aving organised several outdoor music events in the greater Ballito region over the past few years, I have come to realise that there is a better than average chance of rain falling when you really don’t want it to. Such was the case over the past weekend when Mango Groove came to Ballito to headline the first in a series of concerts under the auspices of the Marriott Ballito Beats programme.
The rain was so heavy and unrelenting that I was convinced that no one would venture out, despite the organisers having arranged to cover the venue at the last minute. I was wrong – over a thousand concert goers filled the giant tent in homage to one of South Africa’s best loved and longest running acts. Since their first iconic multi-platinum release in 1989, Mango Groove has gone on to become a household name in South Africa. In an illustrious career, spanning nearly 30 years, Mango Groove has sold over one million albums in South Africa alone, and in terms of airplay across all radio and TV stations, continues to be an act that truly reaches the hearts of all South Africans. Mango Groove has enjoyed over twelve number 1 hits, including such classics as Dance Some More, Moments Away, Another Country and Special Star, and many others. They have set new precedents for all South African artists, being the only South African group to sell out the Superbowl and the Standard Bank Arena 6 times each. This multi-platinum-selling band was the first to re-define live staging and production standards for domestic acts; the first to command a millionrand sponsorship deal, and were the first and only group to remain at the top of the South African National Sales Chart for over a year. Internationally, Mango Groove’s unique and magical blend of South African marabi, kwela and pop influences, together with the voice and

presence of Claire Johnston has captivated audiences around the world. Highlights of their career include the direct satellite link- up to the Freddie Mercury tribute in London (to an estimated audience of a billion people); their performance in front of 200 000 people at the Paris “SOS Racism” concert; and their performance at the renowned Montreux Jazz festival where the band received 3 encores. From London to Hong Kong to Toronto to Sydney, the band has played to sellout crowds... Mango Groove was featured in the ABC worldwide broadcast of Nelson Mandela’s release where their music was used as the main theme. A few years later they headlined at his inauguration. They have recently headlined Oppikoppi and Rocking The Daisies and Splashy Fen and continue to draw thousands of fans to shows around the country. Not even the most torrential deluge could deter fans who flocked to Ballito

Most notably Junk Status increases the cost of borrowing for our Government and the future impact on property values cannot be underestimated. The repo rate has remained stable at 7% since March 2016, but may well increase. Keeping a positive attitude, no matter what your circumstances, it is still worth your while buying property on the Dolphin Coast, the place we call HOME.
1. When Buying or Selling in times like
these, and if necessary consult with a Financial Advisor before making any rash decisions. 2. Do not get caught up in the hype and hearsay of negative news. Plan carefully with as many facts as possible and then stick to your plan over the coming months. 3. Turn the negative sentiment into a positive opportunity and be on the lookout for good property
investment opportunities. 4. Curb spending. This is not the time to over-capitalize on any property. 5. As Entrepreneurs you may like to consider buying that larger property from where you can run a small business. Saving on additional rental costs.

Freshlyground - Coming to Ballito
H
I Everyone! I hope that Mothers around the North Coast had an awesome weekend with their families. The specials that we spoke about on our show last Friday will have come in really handy I’m sure. It’s wonderful having such great sponsors for our Consumer Watch show!! Hirsch’s, Rest Assured and Cloud Nine and of course, Food Lovers Market. They all came up with some fantastic specials for the weekend to make your lives a lot easier when making shopping choices – and save on the family budget! Don’t forget to listen out for specials every Friday at 8.30 on 88.0FM from our great sponsors.
DON’T BE A VICTIM. It’s a given that we live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but if we want to live happily in South Africa, we have be aware of some of the “signs of the times” pitfalls, ID theft being one of them. People usually find that they have become a victim of identify crime when they are contacted by a credit provider or debt collector in connection with a debt that they know nothing about. On investigation, they find that someone else has been using their ID and personal documents to open accounts for loans etc. DON’T let this happen to you! Here’s how you can prevent ID theft: SHRED or burn all documents that have your personal information. Don’t bin them. Land fill tips have become havens for ID thieves. Make sure that your account passwords are strong and not easy to decipher. Never respond to emails or SMS’s that ask you to insert or update your personal or banking information by clicking on a website link provided in the content of the message. Only carry ID items like your passport or ID document when it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise lock them away. CAR JAMMING has become a common crime on the North Coast, and you need to be really very wary about leaving valuables in your car. To beat would-be car thieves at their own game, every driver needs to develop the habit of physically testing the door handle of their vehicle before walking away. You can no longer trust the flash of lights or sounds that indicate that your vehicle is secure. After jamming your remote, thieves gain access to your vehicle to steal laptops, backpacks, wallets, sunglasses and shopping and the keys to your house. From an insurance point of view, you could be in trouble if you have been jamb locked. Most All Risks Insurance only covers items stolen from a car if there are visible signs of forced entry. So don’t leave anything visible, and lock everything in the boot or the cubbyhole. A thief is less likely to bother about your car if there is nothing of value in sight. However, if your vehicle offers access to the boot from the inside and the thieves see you stash your laptop, handbag or briefcase in the boot, no amount of boot locking will help. Looking forward to our chat on Friday!! Don’t forget to listen out at 8.30 a.m. for some great specials from our sponsors – and advice that will keep you happy and safe!

