The year 2016 was momentous for Sonakshi in many ways. In her new avatar, Sonaskhi reinvented the Bollywood actress as the action hero with her movies Akira and Force 2. While the former had her perform hard-core stunts in a solo lead, the latter made her share screen and action sequences with Bollywood’s stunt master, John Abraham.

F

or long, Bollywood, like any other film industry, has thrived on patriarchal hegemony. While the big screen cherished male actors playing powerful iconic characters such as Anand in the movie Anand, Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Agneepath, or Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg, female leads had limited territory to explore. Besides the stereotypical romantic interest of the male protagonist, a female lead mostly revolved around a social cause or represented a woman’s struggle to break free – Tabu in Astitva exploring an independent identity outside of her role as a wife and mother, Smita Patil in Manthan fighting for her child and community after her husband abandons her, and Shabhana Azmi in Arth discovering meaning in life after learning about her husband’s extra-marital affair.

Every individual must learn to be comfortable in their own skin and flaunt their unique body type. Your different body type is your USP that sets you apart from the rest. The world would be dull if we all looked alike. Don’t chase a particular body type, be a perfect human not just a human with a perfect body.” In present times, the Bollywood heroine – an entity of beauty, glamour, values and love – has definitely expanded her scope and Sonakshi Sinha is one such actress leading the way in rebranding the stereotypical Bollywood actress into a fierce all-rounder lead. Despite debuting opposite Bollywood biggie Salman Khan and other industry heavyweights in Dabangg in 2010, Sonakshi carried a strong screen presence in her character as Rajjo. Her succeeding movies Rowdy Rathore, Lootera, Dabangg 2, and Holiday further solidified her name as a new brand of artist challenging the various nuisances a modern day actress faces – body shaming being one of them. Since the start of her career, Sonakshi has vociferously resisted industry’s strict body prototype for actresses. “I have always maintained that be proud of who you are and the way you are. Every individual must learn to be comfortable in their own skin and flaunt their unique body type. Your different body type is

your USP that sets you apart from the rest. The world would be dull if we all looked alike. Don’t chase a particular body type, be a perfect human not just a human with a perfect body.” As the youngest child of Bollywood legend Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakshi graduated in fashion designing from Mumbai and designed costumes in 2006 for a movie called Mera Dil Leke Dekho. Acting happened by destiny and Sonakshi describes it as the best decision of her life. “It’s the best thing that has happened to me. I love what I do and it’s so important to be a part of something that makes you want to turn up every single day.” Her on-screen stint came with Dabangg. Though she did not appear in any movie for another two years, her fan base continued to skyrocket as she received numerous awards including Filmfare - Best Debut Female, IIFA - Star Debut of the Year, Female, and Star Screen Awards - Most Promising Newcomer in 2011. Sonakshi was

a new breed of stars who appealed to fans at all levels. At various events, Sonakshi would often accompany her mother Poonam Sinha and in fact during interviews, would quote her as a force in maintaining Sonakshi’s grounded personality. It doesn’t come as a surprise when Sonakshi quotes her mother again when we ask her about a woman that has profoundly impacted her work and self-identity. “She has a strong influence on me. She has shaped my personality and my traits, I have imbibed a lot of her qualities. My mother and me both hate being late anywhere, we are very punctual and we take our work commitments very seriously,” answers Sonakshi. It seems family has been the nodal point of her growth professionally and personally. “I feel

when I see pride and happiness in my parents’ eyes, that’s a milestone for me, every time they see my work on screen or at events I see more and more joy in their eyes and that’s a huge milestone for me. Seeing your parents proud of what you do and love and appreciation from family, friends and fans is success for me.” Sonakshi’s career graph started at a peak with Dabangg and she has only levitated not only as an actor but also as a celebrity icon. When the ALS Ice Bucket challenge picked up pace, Sonakshi resisted the viral movement by supporting the cause of ALS but appealing everyone to refrain from wasting water. For a long time now, Sonakshi has been advocating against the wage disparity in Bollywood. “I believe that this gap will be fulfilled soon.

One has to earn status and respect. It doesn’t depend on whether you are a man or woman. The only difference I see in the industry is the pay disparity. It still exists,” Sonakshi mentioned at Inglot Guinness World Record event where she amongst other women became a title-holder for setting a record for most people painting their nails simultaneously. Despite being a major celebrity and belonging to a family that has lived and continues to live with their share of stardom, Sonakshi does not shy away from voicing her opinions. Whether it be the issue of women’s self-defence or body shaming, Sonakshi speaks whenever she feels it is important – a reason why she is also seen as a youth icon in India. “I think as a society we have been addressing

a lot of issues lately, on gender equality, child labour, global warming, girl child education, human rights, animal rights, terrorism, corruption etc. However, I feel more than talking now we need to start taking more action. We all know what the problems are, now we need to collectively work on solutions and highlight the importance of eliminating these issues from the society [or] world we live in. My appreciation and salute to all those who are already doing their bit to bring about a positive change or working in that direction.” The year 2016 was momentous for Sonakshi in many ways. In her new avatar, Sonaskhi reinvented the Bollywood actress as the action hero with her movies Akira and Force 2. While the former had her perform hard-core stunts in a solo lead, the latter made her share screen and action sequences with the stunt master of Bollywood, John Abraham. “While working on Akira I was training in MMA and I really

enjoyed it. But the big change came about once I started shooting for Force 2 and being around John. John is so disciplined about his diet and workouts that as a co-star you automatically get influenced and want to change for the better of yourself.” Both movies progressed on distinct plots, but Sonakshi’s character as an action hero in both movies moved parallel to each other. Her character as Akira in Akira and KK in Force 2 set an impetus for a transformative journey for this versatile actor. “Post signing Akira I made a promise to myself that now I will only pick roles which add value in some way or the other or are strong characters,” explains Sonakshi. Her latest movie Noor, justifies this promise. The movie is a comedy-drama based on Saba Imtiaz’s novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me! and follows the story of a journalist named Noor as she navigates through her love life and various blunders along the way of unearthing an organ

trafficking racket. Akira and Noor also had Sonaskshi flex her muscle as a singer. Her song ‘Move your Lakk’ with Punjabi sensation Diljit Dosanjh and rapper Badshah get your feet tapping with an irresistibly catchy line and groovy tunes. In her upcoming project Ittefaq¸ remake of the 1969 film by the same name, Sonakshi plays a grey character opposite Sidharth Malhotra. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s the first time I’ll be playing such a character and very different from the roles I’ve played in the past. My upcoming roles in the next few projects will add a lot of range to my body of work, from Dabangg to Lootera to roles like Akira and K.K. in Force 2 to playing a journalist and then a grey character... its got me really excited for next year.” Looking at the success of her previous movies and characters, we cannot wait to see more!

“We will always be with, for and by each other at all times, because that's what keeps us going and will always be the driving force for our marriage.”

Q: How did you meet? Shivani: His parents had moved to Abu Dhabi from Singapore for a short stint, my parents have lived in Abu Dhabi for a many years. Both of us were in college in the US (separate states) and we met when we went back to Abu Dhabi for our winter break. We were just friends/acquaintances for a few years before we met again on a similar holiday back when the story began to unfold itself.

Q: Could you share your proposal story? Shivani: I was visiting Miami with my college friends over the July 4th weekend to celebrate a friend’s birthday. They were visiting the Vizcaya Gardens as a tourist attraction and all of the friends were taking pictures of the very scenic location. At one point everyone wanted a photo with the entire group with none of the friends volunteering to click the picture. Instinctively, I offered herself to click their photo and at that moment all of their cameras were up with

Sneh kneeling down behind me with roses in one hand, and a ring in another. He truly made it one of the most magical days of our lives.

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment? A: The wedding was filled with so many mixed emotions- happiness for finally getting there and starting the journey together, excitement for what is to come, the joy of all the love surrounding you, and the tinge of sadness of leaving your family and starting your own in a true sense. Of course, the highlight of the day was the wedding itself with our favourite moment being the end when we were taking pictures, and we realize “Oh wow, it’s done! Here begins our forever!”

