nother Easter has passed and we are headed into winter again. I don’t know about you, but I have never really been a fan of winter…this is no doubt as a result of having been born and raised in what used to be called the Highveld, the industrial heartland of which was seriously cold in winter.

The birdbath in the garden of the home I grew up in in Benoni, was often frozen solid and icicles hung from garden taps sometimes forming little ice columns to the frozen grass below. Black frost was a regular event and we wore woollen gloves to school. Fireplaces were popular back then, fuelled by coal that was delivered in sacks by terrifying men blackened by coal dust who Esther Kubheka said would catch me and take me away in a sack to a very cold, dark place if I was naughty…and I was quite naughty as a little boy. Especially at Easter time, when the Easter Bunny had hidden chocolate Easter eggs in the garden for my sisters and me to find. I was the eldest and the spoils were never really equally distributed…not even the prospect of being hauled away in a sack by the shadow men, moderated my disproportionate share of the Easter spoils. I loved those chocolate eggs… actually, I still do, which made Easter disappointing for me this year because the Easter Bunny passed me by completely. Perhaps he was working in collusion with my beloved, Sue, who is very keen on a healthy regime of exercise and diet which I wholeheartedly support, but as a traditionalist, I find it hard not to

used car trade might term somewhat “rubbed” and if you can find a place that has been seriously “rubbed” for the past fifty of more years in one of the more derelict parts of the city bowl, you could be sitting on a gold mine. People in Cape Town will happily pay handsomely for the experience of quaffing a trendy concoction in what could easily pass for the set of Les Miserables. But hang on…I am now beginning to sound like my dad…and as much as I loved him, he did tend to dwell on the more practical side of the scale while I was always way off over on the other side, so to speak. Now I can see where he was coming from…and where I am going to if I don’t change tack, so let me rather say that Cape Town is a great place for a quick trip through the looking glass or down the rabbit hole, but it is rather cold, damp and windy right now, so I am happy to be back in Ballito. embrace the chocolate aspect of Easter when it comes around. Still, there are many who tell me that Easter eggs are not the reason for the season and of course, they are quite right. To all who believe, I hope that this Easter was a blessing to you in every respect - and if you happen to have any Easter eggs left…well, remember that it’s okay to share them! Winter on the North Coast is of course nothing like the bitter affair that it is in the Big Smoke or in Cape Town, for that matter. Sue and I were in Cape Town last week to attend our younger son’s graduation ceremony and I have to say that every time I visit that lovely city, I am delighted to come home to Ballito. Cape Town is vibrant and exciting but its main attractions are largely geared for the tourist trade which makes it an expensive destination for South Africans. And then there are the people…as the old showbiz saying goes, “Cape Town – great set…pity about the cast!” Gin bars are still very much in vogue in Cape Town and part of their attraction seems to lie in finding the right location. In Cape Town Gin bar terms, the right destination is what the

e are constantly informed of rental horror stories ranging from nightmare tenants, greedy landlords, lazy agents and countless other woes surrounding the rental industry. As a Landlord, you want your investment protected, and as a Tenant, you want your deposit looked after and a comfortable place to live. To avoid the frustration of financial loss, stress and damage to your property, make sure you are not committing these seven deadly rental sins.

1.Inadequate screening of tenants

This is the number one deadly sin. Poorly screened tenants are incredibly costly in the long run. Trustworthy rental agencies such as Rentalsdotcom will firstly do a proper credit check. This is worth every cent. Never accept tenants on face value, as they are often desperate to find a home and may resort to saying or doing anything to get your trust. •Complete a thorough credit screening with a recognised credit bureau. •Verify their employment and income, covering at least three times the monthly rent. •Keep a copy of their ID •Contact at least the last two landlords or rental agents listed as references. The handling of damage deposits is clearly outlined in the Rental Housing Act. The deposit remains the tenant’s property and needs to be deposited into an interest bearing account.

2.Poorly structured lease agreement

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING? PENNY FOURIE

T

HOUSANDS of Ballito residents joined the nationwide rallies recently demanding President Jacob Zuma step down, blaming him for a week of financial turmoil triggered by his sacking of the finance minister.

