N April in a landmark ruling the Department of Environmental Affairs acceded to public pressure to curtail certain operations at the EnviroServ Waste Management’s Shongweni Landfill Site.

Since December 2015, residents in areas inland of the site have blamed the company for a multitude of illnesses, including nosebleeds, asthma, bronchitis and headaches, which they say are a result of "toxic fumes" emanating from the site. Estate agents and residents of the upmarket suburbs in the highway area say that since the news of the smell spread in 2015, buyers have been reluctant to invest in the area. Mthembeni Msomi, a resident of the Shongweni Dam area, said: "This is the same smell that has been causing people here to get sick. The hospitals here are far away and this company is allowed to continue to make us sick. I think authorities must do something about this." Upper Highway Air, a local environmental organisation at the forefront of the battle against the EnviroServ landfill, said more than 15,000 people had lodged complaints since the beginning of March. The Department of Environmental Affairs, beleaguered by this enormous weight of local activism has now suspended all acceptance, treatment and disposal of waste at the EnviroServ Waste Management’s Shongweni Landfill Site, in terms of section 56 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act.

In the light of this ruling, Lauren Johnson, one of the directors of Upper Highway Air suggested that the waste stream could be taken to another hazardous waste landfill such as Dolphin Coast Landfill in Stanger. Now, after a rather ominous silence around the matter, an interesting story appeared in The North Coast Courier two weeks ago, an extract of which I have selected for you below. “Have you ever wondered where all the waste we produce ends up after it gets thrown out? The Ilembe Chamber of Commerce paid a very informative visit to the Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM) site last week to get an answer to this question and find out more about the operation of this impressive landfill site. “We use these member hosted board meetings as an opportunity to showcase the diverse and exceptional nature, and potential, of industry in our district,” said Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse. DCLM is the largest landfill of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is classified as an H:H, or High Hazard/ Class A site that can deal with all sorts of waste. DCLM’s technical and environmental manager, Kyle Gaffar told The Courier they have one of the most advanced sites in the country and frequently consult on best practice with other landfill sites across the world who are keen to emulate DCLM’s procedures and safety measures.” If I was a conspiracy theorist I would hypothesise, on the basis of this, that this spin doctoring is an attempt to soften the reality that we are probably

already on the receiving end of the toxic waste that has caused all of the fuss down the road. Why should this be of interest to you? Oh, I don’t know…maybe a monster landfill site full of hazardous toxic waste will add to the value of property in the region…maybe tankers full of poison travelling on our notoriously dangerous highways will add new excitement to our laid back coastal lifestyle. Maybe “toxic fumes” carry an air of romance in a post-apocalyptic, Walking Dead kind of Zombie culture way. Maybe, if you knew it had been coming, you might have wanted to have a bit of a say in the matter…after all, it’s your constitutional right. Yes, I know it has to go somewhere and it’s a massive revenue spinner for some, but no matter how you choose to spin it, I can’t see an upside to a toxic waste landfill site in our backyard. I think that this could be the beginning of something ugly but I really hope that I am wrong. Watch this space. K

OPERATION FIRESTORM – WITH LOVE FROM THE DOLPHIN COAST

T

HE recent wildfires in the Southern Cape have left tragedy and destruction in their wake.Spurred by the images on news feeds and social media, residents of the Dolphin Coast have been responding generously with donations of food, clothing, blankets, boxes, and basic provisions. But as the smoke starts to lift and the full scale of the devastation becomes clear, aid organizations are now in urgent need of funds to staff and operate field hospitals and to spearhead rebuilding efforts… Something big needs to be done quickly.

