Hello DARPAN readers,

We’re excited to bring you our MarchApril Spring issue, hoping Spring is close on the heels. After several unexpected snowfalls and cold weather conditions in the last few weeks, we look forward to the warmer, brighter, and more beautiful days ahead as we bring you this powerpacked issue celebrating women in British Columbia and beyond.

For the fourth consecutive year, our March-April cover story showcases South Asian women achievers from British Columbia whose aspirations and passion drove them to excel in their fields, constantly beckoning them to push the envelope and reach for more. We endeavoured to ensure they came from diverse industries and represented women across ages and professions, including politics, law enforcement, the corporate sector, entrepreneurship, sports, media and social work. It was a conscious decision as we wanted to highlight the journeys of women achievers from different fields to inspire you to go after

your dreams. Trailblazers in their fields, some of these women are the firsts to reach places where no one like them has been before.

The issue also brings women-driven trend stories such ‘The Future is Female’ and ‘The Changing Portrayal of Women in Indian Cinema.’ We’ve also packed some incredible tech-gifting ideas, spring fashion essentials and fun ways to spruce up your home. For the travel bug in you, check out the feature on five unique and unusual things to do in Goa.

We’re also excited to share with you that we’ve been diligently working on the upcoming inaugural Darpan Power Women of Influence Gala at the Vancouver Convention Centre on March 24th, 2023. The event’s highlight will be an insightful panel discussion where the Minister of National Defence, Hon. Anita Anand, Business Leader Devinder K. Gill, Social Activist and Humanitarian Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, former Miss Universe Lara Dutta, and the Host of CBC Vancouver News at 6 Anita Bathe will discuss some of the most pressing issues faced by today’s women. None other than Neetu Garcha from Global News will be moderating the panel discussion.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. We look forward to your continuous support and feedback.

Discipline. Passion. Family. These are the pillars that support Jasman Sangha’s basketball career as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I team at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Be it his reputed three-point shooting ability on the basketball court or academic perseverance, Sangha’s talents and hard work are unparalleled.

Born in Surrey, British Columbia, Sangha moved to Brampton, Ontario, as a toddler. Though he always enjoyed playing sports on the street, he did not venture out into organized sports until middle school. Even then, basketball was not really in the mix as he was more interested in other sports. The star sportsman played street basketball with his friends during leisure time, but it wasn’t until Grade 9 that he joined his high school’s basketball team, where his natural talent for the sport surfaced. Through his teenage years, Sangha had the support of great mentors. At this point, without much practice, Sangha was averaging about 5 points a game.

Towards the later years of high school, Sangha decided to laser focus on his physical fitness and practicing regime. At 6:00 am each morning, Sangha would hit the gym for an intense workout and arrive at the basketball courts to practice. Soon, Sangha was averaging 24 points a game. He details, “My parents worked 14-hour shifts to support the family, so I didn’t have car rides. That summer, I’d walk back home for an hour after workouts. I was in love with getting better and competing.”

As time went on, Sangha’s parents began bringing up the oh-so-dreaded career talk in Grade 12. His brother, a top student, was attending a prestigious university, whereas Sangha struggled academically and did not have competitive grades. Sangha’s older brother stepped in and reasoned with

their parents to support their son in exploring professional basketball. Eventually, Sangha’s parents began investing in him, pushing their child to give the sport of basketball his all. Sangha shares, “I remember my dad asking me who the best player in the NBA is and I think I named Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. He said you’ve got to be better than them.”

Excelling in sports, Sangha finished high school in Canada. Canadian universities wanted to recruit Sangha, but his heart was set on moving to the United States of America (USA). During a visit across the border to a local school, Sangha was spotted by a coach, who had trained the likes of Zion Williamson and Jaylen Brown. The coach offered to train Sangha all summer and open doors of opportunities. When Sangha got back to Canada, his parents were not on board; they wanted Sangha to accept a local Canadian scholarship offer. Of course, there were inhibitions about trusting a man that Sangha had only just met. His brother

vouched for him yet again and even paid for Sangha’s flight, encouraging him to work hard and follow his dreams.

Sangha describes that it wasn’t all a smooth ride, “I had all these scholarship offers, but my coach told me that none of these schools would be able to take me since my grades were so low. Taking an alternative route, I then had to graduate from junior college first. Looking back, I realized I was way too focused on sports and friends in high school. I didn’t really balance things. I underwent a harsh reality check, but tried my best to turn things around.”

During his time in the USA, Sangha went through rigorous training. Moreover, Sangha was also putting in the work for prep school. As time went on, Sangha landed at Florida’s Pensacola State Junior College, where he was excelling athletically. However, Sangha received some bad news amidst his basketball season; his grandmother had stage four lung cancer and not long to live. When he heard the news, Sangha traveled back home to be with his grandma in her last days. After losing her, Sangha did return to his college, but his athletic performance declined, which led to him losing his starting spot. Soon after, COVID-19 shut down the world, giving Sangha the space to grieve and the time to renew his energy. After what he calls the toughest year of his life, Sangha emerged with a refreshed focus.

I want to be the ultimate professional and inspire kids, while creating resources for young athletes, especially those with financial barriers.”

For his final year in junior college, Sangha transferred to Garden City Community College in Kansas, where he bounced back so impressively that he received more than a dozen Division I offers. Sangha signed a fullride scholarship to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This time, grades were not a barrier. In fact, Sangha is currently finishing his semester with a 4.00 GPA.

Today, Sangha is thankful that he is able to relieve financial burden off of his parents and also live out his grandma’s dream. When it comes to other South Asian youth who may be interested in pursuing professional sports, he reminds students to work hard and get the best possible grades, even if sports is what they are interested in career-wise. As for the parents, Sangha encourages them to allow their children to do what they truly want.

Looking into the future, Sangha dreams of playing basketball professionally, specifically with the Raptors in the National Basketball Association (NBA), “I want to be the ultimate professional and inspire kids, while creating resources for young athletes, especially those with financial barriers.” Sangha’s key to success, as cliché as it may be, has always been the notion that hard work beats anything, which was instilled in him by his parents from a young age. Evidently, the proof is in the pudding with the prodigy’s noteworthy accomplishments and extraordinary athletic performance. Embodying robust resilience and endless devotion, both on and off the court, Sangha is surely well on his way to greatness, achieving nothing but net through his journey.

DARPAN TM 24 MARCH | APRIL 2023 Reflecting The South-Asian Lifestyle

With 44% of today’s Canadian workforce being females, women have become far more involved in workplaces than ever. This has been especially true in the second half of the 20th century and beyond. In fact, the participation of females in the workplace account for one of the most substantial changes to the Canadian labour market. As social norms regarding gender roles evolve, and newer technologies are developed, the future looks bright for female professionals. As such, some significant trends are predicted to arise in the coming decades, which reputable sources like Forbes hypothesize will also be of heavy importance to the female workforce.

The Future is Balanced

In the future, work-life balance will be of utmost importance. The pandemic has truly taught all the significance of family. The top priority in life will not be career advancement, but self-growth and family time. Juggling household responsibilities, children, and jobs will be less of a guilt-ridden struggle, and more of a healthy balance.

The Future is Remote

Thanks to the era of COVID-19, the future will entail remote work opportunities. Mandatory office presences will be a thing of the past, and women will of course have the opportunity to reap the benefits and take advantage of this option. Furthermore, this will allow for employees to cross local borders through virtual means, creating new employment opportunities for women in areas otherwise not exposed to such access.

The Future is Flexible

Gone will be the days when the woman is questioned for attending a parent-teacher

meeting for her child, but the man is not. Currently, women do spend more time on household responsibilities than men. Though that is changing, the option of flexible timings will ease the difficulties of females, especially those that are mothers. The 9-5 will not be a rigid phenomenon, set in stone. Employees will be much more likely to offer flexibility rather than taking on the risk of losing valuable female talent.

The Future is Authentic

Considered the “beauty tax”, prevalent is the idea that women, in order to look “presentable” before walking out into the world, have to spend extra time, money, and effort. On one hand, research suggests women who take more care in their appearance earn higher incomes. On the other hand, conventionally attractive women are seen as less capable or less qualified for their positions. In the future, authenticity will be of utmost importance, and women will be able to bring their whole selves to work and be true to themselves. Sexist conduct and attention for appearance-related characteristics will decrease.

The Future is Entrepreneurial

The number of women-owned enterprises has been increasing both nationally and internationally. Driven by a desire to have more control over their careers, females will feel empowered to tap into the freedom, creativity, flexibility, and fulfillment that comes with building and running one’s own businesses.

PICTURES COURTESY: ADOBE STOCK

The Future is Automated

As McKinsey & Company puts it, technological advancements and automations are bound to replace certain jobs. That said, women are expected to be slightly less impacted than men in regards to this trend. Machine operators are more likely to be replaced by automation, and women make up less of this workforce portion. That said, technological disruptions will still impact women, especially those that carry out routine work tasks. Therefore, females will need to be skilled, mobile, and tech savvy to adapt to the new world of work.

The Future is Empowered

As cultural policies are strengthened in workplaces and fair procedures are implemented, women will feel more empowered to report and bring into the limelight any harassment and/or microaggressions at work. Pay disparity will be addressed and the grass ceiling is already beginning to crack. As women explore more opportunities in accessing management positions, they will also appreciate ways to develop the skills that will help them adapt to workforce changes.

A brighter future is not only possible for females in the workplace, but probable. Affirmed by Deloitte, as competition for talent continues to intensify, those businesses that act first stand to attract the next generation of women leaders, and will make the biggest gains. Companies will benefit from learning from those who are leading the way in creating a better, more equitable future. Ambitious and hardworking, the inclusive and empathetic qualities of successful female professionals will create better workplaces for all, propelled by work that is less prone to burnout and more meaningful in nature.

SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN

Breaking Barriers and Going Places

Darpan Magazine’s March-April issue has become synonymous with the spirit of International Women’s Day. In the year 2020, the magazine decided to bring to the fore South Asian women living in British Columbia who have found their purpose and voice and are willing to share their stories to inspire others in the community.

Keeping up with the tradition, this issue marks the fourth year as DARPAN celebrates the achievements of seven women steering clear of stereotypes and forging their own paths. While each comes from a different professional background, they are all resilient, hardworking and fully committed to their calling in life. n December 7th, 2022, Niki Sharma was appointed the Attorney General of British Columbia, the first woman of colour to hold this position across provinces in Canada. As someone who has been a part of the justice system for almost two decades, she understands it can work for or against the people. The realization drives her to show up to work filled with gratitude and ready to make a positive change.

