explains that a standard aqua fitness class is usually an hour in length and consists of the following four components: warm up, cardio, strengthening, and cool down. The best part of this workout – it’s done in the water. So besides getting some relief from the summer heat, you also get fitter. The fitness instructor goes on to say that although the four components are the breakdown of an average aqua fitness class, there may be some variance depending on the instructor and specific class you decide to take.

Not only does aqua fitness have many different types of classes to choose from, it is also very accessible — there is no “best” age to participate. Wong explains, “All ages are welcome to come and join.” Despite this, Wong mentions that the classes she teaches tend to be most popular with women around the age of 40 and onwards. Wong lists the following to be her top reasons to join aqua fitness, “aqua fitness is a great way to meet new people and socialize, I always see a lot of patrons coming early to mingle and meet new members of the class. Everybody is super friendly and loves chatting! Not to mention, it can also help you meet a new workout buddy who would motivate you to come to class and exercise.” Aqua fitness is different than other forms of exercise – it has a low impact on joints. “This allows patrons to have good aerobic exercise without the high impact and stress on the muscles and joints,” points out Wong.

Aqua fitness is different than other forms of exercise – it has a low impact on joints. This allows patrons to have good aerobic exercise without the high impact and stress on the muscles and joints. It is also a great choice for those who have injuries. According to Wong, “aqua fitness is a great form of exercise with low impact, which means it’s the perfect activity for people who may have injuries and need recuperation.” Besides the social and physical benefits, aqua fitness also helps the heart circulate the blood flow better due to the hydrostatic pressure of the water pushing on the surface of the body. Wong explains that her personal favourite aspect of teaching these classes is being able to do exercises with the participants. “I love to do exercises along with the class to help motivate and push them to work harder and get their hearts pumping — I want them to really feel that they had a good workout and deserve that extra serving they might eat at dinner that night.” It is also worth noting that previous experience or skills are not needed to enrol in an aqua fitness class. In fact, Wong explains that not knowing how to swim is not a problem at all. She shares, “There is nothing you really need to know before going to an aquafit class. You don’t have to know how to swim or anything, and the instructor will always demonstrate all the actions that will be done in the class.” This makes aqua fitness an easy fitness activity to partake in, regardless of your level of swimming ability and past experience in this type of workout. Aqua fitness is a fun and accessible form of exercise offered throughout the lower mainland. So whether you’re looking for a different form of exercise, or a way to socialize with new people, aqua fitness is definitely worth looking into.

Factors that can lead to a bad lawn: Over or under watering:
WHERE THE GRASS IS
GREENER
You lawn needs about one inch of water a week. Some people water frequently but not deeply, causing the grass to grow shallow weak roots. Others don’t water enough and the grass struggles.
Over or under fertilizing: Again, too much or too little is a bad thing. Get your soil levels checked to determine the best course of action.
Cutting the grass too short:
Only cut 1/3 of the top of the grass so that the roots are well-protected.

There are, however, a few other factors that need to be kept in mind as well – namely the use of water, need for oxygen, grass type, and the right kind of soil and fertilizer. “Water and air are important in helping build a healthy lawn,” points out Scott Duff, lawn care expert and owner of Aura Landscaping. “This is why I recommend lawn aeration to ensure the roots get enough oxygen, and watering it deeply and infrequently to build deep, strong roots.” It also allows for improved drainage so you don’t end up with a small lake in your backyard. The grass type depends on the area and the amount of sun the lawn gets. “In shaded areas, I would recommend rye grass over blue grass,” says Duff, adding that it is important to get the soil tested to determine PH levels. “This can help you know how much or how little fertilizer you need.” Coming back to the right tools, the healthy

growth of your lawn depends on the type of mower you use. “For hilly uneven terrain, homeowners need a lawn mower that has an all-wheel drive,” says Duff recommending the Husqvarna HU800AWD mower, as it has the ability to get through the most uneven terrain, and features premium wheels that will not tear up grass. Duff shares some tips to get your lawn and garden ready for the warm months ahead:
Equipment check Always check your equipment before you begin. If you didn’t drain the fuel from your machines prior to storage, be sure to replace it now and clean your equipment to prevent any chain, belt or blade issues. Also check the filters and spark plug to ensure the machine is running at peak performance.

Winter clean up We all need a fresh start sometimes, even our lawns. Start the season right by clearing away all winter debris like salt, leaves, sticks and pet waste. Duff uses the Husqvarna 125B blower for a speedy cleanup, as it features a well-balanced design making it easy for homeowners to operate. He then gives the lawn a deep raking to remove thatch and dying grass blades to help promote growth. It also breaks up those heavy-matted patches that lead to mould.

Growing the right grass Choosing the right type of grass for your environment is key. For example, homeowners with kids may look to use ryegrass – a good selection for home lawns, sports fields and high traffic areas, such as playgrounds. On the other hand, those looking for a more lush lawn should consider bluegrass. It has a nice colour and texture, can be easily established from seed, forming one of the highest quality lawns, and is good for homes, parks and golf courses.
Making the cut Mowing in the same direction every time can damage the grass blade which leads to ruts and bare patches. Be sure to change directions and even try cutting diagonally to achieve a cleaner cut.
Always keep blades sharp Dull blades tear instead of cut, which causes more damage to the lawn; and as a result, requires more of the plants energy to fix the damage.
Always cut grass when dry

PUNEET P. K. SANDHAR
BARINDER S. SANGHERA
When the grass is dry, the blades will stand up straight and make it easier to cut. When it’s wet, the blades will bend, resulting in an uneven lawn.
Avoid cutting on a hot day
ICBC/PERSONAL INJURY
Cutting grass on a hot day leaves the roots susceptible to the sun and can put them under heat stress and can damage the roots. The best way to prevent heat stress is to only cut 1/3 of the top of the grass. This will ensure you have a nice, clean-looking lawn and that the roots are well-protected.
IMMIGRATION LAW
Scott advices mowing the lawn once a week depending on the climate and growth. “In shaded areas, I cut once every two weeks, because grass on average tends to grow slower. In sunny areas when there is a lot of growth, I cut once a week, but I stick to the 1/3 rule.”