OPERATION

FIRE

Operation Firestorm is a one-day, 12-hour fundraiser on Thursday 15 June 2017, supporting the aid relief operation in the fire-ravaged Knysna region in the Southern Cape. In response to the call from community leaders and people of influence in Ballito, the fundraiser is coordinated by Ballito-based community radio station Radio Life & Style 88FM, galvanizing Dolphin Coast residents behind a common goal of raising R100 000 towards the efforts of the internationally-respected Gift of the Givers organisation, currently working in Knysna to provide aid on the ground. This concentrated, radio-driven fundraiser is a show of love in action from one coastal corner of South Africa to another. On Thursday 15 June, tune in to Radio Life & Style 88FM or stream online at www.lifeandstyle.fm for a special radiothon day of action… Then go online on Thursday and donate towards the Operation Firestorm fundraiser hosted on www.givengain.com. Stand up, be counted, and contribute towards making a real difference in the lives of people who are struggling to find hope in the wake of natural disaster.

IDA DU PLOOY HARCOURTS - DOLPHIN COAST

“For a man’s house is his castle, and each man’s home is his safest refuge.”

I

– Edward Coke 1628.

N the current political and economic situation more and more people are looking to sell their homes. Whatever their motivation, being it financial or because of an emotional (Death, Divorce or Distress) their attachment to their home makes it hard to value their property objectively.

The majority of people who are ‘selfvaluating’ their home, will over value them, not realising that what they are effectively doing is expecting buyers to over-compensate them. Here are a few reasons why you need a good agent to help you getting closer to the marketrelated price. Harcourts Dolphin Coast’s agents are all registered and licensed agents with local knowledge and they are highly motivated to help you with a professional and researched comparative market analysis. (CMA)

•“We NEED our Price to buy our next home, otherwise we won’t be selling.” Working with a qualified and experienced agent you will be guided to sell your property at market value, and not your “wish” price. As your agent, we understand that your price requirement to purchase your future property cannot be calculated into the pricing of your current home. A simplistic comparison is to remember that the price you have sold your old car for, cannot be the same as the price of a brand new car. The same principle applies when selling your home to up-scale. Competitively pricing your house to sell will give you the best opportunity of selling your home in the shortest time so that you will not to lose the new home you would love to purchase. •We will start HIGH and see what offers we get.... This is the most common mistake sellers make. By starting out too high you will assist your competition to sell their home first and not yours. High priced properties attract high price buyers and these buyers know and recognize value. Buyers research the market long before they contact an agent. They would have seen what is on offer on all Internet Property Portals. Experience tells us that buyers are quick to dismiss over-priced properties. You will not receive any offers. To maintain negotiating power it is essential that you work closely with your agent, using market evidence, to price your home as competitively possible right from the start. •I am not in a hurry to sell. I can wait to get my price. As any good agent will tell you, one of the first questions buyers ask is:” How long has the property been on the market?” Buyers often attach a lower value to a property that has been on the market for a long time, whereas they are more likely to pay a premium price when a property is new on the market. Time and perception of value are inseparable. When sellers eventually drop their price, the initial rush and premium price opportunity has long passed. The house has been on the market far too long with little interest and eventually sells for much less than what it is actually worth. •We invested a lot of money when we put in the pool ( Additional capital spent ) A pool (or any improvement made for your own convenience) may make your home more appealing to some,

