With the aim of presenting the best to our readers and supporters, our wedding magazine comprises all elements that can make your special day a fun-filled, entertaining and successful one, filled with romance and style ofcourse. Our cover for this issue is the beautiful and stylish Sonam Kapoor. The talented daughter of superstar Anil Kapoor has made her presence felt in the celeb world through her acting skills and fashion sense. Sonam, who radiates style, charm and elegance, shares with Darpan her views on marriage, the qualities she looks for in her Mr. Right, and what her ideal wedding day will be like. Thinking of your wedding outfit? Seek inspiration from the beautiful and

elegant bridal collections by famous designers like JJ Valaya, Shyamal and Bhumika, and brands like Diva’ni. If you are the kind of bride who likes to stand out and make a fashion statement, our piece on fusion brides or bridal looks is a must-read. Talking about fashionable brides, Traditions highlights two recently-held celebrity weddings in B-town − Salman Khan’s sister Arpita’s royal wedding to Aayush Sharma, and actors Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu’s simple and intimate one. Check out the designer outfits the bridal couples wore, and know some intimate details of their royal affair. One can’t leave out the element of beauty when talking about weddings. Our issue includes expert advice on skin care, the right cosmetics, and hair products to ensure that you are a radiant bride on your big day. Our article on ‘Shop the Look’ focuses on the Pantone Colour of the Year 2015 – Marsala, and two other looks that are very much in vogue for brides. Destination weddings, making a stylish entry, wedding props, creative

invites and favours, are some of the many trends that make the celebration memorable and different from the rest. This issue sheds light on the recent wedding trends, along with creative tips to incorporate them in your own. Now that the wedding is over, the focus shifts to honeymoon. Preparing for the honeymoon has become as important as preparing for the wedding. Now, couples are investing maximum time and planning to make sure that their honeymoon is as romantic and enjoyable as possible. Our article on Top Destinations for 2015 gives you a glimpse of the best honeymoon places to spend quality time with your partner. Also, our feature on couples sharing their love story and describing the special moments at their wedding adds a nice romantic touch to the issue. We hope that Traditions contributes in a big way towards the planning and success of your special day. Darpan Team wishes you congratulations on your upcoming wedding. May your happily ever after be as beautiful as a fairy tale.

he elegantly charmed everyone as a con bride in her last release ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, where she donned not just one, but sixteen different bridal attires. However, talk marriage with this glamorous girl and Sonam Kapoor quips,

“I am married to my job.” No doubt, the leggy lass is neck-deep in her work, but certainly that doesn’t mean she is completely shunning the bliss of matrimony, as she smiles and says, “Of course, I have nothing against marriage, I do believe in the institution of marriage, and hopefully when I find my Mr. Right, I shall tie the knot. However, right now, I want to focus on my work because I want to be an actor all my life, not that I cannot be one after I marry. I can, but right now my focus is

solely my work.”

CoverStory

I do believe in marriage, but one should get into it only when they are ready for commitment and has found the right person. Marriage comes with a lot of responsibilities, and you need to be ready for it. I want to have a successful marriage, not just for the sake of it. Whenever I will get married, I will ensure that I work towards it to make it a success.”

Having said that, what will happen if she stumbles upon her Mr. Right in between of her work? After all, love can happen anywhere, anytime… isn’t it? She grins mischievously, “True, when that happens… then I shall see, what has to be done. But till then, I don’t wish to lose my focus.” Well, Sonam may still want to keep marriage at a bay, but what about her parents, aren’t they busy hunting for the perfect guy for their daughter? “No, thank god for that,” she sighs, “My family is not narrow-minded or old fashioned. They are today’s parents and there is no pressure for anything. They understand that my career is important to me and they know when I want to, I will get married.” While Sonam has made her point clear about being loyal to her career at the moment, as opposed to settling down, one wonders what is her ideal man checklist like? What are the qualities that one should possess to sweep her off her feet? “Oh, he has a very tough act to follow because I have very high expectations,” she laughs and continues, “I am very

idealistic, and I expect the person to be as idealistic. He should be someone who is ambitious for himself and someone who wants to do something in his life. And of course he should love me immensely and should be able to keep me happy." The Kapoor gal doesn’t seem like someone who will get lured by someone’s bank balance… “Of course not,” she squeals, “What appeals to me first and foremost is the intelligence. And then, the potential to do something in life.” Having grown up on romantic novels like Jane Eyre, Bride And Prejudice, Emma etc… Sonam is romantic at heart, but again, the small gestures matter to her the most as she says, “Someone knowing little things about me can floor me completely. I am not into some grand gestures, solitaires, and all. But small things matters to me the most. I don’t believe in Valentine’s Day and all, nor do I want any special gifts on those days, but simply knowing the small things that can make me happy ‒ like my favourite colour, food, music etc

is enough.” Sonam indeed has some simple yet unconventional demands in life, unlike other girls her age, which makes one curious to know her thoughts on marriage in general, even though, it is not on cards anytime soon. “Like I said, I do believe in it, but one should get into it only when they are ready for commitment and has found the right person. Marriage comes with a lot of responsibilities and you need to be ready for it. I want to have a successful marriage, not just for the sake of it. Whenever I will get married, I will ensure that I work towards it to make it a success,” she exclaims. Speaking of a successful marriage, in a day and age when the divorce rate is high and so many relationships are going kaput, what according to her is the key to a lasting bond? “People today don’t take commitment seriously. It is very easy for everyone to walk in and walk out of a relationship,” she says thoughtfully before adding, “According to me, a relationship needs lot of patience, lots of give and take, and accepting one another with faults.” Stating her parents, Anil and Sunita Kapoor, as examples, she says, “I have seen my parents… they dated each other for 11 years before getting married, and then they have been married for almost 31 years now… it has been that long and undoubtedly they still love each other immensely. Both of them have their flaws, both of them have some annoying habits which they hate in each other, but they love each other despite their flaws. So basically you need to stick it out.” She further points out, “We youngsters don’t know how to stick it out…we don’t even try. People do not work hard enough on relationships. It is hard work to make a marriage work. If you really love the person, then you make that effort to work towards it.” Must say, the style icon speaks wisely. So how does she envision her dream wedding? It can’t just be a simple regular affair for our fashionista. Her reply, yet again

is unpredictable, as she says, “I don’t know, I have never thought about my wedding day. I am not one of those girls who have grown up thinking about weddings. For me, it is more about the kind of life I will lead with the man I am married to, as opposed to the kind of party it will be like. Because the party is just going to last for three days, and a marriage is supposed to be for a lifetime. So no I don’t think about it.” Like Sonam mentioned earlier, marriage does come with many responsibilities and often demands a lot of change in life. Will she ever change for the man of her dreams after she has tied the knot? “No, one should never change for anyone. I have never understood this concept,” her voice is full of passion as she speaks, “You shouldn’t change. In fact, a relationship should nurture you, should help you to become better. Whoever you are supposed

to be with, needs to make you a better person as oppose to change you. A relationship enriches you, helps you to be a better version of yourself, not to be somebody else. stands, partner swapping etc, what is her opinion on all this? “I don’t have an opinion,” comes her pat reply, “If it works for someone, good for them. I don’t judge anybody, whatever makes somebody happy, and whatever suits the person, it is his or her choice. I don’t have strong opinions about it at all. I still believe marriage to be a sacred union of two people. And when I get married, I will work on it to ensure that it has a solid standing.” On that positive note, Sonam Kapoor sums up the interview.

Arpita Khan’s Palace Wedding

T

he most-talked about Bollywood wedding last year was superstar Salman Khan’s sister Arpita’s marriage to Aayush Sharma, who comes from a political background. The couple married on November 18, 2014, at the beautiful Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad, followed by a reception in Mumbai on November 21. This grand filmy affair, right from the day of announcement to the actual wedding day, was all glitz and glamour. From the minute details to the elaborate guest list, every little aspect of the wedding was at the forefront of all social media. Tweets and posts flooded social media sites right from the beginning of the pre-wedding events to the post-wedding fun. Arpita and Aayush’s reception was all glittered with the presence of top, legendary, and young Bollywood celebrities that added to the Khans stature. This magnificent Bollywood celebration-of-the-year was attended by several A-listed celebrities from the political, business and entertainment world. About 46 rooms of the palace hotel – where the wedding took place – was booked for the guests, along with lavish arrangements for the VIP guests who enjoyed their stay at the suites – namely three Grand Royal Suites, seven Royal Suites and three Historical Suites. The newlyweds has the one and only Presidential suite of the hotel.

Soha Ali Khan’s Intimate Wedding

T

he other wedding, not as elaborate but just as significant in B-town, was when love birds Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu decided to tie the knot on January 25, 2015. Their big day was an intimate affair that took place at their residence in Mumbai, and was attended by close friends and family. Despite the couple’s intention to keep their wedding a private affair, it generated interest and attention from all spheres. And why wouldn’t it? After all, this much-awaited wedding belonged to the Nawabs of the film industry. The Pataudi daughter chose to keep it minimal on her wedding day as she decided to wear a Sabyasachi outfit – a cream-coloured lehenga with an orange dupatta. Groom Kunal matched her outfit in a white-gold sherwani and a silk safa. The bride’s sister-in-law, Kareena Kapoor Khan, played it down in a dark-coloured salwar suit at the mehndi ceremony. But she decked up for the wedding ceremony in a pink and white Manish Malhotra sari, and went all out in a shimmery lehenga, also by good friend Manish, for the reception. The Kapoor ladies, Karisma Kapoor and mom Babita, attended the wedding looking radiant and glamorous as ever.

Sumita & Beant Photographed by Studio 12

The First Meeting Sumita: We met in NewYork – the city of Love and Labels. I was visiting the USA and Canada with a friend. Our trip was inspired from Sex and the City, a show that every single independent woman struggling to find the right guy can relate to. Beant was visiting NYC from California with his friends for a wedding. In December of 2013, we were walking on the streets of Manhattan at about 2 am all rugged up due to the cold, when Beant with his friend Paul spotted us at an intersection from across the road. As they were walking towards us, Beant stopped and asked us if we knew of any bars in the area, but I didn’t since we weren’t from New York. We motioned to the bar in the direction from where they were coming from and explained that we were heading there and they decided to follow us.