ver the past seven years, and across three acclaimed albums, it's become increasingly hard to pinpoint just one reason why Freshlyground is so universally adored.
Everywhere they go, Freshlyground is a sensation. In South Africa, audiences of every race cram in to see them. Old people get up and dance. Hip black teenagers sing to their lyrics. White kids emulate their moves. The very presence of this band in South Africa is a promise of a harmonious future. Every radio station in the country is playing their music. Through it all, the guys have maintained their sense of individual identity. Through it all they’ve kept their focus and their desire to play what reflects their uniqueness, themselves. Freshlyground formed early 2002, and is made up of
J
seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive, but dynamic, Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) & Josh Hawks (bass) is complemented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist (& some time dancer!) Aron Turest-Swartz, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith. Although all hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band weave. Freshlyground is coming to Ballito on Sunday June 11th for the second in the Marriott Ballito Beats concert series. Don’t miss it – tickets are available now on www.webtickets.co.za
MEET JOANDI, QUEEN OF THE CURRO CASTLE
oandi Bester was born and bred raised in Klerksdorp where both her parents were teachers. After finishing school in Kempton Park, she completed her education with a degree at from the University of Pretoria in 1997.
Joandi then relocated to KwaZulu-Natal in 1999 where she taught at Mtubatuba and then later, moved to Ballito in 2006. ‘I read an article about Dr Chris van der Merwe (founder of Curro) and the amazing story of how he decided to start his own school. He was my inspiration and in 2008 I literally opened my garage door and started Jolly Tots with only four children.’ One year later she partnered with a friend and by then the school expanded. The need for a proper pre-primary school now became a reality. ‘Soon we got the opportunity to build our own preschool in Simbithi Eco Estate and opened Eco Kidz in 2010 with 139 children and 14 staff members.’ Curro approached Eco Kidz in 2016 and Joandi sold her shares to the same company that inspired her to open
Joandi Bester, her daughter, Kristi and son, Kian. her own school. ‘I started working at Curro in August 2016 where I had the amazing opportunity to help with the building of the Curro Castle. I knew I was going to become part of an educational establishment with strong core values and excellent education.’ ‘Curro gave me an opportunity that I could not resist. I am proud to be part of the Curro family.’ Joandi’s motto in life is: Never be afraid to work hard! Do what you love and learn from your mistakes.

MANGO GROOVE HEATS UP THE NEW BALLITO MUSIC SERIES
MARRIOTT BALLITO BEATS Sugar Rush Park, Ballito, 14th May 2017 This Mother’s Day, Sugar Rush Park in Ballito hosted the first of the Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series. While relentless rain threatened to dampen spirits, the sounds of Claire Johnston and her larger than life musical ensemble got the crowds warmed up with dancing, singing and their typically infectious stage performance. Testament to the power of Radio Life & Style 88.0 FM and the community-based lifestyle in Ballito, families big and small braved the cold to enjoy the show. Young children in gum boots, elderly folk with camping chairs and coffee and everyone inbetween kitted out for an afternoon of music, family and good times. It was a Mother’s Day treat with a difference. Opening act Mbijana Sibisi, a contestant of the Voice SA, season 1, warmed the stage from 2pm. A short break allowed patrons to prepare themselves for the next big act: Mango Groove, who took to the stage at 3pm and got everybody standing and grooving to their distinct and tuneful sound. Ballito Beats Series Director Stu Berry of Impi Concept Events is thankful to those who attended. “With a record rainfall of at least 172mm in

