1 Since your tenure with the SPS what have
DARPAN
you observed regarding public safety in Surrey?
Since taking this job three years ago, I have been impressed by the willingness of residents, businesses and organizations to partner with police on improving public safety. Surrey is a very engaged city with many people who want to help. To me this is key because the safest communities are those where there is a collaborative approach to public safety. Our officers have responded to thousands of calls for service, providing us with good insights into some of the key public safety issues. Surrey Police Service will work with the community on important issues such as gang prevention, traffic safety, property crime and other matters that directly impact residents and businesses. I am very excited for the future of policing in Surrey. We are looking at a lot of initiatives to provide Surrey with an outstanding and modern police service including use of body worn cameras and drones, having some two-person vehicles for more efficient police response, and providing our officers with advanced medical training to better respond to traumatic injuries before paramedics arrive. 2 Do you feel Surrey residents have had
enough in the battle between Surrey RCMP vs Surrey Police? It’s important to clarify that there is no ‘battle’ between the two police agencies in Surrey. While there have been disagreements about the policing transition, those have been between the two levels of government and other groups. I certainly recognize that residents are tired of the uncertainty and politics that have surrounded this transition – I think it is safe to say that we all are. Fortunately, with the clear direction from the Province that Surrey Police Service will be the future of policing for Surrey, we can all now move forward.
3 Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke is unhappy
with the decision, she has launched a petition in BC Supreme Court in an effort to stop the transition from the RCMP to a municipal police force. What are your thoughts on Mayor Locke's decision? Policing is an important and consequential matter for any municipality. It’s understandable that people are going to have different opinions when such a big change is being made to policing. While I’m aware of the Mayor’s position on policing, that is something for her to sort out with the Province. At SPS, our job is to build a local, progressive, and community-based police agency for Surrey. It is my hope that, in the future, we can have a positive and productive relationship with Mayor and Council.
4 There has been a lot of animosity with the
policing issue. According to you what will that relationship building process look like and how open do you feel Surrey residents would be to that relationship? The provincial government has made a decision that the transition to Surrey Police Service will continue and that decision is now enshrined in law. SPS is here to stay and we are honoured and excited to be Surrey’s

police requiring at least two officers to attend to ensure everyone’s safety, two person vehicles provide a more efficient and cost-effective response for these calls. Arriving separately can place the first officer at the scene in a precarious position of potentially sacrificing personal safety to intervene immediately or having to wait for backup while the safety of the public might be compromised. It is also important to note that twoperson vehicles do not mean we need more officers – they are simply a better utilization of the officers we have. 7 According to you about 45 per cent of the
frontline right now are SPS officers. Do we know how many SPS officers are actually needed?

new police service. Our officers have already built many strong relationships with Surrey residents, organizations and businesses, and that work continues every day. Trust is earned and relationships are built over time – SPS is committed to investing in this process. 5 Former top RCMP commissioner Peter
German will also be advising the city on the petition and judicial review, if approved by the court. German called the city’s reversal plan “sensible.” “The warnings about higher costs and inability to recruit frontline officers for the Surrey Police Service have all come true, and the city has an obligation to act in the public interest,” said German in a statement. Do you agree with Mr. German's remarks? As a legal matter that is before the courts, the judicial review needs to remain free of interference. However, I will say that the best predictor of future abilities are past accomplishments. In less than 3 years, we have hired 400 employees and deployed over 250 officers into direct service to residents. Interest in joining SPS remains strong across the country, and our financials are regularly posted on our website.
6 There has been some disagreement at
a council meeting on your plan to have 2 officers per police car which you have defended whereas the majority of Surrey RCMP officers patrol alone. So how do you hope to have your plan of 2 officers per patrol car ? Two person vehicles provide an enhanced police response for victims, and greater safety for responding officers. With approximately 40 percent of calls to
DARPAN

The number of SPS officers that are required is contingent on two key factors: the budgeted and approved strength for police officers in Surrey, and the needs and priorities of the community. The current strength for the Surrey RCMP (including deployed SPS officers) is 734, with the City previously stating 25 officers will be added annually, to 2027. To date, SPS has 336 police officers with more arriving in the coming months. 8 How can Surrey residents feel assured that
service is timely as often there have been long wait times when residents have dialled 911 emergency? The policing issue in Surrey has been determined with the final decision made by the provincial government on July 19th. With respect to police response, both SPS and the RCMP are committed to providing quality policing service. While the current operations are controlled by the RCMP, once SPS is in charge of policing, we will look at how we can improve call response and police response for residents.
9 What does a plan look like for 2024 for
policing for Surrey residents?
You will definitely see an acceleration of the policing transition in 2024. While the exact plan for the hiring, deployments, and demobilizations of officers for 2024 is currently being determined by the three levels of government, SPS and the RCMP, you will certainly see many more SPS uniforms in the community next year. Residents may even some SPS marked vehicles next year if we are given the green light to start using our fleet. Throughout 2024, we will continue our commitment to work cooperatively with all stakeholders to ensure the policing transition remains fiscally responsible and community focused. 10 What's a message you would like to share
with the South Asian community?
My message to the community is one of thanks and appreciation. The South Asian community in Surrey is dynamic and generous, and part of what makes the city so great. We have been greeted with kindness at many events and when we are out on patrol. SPS is committed to working with the South Asian community and all communities in Surrey to build strong relationships in support of public safety for all. Thank you for sticking with us through this historic policing transition as we work to build an outstanding police service that is inclusive, modern, and tailor-made for Surrey.