SMARTEN YOUR
HOME Your homes are no longer just about brick walls and pretty curtains. Technology is fast transforming our humble abode to smarter homes that function at the flick of our fingers. BY SHWETA KULKARNI
I
n the year 1999, a film titled Smart House was released by the Disney Channel Network, which showcased a fully automated dream house that functioned through a robot and a computer system. While the idea at that point seemed next to impossible, today a technologicallyadvanced house is not only becoming a new norm, but is also making our stressful lives simpler. “If your phones can get smarter every year, then why can’t your homes? If you can control a TV with a remote, why should you still have to get up to turn off the lights?” Quips interior decorator Apeksha Malhotra, who believes in converging technology with convenience. She says, “Thanks to technology, today, your home can easily do a lot of task for you, thus simplifying your lifestyle. Home automation is the ‘in’ thing; most of my clients demand designs that are in sync with technology.” Right from gadgets that can control many of our current home systems to apps that can

automatically unlock/lock doors and safeguard our home, today’s technology is making this possible at just the click of a button. “With a phone, tablet, or laptop in hand, homeowners can control the lights, temperature, household appliances, door locks and security systems in their homes, it is becoming as simple as that,” informs Malhotra. What is more comforting is the feeling of security that technology brings in. “A technologically-driven security system in your home helps you live life with a little less anxiety than usual. There are specially engineered safety locks that can be operated from your smartphones, which gives you complete control of who enters your house. There are apps by means of which you can look into your house remotely from anywhere in the world and monitor everything. There are plenty of these things that ensures that your home is safe when you aren’t around,” enlightens Malhotra. We pick up few products that certainly cannot be missed out from your smart home.

Time-saving tips to keep your home clean and clutter-free
Tidy Up Your
Cleaning at the same time every day can easily become a habit and subsequently seem like less of a chore. Similarly, scheduling when you clean will make it more likely to happen.
Home Cleaning
ROUTINE By Ashley Stephens
A
clean house takes time and effort – two things often in hot demand. And when it comes to cleaning versus doing, well, any other activity, anything else almost always wins. So how do you keep your home tidy without spending all your time doing it? Small changes to your cleaning routine can create time-saving habits and leave you with a clean house and happy home. The best way to keep a home clean is to clean it every day. While that might seem like a lot of work and not a novel idea, it decreases the large lumps of time you’ll have to spend soaking and scrubbing if you don’t do it every day. Ten minutes daily spent picking up or putting away and you may be surprised with how much cleaner your house looks and, consequently, how much easier it is to give it a good scrub.

By cleaning your mess as you go, you won’t need to devote additional time to cleaning later. Wipe up any cooking spills as they occur so that you’re not stuck with hard-to-clean buildup. Give your bathroom sink a quick swipe after every use to eliminate toothpaste or soap scum that easily accumulate. Adding in these quick and easy steps to your daily routine can save time in areas all around your home. Save yourself time by being deliberate with your time. By setting a timer for 10 or 15 minutes and using it every day to declutter will have your home tidy when it comes time to wash, wipe and vacuum. Cleaning at the same time every day can easily become a habit and subsequently seem like less of a chore. Similarly, scheduling when you clean will make it more likely to happen. Break your chores up into manageable parts and pick a day

to do them. Have time to dust on Tuesdays after work? Put it in your calendar. Sundays are open for floors? Mark it down and make it happen. Decide how often items around your home need to be cleaned and add it to your schedule. Consider what chores need to be done weekly, monthly or seasonally to save yourself from neglecting certain chores or cleaning before you need to. When it comes time to deep clean, choose a room or a floor to focus on each week; this way, it all gets done but it’s broken up into a manageable time frame.

Give everything a place. And more importantly, put things back in their place when you’re done with them. Freshen up your kitchen and bathroom by placing a dryer sheet in the bottom of your trash bins. This will ease spill cleanup and help minimize any odours. Dryer sheets can also come in handy for cleaning baseboards. Beyond their fresh smell, the fabric softener repels dust meaning you won’t need to clean as often. Use an old sock over your hand to dust as you de-clutter. It’s quick, easy, and cuts down on dedicated dusting later on. Make the most of your time by cleaning while you’re waiting. Dust your TV screen when commercials come on. Wipe down the stove while you’re microwaving your meal. As the cleaning experts at Sparkling Clean BC suggest, door mats are a necessity for the inside and outside of every entrance to your home. This will help lessen the amount of dirt and germs making their way inside your house. If vinegar isn’t already in your arsenal of household cleaners, it might be time to invest in a big bottle of the versatile liquid. It’s ability to clean just about anything makes it a cost-effective and ecofriendly alternative to closets full of costly cleansers. As a cleaning agent, vinegar can remove stains and smells from many hard-to-clean items around the house. Don’t want to waste time scrubbing the soap scum off your shower head? Tie a plastic bag filled with vinegar around the shower head and leave overnight before rinsing clean. Are your towels coming out of your laundry machine smelly musty? Run a hot rinse cycle with one cup of vinegar followed by a second cycle with a half-cup of baking soda to bring your fresh, fluffy towels back to life. If you’re lucky enough to have a dishwasher, use it to your advantage and let it wash more than just the dishes. A dishwasher can be used to clean a variety of items, many that are hard to clean otherwise, which will save you time and eliminate unwanted germs. The long list of items that can be tossed in include refrigerator shelves, range fan grills, light switch plates and small window screens. It may not sound like the most fun activity but by making the most out of the time you spend cleaning, it won’t seem like you’re wasting your day. Pick an upbeat playlist, create goals with exciting rewards and get your whole family involved. Spend less time cleaning your house and more time enjoying a tidy home.