GLENDA THOMPSON

I EVERYONE,

I am loving your feedback on the show and the column! Thank you so much - please keep it coming. It’s great to be working with the Life and Style team who are all committed, via the press and on radio, to making this heavenly part of the world fun and exciting – but also safe and sound. Thanks too, for supporting our fantastic regular sponsors, Food Lovers Market, Hirsch’s, Rest Assured and Cloud Nine. They are all delighted to be passing on their wonderful weekend specials on radio at 8.30 every Friday. Incidentally, Food Lovers Market is about to launch a wonderful campaign for the kids in the community – the GOODNESS GANG! If there is one sure way to get your children eating more vegies and fruit, this is it! Pop in now to find out more about it. Hirsch’s, Cloud Nine and Rest Assured have a massive clearance sale on this weekend so pop down there too to find some great bargains. Keep listening to the show every Friday, from 8.30 to 9.00. For crazy specials from our sponsors, great tips and good, solid consumer advice. With the price of electricity escalating, we mentioned some excellent ENERGY SAVING TIPS on our show a few weeks ago, and I have been asked to repeat some of them here: PAINLESS PENNY PINCHING • Switch off lights in unoccupied rooms. • Use energy-efficient appliances for cooking - slow cookers are best for preparing winter warming meals such as stews, whilst microwaves are best for preparing your favourite small-volume winter meals. • Swap your bath for a shower - keep it hot and short; showers use less electricity and water. • Warm your bed with an electric blanket - switch it on an hour before bed time and switch it off when you get into your bed. Alternatively, use a hot water bottle to keep your feet happy; you can also use a hot water bottle in front of the television. • Make regular pool maintenance a priority - by limiting filtering to once every 24 hours during winter - it could contribute to notable savings on the energy required to run your pool pump. • Switch off appliances at the power point when you are not using them - appliances can use up to 50% of the electricity they use when operating, while on standby mode. • Boil only enough water in the kettle for the number of cups of hot drinks you are preparing. • Don’t use hot water for tasks you can accomplish with cold water such as rinsing dishes and vegetables – and in your washing machine and dishwasher. It’s great to know that there is a HOTLINE for consumers who have been unfairly treated. In KZN the Consumer Complaints Hotline number: 0800 333 667 which is a free service to the public Please keep your queries coming in. Email me on gjthomo@gmail.com

Eco Kidz – A Happy Learning Environment CAROL WEBSTER, PRINCIPAL OF ECO KIDZ

FAMILY is one of the most important things in my life,’ says Carol Webster, the principal of Eco

Kidz, the nursery school in Simbithi Eco Estate. ‘Not only do I want my children to have the best education, but I want them to be happy, loved and supported in everything they do.

I started Eco Kidz not only for the business aspect, but to help raise children in a nurturing environment.’ Carol’s goal is to have a happy school where both educators and children wake up excited to come to school every day. One of the best parts of her day is seeing the kids

walk through the door with a big smile. ‘I believe this family aspect of our school is the main reason why it has flourished and is now an asset to Curro Mount Richmore. Even though we joined the bigger Curro family we will continue to love and nurture everyone in our care.’ Eco Kidz is managed by Curro Mount Richmore since January, 2016. Educators receive regular training to educate and stimulate learners while playing in a safe environment.

GROW YOUR OWN ORGANIC FOOD

rowing organic food has endless benefits. It’s healthy, delicious, economical and incredibly satisfying, both mentally and physically. You have more control over the quality of food you’re feeding your family and you’re doing the earth a favour, too. You’ll also waste less because you end up picking only the food you need on the day you plan to eat it.

To ensure that your garden is protected from moles, birds and monkeys you can build a simple framework covered with bird netting with raised beds to keep moles at bay. This also works well as you don’t have to bend as much when tending to your plants. And the internet is full of useful ideas to help you when it comes to what to grow and what to do to keep your plants healthy. For example, sprinkling coffee grounds on the soil will keep away the ants; crushed egg shells sprinkled around the base of your plants will deter slugs and snails; sage and marigold repel insects from newly seeded areas; earthworm “wee” is the best fertiliser around and a small plastic or Tupperware container filled with beer and sunk slightly into the soil will attract slugs and keep them away from precious plants. Growing your own organic garden is easy and lots of fun. Make it a family affair and involve your children. It’s a brilliant way to teach them the importance of eating organic food, and how your health is related to what you eat. And just think of the time and money you’ll save by strolling to your garden to pick your herbs and vegetables, instead of hopping into your car (fuel emissions going into the atmosphere …) and driving to the shops. ORGANIC PESTICIDE (note: this is a very potent mixture) 1 head of garlic; 4 onions; 1 Tbs crushed/dried chopped chilli; 2 Tbs cooking oil; 2 Tbs liquid soap Blend the garlic, onion and chilli and let it stand, covered, for 24 hours. Add oil and liquid soap. Keep refrigerated in a sealed container. Use 1 tablespoon of mixture to 1 litre of water for spraying.