she found solace in expressing herself and being creative. Her inclination for the performing arts profoundly evolved, driving her to explore acting as a medium of self-expression. Her acting career took an intriguing turn when she was recently cast as the antagonist, "Kim," in the Canadian Punjabi film Sardara and Sons. This character's complexity, embracing negativity and empowerment, drew Sasan. On the film set, she had the unique privilege of learning from seasoned actors like Yograj Singh and Pankaj Batra. Their creative synergy inspired her to bring out her best. Though challenges have been a constant companion on her journey, including the patience required to navigate the waiting game in the entertainment industry, the driven go-getter never gave up. "It has taken me ten years of actively working to have a feature film at hand — years and years of non-stop auditioning, training, and working on the craft.", shares Sasan. Balancing her multiple passions and callings is intuitive for Sasan. She also encourages her children to explore their creative sides and remain open to the universe's guidance while remaining dedicated and disciplined. Sasan's commitment extends to both her acting career and her business ventures. She aspires to work with filmmakers who share her passion for authentic storytelling while striving to add social value as a business owner. Undoubtedly, Sasan's move to Canada at the age of 20 didn't distance her from her Indian roots; it became an opportunity to showcase her culture with pride and humility, whether through festivals, fashion, or cinema. In her remarkable journey, Sasan exemplifies the power of pursuing one's passions, embracing creativity, and staying true to one's dreams. Her commitment to the worlds of art, fashion, and cinema truly serves as an inspiration. The power-woman's advice to young aspirants is simple yet profound: "Believe in your inner desires and dreams. DARPAN SPOTLIGHT
We're thrilled to represent Surrey, especially because positive news doesn't always stem from this area. Now, being a part of this, many recognize us as the NASA kids, and that's a source of immense pride for both us and our community"
A
team comprising ten eleventhand twelfth-grade Princess Margaret Secondary School students has qualified for NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). They are one of the 72 teams globally and the only team from Canada to qualify for this challenge, which involves creating a human-powered rover capable of navigating Moon and Mars-like terrains, accommodating two individuals, and folding into a compact 5" x5" cube for transport to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. Enthusiastic about NASA's initiatives, Jeevan Sandhu, who currently leads the team, and Mehul Bhanot and Omar Arain discovered the challenge just two days before the deadline. With a race against time, they managed to bring more people on the team and submitted a 10-page proposal and a 3D model just minutes before the cut-off, which, to their disbelief, became one of the 72 entries to get selected.
Jeevan credits their innovative use of non-pneumatic tires in the proposal—an idea they picked from the book "Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down"—for their selection. These airless tires are ideal for space travel where traditional pneumatic tires wouldn't function. Having completed the second stage of the challenge, the team has submitted a detailed proposal outlining their rover's design and subsystems to the NASA engineering team, which will review and provide feedback on it. Jag Uppal, who teaches business and computer-related courses at the school, is on the team as the teacher advisor. "Having a teacher advisor was one of the prerequisites for the challenge, so when the team approached me - I immediately said yes as I wanted to give youth a chance and was excited to see what they could accomplish," he shares. Next on their agenda is constructing the rover, which is set to be shipped by mid-April. Soon after, the

team will head to the challenge site, where they'll navigate simulated courses and obstacles across a 1.5-mile terrain. Excited and looking forward to giving their best to the challenge, Mehul from the team shares: "We're thrilled to represent Surrey, especially because positive news doesn't always stem from this area. Now, being a part of this, many recognize us as the NASA kids, and that's a source of immense pride for us and our community". As the team continues to learn and make their way through the challenge, they seek community support and funding, totalling $50,000, to make necessary arrangements for a trip to the NASA facility in Alabama and acquire essential resources such as 3D printers, laser cutting tools, and higher-grade construction materials for the challenge. They've contacted universities for assistance and are also open to guidance from experienced individuals to refine their rover design. "We're meeting and interacting with people from the community to arrange resources, planning workshops for elementary school kids, which is another prerequisite of the NASA challenge, and trying to stay on top of this challenge all while balancing our academic classes —it's a lot, but we're enjoying every minute of this," shares Jasmeet Dhaliwal from the team. Looking at how driven and curious these kids are and their positive impact on the community, Jag feels the team deserves all the help they need. "They have already grown so much; they're learning about teamwork, building connections, dealing with the media, arranging resources, and so much more. And it's a proud moment for the community - for our kids to go to NASA and represent Surrey and Canada. And they are great role models for the younger kids who are now doing goal-setting and aspiring to participate in similar challenges. So, I urge the community to come forward and support them," he says. So far, the team has received community donations totalling $6,000, and they continue to seek additional resources. Those interested in contributing can contact the school via leocraft.ca or Surrey schools' website or meet Jag Uppal at the school premises. Cheques are payable to "Princess Margaret Secondary School" with a memo written "NASA Competition". Businesses contributing substantial sums can also discuss displaying their branding on the rover, among other marketing strategies, creating a mutually beneficial partnership. We are delighted to support this event and DARPAN magazine. It's always great to meet all the people in the community and have a chance to meet new ones, and there's no better place than this event to do that. Assess Your Current Financial Situation
As the year draws to a close, it is an opportune time to reflect on your financial journey, assess your current financial situation, and set meaningful goals for the upcoming year. Year-end financial planning is about taking control of your financial health and shaping a more secure future. By setting clear financial objectives and adhering to a well-structured plan, you can navigate life's financial challenges with confidence and achieve financial well-being.
Before you can plan for the future, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of your current financial situation. Start by examining your income, expenses, debts, and assets. Create a comprehensive overview of your financial health to identify areas that need attention. This assessment provides the foundation for making informed decisions about your financial goals. Financial Advisor Inderjeet Ladhar suggests, "Simply put, we should always spend money after saving, not the other way around."

Review Your Budget Take a close look at your budget to determine where your money is going. Are there areas where you can cut back on expenses or eliminate unnecessary costs? A detailed budget analysis can help you reallocate funds to meet your financial objectives more effectively.

Set Financial Goals Financial planning without clear objectives can be directionless. Financial Advisor Neena Singh details, "The key financial areas to be reviewed not just at the end of the year, but from time to time throughout the year, are your assets, debts, income and expenses. Key short-term goals should include setting a budget, reducing debt and starting an emergency fund. Medium-term goals should include key insurance policies, while long-term goals should be focused on retirement." Well-defined goals provide motivation and a roadmap for your financial journey.

Maximize Tax Benefits
WE DON'T JUST BUILD HOUSES, WE BUILD HOMES
Before the year ends, consider strategies to optimize your tax situation. Ladhar advises, "Optimizing RRSP contributions ensures tax savings and government benefits, given the tax-deductible nature of the plan. Simultaneously, planning for an FHSA provides a powerful avenue for first-time homebuyers, leveraging tax credits on saved amounts."

Reduce Debt ®
Managing and reducing debt should be a key component of your year-end financial planning. Singh elaborates, "During these challenging economic times, many of us might be experiencing financial setbacks due to the high-interest environment on mortgages, high rents, and increased expenses." High-interest debts, such as credit card balances, can be a significant financial burden. Create a plan to pay down debt strategically, starting with the highest interest obligations.
Emergency Fund Ladhar points out, "People should always be prepared with emergency funds that they can withdraw at any moment of their life." If you don't already have an emergency fund, or if it is not as robust as you'd like, allocate resources to build this financial safety net. An emergency fund should cover three to six months of living expenses, providing peace of mind in unexpected financial crises.