As Attorney General, Niki’s core mandate focuses on ensuring the justice system functions equitably and fairly. She is also part of the Indigenous Justice Strategy, which works towards making the justice system fairer and better for the indigenous people. “We’re working on reducing the system’s impact on the indigenous people. It’s something significant, though it will take years; having worked in this field, I find it extremely fulfilling,” she says.

While growing up in a small town in British Columbia, Sparwood, Niki never imagined herself in such a role. She attended Queen’s University in Toronto, studying environmental biology, only to realize she didn’t have a passion for it. So, she took a year off and went to Ecuador, where she tried different projects until she realized she wanted to pursue a law degree. Upon graduating from law school in 2005, Niki worked with a firm focused on indigenous people. She distinctly remembers that it was the time when residential school claims were first coming to the court and survivors were coming forward to sue the government. “Working with the residential school survivors taught me so much about resilience, grace, human spirit, and overcoming adversity,” she recalls. These experiences are a constant reminder of the work she must do to reconcile the indigenous people and their histories.

As someone who always followed her passion, practicing law made her realize that she wanted to work on changing the systems; being in the government gives her an avenue to do that. Niki pivoted into politics when working with Minister Katrina Chen, one of her role models, on a universal childcare plan. “There is a big power in sisterhood, finding that real person who can understand your struggle and give you that perspective and support which makes you feel you can do it,” she says.

In the future, she wants to continue doing her best at her job. She also intends to keep breaking barriers and going places where no one like her has been.

What does being a woman mean to you?

Being a woman means showing up with compassion and empathy and being strong while you’re doing it. There’s something about female power that’s different. It comes from another place, and it’s still powerful.

What has been your most significant achievement?

Becoming the first woman of colour as Attorney General in the provinces. In the legislature, there’s a wall of all the attorney generals in the history of British Columbia, and it starts with these blackand-white pictures of Caucasian men and goes all the way. I walk past it thinking of all the people who have been in this position before me, all the decisions they made, and how different it is for me to be here.

What or who inspires you to do better each day?

I’m constantly inspired – I have daily meetings with people doing extraordinary things in the community. My job is to help them because it will benefit the province. Also, surrounding yourself with people who have that energy, who have that passion, is so important.

What is your advice to women who wish to follow your path?

You have to understand whatever you do in life – there’ll be times when you’ll get knocked down, and you’ll feel like, is this for me, especially when you’re breaking barriers, showing up in spaces where no one like you has been. There’ll be people who’ll doubt your abilities and times when you have to assert yourself. My advice is to surround yourself with people

who know and love you; keep them around so you can talk to them, and don’t give up. You have to believe in yourself, that you are capable and supposed to be here. Stay committed and stay on track.

What’s your success mantra?

I don’t have one, but I’m always thinking about how to do my best with the role and responsibilities I have been given. Every day I wake up wondering how I can be really good at my job.

WENDY MEHAT in Charge, Ridge Meadows RCMP
“ COVER STORY

rowing up in Squamish, BC, Wendy Mehat always admired police officers and aspired to become one someday. It was almost surreal for her to leave Squamish to go to Regina, Saskatchewan, to train when she decided to join RCMP at 20. At the time, she never imagined that one day she’d become the Officer in Charge of the community. In fact, for the longest time, she was happy to serve as the patrol constable until she realized that she wanted to achieve more and have a much more significant impact on the community.

As Officer in Charge, Wendy oversees policing, police response, community welfare initiatives, human resources, and more in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows cities. Amidst all this, she prioritizes the mental and physical well-being of her police officers, who see so much trauma all around them. At the same time, she feels strongly about

supporting youth in the community, particularly those undergoing mental health issues. “After serving in the RCMP for almost 23 years, I’ve understood that the issue of mental health, drug abuse, and homelessness are all intertwined. You cannot formulate responses for one without tackling the others,” she says.

Wendy has previously been part of several policing projects and specialized teams focused on dealing with the Opioid crisis. For instance, during her stint with Surrey RCMP, she worked on several community-facing initiatives that helped businesses, residents, and commuters feel safer. At the same time, Wendy supported those experiencing mental health concerns, addictions, and homelessness within the City of Surrey. For RCMP officers, she created a police mental health and recreation team, which included a mental health liaison officer and a nurse on board that supported those experiencing mental

health issues. She also led a program termed “Project Lavender,” which helped female youth make positive lifestyle choices, engage in healthy relationships, and build a strong sense of self-worth. It also educated and built awareness around sexual exploitation and drug/ alcohol abuse.

These experiences helped her meet some incredible people along the way. It also made her empathize with vulnerable communities and formulate more empathetic solutions to their problems. Wendy advises those inspired by her journey to always set realistic goals and follow through with them. At this point, she’s grateful to be working in her dream job and having an incredibly supportive family. “I’m so thankful to my husband and two daughters who have supported me through odd shifts, promotions, and times when I couldn’t be there for their birthdays and Christmases,” she says.

What does being a woman mean to you?

Being a woman means being strong and standing up for others and yourself. Women can achieve any goals they wish to pursue. Dreams and careers are not gender specific, and know that nothing can stand in your way if you are driven and determined to succeed.

What has been your most significant achievement?

While working at the Surrey RCMP, I was inspired to build a program to help young women make positive life choices and engage in healthy relationships. Another professional highlight was engaging with residents and businesses during the opioid crisis. Also, I’m proud of achieving my recent career goal of becoming an Officer in Charge.

What or who inspires you to do better each day?

My two daughters, husband and extended family, inspire me. They helped me find a balance to work on the front lines in a job I loved. It meant supporting me through career assignments that didn’t have typical “9 to 5” work hours. Also, the young men and women who work in my police department inspire me every day. I am humbled to call them ‘my team.’ They are selfless and hardworking, and without their support, I would not be able to achieve the career successes I have today.

What is your advice to women who wish to follow your path?

Set realistic goals. Start small and graduate to more significant projects and tasks as you build self-confidence. It will help ensure you are not discouraged and ready

to quit. And most importantly, be prepared to get out of your comfort zone and take on some challenges and risks along the way. Whenever you do what you thought was ‘unthinkable or unachievable,’ you will be so proud of yourself and inspired to go further.

What’s your success mantra?

Pay it forward by helping others along the way - mentor, coach, and support future leaders and women. And remember to be humble and kind to others along the way. Also, remember that it is okay to make mistakes but learn from them and that every successful person has faced rejection at some point in their life.

Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her business acumen, communication, collaboration, and leadership abilities. But while these are significant achievements and accomplishments, Kam’s more profound reward stems from her ability and commitment to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion for clients, employees, and the community. As a wife and mother of two boys, Kam has always role-modelled a solid moral compass at work and within her home, with strong personal values and ethics that both her children and her peers admire.  Her mantra is surprisingly simple: “Surround yourself with good people

Kam has experienced first-hand the value of nurturing authentic relationships, where you can grow in a safe environment that allows you to pivot and occasionally skin your knee; in doing so, embracing and reflecting on the lessons learned.

From her perspective, the most important gift women can provide other female colleagues and emerging talent is to offer them safe spaces to learn, grow and challenge themselves. When looking back on her career, Kam treasures the advice and guidance she received from trusted advisors who have been invaluable stewards and sound posts throughout her

career. Some of her greatest learning moments have come from receiving feedback that may have been difficult to hear at the time but invaluable to her growth moving forward.

Never one to sit still, Kam has been an active member of her community, continually seeking ways to give back and uplift others.

Despite the countless hours she invests in various organizations and boards, she firmly believes that personal reward and satisfaction come from serving others and contributing to the greater good of society. Being a woman means being responsible and juggling different roles at work and home. Having been surrounded by strong women while growing up, I have never forgotten their impact on my life. I’ve learnt that there are no limitations— nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.”

HEMA BHATT

COVER STORY

This year, Natu Oil Services Inc., one of North America’s largest sustainable refined palm oil suppliers, celebrates twenty years in business. The accomplishment seems even more significant when one considers that an Indian immigrant family from Malaysia started the company in Coquitlam (in a basement) and managed to expand its operations and build offices in five countries, including Canada, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Singapore.

A silent partner until 2014, Hema Bhatt took on the leadership role in the company when her husband suffered a stroke. She had to put out fires immediately, with employees not being used to a female leader on the one hand and the suppliers wanting to squeeze her on the other, thinking that a woman would crumble under pressure.

However, since Hema was

privy to the goings-on in the company, she managed to have the right conversations and convince the team to have faith in the female voice at the top. She also fully stocked the warehouse and brought in many more suppliers to reduce dependence on a select few. “At that point, I realized I was completely alone and had to see our family business through the storm. I had a strategy in place, and I stuck to it,” she says.

As Senior Vice President, Hema oversees the company’s operations, human resources and finance portfolio. She’s also transitioning to work only three days a week so her two daughters can engage more fully with different aspects of the business. Her husband has also recovered considerably in the last nine years and works from home.

Hema was born in Penang, Malaysia, into a family of eight children and wanted to become a flight attendant.

Q&A

However, her parents didn’t want her to leave home, so she joined a travel agency after completing her education in the hospitality and tourism industry. Always a keen learner and a go-getter—she speaks six languages, cleared her driving tests and got her license within a week of arriving in Canada, and is Toastmasters certified. Hema enjoys wearing many hats and is currently chairing the South Asian Health fund at Royal Columbia Hospital Foundation. In 2022, she managed to collect $800,000 through philanthropic grants from the South Asian community. She also believes in leading a balanced lifestyle and doesn’t carry work home. In fact, she cuts off from work once she’s out of the office and prioritizes exercising and spending time with her family.

As Director of Operations, I’m continuously thinking of newer, more inclusive ways of marketing the team,” she shares.

TARANNUM THIND

Host & Producer at Chai with T Podcast

COVER STORY

Born to parents who were passionate about performing arts and theatre, Tarannum’s childhood shaped her for a career in mass communication. She grew up surrounded by her parent’s friends, mostly theatre personalities whose conversations revolved around literature, world drama, and poetry. She loved listening to their stories and, in the process, developed an inherent connection and deep empathy for people from creative backgrounds. During her summer holidays, she would perform on stage for the theatre group started by her father for the neighbourhood children. In 1997, Tarannum immigrated to Canada with her family and tried her hand at different study programs. Her dream, however, was to study Broadcast Journalism at BCIT. However, while still on the waitlist in 2003, she auditioned and got selected to host a multicultural show on Channel M in Hindi and Pun-

jabi. It began the professional journey of one of the most sort-after, familiar, and personable South Asian media personalities in Vancouver and beyond.