Book I read clearly gives the instruction that we should love our neighbour as we love ourselves yet every day we are answering questions about plants suitable for hiding them! I guess that loving and hiding are not necessarily the same, allowing us to hide what we love, if you get my drift. This is not always that easy as properties become smaller with less garden space available. One needs to determine the height you want to reach and whether this will be achieved by planting trees, palms or shrubs. Many shrubs will grow to a height of 3m or more but when we start

looking at 5m and 6m we need to think carefully. Should space allow, one can plant suitable trees at the back and attractive shrubs a few meters in front in order to allow the trees to develop with a good spread and the shrubs to grow naturally. Should the space be narrow and it is necessary to keep the barrier planting clipped, you are better planting shrubs with smaller leaves

which will manage to look good even with continual clipping.

The first tree that I would recommend is the beautiful,

Indigenous, Halleria lucida or Tree Fuschia, which will grow to a height of about 6m with a 5 m spread. This can be free standing or planted closer together and clipped into a formal hedge and the beauty of this magnificent tree is that it will attract multitudes of nectar feeding birds, followed by seed eating birds; the flowers protruding from the branches and stems, giving birds the privacy they need to feed without

VERY DAD HAS ONE – it’s that draw or box full of little bits and pieces – things he won’t throw away because they might be useful someday. It’s probably a bit of a mess, a jumble of old batteries, business cards, loose coins, paper slips, glue, pocket knife, gadgets, torch and more.

disturbance and the clipping into shape will not deter the production of flowers. There should be a law in the land that every garden has to have at least one of

these trees. No matter how much you need privacy, please think carefully before you plant Strelitzia nicolai, more commonly known as Wild Banana. Extremely difficult to control, the plant multiplies by producing suckers from the base and given time, you might just regret the day you ever planted it.

If you are allowed Exotic plants, you will not be disappointed with Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Deep Pink Butterfly. What a winner!!!! Happy in pretty extreme coastal conditions, you will be blessed with the most beautiful deep rose pink Hibiscus blooms for most of the year. May be planted as a small tree or clipped into a hedge, although continual clipping might interfere with the production of flowers. In my next article, I will discuss shrubs that will do well as hedges. Until then, give your spirit a lift by paying a visit to a Nursery, if only to enjoy the beauty of Nature which can be found in abundance.

Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Walk and Half Marathon

HE year 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the untimely death of Chief Albert Luthuli after a suspect accident on the railway bridge in Groutville, KwaZulu-Natal on 21 July 1967. Hundreds of participants from KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces will descend on Groutville for the

Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Walk and Half Marathon on Saturday, 22 July 2017, to commemorate the occasion and trace the final steps of this inimitable son of the soil. Chief Albert Luthuli was a devout Christian, chief of the Groutville Amakholwa Tribe, one of the longest serving presidents of the African National Congress, and the first African winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The event in his honour is spearheaded by Groutville community leader Zakhele Gumede and supported by the Ilembe District Municipality, the KwaDukuza

While the routes differ for the 11.5 kilometre Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Walk and the 21 km Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Half Marathon, the highlight of both will be the opportunity for participants to set foot on the railway bridge where Luthuli was allegedly hit by a train and to visit his memorial site situated in close proximity. The route passes several iconic sites that contribute to the prolific history of the area. These include the Mahatma Gandhi memorial and statue of Chief Luthuli on Chief Albert Luthuli Street, the King Shaka Visitor’s Centre which houses Shaka’s grave, the Observation Rock upon which King Shaka used to sit and watch his impis according to Zulu history, the soccer field where then New York senator Robert F Kennedy’s helicopter landed when he visited Chief

Gumede said the walk made its debut in July 2016 when over 500 people of all ages participated. “This year is particularly significant given the 50th anniversary of Chief Albert Luthuli’s death and the main purpose of these events is to acknowledge and celebrate his life, but also to highlight the rich history and heritage of this area and grow its socioeconomic and tourism potential,” he said.

the first winner! One of South Africa’s most legendary boxers, Elijah “Tap Tap” Makhathini, also lived in the area. “In KwaDukuza we have a rich legacy and we hope these events will help us use our heritage to build a tourism economy,” said Gumede. Pre-registration for the Chief Albert Luthuli Legacy Walk and Half Marathon and the charity golf event is essential. For more information or to register, visit www.luthuliwalk.org.za. The town’s Luthuli Museum has also been proclaimed a national monument and includes the original 1927 home of Chief Luthuli situated at 3233 Nokukhanya Luthuli Street. In addition, Groutville has the little-known distinction of being the birth-place of one of South Africa’s literary pioneers and the first professor of Zulu at Wits University, the poet and author, B. IS RUNNING THE BEST EXERCISE?