Q: Could you tell us about your reception? A: The cocktail sangeet doubled as our reception as well. We wanted to do something out of the box and make sure each and everyone felt involved. The night

was called A Night at Etoile, ‘Etoile’ being the location of our very first date in Abu Dhabi. The stars of the night were our guests. The whole evening was a surprise, with a red carpet, award show entrance and a message to us from all of them upon entering. The cocktail was outdoors with a super creative menu by the bride’s masterchef sister. The bride and the groom joined the cocktail as well. Upon the conclusion of the cocktail hour, the guests were pursued into the hall to begin the night. No one had a clue about what was to come. Instead of a traditional reception entrance of the bride and the groom, we chose a dance to the song ‘Lean on, with both the sets of parents, siblings and ourselves; it totally energized the crowd for the rest of the evening. Then the MC’s of the night, the bride and groom’s sister and brother- Nikita and Sajan, took over the stage along with a professional MC, Shona Rajput. All of them did a brilliant job introducing the evening as an awards ceremony. Comedy award titles, nominees, background music, and lots of laughter followed for the rest of the evening. To imitate an actual awards show, our friends, family and professional dancers performed at intervals between the award presentations, which was cherry on the top.

with bird motifs all over. I got an offwhite sherwani customized by Virtues in Ahmedabad.

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

A: We are visiting Italy for 10 days starting on the west coast in Amalfi and driving into the Basilicata and the Puglia regions.

Shivani: For the mehendi, I chose a mirrored, bright coloured ensemble that was custom made by Pooja at Myra in Ahmedabad. She did a fantastic job of adding in every exact detail that we wanted. Sneh chose a hot pink kurta and beige dhoti with a brocade jacket to complement Shivani’s colours. The fabric was hand picked and design customized by Sneh. For the cocktail and sangeet, I wore one of Ridhi Mehra’s navy blue anarkali and Sneh chose a navy blue indo-western jacket with slacks made by Anurag Kashyap in Amhedabad. Sneh: For the wedding, Shivani’s outfit was made by Myra who customized it. She wanted birds as a symbolism to love, and a red and white combination as per the Gujarati tradition. Q: What are your goals as a couple? A: Trust, love, respect and strengthen each other every day.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage? A: Motivating each other just by being together whether it’s work, exercise, or just staying on schedule.

Q: If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be? A: Wake up, eat breakfast together, workout together, cook together, do your chores together, and never let the other go to bed angry or upset. It’s truly the little things that lead to a happy and content marriage.

Q: How did you meet? Gurvir: Rylan and I met in Gastown the night before I was moving to Kamloops for school. We hit it off right away and in conversation, realized we both shared mutual friends. It was a strange coincidence, because Rylan was from Kamloops and had moved to Vancouver. From that evening, we talked to each other every day until I moved back.

Could you share your proposal story? Gurvir: I had been working all day and was supposed to meet up with Rylan at his home prior to us going to Downtown with his cousin. He called me as I was

leaving work to let me know he was already in Downtown and I would have to meet him there instead. He decided to take me to the seawall for a walk before dinner. Once we arrived at Third Beach, we walked towards the shoreline and he pointed to something in the water. There was a mason jar stuck in the sand, with a light flashing in it. He asked me to check what it was and I realized my name was written on top of the lid. Once we got the jar open, I pulled out a note that asked “Will you marry me?” As I read it, Rylan went down on one knee and held out a ring. I immediately froze and it felt like my heart just stopped. I turned my back to him and covered my face with

my hands feeling I was about to cry. Turning back around I said “You’re such an idiot, of course I will.” I clearly did not know how to lovingly express my feelings! I also did not know Rylan’s cousin and her fiancé were watching and taking pictures from the seawall as this was happening. Rylan then took me to the Teahouse Restaurant in Stanley Park where we had a bottle of champagne while overlooking the beach. We ended the night with a dinner with his cousin and her fiancé.

Gurudwara. The most memorable moment for me was when I saw Rylan as I sat down next to him in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. I felt as though I had forgotten all the stress and worries from the week leading up to the day. In that moment I was just so happy and excited to be marrying the love of my life that nothing else mattered.

Could you tell us about your reception?

Our reception was held at the Riverside Grand Ballroom in Richmond. The décor was beautiful and DJ RSD of Aftershock played amazing music and had the party going. It was a great way to end the wedding festivities with a night of dancing with all our family and friends.

We went to Sparkling Hills Resort in Vernon immediately after the wedding for a couple nights and later travelled through the Shuswap before heading back home to Vancouver. We went to Europe in March and April this year. We spent 14 days in Italy travelling through Rome, Florence, Venice, Amalfi and Sicily before flying to Dubrovnik, Croatia for four days. We ended our honeymoon with six days in Greece, dividing up our nights between Athens, Santorini and Paros. I am so glad we decided to save this trip for the following year because it allowed us to settle in and thoroughly plan the kind of honeymoon we wanted. There would have been no way we would have had enough energy to do this right after the wedding.

What are your goals as a couple? We both want to travel and see the world together before starting our own little family. We hope to have a life filled with love, kindness and fun.

What are the strengths of your marriage? It is important to the both of us to embrace our individuality and respect our different personalities. No matter what the situation is, we are easily able to use humour to lighten the mood and make each other laugh.

Advice for other married couples? Work together, compromise and have fun while embarking on your new journey.

32 Traditions By DARPAN

Q: Could you tell us about your reception? We had two receptions, one hosted by the bride’s side (shaadi reception) and the other hosted by the groom’s side (walima Reception). The shaadi reception was held at a golf course where the ceremony took place outside; I went with decoration and flower arrangements that had a rustic garden theme to compliment the venue. The walima reception was held inside a beautiful hall which was perfect for a night-time event. Both receptions were wellorganized by our parents and siblings – we had speeches, games and obviously great food!

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

“Appreciate the little things you do for one another and most importantly, make time for each other no matter how busy you are (without your phones)!” Q: How did you meet? There wasn’t that one particular moment when we met, so it’s hard to say. We grew up in the same community and suburb so we’ve known each other since we were kids. We went to the same high school and were on the same bus and became friends from there.

Q: Could you share your proposal story? We wanted to keep it traditional and involve our loved ones when we made it official. We had an engagement party with our families and close friends where he gave me the ring.

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment? We had several events through the wedding week! Each event had its special moment but one of ours was our photoshoot, it was fun, relaxing and just what we needed to de-stress. Another one of our favourite moments was when our families and friends performed the dances at the mehndi. They had been preparing the dances for the whole month and we were not allowed to know any details so all the dances were a surprise to us! It was so nice to see everyone participate and be a part of our wedding.

Saman: We had traditional outfits made from Pakistan and Saad’s suit was custom made from Italy. I went to Karachi for three weeks to get my clothes and jewellery for all the events while my mother-in-law and sisterin-law went to Lahore to get Saad’s outfits. We wanted to have different looks for each day so we went with something colourful and fun for the mehndi. Since the shaadi was taking place outside, I went with light colours but still keeping it traditional while Saad wore a black sherwani. For the walima, I wanted a modern and trendy look to go with his suit so went with a combination of light and dark purple.

Q: Where did you honeymoon? Saman: While I was planning for the wedding, Saad was in charge of planning the honeymoon. We went to three cities in Greece: Santorini, Mykonos and Athens. Our first stop was Santorini and it was definitely our favourite! We stayed at the highest point of the island which had amazing views and was very relaxing –

Traditions 33 By DARPAN

it was perfect after the hectic week we had! We then went to Mykonos which had beautiful beaches, great shopping and restaurants and finished off our trip in Athens where we visited the historical sites.