If you’re not a fan of chilly water, Centennial Beach is the place for you. Besides its vast expanse of sandy beach, it also boasts shallow waters, which are said to be warmer than the other beaches in Vancouver. Located in Tsawwassen, Delta, Centennial Beach is also good for more than a nice swim or splash, you can also enjoy water sports, go beachcombing in its low tide pools or even try some birdwatching.
Looking for a more unusual spot? If you don’t mind cold water, give the 30 Foot Pool a try. Located in Lynn Canyon Valley, you are looking at a long climb up wooden stairs before you can access this swimming hole. You’ll be glad you did, however, when you catch a glimpse of some of the amazing views of the area. This natural swimming pool is also an ideal place to enjoy a picnic lunch after a swim in those pristine waters.

ow can anyone go wrong with the most basic items required for travelling? You have your passport, sunscreen, sneakers, camera, clothing and almost all of the basics covered, but dear traveler, travelling habits have evolved, as have technology and gear. Whether you are backpacking alone or taking a summer vacation with family or friends, your list of travel essentials will differ depending on the destination and your personal needs.
Dear traveler, the Swiss Army Knife is part of the standard kit for NASA astronauts, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be carrying one on your adventure. Whether you are breathing the great outdoors while camping or just travelling around the city, a Swiss army knife will be needed. Piece of advice – don’t leave it in your carry-on baggage in the airport – it will likely get confiscated.
Here is a list of some essential travel gear for that exciting upcoming holiday:

DARPAN TRAVEL Dry shampoo Saves you from all the hassle of blow-drying or air-drying your hair, when you should essentially just be busy exploring your surroundings. If you liked this idea, then you would probably want to explore more about the latest on-the-go shower products that include tooth powder and face/body wipes. Just in case you decide to skip a shower, these products can save you from the guilt and uneasiness. There are many options available in the market – pick the one that best suits your skin type.
Cash Yes we know ATM’s are in operation at almost every other corner, but emergency strikes when you least expect it. Popular backpacker Matt who has been travelling since 2006 mentions in his blog nomadicmatt.com, “I recommend having a stash of $200 USD for emergency situations. I don’t carry this money around, but leave it in my hotel room safe in case something happens. It will be useful if you get robbed or lose your wallet.”
Needless to say, make sure you have done the necessary research about the place such as weather conditions, public transport, and names of popular local dishes. One last tip tip – learn the basic phrases of the country – “hello,” “thank you,” “good bye,” – or download an app.
It is guaranteed that these will be taken into use almost every other day. Use these to separate the wet from dry, clean from not so clean, or just simply to seal a potentially leaky item.

Whether you are a backpacker or a picky eater travelling with a question mark about local meals or restaurants, protein bars can come in handy in those moments of cravings. Choose from a range of healthy options and devour this tiny snack that can be squeezed anywhere inside your luggage. “You don’t realize, but when you are on a holiday you’re on your feet for almost the entire day. Protein bars can give you an energy boost and they are light and easy to carry,” says sales and marketing employee Kavya Singh, who is a regular traveller in the Asian continent.
What NOT to carry: Jewellery/ Accessories: Avoid lugging these and save some space in your luggage for gifts or souvenirs.
Sharp objects Such as scissors, blades and knives. These are mostly banned on flights.
Cotton clothing It is wise to avoid carrying thick cotton clothing. They take time to dry and get wrinkled.

Extra shoes Felicia Jones, a student in London who recently went on her first backpacking trip to Spain, says, “I am a shoe person. It needs to be right with everything, but when I was in Spain it was nothing more than a burden on my shoulders. First Aid Kit Yes, I know this is the most basic and obvious of all travel essentials, but my list would be absolutely incomplete without the mention of a first aid kit. Also make sure you have taken the necessary vaccinations before boarding the flight. Visit www.phac-aspc.gc.ca to learn about the required vaccinations for each country as stated by the Canadian government.
Universal adapter cable Save on those crazy airport or ‘highly priced only for tourists’ commodities such as a universal adapter. Make sure you check what kind of plug the country uses, and if planning in advance, order a charger online. If you are carrying battery-operated devices, then bring extra batteries. Again, do not carry batteries in your carry-on luggage – it will get confiscated.

Bellingham in Washington State’s Whatcom County might be the Pacific Northwest’s best kept secret. To many living in southern B.C., the mention of Bellingham mostly conjures up images of Bellis Fair Mall, Costco, or Trader Joes. But in reality, just outside the big box retail strip lies an exploding craft beer movement, farm-to-table restaurants, boutique shopping opportunities and a vibrant arts environment. We pick some of the top hidden gems to discover this summer whether you’re visiting for a day or a week.

Fairhaven Founded over a century ago, the historic town of Fairhaven is adjacent to downtown Bellingham, located off the I-5 at Exit 250. There are a dozen buildings once used as saloons, grocery and drug stores, the oldest dating back to 1889, which have been restored, with some still being used for the same purposes. The town experienced a resurgence in the 1970s when a successful local businessman purchased the aging buildings that were originally set to be demolished.

Spectacular views of Bellingham Bay await those who choose to ride (or walk/run) along the South Bay Trail connecting Fairhaven to downtown Bellingham. Made up of gravel, boardwalk and concrete sections, the trail is easily accessible from several points in town, like right behind Fairhaven Bicycle (1108 11th St.) Another long-standing neighbourhood fixture, the shop sells bikes and apparel, offers repair services, and rents out all sorts of pedal vehicles. Rates start at $25 for four hours ‒ just enough time to take a cruiser downtown for a nibble, a little exploring and get back before dinner.
Two miles away, downtown Bellingham has its fair share of history as well. Starting out as the region’s political and business hub at the turn of the 20th century, the focus of late has shifted towards becoming a modern, sustainable entertainment destination (case in point: the former city hall turning into an art museum). Dining, drinking and immersing in cultural phenomena are favourite pastimes for visitors.