After hosting and producing numerous shows for TV and radio, and voiceover work for hundreds of commercials, she is ready to release her podcast, Chai with T. This name suggests chai with Tarannum but also alludes to the “Indian masala chai,” often referred to as “chai-tea” in Canada. She believes her podcast could be the bridge between the two worlds, a safe space where people can have the hardest of conversations. “I’ve been preparing for this for the last 20 years. There’s so much bubbling inside me that I want to share with my listeners. I almost want my podcast to be the balm that soothes my listeners and makes them realize that they can get through anything,” she says.

Through her podcast, she wants

Often, we don’t want to share our vulnerabilities, but these conversations are important,” emphasizes Tarannum.

Her advice to those wanting to follow her path is to learn from every experience and be 1000 percent ready when the opportunity arises. She also believes nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you’re willing to work on your craft and give it your all.

KIRAN TOOR

President, Kids Play Youth Foundation

Kiran Toor is one of those rare individuals who discovered her calling early in life. As a daughter of immigrant parents from India, she found her mentor in Kal Dosanjh, a veteran police officer with the Vancouver Police Department, who motivated her to be a part of something bigger than herself. Thus began her journey with the Kids Play Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Kal that allows youth to become involved in sports and other recreational programs, steering them away from drugs and gang violence.

As president of the organization, Kiran collaborates with leaders and volunteers in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto in Canada; Punjab in India; Columbia; and Uganda, who help facilitate multiple programs across six streams, which include sports, mentorship, education, counselling & mental health, environment, and community engagement. “We want to provide creative outlets to the youth to give them a sense of belonging and self-worth. To ensure that they come on board, we remove all financial barriers,” emphasizes Kiran.

The organization also supports and offers free counselling to women undergoing post-partum depression so that strong mothers can raise infants and children since growing up in dysfunctional families is one of the primary reasons why kids fall into the trap of drug abuse and gang violence.

Until now, the Kids Play Foundation has supported over 100,000 youth who have undergone multiple programs with the organization free of cost.

At this moment, Kiran is busy preparing for the Mental Health Gala on May 5th at the Arya Banquet Hall. Through the event, the organization aims to raise funds from the community to help support its multiple programs and review and share its successes and failures from the previous years.

Not the one to be deterred by either, Kiran has learnt to take both success and failure in her stride. Raised by her maternal grandmother in Himachal Pradesh, India, she is mindful of not letting her ego get in the way of her work and always reminds herself to be grateful. She considers all the wonderful people around her her biggest superpower and aspires to continue learning and giving back to the community.

What does being a woman mean to you?

A woman can be strong yet vulnerable, resilient but empathetic. As a woman, I want to be true to myself and those around me. I have the power to understand myself, accept myself and make this world a more welcoming and accepting place for all.

What has been your most significant achievement?

Understanding and accepting that I am not perfect. Knowing I will make mistakes and that is the only way to learn. Learning to be kind to myself; giving myself the respect I want to give others. We are all seeking a sense of belonging, and my KidsPlay family has accepted me; now, it is my job to ensure I make this platform both inclusive and welcoming.

What or who inspires you to do better each day?

My loved ones. Fortunately, I have the most beautiful family at home and KidsPlay Foundation. We work hard for each child participating in our programs to keep them on the right path. We recognize that their social circumstances, family environment, or mental health may not be “ideal,” which motivates me to work harder every day. Their resilience inspires me to keep on going.

What is your advice to women who wish to follow your path?

Just do it. You don’t always need a plan or have everything in order. Embrace the spontaneity and make this a place for all of us to belong. Strong women have raised me, and I continue to surround myself with resilient women. I have learned from my Nani (maternal grandmother) and mother that if you don’t see the path, start paving it yourself. Also, be kind, love yourself, and go easy on yourself.

Love makes the world go round. Given that humans are inher ently social animals, a sense of belonging, partnership, and companionship can be integral to happiness. While there are many sources to making such connections, a prominent way that has exponentially grown over the last decade is that of online dating platforms. However, there still exists a gap in the online dating market for South Asians looking to build genuine relationships, propelled by a solid, data-driven platform. Here to fill that gap is the founder of state-of-the-art online matrimonial site, called Eternal Strings, Gail Bains. Rewinding to her background, Gail’ professional journey has always been full of exciting opportunities. After coming to Canada in 1986 with a diploma in Interior Decorating and a Bachelor of Arts that was no longer recognized in a new country, she began working at a fabric store. In April 1989, while on maternity leave after having her son Arvin, she completed a teller training course and quickly landed a part-time job with a bank. Within a week, the hardworking and motivated new employee was offered a full-time position because of her impressive work ethic and quick learning abilities.

Despite having a daughter with special needs in 1991, Gail continued to advance her career, working her way up from Part-Time Teller to Customer Service Representative, and eventually to Mortgage Sales Manager. After 17 years in banking, the caring mother made the difficult decision to leave her job in order to be more available for her daughter’s doctor appointments. Still motivated to succeed professionally, Gail then took a course at the University of British Columbia to become a realtor.

Yet again, she quickly excelled in her new career, leveraging her exceptional customer service skills and in-depth knowledge of the real estate and mortgage industry.

As Gail grew her network over the years, one thing she observed is how people around her were struggling to find suitable relationship matches. Over time, she began feeling the urge to create a solution and the idea for Eternal Strings was born. Gail details, “Empathy drives me. I was always passionate about being of assistance to others. With a strong background in sales, marketing, and a passion for helping others, I decided to launch Eternal Strings. Through this new venture, I hope to create a platform where people can connect and find their perfect match with ease and convenience.”

Eternal Strings finds its roots in the idea of assisting people in creating meaningful connections, through bespoke matchmaking skills, a secure platform, and technology. Dating can be a daunting experience; one may not know what expectations to set. Gail understands this concern faced by people and its repercussions as well. The importance of finding a compatible partner can play a crucial role in building a fulfilling life. Eternal Strings’s well-thought process is what sets it apart from other applications. The overarching goal is to make the journey of finding love seamless and enjoyable. Launched in March 2023, Eternal Strings can reach South Asians and other individuals residing anywhere in the world. That said, while matchmaking is a beautiful process where two individuals are brought together to form a bond for eternity, many myths about matchmaking need to be addressed. After working for almost two decades in the finance department of some of the largest enterprises in Canada, Kal Grewal realized that she doesn’t need to work for other brands – that she possesses the knowledge to be a brand herself, a name to reckon with in the accounting industry in Canada. Daughter of immigrant parents who came from Daulatpur, Punjab, India, in the 1970s and made Nanaimo, BC, their home – Kal built her career from the ground up through sheer resilience and hard work. While growing up, the odds were not in her favour. For instance, she could not attend a university outside of Nanaimo as her parents weren’t comfortable sending her to another city which restricted her study options to what was available at the local college. Moreover, as a woman, she was expected to prioritize marriage over her career. Fortunately for her, at 21, she married a man who supported her ambitions.

Determined to succeed, she enrolled in the CGA program and started juggling a full-time job, school, and a newly married life, along with becoming a mom to her first son at 23. “It was challenging, and I still can’t believe I did it. I’m so grateful that I could pursue my education; it came through for my family and me during tough financial times. I want the women out there to know that if they are resilient, they can achieve anything,” she says.

By the time Kal completed her certification, she had already worked with companies like Jim Pattison, Teck, and Saputo. She ran her husband’s business for the next few years and joined Intrawest in 2006. She grew from Assistant Controller to the Director of Finance and even started teaching Accounting at the Vancouver Community College. Her next challenge was Boston Pizza, where she led IT project that focused on cloud based paperless workflows.

Here, she had an epiphany – she realized she could leverage her vast, progressive experience with large enterprises to create full-service, cloud-based accounting firm for small to medium sized businesses. She understood that AI technology created a level playing field for SMEs to get real-time reporting without investing substantial capital into the financial reporting infrastructure.

In 2018, Kal started her venture, Realtime CPA, intending to provide full accounting support and business advisory to small and medium businesses. From a girl who started with zero connections in the industry, Kal today has represented clients such as Glowbal Restaurant Group, Nuba and Riversol Skincare. She empowers businesses by offering fixed-value pricing that includes advisory, financials, tax, back-office support, and more. Soon, she aspires to lead workshops and seminars to help individuals learn accounting basics, including bookkeeping and setting up cloud-based accounting systems.

Bharathi comes from a background of strong female leaders. Her mother was a trailblazer in her industry. She was the first female South Asian family physician in Abbotsford who taught her the value of working hard to serve and build her community, and she has left a legacy and impact.

Bharathi is a Senior Business Development Specialist at Raymond James Ltd. She jokes that the title “Senior” reflects tenure, not age, as 18 years in her industry would qualify as “senior.” She has successfully built a practice that focuses on long-term, holistic financial management. She is passionate about development and education for the up-and-coming generations and helping people break real and perceived barriers.

Non-profit work is very close to Bharathi’s heart as she was raised in a family that first believed in seva or service. Bharathi thinks women can make strides and be in more prominent leadership roles because of their problem-solving capabilities and ability to bring diverse skill sets. Bharathi herself demonstrates this in every step of her journey.

Bharathi highlights her leadership positions in three organizations in Abbotsford that are typically male-led. The Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association, Dasmesh Punjabi School, and the Fraser River Community Crematorium Society have or have had Bharathi on the board. Her day job is also in a typically male-dominated industry, the experience of which has strongly prepared her for other roles. She often was recruited in positions of leadership based on past performance. She has quantifiable deliverables directly reflective of her time on those boards and believes it’s essential to show some growth for the time spent on a project.

Bharathi currently is the chair of the Fraser River Community Crematorium Society as the first female chair and, by far, the board’s youngest member. In addition, she sits on the Abbotsford Hospice Society board and the King Haven Peardonville House Society board. She believes in helping people at critical turning points, such as losing a loved one or in the depths of health issues. This is a significant shift from her previously business-related community endeavours.

Fighting for a Cause

By Mrinalini Sundar

n advocate for immigrant groups, especially after the September 11 attacks, Pramila Jayapal, is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from Washington’s 7th congressional district since 2017. “So many of the issues I’ve fought for have two things in common — they’re uphill battles and the right things to do. In Washington, D.C., I’m fighting for the same issues, but I’m counting on you to keep building this movement to get there,” she states. Jayapal founded the Hate Free Zone, an organization after the attacks. Media reports say, “Hate Free Zone registered new American citizens to vote and lobbied on immigration reform and related issues.” The organization even sued the Bush Administration’s Immigration and Naturalization Services to prevent the deportation of over 4,000 Somalis across the country. The White House recognized this organization as a “Champion of Change.”

