ast week I was invited to host the monthly Simbithi Quiz Night, held at Simbithi Country Club. I had no idea how popular this event is with people who live on the estate and outsiders lucky enough to be invited to make up a table.
The idea is that by pooling your collective knowledge, you have a better chance of answering the selection of somewhat challenging questions posed by the quizmaster. The evening starts at around 6.30 with a rather super buffet and by 7pm, the quiz gets underway. There are five rounds each with ten questions of varying degrees of difficulty across a fairly wide range of topics including science, sport, art, music, history and food. The winning team wins a super prize and there are some spot prizes won by lucky draw during the evening. Dessert is served after round three and an excellent bar service keeps the contestants well lubricated throughout the event. Judging from the numbers in attendance, it is instantly apparent that despite the increasingly wide variety of high tech home entertainment options now available to the well-heeled, the old fashioned quiz is still a winner. But it isn’t easy is it to compile fifty questions that will challenge the capacity and satisfy the expectations of a field that includes retired and active professionals from all walks of life – trust me…there were moments when I thought I might not make it out of there alive! But overall, the evening went well and the Simbithi team ran the event like

clockwork. If you are lucky enough to live on the estate or know someone who does, I would strongly recommend that you book a table for the next one – you’ll love it! On a completely different subject, I was fascinated to discover a selection of heirloom seeds on sale at Woolworths in the Lifestyle Centre recently. Heirloom or heritage seeds that have been handed down from generation to generation - generally a variety that is at least 40-50 years old, is usually no longer available in the commercial seed trade and that has been preserved and
kept true in a particular region. Obviously, these heirloom varieties have been saved because they have some real virtues to the home gardener. Classic examples would be heirloom tomatoes, which often have superior flavour, colour or texture for home garden situations but might lack the shelf life, uniform colour and shape, disease resistance or early maturity that would
BHEKI WON THE VESPA!
The excitement was
contagious as the finalists in the Lifestyle Superspar’s Win a Vespa Competition gathered to test their keys in the ignition of the brand new Vespa Primavera worth over R100 000. The holder of the sixth key, local policeman Bheki Ngcobo, couldn’t contain his joy when the Vespa fired up – he had won the competition! Congratulations, Bheki – and well done to Lifestyle Superspar. This was a really well run competition creating much excitement all round.

make them commercially viable. I was fascinated by the Charentais Melon seeds from Provence. The plant was adopted by legendary chef, Jean-Jacques Prevot, who broke down near the town of Cavaillon and while waiting for his car to be repaired, was introduced by chance to the delights of the Charentais Melon. So taken was he by the flavour and scent of this almost extinct melon that he incorporated it into his culinary repertoire and the foodie world went wild! The Charentais was saved and I am now growing some of these rare and exotic plants in my garden in Ballito with high hopes of success. It’s early days yet, but if all goes according to plan, we should see a melon or two by June – I’ll let you know how we progress! ANGO GROOVE is an 11-piece homegrown band that has created an exciting mix of pop and township music for over thirty years.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, during the darkest days of the Apartheid era, Mango Groove and Juluka were the only major South African music groups with both black and white band-members. Sometimes when they arrived at a club to perform, they were refused entry because they were multi-ethnic. Songwriter and bassist John Leyden formed Mango Groove in Johannesburg in 1984. Although it started small, the band's roster of personnel eventually swelled to 11 members. Lead vocalist Claire Johnston joined at age 17. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand while touring with the band. She and Leyden were married but although the marriage didn’t last, the music certainly has. The band has had at least 12 number-one hits in South Africa, and are the only band in South Africa's history with an album that remained in a sales chart for more than a year. They have received nearly every South African music award and video award, as well as a number of awards internationally. In 1992, Mango Groove performed, via
satellite uplink, for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in London, to an audience estimated at one billion people. They had previously performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Rock Against Racism concert in Paris. They were the only African band invited to perform at the 1997 Celebrate Hong Kong Reunification concert.