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

“We grew up in the same community and suburb so we’ve known each other since we were kids! We went to the same high school and were on the same bus and became friends from there.” 34 Traditions By DARPAN

Our goal as a couple is to have a solid foundation with each other and our families to one day build our own family. We also want to make sure we are always having fun. It can be in the little things we do to make each other laugh or bigger things like travelling and experiencing new places together.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage? Some of the strengths in our relationship are our shared values

and beliefs – it helps us be on the same page about decisions we make. Another one of our strengths is that we communicate about the good things and the bad things. It’s important to acknowledge the good qualities about each other and to discuss things we need to improve about ourselves as well.

Q: If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be? Our advice would be to always communicate and never go to bed angry. Appreciate the little things you do for one another and most importantly, make time for each other no matter how busy you are (without your phones)!

“After a long wait of four years I was going to marry the cutest girl in the world. We planned everything together just like we dreamt we would.” Q: How did you meet? Aloma: One of our common friends suggested we should get to know each other. Frankly, I wasn’t looking for someone special at that moment. So when Stanwil sent me a friend request on Facebook, I did not accept it for about two months. I eventually did because I felt I should

know him. As we got friendly, I started liking his open and frank nature. Stanwil: While getting to know each other, we realized we were different in many ways. We had a huge height difference. I was a social person, while she was reserved. Despite these issues, I still liked her as she was very sweet, caring and accommodating. We had a long distance relationship as I worked in Dubai, UAE, and she lived in Mumbai, India. Unlike other couples, we rarely spoke everyday, yet there was a connection between us. We felt we were very attached and close to each other. After a long wait of a year and a half, we decided to meet in person.

Q: What do you love most about one another? Aloma: Stanwil is a very charming person; he has a positive outlook towards life and enjoys whatever he does. He is very understanding and makes me feel comfortable and protected. He

always supports me in everything I do or want to do. When I’m feeling low and want to give up on something, he fills me with positivity. He is also a great cook. He treats my parents as his own which is very important for any girl. Stanwil: Aloma is extremely loving and adjusting. She takes care of even the minutest things connected to me. She looks after my parents so well that at times I feel she is their own daughter and I’m the son-in-law. She finds happiness in the small things I do for her and never demands for anything great. This clearly depicts the beautiful personality and loving heart she has. Knowing that I am a foodie, she prepares delicious meals that match my taste. The most important part in my life is playing volleyball and Aloma supports me to the fullest and cheers me during all my tournaments.

Q: Tell us about your proposal. Stanwil: We were meeting each other for the first time after almost a year and a half of dating online. Since we both celebrate our birthdays in February, the month of love, I flew to Mumbai to meet her. We both had mixed feelings as we had never seen each other in person. When I met her she was very shy and was hardly looking at me. At that moment the height difference was really a concern because she was so short that I looked like a giant in front of her. We watched a movie, had lunch and enjoyed the first date. When she was about to leave, I held her hand and asked, “Do you still feel that I am the one you would like to spend your whole life with?” Due to her shyness, she could only nod a yes. We both were really happy as our love stood strong against all odds.

and love and support each other unconditionally. That very moment we felt our relationship was complete. This was the best moment of our wedding day as we became one forever.

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

Q: Tell us about your wedding.

“Whatever happens, we will stand by each other, keep loving each other more and more every passing day and promise to grow old together, enjoy every moment and everything we do together, and one day grow a happy family.” 38 Traditions By DARPAN

Aloma: Marrying the man of my life was a dream come true. I Googled a lot about my wedding dress, the design and my hairdo. As every other girl, it was my dream to look like a princess on my big day. Every moment spent in wedding shopping and preparation seemed special. The fun part of the preparation was finding a pair of high heels that matched Stanwil’s height. Everything seemed so perfect, it was a dream wedding. Stanwil: After a long wait of four years I was going to marry the cutest girl in the world. We planned everything together just like we dreamt we would. Everything was very special and exciting. We really had a dream wedding and it was a grand success. We both were truly happy.

Q: What was your favourite moment of your wedding day? It was when we exchanged our wedding vows and wedding bands. We promised to hold each other’s hand through thick and thin

Aloma: I always wanted to look like a princess bride. I had always dreamt about my wedding gown and had done a lot of research. I purchased my gown from a shop called Brides R Us in Mumbai. When I went there I saw a very pretty gown lying on the table and at that very moment I felt, this is the one, I have found what I was dreaming about for so long. When I wore it, I did not want to remove it and I could not wait for the big day to come. Our wedding theme was pink and golden and it complimented very well with everything. Stanwil: I was very excited about my wedding; I stitched a simple gentleman’s blazer eight months in advance. As the wedding day was nearing, I got more attracted towards tuxedos. So I researched a lot about that and finally found a tuxedo of my choice. I got it stitched from a wedding designer house, Ram’s Tailors. I was very happy with my outfit.

Q: Tell us about your reception? The reception was fun; a lot of people attended the wedding. The best moment was our first dance choreographed by our friend Vicky Tauro. Even though we practised only once or twice before our big day, we were surprised by the praises we received from everyone. Our guests said that it was the best wedding dance they had ever seen.

Q: What advice do you have for couples about to get married? Marriage is a sacrament that is meant to be kept forever. Do not expect everything to be perfect as none of us are perfect. In fact, our imperfections make the relation strong if you take it positively. Never impose your ideas on your soulmate, rather plan everything together. When your partner does a mistake, you be the first one to forgive – this will surely increase your love. Keep the romance alive no matter how old you grow. Always pray together as prayer helps to strengthen your bond.

5Themes

BY TARANA RANA

It’s no secret that having a theme is a great way to tie in all elements of your wedding and give it some symmetry. But if you’re looking to create a story about your special day that is truly unforgettable, go for an unconventional wedding theme – one that truly shows off you and your partner’s unique style. So if you’re ready to add a little extra to the ordinary, get inspired by these

quirky, unusual wedding themes.

Unique Wedding

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is a great theme for an elegant, classic wedding. The key to recreate the old English charm of that beloved novel is vintage pieces and stylish floral displays. Go black and white for your invitations, with cameo silhouettes of your partner and you for that vintage touch. Add lush greenery, a few bright blooms and strings of fairy lights for a romantic garden feel. Centerpieces could be vases full of your favoUrite long-stemmed flowers or even loose flowers strewn around vintage candleholders.

The Great Gatsby If you and your partner are all about glitz, glamour and style, consider the roaring 20s for your wedding theme. The Gatsby theme is all about flash. Think glam when deciding your colour scheme – glittery colours such as metallic gold, silver, and black. Incorporate art deco into your wedding invites and place cards for that 20s feel. Scatter strings of pearls and crystals around candleholders for your centerpieces or long crystal vases with feathers. Another fun idea would be to set up a table with an antique typewriter so your guests can leave you well-wishes to read after. As for wedding favours? Champagne bottles will always be welcome and on theme!

Harry Potter

46 Traditions By DARPAN

Your love is magical and you want the world to know it! A Harry Potter-inspired wedding makes a memorable day for the couple who enjoys the series. Consider a combination of colours like deep purple, moss green, and dull gold for your scheme. You could style your wedding invitations as old-school letters, with a single feather. Or Hogwarts Express tickets! For your table dĂŠcor, either go antique with iron candelabras or stick to the books by setting up a display of vintage bottles and jars labeled as potions. Consider creating signature cocktails named after drinks from the series. (Butterbeer, anyone?) Another quirky idea is to incorporate a dessert table with treats from the series. If you decide to have a photo booth, make sure there are lots of themeappropriate props, such as house scarves, wands, and the iconic Harry Potter glasses for your guests.

Planning

Wizard of Oz

Ready for a trip down the yellow brick road? The Wizard of Oz inspired theme is ideal for the couple that enjoys a bit of whimsy. To recreate that sense of wonder and joy of Oz, start by picking a bold colour scheme for your décor. Think along the lines of emerald green, ruby red, or white and metallic gold when picking your décor. You could have invitations shaped to look like the Emerald City or keep it simple with poppy-themed cards. Keep centerpieces quirky with long glass jars layered with candy, in all the colours of the rainbow. Rainbow-coloured macarons would also make a lovely wedding favour for guests. And lastly, don’t forget the pièce de résistance – don a pair of red ruby slippers!