Born into a Malayali family in Chennai, India, to Maya Jayapal, a writer, and Jayapal Menon, a marketing professional, Pramila Jayapal spent most of her childhood in Indonesia and Singapore. She moved to the U.S. in 1982, at age 16, to attend college and earned a B.A. from Georgetown University and an MBA from

the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. “I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to live the American Dream, a dream that is out of reach for too many immigrants today. It is significant to me that I will now be in this position to move the needle better and recenter our broken immigration system around dignity, humanity, and justice. As I step into this role, I would also like to thank Representative Lofgren for her years of dedicated leadership on the Subcommittee. I look forward to continuing to work with her,” she says on her website.

Politics was not always on Jayapal’s mind. In an interview with GreenAmerica, she said, “I never thought I’d go into politics, but after 15 years of working to get the things done we need to do, I realized it’s important to have people from the movement, people who can help organize in politics, and to get immigrants, women, and people of color in politics—people whom you don’t have to explain everything to.”

Commenting on the comprehensive immigration reform, Jayapal, says, “Our immigration policies should reflect our values of family, human dignity and work.” She also introduced the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act, which would phase out the use of for-profit immigrant prisons and drastically overhaul the nation’s immigrant incarceration system to eliminate human rights violations.”

Other than fighting for immigration rights, Jayapal also has long been a “champion for a $15 minimum wage, racial justice, the PRO Act to support workers’ rights, reproductive justice, the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, and climate action so we finally transition to a 100% clean energy economy while prioritizing environmental justice and ensuring everyone has access to clean air, safe drinking water, and

public lands,” states her website.

Pramila Jayapal won her Congressional election bid and became the first Indian-American woman in the House of Representatives in 2017. Before entering the House of Representatives, Jayapal served in the Washington State Senate from 2015 to January 2017.

Jayapal wants to make sure America continues to welcome refugees. She commented on her website saying,” America has always been a country that has welcomed refugees from around the world who are escaping economic, political and social turmoil. It is critically important for America to play in a world of global migration where more than one billion people are moving. We should accept refugees in numbers that reflect America’s international status in the world and history of compassion. We should also provide them the support and services needed here.”

According to an interview in GreenAmerica, Jayapal spoke about allowing Muslims and refugees into the U.S. and that this could make the country less safe or that they’re taking away jobs. She said, “All research shows that immigrants don’t take American jobs. They fill voids American workers don’t want to serve, particularly in low-wage jobs. If we were to raise wages, we would find more people wanting those jobs. We need to level the playing field so no one is being exploited and everyone has a fair shot.

As for security, this has been a red herring for a long time. The current ban doesn’t make us safer; it makes us less safe. I was talking to some very high people in the Iraqi government. There’s tremendous fear that we are playing right into the hands of people wishing to do us harm, who one official said were “clapping and gleeful” because [Trump’s executive order] helps to drive a wedge between the people they are trying to recruit and the U.S.”

She lives in West Seattle with her husband, Steve Williamson, a long-time labor leader. She is also the proud mother of a transgender child named Janak and the stepmother to Michael. She is the author of two books, Pilgrimage to India: A Woman Revisits Her Homeland and Use the Power You Have: A Brown Woman’s Guide to Politics and Political Change.

Seema Sandhu

With only 13% of Canadians employed in the construction industry being women, meet the accomplished Seema Sandhu, who is breaking stereotypes and excelling extraordinarily in the field. Born and raised in Calgary, Sandhu often thought, growing up, that her career would be in the fashion and design realm. Shortly after realizing that these weren’t her passions, the enthusiastic professional began working with a development firm, as Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Development and Construction. Continually trying to figure out where she wanted to take her career, Sandhu began attending school part-time while working full-time. As things began getting busier at her firm, Sandhu’s job started expanding into more of a project coordinator role. She absolutely loved being part of a team that was building a major project. As she saw the project evolve, she began enjoying the construction aspect of the project and started asking questions about getting more involved in site activities. After her tenure as a Project Coordinator, she transitioned to her current role as Manager of Construction. Fast forward to today, Sandhu has an impressive portfolio, having worked on noteworthy projects, like:

• CORE Redevelopment: Calgary, Alberta ($400 Million)

• Calgary Airport: Calgary, Alberta ($1 Billion)

• Defence Canada Facility: Victoria, British Columbia ($350 Million)

• Brentwood Town Centre: Vancouver, British Columbia ($350 Million)

• Oakridge Park: Vancouver, British Columbia ($1 Billion)

Although Sandhu undoubtedly works in a male-dominated industry, she recalls that the leaders she worked with didn’t just see her as a woman, but saw her simply as a professional trying to get the job done, “There have been tough situations where I worked with individuals who saw me as just a girl trying to make it in a man’s world, but I ignored all that noise and reminded myself who I truly am.”

Throughout her journey, Sandhu’s family and friends have been her biggest cheerleaders, be it working long hours or making a big move to leave the city she grew up in to move to a place where she didn’t know anyone - all so Sandhu can achieve her goals. “My family and friends are my backbone, pushing me to keep going even when I doubt myself.”, shares the go-getter.

Invested in her field with her whole heart, Sandhu continues to develop herself by taking courses and getting involved in industry events or her company’s Women in Transaction group. Forever thankful to the people at 20VIC, EllisDon and QuadReal for the opportunities that have helped shape her, she now gives back by mentoring multiple individuals in the community. To other young professionals, Sandhu’s recipe for success entails a combination of passion, hard work, and perseverance. As the powerhouse of a woman herself puts it, “Be brave enough to live according to your values, even when that means making unpopular decisions.”

Looking to invest in real estate for rental income and gain equity?

Alberta might just be the best bet right now, as even with elevated interest rates, overall conditions in Alberta make it one of the most enticing places in Canada to invest or even settle down to build a life.

Alberta’s recent GDP growth, increasing population and a resultant boom in new jobs across different industries, is what makes it an attractively affordable province for newcomers and migrants from other parts of Canada.

Cities such as Calgary and Airdrie are poised for positive economic and population growth in 2022 and 2023. In fact, Calgary was ranked the third most livable city in the world last year by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU). Migration to Calgary has since skyrocketed. That strong population and job growth are expected to bring the unemployment rate down, drive business creation, and

boost consumption.

“What is attracting the majority of the newcomers is the relative affordability of housing in Alberta,” says AJ van der Linden, Alberta Sales Manager at Vesta Properties. And this diversified homebuilding and development company has always been a big believer in Alberta’s potentials.

Vesta Properties is an integrated builder/developer with over 32 years’ experience building primarily master-planned communities within BC & Alberta. A pioneer in building sustainable and self-sufficient communities, Vesta is

known to offer high quality homes along with high end amenities, proximity to schools, shopping, services, and transit accessibility.

“Locally here in BC, Vesta is the exclusive builder and developer behind Latimer Heights, the largest master planned community in Langley’s history with more than 2,000 new home styles including Langley’s very first two high-rise towers” van der Linden says.

In Alberta, Vesta already has three major land developments under its belt. It all started with Luxstone in Airdrie in 1999. Today, Southpoint in

south Airdrie, and Copperstone in south Calgary, as well as a new community inside the Cooper’s Crossing, set to begin sales in Fall 2023, continue Vesta’s legacy of building top quality, affordable, stylish homes in master-planned, family-friendly communities.

Copperstone and Southpoint, its two 70-Acre master-planned communities currently selling in Alberta, offer homes that provide excellent investment opportunities.

Copperstone, located in SE Calgary, offers Modern Single-Family homes that can come with the added investment option of a Legal Income Suite. Copperstone also offers 2- or 3-bedroom townhomes starting from under $400,000.

Southpoint is located in Airdrie and is just a few minutes north of the boundary with Calgary. Here buyers can find six unique investment home options including Back-to-Back or Urban Townhomes, Rowhomes, Duplex or Single-Family homes, each offering unique investment options starting from under $400k. Southpoint also offers unique outdoor amenities including a basketball court, tennis court, dog park, picnic areas, children’s play areas and toboggan hills.

“We have recently announced

the addition of Southpoint Village, a 38-acre master-planned commercial development which will be located directly east of the Southpoint residential site. The commercial development will feature big box stores as well as smaller boutique style shops and services, a restaurant alley, offices, Automall and centralized pond with a boardwalk perfect for an evening stroll of bike ride,” says van der Linden. This future development can only boost the growth prospects of your investment here.

“Our home prices in Alberta are significantly lower compared to those in BC, however what is most important is our home prices in the greater Calgary region are on the rise, making investing here even more appealing,” says van der Linden.

Along with this affordability, Alberta offers stable infrastructure, top schools, friendly people, easy access to the Rockies, and overall quality of life that lets Calgarians enjoy an enviable lifestyle. “There’s nowhere else right now that’s a better place to build a life and raise a family,” van der Linden says. Whether investors are looking to rent out an entire home with an added income suite in the basement, invest in a rental townhome, or even choose to create income with an Airbnb unit, Vesta Alberta has the style of homes to fit your investment needs.

“Vesta believes in securing your investment by securing the best locations in the right

neighbourhoods and building quality homes so we can deliver the best lifestyle and investment value in every community we build,” he adds. “Our planning, design and building processes create superior value and a smart investment opportunity.” Calgary is well ahead of Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal for home price attainability and overall lower cost of living. “We can hope for Airdrie to join the big city league in the future as growth in Alberta stays steady. Investment in Alberta may be the boom you have needed in your investment portfolio,” van der Linden says.

SNEHALAYA

Dr Girish Kulkarni’s NGO, Snehalaya, strives every day to ensure that every child and woman has the right to live a life free from inequality, cruelty and discrimination.

We are often programmed to ignore certain sections of society; even talking about them or moving around their habitats is considered taboo. While a bunch of progressive thinkers may speak about the stigmatisation and ostracisation of sex workers, only a handful are bold enough to come forward and make some efforts to build an inclusive environment for them and their families.

Dr Girish Kulkarni — a former journalist, a professor, a PhD scholar and an active social worker — belongs to the latter-mentioned tribe, and Snehalaya is his endeavour to bring that positive change for the ones who society likes to ignore.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of Antyodaya, which means the rise of the last person,

Home of Love

Dr Girish Kulkarni’s NGO relentlessly works for the welfare of children and women who face injustice and exploitation.