Drink beer Anyone who has a remote interest in the microbrew scene knows that craft beer has been enjoying an unprecedented popularity in the last few years. Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen (601 Holly St.) got in ahead of the curve by setting up shop in 2008. Owned and operated by Mari and Will Kemper, the duo have years of industry experience launching Thomas Kemper Brewery in nearby Bainbridge Island in 1984, and setting up brewpubs all over the United States. “We specialize in clean, crisp, German beers,” says Mari, although there are other varieties, some collaborations with different breweries, always on tap. Offering a full menu, a rotating “Locavore” section highlights meals using produce and meats sourced from the community ‒ a great example of this is Farmer Al’s Pickled Eggs, which come from chickens fed spent grains from the beer brewing process. In addition to Chuckanut, there are currently five more central watering holes serving up their own specialities, and a crop of new ones are on the way. You can find all the taprooms using the Bellingham Tap Trail (www. bellinghamtaptrail.com), a combined map, and passport, where enthusiasts collect stamps from participating venues to turn in for a prize.

t my current station in life, driving a luxurious executive sedan shouldn’t be a top priority — or at least, should rank well below two-seater sports cars or loud obnoxious sport bikes. However, my priorities seem to change whenever that sedan is emblazoned with a large leaping cat. I recently had the opportunity to test out the 2015 Jaguar XJL Portfolio AWD, the

L denoting the long wheelbase version of Jaguar’s full-size flagship four door. The car simply has to be seen, and sat in, to believe just how long it is: 5,252 millimetres in length, with 1,120 mm of rear legroom, which is 129 mm more than the standard wheelbase. The front half of the vehicle is all classic Jag. A signature contrasting mesh grill takes up most of the forward-facing real

estate, flanked by sharp xenon headlights. The blackened B pillars combined with the wraparound rear window give the XJL, in my opinion, one of its most distinct aesthetic feature in the floating roof. Silver split five-spoke 19-inch wheels complement the car nicely, especially in the Polaris White colour scheme of my press loaner. They could have been one-inch bigger to fill out the fenders a little more, but there’s always the option to either addon or move up to the V8 models for that. The interior is awash with buttery and cream-coloured perforated leather. If you haven’t fallen asleep after settling into the heated/cooled driver’s chair yet, activating the improved massage function with five settings should do the trick. Perhaps that is why the massive panoramic glass roof was installed, to bathe the driver in natural light. Or you could just turn up the 380-watt surround sound Meridian stereo

The 3.0 badge on the rear trunk lid gives away the fact that power comes from a 3.0-litre, 340 horsepower supercharged V6. The block is made from aluminum, to decrease weight. For the same reason, the body is also molded from composite aluminum and magnesium alloys. Coupled with the traction from the allwheel drive system and silky-smooth ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the “base” mill feels quick and lively. You might think Jaguar owners don’t care about fuel economy. And maybe they don’t, but I certainly do. All XJs come with a switchable engine start/stop function, and when matched with driving habits that occasionally demonstrate a degree of restraint, fuel economy numbers in the low teens is achievable. For instance, I was able to score an average 13.2 L/100 km. During my week with car, I endured “old man” comments more than once. And sure, with its limousine-like qualities, I get it. But it certainly didn’t feel like one on curvy roads. Besides giving lots of traction, the “instinctive” all-wheel drive is normally rear biased, sending lots of torque to the back two wheels for optimal handling. If any slip is detected, up to 50 per cent of the torque is sent back to the front. Although I drove the wheel in late spring, it’s nice to know there’s a winter mode that sets up the vehicle dynamics for maximum grip.

s soon as I opened the door to the 2015 Cadillac XTS I was to drive for the week, there it was on the polished metal door sill: PLATInUM. The highest of three “Collections,” or trim levels, that descriptor said it all for this front-or-all-wheel drive, fullsize luxury sedan. Visual items like the satin-chrome grille finish, LeD-illuminated door handles, big 20-inch wheels, and sparkly pearl paint named White Diamond Tricoat - all not-so-subtley hint at the high-class status of this vehicle. even that is luxurious: shaped like the company’s shield emblem, there’s a hefty weight to it and the remote features a rubber face that feels nice to the touch and is easy to grip and operate. It’s the same story on the inside. With the Platinum models, almost every interior surface is clad in stitched leather, and the headliner is covered in microfibre suede. Six different colour combinations are available, and my press vehicle came with a classy Dark Urban/Cocoa (brown/beige) configuration. Some consumers, new or returning to the brand, may not realize how high-tech Caddys have gotten. For example, the instrument cluster is completely digitized (optional), something that is still a rarity amongst mainstream offerings and usually reserved for european nameplates like Jaguar or Audi. Rather than the familiar speedo and tach, a reconfigurable 12.3-inch screen can be set to four different modes displaying varying amounts of vehicle information. new for 2015 is the addition of the OnStar concierge service and 4g LTe connectivity with WIFi support, continuing gM’s push to turn every one of their models into a rolling Internet hub. of media format, including up to 10 Bluetooth device pairings, and the eight-inch LCD display has a neat proximity sensor so it hides visual clutter until it detects your hand nearby. Continuing with the topic of technology, the Cadillac XTS makes use of Magnetic Ride Control. The shock absorbers are electronically controlled and can adapt to changing road conditions within five milliseconds, altering dampening so that ride comfort and handling are always at an optimal level. For such a large footprint, the car carves corners surprisingly well. The standard mill in the model is a 3.6-litre V6, producing 304 horspower and 264 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty, but I tested the twinturbo Vsport version of the engine (all-wheel drive only) that cranks out a monstrous 410 hp and 369 lb-ft, both matched up with a sixspeed automatic transmission. The lightweight composite intake manifold construction and integrated cylinder head and exhaust manifold design are a couple of ways engineers have managed to keep the pounds in the front down, helping keep the feeling of balance on the big sedan I alluded to earlier. Safety features abound on the XTS equipped with appropriate packages: rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, automatic braking, and new lane keep assist on FWD models, to name a few. One of my favourites is the safety alert seat that gave me a good scare when I was backing into a parking spot with a high concrete curb. The computer warned me about a possible collision by vibrating the cushion, but what I didn’t realize was just how strong the motor underneath is. I’ll take that over a scratched bumper any day.