The demonstrations came following the recent cabinet reshuffle by Mr Zuma which led to the country’s credit rating

being cut to junk status. The North Coast community answered appeals on social media by the SaveSA campaign to gather together to restore the integrity of the state. Carrying posters reading “We want Zuma gone”, and “South Africa is not for sale”, among others. The protestors comprised of people of all ages and races united in their effort to stand together against a corrupt government.

Demonstrators told the Life & Style they were taking a stand against state capture and corruption and the SaveSA campaign was about sending a message to the president that his leadership was no longer serving the people of this country. Despite the initial location of Ballito’s SaveSA demonstration having to be re-routed at the eleventh hour in order to avoid a confrontation with a counter demonstration by pro-Zuma supporters, the protest went ahead peacefully. The anti-Zuma crowd gathered at Compensation Beach Road between the La Montagne Hotel and the Balvista Centre in Ballito, while the pro-Zuma protestors gathered at Shaka’s Head and marched to the BP Garage on Ballito Drive. SaveSA demonstration organiser, Nic Jordan, addressed the crowd once they had reached their destination calling on Zuma to step down and give South Africa back to the people. On the other side of Ballito supporters of Mr

Zuma turned out in large numbers to defend the president. Clad in the yellow, green and gold colours of the ANC, the marchers danced and waved placards emblazoned with the words: “Nationalisation of land and mines”, and “Defend ANC from White Monopoly Capital”. Further demonstrations are planned.

That is according to researchers at Latvia's University of Sigulda. The study, published in the journal Food & Nature, assessed how the alcoholic beverage affected calories in mice. They found the tipple triggers an 'after burn' effects that enhances your body's ability to burn calories for a whole hour after you finish your drink. The mice who were fed regular doses of the spirit saw a 17 percent increase in their metabolic rate, according to Yahoo. Lead author, Professor Thisa Lye, said: 'Consumption of gin resulted in a marked increase in metabolic rate, which indicates the spirit may have a slimming effect on the body.' This likely stems from the core ingredient: antioxidant-rich juniper berries. These berries, common in Europe, are a natural diuretic and aid digestion, helping to ease bloating. In natural medicine, juniper has also been used to ease inflammation in joints for people with arthritis. In fact, a 2008 study published in the Journal of Diabetes Nursing found gin and tonic is the safest alcohol drink for people with type 1 diabetes, given juniper's rejuvenating qualities that help to ease inflammation of the arteries. Granted, all these health benefits will be crushed if you pair your spirit with a highly calorific mixer like quinine-heavy tonic or a sugar-sweetened juice. Gin is one of the lowest-calorie spirits available, with just 97 calories per shot. However, sugar-sweetener mixers fuel bloating, destabilize metabolism, and affect digestion. To avoid extra calories, try pairing your gin with a slim-line tonic, and add rosemary, basil or cucumber for a twist of flavour.

The Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series will add to an already communitybased lifestyle in Ballito, as it brings people together in the open fields of Sugar Rush Park for the ultimate family entertainment. Locals will be able to enjoy time with friends and family, savor great food and beverages, take advantage of a fully supervised kiddies zone, and of course, listen to some of the best musical talent South Africa has to offer. Ballito Beats Series Director Stu Berry of Impi Concept Events believes that it was only a matter of time before Ballito demanded its very own music series. “In recent years, we have watched as Ballito has grown significantly, both in size and popularity. And particularly because Ballito has become so lifestyle orientated, we felt there was just one thing missing up North: great, quality, live entertainment. So, we made a business decision to take the music to the people of Ballito. And so far, the interest for 2017’s four shows has been phenomenal. In addition, we’re really excited to get the series underway with one of South Africa’s most iconic bands: Mango Groove.” All shows will take place on a Sunday afternoon, with gates opening at 1pm. Mango Groove will kick off the inaugural Marriott Ballito Beats on the 14th of May. Locals can then look forward to the larger than life sounds of Freshly Ground on the 11th of June, the familiar

