DARPAN 1 Four vaccines have been approved in
In comparison, blood clots occur in one in 20 patients hospitalized with COVID19, and one in 100 patients who have COVID19 but were not hospitalized. It is safe to say that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in protecting people from COVID19 and its complications far outweigh the risks.
Canada - AztraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer & Moderna - how does the approval process work? Can people choose which vaccine they want to take? When a company wishes to have a vaccine approved for use in Canada, the company has to submit extensive trial data from at least three phases: laboratory, initial and extended human trials. The data must include efficacy data, safety, risk and side effect profiles. This is then reviewed thoroughly and extensively by a tribunal of Canadian scientists who specialise in the field. Once the vaccine is deemed to be safe and effective based on a pre-set list of protocols and guidelines, it is then given approval to be used in Canada in treatment of patients at the discretion of Provincial Health Ministries. Of the four COVID19 vaccines approved for use in Canada people do not have a choice on which vaccine they receive. The vaccine available for use is based on actual physical availability, transportation and storage options. The vaccine roll out programs are created by the Provincial Health Ministry based on these complex logistics that are often out of their control. I have no hesitations equally recommending all four vaccines to my patients. 2 What can we expect in terms of shipment
and procurement of the vaccine?
Canada signed pre-procurement contracts with multiple vaccine manufacturers totaling 100’s of millions of doses, so that we would have ample access to vaccines. Pfizer and Moderna were the first to achieve approval status and started to ship vaccine in late December 2020 and early January 2021. AstraZeneca started delivery in March 2021. These companies had initial difficulty in meeting all their production contract commitments. Bad weather across North America in early 2021 also disrupted delivery timetables. Recently the companies have been able to exceed their delivery expectations and Canada is receiving greater than one million vaccine doses per week since March 15, 2021. This is expected to increase in the coming months as all approved manufacturers increase their production capacity further. 3 How effective is each vaccine and what

age groups is it targeting? Should people worry about side effects?
There is a difference between the published trial laboratory efficacy rates and real world effectiveness. Laboratory efficacy rates can be different because they are impacted by who is enrolled in the study, the size of the study group and what end points the scientists are looking at. Real world effectiveness is more important and valuable to us. In real world use all four vaccines have been equally effective at reducing the risk of death (100%), serious illness (95%) and hospitalisations (95%). These are the important end points that we need to avoid with any illness, and in the case of COVID19, avoiding these end points will allow us to safely open up our communities and get life back to normal social routines. Typical side effects seen include injection site pain, tenderness, swelling and redness, as well as general fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, chills, nausea and fever. These side effects are a sign your immune system is building up a response. They typically resolve within 24-48 hours, and can be reduced with the use

5 How will interactions work with people who are vaccinated and those who aren’t?
After vaccination, it is advised to continue wearing our masks, maintaining physical distancing and hand hygiene measures. We can relax these public health measures only with our immediate household, who we know are not infectious. In all other situations we need to follow these measures strictly until everyone is vaccinated. 6 Do people still need to follow COVID-19 protocol after being vaccinated?
In real world use all four vaccines have been equally effective at reducing the risk of death (100%), serious illness (95%) and hospitalizations (95%). I have no hesitations equally recommending all four vaccines to my patients."

of Acetaminophen. More serious side effects are rare, but can include severe allergic reaction to a vaccine component leading to difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, fast heart rate, rash and dizziness. These may happen within 15 minutes of vaccination; hence it is important to stay within medical supervision for 15 minutes immediately after vaccination occurs. All vaccination centres have trained staff available to handle any emergency situations that may arise to ensure patient safety. 4 There has been a lot of controversy with regards to the AstraZeneca vaccine being linked to blood clots. The latest news is that it is not linked to blood clots. How can people be assured that the AstraZeneca shot is safe?
As more and more people are being vaccinated across the world, a lot of data is being collected and monitored. In Europe, it was noticed that14 days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine some patients showed an increase in the incidence of cerebral vein thrombosis (blood clots in the brain). There were 37 such cases in a total of 17 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine in Europe. Vaccinations were halted. After further data analysis to ensure patient safety, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has declared that there was no clear evidence of increased risk of blood clots from the vaccine.
DARPAN
TM
Yes, everyone needs to continue to follow COVID19 protocols until the vast majority of people are vaccinated and the numbers of COVID virus circulating in the community is reduced. We will see a reduction of transmission with increasing vaccinations as the transmission lines are cut. Real world data shows that there is a 90 per cent reduction in transmission in virus after vaccination. 7 How effective are vaccines against variants?
The various vaccines have varying degrees of effectiveness against the multiple variants. All four approved vaccines have shown to be moderately effective against the variants present in Canada currently. It is a race against time to get more people vaccinated before more variants start to spread or more virulent variants get created, hence the need to continue to follow the Public Health protocols. 8 Is the vaccine safe for expectant mothers?
The initial vaccine trials did not have any pregnant women in their studies, so we did not have that data before. Current real world data shows that it is safe for expectant mothers to get vaccinated after the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. We now also have data to show that newborn babies born to women who were vaccinated during their pregnancy also have antibodies to fight COVID19 which is great. 9 Ontario has entered a third wave, should BC be preparing for it as well? How will vaccines play a role in that?
Any jurisdiction that has not respected the ability of the COVID19 virus to spread and has opened up too fast prior to seeing significant reductions in new cases arising has had to deal with an increase in infections. Also, keep in mind that the new variants are at least 60 per cent more transmissible and hence more infectious. Ontario is going into its third wave. We could see the same if we do not follow our Public Health protocols here. We are seeing a gradual creep up in the daily number of positive infections being reported.
Will we ever see a return to normalcy once large groups of people are vaccinated?
10
Simply, YES! It is a race against time to get more people vaccinated before more virus spreads. In BC, we seem to be ahead of our current age-based vaccination schedule. We will get further ahead as more essential frontline workers get vaccinated in the second stream of vaccination that is starting in parallel with the age-based stream. very Indian girl at some point in her life has had to face these questions - “when do you plan to get married? You are next in line for marriage. How excited are you?” These questions are thrown at a girl not just by her parents but from the gossip craving aunties, neighbours, and everyone whether they are related or not related to the girl. Well, author Sonia Lalli took the exact situation that several girls as the storyline for her latest book, Serena Singh Flips the Script. But there’s a slight twist in the story - the protagonist

of the book Serena is in her mid-thirties who is proving to her traditional parents that she does not want “domestic bliss.” However, when Serena’s younger sister and best friend announces that she’s pregnant and gets too busy for her; Serena finally admits to herself that she is lonely. She has let all of her close friendships fall by the wayside and convinces herself, rightly or wrongly, that it’s because she focused on her career while the other women made more conventional life choices. As an Indian who grew up in her hometown in Saskatoon, we asked Sonya if the story was based on her personal experiences. To which, the author responds, “The idea came to me when I moved to a new city and was finding it difficult to make new friends. When people around you are moving ahead in life and you are not there yet, you get into a tough spot. Personally, my family has been extremely supportive and has always been my backbone in whatever I have done. But as a South Asian, I know Indian women often have to face a lot of
pressure when it comes to getting married, and when they choose not to, it stirs an even bigger problem.” Getting a book published is not a bed of roses, especially when it is in the middle of a pandemic. Telling us a little about the way Serena Singh Flips the Script was published, Sonya mentions that she first submitted the proposal to her editor after which the first draft was submitted in 2020. “It

was both an exciting and nervous time for me to publish the book during these Covid times,” Sonya shares. A romance-writer, Sonya’s debut novel The Matchmaker’s List was a runaway hit. But when quizzed about writing as a profession, she says, “I started my career as a lawyer from Columbia University in New York. But my career trajectory changed after I completed an MA in Creative Writing and Publishing at City, at the University of London. When I started off as a writer, it took me a long time to actually get started, understand the process, and get my first book published. From developing the idea, getting it approved by a publisher, edit rounds, etc.” Both her books have a South Asian as a protagonist and Sonia tells us why she did so. “We find a lot of stories from all over the world. It is extremely heartwarming when women come forward and say they love the story, or they could relate to it,” she smiles. Having explored the Indian culture and society in her books, Sonya mentioned that genderbiased and differences should most certainly change in our society, “Even though we have made so much progress when it comes to our mindset and vision, gender differences are one thing that must change in our society,” she signs off.
I love reading my books on my balcony especially in summer.