DODGE CHARGER egularly driving different cars in this line of work, I sometimes momentarily forget which one I’m currently in on the road. Most recently, I was quickly reminded while cruising down the highway when drivers around me started slowing down because of the particular vehicle I was piloting that week: the face-lifted Dodge Charger. It’s not by coincidence that many police forces in north America choose the Charger to be in their fleets. Although the model I had wasn’t the common protective services favourite, a black V8, my 3.6-litre V6 press vehicle adequately demonstrated desir-

able qualities like intimidating looks, lots of modern technology and surprisingly decent handling. Dodge calls this year’s revision a “full-body” makeover – inspired by a certain 1969 predecessor – involving a new hood, new fenders, new front and rear lighting, the list goes on and on. For 2015, there are no less than nine different trims and four different engine choices available to pick from – mine was the SXT Rallye AWD. Subtlety isn’t a strong suit of the Charger’s, especially one dipped in the hot Redline Tri-Coat Pearl paint colour. The front fascia is a mishmash of

design details, with a reworked “crosshair” grille and elongated daytime running LeDs outlining the revised HID headlamps. Moving around the exterior, the C pillar has been pushed back to give a more dramatic roof slope, and an available three-piece lip spoiler now gently rests on top of the rear quarter panels and trunk. Speaking of the latter, the trunk lid is sizeable, and with no power option, attempting a single-armed close can prove to be an unnecessarily challenging task. Reinforcing the strength in numbers philosophy, there are 18 other interior surface and trim combinations for the cabin in addition to my Black/Ruby Red scheme with the sport leather seats. A new thick, three-spoke steering wheel and T-handle shifter soon gets anyone into muscle car mode. Chrysler’s Uconnect Access with WiFi hotspot and mobile app connectivity, part of the eponymous infotainment system, has also been included in the SXT lineup. The Rallye group is equipped with the 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine that makes 300 HP and 264 lb-ft of torque. Packaged with a sport exhaust, it at least makes V8 sound, if not power. The real story with this model range though is the all-wheel drive system. I admit fuel economy was a concern of mine given the powertrain, but my consumption average of 13.5 L/100 km in mixed city and highway driving is not as bad as I would have predicted. The AWD has an automatic axle disconnect function that decouples the front axle from the rear when full grip isn’t required, cutting down on gas burned yet retaining the fun, rearwheel characteristics in non-slippery road conditions. Finally, Dodge added a slew of safety features as part of the refresh: autonomous braking, which slows or completely stops the vehicle in possible frontal collision situations; lane departure warning with lane keep assist that will alert and assist the driver if he or she drifts outside lane markers; and onebutton emergency services contact, built into Uconnect Access.

he term “hot hatch” is thrown around so much nowadays that it’s sometimes difficult to remember the origin of the term. every few years or so, Volkswagen reminds us by releasing a new gTI, like the seventh generation version of the famous hatchback initially introduced this time last year. I wouldn’t fault you if at first glance you can’t discern the differences between the redesigned Mk VII and the one previous.

The great thing about Volkswagen is that the majority of their vehicles retain an identifiable family lineage as you look at the offerings throughout the years, rather than choosing to reinvent the wheel each time. The hood is more raked, and it’s grown in size a little (53.3 millimetres in length, 12.7 mm in width), but the car has still managed to shed some weight – approximately 37 kilograms – a commendable feat in today’s automotive world. My press car was the 2015 gTI Autobahn 5 Door in Carbon Steel Metallic, which includes some extras like a big panoramic sunroof. There are several references to past gTI glory like a red stripe that runs across the bi-xenon headlights and red accent stitching in the interior. The rooftop mast antenna didn’t make the cut, unfortunately, replaced by a stubby “diversity” antenna. My vehicle came with the Leather Package ($1,095) black sport seats and, while nice, don’t hold the same kind of emotional appeal as the “Clark” plaid covering.

The whole thing about the original hot hatches was their ability to be pedestrian and practical when you needed those qualities, and then turn around and put a grin on your face when the road opened up. The current gTI does that, and in an elegant, grown up manner – at night, soft ambient lighting greets you when you open the door to sit inside; there’s plenty of legroom to go around: 1,046 mm in the front and 903 in the back; a 5.8” touchscreen handles your entertainment and route-planning needs ($695 Technology Package). The graphics look dated, but the system is intuitive and quick compared to units found in other makes. now for the good stuff. Power delivery comes by way of a 210-horsepower TSI engine with 258 lb-ft of torque, greater than the Mk VI by 10 hp and 51 lb-ft. The seventh-gen is built on an all-new platform, making it stronger, lighter and more rigid than ever before. Throw in the lowered sport suspension and bigger anti-roll bars that the gTI receives over standard golf models, and you have one quick, well-handling machine. The gTI was never about overwhelming, raw performance, but the plain ol’ fun driving experience. You’ll understand when you sit in the supportive bucket seat, place your hands on the D-shaped steering wheel and downshift into a corner by giving a quick tug on the six-speed DSg’s paddle shifter. The substantially increased torque that this 2.0liter turbo mill makes comes on at a low 1,600 rpm, causing quick, full-on acceleration. Long live the hot hatch. The 2015 Volkswagen gTI Autobahn 5 Door starts at $34,295.