ATTITUDE determines your ALTITUDE
I
Just recently I watched a YouTube video of Joel Osteen called ‘High time’ and he emphasises the fact that being positive and having an energy filled outlook, places you in a good position. One could say in our present economic and political climate we have every right to feel dejected and negative, we are surrounded by chaos and corruption. But Attitude and maintaining good relationships counts for so much. In the bigger scheme of things, we are so privileged to have an abundance of good things and yes, at Ashton College we are living in a positive environment where we are surrounded by influences that can make you smile. This weekend was proof of that – People can make a difference through Faith, rust and Prayer. I have spoken to a number of people who attended the Prayer Gathering in Bloemfontein and their own personal account of the meeting is testimony to the fact that having the right attitude for the right reasons will lead to a positive outcome. Here at Ashton we have had many results which depict this attitude which people are unaware of. We continuously advertise our distinctions, both IEB and Cambridge, but what we don’t express are those results when students, and

a good number of them, improve from an E to a C symbol in their finals. Now that’s Education. Credit must be given to these students as well as their teachers. It is all dependent on your environment and your attitude. Surround yourself with positive people and witness the influence that it will have. Over the last couple of weeks we have had students who have excelled at National level. Dzemil Muric was crowned National Karate Champion in the U21 age group. He has been selected for Team SA to participate in the All Africa Championships as well as the Commonwealth Championship in September. On the athletics track Amy Naude was crowned the South African U15 Champion in the 400m event and broke the SA record in a time of 54,73. Cameron Pennell and Megan Tully both achieved bronze medals at the SA Youth Swimming Championships, whilst on the golf course Senayah Moodlier will be participating in the Sanlam SA Amateur Stroke Play Championships. Sophie Bell won the Women’s and Junior Womens’ events at the Buffalo City Surf Pro in East London. Great achievements and once again, I need to reiterate that for a young school, our students are performing exceptionally well, they make us proud on the academic, cultural and sporting stages.
The 2017 Ashton Matric Dance was held at the Fairmont Zimbali and the Marula Room was transformed into the tropical Island of Seychelles. The students all shone on the red carpet and many memories were made. • Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Remedial Teachers and Educational Psychologist included in school fees • Variety of Sport and Cultural Codes offered on campus • Expanding - additional Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade 6 classes • Construction of 19 new Intersen Classrooms with unique creative studios in each classroom • Grade 0000 - Grade 12 tel: 032 946 2096 | fax: 032 946 2104 email: admissions@ashtonballito.co.za web: www.ashtonballito.co.za

LIFE & STYLE CONSUMER AFFAIRS Welcome to Glenda Thompson
who joins us as our Consumer Affairs Columnist and talk show host at Life and Style. Glenda, who runs her own PR and Communications company Get-U-Noticed, has had over thirty years working as a community and consumer journalist, travel writer, marketing and PR consultant. She has a solid background in Public Relations and Communications and works as a consultant for the Hirsch Group and for several smaller clients in KZN.
HI Everyone! I am excited to be part of the Life & Style team as their Consumer Affairs Team Member! This is a fantastic time in the history of our hometown, with huge growth seen on all fronts. I see this column – and the weekly talk show – as an opportunity to help make a difference with regards to service generally, by ironing out problems and giving advice on issues that often come up for consumers. We live in a fast paced world where the criminal element in society is making every effort to wheedle their way into our bank accounts and personal information. Keeping our information safe is crucial, and this is something that I will be spending some time on. As Hirsch’s, the appliance and electronics specialists, are one of our anchor sponsors, I also want to help people understand how to maintain their appliances so they don’t need to constantly call in a repairman. Appliances are no different to cars when it comes to getting them serviced on a regular basis. I will be calling on experts in their fields with regards to legal and health issues, to help people understand how to prevent problems occurring. This is not going to be about shooting people down, but rather, getting to the bottom of an issue amicably. In my experience, no supplier deliberately gives bad service, and if something comes to their attention that has upset a customer, they make every effort to right the wrong. I am often asked where consumers stand with regards to the CPA (Consumer Protection Act) and in my experience, the CPA has been put in place as a guide to consumers so that they know their rights, but not for them to take advantage of suppliers. They still need to shop discerningly and not expect to be able to exchange items or get a refund at the drop of a hat. If you have any consumer related issues that you would like discussed in this column or on air, please contact me on gjthomo@gmail.com.