one day, the fact that people still turned up and had a blast, is testament to the family-centric attitudes of the people of Ballito. Adding to that, it was an honour and privilege to have Mango Groove, one of South Africa’s most iconic bands kick off the series. We still believe this kind of great quality, live entertainment will add to an already community-based lifestyle here in Ballito, bringing people together at the popular Sugar Rush Park venue, for the ultimate family entertainment. Come rain or shine! Today was proof of that.” All shows will take place on a Sunday afternoon, with gates opening at 1pm. Mango Groove kicked off the inaugural Marriott Ballito Beats on Mother’s Day, and locals can now look forward to the larger than life sounds of Freshly Ground on the 11th of June, the familiar favourites sung by The Parlotones on the 17th of September, and the unmistakable melodies as South African rock legends Arno Carstens and Ard Matthews when they pair up on the 29th of October. With a booming community of over 40 000 people, and growing, the Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series promises to deliver on its promise to all locals looking for family entertainment right in their very own back yard. CONTAINER PLANT SECRETS PAM JACOB - DRIEFONTEIN GARDEN CENTRE `The North wind doth blow dies on you, when in truth you are not and we shall have snow, what giving them their requirements. will the Robins do then, poor “How often should I water” is things’, was an expression that the song most sung and difficult to I often heard as a child from answer as conditions vary from home my English Grandpa and he would rub his hands to home and room to room, but I can together and declare himself `starved’, prompting a tell you that over watering has to be visitor to ask the family please to feed him. Well, the South wind is certainly blowing and it feels like it should snow and I am so starved that I have a number of jerseys on. And leggings. And scarves – hence the expression `starved’ meaning very, very cold. We are so badly in need of the rain that is falling. As our lives turn more to the warmth of indoor living, we need to take stock of what plants we have in our homes and their requirements. Are they looking their best? Are they root bound and in need of re-potting? Have they been cared for? Now I will let you into a little secret. All the indoor plants that you see in every Supermarket and Nursery that come from `plant factories’ in Gauteng e.g. Anthuriums; Orhids; Peace Lilies; African Violets; Begonias; Ficus and all the leafy plants available, are fed every time they are watered through fertigation systems i.e. irrigation to which fertilizer is added. You buy them for their beauty, put them in a pot, either over Zamiocalcus Zamifolia or under water them and never feed them; then say that such and such a plant is useless and just A2 Competition Standee R.pdf

the biggest killer of container plants with lack of nutrients following a close second. Most indoor plants will enjoy being stood in a bowl of water from time to time to which liquid or water soluble fertilizer has been added. Allow the plant to soak up its needs and then return the plant to its regular spot. If for some reason, you have a plant that is too huge to move and you don’t want water to go through and stain carpets or tiling, you will need to adjust the watering and feeding by giving small amounts more regularly so that the water does not seep through but is utilised by the roots. This applies to all container planting whether in the home or on patios.