And, as it turns out, it’s also a great place to stage a sport utility vehicle launch. I know what you’re thinking – an SUV in Miami? Really? not just any SUV, however, but Honda’s brand new subcompact crossover, the HR-V. It will introduce a new generation of buyers to the Honda brand,” says Jean Marc Leclerc, vice president of auto sales and marketing, who referred to the HR-V as the “most powerful new weapon in the light truck arsenal.” Honda, along with a handful of other manufacturers like Mercedes with the gLA and most-recently Mazda and their

Size-wise, the HR-V (2,610 millimetre wheelbase) is neatly nestled in-between the Fit (2,350 mm) and the CR-V (2,620 mm), and aimed at singles, dual income no kids couples, and empty nesters wanting a fun, sophisticated ride that doesn’t compromise versatility. Hayato Mori, senior product planning and business development senior manager, calls the latest offering a mix of a coupe, SUV and minivan, taking the best traits of all three. Indeed, on the outside, the blacked-out headlight-grille combo and hidden rear door handles give it an instant sporty appeal; the slightly raised stance and fender flares suggest weekends driving to mountain bike trails; and the wide tailgate and cargo area says “Take me on Costco runs.” Miami’s twisted highways, long, beachfront straightaways, and urban roads provided a great testing ground
DARPAN AutoFEATURE for this vehicle-of-all-trades. Accompanied by two driving companions, I took first shift behind the wheel. The heart beating underneath the hood of the HR-V is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTeC engine pumping out 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the trim (LX/eX/eX-L navi), you can have front or all-wheel drive with a continuously variable transmission or sixspeed manual transmission (base LX and eX only). During the presentation, Mori mentioned that one of the many goals of the design was to strike a balance between fuel economy and power output. Two-wheel drive variants with the CVT are the gas thriftiest of the bunch, netting an estimated 7.6 L/100 km of combined highway and city driving. With the six-speed, consumption rises a little, to 8.3 L/100 km. Finally, the all-wheel drive with the CVT holds a middle average of 8.1 L/100 km. Taking out a manual eX, I was delighted at how crisp the shifts felt. The manner in which the lever satisfyingly clicks into each gear is reminiscent of Honda’s racier models like the Civic Si. Handling definitely feels more car than van or even regular-sized crossover-like, something that was thoroughly evaluated during an emergency manoeuvre initiated entering an onramp to avoid a confused motorist. The four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake distribution are also excellent. A unique feature is the auto brake hold, operated by a switch underneath the electronic parking brake on the centre console. When on, the driver is free to take his or her foot off the pedal and the brakes will continue to be automatically held until the accelerator is tapped. even during our short stint with Metropolitan gridlock, it proved its usefulness. As a passenger on the return drive, I revelled in the 998 mm of rear legroom, while playing with the second row Magic Seat – identical to the one found in the Fit – which allows for a variety of folded configurations to accommodate large or oddly-shaped objects. For instance, a surfboard can be squeezed in when you activate what Honda has named “Long Mode,” where you tilt both the front and rear passenger seat at the same time. Folding both rear seats is known to as “Utility Mode,” yielding a maximum 1,665 litres (1,631 if AWD) of carrying capacity. There’s even a “Tall Mode” where the base of the rear seat flips up to make room for something like a potted plant. The 2016 Honda HR-V is built in Celaya, Mexico, and goes on sale this summer. Pricing starts at $20,690.

Actor-singer, Shruti Haasan in a candid conversation with Shweta Kulkarni talks about dealing with success and failure.

t is often assumed that star kids have an easy ride to stardom. However, looking at Shruti Haasan’s career graph one can definitely defy that conviction. With illustrious parents like Kamal Haasan and Sarika, one expected Shruti to pass the Friday test with flying colours. However, much to everyone’s disbelief, her Bollywood debut – Luck proved to be a box-office dud. Even down south, she failed to leave an impression in the initial days. Shruti continued to receive flak until she silenced her naysayers with her performances in films like Anaganaga O Dheerudu, 7th Sense, 3, and D-Day. Now with her recently-released Bollywood film, Gabbar Is Back, striking gold at the box-office and reaching the coveted 100 crore mark, the effervescent actor can easily claim that she has finally arrived, but instead she says, “There is still a long way to go, and a lot to learn.” Excerpts from our tête-à-tête with the actor, singer, musician and songwriter rolled into one – Shruti Haasan. Success took its own sweet time; however, weren’t you disheartened by so many negative reviews and failures in the beginning of your career? Did you ever feel it was the end of the road for you? To be honest, yes I was depressed. But I also knew that I had it in me, and all I needed to do was work harder. I also believe everything happens for a reason. If I had experienced success at that point, perhaps I would not have been able to handle it. Now that I have struggled for it, it matters and it just makes you humble. These failures taught me to rejoice the success of films more. I was not a great actor when I entered the industry, but I am a good actor now. I was not deterred because I am someone who believes in getting better. One thing that is commendable about you is that you never asked for any help from your father – the legendary Kamal Haasan, who could have easily produced a film for you or pulled some strings to have sever-

I did not want my dad to help me because then it would have been too easy. I mean, my parents are there to support me and advice me whenever I need it, but any achievements I have had in my life so far, have been my own. And they are very happy about it. People would come and easily sign you up because you are Kamal Haasan’s daughter, but if you, as an actor fail to leave an impact and impress the audience then what is the point. I am proud of my lineage, but I never really depended on it. I do believe that even as parents, separate of being Kamal and Sarika, they are proud that I have done it on my own. And that’s something I am happy about. I might have taken a long time to achieve what I have, but I am okay with that because it is my journey and that is important. In Gabbar Is Back you share screen space with none other than the Khiladi of Bollywood – Akshay Kumar. Did you ever fear being overshadowed by him, especially given that he has a very strong screen presence and the film is centered on him? My prominence in a film has never mattered to me much, what matters to me is that whatever little I have in the film, I make an impact with that too. In D-Day, I was there for just 12 minutes, but in those 12 minutes, I ensured that I am putting my best foot forward, and people did notice that. The length of your character or who you are with doesn’t matter as long as you leave an impact in those five minutes or even 10 seconds that you are there. The movie has a very strong message and takes drastic measures towards corruption in our society, what is your take on it? As actors our job is to entertain the audience and through that process if we can send across a message then why not? Having said that, I would also say that what Gabbar does in the film is very drastic, very great and at the same time very sinister, and the film is definitely not preaching to take the law in your hands. What we should take back from this film is that we should identify the corruption and refuse to be a part of it. Talking about singing, you have a strong inclination towards music. You’re a musician, you write songs and you have been singing since you were a kid… Music is an intrinsic part of me. I have even studied music and have been singing since I was a