Your wedding will rule them all, with this rustic, fantasy-inspired theme. Perfect for the couple who share a love for Tolkien.

Lord of The Rings Your wedding will rule them all, with this rustic, fantasy-inspired theme. Perfect for the couple who share a love for Tolkien. Consider earthy colours for your colour scheme – like cream, copper, and tangerine. Fashion your wedding invites with parchment and calligraphic lettering. To subtly incorporate some of that middle-earth charm into your décor, you could have terrariums as centerpieces and tables could be named after places from the movies. Pieces such as antique lanterns, decorative pinecones, and lush garlands would also add to the rustic theme. For wedding favours, consider small succulent plants.

Planning

Kid-Friendly or

Kid-Free? How to properly deal with the expectations of others while planning your perfect day

BY ASHLEY STEPHENS

W

ho to invite to your wedding can be fraught with many deciding factors. Size, style and finances will play a large role in who makes the cut and who doesn’t – but what about the children? Inviting – or not inviting – children to your wedding can call your manners into question but does proper etiquette dictate your decision in this case? Ultimately, no; your guest list is up to you. Whether you want to welcome family and friends of all ages or your ideal fete is an adultonly affair, it’s acceptable either way. The pressure to please may have you leaning one way or another but the decision should reflect your desires for the day.

48 Traditions By DARPAN

If you do decide to have children at your celebration, you may find yourself with a few more decisions to ensure they’re entertained and attended to. They’ll likely have trouble sitting still through the ceremony and speeches – will you plan survival kits specifically for the squirmy ones? Or will you leave it to their parents to keep them content? Will the youngsters eat your elegant meal options? Do you mind if they’re running around or will you provide supervision so they stay (somewhat) stationary?

Ultimately, your guest list is up to you. Whether you want to welcome family and friends of all ages or your ideal fete is an adult-only affair, it’s acceptable either way.

It’s important to have realistic expectations when it comes to a child’s attendance and ensure they’re in line with how you envision your special day unfolding. Kids can bring authenticity, innocence and fun to a day centered on celebrating love and happiness. A child’s ability to find joy in the imperfections can make partygoers, planners and even the most perfectionists of couples feel at ease and more focused on the celebration instead of the details. A child will likely act their age and as long as you’re okay with that, add them to the invite list!

If you don’t wish to be wed in the presence of petite party-goers, it’s not impolite to leave them out – children can certainly change the vibe of your celebration and if that’s not what you’re going for, there’s no need to feel rude about it. Despite pressure from family and friends to have children be included, the decision is up to you. How you handle the omission will ultimately be where your code of conduct is most critiqued. If you decide not to invite any little ones, informing invitees well in advance is of utmost importance.

Set your expectations early to allow parents to make alternative arrangements for childcare. Having guests expect to bring their children only to find out they’re not welcome once they’ve already RSVPed is when conflict often occurs. On the other hand, some guests may embrace the exclusion of children and look forward to a night out. Either way, being considerate of a parent’s need to plan in advance will be appreciated – it shows that even without an invite, you’ve considered their children. The easiest way to make your wishes well-known is to state your expectations within your stationery suite. Including a small note that

children are welcome or that the venue is not suitable for those under a certain age can be printed directly on your invite. Consider adding a more personal message to guests who might want to bring their wee ones to make it clear whether they’re invited or not. Avoid any confusion or hard feelings by addressing your invites specifically, whether it’s to just a Mr. and Mrs. or the whole family. Whether it’s their presence or absence, children at weddings can be a touchy subject. Planning your party the way you want while keeping parents in mind beforehand is the best way to keep hard feelings away from your happy day.

The

&Short

of

Engagements Is there an ideal amount of time to wait until you wed the one you love?

H

e asked and you’ve answered but now all anyone wants to know is ‘when?’ Besides the proposal story, friends and family will be anxious to know just how long they have to wait until you walk down the aisle. According to multiple wedding industry sources, most couples are engaged for 13-18 months before saying “I do.” With just over a year to land a location, pick a photographer and book a band, the average engaged couple has plenty of time to plan their perfect day. But is there a perfect amount of time to be engaged before taking the trip down the aisle? The short answer is no; just as your wedding

50 Traditions By DARPAN

day should be a deeply personal event, the time spent planning it should be the same – with benefits and challenges to both a short or long engagement period. Between dates and dresses, songs and speeches, and colours and cake, planning a wedding can become extremely overwhelming. With years between the engagement ring and wedding ring, a longer engagement can allow couples time off from wedding planning when they need a break from the stress of decision-making. On the other hand, more time may mean more time to second guess yourself. It’s easy to become overloaded with ideas and have

difficulty deciding on what you really want if you’re not under pressure to do so. A longer than average engagement allows for extra time to prepare for your marriage. This may include finishing school, focusing on your career, or saving up for bigger purchases as a couple. It may also give you more time to save for the large expense of your wedding day. However, just because you have a longer engagement period, doesn’t mean you should wait too long to start looking into some of the bigger decisions. With venues, DJ’s and photographers booking years in advance, leaving decisions too late may leave you without the details you’ve dreamt of. While you’re busy planning (or not planning) your big event, a long engagement also leaves lots of time for major life changes to take place. Births, deaths, promotions, transfers and other weddings all have the potential to delay your big day the longer you put it off. Without reason to wait, weddings can be planned quite quickly. A shorter engagement period – within months of a proposal – will undoubtedly bring about questions from nosy naysayers about why you’re rushing your nuptials – but that’s no reason to prolong your engagement if you know it’s plenty of time to plan the party you want. On the other hand, if you have a specific date or place in mind, it may already be booked. A short engagement can force you to settle on details that weren’t quite what you wanted. A shorter engagement leaves less room for confusion and potentially less to spend your money on. You won’t have time to add in unnecessary details that only add to the cost. It is much easier to stay on track and plan a simpler, smaller event in a shorter period of time. Unfortunately, a shorter engagement can limit your time spent searching out deals, leaving you to pay more with less time to shop around. While the details of your wedding will undoubtedly differ from others, so too might the length of your engagement – and that’s totally okay. There are no rules or damaging statistics either way that should have you reconsidering how long until your fiancé becomes your groom. Your engagement should be a time of celebration and that timing should be all up to you.

with the khandaan and most importantly, no drama between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Being part of two families is also beneficial – it means more celebrations and parties, more people to care for you and wish you on your birthday, more gifts, and so on. It also means remembering more birth dates, anniversaries and special days of each family member. Tip: Be nice and understanding towards your spouse’s family. It will take time to get used to them, but they are trying to accept you too.

Arranging your

Married

One of the good things of any marriage is that you have a person to call your own and to share your thoughts and interests with. This point is more meaningful in an arranged marriage. While getting to know your spouse during the initial years of marriage, you can share your interests, hobbies and opinions with each other. The best part – you have someone to do things with – like going on trips, watching movies, trying out different cuisines, or going to that dreadful dentist appointment or to a boring event you just cannot skip. Tip: Go out on dates and plan activities you both want to do. Click lots of pictures and make lots of memories. This will help you understand each other better.

Bad: Sharing and adjustments can ne annoying

BY PETRINA D'SOUZA

A few adjustments here and there can turn an arranged marriage into a successful and happy one

W

e often hear or are part of debates on arranged marriage vs. love marriage. So which one is better? As both types of marriages have their own good and bad features, finding a winner is difficult. Being in an arranged marriage myself, I can only talk about how amazing or tiring a union set up by families can be. To start with, the concept of arranged marriage is changing. As per an online definition, an arranged marriage is “a marriage planned and agreed to by the families or guardians of the bride and groom, who have little or no say in the matter themselves.” While the former part of the definition is completely true, the latter is not. In this century, the bride and groom are totally involved in the process of finding a partner and have the right to

52 Traditions By DARPAN

accept or reject a marriage proposal. In fact, they have the freedom to talk, meet and be friendly with the prospective groom or bride. Once partners are chosen, families talk, the wedding is planned, and vows are taken. Now comes the part of living the happily-ever-after. Well, truth be told, it’s not always a happy picture. Here’s my list on two good and bad things about an arranged marriage.