The
POWER of WOMEN By Petrina D’Souza

he strength of a woman is invincible; her courage has no bounds and her resilience is limitless. Infact, women’s rights activist Nellie McClung once said: “Never underestimate the power of a woman.” For most of us, women have played an integral role at every phase in our lives – be it our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives or female peers – they have influenced our thoughts, continuously supported our dreams, and given us a hand when we were unable to rise. Today, women are at the forefront of change. They are ruling nations; they are the key decision-makers; they have taken charge and are creating their own roadmap to success. As we celebrate International’s Women’s Day in March, DARPAN honours these empowering women – we

In British Columbia, there are so many remarkable South Asian women who are leaders in their respective fields. Be it in politics, health, social work, business, or broadcasting – their contribution has been crucial for the growth and development of the province
and BC’s South Asian community. These brilliant women have strived to reach their goals; they have shattered the glass ceiling to turn their dreams into reality. They have not let anyone hold them back – and that is our message for young South Asian women and girls who have big dreams. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back! To me being a woman means bringing equal parts intellect and empathy to everything I do, personally and professionally.

What has been your biggest achievement in 2020, personally and professionally? My proudest business achievement to date has been the role I am playing in helping Canadians get access to healthcare where and when they need it most, especially during these particularly challenging times. I have long been
COVER STORY exploring the critical role of virtual care in the sustainability of our healthcare system. I recognized the need for innovative virtual health care tools before the pandemic and as such, picked the right team to work with me to develop TELUS’ Consumer Health strategy to address these issues and launched Babylon by TELUS Health in 2019. That vision and subsequent execution helped put TELUS Health in the position we are in now, with our virtual care services being downloaded every 30 seconds and supporting millions of families across Canada. We provide the fastest-growing and highest patient-rated virtual care service in the country, and for that I am very proud. As one of the only women leading a virtual health care business from end to end in the country it’s particularly significant to me. Our success has reinforced my confidence that we will continue to play a major role in revolutionizing access to healthcare for years to come.
Q
Who inspires you to do better each day?
First it’s my mom – she inspires me to do better each day. My family is a major source of inspiration and support and I am truly forever grateful for them. Second, Chardi Kala – this refers to a state of mind where a fearless, brave and optimistic attitude is maintained, even in the most daunting of circumstances. My success mantra is to maintain a Chardi Kala mindset.
Q
What’s your advice for women who wish to follow your path? Lift while you climb. Bring other women and BIPOC leaders with you on your journey. When you are in a position of authority make the decisions you know need to be made to improve diversity quickly. Be brave. It is not going to be easy to become a leader of consequence.

T
eja Foods is proud to sponsor DARPAN Magazine’s spring issue as we celebrate the extraordinary South Asian women in our community. Teja Foods was part of this great initiative last year when DARPAN released its first Women’s Day issue in March 2020. Our support towards celebrating women and recognizing female achievements was greatly appreciated and applauded by BC residents. The positive feedback was a testament to our work and service in the community. When the opportunity to sponsor this year’s Women’s Special issue came to us, we were thrilled to be on-board. The tremendous achievements of women in our community symbolize the advancements towards greater gender equality and inclusion. At home, in our South Asian community, we continue to support the empowerment of women – our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. Our proud South Asian heritage is rooted in the essence of the modern woman, as we commemorate her strength, courage and resilience. Gurdial Singh Teja launched Teja Foods in 1955. He embarked on a journey of service to our South Asian Community during a time when high-quality South Asian products were not readily accessible. The foundation of our company was built to overcome these barriers in the Canadian market, allowing our community to embrace our cultural heritage and traditions. Our beloved historic brand, the portrait of an Indian woman, is recognized across Canada as a symbol of our strong culture and commitment to excellence. We chose the portrait of an Indian woman who exudes empowerment but also celebrates tradition as a source of strength and pride. Braham Teja and Mandeep Bains are currently leading our company into the next generation while continuing to recognize the importance of heritage, culture and history. Teja Foods is committed to supporting the community and celebrating the empowerment of women and girls as they become leaders in economic, social and political life. As we applaud the extraordinary women who are leading the transformation of our community, together we also celebrate the inspirational women who empower, inspire and advocate in our daily lives. Q
What does being a woman mean to you?
Being a woman epitomizes the meaning of renaissance. A woman is multifaceted, dynamic, powerful and caring. The unique combination of all these traits allows her to build and nurture a solid foundation for those around her.
Q
What has been your biggest achievement in 2020, personally and professionally? My biggest achievement in 2020 has been helping to navigate the Covid 19 pandemic by being a co-founder of the BC Division of the South Asian Covid-19 Task Force. It has been a privilege to educate and empower my fellow South Asians and Canadians to help them better understand the ever evolving pandemic, and what they can do to protect themselves and their communities. I have met many wonderful volunteers and have seen that by working together we can all make a real difference. This has been a very satisfying personal and professional achievement which I could not have done without the support and encouragement of my family and friends.
Q
Who inspires you to do better each day?
I have been blessed to have been surrounded and raised by strong, educated women. In particular, my paternal grandmother was an inspiration to me. She was an only child who was educated at Lady Hardinge Medical School (Class of 1932). She went on to be a successful career woman and mother. She and my own mother inspire me to be my best and do better each day. My success mantra is gratitude. I give thanks for each day and hope to live life to the fullest.

COVER STORY
Q
What does being a woman mean to you?
The definition has changed over the years for me due to my own lived experiences, and now I define a woman as a hero, who is strong mentally and physically, and able to confidently and mindfully switch between her worlds.
Q
What has been your biggest achievement in 2020, personally and professionally? The pandemic threw us all for a loop early last year, and I felt especially apprehensive as a front-line emergency physician. But I have never been one to succumb to the fear of the unknown, and I felt like I had to prepare for the upcoming challenges head-on. Back when we were only starting to figure out what we were dealing with, organizing simulation sessions and securing additional personal protective equipment gave me a sense of control and confidence in my knowledge that allowed
me to work on the front lines. As the pandemic continued on, it became apparent that South Asian and other racial minority populations in Canada were being disproportionately affected by Covid due to factors including frontline essential work and multigenerational households. As a cofounder of the BC chapter of the national volunteer-run South Asian Covid-19 Task Force (SACTF), along with Dr. Madhu Jawanda, I have had the opportunity to actively do something for the community I grew up in. I can act as a voice for those who are unable to speak up for themselves about how they are disproportionately affected by this pandemic and this virus, and also in their ability to access medical knowledge. I feel like our culturally relevant messaging efforts are helping make a difference.
Q
What are you working on right now and in 2021?
Along with our driven group of volunteers
on the SACTF, I am continuing to work on Covid and vaccine education and advocacy efforts, in collaboration with Public Health. We aim to arm our community with the factual medical knowledge they need in order to decrease virus transmission and encourage vaccine uptake so we can get back to our pre-pandemic lives.
Q
What’s your advice for women who wish to follow your path? Be open and honest with yourself about what you want from your life, and then work on making it happen. No matter how long and difficult the path towards your goal seems, if you believe in yourself and have a motivated mindset, you can achieve your goals. Remember the women who have helped pave the way before you so that you can take full advantage of opportunities that you are given to shine!

Q
What does being a woman mean to you?
Being a woman to me means being my authentic self. It means being strong, vulnerable, ambitious, kind, generous, loving and assertive. We don’t have to prove our worth by professional success. My biggest role models are the women who raised me. They were very strong, hardworking, generous, loving and nurturing. They didn’t work outside of their homes, but they were leaders, they were equal contributors in every sense of the word.
COVER STORY In spite of all the progress we have made, gender bias is still a harsh reality many women face at home, in their work place and in society. Men and women both need to work together to address this issue. As women we expect to be treated equal in terms of care, nourishment, education, professional opportunities, compensation and inheritance. Give us the same starting line and see how far we can go.
Q
A milestone that defines your journey?
I grew up in India and moved to Canada in my early 20s. I have now been in Canada for 21 years and have been practicing law for 17 years. It has been an amazing professional journey to build my law practice, in a new country where I did not know many people. I started alone and along the way created a huge network of men and women, who were my clients, colleagues, business contacts
and peers, and now have become friends. I have always made my best efforts to be a contributing member of the society and volunteered for various communityrelated events.
Q
What inspires you to do better each day?
As a child, I would ask my father, if I could be the President or Prime Minster and he would always say yes. And that set in a belief that I could do anything and be whoever I wanted to be, without any limitations. That has been my success mantra. That belief and hard work are the foundation of anything I have achieved. It does pay to be stubborn about achieving your goals. The desire to improve myself as a person inspires me to do better each day. Learning from my experiences and becoming a better person, professionally and personally, is my goal. My clients, my team, my family and friends, all inspire, teach and guide me.
Q
What’s your advice for women who wish to follow your path? Having the right attitude is most important. The right education will open so many more doors for you. Don’t shy away from challenges. Most women I know have faced some sort of adversity or resistance, but still preserved and came out strong. Adversity builds character. It is our innate nature to give love, make scarifies and take care of others, but make sure you also love and take care of yourself. You should always choose you. Dream big, work hard, do what brings you joy. It is a blessing to be born a woman and to be able to love, give, feel, care, work and succeed, the way only a woman can. I love being a woman.