46 Traditions By DARPAN

After talking for about an hour and getting to know each other a bit, I realized that we had to leave since we were running late for our early morning flight to Toronto. As we were leaving, Paul came up to me and gave me a napkin with Beant’s number and “Mr. Beans” written on it. After we said good bye to each other, Beant was so excited that he was doing pushups on the street. The next day Beant added me on Facebook and we started chatting and lost track of time. We met again after a couple of weeks in San Francisco during our trip, and that’s where we fell in love. The strange thing here is that I met Beant exactly the same way as Carrie (the main character in Sex and the City) meets the love of her life, on the streets of NYC. When I had watched that show, I thought of it being a fairy tale story and never ever imagined

that it could happen to me. After having so much pressure from my family to get married, I had told myself that after this trip I would just marry whoever my parents suggest. I had given up on finding true love and had convinced myself that maybe he wasn’t out there. This trip was my last bachelorette trip and I found him right when I was least expecting it!

told that it was his friend’s surprise birthday party, so all of his friends met at Beant’s house to board the Limo party bus to head to the beach. When we arrived, Beant took me for a little walk to the spot where it was written on the sand in big letters in a heart shape, “Will you marry me?’ There was silence for a minute, he got on his knee, and I heard our favourite song playing on the boom box, “If I lose myself tonight, it will be by your side,” and as I looked back, all of his friends and cousins were standing together far away holding big signs saying “SAY YES,” and I said yes.

The Wedding Day It was an international wedding with bridesmaids from Australia, France, Italy, India, Canada and USA. Our favourite moments were taking funny pictures with the bridesmaids and the groomsmen. We believe that it was the best group of bridesmaids and groomsmen since they mingled with each other so well that they even partied together before and after the wedding day and are still in touch through AussieWedsCali chat group.

Advice for married couples: We have a three step rule whenever we have any problem: 1. Talk 2. Drink 3.Romance

What are your goals as a couple? To keep the spark, enthusiasm, passion and unconditional love alive forever that we started with between ourselves.

Strengths of your marriage: We can talk to each other about everything and anything.

The Wedding Jasmin: Our wedding truly was a dream come true. Sunny’s whole family rented out an entire hotel and our guests came from all over the world. Our wedding was in Vancouver; Sunny rolled out in style in a Rolls Royce and married me taking me from my home in a horse and carriage.

Favourite Moment

A little joke we whispered and exchanged right after we took our last lavan (vows). Our secret. If you see us, ask us. Rolling the Rolls

Royce through the McDonald drive-thru was also another classic Sunny and Jasmin moment.

The Attire

Jasmin: Sunny and I both wanted to do something unique! I knew from the minute I was designing my wedding outfit that I wanted to do something different, besides having the colour to be peach, my vision of a ‘D shape’ chunni and a train turned into reality. I was speechless when I saw my reception outfit. It was exactly how I had envisioned it and I fell in love with the cutwork and silk lining. Sunny’s salwar Sherwani was stunning, right from the antique buttons that matched my lehenga, the pearls, and the mint green piping that tied in with Sunny’s side of the family; it was amazing. Dave from Well Groomed and his staff are talented at what they do. For the reception, Sunny had a custom white

The Reception Our reception was absolutely amazing. We held it at the brand new Aria Banquet Hall. It was a magical night in such a beautiful venue. We were one of the first few wedding receptions to book that hall. Our decor with the flower wall was picture perfect. The best part was that we had artist Raginder Momi aka Violinder fly in from Los Angeles and perform for us. He also serenaded us with his violin to our John Legend slow dance song.

Where did you honeymoon? Rome, Florence, Sorrento/Amafli Coast, Venice, Italy, Paris and France.

The best part was that we had artist Raginder Momi aka Violinder fly in from Los Angeles and perform for us. He also serenaded us with his violin to our John Legend slow dance song.” What have been some of the biggest challenges you have overcome as a couple? One simple answer….a long distance relationship.

How long did you know each other before you got married?

We have known each other our whole lives.

How important is it to share interests and beliefs? Or do opposites attract? It’s very important, and we like to think opposites compliment each other.

What have you grown to appreciate about each other? Each other’s commitment to love each other till death does us apart.

If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be? Marriage will ultimately test your patience and ability to be understanding of each other, so don’t stop yourself from saying what’s on your mind!

Nikki & Bhupinder Photographed by Amrit Photography The First Meeting

our discussions are fun banter that is filled with laughter and fun, which brings us closer and creates a lot of positive experiences. It is the ease with one another that we love the most and how we are comfortable with one another.

We met through family, who thought we would be perfect for one another. Bhupinder had come to Vancouver for a family event where it would have been perfect for us to meet, but as luck would have it, we did not meet or start talking until he returned back to New York. Our relationship has been primarily long distance, but has flourished Bhupinder: The proposal was kind of a funny and his family was right – we are perfect for story, we had two proposals. I had just come one another! back from seeing Nikki in Vancouver and knew that I wanted to marry her, but the question was how to ask her? So after a week of telling her, “we need to talk,” I finally built up the courage to ask her over the phone. We love how it is easy to talk to each other. Keeping in mind she knew I wanted to talk We are able to talk endlessly about everything about something, I carried on a three hour thats happening in our lives, in addition to conversation that had nothing to do with being a sounding board or a supportive spouse. proposing, and it was only until she asked me This open communication has allowed our what I wanted to talk about that I said to her love and appreciation for one another grow I want to spend the rest of my life with you. and make our relationship stronger. to meet the family. I had yet to give her a ring or drop down on one knee. My plan materialized when I took her to Rockefeller Centre to see the Christmas tree – and that’s exactly where I was going to propose. I parked the car, hid the ring in my inside pocket and we started to walk towards the tree. Nikki is not the one to like crowds, and NYC just after Christmas is at the top of the list for crowds – so before we made it to the tree I had to change plans as I could see that this wasn’t going to be pleasant for her. So we got back in the car, and now with no plan I thought of a nice quiet place. I took her to Sunset Park in Brooklyn that has an amazing view of the NYC skyline. It was quiet, we walked the park, and when we reached the best view, I dropped on one knee and asked her again, “Will you be my wife?”

WEDDING STORY

With one of us being another country it wasn’t possible to do any events earlier which meant we had an engagement, prewedding, wedding and reception all in one week! Our wedding revolved around spending time with family and friends who traveled from near and far to be with us during the important time in our lives. Though it went by like a blur we were really happy with the time we were able to spend with everyone and have a wedding everyone enjoyed and got to be a part of.

Favourite Moment Our favourite moment was when we finished our fourth lavan and we were officially married. We were ecstatic to finally be husband and wife and start a new chapter in our lives. We were excited to see our big day – that we planned extensively – come together perfectly with the love and blessings of our family and friends around us.

The Attire Nikki: The wedding outfit was something I talked and planned about with my mother before I even thought about marriage! I

Some special things we offered our guests were a donation on behalf of them to the BC Cancer Society, a DJ brought in all the way from England and dessert bar to satisfy their sweet tooth!” wanted something unforgettable and something that followed my peacock-themed wedding. Working with Dave from Well Groomed, we were able to create a unique look for both of us, that also complemented one another. With a peacock feather-printed lehenga and peacock-coloured achkan we had a completely out of the box look that we loved! The lehenga was light-weight, so I was very comfortable during my wedding, which made me a very happy bride.

To go with my wedding outfit, my naniji (maternal grandmother) gifted me a real gold set that went perfectly with my look. For a spectacular outfit I needed special shoes, which were a peacock blue Gucci’s. For our reception, Dave created a beautiful deep purple gown covered in crystals for me, and Bhupinder bought a unique burgundy Hugo Boss tuxedo to complete our look. Bhupinder gifted me a pair of marvellous Jimmy Choo’s shoes that went perfectly with my gown. It was important that both of our outfits be classy, but unforgettable. Traditional outfits and colours were something we weren’t aiming for, but rather a look that defined our personalities and likes.

The Reception Our reception took place at the new magnificent Aria Banquet Hall. We went with a Hollywood-glam theme, from our outfits (a gown covered in crystals and a dapper tuxedo) to the black and white decor and the red carpet entrance. With the hall’s look, the decor and the lighting, the night was full of glitz, sparkle and enchant-

ment. It was a reception of fun, laughs, and all night long dancing – a great way to end our week-long wedding! Some special things we offered our guests were a donation on behalf of them to the BC Cancer Society, a DJ brought in all the way from England and dessert bar to satisfy their sweet tooth!

The Honeymoon Nikki: We spent our honeymoon in Maui, Hawaii, at the Fairmont Resort for eight days. We explored the island of Maui by taking a day trip on the road to Hana. This was a windy road that took all day to travel with hiking and sight-seeing and enjoying a poorly-packed picnic. We also toured a pineapple farm where we got to have the most delicious pineapples we ever tasted! The highlight was being

able to rent a new vehicle and cruise down the island, as Bhupinder loves his cars and driving and I love when he is excited! Most of all we relaxed, soaking up the sun and enjoying our time together.

What are your goals as a couple? We want to be happy and stable with our careers, wherever that may be. In the near future, we would like to work towards buying a house and starting our own family. One big goal that we have is that we would like to continue travelling especially going to Europe one summer and travelling to India to visit our family and Amritsar!

Biggest Challenges For us, the biggest challenge is finding time to spend with one another, as we are still in a long distance relationship. With the time difference, the demands of our jobs, and our huge families, it does make it difficult to plan out time to see one another. We try to take time out of our schedules to see each other once a month for a few days at a time. Bhupinder is able to work at home and as a teacher I have Christmas, spring

64 Traditions By DARPAN

break and national holidays, which make it possible for us to see each other as much as possible.

How long did you know each other before getting married? We had a whirlwind romance with a short dating period and a quick marriage. We had known each other for a little over a year before getting married. It started off with a few emails, to long phone calls with some back and forth visits to each other’s hometowns and love was inevitable. Though we knew distance would be an issue, it was something we were able to look past as we knew we were meant to be together and everything else would work out as long as we had each other.