STEPS TO FINDING THE PERFECT PAINT COLOUR FOR YOUR HOME.
ANNE ROSELT - COLOUR MANAGER FOR PLASCON
Taking the time to choose a colour scheme and colours that reflect your lifestyle will go a long way to creating a happy and healthy environment for years to come. 1. KEEP A RECORD OF INSPIRATION We are surrounded by inspiration every day. Keeping a record of images and colours that inspire will give you a clear picture of your taste and style preferences. Every few months when the time comes to clear out my magazine collection, I go through each of them, taking out the images that inspire me. I keep a file of the images by room and when I am ready to paint I always refer back to these. Pinterest and Instagram allow us to do this digitally and are also great sources of inspiration. A lot of work on what the latest paint colours are and how to use them can be found in the plascon Colour Forecast as ell as Spaces Magazine. 2. DECIDE ON THE MOOD OR ATMOSPHERE YOU WANT TO CREATE. Colour is the most important design element in creating the mood and atmosphere of a space. That is because colour has energy whether you like that colour or not. Generally when we walk into a red room we feel excited and our blood pressure rises, so reds, oranges and
yellows are recommended for areas where you want to create a friendly, sociable and energetic atmosphere. When we walk into a blue room we feel more calm and relaxed, these colours work well where you want to create a more peaceful and intuitive atmosphere. Decide how you want to feel when you and your family are in the room and let that point you in the direction of the colours to select. You can read more about the energy of different colours in the blog post on Colour Therapy. 3. CONSIDER THE SIZE AND TEMPERATURE OF THE SPACE. Cool colours like gentle blues and greens recede making a room appear larger than it is, warm colours with a red undertone advance and make a room appear smaller. Be aware that colours can affect the temperature of a space. If a room is hot, painting it red, yellow or orange will add to the heat in the room, rather select a cooler colour and vice versa. 4. CREATE A MOOD BOARD If you are unsure about what colour to choose, creating a mood board will help enormously. Think of it as the vision you have for your home. On the mood board, place your inspirational images, then be sure to add colour samples or actual samples of the items you cannot replace. For example - the colour of the flooring, samples of the fabrics in the room, if you have a piece of artwork and are inspired by that – take a photo of it and add it to the moodboard. Once you have this and have taken the other considerations into account you can start to add paint swatch samples and it will become clear which colour will work best with everything. 5. BALANCE YOUR SCHEME Balance cool colour schemes with some warm colours – for example; if a blue scheme is looking too cold and unwelcoming introduce some red, orange or yellow accents to balance and warm the scheme. Vice versa for a warm scheme. Some of the most popular colour scheming harmoies are: •A monochromatic harmony created using tints and shades of the same colour. (A tint is a colour with white added. A shade is a colour with black added.) Often use with neutral to create a serene but interesting look. •A complementary harmony is when colours opposite on the colour wheel are used to enhance and balance each other. Complementary Colours are: Blue and Orange Green and Red Purple and Yellow. If you find a scheme is not working, try adding some green plants and you will be amazed how they can assist in balancing a look. 6. CONSIDER THE LIGHTING I remember a while ago, I was asked to visit a home in Bryanston, the owner complained that the neutral paint she had bought had a green tinge on one wall.
When I went to the home I noticed that the wall was adjacent to a large window, the light coming in through the window was reflecting the green shrubbery outside the window onto the wall. Coloured carpets and curtains can have a similar effect if the light bounces off it. The colour will change during daylight and at night with your lights on. With incandescent lights being phased out due to their energy inefficiency, we have a choice between fluorescent and LED lighting. Both come in cool or warm light, so it is a personal choice as to what light you prefer. Warm light will enhance warm colours and dull cooler shades. Cool light will enhance cool shades and dull the warmer shades. Note: Fluorescent lights contains mercury so need to be disposed of responsibly. 7. CHOOSING YOUR PAINT Basically there are two types of paint for interiors. •Water-based or Acrylic paints these can be used on walls, ceilings and furniture. Matt paints will hide imperfections and are just as washable as their sheen counterparts.
I recommend Plascon Cashmere or Plascon Polvin for interiors which are excellent quality matt paints. Sheen Paints look luxurious and enhance deep colours, but make sure your walls are perfectly smooth. Plascon Double Velvet is a beautiful Don’t underestimate the quality paint , cheap paint does not have quality pigments or binders, these paints will look shoddy after a short while, which means you have to paint again sooner rather than later. •Enamel paints - For doors, skirting’s and window frames. These paints are now available in water-based options. The water-based enamels are not only better quality but much friendlier to the environment. When choosing n enamel for your trim always insist on the water-based option. I recommend Velvaglo Waterbased 8. TEST YOUR COLOUR With all these considerations taken
into account you can now get a sample of your paint colour. Be sure to check the colour on a paint swatch. I often find a colour looks more intense when painted on a wall than it does on the
much smaller swatch card. What I usually do is go for a slightly lighter and muted tint than the colour I am drawn to on the swatch card) I would recommend painting the colour on a 1metre by 1metre piece of card. This way you see how the colour looks on different walls during different times of the day, you can also look at it against the flooring, sofa and curtains. Taking the time to go through these steps is fun and you may uncover a creative side you never knew you had. www.anneroselt.com

very month Hirsch Branches around the country host a Woman in Business networking event and present an award to a deserving business woman in the area. Attending the Ilembe Chamber Gala Dinner that was held at the Fairmont Hotel recently, were many of the Finalists of the Ilembe Chamber, Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Award. Also attending was the KZN Regional winner of the Award for 2016, Vino Govender who said that her
business had never looked back since she won the award last year. She has gone on to win several more awards since. This is exactly the knock on effect that Margaret Hirsch, who started the competitions around the country in 2014, wanted to see. She has been thrilled to see the growth in the Women in Business sector in South Africa – acknowledging outstanding women in the workplace is one of many ways to help women grow in a male dominated society.