Being a woman means living a layered life, from a mother to an activist, and, most times, with no distinct boundaries. I define it as a gender that represents not just being the giver and preserver of life, but also one that represents compassion, fierceness and progress. For me, the word ‘woman’ has come to represent both traditional and contemporary values of resilience, unbound care and determination, while also being a word that is attempting to expel traditional gender confines.
Q
What has been your biggest achievement in 2020, personally and professionally?? Being given the responsibility for as vital a portfolio as Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives is an achievement I hold close to my heart.
COVER STORY And especially in a climate like today’s, I recognize the honour and the immense responsibility it entails, and one I am determined to execute to the best of my abilities. Another achievement for me is having the privilege of representing Surrey GreenTimbers, as an active member of a provincial government that continues to navigate BC through a pandemic with progressive and inclusive policies. Personally, as a mother, I feel raising wellrounded and socially-conscious children, while also fighting for justice for the underprivileged and trying to push the limits of acceptance and inclusion as an activist, are achievements that are undervalued and many times go underrecognized.

Q
What are you working on right now and in 2021?
The Parliamentary Secretary portfolio that I am undertaking is an extensive project as our government attempts to tackle the hidden vice of systemic racism and remedy how it impedes our province from fulfilling its promise of inclusion and true diversity for a vast segment of British Columbians. I am also a part of many gender equality, affordability and reform initiatives that aim to make life better for all residents, and not just a select few. Besides these, I feel, the project of self-evolution is a vital one, because without our own growth, we cannot fight to bring growth to others.
Q
What’s your advice for women who wish to follow your path?
Of what I have learnt, the most intersectional advice that I may offer is that privilege shared is privilege earned – by which I mean that if we use our privilege to work for, and share it with others, all our lives become better. But that cannot be achieved without working hard and being active in our communities. Our recognition of others’ perspectives only creates more empathy, which in turn creates a better world. Last, but not least, I would want to say that, as I have benefitted from the work and progress of other women, the least I can do is be an active supporter of the work of other women and those who come after me.

Q
What has been your biggest achievement in 2020, personally and professionally? Navigating 2020 in my professional role was a humbling undertaking as we already work with some of society’s most vulnerable and seeing the pandemic create greater inequities was life changing as it really highlighted how we as leaders need to fundamentally change systems that are creating these inequities.
COVER STORY
It was definitely an ironic year for me personally in that I had the honour of receiving several prestigious awards in recognition of my career and service to community yet I think it was the selfreflection and “hustling inwards” as I call it that was my biggest achievement in 2020. Through the rippling effects of the unsettledness and uncertainty we were all feeling with the global pandemic and the reckoning of long-standing inequities in our society, it gave me the impetus to pause and self-reflect on what really fuels me as a person and how I want to show up for others. That learning was huge for me as it’s really focused me to look at the intentionality behind everything I do or will do in the future.

Q
What are you working on right now and in 2021?
Professionally, I’ve got a lot on the go with several projects to serve our growing communities. I’m undertaking a large technology platform implementation across all of our service lines at DIVERSEcity to make our services more accessible. With the sudden shift to remote services during Covid19, we saw opportunity to introduce technology as a means to increase access. We want to be able to build on these learnings and create services that are hybrid – in person for those that prefer that option and online for those that find accessibility increased through that route. This will be game-changing as nonprofits have traditionally been slow adopters of technology so I’m really excited to see how this will allow us to increase our reach to communities across the Lower Mainland and frankly, across the province.
Q
What’s your advice for women who wish to follow your path? Define success on your own terms and remember to hustle inward too. Leading with compassion is not weakness – it’s strength.

My wonderful team of directors at the Voices for Hope Foundation and I were recently the recipients of a community service grant from His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We will be putting this funding towards creating care packages and providing meals to promote mental wellness and self-care for those risking their lives on the frontlines. We are also working on integrating sensory technology into community and postsecondary schools by creating “sensory hubs” which serve as safe spaces for neurodiverse students who are experiencing sensory overload, and we’ve also created a therapy grant program to make therapy more financially accessible for those who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+. This upcoming June 2021, I will be competing in the Miss Canada pageant where I will be representing the province of British Columbia. My goal if I win the title, is to use it to further my humanitarian work within the mental health sector and to uplift marginalized voices through a heart of service.

e can’t help but fall in love with their heroism, daredevilry and larger-than-life persona on the silver screen as they take us into the magical world of cinema. But when it comes to socio-political issues in real-life, Bollywood A-listers, who often play the torch-bearer of justice onscreen, usually refrain from taking any stands. Time and again, one has witnessed the megastars of the Mumbai film fraternity, who have the power to influence the masses, opt for silence over issues that matter. One such recent example is the Farmer’s Protest, which has been underway for over 100 days now and has become one of the biggest protests
in history. Millions of farmers in India have gathered at different sites on the outskirts of Delhi to protest against the three agricultural reform laws that were passed in September without any consultation with them. As per the Indian farmers, the new farm laws threaten their livelihood. While a handful of celebs, especially the ones belonging to the indie tribe, have come out and spoken about the issue, the majority of B-townies have kept silent over the entire matter. While the top stars of the country turned a blind eye on the issue, a western pop star brought the plight of the Indian farmers to global attention. It just took a few words from the songstress – Rihanna to rattle the entire nation. The pop icon along with a media report headlined — 'India cuts internet around New Delhi as protesting farmers clash with police’, wrote on her social media – “Why aren’t we talking about this?” While actress Kangana Ranaut, the selfappointed mouthpiece of Hindutva, went hammer and tongs after the Barbadian pop star and questioned her interest in the whole matter, within a short span of time, some of our beloved stars took to their social media platforms and spoke against international criticism of India’s handling of the ongoing farmers’ protests.

being heavily trolled on the internet, to getting death and rape threats, to being labelled as anti-nationals — the wrath they faced on the internet was indeed despicable. The likes of Swara Bhasker, Taapsee Pannu, Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor are among the few celebrities who are vocal about their support for the farmers and as a result are being continuously subjected to online bullying. Interestingly, the selfappointed social media police didn’t even spare the ones who have been keeping silent throughout the protest and called them out for their cowardice. But amid all this online hatred, mindless trolling and embarrassing and ill-informed statements made by some of our top celebrities, one wonders, if influential actors should even participate in political activism? And we, the fans, who idolize them on screen, should even take their opinions on important
matters as such seriously? They are entertainers who are good at doing their jobs, but is it wise to make them lodestars off the screen? Or to even put the onus of starting a revolution on to their shoulders? “Before being celebrities we are Indians. We are as much responsible for our country as any other citizen. So, if there is something we see is going wrong in our country, we should speak about it without any hesitance, even if it is a political issue,” said actor Aarya Babbar, who has been a vocal supporter of the farmers’ issue. The versatile actor, who has done several Punjabi and Bollywood films further added, “Being a celebrity rather comes with a responsibility. We have a voice that can influence a certain number of people and even communities. We have been gifted with this power, and it’s the people of this nation who has given us this power, and we should use this power in the right way possible. We should not forget that we use

Swara strongly believes that as an actor and citizen one should participate in conversations that define our politics. She said, “I don’t see myself as a political activist, I don’t do anything. Honestly, it’s not like I am on the ground. This is perhaps the first time. But I am an actor and a citizen who is politically conscious and motivated because I feel that politics defines our future, so we have to define our politics.” Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, who too has never been afraid of calling a spade a spade, shares

people’s emotions to make our projects work, we are, who we are today because of all the love showered on us by the public. So, if there is a political issue, where we can see this very public being exploited and their emotions being played with, we should speak up and not be cowards and keep quiet.” When it comes to taking a stand about burning issues, one can’t not mention the feisty actress Swara Bhasker, who has always shown bravery and never shied away from making her voice heard where it matters — be it the CAA protest, the students protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus or now the farmer’s protests.