How important is it to share interests and beliefs? Or do opposites attract? Nikki: We have opposite interests, and that is something we love about one another. With opposing interests we are able to learn and grow from one another. We know no two people are the same, and that’s okay,

but it is important to be okay with each other’s differences. Bhupinder loves his cars, whereas I have no knowledge about them. He is able to give me more in sight on his hobbies and interests and vice versa. Though our interests are different, we do have similar beliefs. For us it is important to have similar beliefs so that we are working towards the same things in life. We both have a strong belief in family and being integrated with our families. We also believe in honesty and trust with one another, and with such understanding we are able to work together as a unit.

What have you grown to appreciate about each other? Nikki: Something I appreciate about Bhupinder the most is his optimistic outlook. He really helps me see the positive in all situations no matter how dire the situation may be. I tend to dwell on the negatives and he is always there to show me that there is a silver lining to most situations, which I may at the time not see. I love how he is calming and understanding of what I need in the moments I don’t even know what I need. Also, his honesty and caring nature is something I appreciate very much. He not only cares about me, but his family and anyone around him. His caring nature makes him a very supportive partner.

Do you have any advice for other couples? Make time for another and don’t take each other for granted. Set aside time or plan an event for one another. It doesn’t have to be something lavish or expensive, just special time for the two of you to give each other undivided attention. Date nights have been something we both enjoy, as we try to plan something different to look forward to.

s the old playground song goes, first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage. But when? When love comes, when is the right time to get married? Is there an ideal age to do so? While definitive data is hard to come by for such an individual and emotional decision, marrying at any age comes with its own set of advantages, leaving it up to you to decide what age is right for you and your relationship. Getting married in your early twenties lets you grow and change together with your partner as a couple. While this may strengthen the bond you two have, it,s important to keep in mind that you may still have growing to do on your own which could come at the expense of your relationship. The challenges of marriage may become more difficult as you discover more about yourself and the person you married. Age may also factor into your decision to

get married if you,re a young student thinking of tying the knot. While education isn,t always synonymous with age, the stresses and financial burden of finishing school and finding employment can take a toll on a relationship. On the plus side, if you choose to wed at a young age and start a family soon after, you could find yourself an empty nester in your early 40,s – leaving you an abundance of time to connect as a couple while you still have the energy and means to do so. The pressure may mount as you increase in years, but the 30,s and beyond bring their own advantages to marriage – a sense of security in your career, a level of maturity that only age brings, and realistic goals for yourself and your future family. With age comes a shift in perspective; you,re wise to what,s important in your life and outsiders, opinions and expectations will have less of an influence on your actions or

your relationship. More couples are waiting to walk down the aisle until they feel successful in their careers and financially secure. While not necessarily ideal for everyone, delaying your nuptials can allow your relationship to take centre stage when the time is right instead of competing with career moves or money woes. As you continue to age, you,ve done what you want to do, you know who you are and you know what you,re looking for in the future. Marrying at a later age comes with a confidence that can only be found through the years. You can never be too old to get married and it may often be worth the wait! Unfortunately, for women who wish to have children, starting a family in your later years comes with age-related risks. Challenges may also arise for those who have established careers but wish to remain at home with their children through their maternity leave or years following. Age may then be an important factor of wedding planning if you have plans for a growing family in your future. While age doesn,t necessarily translate into time together, research has shown that couples who have dated for longer periods of time before tying the knot tend to have more satisfying relationships. Being a few years older may not be so bad if a longer courting period can have a positive effect on your marriage. But why wait, some might ask. If you know you,ve found the one at 20, 40, or 60, is your age as important as the strength of your relationship? Employment and Social Development Canada states that the current median age for a woman to get married in Canada is 29.1, with men a few years older at 31.1. These numbers have risen noticeably from the 1960,s when the average age to get married was 22 and 25, respectively. While the pressure for a wedding may be mounting, couples are waiting longer than ever to tie the knot. Your ideal age to say ‘I do, may be different than others – and that,s okay. Getting married sooner versus later depends on many circumstances, all highly individual to the couple making such an important decision. Age may be just a number, but marriage is much more than that.

ike any well-constructed building, a prosperous marriage needs to be built on a solid foundation. Without a strong base to support the weight of what might come, it is important to keep in mind that a relationship is fragile. A bluster of wind during a storm, an aggressive knock on the door, a careless mistake on a difficult day, and windows break, roofs collapse, surfaces get scratched. A relationship can be just as delicate when circumstances change or time moves forward; feelings are hurt, emotions are ignored, intentions are misunderstood. With a strong foundation, a well-bolstered building can weather a storm; a strongly-supported marriage can, too. With trust, respect, communication, commit-

ment and love as the supportive pillars, a great marriage can be built to last. Marriage is a public and permanent declaration that two people have chosen to spend their forever's together. It's not for everyone and it,s not always easy but understanding what it takes to make it great can ensure it is everlasting. A house or marriage can,t be build on a weak foundation. Solid pillars make for an unshakable structure as much as they make a relationship sturdy. Outside forces may rattle your relationship, but a strong foundation built on powerful pillars will prevent it from breaking. A marriage is only as strong as the foundation on which it was built.

Advice

1

R

TRUST [truhst]

Noun; reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.

Trust is not only about finding someone who will keep your secrets or remain faithful. Having confidence that the one you’ve chosen to spend your life with will always be the one you rely on no matter the issue provides a sense of comfort and security necessary for building a happy and healthy marriage. Trust is essential to an intimate relationship with your life partner. It is knowing that the one you marry will always be there to support you; trusting your spouse will accept you when you’re at your worst, celebrate you when you’ve done your best and believe in you when you doubt yourself most. Trust makes a marriage a safe place to be.

2

RESPECT [ri-spekt]

R

Noun; verb; esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person; to show regard or consideration for.

Mutual respect for each other and your relationship is essential to a satisfying marriage. It is about valuing the one you’ve chosen to spend your life with and ensuring they understand their importance in your life. Giving your spouse your undivided attention, listening to their needs and responding to their concerns demonstrates your consideration for their opinions even if they differ from yours. Respect allows you to accept your partner – and their point of view – wholeheartedly. Offering affirmation to your partner for who he or she is despite your differences creates a caring relationship; valuing one another and the decisions you make, both separately and together, shows just how important your partner is in your life. Mutual respect promotes equality in a relationship and allows both parties to be heard, understood and appreciated while building each other up instead of tearing each other down.

3

COMMUNICATION

[kuh-myoo-ni-key-shuh n]

R

Noun; the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs Communication must be open, honest and respectful. Good communication allows couples to safely share their private thoughts, to express their concerns, to talk with respect and listen with intention. Breakdowns in communication can cause unnecessary arguments and hurtful misunderstandings. A lack of communication is often at the root of many problems that arise within a relationship. Opening up to your partner – and listening to your partner – can be the difference between an adequate marriage and an enjoyable lifetime together. As time goes on, it’s all too easy to assume. It’s important not to take for granted you know what your spouse is thinking or they know what you’re going to say; asking questions, giving honest answers and responding with care will help hold a marriage together. Without effective communication, a marriage can crumble, and yet from it stems true friendship between two people who are able to openly express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

4

COMMITMENT [kuh-mit-muh nt]

R

Noun; a pledge or promise; obligation

Marriage is a commitment to one person for the rest of your lives. It is the vow to love one another and support one another through good times and bad. It is the words you promise in front of your closest friends and family on your wedding day, but it is also how you treat each other, how you work together and how you make your marriage a priority. The genuine act of being committed will see your marriage survive the tough times as you work through them instead of turning your back against them. By putting your relationship first, not just for the present but forever, your actions will allow your marriage to flourish. Life comes with challenges and, consequently, your marriage can, too. Commitment means the challenges are just cracks in the wall – and you’ll do anything to keep those walls from falling.

5

LOVE [luhv]

R

Noun; a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person It may seem obvious to profess love as a necessity for a great marriage as it’s most often the main reason couples get married. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the first things to be forgotten when times get tough or life gets busy. It’s easy to say ‘I love you’, but loving deliberately is more important than saying it aloud. Love is a passion for one another, propelling you to put your partner first. It is about valuing one another and embracing each other, both mentally and physically. Understanding your spouse’s love language – what makes them feel loved and how to show it – will allow you to love one another in the most supportive and strongest way possible. A signed contract makes a marriage, but love is what makes it meaningful.

TECH

BRIDES Some ideas for the 21st century wedding

Online wedding registry Getting gifts to start your new life together is one of the best parts of getting married, but as a busy bride, sometimes finding the time to go into a store to register is just not an option. Wedding registries can now be done online or even through apps such as WeddingScan. This app even allows you to pick different items from different stores without ever having to set foot there, while keeping track of what people have purchased for you ― making the thank you cards that much easier. For those expensive techy items you don’t want to buy yourself, Best Buy started a wedding registry on February 16 this year.

72 Traditions By DARPAN

Wedding website An alternative to the traditional wedding invitation is to create a wedding website. Instead of individually contacting your wedding guests about last minute changes, all the information they need to know is located in one place. The Knot offers free templates that can be used (or paid ones that offer more options), or apps such as the Appy Couple which allows you to have the phone app and corresponding website for only 35 dollars. For those who want a souvenir, some websites such as The Knot can create a dvd of your wedding website to keep for years to come.

Picture time Even though you may have already found the perfect wedding photographer, it is important not to forget about all the other wedding photos your guests will take. Using an app such as Wedding Party allows all the pictures to go into one place where they are easily accessible by you and everyone at the wedding. This means more memories for you ― and the best part is they’re free.

Say CHEESE Top Tips for Wedding Photography and Videography

Meet several photographers before you pick one.

Considering that this is the biggest day of your life, there are some important factors to consider when hiring a wedding photographer. When it comes down to capturing one of the biggest moments of your life, the photographer has to strike a perfect balance of being experienced, personable and yet easy to get along with. Remember, he/she will be in-charge of planning and shooting the photographs that will document this very special day for you. Keep in mind that if your family is comfortable with the photographer he/she would be able to make them smile or capture candid moments effortlessly.