Year-end financial planning is an ideal time to review your estate plan. Ensure that your will, power of attorney, and beneficiary designations are up to date. If you haven't created an estate plan, consider consulting an attorney to establish one.
Insurance Review Evaluate your insurance coverage, including health, life, home, and auto insurance.
Ensure your policies align with your current needs and circumstances. Adjust coverage levels as necessary.
Seek Professional Guidance If you're unsure about your financial planning or investment strategy, it is wise to seek advice from a financial advisor. A professional can provide expert insights and tailored solutions to meet your specific goals. Singh explains, "Meeting a financial planner can help you with your credit planning and free up your cash flow, which will allow you to save for your future and generally help your funds grow faster."
Charitable Giving and Tax Deductions Consider charitable giving as part of your year-end financial planning. Donating to eligible charities not only helps those in need but can also provide you with valuable tax deductions. Ensure your donations are made before the year-end deadline to claim deductions on your tax return.
Review Financial Documents Examine your financial documents, such as bank statements, investment account summaries, and insurance policies. Ensure that all documents are organized and easily accessible. This simplifies your financial management and helps you stay on top of your finances throughout the year. Year-end financial reflection is a valuable practice for securing your financial future. Financial planning is not merely a means to manage your money; it is a powerful tool that empowers you to seize control of your financial destiny. Remember that your financial journey is a dynamic process, and regular reviews and adjustments will help you stay on course to achieve your objectives. Pave the way for a more secure financial future in the year ahead and ensure that your finances are well-managed and aligned with your goals, providing you with peace of mind and financial security!

DARPAN HEALTH
By Dr. Shimi Kang & Jas Hundal
N
ature refreshes us, inspires and even heals us. We know that for a long time, humans have benefited from being around nature, enjoying the fresh air and majestic scenery of lush forests and bountiful rivers. Over the last decade, many of us have followed the global urban living trend, which means working from home and less time outdoors. However, spending time outdoors has various benefits for our brain, including improved attention, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of mental illness and even increased empathy and cooperation. Our connection with nature – how much we notice, think about and appreciate our natural surroundings – is critical in supporting good mental health and preventing distress. Being close to nature, whether hiking through a local park or simply admiring fresh-cut flowers on your kitchen table, can boost your mood and make you more alert and less anxious. Being outside and spending the day at the beach or hiking your favourite trail is easy in the summer. However, many of us would prefer to be curled up on our couch with a hot chai, watching our favourite movie in the cold winter months. To help you get connected with nature in the winter, here are Shimi and Jas' favourite tips to get the mental health benefits without freezing your toes off:

Schedule short walks when the temperature is the highest. If you are an early riser, you will love starting your day with a brisk morning walk. Dr. Kang says, "Walking outside improves one's mood just like light-box therapy is known to help people with mood disorders." It's very effective to be outside because our brains release powerful neurochemicals similar to those you may be trying to promote with medications.
Stay hydrated with a warm drink. We all have our favourite winter drinks, and Jas loves her masala chai, which is steeped with ginger, cardamom, cloves, and fennel seeds. If you need something to warm you up outdoors and make your walk a little more fun, take your drink with you.
Plant a winter garden Yes, you can grow a garden in winter too! Giving yourself a project during winter is great motivation to spend some time outdoors. Kale, potatoes, onions and garlic can be planted and cultivated in winter. You can even reward yourself with some

hot aloo paratha after you have harvested your crop.
Start a plant family! If you don't have that green thumb for outdoors, bring the greenery inside with some indoor plants to help liven up your home. For many people with mobility issues, having some indoor plants will be a great way to be close to nature and reduce psychological stress.

A SAFE SPACE FOR ALL mote self-esteem and instill an increased sense of belonging. The overdose crisis and the rising rates of violence have decimated the community.
"
In a world where the voices of young leaders are more critical than ever, we were thrilled to host the Leader House Conference in partnership with Dr. Randeep Gill, a transformative event aimed at empowering and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow. The conference, which took place on November 12, brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to impact their communities positively. Renowned leaders from various fields shared their journeys and insights, motivating our young attendees to dream big. Youth networked and connected with like-minded peers, mentors, and organizations, fostering collaborations and friendships. Over $2000 was given in scholarships. Over the summer, KidsPlay ran free camps for more than 300 youth in Surrey and Abbotsford. During the same time, Founder Kal Dosanjh and Drug and Gang Education experts Stan Price and TJ Sheehan travelled to Fort St.James in Northern British Columbia to provide workshops for youth to stay safe from drugs and gangs. The Nak'azdli Alternate Justice Program and the Tl'azt'en Nation Justice Program were collaborating on this crime prevention event aimed at deterring the youth of Fort St James from high-risk and harmful behaviours. With this event and the facilitation of positive engagement with KidsPlay, the goal was to strengthen the relationships between the youth in the community, pro-
No one really talks about the gang violence and drug abuse aspect of Surrey. My name is ---, and I got myself into that predicament. This is just the beginning of getting my life back together. Throughout the past three years, I was given drugs in return for inappropriate acts, and with that came being heavily manipulated by someone who I thought was my best friend. The last time I spoke with him was June 13, 2023, but it still feels like I am fighting for my life back. I come to KidsPlay and volunteer, spending time with kids, helping them learn life skills and building them into confident little beings. I am so thankful for this safe space.
Fort St James has the highest Violent Crime Severity Index for British Columbia. Often, youth in the community are divided based on geographical location, cultural identity, gender, social status, and more. This divide leads to bullying, violence, and isolation. These factors make this work so important and why programs such as these can be beneficial to bridging the divide, promoting healthy behaviours, and creating safe spaces. "Our team had the honour and privilege of meeting every one of these youth, and we hope we left the same impact on them as they did on us," says the team upon return. "We also had the honour of participating in multiple cultural ceremonies, such as smudging and pipe ceremonies. Reconnecting with cultural identity will be paramount to healing wounds and fostering growth. These communities need support; we need to stand shoulder to shoulder and help our brothers and sisters…pull them out of the ongoing epidemic of drug abuse and gang violence. These youth and communities deserve an equal chance to success," says Dosanjh. KidsPlay continues to provide free programs and services. Support the cause with a donation this holiday season. You will receive a taxable receipt from the charitable organisation and above all, you will support a child in need. Do your part in ensuring each child gets equal access to achieving their dreams and goals.