Step 2: Slice the garlic bulb in half and place in a large roasting tray. Pile the lamb shoulders, onion quarters, lemon juice, lemon zest, thyme and rosemary into the roasting tray and pour over all of the liquids (wine, worstereschire & stock). Cover with tin foil. Step 3: Roast for 8 hours. Step 4: While you wait, you can make the lemony Tahini drizzle. In a blender blitz tahini, yoghurt, lemon juice, olive oiled salt to taste.
Tahini Drizzle Zest & Juice of 2 medium sized lemons 2 x garlic cloves 3 TBS Tahini 1 Cup Olive Oil Salt & Pepper
Step 5: Remove the lamb from the oven and ladle some of the pan juices into a saucepan. Bring your pan juices to a boil, and simmer until it thickens. Taste it for seasoning, you may need to add more salt here, but that’s all dependant on personal taste. Step 6: Plate your tender roast lamb shoulder (we like to do so on a bed of herb Quinoa or creamy polenta) and pour your red wine reduction over liberally. Top with a good sprinkle of fresh pomegranate rubies and your tahini drizzle.

THE NEW GOLF V11.5 - NOW AT BALLITO VW
T
he updated Volkswagen Golf has arrived at Ballito VW with a revised engine line up, more technology, new infotainment, improved connectivity and revised styling with the retail price starting at R289 900. The new Golf now offers even more value, style and desirability into what is aptly referred to by many as the ‘Golf class’, building on the appeal of the Golf Mk VII. The latest updated Golf continues to offer customers a car that sets benchmarks in comfort, practicality, safety and efficiency.
Indeed, the new Golf creates a new benchmark for assistance systems in the compact class, employing technologies that will significantly improve safety. These include the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking System. Optionally available across the range, and ordered in conjunction with
The new Golf sparkles with technical innovations. For the first time in the compact class the new Discover Pro radio-navigation system can be operated via gesture control. Sporting a 9.2-inch touch screen, the optional system complements the Active Info Display. As before, the new car sits on the now familiar
MQB platform, which means it benefits from the latest available technology and shares elements of its underpinnings with other successful new models such as the award winning Passat and latest Tiguan.
the swivelling towbar, Trailer Assist including Park Assist neatly demonstrates the new Golf’s practical yet technically advanced nature. The system helps reverse a trailer or caravan with a weight of up to 1,800 kg into a parking bay or entrance from the street. To operate, the Golf driver simply engages reverse gear and activates the system via a push button. The driving angle and subsequent possible driving angles are displayed on the instrument cluster. All the driver then has to do is operate the accelerator pedal and brake, while the system automatically controls the direction of the car, using Park Assist to move the trailer backwards into the required position.
The progressive digitisation of Golf is supported by the debut of the highly efficient 1.0 TSI engine with 81kW power output. The 999cc engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and has claimed combined fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has strengthened the appeal of the iconic Golf GTI; it now develops 169kW an increase of 7kW from its predecessor as was found in the GTI Performance All Golfs at launch also feature BlueMotion Technologies such as a stop-start system and a mode for storing braking energy (regenerative braking). Design modifications include new bumpers front and rear, new halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights or full LED headlights – standard on GTI and optional in other derivatves – instead of xenon headlights; new front wings; and, as mentioned, new full LED rear lights as standard for all Golf versions. New wheel designs and body colours complete the exterior update, while fresh trim panels and materials also upgrade the interior of the Golf. Standard Porsche 4x4 Breaks World Record AFTER TOWING 285-TON AIRBUS A380 OUT OF ITS HANGAR
A
s world record attempts go it may strike many as plane bonkers.
But a British driver has accelerated into the Guinness Book of Records by successfully towing a 285-tonne Airbus A380 superjumbo - the biggest passenger aeroplane on the planet – using a standard Porsche Cayenne sports utility vehicle (SUV). And that was after the UK Porsche team behind the record-breaking attempt drove the car – more usually seen on school runs - from London to Paris to carry out the feat. The German 4X4, driven by Porsche GB technician Richard Payne, towed the giant Air France double-decker aircraft over a distance of 42-metres at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, to set a new Guinness World Records title for ‘Heaviest aircraft pull by a production car’. It beat the previous record by a margin of 115-tonnes. A far cry from towing the standard caravan, trailer or horse-box, the Porsche Cayenne was connected to the
Airbus A380 via a special attachment that sat on the vehicle’s standard tow bar. Slowly but surely as Porsche’s Mr Payne pressed down on the accelerator, the Cayenne carefully pulled away with the giant passenger plane edging forward inch by inch behind it and then gradually picking up the pace as both car and aircraft gained in momentum. Mr Payne, a technician at Porsche GB, who drove the record breaking car said: ‘It did it – I’m so relieved! We don’t usually go this far to test the limits of our cars but I think today we got pretty close. I could tell that it was working hard but the Cayenne didn’t complain and just got on with it. My mirrors were quite full of Airbus, which was interesting. Our cars can go a bit beyond what our customers might expect – they’re designed to be tough. But even so, what the Cayenne did today was remarkable. Pravin Patel, adjudicator, Guinness World Records said: ‘I’ve verified some amazing record attempts during my
time as a Guinness World Records adjudicator – watching a Porsche Cayenne tow one of the largest aircraft in the world definitely ranks as among the most spectacular. My congratulations go out to all those involved in achieving this remarkable feat.’ The previous world record, broken
by the Porsche Cayenne, was set in August 2013 when an unmodified Nissan Patrol pulled an Russian Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane weighing 170.9 tonnes inclusive of fuel, at Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.