76 Traditions By DARPAN

A Wedding photographers' fees varies depending on his/her skill and experience

Make sure to check out their portfolio before you book them for the big day. This will give you an idea whether they are right for the vision you have and if they’re personable to work with. The longer the photographer has been in business increases his capability and quality of work. Keep in mind that though you may be anxious to get the photos from the big day, editing is timeconsuming. The photographer is working hard to get you the photos in a timely manner, so don’t stress, the wait is worth it.

3

Discuss the nitty gritty

Make a “who-to-shoot” list so they know who you want more photos taken with. Tell them what your vision is for photos and what angles you are looking for. Wedding photography is a collaboration between you and the photographer. Keep in mind that the photographer is not aware of the relationship with all the uncles and aunties or the BFFs from high school, if you want certain shots with family and friends, make a list of the Who, What, When and Where so they can address them by their name to make it less awkward.

4

Trust the photographer

You hired them for a reason. Let them find the angles and poses to work with. Discuss pricing packages as it is cheaper to book an engagement and wedding shoot in one go versus separately. Choose a location that would highlight your outfit and make it stand out against the background, after all the focus should be on you and your future partner.

5

Bring a set of comfortable shoes for the photoshoot

If most of your photos will be head shots, take an extra set of flats to ease the pain of wearing high heels for the full length poses. Also, if you have booked an extensive shoot, spice it up by taking a change of clothes as well to dial down the looks you have planned. You can do a formal shoot and a low key one to give you a variety of looks in the photos. Maximize your shoot with your budget and if you want to incorporate props, don’t feel shy to make those suggestions.

6

Invite the photographer to all the rehearsals

This will give them the opportunity to get to know you and the rest of your wedding party, which helps with interactions during the photoshoot sessions. Also, it gives them the chance to see the locations the event will be in and will be able to plan for it properly.

7

Just relax!

Let them take charge of capturing your moments. The details have been discussed, the expectations are set ‒ now it’s time for you to relax and enjoy your big day. The more relaxed you are, the more fun the shoots will be.

Being a

Zen Bride Be A Zen Bride With These Four Simple Tips!

Take a little quiet time for yourself every day. Find a quiet corner of your home, or get outside to a neighbourhood park, sit down and take some deep breaths. It will soon become one of your favourite parts of the day and a time when your creativity and energy is restored for whatever is next on your plate!

ongratulations! You are in the midst of planning a beautiful day when you will start a new life with your love. It’s a magical time, but a busy one too – and we want to make sure you stay cool and collected through the process. To help you stay zen from the proposal to the altar, we’ve put together four tips for you! Socialize with your girlfriends – and make it clear that you don’t want to discuss anything wedding -related! Talk about what’s going on in your friends’ lives, take in a film or try a new restaurant – anything that will get your mind off of wedding favours and centrepieces (Avoid The Wedding Planner and My Best Friend’s Wedding). Take a little quiet time for yourself every day. Find a quiet corner of your home, or get outside to a neighbourhood park, sit down and take some deep breaths. You might find at first that being alone makes the thoughts in your head get louder. Sitting still might make you feel antsy. The whole situation may feel forced – but do this daily. Eventually those thoughts will soften or drift away, and you will have more stamina to sit. It will soon become one of your favourite parts of the day and a time when your creativity and energy is restored for whatever is next on your plate!

Get together with your fiancé for something other than wedding planning. It can be really easy to go through your checklist of to-do’s every time you hang out, but make it a point to take some time off and just enjoy being a couple. Neither of you are allowed to say a word about the wedding, but you can still dream about your life together. This will also put it in perspective that your wedding is just one day, and what you are really celebrating is a life-long commitment to love and honour each other. Maintain an exercise regime – that increases your energy and gives you a break from too much wedding focus. Add some fun by throwing in some dance classes or Zumba. Grab a girlfriend or do it alone, whatever suits you best. The point is to get your heart pumping and all those feelgood hormones flowing through your body! Alongside this is eating well and staying hydrated. Choose foods that satisfy your appetite but keep you feeling light and energetic. Focus on being your healthiest you and the stress will melt away! Whether you are planning a big weddingpalooza or a simple affair, we urge you to try out these tips, so that your “I do” comes out like an easy sigh and all you are thinking about is marrying the love of your life.

Advice

Tying the Knot With Families By Shanel Khaliq

A good way to get to know the other family is to always manage the preparations of the wedding together and keep the other party in the loop as much as possible. In doing so, there can be a lot of exchange of views on a variety of things, from the colour of your dress to the selection of the venue.

80 Traditions By DARPAN

W

hether you choose the partner of your dreams yourself or whether you prefer to do it the traditional way, getting married surely entails new adventures. Getting hitched gets the adrenaline going for most people, and the preparations start. Especially if you are having a traditional Indian style wedding, the preparations are likely to start quite a while before the event. In so much of the hullabaloo around the “wedding,” most people overlook the important aspect of trying to understand each other’s family. You have your whole life in front of you to do that, so why now? Perhaps because the beginning of the marriage and the time before that is when expectations are the highest, and it is also the time when disappointment or disagreement can impact quickly. It is important to work on both knowing your partner and their families as you step on this new endeavour.

A good way to get to know the other family is to always manage the preparations of the wedding together and keep the other party in the loop as much as possible. In doing so, there can be a lot of exchange of views on a variety of things, from the colour of your dress to the selection of the venue. This will help reveal how assertive or passive each person is, and it will also give you a sense of accommodating variant point of views at a very early stage. However, it is also important for both the guy and the girl to know and respect each other’s boundaries. So before you start getting negative vibes from the other side, try to be preemptive and look at the situation objectively. If you feel your parents are being more intrusive or assertive than they should be, then be the first one to try and correct the situation on your own. In most families, this is the time when everyone is at their best and that can sometimes delude the other party, particularly the bride-to-be. If your family is fairly conservative, then be vocal about that and try and discuss important issues often, but in a light-hearted and candid manner. Many a times, issues are left open ended and unaddressed when the decision on getting married is finalized. This is the time, before your wedding, to discuss those things and communicate them with your parents as well. Both the bride and the groom-to-be are also more comfortable with each other now as the most important step of getting married has been finalized. So take this opportunity to try to talk more often on how you see gender roles and the management of a family in detail. This will help the bride to settle in better and also will keep her parents aware of what they are signing up for. Giving gifts is always the best way to increase goodwill among two parties. The exchange of gifts is in any case almost essential in Indian weddings. However make sure that your gifts are more thoughtful than pompous. Remember that this family is going to be a part of yours from now on, so instead of presenting a false image, try to put in as much thought and effort in selecting a gift that develops warmth at the receiving end. It can be harder to communicate to the elders of the family, so try your luck with the siblings. Try and plan excursions with his or her siblings and closest friends in order to get to know them better. This will give you a chance to spend more time with them and learn more about how things work in their family. Siblings, especially if younger, tend to be more candid and open than the parents, so developing a rapport with them will help you learn the most valuable things. But the most important thing is to start with an open mind and to respect each other’s family foremost. Respect is essential, since it will not only help develop better understanding but will also give you a special place in the heart of your spouse-to-be.

The year 2015 has ushered in a variety of trends such as pastel colours for decor and outfits, and simplicity with centrepieces.

CHECKLIST By Roshini Sakhrani

T

he year 2015 has ushered in a variety of trends such as pastel colours for decor and outfits, and simplicity with centrepieces. Brides are experimenting with their outfits of choice and spicing it up with modern cuts, while playing it down by highlighting fabrics instead of

embroidery-laden lehengas. This year is seeing a trend of less being more with decor, less fondantladen cakes, and smaller flower-based centrepieces, yet still accentuating detail. Whether your goal is an intimate gathering for the big day or the traditional big fat Indian wedding, the royalesque-inspired theme this year will have all the guests talking about your event for years to come.

The colour Traditional Indian weddings are adorned by the colours red and gold, however, this year couples are opting for a more softer colour palette. Expect to see more pastel-laden decor as they can be easily paired with bolder colours. This year we’re seeing peach, light pinks, rustic gold, and the pantone colour of the year, Marsala, making an appearance. Photo: Amrit Photography

The JEWELLERY If your look is all about royalty, the maatha-paati is a great headpiece accessory whether its studded with jewels or motif-designed. The Pakistani-style maang tikka, also know as a baal tikka, is the beautiful chandelier hairpiece that is arranged off-center. It always is a little askew but worn alone or combined with a center-part maang tikka, and is always on point. Traditionally, peacocks are a symbol of elegance and beauty. In the coming year, we will be seeing wedding jewellery with peacock motifs adorning brides.

< The MAKEUP The ideal look right now is to go au naturel. Glowing skin blended with a kiss of blush is great for a simple bridal look — if that’s what you’re going for. Go for a natural-based makeup that is one shade darker than your skin tone, this will prevent you from looking too pasty. For the lips, you can make them pop with a vibrate red or play it down with a natural nude. Make sure you find a perfectly-paired lipliner for longer wear or to amplify the shape of your lips. The EMROIDERY The Blooms Peonies, hydrangeas, dahlias and English roses are accentuating dinner tables with a touch of colour. They’re modern and versatile if you’re planning a casual affair or traditional event. If you’re going for an elegant look, centre pieces featuring white peonies in a silver bowl creates a classic royal ambiance. Photo: calierose.com

Go vintage. Embroidery is classic and takes your dress to another level, whether it’s heavily-embroidered with sequins and thread work or showcases the fabrics of your choice. Lighter fabrics such as georgette and crepe are trending for summertime affairs, and heavier fabrics such as silks for evening events. Instead go for classier options in richer hues with intricate detailing. Let the fabric do all the talking with an elegant rather than over-the-top design. Brides are going in for interesting non-traditional designs — exploring their individuality for the big day. The cuts or traditional designs of the outfit itself has been altered drastically to individual preferences. No longer do the lehengas reign supreme for the bridal attire. Fashion designers are inspired by bridal wear in pastel colours for this year — suiting the warm temperatures in India. The deep reds, pinks, and violets have transitioned to shades of whites and beiges.