hoice School, nestled in East Richmond, British Columbia, has been a beacon of unique and specialized education since its establishment in 1985. This independent school caters to a wide range of students, serving Kindergarten to Grade 9 in the Middle School Program. What sets Choice School apart is its Special Education Designation, granted by the BC Ministry of Education in 2016, recognizing its commitment to high potential, high ability, and gifted students, as well as those with a twice-exceptional designation. The heart of Choice School's educational approach is a commitment to serving gifted students and supporting those with unique learning needs. This is underpinned by an understanding that gifted students often learn and understand differently from their peers and thrive when given opportunities that match their passions. Choice School's mission is grounded in challenging the stigma associated with being labelled as "special needs." Principal Sukhbir Bolina highlights, "Children with unique learning abilities are not wrong or abnormal; they are merely different." Gifted students often face challenges like finishing work more quickly and subsequently becoming bored. However, at Choice School, these students don't have to pretend or stifle their potential. The school ensures they remain engaged and stimulated through a curriculum designed to meet their unique needs. In addition to the regular curriculum, students have an opportunity to participate in advanced classes for Math, English, Social Studies, and more.

Moreover, a cornerstone of Choice School is its small class sizes and experienced teaching and support staff who are wellversed in the academic and emotional needs of each child. Bolina elaborates, "Our classes maintain a small size, typically consisting of just eight students, each benefiting from the dedicated presence of one teacher and one educational assistant. The small student-to-staff ratio ensures that students receive individualized support and attention." To further maintain exceptional standards, Choice School maintains constant communication with parents. This includes regular emails and monthly newsletters to keep parents informed about their child's progress, outlining specific concepts taught in class. Each student also has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which outlines the specific strategies and support tailored to their unique needs, overall making school a positive journey for students. Bolina shares, "There's a remarkable example of a student who has been with us since Kindergarten and is now thriving in Grade 7. This student, who is both gifted and slightly autistic, experiences a unique connection to our school. In fact, he expresses sadness when long weekends come around, as he will be away from school longer. This underscores the comfort, safety, and care that every child at our school experiences. I can confidently say that, without exception, our students are genuinely happy at school." Unquestionably, Choice School stands as a testament to the belief that every child is unique and that the right educational environment can unlock their full potential. The educational haven is more than just a school; it's where gifted minds find a home and their wings to soar.

Akshaya Raman
By Jorge Ignacio Castillo
A
Crafting Indian-Inspired YA Fantasy and Hopeful Narratives
rare Young Adult novel inspired by Indian culture and mythology, "The Ivory Key" debuted to rave reviews in 2021 from Publishers Weekly and Booklist. Set in a world where magic is a physical (and scarce) resource, four perpetually at-odds royal siblings put their differences aside to find the key, believed to unlock an untapped source of magic vital for the survival of the kingdom of Ashoka. Alas, their motivations vary and will lead to conflict sooner or later. Tamil-American author Akshaya Raman wrote "The Ivory Key" as the first in a two-book series. The second part, "The Crimson Fortress," hit the bookstores on November 14th. A Bay Area resident and biology graduate, Raman traded a career in science for fantasy writing, a transaction that so far has paid off. Writing "The Crimson Fortress" took Akshaya to Rajasthan — where she visited forts and step-wells she would later incorporate into the story— Tamil Nadu (her home state) and Goa.

Akshaya Raman, a Tamil-American author, resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. Her debut book, "The Ivory Key," is the first of a two-part series. "The Crimson Fortress" releases in November 2023. The narrative unfolds in a world where magic is rare and tangible, where four royal siblings unite to find the kingdom-saving key. Raman, a biology graduate, transitioned from science to fantasy writing Raman's stories are celebrated for their optimism and challenge the idea that one mistake defines young characters' lives in the YA genre.
The sequel to her debut novel "The Ivory Key" arrives this November
You've mentioned how much you enjoy the research process when writing a novel. Was "The Crimson Fortress" any different compared to what you went through with "The Ivory Key"? With "The Crimson Fortress," most of my research was online, but I was fortunate to go to India at the end of last year and visit some of my sources of inspiration. I was excited to incorporate the descriptions and experiences of what it felt like to walk through those ancient monuments. I could also talk to my grandma and ask her questions like, "If I were to break into a temple, how do I do that?"
How far ahead were you in "The Crimson Fortress" when "The Ivory Key" came out? Did the first book's reception impact your original plan for the second? I had a draft done but ended up making significant edits. I didn't let comments

affect my original plan, but knowing what people liked helped me highlight them. For instance, food is abundant in book one, so I ensured that "The Crimson Fortress" also featured a greater emphasis on culinary elements. I was glad that what I loved about "The Ivory Key" resonated with people and felt I could stick to my vision. I knew where the characters would end up emotionally and wrote toward those moments.
Regarding "The Ivory Key," you mentioned there were parts of you in all four siblings. Did that change in "The Crimson Fortress"? That's still true, but how I related to them changed slightly. I felt more connected to Vira (the Maharani of Ashoka and the main driver of the action) because her journey is more relatable. My experiences going through the publication process informed my vision of her.

There's a thread you leave dangling at the end of "The Crimson Fortress." Are you giving yourself a chance to revisit this world at a later date? Never say never. There are more stories that can be told in this world. I don't have any plans right now to do it, but there's a door open.
After reading both books, I've noticed they exude more vitality and positivity compared to the typical YA saga. Was this intentional? It was important for me because, often, with YA fiction, the characters make one mistake, and their lives are over. When characters are so young, you're doing them a disservice by saying whoever you are at 16 is who you will be for the rest of your life. I knew from the very beginning I wanted (the story) to be more hopeful.
What are your writing habits? I work most days a week. I'm a morning person, so I get my writing done early. I have my daily ritual: sitting down with coffee and my journal.
Considering your biology major background, do you believe the scientific method has helped you as a storyteller? Two of my best friends are doctors. Sometimes, I would call them to get them to walk me through an injury and figure out how bad it could get without impeding the plot to move forward. It was helpful to have that knowledge to figure out what questions to ask and how to weave the answers in.
What's the best editorial advice you've received? One of the most foundational lessons I learned was that a scene must always be doing multiple things: develop a character, showcase a relationship, do some world-building, and move the plot forward.
How would you say your heritage has determined your abilities as a storyteller?

n a world where millions of children suffer from the harsh realities of poverty, abuse, and neglect, Make a Difference (MAD) shines as a beacon of hope. Established in 2006 by the passionate and dedicated Jithin Nedumala, this remarkable NGO is making a profound impact on the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Bangalore, India, and beyond. As countless children worldwide face uncertain futures, MAD's mission is to offer them a lifeline—to live with dignity, security, and the ability to cope with life's challenges. Join us on a journey to explore how MAD is making a real difference in the lives of these children, providing them with the foundation for a brighter future. For Jithin Nedumala, who founded MAD in 2006 when he was just 20 years old, volunteering with children was a coincidence. After losing a close friend at the age of 19, he began volunteering at an orphanage in Kochi to "escape his own pain." There, focusing on someone else's struggles helped him find deeper happiness. "I was able to focus on

something larger than myself for the first time," he adds. However, he soon realized that most children he was working with, owing to their circumstances, might get sucked into the world of crime and violence. "MAD was born because I was angry at society, where instead of providing children with the best care and support they need to break free of the cycle of poverty, we are just keeping them alive till 18 and then washing our hands of them," says Nedumala.