LLAN HIRSCH, the founder of Hirsch’s, the family owned, Durban based home appliance company that has backed the Dolphins for many years, gave an inspiring talk recently at the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket stadium to the players and the staff on his journey from appliance repairman to successful entrepreneur.
His story went back to the 1970’s when Allan and his wife Margaret, started there appliance repair store in Durban North with only R900 in the bank. “The 900 that we had to spend

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS Mom, I’m Not Feeling Well
- Again! STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
B
efore I begin, it’s important for me to mention that it is NORMAL for kids to get sick often... (sigh) sometimes it feels like it’s all the time! This is how their immune systems develop. Even the healthiest children will get ill often……. and that’s a good thing! What isn’t a good thing is if we rush them off to the family doctor with every sniffle or sneeze. Doctors are wonderful and must be consulted when necessary, however, it is simply unnecessary to treat minor illnesses with antibiotics or OTC medication, especially when it comes to children. You will actually do your children a disservice if they go on course after course of antibiotics. It will not only rob their bodies of ‘friendly bacteria’ or probiotics but also does not allow for the immune system to learn how to deal with infection either. The point I’m getting at is that there needs to be a mind shift change with the way we view childhood illness. No, it’s not fun for the parent(s) when your child gets sick but, rather than something to worry about, it should be viewed as a necessary part of growing up. A rite of passage if you will. The following has worked for us`: I have two boys, a three year old and a 9 month old. We have certainly had our fair share of fevers, coughs, colds, tummy bugs etc etc... However, after 10 years of working in the health and wellness industry, I have seen first-hand what the body is capable of given the right nutrients and environment. The following routine has helped our boys recover quickly and I believe has also helped their immune systems to develop normally. I exclusively breastfeed my 9 month old, so when he gets ill I simply increase the nutrients in my own diet with green juices, bone broth, fermented foods, extra vitamin C, D and E, probiotics, colostrum powder and zinc. I also give him a baby-specific probiotic, vitamin D3 drops (on cloudy days) and natural baby multivitamin drops. I make sure then that on the sunny days he is exposed to sunlight for 10 or so minutes, naked, in order for his body to produce its own vitamin D. In addition to all this I breastfeed on demand and cuddle him close
(skin on skin whenever possible). When he gets a fever I monitor him every hour or so. Breastfeeding often also helps keep him cool and supplies him with the nutrients he needs in order for his body to fight the infection. Side Note: Research shows that an infant’s saliva contains information about the baby’s immune status. During breastfeeding this information is read by receptors in the mother’s mammary gland and the immunological composition of breastmilk is adjusted accordingly. How amazing is that!? Other options for treating sick babies are homeopathic remedies. I love the Pegasus range. In particular, Antivirabac (a natural homeopathic antibiotic) and Teething, Pain & Fever (the name pretty much explains it!). Aromatherapy essential oils such as Eucalyptus and Peppermint can also be used to ease symptoms by opening up blocked airways. When our three year old gets sick we cut out sugar, gluten and dairy from his diet. No, this isn’t easy nor is it fun, but often his appetite drops anyway which helps. If he does want to eat, then for breakfast we give him a chocolate peanut butter smoothie loaded with hidden greens, omegas and superfoods. Lunch and dinner are usually simple meals made up of lots of vegetables, healthy fats, and quality protein (he doesn’t really like fruit). Next we encourage him to sleep as much as possible and make sure he gets daily sunlight on his skin. In terms of supplements he takes Junior Script by Medford (an immune boosting liquid multivitamin), Good Health Colostrum chews, Good Health Chewable Vitamin D3, Solgar Chewable Vitamin C, Viridian Children’s Synbiotic Probiotic Powder or Metagenics Ultraflora Synergy powder and A.Vogel Echinaforce Junior, all of which help support and boost his immune system. We also love Himalaya Septillin and Medford Cough Script for coughs and colds. Fulvic acid is another favourite which we use to treat infections (To our surprise our son loves it, calling it “black water!”) For ear and eye infections we use Colloidal Silver Spray or drops and to unblock a snotty nose we’ll use X-Clear Xylitol nasal spray for kids. If he gets a fever, again, we do not intervene unless it reaches 40 degrees. We do however,
make sure he drinks lots of water and if he hasn’t eaten we’ll give him a little raw honey to prevent any sudden drops in blood sugar. Lastly, although he is my “big boy,” I’ll also give him plenty of love and cuddles when he’s sick. There is definitely an emotional aspect to healing that I’ve learnt to embrace (excuse the pun). I love my boys dearly and hate when they are unwell, however, I also know that illness is a necessary part of their development. SHED THAT SPREAD 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge
S
HED THAT SPREAD is the brain child of Kate Koen. She was tired of body transformations promising the world and never delivering. So she spent a vast amount of time planning and preparing her challenge, turning it into the most comprehensive program that you will find.
The 12 week challenge starts off with a weigh in day where your base line results or starting point is determined. Photographs are taken and the intricacies of the challenge are explained in detail. The participants are given their first 4 week eating plan and a food diary to track their meals and beverage intake. During the 12 week period, participants are given full access to all boxing conditioning and fitness classes presented by Ringside. Along with the boxing
classes each participant on the challenge selects two mandatory weight training sessions a week. This allows the participants to obtain the benefits of both regular resistance training coupled with the fitness and cardiovascular benefits of the functional training presented in the boxing conditioning classes. After the initial 4 weeks the eating plan is amended according to the information provided in the food diaries. A second assessment is done where weight, height and body fat percentage are compared to the measurements taken at the initial weigh in. The training regimes, in terms of the weight training sessions are also changed at this point. After another four weeks the process is repeated again with another assessment day and the participants are given their final four week eating plan.
At the conclusion of the 12 weeks the participants are assessed for the final time and the final “after” photos are taken. The results are sent off to independent judges and the overall winners and runners up are announced at a cocktail evening and prize giving function. Shed that Spread works because Kate is in contact with the participants 24/7 and is super motivated to keep everyone else motivated at the same time. She has been known to answer calls or messages at 4am giving advice on what breakfast to eat before the 05:30 training session or even receiving images of various restaurants menu’s to give tips on what to eat and what to avoid while couples doing the challenge are on their date nights! You will not find a more comprehensive body transformation challenge. Like anything in life, if you work hard and follow the instructions, you will achieve amazing things!
Sean Steyn, Winston Ngilazi, Kate & Tyron Koen & Keegan Marsden
Former boxing professionals Tyron Koen and Sean Steyn set the pace for training on an epic scale with Winston Ngilazi and Keegan Marsden in support. You won’t find a better all-round conditioning regime – the boxing gym literally incorporates every But the heart and soul of the gym has a feminine touch – Kate Koen is the boss…and if there is any doubt, just ask anyone who has signed up on a 12 week challenge. Kate’s recipe of tough love and total support has produced awesome results and although she can be scarier than the guys, everyone loves her!
NEXT CHALLENGE 15 May 2017 A share of R20 000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. Prize split: Best male and female transformation.