a similar opinion. The actor in a recent interview said, “In the end, you will not hear the words of your enemies but the silence of your friends. To say that it is not a matter of personal concern would not be right at all. If our farmers are sitting on protest in the bitter cold we cannot turn a blind eye to them. I am sure that the farmer protest will gain momentum and everyone will join in. This will definitely happen. Being silent is tantamount to supporting an oppressor. I believe this.” He further said, “The towering personalities of our film industry are extremely silent over all this. They believe that they may lose something if they speak up. When you have earned enough to provide for seven generations, how much will you lose?”
In all fairness, it is not that our stars have not ever spoken on issues, they have many times in the past, but the repercussions for some have been quite nasty. Just last year, when actress Deepika Padukone paid a quiet visit to the JNU campus to stand in solidarity with the students protesting against a fee hike, the right-wing troll quickly labelled her as anti-national and demanded a
If our farmers are sitting on protest in the bitter cold we cannot turn a blind eye to them. I am sure that the farmer protest will gain momentum and everyone will join in. This will definitely happen. Being silent is tantamount to supporting an oppressor. I believe this,” said veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. boycott for her then-upcoming film Chappak. What’s more, it didn’t stop at that; the actress also received several death and rape threats. Director Anubhav Sinha pointed out at a roundtable discussion, “We saw what happened to Shah Rukh when he used the word ‘intolerant’ or to Aamir when he was telling a benign story about his wife, and people selectively picked up one half of the statement. I am not even talking about them losing contracts, which is fine. They can afford to lose those contracts. Only people who get trolled that viciously will know what it means. Suddenly, you are identified with your religion.”
DARPAN FEATURE Even the Indian media today doesn’t blink an eyelid before branding them as terrorist, antinationals, Pakistanis. Not to forget there are countless cases of journalists and stand-up comedians, who have been slapped with cases of sedition and put behind the bars for questioning actions of the government. In that light, it is not surprising that voices of dissent from Bollywood’s A-lister have slowly started to diminish. Hence, in one sense it’s unfair to expect our celebrities to voice their opinions and be the torchbearer for our causes and battles. Highlighting this very point, Swara said, “Why do we need causes to be legitimised by celebrities in any way? What is this culture where a cause will only come to light and be discussed if a celebrity lends a name to it? And it happens everywhere in the world. Suddenly the Tibetan issue will be talked about because Richard Gere tweeted about it. Or Palestine becomes something because Rihanna said it or the Armenian genocide because Kim Kardashian wrote about it. But that’s problematic, right? I would go to the extent of saying, ‘don’t depend on us; don’t ever depend on actors. I’ll run away the day I have a film release. We should think about causes for their own merit.” True, after all, they’re artists at the end of the day. They can do social and political activism if they want, it’s an active choice but it can’t be expected from them. Moreover, one needs to understand that like the rest of us, they too might have opinions for or against an issue. Sometimes they may be wellinformed or sometimes they might come with halfbaked information and make callous statements like calling the farmers – terrorist, or simply be the bigger megaphones for a political party. Hence, it is important as a movie-going audience, or as their fans, for us to not get blindly influenced by their views and instead use our common sense and discretion before forming any judgements. We don’t watch actors for their political views, we watch TV or go to movies to be entertained. Not to have their opinions forced upon us. Actors taking a strong stand, after carefully understanding and educating themselves on the issue is a good thing. It certainly needs to be applauded, but it can’t be demanded from everyone. Moreover, instead of blindly following our favourite celebrity we need to wise up and use our sensibilities and understanding of the issue before forming our opinions. Eventually, the responsibility to build a conducive environment for one and all is upon us, and not on the stars of the silver screen. eddings for most of us have always been a grand affair, replete with all the extravaganza, fineries, band-baaja, naach-gaana and week-long celebrations. However, recently with more and more modern couples wanting their big day to be an intimate affair, the conventional big-fat-wedding has given way to a new trend — Micro-wedding. Moreover, this latest wedding trend has further gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic; since celebrations are now restricted with only a limited number of guests allowed to join in the revelries. So, are you wondering what is a micro-wedding exactly?
DARPAN

Well, it’s fairly simple. As the name suggests, micro-wedding is an intimate wedding day celebration, where you engage in all the same rituals and fun but instead of having a guest list with over hundred people, you choose to celebrate your special day with immediate family and close friends. A micro-wedding can either be a casual affair or incorporate most aspects of the traditional nuptial ceremony but on a smaller scale. While a big-fatwedding is stressful and demands huge investment, a micro-wedding, on the other hand, is far less stressful and easy on the pocket too. While one has seen a rise in the micro-wedding trend during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the fact is a lot of young couples today are bucking the conventional wedding norms and instead are opting to wed in a minimalistic way for the sheer beauty of simplicity, including some celebrities. Model-turned-actor Milind Soman, who got married to Ankita Konwar in 2018 in a small intimate ceremony attended only by friends and family said, “My wife, Ankita, wanted to have

DARPAN FEATURE list in advance. It’s indeed a tough call to make to resist inviting the whole town for your big day, but remember sticking to a limited number of invitees is also crucial during coronavirus times. Having your guest list in place will also help you break down the cost of the entire ceremony. Lesser the number of people, the more you can save or splurge on things that you really want for the wedding. A micro-wedding typically consists of 30-50 guests. So, make sure you send the invites only to the ones who matter. Most importantly, don’t feel guilty for cutting out distant relatives and fair-weather friends.

If you are planning to have more than one wedding function, it is wise to divide the number of guests between the various functions. This way you can also manage to invite the ones, who you were feeling terrible about having to keep out.

We just had some close friends and family for the rituals. The intimate ceremony made it meaningful.” Even Neha Dhupia and beau Angad Bedi ditched the fancy trimmings of a big-fat-wedding and instead opted for a low-key ceremony. Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost, who got married during the pandemic, also opted for a micro-wedding. Actress Shweta Tripathi, supermodel Natalia Vodianova, Princess Beatrice are among the many celebrities who skipped the big hurrah for a micro-wedding.

Well, if keeping it simple, small and intimate appeals to your sensibilities and you would like to go micro too, we have collated some tips to help you plan a successful micro-wedding. Here’s how you should plan for the perfect microwedding…
Chalk Out The Guest List
Perhaps, this is the toughest task on hand while planning for a microwedding, hence better to start your preps for the D-day by building your guest list or rather downsizing the list. Because micro-wedding is all about keeping it intimate and limiting the number of people attending your wedding, a specific headcount is always important. So ideally it is best to plan your guest

Make Your Budget
While you have decided to go ahead with a micro-wedding, bear in mind that it still comes at a cost. Agreed, you have opted for an intimate affair, but depending on the venue, décor, food, music band, your outfit for the big day, etc., a micro-wedding is still going to cost you a good deal of money. Hence, it is important to know your spending limits. Decide beforehand how much money you want to allocate for the wedding and for what. A well-planned wedding day budget will save you from any last-minute anxieties.

While a micro-wedding gives you an option to save money, it also gives you an option of splurging on things like food, drinks, décor, music, memorabilia, etc. For every couple the preferences are different and knowing where you would like to spend more and what you would like to keep casual is essential, so that you are only smiling on the D-day and not getting worked up about spending that extra dough on an unnecessary floral arrangement. Decide whether you want to treat your guest to an elaborate feast or would you rather splurge on the orchids floral arrangement that you wanted. Even though, it’s a micro-wedding you need to decide whether you want to keep things casual or fancy, and where to splurge and where to scrimp.
Choose Your Dream Venue
The best part about having an intimate style wedding is that it gives you more flexibility to choose your dream venue. The minute you cut down on the guest list, you have more options to look for that perfect location as now you don’t have to stress about accommodating hundreds of guests. Whether it’s a quaint cottage by the sea, or a beautifully decorated backyard, or a sprawling vineyard, or your favourite
DARPAN FEATURE restaurant, or for that matter a gorgeous destination — you can now treat yourself to that dreamy venue you always wanted for your special day. With your budgets under control and a limited guest list now you can spend the dough where it matters the most. A micro-wedding is also the best bet for couples wanting a destination wedding, as they only have to manage the arrangements for 30-40 guests. So, don’t hesitate much with selecting your unique wedding venue. Planning well in advance will also get you some great deals.