Recalling the moment that led to the start of Snehalaya, Dr Priti Bhombe, spokesperson for Snehalaya says, “Dr Girish Kulkarni was eightyear-old when he started taking a shorter route to go for his tuition classes. This route took him through one of the city’s red-light areas, where he saw girls his age sitting outside brothels and selling their bodies to the highest bidder. Even at this young age, the injustice of the situation had a profound impact on him. Especially, when he witnessed a naked child, contracted with syphilis, being beaten and

tortured, as she would no longer be able to work. He felt extreme helplessness, and his inability to intervene haunted him into early adulthood. When he started college, he was reminded of what he had witnessed when a friend took him home to the red-light area where his mother, sister and grandmother were all sex workers. He had joined youth volunteer organisations, but their slogans of changing the world did not seem to offer the direct action he felt was necessary. Realising that his own time and resources were limited but also wanting to ease his conscience, he decided to at least do something. He approached some sex workers to ask how he could help, and they asked him to save their children. So, each day Dr Kulkarni would turn up to pick up two children and take them to a park, buy them snacks, tell them stories or teach them how to ride bicycles. Word soon spread, and within four months, he was entertaining 80 children and was building the trust and

respect of the sex worker community.”

Remarkably, Girish was hardly a 19-year-old young lad, when he embarked on this small project, which soon translated into his lifetime mission. Dr Priti adds, “In 1989, Dr Kulkarni founded Snehalaya, appointing three sex workers as trustees. When HIV and AIDS started ravaging the community, Dr Kulkarni set up a ‘Death with Dignity’ program, where a few roadside huts and a bike attached to a cart provided palliative care to some of India’s first AIDS casualties.”

Dr Girish Kulkarni’s actions,

three decades ago, are proof that the smallest acts have the power to bring about a sea of change. Today, Snehalaya has saved countless lives and has given dignity back to those marginalised by society. The NGO works across 23 projects in rehabilitation, health, and education and spreads awareness about social issues about women, children and HIV AIDS, wherein nearly 200000 people have befitted from its initiatives.

Thanks to Dr Kulkarni’s persistent effort, today, there are no underage women in the flesh trade in the Ahmed-

nagar district of Maharashtra, India. He has also ensured the rehabilitation of sex workers and their children by stopping second-generation prostitution. His organisation, Snehalaya’s, commitment to ensuring a life free from inequality, cruelty and discrimination for every woman and child has brought several admirable achievements. It has been estimated that Snehalaya’s healthcare projects’ attempts have helped reduced sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, by 90 per cent in Ahmednagar. The number of HIV cases has dropped from 17 per cent to 3.4 per cent, while the number of STDs have dropped from 56 to 2.3 per cent. Currently, over 2000 children are enrolled in extracurricular and educational classes in Ahmednagar’s slums as well as over 20000 people have benefited from the support services that Snehalaya provides. Snehalaya also provides vocational training at the IT centre in the city for over 200 young people. To further work at making the environment for marginalised sections of society more inclusive, Snehalaya has also been inspiring and mentoring over 25 grassroots non-government organisations to work on important social issues. Snehalaya and Dr Girish Kulkarni’s noteworthy work was also much-admired on the TV show Satyamev Jayate, which was conceptualised and anchored by Indian film actor Aamir Khan. Snehalaya has also been honoured by Dr Durgabai Deshmukh National Award for its outstanding and innovative contribution to women’s welfare and empowerment for over three decades.

Snehalaya’s dedication towards empowering women, children and LGBT communities affected by poverty and the commercial sex industry is undoubtedly commendable and applaud worthy, however, it has not been an easy journey.

We carry a large selection of designer & fashion sunglasses, frames, contact lenses & accesories

Talking about the challenges faced by the organisation, Dr Priti discloses, “Initially we faced major challenges as the work done was totally against the tide. Snehalaya faced bullying and pressure from societal elements, brothel owners, people in high places with vested interests in the sex industry, and many more. Dr Kulkarni was often threatened by the so-called white-collar citizens and the who’s who of the city for trying to uplift the lives of sex workers. When a major sex scandal about the trafficking of minor girls was busted by Dr Kulkarni and his colleagues, the majority of the big names in the district were exposed. Those were highly testing times, but ultimately the results were great as the criminals were sentenced to 22 years of double life imprisonment. After this incident, Snehalaya’s work has been recognised far and wide, and the challenges have reduced.”

In its 32 years journey, Snehalaya has been a pioneer in working on the most burning issues of society, and with changing trends, Snehalaya has made it a point to include newer initiatives. “We have also changed how we reach out to our beneficiaries/donors/stakeholders, but also continue with some of the age-old time-tested ways. are our life members and employees. All of them have a say in the policies of Snehalaya. This helps us to identify current needs of the communities we work with, increasing the possibility of success in whatever we do,” informs Dr Priti.

Though it is primarily an employee-driven organisation, we welcome some of the best volunteers from across India as well as abroad. Snehalaya has encouraged more than 25 new social organisations and their group of founders to start work in their areas on issues which are prevalent in their work area. SPRING

Chic-plaid Shackets

A shirt-jacket hybrid, shackets have become the cool girl item. While it made a big splash last year, this year, too, it is a hot have among girls. One can pair them with a fitted blouse and jeans or can even wear them with loose tees and trousers. Mostly a boyfriend style-fit, plaid shackets are the perfect clothing item for a casual day outing.

Spring is a few months away, and it is time to spruce up your wardrobe with timeless spring fashion. Biker jackets, plaid shackets and timeless trench coats -- bring them back from your closet and mix-and-match for the upcoming season. Here are a few things you could look into...

Quilted Shirts

Quilted shirts are a spring fave for many. While the shirts can be a little tacky, if you wear the right fit and pair it well, you can make a statement with this look. This one, too, can be worn with oversized trousers, and tees and pair it with cool shoes. It is a versatile shirt, depending on how you want to style them.

Leather Jackets

Classic leather jackets never go out of style. From oversized ones to fitted styles - the biker chic look is the go-to style statement to look cool. The only trick here is to style it nicely. If you wear a black leather jacket, go for a sleek all-black look. You could try a worn-in style if your leather jacket has aged well. Pair these jackets with turtlenecks, wide trousers, a vest or even a plaid mini skirt.

Timeless Trench Coats

Another timeless fashion that never goes out of style is trench coats. You have them in belts, buttons and various colours and prints that one can use to add a touch of class to your look. Mostly worn with fitted trousers, this item of clothing is so stylish that it can elevate your look. Ensure you wear that right footwear, though, and keep your accessories minimal.

Cashmere Cardigans

The soft knits in button down, V, round, and turtle neck styles are a classic. You could even skip your regular tops to wear this for a classy look. And the best part is that these cashmere cardigans are available in so many colours and styles that one can wear them for dinner, a party or even for a date.

Our goal is cultivating long term relationships. We help our clients invest, but also inversely invest in our clients, by providing sincere advice and guiding clients to make the right decision.”

Rahul & Aman

POWER COUPLE REDEFING THE

REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY

BUSINESS PROFILE “

Dedication. Innovation. Drive.

The Gill Team’s invincible power couple Rahul Gill and Aman Gill personify these ideals beyond brilliantly. This award-winning duo of leading agents in the Surrey real estate industry boasts over $1.8 billion sold in real estate — a feat that is not simple to accomplish, but if anyone could have done it, it is The GillTeam! Given their years of experience, impressive property portfolio, celebrity clientele, and unparalleled knowledge of the market and pedigree estates, the impressive pair’s estimable business is highly sophisticated and well-renowned across the Lower Mainland.

Having closed more than 1,800 properties since 2004, the husband and wife have attained an average of 100 sales a year since then. Among many commendable achievements is Rahul and Aman’s participation in the reputed Straight Medallion Club, which recognizes the top tier of real estate agents as per the transactions they complete on a yearly basis. Rahul and Aman have been making their mark as part of this club for 17 years and counting!

As such, it is of no surprise that The GillTeam has also been in the top 1% for real estate sales and production throughout the Fraser Valley for almost two decades. Exemplifying what it means to be the perfect pair, Rahul and Aman are taking on the real estate market by storm with their unique combination of competence and expertise. Accredited buyer and seller specialists, the fearless leaders are well-tenured licensed real estate agents. Their umbrella of unbeatable services spans across the areas of luxury marketing, residential real estate sales, development pre-sales, development land, and commercial land.

“Our goal is cultivating long term relationships. We help our clients invest, but also inversely invest in our clients, by providing sincere advice and guiding clients to make the right decision. Ultimately, for a fruitful client-agent partnership, it is essential for clients to do their homework, but also trust professionals who have been in the market long

enough. ”, says Aman. Of course, with experienced professionals like the GillTeam, clients can absolutely feel at ease that their finances and decisions are being handled and facilitated by capable hands. In fact, having earned the esteem and admiration of associates, the industry pros have built an incredible network of fellow agents, which has allowed for the couple to reach new heights. Serving a range of diverse clients, Rahul and Aman are also trusted names with noteworthy A-list celebrities, who have unwavering faith in the duo’s recommendations and business sense.

Rahul shares, “We deal with everyone authentically and treat clients as friends. Every client is equal to us. Our goal is to genuinely help clients make the best, most timely decisions, which will evidently maximize their wealth in real estate. Ideally, we want to ensure a 10-15% value extraction after 3-4 years of a client’s purchase. Whether you are buying for the first time, purchasing for the second time, or investing, we educate everyone to make the right investment through honest advice.”

Relevant for the coming decade, The GillTeam points out some interesting trends to keep in mind. Firstly, there is an anticipation of growth in investments from India, especially in light of increased immigration post-COVID. Prominent Indian business tycoons are approaching business leaders in Canada for investment purposes. Although all of Canada is lucrative, the province of British Columbia is undoubtedly the sweet spot, thanks to its attractive temperamental weather and enticing cultural scene — for incumbents and new entrants alike.

For first-time buyers, The GillTeam encourages them to make a move as soon as possible, now that prices are down, as princes may shoot up again in 6-7 months. Clearly, the dynamic nature of the real estate market creates a pressing need for choosing the right realtor that can offer effective analysis and make informed, robust recommendations. Aman explains, “In real estate, there is never a bad time to buy. A strategic investor will

not look at whether the market is hot or cold, but more so at what the projected five year plan entails. If someone today tells you not to buy, then they are wrong. Interest rates have gone up and mortgage rates may be higher, but the same low prices will not prevail tomorrow. Although higher mortgage payments will be a reality in the short term, investments will pay out when properties eventually sell for higher prices down the road. However, many realtors do not educate clients about such details and fail to provide thorough explanations to investors. After all, it is a numbers’ game.”

As Rahul comments, real estate prices never go extremely low, and a 5-10% end-of-year increase can generally be expected for every type of property, making the real estate industry an alluring space. Moreover, clients can be assured that they are getting intel from top-tier professionals who are qualified, skilled, and knowledgeable. The GillTeam utilizes a team approach and has a production-first mindset to provide optimal results. The focus is on managing client wealth in the field of real estate, but Rahul and Aman’s business principles are also widely universal in life, relationships, and personal growth.