PLANNING

The LIGHTING The VENUE British-inspired themes such as the affair of William and Kate are making their way into Indian weddings this year. From peacock adornments symbolizing royalty and elegance, to vintage venues such as the Pacific Ballroom at the Fairmont Vancouver, the trend this year is nothing short of royalesque. Jewel tones such as emerald, ruby red, sapphire blue, and amethyst have been traditionally associated with royalty. These rich colours can be paired with subtle shimmer elements to create a luxurious ambiance. Gold rimmed dishes and crystal glasses will have your guests feel they’re dining with the king and queen.

Since Indian weddings are spread out over a couple of days, one of the events is sure to be indoors during the evening. For gatherings such as receptions and family dinners, candles are popular adornments on tables or as centrepieces. The soft light from candles offer a vintage and intimate touch for a wedding that may host over a hundred guests. Photo: Amrit Photography

Photo: Fairmont Vancouver

The CAKE The BUBBLY The rise of the champagne tower is making a comeback for receptions and other formal events this year. For casual affairs, couples can opt for a lively twist and add fruit purees to concoct a signature cocktail for those summery weddings. Opt for a lighter and vibrant selection of fruit -based drinks to complement the season. Photo: Amrit Photography

Lots of couples aren’t too keen on the all-fondant cakes and are opting for buttercream or naked cakes revealing the good stuff inside. For summertime weddings, berries can be layered in the cake for a sweet and tart combination. Ombre wedding cakes are trending this year and can be formal or whimsical depending on your taste. Whether you’re drawn to saturated hues or pastels, the possibilities for colours are endless. Monogrammed wedding cakes provide a royal touch to the big day. Photo: Deo Studios

Scroll Card Centuries ago, there was a time where whenever the royal family was about to visit a place, there was a person who used to introduce them by reading a scroll. Though times have changed and we no longer address people in that manner, we have now brought back those days by sending out invitations that resemble the past. Today, as a sign of sheer luxury, scroll cards are trending as they connect directly to our past. The options are endless and you can get the cards in a customized box or even in perfectly-sized envelopes. Rolled up in a perfect scroll and tied with a satin ribbon, your invitation radiates grandeur.

Velvet or Satin Cards Recently, couples are finding elegance in velvet or satin-covered cards. Popular colours for the materials include maroon, turquoise and gold.

I

nvitations are a significant part of the planning process, and will be the first impression your relatives will have commemorating the beginning of your married life. Receiving a paper invitation in the mail signifies that an important event is about to take place.

Setting the tone of the affair is equally important and the invite should convey just that. You want your guests to know whether they’re attending a black-tie event, or a traditional Indian affair. If you’re working with a designer, select something that says a little about you and your partner to provide a personal touch to the invitation. Read on to find out what’s trending this year and where couples are finding their inspiration.

Cards with a Box/Bag A ravishing way to invite your guests would be to send a box or bag card. It can be composed of paper or cloth highlighting elegant designs or jewels of your choice. Instead of an envelope, each card is packed neatly with a personalized box which can contain treats or sweets.

Celebrate With

Cupcakes! T

he Cupcakes philosophy is that “every day is a celebration!” Renowned for their freshly-baked, whimsical cupcakes and cakes, this popular retro-styled bakery has certainly become the go-to place for those wanting to commemorate a milestone with something sweet or just because. “We cater to a wide range of celebrations each and every day” says the owner and operator, Gurveen Johal. So whether it’s a traditional birthday cake you’re looking for or a custom-made cupcake tier for a special event, you are guaranteed a beautifully-designed, mouth-watering product – no matter what your budget is. “I always work to ensure my customers get the best possible package fitting their budget”. Gurveen also offers a number of special discounts and lots of options for different products and flavours. For example, after six cupcakes, there is no tax, and there is a discounted price if you order 100 cupcakes or more. It’s no surprise then that Cupcakes bakery is an extremely popular choice for weddings. The

process is also very straightforward: bridesto-be can book a wedding consultation with Gurveen to decide on the design and flavour of their choice. For customers who haven’t yet tried all their flavours, like the delectable coconut cake or their bestselling red velvet, can always get a mini-pre pack to sample. These are available in store and offer one of all the flavours. Besides wedding cakes, Cupcakes also offers brides and grooms-tobe options for an array of wedding-related events such as bridal showers, engagement parties, proposals or stagettes. “We also offer options for sagan cards, wedding favours, sagan trays, dessert bars and anything else you can think of!” says Gurveen. “There are endless possibilities at Cupcakes if you are looking for something unique and sweet for your wedding.” Besides their creative edible creations, what truly sets Cupcakes apart is the fact that everything is baked fresh daily, using preservative-free, basic ingredients. “We are

much different from a home-based business, it is a corporate brand, so we really hold ourselves to the best standards,” says Gurveen. She adds that they are also more than happy to accommodate people’s food restrictions. Be it gluten-free or eggless, customers can always custom-order these options. Gurveen, who was raised in a business family, shares that the best part of her job at Cupcakes is being a part of her customer’s celebrations and being able to share memorable moments with them. “We get to be a part of birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, rakhi, christenings, weddings, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and so on. It’s never a dull day at work.” Her favourite celebration to be a part of is a gender reveal. When you cut the cake, it is either pink or blue inside, revealing the baby’s gender. “We have delivered this news to so many excited couples and their families! It really is a blessing. It’s so exciting!” She adds that some people also choose to go with cupcakes with the appropriate icing. So whether you’re celebrating a significant milestone like your big day or just a regular Friday night, make it extra-special with something sweet from Cupcakes.

P

lanning to make a bombastic entry to your wedding reception? Plan ahead and plan well. The surreal moments when you walk up the altar (or to the mandap) will stay with you for a long time, and you definitely want everything to be perfect. Choosing the right transportation is often a neglected aspect of wedding planning, as a bride’s energy is mostly consumed planning for the dress, makeup and venue. But remember, that is the moment when all eyes are going to be on you and you would not want to settle for anything less than the best. Limos have for a while been in the market as a reliable and chic mode of wedding transportation. They continue to be the most popular choice in Canada

and the reasons are obvious. A large number of companies are renting these cars and they come in all shapes and varieties, ranging from the stretch limo to the Hummer Limousine. They help accommodate more people, so whether you want to enter with all your best men or bring your entire extended family with you, these will definitely do the job. A wide range of rental companies in the market also means you can get better deals and can save some bucks in this part of the wedding. If you have a large guest list and a lot of people are coming to your wedding from out of town, the best choice would be to get a mini bus or a van that could accompany you and transport all your guests. This way you can be remembered

as the best host and all your friends can be there to see you make your grand entrance. However if you think limousines are overdone and you simply want to enter in a contemporary yet catchy manner, the Mercedes S class would be a good option. This will save you a lot of trouble and you will still end up looking sophisticated. They might not be extremely exquisite or unique for a wedding entrance, but if you are someone who likes to keep things simple and classy; this should definitely be your pick. Dolis have become a fad in recent years and are being used in India and Pakistan as well for a traditional yet magnificent entrance to the reception. However, it is important to work out the logistics for this choice earlier, as you might not have as many companies offering this service. WHAT YOUR

Diamond CUT:

Princess

You like being treated like royalty – but then again, which lady doesn’t? This setting evokes traditional qualities with a little something extra. The fourpronged setting draws attention to the diamond itself and reflects a bride-to-be’s sensibility and modernity. Kendra Wilkinson was given a 2.25-carat princess cut ring with a triple-split shank giving it a vintage look.

By Roshini Sakhrani

W

hen it comes down to the rock on your finger, your style and preference of diamond cut, setting, colour and stone says a lot about your personality. Love is unique and rare,

and the ring a woman wears on her finger is a symbolism of exactly that.

Glamourous The emerald cut diamond has fewer facets revealing any flaws that the diamond may have. If you rock this cut, you’re confident and enjoy the thrill of taking risks. This retro setting features a unique look that showcases timeless beauty. Eva Longoria’s emerald-cut white diamond is set in a white gold band. The 5-carat ring encompasses a whopping 249 diamonds and is engraved with [now ex husband’s] name, Tony Parker. Beyonce also has an emerald-cut engagement ring set with an 18-carat diamond, reportedly a whopping $5 million.

116 Traditions By DARPAN

If your man took the plunge in selecting a ring for you, did he choose the right one that suits your personality? Though these ring attributes may sound superficial, society’s views on engagement rings are nothing short of that. Take a look and see what your ring says about you.

117 HALO Setting:

Angelic

The halo setting elicits your angelic qualities and love for the limelight. You work hard in everything you do to shine bright like a diamond. Glitz and glamour is your thing, you’re down-to-earth and soft at heart. The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting was given a 2.5 carat engagement ring with a diamond set band.

Round Solitaire:

Traditional

You were born to stand out! A round-cut diamond is one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. Women who are drawn to this setting are classic and traditional at heart and know a good thing when they see it. The multifaceted rock shines bright like no other and is elegant for a minimalist’s personality. Shilpa Shetty has a 20-carat engagement ring adorning her finger; other B-town celebrities like Sania Mirza and Genelia D’souza also rock the classic solitaire.

PEAR Shaped:

romantic A pear-shaped ring is an ideal one for the gentle-natured romantic bride. You’re the type of woman that’s not afraid to have it your way. The symmetrical shape reflects your need for balance in life and in relationships. The tear drop diamond evokes classic demeanour and vintage appeal. A pear-shaped diamond adorns Katherine Heigl’s engagement ring set in a micro pave halo on a French set diamond band.

Coloured Gem:

One of a kind You are a non-traditional woman that likes to keep people on their toes. Your artistic qualities radiate your inner beauty and unique perspective on life. Why blend in when you’re born to stand out? You take great pride in your beliefs and independence. Aishwarya Rai’s beautiful ring is set with sapphire stone, as is Penelope Cruz’s. Vidya Balan is a little bit more unique, she wears an ethnic gold ring embellished with a red stone that showcases her strong ties to her culture.