Make Your Guests Feel Special
Make your special day all the more special by making your guests feel special by giving them handwritten notes, or treating them to small thoughtful tokens of appreciation or personalized gifts. Given that it is a micro-wedding, it is much easier to add such meaningful touches to your ceremony.
Don’t Skip The Professionals
Even though it’s a micro-wedding, don’t forget it’s your big day hence make sure you hire professionals. Be it a photographer, baker, florist or an event planner turn to pros to ensure a smooth hurdle-free perfect wedding ceremony. You would want to document your special day, hence bringing on-board a good photographer is always advisable as opposed to asking a friend or family member to capture the ceremony. Likewise, your cake and décor too need professional attention, even though it’s an intimate affair.

he ultimate purpose of our lives is to be HAPPY! However, given the unpredictable times that we live in, especially the current state of the world, coupled with the stress of our day-to-day living — for many — the very term ‘happy’ seems like a far-fetched notion.
Simple Tips to Stay Happy By Shweta Kulkarni
How to stay hopeful, strong and happy during difficult

times
Motivational speaker and author Amy Collette writes in her book – The Gratitude Connection – “Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.” And when it comes to dealing with difficult times, this couldn’t be more true! When you are going through a bad phase in life, finding something to feel grateful about can help immensely to amp up your positivity. Even when you think your world is crumbling down, it is possible to find at least one thing to be grateful about. For instance, the unconditional love of your furry friend, or a beautiful sunset, a hearty meal, a caring partner or a supportive friend — shifting your focus on what you have instead of what you don’t, helps you to not only appreciate the goodness in your life but also get respite from your stress. The simplest trick to do so is to think of something good you have or one good happening from the day before you go to bed. Practising gratitude daily will do you a whole lot of good than you can imagine, so go ahead try it.
It is hard not to feel weighed down by our emotions and maintain any sense of positivity in times of crisis — be it global or personal. But the good news is: Even when we are flooded with conflicting emotions and burdened with anxiety, there are a ton of proactive actions that we can take, which will help us stay strong and cope with the stormy phase of our lives. Here, we have gathered some expert tips that will help you to better adapt to life-changing events, build resilience, remain hopeful and stay happy during turbulent times. Read on…
Connect With Nature Nothing heals, soothes and recharges your soul better than nature. Step out, soak up the sun, breathe in the fresh air, take a twenty-minute walk through the woods, sit by the sea - listen to the waves, take a stroll in the park — simply connect with nature and let it do its magic. Studies have proven that spending time in nature gives a boost to your mental well-being and helps you to stay positive.

Limit Your Social Media Consumption Social media has become as much a part of our daily routine as consuming our meals. While it is an excellent medium to stay updated with what’s happening around and staying connected with friends and family, one can’t deny that it is also filled with negativity. Hence limiting your social media consumptions can help you deal with your crisis better.
Surviving through turbulent times is not a cakewalk, however, simple proactive actions can help you keep optimistic and deal with your circumstances better.

Reignite Your Passion Often in our persistent endeavour to chase our career dreams, we lose our spark. In turbulent times, when we are overwhelmed with emotions and feeling hopeless, taking time out to reignite our passion is actually a must. Indulging in activities that nourish our spirit help bring meaning and purpose to our lives. Be it writing, dancing, singing, playing a sport — whatever your passion is, go after it — it will make you more hopeful and will certainly help you better cope with your troublesome situation.

While we all have heard that a simple act of kindness can make the world a better place, kindness can also benefit your mental well-being immensely, especially when you are in the midst of a difficult phase in life. It is natural to feel helpless when you are dealing with a crisis but proactively helping others will not only make a difference to society but will also make you feel good and help you find a purpose in life. Small acts of kindness like helping your neighbour run an errand, extending a helping hand to the needy, volunteering, doing charity or getting involved in any cause that you believe in will help spread positivity and uplift your mood too. TM
Spend Time In Positive Company One of the simplest solutions to uplift your mood and feel a burst of positivity is to surround yourself with cheerful people. If you have toxic people around you, especially during trying times, it is likely that you will end up feeling worse than before. So, avoid toxic and negative people and spend time in the company of those who have a positive outlook towards life. It will uplift your mood and help you better handle your situation.
Practice Acceptance Lastly, what is truly important to keep happy, resilient and hopeful during a tough phase is to accept the situation. Living in denial won’t help your situation any better, rather it stops you from finding a solution to your situation. Remember you can’t always control everything in your life and worrying about it constantly will further damage your mental health.

Wake up early Try waking up 30 minutes or an hour before you usually do. It will be difficult at first, but it will allow you to have some time to yourself before you get started with your day. Use this time to workout, meditate, do yoga, or even just sit down and relax. It’s a great way to get your thoughts organized for the day, and find inspiration for tasks ahead.

Yogi’s Kitchen provided a much-needed service that was lacking in the community. Their growth has been tremendous; they currently serve over 2,500 customers daily, most of whom are Indian students and immigrants. “Since inception we have aimed at adding convenience to our customer’s lives. In a short span of two years, we have managed to become the Number 1 and most popular tiffin service in the Lower Mainland,” says Yogi excitedly. Yogi’s Kitchen
also introduced Feed the Need Canada and donates 50 meals daily to people in need. So which is the most popular meal plan among customers? “It is the standard plan,” answers Yogi. “The primary reasons for its popularity are: Huge variety in menu including continental every Wednesday and biryani every Saturday; non-vegetarian options four days a week; and affordable pricing as compared to the exclusive plan.” He further reveals that the most popular dish is their Saturday special chicken or vegetarian biryani. Yogi wants to expand Yogi’s Kitchen to other similar cities where the population of Indian
students and immigrants is high by launching a franchise model. “People from these areas have reached out to Yogi’s Kitchen on multiple occasions as the struggle to get fresh home-like food delivered to your doorstep is real. The level of convenience our concept adds to everyone’s life is apparent and hence there is a tremendous opportunity to grow in these areas. We have planned to set up five franchises by end of 2021 (Victoria, Brampton, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto) and another eight by 2022,” he discloses. • ½ tsp garam masala • Ghee to deep-fry potatoes • 1 tsp ginger julienne to garnish
Preparation • Boil potatoes until just undercooked. Remove from heat, drain well and keep aside to cool. • Melt ghee in a heavy bottom pan; add brown cardamom, green cardamom and tejpatta. Stir and sauté until it gives out a pleasant fragrance.
DARPAN
TM
• Add sliced onions, stir and sauté until soft and translucent. Add garlic paste and ginger paste, sauté until golden. • Add mutton, stir and increase heat to medium-low, cover and let it cook for two to three minutes. Remove the cover, stir and reduce heat to low until mutton turns to brown, moisture evaporates and ghee separates. Now add whisked curd with one-fourth cup of water, stir to mix and continue stirring until the curd is reduced and ghee starts surfacing. • Add coriander, cumin, Kashmiri red chilli powder, turmeric, and rock salt, stir to mix well for few seconds. Then add tomato puree, stir to mix and increase the heat to medium. Stir and let it cook for two to three minutes. Add three to four cups of water, bring to boil and reduce heat to low, then cover and let it simmer for 25-30 minutes. • Meanwhile remove the skin of potatoes. Poke holes in each potato all over with a toothpick or a skewer. The hole can be half way through and few may be through and through. It’s to absorb flavours and the gravy. • To fry potatoes, heat ghee in a kadahi on medium high heat. Add poked potatoes, once it starts frying, reduce heat to low medium and continue frying. With a slotted spoon, turn potatoes while frying, fry until crisp golden. Potatoes must have enough space to fry evenly, therefore the number of potatoes, amount of ghee, and size of the kadahi must be in sync. Keep aside on kitchen paper. • Remove the cover from the mutton, stir and check if the mutton is cooked. If it is almost cooked, add fried potatoes and stir gently. If the gravy is thin, simmer open, if it’s thick, add hot water. Let the potatoes and mutton simmer for five to seven minutes or until the meat is well-cooked and potatoes are filled with gravy. The gravy needs to be semi-thick. • Finely drizzle lemon juice and sprinkle garam masala and let it simmer for a minute. Move into a bowl and garnish with ginger julienne.

Calming green indoors Growing house plants is an excellent way to give your house a soothing atmosphere. It is also a great way to pass some time, speak to your plants, and give the house some positive energy. From orchids, indoor trees, to hanging flower arrangements - natural green elements are always good for the house. For low maintenance plants try succulents, money plants, and other tiny plants. This also gives you an opportunity to get creative and arrange the plants aesthetically. Besides plants, flowers can also be a good way to bring some natural beauty to the house. Splurge on fragrant flowers such as roses, lilies, freesia, and geraniums in beautiful vases for the house. We bet it will make you happy!

Personalise your home office Since a lot of your time is spent in the office space, make sure it is the best place for you to work. Keep it clutter-free, add some plants, a coaster for your drink, and pens. You could also add pictures of your loved ones, or motivational stickers to keep you going during the day.
Aqua shades for walls A big trend for the year is to get the walls painted aqua green. With all of us being stuck indoors for almost ever, what one needs is some uplifting interiors. Add a pinch of blue to the walls and it is sure to make things a lot more positive and optimistic. The aqua green comes in different shades and any of those shades are perfect if you are looking to give your house a facelift. Universally, blue is a colour that can bring with it calmness, hope, reduce heart rates, and a tranquil setting to the house. The warm neutral blue is warm, comforting, and can be uplifting during tough times.