Propelled by honesty and hardwork, the GillTeam is a beacon of trust in the real estate industry. Helping people invest in one of the fastest growing places in the world is not just a job, but a passion for the power couple. As Rahul puts it, “This is what we have been doing since the last 18 years, and this is what we will keep doing for years to come!”

Surely, Rahul Gill and Aman Gill have built more than just a business. They have emerged as inspirational entrepreneurs and role models, creating an entire empire, accented with a legacy of prosperity, determination, and growth for all!

When you’re building a home, they say to choose every piece you buy with utmost care and thought, as you will live for a long, long time. But there are elements in our homes that you don’t relate to or wear out owing to their longevity. While it is impossible to keep changing the look of your house every year based on the new trends, we could do with some ideas from what this year’s trends offer. Here are some.

Earthy Tones to Art Deco Themes Spruce up your Homes with the Latest Trends

Earthy Tones

One might have reservations about the Kardashians, but they sure know how to deck up their homes. If you look at the most famous Kardashian, Kim’s home, you will notice that she swears by earthy tones, a popular home trend in 2023. From her wall paint to dishes and the décor – Kim seems to have mastered the movement of earthy tones. Earthy tones are your bet if you are a fan of minimalistic looks. Shades of brown, mauve, pink and creamier whites are in.

Fabric Lighting

Some time ago, fabric lighting took the lighting scene by storm; it looks like it’s making a resurgence. The soft tone and ambient glow will add a contemporary vibe to your place. You could either go for printed fabrics or plain ones, depending on the theme of your home. Create pretty corners by adding these lights, sure to add exquisiteness to the home.

DARPAN Decor PICTURES COURTESY: WWW.PEXELS.COM

Art Deco Theme

If you love rich colours, licentious details and geometrical decorative details – go in for an art deco theme. While it may be a vintage style, they sure bring a lot of glamour and luxury to your space. The colours of this style include deep reds, pinks, greens, yellow and softer beiges. If you’re going for art deco, ensure the furniture, fabrics and lighting are in sync with the colours. With these in place, you’re making a big statement in the interior design space.

Go Chic with your Workspace

Sure, work can get monotonous and boring sometimes, but the workspace shouldn’t, right? And luckily, there is no dearth of inspo when you’re designing your workspace. If you’re going in for the chic look, you’re sorted. Home décor stores give you plenty of options when you’re going in for the chic look. Hang large pieces of art, buy pretty trash cans and stationery holders, outline the space with rugs that go in the theme, and lastly, invest in unique furniture that is both stylish and work-friendly.

Nature Light Galore

In an ideal situation, we’ll all be blessed with a spacious home with plenty of natural light play in places we most need – kitchen and living room. But well, if we’re not, we can always play with the space to bring in the natural light. Frankly, dungeon-y and cave-like spaces aren’t the positive outlook we need in our lives. In order to bring in some light, make some changes to bring more natural light to your space. Going in for a white theme and changing your darker dishes to their lighter cousins are sure to do the trick. Yes, they’re sure to burn a hole in your pocket, but look at this as a one-time investment.

Curves and Arches

If you’ve binged watched the latest season of White Lotus, you’d notice that the Italian décor was all about curves and arches. Famous interior decorators usually add a curve to make the room look more inviting and cozy. Many a time, the horizontal and vertical lines can get a little wearisome. Adding these versatile curves and arches brings about an organic change to the otherwise dull space. However, these work only if you have large spaces. But if you still want to try it out, you can do so by buying curved mirrors or a wardrobe to see how it looks.

Rani Mukerji in Mardaani

This was not another cop story portrayed by the superstars of India. Mardaani revolves around the issues of drug racket and child trafficking. Police inspector Shivani played by Rani Mukerji, uses her manliness to search and kill the people behind the flesh trade and the kingpin who kidnapped and sold her adopted child into overseas sex rackets. It was amazing that the filmmakers chose to show Rani as a gritty police officer, a nurturing foster mother, and a family woman. Her balancing act received a lot of applause and was also a close depiction of a woman officer’s life.

The Changing PorTrayal of Women in

INDIAN CINEMA

Indian cinema has been around since 1896. Yet women’s repre sentation on and off the camera is limited and often fewer when compared to their male counterparts. Despite Indian cinema being trendy and attracting masses from all spectrums of society, women are often reduced to misogynistic roles with significantly less screen time. Then, there is the issue of pay disparity, objectification, and the biggest of them all - the casting couch. Having said that, this is not a story that has set out to bash Bollywood and its ways. The portrayal of women has changed over the years. Women started as the ever-loving, over-protecting love interest for the man, to a woman

with different shades. The women who portrayed mothers in the 70s and 80s could do no wrong and were worshipped by the heroes. Women sacrificed, worked hard, loved harder, and were the epitome of beauty.

Today’s women portrayed in Bollywood are very different. They are flawed; they can be selfish, have negative shades, and are as human as possible. Movies and web series portray women’s challenges in the real world, the emotional and circumstantial pressures women face, the pressures at the workfront and fighting society and male domination. Enough data also back all these statements. According to a landmark report

by Ormax Media and Film Companion in association with Amazon Prime Video, there is a fundamental mismatch regard ing women’s representation in movies in India. The report stated that “Only 10% of head of department positions (HODs) across key divisions (production design, writing, editing, direction and cinematog raphy) are held by women. Out of the 56 theatrical films analyzed across multiple languages, not one was directed or edited by a woman. In media and entertainment corporations, only 10% of senior leader ship roles were held by women.”

We want to appreciate a few movies where women depicted more substantial roles and were the center of the storyline.

Meher Vij in Secret Superstar

The story centers around a 15-year-old girl. The film highlights her talents while also showing the painful problems of being a female in a patriarchal society. The actual superstar of the film is undoubtedly Meher Vij, who steals every scene. She has portrayed the role of Najma (India’s mother) with utmost sincerity. She truly loves her daughter but is unable to support her singing aspirations. She is also incompetent to stand up against her husband but constantly wishes to do something for the kids is portrayed spectacularly.

Tapsee Pannu in Thappad

This important social drama is hard to ignore. Tapsee Pannu plays the lead role in this story, which revolves around the sensitive issue of domestic violence in Indian society with great sensitivity and straightforwardness. The movie questions the unsaid rules of marriage and whether a slap can still be considered domestic violence. Educational world stated, “Tapsee Pannu was particularly commended for her transformative performance from the submissive wife to the no-nonsense woman demanding her rights.”

Kajol in Salaam Venky

Kriti Sanon in Mimi

A small-town girl with aspirations to make it big in the movie industry jumps at the opportunity to become a surrogate for an American couple who cannot conceive and offers her a handsome amount of money. When the couple ghost her, Kriti decides to keep and raise the baby, especially after discovering that the baby might have Down syndrome. The film highlighted issues like Down syndrome, surrogacy and how women face society when they become surrogate mothers.

Featuring the very talented Rajkumar Rao, Bheed will shed light on the difficult circumstances that India experienced during the lockdown. Commenting about the film, director Anubhav Sinha said, “Bheed is a story that sheds light on the social disparity that the country faced in the toughest of times. It was imperative for me to bring this story to life and share it with the audience.” Going by Anubhav Sinha’s last few hard-hitting films — Article 15, Thappad, and Anek, there is certainly a lot to look forward to with Bheed.

If the action-packed teasers are anything to go by, Bholaa featuring versatile actor Ajay Devgn will be an absolute treat. A remake of the 2019 Tamil hit film Kaithi, Bholaa is an action-thriller set on an intriguing premise, where one man fights a multitude of enemies in various forms in one night. It is a story of a recently released prisoner who is on his way to meet his daughter but gets caught up in a dangerous face-off between police and the drug mafia. An action extravaganza, Bholaa shall be turned into a franchise. Ajay, who is also directing the film, said, “It is planned as a franchise. When you see the film, there is a surprise element.” Fronted by Ajay Devgn, Bholaa is supported by powerhouses of talent like Tabu, Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Makarand Deshpande and an alleged cameo by Abhishek Bachchan, which makes the film all the more exciting.

Directed by: Farhad Samji

Starring: Salman Khan, Venkatesh, Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Kaur Gill

Like all Bhaijaan’s films, there is a dizzying amount of excitement for Salman Khan’s upcoming film — Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, and understandably so, especially if one looks at the recently dropped power-packed teaser. From a high-octane train sequence to a jaw-dropping car chase, the teaser gives a glimpse of what to expect from the superstar’s Eid outing this year. While the makers are tight-lipped about the film, it is learned that the core plot of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is based on the 2014 Tamil film, Veeram. Touted to be an action-packed family entertainer, the film also features Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Kaur Gill, and popular influencers Just Sul and Abdu Rozik. What’s more, the film will also have a cameo of South superstar Ram Charan. Speaking about Ram Charan’s special appearance in the film, Salman said at the trailer launch of GodFather, “So, we were shooting in Hyderabad, and Venky (Venkatesh) was there with me during shooting. He (Ram Charan) came to see me. He said, ‘I want to be with you and Venky in the same frame.’ I thought he was just kidding. But the next day he got his costume and was there before us. That’s how he came into the film, and we had a great time shooting.” Will the film be good? Who knows, but it certainly shall have all the Salman-ian swag that the superstar is loved for, which will make this spectacle worth watching.

While some of the things we mentioned are well-known, in this article, I write about some of the things I explored in my recent trip to Goa. It was a six-day holiday with my partner and was filled with things one would not expect in a place like Goa. What are we talking about when we say unusual, unique, etc. Here is a quick list that you can try and fit in a while making a travel plan to Goa.

They play several musical instruments - with some unique or regular sounds. Some are super unknown or unseen; some are regular and beautiful! People are often just very relaxed, are dancing, swaying to the music, having a lot of sparkly lights, showcasing stunts, or just meditating. While all of this is going on, stroll the beach while window shopping from the flea market. From the Russian vanilla cake to homemade soaps and just beautifully designed jewellery, you will find beautiful souvenirs and gifts.

We take the ferry to the island to discover one of nature’s finest bounties and jump into the lake for an engaging clay bathing experience, followed by some comforting home-cooked local snacks & tea at a local house.”

Embodying the shades of earth, sky, and fire, designer Gaurang Shah’s Sindoor is an explosion of colour that unabashedly celebrates the versatility of Indian artisans.