Party Ideas BY TARANA RANA

Planning a bachelorette party without the usual barhopping or night at the club? Here are a few ideas for some memorable and unique girl-time that everyone is sure to love!

Get Pampered

1

A day of pampering is always a good idea. If you’re seeking rest, pampering, care and beauty, head to Spa Utopia in Langley, North Vancouver or at the Pan Pacific Hotel. From massage therapies and spa treatments to body care and salon and beauty services – they have it all. If you’re looking for something more classic, why not have a spa party? Spa Utopia’s Picture Perfect Bridal Party package will ensure that ‘spa day with the girls’ is extra special. If you’re feeling stressed, or need a pick me up, drop-in for a 20 minute massage at their new concept store, Body & Salt, located at Guildford Mall...you’ll be glad you did!

2

Have a Slumber Party

3

Do a Wine Tasting Wine tasting is a fun, sophisticated way to get a buzz and feel cultured at the same time. Vancouver Wine Tours offers wine tasting at five award-winning wineries in the Fraser Valley. You can also opt for a decadent lunch afterwards at the Bacchus Bistro. Or if you prefer not to stray too far from Vancouver, head out to the Salt Tasting Room in Gastown, where you can pair wines with artisanal cheese and charcuterie.

A classic way to enjoy some girl time, hosting a classy slumber party is a laidback and memorable way to spend an evening. Have it at home or check into a suite at a hotel of your choice. Watch movies, sip cocktails, gossip and have a great night in! Just be sure to stock up on goodies (Thierry is a good place for snacks of the chocolate variety). To make things more exciting, consider hiring a physic or a tarot card reader to read your fortunes.

Go for Afternoon Tea

Another girl-time classic, afternoon or high tea is top on the list if you’re looking for a sophisticated time out. (And not to mention, some delectable treats!) More popular than ever, there are some great places to choose from. Fairmont Vancouver’s tea service remains a popular choice. Patisserie Fur Elise in Yaletown is another great option, with its yummy treats and fairy talelike ambience. Finally, another place to check out is the Neverland Tea Salon in Kitsilano, where you have the option of booking a private party.

Hit the Slots You don’t have to fly to Vegas to hit the slot machines. Vancouver has a couple of casinos that should do the trick. You could either head to the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond or the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver in Coquitlam for a girls gambling night. Both have great restaurants and shows to check out once you’re done playing the tables. If you want to go all out, you could decide on a theme and dress accordingly! (James Bond anyone?)

Have an Adventure

For a bachelorette party to remember, why not book a boat cruise? Golden Eagle Charters offers a number of options for bachelorette parties. Sail around Vancouver for a day of sightseeing and champagne with your girls. S

amer Khouzami has redefined the beauty industry with his creative and impressive skills. He is known around the world as the master makeup artist or the king of contouring. His makeup transformations are inspirational to many artists across the globe. The talented and

famous makeup artist visited Vancouver last year as part of his Ultimate Beauty Tour 2014, where he exclusively collaborated with local makeup artists Girlfriendz Studio 7 (Mindy Bansal and Ina Mander). Throughout the tour, he conducted makeup workshops in various parts of the world, namely Bahrain, Brazil, Holland, Kuwait, Ecuador and America, among many others.

Interview by Kanika Sasan

Beauty 129

MASTER OF MAKEUP How was your experience in Vancouver?

It was my first time, but definitely not the last. It has been a really amazing experience to be in Vancouver and discover this amazing city, and meet all the beauty lovers coming from all over Canada.

Where do you get your inspiration from to create the magic that you do on faces? My inspiration is really strange, because I get inspired from different stuff – not really related to makeup. I barely see makeup looks for inspiration, because I see that it makes my thinking narrow – I start thinking of how I would make this look in a different way. I don’t like that because it doesn’t tell me to create – so I start coping instead of creating. So usually my inspiration is something totally different and away from makeup. Maybe a painting may get me inspired, nice music will make me inspired, any nice vision of nature, sea…anything. If I am walking on the street and I see a woman just dressed up in a crazy way, maybe she’ll inspire me to create something. So I never get inspired from makeup looks. I am always thinking about makeup. Wherever I go, even if I am at home just staring at the wall, I am colouring the wall in my imagination, and this is how I get inspired.

No, never. It’s not a monotone, you cannot copy paste. For me, the face is a canvas and you are painting a canvas. Every canvas is totally different from the other. For me maybe, one sign or one feature of the face that is very important in makeup, and even for any woman to focus on, is her eyebrows. Just by focussing on your eyebrows, your whole face will change. As per the product, there is a very wide range of products and

What is your piece of advice for makeup artists to sustain in the industry? First of all, never stop learning. This is an ongoing career, and everyday there is something new. There are really good makeup artists out there, and they are all competing. If you really want to be known, have a mark, you really need to work on yourself – and this is an art, so you need to do it with passion. It’s not a business; don’t take makeup as a business. Definitely it will be one day; once you are really known, you are good at your work, you will reach there. But don’t start focussing on your makeup as it’s your business, then you will lose your creativity and you won’t be inspired and you won’t aspire anymore. So keep the art in the makeup. For me, it’s not only makeup itself that will make you a successful person, because you need to have the mind of a businessman as well. It’s your image that you are building. So for all makeup artists, its very good for you to really do well on your makeup skills, and also your business skills – how to market yourself, how to market your image, your brand. All of this will make people love and trust you, and then you will have a successful business.

F

lawless beauty is something we as women dream of embodying on our wedding day. Our handpicked selection of products for hair and makeup complements this year’s pantone colour of the year, Marsala – a naturally robust and earthy winered colour, one that complements Indian brides stunningly.. The impactful, full-bodied qualities of Marsala make for an elegant, grounded statement colour when used on its own or as a strong accent to many other colours like gold. Bold and experimental, brides are getting more glamorous and fabulous with big, sexy, doll eyes. While the cat-eye look is trending, it’s not only about using just a black liner, but adding a bit of shading as well. Brides are loving shades of rust

and copper brown for the smokey look. These colours go well with jewel tones, whether they are adorned in couture clothes or gold and diamond jewellery. This year, the focus is definitely on the eyes and not so much on the lips. Red is so last year for lipsticks because it’s not a colour that suits everyone. Be it bold matte lip pens or stains with a softer, youthful hues like peaches and corals are always preferred. There are highlighters or glow getters for cheeks, and to keep the complete look intact, a water and humidity-proof make-up fixer is just what you need. Brides are looking for flawlesslooking skin without overdoing it on the makeup. Keep in mind that, ‘Fresh’ is the keyword this year and less is always more.

edding planning can be a stressful period of time in a bride’s life and can cause

voluminous hair to look limp. While preparing for the wedding, it’s important to create a regimen to transform dull hair into luscious tresses for the big day. Even if you’re not planning any drastic changes to your locks, getting them in top condition ahead of the special day is as important as getting the style right. Using blowdryers and hair tools, such as curling irons and straighteners can damage

quickly.

Implementing

products into your routine that protect against heat can minimize damage to your hair.

his year, Traditions is featuring celebrity Henna artist, Ash Kumar, who is world-renowned for his craft. Ash Kumar Group of Companies have developed the darkest henna in the world along with the smooth paste and precision

applicator. His vision is to empower artists with tools to deliver an elevated beauty experience all year round.

Bespoke Henna

Invest in a professional

As your wedding represents your style and personality, so should your henna. Brides can ask their artist to create a unique or custom design just for them.

Your henna will wear right through to your honeymoon in every single picture. Take the time to choose your henna artist and take a look at their portfolio and the designs they are able to accommodate.

Less is more Sometimes simple and chic is more elegant. Opt out of “traditional” and create a design that is more minimalistic - sometimes the simplest design is the most beautiful.

Henna as an accessory Think of your henna as an accessory which complements your attire. Make sure your henna accents your outfit and enhances your overall look. Choose jewellery based on the amount of henna you are planning on having, so that you don’t overdo it on both.

Today’s brides are asking questions like: Do you have any training in henna? Which henna do you use? Investing a little more and getting a henna professional is really priceless. Don’t leave it until the last minute. Professional artists start getting booked up a year in advance, prepare for your big day by selecting the right artist for you ahead of time.

Bridal Henna Shoots Capture the beauty of your henna and this day with a “bridal henna photo shoot”.

days there are many advantages to orthodontic treatment that didn’t exist in years past. You don’t have to worry about spending years wearing braces; as techniques have come a long way in dental care. Options such as clear braces and Invisalign® are gentler and more effective, with approaches that work well for adult teeth. Most often, the limiting factor for orthodontic treatment is time. To plan effectively, treatment should commence six to 24 months in advance of your special day, giving plenty of time to perfect a smile. The duration of the orthodontic treatment vastly depends upon the severity of the misalignment. If you have less time, don’t panic, braces can be fit and we can progress the treatment as far as possible in the time available. Even if you have not fully completed your treatment, we can remove your braces temporarily for your wedding. It’s a win-win situation. When your special day arrives, you want to be able to smile with confidence,

To help you prepare for your big day, here is a quick reference: 6-24 months prior to your wedding: Contact Aura Orthodontics for a FREE consultation. We’ll take the time to explain all the treatment options available to you and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Invisalign® advantages: • • • • •

Clear, Invisible Removable No rough surfaces Less emergencies Fewer appointments

Remember, braces or Invisalign® can be temporarily removed for your big day and continued afterwards.

1-2 months to go: Explore whitening options, and a cleaning from your dentist.

On your big day: Smile to your hearts content! capturing those special memories that will last a lifetime. Before your wedding day, allow Aura Orthodontics the opportunity to help you get the smile that you’ve always dreamed of!

Fitness Learn a few fitness and nutrition tips that can get you in shape before your special day arrives.

Fitness

Regime For Brides-to-be By Bindi Bains Mackoruk

S

o your big day is six months away and you need to get in shape. Well, as much as I am a firm believer that fitness and health cannot be a temporary fad, I also believe that you can improve your body and overall health drastically over a six month period. So, I

am going to share with you some fitness and nutrition tips that can help you meet your goals before your special day arrives.