If you are wishing to match the interiors of the room, you could also buy pink pampas grass. They bring with them a cozy, natural texture and a boho-chic look. They not only protect women from commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking, but they also support children and help them get out of vulnerable situations.
Their journey: Established in 1986, Prerana first noticed how prostituted women and their children were treated as part of the flesh trade. What was even worse is the fact that most of the children born in the red-light districts had no escape

An organization of such magnitude cannot function without a good team. Priti Patkar, also known as Priti Tai, is the founder and executive secretary of Prerana. In order to solve the problem, Prerana introduced several path-breaking interventions, followed up on solved cases, and most importantly disseminated them for mainstreaming. Their first initiative was in 1988 when they introduced Night Care Centre, a shelter to safeguard children and protect them from the influence of the red light area.
The next year in 1989, the Institutional Placement Program was conceptualized. The idea behind this program was to cater to the specific needs of children and women living in the red light areas and protect them from any sort of exploitation. But protecting them and giving them shelter was not enough. What was needed was an education system. In 1990, Prerana established Education Support Program that took care of sustained enrollment, mitigation of drop outs, reduction of wastage and stagnation, and achievement of significant academic milestones so as to ensure social mainstreaming and stability. In 1999, Prerana expanded its expertise and launched the Anti-Trafficking Centre, a specialized resource center on trafficking problems and anti-trafficking initiatives.

After 24 hours of existence and operation, Prerana reached a milestone when they launched their first physical resource center and special home for girls. Power your home with renewable energy One of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emission is the use of non-renewable energy. This includes the burning of fossil fuels for energy, which is then used for heating, electricity, transportation, and industrial purposes. Choose a utility company that generates energy using renewable resources, such as wind or solar.
Avoid using plastic Carpooling, taking public transit, riding a bike, or even walking for transportation helps reduce your carbon emission while saving you a few bucks. Switching to a fuel efficient vehicle, such as a hybrid or fully electric car, is another great way to save money and fuel.
Optimize your diet The meat and dairy production industries are also responsible for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing the amount of meat and dairy-based meals in your diet, and replacing them with plantbased foods can make a big difference. Also, buying organic and local food helps protect the environment and climate as they contain fewer pesticides, and reduce carbon emissions caused while transporting the produce.

Almost all plastic is made from fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas, and crude oil, which means it emits greenhouse gases as it decays. Plastic has found its way almost everywhere - in landfills, oceans, on the streets, and even in the air - and its durability also makes it hard to get rid of easily. Avoiding one-use plastics and replacing them with reusable versions can help reduce plastic waste, along with greenhouse gas emission.

Educate yourself on the issue, spread awareness using social media, and voice your concerns by talking to local elected officials. Being politically active and making sure you’re voting for politicians and parties that care about climate change is also very important. Lastly, join and support movements and non-profit organizations such as Fridays for Future or Climate Action Network to show that you care about the future of our planet. Without efforts to prevent global warming and climate change, the challenges will only increase. Many people feel that the issue is too widespread for the actions of an individual to really make a difference. However, as David Suzuki once said “In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket.”

Q: How did you meet? Harpreet: We met on a blind date! Although we lived across the country from one another, we managed to cross paths through our families. My grandmother and Manny’s mother live a few houses down from each other in South Vancouver and are good friends. I was in town for an engagement and received a message from Manny who had been given my number from his mom. Manny: We went for dinner and quickly hit it off chatting about travel and family. You don’t really get to know someone well off a first date so we made sure to see each other several more times that week while Harpreet was in Vancouver.

Q: Could you share your proposal story?
Q: What do you love most about one another? Harpreet: I love so much about Manny. He is very compassionate, loving and humble, he makes me feel at ease. He inspires me on a regular basis with his work ethic and drive. Manny also is extremely supportive of all that I do and he consistently motivates me. I must also mention that he is hilarious and can put a smile on my face effortlessly. He also makes the most delicious pizza! Manny: Harpreet is kind, generous, and loving, to all those around her. Manny: Every time I would visit Toronto to see Harpreet she would point at the CN Tower. Therefore, I wanted to make the proposal special with the best skyline view. When I landed in Toronto, Harpreet picked me up and we got ready. I had told her before that we were headed to a gala for work, so we were dressed in formal wear. When we got to the location, I started saying nice things and knelt on one knee. I opened the ring box, and we got the perfect proposal shot, skyline draped behind us. Harpreet: Manny then took us back to all of the spots I had taken him on the first day we spent in Toronto together. It was extremely thoughtful.
Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment? Harpreet: Manny and I

DARPAN Weddings Our wedding day was nothing short of magical, it was beyond intimate and beautiful. My favourite moment has to be walking into the ceremony, seeing Manny waiting there for me, and knowing in that moment we were off to spend the rest of our lives together. Manny: We were both determined as a couple and had to make it happen on our date. We embraced the Canadian winter and had a magical enchanted winter wedding. It was more than what we could hope for.
Q: Can you describe your outfits? Harpreet: To the wedding ceremony, I wore a mauve-pink lehenga with rose gold detailing and plenty of pearl work. It was from Sunny’s Bridal, who also created the custom merlot shawl with similar pearl detailing and a lovely silk mauve-pink mask to complete the look. My bridal set was a kundan style rose gold piece with off-white pearls, accompanied with a matching tikka and a custom made passa, all from Moorni Jewelers. My reception dress, a piece from an Italian design house, Mila Nova, was an ivory ball gown submersed in delicate net, lace, small studded detailing and a dramatic train. Manny: My look was custom crafted by Sunny’s Bridal to be of a royal Sikh warrior. I wore a cream chola achkan, hand done with gold and champagne zari with a pearl highlight, draped in a merlot shawl. The feathered kalgi, cream pearls and sword completed the royal look.
had initially planned to tie the knot in Tulum, Mexico, with approximately 200 attendees but then the pandemic happened. Having a micro wedding however did not mean we had to compromise on a vision. Instead, we had to pivot (and find another getaway). Our wedding took place on January 16th, 2021, in Whistler, B.C., at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. With the help of our phenomenal vendors, we executed a stunning enchanted winter garden theme. We were limited to having only our immediate families physically present on our big day but set up a livestream so that all our family and friends could virtually attend from the comfort of their homes (many with tea and biscuits).

We ensured we picked the best vendors and gave them autonomy to flex their creative muscles to just do their thing. My favourite moment is when Harpreet arrived at the ceremony. She looked even more stunning! When she sat beside me and it was just her and I with God, it sunk in, and I felt ultimate bliss.
Q: Could you tell us about your reception? Harpreet: With safety regulations in place, our reception was an intimate dinner in the private room at Wildflower in Fairmont Château Whistler.
DARPAN
TM
DARPAN Weddings My reception outfit was a StyleBySarai bespoke and fit like a glove. It was comprised of a forest green velvet cocktail jacket with satin details, black trousers with satin waistband and sidebraid, and textured hidden front shirt. Can’t forget the bowtie and suspenders.
Q: Where did you honeymoon? Harpreet: We have not yet gone on a honeymoon due to the current regulations and overall situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, we “fiancé-mooned” a great deal as an engaged couple, visiting Italy, Bali, and even embarking on a cross Canada road trip.
Q: What are your goals as a couple? Harpreet: Our short-term goals include, learning to cook more plant-based dishes and completing our French lessons. Overall, working together to help others as it is something we’re both very passionate about. Manny: Philanthropy is very important to us. In lieu of receiving gifts, we held a wedding fundraiser with donations going to Covenant House Vancouver. As we hit business milestones, we will be able to give back more and more to society.
Q: What are the strengths of your marriage? Manny: We have trust and get along extremely well. We’re pretty much cracking jokes and having laughs all day. Our goals are aligned and we are unequivocally supportive of each other. Harpreet: We manage to put a positive spin on most situations, and we also share the same sense of humour and communicate quite effectively.

e’re still in the middle of a global pandemic, that’s for sure. Almost a year later, we’ve adjusted to evolved ways of life that include changing the way we interact with each other (or lack thereof ), how we travel and most importantly, how we dress. Countless studies have shown that fashion improves human mood and at this rate, it’s all about mind over matter. Remember the old saying, “Dress to impress”?