Good: No family conflicts or saas-bahu scenes As both families have a say on the union, one can assume the couple will have a pleasant married life with the love and support of all family members. This could mean no problems adjusting

This could be a good or bad point. Sharing or adjustment plays a major role in all kinds of marriages. While in a love marriage you have already adapted to your partner’s moods or ways, these values take time to develop in an arranged marriage. At times, it can be annoying – like sharing the TV remote, favourite food, bills, bathroom, among other things. But at the same time, you have someone to share your problems and household chores with, talk about how good or bad your day was, get advice on things you can’t decide, and look after you when unwell. Tip: Communicate with your partner as much as possible. Make sure to have atleast one meal together and talk about how your day was or anything else that you wish to share. Don’t be reserved.

Bad: 2-minute noodles cannot be your daily diet Gone are the days when you could eat the easy-tomake noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Being in an arranged marriage, you must understand and follow the needs of each other. Cooking can be tiring, but if the couple decides to do it together, it is not only quicker but fun as well. Try out new dishes with your favourite foods. You will love the outcome. Tip: Cook easy but nutritious meals together. Eat outside or have ready-to-eat meals once in a while when you are too tired or lazy to cook.

Planning

T

he charm, excitement and thrill of a destination wedding is undoubtedly tempting. And when it comes to South Asian weddings, there is nothing better than a gathering with family, friends and relatives from around the world in a different or rather exotic setting. As more and more brides and grooms opt for destination weddings, here are some points to consider before you jump on the bandwagon.

LOCATION, LOCATION

HIRE A PRO

Not only does location reflect your mood and wedding theme, but also impacts factors such as travel, time, and overall budget. Think about how the location resonates your personalities as a couple, your experiences, connection or tie it with a special moment such as the proposal, first date etc. Also consider what your guest would take away from the location.

If your wedding is taking place in a setting somewhat alien to you (language, culture, region), hiring a local event planner can be greatly advantageous. They might be able to get you the best deals within your budget, visit venues in advance, help uncover local talent you didn’t know about and a lot more to smoothen your planning process. If a planner is not in your budget, consider opting for a resort with an on-site coordinator.

EXPECT TO GO OVER-BUDGET Just because it’s a destination wedding, does not mean it is going to be cheap. Guest count makes a major difference and because South Asian weddings are more than a one-day event involving friends and relatives from different corners, it can get challenging to keep control of the budget. Look at cutting down your guest list and the number of events you will host. Maybe tie up events together to save time and cost.

CUSTOMS AND SHIPPING Destination weddings are another ballgame altogether. The less challenges and hassles, the better. Customs and restrictions are one important aspect couples often miss. Avoid shipping anything important that you might need on your wedding day. With strict customs and shipping policies across various borders, your package might end up sitting at customs for clearance longer than you expected.

MARRIAGE REGULATIONS If your wedding is taking place at a foreign location, research its marriage regulations and country’s laws for obtaining marriage licenses and certificates. Depending on the location, you might have to reach there quite in advance for medical examinations. If marriage legalities seem complicated, consider having the legal ceremony at home and a symbolic ceremony at the destination.

SEND INVITATIONS EARLY Send out invitations well in advance and request your guests to RSVP early so you can make necessary arrangements. Don’t forget to ask for special requirements such as accessibility and allergies to prevent last-minute chaos at the venue. The last thing you want is an unhappy guest complaining to other guests.

56 Traditions By DARPAN

FOR THE GUESTS Make sure to prepare a well-detailed document for guests informing and advising them about what’s required and what’s not. Up-to-date passports, vaccinations, weather, resort amenities, and other details will be helpful for them to truly enjoy the wedding.

GO WITH THE FLOW Your location reflects your personalities and so your wedding décor, food and other arrangements should have an essence of the location. Blend the local cuisine, flavour and décor with your wedding and in fact make use of the local resources as much as you can. It’s a destination wedding after all!

video for all of eternity, and b. it comes from the heart. And quite frankly, the heart doesn’t lie. Let us begin, shall we? Take notes. Take out a piece of paper and pen, and think mapping out your verbiage for the big day. Notate why you fell in love with the woman of your dreams, what love means to you, or what you foresee the future to be with your lover. These words will pour like a waterfall after a few minutes of brainstorming. This is stage one. Stage two includes edits, and lots of them. Walk away from your paper and pen for a little while, even a few days if need be, to clear your head and allow for the words to settle in your brain. Come

back with a fresh head, and string the short notes together into full sentences and then paragraphs. Is this making more sense now? Right, now you have got it. Walk away again for another few days. Trust me. More ideas of wedding day bliss may come to you in this interim period. Stage three includes more edits. This may seem repetitive, but you will thank me in the long run. Add quips, un-corny jokes, and natural pauses (you can note these in between the lines if need be) into your loving masterpiece. These usually come into play before and after each paragraph in a public speech. You are almost there, buddy. Stage four consists of polish and practice; you do not want to feel uncomfortable or uneasy in front of family and friends, now do you? Treat this like one of the most important assignments of life you are to ever tackle. Practice your final speech out loud several times, then work your way in front of a mirror or even a pet. Then when you build confidence, try the speech out in front of your groomsmen; they will be brutally honest with you, which is what you need. Make any edits you’d like a few days before the wedding, then repeat this last step. On the big day, wake up with a fresh head and read your speech out loud one or two more times. You will nail this, I promise. Love will carry you home, and your bride may just reward you for your efforts after…well, you can fill in the blanks on your own. Happy wedding day, sir, and congratulations!

Advice Regular meditation encourages mindfulness allowing you to live in the present moment and have efficient control over emotions and daily chores.

Write a journal A journaling exercise is a safe and powerful way to release emotions you have recently been bottling up inside. Identify what’s bothering you and focus on addressing and confronting that emotion. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many emotions; relax and take your time.

Pamper yourself You’ve been brave duelling and multitasking dear bride and you deserve a pampering session. And there is nothing more fulfilling then doing this with your girlfriends. Eat right & drink right Don’t forget, your skin is a mirror to your health and well-being and at times like this when you are prone to stress and anxiety, it becomes even more pertinent to monitor your diet. Focus on fluids (water is the best!) and natural intake of sugar and fats. Maintain the right balance of diet and exercise. Remember, inner glow comes naturally when you are happy.

and think of this period as an opportunity to pamper yourself. Here’s how:

Between all the hustle and bustle, remember to renew those precious moments you enjoyed before getting engaged. Whether it’s a long drive, romantic dinner, movie night, beach walk or even a weekend getaway, make the most of your time together before the wedding to unwind, relax and remind yourselves of what is more important – your relationship.

Meditate

Manage time

You have probably heard this several times but the advice is worth heeding. Sit down 10 minutes early in the day and 10 minutes later in the evening for a meditation session. Focus on your inhale and exhale exercise and listen closely to your heartbeat. This is important to slow down your heart rate and relax body muscles and mind in synchronization.

Set your ship sailing much in advance. It’s easy to put things off for later when you know you have enough time, but rather use this time to your advantage. Designate deadlines to yourself and others and allocate time and budget as per your priorities. If everything goes as planned, you can assuredly be relaxed at a time when brides are losing their minds.