A Brush with Technology
FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS
BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY
M
odern hair extensions can be
manufactured from either human or synthetic hair and there are a number of attachment methods. Whatever the material or the method, however, the aim is to blend the extensions as seamlessly as possible with your natural hair to make it appear longer and thicker, or to add a touch of contrasting colour.
Just like colour treatments, extensions require regular maintenance because they are attached near the root and as they ‘grow out’, they have to be reattached closer to the
root. If you still want extensions but are unable or unwilling to make this kind of upkeep commitment, you could try the clip-on versions that can be applied and removed at home. Even Disney princesses have to take care of their tresses and whether you have extensions or not, your hair
will benefit from the new-generation technology brushes on the market. Ceramic brushes have the advantage of heating up quickly – a definite win when you are in a rush but still want to look your best! When heated, this wonderful styling weapon emits negative ions which cut the positive ions that cause static, speed up blowdrying time, and seal the hair cuticle, offering a combination of hair-repair and beauty care to produce pictureperfect smooth, shining hair. The tourmaline brush operates like the ceramic brush – only better. It produces even more negative ions, heating up faster and holding and spreading the heat more effectively. The battery-powered hairbrush has an ionic generator that enables you to tame your frizzy, flyaway hair even when you are not using heat. The world is becoming more environmentallyaware and the haircare industry is no exception. The new eco-friendly brushes have bamboo bristles with embedded minerals that add a sleek and shiny lustre to your hair while you are protecting the planet. Carbon 1 is rapidly becoming the ‘secret to success’ ingredient in heat
styling technology. Not only does it offer very high heat durability but it lessens damage to the hair caused by the frequent use. Last but definitely not least, smart sensors embedded in cutting-edge styling technology are taking hair care to the next level. These smart-brushes contain a microscope, gyroscope and an accelerometer, which record the sound of breaking hair, vibrate when you brush too hard, and provide feedback via an app that enables you to assess your hair quality and evaluate which haircare routines help – or harm – your hair. With a brush like that, Cinderella wouldn’t have needed a Fairy Godmother to turn her out in spectacular style for the ball! Happy styling!