favourites sung by The Parlotones on the 17th of September, and the unmistakable melodies as South African rock legends Arno Carstens and Ard Matthews pair up on the 29th of October. Sally Anderson, Head of Marketing at Marriott is thrilled to be a part of this new music series. “We are very excited to be included in this new venture of bringing family entertainment to the North coast.” From mountain biking to shopping, estate living, pristine beaches, quality restaurants… and now a world-class music series; Ballito officially has it all. With a booming community of over 40 000 people, and growing, the Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series promises to deliver on its promise to all locals looking for family entertainment right in their very own back yard.

UMANS ARE EVOLVING BEINGS. As we live, experiences flow and build up to make us what and who we are at any given time. The harmonious arrangement of objects in a home or office bring together the details that becomes an extension of the personalities of the people who live in that space.

EPIC Dolphin Coast Swim – A WORLD FIRST

T

HERE were easier ways to get to France. On a Sunday in August 1875, a British naval captain named Matthew Webb covered himself in porpoise oil, strode into the frigid off Dover, England, and started swimming. He faced ice-cold temperatures, swift underwater currents and even the occasional stingray, but 22 hours later, Webb strode ashore in France as the first person to swim the English Channel. Upon his return (by boat), an ecstatic British public showered the 27-year-old with accolades, publicity and even his own brand of matches.

Webb, it turns out, was an early practitioner of what we now call open water swimming. Once the sole domain of daredevils, open water swimming's worldwide popularity has been in a recent upswing. Open water swimming is the first leg of any triathlon. In 2008, marathon swimming made its Olympic debut in Beijing. Even English Channel swims have surged in popularity. Ever since Webb's 1875 feat, the channel has been swum by everyone from a 15-year-old girl to a man without arms or legs. Open water swimming offers participants a huge range of scenic options. You can take to the Hudson River, swimming alongside the New York skyline. You can dive into pristine lakes in Western Canada. Or, at Kona, Hawaii, site of the Ironman World Championships, you can swim among brightly-coloured tropical fish and coral reefs. In South Africa, the Robben Island Freedom Swim is one of the toughest open water swimming event of its kind in the world due to the icy ocean (around 13°C), strong currents and various other conditions. The event also celebrates

South Africa’s Freedom Day and has put South Africa on the open water swimming map. Now, there’s a new South African open water option for those tough enough to take on the challenge. Last week, Mike Oberholzer, Josie de Charmoy and Andrew Stevens swam from Tinley Manor to Ballito to put the KZN North Coast on the open water swimming map and to peg a claim in the annals of the sport. It’s an extremely challenging 13km swim, marked by treacherous currents, strong surf, big sharks and jagged reefs and there were many in the community who thought that they were crazy to attempt it. But the guys had fantastic support in the ocean, from the air, and on the shore to cover any eventuality and, four and a half hours after entering the sea at Tinley Manor, they reached their destination on the beach at Salmon Bay, Ballito. There are easier ways to get to Ballito from Tinley Manor, but for those who hanker after the thrill and the challenge of wild open water swimming, this will be the route they attempt, pioneered by Mike, Josie and Andrew. They were the first, and will forever hold the distinction of having done what many considered impossible. Pics – Dolphin Coast Photography

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS 2017

HOMEGROWN

Mark Metior – M&M Designs

T

HE leading Pantone colour for the year is “Greenery “, however, Pink stood out as a strong contender at Maison de Object 2017 in Paris.