You’re losing sleep, having anxiety attacks, skin breakouts and what not – chaotic is the picture and dismay is the emotion. But you cannot let this be part of your ‘perfect wedding’ right? You certainly didn’t have words such as chaotic, dismay, stress and anxiety in your wedding planner, so you cannot have them creep in and ruin the precious moments leading up to the big day. Take a break

Keeping stress at bay should be your priority. And you do this by delegating tasks and duties to your trusted aides. Create a detailed execution plan and hand it over as per your aides’ expertise and experience. Limit yourself to supervising the major chunk of tasks only but keep crucial portfolios to yourself. Don’t try to wear too many hats.

Creative ways to woo your wedding party

W

hen it comes to popping the question, it’s no surprise that proposals have become increasingly elaborate. But what about the bridal party? Asking the most important people to stand beside

you on your big day has become more than just a quick phone call. Whether you make it meaningful or create something cheeky, a little creativity will surely make your request special.

64 Traditions By DARPAN

65

PRETTY PACKAGES • Pamper your party or prepare them for the big day by putting together a box of fun weddingrelated items that will surely surprise your VIPs when you ask them the all-important question. • Include all the essentials like nail polish, a water tumbler, and a survival kit of tissues, deodorant, and safety pins so they’re prepared. • Pamper them with an eye mask, nail kit, face mask, and polishes in your wedding colours. • Plan a fun-filled day of shopping together and include treats, drinks and a shopping list inside a customized tote bag.

FANCY FOOD • Maybe you and your friends have made most of your memories over food and drinks – it’s easy to pop the question to your potential bridal party while popping champagne or satisfying your sweet tooth. • Throw a brunch in honour of your closest bunch – invite all your prospective bridesmaids without letting them in on your surprise. • Customize wine labels or a box of chocolates, decorate cookies or create a custom ice cream container. • Fill a recipe box with index cards detailing the recipe for a perfect friendship with the last ingredient being your request to be in the bridal party.

Planning

FUN FAVOURS • Depending on the personalities of your closest pals, have something custom-made in your colours or individual to each girl. • Have them decode your hidden request with a personalized jigsaw puzzle or customized crossword. • Raise a toast to your favourite people with wine glasses or coffee cups created just for them. • Hide your sweet message inside a fortune cookie. • Think your faves deserve a ring, too? Use a Ring Pop as a sweet way to bring back memories as you propose. • Throwback to your younger days with a homemade friendship bracelet or best friend necklaces that aren’t complete without the other half. • Send a luggage tag to your faraway friends addressed to the ‘bridesmaid-to-be’. • Add a sweet saying (or a silly warning like ‘no ugly crying!’) to a handkerchief to catch any tears come the big day.

• Just like the ladies, consider customizing an item that means a lot to you and your guys. Personalize the label on your favourite bottle of beer or the cigars you’ll share in honour of your celebration. Whether it be suspenders, socks, coasters or a watch, hope your guys will help you out with the fun way you’ve asked them to be your groomsman.

DON’T FORGET THE GUYS! • While the groom-to-be probably just planned the proposal, the men he chooses to stand at his side deserve some spoiling, as well. • Groomsman may need a survival kit, too, so ask your question in the form of a hangover kit for a cheeky way to prep for the biggest party you’ll likely ever throw.

Online Shopping for

Wedding

Trousseau

While online shopping offers comfort, it can take longer. So be sure to plan well in advance if you intend to collect most of your trousseau online. Regardless of what the website says, give yourself more than a month so that in case of exchanges or refunds, you do not lose out.

S

hopping for your wedding trousseau is one of the most challenging but rewarding part of wedding preparations. Rewarding because a lot of the items selected are going to be with you when you start your life in a new home; challenging because it has become so hard to pick the perfect pieces available at the perfect price.

72

An all-time favourite of both men and women, the store is based in New Delhi, but ships worldwide. It has options from a wide variety of designer brands and has become a favourite for those looking for contemporary, modern wear.

LINEN CHEST If you are into simpler and modern-looking designs when it comes to bed linen, Linen Chest should be your go-to option. It offers a wide variety of deals and discounts that you can definitely benefit from. They have both solids and patterns and a wider colour palette.

AZMEH AHMED COUTURE

BY SHANEL KHALIQ Perhaps, the availability of choices is one reason why selecting items for your trousseau has become so challenging. But preparing a trousseau means collecting an assortment of the best things; each of which needs to be handpicked from a variety of locations. This is where the blessing of online shopping comes in. Owed to their busy lifestyle, a

number of brides are now assembling their wedding trousseau online. There are a number of decent options available for this. And what’s better, now you can have the best items from anywhere in the world, without having to ask your cousins or aunts to bring it for you when they make a trip!

A relatively new designer label based in Pakistan, Azmeh Ahmed Couture has recently become a go-to option for many brides because of the brilliant cuts being offered at reasonable prices. If you want a few outfits and don’t mind designer replicas, then this should be your pick. They have been shipping bridal orders around the world too and have received positive feedback.

Planning

Owed to their busy lifestyle, a number of brides are now assembling their wedding trousseau online. There are a number of decent options available for this.

DESI ROYALE One of our very own favourites in Surrey, Desi Royale’s webpage is neat and classy. It was started by Dal Dhanoa, when he himself went to India to get married. What sets Desi Royale apart is the strong customer service that Dhanoa has made a priority. In addition to clothing, they also offer accessories and clutches. So, if you are having a hard time finding that perfect maang tikka, you might want to visit Desi Royale and get it delivered right at your doorstep.

NISHAT LINEN One of the oldest names in bed linen in Pakistan, Nishat has now established itself as an international brand. They are now shipping globally and boast not only good quality fabric but also a mix of ethnic and contemporary designs, ranging from truck art to more sombre pastels.

MEENA BAZAAR A relatively new name in the market, having started in 2014, but one that has built a solid reputation for itself. Originally based in the US, Meena Bazaar ships all over the world. One of the best things about this store is that you have the option to select the currency you want to pay in. It has a wide collection of designer sarees, lehengas and kurtis to choose from. The store also has outlets in a number of countries in the Middle East as well and is a favourite particularly among the South Asian diaspora.

74 Traditions By DARPAN

BOUTIQUE DE LUXE This is one of the best places in the country to order Indian wedding jewellery and accessories from. If you want to wear artificial jewellery on your big day in some of the best designs, then this should be your choice. Their open phone lines speak volumes about their customer service and attention to detail.

While all these options have proven their quality and customer service, it however is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure the return and refund policy of each store. Many a times, unpleasant online shopping experiences are the result of not enough research. Online shopping is a slightly different experience than shopping in person, even though we expect it to be the same or even better. The way we sometimes leap on to something we eye in a store, we tend to do that more often in online shopping. But it is important to remember, that we cannot ensure the quality or feel the material online and so research becomes paramount. Reading customer reviews should be the first step towards your research. This is one of the biggest blessings of social media and the online world, so do not forget to make use of it. While online shopping offers comfort, it can take longer. So be sure to plan well in advance if you intend to collect most of your trousseau online. Regardless of what the website says, give yourself more than a month so that in case of exchanges or refunds, you do not lose out. Moreover, don’t get too caught up by deals and discounts. Sometimes, a very good deal online could be a trap and you want to avoid that. Many a times, a higher price and delivery cost is being incurred because you are getting a quality product at your doorstep without having to spend all that time and effort in person.

Goila

C

hef Saransh Goila is a breath of fresh air in India’s vibrantly flourishing culinary world. A few years ago, the spirited chef, created waves in India after winning the Food Food Maha Challenge and from there began the start of an exciting journey; his show Roti Rasta aur India was one of them. Roti Rasta aur India, a 100-day journey undertaken by Chef Goila covered 25 states and documented the expansive culinary richness of India. “The journey was not a cake walk. Sometimes I had to work with just one sauté-pan over burning coal with blunt knives. Apart from production challenges, travelling 100-days straight by road was a physically daunting task. The biggest challenge was to stay fit, happy and shiny for 100 days on the go,” describes Chef Goila. This talented chef weaved his experiences from Roti Rasta aur India into a book called India on My Platter.