1

Change your eating habits

A lean healthy body is achieved primarily from good nutrition. About 80 per cent, if not more, of weight loss and muscle gain comes from your diet. Eating four to six times a day can help boost your metabolism, which in turn, results in weight loss. Of these meals, three can be proper meals, with the rest being snacks. Either way, the portions of each meal should be fairly small and well-balanced in protein, complex carbohydrates, fibrous carbohydrates (veggies) and good fats. This can vary from person to person depending on the body type. A few simple ways to start good eating habits

Bindi Bains Mackoruk is a well-known fitness expert, bodybuilder and personal trainer

include cutting down your intake of sugar, salt and foods high in saturated fat and starchy carbs. Clean out your cupboard, start reading food nutrition labels when purchasing your groceries, cook meals at home instead of going out to eat, and choose fresh, wholesome foods over processed ones. Drink plenty of water. Water has many benefits; and one very important one is that it flushes toxins out of your body. Toxins being released from your body can result in weight loss. Eliminate or at least cut down your intake of alcohol. Alcohol has no nutritional value and it can actually hinder fat loss and the gain of lean muscle mass.

Fitness

Getting in shape can be different for every body type. What I have shared is only a general list of ideas that can help the average individual. If, as a bride you follow any of the above recommendations, you will definitely see changes in your body/health, but everyone’s results may vary.

2

Get into a fitness routine

Getting into a fitness routine might mean joining a local gym or even working out at home. Whatever the choice, the main thing is that you do a combination of strength training and cardio. Many people believe that lifting weights automatically makes you ‘bulky’, but this is definitely not the case. In fact, strength training can lead to extreme weight loss and a very lean physique. If you are new to fitness/working out, I recommend hiring a personal trainer to guide you properly. Working out two to three times a week can help with maintenance, but to see results, I recommend four to five times a week. If you are not a ‘gym type’ of person, then look into a local bootcamp or another fitness class in your area that you can attend on a regular basis. Fasted cardio is also a great way to burn fat. Doing low intensity, long duration (30-45 mins) cardio on an empty stomach before your first meal can help burn excessive fat calories and helps in the conditioning of your physique.

146 Traditions By DARPAN

3

Take good supplements

Although a good diet can provide much of what you need in the way of nutrients, it is difficult to obtain all necessary vitamins and minerals from food alone. I recommend the intake of a good multivitamin. Deficiency of certain vitamins or minerals can lead to weight gain and ailment. Since there are many different multivitamins on the market, it is important that you get the right one for you. I believe that taking vitamins in a liquid form is much more beneficial than pills, as pills can often pass through your body before being fully absorbed. There are many ‘fat-burners’ on the market, so if you do choose to take one, make sure it is as natural as possible, as many supplements contain fillers, synthetics and stimulants that may not be suitable for you. Keep in mind, fat-burners can only speed up weight loss if taken while on an exercise program and a healthy diet, not simply on their own. If you are actively working out, taking a natural pre-workout supplement and amino acids can help with boosting energy and recovery after your training. Talk to a professional before taking any new supplements so that you are fully aware of their benefits and any side effects.

DIVA’NI 150 Traditions By DARPAN

Fashion 151

Diva’ni begins with you… Your innermost feelings, wants and desires to break free. Yash Raj Films (YRF)’s Bollywood-inspired fashion label, Diva’ni, in partnership with Delhi-based Karol Bagh Saree House (KBSH), a manufacturer and retailer of Indian ethnic wear, is all about the cinematic celebration of a diva – someone who is liberated from shackles of conformity and everyday expectations.

It is your aura, your charm, your beauty, and your inner Diva.

153

Diva’ni draws its vision from the late Yash Chopra, who put as much effort into draping his heroines, as he did in painting beautiful visual imageries on reel. India’s first cinema-inspired fashion brand is a reflection of the rich legacy and heritage associated with YRF and KBSH, which celebrates the glitz, glamour and drama that reverberates from the age-old union of fashion and cinema. “Diva’ni is a marriage between cinema and fashion,” said Sanya Dhir, brand director at KBSH. Diva’ni since its inception has been Diva’nism as its philosophy. It is your aura, your charm, your beauty, and your

inner Diva. Diva’ni is freedom, inspired by fashion, film and femininity. It’s is all about the cinematic you – one who is unreal and unabashedly romantic. And if you think it sounds romantic and cinematic, then the brand has hit the right note – as that’s the essence of Diva’ni. The DNA of the brand is cinema and the celebration of women. Dedicated to women, Diva’ni is an aspirational brand with a focus on handmade and hand-woven products at affordable prices. Go ahead, become the girl, woman, the stunning Diva, and every other beauty that lives inside you.

How To

Dress Man Y your

our wedding is months to mere weeks away, and you do not have a clue what to dress your man in. The wedding dress is purchased and fitted, the caterers are paid in full, and your DJ has a complete playlist for the reception of a lifetime. The question still lingers, and you ask yourself the following question: “What will my man be wearing?” This season, the key is to move away from conformity. These days, men want to show off, and then celebrate their individuality. Traditions wedding magazine has you covered, and offers you little tips and tricks on how to dress your man. Start off small; let us think about socks. Coloured socks are hot right now. To avoid getting caught up in the “something old, something new” bit, make your man wear blue socks. His groomsmen, in turn, can sport varying shades of blue, too, so they will all match to a certain degree. Minor accessories are covered, so let us move on to the main event. When it comes to the Sherwani, the modern groom has many options available to him. The Sherwani may be a traditional dress for an Indian groom, but allow your man to express himself. Red and black colour combinations are popular right now, as are grey and gold. This year, kurta designs will be a major

brand to take a closer look at as far as Sherwanis are concerned. They are taking advantage of newer, lighter fabrics that will keep a groom cool while he is walking down the aisle this spring. Kurta colour combinations are whimsical; some colours that stand out are burnt orange, light cream, merlot, and light yellow. If you are getting married soon, it is not too late to choose a beautiful Sherwani with your future mate. In 2015, we are seeing less beads and jewels, and more intricate patterns on fabrics. Get away from the usual wedding suit and try your hand at choosing a tailored suit. Gucci released a nautical-inspired menswear collection for spring 2015. Even if you have not considered a beach wedding, your husband-to-be may look stunning in a navy coloured suit. If the suit is a blue hue, a red tuxedo shirt with a white striped tie can certainly complete the outfit. Essentially, this assures that your man will look more like a dreamy officer, rather than a gentleman. It is suggested to not take the nautical theme too far; have him wear black or brown shoes from J. Crew, and not boat shoes. He will not be fishing up and down the docks after the reception. Tan wedding suits are also en vogue this season. By wearing a suit as opposed to, a tuxedo, this tells your guests that you

and your man are relaxed about your upcoming nuptials. Allow the light tan to medium brown suit to be the blank canvas of your husband’s dress code; pair the suit with a highly-patterned dress shirt, and a solid tie. Tie colours should match a colour shade in the shirt. If you are a couple that is really loose, and just loves the idea of being in love rather than being wrapped-up in the hustle and bustle of the big day, then your man can even avoid the tie. Have you considered this option? He will feel more comfortable in the long run anyway. On the contrary, if you and your man are traditionalists, you might want to take the traditional Englishman route. Tweed suits with matching vests are highly popular. We are thinking lighter colours to be best for this tight buttoned look, such as periwinkle, cream, or even powder blue. As mentioned above, if you are a couple that likes to go against the grain, even a little bit, here is what to do: Attempt to match a silk neck scarf to the colour of the suit, and have that be his tie substitute. You are still keeping with a traditional look, but adding personality to your big day. How will your man dress on your big day? Allow your husband to express himself, and you will be golden. The rest is a piece of (wedding) cake.

f you are picturing a honeymoon filled with romantic walks on the beach, white sands and delicious seafood, then Boracay in Philippines is your kind of place. Home to over 7,000 islands, the Philippines is a beach enthusiast’s dream destination. The bountiful islands are geographically

located off of the mainland of Southeast Asia and have historically taken on Spanish and American influences.

Honeymoon

The beaches and liveliness of Boracay – a small island in Philippines, has gained international recognition, and is the perfect honeymoon destination. It is about an hour flight away from the capital Manila and is filled with endless sightseeing, accommodation and restaurants. The currency used in the Philippines is the Philippine peso (PhP) and are denominated through 20s, 50s, 100s, 500s, and 1000s. As a safety precaution, you should carry some cash in a secure pack, as it is common to find a few ATMs out of funds or offline. There are also exchange centers on the island, however not every location offers the same exchange rates. Motorized tricycles will be your primary

It is helpful to pack a small handkerchief or scarf to bypass these exhausts. The island of Boracay is split up into three sections: Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3. You will find the finest sands in Station 1, as well as plenty of space and time for rest and relaxation. Station 2 is the epicenter of the island’s life with the D’Mall filled with must-see souvenir shops, as well as an array of dining options. It is also notorious for its nightlife scene. Station 3 is the calmest of all stations, as well as the most budgetfriendly of the three.

the local mangoes as the Philippines provide the best climate for growing them. D’Talipapa serves fresh seafood at negotiable and inexpensive prices. This seafood market located between Station 2 and 3 allows you to purchase seafood or have the option of having the stores cook them in front of you. Aplaya the Beach Bar & Italian Restaurant is famous for their fresh pizza and pasta. Situated at White Beach with a live DJ, its relaxed atmosphere is a must-visit and appeals to a global crowd.

The accommodation rates in Boracay mainly depend on the seasons throughout the year. The lowest rates are during the rainy season which runs from June to October. Peak season is from November to May, which consists of very little rainfall. The most optimal time to visit Boracay is the end of November up until the beginning of April which yields average temperatures of 25-32 degree Celsius. However, if you are up for the heat, May until mid-July can reach up to 38 degrees Celsius – don’t forget to bring your sunscreen! Sink your bare feet into the soft white sands of Boracay’s White Beach, one of its most popular beach destinations, stretched out to about four kilometers long. Relaxing island activities on this beach consist of diving, snorkeling, sunset cruising, and Banana Boat Rides in crystal blue waters. On the other side of the beach spectrum, Bulabog Beach appeals to the more athletic visitor, as it is the water sport capital of the island. Activities consist of windsurfing, kite surfing, and jet skiing.