Two customer security division managers from local banks in Ballito gave a talk on the new trends in banking, empowering businesses to keep up to date and on top of the ever evolving technology and understanding the different options that they can implement into their businesses while at the same time explaining the necessary security steps that need to be put in place and what to avoid.“It is imperative that we keep up to date with the latest trends in business to enhance your customers experience and simplify processes where possible with the use of technology, especially when it comes to payment methods, but at the same time being aware of the risks involved and eliminating them where possible. COMRADES CALLING
THE DOLPHINS GET READY TO RUN THE BIG ONE MIKE CHARLES
T
HE epic annual Comrades Marathon is just around the corner and many dedicated (and/or slightly crazy) local runners are now in the final stages of their Comrades training. With this in mind, the local Dolphin Coast Striders running club decided to organise a Comrades route tester covering almost 60km of the up-run from Hillcrest to the Collegians Club in Pietermaritzburg on the morning of Thursday 27 April.
Now, any Comrades runner will tell you how valuable it is to be able to run the route beforehand, but organising and co-ordinating a test run on this scale was no easy feat. Careful route planning was backed up by a convoy of support vehicles and outstanding sideline food and drink support from teams of selfless seconders (there was even a Joburg
contingent of Jeppe runners and supporters sharing in the stress… err... fun). Having conquered mighty stretches including the hills of Ntshanga and Polly Shortts, the Dolphins arrived triumphant for a braai at the Collegians Club in Maritzburg, confident that their mettle had been tested and that their training was on track for the big day ahead. Whether you’re an aspiring Comrades runner, a seasoned pro, or a complete novice who hasn’t tackled a 5k run yet, the Dolphin Coast Striders want to promote running on the North Coast and would love to help you find your stride with their supportive running community. Volkswagen’s Updated Amarok Bakkie It’s Arrived!
A
long with a refreshed design, the refreshed Amarok is available with a new 3.0-litre V6 165kW TDI engine. New features include an all-new interior and Volkswagen’s latest in-car infotainment systems as well as additional safety and technology elements.
The new model retains the previous Amarok’s dimensions; it measures 5.25m long, 2.23m wide and 1.83m high. The new Amarok is available in four trim levels; Comfortline, Highline, Highline Plus and Extreme. The entry-level Comfortline starts from R487 000 while the flagship Extreme derivative is R748 000 The 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine is the only six-cylinder diesel engine in the segment. The top-of-the-range engine delivers 165kW/550Nm channelled through its standard eight-speed auto The V6 engine pushes the Amarok to a top speed of 193km/h and sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 8.0 seconds. From the outside the new Amarok distinguishes itself from the previous model through a redesigned front bumper and radiator grille incorporating front fog lights, new alloy wheels and a third brake light
with LED technology. Aligned with the latest Volkswagen design DNA, seen in the new Caddy, Transporter and forthcoming Crafter, horizontal lines dominate the front of the new bakkie. Inside the cab the changes are more prominent with an all-new dashboard design which incorporates Volkswagen’s modular infotainment system with touchscreen radio, App-Connect, Bluetooth and USB interface (iPod/ IPhone compatible). In terms of safety, the updated bakkie is fitted with four airbags, ESP and automatic Post-Collision Braking System (which can reduce the chance or severity of a secondary accident in the event of a collision).
Love That New Car Smell? It Could Be Very Bad For You
N
ew cars are failing to filter out polluted air, a study shows.
Their owners could be inhaling up to 10million toxic particles with each breath. The air inside new models was found to be up to ten times more toxic than that on pavements. ‘Drivers and their passengers can be getting very large doses of particulates if they are in a car with poor ventilation,’ said Nick Molden, of Emissions Analytics, the firm which carried out the tests. ‘The particles are so tiny – as small as 23 millionths of a millimetre – that they are invisible but long-term exposure is very bad for drivers’ health.’ The testing agency counted the polluted particles per cubic centimetre of air in the cars over four hours of urban, rural and motorway driving. Normal air contains pollen, dust and microbes, but few are a health risk compared with the soot emitted from engines – especially diesels. Prashant Kumar, professor of environmental engineering at Surrey University in the U.K. said: ‘If you are stopped in congested traffic with your windows closed, as at traffic lights, then these toxins become highly concentrated.’ In the research, the dirtiest vehicle was a lowpriced car that recorded an average of nearly 20,000 particles in each cubic centimetre and a peak of 435,000pcc. As adults usually inhale 500 cubic centimetres of air per breath, someone inside would take in 10million particles per breath. The cleanest car was an upmarket saloon with an average of 75pcc and a maximum of 2,400. The final data will be published when enough cars have been tested to let consumers make a considered choice. Mike Hawes, of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, told the Sunday Times there were no regulations on air quality in vehicles. But he said the United Nations was leading discussions to introduce a new global standard.