Celebrating Traditions with gaurang shah’s Sindoor

Widely regarded for invigorat ing the weaving traditions of India, textile revivalist and fashion designer Gaurang Shah continues to enthral us with his design aesthetics and creative spins on traditional weaves every season. The latest offering — Sindoor, by his eponymous label GAURANG, once again captures the timeless allure of heritage weaves that have become synonymous with the brand since its inception. Embodying the shades of earth, sky, and fire, Sindoor is an explosion of colour that unabashedly celebrates the versatility of Indian artisans. Speaking to Darpan about his latest edit, the ace designer informs, “Sindoor is a unique fusion of traditional and modern techniques, the result is a dynamic and sustainable collection that has never been seen before. I spent months conducting research for this collection, drawing inspiration from the colours of earth, sky, and fire.”

A confluence of various ancient crafts blended with modern techniques, Gaurang Shah’s Sindoor features a line-up of 40 handwoven dresses adorned with time-honoured weaves such as Kanjeevaram, Paithan, Banaras, Kota, Uppada, Khadi, and Muslin, which have been fused with complex gara, kasuti, aari, chikan, and Kutch embroidery. The pieces are additionally embellished with surface textures of bandhani, shibori, patachitra, kalamkari, and cheriyal paintings. What further adds drama and splendour to this edit is its vibrant colour palette.

DARPAN Style

“The colour palette of the collection includes various shades of vermilion or sindoor, from ochre to crimson, ruby to burgundy. These reds of various tones chosen to create this ensemble add the perfect sparkle to the line-up. The collection also features gold and other neutral shades to complement the vermilion hues,” describes Gaurang before enlightening us about the material used to curate the collection. “In terms of fabrics, the collection primarily features handloom fabrics such as silk, cotton, and chiffon, which were chosen for their durability, comfort, and luxurious feel. The fabrics were carefully selected and are of the highest quality to ensure that the garments are comfortable to wear and will stand the test of time.”

The mesmerizing edit is essentially conceptualized for modern-day brides who wish to strike a balance between culture and fashionable aesthetics. “I believe that the collection will be loved by contemporary brides who have an eye for revivalist handcraft and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of handwoven textiles. The collection is perfect for all occasions, whether it’s a wedding, an engagement, or any other special occasion,” says the textile expert, whose journey as a designer began at a young age when he would sit in his father’s small sari store and envision a future for

DARPAN Style

long-forgotten handlooms. Reminiscing the days of yore, Gaurang says, “I spent my college years travelling the length and breadth of the country, convincing weaver families that there was still potential for their craft if they were willing to change. I have now built a team of over 800+ weavers and my label “GAURANG” personifies the elegance and captivating beauty of traditional handlooms, and weaves, created using the Jamdani technique with pure zari on cotton and silks. I have been able to make a significant

impact in the world of handloom fabrics, uplifting the weaver community, and bringing diversity into their weaving technique, particularly in the villages of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Kolkata. I am the initiator of the Jamdani Weaves Wave in India and have done this by following my single-minded vision of making Indian weaves popular.” Gaurang’s relentless effort to revive the fading weaving traditions of India has not only earned him national laurels but has also brought him global recognition. Today the designer

proudly supports over 600 handlooms across India, specially engaged in the jamdani weaving technique. A pinnacle of artistry and craftsmanship, each creation at Gaurang is a wearable art and the Sindoor collection is no different. Even the name of the collection resonates with Indian traditions.

“The name ‘Sindoor’ for my collection was chosen for a few specif-

DARPAN Style

ic reasons,” reveals Gaurang. He continues, “First and foremost, Sindoor is a traditional vermilion powder that is applied by married Hindu women in the parting of their hair, and it has been used in Hindu rituals for centuries. The collection is a celebration of the rich hues of vermilion that have been used in Hindu rituals for centuries and the versatility of handlooms, so it made perfect sense to name it Sindoor. Additionally, Sindoor is also symbolic of the sacred bond between a husband and wife, and it is a symbol of love, commitment, and devotion. I wanted my collection to embody these values and convey the message of love and commitment to tradition and the art of handloom. Furthermore, the collection is also a tribute to traditional Indian beauty and culture, so naming it Sindoor, which is a well-known traditional element in Indian culture, was a natural choice. All in all, the name Sindoor was chosen to reflect the collection’s inspiration, the traditional Indian culture, and the values and emotions that it represents.”

Interestingly, the muse for the Sindoor edit had been none other than, the vivacious actress — Aditi Rao Hydari. “The inspiration for my Sindoor collection was actress Aditi Rao Hydari,” reveals the couturier, who is also loved by other Bollywood belles like Vidya Balan, Sonam Kapoor, Chitrangada Singh, and Sonali Bendre.

The designer, who has introduced many innovations in saree including the big border further mulls over his muse, “I was struck by her beauty and grace, and I wanted to capture that in the collection. She was

the perfect muse for this collection, as she personifies the elegance and femininity that I wanted to convey through the designs. Aditi even walked the ramp for me at the Lakme Fashion Week. She was particularly stunning in a shimmering, gold brocade lehenga and matching choli, as well as a vermillion, sheer dupatta adorned with delicate, floral embroidery. These pieces served as the foundation for the collection, and I drew inspiration from the colours, textures, and patterns used in them to create the rest of the pieces. Overall, Aditi’s natural beauty and poise, paired with the rich and eternal beauty of our Indian handcrafted fabrics and traditional motifs, became the perfect inspiration for the Sindoor collection. I am honoured to have her as my muse for this collection.”

Further elaborating on the collection, Gaurang says, “This unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles showcases the rich heritage of Indian handlooms and the combination of various crafts, making the collection stand out in the fashion industry. The collection is not only beautiful but also sustainable, which makes it more appealing. Additionally, the colour palette adds a distinctive vibrant touch to the collection.”

Sindoor can be purchased from the brand stores in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Or patrons can connect through Gaurang’s Instagram handle @gaurangofficial or their Facebook page.

Q: Where did you meet?

We met the new school way… Bumble!

Q: What do you love most about one another?

Baltej: She cares about the fine details and makes a huge effort to always make everything perfect. She makes my life so much better in every way and always knows what I need. She gets excited about the smallest moments in life and always finds a way to celebrate them!

Kiran: I love how selfless Baltej is. He is always going above and beyond to help his family, friends, and sometimes even strangers he meets throughout the day! He is beyond caring and always puts his best effort into everything he does. I love seeing him succeed after all of the energy and efforts he puts into every aspect of life. It also helps that he always knows how to make me laugh!

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

Baltej proposed on the 3rd anniversary of our first date! The day felt significant from the moment I woke up and Baltej asked to take me out to get my nails done and then go for a nice dinner. We ended up driving around Stanley Park as it was a beautiful frosty, yet sunny winter day and I had no idea Baltej was stalling us for the perfect moment… he had been visiting places around Vancouver at various times of the day to gauge when the perfect moment would be. He then drove us to Ambleside Park, where we had the perfect backdrop of the Lions Gate Bridge, a setting winter sun, and lush greenery. It was a beautiful moment that was immediately followed with dainty snowflakes falling on us… as if the moment were meant to be. I would find out later during our wedding morning that Baltej had hired a secret photographer to capture the proposal!

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?

Our favourite moment from our wedding day was the feeling of peace and contentment after the fourth laavn. We both immediately felt a wave of calmness and oneness and it was a beautiful feeling to share for such a special day in our lives.

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?

After months of planning the reception came together exactly how we had hoped it would. We greeted our guests for a cocktail hour. During our cocktail hour we also had a portrait style photobooth and fresh churros! We made our grand entrance as Mr. And Mrs. Sekhon to the song Jindua (the Snoop Dogg remix). The evening was full of heartfelt speeches from our siblings and friends, performances, and the wonderfully cinematic next-day-edit organized by A Master Media. We performed our first dance to A Whole New World which remixed into the song Sunoji Dulhan from the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain. It was the perfect evening full of delicious food, a great DJ, and dancing our hearts out with our close friends and family!

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

Kiran- My wedding outfit was designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Intricate detail, thread work, and 3D hand embroidery riddled the lehenga which was paired with a sweetheart neckline blouse and 2 dupattas, one draped across the front in a traditional style, and the second, a veil covering my head. The veil was elegantly encrusted with crystals which shimmered while trailing behind me. My mother chose my wedding lehenga and she has always been my style icon so it was a moment I will forever cherish. My reception lehenga was also designed by Tarun Tahiliani. It was an elegant cream color with accents of pastel pink and pistachio in the border. The blouse had beaded detailing which flowed with the lakhnavi embroidery throughout the lehenga.

My wedding event jewelry was customized from our family jewelers in India. For my wedding day I wore a gold and polki tiered set, complete with hand pieces, a nath, tikka, and statement earrings. The most meaningful piece of jewelry I wore was my late grandmother’s karas with my choora. On the evening of the reception, I wore a gold meena kundan set complete with earrings and a tikka. My pre-wedding event outfits were customized from boutiques in India and Phulkari by Patiala Fashions in Payal Business Center.

Baltej- My wedding achkan was designed by Anita Dongre. It was a pastel pistachio green color with green and cream embroidery embellishing the jacket. For the reception I wore a custom tuxedo by Jason Sarai. The entire experience of customizing the tuxedo was luxurious and tailored to my needs, which was exactly what I had hoped for!

Q: Where did you honeymoon?

Since our wedding, we have been on a slew of “minimoons” including, San Fransisco, Napa, Los Angeles, and New York. We are planning our tropical romantic getaway for later this year!

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

Our goals are to continue building a strong relationship through open communication, emotional understanding, and mutual support. We want to push each other to do the best in our careers and reach new heights. Our most important goal is to always have fun and find joy in all the big and little moments in life.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

Knowing we can rely on one another regardless of how difficult or strenuous any challenge is, but always remaining in high spirits and making each other laugh.

Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

Our advice would be to be clear with your goals and wishes upfront and always remain open and honest with each other. Make time for each other, regardless of how busy life gets, and show appreciation for one another often.

Benchmark for full-size Premium Motoring

Introduced for the 2021 model year, the larger-than-life Cadillac is back in 2023 mostly unchanged and still representing one of the most luxurious and technologically-forward options to transport a full load of passengers. Here’s why.

Designers have done a great job translating the appealing boxy aesthetic over to the new fifth generation. Signature traits like the massive crest-shaped grille — featuring chromed slats on Darpan’s Platinum Luxury press loaner — vertical running and taillights and huge 22-inch polished alloy wheels return but are reinterpreted, and there are some contemporary twists such as the LED headlamps taking on a super-slim horizontal appearance.

Built on the GMT1XX platform similar to stablemates the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, the SUVs share certain accessories including the powered running boards that deploy and retract when the doors are opened or closed. This is a great help for ingress and egress as the vehicle measures 1,948 millimetres high.