What’s the best part about being a chef? The creativity. The art of blending spices and vegetables and creating recipes is very exciting. It allows you to be a new person everyday!

How would you define your style of cooking? Very home-style! I learn from the streets of India and hence my cooking style is also adopted from there. It’s carefree and wholesome. I like cooking meals that leave you satisfied more than entertained.

76

What has been the best advice you’ve received in this industry? It has been from my mentor Chef Sanjeev Kapoor – You do what you have to do – have a 20-year plan and there will always be naysayers, what only matters eventually is what you believe in.

Your all-time favourite cuisine or dish? Sindhi kadhi chawal that mom makes any day!

There is unity in the culinary diversity of India”

What is the biggest cooking blunder anyone can make? To cook food without love! That’s a big blunder!

Chocolate Golgappas With Candied Peanuts & Vanilla Milk A twist in the tale: Golgappas that are covered with chocolate and coconut, stuffed with candied peanuts and strawberries and water that is pure vanilla shake!

Ingredients for salted candied peanuts ½ cup peanuts 3 tbsp granulated sugar 1 tbsp water 1 tsp vanilla extract Sea salt

Method • In a large heavy bottomed pan, combine sugar, water and vanilla extract and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. • Once up to a boil, continue to stir and cook over medium-high until the water evaporates and the sugar syrup seizes and crystallizes.

sugar will start to melt and caramelize. Stir this to coat the peanuts until all the sugar has caramelized and no more granulated sugar remains. • Remove from heat and immediately stir in one teaspoon vanilla extract and then turn out onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sea salt. Let it cool completely and then break up nuts into individual pieces.

• Continue stirring and the crystallized

Ingredients for vanilla milk 1 cup milk, preferably whole, very cold ½ vanilla bean/pod ¼ tsp vanilla extract 2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Method

Final presentation of dish

• Pour the milk into a blender.

• Add a layer of candied peanuts into the shot glass.

• Using just the tip of a sharp paring knife, slice the vanilla bean open lengthwise. • Scrape the seeds into the milk by running the back, or dull side, of the knife along the length of the vanilla bean. • Add the vanilla extract, followed by the ice cream.

• Top it with a layer of chopped strawberries. • Place the chocolate golgappas on top of this shot glass. • Serve three of these golgappas with a small shot of vanilla milk.

• Blend and then refrigerate.

Ingredients for chocolate golgappa 4 hard shell golgappas 200 gm dark chocolate, cut into chunks ½ cup each shredded coconut + colourful sprinkles 4 satay sticks 4 strawberries

80 Traditions By DARPAN

Method • Crack open the golgappa from the top with a light hand, make sure the crater is not too big and is cracked evenly. Push a satay stick or fork into each golgappa (from the back side or the hard side). • Place your topping choices: shredded coconut and sprinkles into individual bowls. • Heat the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave until almost fully melted. Remove from the heat and stir: it should fully melt and be warm, not hot.

• Hold the golgappa on top of the melted chocolate bowl. Pour the chocolate on it with a spoon, allow the extra chocolate to drip back into the bowl. • Using your hands or a spoon, sprinkle your topping of choice onto the freshly dipped golgappa. It is easiest to hold the golgappa horizontally and close to the core and slowly spin it while spooning on the toppings. • Place on a greased parchment paper cracked side down, remove the satay stick and cover the hole with a little melted chocolate.

• Repeat the same process for the three other golgappas and then place them altogether in the refrigerator until the chocolate is set, should take about 15 minutes. • Slice the strawberry head neatly. Keep it separately for garnish. Chop the rest of the strawberries into small squares. Keep them aside in a bowl. • Next step - get ready for final presentation.

DAVID

YURMAN A Treasury of Stunning Motifs BY GARIMA GOSWAMI

92 Traditions By DARPAN

93

Designer

When and why did you decide to venture into the jewellery designing industry? DY: It was an evolutionary process that probably began when I was 11-years-old and discovered a book of prehistoric cave paintings which ignited my love for art. I discovered at a young age that I was good with my hands. I was also fortunate enough to come into contact with sculptor Ernesto Gonzales who taught me the process of direct welding and how to create three dimensional forms using molten metal rods. In the 1970’s I created a direct welded sculptural necklace for my then girlfriend, now wife Sybil. A gallery owner asked to sell it in her space and it sold out. That was really the beginning. SY: David and I then began creating jewellery which we sold at arts and crafts fairs. In 1980 we launched David Yurman. The company roots are based on our collaborative partnership; our exchange of ideas and artistic exploration.

Tell us about the David Yurman design style. How is your brand distinct from others? DY: Because I am a sculptor and Sybil an artist, we bring a unique and personal sensibility to our design style. You can see this in the structural nature of so many pieces in the collection as well as the use of colour. While the cable bracelet may be our iconic signature, our designs are very diverse, and continue to evolve. SY: A great example of a personal, unique and collaborative effort between myself, David, our design team and our workshop is our Supernova Collection. This partnership enables us to have a truer expression of our concepts. Supernova actually, is an evolution of many collections over the past years that come out of what we call the celestial group, they all come from the same root. It is the wonderment of us as humans here on Earth, looking at the night sky and realizing that we exist as a small part of a greater universe. David and I have spent many hours just gazing into the sky, seeing shooting stars and identifying constellations. Supernova in part, is a result of these experiences.

Which demographic does your brand appeal to the most? SY: We believe in attainable luxury. Jewellery has historically been an item that men – husbands, boyfriends, and fathers – have bought for the women in their lives. Our approach to jewellery has always been different; more democratic and inclusive. We believe that women should be able to buy jewellery for themselves, as it is an equal, if not more intimate, expression of personal style as with other elements of her wardrobe. The way I like to think of our client and our appeal is that a celebrity may send her assistant to pick up a statement piece from one of our stores, but the next day, that same assistant could return and select something for herself, too.

“We are touched by colours in the world, and it depends on how you feel emotionally for the range. You create a palette. David and I realized we didn’t have to separate the worlds of form and colour, sculpture and painting – they merged in jewellery” – Sybil Yurman. Where do you draw your inspiration from? DY: As a designer, my experience and the world that surrounds me are guiding principles that inform my work. This includes innovative materials and gemstones (my collection of gemstones from all over the world is very personal, not always acquired with a particular design in mind but for the pure pleasure of the stone) and a wide range of cultural influences. I also carry a sketch book with me at all times and am constantly drawing and doodling ideas and designs. I must have hundreds of these sketchbooks by now!

SY: We are touched by colours in the world, and it depends on how you feel emotionally for the range. You create a palette. David and I realized we didn’t have to separate the worlds of form and colour, sculpture and painting – they merged in jewellery.

Tell us about your latest collection? SY: One of our newest collections for Spring 2017 is Continuance. It’s sculpture, on the body. We engineered it to fall perfectly on the wrist or the neck, fit is important with jewellery, always. The pieces feature organic lines, and appear as untwisted forms of Cable; our version of deconstructing the Cable motif. Certain pieces in the collection are hand-set with gypsy set and pave diamonds, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the collection. As for bridal, we are seeing more interest in unconventional styles such as our faceted Delaunay engagement ring, with a striking emerald-cut diamond set in the east-west orientation and men’s Delaunay wedding band.

Do you have an all-timefavourite creation? DY: Impossible to say. Of course, we have a great fondness for the Renaissance bracelets as these were the original cable bracelets for which we have become known, but we could not name a favourite piece. As artists, we’re continually revisiting our work. It is an evolutionary process.

For the 2017 season, what kind of jewellery would you recommend to brides and grooms? Any tips you would like to give to brides and grooms before selecting jewellery? DY: We get asked this question a lot but this truly depends on the personality of the bride and groom. We would recommend that a couple go into a store and try on pieces, see what matches their lifestyle and feels best. SY: This is a piece of jewellery you’ll be wearing every day for the rest of your life, so it should be comfortable, everlasting and representative of your personal style.

anarkali with a black cropped jacket that was worn by Aishwariya Rai Bachchan. It turned out to be the winning garment, and even after so many years, continues to be a defining moment in my career as it validated my choice of fashion as a career.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your designs?