Complex colour, one might think, but as an interior designer, when one starts working with these and the other colours that form part of this palette, is easier to understand - Pinks and greens mixed with tones of blue and grey either independently or together. Brass still plays a major part in furniture design and detailing and further embraces these colours Soon one realises there is not much that doesn’t work with pink and green . The trend with wallpapers sees large botanical designs and textures featuring strongly by most of the leading brands. Don’t be afraid of accent walls in darker grey tones. Fabrics for 2017 are luxurious, and textured velvets certainly look exciting. Visit our retail store where we have embraced these trends with many decor accessories as well as scatter cushions from Victoria Verbaan and Evolution Products. www.mmdesign.co.za │ 031 539 1072

IDA DU PLOOY RETIREMENT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING Harcourts Dolphin Coast will celebrate its seventh year in business on the first of May this year. Ida du Plooy started with Harcourts Ballito in 2007 but left in 2010 to ‘go it alone’. She opened Harcourts Dolphin Coast in a temporary office in the servant’s room of her house while they renovated premises at 11 Jack Powell Road in Ballito. The renovations took three months and they moved in on the 3rd of June 2010. Since then the company has grown and expanded dramatically. Recently they won the title “Best of the Best” in the regional group for 2016 and they have consistently been in the top 20 agencies for Harcourts, nationally. Ida du Plooy is an inspiring entrepreneur who has contributed significally to the building of Brand Ballito. This is her story. What is your personal history and heritage? I was born and bred on the East Rand in Springs and I finished school at Hugenote Meisies Skool. I will not disclose the year - it was so long ago…. What did you do before Real Estate? My big ambition was to become an opera singer. Instead I became a music teacher, teaching piano, and I produced school concerts and revues and worked with choirs. I played organ in church and went to the symphony in Johannesburg’s City Hall, right through the troubled times before 1994. As the saying goes: Those who can do....those who can’t teach…I became a teacher! What brought you to the Dolphin Coast? My husband, Neels, retired (he,he,he ) and I stopped teaching. He is still working with me as the principal of Rentalsdotcom – our rental division. I always maintained that I would one day live in Ballito when my two boys had completed their studies. On the day my son graduated, the car was packed and we made the final trip from Pretoria to Ballito. We are still loving it!

What do you most enjoy about what you do? People. I am so blessed to be able to get to know and to meet interesting people. Recently I love assisting all the agents at Harcourts Dolphin Coast to succeed in their work and to stand out in what they do according to our Harcourts Value’s: People first, to be courageous, to always do the right thing and to have fun while they are working so hard. What are the challenges you face and how do you deal with them? In recent times the real estate industry has been the focus of some ugly politics and some agents got themselves in trouble over social media comments that they made. Another big concern our country’s downgrade to Junk Status and the threat of new and onerous property laws in the making. I believe our saving grace will be to follow the rules and abide by the law, to keep personal and nasty comments to yourself and to serve your Sellers and Buyers with the best advice and service you can. We are very fortunate to belong to an International company that has given us the very best in

technology, marketing but most importantly, a value system that complies with all human rights. What inspires you? My Faith. I believe we are all on earth for a reason. Tell us about your passion for music. Classical music is my absolute passion. I enjoy listening to music and attending concerts, opera and ballet. One of my great pleasures of living in Ballito, is to attend the regular music evenings of the Dolphin Coast Music society. What is your vision for the future of this region? The Dolphin Coast is the place to be! I believe that Ballito will expand but that it will always keep its charm of that little coastal town, especially in and around Compensation beach. Will you stay here or is there somewhere else that beckons? I hope that I will be able to be here till the day I die. However, my children in Gauteng may persuade us to move back to the ‘rat-race’. That would be just too terrible.....

Where Only the Best is Good Enough

T Lasersure our passion for beauty and aesthetic treatments is shared by the beauty therapists and doctors alike. The beauty, anti-aging, and aesthetic industry is rapidly growing and we pride ourselves, that we continuously stay abreast of this fascinating and fast developing industry. Whilst the beauty industry is flooded with products, Lasersure uses only the most trusted, best researched, FDA approved, medical standard products to obtain the ultimate results for each client. The same applies when offering laser treatments. Cheaper laser or IPL machines make for less effective and often more risky laser therapy. Lasersure’s laser machines are top of the range and can be fine-tuned to treat any skin type because of highly experienced therapist capable of utilising precise setting. Plastic surgery has declined by 38% in the UK as clients prefer to seek alternative aesthetic treatments which cannot permanently change one’s appearance and can even be reversed. Ideally the outcome of aesthetic treatments should leave the person with normal expression, a natural appearance and certainly not with “banana cheeks”, “duck lips” or a “Botoxed look” Trust in the injector’s ability, experience and integrity is mandatory, and our ultimate goal at Lasersure.