To Keep You Warm & Stylish
By Mrinalini Sundar
Is winter a season to showcase your fashionable side? Yes! If you're leaning towards a 'no' and bringing out those heavy jackets, dark denim, and gloves, wait up; we have something for you. While layering plays a key role in keeping oneself warm, there are ways in which you can spruce up your style for the cold weather. The key here is to invest in winter 2023 trends that may never go out of style. From long black jackets and metallic prints for your Christmas and New Year parties to clutch bags that you can keep all year long, here are some winter trends that you can incorporate into your wardrobe:
70
NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2 023 Reflecting The South-Asian Lifestyle
Make a statement with long black coats Wednesday Addams sure did bring back the Long Black Coat era on the ramp, with many designers showcasing different ways one could wear their black coats this winter. While one might think black is too solid a colour, giving a morbid vibe, this trend, if worn right, can be reused year after year during this time. These long black coats will complement dresses, jeans, and trousers' look. If you're not into monochrome, add a colourful scarf or adorn a statement earring to break the monotony. This way, you're wearing two trends at once!
Ramp up with hourglass silhouettes While staying indoors, you are all about wearing comfortable clothes and layering, but add some hourglass silhouettes to showcase your fashionable side. From corseted tops, dresses, peplum styles, bustiers, or structured jackets or tops around your waist, this trend fits both slim and curvaceous body types. Wearing a comfortable fit and adding a thick leather belt around your waist will also do the trick if you are not the corsetry type of woman. This classic Hollywood style is sure to withstand the test of time.

Moody dark florals for the season By now, we all know that florals are for all seasons. But how do you wear them for winter? Hmm… create a moody tone by opting for darker floral print outfits. Of course, there are plenty of options, like layered floral blouses, pants, dresses, long skirts, and more. To complete the look, do not accessorize with summery sandals and totes; instead, wear them with boots and stockings (all in a shade darker) and pair them with smaller bags and clutches. You will thank us for bringing a welcome change to your otherwise monochrome outfits during winter.
Experiment with metallic When you think of winter fashion, soft fabrics are the first to come to mind. But how about adding a bit of sass by wearing metallic? We know they're a risky trend to try, but if chosen carefully, you could ace the look. And the key here is not to wear them only for parties; style them for everyday looks as well. Pair your low-tone sequined top with a plain skirt, or wear metallic pants with a muted-tone top. And, of course, bring them out for Christmas and New Year parties. Just keep in mind the accessories and shoes you pair them with.
Clutches for the win Say goodbye to big tote bags made of straw and bring out the classic clutch bags for the season. They're cute, handy, and hold only the important things you need for the day. While layering during winter adds much weight to your look, carrying a big bag will only obliterate the winter fashion look. You'll look like a sack carrying those heavy weights around your winter outings. Instead, choose sleek clutches and clutch bags in colours to break the heavy monotony of your winter look. Buy those that have detachable straps, as they double up as your AM to PM bags.
Cropped jackets for winter You might be wondering, "why?" But trust us, cropped jackets add plenty of chic and style to your look. Of course, keep in mind the weather conditions when choosing to wear them. But cropped jackets in various fabrics, when paired with trousers, skirts, or dresses, bring a fun side to your look. Cropped jackets bring out various moods – you can go for a feminine look, grunge style, or even keep it simple and wear them all year long. They're too cute to miss this winter!
Winter fashion with chic scarves If you're not inclined to invest in winter trends like metallics or hourglass silhouettes but still want to stay in the winter fashion game, consider adding scarves to your wardrobe. Scarves are a winter essential, but did you know that scarf dressing is a stylish trend, too? Whether you choose printed or plain scarves, they can add a touch of chic to your winter style, keeping you both fashionable and warm during the cold season. Embrace the chilly season with these trendy fashion choices, and you'll be sure to turn heads and stay cozy throughout the winter months. Whether it's the elegance of long black coats, the allure of metallic accents, the chicness of cropped jackets, or the moody charm of dark florals -- there's a winter trend for everyone!

earless and elegant, with a touch of high-octane glamour, best describes couturier Shivani Awasty's latest collection — Syren. Aptly named after the Greek mythical creatures, 'sirens,' this collection is a celebration of the alluring and fascinating qualities that define a woman. Established in 2015, Shivani Awasty's eponymous luxury couture and prêt wear label has always aimed at creating contemporary, cutting-edge pieces that showcase delicate detailing, impeccable technique, attentive pizazz, and subtlety that is packed with the 'oomph' factor. The brand's essence seamlessly translates into the exquisite pieces of Syren as well. Unafraid of experimenting with silhouettes on the edgier side of things, Shivani has designed dresses, lehengas, and gowns with angular cuts, billowing frills, and 20s-style fringes. These designs cater to those who seek to elevate their style while embracing the essence of couture. Every silhouette in the collection exudes the bold and audacious spirit of the modern woman, making Syren a celebration of contemporary elegance and daring fashion. Syren is not just a collection of garments; it is a powerful statement that echoes every woman's unconscious yet potent femininity. "Syren's inspiration is a woman who is alluring, fascinating and dangerous in some ways. The collection champions vivid romanticism and high-octane glamour, manifesting a woman's unconscious yet powerful sophisticated femininity," shares Shivani, framing her thoughts behind her latest collection.