How is fashion in India evolving and influencing the global fashion scene? When we started out 18 years ago, there was a vacuum in the space for modern Indian clothes for the younger generation. The only options for young women was to get something stitched by the neighborhood tailor or alter their mother’s outfits. Going from there to now with big fashion weeks in India, social media, international buyers and bloggers flocking to India, I would say Indian fashion has become a major player and influencer in the international fashion scene. Now I see an increasing number of designers catering to a global consumer who wishes to wear her tradition with a dash of modern insouciance.

I am currently intrigued by the dark romanticism typically associated with murder mysteries and this has manifested itself in my summer 2017 collection ‘Lady M.’ This collection is in particular inspired by Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, its dazzling costume display, and is a nod to the nuanced finesse of high society dressing in the late 1930s.

Do you have a specific research process before you start a new project? My design process works in reverse to the norm. Silhouettes are the first thing that excite me – this is the first aspect I choose. I then move on to the embroidery and fabric, with the colour palette being chosen last. While designing for fashion week is a more streamlined process, I’m constantly looking for inspiration all through the year, and [then] put these together in three to four collections a year. I’m forever scouring through Pinterst, taking down notes, sketching in my diary. My design process is a bit erratic, but there is a method to the madness, and that is what gives every piece its essence and ties it together. I can’t design in isolation; it’s not just about the sketch for me. For a design to become a reality, it needs to be approached with a 4D attitude. You need to think about the person who will wear your design, the occasion it is meant for, the trend it takes a cue from; the colours, fabrics, and textures it utilizes, how comfortable it is, and whether it is within a justifiable budget. I believe in looking at the entire picture.

What inspires you the most in fashion? I am a very visually driven person, and textures and patterns (often from art,

Biggest fashion blunder any bride and groom can make?

What can we expect from Payal Singhal for 2017?

Having pre-conceived notions about what and what not to wear is the biggest mistake brides and grooms can make. Don’t be lazy or fixated about what works. Be openminded and try on as many styles as you can before making the final purchase. It’s important not to be a fashion victim. Dress according to your body type and choose something you’re comfortable in. Make a note of colours that have always looked good on, and try and choose from that palette, so that there’s no going wrong with the end result.

I started the year with my first solo show at Lakme Fashion Week in February. Inspired by the dark romanticism of the murder mystery Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, this Summer 2017 collection is a nod to the nuanced finesse of high society dressing in the late 1930s. 2017 will be an exciting year for our brand – we are revamping our online store for a more enhanced experience and have also launched our quarterly in-house magazine called PS Diary.

There is an alchemy when we work together. We can say with absolute conviction that one plus one equals more than two. What a privilege and a gift that meeting was and how glad we are to have decided on impulse and instinct to work together.” How is fashion in India evolving and influencing the global fashion scene? There was no formalised industry when we began three decades ago. No fashion design institutes and it wasn’t considered a serious career choice for anyone. All of that has changed in three decades, it is wonderful to witness that evolution. To see the opening of opportunities for those inclined towards design to educate, train and create for an ever growing market. And to know that design has become not merely acceptable but a covetable career path makes us so happy. India has always influenced art and creativity, and fashion is no exception. Whether it is the sari drape or the chudhidar or the bandgalla, these indigenous silhouettes have informed western design for decades in various forms; Indian textiles and embroideries too. Most luxe accessories and couture are embroidered in India today because our art and craft legacy is alive and kicking. We now need to go global with our creativity. There is no dearth of talent. It needs funding to market its wares within and outside India.

What has been the most defining moment of your career so far? There are far too many. Mentioning some

means leaving out so many others, all of which has been inspiring and defining. We can instead focus on two which we think of as transformational – first, the decision to combine forces and create as one. There is an alchemy when we work together. We can say with absolute conviction that one plus one equals more than two. What a privilege and a gift that meeting was and how glad we are to have decided on impulse and instinct to work together. Second, the fire that destroyed our home and studio. It was a crisis that wiped us out. It was a test of resolve, of faith and dedication, such a terrible thing, such a priceless lessonnever give up, never give in.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your designs? Artists live in a state of perpetual fascination, even when it is a time of creative block, one is fully immersed in that vacuum and

feeds off it. Everything is inspiration. The world outside and all that is in it casts myriad impressions upon the mind.; the mind plays with these. Art is the resultant expression of the interplay or dance between the external world and the internal imagination and compulsion to create. Art, architecture, history, travel, culture, moods, emotions, all of these dance together.

Biggest fashion blunder any bride and groom can make? To wear something that doesn’t thrill them, doesn’t represent their personal and unique sensibilities, aesthetics, sense of style and spirit.

NANDITA MAHTANI By GARIMA GOSWAMI

You have been in the fashion industry for a very long time. How have you and your work evolved? Not studying fashion, ironically, has been one of my greatest strengths. I have had no barriers or rules while designing. Everything I've learnt is through the industry and my experiences. I've gained immense technical knowledge with the help of my master, who has been with me since the beginning. Working has made me more patient and given me more confidence to focus and keep growing.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your designs? I'm always fascinated and highly inspired by my travels around the world. I was recently in New York and London, both fashion capitals, in their own way – I get to see the new, upcoming trends, styles, coloUrs during fashion week and on the streets before they actually hit the rest of the world. Coming back home, I'm filled with ideas that I like to experiment with, yet showcasing my aesthetics. My label, Nandita Mahtani is all about merging Indian embroideries and art with western silhouettes and fashion.

Do you have a specific research process before you start a new project? I like to be well informed and prepared before jumping into anything. I try and research as much as I can on things I'm working on. I cannot work in a mess, so every project begins with making mood boards, collecting fabric/ colour swatches, seeing enough options and references, studying what's in front of me, then creating.

What inspires you? Fashion is quite self-absorbed and that's what makes it so interesting and inspiring. Fashion is you, it reflects the personality, state of mind and thoughts of the designer. Every time you sketch, create a garment, style it or choreograph a fashion show, the garment tells a different story, depending on you. It's inspiring to see everyone's stories and have your own.

What has been the most defining moment of your career so far? I love multitasking! I don't think I can pin point which moment defines my career yet. I'm as enthusiastic as I was when I started out, and hopefully have a lot more to undertake. Aiming for the moon, I do not want to settle for anything lesser.

What can we expect from Nandita Mahtani in 2017? Love Genration is a new fashion forward brand, created by Dolly Sidhwani, Bhavana Panday, and myself. Our main aim is to make Love Genration the most loved brand globally. Side by side, I'm working on a new collection for my signature label, which will be released in 2017! So a lot yet to see!

The country’s compact size lets you experience diverse experiences in stunning landscapes every day. For starry-eyed romantics, you will find a heavenly array of places to declare your love year-round. Once a bustling Central Otago gold-mining town, Clyde sits beside the Clutha River and is popular with history buffs, cycling enthusiasts and walkers. But the jewel in Clyde’s crown is surely the lovingly restored Olivers Lodge and Stables, an elegantly historic accommodation complex that deserves every one of its five stars. Beautifully appointed with fabulous gardens, it’s no surprise that Olivers plays host to plenty of proposals. Featuring rooms with claw-foot baths and wide beds, not to mention the exquisite food, wine and

service in their bakery, deli and brewery, this is a place you won’t want to leave. A long walk with your loved one is a magical way to nurture a relationship, making the Te Araroa Trail an outstanding place to pop the question. Starting at the tip of the North Island and finishing in Bluff in the South, this journey takes 5080 days per island to complete. If your relationship can withstand that, you’re a shoo-in for a lifelong commitment. With so many picturesque spots, it’s hard to pick just one on-bended-knee moment, but it’s recommended to stop about halfway along on the Paekakariki Trail, just outside Wellington.