Film’s leading lady Kareena Kapoor said at a press conference, “When I read the script, I was so touched that I had to sign the film. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a very special film. What I really like about the film is the way it deals with various human emotions. The film will also show Salman in a new light. I think it is his best till date.” Talking about the story of the film, writer-director Kabir Khan said, “It is a very positive story, it is a story that is trying to deal with certain negative politics that all of us are victim of. The film in a nice heartwarming, humorous, and engaging manner deals with this politics and sorts it out.”

ominated by some ‘massy’ entertainers, the coming months promise a hell lot of ‘action’. Riding alongside the festival of Eid is the much-awaited Salman Khan starrer — Bajrangi Bhaijaan, while the independence weekend is booked by Dhrama productions’ largest release this year — Brothers. Also ruling the screens will be another Khan — Saif Ali Khan with his Phantom. While the thrill quotient this season is high, satires like Bangistan balance the dosage of ‘action’ by bringing to fore some witty comedy.

Releasing date: August 28 Directed by: Kabir Khan Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif
After his adventurous ride with Bajrangi Bhaijaan, director Kabir Khan will gear up for his second release this year – Phantom, where he once again delves into his pet subject – terrorism. Set in the Mumbai city post the 26/11 terror attacks, the film revolves around Indian agents working to combat global terrorist outfits. This will be director Kabir Khan’s fourth film dealing with terrorism and spies after Kabul Express, New York and Ek Tha Tiger. “The killing of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad provided a perfect sense of closure for Americans after 9/11. In my film, I have tried to recreate that similar feeling for our countrymen,” said Kabir Khan. The film stars Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan in leading roles, and is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala.

Directed by debutant director Karan Anshuman, the film stars Riteish Deshmukh and Pulkit Samrat, and narrates a tale of two terrorists, who are on a mission to change the world but constantly keep making blunders. “The film is hilarious; audience will be laughing throughout the film. Whenever Riteish and Pulkit’s characters indulge in terrorism (by way of planting bombs etc), everything goes wrong. I play a Bangladeshi who comes to India from Poland. The highlight of my role is that I have seven different get-ups,” said actor Chandan Roy Sanyal.

Even though biopics are the surest way to get on the Academy’s good side, films about boxing are also bound to get some recognition (Rocky, Raging Bull, The Fighter). Jake Gyllenhaal goes for his second Oscar nomination as Billy Hope, a light heavyweight champion whose life goes on a tailspin following the violent death of his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams). Hope’s erratic behaviour costs him the title and the custody of his daughter and is forced to start from zero to recuperate some of his losses. The testosterone-heavy drama comes from writer Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) and director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), so don’t expect any cuddles.
t’s the dog days of summer. The heavy-hitters have come and gone. Some delivered (Mad Max: Fury Road), some came way short (Tomorrowland). Yet, there is two more months to go. It’s around this time when the odd ducks come out, including a couple of Oscar hopefuls.

Magic Mike XXL
The fact that there are two wildly successful TV shows inspired by the adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Elementary and Sherlock) proves the audience’s interest in Arthur Conan Doyle’s signature character. In this incarnation, the infallible detective is retired and battling early-stage dementia. This doesn’t stop him from revisiting the single unsolved case of his distinguished career. Ian McKellen reunites with his Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon for this novel approach to the classic character.
A follow-up to the unexpectedly successful Steven Soderbergh’s 2012 film, this sequel leans towards the fun aspects of the original while bringing down the drama to a minimum. Three years after retirement, Mike (Channing Tatum) reunites with most of his band of strippers for a road trip, leading to a blowout final show where everything started.

Sinister 2
Releasing date: August 21 Of the many low-budget haunted-house horror movies of late, Sinister was one of the most accomplished. Not only did Sinister provide plenty of jolts and gave new life to an old gimmick, it also landed filmmaker Scott Derrickson a gig in the Marvel Universe as the director of Doctor Strange. Derrickson is back as screenwriter for the sequel, in which the mischievous spirit Mr. Boogie terrorizes a single mother and her two sons on a rural setting. At least this time the deputy officer from the previous movie may be able to prevent the carnage.
Shaun the Sheep Releasing date: August 8
The makers of Wallace and Gromit have another stop-motion franchise under their sleeve: Shaun the Sheep. Since the character’s first filmic outing became a runaway hit across the Atlantic, distributors thought this would be a good moment to introduce Shaun to American and Canadian audiences (it worked with Paddington). The sheep in question is the youngest and smartest of the herd. When an unconscious farmer and Shaun’s mates land in the big city by mistake, it’s up to Shaun to re-establish the status quo. There is not a lick of dialogue in the film, so should be a blast for younger viewers.
Straight Outta Compton An interesting choice for a major studio release. Straight Outta Compton tells the story on N.W.A, the seminal hip-hop group that popularized gangsta rap and spawned Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. The film focuses on the band’s early years, as the group turned their experiences living in California’s most dangerous neighbourhood into veritable anthems for the disenfranchised. Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson, will be playing his dad in the movie.
Irrational Man Releasing date: July 24
Woody Allen got some of the worst reviews of his career with last year’s Magic in the Moonlight. Based on the reception of his latest film in Cannes, he seems to be on the rebound. Irrational Man follows a suicidal philosophy professor who finds a new lease in life… by planning a murder (did I mention this is a comedy?) Allen brings back Emma Stone from the Moonlight debacle and pairs her with first-timers Joaquin Phoenix and Parker Posey. Early reviews compare Irrational Man to late Allen masterpiece Match Point.