As we enter spring of 2021, it’s time to dust off those words and impress the heck out of ourselves...even if we’re still working from home offices and our days consist of cat walking from desk to fridge and back again. In the world of digital marketing, we’re starting to have deeper conversations about nostalgia and implementing it into every facet of our lives, beyond Facebook and Instagram. We want to be able to mentally travel back to a place and time when we felt safe and sexy. So,

Remember the old saying, “Dress to impress”? As we enter spring of 2021, it’s time to dust off those words and impress the heck out of ourselves. Let’s dig into what you’ll be wearing that will make your heart sing again. Turn up that boombox, because here go... Adidas: Temperatures are rising but you’ll want to keep your cool indoors. Invest in an Adidas track jacket. How about the Latex Track Jacket in nude, made for all genders? This piece can easily be paired with gray sweatpants or leggings. Jason Wu Gucci: Into comfort but still want to show off on Zoom? Iron your favorite sports jersey, pair it with high-end track pants then wrap the outfit up in some crazy-colored heels. Bold lettering will be all the rage this spring. Why? We want to be seen and heard and prove that we’re alive. According to L’Officiel, the wellknown fashion brand will knock high-fashion sportswear out of the ballpark. Versace: This brand has always been at the top of their game. Rumor has it that the company will make tracksuits readily available. You’ll be popping with bursts of color from head to toe – from hot greens to hot oranges. Jason Wu: If you’re truly into dressing to impress, it has to be Wu all the way. I recommended adding the following pieces to your collection: Jason Wu’s Mixed Rib Sweater, the Striped Knit Dress and the Tuck Sleeve Dress. RVNG Couture: Recently featured at NYFW, this haute brand brought fun back to fashion. Jordan Stewart, designer, stated that we have to come out of the Covid stupor one way or another, even if that means hosting an intimate tea party. If you’re so bold enough as to ditch the sweats, invest in some timeless RVNG pieces such as the Floral Suit Blazer, the Eloise Blazer Dress and Noelle Silk Suit Set. All RVNG looks nod to simpler times, going back to the early-80s. House of Hayla: We can’t ignore accessories, right? So, how do you feel about sandals? brand’s heels are too fabulous for words. Pick up a pair of burgundy HOH Kitten Mono Heels; they’re reminiscent of a 1980s pump. MITA: It wasn’t exceptionally trendy back then, but the future of fashion lies within sustainable products. MITA meets every modern requirement imaginable. Protect your eyes and your planet by investing in a pair of Nile, Lincoln and Brickell sunglasses. And yes, you may break fashion rules while under quarantine; you’re allowed to wear sunglasses indoors. And with that, fashionistas, know that no matter which high-end route you choose, always move forward with what feels right and proceed in purchasing with confidence. Keep a keen eye out for pastel colors, too, especially in crop tops and within the realm of accessories. Pop art will also be a trend that, in my opinion, will never go out of style; think of the late-Keith Haring and his simplistic prints that you’ll find on screen-printed t-shirts. What will you be wearing to the fashion show of life? Stay beautiful and bold and always authentically you.

Engaging in a slight warm-up is extremely beneficial to create circulation. A warm-up can be as simple as this: Standing with arms overhead, take a deep breath in, and pull the arms down with your exhale. Repeat 10x and feel the oxygen moving through your body!
Hold your stretches longer Up until now, we have been doing the standard 30-60 second hold and then move on to the next stretch. However, in understanding muscle anatomy, we know that muscles have little sensors to monitor when the muscle gets stretched past its ‘safe zone.’ These little sensors are called stretch receptors and are there to protect. To signal to stretch receptors that there is NO danger, and that we actually want to stretch the muscle, we must stick around in the stretch for a few minutes and breathe. Use pillows, blocks, furniture to help stabilize you. Stay in the same stretch or gently move into a different angle for up to 5 minutes. This will resemble a Yin style yoga stretch.
Stretch neglected areas In my Stretch Therapy practice, I have noticed that the parts we use the most often, we stretch the least. I am referring to the hands/wrists and the feet/ankles. The reason it is wise to stretch these areas is because the tissue (Fascia) that starts at your hands, runs up to the neck and shoulder. The concept of stretching along fascial lines has greatly helped people to relieve their recurring neck and shoulder tension. This concept applies to the feet as well. The tissue from the bottom of your feet (plantar fascia) is the same tissue that runs up the back of the leg all the way to the hip. This is called the Superficial Back Fascial Line and the same tissue actually runs all the way up to the neck! Releasing stuck energy in these areas results in much less tension pulls in the tight areas.
Incorporate into dayto-day
PHOTOS: ISTOCKPHOTO, CONTRIBUTED
Once you incorporate the previous four tips, it is safe to say your stretching routine can be very effective even if it is 10 minutes. Now 10 minutes a day can be incorporated very easily, you just have to stay intentional. Perhaps you can sneak it in while on a zoom call? Or while waiting for the coffee to brew - if you follow me on social media you know this one is my jam! Another option my clients use is they choose 1 stretch before bed. It helps them unwind, relax the nerves, and sleep better. Using these 5 simple techniques will result in more energy, more flexibility, longevity, and best of all you become physically able to do more movements. Aim for 10 minutes a day, and if you do more, great. Keep it a regular practice and you will see progress! You may also notice you breathe more mindfully throughout the day. Stretching is truly a great way to reconnect with your body. Keep it gentle and meet your body where it is at.

Interior space is about as generous as you can expect out of a compact car. BMW says the rear legroom is comparable to a 3 Series, measuring 873 millimetres, but it really depends on how tall the front occupants are. Still, I didn’t have any major complaints from those seated in the second row. The standard ambient illumination provides six different colours to choose from that really add a touch of elegance to the cabin. Our 228i trim had under the hood a zippy 2.0-litre TwinPower turbocharged four cylinder, mated to an eightspeed automatic transmission. Making 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the engine is more than sufficient to get the job done — whether
running errands or attacking the back roads — especially when complemented by xDrive allwheel drive, chassis bracing and the optional M Sport suspension bringing the sedan 10 millimetres closer to the ground. Debuting on the GC is the near-actuator wheel slip limitation (ARB) system. Borrowed from the BMW i3 EV, ARB improves traction during cornering or acceleration in wet and icy conditions. The former is certainly useful in Greater Vancouver’s winter climate and gave me extra confidence navigating tight roads in rainy weather. Also available is the M235i Gran Coupé that utilizes a tuned version of the same bi-turbo four-cylinder mill, cranking out an additional 73 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque, and a host of other upgrades inside and out.

Vision comes to the rescue. Four exterior cameras provide a bird’s eye view, which is an absolute life saver when attempting to squeeze into omnipresent “small car” spots in the city. One of the areas of the Escalade Cadillac has been marketing quite heavily is the stereo, and rightly so. Partnering with Californiabased acoustics specialists AKG, the audio system is made up of 36 speakers installed all around bringing new meaning to the term surround sound. Boasting a curb weight of 2,640 kilograms, no less than a 6.2-litre V8 engine will do. Although pumping out 460 horsepower, the metallic behemoth unsurprisingly feels heavy especially under heavy braking. Four-wheel drive and Independent all-around suspension helps wrangle all that mass during cornering, and the optional adaptive air suspension with magnetic ride control makes every drive a smooth one thanks to an ability to constantly monitor road conditions and automatically
adjust dampening to compensate for any bumps encountered. I haven’t touched on the styling yet and objectively speaking the SUV looks badass. Not just because of its imposing size, but the coat of Dark Moon Blue Metallic paint, signature vertical LED lighting, 22-inch “Dark Android” finished alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips and matte chrome trim on our Premium Luxury grade. A Sport model is also available wearing a black mesh grille and dark accents. The 2021 Cadillac Escalade is built at the company’s plant in Arlington, Texas.

Also quite remarkable is the amount of output Mercedes-AMG has managed to extract from a rather modest 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor: 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The car is quick on its feet, able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, aided by a super quickshifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Drivers can take over the gear change duties anytime by tugging on one of the two steering wheel paddles. Unfortunately, the A 35’s impressive get-up-and-go is mostly felt only and not heard, as there’s no dynamic exhaust found to unleash a hearty rumble at the push of a button like on siblings the CLA 45 or C 63. An AMG Performance version of the automaker’s proprietary 4MATIC all-wheel drive is standard. The variable system can favour the front axle completely, or split 50:50 with the rear, and automatically determines torque distribution based on the current acceleration, steering angle, rotational speed of each individual corner and more. Even in rainy Vancouver weather, 4MATIC gave me the confidence to go about business on the road as usual. Sitting on AMG Sports Suspension, comprised of McPherson front struts and multi-link rear setup, the A 35 does a good job of keeping the vehicle planted during high speed cornering manoeuvres, but really leaves something to be desired in the comfort department — to say the ride is stiff would be an understatement. Adding the optional AMG Ride Control that has adjustable damping may be the way to go here.

Q&A What were the main challenges of transitioning from the private sector to a non-profit organization? There weren’t any challenges for me. The mission is a huge driver. People who work for an NGO rarely do it for the money. To be surrounded by that energy is fabulous. NGOs can also be less hierarchical and you can engage your peers in the same plane. Did your background influence your decision of working for an NGO? In my early twenties, I realized that—because I got a good quality education and had a good job—I was in a privileged position. The question became ‘can you find something to do that would make you want to get up in the morning?’ In my early volunteering days, I learned there’s a lot of joy in living in community, as well as giving and sharing. I was fortunate to figure this out and find a path. NGO jobs are hard to come by because the sector is so underfunded. I was lucky to get one and grow in the position. Indians around the world have made significant contributions to the countries that receive them. How do you explain this phenomenon? We’re more than one-sixth of the population. Of course in a globalized world we’re going to be everywhere. Regardless if migration is forced or chosen, immigrants must have a drive and a willingness to go out there and participate and enrich their communities, as well as their own experience. The more you give, the more you get.