HarleyDavidson

Jaguar is restoring ten Series 1 models to their former glory - and selling them for £285,000 (R4 850 000) a piece...

Road King Classic The latest Road King Classic highlights the approach that has served Harley-Davidson so well in recent decades. It has a brand new engine and an updated chassis. Yet with its unchanged screen, running lights, copious chrome, white-wall tyres and saddle-bags, the Classic still looks as though it rolled off Harley’s production line in the Fifties. Its key upgrade is the MilwaukeeEight engine, the name combining Harley’s Wisconsin home town with the air-cooled, V-twin unit’s increased number of valves. Its full name of Milwaukee-Eight 107 refers to the increased capacity of 1,745cc, or 107 cubic inches. In other respects the Road King Classic experience has changed very little. You still sit bolt upright, looking over a near-vertical screen, gripping wide, pulled-back handlebars with boots on generous footboards. Thankfully, the new-found smoothness and sophistication hasn’t dulled the character that is at the heart of any Harley’s appeal. There’s still a distinct V-twin feel, and reduced mechanical noise has allowed a slightly sharper exhaust note while also complying with Euro 4 regulations.

19 April -02 May 2017

Like Harley’s other updated Touring models, the Classic also features new suspension from Japanese specialist Showa. This latest set-up works well. Ride quality is excellent, and the Classic has a distinctly more stable feel when cornering, especially on bumpy surfaces. Despite being long, and heavy at over 370kg, it steers easily and handles well enough to be fun on a twisty road, although like most big American V-twins it is limited by ground clearance. Braking, once a Harley weakness, is respectably powerful too. The Classic is also versatile, not least because its screen, which allowed a pleasantly turbulence-free ride, can quickly be unclipped to leave a naked cruiser for short trips. Alternatively, on longer rides the Harley has a realistic fuel range of 320 km or more; and its stepped dual-seat, although not very generous to a pillion, seems respectably comfortable. This thoughtfully updated Road King Classic is subtly quicker and more refined; a genuinely practical, capable modern motorbike. And best of all, to look at it you’d never have a clue.

enthusiasts’ eyes, the E-Type is the greatest car of all time. Given the classic Jaguar’s performance, racing pedigree and looks to-die-for, it’s hard to argue with them.

And now it’s making an official return via Jaguar’s Classic Works facility in the UK - It won’t come cheap, though. These Series 1 E-Type will set you back £285,000 (4 850 000) a piece - a far cry from the £2,250 the originals cost in the early sixties. The first of the ‘E-Type Reborn’ range made its debut at the Techno-Classica Essen show in Germany on April 5 and is one of just 10 cars that will initially be built. Such limit numbers is due to the fact each car is expertly sourced and comprehensively restored to a concours level by the Jaguar Classic crew - that means they’re all genuine original E-Types, rather than new versions built from scratch. All will be Series 1 examples built from 1961 to 1968, though with a choice of the 3.8-litre or 4.2-litre powertrains and body shapes, including coupe and convertible.

Take this Fixed Head Coupe show car with the bigger of the two motors. It was originally exported to California where it racked up around 78,000 miles before it was stored in the early Eighties. The body shell, engine and gearbox are completely original and have been rebuilt, while the ‘safety critical’ parts have been replaced with like-for-like fresh components made just as they would have been over half a century ago. For instance, the mechanics use the spot-welding technique as Jaguar technicians would have in the early sixties, giving the cars the ultimate level of authenticity. The total cost to restore this rusting E-Type to its former best using originally-manufactured parts is almost immeasurable, making Jaguar Classics' figure a little less difficult to swallow.difficult to swallow.

The smiles on the faces of our test drive participants was worth a million pictures,” says Janet Pillay, PR and Promotions Manager at Sibaya.