How do you see the growth of the healthcare sector worldwide?
What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs or youngsters hoping to follow your path?
Healthcare has changed over the past five years with the help of technology, modern day medicine, specialized doctors and advancements in tertiary care. People now live on average at least 10 years longer than they did back in the 70’s and 80’s and medical advances have brought many breakthroughs and improvements in patient care. The future of the healthcare sector will see increasing trends in more patients because the number of individuals arriving at age 65 will increase dramatically as more patients will be living longer. More advanced technology will see improved treatments, less risks and extend lives. In the long-run, the increase in the number of patients will lead to a great demand for practitioners; nurse practitioners, generalist physicians, and specialty physicians in the management of certain diseases and determine the best utilization of each. As medical care advances, costs are bound to increase, thus leading to increasing costs of healthcare insurances. Healthcare worldwide is positive thinking and I always see the glass half full. Secondly, I have a mentor; Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil – Managing Director of VPS Healthcare Group, the group that owns Burjeel Hospital, who has given me the freedom to take decisions that I believe are correct. It is very easy to work in such situation.” Po’s journey has been very rewarding so far. “When you see the smile on all the faces of the patients who have gone through a surgery or difficult moments in their lives, that for me is more rewarding,” says the CEO, whose hospital often offers free surgeries for patients who cannot afford it. Besides, the success and recognition of Burjeel Hospital is defi-
There is no short cut to success. The harder you work, the luckier you get. What advice would you give immigrants?
Immigrants fortunately have no option. They have only one way to success – work hard or perish. Again my advice would remain the same – work hard and you will succeed. Indians around the world have to their immigrated countries, what do you think of this accomplishment?
Like most immigrants – Indians too work hard in their adopted countries. The fact remains that the work ethic of Indians is wellknown and therefore are preferred as employees. Additionally, we speak multiple languages and are hardworking, intelligent professional and well-educated. I believe that most countries, especially the GCC, would not have been able to achieve whatever success they have achieved in such a short time without the help of the Indian Immigrant population. nitely a reward for Po. “In two years, where Burjeel was not even known, today anywhere we go, if I say I’m from Burjeel Hospital, they say, ‘Oh it’s that 7-star hospital from Abu Dhabi.’” As CEO, Po is also currently overseeing the expansion of the Burjeel brand in Abu Dhabi which includes the Burjeel Medical Center and other upcoming projects in and around Abu Dhabi. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21) The winds of change are in the air, Sagittarius. Can you feel that shift in your innermost being? You’re moving into a time of tremendous personal understanding. Meaningful conversations with others can be life-changing and pivotal now (big stuff, seriously!). You’re willing to go to great lengths to connect with mentors and teachers and seek the knowledge you desire. Key relationships both personal and professional, might go through a few growing pains. You’re getting more in touch with your value system. If others don’t appreciate your position or are not willing to see things from your point of view, you’re likely to make a stand. This might come as a surprise to others since they’re accustomed to you being so easy-going. Lucky days: July 26, 27, 28 August 23, 24 Challenging days: July 12, 13 August 8, 9
cAPRIcoRN (Dec. 22-JAN. 19) Key relationships and one-to-one encounters with others become a strong focus, Capricorn. You’re encouraged to thoroughly examine your own position in relationships (business and personal alike), and also consider the needs and motivations of the other party. The more aware you are of your intentions, the better the working dynamic between yourself and others (your moral compass is becoming more refined). If you already have a strong personality, others might find you intimidating, so throw a little sugar on your words. On the other hand, if you’re more reserved by nature, you’re more likely to stand up for your ambitions. Regardless of your demeanor, if there are any glass ceilings to push through, this is the time to do it. Lucky days: July 1, 2, 29, 30 | August 25, 26 Challenging days: July 14, 15 | August 10, 11, 12
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-Feb. 18) You’re ready to get more organized across the board, Aquarius. This is an excellent time for upgrading or on-the-job training. It’s also a great time to pick up some extra shifts and get a second job if need be. Make hay while the sun shines right? Even though you’re going to be busy this summer, you’re still going to find some time to play. Workplace romances as well as festivities with colleagues will make things that much more exciting. Married Aquarians are receptive to their partner’s needs making this a good time for communication. Major joint decisions such as tying the knot, or purchasing property together are likely. Your Aquarian freedomloving nature is ready for some down-home commitment. Lucky days: July 3, 4, 31 | August 1, 27, 28 Challenging days: July 1, 27. 28 | August 13, 14
PISceS (Feb. 19-MARch 20) It’s an inspired and sensual summer ahead, Pisces! This is a cosmically-charged time for all forms of creativity and selfexpression. Put aside some time for your artistic hobbies and your personal interests. If others want to join in, hey, the more the merrier! However, if by your efforts to support others you push your own interests to the side, you might not reap the true benefits of this time (don’t forget your boundaries, Pisces). The desire to get outside and commune with nature will also be strong this summer. Mars is making a sweet aspect to your sign, making you feel more energetic and enthusiastic. Your libido is running quite high too! You are likely to attract a lover where there’s a powerful physical chemistry. Enjoy! Lucky days: July 5, 6, 7 | August 2, 3, 29, 30 Challenging days: July 19, 20 | August 15, 16, 17

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: The biggest obstacle that I faced so far in Canada was finding a job. If one makes good use of the available resource, then finding a job is not very difficult. It may take some time but it is not impossible.

Getting Here: With the aim of exploring better career opportunities and providing an excellent environment for their daughter, Yashaswini, Mayank and Pushpanjali Rai migrated to Canada from India in 2014. As soon as they arrived in Calgary, Alberta, they lived in a hotel for a few days. Having lived in Calgary, one of the coldest cities in Canada, for almost nine months now, the couple state

their first impressions of Canada to be that of a developed country with a cold climate. However, though it was a cold city and a new place with people belonging from different communities, Mayank points out that neither his family nor he faced any major problems settling down in Canada. “As there were excellent settlement services for new arrivals, we did not face any difficulties when we moved here,” he explains. Finding a job, however, was a bit challenging for Mayank. Yet, it did not discourage him; in fact, he looks at that experience in a positive manner. “I learnt a lot of new and helpful things during this process,” says Mayank. According to Mayank, there is one thing a person must absolutely carry along with himself or his family when migrating to Canada or any other country outside their own – and that is a positive attitude.