Drawing inspiration from women who possess an element of danger, Syren epitomizes romanticism and edgy glamour. "We have been inspired by the mythological creatures – Sirens. The all-new SYREN line calls to mind the power of a woman's sensuality, her boundless inner power, and her fearless elegance. It's crafted for the woman who's not afraid of the spotlight, and it does so while keeping craft and design at the forefront. The collection embodies the inner power, fearlessness, elegance, and sensuality of a woman," Shivani reveals, unravelling the inspiration behind this collection. A former student of the prestigious Central Saint Martin's institution, London, where she concluded her education in fashion design womenswear, Shivani Awasty is one of the most renowned names in the fashion industry today. With design aesthetics, which are a balance of structure and abstraction entwined in subtle English sensibilities, the Shivani Awasty label is a hot favourite with several celebrities, including Malaika Arora, Masoom Minawala, Tapsee Pannu, Sunny Leone, Aditi Rao Hyadri, Mouni Roy, Gauri Khan, and Hansika Motwani.

In addition to her illustrious journey, Shivani Awasty has had the privilege of dressing the renowned English contemporary artist Grayson Perry, a testament to her creative prowess. Having honed her skills at globally acclaimed fashion houses like the House of John Galliano in Paris and Marchesa in New York, Shivani's expertise spans diverse arenas. Under the House of John Galliano, she contributed to their Autumn Winter collections and crafted accessories with unparalleled flair. At Marchesa, her meticulous couture works adorned Hollywood luminaries, including Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, Sarah Hyland, and more. Shivani's fervent ambition revolves around establishing a distinctive global presence in couture and ready-towear fashion. Needless to say, ready-towear fashion today has hardly ever made heads turn the way Shivani's aesthetics does.

DARPAN Style The craftsmanship behind Syren is nothing short of extraordinary. Shivani has meticulously worked with luxurious fabrics like silk tulle and organza, creating a translucent appeal that adds an ethereal quality to each garment. The collection's key focus lies in its bold jewel tones and sharp hues, which create a symphony of colours that mirrors the depth and complexity of a woman's persona. The designer says that Syren is vastly different from her past work: "The last collection, 'Celestial,' drew inspiration from constellations and celestial objects in the sky. The key focus was the luminous effect and bursts of light created by exploding stars. On the other hand, Syren focuses on the power of a woman's sensuality, her boundless inner power, and her fearless elegance, which is very different from Celestial."

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?
DARPAN Weddings
Our wedding day was full of excitement for both of us and our families. There was a blend of emotions – happiness, nervousness, and joy. We were both anxious the morning of the wedding. However, this feeling quickly disappeared as the Anand Karaj ceremony began. One particular moment that remains vivid in our minds took place after our Anand Karaj. Following the ceremony's conclusion, our closest friends and family gathered to congratulate us and celebrated our exit from the ceremony tent by showering us with rose petals.
Q: Could you tell us about your reception? Our reception was truly the grand finale of our wedding week. Lux Affairs brought our vision to life by transforming our venue and creating the perfect ambiance for a memorable night. We incorporated personal elements that reflected our story through our signature drinks, entrance video and reception logo. From the catering and décor to the music and entertainment – our reception exceeded our expectations. Seeing our friends and family coming together to celebrate us into the wee hours of the morning was the perfect end to our wedding week.

When coordinating our outfits, we felt it was important our outfits represented our personal styles while staying in line with our wedding themes.
Q: What are your goals as a couple? To prioritize one another and build a life we can look back on and be proud of. We both understand the importance of continuing to work on ourselves as individuals so we can grow together as a couple.
Q: What are the strengths of your marriage? Our greatest strength is being each other's friends before anything else. We share common values and beliefs and have similar goals. We balance one another out and prioritize open communication in our relationship.
Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be? Marriage is a partnership. It involves shared responsibilities both in and out of the household. Support and celebrate one another and all the milestones along the way, regardless of how big or small.

2023 HONDA CIVIC Si
Saving the Manual Sport Compact
PICTURES CREDITS: WWW.HONDANEWS.COM
Eleven generations in, Honda continues to provide a stick-enabled, factory-tuned Si version of the popular Honda Civic. Completely redesigned last year, the sedan — coupes are discontinued, sadly — returns unchanged for the 2023 model year. “The Civic Si has achieved iconic status because it continually offers exhilarating performance at an affordable price,” says Steve Hui, Honda Canada assistant vice president, in a press release. “The latest Si brings that along with a standard manual transmission that makes it even more exciting to drive. It’s clearly the best and most dynamic Si we’ve ever produced, and it’s built right here in Canada.” Growing 33 millimetres in length compared to the outgoing vehicle, the new one, in many ways, resembles an Accord down to the stretched LED headlamps and, as a result, loses some of the sleekness from before — particularly since the two-door is cancelled. On the upside, the previous busy front fascia is cleaned up and now wears simple dark upper and lower mesh grills and matching side intake bezels, complemented by black 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. Similarly at the rear, the odd bumper cut-outs are gone, leaving only a pair of red reflectors, and conventional horizontal LED taillights replace the old C-shaped units. A contrast gloss-black spoiler sits flush on the
trunk lid, and the lower aero piece houses dual oval exhaust tips. One of the benefits of a longer chassis and wheelbase is increased rear passenger space. Even with a child seat installed in the second row, toddlers have lots of legroom, which certainly wasn’t the case in previous iterations. The body-stabilizing black-and-red-coloured sport seats boast built-in headrests. They are super comfortable and supportive, particularly in the thigh area, due to the front lower cushion being raised 12.7 millimetres. Modern Honda and Acura infotainment systems aren’t the most intuitive, but the nine-inch touchscreen looks nice next to the 10-inch fully digital instrument panel. The wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality works well, and the standard 12-speaker Bose stereo is a significant upgrade.

HIGHLIGHTS MSRP: $37,693 Motor: 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Horsepower: 200 @ 6,000 rpm Torque (lb-ft): 192 @ 1,800 rpm Gearbox: six-speed manual Layout: front-engine, front-wheel drive Fuel economy: 8.0 L/100 km mixed city/highway (observed)
Engineers massaged the familiar 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder mill so the same 192 lb-ft of peak torque comes on 300 rpm earlier for punchier acceleration. Strangely, the tune has reduced the horsepower down five to a round 200, though the output is held better towards the upper end of the rpm range between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. Having driven and owned various SIs of the past, I admittedly do miss the high-revving, naturally aspirated VTEC days of old. This Civic at least still sounds sporty thanks to the Active Sound Control system creating an artificial exhaust note through the speakers. And the manual-only six-speed gearbox, featuring 10 percent shorter throws, shifts pretty crisply, and the Type R-inspired leather-wrapped aluminum knob feels good in hand. Handling is what the model is known for, and things like a stiffer body and spring rates, thicker stabilizer bars and a 12-millimetre wider track create a tangible improvement in the corners. The Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance technologies is also updated, utilizing a new wider-angle forward-facing camera, computer processor and software to identify objects quickly and more accurately. All the changes come at a cost, however. A 2023 Honda Civic Si will run customers north of $37,000 MSRP.