HI-TECH CARS RISK BEING HACKED AND TURNED INTO
M
ONLINE
17 - 30 May 2017
THE SUZUKI BALENO GLX ROWAN WAGNER
‘BOMBS ON WHEELS’
odern hi-tech cars risk being hacked and turned into remotely controlled ‘bombs on wheels’ unless more is done to vet garage mechanics who service them, motor industry chiefs warned.
Failure to have properly qualified and regulated technicians creates security flaws that leave connected vehicles vulnerable to cyber-terrorists and criminals with evil intent, according to the respected Institute of the Motor Industry. The warning echoes scenes in the latest blockbuster Fast and the Furious film and the risk will intensify with the move towards greater self-driving autonomous technology in vehicles, said the professional body. Modern cars already feature self-braking, self-parking and self-steering lane-control functions and technology is moving rapidly towards more features. The weakest link compromising in-car security is un-vetted garage staff with access to a car’s on-board computer system, the industry’s professional body concluded. The scenario has chilling echoes of the new The Fate of the Furious movie (the eighth in the Fast and the Furious franchise) starring Charlize Theron as cyber-terrorist Cipher who hacks dozens of self-driving cars to crash them in scenes of havoc in New York.
A spokesman for the IMI said: ‘It’s a serious situation. Cars could be turned into bombs on wheels that are remotely controlled by terrorists. You don’t have to have a terrorist on board. It’s risk free to them. This our main concern.’ In 2015 a pair of cyber-security experts remotely hacked into a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Infiltrating the car via the entertainment system, they were able to disable some of the 4X4’s engine functions and interior controls such as air conditioning, locks and radio. It led parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to recall 1.4million vehicles. IMI chief executive Steve Nash said: ‘Computer diagnostics are becoming commonplace in the motor industry today but the bulk of the work in servicing is still of a mechanical nature. ‘The technological revolution in the automotive sector is shifting and broadening the skills needed by a maintenance technician to that of a systems analyst.’ He warned: ‘Car technology will continue to develop which means it’s more important than ever that vehicle technicians have not only the mechanical skills but the ICT skills to be able to service and maintain these vehicles in the safest possible way with an acute awareness of their legal and ethical responsibilities when accessing vehicle data.’
A
surprising hatchback that is stylish and spacious with a comfortable drive.
Being a first-time Suzuki driver I stepped into the unknown expecting just a standard hatchback with an okay drive and adequate space.
But I must tell you I was blown away by what Suzuki has produced with the Baleno. Firstly, I’m a big guy and space is always a factor for me whether sitting in the driver’s seat or taxing it as a passenger in the back my knees lose a few centimetres in most standard hatchbacks but the Baleno spoils drivers and passengers with a wealth of space, including a large 355-litre boot capacity. The Baleno is powered by a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated engine. The engine is the same as the engine that powers the Swift, Ertiga and Ciaz models and provides sufficient power while keeping fuel economy a main priority to users. Suzuki claim in tests they got 5.1l/100km which is not bad
at all and keeps the pocket fuller for longer. Suzuki has designed a car that is not only stylish on the outside but is very appealing on the inside with a blue and white light up display and a Pioneer entertainment system including Bluetooth and Aux
capabilities highlighting a trendy interior. The GLX model is also wellequipped with standard features like cruise control, automatic airconditioning and rear park distance control. Suzuki’s National Marketing and Product Planning Manager Charl Grobler said during a recent interview on Radio Life & Style that the Baleno targets a wide market from young businessman starting out in the working world to families looking for a spacious car with great fuel economy. In conclusion if you are looking for a car that is real value for money with a touch of style then the Baleno is a vehicle you should consider parking in your garage.