2021 Is All About Female Power In Bollywood
Gangubai Kathiawadi
WOMEN-CENTRIC FILMS IN 2021 BY SHWETA KULKARNI
We take a look at some of these most eagerly-awaited films, where women will pack the punch and set the screen ablaze in 2021.
B
ollywood, unquestionably, is a maledominated industry, where the female protagonist is often stereotyped and is seen in the shadow of the male lead. Having said that, one can’t even refute the fact that over the years, there have been several films that have defied the formulaic image of the Bollywood heroine and given us some memorable on-screen women
characters that have struck a chord with their sheer strength and beauty. In the recent past, too, one has seen an array of women-centric films that celebrated femininity in its full glory and portrayed strong female characters on the silver screen. Going by the looks of it now, 2021, too, seems like the year where women shall rule the screen. There are a bunch of female-led films headlined by some of the most talented actresses of Bollywood scheduled to release this year. We take a look at some of these most eagerly-awaited films, where women will pack the punch and set the screen ablaze in 2021.
Directed by: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Staring: Alia Bhatt, Shantanu Maheshwari, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa Directed by the critically acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is known for his portrayal of strong women characters on screen, this biographical drama has already created quite a furore among the Bollywood buffs across the globe. Based on a chapter about Gangubai Kothewali from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Gangubai Kathiawadi will showcase the powerhouse of talent – Alia Bhatt in a never-seen-before avatar. Commenting about her character, Alia wrote on Twitter, “A name you’ve heard, a story you haven’t. #GangubaiKathiawadi.” The film traces the life of Gangubai, a young girl from Kathiawad, who was sold to a brothel by her husband for Rs. 500. Left with no choice, the feisty young girl embraced her destiny and went on to become the madam of the brothel in Kamathipura and later a politician. Now how can one miss a courageous tale like this? The film is poised to release on July 30, 2021, make sure you add it to your watchlist now.
Rashmi Rocket
Directed by: Akarsh Khurana Staring: Taapsee Pannu, Priyanshu Painyuli Sports dramas have certainly caught the fancy of Bollywood filmmakers of late, and another woman-led sports film releasing this year is — Rashmi Rocket. Featuring the firebrand actress Taapsee Pannu in the lead, Rashmi Rocket follows the life and struggles of a country girl – Rashmi, who dreams of winning international athletic contests. Taapsee, who is known for getting into the skin of her characters, has undergone a mind-blowing physical transformation for the film. Speaking about the film, Akarsh Khurana, who marks his directorial debut with Rashmi Rocket, said, “The sport forms the backdrop of the film, while the story narrates an athlete’s journey from anonymity to fame and how she gets caught up in the politics and corruption of the sports system along the way.” The director further revealed that the film has been inspired by the real-life experiences of several female athletes of India. Now, this one just can’t be missed.

Dhaakad Directed by: Razneesh Razy Ghai Staring: Kangana Ranaut, Divya Dutta, Arjun Rampal
Saina Directed by: Amole Gupte Staring: Parineeti Chopra, Manav Kaul, Paresh Rawal The power-packed teaser of Saina has already made a strong impression on one and all, and now we can’t wait to see this film on the big screen. Headlined by Parineeti Chopra, Saina chronicles the inspiring journey of the only Indian woman badminton player to be world No. 1 – Saina Nehwal. The film will take us through one of India’s greatest athletes’ life and her passion for sports. Parineeti, who has gone through rigorous training to play the Padma Bhushan awardee on-screen, is looking impressive as the badminton champ. Commenting about her preparation for the biographical sports drama, Parineeti said, “The first step was to unlearn everything I thought I knew about badminton and learn it like a professional player ‘cause just being able to hit the shuttle wouldn’t do! I trained for six whole months like a full-fledged sportsperson — it was a long, rigorous, and back-breaking process.” Saina is scheduled to hit the screens on March 26, 2021, so block Celebrating Years of Publishing your dates for this one now.

With the film’s leading lady — Kangana Ranaut calling it — “India’s first female-led action thriller’, Dhaakad has already sparked plenty of interest among moviegoers. While the makers of the film are tight-lipped about the plot-line of the film, it is learnt that Kangana will be seen playing a fearless and fiery agent called Agni in the film. Commenting about her character, the actress said, “They call her Agni… the brave one, I say she is my depiction of Bhairavi the goddess of death.” Further elaborating about the film Kangana said, “Dhaakad is not only a benchmark film for my career but will be a turning point for Indian cinema as well. The film is mounted on a large scale and is one of a kind female-led action film.” You can catch the feisty actress kicking some butts on screen on October 1, 2021.
Sherni Directed by: Amit Masurkar Staring: Vidya Balan, Ila Arun, Mukul Chadda Vidya Balan is arguably the flag bearer of the changing narratives of the archetypical Bollywood heroine onscreen. And now the versatile actress is all set to wow us once again with her stellar acting chops in her upcoming film — Sherni. Directed by Amit Masurkar of Newton fame, the film explores the man-animal conflict and is inspired by true events. In November 2018, Tigress Avni, also known as T1, was shot dead in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district in India. The film revolves around this incident and Vidya will be seen as a forest officer in the film. Commenting about the film, Vidya said, “I loved Newton, and when Amit narrated Sherni to me, I knew I wanted to do this film. The uniqueness of the story and its world appealed to me.” Well, we can’t wait to watch this one. With all these movies slated to release this year, it is pretty clear that it will be girls who shall be running the show this year in Bollywood. More power to these powerhouses of talents.

What challenges did you face when you moved here? One of the main challenges was initial job searches, which can take a bit of time. Having family here has its benefits and it wasn’t too challenging to settle down here.
How do you see your future in Canada?
We love the sense of freedom and security.

Why did you decide to migrate to Canada?
Manroop Kaur works at Westland Insurance as senior financial accountant Norah and Krisha are 9 and 6 years old
W
e both took different paths on our journey to Canada. We were already living in Canada when we were introduced to each other through mutual friends. We got married in 2006, and lived in Ottawa for a year, where I worked for the federal government and Manroop worked for a telecom company. Manroop always wanted to move back to Western Canada and so we decided to move to Edmonton for the prospect of a good career and still be close to Vancouver. We always loved Vancouver too much and finally in 2019, we moved and settled in Vancouver. This is home sweet home for us.

Manish: I moved to Alberta in 2000 to go to University for my education in computing sciences. By the time I was close to finishing my studies, I was already working for my University and Canada felt like home. Staying here and applying for residency was an obvious choice. Manroop: When I first landed in Vancouver with my family in March of 1997, it was raining outside. Wet streets, cherry blossoms, and lush green grass made the new beginning even more beautiful. The friendly nature of people in Vancouver gave me comfort and made it easier to adjust. Having family here definitely helped us settle down much quicker.
Where did you stay when you reached Canada? We both had families in Canada when we arrived and had a good support system in place. We stayed with our respective families upon our arrival.

We really enjoy trying out new food and traveling to different places in Canada. It’s a great country if you love the outdoors. There are no dislikes." How did you manage to get used to the people, weather, and your new surroundings in Canada? Manroop: Getting used to people was easy. Everyone is so friendly here and having a family support in place makes it that much easier. Edmonton weather is a lot different, so it took a little bit of time for Manish to get used to the frigid weather in Edmonton. For me, Vancouver was a perfect place in terms of weather and the beautiful mountains.
What were your first impressions of Canada? Canada is a great county in terms of being truly multiethnic and multi-cultural. A true cultural mosaic. We both loved the natural beauty and friendly people here. A great place to live, raise family and to call home.
We see an amazing and happy life for us. We see it as full of opportunities to raise our family and provide the best support to our kids, while we grow and continue to explore this vast country.
How has your overall journey in Canada been so far? It’s been great so far. We managed to have good careers, a great family and a fulfilling life. It keeps getting better as we go along. We have made some really good friends and also have close family that is always there to support us. We cherish every moment that we have spent here and wouldn’t want to change anything.
What do you like/dislike about Canada? We love the sense of freedom and security. We really enjoy trying out new food and traveling to different places in Canada. It’s a great country if you love the outdoors. There are no dislikes.
Any advice for future immigrants? As a new immigrant there is a lot to learn from all different cultures, and share your culture with others. We would advice new immigrants to travel around Canada whenever they get an opportunity. There are a lot of amazing places to see and some great people to meet.
What do you miss about your homeland? We do miss the amazing food and festivities from India. It is always very heartwarming to visit the homeland and our friends and family there.