2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Fifth Generation Radiant Crossover
PICTURES CREDITS: MEDIA.LEXUS.CA
Lexus had the distinction of launching
the world's first compact luxury crossover when the RX 300 came out in the late 1990s. Now, in 2023, the "Radiant Crossover" is as good as it has ever been, showcasing a fresh style language, four powertrain options and an all-new 500h F SPORT Performance model. "We're thrilled to offer our Canadian guests the next chapter of the RX story. The perfect luxury vehicle to convey the transformation that we're making to the Lexus brand," says Lexus Canada director Martin Gilbert in a media release. "The RX is not only our best-selling Lexus in Canada, but it's also built right here at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in southern Ontario for the entire North American market." Part of the transformation is the move from the iconic spindle grille to what the company calls spindle body, where the grille — which now requires less real estate due to the partially electrified powertrains needing less cooling — blends seamlessly into the rest of the exterior. Add to the mix ten different paint choices, including the Lexus-first Copper Crest (Darpan's being the Iridium silver that shimmers in daylight), a sculpted 3-D body flare rising from the bottom of the rear doors, and cool wraparound taillight lenses resembling the visor on Kylo Ren's helmet, and you get what I consider peak RX design. The F SPORT Performance also features big six-piston brake callipers, a
textured mesh grille and matching intake bezels, and 21-inch alloy wheels. At the same time, on the inside, there's a perforated leather steering wheel with paddle shifters, beautifully patterned suede trim, branded sills and lots of aluminum detailing. Buyers can upgrade to a 14-inch display (8.9-inch is standard), which runs the same infotainment software found in fellow GA-K platform SUVs like the Lexus RZ and Toyota bZ4X. Navigating the system is intuitive enough, but I discovered a couple of annoyances — for example, a pop-up asked me to sign in each time the RX started up, and SiriusXM sometimes wouldn't play properly when Apple CarPlay was active. An expansive panoramic glass roof is available as well.

They're oddly replaced with "e-Latch" popper buttons that seem a little unnecessary, though I suppose they add to the overall contemporary appearance of the cabin. Propelling the 500h is a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and two electric motors. Together, the setup creates 366 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Unlike most other hybrids I've driven, the transition between zero emissions and gasoline operation is smooth. In other competitors, when the internal combustion kicks in, the experience can be quite loud and jarring. DIRECT4 all-wheel drive sends torque forward and backward as necessary, and the Adaptive Variable Suspension equipped on our press vehicle constantly reads road conditions and adjusts damping on the fly to provide a comfortable, stable ride with responsive steering. The 2023 Lexus RX 500h F SPORT Performance starts at $83,125 and is in dealerships now.

2023 Nissan Ariya A New Dawn
PICTURES CREDITS: CANADA.NISSANNEWS.COM
Yet another entrant into the increasingly
crowded electric segment is the all-new 2023 Nissan Ariya. With the fit and finish fitting of an Infiniti product and a range of almost 500 kilometres depending on configuration, the crossover is impressive for the brand’s first attempt at a gas-free utility offering. The styling is influenced by the Japanese term “iki,” which means refinement, translated aesthetically through elements like the shield grille that appears solid black at a distance; however, up close, there is a fine 3-D traditional pattern beneath the smooth surface. It also serves to protect the many driver assistance sensors concealed from view. Both the revised company logo and sides illuminate gently once the vehicle is on, and above each ultra-thin headlamp is comprised of four 20-millimetre mini-LED projectors. A single elegant character line runs along the top of the doors connecting the front fascia and rear, the side panels otherwise smooth and devoid of visual clutter, where the latter features a one-piece light blade stretching across the squared-off liftgate. The subtle Nissan script above the license plate is reminiscent of a modern Lexus RX, and the window spoiler behind the steeply raked C-pillar adds a little sportiness to the compact SUV. All Ariyas wear two-tone paint with black roofs. Darpan’s press loaner was sprayed in the signature copper colour, supposed to represent the moment just before dawn, I personally haven’t seen it on an automobile before, and it looks especially striking in direct sunlight. The cabin boasts a lot of innovation as well. The absence of a conven-
tional transmission and clever packaging of the onboard battery allows the centre console — which is powered and can move forward and backward, by the way, even if a bit gimmicky — to be disconnected from the dash, creating a flat front floor area. The resulting extra legroom is quite significant and takes some getting accustomed to. Other highlights include a storage compartment under the floating 12.3-inch infotainment display doubling as a miniature table when open, illuminating haptic controls hiding underneath the wood trim controlling climate and drive settings, and Amazon Alexa integration so users can ask the virtual concierge to play music, place calls, control smart home devices and more. The only thing missing was a nice set of aluminum covers to spice up the drab, dark pedals. Our Evolve+ FWD model utilized a 178-kilowatt electric motor and an 87-kilowatt-hour battery good for 238 horsepower, 221 lb-ft of torque and up

Spectre Unveiled
Rolls-Royce's Electric Masterpiece Rolls-Royce, the epitome of luxury
automotive craftsmanship, recently unveiled its groundbreaking creation, The Spectre, at the prestigious Rolls-Royce Vancouver dealership. This unveiling marked a historic moment for the marque as it introduced its first ultra-luxury electric super coupé, seamlessly blending the artisanship synonymous with Rolls-Royce with cutting-edge electric technology. President & CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Americas, Martin Fritsches, CEO of OpenRoad Auto Group, Christian Chia and the VP of Regional Operations and Area GM for OpenRoad Auto Group, Aly Jiwani were present at the event. The evening unfolded with entertainment, exquisite cuisine and beverages attended by media representatives and esteemed guests. Offering deeper insights into the Spectre and its reception in Vancouver, Aly Kinani shares valuable information, shedding light on how the local community embraced the vehicle and its potential impact on the brand's future.
What inspired Rolls Royce to create the Spectre, its first electric super coupé, and how does it align with the brand's heritage of luxury and craftsmanship? In 1900, motoring pioneer The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls made a bold prediction in a magazine article: "The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged," he declared. Those words were written four years before his historic first meeting with Henry Royce. In September 2021, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars confirmed it had begun testing the first model in its history to be conceived and engineered from the beginning as an electric car. That testing programme extended to more than 2.5 million kilometres in every extreme of terrain and temperature, simulating over 400 years of normal use. A year later, in October 2022, Spectre was unveiled to the world. A prophecy fulfilled. As the first fully-electric RollsRoyce ever made, Spectre proves that battery-electric technology has come of TMand can be successfully deployed age