A

ccording to a review of evidence in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Disease, runners live three years longer than non-runners. You don’t even have to run fast, or for long, to see a benefit. You can drink, smoke, be overweight and still reduce your risk of dying early by running – by between 25% and 40%. The authors of the review say that no other exercise has such an impact – an hour of running will, statistically speaking, increase your life expectancy by seven hours. While running regularly can’t make you immortal, the review says it is more effective at prolonging life than walking, cycling or swimming. Two of the authors of the review were also involved in a study published in 2014 that found a mere five to 10 minutes a day of running, at less than six miles an hour, reduced the risk of heart disease and early deaths from all causes. This is considerably less effort than government recommendations of 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week – which most people ignore.

surfaces, do exercises to strengthen your leg muscles, avoid hills and get good running shoes. But Brellenthin says there is no evidence of running increasing the risk of osteoarthritis of the knee. Running should be built up gradually and its benefits may plateau at 30 miles a week. Brellenthin says that runners have higher levels of aerobic fitness, lower levels of body fat and smaller waists than those who do other activities. Running may be particularly good at shifting abdominal fat. You only need to do 30 to 60 minutes a week to reap the benefits, so perhaps we should all give it a try.

The solution

The best exercise is one that you enjoy and will do. But otherwise … it’s probably running. Running is cheap, easy (as in you go out of your house and just do it) and you can’t fake it – it’s always energetic. Even a jog counts as moderately vigorous exercise. If you are time poor, you need run for only half the time to get the same benefits as other sports. Angelique Brellenthin, of the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, one of the review’s authors, says it takes 105 minutes of walking to yield the same benefits as a 25-minute run. There are tragic but rare deaths during races, but non-runners are twice as likely to die from sudden heart attacks and strokes as runners. To avoid knee pain (and you can’t always, as it may just be how your knee cap is positioned), you can run on soft

1964 Porsche 356 Cabriolet that the late music icon, Janice Joplin, bought used in 1968, recently sold at auction for a record price. She had it painted red with a mural that included landscapes, butterflies, birds, floating eyes, skull-like faces and mushrooms.

After her death (4- October 1970, aged 27), ownership of the car went to her siblings, Michael and Laura Joplin. For the past 20 years was on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland before going on auction. The estimate was $400,000-$600,000, but in seconds, the price jumped, and in just five minutes the car was sold, for $1.76 million. This was a world-record price at auction for such a model, a spokesman for the firm said. The buyer got a fantastic classic Porsche that transcends art, pop culture and social movements, recently restored to running order.

FreshlyGround – Magic in the Sugarcane

T

HE SECOND MARRIOTT BALLITO BEATS CONCERT at Sugar Rush Park in Ballito was a wonderful example of what South Africa can become if we are able to rise above the grubby political mischief that is doing its best to tear us apart.

On Sunday, people of all ages, colour and creed came together in a park-like setting to celebrate family and friendship and the joy that good music can bring. There were fewer than a thousand people there but the atmosphere was so special that the memory will linger long after the final notes drifted away on the breeze. The organisation was slick and professional, with security and medical services subtly on standby to ensure that everyone was safe and comfortable. And then there was the music… South Coast outfit, The Kickstands got the show going with some of the finest acoustic guitar work ever heard on the North Coast. And then there was FreshlyGround…the diminutive Zolani Mahola captures the audience with a charm that is infectious and the hits just kept on coming. People were dancing as if no one was watching – carried away by the sheer joy of the occasion. If you were there, you will remember…if you weren’t, you missed something really special. Don’t miss the next one! Pics - Precision Photography │ 082 924 5810 │ www.precisionphotographyballito.co.za