New to any of these sports and want to explore your nautical curiosities? There are plenty of affordable lessons offered on the beach by experienced instructors. After a long day out on the beach, perhaps an indoor setting may be of interest. The D’Mall is the main shopping destination that is conveniently located in the middle of the island in Station 2. It has small shops that sell handcrafted souvenirs, jewellery, apparel, sarongs, as well as local fruits, vegetables and seafood.

Travel Tips Visitors need to keep into account the geographical location of Boracay and its exposure to sun radiation for long periods of time, especially when on the beach. Dehydration and sunburns is the last thing you want on a tropical trip, so make sure to stay hydrated and take plenty of sunscreen. It is also advised to avoid drinking tap water in Boracay, however bottled drinking water can be purchased just about anywhere.

As a result of the international recognition Boracay receives, there is a restaurant that caters to every taste bud. Make sure to try

Tilapia N’ Chips offers classic beer-battered Fish n’ Chips in the center of Station 2. Although renowned for their affordable crispy tilapia batter and soft fish, this restaurant also offers a variety of burgers and barbecue dishes.

Honeymoon By Armileen Naypes

beings, we naturally are attracted to cultivating relationships, and with the presence of technology, it has allowed us to maintain numerous conversations and social relationships simultaneously. Updating people on our lives and managing numerous conversations via technology have become mundane and normalized to the point that we have become desensitized by conversing with someone with their eyes on their phone screen. We are all familiar with this exclusionary feeling, yet still continue to do it ourselves. The thing is, people will know that you and your loved one are on your honeymoon and it is natural that they ask you how it is going. But don’t feel that you are obligated to respond to them right away, you will eventually respond, they will understand and respect that. This time away is for newlyweds to connect while disconnecting – disconnecting from social media and any sort of device you may have. However, the question remains – how often have you had the chance to completely disconnect from the iPhone, tablet, laptop or whatever gadget it may be? The reality is, we can’t. Technology has allowed us to be connected to people from kilometres and countries away and to be able to see what friends and family are doing, eating, and where they are located, within seconds of them publicly posting it. We’re obsessed with the notion of updating

lose your eyes. Imagine lying down on a comfy sun bed on the beach with the sun gracing your body, the sand between your toes, the cool breeze passing by your newly wedded spouse as you look over at them. It all feels surreal because you just survived the stress of the wedding and are finally away from the demands of work simply enjoying one another’s company. Then all of a sudden you hear the buzzing sound of his phone vibrate. Your spouse abruptly breaks your gaze and reaches for his phone. He uses the phone to block the sun from his face and starts texting. As soon as you know it, you are talking to your spouse whose phone is just an orchestra of buzzing and high pitched dings which makes you reach for your phone too. Your honeymoon is now filled with social dings of the reality you left behind. The term, “honeymoon” dates back to the 16th century, where the first month of marriage is considered to be the sweetest. It is an opportunity for the newlyweds to elope temporarily (or permanently), and to remove themselves from the realities of real life and truly connect with one another. It is their first time together spent as a married couple. But with the given technology of this day and age, people oftentimes have to compete for an individual’s undivided attention. It is certain that the newlyweds have been waiting for this moment for a very long time and have worked very hard organizing and surviving the stress of preparing a wedding. Quality time with your loved one without any interruptions is many a time difficult to attain. Going away for your honeymoon is one of the few socially-acceptable instances where you can use that time off work to enjoy one another’s company. Someone’s quality time is intangible and cannot be bought. This honeymoon is yours, and both of yours only. The human connection is such an unique experience. As social

and being updated. It seems that every post that pops up on your Facebook or Instagram feed appears to be the latest news within your group of friends or their group of friends. Having no access to it and not being able to contribute to it evidently provides us with some level of grief and anxiety. I mean, you’re probably aching to post a picture of you and your margarita by the beach with the hubby. But social media doesn’t have to be an independent, selfpromotional platform. People try to deactivate and try to temporarily limit their usage on social media – majority of the time spent off of it is spent thinking about seeing how many likes you could have received on that picture of you and your margarita by the beach with your hubby. I’ve been there. We have all been there. So instead of trying to stay away from it, as a couple you can modify your usage on social media as an activity that can be done together. Instead of having your head down fixated on your device, socially isolating your partner, sit side by side when

engaging in social media making it an experience where you can choose and caption photos together. The honeymoon is essential in learning to connect with your partner on different levels before heading back to that same reality you longed to escape. There tends to be negative connotations associated with social media and how it takes a toll on relationships, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Posting can be a collective decision where the two of you can choose and caption the photos as a couple which can actually bring you two closer together. Making each other a part of that activity is better than excluding your partner and being isolated in your own world. At the end of the day, your honeymoon should stand on its own as an experience that you two had together and no text, tweet, status update would be able to embrace that experience. Besides, sitting on the beach with the sun beating down on your face while your hands are in the air holding your phone blocking the sun wouldn’t make for a very pretty suntan to brag about anyway.

espite being the second smallest country in the world, Monaco is anything but small when it comes to its exquisite culture. There is plenty of lavish culture and historical attractions that Monaco can proudly offer to international visitors. Couples on their honeymoon can spend quality time together exploring the artistic and cultural aspects of the place. Enveloped by France and the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco embraces French as its primary language, followed by English, Italian, and Monegasque. However, take caution when referring to the Monegasque as French as it may hurt their national pride and identity. There are 24 countries that use the Euro (â‚Ź) as their single form of currency and Monaco is one of them, despite not being a member of the European Union. Monaco is

also recognized for being the home to some of the wealthiest people in the world. It is also celebrated for its gambling and services industry, so expect to drop some Euros on a good time and on luxury goods. Couples will rejoice in knowing that transportation will be the least of your worries. Due to the small area, the best way to explore the country is by foot or bicycle. Have a fear of hiking up treacherous hills? There are seven free-to-use public escalators that are open 24 hours a day that can give you a lift! Another option is commuting via bus which offers five routes (conveniently named Buses 1 through 5) and the cost of a ticket is about â‚Ź2. The use of a car is oftentimes avoided, as you will find yourself investing more time in finding parking than enjoying the beautiful views of Monaco by foot.

Honeymoon

The climate in Monaco is warm throughout the year with winters reaching a low of 8 degrees Celsius from December to February, and summers reaching an average of 25 degrees in July and August.

Monaco-Ville

Since the city is small it does not have its own international airport. However, the closest airport will be Cote d’Azur International Airport in Nice, France, which is 24 kilometers away from Monaco. From here, you can take the train, bus, or taxi, to get into the country, or if your wallet is up for it, a breathtaking helicopter ride cuts down travel time to a seven minute flight!

Where to go

Monaco is divided into four sections: Monaco-Ville, which is home to the older parts of the country, La Condamine and Fontvieille have plenty of recreational explorations, and finally Monte Carlo, which is oftentimes mistaken as the capital, also contains recreational activities and is the business district.

Oftentimes referred to as, “the rock”, it is a fantastic destination for visitors to stroll the historical villages that still stand today, while picking up a bite to eat or visiting one of the many souvenir shops in this quaint town.

Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium Take the number 1 or 2 bus from the Monte Carlo bus station to the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium where you can immerse yourself in this popular destination. This place attracts marine life lovers and those up for a nautical learning experience from the 4,000 fish in the aquarium. Its world-renowned exhibits display the breathtaking marine life in the waters of the Mediterranean.

Marlborough Fine Arts Gallery This gallery holds dazzling assemblage of work by Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, and Jules Brassai, to name a few. How does free admission sound?

Where to eat

The majority of the restaurants in Monaco feature French, Italian, and Mediterranean dishes catering to an international audience. Tucked away in the nooks of Monaco-Ville, Le Pinocchio is celebrated for its execution of delectable Italian food ranging from pizzas to pastas. It is also known for its outstanding service and warm family atmosphere. Azur Bar Monaco offers Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisine with dishes that will not break the bank. This restaurant provides original dishes by chefs who are passionate about their craft. For those exploring La Condamine, L’Escale is a must-go for mouth-watering Italian food by the seafront. This restaurant offers a variety succulent seafood dishes as well.

Travel tips With the accumulation of lodging costs, luxury shopping destinations, and exquisite dining, staying in Monaco may take a hit to your credit card. A budget-friendly compromise is to stay in a nearby town located outside of Monaco and commute into the country.

Planning your honeymoon? Here are some exciting destinations you can visit with your partner!

TULUM, MEXICO Well-known for its impressive archaeology, with the blue sea as its backdrop, there is no doubt that Tulum is a top spot for honeymooners as it provides picture perfect landscapes. The archaeological ruins located here are Coba, Ek Balam, and the most popular, Chichen Itza. It is recommended to stay in Tulum overnight and visit these sites early in the morning. The sunrises over the Caribbean are also a jawdropping view.

Sumba Island, Indonesia Though Bali reigns the spotlight for top destination in Indonesia, Sumba Island has slowly grasped global attention. Much more serene and mysterious than other honeymoon destinations, Sumba Island provides a challenging adventure in this sparsely-populated island. Those with a fascination for historical standings will find stone megaliths from the Neolithic/ bronze age scattered throughout the island — it is also one of the rare places these standings are found on the planet.

Off the coast of Tanzania, this semi-autonomous island is engulfed within the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Historically, it has also been used as a trade route for transporting mainly ivory and spices. To this day, Zanzibar is known for its eclectic palette of spices — honeymooners can find themselves on “Spice Tours”, allowing their taste buds to water in the flavours of this island. Make sure to stop by Stone Town where you and your partner can explore the beautiful architecture influenced by India and the Middle East.

Phuket, Thailand Always a hotspot for honeymooners, there is no doubt that this destination attracts visitors for its soft white sands and crystal blue waters. Historically it has been an island situated in major trading routes between India and China. Visitors can easily take note of the rich cultural influences Thailand has adopted, be it the magnificent Buddhist temples, experiencing a Thai Massage, or sinking your teeth in electric Thai cuisine.