Cadillac sets a new benchmark in terms of cabin comfort and convenience. The Whisper Beige interior is beautiful, the caveat being after only half a winter of use the semi-aniline leather upholstery and carpeting was already looking worn.

The crown jewel however is the industry-first 38-inch curved OLED display, stretching nearly the entire width of the dashboard housing a digital instrument cluster and infotainment controls. Connected on the left-hand side is an info panel where drivers can activate a nifty Night Vision infrared camera (+$2,300), which projects an enhanced low-light view of the road ahead and highlights pedestrians and large animals in bright yellow. And new for 2023, an electronic version of the owner’s manual is now available to view right on the main screen.

Audiophiles will love the 36-speaker AKG Studio Reference stereo, powered by three a amplifiers,

Zero Emissions Twinning

There’s a good chance people have seen the latest Genesis Electrified G80 and not even realized it thanks to the car’s remarkable resemblance to its internal-combustion sibling. This all-new offering is one of the best-looking examples in the zero emissions mid-size luxury sedan segment, and doesn’t drive half bad either.

“The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification,” says Genesis global head Jay Chang in a news release during the model’s reveal in Asia back in 2021.

Designers have cleverly left signature styling cues intact like the Crest Grille, which is completely solid since there’s no radiator behind to feed with fresh air. Instead, the charging port is cleverly concealed in the upper right corner behind a one-touch-open panel. While the hidden location provides a seamless appearance, short charging station cables might prove challenging. Besides a slightly modified bumper, rear exhaust tip delete and different alloy

wheels the vehicle is almost indistinguishable from the non-EV version. In other words, the same Two-Line language is present, seen in the thin LED head and tail lamp shape, fender repeaters and elsewhere around the exterior. The roof line still bears a steep slope towards the rear that meets a slightly raised trunk lid lip, complemented by a fullwidth chrome garnish and emblem. The interior is no less premium and features the same fully digital 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and expansive 14.5-inch infotainment display. Controlled via touch or the dual rotary knobs the system is a joy to use and is world’s better than many examples found in competing products. The wireless Apple CarPlay

Dual 136-kilowatt front/rear electric motors generate a net 365 horsepower and whopping 516 lb-ft of torque. The instant performance coupled with a soft, floaty adaptive suspension was enough to make me a little motion sick the first few times I drove. Make no mistake the Electri-

fied G80 is quick, though the battery does add hundreds of kilograms of weight and the 4.9-second 0 to 100 km/h time is only a tad faster than the gasoline-consuming 3.5T V6 variant. On the topic of the battery (mounted beneath the floor and resulting in slightly less cabin and trunk space compared to the latter), range is estimated at 427 kilometres on a full charge. In real-world wintertime operation, the number is a bit lower if heated seats and the like are activated. Depending on the rating of a Level 3 station, a top-up to 80 per

cent can take anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes.

Attached to the steering column are a pair of paddles that change the amount of regenerative braking force to siphon energy back into the powertrain, and at the maximum setting is able to bring the four-door to a complete stop when the foot is off the pedals.

TOYOTA Mirai Making

Hydrogen Great Again

After a successful, ground-breaking run with the first-generation Mirai, Toyota is doubling down on a hydrogen-powered future and is introducing an all-new model. This time built on the same global GA-L rear-wheel drive underpinnings shared by the Lexus LC and LS, the environmentally-friendly four door is totally reimagined.

“The Toyota Mirai changes everything about personal mobility –offering drivers an advanced powertrain that produces zero emissions and is as fast as gas to refuel,” says Toyota Canada VP Cyril Dimitris in a media release. “But above all, the new Toyota Mirai is a vehicle that drivers will choose because it’s a gorgeous sedan that’s fun to drive – and that just happens to be a fuel cell electric.”

Appearing much longer and more luxurious than before due to the platform change, the front fascia retains a sleek, slightly futuristic aesthetic now wearing longer bi-beam LED headlights designed to animate in a sweeping motion at start-up. Directly below are match-

ing horizontal signature daytime running lights flanking a massive contrasting and horizontally-slatted black Camry-esque grille and silver-coloured lower lip. Retaining coupe-like styling with a fastback roof, the light bar running across the trunk returns although the previously chunky lower taillamps have been integrated neatly on the ends. Standard 19-inch or optional 20-inch alloy wheels completely the premium-looking package.

supple and is complemented by copper coloured door and centre console trim. Overhead an expansive panoramic moon roof lets in natural light, and the surrounding headliner incorporates some neat technology. The top side has a reflective layer to block infrared light reducing heat build-up in the cabin, in turn easing the load on the air conditioning system helping conserve energy.

Infotainment is an area Toyota has traditionally fallen behind on compared to competitors in the marketplace, and the unit here is not the most intuitive either. For example, while the physical heated seat controls are located on the dash, the heated steering wheel toggle is inexplicably digital and buried in the submenus. The Premium JBL Audio stereo does sound good, though.

Powering the vehicle is a second-gen fuel cell system converting stored hydrogen into electricity, feeding a single motor sending 182 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque to the back wheels. Real-world range on a full tank is around 600 kilometres. Though certainly not fast, the quick acceleration makes you forget about it and in many ways, the response feels similar to a traditional internal combustion automobile rather than a high-strung EV. And the only “emissions” created? Pure water, expelled out of a spigot mounted underneath the car.

Factor in the aforementioned rear-wheel layout, plus near 50:50 weight distribution, and the sedan really provides quite a pleasant experience behind the wheel — and may even cause a little bit of a tail slide around corners in the rain.

Of course, infrastructure remains a challenge — there are all of three stations in the Lower Mainland (located in Vancouver, Burnaby and North Van), with one on the island. If this chicken and the egg scenario resolves itself however, Toyota is really proving battery electric propulsion might not be the only answer.

Volvo C40 Recharge

Electric Trailblazer

As Volvo continues to electrify its offerings, one of the more recent entries is the C40 Recharge that represents the first model in the lineup to be manufactured purely as an EV with no internal combustion variant. Built on the same platform as the popular XC40 Recharge but boasting a coupe-style rather than conventional roof, read on to find out what separates this derivative apart.

While both exteriors look strikingly similar from the front wearing solid panel front grilles, Thor’s Hammer-DRLequipped LED headlights and angular front bumpers, the similarities end past the front doors.

The C40’s roofline takes a dive as it approaches the rear giving a sportier appearance at the cost of second row headroom (there’s 440 millimetres less than the XC40) and some cargo capacity. The sliver of a rear window, a common issue of fastbacks, reduces visibility as well. Rather than boomerang-shaped taillights, here the lamps take on a sort of bent paperclip shape with the top portion meeting two black-painted spoiler fins. Inside, the cabin is standard contemporary Volvo fare though for the first time no animal leather is used.

Instead various eco-friendly materials are applied to surfaces, such as the partially recycled Fjord blue carpets and fabric door cards that really liven up the interior. Similarly, the huge fixed panoramic glass up top, surround by a cool black headliner, bathes the space in natural light.

Like the XC40, the infotainment system consists of a large portrait-oriented nine-inch touch display running on a fairly intuitive Android OS. As opposed to select competitor vehicles in the luxury segment choosing to delete the instrument cluster, a large 12.3-inch data screen above the steering wheel displays virtual gauges in addition to a plethora of other customizable information including navigation maps and battery charge status.

Though the C40 is a cutting-edge EV, the classic Scandinavian design doesn’t give drivers the impression they’re operating an overly futuristic automobile and may serve to ease the transition to zero-emissions motoring for certain buyers.

Two 150-kilowatt electric motors, one installed at each axle, provides propulsion rated at approximately 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. No slouch in the acceleration department, the official 0 to 100 km/h time is 4.7 seconds making for a fun time behind the wheel rain or shine thanks to full-time all-wheel drive.

A high-capacity 78-kilowatt-hour battery yields approximately 360-kilometres of range on a full charge, which takes around 10 hours at Level 2 or as little as 40 minutes (to 90 per cent capacity) if plugged in at 150-kilowatt Level 3 station. An excellent brake regeneration system utilizes kinetic energy created when slowing down to juice up the cells anytime

the accelerator is released or the brake pedal is depressed, without the need to touch the shifter or tug on any paddles.

The Volvo C40 Recharge is sold in three trims — Core, Plus and Ultimate — and starts at MSRP $59.950. Delivery times continue to be variable, impacted by global semiconductor delays, and consumers are advised to contact their local retailer for an estimate.

life. However, with time, I started feeling more settled. Now, after a few years of living here, I can honestly say that Canada feels like home. I have grown to love this country and all that it has to offer. I am grateful for the experiences I have had and the memories I have made here.

Meet the Gupta Family

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

As an Indian citizen, I came to Canada in search of better opportunities and citizenship. I was previously living in Tanzania, Africa and was trained as an anesthetist and a pilot. Canada has a strong economy and a welcoming environment for immigrants, making it an attractive destination for those looking to start or grow their business. Additionally, the Canadian citizenship process is known for being fair and efficient, making it an ideal place for me to establish my long-term home.

Which year did you immigrate?

We came to Canada from Tanzania, Africa in 2018

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?

We rented a house from a friend from Africa when we first moved to Canada.

The first two years in Canada were quite challenging. The cost of living is quite high and we had to make significant financial investment to enroll our kids in a private school. Additionally, we were starting our businesses from scratch, which required a lot of hard work and dedication. It was a hectic period, and we had to juggle multiple responsibilities. However, as time passed, we gradually got accustomed to the new environment and started to feel at home. Now we’ve managed to establish our businesses and our kids feel comfortable in their new schools.

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

I had no Canadian experience, so securing a job in Canada was quite hard initially. It took a lot of perseverance and determination, but I am glad that I was able to find a job that I am passionate about.

How has your journey in Canada been so far?

My journey, so far, has been quite a rollercoaster ride. When I first arrived, I found it very challenging. The transition was difficult and I struggled to adjust to the new way of

Biggest problem

Moving to Canada has been a challenging experience and involved overcoming several hurdles. Getting a PR and navigating my way around the medical system have been the biggest challenges for me. Finding a family doctor and booking appointments was extremely frustrating experience. Also, it was hard to find the right job because I didn’t have Canadian work experience.

Advice for immigrants Memory

First, do your due diligence before making any big decisions. Second, seek multiple sources of income so you can be financially stable. Third, save, save, save! Finally, don’t hesitate to buy your first house in Canada. It’s a great investment and will give you a sense of belonging. It’s also a great way to build equity.

I often find myself missing my homeland. I consider both India and Africa my home, since I have lived in both the places. I miss a sense of community and culture that both the places offered, and it often makes me nostalgic. Nevertheless, while I’ll always chesish these memories, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience different cultures and ways of life.