Planar Suspension System - When the system detects a corner, it recouples the components, stiffens the damper, and prepares to activate the four-wheel steering system to ensure effortless entry and exit. Individual sensors adjust the suspension automatically during cornering to maintain perfect tracking and stability. Spectre is built upon an All-Aluminum Spaceframe with 30% more rigidity; combining this with the planar suspension system is what gives Spectre the signature Magic Carpet Ride.
at the apex of automotive excellence, luxury and performance. As Charles Rolls himself foresaw, it is the motor car RollsRoyce has been driving towards since it was founded – an elevated expression of effortlessness, power and historical endurance.
Can you tell us more about the design philosophy behind the Spectre? How has the transition to electric technology influenced its exterior and interior aesthetics? The Spectre combines dazzling power and effortless performance with limitless freedom. Built upon the Architecture of Luxury — a bespoke platform that enables adaptive engineering and peerless ride quality — it combines agile performance with the marque's signature magic carpet ride.
Interior and Comfort: This is a Rolls-Royce first and an electric car second. No compromises have been made in terms of interior space, comfort, performance, or ride quality. Its intimate interior provides a perfect canvas for Bespoke personalization, complemented by a unique illuminated fascia and the first Starlight Doors ever - an extension of the Starlight headliner.
Exterior: There are subtle styling cues throughout the exterior that highlight the electric power of the Spectre, such as the black piano side skirt that nods to the battery compartment. Spectre's Pantheon grille is the widest
ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce and softly illuminated with 22 LEDs lighting up the rear of the grille at night. The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine was specially created for Spectre. With a lower stance and more aerodynamic profile, perfected over 830 hours of design modelling and wind-tunnel testing, it contributes to the motor car's drag coefficient of just 0.25cd, making Spectre the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever built.
What advanced technologies and engineering innovations have been integrated into the Spectre to ensure a seamless and exceptional driving experience for Rolls Royce enthusiasts? Electric Drivetrain with Braking Recuperation - It is fitted with two separate motors. This equates to an internal combustion engine equivalent of (584 hp) with 900Nm of torque. In terms of acceleration, Spectre achieves 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds (0100km/h in 4.5 seconds). By activating 'Brake Mode,' braking recuperation is increased, enabling single-pedal driving and even allowing the car to come to a complete stop if desired. Battery - The battery's position gives it a highly beneficial secondary function: fully integrated into the motor car's architecture, it acts as 700kg of additional acoustic insulation. The most connected Rolls-Royce ever SPIRIT is a completely redesigned digital architecture that connects the Spectre owner with their car more closely than ever before. As well as managing the motor car's functions, SPIRIT is seamlessly integrated into the marque's Whispers app, allowing owners to interact with their cars remotely.
112 NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2 023 DARPAN TM Reflecting The South-Asian Lifestyle
As the General Manager of Rolls Royce Vancouver, what excites you the most about introducing the Spectre to the local market, and how do you see it contributing to the brand's presence in Vancouver? We are excited to be the exclusive retail showroom in BC to unveil what is the start of a bold new chapter for the RollsRoyce marque and for our extraordinary clients, in such a thrilling way. This is the Rolls-Royce that changes everything. The Spectre redefines luxury and is simply transportation in a league of its own. This elevates the motor car experience in Vancouver. It is the beginning of our entire product portfolio going fully electric by 2030.

CANADIAN IMMIGRANTS SHARE THEIR STORY
Meet Phalak & Navjot Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada? We decided to immigrate to Canada because we saw it as a land of opportunity, where we could explore our full potential, enjoy a better quality of life, and secure a safe future for our family.
Which year did you immigrate? We made the big move in 2022, and let me tell you, it was quite an adventure.
What were your first impressions of Canada? Our first impressions of Canada were nothing short of amazing. People here were incredibly welcoming; it was like a giant group hug as soon as we stepped off the plane. And Vancouver's climate? Well, it's like Mother Nature's way of showing off – mild, refreshing, and four distinct seasons. The roads were cleaner than a brand-new whistle, and the air quality was so good you'd want to bottle it up.
Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friend's place?
Name: Phalak Betab Working at: PICS (Progressive Intercultural Community Services) Society Designation: Communications & Fundraising Officer Spouse Name: Navjot Singh Manihani When we first arrived, we were fortunate to have relatives who graciously offered us a place to stay for about ten days. It was a blessing because house-hunting can be like finding a needle in a haystack in a new country.
What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here? The initial challenges were real. Finding a job in our field wasn't a walk in the park, and our currency conversion math skills got a real workout. We were multiplying and dividing like human calculators!
How long did it take to get used to the people, weather, or surroundings? It took us around three months to get fully accustomed to the people, the weather, and our surroundings. It's like the sweet spot when everything starts feeling familiar, and you no longer rely on Google Maps for your daily commute.
How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome? Job hunting in Canada was a bit of a rollercoaster. It wasn't terribly difficult, but it felt like employers operated in a different time

zone. The hiring process here could sometimes take longer than a Lord of the Rings marathon. And, oh boy, the job scams were like a constant background noise in our search.
What do you like and dislike most about this country? As for what we like and dislike about Canada, well, there's not much in the "dislike" column at the moment. Let's say we're still exploring this vast and beautiful country, so the verdict is pending.
How do you see your future in Canada? Our future in Canada looks bright. We've worked hard to establish ourselves here, and the opportunities are immense. Our jobs, where we spend most of our time, keep us highly motivated and excited about the future.
How has your overall journey in Canada been so far? Our overall journey in Canada has been nothing short of outstanding and phenomenal. Sure, we've had our fair share of ups and downs, but it's all been part of the incredible learning experience.
Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada Well, it's Not Applicable, which is a pretty good sign, I'd say!
Advice for Immigrants Buckle up and be ready for the worst to get the best. It's an adventure, and every twist and turn is a part of the incredible journey of making a new life in this beautiful land of opportunity. Embrace it with open arms and a sense of humour, and you'll do just fine!
